- 0:07The 1942 Major League Baseball All-Star Game took place at the Polo Grounds in New York on July 6, 1942.
- 0:14While the game had been scheduled for a twilight start at 6.30, rain delayed the first pitch for an hour, leading to the first All-Star Game contest played entirely under the lights.
- 0:23The American League was managed by Joe McCarthy, who led the Yankees to the World Series over the Dodgers in 1941, two months before the attack on Pearl Harbor.
- 0:32McCarthy would send his own ace, Spud Chandler, to the mound to start the game.
- 0:36Spud had a record of 9-2 and helped the Yankees reach 50 wins and establish a four-game lead over the Red Sox by the break.
- 0:43The National League was managed by Leo DeRosier, who led the Dodgers to the first World Series appearance in over 20 years in 1941.
- 0:50Leo would send the Cardinals' Mort Cooper to the mound to face the American League.
- 0:54Cooper had a record of 11-4, trying to help the Cardinals keep pace with the Red Hot Dodgers, who were in first place with an eight-game lead at the break.
- 1:02This audio recording is from the Mutual Radio broadcast featuring announcers Bob Elson, Mel Allen, and Jim Britt.
- 1:08At this time, WGM joins the Mutual Network for the presentation of the All-Star Game, which is in progress at the present time.
- 1:20Leo DeRosier, who will guide the destinies of the National League All-Star team this year, has for outfielders such game-breaker uppers as Mel Ott, Joe Medwick, and Pete Reiser.
- 1:32Pete Reiser leading the National League in hitting with an average of.361.
- 1:36These men are fortified by Seth Stalwart's Hizina Slaughter of the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 1:41Young Willard Marshall, freshman sensation of the New York Giants, making the All-Star team even before he's completed his first year as a major leaguer.
- 1:49Then there's Terry Moore, pretty good with that willow and considered as one of the finest defensive centerfielders in the history of the game.
- 1:55And then there's Danny Lippweiler of the Philadelphia Fills.
- 1:58In the infield for the National League, there's Archie Vaughan, who hit two home runs in last year's All-Star Game, you remember, hit them in succession.
- 2:06And when he had hit his second one in the National League ahead, it looked as if Archie Vaughan would be the hero of the 1941 All-Star Game.
- 2:17It took Ted Williams' ninth inning home run, which won the game for the American League, to rob Archie Vaughan of being the hero of the 1941 Midsummer Classic.
- 2:26Then there's Jimmy Brown of the St. Louis Cardinals, a switch hitter.
- 2:29That's right or left, depending on whether a right-hander or left-hander is pitching.
- 2:33Always a dangerous little man up at that plate.
- 2:35Eddie Miller at shortstop, hits a long ball.
- 2:39Frank McCormick of the Cincinnati Reds, another long ball hitter and a good hitter.
- 2:44And, of course, last but certainly not least, one of the biggest power men in the major leagues, Johnny Mize, who's become very fond, incidentally,
- 2:51of those short right field stands here at the polo grounds since he's become a member of the New York Giants.
- 2:56The distance from home plate to the right field stands, 294 feet.
- 3:01Not a very long distance, and John has learned how to pull that ball closely, which you have to do to get them into that right field stands, and is very fond of them.
- 3:09There's a 100-foot drop away from that 294-foot sign as the wall out there fades away toward deep right field to the bullpen.
- 3:19It's a 100-foot drop so that in order to get that ball into the right field stands, you do have to learn how to pull them closely.
- 3:25The men back at that plate for the National Leagues tonight can hold their own with a bat, too.
- 3:29Walker Cooper, Ernie Lombardi, and Mickey Owen.
- 3:32And as for pitchers, looking at it from a defensive standpoint, what more could you want than such men as Morton Cooper, Whitlow Wyatt, Claude Paso, Johnny Vandermeer, Bucky Walters.
- 3:43Ray Starr and Carl Hubbell have been added to that list since Cliff Melton, who was originally scheduled to perform for the National Leagues tonight, came up with a sore arm.
- 3:51Morton Cooper's won 11 games.
- 3:53Whitlow Wyatt has won 8.
- 3:55Claude Paso has won 12 games.
- 3:57Johnny Vandermeer has won 8.
- 3:59Bucky Walters has won 9 games.
- 4:01And Ray Starr, a veteran sensation of the Cincinnati Reds, a veteran from a standpoint of age rather than service, has won 12 games.
- 4:10That group of pitchers, all in all, have won 52 games while losing only 26 among them, or an average of some 667, and that's pretty good pitching.
- 4:21Morton Cooper, who's scheduled to start for the National Leagues tonight, has appeared in 16 games for the Cardinals this year, has won 11 of them.
- 4:28He pitched 134 and two-thirds innings, allowed 88 hits, walked 37 men, and struck out 71.
- 4:33And in his string of 11 wins, there have been 6 shutouts.
- 4:38So if he certainly, if he performs up to par this evening, it's going to be perhaps a little bit too bad for those sluggers in the American League lineup.
- 4:45Of course, that is strictly conjecture.
- 4:47It remains to be seen.
- 4:49Looking at the starting lineup for the National League, Jimmy Brown, who leads off and will play second base, is a switch hitter.
- 4:55And of course, with a right-hander ready to go against them, Bud Chandler of the Yankees, Jimmy Brown will bat left-handed.
- 5:01Leo DeRosier, as a matter of fact, has for his first 6 men in the lineup all left-handed hitters playing that percentage angle of a left-handed hitter against a right-handed pitcher.
- 5:10Brown, Vaughn, Reezer, Mize, Ott, all bat left-handed.
- 5:15The first 5 hitters, I should have said.
- 5:17Jimmy Brown has a batting average of 267 to bring into the ballgame with him.
- 5:22Ike Vaughn hitting it 262.
- 5:25Pete Reezer will bring into the ballgame an average of 361 on the season.
- 5:30And Johnny Mize has come up over the 300 mark, hitting it 301.
- 5:35Mel Ott hitting it 261.
- 5:37Joe Medwick, who follows, hitting it 344.
- 5:39Walker Cooper, who will catch, hitting it 286.
- 5:42Eddie Miller batting it 270.
- 5:44And these boys are pretty good in the matter of home run production, too, to give you an idea on their slugging propensities.
- 5:50Jimmy Brown has had only one homer.
- 5:52Pete Reezer has 6.
- 5:54And Johnny Mize, the National League leader in that department, has 14.
- 5:57He'll be followed by Mel Ott, who has 12 home runs.
- 6:00And, of course, Mize and Ott are very, very accustomed to these stands here at the polo grounds, this being their home lot.
- 6:07Between them, they've hit 26 home runs this year.
- 6:10Joe Medwick has 3 home runs to his credit.
- 6:12Walker Cooper, 4.
- 6:13Eddie Miller, 4.
- 6:14So that the first 8 men in the lineup for the National League have accounted for 44 home runs between them this year.
- 6:20And the matter of runs batted in to give you an idea of the hitting strength of this National League team,
- 6:25which in the past has been noted especially for their defensive propensities.
- 6:29Jimmy Brown has batted in 43 runs.
- 6:31Archie Vaughan, 23.
- 6:33Pete Reezer, 38.
- 6:34Johnny Mize has driven in 63 runs this year, leading the National League in that respect.
- 6:39Mel Ott has driven in 44.
- 6:41Joe Medwick has driven 55 runs across the plate.
- 6:45Walker Cooper, 26.
- 6:46Eddie Miller, 25.
- 6:48And so with the first 8 men in the lineup, they have accounted in runs batted in this year, a total of 317.
- 6:55So all in all, you can see from what Jim Britt has told you and from my brief analysis of the National League lineup,
- 7:02the two teams tonight are pretty evenly matched.
- 7:05And one team cannot be said especially to have any advantage over the other one way or another in so far as pitching,
- 7:12defensive strength, or offensive strength is concerned.
- 7:15So what we shall see will be a game in which the cream of the crop for the major leagues, pretty evenly matched,
- 7:21will go to it in this tenth meeting of the National and American League All-Stars.
- 7:27All right, here's Bob Elson.
- 7:30Thank you very much, Mel.
- 7:32Well, friends, from what my two colleagues have told you, Jim Britt and Mel Allen,
- 7:36you can gather that this is going to be quite a ball game.
- 7:39We have two evenly matched squads here tonight, and it should really be a swell game.
- 7:44We're going to pause now for station identification.
- 7:47We're happy to say that our mutual stations from coast to coast have set aside their time,
- 7:51canceled programs with the cooperation of sponsors,
- 7:54so that the mutual broadcasting system could bring you an exclusive presentation of one of America's greatest classics, the All-Star Game.
- 8:01You're listening to the broadcast from the Polo Grounds in New York City.
- 8:04This is the mutual broadcasting system.
- 8:08WGN, the voice of the people, Chicago.
- 8:12Well, friends, here we are back at the Polo Grounds in New York City.
- 8:15One thing we wanted to tell you about was that the ball game tonight cannot run past 9.10 New York time.
- 8:23There's going to be a test blackout in New York tonight at 9.30, so the ball game will not run past 9.10.
- 8:30If because of any circumstances, beyond the control of everyone, there should be no ball game tonight,
- 8:35this ball game would be played here in New York tomorrow afternoon at 1.30,
- 8:39and the Cleveland game would be played in Cleveland on Wednesday night.
- 8:43In the event that something should prevent this broadcast tonight or this ball game tonight,
- 8:47it would be played here in New York tomorrow afternoon at 1.30,
- 8:51and then the Cleveland game would be set aside, would be set back just one day.
- 8:55In other words, we're anticipating a game in Cleveland tomorrow night at 9 o'clock,
- 8:58and don't forget that your mutual station will bring you that great game, and boy, that should be a classic.
- 9:03From that huge bowl, that big municipal stadium in Cleveland, your mutual station will bring you the story of that game tomorrow night at 8.45.
- 9:11Now I know that some place across the country there might be some of you fans who are tuning into our mutual broadcast late.
- 9:16The game has not started as yet. There's been a delay of a bit here,
- 9:21and I'm going to run down the batting order and line up again slowly for you.
- 9:24Some of you are perhaps keeping a scorecard on this ball game, and so we'll give it to you slowly in their teams.
- 9:30So those of you who want to keep an actual card, an actual rundown of the ball game, we'll have plenty of time to get it in.
- 9:35Let's take the home team first, the National League team.
- 9:39Jimmy Brown of St. Louis, second base.
- 9:44Archie Vaughn of Brooklyn, third.
- 9:48Petey Reiser of the Dodgers in center field.
- 9:53Johnny Mize of the Giants at first base.
- 9:57Mel Ott, the manager of the Giants, will start in right field.
- 10:01Medwick of Brooklyn, and by the way, Medwick has really been playing marvelous ball for the Dodgers this year.
- 10:07I think that Joe's comeback, although it wasn't exactly a comeback because he played good ball last year,
- 10:12but the baseball he's played this year has really been something.
- 10:16As you know, he's right up there hitting around 3.45, is driven in a flock of runs.
- 10:20He hits safely in a long stretch of ball games, and Joe's having another great year.
- 10:24Medwick will start in left field. Walker Cooper of the St. Louis Cardinals will catch.
- 10:30Eddie Miller of the Boston Braves is going to start at short,
- 10:34and Morton Cooper, the ace of the St. Louis Cardinals staff, who's won 11 ball games and lost 3,
- 10:40is going to start for the National League.
- 10:42By the way, looking over Cooper's record, we see that he won 11 games and lost 3.
- 10:47He pitched 12 complete games, and one thing you notice about Cooper's record is that he pitched 6 shutouts.
- 10:53Morton Cooper has 6 shutouts out of the 11 games he's won.
- 10:58Now turn around on your scorecard, and here is the American League starting lineup.
- 11:03Lou Badrow of Cleveland, the manager of the Indians, will start at shortstop.
- 11:08Badrow at short. Tommy Henrich of the Yankees will start in right field.
- 11:14Henrich, H-E-N-R-I-C-H, Henrich, right field.
- 11:19Williams of Boston, left field.
- 11:24Joe DiMaggio of the Yankees in center field.
- 11:28As I told you before, little Dominic of the Boston Red Sox is laid up with a bum back,
- 11:32and he's in uniform but will not play in the ball game.
- 11:35So Joe DiMaggio will bat fourth and play center field, then Rudy York of Detroit will bat fifth and play first base.
- 11:41Gordon of the Yankees, second base.
- 11:45Kenny Keltner of Cleveland, third base.
- 11:48Bertie Tebets of Detroit, that's T-E-B-B-E-T-S, Tebets will catch.
- 11:55And Spurgeon Chandler of the New York Yankees, a right-hander, who's won nine ball games and lost two, is going to pitch for New York.
- 12:01There were three fans, there were three late switches in the rosters today.
- 12:07As you know, Paul Derringer was laid up and could not take part in the ball game,
- 12:13and we also had another late withdrawal from the ball game, and that was Melton of the Giants,
- 12:18their outstanding left-hander who had a sore arm and couldn't come into the ball game.
- 12:23And so there were two other pitchers nominated, and they are Carl Hubbell of the Giants,
- 12:27who's down here in uniform for the National League, and also Starr, the great right-hander of the Cincinnati Reds.
- 12:33He was also nominated in place of Paul Derringer.
- 12:37The other nomination concerned the American League squad, and that was that Bill Dickey dropped out of the lineup
- 12:42and Wagner of the Phillies stepped into his spot.
- 12:45Wagner, as you know, is a catcher, a left-handed batter, and a very good hitter, and he stepped into Bill Dickey's spot.
- 12:50Bill has been ailing for a couple of weeks, hasn't been in the Yankee lineup, I don't think at all, until the Boston series,
- 12:55and he's not well enough to get into the ball game, and Wagner has taken his spot.
- 13:00The umpires, when the ball game gets underway, will be Ballon-Fance, B-A-L-L-A-N-F-A-N-T, of the National League, back at the plate.
- 13:09This is the National League game, this is the, National League is the home team.
- 13:15At second base will be Barlich, B-A-R-L-I-C-K, of the National League.
- 13:20At first base will be Stewart, of the American League, and at third base will be McGowan, of the American League.
- 13:29Now there you have the pitchers, there you have the umpires, there you'll have the starting lineups, and the squads.
- 13:37Al Shaq, by the way, is just walking back from center field, he's coming out here toward the infield, and the crowd's giving him a hand.
- 13:46While we have time, let me tell you something about this Polar Grounds layout.
- 13:49It's a complete double deck to fair.
- 13:51Our mutual broadcasting booth is in a swell spot here, right back at the home plate where we can see those balls break in over the plate.
- 13:57It's in a great spot to see the ball game, and there's a complete double deck all the way around the park.
- 14:03It has often been referred to as the left-hand hitter's paradise because it's just a short poke down that right field line.
- 14:09As I look down that line right now, I can see the mark is around 290 feet, which isn't very far for a good left-handed pull hitter.
- 14:16It's a little bit farther, however, down the left field line.
- 14:19It's a poke of something like 330 feet, and from there on out in the left center field to deep center field to right center field, it is a real wallop.
- 14:27In fact, it's one of the longest drives to the center field fence of any ballpark in the majors.
- 14:32Something from here to the center field wall is something like 483 feet, and that is really a wallop.
- 14:39483 feet to the center field wall, so you can tell what a poke that is.
- 14:44The only spot where the hitters get a break in this park at all, I really think, are down this right field line.
- 14:49Of course, that is the left-hand hitters, those pull hitters, who can pull that ball into those stands,
- 14:55which are only 290 feet distant here from the home plate in the ground.
- 15:01There's been an unavoidable delay here in the start of the ballgame.
- 15:06It hasn't gotten underway as yet.
- 15:08Right below me here is the American League squad.
- 15:10I might tell you, too, that all the American League players are wearing their home team uniform.
- 15:15The American League teams are the visiting team, so the American League players are wearing their road uniforms.
- 15:23And right below us here, below our mutual booth, a little bit to our left, is the Yankee team, or is the American League team.
- 15:29Joe McCarthy, who just recovered from an unfortunate illness, is back.
- 15:34I talked to him today. He looks in good shape.
- 15:36He said, Bob, we have a great squad this year, and I think we're going to beat the National League again.
- 15:40Joe is all set right in the pink for this ballgame.
- 15:43I also had a chat around noon with the fine manager of the National League squad, Leo DeRosha,
- 15:48who's done such a splendid job with the Brooklyn Dodgers.
- 15:50And he said to me, Bob, we've got the best National League team that we've had in years.
- 15:54This year we not only have National League pitching, but we're going to show those guys some hitting, too.
- 15:59And as you can see from the figures that Mel Allen has given you on the National League,
- 16:03the National League team this year does carry a lot of power,
- 16:06and anything is going to have to happen in this ballgame when it finally gets underway.
- 16:12Friends, there is going to be a delay.
- 16:15Circumstances beyond our control are going to delay the start of this ballgame.
- 16:20And so we're going to leave you here, take leave of you now for just a little while,
- 16:23stand by, however, we'll be standing by in our mutual broadcasting booth here in New York,
- 16:27ready to bring you this ballgame, the All-Star Game, play-by-play, just as soon as the ballgame starts.
- 16:33So just stay right with your mutual station, and just as soon as the All-Star Game gets underway,
- 16:39we'll bring it to you.
- 16:40And so for just a while at least, this is Bob Elson saying goodbye to you from the Polo Grounds in New York City
- 16:46and returning you to our New York studios.
- 16:50Our program service will continue in just a moment.
- 16:54This is the Mutual Broadcasting System.
- 16:57This is WGN, the voice of the people, Chicago.
- 17:00Stay tuned to WGN for the broadcast of the All-Star Game between the American and National Leagues,
- 17:05which will begin shortly from New York City.
- 17:08We rejoin the Mutual Network.
- 17:12How do you do, baseball fans across the country?
- 17:15This is Bob Elson talking to you again from the Polo Grounds in New York City,
- 17:18and we're all set now for Mutual's exclusive coverage of the 10th Annual All-Star Game.
- 17:23You hear that announcement through your radio?
- 17:27That's the public address announcer here in the Polo Grounds in New York City
- 17:31calling the official batting order and lineups around here to the people in the stands.
- 17:35He just completed it, and now I'll give you the rundown again for those of you who might be tuning in late.
- 17:40Here is the starting lineup for the National League, and the National League team will very shortly take the field.
- 17:45And then Jim Brett will describe the first three innings for you.
- 17:48Mel Allen of New York will describe the middle three, and I'll describe the last three.
- 17:53The announcer has just called the official batting order and lineup.
- 17:56I repeated it to you before. There has been an unavoidable delay,
- 17:59and the ballgame is going to start now any minute.
- 18:01And here is the lineup for the National League Brown of St. Louis at second base,
- 18:06Archie Vaughan of Brooklyn at third base,
- 18:09Petey Reiser of Brooklyn in center field,
- 18:11Johnny Mize of New York at first base,
- 18:14Mel out of New York in right field,
- 18:16Joe Medwick of Brooklyn in left field,
- 18:19Walker Cooper of St. Louis is the catcher,
- 18:22Eddie Miller of Boston is the shortstop,
- 18:25and Morton Cooper of St. Louis is the pitcher.
- 18:28His record, as we told you before, he's won 11 ballgames and lost three.
- 18:3211 of his wins have been shutouts, and he's been one of the outstanding pitchers of the year.
