- 0:37This is Alan Condon back with another episode
- 0:40of the Becker's CFO and Revenue Cycle podcast.
- 0:44And today, I'm thrilled to be joined by
- 0:46Jonathan Ma, CFO of Sutter Health. That's a
- 0:50nonprofit integrated health system where that includes 27
- 0:54hospitals across northern, across Central California.
- 0:57Jonathan, a real pleasure to have you make
- 0:59what I think is your debut podcast appearance,
- 1:01not just at Becker's debut podcast ever.
- 1:04For those of our listeners who might not
- 1:06be as familiar with yourself, the the great
- 1:08work that you do at Sutter Health, do
- 1:10you mind just giving us a little bit
- 1:11more insight into your background and your role
- 1:12at the health system?
- 1:14Sure. Well and thanks, Alan, for having me,
- 1:16and,
- 1:17really pleased to be here. So I've been
- 1:19at Sutter Health since 2019.
- 1:22I joined the company as the treasurer and
- 1:24then,
- 1:24spent some time with financial planning and analysis,
- 1:28before stepping into the interim CFO role last
- 1:30year and then,
- 1:31into the permanent position last May.
- 1:34Before that, I was in health care investment
- 1:36banking at Morgan Stanley in New York. I
- 1:39still had, worked in both the San Francisco
- 1:41and the New York offices.
- 1:43So I've spent, all of my career since
- 1:45college focusing on health care, and it's just
- 1:48a a really
- 1:49great privilege to be at Sutter Health today,
- 1:52and, and watching our company grow and pursue
- 1:55all our strategic initiatives,
- 1:57especially under Warner Thomas's leadership.
- 1:59Yeah. Absolutely. Fantastic leaders surrounding you as well.
- 2:03So, Jonathan, excited to kinda dive in and
- 2:05pick your brains here. You're approaching
- 2:07almost a a year in that permanent CFO,
- 2:10see which you were appointed in last May.
- 2:12No doubt there are sort of things we
- 2:13could touch on here. But
- 2:15as 2026,
- 2:17as February at the time of recording,
- 2:19what are the kind of top two or
- 2:21three trends that you're paying closest attention to
- 2:23in health care today?
- 2:26Sure. I would say, just like many other,
- 2:29not for profit health care systems out there,
- 2:30we're we're very focused on,
- 2:32kind of federal and state developments.
- 2:35You know, serving Medicare and Medi Cal patients
- 2:38are are also core to our mission in
- 2:40in addition to many of the commercial patients,
- 2:43in in our markets.
- 2:44So making sure that we have,
- 2:47kind of just ongoing,
- 2:49eyesight as we can into ongoing developments,
- 2:52in the in the policy realm.
- 2:54You know, our colleagues in digital and and
- 2:57AI and technology, I mean, that is a
- 2:59a huge area of interest for us as
- 3:01an executive management team.
- 3:03So I'm trying to to read up as
- 3:06quickly as I can even though just,
- 3:09those developments are changing,
- 3:11at at light speed as well.
- 3:13But just trying to make sure that I
- 3:14understand from a financial perspective at least how
- 3:16I can support those initiatives,
- 3:18and and really
- 3:20understand
- 3:21the best I can how that could really
- 3:23transform the delivery of health care as we
- 3:25know it. And then I guess the third,
- 3:28in terms of trends or or just
- 3:30a constant focus,
- 3:31for us here at Sutter is our people.
- 3:34I'm really fortunate to have
- 3:36a remarkable,
- 3:37talented
- 3:39team that that really cares about our mission.
- 3:41So always wanting to keep in mind how
- 3:44do we continue to retain and attract the
- 3:46best talent,
- 3:47here at Sutter Health within our finance team,
- 3:50making sure we're meeting the needs of our
- 3:52colleagues and and and the mission,
- 3:54and and that's also a constant focus for
- 3:56me.
