Latest / Sea Hawkers Podcast: for Seattle Seahawks fans / Seahawks Roster Down to 53: Who Made the Cut?
Transcript
- 0:09Brandan: Hello, and welcome to the Sea Hawkers Podcast.
- 0:13I'm your host, Brandan Schulze, and I am joined by my good buddy Adam
- 0:17Emmert as we have some news today with the Seahawks roster being finalized
- 0:22kind of, but maybe not really, Adam.
- 0:25Adam: Yeah, it always changes a little bit, but, you know
- 0:28we're at the 70 now, as John likes to talk about it and the whole-
- 0:32Brandan: 53.
- 0:33Adam: No, no.
- 0:34He, he talks about it, he even said it in his press conference- Oh, the
- 0:36Brandan: s- okay 'cause the ready squad.
- 0:38Okay
- 0:38… Adam: that's right.
- 0:39He's like, "We don't like talking about our 53.
- 0:41It's our 70."
- 0:42And, we have an idea of where practice squad things might
- 0:46go here in the next day or so.
- 0:47They can't really get into that till tomorrow.
- 0:49But, you know, some interesting decisions made here when there
- 0:53was a good number of guys that you might look at and say on the bubble.
- 0:57And it's gonna be interesting to see if this is, you know, more or less what
- 1:02sticks for the remainder of the season or if it changes a little bit more from here.
- 1:07Brandan: You guys, Dad Golf in chat saying, "Ready squad assemble."
- 1:11I think that's gonna be the main thing over the next couple days of
- 1:14of what happens with the-… quote unquote ready squad, practice squad.
- 1:20Mo Barclay say on the ready or not squad.
- 1:22Like
- 1:22Adam: that, yeah.
- 1:23Brandan: a lot of folks…
- 1:24I, I think there is some areas where there might be some shock, and I think
- 1:28that one of the things that I think we can do is dispel some of the reasons
- 1:33why you should or should be not, shocked by, some of the moves
- 1:38that they decided to go with today.
- 1:40Because, you know, I, I think where most of the shock comes for folks is some
- 1:47of the, the more seasoned veterans that didn't make that initial 53-man roster.
- 1:54And I- we kind of hinted at it a little bit leading up to this 53 roster cut
- 2:01day of, you know, pointing out, okay, these are guys who are vested veterans.
- 2:05They could stick around.
- 2:07And, and I feel like a lot of those guys that ended up being on that cut list
- 2:13are guys who are also vested veterans, which means they can stick around.
- 2:17And then let…
- 2:17The, the risk of cutting a veteran player like, Trevon Diggs- Would be that
- 2:24another team could come along and say, "We're gonna guarantee your contract for
- 2:28the full season," and that might be, you know, for a, for a veteran player that
- 2:33might, be a better deal than, you know, being added to a practice squad and
- 2:38sticking around and, 'cause you're going to make less guaranteed money that way.
- 2:43Adam: Sure.
- 2:44And money's a giant motivator for a lot of dudes, no doubt about it.
- 2:47Look, Trevon Diggs has made some money in his career.
- 2:50Like, he got paid with the Cowboys, no doubt about it.
- 2:54And at this point in your career, maybe it makes more sense to you as
- 2:58a veteran player who's trying to get your career back on track to be like
- 3:02"Yeah, somebody could guarantee me the whole year, but I know my play's gonna
- 3:06get me on the 53 here at some point."
- 3:08And it's basically what John said in his presser here just
- 3:11in the last hour or so.
- 3:13And, just being in a good system with a good coach to put some good
- 3:19film out there, that's a great way to kinda resurrect your career and
- 3:22make even more money than maybe that guaranteed vet minimum for a year.
- 3:27Brandan: We've got Ryan911 in the chat joining us with a 999 super chat
- 3:32live executive producer saying, "The OGs, excited about the initial 53.
- 3:37Real football is just days away.
- 3:40Go Hawks."
- 3:41That's, that's the most exciting part about this, is this, this now feels
- 3:44like that point to where you go, "Okay, pre-season is now behind us.
- 3:49Now it's the regular season.
- 3:50We have the guys that we're gonna roll with," and yeah, it, it's gonna
- 3:53shift and change a little bit, but, really the, not a lot of guys…
- 3:59W- when I look at this list, I think the biggest news for me is there's, like, one
- 4:04guy who is on injured reserve, and it's a guy who was injured even before pre-season
- 4:10was started, and that's Zach Charbonnet.
- 4:12So the fact that we made it through with a lot of the guys that we were
- 4:16planning to have here, not a lot of guys lost in the pre-season.
- 4:21Big part of that is that Mike Macdonald didn't play anybody, that
- 4:25would, would've been the starting 22 pretty much during the pre-season.
- 4:29Adam: No, he definitely didn't, and they put Zach on the, the PUP list
- 4:32the physically una- unable to perform list, and makes sense, I mean, coming
- 4:36back from the ACL, so we won't see him till at least, what is that, week four?
- 4:40Is that-
- 4:40Brandan: they're out, yeah, for at least the first four weeks.
- 4:43Adam: Right.
- 4:44And then on injured re- reserve they did have Irv Charles, the special teamer.
- 4:49And- Right… that's somebody that, again, John spoke about in his
- 4:53presser in just how big of a deal he thinks it is to have, somebody
- 4:57like Irv Charles who can come back.
- 4:59And the way that John described him is, like, elite monster
- 5:03on special teams as a gunner
- 5:06Brandan: Well, you know, you need those gunners.
- 5:08Rick Darcy in chat, "To John Schneider can do anything he wants."
- 5:11You're more like that.
- 5:12I had to laugh that we drafted cornerback Andre Fuller from Toledo, who he
- 5:17cut, but we sent a six rounder to the Chargers for his Toledo cornerback
- 5:22partner, Avery Smith, who went undrafted.
- 5:25Adam: Right.
- 5:26Hey, look, you, especially these guys at the end of the draft
- 5:29undrafted guys, you know, a lot of them are lotto tickets, right?
- 5:33And so if you liked some of the things about Fuller, let's say if you're John
- 5:37Schneider, just with maybe some measurables or maybe an interview or
- 5:41whatever it was, and maybe the play on the field didn't quite pop as much
- 5:45as you thought, and then you hear John talk about what, Avery was able to
- 5:50do in San Die- San Diego, Los Angeles.
