Transcript
- 0:15Welcome to sometimes their side. I a podcast about two friends,
- 0:20having real and unfiltered conversations about dogs and
- 0:23people. Listen, as we talk about our
- 0:25lives with dogs, training Behavior, share some laughs and
- 0:29a lot of Banter, my name is Heather.
- 0:32My name is Christy. And today we are talking about
- 0:36the topic of I want to get a puppy to raise them right in
- 0:42conjunction. With, it's all in how you raise
- 0:45them. And before we get started, just
- 0:47a reminder to subscribe rate US and share us.
- 0:50So, if you are somebody who forgets to do that at the end
- 0:53like me, you can pause your podcast right now and do that
- 0:56and then get right back in with us and enjoy this topic.
- 1:00And we are so excited to talk about this.
- 1:03One of the reasons that I suggested the topic of I want to
- 1:07get a puppy to raise them, right?
- 1:09And that so easily goes into, it's all in how your reason is
- 1:12because since the pandemic I have been approached by so many
- 1:16people asking for good rescues or good breeders because they
- 1:20want to get a puppy. They wanted to get a dog but
- 1:23they wanted to make sure it was a puppy and they kept telling me
- 1:25because I want to make sure it's raised, right.
- 1:27Which made me kind of start wondering like what What do you
- 1:30mean raised, right. There's nothing wrong with
- 1:32wanting to get a puppy to raise it, right?
- 1:34But they're Christie and then you hate because you hate
- 1:36puppies. Oh yeah, I don't hate puppies.
- 1:39I just don't want one in my home full-time.
- 1:43Please don't give me a puppy as a gift.
- 1:46It will not enjoy that. I showed up at your door and I
- 1:50was like, merry Christmas, happy birthday and Happy Valentine's
- 1:53Day. Christy, I bought a puppy.
- 1:55I would not open the door, buddy.
- 2:00Live here longer my friend. Goodbye.
- 2:03Look what you got yourself. You like that, dog.
- 2:07So it did start me questioning like what do people mean when
- 2:10they say raise them, right? And then asking people the
- 2:13question of how familiar are you with dog behavior in general?
- 2:18And then, you know what, really qualifies an individual to raise
- 2:22a puppy, right? Because as Heather, and I had
- 2:24gone through this other, obviously started with more
- 2:27knowledge, given her background. But as I have learned over the
- 2:31years about puppies and puppy culture and all these things.
- 2:35I kind of personally became overwhelmed with how much there
- 2:39is to raising a puppy. Right there is a lot and write
- 2:42in quotation marks, but, yes, there's so much to it,
- 2:46introducing them to people of different sizes and color, and
- 2:52people with hats, and people without jobs, and people with
- 2:55disabilities who hunched over our wheelchairs.
- 2:58Yes different. Wars and noisy environments.
- 3:02Different noise kids. So there's just a lot to expose
- 3:05a puppy to when thinking about what could my future hold with
- 3:09this dog. Yeah and what do I want to make
- 3:11sure that they have a solid foundation on and that kind of
- 3:14got me thinking I don't think people realize how much there is
- 3:19to it. I think a lot of times when
- 3:21people say I want to get a puppy so I raised them right.
- 3:23What they mean is, I want a puppy who hasn't been abused and
- 3:27you want to raise them with a whole lot of love Within They're
- 3:30faced with a lot of them so that they can be exposed to their
- 3:33family. But in reality like just your
- 3:36family unit isn't really socializing them, that's just
- 3:39their family unit. Yeah.
- 3:40I think a lot of people want to raise their puppies.
- 3:43Right? I don't think for sure, get
- 3:44puppy the normal person. There's bad players and every
- 3:48and everything, but the normal person does not get a puppy and
- 3:51say, like, oh, I really hope I've raised this puppy wrong.
- 4:00Have a crappy family member. Yeah.
- 4:02So I think that kind of let me ask.
- 4:04Let us name this road was watching me with Thiago sort of
- 4:10your first experience with somebody who's really passionate
- 4:14about trying to in quotation marks, do it the right way.