- 3:57Mhmm. I'm curious about the first trend that
- 4:00you'd mentioned. I think,
- 4:02certainly a challenging time for for CFOs across
- 4:05the board. I think particularly in in California,
- 4:08I recently spoke with, Scripps Health CFO Brett
- 4:11Tandy, also their CEO Chris Van Goerter, just
- 4:13about the the multitude of challenges facing reimbursement
- 4:17in the state. No doubt we have some
- 4:18of those Medicaid, Medi Cal cuts coming down
- 4:21the pipeline 2026
- 4:23into 2027.
- 4:24There was a lot of a lot of
- 4:26back and forth in terms of ACA subsidies
- 4:28at the end of last year and now
- 4:29expired.
- 4:30I'm curious how how is Sutter thinking about
- 4:33this year and into next with some of
- 4:35those challenges facing, not just Sutter Health, but
- 4:37indeed health systems across the state as we
- 4:39think about some of those medical costs.
- 4:41Yeah. I mean, we're we've been working just
- 4:44like many of our peers on,
- 4:46you know, different scenarios,
- 4:48on stress testing, on on kind of how
- 4:50different,
- 4:51policies could eventually unfold. Obviously, we're,
- 4:54you know, trying to prepare the best we
- 4:56can for the legislative,
- 4:58development as we know them today. I I
- 5:00would also say we're we're hoping that, you
- 5:01know, we're keeping the lines of communication and
- 5:04dialogue open with our policymakers
- 5:07and,
- 5:08our different, associations that we're a member of.
- 5:10I have to give a big shout out
- 5:12to our external affairs team here at Sutter,
- 5:15and they're constantly partnering with us here in
- 5:18finance to help help make sure that we
- 5:21we each on both sides have the the
- 5:23data exchange,
- 5:25so that we can best advocate for
- 5:27our organization and for the industry at both
- 5:29the state and federal level.
- 5:31You know, generally, I'd I'd again, we'd just
- 5:34like to say that we have to keep
- 5:35the lines of communication open so that we
- 5:38can continue to make sure that, health care
- 5:40is
- 5:41is, is supported,
- 5:42in our communities.
- 5:44Mhmm.
- 5:45And then maybe just a word on on
- 5:46your people. Sutter Health, fantastic organization.
- 5:50I believe just shy of 60,000 employees, if
- 5:53I'm not mistaken, 12,000 physicians, whatnot. Kind of
- 5:56what are the the key focuses in terms
- 5:58of,
- 5:59retention,
- 6:00from your workforce? What are the key focuses
- 6:03as you as you refer to your people,
- 6:04your culture this year? Yeah. I think overall,
- 6:07it really is about connecting the purpose and
- 6:09the mission and making sure we're all aligned
- 6:11on kind of the reason why we're here.
- 6:13And I think
- 6:14over the past several years as we've seen
- 6:17the organization evolve,
- 6:19with kind of the team and the mission
- 6:22and,
- 6:23the energy that,
- 6:25Warner has brought to the organization and and
- 6:27the broader management team. I think it's just
- 6:29making sure we're
- 6:31the the teams that we have here know
- 6:32that they belong at Sutter Health and are
- 6:34contributing,
- 6:35to the mission,
- 6:37every day. I think just that connection to
- 6:39purpose is what we've really focused on in
- 6:41trying to make Sutter the best place to
- 6:43work,
- 6:44in health care. And we know it's we're
- 6:45a learning organization too. I think that that's
- 6:48also been,
- 6:49kind of a key part of our messaging
- 6:51to our people and how we've built our
- 6:52teams just to encourage curiosity,
- 6:56new ways of thinking, and that we're
- 6:58we're constantly a work in progress. We're all
- 7:01trying to get better each day. We we
- 7:03give, somebody had a a great phrase the
- 7:05other day, so I can't claim it for
- 7:07myself. But,
- 7:08he said,
- 7:10give yourself the right to always get smarter.
