Transcript
- 0:24Hi, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon on a
- 0:26Thursday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network back at it for the next
- 0:316 hours of Iowa based program and thank you for starting your
- 0:35afternoon with us. Trent Condon, Ken Miller, we
- 0:37will talk sports with you until 2:00.
- 0:39Here's what's coming up. We got a busy program today.
- 0:43We will start with our buddy Lee Sterling, paramountsports.com.
- 0:47Lee will join us. He was perfect last week.
- 0:50Nine in one the last two weeks, so the winners he's given us.
- 0:53That's unbelievable. Well done.
- 0:54Lee Sterling. Maybe we should we should follow
- 0:57along tail Lee a little bit because he's been on fire.
- 1:01So 9:00 and 1:00 we will talk to Lee Sterling at the bottom of
- 1:03the hour and then Matt Snyder. Did we get Matt?
- 1:06I forgot to check the guest list.
- 1:07Yep, CBSSports.com. Royal Pines on MLB.
- 1:13He will join us the latest on Major League Baseball.
- 1:15Couple of big ones tonight, 1:00 tomorrow.
- 1:17One team has punched their ticket.
- 1:19The other series continue on. So Matt Snyder at about 12:45,
- 1:24at 1:00, where you're going to. I've got a busy 1:00 hour.
- 1:28We're going to start with the head coach of the Iowa Wild.
- 1:31Gary Cronin will join us. Well, Greg Cron, a bigger
- 1:34pardon, Greg will join us for, you know, a few minutes, talk
- 1:37about what lies ahead as the Wild opening night is now 48
- 1:41hours away. They drop the puck downtown Des
- 1:43Moines, keep wanting to call it the well and old habits die
- 1:46hard. But it's not.
- 1:48It's the CC. It's the slice.
- 1:50Is that what we've called it? I, I won't.
- 1:52I'm not ours, but yeah. I I hadn't heard that one.
- 1:55I actually like it. Do you?
- 1:57I mean, what's Casey's known for?
- 1:58Pizza. You can't call it the pizza.
- 2:00No. What do you go together?
- 2:02What do? How do you get your pizza?
- 2:03Get the slice. Yeah, get the slice.
- 2:05Get the slab. I was at the Casey Center this
- 2:06weekend. We're doing what Adam Sandler,
- 2:09you went to that show went. It was excellent.
- 2:11Was it really had a great time Yeah.
- 2:13Is our anniversary happy anniversary of my life of she's
- 2:16with me for 13 years. Had a girl officially.
- 2:18She's the same terrace, the same that she is.
- 2:20So I've never. I mean, so he's a comedian, yes.
- 2:23And he sings too, right? Absolutely.
- 2:24Yep. And but you were glad you went.
- 2:26Ohh, it was excellent. Really, really enjoyed.
- 2:28And you had some, like, some belly laughs, like, Oh, yeah.
- 2:31Yeah. Really.
- 2:33Yes, I, I mean Adam Sandler movies, my era, you know,
- 2:36growing up in the 90s. I don't dislike him.
- 2:38I don't want people to think that, yeah, just don't.
- 2:41Different areas, right? Yeah, it would be like Belushi
- 2:43for you if you're still with us. You know, something like that.
- 2:46Sailor the Sandman was at the top of the list and really
- 2:48excited. That how many was it sold out?
- 2:51It was packed. Was it really Now?
- 2:53They had the curtains up for the upper level, but everything
- 2:55else, Yeah, it was full. I'll be damned.
- 2:57And a good time. Good for you.
- 2:58What time does it start 7:30? And was over by when?
- 3:03We were home by 10. Little dinner beforehand.
- 3:07Yep, stopped over to Jethro's, had herself a little grub and
- 3:10then made the short walk over to what What do you call it?
- 3:14The slice? The case?
- 3:16It's not. Me, I mean, I, I'm I'm borrowing
- 3:18that, but I thought, I thought, I thought it fit.
- 3:21Anyways, good stuff. So we will talk to Greg Cronin,
- 3:24the Iowa Wild head coach. Then we'll talk to Frank Schwab.
- 3:27We always, we've talked a lot to Frank Schwab.
- 3:29If you listen to the program, he covers the NFL for
- 3:32yahoosports.com. But this is one week in
- 3:34particular that you can count on Frank coming on because he's a
- 3:37Wisconsin grad. So with Wisconsin and I was set
- 3:40to battle each other on Saturday night, we will have Frank Schwab
- 3:44on, and then we'll go West to Stephen M Simple, his regular
- 3:47spot. We'll talk to Sip.
- 3:49They'll fly out tomorrow to Maryland to take on a pesky
- 3:53Terps team, and then Trenton will make some pics before we
- 3:57slide on out of here just before 2:00.
- 3:59So a busy program, I guess. We're going to have to do the
- 4:02chicken coop early in the show tomorrow.
- 4:04Find time tomorrow or maybe we could even double dip next week.
- 4:07But we. We have flexibility with that.
- 4:08I like that kind of things. All right, So anyways,
- 4:11yesterday, baseball, 4 series. Unbelievable drama, I thought,
- 4:15especially in the Cubs game. Especially in the Cubs game.
- 4:18That's the one that moves the needle here.
- 4:19Heck of a game. Cubs trying to cling to that 4th
- 4:244-3 lead, and by gosh, they were able to do it.
- 4:28Good pitching out of the bullpen.
- 4:30Kittridge gave up a run, but Thielbar was terrific and Kelt
- 4:33was unbelievable in his spot as he comes out, gets the final out
- 4:37of the 8th inning and then shuts them down in the 9th.
