- 0:05(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Hi, I'm Chris.
- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Our current series is Gentle Witnesses, sharing the
- 0:17good news at work in a way that
- 0:19actually makes sense.
- 0:21And we're at that stage of how do
- 0:23we have conversations with friends who are genuinely
- 0:25seeking, not just curious, not even just open
- 0:29to change, but actively seeking after God, trying
- 0:32to get to a point of resolution, trying
- 0:33to understand what they really believe about Jesus.
- 0:39I want to give an example from when
- 0:40I was in sixth grade.
- 0:43So up until sixth grade, I did not
- 0:44have glasses.
- 0:45And then I went into my eye appointment.
- 0:48I forget how often, maybe once a year
- 0:50I was having an eye appointment.
- 0:51And the doctor said, oh, he needs glasses.
- 0:54My mom was there too.
- 0:55So he was kind of talking with my
- 0:56mom and talking about me and the third
- 0:57person.
- 0:58He's like, he needs glasses.
- 0:59Now here's the thing.
- 1:01He doesn't realize that because he doesn't know
- 1:04what sight is.
- 1:06But once he has glasses, then he'll see.
- 1:08I was really offended.
- 1:10Like one, because he was talking to my
- 1:10mom, instead of me, he's referring to me
- 1:12in the third person.
- 1:13But two, because he's like this thing, I
- 1:14don't know what sight is.
- 1:15Like who does he think he is?
- 1:16Of course I know what sight is.
- 1:17But then when I put on the glasses,
- 1:21things were different.
- 1:22I could see the leaves on the trees.
- 1:24I could read the blackboard from the back
- 1:26of the classroom.
- 1:27I could see the texture of people's faces
- 1:29even from across the room.
- 1:31It was amazing.
- 1:32The doctor was totally right.
- 1:33I didn't know what I was missing out
- 1:34on.
- 1:36I think this is a helpful analogy for
- 1:38the idea of spiritual knowledge.
- 1:41We as Christians have some kooky beliefs, right?
- 1:44We believe a lot of really strange things.
- 1:46And one of the things that we believe
- 1:48that is actually kind of unusual to believe
- 1:51these days is we believe that spiritual knowledge
- 1:54is possible, that you can actually learn things
- 1:57about life and death, about God himself, about
- 2:02community, about suffering that are true things.
- 2:07Not just beliefs, not just points of inspiration,
- 2:12but genuine knowledge.
- 2:14Just like you can know mathematical things, and
- 2:17that helps you do math equations which can
- 2:19be applied in the real world.
- 2:20Just like you know scientific things, and that
- 2:22can help you develop responses to various situations
- 2:25in a scientific method, developing new technologies or
- 2:28medicines or things like that.
- 2:29You can also have spiritual knowledge, and that
- 2:32can help you live life in a certain
- 2:34way, in a way that actually gives life,
- 2:37and that's part of what God is doing
- 2:39in the world.
- 2:40And it's also possible to miss out on
- 2:42that.
- 2:43Now this puts us in a sticky situation
- 2:46as followers of Jesus as Christians, because it
- 2:49means that we think we know some things
- 2:51that other people don't know.
- 2:54Now it's not because we're morally better than
- 2:56other people, like this doctor who gave me
- 2:59a glasses prescription, he had glasses too, right?
- 3:02He needed just as much help as I
- 3:03did, maybe he needed more help than I
- 3:05did, wasn't that his eyes were any better,
- 3:07but he had gotten the help, right, he
- 3:09had gotten the glasses and so he could
- 3:11see well enough even to perform an eye
- 3:14test on me and to you know give
- 3:15me this prescription that I needed.
- 3:17We as Christians are saying all human beings,
- 3:20we struggle with a kind of spiritual blindness
- 3:23and it is possible to get spiritual glasses,
- 3:27it's possible to suddenly see things more clearly
- 3:30than before, and we think that we have
- 3:32gotten the glasses, right?