- 4:18Hmm, I don't know. Probably for somebody who's like
- 4:22more passionate about. It does a lot of research, blah,
- 4:24blah blah, and then sets out to sort of do it with the intent.
- 4:29Yeah. Yeah, I think possibly you were
- 4:31you were probably the more organized person I heard and I
- 4:34was doing it because Heather hasn't had list.
- 4:37Yeah. Because I think I've met other
- 4:39passionate people who were socializing and doing everything
- 4:43that they knew to do with the research that was out there at
- 4:46the time. Yeah.
- 4:47But rather was like checking things off.
- 4:49Like these are the things that are important and I want to make
- 4:53sure that they happen in specific week.
- 4:56So they'll God's life and and then continue on from there.
- 4:59It's so I Don't think I had ever experienced that.
- 5:02Yeah malady. Yeah before yeah.
- 5:05Because I pretty much when I have a puppy.
- 5:07It's like man life goes on hold for those first like eight weeks
- 5:11or so that the puppies home. Because I just I want to be able
- 5:15to do everything I can during that imprinting period.
- 5:18And even beyond that, try my best to make things stuck that
- 5:22deck in my favor. So yeah, I was just curious if
- 5:25you've kind of experience that with other with other people and
- 5:29I think like, Even having Lizzie the puppy that we did have.
- 5:33Like, yeah, we were told socialize her, so I was pretty
- 5:37on it with like socialization. Like, yeah, taking her to
- 5:40PetSmart. I mean, we did the best we could
- 5:43with the information, but I was very active in.
- 5:46Like I wanted to enroll her in puppy school.
- 5:48I wanted to socialize her with as many people as I could, and
- 5:52she was really people social, because that was a big concern
- 5:55being part Shar-Pei. Yeah, a lot of times they only
- 6:00Love their family and they're very cautious of strangers.
- 6:03And we knew we were a very social family.
- 6:05Yeah, we had a lot of people coming over.
- 6:07My parents were like, the college group posts at our
- 6:10church. So, you know, we had lots of
- 6:12people coming in all the time and so, we knew we needed a
- 6:15Social puppy. Yeah, well, I mean, I'm lucky
- 6:18enough once again to have all these great people that helped
- 6:21me along the way and taught me. But even having said that, the
- 6:25way that I socialize Thiago in 2017, Is not the way that I will
- 6:31hopefully socialize my puppy. Maybe that might be coming this
- 6:35year. Some of it is the same.
- 6:37I will still choose to introduce my new puppy to appropriate
- 6:42adult dogs outside of his or her home.
- 6:45The dogs that were so into with Thiago learning from are now
- 6:51seniors. And so I need to, like, come up
- 6:54with a whole new list of adult dogs because I would not ask
- 6:59Lucy. Would not enjoy that because
- 7:01we're not just going to adult dogs and being like, hey, we
- 7:04don't care if you like it or not.
- 7:06Let's just go have at it. We want adult dogs who are also
- 7:09very fair and are going to enjoy the time to.
- 7:13That's a whole nother piece of it.
- 7:15And then we already talked about how I sort of over socialize
- 7:19Thiago to people won't be doing that this time around still all
- 7:23the exposure. Till the people, the places, the
- 7:25children, the environments, all that stuff, but more in a
- 7:29passive. Of socialization type of way
- 7:31because we know better, we do better.
- 7:33It is interesting to think about from the average family who's
- 7:37getting a pet. We don't mean that in an okwe,
- 7:40this was us when we were growing up, we're getting a pet, you're
- 7:43not seeking out actively majority of the most recent
- 7:48articles on training and you're not tapped into that world.
- 7:53So it's really difficult to get the good information if you're
- 7:58trying to look up. How to train a dog, you're going
- 8:01to get 572 opinions and you're going to be sitting there as a
- 8:05person. Just going, what the fuck is the
- 8:07right thing to listen to? So that's really hard to, I
- 8:10think it makes it man. It makes it almost impossible to
- 8:15know what the heck to listen to. And I think that, that probably
- 8:20goes into why I created my business, which is socializing,
- 8:25and training, and working with puppies, for people.
