- 1:41of The Amazing Mister Malone, which finds a new Mister Malone in the position.
- 1:47After one hundred and fifteen episodes, Frank Lovejoy left the series and went
- 1:53over to NBC. He started a show called Here Comes McBride, which didn't
- 2:00make it, but he would eventually land the role of his radio career that
- 2:06old time radio fans most remember him for, as Randy Stone in Not Bait.
- 2:10For the nineteen forty nine to fifty season, ABC signed Gene Raymond,
- 2:17a veteran film actor, to take on the role of mister Malone. There
- 2:23are quite a few partial episodes from this series that survive, However, the
- 2:31first full episode that I've been able to find with Gene Raymond is the nineteenth
- 2:38episode from his run. This episode aired on January the twenty ninth, nineteen
- 2:44fifty, and the title is The Devil finds work for Idle Hands Operator Operator
- 2:52Getting Me the Office of John came Alonge. The American Broadcasting Company presents The
- 3:04Amazing Mister Malone, an exciting half hour of mysteries starring Geene Raymond. Our
- 3:09locale is the city of Chicago, the time, the presence. I'm the
- 3:15hero of these weekly adventures, The Amazing Mister Malone. Malone is the name
- 3:35John J. Malone, Attorney and counselor at law. If you're one of
- 3:38our regulars, you know how fond I am of flea change tonight, I'd
- 3:42like to direct your attention to that oldie devil finds work for idle hands.

- 8:05Be reasonable, will you? Mac? I couldn't follow Ruther on. Why
- 8:09not? Let's skip that for now. There's a lot more important things to
- 8:11do getting you out of the country over a jump, Harris, I'm gonna
- 8:15stay right here. Get out of your mind. You know that's the trouble

- 10:35the first thing tomorrow, Ruth, you find out and make an appointment

- 10:56Malone doesn't come in morning. Yeah, what are you gonna do? Make
- 11:00myself comfortable while I wait? Yeah, I think this is not to do
- 11:03the trick, But you know it's the old man hasn't lost his touch on
- 11:11Ruby, Matt listen to but honey, I did inside all right? Now,

- 11:33Of course I did, not coming in here. I don't know, all
- 11:39right, So I am I never called him alone. You didn't, honest,
- 11:41Mac, I was only thinking of your welfare. But you were.
- 11:45And the next time I tell you to do something, do it. I
- 11:46don't need any masterminding, Are you kidding? I got news for you,
- 11:52sweetheart, even a joliet. I heard a couple of stories about you.
- 11:54They were about me and aren't Lucas. They were alive? Was the name
- 11:56again, Lucas? Come on to me. Fuck up, Ruthie. I'm
- 12:03gonna know the square if I have to break every bone in that lovely body.
- 12:05I'm wanting you, Matthew, stay away from me. You're me,
- 12:07you big ape. Put a finger on me and I'll put a finger on
- 12:11you and we'll feel it up more damage. It was just one alad things,
- 12:28just one of those crazy things, one of those that's right. I've
- 12:35been waiting for you. Switch generally wait inside, skip at your on your
- 12:43mind, Miss Andrews, missus and I but you've still got something on your
- 12:48mind, didn't we talking? You sure? Come right in, missus Andrews.
- 13:00No, and second thought, stay right where you are. Not that
- 13:05he did. He isn't as reasonable a fact similar as you can get with
- 13:09two slugs in the brain. Oh McKenzie. One of the men who broke
- 13:16out of jail yesterday. How would you know I recognize him the picture I
- 13:20would have what you called the place your mind. Oh, Matt, all
- 13:28right, Missus Andrew, you stay right here till I get back Mackenzie.
- 13:31I wouldn't worry in his condition. I think we can prevail upon him to
- 13:35hang around too. You're already of mine, Malone. Mackenzie was in the
- 13:50car with Wayne when it went off at Drawbridge near Jolliett. And they recovered
- 13:54the bodies yet, Lieutenant, Wow, And I know I never will,
- 13:56at least not until McKenzie's because it's McKenzie's body is right here in my office
- 14:03and Missus Andrews, A missus looks like nobody's home. I don't get it,
- 14:09Brooks. I left her standing right by the smoke when happened to the
- 14:13bodies. What body? I told you, McKenzie's. It was lying right
- 14:16the end of the switchboard. Look, Malone, if you've got nothing better
- 14:20to do, you've gotta believe me, Lieutenant. Why would I make up
- 14:22a yarn like that? That's what I'm wondering. But whatever your reason is,
- 14:26it better be funny. I tell you. The line was cut and
- 14:30it seems to be all right now they mister Patrick. Oh sure, where
- 14:35was this missus Andrews living at the Renner departments? That's Fleming O seven hundred
- 14:41at it wasting your timeless tennant. Whoever removes McKenzie must have taken her along
- 14:46to the right. She won't be in I know. There's only one question
- 14:48in my mind whether she ever was. Are you calling me? It quiet?
