- 0:51Speaker 3: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, this is Carl Lee with Let's Talk,
- 0:55Speaker 3: and it's me and the Football Queen today, Lisa Odie.
- 1:01Speaker 4: We're the only two that made it today. And Lisa
- 1:05Speaker 4: has a friend that.
- 1:06Speaker 3: She has on the phone and that we will talk to.
- 1:10Speaker 3: So Lisa, if you want to introduce and bring him in,
- 1:13Speaker 3: go right ahead.
- 1:14Speaker 5: I would love that.
- 1:15Speaker 6: Okay, So today we have a special guest and I
- 1:17Speaker 6: wanted to give a little background information on our friend.
- 1:20Speaker 6: But he's a former pitcher. Drafted in nineteen ninety one
- 1:24Speaker 6: in round seven by the Cincinnati Reds. He had a
- 1:27Speaker 6: career record of fifty seven wins fifty two losses, with
- 1:30Speaker 6: a four point four to e ra overall in his
- 1:33Speaker 6: one hundred and seventy six game career. He was also
- 1:36Speaker 6: a part of the Charleston Wheelers team during his tenure.
- 1:41Speaker 6: He's originally from Anaheim, California, and now resides in Charleston.
- 1:45Speaker 6: And here's a little something that I'm going to share,
- 1:47Speaker 6: And I hope he doesn't mind that I share it
- 1:49Speaker 6: because I found.
- 1:50Speaker 5: Out about it.
- 1:52Speaker 6: You go digging, always go digging too far, carl He
- 1:56Speaker 6: was roommates with Aaron Boone in college. Oh and so
- 2:00Speaker 6: if you if you're not aware of who he is,
- 2:02Speaker 6: he's a current baseball manager and a former player with
- 2:05Speaker 6: the New York Yankees. So, without further ado, I would
- 2:08Speaker 6: like to introduce Chris Read to the show.
- 2:10Speaker 7: Hello, Chris, Hey, how are you guys doing doing good?
- 2:14Speaker 4: Man?
- 2:15Speaker 7: So, actually I'll give you a little So Aaron was
- 2:19Speaker 7: actually we didn't we didn't play together in college. We
- 2:22Speaker 7: were we played against each other in high school and
- 2:25Speaker 7: he was at Villa Park High School. I was at
- 2:27Speaker 7: Catella and so we played on some all star teams together,
- 2:31Speaker 7: played against each other in high school. And then I
- 2:34Speaker 7: got drafted to ninety one. He went on to USC oh.
- 2:37Speaker 5: Okay, so that part was wrong.
- 2:39Speaker 7: Yeah, then he so then he was drafted by the
- 2:41Speaker 7: Reds in the third round. I think it was in
- 2:43Speaker 7: ninety three or ninety four. And then we were we
- 2:47Speaker 7: were roommates in a ball double a.
- 2:49Speaker 6: Okay, so you were roommates, not in college, Yeah, just
- 2:53Speaker 6: in college.
- 2:54Speaker 7: Okay, I still talk. I still talk to him, and
- 2:57Speaker 7: I said, we've remained friends. He's a little bit hard
- 3:00Speaker 7: to get a hold of sometimes. Now you got some
- 3:03Speaker 7: other thing, some other press were pressing issues. But yeah,
- 3:07Speaker 7: we texted, you know, at least once a month, and yeah,
- 3:10Speaker 7: still keep in contact.
- 3:11Speaker 5: That's great.
- 3:13Speaker 4: So so, Chris.
- 3:14Speaker 3: One of the one of the things that I have
- 3:18Speaker 3: I think that I find intriguing about sports because have
- 3:23Speaker 3: played in the NFL and had the opportunity to be drafted.
- 3:28Speaker 3: When you got drafted, what was it like Because people
- 3:33Speaker 3: asked that question a lot of times, like what is
- 3:35Speaker 3: it like to I don't know, I'm assuming that they
- 3:39Speaker 3: give you calls.
- 3:40Speaker 4: They you know, I don't even know how they do it,
- 3:42Speaker 4: but like, what were you doing? Where were you at?
- 3:46Speaker 3: How excited were you at that point? I'm taking you
- 3:48Speaker 3: all the way back to the start.
- 3:50Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, I know. So obviously, you know, the draft
- 3:53Speaker 7: back then was you know, we didn't have uh Internet,
- 3:58Speaker 7: you know, we didn't have that. We I don't think
- 4:00Speaker 7: we had barely had cell phones at that point. Yeah.
- 4:08Speaker 7: So so I started being like looked at when I
- 4:11Speaker 7: was a junior in high school. So I I had,
- 4:14Speaker 7: you know, spoken to all of the major league teams.
- 4:17Speaker 7: They watched me pitch, they kind of followed me, and
- 4:21Speaker 7: it was funny. The only team that I did not
- 4:24Speaker 7: speak to my senior year was the Cincinnati Ritz. So
- 4:29Speaker 7: I had, you know, I've spoken to all the scouts, guys,
- 4:33Speaker 7: National cross checkers would come out and watch, and you know,
- 4:35Speaker 7: I had meetings with them and they talked came into
- 4:38Speaker 7: my house and talked to my family, and you know,
- 4:42Speaker 7: I had ranges everywhere from the fourth round all the
- 4:45Speaker 7: way to being a draft and follow So I I
- 4:48Speaker 7: kind of thought, you know, I was there's three days
- 4:50Speaker 7: in the draft. It was June, second, third, and fourth.
- 4:52Speaker 7: So I kind of figured, you know, hopefully I was
- 4:55Speaker 7: going to go through the first day. And so we
- 4:57Speaker 7: had a party at my house. And I'd be honest
- 4:59Speaker 7: with you, I wasn't a big baseball guy like I
- 5:02Speaker 7: I wanted. I had a couple of college offers to
- 5:04Speaker 7: play football, and that was kind of my that was
- 5:06Speaker 7: kind of my love. So I wasn't you know, it
- 5:10Speaker 7: was of course, it was an exciting time, but that
- 5:13Speaker 7: was really kind of really what what I wanted to do.
- 5:16Speaker 7: And so we had a party of my house and uh,
- 5:20Speaker 7: they called at The draft started at like ten in
- 5:22Speaker 7: the morning, and I got a call about noon and
- 5:27Speaker 7: I got the phone and the gentleman said, Hey, this
- 5:30Speaker 7: is Larry Barton with the Cincinnati Reds. He was my
- 5:33Speaker 7: he was the scout in the area and we just
- 5:35Speaker 7: want to let you know we just draft you. And
- 5:37Speaker 7: I thought it was my buddy, and I hung up.
- 5:47Speaker 4: You hung up on a scout, I did, I did.
- 5:51Speaker 7: I thought it was I thought it was my buddy,
- 5:52Speaker 7: Eric Boyd messing with me. So I hung up and
- 5:57Speaker 7: they call. They called right back, and Larry's like, Chris, no, no, no, no, no,
- 6:02Speaker 7: He said, this is Larry. Never from you know, all
- 6:04Speaker 7: the game. I hadn't really I hadn't really talked to
- 6:08Speaker 7: the Reds and he said he, why don't you know
- 6:10Speaker 7: he drafted in the in the in the seventh round,
- 6:12Speaker 7: and uh, you know we're going to be out to
- 6:14Speaker 7: see you know, see you here real soon and negotiate
- 6:17Speaker 7: your contract and you know, get everything set to go.
- 6:20Speaker 7: So yeah, so it was kind of a funny little
- 6:25Speaker 7: a funny little thing that happened there that first day.
- 6:27Speaker 7: But yeah, obviously, you know, extremely excited and honored just
- 6:30Speaker 7: to you know, have that opportunity because it's you know,
- 6:34Speaker 7: it was it was, it was it was just really neat.
- 6:37Speaker 4: It was.
- 6:37Speaker 7: It was fun to get that call and be like,
- 6:39Speaker 7: oh my gosh, somebody actually does become worth something.
