- 2:56Speaker 6: It was Wednesday, June twenty fourth. It was warm in
- 2:58Speaker 6: Los Angeles. We were working a day's out of Auto
- 3:00Speaker 6: fift detail. My partner's Frank Smith. The boss is bad Brown,
- 3:03Speaker 6: Chief of Detectives. My name is Friday. We were at
- 3:05Speaker 6: the main jail and it was eight fourteen am when
- 3:07Speaker 6: we got to the second floor. It's the interview room.
- 3:10Speaker 6: Sit on the phone. Yeah, right there.
- 3:14Speaker 7: You guys start pretty early in the morning, don't you. Yeah,
- 3:16Speaker 7: once in a while you got a cigarette.
- 3:18Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, thanks. I never feel like I'm alive.
- 3:21Speaker 7: I never had a cigarette in the morning. How about
- 3:23Speaker 7: imagine here like that first cigarette? All right, what's this
- 3:34Speaker 7: all about?
- 3:35Speaker 6: You know that as well as we do a few questions,
- 3:36Speaker 6: we want to ask, go ahead, ask what's your apartment setup?
- 3:39Speaker 6: I don't know what you're talking about. Now it will
- 3:40Speaker 6: work slowly. Got the whole story from Summers?
- 3:42Speaker 7: So and what do you need from me?
- 3:43Speaker 6: It's like to check out a few things.
- 3:44Speaker 7: What do you mean you got the whole story from Summers?
- 3:46Speaker 7: What did he say?
- 3:46Speaker 6: Told us everything he knows about the setup and what
- 3:48Speaker 6: he says. You're the key man.
- 3:49Speaker 7: Everything goes through you, he said. Then, yeah, you're believing.
- 3:52Speaker 6: Got no reason not to us why we're here. Get
- 3:54Speaker 6: your side of the story.
- 3:57Speaker 7: How much you tell?
- 3:57Speaker 6: You said everything he knows?
- 4:00Speaker 7: Yeah, that figures. You get a guy with agen like that,
- 4:03Speaker 7: and as soon as the roof starts to drop, they
- 4:04Speaker 7: spill their insides out. That's the trouble with doing business
- 4:07Speaker 7: with hypes. You always run into me.
- 4:08Speaker 6: Yeah, I'll hear your side up.
- 4:10Speaker 7: Sure I knew going in. If you lock Summers up,
- 4:12Speaker 7: you'd break. It's a matter of time before he started
- 4:14Speaker 7: seeing things and talked all over the place.
- 4:16Speaker 6: Why don't you do a little the same?
- 4:17Speaker 7: I got no choice. Where do you want me to start?
- 4:19Speaker 6: About the beginning?
- 4:20Speaker 7: As good a place as any?
- 4:21Speaker 6: I guess all right, who's the big gun in the setup?
- 4:23Speaker 7: And you're not going to believe it? Why don't you
- 4:25Speaker 7: try us? I don't know who he is. I don't
- 4:26Speaker 7: got the slightest idea.
- 4:27Speaker 6: And that's the truth, asking us to buy the fact
- 4:29Speaker 6: you work for a guy you don't know.
- 4:30Speaker 7: I don't care if you buy it or not. That's
- 4:31Speaker 7: the way it is. I don't know who the big
- 4:32Speaker 7: man is.
- 4:33Speaker 6: How to get you?
- 4:34Speaker 7: He calls me? Where my place?
- 4:35Speaker 6: When?
- 4:35Speaker 7: When I got something for him?
- 4:37Speaker 6: How does he know?
- 4:37Speaker 7: We got to set time? Each day? He calls and
- 4:39Speaker 7: he tells me what he wants done. I tell him
- 4:41Speaker 7: what's going on.
- 4:41Speaker 6: What happens if you want to talk to him? And
- 4:43Speaker 6: it's not the time?
- 4:43Speaker 7: Nothing?
- 4:44Speaker 6: I gotta wait. How to get paid?
- 4:46Speaker 7: He calls me and tells me where to go I
- 4:47Speaker 7: show up there and that.
- 4:48Speaker 6: Does Wait all right, Now you start at the beginning.
- 4:50Speaker 6: Give us the whole story, all right.
- 4:52Speaker 7: I got in town about six months ago from outside
- 4:55Speaker 7: of Chicago, and later on town for a few days,
- 4:57Speaker 7: and I got this rumbled at, maybe I can pick
- 4:59Speaker 7: up a job.
- 4:59Speaker 6: What'd you hear?
- 5:00Speaker 7: Oh? Just around? I couldn't tell you where. It was
- 5:02Speaker 7: a word here, another one there, just around. Go ahead, Well,
- 5:07Speaker 7: I'm home. One day in the phone rings, I answered,
- 5:09Speaker 7: and the guy asked me if I wanted to go
- 5:10Speaker 7: to work for him. I'm on my opera, So I
- 5:12Speaker 7: asked him what he wanted me to do when he
- 5:13Speaker 7: springs his car ice thing on me. I told him
- 5:15Speaker 7: I wanted no part of it.
- 5:16Speaker 6: Yeah, he kept on talking, kept.
- 5:18Speaker 7: Telling me how I was such a sweet, clean racket.