- 4:40Palencia, I like what they're. I like the way he's come back
- 4:43off his little downturn. I've spent some time down here,
- 4:47went back up and he's been fantastic.
- 4:49Pomeranz Tayon is Tayon, right? He's a, you know what?
- 4:53When it's all said and done and I don't know how it's going to
- 4:55shake out, but I'm looking more forward to next year.
- 4:58Tayon's one of those guys. He's a 3A four maybe in a
- 5:02perfect world, if you got that much talent, he's a 5.
- 5:04But he's he's a, he's a good player.
- 5:07Trent. They've got to find a spot for
- 5:08Jameson. Tayon, he was really good
- 5:10yesterday and preschool was not. No, he was not.
- 5:13And you can see maybe the environment got to him.
- 5:15We talked about and been great. A kid that grew up a Cubs fan in
- 5:19that environment felt like he got to him.
- 5:21I mean, he grew to 1 right away to Bush and and it was on from
- 5:24there and. My PCA had a big hit.
- 5:27He needed that in the worst way. No doubt.
- 5:30You couple that with their usage of the bullpen and they used
- 5:34kind of their long arms too, so it wasn't the highest leverage,
- 5:37but you got to see a couple games because it got too tight.
- 5:40Played the what pitch? 3 innings I think in that game.
- 5:42Cronid and Patrick came in again.
- 5:45So now you get a couple more looks at those guys.
- 5:47I mean, that has to be helpful at minimum.
- 5:50Is it weird? Have they announced yet?
- 5:51Because when I was looking this morning.
- 5:53Matthew Boyd and and Peralta. Is it official though?
- 5:58Well, I'm, I'm, I'm just looking at ESPN.com, right?
- 6:01Because not official. Neither of them.
- 6:03Neither of them as of this morning when I was looking, I
- 6:06don't remember what time it was. What would Murphy do?
- 6:08Merseroski? I don't think so.
- 6:11Is it more of a piece together? The thought process from the
- 6:15Milwaukee side, as I understand it is get through this game, you
- 6:19get Peralta not just for game one, potentially for three games
- 6:22pitching. I mean, this is old school,
- 6:24right? 1/4 and seven like it used to be
- 6:27for starting pitching with your ace.
- 6:28Set that up for the NLCS because regardless of who it is, you're
- 6:33going to need Freddy. Get there before that.
- 6:35You got to get there before that.
- 6:36That's the other component. So how do they feel going
- 6:38forward? That's the thought I I was
- 6:40shocked that Boyd hadn't officially been announced when I
- 6:43look, but I just don't know if you'd seen anything today if
- 6:45it's official because it's up on the apps and things like that,
- 6:48but the. Official.
- 6:50But to be fair, Colin Ray was named the starter before.
- 6:53Was it this time last week? And of course he didn't start.
- 6:56Matthew Boyd started on short rest and we know that one not
- 6:59well, right? So I mean, I guess you got to
- 7:01keep checking back to your point, Trent.
- 7:03Yes, I and with the late first pitch, eight O 8, just the six,
- 7:07are you? Surprised by that?
- 7:09It's the cups. It was the Dodgers.
- 7:12It's the Dodgers. That's very true.
- 7:14And just the. That's a one O 8 start time,
- 7:16right? The one O 8, no three O 8.
- 7:20Three O 8 here, one O 8 there. Oh, I thought it was a three
- 7:253:00 Pacific. OK, that's better then.
- 7:27But you have shadows a start time that isn't very weird.
- 7:31Yes, it is weird that they did this, but I don't know prime
- 7:35time. Get the Cubs in there, I guess
- 7:37is the thought process behind it or they just said, you know
- 7:40what, we'll give each of them a prime time game, each gets an
- 7:43afternoon game and go that direction if we get a game 4.
- 7:46So here we are. If it's Peralta, big advantage,
- 7:50Mel. I agree.
- 7:52If it's not, though, if they're trying to piece it together,
- 7:54you've seen some of these arms. They use some of their long arms
- 7:57yesterday. You know what and, and and along
- 8:00those lines, I think during the broadcast, who's ever good,
- 8:03who's ever doing that game and I don't I don't know who the play
- 8:06by play guy is. He mentioned that he thought
- 8:08Quintana was going to be today's starter.
- 8:11So maybe they are kind of going back and forth as to how they're
- 8:16going to how they're going to play this.
- 8:19That is something that would make sense, right?
- 8:21Because they had to use Cantani yesterday because Priesta was so
- 8:23bad. You have to go that direction.
- 8:26It's I will be very surprised if it's not Peralta, but I'm just
- 8:31waiting and holding on there to see if it is because the
- 8:34environment was outstanding. It was tremendous.
- 8:37That first inning was so much fun, but then he fell into the
- 8:41same old Cubs. Yeah, couldn't get a hit,
- 8:43couldn't get a hit, couldn't get a hit.
- 8:44And as it's getting tighter and tighter and it's 4/3 and who's
- 8:47going to deliver a big one? Tucker caught stealing.
- 8:50I mean, he was dead meat. Yeah, and it just didn't happen.
- 8:53Alex Faust is the name of the broadcaster, along with Ron
- 8:56Darling. OK, I mean, I love Darling.
- 8:58I listen to Darling all the time on the Mets broadcast along with
- 9:01Keith Hernandez and Gary Cohen, right?
- 9:04Yeah, Gary Cohen darling, and Keith Hernandez is up for a
- 9:08contract extension. I hope he I hope he signs
- 9:11because he's that's a really good, that's a really good trio.
- 9:13OK. This is confirmed from a
- 9:16Milwaukee I believe beat reporter.
