- 0:00Yeah, it was so awesome. It was really great to have them
- 0:02out at the Race Shack. Some of us or some of them have
- 0:04never been to a drag ship, let alone actually been on the drag
- 0:08strip. So had a great time.
- 0:10And the driver I was with, Tanner Holmes, did an amazing
- 0:14job. He actually won the race and the
- 0:16reaction to average reaction time almost won the burnout
- 0:19contest, but it was close. So he did a stellar job.
- 0:23It was really fun getting to coach him through that process.
- 0:26Listen, amazing, great dollar control, just an overall great
- 0:29driver and I was just so excited to show them the ropes.
- 0:32So for all the rookies out there, when it comes to, you
- 0:35know, top field racing, give me a little rookie test.
- 0:38What is it like with the reaction time?
- 0:39You know the timing lines, you know that I'm.
- 0:42Of course I'm forgetting now the name of the.
- 0:45Pre stage and. Stage, stage.
- 0:47That just goes to show, you know, my inexperience, but take
- 0:50all the fans. So, you know, might not have
- 0:51experienced that like me through a weekend here at the NHRA
- 0:54series. Yeah.
- 0:55You know, there's so much more than just going in a straight
- 0:58line. You have a lot of strategizing
- 1:00as a driver. Crew chiefs have a lot of
- 1:02strategy, of course, setting up the race car to go up and down
- 1:05the racetrack, whether it's a 70° track or 150° racetrack,
- 1:09Huge, huge, huge tune up changes that go into those differences
- 1:14between the tracks from what we were doing today.
- 1:16It was a lot of strategy. So the race cars are very evenly
- 1:20matched. They're going to go down the
- 1:21racetrack every time for the most part.
- 1:23So it's not necessarily exciting the race car up.
- 1:25It's how you prepare before you hit the gas.
- 1:27So in this case we were talking about burnouts.
- 1:30We want to do a cool burnout just because that's really fun
- 1:32and cool burnouts, big smoky burnout, a long distance.
- 1:36And then there's a lot of strategy when it comes to the
- 1:38Christmas tree. You have your pre stage bulbs,
- 1:40you have your stage bulbs, you can go deep so you can roll in
- 1:43past stage and what they call it put the top bowl about, which
- 1:47means you roll in further. It makes your reaction time
- 1:49better, your ET worse. So it's kind of a game of what
- 1:52do you want to play? And you know, me and Tanner had
- 1:55a great time of discussing strategy, what he felt he wanted
- 1:59to do versus, you know, some other options.
- 2:01So just had a great time working with him and he was very
- 2:03receptive to all of the different strategies and it was
- 2:06a just a overall great, great crossover.
- 2:08I heard you and Tanner talking about, hey, races aren't one on
- 2:11track on the weekend, they're one on the shot preparation
- 2:13wise. Just tell me a little more about
- 2:15what goes into preparation on a race weekend, especially when
- 2:18you're going to a track that's going to be as hot and as slick
- 2:21as Firebird this weekend. Yeah, I mean, definitely, I live
- 2:23by that. Races are not one at the Race
- 2:25Shack. Yes, they technically are, but
- 2:28you win them back in the shop. And when I was talking to Tanner
- 2:30about that, I say win it back in the shop.
- 2:33What I meant by that was that was our strategizing time.
- 2:36That was what I was calling our shop time.
- 2:38And you know, I think that's a big part of of our our success
- 2:41in that race. And it's same thing that goes
- 2:43out whether you're running a junior dragster or a top field
- 2:46dragster. You know, you have to spend a
- 2:48lot of time at your shop with your parts, with your pieces,
- 2:52getting your heads put together, getting your blower set up,
- 2:55looking at the computer, looking at your data, which is what our
- 2:58Carlyle tools team does every single day.
- 3:00Our guys are working the shop every single day, you know,
- 3:04sometimes morning tonight, you know, and they work really long
- 3:07hours to get prepared to be at the racetrack and be ready every
- 3:10single run. So we're not scattering.
- 3:12We're ready and we're prepared every pass, which is what makes
- 3:16a successful team in my opinion. And you talked a lot about the
- 3:18team right there, and one of the people in your ear in your
- 3:20corner is Ron Capps, one of the best to ever do it.
- 3:22I'm curious, maybe share one of the best piece of advice that
- 3:26he's ever given you in your career.
- 3:27You know, Ron's given me a ton of advice.
- 3:30You know, he's what's gotten me to this point.
- 3:32You know, it would, none of this would be possible without Ron
- 3:34Capps believing in me. And honestly, he saw something
- 3:37in me that I didn't even know I had to be truthfully honest
- 3:40there. He he believed in me from the
- 3:44start and it never wavered. And that gave me so much
- 3:46confidence coming into this new career.
- 3:50As far as a specific piece of advice he's given me, there's so
- 3:55much it's hard to pinpoint. I mean, a couple things just
- 3:58right off the bat that comes to mind is just being myself.
- 4:01Every time I ask him how can I improve, how can I be better, he
- 4:04says just be yourself. And that's the refreshing for me
- 4:06because it's it's easy for me to be myself.
- 4:09But as far as driving the race car, don't drive over your head.
- 4:12You know, you don't want to get yourself into a bad situation
- 4:14like 340 miles an hour because things happen really fast,
- 4:17especially if it's kind of out of your comfort zone.
- 4:19You talked about Ron seeing something in yourself.
- 4:21I would love for you to just go in a little bit about your
- 4:23career, career and what that moment was where it clicked.
- 4:25You're like, first of all, I want to race.