- 6:42Speaker 3: When when when was the first When was the first
- 6:45Speaker 3: moment that you actually thought about, Man, I'm going to
- 6:51Speaker 3: be playing against people that I have watched on TV, Like,
- 6:55Speaker 3: you know, like when did that come in? Because for like,
- 6:57Speaker 3: for me, it was like really kind of quick, but
- 7:00Speaker 3: it was kind of private. I never really wanted to
- 7:04Speaker 3: say that, like to anybody, but I was like, man, okay,
- 7:07Speaker 3: so I'm gonna you know, and because you're thinking you're
- 7:09Speaker 3: making it anyway, you know, there's no there's no fight
- 7:12Speaker 3: in not making it. And I'm like thinking, man, I'm
- 7:15Speaker 3: going to be playing against some of these guys and
- 7:18Speaker 3: I can't even imagine, like, you know this guy or
- 7:21Speaker 3: that guy.
- 7:22Speaker 4: You know, did you go through that process as well?
- 7:26Speaker 7: Well, yeah, you know, it really hit I mean again,
- 7:28Speaker 7: it was it was kind of that whirlwind there for
- 7:31Speaker 7: that first day. And then they came out a day
- 7:34Speaker 7: later and it was the National cross Checker who was
- 7:36Speaker 7: Julian Mock at the time, and Larry and then Larry's
- 7:40Speaker 7: sudden was also a scouting and Jeff and they all
- 7:43Speaker 7: three came out to my house and it was at
- 7:45Speaker 7: that point when they like laid all this stuff out
- 7:47Speaker 7: on the table and you know, the headings on all
- 7:50Speaker 7: the papers sitting down your red uh, you know, a congratulation,
- 7:55Speaker 7: you know, a letter for Marge shot whether you what
- 7:59Speaker 7: you think of her.
- 8:00Speaker 6: You know.
- 8:02Speaker 7: So I think that's kind of when it really hit me,
- 8:05Speaker 7: because you know, growing up, I wasn't again, I wasn't
- 8:07Speaker 7: a huge baseball guy. Like I played baseball just because
- 8:10Speaker 7: it was fun and I enjoyed it and I've had
- 8:14Speaker 7: a good time being out there with my buddies, so
- 8:17Speaker 7: I wasn't like a kid that avidly watched baseball every
- 8:20Speaker 7: night on TV and went to five hundred Angel games.
- 8:24Speaker 8: You know.
- 8:24Speaker 7: I just it just wasn't a huge part of my life.
- 8:27Speaker 7: So I didn't really know a whole lot about like
- 8:32Speaker 7: a lot. I mean, you knew the big names, right,
- 8:33Speaker 7: the Ken Griffis and and then I again when I
- 8:37Speaker 7: saw that stuff on the table and I'm like and
- 8:39Speaker 7: then they brought out my contract. I think that's kind
- 8:42Speaker 7: of when it hit and I was like, oh man,
- 8:44Speaker 7: this is real. I don't know a lot about the
- 8:48Speaker 7: Cincinnati red but I mean.
- 8:50Speaker 5: You're about to find out that I heard.
- 8:53Speaker 7: Them guy guy played for them called Pete Rose I
- 8:57Speaker 7: think bitchy. But yeah, that was probably the first time
- 9:02Speaker 7: it really hit me, is when I when you know,
- 9:04Speaker 7: they were there and I got to see you know
- 9:06Speaker 7: everything you know that was that was Cincinnati Reds, and
- 9:09Speaker 7: they started talking about the money piece and all their stuff,
- 9:11Speaker 7: and it was like, wow, this is really. I was
- 9:14Speaker 7: seventeen at the time.
- 9:15Speaker 5: That's crazy, you're a baby.
- 9:17Speaker 7: Yeah, my parents both sided my first contract. If it
- 9:20Speaker 7: wasn't eighteen years old.
- 9:21Speaker 5: Ye oh wow, oh that amazing.
- 9:24Speaker 6: Hey, hey, listen, Chris, I was. I was reading some
- 9:26Speaker 6: of the bio that you had sent me earlier, and
- 9:29Speaker 6: I know that you participated in at least five big
- 9:34Speaker 6: league spring training camps.
- 9:36Speaker 5: So so walk us through that. What was that like
- 9:39Speaker 5: for you?
- 9:40Speaker 7: Yeah, so that's so, you know, like we were in
- 9:42Speaker 7: plant City at the time. That's where our spring training
- 9:45Speaker 7: contracts was, and you got you know, you have the
- 9:47Speaker 7: big clubhouse and on the left hand side of the
- 9:49Speaker 7: minor league guys, and then you got the offices in
- 9:51Speaker 7: the middle and you got the big league clubhouse on
- 9:54Speaker 7: the other side. So, you know, my first couple of years,
- 9:56Speaker 7: I went to to minor league camp and that starts
- 9:59Speaker 7: a little bit later. You know, the big guys usually
- 10:02Speaker 7: get there, you know, mid February. Minor league camp doesn't
- 10:05Speaker 7: start until first week in March typically, And so that's
- 10:10Speaker 7: my first couple of years. I think my first big
- 10:12Speaker 7: league spring training was ninety five. So that was really
- 10:16Speaker 7: that was really cool because I got to go down
- 10:17Speaker 7: there early, obviously overwhelmed my Jose Rijo's in there and
- 10:21Speaker 7: very lark and you know these guys are all you know,
- 10:25Speaker 7: the Don Gullett, I mean, all these you know, the
- 10:28Speaker 7: name George Foster and all these guys you see in
- 10:30Speaker 7: the clubhouse and you're like, oh my gosh. So that
- 10:33Speaker 7: that was that was that was a real eye opening
- 10:36Speaker 7: experience for that that first big league camp, I think
- 10:39Speaker 7: I only lasted about two weeks and they sent me
- 10:42Speaker 7: back down. They'd seen enough like that, you're not going
- 10:48Speaker 7: to be a part of the Cincinnati Reads this year,
- 10:51Speaker 7: but you know, well we'll keep you up. But anyway,
- 10:55Speaker 7: so yeah, so did that and then I was invited
- 10:58Speaker 7: the next four years and I stayed a little bit
- 11:01Speaker 7: longer every time. But you know, it just comes down
- 11:05Speaker 7: to it, Uh yeah, I just wasn't good enough to maintain.
- 11:09Speaker 6: Yeah, to get to that level and maintain and it's
- 11:12Speaker 6: that's that's got to be difficult.
- 11:13Speaker 3: But but but I think, but I think though in baseball,
- 11:18Speaker 3: like I think it's it's more challenging too, because there's
- 11:24Speaker 3: so many skill sets that you have to have. Like
- 11:27Speaker 3: you know, in football, you know, if you can tackle,
- 11:29Speaker 3: if you can throw, if you can do this, you
- 11:32Speaker 3: you kind of got a good shot. I think baseball,
- 11:36Speaker 3: you you have like a ton of different things that
- 11:39Speaker 3: you actually have to do and and and I think
- 11:43Speaker 3: that to me is is the huge challenge, what was
- 11:46Speaker 3: your what was your best skill set? What do you
- 11:48Speaker 3: think was your best skill set when it came down
- 11:50Speaker 3: to to baseball?
- 11:52Speaker 4: And and why, you.
- 11:55Speaker 7: Know, I just I mean, I'm just I'm a poor loser.
- 12:00Speaker 2: I don't.
- 12:02Speaker 7: Guest. I don't care if it's darts with my you know,
- 12:08Speaker 7: ten year old son. You know, I'm spiking the ball
- 12:12Speaker 7: when I beat him. So yeah, I'm I think just
- 12:16Speaker 7: being just over the top competitive. Always, always was just
- 12:21Speaker 7: trying to get better. I didn't have like the most
- 12:23Speaker 7: talent obviously out there, but just you know, like you said,
- 12:27Speaker 7: just try to do the little things make you stand out,
- 12:30Speaker 7: you know, just work hard, you know, on and off
- 12:34Speaker 7: the field. Just in the weight room, first in the morning,
- 12:38Speaker 7: last one out. Just show them that you're fully vested
- 12:42Speaker 7: in the in the process that goes a long way.
- 12:44Speaker 7: That'll carry you so far obviously, yeah, the first guy in,
- 12:48Speaker 7: the last guy out, and you're throwing eighty miles an hour,
- 12:50Speaker 7: probably not going to be around for a long but yeah,
- 12:53Speaker 7: work ethic. And I just think that, like I said,
- 12:55Speaker 7: the overall competitiveness of what I do, and I carry
- 12:58Speaker 7: it over today into my work life. I just I
- 13:01Speaker 7: just want to be I mean, I want to be
- 13:02Speaker 7: the best. What what what I what I'm doing and
- 13:04Speaker 7: it doesn't matter what it is.