- 9:17Yes, beat reporter on the Brewers, Adam Mckelvey.
- 9:21Freddie Peralta will start Game 4 for the Brewers.
- 9:23And does he go a step further and say who the Cubs are going
- 9:27to It is Matthew Boyd. I don't have that.
- 9:29I'd have to look at Boyd, but yeah, I have the Peralta part of
- 9:32that one and the same thing here.
- 9:34I mean, we're back to regular rest now.
- 9:35Yeah, he is. He would be.
- 9:36Yep. So I, I got to believe it's
- 9:38going to be him. And then if, if indeed the Cubs
- 9:40do advance, they will play on Saturday for that one.
- 9:44And it'll either be at night or it'll be right in the middle of
- 9:47the afternoon. So if you're a Cyclone fan or if
- 9:49you're a Hawkeye fan, you're going to have to make a
- 9:51decision. If you're a Cubs fan and want to
- 9:53see, want to see both Dave Roberts, we talked about him
- 9:58yesterday when we were talking about Pat Murphy and Dave
- 10:01Roberts. Did he do boy Kershaw?
- 10:04Did he do Kershaw dirty, bringing him out, sending him
- 10:08back out for the 8th inning? That's not dirty doing him
- 10:11dirty, that's helping your team. That's being a good teammate
- 10:14that's wearing it. No, I'm not saying that Kershaw
- 10:16didn't want to go out there, but Kershaw didn't have.
- 10:18He's not a relief pitcher, You know what I mean?
- 10:20You know what I mean? The last memory that Dodger fans
- 10:24are probably, well, maybe he'll pitch again, but I don't know.
- 10:27I don't know. It was weird, The other one that
- 10:28maybe the best part about that thing was seeing Sandy Koufax
- 10:31stand up and cheer for when Kershaw came out of the bullpen
- 10:35entrance onto the playing field. Yeah, I thought they stuck with
- 10:38him a little bit too long. But, you know, hindsight being
- 10:40what it is, you know, here's the bottom line.
- 10:42We got another game today. And as a guy that doesn't care
- 10:44who wins this series, I'm all for it because more sports is
- 10:47good for business. As it's getting out of hand,
- 10:49that's what you do. I mean, you just, you have to do
- 10:51that. That's part of being a
- 10:52professional and things aren't going well.
- 10:54So be it. You got to help your team.
- 10:57I'm not going to feel bad for Clayton Kershaw.
- 10:59No, he's he's made hundreds of millions of dollars.
- 11:00He's going to be a Hall of Favor.
- 11:02Yeah, I that's not going to be a lasting memory for me.
- 11:05A relief performance in the NLDS when they're getting blown out.
- 11:08It just kind of goes hand in hand with what I think about
- 11:11with Clayton Kershaw. He's terrible in the postseason.
- 11:13He always has been, yeah, even at his peak.
- 11:15That is the narrative that is there, and it was the same guy
- 11:19again last night. Even old him, same thing.
- 11:23Yep, decent in the 7th inning, but boy oh boy, the 8th inning.
- 11:26Got away, You're Blue Jays. Oh, we're going to get.
- 11:28To them, they moved on about that, a bullpen game.
- 11:32This is a fun team. Yeah, this is a fun team.
- 11:34Who do you want to see as a fan? You don't.
- 11:38You mean of of Seattle or Detroit?
- 11:40Right. Scuba goes in Game 5 tomorrow,
- 11:45Yeah, so they will be depleted and at best you're going to get
- 11:49only twice. Yeah, I don't know, I maybe
- 11:55Detroit, the Seattle's. There's something about this
- 11:58Seattle team. You got home field against both
- 12:03you. Do so.
- 12:04It's going through Toronto. There's no concern.
- 12:06How about this? The Tigers win yesterday was
- 12:09their first win in Comerica in over a month in.
- 12:13No, well, they were so crappy down the.
- 12:17Stretch. So I read that this morning on I
- 12:21talk about a lot, the Yahoo Daily newsletter, which is just
- 12:24a great recap of kind of everything going on.
- 12:26Second week of September. That is their first win it at
- 12:30home since September 6th. My God.
- 12:36Against the White Sox, the last time they won a game.
- 12:39At home when was psyhawk? Around that time I.
- 12:43Think it was. It might have been.
- 12:44It was that day, I think it was. That day seems like a lifetime
- 12:49ago. Wow.
- 12:50They got lost the final game of that series against the White
- 12:53Sox. Swept by the Guardians in three,
- 12:55swept by the Braves in three, went on the road, and then,
- 12:59well, that was it. But still, that's wild.
- 13:01A calendar month for a team a game away from the ALCS.
- 13:05Didn't win a game at home in a month.
- 13:08I I think to answer your question, I, I think as a fan, I
- 13:12would, I would rather see the Tigers and the Blue Jays play.
- 13:16Sure, you got to deal with Scubal, but you know what?
- 13:18The Jays got some dudes too. This is Savage, this rookie,
- 13:22He's unbelievable. He's again, he, he's, he's going
- 13:25to, there's going to come a time that he's not going to be
- 13:29unhittable as he seemingly has been since he since he got the
- 13:35opportunity. I mean, this is a guy that
- 13:36started in Abel. He stopped at every level.
- 13:41So, but we'll see where it goes. We'll see where it goes.
- 13:44Do you remember our picks for the World Series back in March?
- 13:48Do you have your notebook with I?
- 13:50Have always, every day. It's always here.
- 13:52I I almost don't want to do this.
- 13:54The world. Series because yeah, I almost
- 13:57don't want to do this. It's you think it's that bad?