- 3:34We think we're wearing them because we see
- 3:36the world differently than we did before we
- 3:37started wearing them, and we're trying to put
- 3:39these teachings of Jesus into practice and it
- 3:41seems like they really work, and when we
- 3:43pray to God it seems like God is
- 3:44actually doing something in our lives, and so
- 3:46again it's not because we're better, it's not
- 3:48because there's anything special about us, it's just
- 3:50like we think the glasses are real, and
- 3:52so when we're having conversations with friends who
- 3:55are not yet followers of Jesus, we're suggesting
- 3:57to them that they could also put on
- 3:59the glasses, they could also see clearly, they
- 4:03could also know some things that they don't
- 4:04currently know.
- 4:06Now the reason that this is sticky, this
- 4:08is kind of a dicey proposition, is that
- 4:10it cuts against the grain of our pluralistic
- 4:13culture.
- 4:14We have a culture where we want to
- 4:15be inclusive of everyone, right?
- 4:17We want Muslims and Christians and Buddhists and
- 4:20agnostics and people who are spiritual but not
- 4:22religious, we all want to be one big
- 4:23happy family and be able to get along
- 4:24and do life together, and so one way
- 4:28that people often attempt to kind of make
- 4:32that big happy family dynamic work is by
- 4:34saying like well our disagreements don't really matter,
- 4:37right?
- 4:38Like yes, Christians believe one thing and Muslims
- 4:40believe another thing and maybe some agnostic people
- 4:42aren't sure you know about either set of
- 4:44beliefs, but like at the end of the
- 4:45day we all want to help people, right?
- 4:47At the end of the day we have
- 4:48a lot in common, and of course we
- 4:51do have a lot of common, at least
- 4:53a lot of us do, and it's great
- 4:54to build on things in common, but we
- 4:56also have some things that are not in
- 4:58common, and that becomes very awkward to say
- 5:01because it's like oh wait don't you want
- 5:02to be inclusive?
- 5:03Why are you focusing on differences?
- 5:05Why are you talking about things that we
- 5:06don't have in common?
- 5:07But this is simply the flip side of
- 5:09the idea that there's spiritual knowledge.
- 5:11If it's possible to know something spiritually, it's
- 5:15also possible to not know it.
- 5:17If it's possible to learn something spiritually, it's
- 5:20also possible to not learn it.
- 5:23And so in order to say like oh
- 5:25none of the differences of spiritual conviction or
- 5:27spiritual ideas matter, we would have to say
- 5:29that it's not really possible to learn anything
- 5:32meaningful in the spiritual realm.
- 5:34Because as soon as you say here's something
- 5:36meaningful that I've learned that's spiritual, then it's
- 5:40in contradiction to other ideas that would conflict
- 5:42with that.
- 5:43If Jesus teaches something specific about God, like
- 5:46that God is Father, and if that's meaningful,
- 5:49if that changes your life, there is a
- 5:51question of whether it's true or not.
- 5:53I have had conversations with Muslim friends.
- 5:56They do not teach that God is Father.
- 5:59That is not what the Quran teaches.
- 6:01That is actually a difference of conviction about
- 6:04the nature of God and how he relates
- 6:06to human beings.
- 6:08And so I'm painting with a really broad
- 6:09brush.
- 6:09Islam itself has many varieties just like Christianity.
- 6:13I'm speaking to the conversations with Muslim friends
- 6:15that I specifically have had.
- 6:16But that's my understanding of Islam in general
- 6:18is there's actually a different vision of how
- 6:20God relates to people in Islam.
- 6:22So you can't have your cake and eat
- 6:23it too, right?
- 6:24You can't say like it changed my life
- 6:26to learn that God was my father.
- 6:27Oh, but also you know that whole system
- 6:30of belief is just an imperfect cultural reflection
- 6:32within my context just like you know Muslims
- 6:35is in theirs.
- 6:36And so we don't really know like the
- 6:38ultimate unknowable reality filters down to each of
- 6:42us equally.
- 6:43Like that doesn't work.
- 6:44Either it's true or it's not.
- 6:47Now this is something that actually it doesn't
- 6:49take that much reflection to realize that it
- 6:53doesn't make sense to affirm contradictory things about
- 6:55God.