- 13:06Speaker 4: See and and one of the things.
- 13:08Speaker 3: That I it drives me crazy is is that like
- 13:13Speaker 3: people who are in sports, people who have played it
- 13:16Speaker 3: at a high level, had opportunities to play it at
- 13:20Speaker 3: a high level, when when you talk to them, you
- 13:24Speaker 3: hear the same thing, you know, like this commitment and
- 13:27Speaker 3: this work ethic and and and I'm just I just
- 13:33Speaker 3: have a feeling that I don't see that today in
- 13:38Speaker 3: some of the athletes who want to be great.
- 13:41Speaker 4: You can you can you can tell.
- 13:44Speaker 3: They want to be this, this, this player, They want
- 13:46Speaker 3: to be this, they want to get a D one scholarship,
- 13:49Speaker 3: they want to get to the pros, they want to
- 13:50Speaker 3: do all these kind of things. But they're they're at
- 13:54Speaker 3: practice playing the game. At practice playing the game. There's
- 14:01Speaker 3: no off season that they're putting in time, their own time,
- 14:05Speaker 3: their own commitment into being whatever that is, football, basketball, baseball, track,
- 14:09Speaker 3: whatever that is, a business person, whatever that is. You've
- 14:14Speaker 3: gotta there's got to be a place in there where
- 14:17Speaker 3: there is that you have to be extra. You have
- 14:20Speaker 3: to put that extra in.
- 14:22Speaker 7: I agree, and I think the times that have changed
- 14:25Speaker 7: now is you know, when back when I was growing
- 14:28Speaker 7: up and going through you know, little league, high school whatever,
- 14:32Speaker 7: you know, we had we had seasons. So I didn't
- 14:34Speaker 7: put all man and went back.
- 14:35Speaker 8: I didn't.
- 14:35Speaker 7: I didn't just play baseball, you know, I played football.
- 14:38Speaker 7: I played baseball. I had downtime when I could just
- 14:40Speaker 7: go outside and play you know, basketball and the driveway
- 14:43Speaker 7: with my friends. And I think that's the big difference too,
- 14:46Speaker 7: is I think a lot of these kids nowadays, obviously
- 14:49Speaker 7: all the travel ball and they're playing year round, and
- 14:52Speaker 7: I think it's too much. There's it's just it's too much.
- 14:54Speaker 7: Like I said, I think kids get burnt out. And
- 14:57Speaker 7: I always say this. I think the bigges problem with
- 15:00Speaker 7: professional baseball was when they started publishing the bonus numbers, right,
- 15:07Speaker 7: so it's it's not always the kid, but when mom
- 15:09Speaker 7: and dad see that so and so out of high
- 15:11Speaker 7: school signed for nine million dollars and a big league contract,
- 15:15Speaker 7: I think there's a lot of pressure from the you know,
- 15:19Speaker 7: from the parents to push these kids to something that
- 15:22Speaker 7: you know, they may want the other interests. They're gonna
- 15:25Speaker 7: get burned out, like I've seen it, and I'll coach
- 15:27Speaker 7: my kids, you know, little league team, and even at
- 15:30Speaker 7: ten eleven years old, some of these kids they don't
- 15:33Speaker 7: want to be out there, but it's because their parents
- 15:35Speaker 7: and they've got them doing pitching lessons and hitting lessons
- 15:37Speaker 7: and all of this other stuff for kids that are like,
- 15:40Speaker 7: you know, the world needs tu but players too, And
- 15:43Speaker 7: that's the reality of it, right, And I think I
- 15:47Speaker 7: think a lot of it today again stems from the parent.
- 15:52Speaker 7: The parent piece of it, just push, push, push, push push,
- 15:55Speaker 7: and then as soon as these kids get old enough
- 15:58Speaker 7: to make their own decisions, they're like, I don't want
- 16:00Speaker 7: to do this anymore. So I think it's there's a
- 16:02Speaker 7: there's a very fine line between you know, kids. I
- 16:06Speaker 7: think every kid that you go out in the little
- 16:08Speaker 7: league fields if they want to be a major league
- 16:09Speaker 7: baseball player. But that's just not reality, you know. Like
- 16:13Speaker 7: I said, it's not and again I think you said
- 16:16Speaker 7: it perfectly. It's not always just the talent piece of it.
- 16:18Speaker 7: It's just the commitment piece of it. But I think
- 16:21Speaker 7: because they're getting so much of it early on, that
- 16:25Speaker 7: they just lose that commitment piece because they're just burned out.
- 16:29Speaker 7: I heard of doing it too.
- 16:30Speaker 4: Much.
- 16:30Speaker 3: And and I know, I go back and I and
- 16:33Speaker 3: I look at the work that I put in. If
- 16:37Speaker 3: you go back and you look at the work that
- 16:39Speaker 3: you put in. I don't know if you played travel
- 16:43Speaker 3: baseball or any of that kind of stuff, but a
- 16:45Speaker 3: lot of times you were spending time on your own.
- 16:48Speaker 3: You were running, you were lifting, you were trying to
- 16:50Speaker 3: get stronger, you were trying to get faster, you were
- 16:52Speaker 3: trying to just do all these kind of things.
- 16:55Speaker 4: Yeah, on your own.
- 16:57Speaker 3: That that that benefited you going where I think now,
- 17:02Speaker 3: I think they think more games is better, you know.
- 17:05Speaker 3: And I think that that goes for the travel all
- 17:08Speaker 3: the travel sports.
- 17:08Speaker 4: I think they.
- 17:09Speaker 3: Believe that if we play six games more, that's gonna
- 17:15Speaker 3: give you experience.
- 17:15Speaker 4: You don't get experience playing the game. You get, you know,
- 17:20Speaker 4: the experience that.
- 17:21Speaker 3: You need to to be able to play at the
- 17:25Speaker 3: next level is you need to be in shape, you
- 17:27Speaker 3: need to be strong, you need to do.
- 17:28Speaker 4: All those kind of things.
- 17:30Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think that we're stuck in You know,
- 17:34Speaker 3: somebody scored forty points you know, on a on a
- 17:37Speaker 3: on a travel game against a team that's supposed to
- 17:39Speaker 3: be the number one team in the country. We want
- 17:43Speaker 3: to we want to celebrate him and think he's gonna
- 17:46Speaker 3: do something, and that's not a guarantee.
- 17:49Speaker 7: Yeah, absolutely, I think you know, in sports in general now,
- 17:52Speaker 7: you know, professional baseball, you know, six months, seven months,
- 17:56Speaker 7: and if you play on the West Coast for the
- 17:57Speaker 7: Yankee or the Dodgers, the Yankees just even a little
- 18:00Speaker 7: bit longer usually, But it's a year round sport. I
- 18:03Speaker 7: mean it's you know, you're you're done, and you maybe
- 18:05Speaker 7: take a couple of weeks off and then like you said,
- 18:07Speaker 7: you're right back at it. You know, do a lot
- 18:09Speaker 7: of running, cardiovascular obviously being a pitcher, a lot of
- 18:13Speaker 7: cardiovascular you know, weight training, and I think that is
- 18:16Speaker 7: improved too. I mean we didn't I think I don't
- 18:18Speaker 7: remember if we had like strength and conditioning coaches went
- 18:21Speaker 7: went with with Cincinnati. I mean, Marge was too cheap
- 18:24Speaker 7: to pay for that. But the seems that actually do
- 18:32Speaker 7: think as well. You know, their strength and conditioning coaches
- 18:36Speaker 7: are are you know, having the kid that there are
- 18:38Speaker 7: top prospects, not bringing down every kid that's in their
- 18:40Speaker 7: minor league system. But again it's it's a full year
- 18:44Speaker 7: round workout and then you have all these places training facilities,
- 18:48Speaker 7: across the country that these that these kids go to
- 18:52Speaker 7: and and yeah, it's a it's a it's a full
- 18:54Speaker 7: time job. It's it's definitely a full time job. And
- 18:57Speaker 7: I think that's where a lot of it too falls
- 18:59Speaker 7: up part with younger kids. And again, back when we
- 19:02Speaker 7: didn't have all of those options, you were you had
- 19:07Speaker 7: to do it yourself.
- 19:07Speaker 5: It was intrinsic motivation. It had to be yeah, yeah,
- 19:11Speaker 5: it had to.