- 5:54and just what a great pre-season he had and the fact that that gave
- 5:58him a little bit of experience in the scheme, made it so that they felt
- 6:02like that that was gonna be a better move for them, at least initially.
- 6:05And honestly, with the track record of, you know, first Pete and John, and now
- 6:11John and, and Mike, like, I feel like we're gonna be talking about, you know
- 6:16second contract Avery Smith in about three years, as a, you know, top 15 quarter
- 6:23in the league or something like that.
- 6:25Or at least a solid starter and…
- 6:28'Cause these are the guys they find.
- 6:29These are the guys.
- 6:29Brandan: They always seem to.
- 6:30And Marlon in chat saying, "Oots, Richmond, Clark," those, those
- 6:34are the three big injuries, right, to, to come from this pre-season.
- 6:39And, and that's why I ma- tried to made the, make the clarification of
- 6:42the, the starting 22, which maybe you could make the argument for Oots
- 6:47being the, the lead fullback.
- 6:49But, if you were the Chargers and John Schneider calls you about a cornerback
- 6:56don't you, don't you pick up the phone and then reconsider that, oh, maybe…
- 7:00'Cause it's not like the Chargers are, like, this great, depth team.
- 7:03Oh, yeah, Bobo.
- 7:04also outside the starting 22.
- 7:07But, yes, w- I, while we're announcing all of the people who got
- 7:11injured, we can't leave out Bobo.
- 7:13it's not like the Chargers have this wealth of depth at corner.
- 7:17And so if John Schneider makes that call, Adam, aren't you like, "Well
- 7:20may- maybe we should keep this dude"?
- 7:23Adam: You never know.
- 7:24You never know.
- 7:25so kinda going through this, what, what was the biggest
- 7:29surprise for you, either on dudes who made it or guys that did-
- 7:35Brandan: The biggest sur- probably that we kept 10 offensive linemen.
- 7:41I thought that because they ended up keeping more on offense than on defense.
- 7:47They kept 26 on offense, and so as some of the names of people who were being kept
- 7:52started to roll in, like they're keeping Sauer, they're keeping Kallerup
- 7:57they're, they're keeping Bryce Cabeldue, you know, a lot of these guys kind of on
- 8:01the tight end and offensive line bubbles.
- 8:04I'm thinking well, w- I, I was starting to worry that there
- 8:08was something coming that, would be unexpected on offense.
- 8:13But it, it turned out that it just was that they kept 26 on offense
- 8:18and then only 24 on defense.
- 8:20So I, I guess the biggest thing for me was so many linemen
- 8:25Adam: Interesting.
- 8:25It's fu- my biggest surprise goes to offensive line too, because I think if you
- 8:31asked any 12 going into the training camp and preseason what the odds were that
- 8:39Christian Haynes would be able to play himself into sticking onto this roster
- 8:45this year, I bet you everybody would say, like, a 10% chance or less, right?
- 8:49Right.
- 8:49And I would've absolutely been in that camp.
- 8:52So for Christian Haynes to come out and perform as he did throughout
- 8:55the preseason with some really nice reps, throughout the preseason
- 8:59that was, that was a shock to me.
- 9:01That, it, it's literally a shock to me that he's on the
- 9:04roster now because of that.
- 9:07Brandan: Well, he showed his versatility throughout the preseason.
- 9:09They had him at right guard.
- 9:10They had him at left guard.
- 9:11He, he played full games where he was pulling double duty, and, and, and
- 9:16he had some good plays in there too.
- 9:18And then when Bo Stevens, when you got to see some of, his reps
- 9:22highlighted against Chris Jones in the final preseason game, I, I know we
- 9:26the breakdown was going around of, of some of his pancake he tried
- 9:33to take Chris Jones to the ground, in that game against the Chiefs.
- 9:37those are, those are pretty fun, reps by him.
- 9:40And yeah, when you…
- 9:42So Haynes, I guess the fact that Cabeldue ended up making it there
- 9:48shows that they, they wanna make sure that they have plenty of depth
- 9:54on that offensive line, and I, now I feel like we're super deep at guard.
- 9:59Adam: Yeah, it does help to have that extra depth there, and I think one
- 10:02of the things that it points to is just the way that the league is evolving in
- 10:08keeping four tight ends and only five receivers and then 10 offensive linemen.
- 10:12Like, all of that speaks to a certain style of football, of big
- 10:17physical, jelly it right down your throat, and I'm here for it, man.
- 10:20I, I love it.
- 10:22And it, I think that's a, an interesting development in the way that
- 10:26rosters are being managed these days because, you know, just even, what?
- 10:30Eight, 10 years ago, most teams were keeping six wide receivers all the
- 10:34time because you're in four wides all the time and spreading them out and
- 10:38doing the college rinky-dink stuff.
- 10:40Brandan: Yeah.
- 10:41KNTSTP saying, "Imagine having this convo about the O-line three years ago."
- 10:46Yeah
- 10:46Adam: right.
- 10:48Brandan: it, it is, it is a little bit surprising.
- 10:52on the running back side, so Jadarian Price, Brady Russell, George Holani
- 10:57Emmanuel Wilson, the four running backs.
- 11:00I think some people may have been surprised at, Jac- Jacardia Wright
- 11:05being cut considering how much play, but I, I think they were just trying
- 11:09to showcase him as much as possible.
- 11:12Velus Jones Jr.'s one of those vested veteran guys that I think they would
- 11:16try to keep around, and so j- having Jacardia out there as much as they did
- 11:20against the Chiefs was kind of a way f- to showcase him to, around the league
- 11:24and give him opportunity just to say, you know, for other teams to go, "Eh, maybe
- 11:28we need a running back," and, and he could be a guy based on his performance.
- 11:32But he, while we, we got to see the one touchdown from him the week before
- 11:36there, there weren't any real breakout plays from him against the Chiefs.
- 11:40Adam: Not a lot of breakout holes to run through either-
- 11:42No… to be fair to Jacardia.
- 11:44But yeah, maybe a surprise that you don't keep another back there
- 11:47especially if you're gonna be playing pound the rock type football.