- 8:28When I said, Shout to create puppy, kale day.
- 8:31It was really because I'm super passionate about all this stuff.
- 8:35And I want everyone to be able to have the opportunity to have
- 8:42their puppy, brought up with the most support possible.
- 8:46I also want people to enjoy their puppies.
- 8:48So if you are overwhelmed and like, don't know what to do,
- 8:52don't know what article to listen to need to work a
- 8:55full-time job and have three kids and you're trying to bring
- 8:57up a puppy. Holy cow.
- 8:59That's Lat. Yeah.
- 9:02So they want to do the right thing.
- 9:05All of my clients know that they don't have all the tools they
- 9:09need. And that it's not like they're
- 9:11like me where they're super passionate about doing all the
- 9:15research to figure it out. They have a full life, you know,
- 9:18my life is dogs. So to me, it's like, well, I've
- 9:22already done the research. I've already looked at
- 9:24everything. I know how I would raise a
- 9:26puppy, and if you align with the way that I would raise a puppy,
- 9:30bring it on, you know, let me help you with that.
- 9:34So far, all of my clients have been so, so thankful because
- 9:38they still get to enjoy their puppy.
- 9:40The topic is kind of coming from a good place.
- 9:43I want to raise them, right? Because we're adding this family
- 9:46member but there are definitely other ways to think about it, I
- 9:50guess. Yeah.
- 9:51And I think it goes saying I want to raise them, right?
- 9:54Comes from the saying, it's all in how you raise them.
- 9:58It kind of is a An offshoot of that.
- 10:01Yes, that train of thought that you have to raise them yourself.
- 10:06Yeah. Or you have to know how they
- 10:08were raised for them to be in okay dog.
- 10:10Yeah they have to have a really great intro to life to be a good
- 10:16dog later in life. Yeah.
- 10:17Which we always want to set a dog up for Success.
- 10:20We want to Stack the deck in their favor, but there are so
- 10:24many examples of really great dogs who had a really bad start
- 10:29to Life. Yeah, and there's great examples
- 10:32of dogs who struggled later in life, who had a really great
- 10:37upbringing so that we know that they're the start to life was
- 10:42very Kush and very, I mean, I was three of them.
- 10:47Yeah, yeah. So let's talk about your dogs.
- 10:50Of course, as you all know, I had a pit bull named Lucy and we
- 10:56adopted her when she was 14 weeks old in 75 and we were of
- 11:02the mindset that we were going to raise this puppy, right?
- 11:05And we were going to bring her into our home with our two other
- 11:09dogs, and because we were starting with her as a puppy
- 11:14that everyone was going to get along perfectly.
- 11:18It sounds so stupid. Now not stupid, just like silly,
- 11:21nobody stupid for thinking that it's just feel silly to me at
- 11:25this point. It's so mature, a cultural
- 11:27thing. Yes.
- 11:28Yes, that you do. My into it that was a very
- 11:31enthusiastic. Yes.
- 11:32Yeah, we adopted her and as, you know, from the our dogs episode
- 11:38things didn't go as planned. And I spent a lot of time
- 11:42socializing Lucy. She actually went to the daycare
- 11:46that I worked at and was active in at the time.
- 11:50She started training as soon as she got her vaccinations and we
- 11:55were working towards her becoming my agility dog.
- 11:59So I was very Very passionate about her being out in the world
- 12:02and the way I did things back in mid 2000's was, you know, the
- 12:07best that I could do considering the circumstances and the
- 12:11knowledge that we had at the time I feel like I did a really
- 12:14good job in quote raising her, right and by the time she was,
- 12:21you know, 16 months old. We started having problems
- 12:23within our home and while there were dogs that Lucy was Social
- 12:30with as a young dog even after we started having problems in
- 12:33our home, ultimately she became an only dog in our Singleton and
- 12:38we never ended up introducing her to anyone else.