- 14:00No, I don't. No, it's a complete opposite.
- 14:03You had the Rangers no over the Dodgers.
- 14:08No, I didn't didn't have the Blue Jays. 2025, it's right
- 14:11here. I thought I had the Blue Jays
- 14:13over the Dodgers. Two years ago, God.
- 14:16So I was ahead of time. You were ahead of.
- 14:18Time. There you go.
- 14:19I had the Dodgers over the Rangers, and you talked me into
- 14:23the Rangers and the Dodgers. We both lost a lot of money on
- 14:25both of those teams. Our our baseball.
- 14:27Picks were awful. Awful, awful.
- 14:30Yeah, just terrible. I'm going to do my own research
- 14:32next year, yeah. Because we both, I did talk into
- 14:36it too, because I was strong on the Rangers and I'm a stronger
- 14:40on the Diamondbacks and neither one of them saw the post season.
- 14:43Hello John, how are you? Guys, I got to talk about
- 14:49Clayton Kershaw all right, as as a Giants fan, I love that
- 14:56Clayton Kershaw has pitched like 447 innings against the Giants.
- 15:01His ERA is 2 point O 8. He has the best ERA of any
- 15:07pitcher against a particular team with a certain number of
- 15:10minimum innings that you can go back, you can add in the guys
- 15:14from the 60s and his and his ERA is still better than anybody's.
- 15:19And of course he never had to play them in postseason, right?
- 15:23So they never, they never got to take advantage of that loophole.
- 15:28And he just just put them in a box and and you know, locked him
- 15:33up every single time. So I hope it doesn't make me a
- 15:36bad person that when I saw, I didn't actually watch the game,
- 15:39but I saw that line score and I was like, yes, I'm down with
- 15:42that. I am.
- 15:43I am completely down with that. Love seeing Toronto do their
- 15:46thing. Love seeing the Yankees out of
- 15:48it. Pulling hard for the Brewers.
- 15:51Pat Murphy was coaching ASU when I was out in Phoenix covering
- 15:55that team. He was, he was the coach there.
- 15:57He's a great guy. So I'd love to see them when I
- 15:59know you have a lot of Cubs fans that listen, but that that would
- 16:03not like that. But.
- 16:05Overall, it's been, you know, it's been pretty entertaining.
- 16:08No, it's been great. You've been great, John.
- 16:10Good to hear from you. Thanks very much.
- 16:12You know what I thought about that coming in, because we make
- 16:14such a big deal of how cool that.
- 16:16Well, maybe I do, but you come along with this, how cool the
- 16:19Stanley Cup Playoffs are. Yes, absolutely.
- 16:20Right. It just elevates the sport to
- 16:22another level. So does Major League Baseball.
- 16:25Yeah. Don't, don't you think?
- 16:26Oh, I'm right there. And we both leave love games one
- 16:29through 162. But this just takes it to
- 16:31another level. October baseball.
- 16:33There's a reason why they call it with that it's different.
- 16:36It's a feeling that you just don't get.
- 16:39It's the tenseness. The crowd shots, though, We
- 16:42don't get the crowd shots because of the pitch clock like
- 16:44we once did. True.
- 16:45Yeah. Still, even last night, watching
- 16:48the end of the Cubs game and then the beginning of the
- 16:50Phillies Dodgers with my daughter as she wasn't allowed
- 16:53to watch what she wanted last night.
- 16:54Good. Sometimes she got.
- 16:56And but she was into it like she was enthralled, really
- 16:59interested in and keeping an eye on things and, and watching.
- 17:02We talked about, you know, bunt where you go and she's playing
- 17:05softball and kind of understanding the game at a
- 17:07deeper level. But she was locked into it and
- 17:09she said this is different than when the Twins play.
- 17:13This is different than when the Twins play.
- 17:15And it absolutely was it. And you get that feeling.
- 17:17I do want to mention one thing, as we talked with Clayton
- 17:19Kershaw and the woes in the postseason, It was 2020.
- 17:24It was all weird, but that postseason he was outstanding.
- 17:27Was he? He won two games of the World
- 17:29Series when they won a World Series.
- 17:31And though I like to give our friends John Bowenkamp crap
- 17:33about it's not a real World Series, it was a World Series.
- 17:36He won two games there. That's.
- 17:37The play in the regular season. 60 or 60?
- 17:40Was it 60? Yeah.
- 17:42The because that year I was just looking at the the Dodgers, they
- 17:45went 43 and 17. The Dodgers did that season, but
- 17:49in that postseason, Kershaw went four and one in his five starts,
- 17:53a 2.93 ERA, 37 strikeouts and two wins in the World Series.
- 17:57Yeah, that's that's pretty darn good.
- 17:58So he has that moment and I'm going to guess for many Dodger
- 18:01fans, that's going to they're not going to have the thought
- 18:04process that we do about all the failures.
- 18:07When they're thinking about those, remember that there's one
- 18:09there's at least that moment that that playoff run that they
- 18:12can point to and say it wasn't all bad and we got our first
- 18:15World Series since 1980. Nine.
- 18:16Yeah, that fairpoint. You know what else it is?
- 18:18There's something about the the the Major League playoffs and
- 18:21we'll go to break right after this.
- 18:24And I don't want hockey to change because I love that it
- 18:26starts in the middle of April and they don't ward the Cup
- 18:28until the middle of June. But October you're done.
- 18:31I mean, these things move along, right?
- 18:33You got the wild card. That could be two games.
- 18:35Then you're divisional, you win 3 and you move on.