- 11:51And with the amount of attrition that happens, in the running back room.
- 11:56But again, you're kinda looking at the four backs there, and
- 11:59it's, it's kind of five, right?
- 12:01Because at the end of the day, or the three running backs there
- 12:05it's kind of four because, you know, that Charbonnet is coming back.
- 12:09Brandan: Yeah, exactly.
- 12:11Marlon85 in chat saying, "Clinton must be happy about Foster."
- 12:15I think we should all be happy about Foster.
- 12:17I mean, he was kind of the, the story through hard knocks and, y- with…
- 12:22It's kind of a bummer because I think Bobo getting injured was his
- 12:27avenue to then making this team.
- 12:30But, a- and the other part of that too, which was, with Cody White
- 12:36that was another part that surprised me a little bit because I felt like in
- 12:40the week leading up to it, Cody White wasn't on the vested veteran list.
- 12:44But then when they announced the cuts, Cody White was on the list
- 12:48of the guys who were the vested veterans, so that's why it made sense
- 12:52to where, he's not gonna get…
- 12:55I, I think if White were subject to waiver claims, you, you probably would've
- 13:00seen White make the roster inste- over Foster, but because he is a veteran
- 13:05they can add him, you know, they can say, "Hey, you're not necessarily
- 13:08going anywhere," unless somebody gives him a guaranteed deal, right?
- 13:12But, yeah.
- 13:14Right Keeping Foster and then hopefully White then able to
- 13:17be part of that ready squad.
- 13:19Adam: Yeah, it feels like Cody White would be one of the people
- 13:22to go to the ready squad here.
- 13:23And then of some of the veterans, obviously they talk about Diggs going
- 13:26to the ready squad, so we know that.
- 13:28Brandan: The Anthony Bell, the other one, was w- another one of those vet- vested
- 13:31veteran guys that probably sticks around.
- 13:34Adam: Yep, that
- 13:34Brandan: feels right.
- 13:34But not on the, on, not on the 53.
- 13:37Adam: Right.
- 13:37It, that feels correct to me.
- 13:39you know, Mr.
- 13:40Iggy, he's gonna be, a guy that I would think they could sneak into
- 13:44that, ready squad position there.
- 13:47Velus Jones Jr., I mean, whatever.
- 13:49I, I couldn't care less.
- 13:51It, it'll be interesting- He
- 13:53Brandan: he- He's a depth piece on special teams that you, you may
- 13:55wanna keep around for his, Sure.
- 13:57Yeah.
- 13:58Darcy in chat saying, "What about the safeties?"
- 14:02It, was it surprising at all to you?
- 14:04Because the, the fact that they did only go with 23 or 24 on defense
- 14:09they ended up, I think, being a little light at the safety spot, 'cause you
- 14:13have Julian Love, you have Ty Okada, and then you have Nick Emmanwori.
- 14:16While Emmanwori has suited up to practice now, do you look at that as them
- 14:22being hopeful that Emmanwori is then going to be ready to go week one?
- 14:27or, against the Patriots?
- 14:30Or are you feeling like they're, they're gonna have to make some
- 14:33switch there to have some safety depth going into week one?
- 14:37Adam: Yeah, I think, you know, with Bell, with my prediction of
- 14:40being part of the 70 and on the ready squad, I think that that gives
- 14:44you, obviously, then your fourth.
- 14:46And then I'd be almost surprised too if Rodney Thomas doesn't
- 14:49end up there depending on what they've seen out of him throughout
- 14:52practice and that sort of thing.
- 14:53And then that would give you the flexibility if, you know, injuries
- 14:56do kind of come around, or you feel like you need to elevate a guy for
- 14:59a particular week and you're feeling thin at safety, then you could do that.
- 15:02So that, that'd be my guess as to how they're gonna manage it.
- 15:05But I mean- It's Josh Snyder.
- 15:09Like, good luck.
- 15:11Brandan: Looking at the depth on defense.
- 15:13So we, I, I mentioned the three safeties that we kept.
- 15:15let- let's go kind of the back of the defense to the front.
- 15:18corners, they kept five.
- 15:20Devon Witherspoon, Josh Jobe, Julian Neal, Nehemiah Pritchett, and then the
- 15:26the corner that they traded for from Toledo that rounds out the five at corner.
- 15:31Adam: Yep, and I mean, that seems like it could be a decent
- 15:35room when it's all said and done.
- 15:37I mean, obviously it's top-heavy at this point.
- 15:39But I liked what we saw out of Pritchett, especially in preseason Game 3.
- 15:44you know, John talking about Julian Neal and that, being like, "Hey, you know
- 15:49we didn't really see much out of him," and he's like, "Dude, he's like 6'2" and fast
- 15:54and has ball skills," and that's cool.
- 15:57So I, I'm not surprised that they ended up keeping him, and there
- 16:00there's still a path to, for him to see more playing time this year.
- 16:03And again, I, I'm now squarely in the Avery Smith is probably gonna be like
- 16:09a s- solid starting level quarter for this team-… for like two
- 16:13three years because John, you know?
- 16:15Brandan: Well, they also, I don't know if they necessarily need him to, to
- 16:21be a guy that goes out there right away and, and contributes either.
- 16:24So, I, I think they have, they, they have some time with him
- 16:28too, but, they do feel like based on the trade, based on Diggs staying
- 16:34around, possibly Igbinoghene, it, it seems like there is a lot of depth
- 16:39there, and they're just gonna kind of wait to see who steps r- up from there.
- 16:43Plus
- 16:43Adam: Terrion Arnold might be back at some point this season as well.
- 16:47Brandan: Yeah, who knows, right?
- 16:48Because-
- 16:48Adam: That's a lot of hard telling not knowing, for sure.
- 16:51Brandan: I mean, he has to avoid jail first, so there's-
- 16:54Adam: That would be, that'd be sweet, unless I guess he really deserves
- 16:58to go to jail, which I don't know.
- 16:59Like, it, it's all allegations at this
- 17:01Brandan: point.
- 17:01Right.
- 17:02linebackers, you got Ernest Jones, Drake Thomas, Tyrese Knight, who felt
- 17:07like the three locks based on the preseason, and then, Chazz Surratt.
