- 0:56SPEAKER_00: I'm really excited to chat with Shirley today and to understand what it truly means to formulate clean beauty products in the cosmetic space specifically.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the show, Shirley.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: I'm so excited to be hosting you.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for that gracious introduction.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: And I'm super excited to be here with you today.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: And I'm excited to talk about all things good for you and Clean Beauty.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm excited to learn from you.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: And I I would love to learn more about you.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: If you could tell me a little bit about your background and what got you involved in the beauty space, like to begin with.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: I mean, I know you've done such amazing work here.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: I'd love to learn about what inspired you to go into this direction with your career.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: I don't know if we have enough time to go through it all.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: But I can give you this short version.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: You know, it's funny is I went to school and started out as pre-med, and it didn't quite click to me or click with me.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: And so I started, um, I decided to pay for school on my own, and I worked behind a beauty counter, and I actually worked for the body shop back when it was owned by Anita Roddick, and she was a huge mentor to me and taught me how beauty, a beauty sector in its entirety, how there was so much possibility of doing good, just beyond making you feel good on the outside, also feeling good on the inside.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: It really clicked and resonated with me, and so I kind of stayed within that space.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: And you know, the school part kind of started getting left behind, and I just went full throttle into diving into the beauty space and its potential power to make people feel better about themselves.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: I also am very creative, so I discovered Matt Cosmetics and held key roles with Matt Cosmetics for about eight years, and then did the same for NARS Cosmetics for about 14 years.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: And it was in 2000, time is gonna start to age me, 2006, roughly, I had noted that a lot of my clients were very excited about making good choices for themselves.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: In particular at this time, that there was a lot of talk about parabens and not using anything with parabens in it.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: And in all my years of beauty, conventional beauty, I had been trained and you know, excited about teaching you how to do like the most perfect cat eye, the best smoky eye, how to have the post perfect skin.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: I had not been trained to flip the box over and look at the ingredients.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: And so when I noticed this conversation and beauty being sparked up, I started to do my research because I do not not, I don't like not knowing things.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: I do not like being unable to serve my clients at my highest ability.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: And I did not like what I found.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: And and I became extremely passionate about learning about the ingredients within cosmetics and how they affected our bodies and how they affect us cumulatively.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: You know, when you add it all together, um, there is quite an impact on ourselves.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: To give you a super fun backstory of Well People, there are actually three founders in the brand.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: So if you notice, our E is a little bit backwards, it looks like a three.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: And that is very representative of the three founders who started Well People.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: Um, there was myself, as you know, and you know, my job was to maintain the performance of Well People to make sure that you didn't feel like you were making a sacrifice in choosing clean beauty.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: Then there's Dr.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: Renee Snyder, cosmetic dermatologist.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: Her job was to ensure that we used ingredients in well people that were good for your skin and good for your body.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: And then there's James Walker.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: And James Walker managed our social responsibility.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: So there's our three tenants, like of those are our like mission, our mission tenants, like that guide us, our North Stars every day, but we each personified them in our roles within well people, which is really, really cool.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: And the extra cool part is that we're all best friends from college.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: We met our freshman year.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Oh wow.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: That's I I love that.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: I love that you I love that you describe it.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: Thank you for for telling us that because I think that when it comes to a beauty brand, for me as a consumer, that means a lot to hear that there's so much thought and just even the you know, the creation of the brand, because it takes so much, right?
