- 0:00Alright, let's go! You're listening to Kathie's Coaching Podcast.
- 0:04I'm your host, Kathie Owen.
- 0:06On this channel, we talk all things corporate wellness, fitness, and some reality transurfing.
- 0:13And today, we're talking corporate wellness on steroids.
- 0:19Okay, so we are going to talk today about Top Workplace Wellness, why I created this program, what it's for, and all that.
- 0:28But today, I'm wearing a A jersey, because at OCuSOFT we're doing Beat the Heat Summer.
- 0:36And the theme is, today, it's wear your favorite jersey.
- 0:40Y'all know, I love my Astros.
- 0:43And, so, we're wearing Astros today.
- 0:47Probably should have put Rusty's Texans collar on.
- 0:51But, yeah, we're not going to do that today.
- 0:54So, top workplace wellness.
- 0:57What is this all about?
- 0:59Why did I create it?
- 1:00And what's it for?
- 1:02All that good stuff.
- 1:03So I thought, you know what, I'm just gonna record this while I'm driving to work because I have been so busy I've been unable to record.
- 1:12And I think this is more like just me.
- 1:17Me doing me.
- 1:18And I don't know about you, but I prefer to see my coaches doing their thing in their zone.
- 1:30It just works.
- 1:32So Top Workplace Wellness is for companies that want to start incorporating a wellness program for their team, why it's important, and it's You know, we want to become a top workplace, we want to motivate our team, and we want to have engagement in our programs.
- 1:57And honestly, my program is called the Employee Engagement Accelerator, because if we can get the team engaged in what we're doing, it's going to make a difference.
- 2:14We all know that obesity is on the rise.
- 2:17Four and a half people out of ten are obese in the United States.
- 2:25That's 45 percent of the population.
- 2:28We need to address it as corporate wellness professionals.
- 2:31I coach corporate wellness professionals on how to have employee engagement in the workplace.
- 2:38And that is not an easy thing.
- 2:41It's, it's easy to just go, okay, I'm going to start a corporate wellness program.
- 2:46But over the years I've found there is one thing you need to understand before you even start a program of any kind.
- 2:55And that is motivation.
- 2:57Motivation.
- 2:58Because I could sit there all day long till I'm blue in the face telling people, Yep, we need to start moving 30 minutes a day.
- 3:07And that's not going to motivate them to start moving.
- 3:12We've got to understand motivation.
- 3:14We are humans.
- 3:15We are not robots.
- 3:17We want to understand what motivates them.
- 3:19They can logically understand they need to do that.
- 3:23But as humans, we want our results quick and easy, especially in this world that we live in.
- 3:32And, oh god, just pull out in front of me.
- 3:37That makes so much sense.
- 3:39But we want to understand what motivates our team.
- 3:42And did a video recently on motivation of the different generations.
- 3:48Because each generation has a different motivator.
- 3:51And what is that is going to determine whether your program works or not.
- 3:56So we start my coaching with assessments.
- 4:00And easy assessments to understand what the team may want, what they don't want, what works, what doesn't work.
- 4:08Actually, the very first assessment comes with you.
- 4:12As the coach, as the wellness director, you need to understand yourself as a coach and how you represent yourself as a coach in the workplace.
- 4:25As a wellness director that you partake in things that the team is doing and you put your face out there and you get out there and you make an impression and you influence.
- 4:38Influence is big and it's something that I've studied and I'm going to put a couple of books down in the description and show notes on influence and what that entails for your team.
- 4:50And what that entails for you as a person, you, you want to pay attention to how you're influencing others.
- 4:58Because that's part of the motivation factor.
- 5:02And then we move into assessments and understand what motivates the team.
- 5:06We also move into rewards and how the rewards can work for you to help you motivate people too.
- 5:18Move, get movement in, or take time for mindfulness, and other things like that, and take time for charities, or community service, whatever that may be.
- 5:30It just helps you be more balanced and rounded as a human being an individual.
- 5:36Then we move into physical exercise, which is probably my favorite and my expertise because I've been a personal trainer for now.
- 5:47I've been a personal trainer for 25 years, so I've been doing this a long time.
- 5:53And as a personal trainer, you do continuing education every two years to keep your certification up to date, and fitness is an ever changing industry.
- 6:03Motivation is an ever changing industry.
- 6:07I've also been a life coach for 20 plus years and I incorporate all of that and my degree in psychology, I incorporate all of that into what I do as a coach.
- 6:19Then we move into nutrition and diet and you can't out train a bad diet.
- 6:24Food is fuel and.