- 18:37You stop and figure 11 wins and 6 shutouts, you've got something.
- 18:40Here is the lineup for the American League.
- 18:45Cooper has just come out of the National League dugout,
- 18:48which is down here to the right of our mutual broadcasting booth,
- 18:51and he is going to warm up now with Ernie Lombardi.
- 18:54Ernie Lombardi of the Boston team, he's going to take a few throws,
- 18:57and the rest of the National League team is out on the field just tossing the ball around,
- 19:01not on the diamond, they're on the field, they haven't got out on the diamond as yet.
- 19:05And Cooper is going to try a few practice throws from the mound.
- 19:08He's walked out to the center of the diamond now, and here is big Ernie Lombardi of Boston,
- 19:13who is one of the reserve catchers for the National League,
- 19:15standing just back at the plate taking Cooper's practice throws.
- 19:18Here's Spud Chander of New York, who's going to start for the American League.
- 19:22He's come out, and he's going to get a few practice throws.
- 19:25Well, let's get on anyway with the American League lineup.
- 19:29Lou Badrower of Cleveland, shortstop.
- 19:32Here's another announcement.
- 19:34This game will proceed until 9.30 a.m.
- 19:39Officials contacted Mayor LaGuardia, who gave permission to carry this ballgame until 9.30.
- 19:49As you know, if you were listening to the broadcast earlier,
- 19:53there is a practice blackout here in New York tonight at 9.30.
- 19:57They had established a time as a deadline time on the game at 9.10,
- 20:02in the event of a tie at that time.
- 20:04The ballgame was to have been played tomorrow, but because of an unavoidable delay,
- 20:08the baseball time has been allowed to run until 9.30.
- 20:14So the ballgame will run until 9.30.
- 20:16Now, let's get on, shall we, with that American League team.
- 20:20Lou Badrower of Cleveland is going to play shortstop, and Lou's really been having a grand year.
- 20:26Spud Chander is also out there getting in his practice throws.
- 20:29He's standing in one side of the pitcher's mound,
- 20:32and Walker Cooper of St. Louis or Martin Cooper is on the other side,
- 20:36and both pitchers are warming up from the center of the diamond.
- 20:39The teams are not on the field.
- 20:41The players of both teams are along the playing field on the side of the foul line side,
- 20:45here to our left and to our right.
- 20:47Lou Badrower of Cleveland, I think, is having one of the greatest years of his career.
- 20:50Not only has he done a splendid job with that Cleveland ball club,
- 20:53he's really revitalized that club.
- 20:55He's had them playing great ball.
- 20:57He has the respect of his players, and he has been playing the best ball of his career.
- 21:01I talked to him in Chicago when the Indians played a series there with the Sox last week,
- 21:05and Lou played wonderful ball.
- 21:08And talking to some of the players on the Cleveland ball club,
- 21:11I know that his year so far at Cleveland has been a howling success,
- 21:14even though Cleveland's not in first place.
- 21:16So Badrower started short.
- 21:18Tommy Henrich, the dependable right fielder of the New York Yankees,
- 21:21is going to be in right field tonight.
- 21:23The alternate was Dominic DiMaggio, who they had intended starting,
- 21:26but in yesterday's doubleheader, the Boston doubleheader, Dominic hurt his back.
- 21:31And although he's in uniform here tonight, he is not going to start in the ball game.
- 21:35In left field will be Teddy Williams.
- 21:38Yesterday in Chicago I talked to Eldon Auker,
- 21:40who's won ten ball games this year for St. Louis, about great hitters.
- 21:44Auker told me that in his judgment, and he's pitched in baseball many a year,
- 21:48Williams will go down in history as one of the five greatest hitters that ever lived.
- 21:52I asked him, what was it that made Williams such a great hitter?
- 21:55He said, Bob, the thing that makes Williams the great hitter that he is,
- 21:58is the fact that he can hit these kind of specialty pitches,
- 22:01like knuckleball, sliders and sinkers and all that sort of thing,
- 22:04right when they're in their motion.
- 22:06In other words, when a knuckleball comes in and starts its particular motion,
- 22:09Williams can hit that ball right when it's in that particular motion
- 22:13that makes the knuckleer famous, and he can drive that kind of a ball out of the ballpark.
- 22:17So those specialty pitches not only don't fool him, but he can time them,
- 22:21and he can hit those specialty pitches, and not only hit them,
- 22:23but he can drive them out of the park.
- 22:25And Auker told me, and he's a pretty good pitcher and a pretty good judge of hitters,
- 22:29that he thought that Williams would go down in history as one of the greatest hitters that ever lived.
- 22:33Now in center field is Dominic DiMaggio.
- 22:35The great DiMaggio, the famous Yankee clipper, has gotten off to a rather slow start this year,
- 22:40but he's been coming along.
- 22:42His throwing hasn't been for one thing as good this year as it has been in previous years,
- 22:46nor has his hitting been as good.
- 22:48Seeing Joe DiMaggio batting around 270 doesn't look like Joe
- 22:52because you'd expect to see him up around 350,
- 22:55but Joe just hasn't been able to get going at his regular clip.
- 22:58Of course Yankee fans and the Yankee bosses figure that Joe will get going.
- 23:02He's been in a slump before, but anyway, he's one of the greatest ball players in the game,
- 23:06and he'll be in center field.
- 23:08At first base will be the big powerhouse of the Detroit Tigers, Rudy York.
- 23:12No, he's not exactly the outstanding fielding first baseman in the American League,
- 23:16but he can knock him down, he can get in front of him,
- 23:18and what is more, he can really powder that baseball.
- 23:21Yes, sir, that big boy can really sock that ball,
- 23:24and his big bat will come in handy in that American League lineup tonight.
- 23:29Now at second base is one of the greatest ball players in the game, Joe Gordon.
- 23:33If there's anything that a great second baseman should do that this fellow cannot do,
- 23:37I don't know what it is.
- 23:39I was talking to one of the greatest men in baseball, Connie Mack, last year.
- 23:42Mr. Mack told me that he thought that Gordon was one of the greatest second basemen he'd ever seen,
- 23:47and that was enough for me.
- 23:49At third base will be Kenny Keltner, the outstanding third baseman of the Cleveland Indians.
- 23:54The catcher is going to be Bertie Tebbitz.
- 23:58Here's an announcement.
- 24:02It's about the Test Blackout.
- 24:05If you couldn't hear the announcement, the public address announcer was telling the fans that the Blackout,
- 24:26the Test Blackout here in New York tonight is going to start at 9.30,
- 24:29and the ballgame had previously planned to end at 9.10, regardless of what stage the game was in.
- 24:34But now, because it's been late getting started, they're going to run it down until the actual Blackout time,
- 24:39and the customers and fans here in the stands have been asked to remain in their seats.
- 24:43We've gotten as far as the catcher, Bertie Tebbitz, who's going to be back at the plate in place of Bill Dickey,
- 24:47the old workhorse of the Yankees and one of the greatest catchers in the game.
- 24:50Tebbitz is a fine catcher, and he's a good hitter.
- 24:53And the pitcher tonight is going to be Spurgeon Chandler, a very fine right-hander of the New York Yankees,
- 24:58who has had a fine record this year.
- 25:00The pitchers in the American League are Chandler, Bonham, Ruffing, Benton, Newhauser, Euson, Bagby, Hudson, and Eddie Smith.
- 25:08The pitchers for the National League are Morton Cooper, Whitlow Wyatt, Carl Hubbell, Passau, Van Dammeer,
- 25:15Walters, and Ray Starr of Cincinnati.
- 25:18There's been two changes.
- 25:20Melton was dropped off the squad today because of a sore arm, and Carl Hubbell was substituted.
- 25:25Derringer was also out because of an injury, and Starr of Cincinnati was substituted.
- 25:30There was one substitution on the American League squad today, and that was Bill Dickey dropped off,
- 25:34and Wagner was substituted, and now fans were all set for the All-Star game.
- 25:39The teams are going onto the field. The umpires are coming out.
- 25:42The 10th annual All-Star Ballgame is going to be brought to you exclusively by the mutual broadcasting system.
- 25:47The umpires have just walked up to the plate.
- 25:49The National League team has gone out onto the field,
- 25:52and I'm going to turn our microphone over now to my good friend Jim Britt of the Yankee Network,
- 25:57who will talk to you just as soon as you hear our national anthem.
- 26:01The National League team is coming out onto the field.
- 26:26The National League team is coming out onto the field.
- 26:42The National League team is coming out onto the field.
- 27:03Good evening again, everyone.
- 27:13This is Jim Britt about to bring you the first three innings play-by-play of the 10th All-Star game.
- 27:18As you know, the previous record is six victories for the American League, three for the National Leaguers,
- 27:23and at the moment, there goes the official starting ball being given to Morton Cooper.
- 27:28The rosin bag has already been handed in by the Brooklyn Bat Boy,
- 27:31who is the home bat boy for the National Leaguers,
- 27:33just as the Yankee bat boy is the host of the evening as far as the visiting American Leaguers are concerned.
- 27:39Walker Cooper is the catcher, and his brother Morton Cooper is on the mound.
- 27:44Recently, on the occasion of an Army-Navy relief game at Braves Field in Boston,
- 27:48attended by more than 25,000 fans, Morton Cooper came within two bloopers,
- 27:53two accidental base hits, you might say, of pitching a near-perfect ball game.
- 27:58In addition to that, he gave one walk. That was his third consecutive shutout.
- 28:02Later, that streak was broken.
- 28:04Here is the starting plate umpire, Lee Ballenfant, coming over to talk with manager Joe McCarthy of the New York Yankees
- 28:10about some matter pertaining to the game itself.
- 28:13At first base will be Ernie Stewart of the American League.
- 28:16At second base, the colorful Al Barlich of the National League.
- 28:19And at third base, Bill McGowan of the American League.
- 28:22The first man up will be manager Lou Boudreau of the Cleveland Indians.
- 28:25He bats right-handed, has a season's batting average of 302.
- 28:29This is his first year as a skipper, the youngest skipper the American League has seen.
- 28:34He has seven doubles, seven triples, and a single home run since the start of the season.
- 28:39He is one of the most famous athletes in the history of the University of Illinois.
- 28:42He was a great basketball player.
- 28:44His opponents in the Middle West, especially in the Western Conference,
- 28:47insist to this day that great as he is in the diamond world, he was an even greater All-American cage star.
- 28:53There's the roar as Boudreau, who has quite an unorthodox batting stance, starts his position.
- 28:59Artie Fletcher is coaching at third base, and at first base is Bucky Harris,
- 29:03the manager of the Washington Senators.
- 29:05Boudreau crouches, the outfield is just about straight away.
- 29:07Here's the first pitch, and it is ball one.
- 29:11One ball and no strikes to count.
- 29:13The infield is back on the left side.
- 29:15Archie Vaughan is playing just about five feet away from third base.
- 29:18The outfield is fairly deep on the left side.
- 29:21With Joe Medwick playing deep in the corner, one ball, Morton Cooper winds up, delivers.
- 29:26There goes a long drive towards left field.
- 29:28That ball has given a real ride, and it is up in the stands for a home run.
- 29:32The American Leaguers lead one to nothing.
- 29:34That was the first home run ever hit by Lou Boudreau in an all-star game.
- 29:56It was a long drive that went to left center field at around the 400-foot mark.
- 30:00It was a tremendous wallop off right-hander Morton Cooper and the American Leaguers lead by a score of one to nothing.
- 30:06Portsider Tommy Henrik is up now.
- 30:10Here comes the pitch, and he looks at the ball low and outside.
- 30:13That is the second time Lou Boudreau has driven in a run in all-star game competition.
- 30:18The score is one to nothing in favor of the American League as a result of his walloping a tremendous homer to left field on the very second pitch thrown to him.
- 30:25The score, one to nothing in favor of the American Leaguers.
- 30:28One ball account on Henrik. Here it is.
- 30:30Too low. Two balls and no strikes.
- 30:35A tremendous roar came from the throats of the assembled fans here at the Polar Grounds.
- 30:40That would have been a home run in virtually any baseball park in the league, in either league, including Washington's Griffith Stadium.
- 30:48The outfield is just about straight away for Tommy Henrik.
- 30:51Right fielder Mel Aude is fairly deep.
- 30:53Here's the pitch.
- 30:54Call strike. A nice pitch just buckle high through the heart of the plate.
- 30:59Incidentally, Morton Cooper, like Higbee of the Brooklyn Dodgers and Paso of the Cubs, is a jinx-defying hurler who wears the numerals 13 on his back.
- 31:08Paced by Boudreau's home run, the American Leaguers have nobody on in the top of the first.
- 31:13Nobody out, and the count is one and two.
- 31:16Outside. Ball free.
- 31:19Three balls, one strike to count.
- 31:21Cooper is a tall, swarthy, extremely handsome right-hander, who many of the Cardinal Rooters believe is another Jerome Dizzy Dean.
- 31:28His record so far this season is 11-3, and his streak of nine consecutive victories was just broken.
- 31:35He winds up, pitches, there's a foul ball down the third base line, fielded very easily by third base coach Artie Fletcher, who flips it to Arke Vaughan.
- 31:43Vaughan is rubbing up the ball. He takes a few steps over toward the infield grass, and Morton Cooper is standing out on the edge of the mound waiting for it.
- 31:50There is one of the American Leaguers making a slow trek from the giant dressing room here at the Polo Grounds over towards the left field bullpen.
- 31:58The count is three and two. The big one just about ready to sail up with Tommy Henrik.
- 32:03The New York Yankee right fielder up. Here it is. There goes a drive that goes solidly into right center field for a hit.
- 32:09Henrik pulls up at first base, rounds the bag, decides to go to second. There's the throw, and he has a double.
- 32:15Center fielder Pete Reiser came in to slow the ball up. It didn't quite have the power to reach him.
- 32:23It was right over the head of second baseman Jimmy Brown of the Cardinals.
- 32:27Henrik rounded first base and very smartly decided that he could take two. He went all the way to second base, hit the dirt, and the play was not close.
- 32:34That is Henrik's 18th double of the year, by the way, but it doesn't count as far as his 287 batting mark is concerned.
- 32:42Something Theodore Williams of the Red Sox is up. That was Henrik's second RBI. Strike one, call.
- 32:50Williams looked at the first one, which Morton Cooper threw just about chest high, right over the heart of the plate.
- 32:55Williams has a batting average of 348. Eighteen home runs so far this year, 80 runs driven in.
- 33:01He spread eagles both the major leagues in the power department.
- 33:04The American Leaguers lead one to nothing. Henrik on second. Here's the pitch. High at outside, one and one.
- 33:10Bucky Walters is warming up for the National Leaguers out in the right field bullpen.
- 33:15Morton Cooper has already faced two men. Boudreau hit a tremendous home run drive into the left field stands at the 400 foot mark, and Henrik doubled to right center.
- 33:25He hit the dirt with a nice slide going in. One and one to count on Williams. Henrik leads off. Here it is.
- 33:30There goes a long drive to left center field. Medwick is going deep for it, waiting, and he takes it.
- 33:36There goes Henrik, tagging up. He draws a throw to third base, which is good, and he goes back to second.
- 33:42Williams hit a long fly ball to left center. It was taken by Medwick. And here is Joe DiMaggio.
- 33:49Joe DiMaggio, the Yankee clipper, whose all-star record is not star-studded. He has a batting average of 268.
- 34:05Many observers believe that this is the night he is destined to break out into full all-star-dom.
- 34:11Low and inside, ball one. Tommy Henrik is on second base with his illustrious Yankee teammate,
- 34:17jolting Joe DiMaggio, standing in that famous wide base of his at home plate.
- 34:22He's waving his bat in the direction of Cooper. The outfield is deep to the left. Medwick has backed up.
- 34:26He is just about as deep as Ott was in right field for Williams. One ball to count. Here it is.
- 34:31Strike called. A good strike through the heart of the plate, buckle high, and the count is one and one.
- 34:37One man out. The American Leaguers one run. The National Leaguers nothing.
- 34:42Lou Boudreau hit a home run on the second pitch. Then Tommy Henrik doubled to right center.
- 34:46Henrik is still anchored at second. He takes a lead. Cooper pitches inside. Ball two, strike one.
- 34:53Joe was all set to tee off on that. Had it appealed to him, he doubtless would have swung from the heels.
- 34:58But he choked his bat and got out of the way. He and his brother Dominic and his other brother Vince
- 35:03stand with their feet probably wider apart than any other trio of batters.
- 35:07Certainly any brother combination in the majors. Two and one to count.
- 35:11There goes a high bouncing ground ball to Archie Vaughn. He holds the runner to second. Throws to first.
- 35:15There's the throw to first base for the out. And Henrik, after the throw was made from Vaughn to Mize
- 35:20to retire DiMaggio, took third. Archie Vaughn did his job. He tried to bluff Tommy back to second base.
- 35:27But Tommy did not go all the way back realizing that Vaughn would have to commit himself.
- 35:31And just as soon as the long throw was made from Vaughn to Mize to retire Joe DiMaggio, Henrik took third on the out.
- 35:37Two men out. Bucky Walters is still warming up by the way. And big Rudy York.
- 35:42Chief Rudy York of the Detroit Tigers is up. He is the first baseman. He bats one below the clean up slot.
- 35:48Has an average of 278 including 14 home runs. Henrik on third. Two men out.
- 35:53Ball inside. That one very nearly shaved the letters. Detroit right off the front of Rudy's chest.
- 35:58He wears the number four. All these players you know are wearing their own uniforms.
- 36:02The National Leaguers, their home uniforms. The American Leaguers, their traveling suits.
- 36:07One ball. No strikes. Two men out. Henrik stands in foul territory just a little off third.
- 36:12Here's the pitch. A swing and a miss.
- 36:16One and one. Rudy swung from the heels on a handle curve ball that came through fast.
- 36:21The infield is back on the left side. Eddie Miller, who has played in 39 errorless games going into this one tonight,
- 36:27which will not count against his National League fielding record, is a deep shortstop. The outfield to the left.
- 36:32There's a drive that goes towards right field. A long drive and that ball is going in for another home run to make it three to nothing.
- 36:39Rudy York is coming home. Back at Tommy Henrik. He's being congratulated by Joe Gordon.
- 36:55The American League leads three to nothing. And Rudy York, who is a notorious center field and left center field and left field hitter,
- 37:02hit a home run straight away into right field for his first all-star run batted in. His 15th home run of the year.
- 37:10He has 14 through the regular season and the score is three to nothing as Henrik scored ahead of him from third.
- 37:15Flash Gordon is up. He has an average of 347. A swing and a miss. Flash went up there ready to swing on the first one.
- 37:23The American Leaguers are threatening to turn this into a first inning rout.
- 37:28Two mighty home runs. One to left by Boudreau. One to right with one on by Rudy York.
- 37:33Each hitting his first round trip wallop in an all-star game. Two men out. None on. Gordon up.
- 37:38The count is one strike. Cooper pitches. There's a swing and a miss. And a chest high curve ball outside and the count is two strikes.
- 37:47Morton Cooper so far has been no puzzle for the American Leaguers, but the game is young.
- 37:52With eight and two-thirds innings still to be played, it is anyone's ball game.
- 37:56Two men out on the top of the first. Nobody on. Gordon has a mark of 347.
- 38:00Bats right. Waits. Swings and misses for strike three.
- 38:05That's the first strikeout of the tenth all-star game.