- 17:11Patrick O'Connell, our, our Kalispell kid made it through, Adam, who generally
- 17:16we don't see make it, to the 53.
- 17:18Usually, the, he's a guy that they have to s- let slip to the practice squad, but
- 17:22they, they, he was not one they were taking a chance on this year, apparently.
- 17:26Adam: Yeah, I mean, definitely with, you know, former Flathead
- 17:30Brave, not Glacier Wolfpack-… Patrick O'Connell, it is pretty
- 17:35cool to see him on there since he's from our hometown, and he has really kind of
- 17:40improved his play each and every year, and I think he's become a, a consistent
- 17:43performer, a guy that you can look at and say, "I feel pretty confident
- 17:47with him as a, solid backer."
- 17:50Brandan: We've got Leonard Williams, Jarran Reed, Byron Murphy, Riley Mills
- 17:55and then Brandon Peely and Mike Morris, who, guys who I kind of thought were
- 17:59near the bubble, both made it, made it.
- 18:01Devin Eastern, though, was cut.
- 18:04Adam: Yeah.
- 18:04somebody that got touted a lot with the preseason hype and that sort of thing
- 18:09when he came in and didn't really flash.
- 18:12Mike Morris is somebody who has just kind of stuck around and, and is making a
- 18:17career for himself, and that was kind of cool to see, 'cause I like the dude.
- 18:22But, you know, big-bodied guy.
- 18:23It…
- 18:24You look down that, you know, defensive line group there, and
- 18:28there's not a lot of, like, the super twitchy, just get off the ball guys.
- 18:32I mean, these are mauling dudes who get in your face and are good against the run.
- 18:37So, that's something I like to see.
- 18:40Brandan: Michael Knight coming in with a $10 super chat.
- 18:43Jason Turner saying, "What do you think about cornerback A.J.
- 18:47Smith?"
- 18:47We did talk a little bit about A.J.
- 18:48Smith- Mm-hmm… off the top, so, but as far as what I've seen
- 18:52for, I, I haven't watched any A.J.
- 18:54Smith with the Chargers, but, Yeah, not one snap… I, I know
- 18:56some people in chat, there were some Chargers fans who were surprised
- 19:01that he was dealt because they, they thought he was gonna make their 53.
- 19:06Adam: That's interesting.
- 19:07And again, just trusting in John on this sort of thing.
- 19:11Brandan: He, he has a good track record of, of finding corners.
- 19:15I mean, that's how Josh Jobe ended up here, is that he was- Oh
- 19:19Adam: yeah
- 19:19… Brandan: he was an undrafted guy.
- 19:21The Eagles had him.
- 19:22They traded a pick, and now they've, you know, given him a contract, so.
- 19:27Adam: Yeah.
- 19:27Brandan: rounding out the defense, though, DeMarcus
- 19:29Lawrence, Dante Fowler Jr.
- 19:31Uchenna Nwosu, Derick Hall, Connor O'Toole making the list ahead of both Jared
- 19:37Ivey and Jamie Sheriff, who were cut.
- 19:39Adam: Yeah.
- 19:40Jamie Sheriff, one of those guys that just kind of bounces on
- 19:44and off this roster 1,000 times.
- 19:45I'm sure when he got the, the long three-minute walk, as John
- 19:49put it in his presser, he's like, he probably chatted it up.
- 19:52It probably wasn't that quiet 'cause he's like, "Yeah, I do this all the time,"
- 19:55like, "They'll bring me back again."
- 19:56and maybe they do, at some point.
- 19:59But edge rusher, you know, basically the same group that
- 20:03you had last year as a whole.
- 20:04And honestly, I, I feel like Fowler's a bit of an upgrade
- 20:08over, you know, current Boye Mafe.
- 20:11Could Boye Mafe be, like, super awesome in three years?
- 20:13Maybe.
- 20:14Hard telling, but I doubt it.
- 20:17I like this group, and I think they're as deep as they need to be, and
- 20:22they're gonna be another force this year
- 20:26Brandan: Rick Darcy.
- 20:26Not, it sounds like not a big fan of the Kallerup, decision to keep him
- 20:31around, which I think that because we see so little of him in the passing
- 20:36game, but they, they seem to, they seem to like him, 'cause he stuck
- 20:40around all last year, and so I wasn't shocked when I saw Kallerup on the list
- 20:45of, of keeping four tight ends and, along with Albert, Arroyo, and Barner.
- 20:50yeah, not, not a lot…
- 20:54I'm not shocked myself, but, they, they have plans for Nick Kallerup, Adam.
- 21:01Adam: Yeah, they have plans for him to be just a solid dude
- 21:04that you can insert in there if, you need to because of injury.
- 21:08And yeah, I mean, I- I'm not exactly like over the moon that Kallerup
- 21:15is on the roster by any means.
- 21:17Not pissed off about it neither.
- 21:19that's kind of one of those roster moves that I look at and I
- 21:22go, "Yeah, that's what we're doing?
- 21:23Okay, fine."
- 21:26Brandan: And let's see, we touched on the wide receivers
- 21:28running backs, and quarterbacks.
- 21:30Milroe made the, we're, we're rolling with three quarterbacks again
- 21:34and I, I don't think we should be necessarily shocked by that based on- No
- 21:39what we saw from Milroe.
- 21:41Adam: No.
- 21:41And not only that, but, like, if you're gonna make the investment in
- 21:45Milroe as you did just in the draft, and then now two off-seasons worth
- 21:50of work, and you see progression in that work, like, you don't give up
- 21:55on a developmental QB at this point.
- 21:59The- there's no real reason to do that, in my opinion
- 22:04Brandan: We got Paul's Epic Adventure reminding us that, Aaron Donald is
- 22:09on the Rams this year, Adam, and, asking if the Rams are over the cap space.
- 22:14Yeah.
- 22:14I, I mean, I guess not because they have to, they have to be under.
- 22:20They, they're
- 22:20Adam: probably not because of the stupid Browns and the way they
- 22:23did the Miles Garrett deal there.
- 22:24It
- 22:24Brandan: was the Miles Garrett deal that, that really, yeah
- 22:28made that possible for them and-
- 22:30Adam: Helped them out…
- 22:31Brandan: it is surprising though, when I…
- 22:35I'm surprised they gave him 20 million guaranteed for…
- 22:39And I'm not surprised that that's what Aaron Donald
- 22:41wanted to be able to come back.