- 6:28It's missed in this world and, and I think the reason obesity is on the rise and so prominent is because we have so much good food out there and it's filled with fillers and it's, it's made to taste good but it's no, got no nutrient value and people don't pay attention to that, to how that food makes them feel.
- 6:55And that's not helpful.
- 6:57You know, that's important to understand what food does to you, to understand the food labels, how much sugar you're intaking, how much processed foods you're taking, and also to be mindful of that, be mindful of what you're putting into your body is so helpful.
- 7:20and so beneficial.
- 7:22Let's move to the next part of physical burnout or physical health of teams and that is sleep and recovery.
- 7:32And I combine these two together because they're the same thing pretty much and people don't prioritize their sleep.
- 7:40as much as they should.
- 7:42And should is a dirty word.
- 7:44I'm going to just say that right there.
- 7:46But when you prioritize your sleep, you're going to feel better.
- 7:50You're going to recover from a stressful day a lot better.
- 7:54And it's just something that's very helpful to your health and burnout and all that good stuff.
- 8:01So the first thing I coach is Engagement of your team, which is assessments.
- 8:07Because you want to know what your team wants in the first place, then we go into health fairs.
- 8:13Health fairs are a big deal.
- 8:16I'm just telling you, those things will change your workplace.
- 8:22As a corporate wellness professional or even a human resources director, if you hold a health fair, Health fair for your team in the right way, of course, but if you hold a health fair for your team, it's going to change your impression of you as the employee because it, that like quantum leaped my job as a corporate wellness professional because I just ran a gym.
- 8:47That's all I did.
- 8:48I was run a gym and health fairs made a huge difference.
- 8:52in my job, and it changed everything.
- 8:56And I do a health fair once a year, and then I also do a wellness day once a month.
- 9:03And so that wellness day is like a micro health fair.
- 9:06And I have a checklist for a health fair.
- 9:10I'll have the link to that in the description and show notes below.
- 9:15But the health fairs make a huge difference in your job as a corporate wellness.
- 9:21professional.
- 9:22If you just run a gym like I used to do, that will change everything.
- 9:27Everybody will look at you differently.
- 9:30It happened in real life.
- 9:32Right Russ?
- 9:33He's so cute, right?
- 9:34He's so cute.
- 9:36Anyways, and then, so in the first part is employee engagement.
- 9:39We have assessments, we have health fairs, we have recognition and rewards of your team.
- 9:45Then we go into the next leg, which is physical burnout, physical health.
- 9:52We have exercise, we have diet and nutrition, and we have sleep and recovery.
- 9:57And then in the third leg, we have mental health.
- 10:00And mental burnout and how to prevent that.
- 10:04Okay, this will be in the bloopers.
- 10:10I'm going to have a few bloopers in this video.
- 10:13Be sure to stay to the end to watch that.
- 10:16All right.
- 10:17So we have mental health burnout and obviously we definitely need to address stress management.
- 10:24And we also talk about communication.
- 10:28We also talk about emotional intelligence.
- 10:31Those three things we cover in mental health awareness.
- 10:35And what I find a lot in companies that I work with is leadership.
- 10:42I'm just going to say this.
- 10:43The managers need to be on board with your corporate wellness program.
- 10:48And I have to say that there are managers that don't care.
- 10:54They don't care.
- 10:55Honestly, they have one foot out the door.
- 10:57They've been with the company so long that they are secure in their job.
- 11:04And they don't care.
- 11:06They just don't care.
- 11:07I've even been told by my manager, I'm sorry to call her out like this, but I'm not.
- 11:13I'm sorry, but not sorry, you know.
- 11:16She's told me that if it was up to her, I wouldn't be there.
- 11:19And that I don't do anything.
- 11:21What?
- 11:22I don't do anything?
- 11:24Part of the reason I started creating this program was because I was like, I'm, I felt so shamed in that.
- 11:34And she's lucky I have an entrepreneurial spirit because I will bust my tail for OCuSOFT and my team and not for her because she doesn't matter.
- 11:47She'll, she'll be gone in a couple of years.
- 11:49She'll be retired and we'll watch what happens when that happens.
- 11:55Don't get me wrong.
- 11:56I love this person.
- 11:58Like I love and respect my mother.
- 12:01Mean, I, I've worked at this company for 12 years and I just got over it.
- 12:06So it is what it is.
- 12:08And I'm really good at what I do despite her.
- 12:11Just put that there.
- 12:13So communication is a huge factor there and the leaders need to be on board with your wellness program to have it be successful because the managers are the ones that are going to ask the team how they're doing and be involved in their wellness and care about them because the managers that care about their team, their team is going to be a lot more productive, they're going to be successful.