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: To to not only create something, but then to create a vision and bring it to life and connect with people in a meaningful way.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: I think that that whole journey is just as meaningful for us consumers as it is for founders, you know, and because for me, I I'll tell you shortly, you know, the best brands for me are the ones that I feel like they care about me as a consumer, you know, and that can be seen through the DNA of the brand.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: And it really comes down to a lot of the stuff you're you just discussed, which is you know, really putting thought into who's gonna bring what to the table, you know.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: So I I really value that.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: Thank you for saying that.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: It's so true.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: And it's you'll I became a makeup artist, not because I just I loved makeup, I became a makeup artist because, and not sound like over the top, but I really like engaging with people, touching people.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: I like, you know, when I do makeup, I always have a hand on your shoulder.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: I am very gentle in what I do.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: And the the biggest thing that makes me feel happy is seeing someone transform and not just transform on the outside.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: It's about that transformation within when I'm able to truly listen and to create being a makeup artist, allowed me to be able to transform an entire person's mood and their entire outlook, you know, within an hour's time at the most, in ways.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: And choosing to be you know a part of well people and starting well people was a big part of that.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: I was able to physically make you feel and look good or better and enhanced, if you will.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: But then most importantly, the most important part is that I was able to make you feel good on the inside about the choices that you were making.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: No, that that really resonates with me.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: I think that in the category of makeup, there's a lot of confusion, I would say, you know, because I mean, obviously, you know, the pros, you guys know what you're doing and you really understand makeup, I think, from a very philosophical side too, right?
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's it's beauty is I in my opinion, just as much philosophical as it is like tangible in what we do.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: And I think that for consumers, it becomes this constant like tug, you know, tug of war between finding the best product, but then also like, does this really earn a space in my life, you know, in terms of I will I keep coming back to it?
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: Do I value it enough to keep coming back to it?
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: And so I think it's very interesting the makeup space for me in the beauty industry, because I think there's a lot that just doesn't get talked about, you know, from that standpoint of what you said, that inner space, that inner like what you feel on the inside when you actually feel good about the way your makeup looks or good about the way that you've done something to improve your lifestyle or the way that you, you know, I guess uh perceive yourself, you know.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: So yeah, it's very interesting.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: I I'm inter I'm really I'm really intrigued though, because I want to learn more about like where did you find the white space when you created well people?
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: I mean, what was the true white space that you were looking to fill?
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: Oh, there was a lot of white space because we started Well People in 2008, is when it was launched.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: But there you can step back a couple of years when we were starting to do our research and research on our own, by the way, too, of learning what convention the big difference between conventional and at that time, I'll use the word natural makeup.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: The thing is, if you go take yourself and you put yourself in that little time capsule and go back to 2008, you know, there really wasn't a beauty brand that was clean, that and and you know, you could go into a Whole Foods and look at Whole Body.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: And that's kind of where our idea started to be truthful, standing there in whole body, wanting to make a good choice for ourselves, but just really none of it felt sexy, none of it really truly performed the textures at the time.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: You know, now natural beauty or clean beauty has come a long way in terms of formulation.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: Formulations of clean beauty back then were thick, were oily, they did not perform, and they didn't always feel good on the skin, and they didn't stand up nearly to the test that conventional makeup could, you know, could stand up to.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: And so there, there in itself is the white space that we found.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: And you know, in beginning to start product development for well people, those were all of the boxes that we needed to click.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: I needed to make sure, remember when I was doing makeup, I would keep my well people samples in my kit.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: And I would not tell my clients what I was using on them.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: You know, it was just in a typical uh little, you know, I would, I would do, I'd slice off, you know, pieces of the makeup and put it onto a palette so that they wouldn't know what I was using or what brand I was using.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: Afterwards, I'd ask, how does your face feel?
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: How long did it stay on?
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: Get some really great feedback from my personal clients.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: In the end, I would then say, guess what I used on you?
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: I used a cosmetic that is based in natural ingredients.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: They'd be like, What?
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: No way.
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: Because there was a perception, you know, the misperception that natural could not perform, and for very good reason, reason.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: But I made it my mission to prove that we could make it perform.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: And luckily, I found formulators who were so excited about working with me in creating a cosmetic, you know, that could go toe-to-toe with conventional.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: It just became a super great challenge and a super fun challenge, and we learned so much along the way.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, I think when it comes to clean beauty, there's, I mean, I won't lie, there's a lot of there's a lot of people who use that term, I think, you know, and it means different things to different people.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: So I would love to learn what you feel like truly, like what is a clean beauty commitment?