- 38:08But the American Leaguers pounded Morton Cooper savagely in the first half of the first inning.
- 38:13They collected three runs on three very solid hits for a total of ten bases.
- 38:18There were no errors and of course there were no runners left on base.
- 38:21Now in the event you tuned in late on Mutual's exclusive play-by-play report of the tenth all-star game from the Polo Grounds in New York,
- 38:28the proceeds of which are to go into the Baseball Equipment Fund and to the Army and Navy Service Relief Societies.
- 38:34Here are the lineups again. For the American League, manager Lou Boudreau of the Cleveland Indians shortstop.
- 38:40Tommy Henrik of the Yankees, right field. Ted Williams of Boston, left field.
- 38:44Joe DiMaggio of the Yankees, center field. Rudy York of Detroit, first base.
- 38:48Flash Gordon of New York, second base. Ken Keltner of Cleveland, third base.
- 38:52Bertie Tebbets of Detroit, catcher. And Spurgeon Spud Chandler, whose record is nine and two, a right-hander on the mound.
- 39:00For the National League, Jimmy Brown of the Cardinals, second base.
- 39:03Archie Vaughn of Brooklyn, third base. Pete Reiser of Brooklyn, center field.
- 39:07John Mize of the Giants, first base. Manager Melod of the Giants in right field.
- 39:11Ducky Medwick of Brooklyn, in left. Walker Cooper of the Cardinals, back of the plate.
- 39:16Eddie Miller of the Boston Braves, at shortstop. And Morton Cooper of the St. Louis Cardinals, on the mound.
- 39:22He already has been shelled savagely to the tune of three runs.
- 39:31The score is three to nothing in favor of the American Leaguers.
- 39:34Here comes Jimmy Brown, who is a switch batter. He will bat left-handed.
- 39:39With Spud Chandler on the mound, he has a batting average of 263, including one home run and 14 doubles.
- 39:45Here's the pitch. That ball hit him right in the small of the back, and he takes first.
- 39:58Jimmy Brown had no opportunity even to get out of the way of an inside curveball that broke very sharply.
- 40:04Hit him in the small of the back, and he becomes the first National League baserunner in the all-star game of 1942.
- 40:12Arkee Vaughan is up. Arkee has a batting average of 270. He bats left-handed. One on, nobody out. Chandler pitches.
- 40:22Inside, ball one. Bill McEachney is coaching a third base for the National Leaguers.
- 40:29Frankie Frisch of the Pittsburgh Pirates is coaching a first.
- 40:34One ball, no strikes. Here's the pitch. There's a ground ball that has hit the second baseman.
- 40:38Gordon. Gordon to Boudreaux. One out. Boudreaux to York. Double play.
- 40:51With a count one ball, Arkee Vaughan lashed a savage grounder that went straight as an arrow from a ball to flash Gordon.
- 40:58Gordon wheeled through to Boudreaux, who made a magnificent pivot to throw to Rudy York, who made a good stretch to get Vaughan ahead of the relay.
- 41:06Two men out, nobody on. Pete Reiser, the Major League batting champion of the moment at least, with a batting average of 361.
- 41:12A left-hand batter. Two men out and none on. It knocked him down. Ball one, close to the head.
- 41:18Pete went down. Now he gets up, brushes the dirt off his trousers.
- 41:21Spud Chandler is scraping the dirt together on the mound to make more comfortable that pace of his that he takes towards the plate.
- 41:27He has gotten rid of two men. His teammate, Joe Gordon, started a twin kill.
- 41:31Here's the pitch. Low and inside for a second ball. The American Leaguers have a lead of three runs to nothing on the strength of a home run by Lou Boudreaux and a home run by Rudy York after Tommy Henrik had doubled.
- 41:43Two balls, no strikes. There's a slowly top-ground ball that goes to Gordon. Gordon flips to York and the side is retired.
- 41:51Chandler did not retire the side in one-two-three order, however. He hit Brown with a pitch. Vaughan smashed into a Gordon to Boudreaux to York.
- 41:59Double play and then Reeser hit an easy roller to Joe Gordon. Gordon came in fast and smothered it on a slow hop and threw to York for the out.
- 42:07No runs, no hits, no errors. Nobody left in the last half of the first inning.
- 42:11And there is a little band music to celebrate the fact that the American Leaguers have been the first to score.
- 42:16They'll show no partiality through the course of the evening, however, because there will be just as much in the way of celebration on the part of the National League fans here tonight.
- 42:24The National League, by the way, is the host of the evening. Artie Fletcher is coaching at third base.
- 42:29He's the celebrated Yankee coach, Signal Steeler, and third base coach, Par excellence, who has aided Joe McCarthy and his Yankees to so many world championships.
- 42:37Coaching at first base is Bucky Harris, the manager of the Washington Senators, the former Boy Wonder.
- 42:42The coaches for the National Leaguers are Bill McKechnie and Frankie Frisch.
- 42:46The respective managers, of course, are the two men who matched strategies and tactics in the World Series last year at Yankee Stadium and Ebbets Field.
- 42:53Leo Djerosher and Joe McCarthy.
- 42:55Defensively, the National Leaguers have Medwik in left, Reiser in center, Ott in right, an infield of Mize, Brown, Miller, and Vaughan, and the Cooper brothers of the batter.
- 43:04Ken Keltner of Cleveland is up. He has an average of 285 and he bats right.
- 43:08He opens the second inning for the American Leaguers.
- 43:11Cooper pitches. Ball won.
- 43:14The first pitch was just about hip high and it missed the outside corner.
- 43:19The score, American Leaguers 3, National Leaguers nothing.
- 43:23The outfield is a shade to the left. Third baseman, Archie Vaughan, is playing close to the bag.
- 43:27Miller is deep at short. Here's the pitch.
- 43:31There's a ground ball slowly topped towards Miller who charges it, makes a quick throw to first baseman, John Mize, for the out.
- 43:37That was an easy chance.
- 43:39And the Boston Braves shortstop, who has gone through 39 errorless games and has come within 25 or 30 chances of Leo Djerosher's all-time National League defensive record,
- 43:48made an easy play. One man out and here is Bertie Tebbots, the catcher of the Detroit Tigers.
- 43:55He has a batting average of 244. He has nine doubles so far this year.
- 44:00He is a straightaway hitter. They play him slightly to the left.
- 44:02A crossfire pitch is wide. Ball won.
- 44:06One man out on the first half of the second inning. The outfield slightly to the left.
- 44:10Miller playing back on the grass. Jimmy Brown, too, on the right side of second base is deep.
- 44:14And the third baseman and first baseman are playing fairly close.
- 44:17Right fielder Mel Ott is not deep. Cooper winds up, delivers, strike, called.
- 44:24A sidearm fastball. The crowd likes the colorful way that Ballentant has been calling them
- 44:30because his voice has penetrated to every nook and cranny of the historic polo grounds.
- 44:35One-and-one the count. One man out. Nobody on.
- 44:37The American League at bat in the first of the second with a three-to-nothing lead over their National League brethren.
- 44:42Here it is. A swing and a miss. And Tebbits very nearly lost his balance and sat right down into the dirt.
- 44:49One and two. If there is any one mark of distinction that Birdie wears more than any other, it is his aggressiveness.
- 44:56He is reminiscent of the great Mickey Cochran. He is a fire eater and he fights for what he believes to be the right.
- 45:03One and two. One man out. The pitch. Swing and a miss. Strike three.
- 45:09That is Cooper's second strikeout. He got Gordon to end the first half of the first inning.
- 45:13And here is Spud Chandler, the Yankee pitcher, coming up.
- 45:15He worked as recently as last Friday night when he defeated the Boston Red Sox
- 45:19in the opening tilt of that crucial three-game series at Fenway Park.
- 45:23The first five hits were doubles, two of them by Williams and two by Doar,
- 45:27but thereafter he settled down to coast in with a five-to-three lead.
- 45:31The fact that the Yankees took two out of three from Boston in that series
- 45:34enabled them to stretch their American League lead to four games.
- 45:37Spud has a batting average of 147. Two men out and none on.
- 45:41A half swing. Called a ball when the pitch is wide. One ball, no strikes.
- 45:47Spud has a season's pitching record of nine and two.
- 45:51He and his teammate Hank Baroi of the Yankees are tops in the American League,
- 45:55just as Larry French is in the national loop. Cooper pitches. Ball two.
- 46:00That pitch was low and outside. Spud steps out of the batter's box.
- 46:04As pitchers hit, he's capable of bowling it a long way.
- 46:07The infield is back slightly on the left and Mize is playing in just a few feet back of first base.
- 46:12Cooper gets his sign from his brother Walker. He delivers.
- 46:16Ball three, low. Chandler was well up front that time.
- 46:19He had his bat in bunt position, never used it, and the count is three and all.
- 46:24Three balls and no strikes. The American Leaguers are trying to make it seven out of ten in this All-Star Classic tonight.
- 46:31Cooper gets set, and it's a perfect strike.
- 46:34Chandler was set to take it and he did, not even an effort to swing.
- 46:38Three and one to count.
- 46:40The National Leaguers are in the home team's dugout to the right and just below us,
- 46:45in the dugout occupied by the New York Yankees when they play in the Polo Grounds in World Series, are the American Leaguers.
- 46:50There's a swing and a miss for strike two and then Chandler did go down on one knee and was quick to get back up again.
- 46:56Cooper had himself in a three and nothing hole. Then he pitched a good called strike and got Chandler on a clean swing and a miss.
- 47:02Three and two.
- 47:04Two men out and no one on.
- 47:07The wind up.
- 47:09The pitch. There goes a long drive to right center field.
- 47:12Center fielder Reezer is over waiting, and he takes it going away for the third and final out in the first half of the second inning.
- 47:19That is Pete's first chance. No runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left.
- 47:23At the end of an inning and a half, going into the last half of the second inning with the National Leaguers slated to come to the plate,
- 47:28the totals are American Leaguers, three runs, three hits, no errors, the National Leaguers, no runs, no hits, and no errors.
- 47:35We pause now for station identification. This is the mutual broadcasting system.
- 47:42WGN, the voice of the people, Chicago.
- 47:47The last half of the second inning coming up with Big Johnny Mize, the New York Giant first baseman, his manager and right fielder Mel Ott,
- 47:54and left fielder Ducky Medwick of the Brooklyn Dodgers slated to bat in that order.
- 47:58If you're one of our most recent listeners and tuned in late in the very first inning,
- 48:02Boudreaux led off with a home run on the second pitch to put the American League ahead one to nothing.
- 48:07Henrik doubled to right center, moved up on DiMaggio's infield out after Williams had flied out,
- 48:12and York hit a home run into the right field stands just inside the pole to make it three to nothing.
- 48:17Chandler faces Mize. It's a strike. A fast one right down the middle to Big John.
- 48:23He represents most of the giant power, the power the Cardinals lost in their trade.
- 48:27He has an average of 292 and 14 home runs.
- 48:30There's a foul ball way over to the right, up against one of the box seats, and there goes Frankie Frisch of Pittsburgh to recover it.
- 48:37Strike two. Spud Chandler of the Yankees and Bertie Tebbitz of Detroit. That's the American League battery.
- 48:43In left field Williams of Boston, DiMaggio and Henrik of the Yanks in center and right,
- 48:48the infield York of Detroit, Gordon of New York, Boudreaux and Keltner of Cleveland at first, second, short, and third.
- 48:54The count is two strikes on Johnny Mize. Here's the pitch. Too close.
- 48:59John simply stepped back almost imperceptibly to get out of the way of it.
- 49:03The outfield is just a shade to the right, and center fielder DiMaggio is playing deep.
- 49:08Chandler winds up, delivers. A curve ball missed the outside corner.
- 49:12John followed it with his eye until the last possible break. The count is two and two.
- 49:17The National Leaguers are trailing, no runs to three in the last half of the second inning.
- 49:21Spud Chandler of the Yankees and his American League teammates are off to a flying start
- 49:25as a result of that power that they have been talking so much about.
- 49:29The windup, the pitch, there goes the ground ball, hit towards Rudy York.
- 49:33York spears it, Chandler covers, takes it in time for a beautiful piece of teamwork.
- 49:38That was a fine play, both by York and Chandler, who was able to go all the way from the mound to first to cover in time for the out.
- 49:50Mellard is up, and this of course is the Polar Grounds in the shadow of Coogan's Fluff,
- 49:56and Little Mal is one of the most beloved baseball players John McGraw ever had.
- 50:01He succeeded to the mantle of the famous Little Napoleon.
- 50:05He bats left-handed, has a batting average of 269, which is well below par for him.
- 50:10He has 12 home runs, however, and 10 doubles this year. One out, none on.
- 50:15Strike called. Chandler threw a fairly slow curve ball over the outside.
- 50:20It had a nice break, just about waist high. One strike, one man out, nobody on.
- 50:25The American League ahead, three to nothing.
- 50:27There goes a high foul ball, and it's going out of the field of play.
- 50:31Up on top of the press coop, and then it rolled down over the top.
- 50:34The count is strike two.
- 50:36That play made by Rudy York on Mize was great, but it would not have been possible
- 50:41had it not been for the quick reflex action of Spud Chandler, who went very quickly from the mound to first base to cover.
- 50:47A distance of about 65 feet.
- 50:51Two strikes, one man out, nobody on.
- 50:55The National Leaguers are striving desperately to get those three runs back.
- 50:59Chandler so far has been effective, and he has had fine support.
- 51:03The outfield is straight away. Here's the pitch. Outside and high.
- 51:07One ball, two strikes.
- 51:09When Little Mel first reported to John McGraw down in the Louisiana training camp with the New York Giants,
- 51:14you may recall he was a catcher.
- 51:16But after one or two days back of the mound, back of the plate, McGraw decided to make him a fielder.
- 51:20Here's the pitch. Outside. Ball two, two and two.
- 51:25Mel still has that characteristic of his batting stance.
- 51:28He cocks that right foot well up into the air and lets go with it just as he swings with that lethal left-handed power of his.
- 51:35Two and two, one man out.
- 51:38Nobody on for the National Leaguers in the last half of the second.
- 51:40Spud Chandler gets his sign from Bertie Tebbits.
- 51:43He takes a deep windup.
- 51:45Pitches. Inside. That one very nearly hit Mel.
- 51:48Three and two. He had to spin back out of the way of it.
- 51:54Played on par Lee Ballenfant. Goes through his Whisproom Act.
- 51:59Now he puts the brush back into his pocket.
- 52:03He is trying to tell somebody in the dugout that that last was a foul ball and the count should be two and two.
- 52:11That's right.
- 52:13I assume that the ball nearly hit Mel, but it ticked his bat on the way by.
- 52:16Here's the pitch.
- 52:18Strike three and he is called out.
- 52:21He stands there as if he does not believe it.
- 52:25It's a called third strike.
- 52:27A curve ball that broke just about chest high.
- 52:30Apparently it caught the inside corner and Mel stood there incredulously.
- 52:34Finally went back to the dugout and made way for Ducky Medwick of Brooklyn.
- 52:38That is the first strikeout for Spud Chandler and he crossed up Mel on with a superb curve ball.
- 52:44Two men out. Medwick up with a batting average of 344.
- 52:47He's runner up to Reeser in the National League Batting Department.
- 52:50Here's the pitch. There's a ground ball hit to Rudy York.
- 52:53York takes it. There goes Chandler to cover quickly. He steps on the bag.
- 52:56Medwick is out and that is a one, two, three inning.
- 52:59In two frames, Spud Chandler of the New York Yankees has faced only six of his National League brethren.
- 53:06Oddly enough, out of the three plays that have not involved a double play on the part of the American League defense,
- 53:13it has been York to Chandler twice with Mize and Medwick being the victims.
- 53:17In two innings, the National Leaguers have no runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left.
- 53:22They have had only one baserunner and he was short live.
- 53:25Jimmy Brown was hit by a pitch in the first inning, but Vaughn whacked into a Gordon to Boudreaux to York double play.
- 53:31Morton Cooper is going to pitch in the first half of the third inning as well.
- 53:35And again, he will face Lou Boudreaux.
- 53:39That home run of Lou's must have climaxed a boyhood dream because what red-blooded American youngster
- 53:45doesn't have some childlike vision that one day he will step up to the plate in an all-star game or a World Series classic
- 53:52and boom one of the enemy pitches far away into the bleachers for four bases.
- 53:56It was the first run Lou had driven in in an all-star game. It was also his first home run.
- 54:01Rudy York's first home run was a freak as far as Rudy is concerned because he hit it as a left-hander might,
- 54:07just down the right field line, a well-timed blow that went into the stands.
- 54:12Boudreaux has one hit for a total of four bases. Morton Cooper pitches.
- 54:16There goes a high-fly ball to straight center field. Reeser is coming in fast.
- 54:19Second baseman Brown going out. Reeser takes it for the out.
- 54:24One man out, nobody on. Tommy Henrich comes up.
- 54:29Henrich got two bases on a ball that stopped rolling when it got out into short right center field.
- 54:34Both Reeser and Ott had to converge on it.
- 54:39Tommy collected his 18th double of the year, but 17 of them count in regulation American League games.
- 54:45One out and none on. He bats left. There goes a high hop-up.
- 54:49Jimmy Brown is running in to the right side of second base. He follows it and he takes it for the second out.
- 54:54Morton Cooper has really buckled down. He has now retired six consecutive American League batters
- 55:00after that savage three-run explosion in the top of the first.
- 55:05Two men out and Ted Williams up. Ted lifted a high-fly ball to left fielder Joe Medwick about 360 feet out his first time up
- 55:13with Henrich on second base. Henrich was stranded, moved to third, and then scored on Yarks Homer.
- 55:18Ted gets it. Here it is. Strike. Call.
- 55:22That pitch was right through the heart of the plate. It split that 17-inch platter just below the buckle.
- 55:28And the count is strike one. Two men out. Ted has 18 home runs, 13 doubles, four triples this year, and has driven in 80 runs.
- 55:36Two men out and none on. Here's the pitch. There goes a drive safely at a right field for a solid base hit.
- 55:42And the kid pulls up at first with a single, hit number four for the American League.
- 55:47Joe DiMaggio comes up.
- 55:51Joe grounded out in the first inning to third baseman Archie Vaughn of the National Leaguers.
- 55:57The fact that a few boos greet him as he goes to the plate is really a tribute to his popularity because no player has ever really achieved greatness
- 56:04until some of the boys sit back and give the old Bronx cheer. It's music to the ears of most of them.
- 56:10Two men out. Williams on first. DiMaggio a right-hand batter, the outfield deep to the left. There's a high pop-up to the right.
- 56:17Back of the plate comes Walker Cooper waiting for it. And he takes it for the third out in the top of the third inning.
- 56:23High foul fly on the first pitch with Williams breaking for second. No runs. One hit. No errors. One runner left.
- 56:32In the event you tuned in late, the American League's three runs came right off the reel. They exploded like gunpowder.
- 56:38Lou Boudreaux took a ball. Then the next pitch was in there and he promptly lost it in the left field stands at around the 400 mark.
- 56:45It was a tremendous wallop and he put every ounce of his right-handed power behind it to drive in his first all-star game run
- 56:52and send the American Leaguers away to a flying one-to-nothing start. Then Tommy Henrik doubled to right center.
- 56:57He held second as Medwick took Ted Williams' long fly ball in left center field.