- 6:56It's just we have been so socialized to
- 6:59not press into those kind of questions, to
- 7:01not say anything that might step on someone's
- 7:03toes, to be so careful not to offend
- 7:06anyone that we feel like maybe it's not
- 7:09possible to logically think these things through.
- 7:11But actually it is possible.
- 7:13You can think through spiritual things using reason
- 7:16and logic just like you think through anything
- 7:18else using reason and logic.
- 7:20And us human beings we are not always
- 7:22reasonable and logical.
- 7:23We're gonna bring our biases and our emotional
- 7:25motivations and our blind spots to this conversation
- 7:28just like we bring that to every other
- 7:30conversation.
- 7:31But what's actually respectful of other people is
- 7:34not saying, oh your beliefs don't matter and
- 7:36my beliefs don't matter because nobody can know
- 7:38anything.
- 7:39But actually saying, oh I think that I
- 7:41can know some things and you think that
- 7:42you can know some things and those things
- 7:44both can't be true if they're contradictory.
- 7:46But I'm gonna love you and respect you
- 7:48and listen to you and maybe you can
- 7:49you know also listen and respect me and
- 7:52we can have a conversation about it.
- 7:53That's actually inclusivity.
- 7:56Inclusivity is we're gonna listen to each other
- 7:57and treat each other as human beings while
- 7:59we talk about things we disagree about, not
- 8:01pretending that disagreements don't exist.
- 8:05Okay so if you have a friend who's
- 8:07asking this question trying to figure out how
- 8:09do we understand the existence of so many
- 8:11religions, how do we understand the the claims
- 8:13of Jesus, what would it mean to really
- 8:15believe that you can know things from Jesus
- 8:17specifically that are different than what many other
- 8:19cultural and religious traditions have taught, can be
- 8:22really helpful to press into how Jesus himself
- 8:26addresses this question.
- 8:30And to get Jesus's own take on this,
- 8:32you have to go to a kind of
- 8:33obscure passage, probably not one you learned in
- 8:36church if you grew up in church or
- 8:38that gets preached on very often.
- 8:40This is when Jesus references the story of
- 8:42Jonah and the story of the Queen of
- 8:44Sheba.
- 8:45So this is from Luke chapter 11 verse
- 8:4829.
- 8:50As the crowds increased Jesus said, this is
- 8:53a wicked generation.
- 8:55It asks for a sign but none will
- 8:57be given it except the sign of Jonah.
- 8:59For as Jonah was assigned to the Ninevites,
- 9:01so will the Son of Man be to
- 9:02this generation.
- 9:04The Queen of the South will rise at
- 9:05the judgment with the people of this generation
- 9:07and condemn them, for she came from the
- 9:09ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's
- 9:11wisdom and now something greater than Solomon is
- 9:14here.
- 9:15The men of Nineveh will stand up at
- 9:16the judgment with this generation and condemn it,
- 9:19for they repented at the preaching of Jonah
- 9:21and now something greater than Jonah is here.
- 9:26Okay now Jesus is not mincing his words.
- 9:28He opens with that real zinger.
- 9:29This is a wicked generation.
- 9:32Again, why does Jesus say these things?
- 9:34Why is he so confrontational?
- 9:37Again, for him it's always about the heart.
- 9:38He's always honoring the mind but aiming for
- 9:41the heart.
- 9:41He's always trying to draw people out and
- 9:43see are they open to God?
- 9:45Are they willing to receive the reality of
- 9:48God's kingdom in their midst?
- 9:50And he's been doing things in the midst
- 9:52of the people of God, the people who
- 9:54have the Torah, who have the prophets, who
- 9:56have the wisdom writings, who should be able
- 9:57to recognize the kind of things that God
- 10:00does.
- 10:00He's been healing people.
- 10:02He's been restoring people to their families.
- 10:04He's been teaching people about the kingdom of
- 10:06God.
- 10:07He's been doing enough things for people who
- 10:09are paying attention to realize that God is
- 10:11on the move, that God is doing something
- 10:13in the ministry of Jesus.