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: Like, what does that mean to you?
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: My commitment level goes pretty high right there.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: And so it's I almost have trouble speaking to the word clean, you know, because it has so many definitions associated with it.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: For us, it's all about transparency.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: So we lead everything we do with the goal of not being afraid to be transparent.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: If we can't be transparent about it, we're simply not going to do it.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: We are also going to lead through education, not fear.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: So there is no room for fear-mongering here.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: Life is hard enough as it is.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: So, you know, we are not here to judge, we are here to love.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: Say that over and over again.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: Um, but what we are here to do is take the pressure away from you as a consumer in making choices that are good for you.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: So we have restricted over 2,900 ingredients from our cosmetics.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: We are affiliated with the environmental working group.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: And I'm happy, I'm not sure.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: I know you just spoke to Ken Cook, so you were very well versed.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: Um, very well versed.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: I mean, Dr.
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: Ecta, we were the very first color brand to be EWG verified and to join their program.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: Oh, wow.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: The very first.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: And I'm very proud to say that on this very day, we are the brand that has the most, the the color brand that has the most EWG verified products.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: So we are, you know, we are we are not only a pioneer within this industry, but I actually feel that we were a pioneer within the EWG verification verification process and the birth of that process in itself.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: I go back with Ken, I go back with Josh Jocelyn Weill.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: We just did an event together here in Brooklyn, and it was, it's like seeing, you know, just they're like seeing old friends when we meet up together.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: But that that commitment of EWG verification tells the consumer, A, we're doing everything we can to care about you, to care about the environment.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: What it that badge does, though, for you is that when you shop for well people, you can flip over a box, you see the EWG verified badge, you don't need to scour the internet and read every single ingredient.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: I do, I do advocate for reading about ingredients at all times.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: But when you do see the EWG badge on well people's products, you can feel very confident that you're making a solid choice for you and your family.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I I love that.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: I love that you have had this like really kind of, you know, in your DNA from the beginning.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: That means that really speaks volumes.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, truly, I I think it's something to really look at and and aspire for towards.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: If you're, you know, a new brand, or there's so many brands nowadays.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: I feel like a new one pops up every day, you know, in the beauty space.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: And I and I think sometimes with you know, just me talking to people and founders, I think sometimes it's hard to navigate your way towards this place of am I morally and ethically doing something that is is not, you know, it's aligned and it's not going to actually harm people in the long run, right?
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: So that's where it's like this kind of commitment means a lot, I think, not only to consumers, but even to like, I guess, younger founders to look at and say, yeah, you know, there is a standard, and I have to look at that standard and I have to maintain it.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: And I really applaud you for setting that standard because I mean, the beauty space is so it's so vast, you know, and it can things can get lost.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: And and I think the vision can get lost, you know, when people are creating brands and putting new products out there that are, you know, especially now with like TikTok shop coming up and all this, there's so many people creating things.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: So it's important to keep these fundamentals in mind.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: And it's it's wonderful to see that well, people have done that from the beginning.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: That's really cool.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: I would love to learn though, because I know that, you know, on that note, uh, with so many people now looking at beauty, I think um there people are, I think, now dissecting the beauty industry a little bit more.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: I mean, this is just my opinion, but you know, they're really looking for more inclusion, they're looking for more transparency.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: Is every everybody represented equally?
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: I would learn would love to learn from you, you know, when you were building one of the first clean beauty brands, especially, you know, being a female founder and keeping all of the things in mind.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: What were some of the hurdles or or challenges that you had to really kind of, you know, face and and go through to create something like this?
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: It must have been difficult.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: It was.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: It was when we started, well, people were in the middle of a recession, first and foremost.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: And so gathering up the funding, we were completely self-funded for most of our existence pre-acquisition.
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: And you know, I there was that, right?
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: Like starting first, I'll just say it, you know, out loud, and I feel for every founder, and I and I love that being a founder, it involves such passion and such love and such care to kick something off and to build it.
