Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / The DiCecco Daily: Guess Who Else Just Popped Up On The Eagles' Injury Report?
Transcript
- 0:10Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, and welcome into another episode of the Checo Daily.
- 0:13Speaker 1: It's Andrew DiCecco, Eagles beat reporter for InsideTheBirds.com. And apologies
- 0:19Speaker 1: for any background noise. I'm doing this on the road,
- 0:22Speaker 1: so you may hear a little bit.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Of some background noise.
- 0:26Speaker 1: But let's get to it, because the Eagles practiced on Thursday,
- 0:30Speaker 1: and there was a pretty extensive injury report yesterday. Not
- 0:34Speaker 1: practicing running back Saquon Barkley, hamstring. Wide receiver Hollywood Brown, ankle.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Safety Marcus Epps, groin. Outside linebacker Jonathan Bernard, ankle. Center
- 0:44Speaker 1: Drew Kendall, knee. Wide receiver Devontae Smith, hamstring.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Limited.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Linebacker Zach Bond, concussion. Linebacker Jihad Campbell, knee. Tight end
- 0:54Speaker 1: Dallas Goddard, knee. Tackle Fred Johnson, knee. Wide receiver Dontavion Wicks, hamstring.
- 1:02Speaker 1: a full participant, cornerback Quinion Mitchell. So let's talk about
- 1:07Speaker 1: what all this means. And Thursday is a really critical
- 1:10Speaker 1: part of the week, and to not have Drew Kendall
- 1:12Speaker 1: on the field, and that was the first player that
- 1:15Speaker 1: I was looking for when I was out there, is
- 1:17Speaker 1: troubling because the Eagles don't have a lot of bodies
- 1:21Speaker 1: there right now on the offensive line. And Drew Kendall,
- 1:23Speaker 1: by the way, has been playing pretty well despite not
- 1:27Speaker 1: having a ton of experience. So The offensive line configuration,
- 1:31Speaker 1: and look, I'm not saying that this is what it's
- 1:34Speaker 1: going to be, but it's what it looked like when
- 1:36Speaker 1: we were out there for the media-attended portion of practice.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Left tackle, Jordan Mailata. Left guard, Willie Lampkin. Center, Jake Majors.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Right guard, Tyler Steen. Right tackle, Markel Bell. There's a
- 1:50Speaker 1: lot of ways they could go with it if Drew
- 1:52Speaker 1: Kendall doesn't play, and right now it's trending in a
- 1:54Speaker 1: negative direction. But they also could put Willie Lampkin at
- 2:00Speaker 1: center and Micah Morris at left guard.
- 2:02Speaker 2: They could put Jake Majors at left guard if they
- 2:04Speaker 2: like him there.
- 2:07Speaker 1: And look, right now the Eagles are in dire straits
- 2:11Speaker 1: and they don't have a ton of healthy offensive linemen.
- 2:13Speaker 2: So looking at the roster right.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Now, they're going to have to get John Ajuku in
- 2:18Speaker 1: all likelihood on the 53 or available for Sunday in
- 2:22Speaker 1: some capacity. And the same for Jake Majors, who's on
- 2:26Speaker 1: the practice. Both players are on the practice squad, by
- 2:28Speaker 1: the way, I should say.
- 2:30Speaker 2: But Drew Kendall coming up with.
- 2:33Speaker 1: The knee puts the Eagles in a bind, especially now
- 2:35Speaker 1: that they've traded away Cam Juergens. And look, with Willie Lampkin,
- 2:43Speaker 1: I believe that he will start. It's just a matter
- 2:45Speaker 1: of where. And he gives you a... Unique player in
- 2:50Speaker 1: the sense that, yes, he's 5'11, 290. We've been over this.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Everyone knows that who's seen him out there. But it's
- 2:58Speaker 1: his technical prowess that I think I've been most taken
- 3:02Speaker 1: aback by. He's really technically sound. He has heavy and
- 3:06Speaker 1: active hands, a powerful base. He's an explosive athlete. I
- 3:11Speaker 1: like what I've seen from him in training camp. I
- 3:13Speaker 1: like what I saw in the preseason. But understand that
- 3:16Speaker 1: the regular season, when you're going against a pretty strong
- 3:19Speaker 1: defensive line in the Jacksonville Jaguars, is a totally different beast.