- 18:39It, it, it, it identifies and it's, it's champion within four
- 18:46or five weeks. So there's something to be said
- 18:48for that. We'll take your time out before
- 18:49we do that. Let's go to kx&o.com.
- 18:52You can enter this nationwide contest.
- 18:54It's your chance to win $1000. The pop up box will appear in
- 18:58the pop up box. Type the keyword win, win at KX
- 19:02and o.com. Someone is going to win $1000.
- 19:05Win at KX and o.com so quickly. On the local front, who are you
- 19:12more confident with this week? Of the Iowa or Iowa State.
- 19:15Who are you more confident is gonna get a win on the road?
- 19:18Hawkeyes go into with Madison Boulder for the Cyclones.
- 19:21Who do you feel better take? Is it either or either or?
- 19:25Cuz I think more confident. OK, I'll say this.
- 19:30I think you like both of them. Huh.
- 19:31I do, but I think I like Iowa better because I think Gronowski
- 19:35is going to play. Listening to Kirk last night, I
- 19:37didn't listen, but I saw the reports of what's his radio show
- 19:41that he does on Wednesdays. Whatever it is, he basically
- 19:45came out and said Gronowski is going to be the guy.
- 19:48Let me find the exact quote here 'cause I'm pretty sure I Kirk
- 19:53Farren's on Hawk Talk last night.
- 19:55Here's his quote. Right now.
- 19:57It's realistic that he'll get to play.
- 19:59Nothing is written in ink right now, but we'll see how the rest
- 20:03of the week goes. Some room for optimism.
- 20:05He's going to play. He's going to play.
- 20:07And if he's going to play, he's going to start.
- 20:10On the Iowa State side, I saw something pretty concerning the
- 20:13last three years. After Iowa State lost their
- 20:16first game of the season, they went on the road as favorites
- 20:20and they lost all three of those games.
- 20:22Really, that's a trend. 3 consecutive years.
- 20:26Lose game #1 go on the road as a favorite and they lost all
- 20:30three. Read into that what you will,
- 20:33but that was a little bit of an eye opener for me.
- 20:36Those Colorado teams got a lot going on.
- 20:38They really do. There's there's a lot happening
- 20:41there and with Dion, with his health, what they're going
- 20:44through and you just wonder kind of about the mental state of
- 20:47that team of where they're going to be.
- 20:49But just thought that trend was at minimum an interesting one,
- 20:53not a one off three straight years this has happened.
- 20:55We'll see where it goes. Going to be I I would I would
- 20:59lean. I I think they'll both win.
- 21:01But if I had to only pick one. This is what Jay Scott just
- 21:04tweeted at us, then maybe there's something to this.
- 21:06Word is when we're talking about why the Phillies and the Dodgers
- 21:10are playing early today, don't forget it's playing later on
- 21:13tonight. Eagles.
- 21:14The Eagles, Yeah. Yeah, right.
- 21:16I mean, Eagles and Phillies going up against each other.
- 21:18No thanks for Philadelphia fans. But what a night it is for
- 21:21Philadelphia fans potentially, right?
- 21:23How many games does does Philly do?
- 21:25Philadelphia fans see their team win twice, once or none.
- 21:30Well, I think they'll beat the Giants.
- 21:31I do too. They'll maybe trickier than you
- 21:34think. Really.
- 21:35What's? The number 7 1/2?
- 21:36Yep, you think you're so you're. I'm grabbing, I'm grabbing the
- 21:39Are you? Oh, absolutely.
- 21:41I'll be grabbing the points in this one.
- 21:42Divisional game, short week. I don't forget Philadelphia lost
- 21:47last week. They got to be a little bit PO
- 21:48D. I like the Dodgers again.
- 21:50I liked them last night. The splits on the road at
- 21:55compared to home for Christopher Sanchez pretty significant.
- 21:58He's a hell of a pitcher. He's great, but he's even better
- 22:01at home and he's still good on the road.
- 22:03But that's one that I'm keeping my eye on, on that front.
- 22:06So if it goes to a Game 5 on Saturday, it would be Otani for
- 22:11the Dodgers, right? Yeah, I think it would be.
- 22:14I think it's Otani. I don't know who'd counter for
- 22:17Philadelphia. Man, what a time of year.
- 22:22Lee Sterling will join us next year.
- 22:24Hot Lee Sterling. Exactly, He'll have the 9:00 and
- 22:261:00 in the last two weeks. Well done, Lee.
- 22:30Be a lot of ears pricked up when Lee.
- 22:32Sterling joins us, Matt Snyder on Major League Baseball, Miller
- 22:35and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 22:40Hi, Miller and Condon, welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 22:43Let's get right to him, the red hot Lee Sterling
- 22:46paramountsports.com Five and O last week, 9 and one in the last
- 22:51two weeks. They're called him the stove
- 22:54because he's. Hot.
- 22:55He is. Hello, Lee Sterling.
- 22:57You are hot. How are you?
- 22:59I'm good, I'm good. Just yeah, it this time of year
- 23:06with baseball, playoffs and hockey starting and basketball
- 23:10starting in less than two weeks, sometimes I'm not.
- 23:13I'm not leaving the office till 12:31 in the morning.
- 23:15So makes it a little easier though when you're winning.
- 23:18Not that it does. Let's get into the games, Lee,
- 23:21and see if you can continue this incredible streak that you've
- 23:23been on with us as these free plays for everybody, along with
- 23:26the plays over at paramountsports.com.
- 23:29Let's open up in the Big 12. BYU undefeated, getting a little
- 23:34bit of buzz. Bareback Meyer, He has been
- 23:36tremendous here as of late. Lane 2 1/2 against Arizona.