- 57:02Henrik moved to third as Archie Vaughn threw out Joe DiMaggio and Rudy York pulled a long right-handed home run just inside the right field stands,
- 57:10the spot into which Mel Ott normally deposits those long round trippers of his.
- 57:15Willard Marshall is going to bat for Cooper, Mort Cooper.
- 57:23The first man up in the last half of the third inning will be Walker Cooper. His brother will not come to the plate.
- 57:31It will be Walker Cooper, Eddie Miller, and Will Marshall of the New York Giants.
- 57:36He is the sensational rookie outfielder of this year, whom the Giants purchased from one of the Southern clubs on a look basis.
- 57:42There's the long throw from catcher Bertie Tebbott down to second baseman Flash Gordon of the Yankees.
- 57:47Third baseman Ken Keltner is waiting for Spud Chandler to look up before he returns the pitch to him.
- 57:52In two innings, Spud has faced six men. He hit Brown in the back in the first inning to give the National Leaguers their only baserunner.
- 57:58Now, with a more or less decisive three-to-nothing lead, he faces Walker Cooper, whose season's average is 284.
- 58:05Walker bats right. Foul tip, into the dirt, out of the reach of Bertie Tebbott.
- 58:10Walker has four home runs so far this year, eight doubles and two triples.
- 58:14Oddly enough, he was the pitcher and Morton was the catcher when the Cooper brothers broke in.
- 58:19Mort decided he would infinitely prefer to throw at his brother.
- 58:22So today, he is the outstanding pitcher of the National League, with 11 victories and three defeats.
- 58:28One strike, no balls, none out and none on in the last of the third.
- 58:32Chandler delivers. There's a drive that goes savagely to Gordon's right into center field for a hit, the first National League hit of the night.
- 58:39It came on the second pitch. After a foul strike, Walker Cooper smashed a savage grounder about 15 feet to the right of Joe Gordon.
- 58:49And there is no longer a no-hitter in prospect for the American League twirler.
- 58:54Eddie Miller is up. Eddie has a batting average of 268.
- 58:58He's the shortstop of the Boston Braves, is having his greatest year.
- 59:01He has a record of 39 errorless games. His batting record includes four home runs, 19 doubles.
- 59:07And he's well up among the major league leaders in stolen bases.
- 59:10Walker Cooper on first, none out. Here's the pitch.
- 59:13There's a foul ball drifting back into the stands for a strike.
- 59:18One strike, no balls, nobody out in the last half of the third inning.
- 59:22How long Spud Chandler is going to pitch remains to be seen.
- 59:25There has been no warm-up activity in the American League bullpen.
- 59:28But Johnny Vanderbeer and Bucky Walters have been warming up alternately.
- 59:32It now is Vanderbeer in the National League bullpen out in right field.
- 59:35One strike, Chandler stretches, pitches.
- 59:38There's a ground foul to the left and the count is strike two.
- 59:42That hit the box in which the venerable Connie Mack of the Philadelphia A's is seated.
- 59:46One of the greatest figures in baseball.
- 59:49Two strikes, the count.
- 59:52Back of home plate crouches Bertie Tebbitz of Detroit. The infield is slightly to the left.
- 59:56It's set up in a possible double play formation.
- 59:59And Spud Chandler is undoubtedly trying to keep the ball low on Eddie Miller to make him hit it into the dirt.
- 1:00:05Here's the pitch. Strike three.
- 1:00:07Miller went after a chest-high curve ball, missed it cleanly,
- 1:00:11and then he asked the plate umpire Lee Balanfant to check it and look it over.
- 1:00:14And Balanfant is going to throw it out.
- 1:00:18That is Chandler's second strikeout.
- 1:00:20And here is Willard Marshall of the New York Giants.
- 1:00:26He is one of the New York Giants outfielders.
- 1:00:30He has a batting average so far this season of 251.
- 1:00:37Miller was the first out in the last half of the third inning.
- 1:00:40He went down swinging. Walker Cooper is on first.
- 1:00:43And left-handed Will Marshall is batting for Morton Cooper,
- 1:00:47the St. Louis Cardinal pitcher who started for the National Leaguers.
- 1:00:50The American Leaguers lead three to nothing.
- 1:00:52Here's the pitch by Chandler, low and outside for a ball.
- 1:00:58Here is another first, by the way.
- 1:01:00Walker Cooper got the first National League hit.
- 1:01:02Willard Marshall is the first pinch hitter of the evening.
- 1:01:06Chandler stretches, pitches.
- 1:01:08A slow ball is topped to the right of the mound.
- 1:01:10Chandler picks it up, throws to Boudreaux for a force out at second.
- 1:01:13The relay to first is not in time.
- 1:01:15It's a fielder's choice.
- 1:01:16Marshall grounded one right back to Chandler who quickly went to his left to break it down.
- 1:01:20He wheeled and threw to shortstop Lou Boudreaux to force Walker Cooper,
- 1:01:24but Marshall reached first base on the fielder's choice.
- 1:01:26Boudreaux was unable to get out of the way of Walker Cooper who came in spikes flying
- 1:01:31in an effort to make his relay in time for the twin kill.
- 1:01:35Two men out.
- 1:01:36Will Marshall of the Giants is on first base.
- 1:01:39And Jimmy Brown, the St. Louis Cardinal third baseman
- 1:01:42and the second baseman in the All-Star Classic tonight is up.
- 1:01:45He was hit by a pitch in the first inning.
- 1:01:47He bats left-handed.
- 1:01:49In the dirt, ball one.
- 1:01:51Jimmy bats both left and right.
- 1:01:53But the fact that Spud Chandler throws from the right side makes Jimmy turn around on the left side.
- 1:01:57He is a switch hitter.
- 1:02:00One ball, no strikes.
- 1:02:01Two men out.
- 1:02:02Marshall on first.
- 1:02:04Chandler delivers.
- 1:02:05There's a ground ball hit right to Joe Gordon.
- 1:02:07Gordon bobbles it, recovers it, and throws to first for the out.
- 1:02:10And the first three innings are over.
- 1:02:12Gordon bobbled the ball but recovered in plenty of time.
- 1:02:14No runs, one hit, no errors, one runner left.
- 1:02:17So here are the three inning totals.
- 1:02:19For the American Leaguers, three runs, four hits and no errors.
- 1:02:22For the National Leaguers, no runs, one hit and no errors.
- 1:02:26And now for the play-by-play report of the next three innings.
- 1:02:29Here is Nell Allen of WOR New York.
- 1:02:33Hello everybody.
- 1:02:35We're going to have a new pitcher for the National Leaguers
- 1:02:37as we get ready to go on to the fourth inning of this 10th annual All-Star game.
- 1:02:41And it's going to be Johnny Vandermeer.
- 1:02:43Morton Cooper, who started for the National Leaguers,
- 1:02:46worked the first three innings, allowed four hits,
- 1:02:49issued no passes, struck out one man, and allowed three runs,
- 1:02:54all of which came in the first inning when manager Lou Budrow
- 1:02:57of the Cleveland Indians led off with a home run.
- 1:02:59Tommy Henrik followed with a double.
- 1:03:01And then after Cooper had retired Williams and DiMaggio,
- 1:03:03Rudy York hit a home run into the right field stand,
- 1:03:06scoring Henrik ahead of him to give the American Leaguers their three runs
- 1:03:09and their current three-nothing lead as we prepare to go into the first half of the fourth inning.
- 1:03:14Johnny Vandermeer has appeared in 15 games so far this season for the Cincinnati Reds.
- 1:03:19He's won eight and lost six.
- 1:03:21He has pitched 121 in one-third innings,
- 1:03:24during which time he has allowed 90 hits, walked 46 men, and struck out 75.
- 1:03:29This is not Vandermeer's first appearance in an All-Star game.
- 1:03:33Here's the announcement.
- 1:03:35Back in 1938, Johnny Vandermeer appeared in an All-Star game
- 1:03:50and got credit for one of the three games which the National Leaguers have won from the American League teams.
- 1:03:56He pitched three innings in 1938 in the All-Star game,
- 1:03:59allowed one hit, walked one, struck out one to get credit for the win.
- 1:04:05Incidentally, Dizzy Dean and Paul Derringer are the other two pitchers who boast wins over the American Leaguers.
- 1:04:12Deans came in 1936 in the fourth game of the All-Star Classic.
- 1:04:16Final score was 4-3.
- 1:04:18Paul Derringer got credit for the win for the National League in 1940.
- 1:04:23That was the year the National Leaguers shut out the American Leaguers 4-0,
- 1:04:27the only shutout game in the history of the All-Star Classic.
- 1:04:31Along with Derringer, Waller's wide French and Hubble combined to hurl that shutout.
- 1:04:36Rudy York leads off for the American Leaguers.
- 1:04:38We go into the first half of the fourth inning with the American Leaguers leading 3-0.
- 1:04:42York hit a home run in the first inning with Tommy Henryk aboard.
- 1:04:45The bat's right-handed.
- 1:04:47Vandermeer into the windup. In comes the pitch.
- 1:04:48York takes a very high one way over the head of Morton Cooper.
- 1:04:51Had there been any one on, it would have been a wild pitch.
- 1:04:54Ball one, a very high pitch way over the head of both York and Morton Cooper.
- 1:05:00Vandermeer goes to the rosin bag, get a better grip on that ball.
- 1:05:04Outfield plays York just a bit toward left and center and left, straight away and right.
- 1:05:11Vandermeer ready.
- 1:05:12Into his windup, in comes the pitch to York.
- 1:05:14He takes a high one for ball two.
- 1:05:16Nothing to count on York.
- 1:05:19On deck is Joe Gordon. Then will come Kenny Keltner.
- 1:05:22Vandermeer looks in to get the sign from Morton Cooper.
- 1:05:24Art Fletcher is coaching at third base.
- 1:05:26Bucky Harris, manager of the Washington Senators, coaching at first.
- 1:05:30Vandermeer ready with a 2-0 pitch to York.
- 1:05:32York swings, he misses. Strike one.
- 1:05:35Two and one to count on Rudy.
- 1:05:37The National League infield, Vaughn at third, Miller at short.
- 1:05:40Brown at second. Mize on first.
- 1:05:42In the outfield, Medwick in left, Reeser in center, odd in right.
- 1:05:45Two balls, one strike on Rudy York leading off to the American League first half of the fourth inning.
- 1:05:50Vandermeer throws. York takes another one high, very high for ball three.
- 1:05:54We have a 3-1 count on the Detroit Tigers first baseman.
- 1:05:58He turns around and looks at Walker Cooper, an umpire lead ballon fan, working back to plate and sort of smiles at him.
- 1:06:04Vandermeer adjusts his cap, stands up on the hill, looks in now to get the sign from Walker Cooper.
- 1:06:11Taking his time.
- 1:06:12Eyes all set for the 3-1 pitch. York digs in.
- 1:06:14Talks that bat up over his right shoulder. Here it is. He takes it and it's in there for Carl's strike two.
- 1:06:20So we have a full count on Rudy York.
- 1:06:22Three and two. Three to nothing to score in favor of the American League.
- 1:06:26First half of the fourth inning. Outfield back very deep for York.
- 1:06:30Archie Vaughn playing a deep third, close to third baseline.
- 1:06:32Mize a deep first, guarding the first baseline.
- 1:06:35Here's the payoff pitch to York. Rudy swings, he misses. Strike three.
- 1:06:39Strikeout number one for Johnny Vandermeer and the second American Lakers who have struck out this evening.
- 1:06:49First one being Joe Gordon in the first inning, whom Morton Cooper struck out.
- 1:06:53And here's Joe Gordon stepping in as a batting average on the season of.347.
- 1:06:59That's right-handed.
- 1:07:01Gordon's all-star batting average is 125 up until tonight's game.
- 1:07:07Vandermeer throws, Gordon takes a slow pitch high for ball one.
- 1:07:11Outfield pulled over toward left and deep and center and left. Almost ready when right.
- 1:07:15Playing for a full hitter primarily.
- 1:07:18Vandermeer taking his time. One out, nobody on base.
- 1:07:22Johnny ready to work, throws. Gordon takes it high for ball two.
- 1:07:27Two-nothing to count on the Yankees' second baseman, Joe Gordon.
- 1:07:31Joe steps out of the batter's box for a moment to get himself a little dirt in his hands.
- 1:07:34Now he moves back in hitting position, has a look at Bucky Harris coaching it first for the hit-or-take sign of the two-nothing pitch.
- 1:07:39Vandermeer ready to throw it, goes into his wind-up. Gordon set at the plate, here it comes.
- 1:07:43Joe swings, he misses. Strike one.
- 1:07:47Two-and-one to count.
- 1:07:51Gordon steps out of the batter's box now. Vandermeer goes back to the rosin bag.
- 1:07:55Crowd got a whale of a kick out of Joe Gordon's terrific cut at that pitch.
- 1:07:59Three to nothing is the score, a favor of the American League. First half of the fourth inning.
- 1:08:03Vandermeer rocks in the box as he goes into his wind-up. Here's the delivery.
- 1:08:07Gordon takes it, strike two. It's called sharp curve over the outside corner, letter high.
- 1:08:12So it's two-two on Joe Gordon. Once again, Vandermeer to the rosin bag.
- 1:08:17The umpires back to the plate, Lee Ballant pant at first base. Ernie Stewart, Al Barlich on second.
- 1:08:23Bill McGowan at third. One away, nobody on.
- 1:08:28Two balls, two strikes on Joe Gordon. Vandermeer looking in to get the sign from Morton Cooper.
- 1:08:32He's ready to work. Gordon digs in, awaiting the pitch.
- 1:08:35In it comes. It's high. Ball three. We have a full count on Gordon.
- 1:08:40Three and two. Joe reaches down, getting a little dirt.
- 1:08:43Wipes it on his hands, looks over at the National League bench. Some of the boys gave him a bit of a ride.
- 1:08:49He gets in, stands deep in the batter's box, in close to the plate, feet pretty close together,
- 1:08:52holds that bat down at the end of the handle.
- 1:08:55Vandermeer all set for the payoff pitch to Joe Gordon. Here it comes.
- 1:08:58Gordon takes it and it's in there for call strike three.
- 1:09:08And so Johnny Vandermeer strikes out the first too many faces.
- 1:09:12Rudy York and Joe Gordon, in already buzzing in the minds of the fans here at the Polar Grounds tonight,
- 1:09:19that historic performance in an all-star game of Carl Hubble.
- 1:09:22Remember that. Struck out those five men in a row.
- 1:09:27Here is Kenny Keltner stepping up, grounded out to short in the second inning.
- 1:09:31That's right-handed. First pitch is high outside for ball one.
- 1:09:34Keltner hitting it 299 on the season.
- 1:09:37He was hitting it an even 500 up until tonight's game, an all-star competition.
- 1:09:41Knee slightly bent, holds that bat down at the end of the handle, extended in front of his body.
- 1:09:45Outfield pulled a little toward the left.
- 1:09:48Vandermeer all set. Keltner digs in. In comes the pitch.
- 1:09:51Keltner swings and lifts a pop-up out toward short.
- 1:09:54Eddie Miller under it, waiting for it to come down, still waiting, and he makes the catch for the out.
- 1:10:00Went way up there, took a long time to come down.
- 1:10:03And so Johnny Vandermeer gets a nice hand as he moves off the mound of the National League bench.
- 1:10:09No runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left on for the American Leaguers in the fourth inning
- 1:10:13and the score at the end of three and a half innings, three and nothing in favor of the American League.
- 1:10:16Now we're going to pause for station identification.
- 1:10:19This is WGN, the voice of the people, Chicago.

- 1:10:53The score is three to nothing in favor of the American League as we come into the last half of the fourth inning.
- 1:10:58And the American Leaguers striking swiftly, a home run by Lou Budrow and one by Rudy York with Tom Henrik on who had doubled in the first inning
- 1:11:04giving the American Leaguers their three runs.
- 1:11:06Here's Archie Vaughn leading off for the National League in the last half of the fourth.
- 1:11:10He hit into a double play in the first inning, hit two home runs last year in the all-star game in Detroit.
- 1:11:14Spud Chandler into the windup, in comes the pitch, swung on to the ground ball, hit out to first, York grabs it.
- 1:11:18Chandler running over to first to throw, he steps on first just in time for the out ahead of Archie Vaughn, a very close play.
- 1:11:24Chandler's had quite a workout tonight in taking throws over to first from Rudy York.
- 1:11:29That's the third time tonight that he has made the put out at first base.
- 1:11:34Johnny Maez and Joe Medwick in the second inning, each grounded to York, and Chandler covered on each play.
- 1:11:41One out, here is Pete Reiser, the Brooklyn Dodgers stepping in, grounded out to Joe Gordon in the first inning,
- 1:11:45bats left-handed, has an average on the season of 361.
- 1:11:49Three to nothing favor the American League last half of the fourth.
- 1:11:52This year it's possible for the starting pitcher to go five innings and it may be that Chandler will go that distance.
- 1:11:58We'll wait and see. First pitch in to Reiser, outside, ball one.
- 1:12:03On deck is Johnny Maez. Three to nothing favor the American League last half of the fourth.
- 1:12:10Chandler turns his back to the plate, looks out in the outfield, playing Reiser almost straight away.
- 1:12:15Little activity in the American League bullpen right now, left-hander and the right-hander warming up.
- 1:12:20Chandler into the windup, in comes the pitch to Reiser, it's inside for ball two.
- 1:12:27Al Benton of the Detroit Tigers is throwing along with Cotton Ed Smith of the Chicago White Sox.
- 1:12:35Chandler throws, Reiser swings, the line's one out. Gordon makes a great stop, picks it up, throws to first.
- 1:12:40And in time for the out, but then York drops the ball.
- 1:12:44And the decision is changed on the play and safe at first is Pete Reiser.
- 1:12:48Joe Gordon went far to his right and back to second base, made a one-handed, glove-handed stop.
- 1:12:53Reiser's drive, picked the ball up after he had momentarily booted it, threw over to first, in time for the out,
- 1:13:01but York couldn't hold onto the ball and the decision first was changed and the official scorer has decided to get Pete Reiser credit for a base hit.
- 1:13:08A beautiful stop by Joe Gordon.
- 1:13:12And here is Donnie Mays stepping in.
- 1:13:15Mays grounded out York to Chandler who covered in the second inning his first time up.
- 1:13:20Mays bats left-handed, one out, Reiser on first.
- 1:13:25Chandler looks in again for Simon Tebbitz, takes a stretch, looks over to first, here's the pitch, Mays takes it.
- 1:13:30Side corner for call, strike one.
- 1:13:33Bill McKechnie, manager of the Cincinnati Reds, coaching at third base.
- 1:13:37Frankie Frisch at first base.
- 1:13:40Outfield playing Mays deep, slightly toward right, in center right, almost right away and left.
- 1:13:45Chandler ready, Reiser moves off first, the pitch to Mays.
- 1:13:47Mays swings and he misses, strike two.
- 1:13:51Kenny Keltner at third base, Lou Budgrove shortstop.
- 1:13:54Joe Gordon at second, Rudy York on first.
- 1:13:56The American League infield, Bertie Tebbitz is catching.
- 1:13:58In the outfield it's Williamson left, DiMaggio in center, Joe DiMaggio and Tommy Henrik in right field.
- 1:14:04Spud Chandler stands ahead of Mays, Frankie Frisch hollers down to the plate to John B. Ready.