- 3:23Speaker 1: So for me to sit here and tell you that
- 3:25Speaker 1: he's going to excel, he's.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Going to play great, I can't say that. I won't
- 3:29Speaker 2: know until you see him out there and going after
- 3:33Speaker 2: these guys out there. But what I can tell you
- 3:36Speaker 2: is the Eagles are high on him. I know that.
- 3:39Speaker 1: You listen to Nick Sirianni speak glowingly about him. and
- 3:44Speaker 1: different teammates, especially at training camp. Jordan Davis referred to
- 3:48Speaker 1: him as a bowling ball of knives. So there's a
- 3:52Speaker 1: lot of affinity there for Willie Lampkin and what he
- 3:54Speaker 1: can provide. And tough as nails. An easy guy to
- 3:59Speaker 1: want to see do well. He has a really endearing
- 4:04Speaker 1: personality and a really fascinating story.
- 4:08Speaker 2: And he's come up through the ranks the hard way.
- 4:12Speaker 2: I drafted free agent with the Rams.
- 4:14Speaker 1: He spent last season on IR with the Eagles, never
- 4:17Speaker 1: got to see any game action.
- 4:19Speaker 2: But... the intrigue was always there.
- 4:23Speaker 1: And so I look at Willie Lampkin as, as someone
- 4:26Speaker 1: who is really weighted in the wings.
- 4:28Speaker 2: He's worked really hard.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Um, he talked about his growth coming on the mental side.
- 4:34Speaker 1: I think the wrestling background really helps them in terms
- 4:37Speaker 1: of hand placement and combating with defensive linemen. So we'll
- 4:42Speaker 1: see where he ends up going, whether it's center or
- 4:44Speaker 1: left guard, but he is a player.
- 4:47Speaker 2: That I think, um, eventually will make an impact.
- 4:53Speaker 1: And I say eventually because there might be some growing
- 4:56Speaker 1: pains first go of it. He's never started an NFL game.
- 5:00Speaker 1: And so that needs to be taken into account. But
- 5:04Speaker 1: this situation is further complicated by trading away Cam Juergens
- 5:08Speaker 1: now that Drew Kendall's battling this knee issue. We'll see
- 5:11Speaker 1: if Drew's out there on Friday. I mean, it's not
- 5:14Speaker 1: definitive that he's not going to play. It's certainly trending
- 5:17Speaker 1: in that direction, but we'll have to see what Friday reveals,
- 5:21Speaker 1: whether he's limited, if he's out there. That's positive news
- 5:24Speaker 1: for the Eagles, but I got a lot of questions
- 5:27Speaker 1: about who is Jake Majors. Okay, we've all talked about
- 5:31Speaker 1: him in training camp. I've written about him on InsideTheBirds.com.
- 5:36Speaker 1: He's Had a press scrum after one of the practices.
- 5:41Speaker 1: I spoke to him there as well. This is someone
- 5:43Speaker 1: who was on the practice squad all of last season.
- 5:46Speaker 1: He signed a futures deal and came back for another
- 5:53Speaker 1: run at it. I thought I had him on my
- 5:55Speaker 1: 53 actually as the 11th offensive lineman because I thought
- 6:00Speaker 1: he did some really good things in the second half
- 6:01Speaker 1: of training camp. picked it up after kind of a
- 6:05Speaker 1: slower start, but he played guard and he played center.
- 6:09Speaker 1: He was an acclaimed center at Texas where he set
- 6:13Speaker 1: a program record with 56 starts, really sharp-minded guy as
- 6:17Speaker 1: most centers are, well-spoken. You get the sense that he,
- 6:23Speaker 1: and this is based off of my understanding from the
- 6:26Speaker 1: pre-draft process, he just has a really good feel for
- 6:28Speaker 1: reading and diagnosing defenses and He's a smart guy. And
- 6:33Speaker 1: that experience from Texas, which is a high-level college football program,
- 6:37Speaker 1: certainly helped him. And he proved that he's durable and
- 6:42Speaker 1: tough and can battle through some things.