- 17:35SPEAKER_01: And you know, in building well people, trust me, we were not at a lack for passion.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: And the dream was very, very large.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: For me, especially, being Latina, being a part of the LGBTQ community, being female, I had a lot of self-limiting beliefs in myself out of the gate.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: And so I needed to, and I still do, but I really needed to kind of take that step back and applaud myself and push myself to do what I believed in, you know, which was believing that Good For You Beauty could be accessible for everyone, believing that well people was going to be a part of a mission that transformed people.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: You know, I would always tell my team members in our we have it, we had we started with a studio in Austin, Texas, and I would tell my team members anyone who walks in this door is here because they're trying to do something good for themselves.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: So everything we do has to be led with empathy and understanding and caring for them, for that person, first and foremost.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: And they are also scared because in leading when in 2008, and very, you know, and within that time frame, clean beauty wasn't quite understood.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: Again, I mentioned fear-mongering early on.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: People were scared, they were afraid of all the, they were very overwhelmed about the choices uh that they could make in ingredients.
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: So we really had to come from a place of love, from a place of calm, and from a place of good intention.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: And in speaking, you know, we were really uh, my partners and I were very faceforward.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: And so we spoke on a lot of panels.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: We were very open about our journey, and we each and every one of us has our own story to tell.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: But there was one thing that became very apparent, which is very apparent right now, is that younger communities were really wanting to make these good choices, but that they couldn't afford them.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: So, you know, Clean Beauty launched at very high prices in general back, you know, back in the day.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: There weren't a lot of affordable Queen Beauty brands.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: And and I'll be honest too.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: Well, people wasn't when we first started because of cost of goods, it's really hard to be good.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: I say over and over again, it's hard to be good.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: We lowered our prices significantly soon after launching, and I'm talking about 30% and took a huge risk.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: But so we were sitting on a panel, and this was out in California, and there was one young girl who spoke up, and she's like, you know, you're speaking about how I shouldn't do this, I should do this, I'm making bad choices here, I need to make good choices here.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: But how can I do it if I can't afford you?
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: I'm just gonna end up going back to the drugstore.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: And that really resonated.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: So, and guess what?
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's and it's the truth.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: You know, we have there's more than 50% of Gen Z consumers that look at ingredients.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: This is the path forward now.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: And I am so, so happy to see that.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: And I can't wait to see, you know, my son who's alpha.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: I can't wait to see how he evolved and what his generation evolves into.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: And I really feel they're gonna be a powerhouse in making this world better.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: You know, I don't want to talk in circles, but I get very passionate about it.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: And so no, it's a it's valid.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I think that you know, Gen Z, like from what I've seen, that they're they're like the generation that's really pulling this mask off, you know what I mean, and saying, like, listen, we need to know.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: We need to know everything.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: We want to know ingredients, we want to know how to use this.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: Can we afford it?
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: If we can't afford it, why can't we afford it?
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: You know, they want to know everything.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: And I love that about them.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: Like, I really love them for that, you know.
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: So do I.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: I the you know, I surround myself with like most of my associates are Gen Z, and I love hearing.
- 21:59unknown: I
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Them everything like what is going on?
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: How does this make you feel?
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: Like, tell me, you know, their passion for ingredients and their passion for really just education.
- 22:11unknown: Yeah.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: It drives them.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: And it and it's it's so wonderful, so exciting, and so refreshing to see.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: You know, I'm a woman in my 50s, so I just want to I want to be revelent.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: I want to keep going.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: I have an eight-year-old.
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: I'm you know, I'm trying to bust a move here in every single way I can.