- 19:11Speaker 7: Be when and when you're eighteen or nineteen, twenty years
- 19:14Speaker 7: old and you've been playing for four or five months
- 19:17Speaker 7: and now you're home with all your buddies, you know,
- 19:20Speaker 7: there's other priorities in your life.
- 19:22Speaker 5: So at that age, you're.
- 19:23Speaker 7: Really yeah, you really have to be committed, unless you're
- 19:28Speaker 7: just some freak athlete like you know, David Wells who
- 19:32Speaker 7: looked like a seventy year old You go out there
- 19:37Speaker 7: and throw after you had twenty seven beers and I.
- 19:41Speaker 5: Oh wow wow.
- 19:42Speaker 7: So yeah, there are those freak ones out there that
- 19:45Speaker 7: don't have to put in the you know, as much work.
- 19:47Speaker 7: But I think now today is even worse. I mean,
- 19:51Speaker 7: to compete today at the professional level or even at
- 19:54Speaker 7: the D one level, I mean, it's it's a lot
- 19:57Speaker 7: of work. I mean, you really have to be committed
- 19:59Speaker 7: to do.
- 20:00Speaker 5: So I'm going to go a different direction here. Chris.
- 20:02Speaker 6: So, like we said in the bio, you're from Anaheim, California,
- 20:06Speaker 6: and when you were drafted. You eventually played at two
- 20:09Speaker 6: levels in West Virginia, correct Princeton and then in Charleston
- 20:13Speaker 6: with the Wheelers. So tell us about the culture shock.
- 20:16Speaker 6: What was it like going from California and the weather
- 20:20Speaker 6: and the and the the cities, the people and coming
- 20:23Speaker 6: to West Virginia.
- 20:24Speaker 5: What was that like?
- 20:25Speaker 7: Oh my gosh, that was so. I remember I flew
- 20:29Speaker 7: out of John Wayne Airport that morning. I flew to
- 20:36Speaker 7: blue Field, Oh, West Virginia. That's where we landed, huge, huge,
- 20:45Speaker 7: and then drove to Princeton and we had an apartment
- 20:49Speaker 7: on Mercer Street behind the Harley Davidson.
- 20:52Speaker 5: Bar So got lots of sleep, crespool, peaceful.
- 20:57Speaker 7: Oh yeah, like I was my room made. My roommate
- 21:01Speaker 7: in rookie ball was one of my five because you
- 21:04Speaker 7: only made, you know, seven dollars a week play it
- 21:07Speaker 7: played in rookie ball. Uh So, we had five people
- 21:10Speaker 7: in apartment. Pokey Reefs was one of my roommates who
- 21:13Speaker 7: was the first round pick that year, played in the
- 21:15Speaker 7: big leagues for a while, has a couple of World
- 21:17Speaker 7: Series rings.
- 21:18Speaker 4: Wow.
- 21:19Speaker 7: But yeah, like that was that was. It was a
- 21:22Speaker 7: huge culture shock and then just the people it was.
- 21:25Speaker 7: You go into games and it was a different crowd
- 21:29Speaker 7: than I was used to play in California coming to
- 21:31Speaker 7: those games, but I loved it. I think it was fantastic.
- 21:35Speaker 7: It was a great experience. Princeton was a short because
- 21:39Speaker 7: it was short season rookie, so it was right after
- 21:41Speaker 7: I was drafted. I went there. I was only played
- 21:43Speaker 7: in Princeton that season was only three months, two and
- 21:47Speaker 7: a half, three months long, and then came home, went
- 21:51Speaker 7: back for spring train the next year, and then they
- 21:53Speaker 7: you know, they sent me to I went to Billings
- 21:54Speaker 7: after that, which was high rookie ball, and then the
- 21:59Speaker 7: following year I went I came to Charleston and it
- 22:03Speaker 7: was it was fantastic, Like I met seventy good people.
- 22:07Speaker 7: People again obviously still keep in contact with today and
- 22:10Speaker 7: see on a pretty normal basis, But it was, it was,
- 22:15Speaker 7: it was, It was a really it was a step up,
- 22:17Speaker 7: right like every time you get moved from you know,
- 22:20Speaker 7: low rookie ball the high rookie ball, they've all the
- 22:22Speaker 7: cities get a little bit bigger, you get treated a
- 22:26Speaker 7: little bit better, you're not eating peanut butter and jelly,
- 22:28Speaker 7: and you're still still having to ride the bus for
- 22:33Speaker 7: fifteen hours. So that was a little bit of a drawback,
- 22:36Speaker 7: But yeah, it was. It was a real culture shock
- 22:39Speaker 7: from going to where I was thinking I was going
- 22:41Speaker 7: to go play for the actual Cincinnati read I got
- 22:45Speaker 7: to go start some point.
- 22:46Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a long way.
- 22:48Speaker 3: From there, Chris, I have I have a question. I
- 22:52Speaker 3: don't have any idea of how you may answer this
- 22:56Speaker 3: or even if this is something that could be answered. Actually,
- 23:01Speaker 3: why is baseball okay? Like you said you started you
- 23:06Speaker 3: basically went in the baseball professional baseball.
- 23:12Speaker 7: At how old seventeen?
- 23:15Speaker 3: Like there's no other sport, there's no really any other
- 23:19Speaker 3: sport that actually takes because you're still a kid at
- 23:22Speaker 3: that point and you're you're trying and you're competing against
- 23:26Speaker 3: legitimately grown men.
- 23:29Speaker 4: Right, why and how is that? How does that work?
- 23:33Speaker 7: Like?
- 23:33Speaker 4: Like what do you like, what are you thinking at seventeen?
- 23:35Speaker 3: I get drafted, I'm I'm twenty one, twenty twenty one,
- 23:40Speaker 3: something like that, and so I'm I'm pretty you know,
- 23:44Speaker 3: I've gone through college and all that, so I have
- 23:47Speaker 3: an awareness of me and what's actually happening at seventeen.
- 23:52Speaker 4: Like do you really even know what the whole process
- 23:55Speaker 4: is going to take? What is like? What is that like?
- 24:00Speaker 7: Tell you it's uh, it was interesting. It was like,
- 24:04Speaker 7: you know, you go in high school and I had
- 24:05Speaker 7: a pretty successful high school career, and so you're you know,
- 24:09Speaker 7: you're the big fish and right in the little, little
- 24:11Speaker 7: little pond, and then all of a sudden, you get
- 24:14Speaker 7: to where everybody else here has been drafted or you know,
- 24:17Speaker 7: signed free agent or whatever. Now you're a minnow in
- 24:20Speaker 7: the ocean. You realize, yeah, you realize you're just not
- 24:26Speaker 7: as good as you think you are, because you know
- 24:29Speaker 7: the talent of the people you're playing against where the
- 24:32Speaker 7: all stars of they're all stars, you know, they're they're
- 24:34Speaker 7: the they were the cream of the crop from you know,
- 24:38Speaker 7: Texas or Florida, whatever it may be. So there is
- 24:41Speaker 7: a there's an eye opening effect. I'm in my first
- 24:44Speaker 7: couple of games. The balls that I throw in high
- 24:47Speaker 7: school that just drip people out. They were hitting five
- 24:50Speaker 7: hundred feet over the left field fence and I was
- 24:52Speaker 7: just didn't under in the ninth batter in the lineup,
- 24:54Speaker 7: and like, what is going on? You really have to
- 24:58Speaker 7: you really have to make a lot of an adjustment.
- 25:01Speaker 7: But you're right, you know, I play against the kids
- 25:03Speaker 7: that were out of college, but I always just kind
- 25:07Speaker 7: of text solace in my thought process was well, if
- 25:10Speaker 7: you're twenty two years old and you're still in rookie ball,
- 25:13Speaker 7: I should be able to handle you.
- 25:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:15Speaker 5: There you go. A good players like that.
- 25:17Speaker 4: Good thought.
- 25:19Speaker 6: Hey, Chris, I've got one last question and then we'll
- 25:21Speaker 6: let you go. We appreciate you being on with us tonight.