- 5:19Speaker 7: Now we could work it without being tagged. Finally I
- 5:22Speaker 7: told him I might be willing to sit down and
- 5:23Speaker 7: talk to him about it. He says, no, go that
- 5:26Speaker 7: he didn't want anybody to know who he was, and
- 5:28Speaker 7: that went from me too. He told me he'd swing
- 5:30Speaker 7: the operation, or what do you mean swing? Well, he
- 5:32Speaker 7: said he'd tell me how to set it up, how
- 5:33Speaker 7: to make it work, who to contact. So he had
- 5:35Speaker 7: the organization already, but he needed a man to take
- 5:37Speaker 7: charge of the LA part of it. He told me
- 5:39Speaker 7: that I was the guy he wanted.
- 5:41Speaker 6: Fun.
- 5:41Speaker 5: How he happened to come to you, I don't know.
- 5:43Speaker 7: I did time when I was a kid for grand
- 5:45Speaker 7: theft auto first time I got off light.
- 5:46Speaker 6: What did you do New York State? Right?
- 5:49Speaker 7: Well, maybe you gotta rumble about that. He knew that
- 5:51Speaker 7: I was done. Maybe he figured that I was the
- 5:53Speaker 7: guy to handle it for him. I don't know why
- 5:54Speaker 7: he just called.
- 5:55Speaker 6: Do you have any idea who this man on the
- 5:56Speaker 6: phone was?
- 5:57Speaker 8: No.
- 5:57Speaker 5: I thought about it a lot.
- 5:58Speaker 7: I tried to come up with an answer, but the
- 6:00Speaker 7: just wasn't any least none that I could find.
- 6:02Speaker 6: Might have been somebody who met back East.
- 6:03Speaker 7: I don't know. Could be. I got nowhere knowing the
- 6:05Speaker 7: way the deal worked out. I didn't have any reason
- 6:07Speaker 7: to get nosey. This guy really had it figured out
- 6:09Speaker 7: like a charm. I still don't know how you tagged it.
- 6:11Speaker 7: How about it? You tell me better than yeah, yea.
- 6:15Speaker 6: I go ahead. What happened after you talk to this guy?
- 6:18Speaker 7: Well, I wasn't real anxious right off. I told him
- 6:19Speaker 7: I'd had to think about it. You see, next day
- 6:22Speaker 7: he calls again, told me he wanted to tell me
- 6:24Speaker 7: the deal, lay it out for me. If I thought
- 6:26Speaker 7: it was good, I could go along with it. Otherwise
- 6:27Speaker 7: we could call it quits. I was just about to
- 6:29Speaker 7: get bounced out of my room, so I listened. We
- 6:31Speaker 7: must have talked for about an hour. Yeah, that's when
- 6:33Speaker 7: he laid it out for me. Why had looked the
- 6:35Speaker 7: plane couldn't miss. Wasn't anything he hadn't thought of all
- 6:38Speaker 7: along the line. He had the leaks all plugged up tight.
- 6:40Speaker 7: You see, all right, how this deal worked. I thought
- 6:43Speaker 7: Summers gave you the lineup.
- 6:44Speaker 6: Yeah he did, But we'd like to hear it from you.
- 6:46Speaker 7: Sure you ain't trying to con me into something.
- 6:47Speaker 6: You said it yourself. You had no choice, now I
- 6:49Speaker 6: have you.
- 6:51Speaker 7: Well, the way to work was smooth, real smooth. The Boss,
- 6:55Speaker 7: that's what I called him. He'd call me, tell me
- 6:56Speaker 7: what kind of car he wanted. I'd get in touch
- 6:58Speaker 7: with one of the boys and pass the order on.
- 6:59Speaker 7: You said, Yeah, Hype would steal the car. Call me
- 7:02Speaker 7: book some Hype would steal the car and call me
- 7:05Speaker 7: right away, tell me where he had the car and
- 7:07Speaker 7: The boss would call and I'd tell him. He'd drive
- 7:09Speaker 7: by look at the car. If he lokated, he'd call
- 7:11Speaker 7: me and I'd tell the fellow that saw it to
- 7:12Speaker 7: get it rolling.
- 7:13Speaker 6: They'd have it to Mexico.
- 7:15Speaker 7: Yeah, first off, I'd meet him and give them enough
- 7:17Speaker 7: money to get back here.
- 7:17Speaker 6: Though after that they'd.
- 7:18Speaker 7: Switch the plates in the car and shove a where'd
- 7:20Speaker 7: you get the plates? O? The boss would get him
- 7:22Speaker 7: some place, then they'd be delivered to me, always cold plates.
- 7:24Speaker 7: Say I think he probably got him if he used
- 7:26Speaker 7: car lots. I don't know. That's the way it looked
- 7:28Speaker 7: like to me, said, yeah, what happened? Then other guy
- 7:31Speaker 7: drive the car straight through. He delivered the car to
- 7:33Speaker 7: a contact down a Tijuana.
- 7:35Speaker 6: What about the payoff from Mexico?
- 7:36Speaker 7: How they worked at and I went through me too.
- 7:38Speaker 7: I'd get a call from the boss. He'd tell me
- 7:39Speaker 7: where the meat was. I'd show up and pick up
- 7:41Speaker 7: a paper bag with the narcotics.
- 7:43Speaker 6: That's the way the stolen cars were paid for. Narcotics.
- 7:45Speaker 7: Yeah, Heroin was the best. So by the time we
- 7:48Speaker 7: cut it down, I went a long way. What'd you
- 7:49Speaker 7: do with the stuff, Well, some of it I'd use
- 7:51Speaker 7: for paying off the hype that lifted the car and
- 7:52Speaker 7: the rest went on to the bus.