- 10:16But then he says that this generation asks
- 10:18for a sign.
- 10:20Now he's been doing signs.
- 10:21He's been doing miracles.
- 10:22People who have been paying attention have been
- 10:24putting their faith in him but other people
- 10:25are like, ah prove it, prove it Jesus,
- 10:27give us a sign.
- 10:28And he's questioning that attitude.
- 10:30He's saying, is that really an attitude of
- 10:33openness to God?
- 10:35Or is it a demand for a sign
- 10:36that reflects the kind of closedness of heart?
- 10:39And he's saying, look, other people who didn't
- 10:41have as much data to work with, right?
- 10:45Not as many miracles, not as much kingdom
- 10:47of God breaking in as I have offered,
- 10:50they have still recognized the finger of God
- 10:52in their midst.
- 10:53So he gives these two examples from the
- 10:55Scriptures.
- 10:56One is from the book of Jonah, the
- 10:58city of Nineveh, and the other is from
- 11:00the time of Solomon, the Queen of Sheba,
- 11:02who he calls the Queen of the South
- 11:03in this passage.
- 11:06And these are both examples of non-Israelites,
- 11:08people who do not have the Torah, who
- 11:10do not have the prophets, who do not
- 11:11have the wisdom literature, who do not have
- 11:13a covenant relationship with God.
- 11:15And yet they see something happen and they
- 11:18recognize that it's God.
- 11:20In the case of the city of Nineveh,
- 11:21it's a Hebrew prophet Jonah who sent to
- 11:23them, calls them to repent of their sins,
- 11:26which included economic sins and oppression and things
- 11:28like that.
- 11:29And they do.
- 11:30They're like, we should change our ways.
- 11:32They humble themselves and God decides to spare
- 11:35the city, to forgive them of their sins,
- 11:37even though they're not Israelites.
- 11:39Something similar happens with the Queen of Sheba.
- 11:42So this is an African Queen.
- 11:44We're not totally sure where Sheba is, but
- 11:46probably somewhere in in North Africa, somewhere near
- 11:48enough for somebody to kind of get wind
- 11:50of what was going on in Israel during
- 11:52the kingship of Solomon.
- 11:54And she decides that she's kind of like
- 11:55gonna make this pilgrimage to talk with this
- 11:57king and see if he's really as wise
- 11:59as he's cracked up to be.
- 12:01And then she has this amazing statement at
- 12:02the end of she's kind of like questioned
- 12:03him, quizzed him, been impressed by his answers,
- 12:06right?
- 12:07She says this, the report I heard in
- 12:09my own country about your achievements and your
- 12:11wisdom is true, but I did not believe
- 12:14these things until I came and saw with
- 12:16my own eyes.
- 12:17Indeed not even half was told me.
- 12:19In wisdom and wealth you have far exceeded
- 12:21the report I heard, how happy your people
- 12:23must be, how happy your officials who continually
- 12:25stand before you and hear your wisdom.
- 12:28Praise be to the Lord your God who
- 12:30has delighted in you and placed you on
- 12:32the throne of Israel.
- 12:33Because of the Lord's eternal love for Israel,
- 12:35he has made you king to maintain justice
- 12:37and righteousness.
- 12:39And then in a few verses later it
- 12:40says, King Solomon gave the Queen of Sheba
- 12:43all she desired and asked for besides what
- 12:45he had given her out of his royal
- 12:46bounty.
- 12:47Then she left and returned with her retainer
- 12:49to her own country.
- 12:51Okay now what's really interesting about both of
- 12:53these cases that Jesus cites is these are
- 12:56not what we might call total conversions.
- 13:00It's not like this people of the city
- 13:02of Nineveh all moved to Israel and worship
- 13:04at the temple after Jonah comes to them.
- 13:06They stay in Nineveh and they repented because
- 13:09of this prophet of the Lord, the God
- 13:12of Israel, but it's not totally clear that
- 13:14like Nineveh totally changed their worship customs or
- 13:16their religion at that point.
