- 0:57program is your questions, my answers Part 2.
- 1:00And if you miss Part 1, make sure you go and watch it first
- 1:03because it there's kind of leads into this because I am going to
- 1:06tell you one right off the bat here and this one came from at
- 1:10game Sergeant 333333333. Do you ever forget words mid
- 1:16sentence? The answer to that is you catch
- 1:23it anyway. Yes, of course I do.
- 1:25I do it all the time. In fact, sometimes I forget
- 1:27words mid video, which makes editing very fun.
- 1:30But I've decided not even to edit them out.
- 1:32So if you're a a regular, you'll know there's a lot of times I
- 1:35kind of lose it mid sense. I even forget the name of the
- 1:38podcast sometimes. But you know, one time I was
- 1:41telling Carmen a story and I forgot the word ladder, right?
- 1:44So I'm standing there, you know, the tall climbing thing that
- 1:48steps that aren't stairs, but you climb whatever.
- 1:50And she looked at me and said, like, you mean the ladder?
- 1:52And I'm like, of course, you know, we both cracked up because
- 1:56what helps me is slowing down and sometimes even just laughing
- 2:00at myself because you know what, Everyone forgets words.
- 2:03Parkinson's just makes it happen to me more often, right?
- 2:06Everybody does it. Everybody forgets it.
- 2:09But with Parkinson's, it happens a heck of a lot more.
- 2:12And a lot of times again, I just, I, when I slow it down, I
- 2:15actually stop talking like I literally like, and I start my
- 2:20sentence again. And I do that in, in real life,
- 2:23in real time. And, you know, those around me
- 2:25get it. And if they don't get it, then I
- 2:28don't care. You know, it's the, they're the,
- 2:30they're the ones who I hope I forget their name, right.
- 2:33But anyway, as always, I'll give you a bright season for that one
- 2:36with Parkinson's when the words disappear, laughter is the best
- 2:40dictionary. All right, Next up, this one is
- 2:45from Ronald P72. And the question is, do you
- 2:49still drive? And I thank you for your
- 2:51question, Ronald. And that's a tough one because,
- 2:53you know, it's a real tough one. Yes, I still drive, but more
- 2:56carefully than I used to. You know, I avoid night driving
- 2:59and I'm more aware of fatigue now.
- 3:01For me, the best shift has been in confidence.
- 3:04I've had to ask myself honestly, am I safe or am I being
- 3:07stubborn? OK, and here's the truth.
- 3:09Giving up driving one day, it's going to be hard, extremely
- 3:12hard. I know it, I already know it.
- 3:14But giving up safety is harder. You know, I'm not trying to live
- 3:18life to the fullest and I'm not trying to to beat this
- 3:22Parkinson's thing everyday just to get in a car accident, lose
- 3:25my life. So safety first.
- 3:28My tip is is to keep having open conversations with the doctor
- 3:31and maybe even go for a driving assessment.
- 3:34It's not about losing independence.
- 3:35It's about protecting yourself and the people around you.
- 3:39And Donald, here's that price ISM for this question for you.
- 3:41The with Parkinson's, the hardest part isn't losing the
- 3:44keys. It's finding the courage to know
- 3:46when it's time to lose them. Wow, that one, that one hits
- 3:50hard. That one, that one hits hard.
- 3:53OK, moving on. This one cracked me up.
- 3:56Right. This one just absolutely cracked
- 3:57me up. This is from Linda G89 who asked
- 4:00this. Have you ever tried to multitask
- 4:02and completely failed? Linda?
- 4:05Do you mean like every single day?
- 4:07Because Parkinson's and multitasking are like oil and
- 4:10water. You know, one time I tried to
- 4:12carry a coffee talk on the phone and open the door at the same
- 4:15time. The end result?
- 4:16Phone on the floor, coffee on my shirt and me stuck in the
- 4:19doorway. You know, I've learned to do one
- 4:21thing at a time. And if people don't like that,
- 4:23well then they're welcome to come and clean my kitchen floor
- 4:26and do my laundry and clean my shirt because that's the way it
- 4:29is. So slow down one at a time.