- 7:54Speaker 6: I'd get it to him.
- 7:54Speaker 7: He'd call me, tell me where to leave it. Maybe
- 7:56Speaker 7: an alley downtown, a telephone pole on Central, once in
- 7:59Speaker 7: the funtain right in front of city, or every time
- 8:02Speaker 7: it's a different place.
- 8:02Speaker 5: Yeah, is it possible?
- 8:03Speaker 6: I mean the others might know who he is.
- 8:05Speaker 7: I talked to an them. No, I don't think they're
- 8:07Speaker 7: holding that.
- 8:08Speaker 6: You know this boss? You ever say anything that could
- 8:10Speaker 6: let you know where he was calling from?
- 8:11Speaker 7: No?
- 8:11Speaker 6: How about his voice? You get anything from man?
- 8:13Speaker 7: What do you mean do you have an accent something
- 8:15Speaker 7: like that? No? Nothing. He talked just like you and me.
- 8:17Speaker 7: There's one thing he's been around. He knows the tricks.
- 8:20Speaker 7: He knows about me, everything I've ever done. Where he talks,
- 8:22Speaker 7: you know, he knows all the rackets.
- 8:24Speaker 6: He ever sent you anything through the mail?
- 8:26Speaker 7: What do you mean, like with the Postmit's right now.
- 8:28Speaker 7: A couple of times he sent me a batch of
- 8:29Speaker 7: plates to use in the cars. But they come by
- 8:31Speaker 7: and missing you.
- 8:31Speaker 6: One of the companies here?
- 8:32Speaker 7: No, just a guy. I asked him who sent him?
- 8:34Speaker 7: But they couldn't tell me.
- 8:35Speaker 6: Couldn't or wouldn't.
- 8:36Speaker 7: I ain't sure, but I really don't think they knew
- 8:38Speaker 7: as as a different guy each time, never the same
- 8:40Speaker 7: one twice. He got some of the plates around, No,
- 8:42Speaker 7: we used the last one on the car last night.
- 8:44Speaker 6: What is the boss usually sent him to here?
- 8:45Speaker 7: Depends how many cars were taken. He keeps track when
- 8:47Speaker 7: we're out of cold plates and not the batch of
- 8:49Speaker 7: him shows up. It depends on the cars, you think.
- 8:51Speaker 6: How about the other man working with you, the ones
- 8:53Speaker 6: here in town? You give us a list of them.
- 8:54Speaker 6: If I do, it makes me a pretty big think
- 8:56Speaker 6: you don't. It's going to make you big trouble.
- 8:58Speaker 7: I suppose. So there's nothing you guys can prom must
- 9:00Speaker 7: be for this.
- 9:00Speaker 6: You know the answer to that too. We can see
- 9:02Speaker 6: that the District Attorney's office knows about the healthy giverers.
- 9:04Speaker 5: That's all we can do.
- 9:05Speaker 7: It's better than nothing. Okay, I'll give you the names.
- 9:07Speaker 6: So when this goes to trial, we can figure you'll
- 9:08Speaker 6: be a witness for the state.
- 9:09Speaker 7: Against well, this boss.
- 9:10Speaker 6: Whoever he has.
- 9:11Speaker 7: Sure, if you can get him, I don't think you
- 9:13Speaker 7: will love that right? Sure? It stands the reason I
- 9:15Speaker 7: worked for the guy I never got to say, m
- 9:16Speaker 7: he ain't gonna want to see the police.
- 9:18Speaker 6: Now he's a little like you, and huh, he's got
- 9:20Speaker 6: no choice. We got the list of names from the
- 9:26Speaker 6: suspect and then we checked with Captain Carl shi in
- 9:28Speaker 6: Arconic's division. He assigned two men to work with us
- 9:31Speaker 6: on the case. We got in touch with the Sheriff's
- 9:33Speaker 6: department and billed Sergeant Jedd Shelton in on the development.
- 9:36Speaker 6: A call was put into al Gaton at San Diego
- 9:38Speaker 6: and he said that he'd get in touch with the
- 9:40Speaker 6: Mexican authorities and line up the cooperation we needed from them.
- 9:43Speaker 6: The name of the contact in Tijuana was given to them,
- 9:46Speaker 6: but they were unable to locate the suspect. We asked
- 9:49Speaker 6: the Stats office to make a new run on the
- 9:50Speaker 6: mo of the auto thefts in an attempt to come
- 9:52Speaker 6: up with a new lead on the head of the
- 9:53Speaker 6: ring of thieves. They turned up six leads that were
- 9:56Speaker 6: checked out and none of us. Nothing. We got in
- 9:59Speaker 6: touch with the State Highway Patrol and we worked out
- 10:01Speaker 6: a system to intercept any cars that might be stolen
- 10:03Speaker 6: in the future by the same gang. The plan was
- 10:06Speaker 6: that in the event we received a call regarding a
- 10:08Speaker 6: stolen vehicle. We'd put it on the air with the
- 10:10Speaker 6: heading of the code word ALYX. This would alert all
- 10:13Speaker 6: police officers between Los Angeles and the Mexican border. The
- 10:17Speaker 6: men named for us by the suspect Harry Sloan were
- 10:19Speaker 6: all taken into custody. Further interrogation netted us no new information.
- 10:23Speaker 6: In the meantime, the leader of the gang had apparently
- 10:25Speaker 6: succeeded in setting up a new group of thieves and
- 10:28Speaker 6: was operating again. The thefts continued through the next month.