- 13:18They probably kept doing what they were doing
- 13:19to a large extent even though they had
- 13:21this moment of repentance.
- 13:23Similarly it's very clear the Queen of Sheba
- 13:24goes back to her own people in her
- 13:25own land.
- 13:26It's not like that suddenly becomes this place
- 13:29of worship of the God of Israel.
- 13:31Although there's an interesting legends that have arisen
- 13:34around those lines because it's a very intriguing
- 13:36passage.
- 13:37But there's a sense in which God somehow
- 13:39is doing something in the world through Jonah,
- 13:42through Solomon.
- 13:42People who are not part of his covenant
- 13:44family recognize what's happening, open their hearts to
- 13:47it, name it for what it is, repent
- 13:50of sin in the one case, or acknowledge
- 13:52the wisdom that God has given Solomon in
- 13:54the other case.
- 13:56And then Jesus, hundreds of years later, is
- 13:58saying those people are going to rise up
- 14:00at the judgment and condemn the Israelites who
- 14:03didn't recognize that God was doing something in
- 14:05the ministry of Jesus.
- 14:07Again this is kind of cultural.
- 14:09It's not the way we're used to thinking
- 14:10about things.
- 14:11Jesus is talking about divine judgment.
- 14:13But you can see the point he's making.
- 14:15The point he's making is it's possible if
- 14:18your heart is open to see what God
- 14:20is doing in the world and it's possible
- 14:22to close your heart.
- 14:24And some people have opened their heart even
- 14:26with very little given to them and God
- 14:28has still met them.
- 14:30And you all have everything you need and
- 14:32more and your heart is still closed.
- 14:34So again he's like knocking on the door
- 14:35of these hard hearts with this statement about
- 14:37becoming judgment of God and the Queen of
- 14:39the South and the Ninevites are rising up
- 14:42at the judgment and speaking out against them.
- 14:44He's appealing to people to have softer hearts
- 14:47towards God.
- 14:49Okay so how does that help us understand
- 14:51the question of plurality and different religions and
- 14:54different cultural traditions and what God is doing?
- 14:56Well there's kind of two sides to it,
- 14:59right?
- 14:59One is that God is doing something in
- 15:01the world.
- 15:02It's not like God is unknowable.
- 15:03Spiritual knowledge is possible.
- 15:05We can get to know God through the
- 15:07ministry of Jesus Christ.
- 15:08That's what that whole passage is about.
- 15:10That people were either open or closed to
- 15:12the idea that Jesus was doing something that
- 15:14was of God.
- 15:16At the same time we see these examples
- 15:18that Jesus himself is citing of God being
- 15:21very generous and inclusive of people who don't
- 15:23check all the boxes for normally being included.
- 15:26And again it's not like these are neat
- 15:27and tidy conversions where people start worshipping the
- 15:30God of Israel regularly.
- 15:31And even so somebody was still able to
- 15:34connect with God from within their own culture,
- 15:36from within their own geographic context.
- 15:38God saw that, God ministered to them, and
- 15:41he recognized it.
- 15:42And apparently they're going to be there at
- 15:44the last judgment and they're gonna have something
- 15:46to say.
- 15:47So again there's a lot of mystery here
- 15:49but it tells us something about God's character
- 15:52doesn't it?
- 15:52That God wants people to be drawn to
- 15:55himself, that God is generous, that God can
- 15:56meet people where they are.
- 15:59So that that's kind of a hint that
- 16:00we get in the teaching of Jesus himself
- 16:02about how to understand the differences between different
- 16:05religions.
- 16:06It's not that every religious and cultural tradition
- 16:08is just totally bunk except for Judeo-Christianity.
- 16:13No no no it's that God has done
- 16:15something unique and powerful and real in the
- 16:18Judeo- Christian tradition, in the coming of
- 16:20Jesus as Messiah.
- 16:22And anybody from any cultural background can get
- 16:24in on that if they're willing to and
- 16:26God has the kind of character where he's
- 16:28gonna meet them where they're at regardless.
- 16:31Now that may raise more questions than it
- 16:33answers and scripture doesn't always clearly answer all
- 16:35of the what-if situations.