- 1:14:09Chandler ready to work, looks over, throws.
- 1:14:12Mays swings and drives one going into deep right field.
- 1:14:14There goes Tommy Henrik racing way back, going back to the bullpen and makes the catch for the out.
- 1:14:19And Pete Reiser who was all the way down to second has to hustle to get back to first.
- 1:14:25Johnny Mays drove one into deep right field, a drive good for more than 400 feet.
- 1:14:32But Tommy Henrik raced way back to the National League bullpen, which is in deep right field, to make the catch for the out.
- 1:14:39It was so far out that Pete Reiser was on first, had time to go all the way down to second base and come back to first after the catch.
- 1:14:47Two outs now.
- 1:14:49If Mays had been able to pull that a little bit more, it would have been in the stands.
- 1:14:53Two outs and here's Malout stepping in.
- 1:14:55Stick a third call, strike in the second inning, left-handed hitter, first pitch to him.
- 1:14:58Outside and low for ball one.
- 1:15:00Three to nothing to score in favor of the American League.
- 1:15:02Last half of the fourth inning.
- 1:15:05Two men away, Pete Reiser on first base.
- 1:15:08Defensive set up for out, almost the same as it was for Johnny Mays.
- 1:15:14Chandler blows on his pitching hand, bobs the ball around in his glove.
- 1:15:17Bertie Tebbitz and Lukasz give him the sign.
- 1:15:19Chandler takes a stretch, Reiser feeds off first.
- 1:15:21Pitch to out, it sends the dirt and gets away from Bertie Tebbitz.
- 1:15:24There goes Pete Reiser down to second.
- 1:15:26Tebbitz chasing the ball, Reiser takes a wide turn but ducks back in to second.
- 1:15:30And lining up in back of Kenny Keltner, who's there to cover third, is Chandler, Budrow, and Ted Williams.
- 1:15:37He had plenty of protection.
- 1:15:39Back of him on that play had Tebbitz elected to throw the ball down to third.
- 1:15:46The official scorer has called that a pass ball.
- 1:15:49Charge to Bertie Tebbitz, enabling Pete Reiser to go down to second base, and that puts him in scoring position.
- 1:15:56Two balls, no strikes on Mel Ott.
- 1:15:57Ottie has a look.
- 1:15:58Bill McKechnie coaching at third for the hit or take sign on this 2-0 pitch.
- 1:16:033-0 to the score, favor of the American League, last half of the fourth.
- 1:16:09And that's the first National Leaguer to have reached second base so far in the ball game.
- 1:16:15Chandler taking his time.
- 1:16:17Mel Ott stepping in there to hit.
- 1:16:20Chandler ready, takes the stretch, looks back at second, throws over the inside corner for a call.
- 1:16:25Strike one on Ottie.
- 1:16:27Two and one.
- 1:16:323-0 to the score, favor of the American League.
- 1:16:34It's the last half of the fourth inning, two men out, Pete Reiser on second base.
- 1:16:38Out the batter with Joe Medwick on deck.
- 1:16:40Chandler takes a long, slow stretch, throws, Ott swings and drives the foul right at the plate.
- 1:16:45Strike two.
- 1:16:47Two to the count, Bertie Tebbits picks the ball up, hands it to Lee Ballenplant.
- 1:16:51Lee rubs the cover up a little bit and hands it back to Tebbits who in turn tosses it out to Spud Chandler.
- 1:16:57Little activity still going on in the American League bullpen.
- 1:17:00Al Benton, the right-hander, and Ed Smith, the left-hander.
- 1:17:03Warming up.
- 1:17:04Benton of the Tigers, Smith of the White Sox.
- 1:17:07Two to the count on Mel Ott.
- 1:17:09Chandler taking his time, now he's ready.
- 1:17:11Into his stretch, Reiser leads off second.
- 1:17:13Here's the pitch to Ott, Mel swings and drives one, but a curving foul.
- 1:17:16It's going foul up into the upper deck in right field.
- 1:17:21He pulled that one a little bit too much.
- 1:17:23Pulled it foul up over the scoreboard in right field and into the upper deck.
- 1:17:28So the count remains, two balls, two strikes.
- 1:17:33Mel's been playing these polo grounds for many a year.
- 1:17:36Knows all of its little tricks.
- 1:17:40And many a ball, he's pulled into those right field stands.
- 1:17:43He's hit 12 home runs on the season.
- 1:17:49Chandler ready.
- 1:17:50Here it is.
- 1:17:51Ott moves away from an inside pitch for ball three.
- 1:17:54So we have a full count on the giant skipper.
- 1:17:57Mel Ott steps out of the batter's box, gets a little dirt on his hands.
- 1:18:01Chandler turns his back to the plate, looks around the outfield once again.
- 1:18:04Pete Reiser standing just a few feet off second.
- 1:18:06Lou Budrow deep short.
- 1:18:07Budrow starts moving in back of Reiser, trying to make Reiser duck back into second.
- 1:18:12Reiser doesn't pay him any attention.
- 1:18:14Chandler ready for the payoff pitch to Mel Ott.
- 1:18:16Here it is.
- 1:18:17Ott swings, sends a bounder out to second.
- 1:18:18Joe Gordon takes it on two hops, throws over to Rudy York in time for the out.
- 1:18:23And that's all for the National League and the last half of the fourth inning.
- 1:18:27No runs, one hit, no American League errors.
- 1:18:31One man left on base.
- 1:18:32And the score at the end of four innings, three to nothing in favor of the
- 1:18:36American League.
- 1:18:45As we go into the fifth inning, it will be Bertie Tebbott, Spud Chandler,
- 1:18:49and Lou Budrow scheduled to hit in that order unless we have a pinch hitter,
- 1:18:53possibly for Chandler.
- 1:18:55Activity is still taking place in the American League bullpen.
- 1:18:58And that's all for Chandler.
- 1:18:59He just took his jacket, threw it over his arm, and is trotting out to the clubhouse.
- 1:19:02Listen to the applause.
- 1:19:14Spud Chandler, who started the game for the American League,
- 1:19:16thus worked four innings, allowed only two hits, issued no passes,
- 1:19:20and struck out two men.
- 1:19:22And should the American Leaguers maintain their current advantage,
- 1:19:26the victory will be credited to Spud Chandler in all probability.
- 1:19:32Bertie Tebbott will lead off for the American League as we go into the first half
- 1:19:35of the fifth inning.
- 1:19:36Tebbott struck out in the second inning in his only appearance at the plate thus far.
- 1:19:42This is Bertie's first appearance in an all-star game.
- 1:19:46Bill Dickey, who was scheduled to catch for the American Leaguers,
- 1:19:50came up with the lame shoulder and was unable to participate.
- 1:19:54Tebbott sticks in, right-handed batter.
- 1:19:56Outfield pulled over toward left.
- 1:20:00Johnny Vandermeer, left-hander, doing the pitching now for the National League.
- 1:20:03Morton Cooper worked the first three innings.
- 1:20:05Vandermeer into the wind-up, first pitch to Tebbott.

- 1:20:25He's on deck.
- 1:20:26Vandermeer pitches.
- 1:20:27Tebbott takes it inside.
- 1:20:29Ball one almost at the inside corner, but not quite.
- 1:20:33Walter Cooper still doing the catching for the National League.
- 1:20:37National League wearing home uniforms.
- 1:20:39They are the home team today.
- 1:20:41One-on-one the count now on Bertie Tebbott.
- 1:20:43Three to nothing to score.
- 1:20:44Play for the American League.
- 1:20:45It's the first half of the fifth inning.
- 1:20:47Johnny Vandermeer, the left-hander, ready, throws.
- 1:20:49Tebbott swings and fouls it off.
- 1:20:51Over the National League dugout up into the upper deck.
- 1:20:53Strike two.
- 1:20:54One ball, two strikes.
- 1:20:56Walter Cooper rubbing up the cover with a new ball he just got from umpire lead,
- 1:20:59Ballon-Pant, tosses it out to Johnny Vandermeer.
- 1:21:06If custom is followed, as in past All-Star games, we will have a shift in the umpires
- 1:21:11at the end of this half inning.
- 1:21:16Two ball, two strikes on Bertie Tebbott.
- 1:21:19Johnny Vandermeer doing the pitching.
- 1:21:20All set to work on Tebbott.
- 1:21:21End of his wind-up.
- 1:21:22In comes the pitch.
- 1:21:23Tebbott takes a high one for ball two.
- 1:21:25Two-two the count on Bertie.
- 1:21:34Al Benton is throwing in the bullpen for the American Leaguers and very likely will take
- 1:21:38the mound as we come into the last half of the fifth inning.
- 1:21:42Time call for a moment.
- 1:21:43Tebbott stepped out of the batter's box, now moves back in hitting position.

- 1:21:53Lucky Harris coaching his first points to first base as Tebbott looks down to him.
- 1:21:58In other words, meaning watch this one carefully.
- 1:22:00Get on base.
- 1:22:01Make it be in there, in other words.
- 1:22:07Vandermeer is standing on the hill looking in to get the sign from Walter Cooper.
- 1:22:12Swoops down low into his wind-up.
- 1:22:14In comes the pitch.
- 1:22:15Tebbott lifts a high pop-up curving foul back to first.
- 1:22:18Johnny Mize going over and Walter Cooper Mize under it and makes the catch for the out.

- 1:22:34Johnson has an average on the season of 278.
- 1:22:39Here's the announcement.
- 1:22:48Johnson was on the All-Star squad for the American League in 1935 and 1938.
- 1:22:53Has been at bat five times and has failed a hit.
- 1:22:56Vandermeer into the wind-up in the first pitch to Johnson's.
- 1:22:59He starts to swing, checks it, but it's in there anyway for called strike one.
- 1:23:03The left field plays him toward left and center and left, almost right away and right.
- 1:23:09Johnson holds that bat down with him.
- 1:23:10The handle cocks it high up over his right shoulder.
- 1:23:13Stands in fairly close to the plate, takes slightly spread.
- 1:23:16Vandermeer sets the throw, does.
- 1:23:18Johnson swings and lines one out in the left field for a base hit.
- 1:23:21Joe Medwick goes over to field it.
- 1:23:23There's Johnson taking his turn.
- 1:23:24Medwick throws in to Jimmy Brown at second.
- 1:23:26The ball cut off by Eddie Miller, it's short.
- 1:23:28And on it first is Bob Johnson with a single to left.
- 1:23:32And that's his first hit in an All-Star game, his sixth time at bat.
- 1:23:39And that for the American Lakers is their fifth hit of the evening.
- 1:23:43Four of them off Morton Cooper, the first one off Johnny Vandermeer.
- 1:23:48Claude Paso is throwing in the bullpen for the National Lakers.
- 1:23:51Paso a right-hander.
- 1:23:54Manager Lou Budd drove the Cleveland Indians, steps in a right-handed batter,
- 1:23:57hit a home run the first inning, fly to the racer and center in the third.
- 1:24:00That one hit and two times a bat so far tonight.
- 1:24:02Stretch by Vandermeer, a look over at first, in comes the pitch.
- 1:24:05Budd drove, takes it, a little low, ball one.
- 1:24:08Three to nothing to score, a favor for the American League.
- 1:24:10It's the first half of the fifth inning.
- 1:24:13Outfield shaded toward left for Budd drove in center and left, straight away and right.
- 1:24:18Eddie Miller in about three, four paces, it's short.
- 1:24:20Same for Jimmy Brown at second in double play position.
- 1:24:23Vandermeer takes the stretch, in it comes.
- 1:24:25Pitch is swung on and fouled off by Lou Budd drove,
- 1:24:28a couple of steps forward in the batter's box trying to drive the ball behind the runner in the right field.
- 1:24:35One-on-one to count on Lou.
- 1:24:37Tom Henrik is on deck, one out.
- 1:24:39Bob Johnson on first base.
- 1:24:42Vandermeer has just gone to the rosin bag.
- 1:24:44Now steps back onto the hill, looks in to get the sign from Morton Cooper.
- 1:24:48Takes his stretch, Johnson leads off first.
- 1:24:50Mize on the bag with him, here it is.
- 1:24:52Pitch is swung on, fouled off high to the right of the plate, up over the roof and out of the ballpark.
- 1:24:58One ball, two strikes still to count on Lou Budd drove.
- 1:25:03A youthful skipper of the Cleveland Indians doing a grand job for his American League entry.
- 1:25:10One and two on Lou.
- 1:25:12Johnny Vandermeer has taken his time.
- 1:25:14The guys all set to go.
- 1:25:16Johnny Mize on the bag at first with Bob Johnson who takes a short lead.
- 1:25:20Vandermeer ready, takes a stretch.
- 1:25:24Takes over first and throws.
- 1:25:25Budd drove, swings, sends one right back to the mound.
- 1:25:27Vandermeer takes it, throws to Eddie Miller who falls down to the ground but holds onto the ball.
- 1:25:31Keeps his foot on the bag in time for the out.
- 1:25:33Jimmy Brown is over two and Bob Johnson sliding in, upset Jimmy Brown.
- 1:25:37But Eddie Miller had his foot on the bag as he fell, taking the throw from Vandermeer for the fourth play on Bob Johnson at second.
- 1:25:43No chance for a throw to first attempting to double up Lou Budd drove.
- 1:25:51So there are two outs.
- 1:25:54Budd drove on first base and the banner of Tommy Henrik who doubled in the first inning, scored a moment later.
- 1:26:00Ahead of Rudy York's home run to the right field stands, Henrik popped out to Jimmy Brown at second base in the third inning.
- 1:26:06Hits left handed, stretched by Vandermeer.
- 1:26:08Budd drove has the lead off first.
- 1:26:09In comes the pitch to Henrik.
- 1:26:10He swings and he misses.
- 1:26:11Strike one.
- 1:26:12He tried to check his swing but couldn't.
- 1:26:14Went around.
- 1:26:17Ted Williams is on deck.
- 1:26:18He'll hit next if Tommy Henrik gets on.
- 1:26:22This is Henrik's first appearance in an all-star game.
- 1:26:27Budd drove moving off first.
- 1:26:28Vandermeer takes his stretch, fixes the runner, throws to Henrik and it's in there for call strike two.
- 1:26:33A nice curve over the inside corner, belt high.
- 1:26:36And so Vandermeer stands ahead of the hitter, 0-2.
- 1:26:39No balls, two strikes, 3-0 to score for the American League.
- 1:26:42It's the first half of the fifth inning of this 10th annual All-Star Classic.
- 1:26:49Vandermeer okays the sign.
- 1:26:50Budd drove moves way off first.
- 1:26:52Johnny throws in to Henrik who swings and lifts a foul up over our mutual booth up into the upper deck.
- 1:26:59To the left of home plate, count remains, no balls, two strikes.
- 1:27:04Henrik chokes the bat just about an inch.
- 1:27:06Stands deep in the batter's box, fairly close to the plate.
- 1:27:10Drives a long ball, good full hitter.
- 1:27:15Here it is.
- 1:27:16Henrik takes it, it's high for ball one.
- 1:27:18Tommy can also punch him to left field pretty well so that the outfield plays him straight away.
- 1:27:26Johnny Maez on it first with Budd drove two men out.
- 1:27:29One ball, two strikes on Tommy Henrik the batter.
- 1:27:33Vandermeer ready to work now.
- 1:27:34Takes his stretch, Budd drove moving off first.
- 1:27:36Here it is.
- 1:27:37Henrik swings and he misses.
- 1:27:38The ball is dropped by Cooper but he picks it up, tags out Tommy Henrik.
- 1:27:42Strikeout number three for Johnny Vandermeer.
- 1:27:46And that's all for the American League in the first half of the fifth inning.
- 1:27:51No runs, one hit, no errors for the National Leaguers.
- 1:27:55One man left on.
- 1:27:56And the score at the end of four and one half innings, 3-0 in favor of the American League.
- 1:28:02And sudden onslaught by the American Leaguers in the first inning,
- 1:28:06which saw Lou Budd drove lead off of the home run.
- 1:28:08Tommy Henrik double and Rudy York to follow with the home run,
- 1:28:11has given the American Leaguers their 3-0 lead.
- 1:28:15And so as we come into the last half of the fifth inning,
- 1:28:18we're going to have a new pitcher for the American Leaguers.
- 1:28:21Budd Chandler worked the first four innings, allowed only two hits and blanking the National League.
- 1:28:26And it's going to be Big Al Benton of the Detroit Tigers.
- 1:28:30Al Benton has been in 17 games so far this season for Del Baker.
- 1:28:33He's won six and lost five.
- 1:28:36Has pitched 129 in two-thirds innings, has allowed 111 hits, walked 40, struck out 58.
- 1:28:46And we're going to have a change in umpires as we indicated to you a moment ago.
- 1:28:50That seems to be the tradition in all-star games.
- 1:28:53We're watching to see just what the lineup is going to be in the way of umpires
- 1:28:58as we get ready for more action here in the last half of the fifth.
- 1:29:01The announcement over the public address system was concerning the coming into the game of Al Benton.
- 1:29:07Bill McGowan is going to work back to the plate now,
- 1:29:09and Lee Ballenpant is going to move down to third base.
- 1:29:13Al Barlich has moved over to first base, and Ernie Stewart of the American League will umpire at second base.
- 1:29:21Al Barlich has moved over to second base, and Lee Ballenpant of the American League has moved over to third base.
- 1:29:31So there's the new alignment of umpires.
- 1:29:33Lee Ballenpant of the National League, who started back to the plate and worked first four and a half innings, has gone down to third.
- 1:29:38Bill McGowan of the American League, who was at third, has come in back to the plate.
- 1:29:41Al Barlich, who started umpiring at second base of the National League, has moved over to first.
- 1:29:45And Ernie Stewart of the American League, who was umpiring at first, has moved over to second.
- 1:29:49Joe Medwick leads off for the National League, as we come into the last half of the fifth inning.
- 1:29:53He'll be followed by Walker Cooper and then Eddie Miller.
- 1:29:56Medwick bats right-handed, grounded out to York, to Chandler, who covered in the second inning.
- 1:30:00Benton into the windup, throws, first pitch is high for ball one.
- 1:30:03Three to nothing favor the American League.
- 1:30:05It's the last half of the fifth inning.
- 1:30:08Bill McKechnie of Cincinnati still coaching at third.
- 1:30:11Frankie Frisch of Pittsburgh at first.
- 1:30:13Benton throws. Medwick takes it, strike one, call a fastball, let her hide.
- 1:30:17One-on-one to count on Joe, playing great ball for the Brooklyn Dodgers this year.
- 1:30:22Benton looks in to get the sign from Bertie Tebbott.
- 1:30:24Detroit battery right now.
- 1:30:27Benton ready, throws. Medwick swings and fouls it off.
- 1:30:30Back to the plate, high. Up over the roof and out of the ballpark.
- 1:30:36One ball, two strikes on Joe Medwick.
- 1:30:40Al Benton has a new ball.
- 1:30:42Ready to work with it.
- 1:30:43Tebbott's into the cross to give Al the sign.
- 1:30:45Great big fellow.
- 1:30:47Enders windup, throws, Medwick.
- 1:30:49Ducks under a high pitch for ball two.
- 1:30:53Ducky ducked under that one. Two to the count on Medwick.
- 1:31:01Joe stands in close to the plate.
- 1:31:04Benton ready, throws overhand.