- 10:31Speaker 6: During that time, all precautions were taken to keep the
- 10:34Speaker 6: stolen cars from getting to the border, with the speed
- 10:36Speaker 6: with which the gang operated made apprehending them almost impossible.
- 10:39Speaker 6: The radio operation with patrol units along the highway was tried,
- 10:43Speaker 6: but by the time the cars were reported stolen to
- 10:45Speaker 6: us and we were able to get a broadcast out
- 10:47Speaker 6: on them, they were already across the border. Thursday, July thirtieth,
- 10:50Speaker 6: Frank and I checked into the office.
- 10:53Speaker 5: I'll check the book right.
- 10:57Speaker 6: Anything, Oh call here, Skipper. Sure hacked about this thing?
- 11:03Speaker 8: Now?
- 11:04Speaker 5: Can you blame him?
- 11:04Speaker 6: No? I suppose nice. You got a lot of people
- 11:06Speaker 6: leaning on him. I don't know Joe, it's about time
- 11:08Speaker 6: the breaks start falling on our side. Well, we've been
- 11:10Speaker 6: saying that for a long time too. Doesn't seem too
- 11:12Speaker 6: much good. Even when we do.
- 11:13Speaker 5: Nail the big gun, we're gonna have to prove it
- 11:14Speaker 5: and that isn't going to be easy. Yeah.
- 11:16Speaker 6: Way, he's got to work as it's gonna be awful
- 11:18Speaker 6: to have to build a case it'll stick. Well, he
- 11:19Speaker 6: doesn't handle the narcotics, he doesn't handle the money. All
- 11:22Speaker 6: he does is okay to jobs. But it's got to
- 11:23Speaker 6: be an outlet for the heroine.
- 11:25Speaker 7: And where's he getting rid of it?
- 11:26Speaker 6: That's a good question, you know. He's been trying to
- 11:28Speaker 6: come up with the answer a long time. No rumbles informans,
- 11:30Speaker 6: don't know anything. I get it.
- 11:34Speaker 5: Ought off that Friday, Yes, ma'am, Well maybe we can
- 11:38Speaker 5: help you.
- 11:39Speaker 6: Yes ma'am. Uh, well yes, well could we meet you?
- 11:44Speaker 6: Oh no, ma'am, you won't be involved.
- 11:46Speaker 7: Yo.
- 11:46Speaker 6: What's that address again?
- 11:49Speaker 5: Yeah, yes, ma'am, we'll be there.
- 11:52Speaker 6: What about ten minutes? What's that no, ma'am, just my partner. Yes,
- 11:56Speaker 6: that's right, all right, see you the right good bye?
- 12:01Speaker 6: Oh maybe this is a break. It was a woman
- 12:03Speaker 6: she wouldn't give us her name. She said that wasn't important.
- 12:05Speaker 6: She wants us to meet her. What about something to
- 12:06Speaker 6: do with use cars. Ten ten am, Frank and I
- 12:14Speaker 6: left the office and drove to Hollywood to meet the
- 12:15Speaker 6: woman who called in. She said that she wanted to
- 12:17Speaker 6: meet us in one of the coffee shops along Vine Street.
- 12:20Speaker 6: We drove out the new Freeway to Hollywood Boulevard and
- 12:22Speaker 6: then down to Vine Street.
- 12:23Speaker 5: We parked the car and walked up to the coffee shop.
- 12:26Speaker 6: The girl on the phone had refused to give us
- 12:27Speaker 6: her name, so Frank and I had no way of
- 12:29Speaker 6: knowing what she might be. She told me to take
- 12:31Speaker 6: a booth at the back of the restaurant and she'd
- 12:32Speaker 6: find us. Frank and I said, I don't order to
- 12:35Speaker 6: cup of coffee, and we waited. There was no sign
- 12:37Speaker 6: of the caller. Eleven am, she still hadn't shown up.
- 12:41Speaker 6: They're about ready to leave when a tall woman, well
- 12:43Speaker 6: dressed in their middle thirties came in. She stopped at
- 12:46Speaker 6: the door and looked around the place, and then she
- 12:47Speaker 6: headed for our booth. Suh, that might be now she's
- 12:51Speaker 6: heading for the next booth.
- 12:53Speaker 8: I do from the police. I knew a policeman. Oh
- 12:57Speaker 8: what nice are you from the cops? Yes, ma'am, I'm
- 13:04Speaker 8: the one who caught and told you to meet me here.
- 13:06Speaker 6: Yes, ma'am, I'm Joe Friday. This is my partner, Frank Smith.
- 13:08Speaker 8: You got some way to prove it, ma'am. Prove that
- 13:10Speaker 8: your cops. I don't want to talk to nobody who

- 13:19Speaker 6: Yes, here's mine?
- 13:20Speaker 8: Oh yeah, Oh say, that's a real nice picture. You
- 13:24Speaker 8: put on some weight, haven't you?
- 13:26Speaker 6: Do? You like shit? Down? Man? We can get started
- 13:27Speaker 6: on this. Oh yes, Now what was your name?

- 13:42Speaker 8: I'm sorry, I'm late. I got tied up.
- 13:44Speaker 6: That's all right, man. I wonder if we can get started. Well.
- 13:46Speaker 8: I was across the street waiting by the radio station, yes, ma'am,
- 13:49Speaker 8: waiting for that singer what's his name?
- 13:53Speaker 6: You know who?