- 22:42Adam: Sure.
- 22:43Brandan: But I, I was trying to think after the, that news came down, have
- 22:48you ever seen a guy take two years away from the league and command what is
- 22:55essentially at least top 10 money at a position after that long of a break?
- 23:02It seems unprecedented.
- 23:04Adam: At the age of 35?
- 23:06Right.
- 23:06Brandan: No.
- 23:06I
- 23:06Adam: have never seen- Because
- 23:06Brandan: the, the closest thing I could think of was when Marshawn came back.
- 23:10It was after a, maybe a year, maybe a little over a year for that playoff run
- 23:15in 2019, and he signed for a million dollars, which was, because it was
- 23:22at the end of the season, it ended up being a cap hit of like 60,000.
- 23:28Yeah.
- 23:28And, so for, and, and that was, Marshawn was 33 at the time, not 35.
- 23:35He was closer to when he had left, and I mean, it wasn't…
- 23:40We didn't get, you know, Marshawn Lynch like we, we knew and loved Marshawn
- 23:44at the end of the season either.
- 23:46Adam: No.
- 23:47And I think that's kind of the biggest question mark about the Donald thing
- 23:52and I'm sure even the most ardent, to Ram fans would tell you the
- 23:57same thing is that, look, I mean, he is 35 years old, and I don't care
- 24:03how great of a player you are, like, Father Time catches up to everybody.
- 24:09And so my big question is, do we see a version of Aaron Donald that's
- 24:14closer to, like, Cardinals JJ Watt?
- 24:17Right?
- 24:17Like great, great player.
- 24:19Like, I put JJ Watt as generational as Aaron Donald in my book.
- 24:23Brandan: Yeah.
- 24:23Adam: and look, I mean, you get older and you're just not that same
- 24:28type of player, no matter what.
- 24:30It's just how the, how the body works.
- 24:35Brandan: No name in chat saying- Oh… "We Donald care.
- 24:38Super Bowl Seahawks."
- 24:40Yeah, it's…
- 24:41Well, the thing about Aaron Donald, we're not seeing that Rams team
- 24:45until Christmas, so it's, it, it's a, it's a little while until
- 24:49we have to worry about those guys.
- 24:51Adam: Yeah.
- 24:52big, a lot of big weeks in between there and Christmas, right?
- 24:58And we'll see what trajectory both teams are on and all of that.
- 25:01And I think you look at both of their rosters and, you know, this
- 25:06is still a star-studded roster for the Seattle Seahawks, even if the
- 25:10national media won't, you know, give them the credit for that.
- 25:14Because the first thing that I saw from Rams headlines with, with Aaron
- 25:17Donald was, "Star-studded Rams 53 roster finalized," and it's like
- 25:23okay, they're not the only ones.
- 25:27Brandan: Jason Turner saying Caler has 16 more pounds than Russell, than Russell
- 25:30so he would be a great fit at fullback.
- 25:33I, I know I've- Mm… I've heard some whispers about Caler up possibly
- 25:37playing a little bit of fullback.
- 25:39If they were going to do that, like wouldn't you rep Caler up at fullback
- 25:44a little bit in the preseason?
- 25:46Adam: one would think.
- 25:48I mean, it's not like he wasn't there to do it.
- 25:51Brandan: Yeah, and it's not like it's, he was one of those depth pieces
- 25:55that, oh, we really need to have him.
- 25:57Look, we saw Brady Russell take snaps, we saw Lampey, take snaps.
- 26:01I, I, I just- I, I guess that's a thing that I will believe it when I see it.
- 26:07It, it just seems like a lot of…
- 26:09It seems like more talk than…
- 26:14I, I, I'm, I'm willing to give that credence until there is, like
- 26:17actual Keller up at fullback snaps.
- 26:20Adam: Yeah, not a lot of, like, evidence that you've seen for it.
- 26:23Right.
- 26:23Just more lip service.
- 26:24And look, to further your point too, Brandan, it's not like Ouzts got
- 26:27hurt yesterday, and so they were like, "No, we're set at fullback.
- 26:31Why would we put Keller up back there and give him some tries?"
- 26:34You know?
- 26:35Ouzts has been hurt for a while now.
- 26:37Yeah.
- 26:37And so you'd think if they were interested in doing that, maybe they are
- 26:41in practice and we just don't see it.
- 26:43But again, this is why I am so-… bleeping stoked, Brandan.
- 26:48I am so stoked that today is the last of, like, the off-season GM'ing part
- 26:54of football and we're onto football.
- 26:57Like, actual football.
- 26:58I can't wait.
- 27:00Brandan: We will get to see how it plays out, Michael Knight, with $5 saying
- 27:04"I absolutely love the Rams are all in.
- 27:06Let's do this.
- 27:07Love the NFC West.
- 27:09Proud to be in the best division in football.
- 27:11Rams smell that home Super Bowl.
- 27:13I don't blame them, but the chip goes through Seattle."
- 27:16And see, that's again, what you're talking about there, Adam.
- 27:18The, the beautiful thing is that now we get to play it out.
- 27:22We get to see what a 35-year-old Aaron Donald looks like, against
- 27:28the, the Niners in week one after we finish our week one game
- 27:33against the New England Patriots.
- 27:35Adam: That is correct.
- 27:36And we're gonna see what 35-year-old Aaron Donald looks like in, you know, week 10
- 27:42or whatever it is what week Christmas is.
- 27:45Like, he, he's got a long ways to go, so that'll be interesting.
- 27:48I think as I look down the list of the roster here, Brandan, like
- 27:52obviously not a ton of big surprise.
- 27:54They're returning a ton of dudes this year.
- 27:56I'd say probably your biggest concern when you're looking at all this is not
- 28:00because of personnel moves, but just because of pre-season performance
- 28:03and you're looking at the kicker.
- 28:05And did you see Jason Myers' response to Greg Bell asking
- 28:09him about the pre-season stuff?
- 28:11Brandan: Oh, no.
- 28:13Adam: He's like, "Yeah, so, you know, what's going on, J My?"
- 28:16And he's like, "Oh, you know, just kicking things."