- 6:44Speaker 2: So.

- 8:29Speaker 3: I'm going to have to pay that I have to
- 8:31Speaker 3: replace things.
- 8:32Speaker 2: The appliance.

- 9:44Speaker 3: them know we sent.
- 9:46Speaker 1: We had a chance to speak to Jake Majors in
- 9:47Speaker 1: the locker room. We spoke to Damian Pierce, the running
- 9:51Speaker 1: back who was just signed to the 53-man roster. I
- 9:54Speaker 1: asked him, what compelled you to return to Philadelphia.
- 9:59Speaker 2: After a cut-down?
- 10:00Speaker 1: I'm sure he had other options. But he said, Nick Sirianni.
- 10:04Speaker 1: And he spoke about that he's a vibrant guy. He
- 10:08Speaker 1: loves what he does. Nick Sirianni spoke glowingly about Damian
- 10:11Speaker 1: Pierce the other day.
- 10:12Speaker 2: So it seems like that's one of Nick Sirianni's guys.
- 10:16Speaker 1: And I kind of put that in the same bucket
- 10:19Speaker 1: as a Zach Paschal from years past. Nick Sirianni still
- 10:21Speaker 1: talks about Zach Paschal. He loves Dontavion Wicks. And when
- 10:27Speaker 1: you saw him really gush over Damian Pierce and then
- 10:31Speaker 1: Damian Pierce mentioning that the reason why he wanted to
- 10:35Speaker 1: return to Philadelphia was Nick Sirianni, I think speaks volumes
- 10:40Speaker 1: to Nick Sirianni as a coach for Philadelphia. being able
- 10:44Speaker 1: to relate to his players and having a personality that
- 10:47Speaker 1: gravitates and why players want to be in Philadelphia.
- 10:51Speaker 2: I think that's really important.
- 10:53Speaker 1: But Damian Pierce stands to see his first meaningful work
- 10:58Speaker 1: in a little bit. And it's been a while since
- 11:00Speaker 1: he's really been able to find his footing. Injuries have
- 11:04Speaker 1: been an issue for him. I know that at one
- 11:06Speaker 1: point when he was with the Houston Texans, it looked
- 11:07Speaker 1: like he was ready to be their franchise running back
- 11:10Speaker 1: and it just didn't happen. But I believe you're going
- 11:14Speaker 1: to see the running back tandem of Will Shipley and
- 11:17Speaker 1: Damian Pierce. And they're going to need to add another
- 11:19Speaker 1: running back. You can't go into a game with just
- 11:21Speaker 1: two running backs. Remember, Saquon's injured with the hamstring and
- 11:25Speaker 1: Tank Bixby's on injured reserve right now. So I would imagine, well,
- 11:29Speaker 1: it has to be one of Carson Steele or Jaden Blue.
- 11:33Speaker 1: I would imagine Carson Steele would make a little bit
- 11:35Speaker 1: more sense. Only because he's been here from the beginning,
- 11:39Speaker 1: he gives you a little bit of a different body type.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Maybe he can help you in pass protection.
- 11:43Speaker 1: And I think he does give you some value, some
- 11:47Speaker 1: added value on special teams, which is going to be
- 11:49Speaker 1: a big factor with Will Shipley taking on now a
- 11:52Speaker 1: more prominent role and Will being a core four player.
- 11:56Speaker 1: So that's the running back situation right now. But on
- 11:59Speaker 1: the offensive line, as I mentioned earlier, I would imagine
- 12:02Speaker 1: that John Ajuku and Jake Majors are going to be
- 12:05Speaker 1: two players that one way or another are going to...
- 12:08Speaker 1: have to be available for the Eagles Sunday in London
- 12:10Speaker 1: because they just.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Don't have a lot of bodies. And both players give
- 12:13Speaker 2: you versatility. Jake can play center and guard. John can
- 12:17Speaker 2: play tackle, both tackle spots and guard.