- 16:37Because again what is Jesus doing in this
- 16:39passage?
- 16:39He's appealing to what the people he's talking
- 16:42to have access to.
- 16:44He's like there are people out there who
- 16:46don't have access to what you have access
- 16:47to but you do have access to it.
- 16:50And this kind of contrasting rhetoric is used
- 16:53by the followers of Jesus as well.
- 16:55So in in the book of Acts Paul
- 16:57is going to the city of Athens, right,
- 16:59a pagan city worship of the Greek and
- 17:01Roman gods.
- 17:03And he's beginning to speak about Jesus.
- 17:05He actually doesn't even use Jesus's name but
- 17:07he just kind of says that there's this
- 17:09person that God has appointed to establish justice.
- 17:12And he says therefore since we are all
- 17:15God's offspring we should not think that the
- 17:18divine being is like gold or silver or
- 17:20stone an image made by human design and
- 17:22skill.
- 17:23In the past God overlooked such ignorance but
- 17:26now he commands all people everywhere to repent.
- 17:32Now isn't that a fascinating double-edged statement?
- 17:35In the past God overlooked such ignorance.
- 17:37So he's saying there are people who have
- 17:39worshipped idols, who have worshipped false gods, who
- 17:41have had temples set up all around the
- 17:43world in different cultures.
- 17:44And he says you know what?
- 17:45God overlooked that.
- 17:46What does that mean?
- 17:47Does that mean that God like has like
- 17:49a free pass for everybody who didn't have
- 17:51the Torah covenant?
- 17:52Like it's not totally clear.
- 17:53But it kind of lines up with what
- 17:54Jesus was saying about God's character.
- 17:57That God knows where people are at.
- 17:59He knew what they knew and didn't know.
- 18:01He's willing to overlook things that were beyond
- 18:03people's control.
- 18:04But then what's the second half of Paul's
- 18:06statement?
- 18:06The second half is, but now God calls
- 18:09all people everywhere to repent.
- 18:11As the message of Jesus goes forward there's
- 18:13an opportunity to repent, to turn to God,
- 18:16to get in on the special thing that
- 18:18God is doing through the ministry of Jesus.
- 18:21And so that's also relevant to our conversation
- 18:24with our friends.
- 18:26They may raise a question like, well what
- 18:27about somebody from a different religion?
- 18:30And that's a legitimate question and we can
- 18:31appeal to the character of God, that God
- 18:33meets people where they're at.
- 18:34But the real question is what's going on
- 18:36for that person, right?
- 18:38What's going on for you as you speak
- 18:40to your friend, right?
- 18:41Are you in a position where you can
- 18:43consider the claims of Jesus and whether they're
- 18:45true or not?
- 18:46You don't need to worry that God's gonna
- 18:48somehow mistreat every person on the face of
- 18:50the planet.
- 18:51You can respond to what God is giving
- 18:53you access to and take the next step.
- 18:58So I think we need to embody that
- 18:59double-edged reality of Jesus.
- 19:02On the one hand, yes, God is generous.
- 19:04On the other hand, God is asking whether
- 19:06you want to step into this reality right
- 19:08now in this conversation.
- 19:10God is making something knowable for you.
- 19:15And so we become agents of the knowledge
- 19:18of God.
- 19:18Not because there's anything special about us, but
- 19:20just because we've had a chance to put
- 19:22the glasses on and to see clearly.
- 19:24And it's like in these conversations we're saying,
- 19:26you have a chance.
- 19:27Put the glasses on.
- 19:28See Jesus clearly.
- 19:33Jesus, we do want to see you clearly.
- 19:36Show us how to be winsome and gentle
- 19:38and clear.
- 19:39How to disagree with grace while still holding
- 19:41to our convictions.
- 19:42How to help people grapple with the idea
- 19:44that they could really know something.
- 19:46How to help people grapple with the idea
- 19:48that they could really know you.
- 19:51Do your work in us as we do
- 19:52our work with you.
- 19:54Amen.
- 19:58Thanks for listening.