- 13:53Speaker 8: I mean? The cute one with the curly hair everything.
- 13:56Speaker 8: Think of his name anyway, I was waiting for him
- 13:59Speaker 8: to come out. He's doing a s over there.
- 14:00Speaker 2: You know.
- 14:00Speaker 8: His a wonderful voice, and he's so cute.
- 14:03Speaker 6: No, what's this all about? This thing you want to
- 14:04Speaker 6: tell us?
- 14:05Speaker 8: Crazy kids in there autograph books. I couldn't even get married, miserable.
- 14:09Speaker 6: I wonder if we could get out of business here. Ma'am.
- 14:10Speaker 6: You said on the phone that you could give us
- 14:11Speaker 6: some information.
- 14:12Speaker 8: Yeah, I think I can help you out. This seems
- 14:15Speaker 8: to me that you might want to talk to this man.
- 14:16Speaker 7: What's his name?
- 14:18Speaker 8: Well, maybe I had to tell you about him first,
- 14:20Speaker 8: and then if you want to know his name, MIGHT
- 14:21Speaker 8: can tell you that.
- 14:22Speaker 5: All right, ma'am, go ahead, here's your cook, ma'am.
- 14:25Speaker 8: I thanks Might. That's good. It's cold.
- 14:32Speaker 6: Do you want to go on on? Yes, ma'am about
- 14:36Speaker 6: the man?
- 14:36Speaker 8: Oh? Yeah, Well, there's this fellow and he's got an
- 14:40Speaker 8: office in the building where I work. Where would that be,
- 14:42Speaker 8: a corner of Hollywood and Dick Street, right on the corner,
- 14:45Speaker 8: ninth floor. Elevator's always out of order, yes, ma'am. Well,
- 14:48Speaker 8: he's got this office and I see him a lot,
- 14:50Speaker 8: you know, at the elevator, maybe down at the magazine
- 14:53Speaker 8: rack and the lobby. Anyway, I se him a lot. Well,
- 14:55Speaker 8: about a week ago he asked me for a date,
- 14:57Speaker 8: just like that, come up to me while I was
- 14:59Speaker 8: looking at TV side Parade. That's the magazine all about
- 15:03Speaker 8: television starts, where they work, what they're like, all interesting
- 15:06Speaker 8: things like that, like do they like garlic? And what
- 15:09Speaker 8: kind of not? Do they using their ties? All interesting
- 15:11Speaker 8: things like that.
- 15:13Speaker 6: So this man ask you for a day?
- 15:14Speaker 8: H came out just like brass and asked me out. Well,
- 15:18Speaker 8: first off, I was kind of flattered. You know, he's
- 15:21Speaker 8: pretty nice. That's nice car andals And I told him
- 15:24Speaker 8: I couldn't go out with him. And then I told
- 15:26Speaker 8: him that I thought he should be ashamed of himself.
- 15:28Speaker 8: I told him he should be ashamed of himself.
- 15:31Speaker 6: Yes, ma'am.
- 15:32Speaker 8: Sure, see I know he was married, nice little wife,
- 15:36Speaker 8: real cute. I saw a couple of times around the building. Lately,
- 15:39Speaker 8: she hasn't done too well, you're real cute. Imagine him
- 15:43Speaker 8: asking me out and him a married man.
- 15:45Speaker 6: Well, yes, ma'am, but why do you think that the
- 15:46Speaker 6: police might be interested in him?
- 15:48Speaker 8: I'm coming to that. That was good. Well, I kind
- 15:56Speaker 8: of checked around, you know, to see what this guy
- 15:58Speaker 8: did and what business he was in. Yes, used to
- 16:00Speaker 8: use car business, sells old cars. I see, that's it,
- 16:04Speaker 8: sells used cars in an office building, not even a
- 16:06Speaker 8: lot nothing. There's a glass door.
- 16:09Speaker 6: Is there any lettering on it? Yeah, it's not about.
- 16:12Speaker 8: That too, but there isn't. No, that's all he's got
- 16:14Speaker 8: just this little tiny office desk and a couple of chairs,
- 16:17Speaker 8: glass door.
- 16:18Speaker 6: Well, ma'am, there's nothing illegal in that, you know.
- 16:20Speaker 8: Oh yeah, but he doesn't have a license. No, sir,
- 16:23Speaker 8: he doesn't have a license. I work for a lawyer
- 16:26Speaker 8: alphabetical filing and jeta. Oh. I asked my boss if
- 16:29Speaker 8: you didn't have to have some kind of license to
- 16:30Speaker 8: sell cars in my boss, as you do. This man
- 16:33Speaker 8: doesn't have one, goes out and buys these old cars
- 16:35Speaker 8: and then fixes them out and sells them, and he
- 16:37Speaker 8: doesn't have a license. Not only that, the many sells
- 16:40Speaker 8: the cars too.
- 16:42Speaker 7: Why do you say that, because I do.
- 16:44Speaker 8: That's why he's coming in the office and sit there
- 16:47Speaker 8: and talk and talk and then they leave. I've been
- 16:48Speaker 8: in the hall sometimes and they laugh and they're real
- 16:50Speaker 8: spooky guys, real.
- 16:51Speaker 6: Spooky what's the matter me, ma'am.
- 16:54Speaker 8: It just came in. Remember the kind of blonde are
- 16:56Speaker 8: you seem?
- 16:57Speaker 6: Yes, ma'am.
- 16:58Speaker 5: What about him?