- 4:33You know you can't multitask, so don't even try.
- 4:35It'd just be frustrating. So instead, break your break
- 4:38everything just into one part movements and do one part at a
- 4:41time. And of course, I have Bryce's
- 4:43for that. With Parkinson's, multitasking
- 4:45turns into multi messing. With Parkinson's multitasking
- 4:51turns into multi messing. I like that one.
- 4:54I really actually really like that one.
- 4:55OK, here's 1 here and this one is from Janus.
- 4:58R74 and Janice asked, what's the most embarrassing Parkinson's
- 5:03moment you've had so far? That is a really good one,
- 5:07Janet, because there's been many, there's been a lot.
- 5:11There's been some that, you know, I can laugh at them now,
- 5:14but at the time they weren't funny and they weren't ones I
- 5:17want even want to talk about. As a matter of fact, there'd be
- 5:19a time not that long ago when someone would ask me this
- 5:22question and I'd be like it almost.
- 5:23I'd be like kind of, I'd get frustrated on the inside because
- 5:27I try not to. I don't want to remember those
- 5:28times. I don't want to be remember
- 5:29being embarrassed. But, you know, sometimes if you
- 5:32face reality and you face it head on, it makes it feel so
- 5:35much better and it makes it go a heck of a lot faster.
- 5:38Right? So, OK, let's think about this,
- 5:42Janice. For me, it was when I froze.
- 5:45I think it was when I froze in the middle of this crowded mall.
- 5:48I don't know if I told the story or not, but I couldn't move.
- 5:51People were walking around me, you know, some were giving me
- 5:54side eyes. Everybody was staring.
- 5:56I was literally and you know, when you freeze, if you're
- 5:59you've been there and if you've been in this in a position, if
- 6:02you freeze, just put freeze, put freeze in the comments for me,
- 6:06freeze. So I know I'm not alone, but I
- 6:08was standing there frozen. My brain and my head are going,
- 6:11come on, Bryce, let's go, come on, feet, let's go, come on
- 6:14legs, let's move, come on, let's go.
- 6:16And for me, the way I get out of a freeze is I actually need
- 6:19someone to prompt me. I need someone to push me, pull
- 6:21me, move my leg, move my foot. It's like when my legs decide
- 6:25they, oh, that's what we're doing now.
- 6:27OK, great. And we start moving again.
- 6:28And that's what my brains like. Oh, come on legs.
- 6:32But anyway, so people were were walking around me and I could
- 6:35feel them starting at me. What is this guy doing?
- 6:37Just sort of like like being a statue, right?
- 6:40And I, I know I was in their way.
- 6:42And the worst part though, you thought, I thought that was the
- 6:44worst part. The worst part is I heard this
- 6:47kid, this little kid was with his mom and and he reached over
- 6:51and he kind of like yanked on his mom's like sweater, like
- 6:53their arm of a sweater. And and he said, why is that man
- 6:58standing like a statue? He looks weird.
- 7:02And that really stung. I have to admit that was that
- 7:05was tough. But here's the thing that I
- 7:09learned that embarrassment only has power if I let it.
- 7:13And now when something like that happens, I try to make a joke.
- 7:17Sorry, folks, you know, I just buffering like a bad Wi-Fi
- 7:20connection. And most of the time people
- 7:22laugh and take the edge off. I think some people think I'm
- 7:25out of my mind and probably out of, you know, doing something I
- 7:29shouldn't be doing, maybe smoking something or drinking
- 7:31something I shouldn't. But most of the time they laugh
- 7:34and that's OK. That's OK with me.
- 7:36And here's a, here's a parkinism, not just for you, but
- 7:39for everyone about everything. Parkinson's OK with Parkin, with
- 7:43Parkinson's, embarrassment is, is inevitable.
- 7:47Owning it is optional. Take that one and put it in your
- 7:52pipe. And that's a wrap for Part 2.
- 7:55You know, I really hope you enjoyed the Q&A series.
- 7:57And if your question didn't make it this time, don't worry.