- 7:13And I really liked how that was phrased
- 7:15because it just allows,
- 7:17for constant growth. And, I think that that's
- 7:20how we're we've been trying to shape our
- 7:22teams, here at Sutter.
- 7:24Give yourself the right to always get smarter.
- 7:26I like that one. I'm gonna have to
- 7:27keep a hold of that one for future
- 7:29reference. It wasn't it wasn't my I can't
- 7:30claim,
- 7:31credit for it, but I liked how it
- 7:33was phrased and,
- 7:34you know, taking feedback,
- 7:37understanding growth.
- 7:38We're all works in progress both, you know,
- 7:40as career professionals.
- 7:42But just being open to getting smarter each
- 7:45day, I think, has been,
- 7:46part of the curiosity and the and the
- 7:48learning part of of our organization.
- 7:51Yeah. No. Absolutely.
- 7:52Jonathan, we touched at the top of the
- 7:54conversation about some of the some of the
- 7:56ubiquitous challenges. I don't wanna kinda focus too
- 7:58much on the challenges in health care. There
- 7:59are many. There are always gonna be many.
- 8:01But there's also a lot of opportunity. There's
- 8:03also a lot of room for excitement,
- 8:05in health care. No doubt at Sutter Health
- 8:07as well.
- 8:08As you as you look ahead as CFO
- 8:10of the organization,
- 8:11what most excites you now?
- 8:14I think the what's what has excited me
- 8:17over the past few years and then also
- 8:18as I'm looking forward is just our growth
- 8:21and and really that's translating into the ability
- 8:24to serve more people and patients
- 8:26and make a bigger impact.
- 8:28So when we're already, you know, we're fortunate
- 8:31at Saturday,
- 8:32at at this point, being nearly a $20,000,000,000
- 8:34revenue organization.
- 8:36And what I try and communicate,
- 8:39not just with the finance team, but also
- 8:40others outside of finance that, you know, revenues
- 8:43are one way to kind of or just
- 8:44one metric. Overall, we should think about
- 8:47how
- 8:48that is the the potential for our platform
- 8:50and really the scale of our mission.
- 8:53And the fact that we can continue to
- 8:54grow more just because there's such a need
- 8:57for health care services, not just in California,
- 9:00but nationally,
- 9:02I I think
- 9:03being part of a team
- 9:05and, thankfully, you know, being supported by a
- 9:07board of directors
- 9:08that really shares in that vision on growing
- 9:11to serve more more patients to the best
- 9:13we can,
- 9:14I think is what,
- 9:16is is really
- 9:18motivating and and helps me,
- 9:20kind of focus my team and and energies
- 9:22as I'm looking at the year ahead?
- 9:24Yeah. It's fascinating. It kinda ties nicely into
- 9:27my next question. I think we've covered many
- 9:29systems
- 9:31recently,
- 9:32growing into new states, multi health multistate health
- 9:35systems, new regional expansions.
- 9:37I know Sutter recently appointed Scott Norland as
- 9:40a EVP of corporate development and partnerships.
- 9:42As you grow beyond this $20,000,000,000
- 9:44revenue health system,
- 9:46is nationally something that you're looking at potentially
- 9:49expanding outside of California into new markets, and
- 9:51what potentially might make sense for sort of
- 9:53health in that regard?
- 9:54Yeah. I think just like all not for
- 9:56profit health care systems, you know, we're looking
- 9:58at, you know, different scenarios. I know the
- 10:00kind of the reporting on on Scott's position
- 10:03kind of captured all of that. I'm
- 10:06I'm really excited to have the opportunity to
- 10:09work with him and learn from him. We've
- 10:11already had, kind of we spent quite a
- 10:13bit of time together.
- 10:14So overall, you know, I think as we're
- 10:16continuing to to grow, we're looking at a
- 10:19lot of different scenarios just in any way
- 10:20that we can make, the best impact we
- 10:22can.
- 10:24Absolutely.