- 12:41Once we got to a certain point in her age because it was the
- 12:44right thing for her. There's an example of a dog that
- 12:48we quote raised, right? And shit went wrong, a huge
- 12:52piece of that is just that was her genetics and that's who she
- 12:56was and I could not combat. Those genetics, no matter what I
- 13:01did. The flip side of that would be
- 13:04Daisy on. Remy, you know, Remi came into
- 13:07our home about four years old. When we adopted her, she walked
- 13:13into our house, similar to Daisy.
- 13:15And just said, okay, this is where I am cool.
- 13:17I'm acclimated and I'm good to go with Remy situation.
- 13:21She came into the local in take shelter.
- 13:25She was almost completely bald. She had really, really bad.
- 13:29Allergies environmental and food, and she was in a pretty
- 13:33bad way. Medically as a young dog, she
- 13:37spent two years in Foster, in rescue waiting for her home.
- 13:42She ended up being completely dark social, and people social,
- 13:47and she actually was tested and passed to be a therapy dog.
- 13:52But the day that she was supposed to have her first visit
- 13:54was when her back stuff started. So she had gone through the
- 13:58process to be a I registered therapy, dog, as well as Daisy.
- 14:02So it is assumed that Remy didn't have, maybe that I don't
- 14:07want to say, like Grammy was an abuse case or anything like
- 14:10that, but I think that whoever had her didn't have great
- 14:12resources. I don't think that they were
- 14:16probably doing everything that I was doing with my loser engine.
- 14:20Puppy culture member to like doing neuro stem at when she was
- 14:25three weeks old, and they weren't doing socialization
- 14:29trip. Oops, two different Home Depot
- 14:31Lowe's, and Etc. They weren't putting her through
- 14:34training classes and all that stuff.
- 14:37And similarly, with Daisy, she was found as a stray when she
- 14:41was about four I believe and she went in to rescue.
- 14:46She was as we know a medical nightmare, she had to have some
- 14:52pretty extensive knee reconstruction surgeries on both
- 14:56knees when she came in. And so she spent A lot of time
- 15:01getting recuperated from the medical side and then her
- 15:05initial Foster is fantastic, but he was a young guy at the time
- 15:09living in a house with other Bachelors.
- 15:12I don't think he was doing all that well, and she was already
- 15:14four, but I don't think you should do.
- 15:17Y'all think that I was doing with my young dogs, but he did a
- 15:21great job of getting her fixed up medically, she then bounced
- 15:26around to an adoptive home for a year.
- 15:29Year, which was a good situation for her, but then they couldn't
- 15:33keep her. And then she bounced back and
- 15:36then, she bounced to our house. I mean, this dog bounced all
- 15:39around. Probably her whole life.
- 15:41She just cruised into our house at like, 8 years old.
- 15:44And was like, hey guys, I'm here.
- 15:45I'm amazing live with the magic and love it and we did.
- 15:49And she, she was magical. He was, and I didn't do people
- 15:55say to me. Oh, my gosh, Daisy!
- 15:56She was an amazing therapy, dog. Did you train her to do that?
- 16:00Hell. No.
- 16:01That was Daisy. That was just pure susheela's.
- 16:04Yeah, that's an example of the flip side.
- 16:07The reason that we bring up both sides is because I am a person
- 16:12who's passionate about quote, raising my puppy, right?
- 16:15And look how wrong it can go because we have no control over
- 16:20genetic factors. What do I say?
- 16:22Christie. Genetics are a tricky.
- 16:25Mistress her. Yeah and I think that we We
- 16:29should talk about troops story because he's another great
- 16:32example of where things can start wrong and go completely
- 16:36right. I want to call him shoot like
- 16:38Shoop ba-doop ba-doop ba-doop anyway to I know but like I just
- 16:44hear Salt-N-Pepa every single time.