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: And to do good in the process.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I can imagine.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's it's just, I think it's just nice to see that the consumers, I mean, I think consumer values have really shifted even from when I was younger.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: Honestly, Shirley, like I remember my biggest thing was finding my shade, you know, back then.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: I and I remember that was a struggle.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: And that's another thing I really love about the brand is that you guys are I mean, you really do hit hard there.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: And I've always I've found great products, you know, and through well people.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: I think they work beautifully for my skin tone.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: That that matters to me, but that was my concern, is my point when I was young, you know.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: So I wasn't thinking about clean beauty and I wasn't thinking about, you know, reading labels.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: And so to see them now make it like Gen Z really pushed that envelope, you know, and they've really kind of pushed this narrative forward of no, we gotta know more.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: I love seeing that.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: And you know, yeah, I'm excited to see what Jen Alpha brings to the table for sure.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: We're we're we're positioning ourselves to meet that demand for sure, you know, and that's one thing going back to the question, you know, in terms of obstacles and so speak, you know, looking at the future, looking at future founders, you know, I do I want them to know that making, you know, the to not compromise, to not sacrifice, and it may slow you down.
- 23:46SPEAKER_01: You know, our cadence of of being able, well, especially early on, our cadence in launching products was very slow, but it was slow for a reason because we weren't going to put something on the market simply because we felt it was time to.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: We were putting things on the market when we felt that they met every single, you know, they checked off every box of our standards.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: And so that is what you know, for future founders, for future builders, just never ever compromise on your vision because that's what's going to stick.
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: That's where the legacy begins.
- 24:25SPEAKER_01: And and that is where you know, well people remains.
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: It's consistently, consistently taking our time, thinking about you, thinking about the environment, and positioning ourselves to create the best product possible, you know, for your health and for your skin.
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: I would love to actually kind of talk about that a little bit more as the skin aspect, because I feel like now, you know, there's a lot more that we want from our makeup products than just, you know, a really great lipstick or a really great blush.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: I think people are now understanding the value of, you know, whatever I'm putting on my skin, it's going to be on my skin for a long time.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: I want to make sure I'm not harm doing any harm, you know.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: If anything, I want to do good.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: So keeping those skin benefits in mind, I mean, I think the brand really stands out to me because you guys have such powerful ingredients that are great for the skin.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: You know, how is that, you know, in terms of really merging these two worlds of makeup and skincare and creating something that's really good for you, genuinely, like to just to use on a day-to-day basis?
- 25:34SPEAKER_01: You know, I like to say that Mother Nature provides, right?
- 25:37SPEAKER_01: So that was super exciting.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: By nature, kind of pun intended, I guess, creating a product of plant-based ingredients naturally, again, all right.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: I'm using that word, created a hybrid.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: You know, instantly we created this multifunctional product that not only looked good on your skin, but it's also good for your skin.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: Because all of a sudden, where we're moving silicones, right?
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: Well, people, we simply choose not to use silicon, any kind of silicone or petroleum-dried product because it's not renewable, they stick around forever, they may not necessarily be toxic for your skin, but they're not wonderful for the environment.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: And what we've replaced ingredients like silicone with are ingredients like broccoli seed oil.
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: Broccoli seed oil is a perfect substitution for silicone.
- 26:30SPEAKER_01: It glides on the skin the same way, it penetrates the skin, it has a high molecular size, so it penetrates slowly.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: So it helps you get that feel that we like get when we use like a product that has silicone in it.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: We also use delicious ingredients like snow mushrooms.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: Snow mushroom is nature's hyaluronic acid.
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: It'll absorb 500 times weight of its weight in water.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: Um, when we created our biotent, our SPF multifunctional moisturizer, we use non-micronized zinc.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: So there are no nanoparticles in well people.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: And it was actually the broccoli, this is how we discovered broccoli seed oil being a great substitute for dimethicone or silicone.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: It was because we were creating this SPF multifunctional SPF uh tinted moisturizer.
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: It was coming on chalky because we chose to use zinc, which is a natural sunblock.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: The skin, we kept testing it, and skin was chalky and chalky and chalky.
- 27:32SPEAKER_01: Our chemist came to us and he's like, why don't you try this broccoli seed oil?
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: And it worked phenomenally.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: So nature does provide if you keep pushing and hoping for that solution.