- 23:40Yeah, so this Arizona team I would only consider backing at
- 23:43home. So the quarterback Noah Fafita,
- 23:4713 touchdowns, just three interceptions.
- 23:50My alma mater's transfer, Ismael Mahdi, almost 400 yards and
- 23:55averaging 6 yards a carry here. Cougars are on the road for the
- 23:59third time in fourth four weeks here.
- 24:02Kind of pretty big look ahead next week with Utah game.
- 24:06So I just think this BYU team may be getting a little
- 24:11stressed. They give up 24 points to a
- 24:13really bad West Virginia offense.
- 24:16It has no quarterback at all here.
- 24:18I like Zone at home here 3128. All right, the Buckeyes and
- 24:23Illinois, this is a is it the early game?
- 24:25I believe it is on on Fox on Saturday morning.
- 24:28Ohio State, those Buckeyes undefeated, Illinois bounced
- 24:31back. Big number, though.
- 24:33Ohio State better than two touchdowns 14 1/2.
- 24:37Yeah, and and and Illinois look good offensively last week.
- 24:40I'm a little concerned about their defense.
- 24:43I am anything you know that plays Ohio State.
- 24:45They're they're two receivers, probably the best in the country
- 24:49here. Ohio State since that lost to
- 24:52Michigan last year, 9 and O straight up 8 O and one against
- 24:57the spread. So I just think that this team
- 25:00right now in a roll first time that they played each other
- 25:04since 2017. I was a little shocked at that.
- 25:07I mean, statistically, Minnesota was the number one team in total
- 25:11defense until last week. So they laid a number on them,
- 25:15almost 500 total yards here. So Ohio State, they might have
- 25:19three or four players on their team offensively and defensively
- 25:22that should be in the Heisman top ten.
- 25:24They are that talented, that explosive here.
- 25:27So there's different levels. I think it's Ohio State, Oregon
- 25:31and Miami, 123 and right now pretty much everyone else.
- 25:35Sometimes you got to lay it if you want to play it.
- 25:37Ohio State, 3821. Let's stay in the Big 10 and go
- 25:40to a huge matchup. Top 10 showdown.
- 25:43Oregon, Indiana. It doesn't feel like a Big 10
- 25:46game, but here it is in a monster one.
- 25:48Lot of steam early in the week on Oregon.
- 25:50Down now 7 1/2 point favorite at home against the Hoosiers.
- 25:55OK, so here's what's interesting.
- 25:57I just saw one possible, you know, pre draft thing where they
- 26:03had, you know, they picked the top 32 players in what order and
- 26:07I was shocked. They had Fernando Mendoza going
- 26:11#1 Now I think this kid is good. I think he's talented.
- 26:17But how about this? This year so far they went to
- 26:21Iowa, they scored 20 points. And in the games last year on
- 26:26the road, these are games on the road.
- 26:29They got whipped at SMU 38 6 when he was at a Cal 6 points,
- 26:34only scored 15 in a 1715, lost the pit and 14 to 9 to 2 and 10
- 26:41Florida State. So there's a big difference in
- 26:44his home production as as far as on the road here.
- 26:47Dante Moore, 1200 yards, 14 touchdowns, just one
- 26:52interception. And I think the offensive and
- 26:54defensive lines here for the ducks #1 best in the country
- 26:58here. I like Oregon.
- 27:00I think they win this game by double 3727.
- 27:03All right, let's get to the two needle movers.
- 27:05We'll start with Rocco Beck leading his Cyclones into
- 27:08Boulder Folsom Field to take on the Buffs.
- 27:11Cyclones about 3 point favorite. Yeah, and the Buffaloes, you
- 27:16know, they just don't classify as even a good team as far as
- 27:20statistically on offense or defense.
- 27:22And it shows here. Colorado 11, four and one
- 27:26against the spread since Deion Sanders took over at home.
- 27:29So they are a tough out here. You know, I think I would say it
- 27:34looks good. But that defense now little
- 27:37worried about them. But 3 1/2, I mean, three points
- 27:40now, that's not a whole lot to lay.
- 27:42I think the better team will win this game.
- 27:44Not going to be easy, though. Iowa State, 30 to 24.
- 27:48Let's stay in the state. The Hawkeyes, they go on the
- 27:50road. Also like Iowa State, they make
- 27:52their way up to Madison. Looks like Mark Gurdowski
- 27:55reading between the lines. Sounds like he's going to try to
- 27:56give it a go coming off that knee sprain that he sustained
- 27:59against Indiana Hawkeyes. They are a 3 1/2 point favorite
- 28:03in Madison. Yeah, and and what what's really
- 28:07perplexing, I'm watching they get first drive by Wisconsin was
- 28:10the thing of beauty. I mean, you could tell they had
- 28:13eight or 10 plays. And then after that they're
- 28:15looking at that call sheet and they're like, not much we can do
- 28:19here. And and then at the end it it's
- 28:21not often you see a coach just absolutely, I thought quit on
- 28:25his team in this program as a whole.
- 28:27But that's what we saw from Luke Fickle in their game against
- 28:30Michigan with Michigan driving with A2 score lead.
- 28:33Fickle kept all his time outs in his pocket and, and, and just
- 28:37let the game in. Sure, you know, it was a long
- 28:39shot to come back, but you know, why will this team believe in
- 28:44him? I think if he doesn't believe in
- 28:46them. So the whiskey offense here is
- 28:48going to have to get going here. And I think the Iowa offense has
- 28:51improved here, even on the the road.
- 28:53I think they're the right side. I think this Wisconsin team is
- 28:56done. Could be the end to Luke Fickle.