- 16:46You say his name. So chup belongs to my friend who
- 16:50lives in Minnesota, and he came from a hoarding case.
- 16:54He came from a home with 150 dogs.
- 16:58Crazy is Sing like, I can imagine living with 150 bucks
- 17:03but he did, he wasn't like a breeding facility.
- 17:06It was just a hoarding case. A lot of those dogs have to be
- 17:09dispersed Out Among multiple States because no one rescue
- 17:13could would think so a pup for all of them.
- 17:16So when qu came in a he is missing an eye and they believe
- 17:19from trauma, obviously, we don't know his backstory, but they
- 17:23think it was probably some sort of dog to dog trauma on his eye.
- 17:26When he first came in his foster mom.
- 17:29Mom said that he was so scared. She would just sit in the room
- 17:33with him, with his crate door open, and he would stay in the
- 17:36crate because he was just too scared to come out.
- 17:39And so she'd only like leash him to take him outside to go to the
- 17:43bathroom, but left, everything else up to him on his terms so
- 17:47that he could get comfortable on whatever to Foster, what an
- 17:51amazing faster. Yeah, my friends started seeing
- 17:54pictures of him and immediately fell in love and said we don't
- 17:57want just to A dog, we want to adopt this specific dog and
- 18:03governorís mobile, both on board with it.
- 18:05And so when they met chup, I remember correctly, he had under
- 18:09like a Barstool the entire time he didn't want to come to them.
- 18:14He was not like these are my people or anything like that,
- 18:18and they were so undeterred when they adopted him, he still had
- 18:21some some coming out of his shell to do.
- 18:24Obviously, he was learning to trust of this point.
- 18:27This dog is like, Like the Walmart greeter of dogs.
- 18:31Like, oh my God, that was everything.
- 18:33And everyone is his friend, all people, all dogs.
- 18:37He gets along with big dogs and small dogs, so he's kind of
- 18:40social to oh yeah, he lives with two cats.
- 18:43So that was a concern of mine when she first got him.
- 18:47I said he looks like a cattle, dog.
- 18:49Are we sure that he's going to be cat social because I don't
- 18:52want something to happen to your cat's.
- 18:54He's like 20 pounds and I am not a small dog person in that I
- 18:58love All dogs. I don't want to own a small dog
- 19:02personally I don't want it living in my home perm.
- 19:05I can't wait until you're like 75 years old and have a small
- 19:08dog and I can replay this agreement, be small but but like
- 19:14I do definitely threatened to steal chup because he is so
- 19:19amazing. He looks very big and pictures.
- 19:22He looks like a 40p guys. Hi I'm but was like shocked when
- 19:25you told me his actual size because I look at pictures of
- 19:28him and I'm like 35, 40 pounds. And then if you compare the
- 19:31pictures with the cats, he's barely larger than I don't think
- 19:35I've seen a picture like that, but that's so funny because then
- 19:38you see it in perspective, know, I still believe he's big.
- 19:41Like I said, I don't think of him as a big probably why you
- 19:44like him because in your mind you're like he's like a 35-pound
- 19:47dog. Not a little told ya.
- 19:50He is and he's got the personality of your big dog.
- 19:53Yeah, he's not trying to prove anything.
- 19:55He's just a big dial. He's like, hey guys, I'm here
- 19:58friend. Welcome to the party.
- 20:00He is so great. And now he goes to the old folks
- 20:03home and he is that that might not be the right term to call it
- 20:07anymore. B0, retirement, Retirement
- 20:12Facility old book so that is not getting edit it out.
- 20:17Sorry that was offensive. Daddy.
- 20:20Yes, the retirement facility but he goes there and he volunteers
- 20:25and they just love him and also my friend does Big Brothers, Big
- 20:28Sisters and she As a little brother right now.
- 20:30And and so her little comes over, and he does great with
- 20:34with her little brother. He's good with kids, he's good
- 20:37with adults, he's good with dogs, he's good with cats.
- 20:40It's like everyone on Earth as his friend life, man.