- 16:58Speaker 8: Isn't that?
- 17:00Speaker 7: Oh?
- 17:01Speaker 8: What's his name? I know it as well I know
- 17:03Speaker 8: my own. He starts in all those space things, you know,
- 17:05Speaker 8: like the Saturn saga and the Martian Maniac that was
- 17:07Speaker 8: on last week. And this saw that one that just
- 17:09Speaker 8: came in. Well, he had one was kind of suit,
- 17:12Speaker 8: all covered with lights of spacesuit. Was so cute.
- 17:15Speaker 6: Yes, well, if you'll tell us the name of the
- 17:17Speaker 6: man in your building, you'll check on him.
- 17:18Speaker 8: Oh there's more to this story, ma'am, there's more.
- 17:21Speaker 7: I'm not finished.
- 17:22Speaker 6: Would you like to sit down and go on? Oh?
- 17:24Speaker 8: Yeah, Well, day boy. Yesterday, I'm standing by the elevator
- 17:30Speaker 8: and one of this man's customers come out of the
- 17:32Speaker 8: office and he walked over the elevator. He reached into
- 17:35Speaker 8: his pocket and took out a cigarette, kept the pack
- 17:37Speaker 8: up here in the pocket up here, you know, here
- 17:39Speaker 8: with a handkerchief. Well, when he pulled a pack out,
- 17:42Speaker 8: he dropped a little package fell around on the floor,
- 17:44Speaker 8: and he didn't see it right away. He got into
- 17:46Speaker 8: the elevator and went down and I went over and
- 17:48Speaker 8: picked it up, a little tiny thing, got it right
- 17:51Speaker 8: here in my purse. I was going to give it
- 17:54Speaker 8: to the man, and then I thought maybe I better
- 17:56Speaker 8: come to you. And I saw a picture of a
- 17:58Speaker 8: thing like this in the newspaper. Here it is. Can
- 18:01Speaker 8: you just look at that? There? You see?
- 18:06Speaker 5: Yes, ma'am?
- 18:07Speaker 6: What is it? Just approly.
- 18:14Speaker 5: Eleven forty am.
- 18:15Speaker 6: We continued to talk to the woman. She gave us
- 18:17Speaker 6: the name of the man who ran the used car
- 18:19Speaker 6: agency in her building, Ralph Holland. She also gave us
- 18:22Speaker 6: a description of him and a description of the man
- 18:23Speaker 6: she'd seen dropped the narcotics. We went back to the
- 18:26Speaker 6: office and checked the name through R and I. Holland
- 18:28Speaker 6: had a record listing one arrest on suspicion of violation
- 18:31Speaker 6: of the State Narcotic Act. The date of the arrest
- 18:33Speaker 6: was August seventeenth, nineteen thirty seven. He'd been released for
- 18:36Speaker 6: lack of evidence. We checked the name in the phone
- 18:39Speaker 6: book and came up with a business and a residence address.
- 18:41Speaker 6: He lived with his wife in a large track out
- 18:43Speaker 6: in the San Fernando Valley. One fifteen pm, Frank and
- 18:47Speaker 6: I drove out to talk with Holland's neighbors. They told
- 18:49Speaker 6: us that the family was known and respected throughout the area.
- 18:52Speaker 6: None of them could recount any actions that might cause suspicion.
- 18:55Speaker 6: They told us the Hollands had lived in the house
- 18:57Speaker 6: for the past five years, but that Missus Holland had
- 18:59Speaker 6: said that the family was planning to move into town.
- 19:02Speaker 6: From the neighbors, we found out that Missus Holland was
- 19:04Speaker 6: a semi invalid and rarely left the house. We called
- 19:07Speaker 6: the office and arrange for a stake out on the house,
- 19:09Speaker 6: and then we drove back into Hollywood to talk with
- 19:11Speaker 6: Holland's business associate. From them, we got the same story.
- 19:14Speaker 6: Ralph Holland was a respected member of the community and
- 19:17Speaker 6: was a member of several civic clubs. None of his
- 19:19Speaker 6: friends could tell us much about his business activities. We
- 19:21Speaker 6: did learn, however, that many of his friends couldn't figure
- 19:24Speaker 6: how the family could live at the scale that they did.
- 19:26Speaker 6: They said that Holland had a good business, but they
- 19:28Speaker 6: couldn't see how he could afford the new cars that he.
- 19:30Speaker 5: Drove for the new house he was planning to move into.
- 19:33Speaker 6: By forty six pm, we checked back into the office
- 19:35Speaker 6: and talked with Captain Nelson. It should take us a
- 19:37Speaker 6: couple of days to get the information back from the banks. Yeah.
- 19:40Speaker 6: In the meantime, I got a lot of walk in
- 19:41Speaker 6: the do It's going to be tough. Don't Skipper say
- 19:43Speaker 6: we could have all the help we needed. You've get
- 19:45Speaker 6: in touch with narcotics. Yeah, I called him this morning.
- 19:47Speaker 6: They'll give us a hand. Yeah, that's duty, isn't it.
- 19:49Speaker 6: What do you mean, Well, we said the guys Gilly
- 19:52Speaker 6: looks good for it. Not a big Job's got to
- 19:54Speaker 6: prove it.
- 20:06Speaker 3: You are listening to Dragnet, the authentic story of your
- 20:09Speaker 3: police force in action. Years ahead of them all.
- 20:14Speaker 4: Chesterfield is years ahead of all cigarettes. Chesterfield quality is highest.