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: And guess what?
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: Broccoli seed oil is really great for you.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: It's loaded with vitamin K, it has natural skin brightening properties to it, so it's a win-win all around.
- 27:56SPEAKER_01: And you know, when we look at the well-people consumer, our consumer loves simplicity.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: And simplicity is driven by multifunctional products, and so we have you know our latest launch with our which is our supernatural complexion stick, which is your foundation and your concealer, it's super portable, you can use it the way that you want to use it, which could be you know all over or just you know, in just specific spots, or just under the eyes to brighten up the eye area.
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: It's your choice.
- 28:34SPEAKER_01: But whenever you're using, for instance, our supernatural complexion stick, you could feel good that you're also infusing your skin with the benefits of black cumin seed oil, with aloe.
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: So you're getting all these great benefits.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: It's like a double whammy of with any product that you use from well people.
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: And so it it's it also, you know, we're big on helping you make your own choices because you mentioned you spoke earlier about the overwhelm, the overwhelm in the beauty industry.
- 29:04SPEAKER_01: Like now, if I walk into a Mac store, I am instantly feeling that overwhelm because there are too many choices.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: So we we purposely keep our brand very well edited so that you don't have to feel the overwhelm.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: You know, you feel the overwhelm making a good choice, but now you have to choose which color works for you.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: And that's a hard thing to do.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: So we try to be very mindful as we develop in creating shades and tones that are extremely flexible for all skin tones, which is wonderful.
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: No, I love that though about the brand.
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: It's like that was one thing I wanted to actually just really commend you on was the fact that it is a brand that you can utilize the products in so many different ways.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, the for example, the blush sticks, I use them quite often for obviously like blusher, but then also on top of my eyelids or for a little bit of flush on my lips.
- 30:02SPEAKER_00: Like it's really versatile.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: And I love products like that because I'm in medicine.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: I have no time, you know, I'm online, I literally no time in the morning to do anything, much less my makeup.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: And so if you're on the go or if you're busy, which I know so many people these days, I mean, we're running around, you know, everywhere.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: So it's really it's convenience, but it's also knowing that the product you're using is good.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: Because sometimes I think in the yeah, it's c it's a cluttered space, the beauty industry now, but I think also in that there it leads to confusion a lot, you know, and you kind of lose sight of like what is actually good for me in all of these products that I have, you know, in the in the rush of putting on your makeup, sometimes you forget that these are my values.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: I do want to use something that's genuinely good for me, my skin.
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: And, you know, that can be lost when you're in a rush.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: So I like knowing that it's kind of like a safety net in a lot of ways, you know.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: So that's very cool.
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: I wanted to ask though, you know, in terms of I we spoke a little bit about Gen Z earlier, you know, and and all the new things that are coming up, but in terms of trends, I know that in the beauty industry, trends are huge.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: You know, people really gravitate towards, you know, whatever their friend is buying.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: I mean, what are your what are things that excite you in that space, like and that are trending right now or that you've seen, you know, really coming up in the industry?
- 31:23SPEAKER_01: What I'm getting really excited about is, you know, they call it, I I just love it seeing skin, right?
- 31:30SPEAKER_01: Skin, the look of skin is becoming very prevalent.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: So we can we can speak to that, you know, in several different ways.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: There's cloud-like skin, there's the French girl look.
- 31:43SPEAKER_01: But what's really cool about these trends that are coming up, I find, or the clean girl look is one of them as well.
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's that less is more.
- 31:54SPEAKER_01: But, you know, it's it's less is more.
- 31:57SPEAKER_01: So that I get really excited about.
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: But I'm also excited about, let's just be honest here, like the fact that it's makeup, right?
- 32:04SPEAKER_01: And we're that that that the consumer is learning to use makeup differently.
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: Gone is the way of just taking on your makeup, and it's fine.
- 32:14SPEAKER_01: If you want to do that, you do you.
- 32:16SPEAKER_01: I have no problem with that.