- 25:24Speaker 6: But what advice would you give to young upcoming players
- 25:29Speaker 6: that are trying to make it to the show? What
- 25:31Speaker 6: are some things that they and I love saying the show,
- 25:34Speaker 6: I feel like I'm on Bulderrham or something. You know,
- 25:37Speaker 6: I feel like I know baseball now. I feel like
- 25:39Speaker 6: I'm so knowledgeable on it. But anyway, let's go back
- 25:42Speaker 6: to the question. So what are some things that you would,
- 25:45Speaker 6: you know, tell these young players. What are some things
- 25:48Speaker 6: that they can do to if they want to, you
- 25:50Speaker 6: know level, what are some things that they should be doing?
- 25:52Speaker 4: Now?
- 25:53Speaker 7: Well, I think I said before, do you seem to
- 25:57Speaker 7: have a balance in their life. Okay, you can't because
- 26:00Speaker 7: and I'll give you a real quick little story when
- 26:02Speaker 7: I when I coach my son's little league team, ten
- 26:05Speaker 7: eleven twelve year olds, you know, I would have a
- 26:07Speaker 7: team meeting with the parents and everybody, you know, the
- 26:09Speaker 7: first night, and the first thing I would say is,
- 26:11Speaker 7: you know, you have a five twenty nine plan, because
- 26:14Speaker 7: you know, the chance of your your kid playing college
- 26:17Speaker 7: baseball is not real high. And that's your chance of
- 26:21Speaker 7: your your child playing professional baseball is probably, you know,
- 26:25Speaker 7: substantially less than that. So you know, let's put things
- 26:29Speaker 7: in perspective. If you're talented enough to play at a
- 26:33Speaker 7: higher level, they'll find you. I don't care if you
- 26:35Speaker 7: live in Princeton, West Virginia, or you know wherever. If
- 26:39Speaker 7: you're the cream rises to the top. So I think kids,
- 26:43Speaker 7: especially in West Virginia, you know, they always see it
- 26:45Speaker 7: as the disadvantage because they come from such a small town.
- 26:48Speaker 7: But I tell you what, doesn't take a lot to
- 26:49Speaker 7: get noticed when you're in a smaller town because they're
- 26:51Speaker 7: scouts everywhere. There's scout every game that you don't even
- 26:54Speaker 7: know about it, especially there no go ahead.
- 26:57Speaker 5: I'm sorry.
- 26:57Speaker 6: I was just gonna say it, especially in this day
- 26:59Speaker 6: and age of social media. I mean, you know, you
- 27:01Speaker 6: don't have to be there in person to discover the
- 27:04Speaker 6: talent anymore.
- 27:05Speaker 5: It's not like that.
- 27:06Speaker 7: And they might not even be there to see you, right,
- 27:08Speaker 7: they might be looking at one of your teammate or
- 27:10Speaker 7: whatever it may be. So I said, just you know,
- 27:13Speaker 7: but have a balanced life. You know, go play baseball,
- 27:17Speaker 7: but do other things too, Like, don't don't just solely
- 27:19Speaker 7: focus on that, because I think it's like anything else
- 27:21Speaker 7: in life is if that's all you have in your mind,
- 27:24Speaker 7: that's all you want to do, and then you know,
- 27:26Speaker 7: something doesn't happen. I mean there's obviously a huge amount
- 27:29Speaker 7: of disappointment that comes with that, right, And just you know,
- 27:32Speaker 7: keep an open mind. And again, if you're good enough
- 27:35Speaker 7: to play at a higher level, I can watch a
- 27:39Speaker 7: kid run across the field and tell you if he's
- 27:41Speaker 7: got talent or not. Right, does it take then you
- 27:44Speaker 7: have to throw ninety five miles an hour? So just yeah,
- 27:48Speaker 7: I think just you relax, they relaxed, stay focused, like
- 27:52Speaker 7: keep saying you'll work hard, and uh, yeah, I just don't.
- 27:56Speaker 7: I don't think there's a magic potion to to playing
- 28:00Speaker 7: at a higher level in any sport. I just think it's,
- 28:03Speaker 7: you know, you gotta work hard, but again, you also
- 28:06Speaker 7: have to have other things in your life and have
- 28:09Speaker 7: a back and anything else. Absolutely, education or whatever. You
- 28:15Speaker 7: have something else in mind too, because you know it
- 28:18Speaker 7: is a hard it's a hard road.
- 28:19Speaker 5: Yeah, yes, good advice.
- 28:20Speaker 6: All right, Chris, Well, we're gonna let you go, but
- 28:22Speaker 6: we really appreciate you coming on tonight, and hopefully we'll
- 28:26Speaker 6: have you come back on in future podcasts.
- 28:29Speaker 7: That sounds great. I look forward to it. Thank you, guys.
- 28:31Speaker 3: Okay, thanks christ Now, Okay.
- 28:36Speaker 6: So, so basically he said, if you want to make
- 28:39Speaker 6: the show, don't focus on it because the odds are
- 28:43Speaker 6: probably not in your favor.
- 28:45Speaker 5: That's what it sounded like to me.
- 28:46Speaker 3: Yes, yes, and then and I hear and I hear
- 28:50Speaker 3: that as the as the path to go, right, But
- 28:56Speaker 3: I was so totally the opposite it. And I think
- 29:00Speaker 3: it's what drove my mom so crazy, because like I was,
- 29:03Speaker 3: like I didn't even want to be successful at school, right,
- 29:09Speaker 3: I wanted to I wanted only football, like I only
- 29:13Speaker 3: wanted to play football, and and I.
- 29:16Speaker 5: Mom straightened that out real quick.
- 29:18Speaker 4: She tried. She really did, she really tried.
- 29:22Speaker 5: Like she im at the grades part, Carl, I'm.
- 29:24Speaker 4: Talking about that.
- 29:28Speaker 3: I have no problem my first my first semester, my
- 29:32Speaker 3: first semester at Marshall. You know, I ended up playing
- 29:38Speaker 3: and doing pretty good, and you know, and all this
- 29:42Speaker 3: and and I'm thinking I'm on my way. You know,
- 29:44Speaker 3: this is exactly how I drew this up. To be
- 29:47Speaker 3: sure class I literally had like a one point six DP.
- 29:54Speaker 3: Oh my goodness, I get called in by that.
- 29:57Speaker 5: I would not tell people that.
- 30:00Speaker 6: I think I would have left that to myself and
- 30:02Speaker 6: iday honesty policy here.
- 30:04Speaker 3: I'm not the best I'm not the best example for
- 30:07Speaker 3: the person who is a student athlete, okay, because I
- 30:12Speaker 3: was really trying to be just the athlete.
- 30:15Speaker 4: But Sonny Randall he called me and cussed me up.
- 30:18Speaker 3: And down shore and I had he put me in
- 30:21Speaker 3: study hall, not for just the semester, not just for
- 30:25Speaker 3: that year.
- 30:25Speaker 4: Ever, but forever. I think if he was alive.
- 30:29Speaker 5: Now, yeah, we're gonna fix this.
- 30:32Speaker 4: We're gonna he's gonna have me in study hall today.
- 30:34Speaker 5: That's good. That's good.
- 30:36Speaker 4: Well, ladies, and we're gonna take a quick break and
- 30:38Speaker 4: we'll be right back. All right, cats, the kittens have

- 32:12Speaker 4: You know, right, tide Jersey can be a can be
- 32:13Speaker 4: a source subject.
- 32:14Speaker 10: Not really, This is the first time I ever seen it.
- 32:17Speaker 10: Sore I got. I don't know if you know it,
- 32:20Speaker 10: but I'm a tired man. I think every Jersey during
- 32:22Speaker 10: that played in his return, so I'm pretty familiar with this.
- 32:26Speaker 10: So it's it's never been sore.
- 32:28Speaker 4: But why do you think that? What was your message?
- 32:30Speaker 3: Like?
- 32:30Speaker 4: Maybe buff nation and buffalom. Sure, I don't have a message.
- 32:33Speaker 10: I'm praying for my ID. I love him to life.
- 32:35Speaker 10: Rick George, let's get to elephant at the rule. I
- 32:37Speaker 10: don't want to talk about this too long. I'm gonna
- 32:40Speaker 10: just talk briefly and let it go. We talking about
- 32:43Speaker 10: your door. We ain't talking about nobody else but his
- 32:47Speaker 10: last name one Sanders. We wouldn't have discovered this discussion.
- 32:50Speaker 10: The only reason we were happening this discussion is his
- 32:53Speaker 10: last name is Sanders.