- 28:20And he's like, "Well, I mean, is it something you're
- 28:22working on or this, that?"
- 28:23And then he's like, "It's just, you know, it's just kicking things.
- 28:26That's just, just things you go through, and I'm, I'm, I'm working on it.
- 28:29I'll have it, I'll have it sussed out, you know, basically."
- 28:32Brandan: Wait, so does that response- And it was like- Does that, bother you?
- 28:35Yes.
- 28:35Or does that make you feel better?
- 28:37Adam: It bothers me so much because kickers are so effing weird.
- 28:41They are so weird.
- 28:42They're in their own little world.
- 28:44Like, nobody wants it…
- 28:45Mike doesn't even wanna address it, because you don't wanna
- 28:47go and talk to the kicker.
- 28:48Like, it's like talking to a pitcher.
- 28:50Like, it's even more- Yeah, mess with their head… m- more in their heads.
- 28:53Like, yeah, man, it's like, no, it's not just kicking things, dude.
- 28:57Like, that doesn't make me feel an ounce better.
- 29:00b- you know what would make me feel a lot better is when you come out and
- 29:03you're just drilling them in week one.
- 29:05Do that
- 29:08Brandan: We got Scott Campbell Photography- What's up… with 14.99
- 29:11Australian.
- 29:12"Hey, boys, exciting times with the 53-man roster being set.
- 29:15Bring on week one as I'll be in Seattle for the game.
- 29:19Let's lower the banner and beat the Pats.
- 29:21Excited for another year of the pod."
- 29:24Well, it'll be great to see you there, Scott, because, let's
- 29:28see, I talked to Tracy, Adam.
- 29:29She's gonna have her tailgate set up, so I'll be- Yeah.
- 29:32if you go to getintheflock.com
- 29:34we'll, we'll have it posted where we're planning on meeting up for the
- 29:37tailgate the morning of the game.
- 29:39We're planning on meeting at 13 Coins, Tuesday night before the game.
- 29:44I suppose we should find a post-game spot to settle down at because
- 29:48yeah, you and I are gonna be at the Patriots game too, buddy.
- 29:51Hell yeah.
- 29:51Along with Clinton, and yeah.
- 29:53Adam: Yeah.
- 29:53It's gonna be a ball.
- 29:54Can't wait to see the championship banners drop, all of it.
- 29:58Can't wait to see sad Patriot face again.
- 30:00That's gonna be a good time.
- 30:01It's gonna be great, man.
- 30:02I can't wait to see all y'all, including you, Scott.
- 30:05This is gonna be great.
- 30:07Brandan: Dad Golf saying, "Didn't we have a kicker who was
- 30:10hot one year and cold the next?
- 30:11Hot then cold."
- 30:12Yes, that was Jason
- 30:13Adam: Myers.
- 30:13That's the
- 30:13Brandan: kicker.
- 30:15Adam: Yeah.
- 30:15Brandan: but I think we worked…
- 30:18So I think this might actually be…
- 30:21He's missed five or more kicks in the regular season every other season, and I
- 30:26think, was it, I think it was last year.
- 30:29Yeah.
- 30:29Last year he missed five or more, so this is supposed to actually be his good year.
- 30:34Adam: Yeah, there you go.
- 30:35And the one question I have, though, because this is, you know
- 30:3980% half metal for these kickers.
- 30:41Like, we've got a mental coach, somebody who's working with
- 30:45Ricky Gervais, right?
- 30:46In- Michael
- 30:47Brandan: Gervais.
- 30:48Adam: Michael Gervais or whatever his name is.
- 30:50He's, he's a Gervais.
- 30:51He's one of the Gervais.
- 30:52in, in Mr.
- 30:54Hauschka, right?
- 30:54Like, he's a kicker.
- 30:56He knows the mentals, and he's, like, a, a coach at these things.
- 30:59Like, I need Jason Myers to get with Hauschka, like, right now.
- 31:04Brandan: NuBlack saying, "I'm actually pretty pissed Rams get a
- 31:07roster exemption for Donald for two games so they can carry an extra guy."
- 31:11I, I have not heard that, but, that doesn't seem right to me.
- 31:15Adam: Yeah, we'll find out, but it would not shock me
- 31:18in the slightest because- Yeah
- 31:19Brandan: they're giving the, giving the Rams benefits.
- 31:21Yeah.
- 31:21They haven't announced…
- 31:22Well, what, what we have to wait and see is if they're gonna be…
- 31:25If Alaric Jackson isn't suspended, like, if that announcement doesn't
- 31:30come this week, there's something funny going on with the NFL and their
- 31:33ra- and their suspensions if, if…
- 31:35Puka I'm unsure on, but Alaric Jackson, like, there, there should be no
- 31:40reason why that dude isn't suspended.
- 31:42Adam: No.
- 31:42If you're being accused of, domestic violence now for the second
- 31:46time, then I can't understand how you're not at the very least- After
- 31:51Brandan: you got suspended for two games the first time
- 31:53… Adam: this is what I'm saying.
- 31:54How are you not on the commissioner's exempt list already?
- 31:57Brandan: Yeah.
- 31:58I, it has to happen this week, I'm sure.
- 32:01Oh, NuBlack saying Tom Pelissero tweeted.
- 32:02Okay, well then, the, there there's some kind of- All right…
- 32:06exemption there for Aaron Donald.
- 32:08I don't know, because he's old?
- 32:09Because, I, I, I-
- 32:11Adam: Because it has to work in
- 32:13Brandan: LA It has, has to work in LA, so.
- 32:15Marlon saying Puka expected this week.
- 32:17Yeah, w- I, I expect it too, but y- if we're just finding out that these magical
- 32:22exemptions exist for old guys that decide to return to the NFL apparently.
- 32:27Adam: I- if they return for the LA Rams.
- 32:30Right.
- 32:30That, that's where the magical exemption comes in.
- 32:31Brandan: Yeah.
- 32:32Well, then why didn't we get one for Trevon Diggs?
- 32:34Why, why do we
- 32:34Adam: have to- Are we the LA Rams?
- 32:35No, because we're awesome and they blow, so, like, that's, that's
- 32:39the answer to your question.
- 32:40Brandan: Yeah, there we go.