- 20:20Speaker 4: Here's the proof. Recent chemical analyzes give an index of
- 20:24Speaker 4: good quality for the country's six leading cigarette brands.
- 20:27Speaker 7: The index of good.
- 20:28Speaker 4: Quality table, which is a ratio of high sugar to
- 20:31Speaker 4: low nicotine, shows Chesterfield quality highest.
- 20:35Speaker 3: Chesterfield Quality highest.
- 20:37Speaker 4: Fifteen percent higher than its nearest competitor, Chesterfield Quality highest
- 20:41Speaker 4: thirty one percent higher than the average of the five
- 20:45Speaker 4: other leading brands. Don't you want to try a cigarette
- 20:48Speaker 4: with a record like this?
- 20:49Speaker 3: Chesterfield first, with premium quality and best for you try
- 20:55Speaker 3: Chesterfield Today regular or king size.
- 21:09Speaker 6: Friday July thirty first, the leg work started. Two teams
- 21:13Speaker 6: of men were assigned for model theft detail to help us,
- 21:15Speaker 6: and Narcotics sent two more teams to work with us.
- 21:17Speaker 6: For the next three weeks, Ralph Holland was kept under
- 21:19Speaker 6: twenty four hour surveillance. A stakehout was maintained on his
- 21:22Speaker 6: house and on his office. His business records were checked.
- 21:25Speaker 6: From these, we came up with an estimate of what
- 21:26Speaker 6: the suspect's income was. Then we began to check his expenditures.
- 21:30Speaker 6: As a result, we found that he had control of
- 21:32Speaker 6: at least two hundred and fifty thousand dollars that his
- 21:34Speaker 6: business could not account for. Everyone who visited the Hollands,
- 21:37Speaker 6: either at their home or at his office, was checked on.
- 21:40Speaker 6: Among his visitors we found several known narcotic dealers. The
- 21:44Speaker 6: auto thefts continued, but by now the code system had
- 21:46Speaker 6: begun to work. From July thirty first to August twenty fifth,
- 21:49Speaker 6: sixteen cars were stolen that we attributed to Holland's operation.
- 21:52Speaker 6: All of them were recovered between Los Angeles and the
- 21:55Speaker 6: Mexican border. All of the drivers of the cars were
- 21:57Speaker 6: taken into custody, but none of them could give us
- 21:59Speaker 6: any information and to aid us in obtaining a conviction.
- 22:02Speaker 6: During that time, Hollan didn't make any attempt to handle
- 22:04Speaker 6: any narcotics. A dictograph had been placed in his office
- 22:07Speaker 6: and all of his conversations were monitored, but nothing incriminating
- 22:10Speaker 6: was said. We got the address of the new home
- 22:13Speaker 6: the suspect had bought, and a complete set of listening
- 22:15Speaker 6: equipment was installed there. From the time the couple moved
- 22:18Speaker 6: into the house, their conversations were monitored twenty four hours
- 22:21Speaker 6: a day. The recordings were played for Captain Nelson, Captain
- 22:24Speaker 6: Shi of Narcotics Division, for the men from the District
- 22:26Speaker 6: Attorney's office. They agreed that there wasn't enough evidence to
- 22:29Speaker 6: issue an indictment. Friday, August twenty eighth, Frank and I
- 22:33Speaker 6: checked into the listening post. I might as well sit down, Frank.
- 22:36Speaker 6: We got a long night. It's gonna be better with
- 22:38Speaker 6: a speaker. Fella's downtown putting a speaker. See cairphones got
- 22:41Speaker 6: too heavy. Oh yeah, I was talking to Guy Anderson.
- 22:43Speaker 5: He was out here.
- 22:44Speaker 6: Said by the time he said, with those things in
- 22:45Speaker 6: your head for a couple of hours, feels like somebody
- 22:47Speaker 6: shot your ears fullonovagain and speaker's better man as it's
- 22:50Speaker 6: easier too, No better turned on? Yeah, hallam, come home? Yeah,
- 22:55Speaker 6: just walked in for we got here. There they come.
- 23:01Speaker 9: How about to drink you?
- 23:02Speaker 6: Oh, I'll fix it. Yeah, one take trip with me.
- 23:08Speaker 9: We're too Oh man, we drive outside. You know if
- 23:12Speaker 9: you're not going to Mexico. Oh, I got it, honey,
- 23:14Speaker 9: and anybody else that's in it. Thing's been rough lately,
- 23:17Speaker 9: been picking the boys up as fast as I can
- 23:18Speaker 9: find it. Why did you call it quit? You've made enough?
- 23:23Speaker 9: Just about do that, honey. That's the last trip. I'm
- 23:25Speaker 9: glad of that.
- 23:26Speaker 7: Honey.
- 23:27Speaker 9: I don't like it.
- 23:28Speaker 8: Maybe I'm just getting jittery, but I swear there's been
- 23:30Speaker 8: men watching the house.
- 23:32Speaker 9: Good drink. Oh, you're just getting jumping. There's anybody watching,
- 23:38Speaker 9: and anybody who knows about it, they're not too sure anymore.
- 23:42Speaker 9: It's nothing to worry about. We're clean. This is the
- 23:44Speaker 9: last trip. After that, we call it quits. Okay, be glad.
- 23:47Speaker 9: When it's over, you go with me. That'll be good
- 23:52Speaker 9: for you. Get out of the house, see the country,
- 23:54Speaker 9: get you over this case of nerves.