- 12:20Speaker 1: And he's really more of a right tackle. I had
- 12:23Speaker 1: a good conversation with him on Wednesday, I believe it was,
- 12:27Speaker 1: about his role behind the scenes in helping prepare Markel
- 12:31Speaker 1: Bell and Willie Lampkin.
- 12:32Speaker 2: When he's on the look team, he's really.
- 12:36Speaker 1: emulating what the Jacksonville Jaguars defensive linemen do and really
- 12:41Speaker 1: trying to do a proper simulation to prepare Willie and
- 12:47Speaker 1: Markel for what they can expect. And not just those guys,
- 12:49Speaker 1: the entire offensive line. And you mentioned the breaking down
- 12:53Speaker 1: film and And really, that's a Monday and a Tuesday
- 12:58Speaker 1: thing where they go over it.
- 12:59Speaker 2: So it just goes to show you, and this is
- 13:02Speaker 2: why I.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Really like talking to and about every player on the roster,
- 13:06Speaker 1: because it goes beyond the star players. They're obviously going
- 13:11Speaker 1: to be the most critical to the team's success, but
- 13:14Speaker 1: you also have players on the practice squad and bottom
- 13:17Speaker 1: of the roster guys that all of a sudden are
- 13:19Speaker 1: thrust into more prominent roles and There's obviously an appetite
- 13:22Speaker 1: to learn more about them, and that's what someone like
- 13:25Speaker 1: John Ajuku does to help prepare the players that you're
- 13:27Speaker 1: going to see in the starting lineup on Sunday, go
- 13:30Speaker 1: out there and put their best foot forward.
- 13:35Speaker 2: There's also the wide receiver situation.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Dontavion Wicks pops up with a hamstring injury, and he's
- 13:42Speaker 1: their wide receiver one right now while Devontae Smith is
- 13:44Speaker 1: on the shelf with his hamstring injury. So where do
- 13:47Speaker 1: the Eagles go from here? Obviously, it's still really early. Well,
- 13:51Speaker 1: not really early, but it is early. They have a
- 13:53Speaker 1: Friday practice, and they still have a couple of days
- 13:57Speaker 1: until they have.
- 13:57Speaker 2: To actually play. But it is a hamstring injury.
- 14:00Speaker 1: And as I've outlined, those soft tissue injuries can be
- 14:02Speaker 1: a little fickle and creep up.
- 14:04Speaker 2: On you and linger. Sometimes when you get it, it's
- 14:09Speaker 2: the next day where you really feel it.
- 14:11Speaker 1: And he wasn't on the injury report the previous day,
- 14:13Speaker 1: so that would suggest that it crept up on On
- 14:17Speaker 1: Thursday's practice, not a good sign. We'll see what Friday's
- 14:22Speaker 1: injury report holds, but the Eagles are really light at
- 14:24Speaker 1: wide receiver. Let's take Dontavion Wicks out of the equation
- 14:27Speaker 1: for a moment. That leaves you then with Darius Cooper,
- 14:30Speaker 1: Makai Lemon, Britton Covey, and Elijah Moore. They have Eric
- 14:36Speaker 1: Azucanmo on the practice squad, who was with the Eagles
- 14:39Speaker 1: in training camp, but.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Not a lot of options to turn to there, especially
- 14:47Speaker 1: on a short week in the event that Wicks can't play.
- 14:51Speaker 1: And that's a passing game that's already struggling and trying
- 14:55Speaker 1: to really find its way right now. So to potentially
- 14:59Speaker 1: be without Dontavion Wicks is certainly troubling. But it does
- 15:03Speaker 1: seem like Dallas Goddard is trending in a positive direction.
- 15:07Speaker 2: He was limited once again with the knee injury.
- 15:11Speaker 1: And I would imagine that as long as there's no
- 15:15Speaker 1: setbacks and he can, again, be a limited participant on Friday,
- 15:20Speaker 1: that should bode well for his availability for Sunday. And
- 15:24Speaker 1: then you have to wonder what that would mean for
- 15:26Speaker 1: Zach Ertz. I just mentioned all the other players that
- 15:28Speaker 1: are probably going to have to find their way onto
- 15:30Speaker 1: the roster.