- 14:56You got to missus Susan Andrews registered there. Hello, Missus Susan Andrews.
- 15:05Hey, there is such a person see there? Now let me talk
- 15:09wait your turn. Hello, Hello, missus Andrews is Lieutenant Brooks of the
- 15:13Homicide Bureau. Do you ever hear of a lawyer named John J. Malone?
- 15:18Hello? No, and you weren't in his office this morning. I
- 15:24don't know how I could your called. Just lea, thank you, Missus
- 15:28Andrews, your witness counselor you are listening to the Amazing Mister Malone starring Jean
- 15:39Raymond. The year in nineteen fifty March the twelfth anniversary of the National Foundation
- 15:50for Infantile Paralysis founded by Franklin D. Roosevelt. The National Foundation for Infantile
- 15:56Paralysis through March of Dimes Funds, is still caring for thousands of victims stricken
- 16:00by polio in previous years. This ever increasing load must be met by March
- 16:06of Dimes campaign funds each year. The cost of medical care has increased.
- 16:11It takes more money this year than ever before, the pay for hot packs
- 16:15that relieve pain, iron lungs that take the place of human lungs paralyzed by
- 16:19pollio, physical therapy to help the patient recover, control of weakened muscles,
- 16:25hospitalization, nurses, and medical care that are often required for months and years.
- 16:30Besides, a way of preventing this disease must be found if our youngsters
- 16:33are to be free from the constant threat of crippling. To continue caring for
- 16:37old cases, to provide help for those who will be stricken by polio this
- 16:41year, to keep up the desperately needed all out research program of tracking down
- 16:47the preventive and cure for polio. We must all give more generously than ever
- 16:51before when we join the March of Dimes. And now back to the amazing
- 16:56mister Malone. When you practice criminal law in a city like Chicago, Schooy,
- 17:15things are found to happen. What gets me, is why they all
- 17:18happen? To Malone. I rarely go to my office, and the first
- 17:19time I do in weeks, I'm met by a blonde named Susan Andrews and
- 17:23the corpse. Twenty minutes later, both had disappeared. Missus Andrews was denying
- 17:29on the phone she's seen either of us. After I got rid of Lieutenant
- 17:33Brooks, I chased over to the reign of departments. Hello, missus Andrews,
- 17:41remember me? Yeah? I love her. It's Malone. Won't you
- 17:44come in trying to keep me out? All right? Missus Andrews, what's
- 17:48this all about? Listen, Susie, I'm in no mood for evasions.
- 17:52You saw me find Mackenzie's body this morning, yes, you, and I
- 17:55want to know why you're lied about it on the phone. I don't know
- 17:57what you're talking about, like a woman, but in your case, it's
- 18:02coming back to you now, Malone, believe happened. The cops think I'm
- 18:07crazy for the rest of my life. Oh no, Now, what went
- 18:10on in that office after I left? Malone? Please, I'll make it
- 18:11easy for you. You had a visitor, didn't you. Who was he?
- 18:17What did he tell you? Keep my mouth shut. Never mind,
- 18:21I can imagine what otherwise was then what happened? Picked body and disappeared?
- 18:26It wasn't as simple as all. That's Susie. You don't walk around the
- 18:27streets of Chicago with a dead body on your hands. That might cause talk.
- 18:32How did he get rid of it and you followed him? Don't lie,
- 18:37Susie. You must have what was the license number? I didn't think.