- 1:31:06There's a pitch swung on and Keltner comes up with a great one-handed stop
- 1:31:09to throw to York in time for the outs.
- 1:31:16Medwick drove one which appeared headed between Keltner and Budgrove,
- 1:31:20but Keltner went to his left, came up with a one-handed glove-handed pick-up
- 1:31:23of his vicious boundary, and then threw over to York in time to retire Medwick
- 1:31:27and rob him of a base hit.
- 1:31:29Here's Walker Cooper stepping in.
- 1:31:31Cardinal catcher single to right in the third inning for the first National League
- 1:31:34hit of the night. They've only had two.
- 1:31:37That's right-handed.
- 1:31:39Al Benton ready for the first pitch. Here it is.
- 1:31:41High inside, ball one.
- 1:31:44There is nothing to score. Play for the American League.
- 1:31:46It's the last half of the fifth inning.
- 1:31:50Eddie Miller is on deck.
- 1:31:52Walker Cooper ready. Here it is.
- 1:31:54He doesn't mean to swing on that one, but does.
- 1:31:56The ball rolls down the third baseline.
- 1:31:57Tebich picks it up, throws over to first.
- 1:31:59In time for the out on a very nice play.
- 1:32:05Walker Cooper meant to check his swing.
- 1:32:08Couldn't the ball hit the bat and rolled down the third baseline.
- 1:32:12Tebich raced out, grabbed it, wheeled around through over to York.
- 1:32:15In time to retire Cooper for the second out.
- 1:32:19So there have been two swell defensive plays on the part of the American League
- 1:32:22here in the last half of the fifth inning to retire the first two men.
- 1:32:25Up now is Eddie Miller of the Boston Braves who struck out in the third inning.
- 1:32:30Up for his second time. Bat's right-handed.
- 1:32:32Al Benton rocks in the box, throws.
- 1:32:33Miller swings, hence hits this one fast amount out to short.
- 1:32:36But drew up with it. There's a throw to York.
- 1:32:38In time for the out.
- 1:32:40And so that's all for the National League in the last half of the fifth inning.
- 1:32:43Out in order. No runs, no hits, no errors.
- 1:32:46Nobody left on base.
- 1:32:47At the end of five innings of play, the score remains three to nothing in favor of the American League.
- 1:32:53Going into the first half of the sixth inning, we'll have Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, and Rudy York coming up in that order for the American League.
- 1:33:00Bill McKechnie, manager of the Cincinnati Reds, stops at the plate to talk to Bill McGowan for a moment.
- 1:33:05Ted Williams, who has a couple of bats, swinging them from shoulder to shoulder,
- 1:33:08gets around with Bill McKechnie as he moves over now to the National League bench.
- 1:33:13Art Fletcher, who's coaching a third for the American League, goes down to talk to Lee Ballenfant, back at third base,
- 1:33:19while Johnny Van Der Meer tosses a few in from the mound.
- 1:33:22For those of you who might have tuned in late
- 1:33:25and are wondering how the American League achieved their three-nothing advantage,
- 1:33:30we'll repeat that Lou Bundrow, in the first inning, leadoff man for the American League,
- 1:33:35drove one up into the left field stands for a home run.
- 1:33:38Morton Cooper was pitching at the time.
- 1:33:40Tommy Henrik followed with a double to right, and then after Cooper had retired,
- 1:33:44Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio, Rudy York, drove one into the right field stands for a home run, scoring Henrik ahead of him.
- 1:33:51That's been all of the offensive firework so far in this game.
- 1:33:56Since that time, it's been quite a pitching duel.
- 1:33:59Morton Cooper worked the first three innings, allowed four hits.
- 1:34:02They should know class has struck out one, gave up three runs.
- 1:34:04Johnny Van Der Meer came in on the fourth inning and has been pitching ever since.
- 1:34:08Struck out three men, and has allowed only one hit.
- 1:34:11Ted Williams steps in. He flied to Medwick and left field in the first inning, single to right in the third.
- 1:34:16He's had one hit and two times at bat tonight.
- 1:34:19Van Der Meer goes into the windup. Here's the first pitch to Williams.
- 1:34:22Ted takes it. It's in there for a called strike.
- 1:34:25Started to swing, checked his throw, and fell away from the plate.
- 1:34:29One-one the count on Ted. Outfield pulled a little bit toward right for him.
- 1:34:34Van Der Meer looks in to get the sign from Walker Cooper.
- 1:34:37Swoops down low as he starts into his windup, whips the left arm around.
- 1:34:40Williams takes a change of pace pitch high for ball one.
- 1:34:43One-one the count.
- 1:34:47Joe DiMaggio on deck, down on one knee, to the left of the plate watching the action.
- 1:34:53Van Der Meer is working very slowly, no hurry.
- 1:34:56Nice set for the one-one pitch into Williams. Williams ready. Here it is.
- 1:34:59Williams swings and misses. Strike two.
- 1:35:02One ball, two strikes on Ted.
- 1:35:05Fans get a big kick out of seeing fellows like Williams, DiMaggio, and other sluggers swing and miss.
- 1:35:12Van Der Meer stands a bit ahead of Williams. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:35:16He's ready to work.
- 1:35:18Here it comes, low outside, ball two.
- 1:35:21Two-two the count on Williams.
- 1:35:24Don't forget the second all-star game will be played at Cleveland tomorrow night,
- 1:35:30broadcast of which will come to you exclusively over the mutual network.
- 1:35:36Two-two the count now on Ted Williams.
- 1:35:38Van Der Meer taking his time, mops his brow.
- 1:35:41Nooks in to get the sign from Cooper.
- 1:35:43Williams stands in to that plate, swinging the bat around.
- 1:35:46Van Der Meer ready to work. Here it is.
- 1:35:48Williams moves away from a high inside pitch for ball three.
- 1:35:51So we have a full count on Ted, three and two.
- 1:35:53And Van Der Meer has gotten into this situation a number of hitters since he's been on the ball game.
- 1:35:58Three-two situations.
- 1:36:04He hasn't suffered too much from it as yet though.
- 1:36:07All set for the payoff pitch to Williams.
- 1:36:09Ted digs in, Van Der Meer throws, Williams swings and drives a fly ball out in the center field.
- 1:36:14Pete Reiser going back deep over toward right center, under it, waiting, and he makes the catch for the out.
- 1:36:21One away for the American League.
- 1:36:24First half to sixth inning, three to nothing to score a favor with the American League.
- 1:36:27And here is Joe DiMaggio, the Yankee Clipper, who grounded out to Archie Vaughn
- 1:36:31in third in the first inning and fouled out to walk the Clipper back to the plate in the third.
- 1:36:39Joe has had four hits and 27 times of bat in all-star competition, including one double and one home run.
- 1:36:48Van Der Meer's first pitch to Joe.
- 1:36:50He swings him as his strike one, he's swung hard.
- 1:36:54This is the seventh all-star game for DiMaggio.
- 1:37:00One out, nobody on.
- 1:37:04DiMaggio the hitter, Rudy York on deck.
- 1:37:06Van Der Meer ready.
- 1:37:08Here's the pitch.
- 1:37:09DiMaggio takes it inside, ball one, fast pitch, almost got the inside corner but not quite.
- 1:37:14One to one, the count on Joe.
- 1:37:20Stands that plate to the bat, cocked up over his right shoulder, wide open stance, speech spread very wide.
- 1:37:25Outfield pulled way over toward left and deep.
- 1:37:27Van Der Meer throws, DiMaggio swings and drives this one on the ground, off the glove of Johnny Mize.
- 1:37:31Out in the right field, the ball deflects.
- 1:37:34Mallott comes in to field it.
- 1:37:36DiMaggio holds on first and is credited with a base hit.
- 1:37:39His fifth in all-star competition.
- 1:37:43It was a vicious bounder.
- 1:37:45With the right of Johnny Mize, he got his glove on it but couldn't hold on to it, bounced off his glove in the short right for a single.
- 1:37:51That's the sixth hit for the American Lakers.
- 1:37:54Four of them off, Morton Cooper worked first three innings.
- 1:37:57Second off, Johnny Van Der Meer who came in on the fourth and is now working his third inning.
- 1:38:01Up at the plate steps Rudy York who hit a home run in the first inning with Tommy Henrik aboard and then struck out in the fourth inning, first time Van Der Meer pitched against him.
- 1:38:09York struck his home run off Morton Cooper.
- 1:38:12Van Der Meer is taking his time out back of the hill looking around at the outfield, hitching up his trousers.
- 1:38:17York digs in, stands deep in the batter's box in close to the plate, outfield shaded toward left.
- 1:38:21Joe DiMaggio takes the lead off first, Johnny Mize on the bag, Van Der Meer into the stretch, one out.
- 1:38:27Look at the runner. Here's the pitch to York.
- 1:38:29He takes it and it's in there for a called strike.
- 1:38:32Went into a bunting motion that brought Archie Vaughn racing in from third.
- 1:38:36Eddie Miller at short walks over near second, hollers something over to Jimmy Brown to get the signal straight.
- 1:38:40Double play combination.
- 1:38:44DiMaggio moves off first again, Van Der Meer into the stretch.
- 1:38:47York digs in with the plate.
- 1:38:49Van Der Meer throws, York swings and sends a ground ball down to Vaughn.
- 1:38:52Vaughn over to Jimmy Brown who drops the ball and all hands are safe.
- 1:39:02Rudy York grounded to Archie Vaughn who threw over to Jimmy Brown and Jimmy Brown dropped the ball and it's an error charge to the Cardinals' second baseman,
- 1:39:11enabling Joe DiMaggio to go safe at second and York is safe at first of course on the feeler's choice, which resulted in an error.
- 1:39:19So the American Leaguers are threatening once again.
- 1:39:22Runners on first and second, one out, three to nothing to score.
- 1:39:26It's the first half of the sixth inning and the batter is Joe Gordon who struck out in the first inning, took a third called strike in the fourth.
- 1:39:31In other words, he struck out twice in two occurrences.
- 1:39:34DiMaggio leads off second.
- 1:39:36Rudy York moves off first.
- 1:39:38Van Der Meer takes the stretch, looks back at second and throws.
- 1:39:41Gordon swings and misses. Strike one, he's swung hard.
- 1:39:44Upfield over toward left for Gordon and deep.
- 1:39:47It's Medwick in left, Reiser in center, Otten right.
- 1:39:50The only changes we've had in the starting lineups have been in the Department of Pitching.
- 1:39:57Indian field, it's Vaughn at third, Miller at short, Brown on second, Myers on first.
- 1:40:02Van Der Meer throws high, ball one to Gordon, one and one to count.
- 1:40:06Kenny Keltner's on deck, one out, three to nothing in favor of the American League.

- 1:40:12Joe DiMaggio on second base, Rudy York on first base.
- 1:40:16Johnny Myers playing a deep first, not on the bag at all with York who has a big lead off first.
- 1:40:22Slipping into second base was Eddie Miller trying to draw a throw from Van Der Meer,
- 1:40:26but Van Der Meer did not throw down. Joe DiMaggio ducked back into the bag.
- 1:40:31Miller goes back to a normal short position.
- 1:40:33Van Der Meer takes the stretch, looks back at second.
- 1:40:35Here's the pitch to Gordon. Joe takes it, it's high for ball two.
- 1:40:38Two and one to count on Gordon.
- 1:40:41The fly steps out of the batter's box, gets a handful of dirt.
- 1:40:44Licks around at outfetcher, coaching at third, then moves back in hitting position.
- 1:40:48Bucky Harris coaching at first, is watching first base for Rudy York who moves way off the bag.
- 1:40:53Johnny Myers playing a deep first.
- 1:40:55Van Der Meer ready.
- 1:40:57Here's the pitch to Gordon. Joe swings, he misses. Strike two.
- 1:41:00Two to the count on Gordon.
- 1:41:02Struck out twice already in his two previous appearances.
- 1:41:07There's no activity in either bullpen right now.
- 1:41:12Since the first inning, this game has settled down into a real pitching duel.
- 1:41:15This has been the first real offensive threat since the first inning
- 1:41:18in which the American League has got all three runs.
- 1:41:21Van Der Meer ready.
- 1:41:24Two-two pitch to Gordon. Joe swings and misses.
- 1:41:26The ball is brought by Cooper, but of course Gordon hasn't run at all.
- 1:41:30And that's the third time in a row that Gordon has struck out.
- 1:41:34That's the fourth strikeout for Johnny Van Der Meer.
- 1:41:37Two outs, and here is Kenny Keltner stepping in.
- 1:41:40He grounded out to Eddie Miller in the second inning and popped out to Miller short in the fourth inning.
- 1:41:48Joe Gordon, who's been burning up the American League all season,
- 1:41:52strikes out all three times he's been at the plate so far tonight.
- 1:41:57Van Der Meer bearing down, trying to get out of the situation.
- 1:42:00DiMaggio on second.
- 1:42:01York on first.
- 1:42:02Runners lead off.
- 1:42:03Two down, first half of sixth inning.

- 1:42:06Right-handed hitter.
- 1:42:07First pitch to him.
- 1:42:08He swings and misses.
- 1:42:09Strike one.
- 1:42:13On deck is Bertie Tebbott.
- 1:42:14He'll hit next if Keltner gets on.
- 1:42:16Cleveland third baseman stands up at that plate.
- 1:42:18Deep in the batter's box, in close to the plate.
- 1:42:22Knee slightly bent, holds that bat down on the end of the handle and straight up and down in front of his body.
- 1:42:26Van Der Meer throws.
- 1:42:27Keltner takes it high for ball one.
- 1:42:29One-on-one the count.
- 1:42:31Three to nothing to score.
- 1:42:32Favour the American League.
- 1:42:33First half of the sixth inning.
- 1:42:36DiMaggio goes back to second.
- 1:42:37York to first.
- 1:42:39Now runners lead off their respective bases.
- 1:42:41DiMaggio comes way off second.
- 1:42:42York way off first.
- 1:42:43Van Der Meer into the stretch.
- 1:42:44Keltner sets the plate.
- 1:42:45Here it is.
- 1:42:46Keltner swings and lifts a high pop-up out toward the mound.
- 1:42:49Running in.
- 1:42:50There's Archie Vaughn near the mound, waving everybody away.
- 1:42:52And he makes the catch for the out.
- 1:42:54And Johnny Van Der Meer pitched himself out of that one.
- 1:42:58And so for the American League in the first half of the sixth inning.
- 1:43:00No runs.
- 1:43:02One hit.
- 1:43:04Listen to the hand for Van Der Meer.
- 1:43:06For the American League in the first half of the sixth inning.

- 1:43:23And that error, charged to Jimmy Brown, is the first error of the game.

- 1:46:24Vaughn hit to Gordon and threw to Budro, who delivered over to York for the double play.
- 1:46:28Vaughn digs in.
- 1:46:30The bat's left-handed.
- 1:46:32Benton into the windup.
- 1:46:33Here's the pitch.
- 1:46:34Vaughn takes it outside for ball one.
- 1:46:42Benton looks in to get the sign from Tebbitz, working rapidly.
- 1:46:46Pitches.
- 1:46:47Vaughn takes a fast one low for ball two.
- 1:46:49Outfield pulled over toward right, slightly toward right, and center right,
- 1:46:52almost right of way and left.
- 1:46:54Claude Paso throwing to the bullpen for the National Leaguers.
- 1:46:58Benton ready pitches.
- 1:47:00Vaughn looks at one over the outside corner for a called strike.
- 1:47:03Plenty of activity in the American League bullpen.
- 1:47:05Two pitchers warming up, one of whom is a left-hander, Cotton Ed Smith of the Chicago White Sox.
- 1:47:11Two balls, one strike on Archie Vaughn, two men out.
- 1:47:13Here it is.
- 1:47:14Vaughn takes it low inside for ball three.
- 1:47:17It's the last half of the sixth inning, the American League out in front by a score of three to nothing.
- 1:47:22All the damage having come in the first inning.
- 1:47:26Benton ready for the 3-1 pitch to Vaughn.
- 1:47:28Vaughn takes it and it's in there for called strike two.
- 1:47:30Vaughn started down toward first base, turns around to argue with umpire Bill McGowan.
- 1:47:34Bill McKechnie raises a howl at third, but there's no argument.
- 1:47:38Frankie Frisch stands at first with his hands on his hips looking in with a bit of a scowl's plate.
- 1:47:43Three into the count now on Vaughn.
- 1:47:45Benton ready.
- 1:47:46Here's the payoff pitch.
- 1:47:47Vaughn takes it and it's inside for ball four.
- 1:47:49And Vaughn walks.
- 1:47:51And here's Pete Reiser stepping up.
- 1:47:54That's the first pass issued by Benton and the first national leaguer to have received a base on balls tonight.
- 1:48:01And as a matter of fact, that's the first walk in the ball game.
- 1:48:07Pete Reiser steps in.
- 1:48:08He grounded out to Gordon in the first inning.
- 1:48:10Had himself an infield hit in the fourth.
- 1:48:12That's left-handed.
- 1:48:13Hitting on the season at 3-61.
- 1:48:16Benton takes the stretch.
- 1:48:17Here it is.
- 1:48:18Reiser moves away from a low inside pitch.
- 1:48:20Ball one is into the dirt.
- 1:48:22Got away from Tebich a couple of feet, but not far enough to permit Archie Vaughn risking the chance of going down to second base.
- 1:48:29Two men out now.
- 1:48:31Reiser the batter.
- 1:48:32Johnny Mai is on deck.
- 1:48:34Archie Vaughn on at first base.
- 1:48:36Benton takes the stretch.
- 1:48:39Here it is.
- 1:48:40Reiser swings and foul-tips it for strike one.
- 1:48:42He really took a terrific cut at that pitch.
- 1:48:441-1 the count on Petey.
- 1:48:46Keltner at third is playing way over towards short.
- 1:48:52Gordon the deep second on the edge of the outfield grass.
- 1:48:54Stretch by Benton.
- 1:48:56Here it is.
- 1:48:57Reiser swings and drives one out of the center field.
- 1:48:58There goes Joe DiMaggio way back, way back getting under it and making the catch for the out.
- 1:49:02A drive good for some 400 feet.
- 1:49:04And so that's all for the National League in the last half of the sixth inning.
- 1:49:09No runs, one hit, no American League errors.
- 1:49:14One man left on base.
- 1:49:16And so that brings us to the end of the sixth inning mark where the American League leading 3-0 getting their three runs in the first inning on a home run by Lou Budrow, a double by Henrik and a home run by Rudy York.
- 1:49:29Totals at the end of six innings for the American League.
- 1:49:34Three runs, six hits, no errors, four men left on.
- 1:49:39For the National League, no runs, three hits, one error, and three men left on base.
- 1:49:46Morton Cooper was the starting pitcher for the National League, worked the first three innings, allowed four hits, issued no passes, struck out one, allowed three runs.
- 1:49:54Johnny Vandermeer relieved him, worked the next three innings, during which time he allowed two hits, issued no passes, struck out four, and did not allow any runs.
- 1:50:04Spud Chandler was the starting pitcher for the American League, worked the first four innings, allowed two hits, issued no passes, struck out two, and allowed no runs.
- 1:50:12Al Benton has been in there since he relieved Chandler in the fifth inning.
- 1:50:17And he's still in the ballgame as yet.
- 1:50:19So we won't give you his record until he will depart from the ballgame.
- 1:50:23So at the end of six innings, it's three to nothing for the American League.