- 23:55Speaker 6: You've got.
- 23:56Speaker 8: It might be kind of nice to that.
- 23:59Speaker 9: Sure, the best thing in the world for you to
- 24:01Speaker 9: see some new thing.
- 24:03Speaker 6: When do you think it goes?
- 24:05Speaker 9: Oh, I'm gonna take up the car in the morning early.
- 24:07Speaker 9: I thought we'd get away about eight and stay down
- 24:09Speaker 9: there for a couple of days and get back to Tuesday.
- 24:12Speaker 9: Take our time, have a few left. Let's go pick
- 24:15Speaker 9: up the car. Name Jimmy. We're gonna meet him halfway
- 24:18Speaker 9: just outside of DeLamar. I'll take the car from there.
- 24:22Speaker 9: I'll be glad when thank you I can see you, honey.
- 24:25Speaker 9: I'll give you my word tomorrow. That's the end of it.
- 24:28Speaker 6: Well, let's hope he's not kidding. The following morning, at
- 24:36Speaker 6: six thirty am, Frank and I, along with the men
- 24:38Speaker 6: from Narcotics Division, we're parked down the street from the
- 24:41Speaker 6: Holland home. At eight thirty six am, we saw the
- 24:43Speaker 6: couple come out of the house and get into Ralph
- 24:45Speaker 6: Holland's car.
- 24:46Speaker 4: They drove out to supervid of Boulevard.
- 24:48Speaker 6: And he turned south. All units of the state Police
- 24:50Speaker 6: have been notified to watch for the car. Members of
- 24:52Speaker 6: the Sheriff's Department were stationed along the road just outside
- 24:55Speaker 6: Del mar if we could take Holland into custody while
- 24:57Speaker 6: he was in the possesion of a stolen car and
- 24:59Speaker 6: confro him with the stories of the two suspects we
- 25:01Speaker 6: picked up earlier, George Summers and Harry Sloan. We thought
- 25:04Speaker 6: that there was a good chance that he might confess.
- 25:06Speaker 6: In any event, we'd be able to bring him to
- 25:08Speaker 6: trial on the grand theft auto charge. The meet was
- 25:11Speaker 6: made with the man who'd stolen the car as scheduled,
- 25:13Speaker 6: and Hollan started to drive south to the border. Men
- 25:16Speaker 6: from the Sheriff's department took the thief into custody and
- 25:18Speaker 6: we followed Holland. About four minutes later, we pulled the
- 25:21Speaker 6: car over to the side of the road in front
- 25:22Speaker 6: of a small coffee stand. He and his wife got
- 25:24Speaker 6: out of the car and they went into the place.
- 25:25Speaker 6: We drove by, and then we doubled back and parked
- 25:27Speaker 6: about one hundred yards up the road from the stand.
- 25:30Speaker 6: Al let's go, the boy should be around back by now, Yeah, right,
- 25:34Speaker 6: come on now at the end of the counter.
- 25:40Speaker 5: Yeah you, Ralph Holland.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Yes, what do you want?
- 25:45Speaker 6: You're driving at green View Wick out there? Yeah, So
- 25:47Speaker 6: what what if we'd see the registration papers on the car.
- 25:50Speaker 6: What poor police officers, we'ld like see the.
- 25:57Speaker 7: What are you doing?
- 25:58Speaker 8: Ride ahead like that? We weren't doing anything.
- 26:00Speaker 6: You got no rhyme on home? Quite a little rough.
- 26:04Speaker 6: We didn't call it.
- 26:04Speaker 5: You did right, hands it back, you stand still? How
- 26:09Speaker 5: about it?
- 26:10Speaker 6: He's clean.
- 26:10Speaker 8: You guys love and nerve to come in here beat
- 26:12Speaker 8: him up like this.
- 26:14Speaker 5: I don't worry about it.
- 26:15Speaker 7: Somebody had to, but there wasn't anybody that knew, nobody
- 26:17Speaker 7: at all. How'd you find out?
- 26:18Speaker 6: All right? Come on, it's perfect the way around?
- 26:21Speaker 7: Where'd I go sour? When I make the mistake?
- 26:23Speaker 6: When you started?
- 26:32Speaker 4: The story you have just heard is true. The names
- 26:35Speaker 4: were changed to protect the innocent.
- 26:37Speaker 3: On January fourteenth, trial was held in Department eighty nine,
- 26:40Speaker 3: Superior Court of the State of California in and for
- 26:43Speaker 3: the County of Los Angeles.
- 26:44Speaker 7: In a moment, the results of that trial.
- 26:46Speaker 4: Now here is our star, Jack Webb.
- 26:49Speaker 6: Thank you, George Fannaman. Next time you buy cigarettes, I
- 26:51Speaker 6: wish you'd kind of keep us in mind and remember

- 27:23Speaker 3: grand theft auto.
- 27:24Speaker 2: His wife, Mildred R.
- 27:25Speaker 3: Holland, was tried and convicted of one count grand theft auto.
- 27:29Speaker 3: Seven other members of the gang were apprehended and brought
- 27:31Speaker 3: to trial on the same charges. They all received sentences
- 27:34Speaker 3: as prescribed by law. Grand theft auto is punishable by
- 27:38Speaker 3: imprisonment in the State penitentiary for a period of not
- 27:40Speaker 3: less than one or more than ten years. Four suspects
- 27:44Speaker 3: were apprehended and tried on charges of violation of the