- 18:41I'm warning you, sweetheart. All right, Susie, you've been a
- 18:48great help. I think I can take it from there. Well, I'm
- 19:03looking for a gent named Larry Harris. My name is John J. Malone
- 19:07in the dark. I don't see why Harris, you're up to my office
- 19:10this morning? Weren't you? Where'd you get that? Screwy it? You
- 19:12own a forty nine buick license number eight L four six three. Don't you
- 19:15know? You better inform a license duel. According to their records, the
- 19:18car belongs to you, so what if it does? I parked near the
- 19:22freight entrance to my building today or building. I thought the Presco was owned
- 19:26by some corporation, and you were there supposing I was. Well, if
- 19:29you'd admitted that before, we could have saved a lot of time. What
- 19:32did you do with Mackenzie's body? Strictly between us? Malone? I don't
- 19:34see how that's any of your business. Were You're wrong, Harris? When
- 19:37someone uses my office for a slaughter house, it concerns me vitally. Yeah,
- 19:41yeah, I suppose when you look at it that way, you've got
- 19:44to beef with the five hundred bucks. Take care of it only if I
- 19:48can take it out of information. I'll listen alone. Let me give you
- 19:49a little chip. Nobody's got hurt except Mackenzie. No skin off of your
- 19:53nose, forget it. And if I don't, someone's liable to get sore
- 19:56right? And who might that be? Oh? I don't like to mention
- 19:59names, but it might very possibly be me. You don't know, you
- 20:00don't we going on? What's the matter? Can't you stand a little pressure
- 20:04on pres I don't want to convince you. I mean business. Now.
- 20:07What was your tie up with Mackenzie? You can go, come on,
- 20:11Sphil, we were friends. He was hold up here last night. Why
- 20:15did he want to see me? I don't know. I'm sure, I
- 20:17tell you, I don't know. Would you know what happened to all that?
- 20:19Money yet stashed away? What money? McKenzie was serving time for a
- 20:23payroll robbery? They never found a dough. I never saw a penny of
- 20:26it. And who did he spent all his girlfriend before they caught him?
- 20:30It sounds like a physical impossibility. It was close to a quarter of a
- 20:33million dollars. Harris, you don't know this girl, no, but i'd
- 20:37like to what's her name? Ruth Nelson? That's one more thing. Did
- 20:40you kill McKenzie and then go back to your office to remove his body?
- 20:42Or what do you think? I don't know, but maybe Ruth Nelson can
- 20:45help me arrive at some satisfactory answer later. Later, I help you,
- 21:00madam. Ye wait a minute, you're no way hi. I still wouldn't
- 21:03mind serving you now, i'd say off hand, you're the Scotch and soda
- 21:08type, very easy on the soda. That's pretty good, and I by
- 21:12you one. Aren't you afraid I might have a jealous boyfriend? Well?
- 21:15Have you probably know the best way to handle him? Sit down, all
- 21:19right, waiter, Scotcha's soda is here? What did he call you?
- 21:26Quiet? Did he sound? Is your name alone? Well? I was
- 21:30keeping it for a surprise. We beat it. What kind of hospitality do
- 21:34you call that? I didn't turn you out when you're dropped in at my
- 21:37office. Weren't you there this morning with McKenzie? No, you had to
- 21:41do better, Ue hmm. I couldn't forget that perfume Max send you over
- 21:48to apologize? Why should he let me tell you slap me around? Did
- 21:51you do walk out any? Wouldn't you? Well? I wasn't going steady
- 21:55with him, so it's hard to say. Where does he get off of
- 21:56choosing me of two timing and with Ronold Lucas, aren't you No, Mac
- 22:00doesn't believe me. He can check it with Ronold. You'll find him at
- 22:03the granger. I kind of doubt that. Incidentally, Ruth, you wouldn't
- 22:07happen to know why McKenzie wanted to see me in the first place. Didn't
- 22:10he tell you he couldn't very well love her? When I first saw him,
- 22:12he was dead murdered to be exact, Malone, Arnold had nothing to
- 22:21do with it. If you did, Ruth, that's good enough for me,
- 22:36said, Oh, would you be kind of a slip it under the
- 22:41door just a moment? Hello? You're not from Western Union? Well?
- 22:51I tried to enlist, but they wouldn't have me. Who are you alone?
- 22:56Is the name John J? Malone alone? What can I do for
- 22:59you? Miss? It's a long story, Lucas. Mind if I make
- 23:02myself comfortable when I tell her, oh, please do and I offer you
- 23:04something that just a couple of answers. You see, I'm a lawyer.
- 23:08Yes, you get to meet a lot of dull people that way. Now
- 23:11you'll never guess how I got in touch with you. But that's not you.
- 23:14Ever hear of a man named Paul Mackenzie once or twice. He's dead?
- 23:18How sir, afy those tears coming? I think I know where the
- 23:22locator is, murderer. How did you accomplish that? Well? I had
- 23:26several fine leads. Its an automobile license plate led me to one Larry Harris.