- 10:24And I guess maybe just in the in
- 10:26the near term,
- 10:28twelve months to twenty four months, you said
- 10:29growth no doubt is a is a key
- 10:31key focus for sort of for yourself, your
- 10:33executive team.
- 10:35I guess more specifically, what does that growth
- 10:37mean? Is that,
- 10:38improving access to care, digital expansion,
- 10:41recruiting more physicians? I guess, is there a
- 10:43key one or two areas that you're really
- 10:45focusing on for the near term?
- 10:47I think it's all of the above that
- 10:49you just mentioned and and probably, you know,
- 10:52eve even more than that. But I think
- 10:54it's, you know, in our management
- 10:56presentations, we've and and it's not just,
- 11:00only to Sutter, but I know in a
- 11:01lot of, a lot of systems think about
- 11:03the flywheel or virtuous cycle.
- 11:05You know, it all kind of goes together,
- 11:07meaning
- 11:08making sure we're recruiting the clinicians,
- 11:12that we need in our communities,
- 11:14to address,
- 11:15you know, the patient patient needs,
- 11:19to make sure that we're we're serving more
- 11:21more people in in different settings,
- 11:23whether that's, through a digital front door or
- 11:26bricks and mortar.
- 11:28I I think all of that really goes
- 11:30together. So,
- 11:31it it's it's probably and, kind of all
- 11:34the items that you mentioned.
- 11:36Got it. Definitely multi multi pronged approach to
- 11:38grow growth across the board, it sounds like.
- 11:41Jonathan,
- 11:42one final question I'd love to ask you
- 11:44as as just kinda popped up. I think
- 11:46as it relates to
- 11:48catch word, here we go, AI. Because I
- 11:50think that a conversation goes by with CFOs,
- 11:53revenue cycle leaders about AI not popping up
- 11:55into the conversation. But, I guess, from your
- 11:58perspective as CFO, Sutter,
- 12:01I'd love to kinda get your opinion. How
- 12:03is Sutter using it specifically in the revenue
- 12:06cycle as we see this kind of push
- 12:09pull dynamic with payers? Payers have no no
- 12:11doubt been using AI in the revenue cycle
- 12:13for quite some time. Feels like providers like
- 12:16Sutter Health and these these tech forward health
- 12:18systems playing catch up in terms of the
- 12:21vetting AI more meaningfully into the revenue cycle.
- 12:24Curious to hear maybe your perspective at Sutter.
- 12:27Any kind of, any kind of real impacts
- 12:29that you're seeing here? Anything you're particularly excited
- 12:31about in that regard?
- 12:32Yeah. That's definitely on our road map, especially
- 12:35with all of the kind of manual interventions
- 12:38and kind of repetitive repetitive natures of really
- 12:41not just revenue cycle, but a lot of,
- 12:43workflows in health care. I would say,
- 12:46with AI, we're, again, fortunate to have,
- 12:50you know, remarkable
- 12:51digital team led by Laura Wilt, our chief
- 12:53digital officer. You know, she has been instrumental
- 12:56in helping us,
- 12:58you know, put together a road map,
- 13:00that incorporates
- 13:02AI and digital advancements in revenue cycle. We
- 13:04also have partners,
- 13:05through r one and Epic.
- 13:07So,
- 13:08it's
- 13:09it'll it'll be a collaboration
- 13:11among,
- 13:13ourselves and our outside partners, but our hopes
- 13:16for AI are very high, and and we
- 13:17definitely see a lot of opportunity there.
- 13:20Absolutely. Well, Jonathan, a real pleasure to have
- 13:22you on the podcast with us today. No
- 13:23doubt a lot of exciting things ahead for
- 13:25Sutter, for you and your executive team.
- 13:27Really, really appreciate you taking the time out
- 13:29of your busy schedule, and I look forward
- 13:30to catching up with you again down the
- 13:31line. Anytime. Thanks so much, Alan. Appreciate it.