- 15:31Speaker 2: And be available for the Eagles Sunday in London tomorrow.
- 15:35Speaker 1: I mean, if you have Dallas Gower, you have Johnny Mutt,
- 15:37Speaker 1: you have EJ Jenkins, I don't know that you really
- 15:41Speaker 1: have the luxury.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Of elevating or signing Zach.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Ertz to the 53 at this point. That's not to
- 15:47Speaker 1: say that down the line, maybe next week or whatever,
- 15:50Speaker 1: when injuries clear up and you have a better idea
- 15:53Speaker 1: of where things stand, that maybe you don't revisit that.
- 15:55Speaker 1: But when you talk about having to get two offensive linemen,
- 16:00Speaker 1: another running back, potentially have to figure out wide receiver
- 16:06Speaker 1: and I guess you could also look at it and
- 16:09Speaker 1: say well if you are in fact.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Down Dontavion Wicks for the game maybe.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Adding another receiving option like a Zach Ertz could be
- 16:18Speaker 1: your answer there to kind of offset.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Hey Philly fans game day is stressful enough parking traffic
- 16:24Speaker 3: long lines we've all been there but when it comes
- 16:27Speaker 3: to your cannabis it's Camden Apothecary makes it easy. This
- 16:31Speaker 3: is the dispensary for sports fans. Just minutes outside of
- 16:35Speaker 3: Philly with plenty of free parking. You'll be in and
- 16:38Speaker 3: out fast. No hassle, no waiting. And they don't just
- 16:41Speaker 3: care about convenience. Camden Apothecary is all about the guest experience.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Their staff makes sure you feel taken care of every
- 16:50Speaker 3: time you walk in. Plus, they carry only the best
- 16:53Speaker 3: quality cannabis at the fairest price. So whether you're stocking
- 16:57Speaker 3: up for the tailgate, the watch party, or celebrating a
- 17:00Speaker 3: big win, you know you're getting the good stuff without overpaying.
- 17:05Speaker 3: They even show love to the community with specials for fans, students,
- 17:10Speaker 3: service members, and healthcare pros. Camden Apothecary, top quality cannabis,
- 17:15Speaker 3: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans 21
- 17:19Speaker 3: and up.
- 17:20Speaker 2: The positional shortage is.
- 17:24Speaker 1: I'm really fascinated to see how the Eagles go about
- 17:27Speaker 1: filling out the roster because they are awfully, awfully.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Banged up right now at this time.
- 17:34Speaker 1: We'll get a little bit more clarity Friday at practice
- 17:37Speaker 1: and then certainly when the final injury report comes out afterwards.
- 17:40Speaker 2: But we'll have to see.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Now, this is the second consecutive day that Jonathan Grenard
- 17:46Speaker 1: has not practiced. And as we understand it, based off
- 17:49Speaker 1: of Ian Rappaport's report, he was deemed day-to-day with the
- 17:53Speaker 1: ankle injury. For an edge rusher, that is a critical
- 17:57Speaker 1: injury to have. So, again, I don't know if that's
- 18:00Speaker 1: something that you want to rush him back. He's been
- 18:03Speaker 1: really productive when he's been out there in terms of
- 18:04Speaker 1: just generating pressure, and you can see the impact that
- 18:09Speaker 1: he has when he's out there. But, again, as much
- 18:12Speaker 1: as I'm sure the Eagles would love him out there,
- 18:14Speaker 1: you've got to take proper precaution when you're talking about
- 18:18Speaker 1: these kind of injuries and Well, man, we'll see. We'll
- 18:23Speaker 1: see what Friday's practice has in store. And we'll hear
- 18:27Speaker 1: from Nick Sirianni Friday morning. Right now, that's going to
- 18:32Speaker 1: do it for this edition of the Checo Daily. I
- 18:35Speaker 1: am Andrew DiCecco, and I'll catch you all on the
- 18:38Speaker 1: next one.