- 23:32Harris, No, I don't believe I've had the pleasure. No,
- 23:34but you have a mutual friend, Ruth Nelson. Uh uh, She's a
- 23:38wonderful girl, Lucas. I'm so glad you appreciate her fun quality. I'd
- 23:42be an ingrat if I didn't. After all, she gave me you.
- 23:47Hello, Ruth, what are you doing here? You know the boys who
- 23:49knows all the answers getting from that gun in your hand. I can only
- 23:53be one. Never let it be said that you get for two and two
- 23:56together, Darling that pleasure. Well, I'm on your way from alone.
- 24:04I just thought you like, oh no, no, no, We'll have
- 24:07plenty of opportunity for that later. I don't know. Lookus, you better
- 24:11act fast before the police grab you. I don't think there's any danger that
- 24:15you wrong. I got your boyfriend dead to rights, and that's where you're
- 24:18wrong alone, because in a couple of minutes you'll have you dead. Period.
- 24:27You are listening to the amazing mister Malone s Darring Jeane Raymond. Today,
- 24:37America's schools are still suffering from a damage they experienced during and after the
- 24:41war. A shortage of qualified teachers, too few young people preparing to become
- 24:47teachers, classrooms overcrowded in many places, educational plants that are inadequate and in
- 24:52many places obsolete. The situation's very serious. The chief victims are your youngsters.
- 24:57It's now become plain the to give our children the kind of education we
- 25:02want them to have, we must all remain and become fully alert from the
- 25:06factors that go to make a good school system right. Stimulating classrooms and hopeful
- 25:11energetic teachers. Inferior education for American boys and girls means damage to our future
- 25:17prosperity, our traditions of freedom, our very security. Parents and citizens can
- 25:22help by adjoining and working with local civic groups and school boards to improve educational
- 25:27conditions. They can also show, by friendliness and interest that they appreciate the
- 25:33vital importance of the teacher services to them, their children, and their community.
- 25:37A good thing for everybody to remember is that our teachers mold our nation's
- 25:41future. And now back to the amazing mister Malone. I'm just concerning about
- 26:00a woman with a gun, particularly when she aims it at you. Even
- 26:03Arnold Lucas, who is strictly a bystander, was fascinated. What seemed like
- 26:07hours, we all stood there with no one saying a word, and then
- 26:11Ruth went and broke the spell. All right, Malone, Gonny final requests.
- 26:15Now is the time to make them now, Ruth, you know you're
- 26:18not serious about this, But I've got nothing against you now. But you've
- 26:23got plenty against Donald who told you he was wanted in New York. No
- 26:27one you figured that out all by yourself. He's a smart boy, and
- 26:33wouldn't take him long to guess if Mac went to his office. It could
- 26:37only be for one reason. Wanted Malone to make a deal with him.
- 26:40For the police, he wasting his time. Ruth, the state's attorney,
- 26:42never would have accepted it. McKenzie ORed the police plenty for the payroll robbery
- 26:47and a little extra something for that jail break. Lucas would really have to
- 26:51be wanted pretty badly for the cops to forgive and forget. You never can
- 26:55tell no, that's true enough. Well, now that you know it all
- 26:59alone, what he intended to do about it? All right? You are?
- 27:03Since it's my move, I better get out alone. Let me take
- 27:12a look at her going on here. Come in, Harris, you're just
- 27:15in time. I heard a shot. What happened? You see? I
- 27:18didn't mean to kill him alone. I won't cheer up root. You didn't.
- 27:22It's just a scratch. But you're a very careless girl. Anyone would
- 27:26have done the same in my place. I had to protect her. I
- 27:27guess you can't blame her alone. On a gal goes for a guy,
- 27:30there's nothing she want to even try to cover him when you seen him commit
- 27:33murder. We should know that better than you, Harris, meaning what meaning
- 27:37you're the guy she's in love with, You are the one she's covering for.