- 28:58They lose a couple more in a row.
- 29:00I like Iowa here, 2817. Your game of the week and it is
- 29:04the game of the week, particularly in the NFL.
- 29:06The Chiefs, the 2 1/2 point favorite over the lines.
- 29:08Lee, if the audience wants more information on this, again,
- 29:11you're 9 and one in the last couple of weeks.
- 29:13You're on a terrific role. How did they reach a
- 29:15paramountsports.com, obviously, but how else Lee.
- 29:19Yep, just call that number right now.
- 29:21I'm going to give this game away to the 1st 10 callers, call
- 29:24800-400-9741. Give you the Kansas City game
- 29:29against Detroit. This could be a Super Bowl
- 29:31preview. 1st 10 callers, 800-400-9741.
- 29:36The game is on me and we don't call it October, we call it
- 29:39October. There's games every single day
- 29:42now for the next 49 days. So you want to get through the
- 29:45end of the month through Halloween normally 497 used
- 29:49coupon code save 100 to 397 dollars one place
- 29:54paramountsports.com. Thank you, bud.
- 29:56We'll talk to you in a week. Thanks, Lee.
- 29:58OK. Yep, keep it going.
- 29:59Lee Sterling, paramountsports.com, nine and
- 30:02one Matt Snyder on Major League Baseball.
- 30:04He joins us next Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 30:07Network. Mary Condon, welcome back 12:45
- 30:26I was Sports Radio Network matt.snyderhecoversbaseball@cbssports.com
- 30:33Hello, Matt Snyder, got your your passport ready to go as you
- 30:36follow the World Series north of the border.
- 30:38Maybe one series to go, but have you been to Roger Center?
- 30:43No, nor have I. No, I have not.
- 30:47Well, what you haven't? You got to get there.
- 30:49Come. On I hear you.
- 30:50I hear you maybe one day I've seen him here a bunch of times I
- 30:53mean here in in the states anyways, so leave that series.
- 30:56But let's get to what's still left to play and obviously the
- 30:59one that moves your needle and the needle bump most of the
- 31:01listeners is the Cubs as they try to extend this thing and get
- 31:05it back to a game five in Milwaukee.
- 31:09The key to this is what I mean Ian Hap.
- 31:11But some of the bats slowly come alive.
- 31:13Maybe HAPS not quite there yet, but Tucker started to wake up.
- 31:17PCA had a big hit yesterday. What's the key to getting to a
- 31:20Game 5 in your mind, Matt? Yeah, I think they need to get
- 31:25to Freddy, Freddy Peralta. I mean, if you look at the the
- 31:29back end of the Brewers bullpen, they didn't have to use any of
- 31:32those guys yesterday at all. So and then that is a testament
- 31:37to guys like Jose Quintana and Chad Patrick who are normally
- 31:42starters and came out and gave the Brewers some great, great
- 31:46work and relief. So now you're sitting there
- 31:48looking at your eBay. McGill didn't even get used at
- 31:52all yesterday. So you know, they didn't get
- 31:56used, I don't think in game one. I know in Game 2 they got used,
- 31:59but then there was a day off then, you know, so they they
- 32:03haven't had much work at all. So those guys are rested and
- 32:06could probably go 3 innings between the two of them maybe.
- 32:11So I kind of feel like you need to get Freddy Peralta early like
- 32:14the Cubs have done so far in the series with runs in the first.
- 32:16But just one solo home run is not going to be enough.
- 32:19When you hit a three run home run in the first, that's not
- 32:21going to be enough when you when you score four in the first,
- 32:23you've got to keep tacking on. And the other thing is I feel
- 32:27like Boyd needs to throw zeros up there because I know that the
- 32:31formula that it seems like Council and the Cubs want to do
- 32:33is. And, and again, I know they used
- 32:35those five relievers yesterday, Pomeranz, Field bar, Keller,
- 32:40Kittridge and Palencia. And they probably will say they
- 32:45can get 5 innings out of those guys.
- 32:46Again, I just don't think it's quite as sure of a of a thing as
- 32:50the Brewers back in guys. And we've seen Keller have a
- 32:52few, like very close, we'll say near misses.
- 32:57Plenty gave the three bombs to Jackson Terrio in Game 2.
- 33:01Kittredge, he gave up a home run.
- 33:03He's got knocked on a little. So those guys are not so thick.
- 33:05If you get boy to throw up zeros for five innings in the Cubs
- 33:08score four runs, OK, now you're talking.
- 33:12Just not sure how that's going to come together, though.
- 33:14My hunch is this is the end of the line today.
- 33:17With a Boyd we saw it didn't go well in three days.
- 33:20Rest back to normal, rest here on top of it back at home.
- 33:23Definitely an advantage you'd feel like on that part of it.
- 33:27Why are we feeling about Boyd in this when he confident that at
- 33:30minimum, you know, he can give them a couple times through the
- 33:33order and be certainly better than what we saw on Saturday?
- 33:36I think he'll be a lot better than we thought Saturday, which
- 33:38is not a high bar, but then again, you could say like, oh
- 33:41man, he could have been out of that first inning with two runs
- 33:44allowed if Nico made a routine play that Nico can usually make
- 33:47with his eyes closed. I do think Boyd will be better
- 33:51this time, but again, not saying a ton.