- 32:56Speaker 3: Okay, so I at least are like when I when
- 33:02Speaker 3: I when I heard that, like every everything about that
- 33:09Speaker 3: came across to me wrong.
- 33:13Speaker 6: I am going to preference what you just said wrong
- 33:17Speaker 6: with contradictory. Contradictory because the way, the way that he
- 33:22Speaker 6: came across during that press conference, as my son is
- 33:27Speaker 6: being persecuted for having the Sanders name, is the same
- 33:31Speaker 6: reason that his jersey was retired in the first place. Okay,
- 33:36Speaker 6: it's because he has the Sanders name. In my opinion,
- 33:39Speaker 6: just if you look at the statistics of retired jerseys
- 33:44Speaker 6: and players that have been inducted into their school's hall
- 33:47Speaker 6: of fame and all of.
- 33:48Speaker 5: That, they've waited a while A hot minute. I get
- 33:52Speaker 5: to his point.
- 33:53Speaker 4: I can attest to a ton of players.
- 33:56Speaker 6: I'm not the one who's sitting in this room right now,
- 34:00Speaker 6: right you.
- 34:00Speaker 3: Know, yes, I mean to me I'm thinking, okay, what
- 34:06Speaker 3: did he Let's just okay, let's just be honest. When
- 34:09Speaker 3: you forget where he got drafted, he's going to be
- 34:14Speaker 3: able to prove that he's NFL caliber once he's once
- 34:18Speaker 3: he got there. The question becomes, does his statistical effort
- 34:25Speaker 3: at Colorado sound like something that.
- 34:32Speaker 4: You would put on the wall you would retire at Jersey.
- 34:36Speaker 5: Okay, Okay, so I did. I did a little research.
- 34:38Speaker 6: Imagine that little research today on some of these successes
- 34:44Speaker 6: that our friend Shador achieved when he was at Colorado
- 34:48Speaker 6: for two years Colorado Buffalo's Okay. So the obvious ones
- 34:52Speaker 6: are personal achievements, which you know, he broke and tied
- 34:56Speaker 6: numerous Colorado passing records during his tenure there. He was
- 35:00Speaker 6: Big twelve Offensive Player of the Year in twenty twenty four.
- 35:04Speaker 6: He also won the Johnny Uniteds Golden Arm Award in
- 35:06Speaker 6: twenty twenty four. In academics, unlike Carl, he maintained a
- 35:11Speaker 6: three point.
- 35:11Speaker 5: Nine the GPA.
- 35:14Speaker 6: And then finally you think about his financial successes. He
- 35:18Speaker 6: had great nil deals with the school, with Google, with Nike.
- 35:23Speaker 5: Those are some of his achievements.
- 35:24Speaker 6: Which are all what personal achievements Okay, But then when
- 35:28Speaker 6: we go to the other side of the coin, which
- 35:30Speaker 6: to me is the most important part of being a
- 35:33Speaker 6: retired jersey or part of a retired jersey ceremony or
- 35:38Speaker 6: being inducted to a school's hall of fame, is what
- 35:40Speaker 6: did you contribute to the program. And when you look
- 35:43Speaker 6: at these things, oh yeah, he revived the program to
- 35:47Speaker 6: a degree. He took them from a struggling team to
- 35:51Speaker 6: a more competitive His record overall was thirteen and twelve.
- 35:54Speaker 6: That's a little bit more than fifty percent. Okay, they
- 35:57Speaker 6: weren't part of any national championship chatter at all during
- 36:01Speaker 6: his tenure there. In fact, if you want to look
- 36:03Speaker 6: at it even closer, the bowl game that he did
- 36:06Speaker 6: go and lead the team to, they got spanked. So
- 36:09Speaker 6: when you're looking at to me, when you're looking at
- 36:12Speaker 6: retiring a jersey or giving someone the honors of, you know,
- 36:17Speaker 6: being elite at their school, you have to not look
- 36:20Speaker 6: at just personal achievements, but what they contributed to the program.
- 36:25Speaker 3: And okay, so let me let me let me clarify
- 36:28Speaker 3: just some just a piece of that. That's the team
- 36:33Speaker 3: that your team has to You have to take that
- 36:36Speaker 3: team somewhere.
- 36:37Speaker 5: You have to be a leader.
- 36:38Speaker 4: You have to be a leader. I don't know.
- 36:41Speaker 3: If I don't know, see my problem with with with
- 36:45Speaker 3: a lot of the conversation that Chador has had. Okay,
- 36:50Speaker 3: and then some of the or most of what Dion
- 36:54Speaker 3: has said. There is no there is no talk about leadership. No,
- 37:00Speaker 3: there's no talk. What we're talking about is my son.
- 37:05Speaker 3: I get that, But your your son is now part
- 37:10Speaker 3: of a team that should be everybody, it should be
- 37:16Speaker 3: the whole team. Sure, and and what is for the
- 37:19Speaker 3: what is for the what's for the betterment.
- 37:21Speaker 4: Of the the entire team?
- 37:23Speaker 5: Right?
- 37:24Speaker 4: And and I just don't I just don't see.
- 37:27Speaker 6: I think that was part of his demise in the
- 37:29Speaker 6: in the draft, to be honest, I think people saw
- 37:32Speaker 6: that especially and I think clearly the interviews that that
- 37:35Speaker 6: went on behind closed doors played a huge factor in
- 37:39Speaker 6: in you know what, he presented his leadership skills to
- 37:42Speaker 6: those owners and scouts and they didn't like what they saw.
- 37:45Speaker 3: Well, again, if if you heard that clip and you're
- 37:51Speaker 3: and you're a scout, you know what, you know.
- 37:54Speaker 4: What do you what are you thinking? And we're gonna
- 37:56Speaker 4: We're gonna play another one.
- 37:58Speaker 3: Just just just to keep this conversation going.
- 38:04Speaker 10: If that means a lot to me. I'm one of
- 38:05Speaker 10: those type of guys who I'm gonna tell you how
- 38:07Speaker 10: I feel.
- 38:08Speaker 4: Right off the rip.
- 38:09Speaker 10: You know, I'm not gonna really wait, so I give
- 38:11Speaker 10: your flowers now. I'm not gonna wait twenty years down
- 38:13Speaker 10: the street then bringing you back when you limp into
- 38:16Speaker 10: the barrier walk because some tragedy happens to recognize your
- 38:19Speaker 10: greatness and what you contributed to this program. So I'm
- 38:22Speaker 10: thankful that Rick, you know, shot a shot and moved
- 38:26Speaker 10: on on what we all know was inevitable in due time.
- 38:31Speaker 10: You know the time frame. Nobody's gonna be happy with it.
- 38:34Speaker 10: Somebody's always gonna have something to say. But the way
- 38:36Speaker 10: we are right now, we are now generation. You guys
- 38:40Speaker 10: are now people, and this is a now time and
- 38:43Speaker 10: those guys deserve what they deserve right now.
- 38:46Speaker 4: How are we in the making?
- 38:47Speaker 10: This is a new generation everything y'all.
- 38:49Speaker 4: Won't you want it right now? And you gonna get
- 38:51Speaker 4: it right now. You don't wait for nothing no more
- 38:52Speaker 4: do it. We want to go, We got over. We
- 38:56Speaker 4: want to.
- 38:56Speaker 10: Eat, but we go who we eats?
- 39:01Speaker 4: Everything we get is right now. We want something we
- 39:04Speaker 4: ordered on Amazon. We need no waiting generation, no mode.
- 39:08Speaker 4: That's over. That's a wrap on that.
- 39:10Speaker 10: Everybody in here is impatience. You download stuff right now,
- 39:13Speaker 10: putting it out as I speak.
- 39:16Speaker 3: Okay, now, I I one get the concept of everybody
- 39:26Speaker 3: wants something to happen now. But that's that's not necessarily
- 39:32Speaker 3: how to me, you don't even have to say that.
- 39:37Speaker 3: If he's earned it. Sure you know, if he's earned it,
- 39:41Speaker 3: then he wasn't in a rush for it or none
- 39:44Speaker 3: of that.
- 39:44Speaker 4: He just deserved it. But you're now trying to make.
- 39:48Speaker 3: The case that he he didn't want to wait, You
- 39:51Speaker 3: didn't want to wait, and we wanted it now. So
- 39:56Speaker 3: y'all shouldn't nobody on the outside, nobody on the inside
- 40:00Speaker 3: should be bothered by the weight.