- 1:50:26And now, taking over, as we go into the seventh inning, and to describe the remainder of the ballgame for you, is Bob Ellison, who covers the games of the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago White Sox, or the Mutual Station in Chicago.
- 1:50:39Here he is, Bob Ellison.
- 1:50:42Thank you very much, Mel Allen.
- 1:50:44Good evening, friends.
- 1:50:45We have quite a ballgame on our hands here in this number 10 game in the All-Star Series, which this year, as you know, is being played here in the Polo Grounds in New York.
- 1:50:54And as we go into the first half of the seventh inning, the National League is sending in a brand new team at third base, Elliot of Pittsburgh, at short, Reese of Brooklyn, at second, Herman of Brooklyn, at first, McCormick of the Reds, the catcher, Lombardi, the pitcher, Passaw, the outfield.
- 1:51:12Here come the announcements now on the changes.
- 1:51:30Fans, we're going to interrupt the public address system.
- 1:51:33I know it's kind of hard to listen to two people at once, but they're going to start this seventh inning, so I want to give it to you.
- 1:51:38Eno Slaughter is in the ballgame of St. Louis in left field, Terry Moore in center field, Otis staying in right field.
- 1:51:50The entire National League ball club has changed, and the first man to bat for the American League, there's a hand for Reese as he's announced, is going to be Bertie Tettis.
- 1:51:58He's been up twice, he's struck out, and he popped up, and here's Claude Passaw, the Cubs, getting ready with the first pitch, and it's an attempted punt, and he misses the ball for a strike.
- 1:52:07Passaw has had a very fine record this year. He's taken part in 16 ballgames. He's won 12, he's lost five, he's pitched 154 innings, and he's taken part in 14 complete games out of 16 efforts.
- 1:52:24He's had 45 strikeouts, by the way. Here's the next pitch to Bertie Tettis. There's a swing and a miss, a curve ball in around his knees, and it's two strikes.
- 1:52:33There's nobody on and nobody out here in the seventh. The American League leads three to nothing, but the National League is still within striking distance, and the National League partisans here in the Polar Grounds in New York are still hoping that the National League will unload some of that power and really get back in this ballgame.
- 1:52:47The American League is not out of reach. It's just three to nothing. Two strikes on Tebbitz. Here comes the next pitch. It's a strike, and it's...
- 1:52:57He tried to back away from a pitch that was inside. It's a called strike. It looked at first as though it might have hit his bat, but the umpire says no, and Tebbitz is out on strikes.
- 1:53:05So it is a strikeout for Passaw, and that is seven strikeouts in all tonight.
- 1:53:13There were two strikeouts for Cooper, four for Van Dameren, and one for Passaw. Van Dameren was really hot out there tonight.
- 1:53:19Now the next man to come up is Big Al Benton of Detroit. Big right-hander, a massive fellow with a number 19 in the back of his gray uniform.
- 1:53:27Claude Passaw of the Cubs out there in the center of the diamond.
- 1:53:34Here's the first pitch. He swings and hits a hopper down the third baseline. Elliott coming fast. There goes the peg. He's out. Elliott to McCormick, and there's two gone.
- 1:53:42Elliott, a reformed outfielder, by the way, has played great ball for Frankie Bricius Pittsburgh Pirates. As Frankie said, why the kid looks like he's been in there for years.
- 1:53:50Elliott's played bang-up ball at third base for Pittsburgh. Now that's two gone.
- 1:53:57We're back to the top of the batting order for the American League, and here's Lou Bedro. He's been up three times. He hit a home run. He flied out, and he forced a runner the third time.
- 1:54:05So he's up for his fourth time, and there's a high fly ball to left field. Country slaughter getting under this ball, going to his right. He should get it. It's very high, and he caught it to retire the side.
- 1:54:14And so before the right-hand shoots of Claude Passaw, the American League goes down 1-2-3 in the first half of the seventh inning. Now there's a big roar from the crowd.
- 1:54:26The National League pilots are standing in the last half of the seventh. The National League, as you know, is the home team here tonight.
- 1:54:32The American League has the lead in this series of six games to three, and it's been a wonderful ball game tonight.
- 1:54:37And now we're going to see if there are any changes for the American League. Yes, there are going to be some changes.
- 1:54:47Let's see. No, the American League is going to stay fat. The American League is standing fat with Williams in left field, DiMaggio in center field, Henrik in right field,
- 1:54:56Keltner at third, Lou Bedro at short, at second base, Joe Gordon, and at first base, Rudy York. The catcher is Bertie Tebbott, and the pitcher is Al Bent.
- 1:55:04Going into the last half of the seventh, fans, the score here in New York in the 10th annual All-Star Game, the American League 3 and the National League nothing.
- 1:55:12Two home runs in the first inning by the American League did the trick. Now here's Frank McCormick coming up for the first time.
- 1:55:18Johnny Mize, who he succeeded at first base, batted twice tonight. The first time he bounced out to the first baseman and the second time he flied out to right field.
- 1:55:26And here is Frank McCormick coming up to the plate. He is a right-handed hitter.
- 1:55:33Frank McCormick batting 249 for the season. He's hit 10 home runs and he's batted in 50 runs. Al Benton gets all set. Here it is. It's a spike.
- 1:55:41It's right across his knees, a very sharp curve. And this Benton has really got a curve too. He's got one he can throw around the corner of a building.
- 1:55:48He gets all set again. Watch it now. Nobody on and nobody out. Here it is. It's a ball. It's too low that time. McCormick stepped up on the ball and let it go by, and it's low for a ball.
- 1:55:59National League trying to get a rally underway. They're still trailing by three runs here in New York.
- 1:56:04But as you know, a ball game is never over until the last man is out. There's a bouncing ball to short. Madrow coming in to the ball. There goes the peg. He's out.
- 1:56:11Madrow to York and there's one gone. Madrow moved in about five steps to come up with McCormick's hopper and to throw him out.
- 1:56:17Now the American Leaguers pepper that ball around the infield. There's one gone.
- 1:56:25Here's little Mel out.
- 1:56:28The grand little manager of the New York Giants and perhaps one of the best like ballplayers of all time. Not only by the fans, those of you listening in who make up the baseball audience, but by the players too.
- 1:56:41Mel is liked by everybody. Here he is up in there, a left handed hitter. One gone and nobody out. There is a strike, a slow curve over the inside corner at the way.
- 1:56:50The first time up, out struck out. And the second time he bounced out to Gordon.
- 1:56:55National League batting in the last half of the seventh. They're trailing by three runs. Here comes a slow ball. It's just a bit outside a ball.
- 1:57:02That pitch was around his waist and it just missed the corner by an inch. Bill McKenney coaching down here at third for the National League.
- 1:57:09Frankie Pritch, the old Fordham Flash over there at first. Nobody on and one gone in the last half of the seventh. There it is.
- 1:57:15There's a swing and a miss and that was a typical hot swing. Right foot up in the air. You wonder where he gets that power. That time he swung around hard and missed it.
- 1:57:24And so it is two strikes. Ball one and strike two on little Mel. Benton has a sign from Bertie Tebbitz. He's winding up. Here it comes.
- 1:57:32It's a ball. He just missed the corner that time with a pretty pitch and the kind of a pitch that a batter with two strikes on him might want to go after.
- 1:57:40But Mel, who's got a keen eye up there, didn't go for it. It's ball two and strike two for up. Here comes the pitch.
- 1:57:47It's a swing and a foul on the ground down here to our left.
- 1:57:52The American Lakers talking up out there in the infield and the American League outfield is playing straight away.
- 1:57:57This fellow out is a kind of a batter. You have to play every place for him. You can't swing your outfield or swing your infield or swing anything.
- 1:58:03And they're playing him absolutely on the diamond straight away. The outfield and infield. But you're getting set again. Here comes the next one to watch.
- 1:58:10He struck him out. He went for a fastball right across his knees and he struck him out. Boy, that was a beauty that time.
- 1:58:17Very fast and right in around his knees and he went down swinging.
- 1:58:27Well, that's three times that the National Leaguers have gone down via the strikeout route tonight.
- 1:58:33Here's the left-hand hitter up. It's Slaughter.
- 1:58:36Country Slaughter, the left fielder playing in left field, the regular right fielder for the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 1:58:42Slaughter's average is 284. He's hit four home runs and he's had 22 runs batted in. The first pitch was a ball knee-high.
- 1:58:49Here comes the next pitch to Slaughter. He swings, hits a high hopper. It's going to drop behind the pitcher. Gordon making the play. He's safe. He beat it off for a hit.
- 1:58:56Fans, that was that kind of a high hopping ball. It hit in front of the pitcher's box, went high into the air, bounced behind him.
- 1:59:03The pitcher couldn't make the play. Gordon came in, grabbed that ball and fired it with the same motion. But Slaughter had it beaten out for a hit.
- 1:59:10So the National League has another hit. And that is a total of four hits for the night.
- 1:59:15And it brings up Big Ernie Lombardi, one of the grandest characters in baseball. Ernie Lombardi.
- 1:59:24Here's Big Ernie. He did some great work for Cincinnati for years. He's a hard worker. He's done some fine work this year for the Boston Braves.
- 1:59:33Great big lumbering sort of a fella. He led the National League a few years ago.
- 1:59:37And you know the amazing thing about Lombardi is that a fella with his weight and he's so slow afoot that he could lead the league.
- 1:59:43It's all the more credit to his batting eye because Lombardi doesn't get any of those rollers or any of those kind of balls that the infielders knock down and he beats them out for hits.
- 1:59:51He can't do it. He's too slow. Every time he hits that ball for a hit, he's got to hit it on the beam. First pitch was wide.
- 1:59:58The outfield is playing him just a little bit over to the left.
- 2:00:01Here's the next pitch. Lomb swings and misses a sharp curve in across his knees and it's one and one.
- 2:00:07Ernie Lombardi batting for the National League. There's a man on first and there's two gone.
- 2:00:11The ball game is in the last half of the seventh. National League trailing by three runs.
- 2:00:15Benton getting set. Here's the next pitch. There's a wallop but it's foul.
- 2:00:19Ernie Lombardi hit one up against the top of the roof down the left field line but to the left side of the foul line and it was a foul ball.
- 2:00:28Ernie gave it a ride but foul and now the catcher, Bertie Tebbots, is going out to talk to Benton and they're standing halfway between the plate and the pitcher's box
- 2:00:35just having a chat while Lombardi in his white uniform stands up there at the plate.
- 2:00:40National League trails by three. It's the American League three and the National nothing in the last half of the seventh at New York.
- 2:00:47Big Al Benton, second pitcher for the American League tonight, is on the mound.
- 2:00:53Gets all ready again. Here's the next one and it's a ball. It broke outside knee-high and it's two and two.
- 2:00:59Ernie started to go for that pitch. It looked like it was going to be pretty good at first but he let it go by.
- 2:01:04Two pitchers are in the bullpen, Euson and Smith, for the American League.
- 2:01:09Ball two, strike two for Lombardi. Here it comes. It's a ball very far outside. There is no doubt about it.
- 2:01:15And it's ball three and strike two. So Ernie is on the verge of a walk.
- 2:01:20Next man to come up will be the Dodger shortstop, Pee-wee Reese.
- 2:01:25Lomb is going to get a 3-2 pitch to swing at. Here it comes. There's ball for it. Slow and it puts two men on.
- 2:01:32Here's Reese coming up for the National League.
- 2:01:37Fans, that's the second walk of the night. That's the second walk.
- 2:01:41It puts a man on first and a man on second and brings up Reese with two gone.
- 2:01:47Reese of Brooklyn, who has just gone in a shortstop, is batting.
- 2:01:52And his average for the year is 230. He's hit one homer and he has 20 runs batted in.
- 2:01:59Reese up with two men on and two out in the last half of the seventh.
- 2:02:03And the National League partisans are making some noise here in the Polo Ground.
- 2:02:06Here's the pitch and Reese takes it. It's a strike. It's right across his knee.
- 2:02:12By the way, Mel was just telling me that Reese hits well here in the Polo Grounds. Mel of course sees all these games in New York.
- 2:02:18Well, the National League could really use a hit in this spot. They have two men on and two out.
- 2:02:22Here comes the next pitch and it's very wide. They wasted a pitch that time.
- 2:02:25And Bertie Tebbott's cocked his arm as though he was going to throw that ball to first, but he held it.
- 2:02:30So it's one and one on Reese. Two men on and two out in the last half of the seventh as the National League fights hard here in New York to come from behind.
- 2:02:41Al Benton getting his sign out there again. Here's the next one. There is a ball.
- 2:02:44It missed the corner knee high and it's ball two and strike one for Reese.
- 2:02:52Remember that tomorrow night, Newt will bring you the big game from Cleveland, the big municipal stadium at 8.45.
- 2:02:58Here comes the next pitch. Reese swings and there's a line drive and Bedro caught that ball going to his left.
- 2:03:03Bedro caught that ball going to his left to retire the side.
- 2:03:07A very hard hit ball fans. Bedro, the shortstop, went to his left and just near second base he reached out and caught that ball above his knees.
- 2:03:15It was a well hit ball and Bedro made a nice play on it to retire the side.
- 2:03:20And so that National League threat is over and it is no runs and one hit and the ballgame is going into the first half of the eighth.
- 2:03:31By the way, the attendance tonight is in the neighborhood of 35,000. Secretary Brannick of the Giants sent up the figures which are in the neighborhood of $100,000.
- 2:03:40The Treasury Department will announce the exact figures in a day or so.
- 2:03:44All the money from this ballgame and all the money from the game tomorrow night, the first $100,000 will be used for the Ball and Bat Fund,
- 2:03:53which is to provide baseballs and bats and gloves for all the camps in the United States.
- 2:03:58After that, all the rest of the money will go to the Navy and the Army Relief Fund.
- 2:04:06Fans, we're at the end of seven innings here in New York City in the All-Star Game, the American League 3, the National League nothing,
- 2:04:13and now we're going to pause briefly for station identification. This is the Mutual Broadcasting System.
- 2:04:20This is WGN, the voice of the people, Chicago.
- 2:04:28Now this is Bob Elson talking to you again from the Polar Grounds of New York. We're all set to go into the eighth inning of this ballgame.
- 2:04:37Mutual Broadcasting System brings you exclusive coverage of one of America's outstanding sports classics, the All-Star Game.
- 2:04:45The first man to bat for the American League is Tommy Henrik, a left-handed hitter. He's stepping up in there now.
- 2:04:50He's been up three times. He's had one hit and he's facing Passau as we start the eighth, with the American League still out in front by a 3-0 score.
- 2:04:58The outfielder is playing Henrik just about normal, maybe around just a step or two to the right.
- 2:05:03There is a smash to right field. The right fielder coming fast. He dove for the ball and he got it, a beautiful catch.
- 2:05:10The right fielder, Mel Ock, just made a diving catch. Henrik smashed the right field. Listen to that hand.
- 2:05:20Maybe was that a honey? That was the fielding gem of the night, as Mel Ock raced in and made a diving catch of Tommy Henrik smashing the right field.
- 2:05:28And that really brought the crowd to its feet. That was a beautiful play to watch.
- 2:05:33He certainly robbed Tommy of a hit that time.
- 2:05:36Now here's the great Teddy Williams up. He's been up three times and he's had one hit, a single to right field, in the third inning.
- 2:05:42He's a left-handed batter. You remember the set-up last year in Detroit when he hit a home run off of Passau to win the All-Star game.
- 2:05:48Ball, it's low.
- 2:05:50Claude Passau, and I've talked to him many times since, about what type of pitch he threw to Williams that broke up that ball game.
- 2:05:56He said, Bob, all I know is I throw him a baseball and it broke up the game.
- 2:06:00Getting all set out there again. Here's the next one to Williams. Williams takes one, a change of pace pitch that's high and a little bit outside, and it's ball two.
- 2:06:08There's one out here in the first half of the eighth inning. Mel Ock just made a great diving catch of Henrik's drive to right field, and there's one gone.
- 2:06:15Over the arm for the American League, they lead three to nothing.
- 2:06:19Here comes the next pitch and it's a ball. It missed the outside corner, knee high, and it's three to nothing now for Williams.
- 2:06:26Artie Pletcher is coaching here at third to our left. Down to our right is Stanley Harris, who won two pennants for Washington some years ago.
- 2:06:34Gets set again. Here's the next pitch and Williams hits on the three-and-nothing count and hits a foul up on top of the stand.
- 2:06:41With a count three-and-nothing, Williams swung and hit a foul up on top of the stands.
- 2:06:46New ball is tossed down to third base to Bob Elliott, the Pittsburgh third baseman, who ruffs it up and then tosses it back to the mound.
- 2:06:55The National League has made no runs and four hits. The American League has made three runs and six hits, two of them home runs.
- 2:07:05Pass all set. Here's the next pitch and it's a strike right down the middle of Beauty that time, right across his knees.
- 2:07:14Ball three and strike two for Teddy Williams, one of the greatest hitters in the game.
- 2:07:18Big fellow, big tall, skinny boy, a free-swinger, and boy, he can really slam that baseball.
- 2:07:23Here comes the next pitch and there is a high fly ball to center field. Terry Moore is getting under the ball, moving in just a few feet.
- 2:07:29He's out and there's two gone. Williams flies to Terry Moore.
- 2:07:37Now here's the great Joe DiMaggio. Every time Joe comes up, he gets a chorus of boos and applause.
- 2:07:45But just as Jimmy Britt said before, a ballplayer is never a great ballplayer until he hears both boos and applause.
- 2:07:51No one can deny Joe DiMaggio's place in baseball as one of the greatest players in the game.
- 2:07:59Here's the first pitch to him and there is a spike. He caught the outside corner waist high.
- 2:08:03Teddy Williams smiled out at pass as he came back down the first baseline toward the American League dugout.
- 2:08:08DiMaggio has been up three times. He's had one hit. The last time up he drove a hit off of York's glove and it rolled into right field.
- 2:08:15The pitch is getting all set again. Here's the next pitch and there's a swing and there's a bouncing ball. It's a hit into left center field.
- 2:08:20The shortstop Reese went to his left to try to cut off that smash on the ground by DiMaggio, but he couldn't get it.
- 2:08:25It whizzed by him like a bullet and the Yankee clipper has two hits tonight.
- 2:08:32That makes a total of seven hits for the American League and it brings up the first baseman Rudy York.
- 2:08:39DiMaggio, by the way, is the only player in the game with two hits.
- 2:08:44Here's Rudy York, the big first baseman of the Tigers. Stepping into the batter's box, he's been up three times.
- 2:08:50He hit a home run into the right field stand the first time. The second time he was a strikeout victim.
- 2:08:55And the second time he was safe on an error by the second baseman Brown.
- 2:09:00He hit a ball down the third baseman that should have been a double play ball, but Brownie, taking the throw from third, dropped it and York was safe at first.
- 2:09:07Now he's up with a man on first base and two gone in the first half of the eighth.
- 2:09:11American League three, the National League nothing. Pass all getting set. Here it is.
- 2:09:15Hits a ball. It's high. Ball one.
- 2:09:18The outfielder is playing York deep. He can really give that baseball a ride.
- 2:09:22Harry Moore in center field, country slaughter in left field, and in right field it's Melop of the Giants.
- 2:09:32Slaughter is a regular right fielder, but he's playing left fielder here in the game tonight and he's one of the best outfielders in the game.