- 33:55Maybe similar to game one of the wild card round or something
- 33:58where he pitched into the 5th. He gave up, I believe one run
- 34:01there. I I think you can expect
- 34:03something similar there. I just think Freddie Peralzo is
- 34:06going to be just good and then the Bolton Brewers will win the
- 34:08Bolton battle, but I do think Boyd is going to be a lot
- 34:11better. Sanchez V Glass now Phillies,
- 34:14Dodgers as the Phillies try to get this back where they'll
- 34:17play, where they'll face Ohtani in all likelihood on on Sunday.
- 34:22So let's get to this one. Phillies made the Schwarber home
- 34:25run change totally. I mean, I know that we thought
- 34:28that the Aaron Judge home run in game three changed that series
- 34:32to change it for one night. We'll see if Schwarber's home
- 34:34run changes it for one night or actually extends it, but my God,
- 34:38did he get all of that baseball? There was there was a Home Run
- 34:44Derby there and I don't think anybody hit it over really like
- 34:48steel partition over the top of the of the outfield stands there
- 34:53that that was so that the measurement was 455.
- 34:57I know that a lot of people react like like that because
- 35:01we've heard of something like 480 to dead center.
- 35:03Like you got to keep in mind it's down the line, it's 330
- 35:06down the line. So 125 feet over the fence.
- 35:11That just sounds ridiculous to have it be that far over a
- 35:16fence. And it was a little bit
- 35:18reminiscent of the home run against you Darvish and the
- 35:21Padres and Petco Park that went into the upper deck there.
- 35:23Because I've never seen anybody else hit it into the upper deck
- 35:27and Petco Park like that. So it's just, man, what more can
- 35:31you say? My fellow Hoosier, it's really
- 35:34really fun to watch him do his thing in the post.
- 35:36Season. Didn't he break the Didn't he
- 35:38break the? Was it at Wrigley Field he broke
- 35:41something with a home run or it ended?
- 35:43Up hit it over. He hit it over the board.
- 35:45It was like right over the board and below that Budweiser logo.
- 35:50And I've never seen anybody do that since.
- 35:53So it's and The funny thing is his first career playoff game
- 35:57was at PNC Park against Garrett Cole.
- 36:00First inning, he had an RBI single.
- 36:02So the Cutler up won nothing right away.
- 36:04His second at bat, he hit one into the Allegheny.
- 36:07So he just, no matter what venue he's in, in the playoff, you're
- 36:11going to see something, just some kind of gargantuan home
- 36:15home run. Matt, let's jump over to Game 5
- 36:18tomorrow. Scuba gets the ball, but it's in
- 36:20Seattle and it's George Kirby. Now.
- 36:22This hasn't been vintage George Kirby this season.
- 36:25Still had a good start his first time out in the playoffs.
- 36:28Which way of leaning with the Tigers and the Mariners?
- 36:31Yeah, I'm going to go with the Mariners actually.
- 36:34I like them at the plus money there.
- 36:37I just Google I think is going to deal.
- 36:40I just think it's going to be a really, really low scoring game
- 36:43and I'm going to trust the Mariners to get the job done
- 36:45because they are the better team and they've been the better team
- 36:48for quite a while. The Tigers, kudos to them for
- 36:50battling back yesterday. Once they were down 3, nothing.
- 36:53I kind of thought they were going to go quietly.
- 36:54They did not. They proved me wrong.
- 36:55Good job. But I think the Mariners are
- 36:58going to find a way to scratch and claw and get it done at
- 37:01home. Wouldn't be surprised if the
- 37:03Tigers win, obviously, because they have school.
- 37:05But I think Kirby's going to hold down that Tigers offense,
- 37:07which yesterday notwithstanding, is still pretty punchless.
- 37:12So yeah, I'm going to go with the mayors to get the job done
- 37:15there. But it's going to be a good one.
- 37:17It's going to be close. It's going to go down to the
- 37:18wire. Who gets the blame for the
- 37:20Yankees getting knocked out in fours?
- 37:21John Schneider Mean. Oh yeah, I'm sure Aaron will.
- 37:26So here's the thing on that. Like, we talked about it in
- 37:29early August and I said, yeah, I thought they should have fired
- 37:32Aaron Boone. And I I don't think this series
- 37:36was Boone's fault at all. But at some point, that doesn't
- 37:39really matter, right? Like.
- 37:40You could have put a. Lot of you could have put a lot
- 37:43of the World Series at his feet last year between the game one
- 37:46decisions that how sloppy they were in Game 5 because that was
- 37:50just representative of how sloppy they've got under Aaron
- 37:53Boone for a year. And at some point, that catches
- 37:56up with you, and it did catch up with them.
- 37:57And we still see the sloppiness in the field and on the bases.
- 38:02And it's been what, 8 years now? One World Series, no World
- 38:08Series, championships. At some point you're the
- 38:10Yankees. He's had plenty of chances.
- 38:13You probably need another voice in there.
- 38:15Again, I don't think anything past like the middle of August
- 38:18was necessarily Boone's fault. And they were playing really,
- 38:22really well down the stretch and kind of bad luck on the draw and
- 38:26the playoffs because they tied the Blue Jays for the best
- 38:28record. And maybe this should have been
- 38:29the ALCS, but they got out played by the Jays pretty much
- 38:33throughout the series except for the second-half of game three.
- 38:37And and I don't think that was Boone's fault.
- 38:39But again, it's that's the job. And you've had eight years on
- 38:43the Yankees job without winning the World Series championship.
- 38:46I don't even think Girardi had that long and he won one.
- 38:49So maybe it was right around there.
- 38:51But anyway, I I would be good with it.
- 38:55I'm just my only. The only thing I have is when
- 38:57people go crazy during the series about how much Boone's
- 39:00messing everything up. I don't think he messed anything
- 39:02up on that series at all. I think they just got beat.