- 40:03Speaker 4: Well, I don't know.
- 40:04Speaker 3: Anybody who has gone, he said, He said, he is
- 40:08Speaker 3: at every level, at every level, he has gone in
- 40:13Speaker 3: to the Hall of fame.
- 40:16Speaker 4: He had to wait four years at least.
- 40:19Speaker 5: He waited.
- 40:20Speaker 3: He least he had four years at least to get
- 40:23Speaker 3: into the Hall of Fame in the NFL. So you're
- 40:26Speaker 3: telling me you can wait four He couldn't wait five ten.
- 40:31Speaker 5: He didn't even wait a year.
- 40:33Speaker 4: He didn't even wait, was it was it month?
- 40:36Speaker 6: Yeah, I was gonna say it wasn't even yeah, I
- 40:38Speaker 6: wasn't even close to that. So once again, I'm going
- 40:41Speaker 6: to use contradiction as my favorite description of this little
- 40:46Speaker 6: clip that we listened to as well. I mean, to me,
- 40:49Speaker 6: it just blows my mind that as a college football coach,
- 40:53Speaker 6: you are putting out there the concept of instant gratification
- 40:58Speaker 6: as being right the the the one thing that these
- 41:02Speaker 6: players need. To me, that is a total opposite of
- 41:06Speaker 6: what a college football coach should be presenting to his future,
- 41:12Speaker 6: his team, his.
- 41:13Speaker 5: Club is future players.
- 41:14Speaker 6: We all know football is all about putting in the work,
- 41:17Speaker 6: putting in the time, yes, putting in the effort. It's
- 41:22Speaker 6: not something that just instantly happens overnight. So why does
- 41:27Speaker 6: he think that for Shador that he deserves this, this
- 41:32Speaker 6: no waiting you know now generation all of those things.
- 41:37Speaker 6: To me, sounds like he's covering up for the fact
- 41:40Speaker 6: that his son really didn't need to be his his
- 41:45Speaker 6: jersey didn't need to be retired this quickly without proving
- 41:49Speaker 6: himself further.
- 41:50Speaker 3: I see, I'm I see it like he's using he's
- 41:55Speaker 3: making the case that nobody wants to wait, so.
- 42:02Speaker 4: He was going to be in there at some point
- 42:04Speaker 4: in time.
- 42:04Speaker 5: Do you think that for sure?
- 42:06Speaker 4: No?
- 42:07Speaker 6: Okay, that's my point that I'm trying to make, not really,
- 42:11Speaker 6: And that's why he didn't wait because he knew that
- 42:13Speaker 6: if they waited that it may not happen.
- 42:15Speaker 4: Because what happens is if he leaves.
- 42:17Speaker 3: If Dion were to leave, yes, and this season had passed,
- 42:23Speaker 3: I don't think he ever.
- 42:25Speaker 6: Gets it right, especially if he's not successful at the
- 42:28Speaker 6: next level.
- 42:29Speaker 4: With Dion being there then of course.
- 42:33Speaker 3: But my problem with that is and I and I
- 42:37Speaker 3: do think that they're they're having this issue already of
- 42:41Speaker 3: former Colorado players who were who have stats, who have
- 42:48Speaker 3: reasons why they should be in the Hall of Fame.
- 42:53Speaker 4: They were patiently waiting on their turn.
- 42:56Speaker 6: That's why the ad is the one he said he was,
- 43:00Speaker 6: because he's the one catching all the calls.
- 43:02Speaker 3: You know, there's no question he's dealing with the fallout
- 43:06Speaker 3: and and.
- 43:07Speaker 4: Let's just be let'sten, you know.
- 43:09Speaker 3: And again for any listener who's saying that, Okay, this
- 43:14Speaker 3: could have been a black white thing, this could have
- 43:17Speaker 3: been this whole issue is just because it's Dion again,
- 43:23Speaker 3: you're right, it is Dion, Because Dion is the one.
- 43:27Speaker 11: Who's doing all the talking exactly, and he's he he
- 43:30Speaker 11: talked himself into something right there that is literally wrong.
- 43:39Speaker 3: What do you say when you're to a freshman that
- 43:41Speaker 3: comes into Colorado? Right, let me say, coach, I want
- 43:45Speaker 3: to play. I want to start right now.
- 43:47Speaker 4: Son. You got to be patient, you got to take
- 43:48Speaker 4: your time. Your time will come.
- 43:50Speaker 5: It's the complete opposite.
- 43:52Speaker 3: It's the complete opposite of everything that we know about football.
- 43:56Speaker 4: There's this zero.
- 43:59Speaker 6: And that's why to me when he when he goes
- 44:02Speaker 6: on that rant about you know, this is the now generation.
- 44:04Speaker 6: When we want something, we go to Amazon, it's almost
- 44:07Speaker 6: like he's trying to convince himself as much as he
- 44:10Speaker 6: is the press, because it's well deserved.
- 44:13Speaker 4: To me, that analogy doesn't really work. No, I'm not
- 44:18Speaker 4: in sports.
- 44:18Speaker 3: Well here's the other thing. If I don't have the money,
- 44:21Speaker 3: I don't care what's in Amazon. I can't just go
- 44:24Speaker 3: and get it. I may have to wait for the
- 44:26Speaker 3: next check, I may have to do whatever I need
- 44:28Speaker 3: to do. I might not be able to get it
- 44:30Speaker 3: for a month. The catch to me is can you
- 44:34Speaker 3: get it? Can you work hard enough to go get it?
- 44:37Speaker 3: Sure you you can't. You can't make the case that
- 44:41Speaker 3: it's got to be here, it's got to be now,
- 44:44Speaker 3: you got to have it right now.
- 44:45Speaker 6: Right, That's that's totally off base. Whether it's it's a
- 44:49Speaker 6: double edged sword, of course, being Deon Sanders dad her son,
- 44:54Speaker 6: I mean him being your dad, because it could go
- 44:58Speaker 6: you know, it could be work in your favor or
- 45:00Speaker 6: in this case when with the draft, I feel like
- 45:02Speaker 6: it didn't work in his favor. And so you know,
- 45:06Speaker 6: I think I think Shador has a long road ahead
- 45:10Speaker 6: of him to earn that Jersey retirement. I think his
- 45:15Speaker 6: his individual achievements are they're good, but are they worthy
- 45:21Speaker 6: of what they did for him?
- 45:22Speaker 5: I'm not sure.
- 45:23Speaker 3: And and either way, there's a already you fall in
- 45:27Speaker 3: line behind a whole host soctly former players who are waiting, right.
- 45:32Speaker 5: That's that's reality.
- 45:34Speaker 3: That's the reality of it, all right. So let's let's
- 45:36Speaker 3: get the last clip.
- 45:39Speaker 12: Jason. At that point, I have a feeling that that
- 45:42Speaker 12: A d. George He's gonna put a pair of sunglasses
- 45:45Speaker 12: up there in that ring of honor and just called
- 45:48Speaker 12: coach Prime gonna give him. Jason, I have a question,
- 45:51Speaker 12: do you have that much of an issue with Travis
- 45:53Speaker 12: Hunter having his jersey or attackers ball will give a
- 45:57Speaker 12: Heisman Trophy winner something.
- 46:00Speaker 13: Rashan Salom waited twenty three years.
- 46:05Speaker 4: He won the Heisman.
- 46:07Speaker 13: He rushed for two thousand yards and you know, some
- 46:09Speaker 13: incredible season, Travis Hunter was going to be in their
- 46:14Speaker 13: Ring of honor and get his number retired. I would
- 46:18Speaker 13: have waited, and they've Look they've diminished Travis Hunter by
- 46:24Speaker 13: attaching him to Shadure. That's overshadowed the kid that actually
- 46:30Speaker 13: was the Heisman Trophy winner. The fact that he piggybacked
- 46:33Speaker 13: Shadu off of Travis Hunter because Okay, put Travis in
- 46:37Speaker 13: this year, put Shadur in next year. He can't do
- 46:40Speaker 13: it because Shadur can't stand on his own two feet
- 46:43Speaker 13: and justify that decision.
- 46:48Speaker 5: Well, I think that that spec volumes.