- 32:41So, okay.
- 32:41So kicker is one position group that we're a little bit concerned about.
- 32:46num- if, if that one's number one, just based on the pre-season
- 32:50and what we saw- Yeah… from Jason Myers and only making three kicks.
- 32:53number two position group that you would be worried about
- 32:58I think has to either be between running back or cornerback
- 33:03Adam: Interesting.
- 33:03I actually feel okay with running back because Holani's a guy.
- 33:08Like, he's a guy.
- 33:09Yeah.
- 33:09And he can do running back things.
- 33:11everybody else is higher on Wilson than I am, so I'll defer
- 33:14to everybody else on that one.
- 33:16So like, comfortable enough with that.
- 33:18And I really like Jadarian, and I think that he has a fantastic chance
- 33:22to be a very good back in the system.
- 33:26And then, you know, we always have the, you know, extra boost of Charbonnet
- 33:29coming back, at some point here.
- 33:32I did want to, address, Ducks, Ducks Blazers here.
- 33:36He says he's new and hello and, well, hello to you, buddy.
- 33:40Yeah, welcome.
- 33:41Thanks for stopping by.
- 33:41Yeah, love to having you, man.
- 33:43This is great.
- 33:45Okay… for me, the, the position group that I get a little
- 33:48worried about is just safety, only because of depth at this point.
- 33:52Brandan: Okay.
- 33:52So it is safety for you.
- 33:54'Cause I, I like, I like the starters, right?
- 33:57Julian Love, Ty Okada, Yeah, I feel
- 33:59Adam: good about
- 33:59Brandan: that… like we- we've seen, and Nick Emmanwori obviously.
- 34:02And Corner, that's- that's why I feel like for me, it, it does go to running
- 34:07back because y- y- You don't know what Price is going to be until you see him.
- 34:14There is that wait- Yep… until Charbonnet gets back, and Halani
- 34:19yeah, he's, he's just a guy, but I wanna have that dominant running game.
- 34:24But as long as the offensive line can, can make that happen, then I, I suppose
- 34:28we've seen all those years of, you know, Shanahan Broncos running backs that just
- 34:33ran behind a dominant offensive line.
- 34:36Adam: Yeah, and that's the thing, is that when I'm looking
- 34:38at running backs in this sort of system, think of all the dudes that
- 34:42have been through San Francisco.
- 34:43Think of all the guys that, Mike McDaniel was able to run through down
- 34:48there in Miami and get big seasons out of.
- 34:51Like, this is the sort of system that, you know, you find a guy like Peyton
- 34:54Hillis, and all of a sudden he's on the cover of Madden the next year.
- 34:58You know?
- 34:58Yeah.
- 34:58Or CJ Anderson or, you know, guys like that.
- 35:01So
- 35:02Brandan: I feel like the- And, and I would feel better about that
- 35:04though, if we had consistently produced guys like that the way that
- 35:07the Broncos did for all those years.
- 35:09And, and so I, I suppose that if we move on from Ken Walker and, and we
- 35:16see some dominant run performances then through these first four weeks, well
- 35:20m- maybe we'll just end up chalking it up to Jadarian Price being good, too
- 35:23if, if he's the guy that we see it from.
- 35:25But, I, I guess that's the, that's the one area that I'm watching
- 35:29for the most to prove it to me.
- 35:34Adam: Look, I get it, because there is the unknown of it, and I
- 35:37totally understand that, and I think it's a, a completely reasonable
- 35:40place to come from on that.
- 35:42you said something along the lines of, like, "I'd feel more comfortable if
- 35:46we had that track record," like, say, the Broncos did there for a while, or the
- 35:49Niners have had and that sort of thing.
- 35:51Well, how do you start that track record?
- 35:54You start by doing it just like this, right?
- 35:56Yeah.
- 35:56We, we had a good year last year.
- 35:57Like, this is year two.
- 35:59We're right at the beginning of starting that track record.
- 36:02Brandan: Yeah, like Marlon85's saying in chat, "Ken who?"
- 36:05Yeah.
- 36:05Ken who
- 36:05Adam: what?
- 36:05Brandan: I, I wanna…
- 36:06That's what I wanna be saying is, "Ken who?"
- 36:08When, we start rolling off big running back games.
- 36:11Adam: Here's the thing I will not miss about Ken Walker, and
- 36:13even though I've missed Ken Walker.
- 36:15Right?
- 36:15Like, I, I do.
- 36:16I love Kenny Walker, but, he's, he's already got a foot
- 36:20injury because of his shoes.
- 36:22Right.
- 36:23Like, just like…
- 36:24I, I'm, I'm glad that's not-
- 36:26Brandan: We, we, we live through that every preseason, right?
- 36:28Was, what's the, the canine injury that's gonna sideline him-
- 36:32Yeah… and, and make us worry, through the first part of the season?
- 36:35Adam: I think two years ago he had, like, a game or two missed
- 36:38because of shoe injury or something like that-… if I remember right.
- 36:43Brandan: the Charlie the Unicorn, "Will Seattle pull
- 36:45off another trade soon?"
- 36:48They made a trade at corner.
- 36:50I…
- 36:51If they were to make a trade, where would it, where would it be?
- 36:56I think there would have to be an injury that would
- 37:00precipitate a trade- Yeah… or
- 37:05I, I guess maybe at edge would be a spot to where
- 37:11like, the Connor O'Toole spot.
- 37:12Like, I could see us getting better there, or
- 37:18Adam: At, at, at fifth end?
- 37:19Brandan: At, at fifth edge or…
- 37:22Yeah, but that's where some of these trades are gonna happen, right?
- 37:24Because it's, you're talking about trading sixth and seventh rounders
- 37:27of, of guys who, you know, have pieces that you wanna add to, to depth.
- 37:33So, yeah.
- 37:36It, I, I think it would…
- 37:37If there would be anything it would be on the defensive line, I would think.
- 37:41Adam: Would it rhyme with Schmack Schmosby?
- 37:45As the, as the snail had there?
- 37:47Brandan: Yeah.
- 37:47Adam: Is that on your radar at all?
- 37:48Brandan: It's not on my radar, but now it is.
- 37:53Adam: Yeah, I don't know.
- 37:54we'll see what happens here.