- 2:09:38Pass all getting his sign again. Here comes the next pitch to York. York swings. There's a high foul.
- 2:09:43It's off here to the right. The catcher flips off his mask. Lombardi coming back, but there's no play.
- 2:09:47It drops into the stands right beneath our mutual broadcasting booth and it is a harmless foul.
- 2:09:55Well remember the winner tonight plays the service team and a great attraction tomorrow night in the big municipal stadium at Cleveland.
- 2:10:02Tomorrow night, Wade Hoyt, Jack Rainey, and I will bring you the ball game from Cleveland as another exclusive mutual presentation.
- 2:10:11York swings that big bat around. He has a big black four on the back of his ray uniform for a big fellow. He kind of crowds that plate.
- 2:10:18There's a man on first. It's DiMaggio. There's a ball. It backs him right out of the box and it's ball two and strike one.
- 2:10:25Pass all the Cubs is the third pitcher for the National League tonight.
- 2:10:29Morton Cooper started, then Van Dammeer, and then pass all the American League runs were scored on Cooper.
- 2:10:35Two home runs and a double in the first inning. Here's the next pitch. York swings. There's a hopper down the third base line.
- 2:10:40It may be fair. It may be foul. It's fair. There's the throw and he's out in a very close play.
- 2:10:45Hoyt was at a close play. He picked that ball up just in front of the bag at about a half an inch fair.
- 2:10:50Fired that ball to first base and the runner was out by just a fraction of a step to retire the side.
- 2:10:56And so, fans, it is no runs and one hit. In the first half of the eighth inning, the American League is going out onto the field
- 2:11:03and the National League is coming up to try again to get back into this 10th annual All-Star game.
- 2:11:08They're trailing by three runs. There's Al Benton going out to the center of the diamond.
- 2:11:12Let's take a look around that American League team. Williams in left field. DiMaggio in center field.
- 2:11:16Henrik in right field. Keltner at third. Bedrow at short. Gordon at second. York at first.
- 2:11:22Tebbitz is catching and Benton is pitching and it looks like McCarthy is going all the way.
- 2:11:27With this American League team, Mickey Owen, who's done some great work for Brooklyn this year,
- 2:11:32is going to bat for Passau as we start the last half of the eighth.
- 2:11:35Well, it's been quite a ball game and believe me, these fans have seen a ball game here tonight.
- 2:11:50Mutual hopes that wherever you're listening to this game across the country, that it's giving you a lot of enjoyment.
- 2:11:56It's one of the outstanding sports attractions of the year, the annual baseball All-Star game.
- 2:12:03And this year it's for a great cause. All this money goes to Army-Navy relief after $100,000 is taken out for the Ball and Bat Fund
- 2:12:13to provide baseballs and bats and gloves for all the camps.
- 2:12:17Now here's Mickey Owen up. It's a right-handed batter. He's making his appearance in the lineup as a pinch hitter for Passau.
- 2:12:23Benton gets set. There's a bunt down the third baseline. It's foul outside the line.
- 2:12:27Kenny Keltner runs in for the ball, picks it up and the boys whip it around.
- 2:12:31Mickey Owen is a right-handed batter. He's at present average is 291 for Brooklyn.
- 2:12:38He's had no home runs and he has batted in 22 runs. He's had this year one of his greatest years.
- 2:12:45Here's a fellow who was the unfortunate victim of a play in the World Series last year, which Mutual brought to you exclusively.
- 2:12:53And that play of the missed third strike will probably go down his history.
- 2:12:58But did it affect this fellow's career? It did not. It made him a better ball player.
- 2:13:03Ball, it's inside. All the more tribute to Mickey Owen.
- 2:13:08There's nobody on and nobody out as the National League tries to get a rally going here in the last half of the eighth and their chances are slipping away.
- 2:13:14Here comes the next pitch and there's a ball. It's high outside and it's ball two and strike one.
- 2:13:20National League has changed their entire team tonight. Manager Joe McCarthy of the American League with a three to nothing league has just stood back.
- 2:13:27Hal Benton is all set again. Here's the next one to Owen. Owen swings. There's a high fly ball going toward right field.
- 2:13:31It may be a home run. It is a home run for Mickey Owen.
- 2:13:36There's a home run for Mickey Owen into the right field stands.
- 2:13:59Yes, sir. This National League team is still battling here in New York in this all star game.
- 2:14:04It's three to one now in favor of the American League. Mickey Owen just batted for pass off and as a good pinch hitter should he not only came through with a hit, he hit one for the circuit.
- 2:14:15Now here's the leadoff man Billy Herman a right handed hitter. There's a ball. It's wide.
- 2:14:20Billy Herman's average for the year is two hundred and forty eight. He's hit one homer and he's driven in twenty nine runs.
- 2:14:27The American League is warming up two pitchers. There's the first walk tonight. The pitcher Al Benton didn't like that call and he's very red faced out there as he hollers at the umpire Bill McGough.
- 2:14:37Billy Herman waits for the next pitch. Watch it. Here it is. There's a swing and a foul. It's out of play. It's up in the stands off there to the right and it's a foul strike.
- 2:14:45So we have a count of one and one on Billy Herman with one run in nobody on nobody out.
- 2:14:50Last half of the eighth inning at New York the American League three and the National League one and this is some ballgame.
- 2:14:57How he rocks his arms back and forth. He's getting set again. Here it is. There's a ball that missed the corner by an inch and not anymore either.
- 2:15:06They're really waiting Benton out now it's ball two and strike one for Billy Herman.
- 2:15:12He went in at second base in place of Jimmy Brown. Here comes the next pitch and Herman hits a little hopper to the pitcher's right.
- 2:15:18He's up with the ball. There goes the peg. He's out. Pitcher the first and there's one go.
- 2:15:26So that brings up the third baseman Bob Elliott of Pittsburgh.
- 2:15:31Here's Bob Elliott coming up for his first time in the ballgame tonight. His average for the year is two hundred eighty six.
- 2:15:36He slammed out eight home runs and he's driven in fifty three runs.
- 2:15:41The last half of the eighth at New York this ballgame will end at nine thirty even if it isn't over because of a practice blackout here in New York tonight.
- 2:15:52In other words at nine thirty regardless of what the score is or what the conditions are the game and all wonder Elliott.
- 2:16:01Here's the next pitch. There's a spike. It's right across his knees. It's called very sharp curveball.
- 2:16:07One out a run in for the National League it's three to one in favor of the American Bob Elliott of Pittsburgh a right handed hitter is up in there.
- 2:16:16Benton gets his sign. Here's the next pitch and there's a line drive. It's a hit to right field.
- 2:16:20The first baseman York leaps up but couldn't get it and it puts Elliott on first base a sharp hit to right field for Elliott.
- 2:16:28That's six hits for the National League.
- 2:16:32And it brings up the center fielder Terry Moore one of the greatest outfielders in baseball.
- 2:16:38Terry Moore of the St. Louis Cardinals batting to seventy one.
- 2:16:42He's hit two home runs and he has 17 runs batted in.
- 2:16:46But when it comes to ball hawks and when it comes to feeling his position this fellow doesn't have to take a backseat for anybody.
- 2:16:55And on first Terry Moore batting here's the pitch. There's a spike. It's called it's right across his way.
- 2:17:00One out a man on for the National League. They're trailing three to one here in the last half of the eighth and they're running up against the time deadline.
- 2:17:09It's already again here's the next pitch. There's a swing and a miss as Terry Moore took a vicious cut at a knee high curve ball and it's two strikes on Moore.
- 2:17:18Moore steps out of the batter's box knocks the dirt off his feet with his bat.
- 2:17:22He's up in there again a red eight in the back of his white uniform. Here he is right below our mutual booth.
- 2:17:26We could almost drop our pencil on him. We're so close to the field of play. Al Benton a big towering right hander out there on the mound is getting set again.
- 2:17:33Here it is. And there is a ball that's over his head and just a fraction behind him. And it's ball one and strike two for Terry Moore.
- 2:17:42Next man to come up will be the first baseman Frank McCormick.
- 2:17:48American Leaguers talk it up out there in the infield. The outfield is playing straight away. Here is a foul. He didn't mean to hit it.
- 2:17:55He was backing away from an inside curve ball. The ball hit his bat and as he backed away the ball went off to the right.
- 2:18:01He went out to the left and it's a foul.
- 2:18:06It's all one and strike two on Terry Moore with a man on first base for the National League and one gone.
- 2:18:11They've scored a run this inning on Owens Homer.
- 2:18:15Big Al Benton is the second pitcher for the American League. Chandler started.
- 2:18:20Here's the next pitch and there is a ball. It's just a little bit too close and it's two and two.
- 2:18:28Ball two strike two for Terry Moore.
- 2:18:32How's that plate waves that light colored bat around. Man on first base Elliott has a short lead off.
- 2:18:37Here comes the pitch and there is a swing and a foul. It's out of play.
- 2:18:40It's up into the stands off there to the right and it's two and two.
- 2:18:44The rabbits get to new baseball from umpire Bill McGowan steps out and fires it out to the pitcher.
- 2:18:51The exclusive mutual broadcast of the All-Star Game from Cleveland will start at 8 45 Eastern wartime.
- 2:18:57Remember that fans tune in to your mutual station at 8 45 Eastern wartime.
- 2:19:03Here comes the next pitch and Moore hits a high infield fly.
- 2:19:07It's between the plate and first base and the first baseman York is under it and has it for the second out.
- 2:19:12So there's two golf.
- 2:19:16Well here's Frank McCormick coming up.
- 2:19:19He's no newcomer to All-Star play or World Series play either.
- 2:19:23Frank McCormick a Cincinnati right handed hitter. He's batting to 49.
- 2:19:27He's hit 10 home runs and he has 50 runs batted in up there now with two out of the man on first in the last half of the eighth.
- 2:19:39The score is three to one in favor of the American League. They scored all their runs in the first inning.
- 2:19:44Here's the first pitch and there's a swing and a foul.
- 2:19:47It's a slow curve ball just above his waist.
- 2:19:50He just got a piece of that ball and rolled it foul to the left of the plate.
- 2:19:56That by the way is the first pinch home run in 10 All-Star games.
- 2:20:00Mickey Owens pinch Homer first pinch home run in 10 All-Star games.
- 2:20:05Here's the ground ball to short. Bedro gets it to play it second. Force out and it retires the side.
- 2:20:10The play went from Lou Bedro the shortstop to the second baseman Joe Gordon.
- 2:20:14It was an easy force play and it retires the side.
- 2:20:17And so the total spans in the last half of the eighth for the National League one run and two hits.
- 2:20:22And now the game is going into the first half of the ninth inning with the score of the American League three and the National League one.
- 2:20:28Now let's recount those totals shall we for eight innings of play.

- 2:24:22The third baseman Elliott is coming over near the mound.
- 2:24:25He's right under the ball.

- 2:24:28And so the National League will get their time at bat.
- 2:24:31No runs and no hits.
- 2:24:33This can be said for the American League.
- 2:24:35And let me say it right now.
- 2:24:36The boys are not stalling at all.
- 2:24:38Everybody's hurrying right out there.
- 2:24:40And I really think that the American League wants to see the National League get their last time at bat, which they're entitled to.
- 2:24:45They're all hustling, getting out there on the field so that the National League running up against the time deadline will get their bats in the last half of the night.

- 2:25:19The team led by my old friend Mickey Cochran, the former manager of the Detroit Tigers, will play the winner tonight in the big stadium at Cleveland.
- 2:25:26I broadcast the All-Star game there a number of years ago and it's a beautiful layout.
- 2:25:30That was the year that Fox hit a long home run over the left fielder's head.
- 2:25:33I'll never forget it.
- 2:25:34And it was a great ballgame.
- 2:25:35So fans, you fans in Cleveland, of course, will be out there for a great cause tomorrow night.
- 2:25:39All that money goes to Army Navy relief.

- 2:26:06Tebich chasing the ball, maybe out of play.
- 2:26:08It's in the stands and it is out of play.
- 2:26:10It's a harmless foul.
- 2:26:15One strike.
- 2:26:17Left hand hitter Melat up.
- 2:26:18It's the last half of the ninth inning with the American League ahead three to one.
- 2:26:22The American League official totals are three runs and seven hits.
- 2:26:30If the American League wins, of course, Chandler will be the winning pitcher and Cooper will be the loser.
- 2:26:38It gets all set out there now taking his time.
- 2:26:40There's nobody on.
- 2:26:41There's nobody out.
- 2:26:42Benton is ready.
- 2:26:43Here's the next pitch to what?
- 2:26:44Ott takes a ball.
- 2:26:45It missed the corner and it's one and one.
- 2:26:48Boy, what a moment this is, fans.
- 2:26:50I know that you can feel the tenseness that we feel here in New York.
- 2:26:53As the National League up for the last time with seven minutes left to play the deadline before the blackout in New York,
- 2:26:58Mayor LaGuardia was very kind to set aside the time to give baseball more time tonight.
- 2:27:03You know, this game was supposed to end at nine ten, but there was an unavoidable delay in starting.
- 2:27:07And so Mayor LaGuardia very graciously gave baseball a little longer time right up until the actual deadline of the blackout, which is nine thirty.
- 2:27:15It's getting all set again.
- 2:27:16Here's the pitch.
- 2:27:17There's a swing and there's a foul that the first baseman may have a chance on.
- 2:27:21He's going back and it's going into the stands, a foul ball, and it's two and two on little male Alberti Tebbitz gets a new baseball from Bill McGowan.
- 2:27:32What else is that ball out there? Well, the American League, as you know, scored their three runs in the first inning on a home run, a double and another home run.
- 2:27:40And the National League scored their run in the eighth inning on a pinch home run by Mickey Owen.
- 2:27:44Now he's getting all set again. It's two and two on up. Here it comes.
- 2:27:47It's a swing and a foul tip and it got away from Tebbitz and he's going to get another swing.
- 2:27:52Looks like Bertie was hurt with that foul.
- 2:27:55Tebbitz went down on one knee, but he's getting up now and seems to be OK.
- 2:28:01Well, it's been a wonderful sight here in New York tonight.
- 2:28:06These fans that have jammed into these stands have really enjoyed it.
- 2:28:10And Jim and Mel and I have really seen a grand ball game. We hope that you've enjoyed it on the radio.
- 2:28:14Here comes the next pitch and out hits a pop-up right in front of the plate.
- 2:28:18The catcher Tebbitz is down the line just a few feet and takes that ball 20 feet down the line toward third and one foot inside the line, a fair ball, and out is out.
- 2:28:28So fans, two more now and the ball game will be over.
- 2:28:36Now the next man to come up, a left-handed hitter, is Eno Slaughter of the St. Louis Cardinals, a great ball player.
- 2:28:41This fellow can run, he can field, he can hit, and he loves to play ball.
- 2:28:45There's five minutes left here in New York.
- 2:28:47Getting all set now, there's the wind up and here comes the next pitch and there's a swing and a foul, one strike.
- 2:28:58The American League three and the National League one.
- 2:29:02That's the setup.
- 2:29:04Nobody on and one gone in the last half of the ninth.
- 2:29:07Here comes the pitch and there is a foul. It's right up here to the right, just to the right of our booth.
- 2:29:12Catcher Tebbitz gets another new ball and fires it right out there to Benton.
- 2:29:18Country Slaughter batting for the National League with nobody on and one gone.
- 2:29:23Benton is all set, here comes the next pitch and Slaughter takes one in the dirt, a ball.
- 2:29:27Ball one and strike two for Eno.
- 2:29:32Up in there batting left-handed, a red nine in the back of his white uniform.
- 2:29:37American League infielders keep up a constant stream of chatter.
- 2:29:40Here comes the pitch and there is another ball. He almost hit him in the leg.
- 2:29:43He was going to go for that one. It was a sinker and he started to go for it, but he pulled his bat in time and the umpire calls it a ball.
- 2:29:49The outfield of Williams, DiMaggio and Henrik that's gone all the way is playing Slaughter straight away.
- 2:29:55About four minutes left. They'll get their bats all right.
- 2:29:59Getting all set again, here comes the next pitch and there is a swing and a hopper foul to the right of the play.
- 2:30:04Slaughter starts down the first baseline for the umpire Bill McGowan yells foul.
- 2:30:08He tells Birdie Tebbs to throw that ball away, flips him a new ball and the American Leaguers peg it around.
- 2:30:13The next man to come up after Slaughter will be Ernie Lombardi.
- 2:30:18Bill McGowan is getting a new supply of baseballs now in his blue-sir'd suit.
- 2:30:26Al Benton is the second American League pitcher tonight. Chandler started.
- 2:30:31Getting all set again, here comes the next one to Slaughter. Slaughter swings, there's a long fly ball to dead center, but DiMaggio's out there backing up.
- 2:30:37He caught it and there's two gone. Country Slaughter hit one a mile that time towards center field.
- 2:30:42But Joe DiMaggio raced back about 35 or 40 feet and pulled it down and there's two gone.
- 2:30:47And now friends, here comes Ernie Lombardi, the last hope of the National League.
- 2:31:00Here's Ernie Lombardi, here's the first pitch, there's a strike, it's over the outside corner.
- 2:31:10Two out and nobody on in the last half of the ninth inning, American League 3-1.
- 2:31:14Here comes the next pitch to Lomb. Lomb swings and misses a change of pace pitch in around his knees and the pitcher made him look bad on it.
- 2:31:20It's two strikes on Lombardi, there's two out, one more out and the ball game is over and the American League will play the service team in Cleveland tomorrow night.
- 2:31:28Now Al Benton is all set again, here comes the next pitch. He hit the high fly ball to right field, looks like it's all over.
- 2:31:34Tommy Hendrick is in under the ball and he caught it. The game is over and the American League defeats the National League in New York in the tenth annual All-Star game.
- 2:31:42Here are the totals. The American League three runs, seven hits and no errors. The National League one run, six hits and one error.
- 2:31:50The winning pitcher in the ball game is Chandler and the losing pitcher is Martin Cooper.
- 2:31:55I want to give my colleagues who worked on the broadcast with me tonight just a chance to say goodbye. We're going to have to get off in a hurry and here's Mel Allen.
- 2:32:02It was swell working this game with Bob Elson and Jimmy Britt. It was a beautiful ball game to watch.
- 2:32:07A lot of swell pitching, only one half inning which was any great deal of offensive fireworks in the first inning when Lou Budrow homered and Rudy York homered with Tommy Hendrick on base who had doubled prior to York's homer.
- 2:32:18It was really a swell ball game to watch. Wish you were all here. All right, here's Jimmy Britt.
- 2:32:23The fact that this game had a blackout deadline to make added to the suspense and drama of the final innings.
- 2:32:28It was an All-Star game worth remembering and the American League is going to give Uncle Sam Service 9 in Cleveland tomorrow night a real battle.
- 2:32:36Well thank you very much Jim and Mel. It's been a real pleasure to work with you tonight.
- 2:32:40I'm looking forward to tomorrow night with working with Wade Hoyt and Jack Rennie over at Cleveland when MUTU will bring you an exclusive coverage again of the great All-Star game at Cleveland, the big municipal stadium.
- 2:32:49The players are getting off the field, the American League players are shaking hands with each other and so are the National League players as they go off the field.
- 2:32:55And the final score again is the American League 3, the National League 1, the winning pitcher is Chandler and the losing pitcher is Cooper.