- 46:51Speaker 3: I think so too. And I think the fact that
- 46:57Speaker 3: you look at the two one is a guarantee, you know,
- 47:04Speaker 3: first round pick.
- 47:09Speaker 6: Pick of the draft the draft. Yeah, I mean that
- 47:14Speaker 6: that's right there.
- 47:18Speaker 3: I really starting to it almost looks like we have
- 47:21Speaker 3: to get something over here for my son because all
- 47:27Speaker 3: this is happening with his buddy.
- 47:30Speaker 4: See, I would hate to be I would hate to.
- 47:33Speaker 3: Be on I'd hate to be the friend of in
- 47:35Speaker 3: this situation because you got to sit beside him, hear
- 47:39Speaker 3: all this craziness from him and his day. Yes, and
- 47:44Speaker 3: and I don't know how much are you patting me
- 47:49Speaker 3: on the back because.
- 47:49Speaker 4: I'm already good?
- 47:50Speaker 3: Right, you know? And then you're gonna go And then
- 47:53Speaker 3: here's the here's my thing. We're talking about the Cleveland Browns.
- 47:58Speaker 4: That's where you're going. Okay.
- 48:01Speaker 5: I love the way you preface that. Yes, we're talking
- 48:03Speaker 5: about the Browns.
- 48:04Speaker 4: That's where you're Cleveland.
- 48:06Speaker 3: Being Cleveland used to be my favorite team. I grew
- 48:09Speaker 3: up of Brown's, diehard Browns.
- 48:11Speaker 5: Anything against the Browns.
- 48:13Speaker 3: I don't have anything against them either. That they are
- 48:15Speaker 3: where they are right you are there. You don't need
- 48:20Speaker 3: to say anything one All the things that you're saying,
- 48:24Speaker 3: all these clips, the things that you're saying are making
- 48:28Speaker 3: veteran players upset. Sure they're not gonna say it, but
- 48:34Speaker 3: they're not liking they're not liking you talking about all
- 48:37Speaker 3: this kind of stuff. How great you're gonna be. You
- 48:40Speaker 3: haven't even you haven't touched an NFL field yet to
- 48:46Speaker 3: see exactly what it's like. Your Dad dominated it, but
- 48:51Speaker 3: he can't play it for you, and so you're gonna
- 48:54Speaker 3: have to go out. You're gonna have to see it.
- 48:57Speaker 3: And I can tell you how many times have you
- 49:00Speaker 3: seen great quarterbacks, great running backs, great guys at any
- 49:06Speaker 3: position everybody think, oh God, she's gonna be great, goes
- 49:09Speaker 3: early in the draft and does.
- 49:11Speaker 4: What nothing right?
- 49:13Speaker 6: And those are the ones that have high expectations that
- 49:15Speaker 6: were drafted early, first second round. Yes, yes, So now
- 49:20Speaker 6: we're looking at Shador, who was almost that he was
- 49:23Speaker 6: in the last round correct basically basically yeah.
- 49:27Speaker 4: I mean he's too he's too up for me, right,
- 49:31Speaker 4: So you know.
- 49:33Speaker 3: My question is I want to see what he I
- 49:36Speaker 3: want to see what you do. Yeah, you know, because
- 49:40Speaker 3: I'm not. I don't wish him bad at all. I
- 49:43Speaker 3: wish him. I love for him to be great, but
- 49:46Speaker 3: he's gonna have to learn to because he's I don't
- 49:48Speaker 3: think he's ever going to be deon.
- 49:50Speaker 4: So he needs to shut up and just play.
- 49:53Speaker 6: And I think that same advice that you're giving to
- 49:55Speaker 6: Shador applies to Dion as well.
- 49:57Speaker 4: He's got it, Yeah, he's gonna he's start.
- 49:59Speaker 5: To let it go. He's got so let it go.
- 50:01Speaker 6: And let his son go out there and prove on
- 50:04Speaker 6: his own merits that he deserves to be there and
- 50:07Speaker 6: deserved to be drafted higher.
- 50:10Speaker 3: And you're one hundred percent right. And I'll say this
- 50:15Speaker 3: so and and and you can close this out. But
- 50:20Speaker 3: this is something that I think I see more of
- 50:23Speaker 3: in sports now, parents being you know, involved.
- 50:26Speaker 4: And I am wondering if.
- 50:32Speaker 3: Dion's active aggressive being part of his son's career, does
- 50:41Speaker 3: that tempt does that encourage parents today to do to
- 50:47Speaker 3: attempt to do the same thing. And I think that
- 50:51Speaker 3: I think that's that's showing us something wrong.
- 50:54Speaker 5: Right.
- 50:54Speaker 4: It's not a good exam, It's not it's not a
- 50:56Speaker 4: good example.
- 50:56Speaker 6: It's not a good example of what to do for
- 50:58Speaker 6: your for your your son or your daughter.
- 51:00Speaker 3: Old coaches are not gonna deal with you. No, they're
- 51:04Speaker 3: not gonna deal with you or your son. They'll tell
- 51:06Speaker 3: you to take your son. You and your son go
- 51:07Speaker 3: somewhere else. New school coaches may try to try to
- 51:15Speaker 3: make it, they'll try to hang in there with you
- 51:17Speaker 3: at for a little bit. But if you as a parent,
- 51:20Speaker 3: if you go too far, and you have to really
- 51:22Speaker 3: you have to pay attention to where you are and
- 51:25Speaker 3: what you're saying to the football or the head coach
- 51:28Speaker 3: of basketball, whatever that head coach is, you gotta be
- 51:31Speaker 3: careful of what.
- 51:32Speaker 4: You're saying to him.
- 51:34Speaker 3: And your son can't sit around and talk about how
- 51:38Speaker 3: great he is before he's even got on the ground.
- 51:41Speaker 6: And somebody, you know, somebody created that monster. I mean,
- 51:44Speaker 6: somebody created that personality. Yes and so, And I'm afraid
- 51:49Speaker 6: this is just a reflection of society. Like you just said,
- 51:52Speaker 6: it's not the best example we're putting out there, but
- 51:54Speaker 6: unfortunately it's what's happening. And I think the influences of
- 51:58Speaker 6: once again social media, you know, just being everything at
- 52:02Speaker 6: your fingertips, travel ball, everything immediate.
- 52:06Speaker 4: You know, immediate grati gratification.
- 52:08Speaker 3: And to his point, there's no such thing as immediate
- 52:13Speaker 3: gratification other than you celebrating your touchdown because that touchdown,
- 52:18Speaker 3: because that touchdown does not mean you're gonna win the game.
- 52:20Speaker 3: It just means you got a touchdown. We may lose
- 52:22Speaker 3: the game, so that celebration, we could we could be
- 52:26Speaker 3: losing the game. You get an interception and we still lost,
- 52:29Speaker 3: and I'm in the end zone doing a dance, celebrating
- 52:33Speaker 3: my own thing.
- 52:34Speaker 5: When we lose right.
- 52:36Speaker 6: So, and that's why we think, once again contradictory all
- 52:39Speaker 6: of this because this is all he's making it all
- 52:43Speaker 6: about a single individual, his son, rather than a team sport.
- 52:47Speaker 3: Because if you try to get everybody, what if everybody
- 52:49Speaker 3: does their own.
- 52:51Speaker 5: Thing right, it won't work.
- 52:53Speaker 4: It won't work. It won't work.
- 52:55Speaker 3: Now, ladies and gentlemen, we I tell you sports is
- 52:58Speaker 3: getting crazy and and it's just and it just bothers
- 53:02Speaker 3: me that you know, a player as great as Dion was,
- 53:07Speaker 3: he can't he doesn't see it. And everybody I think
- 53:11Speaker 3: wants the best for his son, even and the people
- 53:13Speaker 3: who don't is because of.
- 53:16Speaker 4: Dia, right.
- 53:17Speaker 6: And the one thing that's coming to my mind right
- 53:20Speaker 6: now is that quote that we had when Tennessee was
- 53:22Speaker 6: dealing with that quarterback situation. No player is bigger than
- 53:26Speaker 6: the program, and that that that has to be, that
- 53:29Speaker 6: has to be emphasized.
- 53:31Speaker 3: There's nothing about them too that are even talking about
- 53:34Speaker 3: the team.
- 53:35Speaker 5: Right, They're talking about him individual.
- 53:37Speaker 4: Just individual.