- 20:45Yeah, he did a great job. Supporting him in the beginning.
- 20:49What he needed to sort of come out.
- 20:51Absolutely, definitely a case, he was not getting what he
- 20:55needed in the beginning and still ended up being an amazing.
- 21:00I also don't want everyone to think.
- 21:02Oh, if you just love them enough, it's right.
- 21:05You know, because we the same friend and I have a mutual
- 21:09friend, who didn't adopt an adult, dog, from a breeding
- 21:12facility and she, she still is pretty Farrell.
- 21:16Yeah. After three years of care and
- 21:19love and and doing a multiple trainers and behaviorist.
- 21:25Yeah. Involved and LEDs all of it and
- 21:28I think they've come to accept that.
- 21:29That's who she is. Yeah, they're letting her look,
- 21:31her best life in that condition and those term.
- 21:35No. Yeah.
- 21:35Feral hog, who, who lives with two people who she will taller.
- 21:39And they do a really good job of like respecting her boundaries
- 21:43so that she can live the best life possible.
- 21:45Considering the circumstances and really because they do such
- 21:49a good job. Good job.
- 21:51She's living her best life as Lena.
- 21:53The dog. She is.
- 21:55Yeah, absolutely. I want to share one more story
- 21:58because we Haven't talked about a puppy or a dog situation where
- 22:03the person goes to an ethical responsible breeder, and they
- 22:09have done everything to stack, the deck in their favor and crap
- 22:12goes wrong. So I want to kind of make sure
- 22:15that we touch on examples of all sides.
- 22:18Everyone knows that my world is Rottweilers and that's where I
- 22:22came from. I have a friend who quite
- 22:25literally did everything possible to stack the deck in.
- 22:29In their favor when they were getting a new puppy and they
- 22:33went to someone who they knew the lines really well, they had
- 22:37had dogs from them before or related to them before they were
- 22:42sticking to a breed. You know, they had been in
- 22:44Rottweilers for decades at this point extremely experienced
- 22:48owners. They got a puppy and that
- 22:52breeder did all the things that we would want, you know, when
- 22:55raising the litter and making everything happen.
- 22:59Family, and I actually met the dog.
- 23:02Did you know that I actually met him?
- 23:04Uh-huh. Yeah.
- 23:05So I actually did meet him when he was an adolescent.
- 23:09I think it was probably around a year old so not sexually mature,
- 23:12not socially mature at that point before the age of two,
- 23:16unfortunately some things transpired.
- 23:19And this dog was not well, he had some serious behavior
- 23:23issues, even though they had done, you know, in quotations.
- 23:29Everything, right? They ended up having to
- 23:32euthanize him because he was not safe.
- 23:36I fully support their decision. I have no doubt that this was
- 23:41what needed to happen for the safety of the family, because he
- 23:43was not well, but that's an example of.
- 23:47Hey, we did everything. We were supposed to do and shit,
- 23:50went South really bad. And I know I actually have
- 23:54personally met another dog from that litter.
- 23:57Who's great? And so Just really interesting
- 24:00to me how there's like the flip side of it as well.
- 24:05And here, we sit back to the same point, which is genetics.
- 24:10You can't fight the genetic background.
- 24:13You can, you can structure some things to try to help it.
- 24:19You can support the dog, you can, you know, try to combat it
- 24:24with different behavioral, protocols and everything else.
- 24:28But at the end of the day, A my Lucy was who she was my Daisy
- 24:32was who she was. Remy, was who she was troop, is
- 24:35who he is. We can bust our asses to make
- 24:40everything perfect. But we still have to remember
- 24:43that. That genetic factor is there,
- 24:46and it's a big piece of it, going back to.
- 24:49I want a puppy to get them, you know, want to get a puppy to
- 24:52raise them, right? And then also, it's all in how
- 24:54you raise them. I think the main point is that
- 24:58we want people to think Yeah. And when they're thinking about
- 25:02their next dog, whether it be an adult or a puppy that they
- 25:07really think through what resources do I have.