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: I appreciate all you know, all trend in makeup, but currently, right now, I get super excited about the fact that we are doing more with less.
- 32:29SPEAKER_01: So it's about stains on the lips, you know, flushes of color on the cheeks, focus on the eyelashes, but not necessarily on the eyeshadow.
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: And if we are, we're focusing on pops of color, right?
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, this this fall and for the holiday, it's all about using metallic eyeshadows strategically on the eye, you know, in a pop, just one single color, not having to be over inundated with needing to create like this masterpiece of color on the eyes.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: Instead, what if you coat your eyelid or layer your full eyelid with this a gorgeous metallic gold or silver or a cranberry for maximum impact?
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: You know, it's also about like what I like to say, and choosing your weapon and beauty right now.
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: So if you're if you're focusing on the eyes, those lips are nude and natural.
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: If you're focusing on that lip and doing a high high impact red, you know, then your eyes are softened and more natural, and maybe just the focus is on the lashes and the skin, all between that is touchable, natural, you know, not overtly glossy, not overtly matte.
- 33:48SPEAKER_01: So seeing like these nuances of natural beauty being implemented in trend right now, it it gets me excited.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: I think it's fun and it is very achievable, which is very much in line with you know our our desire to always be accessible.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 34:12SPEAKER_00: No, I think that I can definitely get behind that as well.
- 34:14SPEAKER_00: I think it's really cool to see people gravitating towards it.
- 34:18SPEAKER_00: I mean, those days of where Instagram makeup was a thing.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: I I just I don't know.
- 34:23SPEAKER_00: I was wondering to myself for so long, like when are we gonna see people reveal their skin again, you know, rather than pile up tons and tons of makeup.
- 34:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like it was kind of like a little overwhelming because you want to look wonderful and you see your favorite influencer, but then you realize it takes 15 steps to get that routine or to that get that look, you know, and it just becomes this overwhelming, like, oh, like what a feat, you know, to really accomplish that.
- 34:50SPEAKER_00: But then yeah, I I completely resonate with what you said in terms of like this same girl look, you know, I that's a really up my alley as well.
- 34:58SPEAKER_01: So yeah, being okay, being okay with our imperfections, being okay with our freckles, being okay with a blemish that may pop up from time to time, being okay, you know, with having scars, like it is okay.
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: And that is what I love seeing.
- 35:15SPEAKER_01: I love seeing our younger consumer being empowered, and I love seeing it on Instagram, you know, and again, I mentioned I'm older, so you know, I'm still looking at Facebook from time to time.
- 35:27SPEAKER_01: Uh, but seeing that that seeing our just seeing our the younger population really showing up for that, showing up towards self-acceptance, showing up in ways that can still be fun, right?
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, especially when it comes to makeup.
- 35:44SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 35:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I completely agree.
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: And you know, what's really cool is that you're you're giving options.
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's the number one thing is if you provide options and you provide resources for people to explore these other avenues, you know, and like understanding that this doesn't one thing doesn't have to be the trend, you know, there's other ways and there's other avenues.
- 36:07SPEAKER_00: I mean, people are gonna be more inclined to opt in, you know.
- 36:11SPEAKER_00: And so I think that what the brand stands for, and this is kind of what I meant earlier when I was saying I think beauty is very philosophical in a lot of ways, is that it's really by it, it's understanding where you fit in, you know, and finding your place.
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: And I feel like this whole clean look movement and this trend, it's allowing the younger generation or even, you know, any generation to feel like, okay, wait, hold on.
- 36:35SPEAKER_00: I don't need five shades of concealer, you know, to get that under-eye look.
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: And I don't need whatever I think I need.
- 36:41SPEAKER_00: It can just be two or three products that are just great products, you know, and they give me what I need to look my best.
- 36:48SPEAKER_00: That's I think that's very powerful, you know, from a like that standpoint of philosophy.