- 27:40Talking about sorry if I let the cat out of the bag, Roof,
- 27:42But when it comes to murder, I'm just a great big blaber amount,
- 28:02Oh, says he remember me mine, Yeah, I coupled lots of
- 28:07life when I came over with Jaia with the saga of my fiance. I
- 28:11heard all about it on the radio. Anyways, there's the music body no
- 28:17no, I take it established as the mood h they stab on the air,
- 28:22the Terris h McKenzie. They said, right, good? Why I
- 28:26thought they were to the end? Only Harris saw it to it at McKenzie's
- 28:30end came a lot sooner than I normally would. When McKenzie went to jail,
- 28:33he left a quarter of a million dollars worth of loot with his girlfriend,
- 28:37Ruth Nelson, and she and Harris. Uh huh, Well where did
- 28:41this Arnold Lucas sit in? Oh? He was just a patsy in this
- 28:45little affair. Roof was fattening him up for the kill. She led mackenzie
- 28:48to believe that it was Lucas who was his rival, when all along it
- 28:52was his boy. Here, I said, well, what put you on
- 28:55the right track, Ruth? She was too anxious to make sure I didn't
- 28:57overlook a clue. She was the one who sicked me out of Lucas originally.
- 29:02Then she volunteered the information that he was wanted in New York, and
- 29:04then on top of that, she tried to get me to believe that that
- 29:07was the reason Mackenzie came to my office originally, of course not. Mackenzie
- 29:11may have wanted me to work out a deal for him, but never on
- 29:14that thesis. He'd be the first one to realize the police would never accept
- 29:18it. Then what would be the deal? Well, of course, I'm
- 29:21guessing now, but it's the only thing that makes sense. The state's attorney
- 29:25originally offered to let Mackenzie plead guilty to a lesser crime if he turned back
- 29:29the money he iced that payroll, Robbie. I guess after a year and
- 29:32a half and stir McKenzie thought better of it. So if you put all
- 29:34that together, plus the fact that Ruth tried to kill Lucas right in front
- 29:38of me, it'll be silly, that gallant what she was doing? Or
- 29:42do you think I had such an easy time disarming it? And does that
- 29:47answer all your questions? Good? Now we can start on mine. I
- 29:53didn't have time to ask you before. But what were you doing in front
- 29:56of my office earlier in the morning. Well, as I told you,
- 30:00I wanted to see you. Well. I generally handled divorce actions, Susie,
- 30:07but for you, I might make an exception. Suppose you tell me
- 30:11about your husband now, Well, he's handsome, charming, culture, everything
- 30:19a woman could. Hey, wait a minute, you sound like you're still
- 30:22in love with a guy. After I saw you this afternoon, I thought
- 30:29it over and I called him. You should be here any n It's nice.
- 30:34It was all my fault, Malone. I made a mistake. I
- 30:37was just counting on him. Yeah, well, don't feel too badly,
- 30:42Susie. We all make mistakes. I was counting on something too home,
- 30:52Thank you and good night, missus Andrews. I he heard a story and
- 31:02the boy who never found time to play he learned, if you plan your
- 31:06work properly, you'll have time to kill. Tell you all about it next
- 31:08week. So why not pick me up in my own at the same time,
- 31:11I'll be waiting for you. Good night. Gen Raymond will start as
- 31:15John J. Malone, with Henry Morgan as Lieutenant Brooks. Our program is
- 31:19written by Gene Wang and directed by William Pierrussol, music by Basil Ablam.
- 31:25The Amazing Mister Malone is based on the character created by Craig Rice and produced
- 31:29by Bernard L. Schubert. The events and characters depicted in this story were
- 31:33entirely fictional, and any resemblance to actual places of people living or dead is
- 31:37entirely coincidental. And now this is Richard Tufel asking you to listen. Next
- 31:41week The Amazing Mister Malone has come to you from Hollywood and now a listening
- 31:45reminder. Tonight, Lawela Parsons take you to Berlin by Transcetlantic Wire for the
- 31:49world premiere of the Hollywood motion picture Francis. Don't miss the Lawella Parsons Show
- 31:53tonight. This is ABC, the American Broadcasting Company. Welcome back well even
- 32:00after starting into dragnet, Jack Webb not below taking on a guest star role
- 32:08as he does here playing a really bad heavy and of course he appears in
- 32:17this episode along with Harry Morgan, who's listed as Henry Morgan, which I
- 32:23believe was his right name, but it was changed because there was a satirist
- 32:29named Henry Morgan and he didn't want to get confused with him. That,
- 32:32by the way, is also while while m Conway changed his name from Tom
- 32:38to Tim when he first came to Hollywood, because Tom Conway was a fairly
- 32:44well known actor who we've heard previously in Sherlock Holmes. All right, well,
- 32:49now we turned to listener comments and feedback. First of all, we
- 32:52had some pretty good feedback on the first episode of Murder and Mister Malone featuring