- 25:11If I get a puppy and I'm going to support it.
- 25:15I'm going to raise it. Do I have a team around me?
- 25:18That can help me with this? Do I have a trainer that I
- 25:22already know? And I know I want to utilize.
- 25:25Do I need to look for someone like me who's doing this as A
- 25:29passion and as a business to help support our family during
- 25:33the formative months or like, Christie is an adult dog.
- 25:39A better decision. Yeah.
- 25:41Logging with loves the perfect father right now but this is
- 25:45amazing. Yeah, I love getting an adult
- 25:49dog. Because you know what?
- 25:51You're getting into. Yes of the time I like yes,
- 25:56environment matters. Like so sometimes People will be
- 26:00like, well, the dog at the shelter wasn't barking and now
- 26:02it's a Parker. Yes.
- 26:03Yeah, environment. There's but for the most part,
- 26:06you are getting a dog, you're seeing who they are.
- 26:09Yeah, as an adult. And so that's not going to
- 26:11change significantly for you. Unless it's a major event
- 26:15happens. Yeah.
- 26:16Unless there's you know some well there's a lot of reasons
- 26:19that it could but for the most part you're pretty much getting
- 26:22who you're bargaining for. Yeah I like to look for dogs
- 26:26that meet the criteria. I'm looking for.
- 26:29Yeah. Yeah, but as an adult, you know,
- 26:31so that I don't have to train that in, it's just who they are
- 26:35and then they can work from there because there's always
- 26:37things we can train, right? Training is never done, but who
- 26:42they are is developed, right? And and I like knowing who they
- 26:47are and if you are looking at it, so say, you're a family who
- 26:52has children and has a cat, you know, then I would say look to
- 26:56organizations who have dogs in foster homes, And you can
- 27:00literally find people who have dogs that are in Foster with
- 27:03kids and a cat. And then you have information
- 27:06about this dog. And it's a, it's a, such an
- 27:10easier transition than what if you start with a puppy that you
- 27:15have no knowledge of and you're not capable of supporting it
- 27:19because life and then the dog ends up not liking kids or you
- 27:25know, chases your cat or whatever.
- 27:27So, I think there's value to rough with your Kids, like, I
- 27:30really love them that ban liked apples and is a lot, FYI.
- 27:34Thiago, when my family visits with my niece and nephews Tiago
- 27:41is highly managed during that time because Tiago is a lot of
- 27:45dog for children. He has not grown up with
- 27:48children and he gets very worried and concerned about
- 27:53children making certain noises, he's not a dog who could easily
- 27:57live with children now, Because he wasn't exposed to it.
- 28:01And also, I just don't think it's, I don't think that he
- 28:04would have a great quality of life.
- 28:05If he lived in a house full of kids, you know, these are all
- 28:08things that you want to be thinking about when you're like,
- 28:11hey let's get a puppy. Hey let's add an adult, an adult
- 28:15dog. Look at your life and see and be
- 28:19honest about it. Choose the right fit for your
- 28:22family. Yeah, there's and there's
- 28:24nothing wrong with wanting a puppy or an adult dog.
- 28:27Know their one. But also So I think we have to
- 28:30stop some of these things because they do.
- 28:34It's all in how you raise them, really?
- 28:36Demonizes shelter dogs, that are adults.
- 28:40Yes really stands in the way of people even considering yes I'm
- 28:44getting an adult dog that is fantastic.
- 28:48One really in a lot of ways, those are the easier way to go.
- 28:51A lot of in a lot of situations they are And we have a lot of
- 28:56examples of shelter dogs, dogs in rescue dogs who came from
- 29:00hoarding situations, dog, dogs, who came from dog fighting bust
- 29:04that are fantastic, family pets, and that spectrum is Broad and
- 29:09wide, but there are a ton of examples.
- 29:12And so if we keep saying it's all in, how you raise them,
- 29:16damn, you're putting like a rubber stamp on all of those.