- 4:27And then second of all, that moment you're like, man, I'm
- 4:29here and I can do this. Yeah, you know, and I've always
- 4:33wanted to race since I was born, to be completely honest with
- 4:35you, Like my dad says, he knew I was a race car driver before I
- 4:39was born because my due date was on a race weekend and I held off
- 4:42till after the race weekend. So he said I he knew I was a
- 4:45race car driver from the start. But you know, I just love the
- 4:48sport. I love everything about it.
- 4:50I love the fans. I love working on race cars.
- 4:53I truly, truly love working with tools.
- 4:56It's a passion of mine. I love fabricating.
- 4:58I love the tuning aspect. I love driving.
- 5:02I just love the sport. And and that's never wavered,
- 5:07you know, And Ron, Ron says he saw, he saw in me what he
- 5:13envisioned. Like, how do I say that?
- 5:16He saw himself in me when I drove the alcohol Funny Car and
- 5:20working on the car and my passion for the sport.
- 5:22And he, he wanted to pay it back to somebody like Don Preem did
- 5:26for him. Don Preem brought brought him up
- 5:28in the ranks when he didn't have the money to drive.
- 5:30But Don Preem believed in him and he wanted to do the same for
- 5:33somebody else. And he thought that I was the I
- 5:35was a good fit. And I tell you what, when he
- 5:38asked me to drive for him, I was totally shocked.
- 5:41I, I, I didn't, I didn't even know that I saw what he saw in
- 5:45me. I didn't, I didn't, I just
- 5:46didn't know, you know? And, but his confidence in me
- 5:49never wavered. And that gave me so much
- 5:51confidence coming into this. And I'm, he's always in my
- 5:53corner cheering my biggest cheerleader.
- 5:55So it gives me a lot of confidence.
- 5:57That's amazing. Now these next couple of
- 5:59questions, they come from Kenny Wallace and he's driven a lot of
- 6:02different cars throughout his career.
- 6:04And he wants to know from you, first of all, what is the
- 6:07experience out there in a Funny Car and you know, just some of
- 6:10the different drag cars that you've driven and, and what is
- 6:13that like from your perspective? Yeah.
- 6:14So driving alcohol Funny Car, you know, we're going 270 miles
- 6:17an hour to the quarter mile 3 speed transmission.
- 6:20We're carrying the front end close to 150 to 200 feet.
- 6:22So you're not steering it, you're just long for the ride
- 6:24until it touches down and nothing gangs you all over the
- 6:27place. So those cars are very, very
- 6:30aggressive and extremely hard to drive from the hit of the
- 6:32throttle to about 400 feet. 1st, the Top Fuel Dragster, in my
- 6:37opinion, coming from the alcohol funding car, the Top Fuel
- 6:39Dragster is actually a little bit smoother in those first 400
- 6:42feet. The front end, we don't carry it
- 6:43quite as far. Yeah, quite as far.
- 6:45Even though it hits the gas or it hits the tire harder and it
- 6:49accelerates quicker, feels a little bit smoother until we get
- 6:52to 400 feet, the engine RPM drops, the clutch locks up and
- 6:56it starts pulling massive GS and it's literally hang on along for
- 7:01the ride. And it's it's almost like kind
- 7:05of like A2 struck motorcycle. You think you're going fast to
- 7:07hiss the power band and then it just ramps up.
- 7:10It's almost like that except for you start pulling 6 GS.
- 7:13It's like an elephant standing on your chest just because of
- 7:16all the pressure on my body. Man, that is, that is insane.
- 7:20Now that leads me to my next question actually, Is there
- 7:23anything that you haven't driven yet in your career that you
- 7:26would like to drive in the future?
- 7:28I mean, I love all kinds of drag racing cars.
- 7:31I don't honestly know that I'd ever get on a Pro Stock
- 7:33motorcycle. I prefer to be in a cage.
- 7:35Although I do love motorcycles. I think I prefer to be in a
- 7:39cage. You never know, life will take
- 7:41you. I'm 21 years old, so who knows,
- 7:43but honestly, right now I'm just living a dream.
- 7:47I I haven't even thought about driving to the race cars.
- 7:49I love driving the Top Fuel dragster and but I'm very young
- 7:53in my career, so we'll see where.
- 7:54It goes, and this last question is for this weekend.
- 7:57For all the fans who are coming out to Firebird this weekend,
- 8:00what should they expect? Why should they be here
- 8:01throughout the weekend? Oh, you cannot you, you know,
- 8:05you try to explain drag racing and explain how crazy it is.
- 8:08You cannot like fully grasp it unless you're here.
- 8:11It is a see it to believe the kind of sport one race car goes
- 8:15on the racetrack. It'll set off a car alarm.
- 8:16I mean 12,000 horsepower one cylinder in these race cars is
- 8:21more powerful than an entire NASCAR engine, which is I think
- 8:24is insane. And how about two race cars side
- 8:26by side, So 24,000 horsepower on track at the exact same time.
- 8:31Every tickets a pit pass, you get to walk through the pits,
- 8:33meet your favorite drivers, get autographs, be 5 feet from the
- 8:36guys working on the car tearing apart a 12,000 horsepower
- 8:39engine. It is truly, it's like a once in
- 8:42a lifetime experience, except for you can come every single
- 8:45year and three days. It's a three day event, Friday,
- 8:48Saturday, Sunday. So it's it's an amazing event.
- 8:51And like I said, you can't really grasp it unless you're
- 8:54here. It's a see it to believe it kind
- 8:56of sport.
