Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: FTA'S need to be done
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Those opposing our FTA with India, I think have got
- 0:03Speaker 1: to be guilty of something quite serious economic treason to
- 0:07Speaker 1: New Zealand. We're a small trading nation. Everyone knows that
- 0:10Speaker 1: we've got lots of food and we need to feed
- 0:12Speaker 1: other people. And we've got red meat. We need to
- 0:15Speaker 1: get that to market. We got milk, we need to
- 0:17Speaker 1: get that to market. We got milk powder, we need
- 0:20Speaker 1: to get it to market. The closer the country, the better.
- 0:23Speaker 1: The higher value add the better and the sugar. On
- 0:26Speaker 1: top of all of all, the top of all of
- 0:28Speaker 1: this is tariff free access, so that our competitive advantage,
- 0:33Speaker 1: of which we do have one producing the world's best
- 0:36Speaker 1: dairy and sheep and beef and kiwi fruit can all
- 0:40Speaker 1: be admired and loved by the world at a reasonable price.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Now Helen Clark knew this well, so did Phil GoF
- 0:46Speaker 1: and they signed a deal to in Beijing in two
- 0:49Speaker 1: thousand and seven. Two way trade then was eight billion dollars.
- 0:53Speaker 1: It's now forty one billion dollars. It's now our largest
- 0:57Speaker 1: trading partner. We are on the cuss of another bonanza,
- 1:01Speaker 1: just with a country much bigger and a middle class
- 1:05Speaker 1: that's about to crack open. It's the third going to
- 1:10Speaker 1: be the third largest economy in the world. It's very close. However,
- 1:15Speaker 1: some Kiwi politicians believe this is somehow a bad thing.
- 1:19Speaker 1: That's selling our best produce to other countries at cheaper prices,
- 1:24Speaker 1: unencumbered by another tax regime. How is that not a
- 1:28Speaker 1: good idea because we have to take an extra seventeen
- 1:32Speaker 1: hundred Indians on working visas to come here. So what
- 1:36Speaker 1: they work hard? Guess what they hustle. Guess what they
- 1:42Speaker 1: don't piss around fishing at the beach or sitting on
- 1:45Speaker 1: the couch when they should be working. Migrants do the
- 1:48Speaker 1: jobs that we Kiwis feel that they're too posh to
- 1:51Speaker 1: do in society, don't they. It's hard work, it's on
- 1:54Speaker 1: us work and it needs to be done. Why not
- 1:55Speaker 1: let the people who want to work work. This country
- 2:00Speaker 1: should be filled with ambitious people who want to make
- 2:03Speaker 1: the most of it, and that's what FDAs do and
- 2:07Speaker 1: I can't understand people who don't. For more from early
- 2:11Speaker 1: edition with Ryan Bridge. Listen live to News Talks at