- 29:19Amazing adult dogs who had a crappy crappy start in life,
- 29:23like my Daisy. Remy.
- 29:25And how unkind is it to say that to someone like your friend who
- 29:30did everything right or to you, right?
- 29:33Did everything, right? And then say all the time, how
- 29:36you're raised them. So this is clearly your fault.
- 29:39Yeah. Like, you're responsible for
- 29:41this and the statement I want to get a puppy to raise them,
- 29:44right? It's like, we'll come back at me
- 29:46and be like, Oh, clearly raised her wrong shit.
- 29:50I mean, I did everything I possibly could my friend.
- 29:53Did everything that As she could and it just went South.
- 29:57Yeah. So when you have somebody say to
- 30:00you Christy, they see Lucy. And like, clearly, we all know
- 30:04she's perfect. So they see Lucy and they say to
- 30:08you. Oh wow.
- 30:09You know, it's all in how you raise them.
- 30:11What do you say? I typically say I didn't raise
- 30:13her, I got some adult. Yeah.
- 30:17And in her younger years, people would often back away from her
- 30:22when I said that she does look like he is Sheep wool.
- 30:26She is a pit bull. We know now we got her DNA of an
- 30:29ethically tested 97% purple but she looks very typical pit bull.
- 30:35Yes, she does. Now she's very not intimidating
- 30:39with her grey face. Yeah.
- 30:40Usually has pearls on. Yeah.
- 30:43And sometimes like a little jacket with unicorns on it.
- 30:47It's or she's a very 0% intimidating to anyone at this
- 30:51point now. So in the past they would back
- 30:56away. Now they just go, it's nice.
- 30:58No. And then they continue petting
- 31:00her. So what is your typical
- 31:02response? If people say to me, I want to
- 31:05get a puppy to raise them, right?
- 31:07Or it's all in how you raise them.
- 31:09I usually just give a little, hey, genetics, as a thing.
- 31:13And a lot of times that will make people sort of stopped and
- 31:18like, give me a quizzical look and I'm a person who loves to
- 31:22educate and if They seem like the doors open.
- 31:27Then I will most certainly walk through it and have a
- 31:29conversation. I mean, clearly, I'm an
- 31:31extrovert, I'll talk to anybody. I also don't feel an obligation
- 31:36to educate the world at this point.
- 31:38So I just like to have my little tagline that I kind of toss out
- 31:43as an automatic response and I let people sit with it and if it
- 31:48plants a seed, great, if it doesn't, that's cool.
- 31:52You know, my experience has been my own experience and has
- 31:55brought me to where I am now. So I just try to really think
- 32:00about things at this point because we everybody who says
- 32:04these statements is coming from a good place, I used to say
- 32:07these things. You know we go back to now we
- 32:10know better so we do better because they're just not
- 32:13accurate statements. Yeah and I think that's what we
- 32:16would hope. People get out of this.
- 32:19Yeah episode is maybe think before you say certain phrases
- 32:23phrases that are Running around all the time that are so
- 32:27socially common and socially accepted but may not be true.
- 32:32Yeah, and consider a lot of just thinking through and
- 32:35consideration of, if you do want to get a puppy, what resources
- 32:39do you have? Yes, what is your knowledge of
- 32:43dog behavior? Do need to up that before you
- 32:45get your puppy and what what support to you or you know, what
- 32:50is stopping you from getting an adult dog?
- 32:53Yes as well. So So, all of those are things,
- 32:57we would hope that this kind of gets you thinking about, like we
- 33:00said, there's no right or wrong answers.
- 33:03I'm going to pick the right dog for your family.
- 33:05But yeah, we just want you to have a good experience with the
- 33:08dog that's happening in your home.
- 33:10Because we also want you to keep in mind, this is going to be
- 33:14your family member for the rest of your life.
- 33:16Well, the rest of their life, if only it was the rest of our
- 33:19lives but the rest of their life and we want it to be enjoyable.
- 33:24I want it to be a great experience for you and the dog.