- 12:39Um, more cohesive.
- 12:41They're not going to do the quiet quitting, which is a thing for real.
- 12:46And then we also have in the mental health part, we have emotional intelligence.
- 12:52One thing I see missing in the workplace is people are unaware of their emotions and how they affect other people.
- 12:59Take my boss, for example.
- 13:00I've been in her office before when somebody else on my team needed to ask her a question and I was talking to her and then when I got done, she asked that person, what do you want?
- 13:11Just like that.
- 13:13And I'm like, Hold on.
- 13:16And that person just said, I just wanted to say good morning.
- 13:20Because that person was emotionally aware to understand that you can't just treat somebody like that.
- 13:27It was so rude.
- 13:28And then we need to be aware of how we're treating other people.
- 13:33And emotional intelligence has a lot to do with that.
- 13:36When you are emotionally intelligent, you understand, hey, I'm responsible for this team.
- 13:44I will be available for them emotionally when they ask me a question or when they're in my office.
- 13:52If they're in my office, they need something.
- 13:54It's not like they just want to say good morning when you're not emotionally aware.
- 13:59You don't get that.
- 14:00So, that's that.
- 14:03Anyways, this video is going to be chopped up and edited because I talked a lot about silly stuff.
- 14:09That doesn't matter, but I'm practicing and I'm getting a video out.
- 14:15Which I'm going to start doing a lot more of.
- 14:19I'm going to start doing a lot more of that.
- 14:21I'm going to start showcasing what I do and how I do it.
- 14:25And why I do what I do.
- 14:27Now you understand.
- 14:28I had a leader who didn't care about me, but I am successful despite her.
- 14:40And not to be ugly, I'm not shaming or condemning her either, because I'm used to people doubting me.
- 14:48And when you doubt me, my mom used to tell me, tell Kathie she can't do something, she'll do it.
- 14:57And that really, if you want me to do something, just tell me I can't.
- 15:02So we're at work now.
- 15:07This is Rusty's favorite thing to do.
- 15:12He loves coming to work every day.
- 15:19He comes to work with a smile on his face and it's his favorite thing.
- 15:27I can't leave him at home.
- 15:29Like when I go to the gym in the morning, if I've left him at home, he's very upset.
- 15:36He sits at the window and waits for me to come home.
- 15:39So if I don't take him to work, he's really upset.
- 15:43So in conclusion, let me just say this about the course that I'm teaching, I'm just starting with the small steps, which is the very first part of my course and coaching.
- 15:55And that is, I'm starting with assessments and health fairs.
- 15:59Those two things I'm going to coach and I'm opening the doors to that in September.
- 16:05I will have a link to that in the show notes and description below.
- 16:08At the very bottom of the triangle in this course is employee engagement.
- 16:16How do we get that?
- 16:17How do we know what the team wants?
- 16:20We do assessments.
- 16:21We don't just do assessments for the team, we also assess our own.
- 16:26Self and understand what motivates us.
- 16:29Understand motivation.
- 16:30Motivation is a big, big component of corporate wellness.
- 16:35It really is.
- 16:36Because otherwise people aren't going to get involved and you got to understand what motivates them, what doesn't motivate them.
- 16:42And then we go into rewards and recognition and this is in my main course and it's not in the small step program.
- 16:49But understanding the rewards and recognition of your team and what motivates them.
- 16:54It's going to make a big difference in your culture.
- 16:58That's what you want to understand.
- 16:59Your culture of your team, alright?
- 17:02And then we go into the physical burnout, physical health of the team.
- 17:09We go into exercise, which is my specialty, my forte.
- 17:13Exercise and movement.
- 17:16Um, I even teach how to redesign a gym and how to fix that up and what I did with the gym and fitness center at OCuSOFT.
- 17:26We talk about diet and nutrition for the team.
- 17:29We also talk about sleep and recovery for the team.
- 17:32We go into mental health and we talk about communication, effective communication with your team.
- 17:38We go into stress management.
- 17:42Who can't use some stress management.
- 17:46And then I coach on emotional intelligence and emotional awareness.
- 17:50And that right there will be a top workplace wellness program that engages, energizes, and excels your team.
- 18:03Who's about that?
- 18:06All right.
- 18:06That's my episode for today.
- 18:07I trust that you found it helpful.
- 18:09If you know somebody who can benefit from this, please share it with them.
- 18:13And until next time, I will see you next time.
- 18:16Peace out and Namaste.
- 18:17See ya.
- 18:20This will be in the bloopers.
- 18:22I'm going to have a few bloopers in this video.
- 18:26Be sure to stay to the end to watch that.
- 18:28All right.