- 37:57It do- I'm with you, though.
- 37:58It does feel as if it would be an injury-related thing and, you
- 38:03know, knock on the wood right now, like, that that doesn't happen.
- 38:07Brandan: Yeah.
- 38:08I, we don't want any more injuries, but, you know, they, they
- 38:13will be inevitable and, you just deal with them from there.
- 38:18But, overall, 53-man roster, liking the look of it, Adam.
- 38:25I, I, I'm feeling good.
- 38:26Feeling good about this team going into week one against the Patriots.
- 38:30Adam: Yeah, man.
- 38:30I'm feeling good about it.
- 38:31I'm feeling good about JeffArcher69 here.
- 38:34He said he subbed here on a earlier comment and that he's loving-
- 38:36Hey-… the conversation… welcome, Jeff We're loving the sub, dude.
- 38:39Appreciate it, man.
- 38:40If you're new to the channel here, as we enter…
- 38:42Is this year 13 for us, Brandan?
- 38:44Is that what we decided?
- 38:45Season 13.
- 38:45Oh, gosh.
- 38:46I- Season 14.
- 38:47Whatever.
- 38:47in the teens.
- 38:49look, we do this every single week.
- 38:52We put out five shows a week during the regular season.
- 38:55We got a really cool preview show in, What If.
- 39:00We've got Three and Three out, which recaps the previous game
- 39:03and we talk about some of the nooks and crannies that maybe a lot of
- 39:06other folks aren't talking about.
- 39:07We've got our flagship every single week, which is me and Brandan, and
- 39:11we go through the, previous game and the upcoming game as well.
- 39:16we do, Saturday News and Notes, along with Blue Friday
- 39:19Bets, and that's pretty cool.
- 39:21Does that get us to five?
- 39:21Oh, yeah.
- 39:22We also do the ins- instant reaction after the games on
- 39:25Sundays or Mondays or whatever.
- 39:27I guess this time it'll be Wednesday, for week one.
- 39:30But yeah, if you're new here, lot of great content that we
- 39:33pump out every single week.
- 39:34We'd love to have you as one of our little Flockers in, along for the
- 39:38ride as we're running this forward.
- 39:40Brandan: Saw one of the, the questions in chat was…
- 39:44Oh, here it is.
- 39:45From, For Me To Be, "What's the biggest name on another team
- 39:51who didn't make the roster?"
- 39:53And, I- Oof… I think a lot of the names that I saw
- 39:57were ones that it wouldn't be…
- 40:00They wouldn't be dudes that we would bring in.
- 40:02Like, Will Levis was one of the guys who got cut from the Titans and
- 40:06Cam Miller got cut from the Dolphins.
- 40:08so m- a lot of quarterbacks were kind of highlighted among those names.
- 40:13I think, the one for me that was the most interesting that
- 40:17was Evan Neal for the Giants, Adam.
- 40:20And-
- 40:21Adam: Oh, interesting.
- 40:22Okay
- 40:22… Brandan: the, the fact that he got cut from the Giants But we've just
- 40:27got done talking about how much depth we have on the offensive line, but a
- 40:31former number seven overall pick- Yeah
- 40:33in the '22 draft.
- 40:35yeah.
- 40:37that, that one's interesting.
- 40:39Adam: It's interesting, but we also went down that path
- 40:41with John for a while, right?
- 40:43Where we're bringing in, you know, former first round offensive lineman
- 40:48the dude from the Jags at tackle.
- 40:51Brandan: that they brought up- Oh
- 40:52Adam: Luke Jokl.
- 40:52Yeah, Jokl, for a minute.
- 40:55And yeah, there was a few of them during that timeframe, and after that experience
- 41:00in my fandom, I'm good on it.
- 41:02Like I, I, I don't need- I don't need to explore that again.
- 41:07Brandan: The Snail saying, "Joined October 13, 2013."
- 41:12Doesn't say when your first video was.
- 41:14It wa- 20…
- 41:14Well, our first, our first season was the Super Bowl season.
- 41:19It was.
- 41:19So it's just so much math to try and count backwards that many years to try
- 41:23and figure out, yeah, when it was.
- 41:26Adam: Yeah, yeah.
- 41:28So, yeah.
- 41:29Brandan: Whatever.
- 41:30We started at the start of
- 41:31Adam: the Super Bowl season.
- 41:32We started before that though, because we, we were doing the audio pod before we
- 41:35started putting the audio on YouTube too.
- 41:36Brandan: I, but I think we created the YouTube channel, later that year.
- 41:41Adam: Right.
- 41:41Brandan: So it was that same year.
- 41:42Oh, you said October- Well, same
- 41:43Adam: year.
- 41:43Yeah, yeah.
- 41:44I'm just saying like, it was, we started before the season started, so
- 41:47it wasn't like we started mid-season.
- 41:50There you go.
- 41:50We, we started the pod to, go ahead and, you know
- 41:54win the Super Bowl, so…
- 41:56Brandan: For me to be, first person to read my name right, Go Hawks.
- 41:59It, it was completely by accident.
- 42:01Adam: Hey, I don't even know- If I didn't miss Brandan, I
- 42:03would've [bleep] that up for sure.
- 42:05Yep.
- 42:06Brandan: appreciate everybody joining us, as we're talking
- 42:09about the 53-man roster tonight.
- 42:11We just wanted to go live and kinda react to what we saw.
- 42:14And, yeah, appreciate everybody joining in.
- 42:17And as I mentioned, getintheflock.com
- 42:19we still have about 10 tickets left, if you wanna join us
- 42:23for the opening weekend, and, tickets are about 260 a piece.
- 42:27So, getintheflock.com
- 42:29if you wanna get that info.
- 42:30I meant to post that today, and I, I haven't yet, so I'm, I'm gonna go
- 42:33do that now after we finish up here.
- 42:34Adam: Yep.
- 42:35We'll get after that.
- 42:36and, yeah, come meet the Flockers as, Charlie the Unicorn says.
- 42:39Adam: Absolutely.
- 42:41No, it's awesome.
- 42:44And look, man, what a cool journey to be on with all of you guys as we
- 42:50Rams implode as most super teams do.
- 43:14Brandan: Go Hawks.
- 43:16Adam: Go Hawks.