- 36:52SPEAKER_00: I think that really resonates on such a deep level, if you think about it, you know, and it really empowers you more than anything because you don't hide behind pounds and pounds makeup anymore.
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: You're just accepting who you are and enhancing your features and loving that.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: And I it's beautiful.
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: So yeah.
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: Sorry, I got a little, you know, excited there.
- 37:13SPEAKER_00: I just I really in that, you know.
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: I I feel like women, especially, like we're always bombarded with these crazy beauty standards.
- 37:21SPEAKER_00: And I a part of that is just the excessive makeup, you know what I mean?
- 37:25SPEAKER_00: Like, I just believe that.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: So I really I truly believe in what you're doing with Well People.
- 37:31SPEAKER_00: I think Well People is a brand that's it's pushing this forward of, you know, just listen, here's some great products, you know, and you can play around and have fun, but you don't need the 50 products that you're seeing an influencer.
- 37:44SPEAKER_00: You don't need that.
- 37:45SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's the truth.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: You know, I that really I I value that a lot as a consumer.
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: So it's wonderful.
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: But I I want to ask you, Shirley, I really think that, you know, in terms of the clean beauty conversation, I would love to get your, you know, your feedback on what do you think we need more of to educate consumers more about clean beauty?
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: Because I, you know, as we discussed earlier, there's a lot of stuff out there, and clean beauty does mean different things to different people.
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: But in terms of education, what do you think is a great way to educate and empower people to lean more towards clean options?
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: I think the brands need to get clearer on their standards and and really get behind the transparency.
- 38:29SPEAKER_01: You know, it's we were having this conversation not too long ago, actually, you know, about what sets well people apart from all of the other clean beauty brands.
- 38:39SPEAKER_01: And transparency is key.
- 38:42SPEAKER_01: Really being honest about your ingredients and why you choose to use them.
- 38:48SPEAKER_01: And I feel that a lot of clean beauty brands are, you know, there's a there's so many levels of clean beauty.
- 38:57SPEAKER_01: So I really wish there was a rating system that you know, I'm all for everybody trying to do good at their own capacity within their own capacity, but I'm not okay with positioning yourself within a space where you are kind of on the same in the same line as a brand that is like for, you know, say the true naturalist, right?
- 39:26SPEAKER_01: Again, I'm not here to judge, I'm here to love, but I do think it is super important to be just very clear about your ingredient choices and the why.
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: And I don't see a lot of that happening.
- 39:41SPEAKER_01: And you know, they are your that ingredient deck on the back of a box.
- 39:46SPEAKER_01: There are still ways to hide so much, you know.
- 39:50SPEAKER_01: Here in terms of ingredients, I mean, like I said, we ban, we restrict over 2,900 ingredients.
- 39:56SPEAKER_01: The FDA restricts only 11.
- 39:58SPEAKER_01: So there is a lot of freedom for cosmetic brands to kind of pepper in different types of ingredients that the consumers may not be so familiar with, or to simply hide those ingredients under different names.
- 40:18SPEAKER_01: And so that is the number one thing that I think that anyone who aspires, or any brand or any builder or any founder who aspires to be within Clean Beauty, just be honest and don't ever be afraid to break down your ingredients and share the why.
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: That is super important to me.
- 40:40SPEAKER_01: Not hiding ingredients under different names, which is also very, very possible and very prevalent.
- 40:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like fragrance, right?
- 40:47SPEAKER_00: Like fragrance.
- 40:49SPEAKER_01: Especially within the fragrance space, yeah, especially there.
- 40:53SPEAKER_01: That is not okay by me, and it's not okay by the well-people consumer.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: Um, so you know, that is, I think, where brands can start.
- 41:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 41:03SPEAKER_01: And then that way that enables the consumer to make more clear choices, right?
- 41:08SPEAKER_01: Instantly about the cosmetic that they choose for themselves, instead of having to make assumptions, instead of having to do research for hours upon hours to decide if this is the right mascara for me.
- 41:22SPEAKER_01: If that transparency were there, it would be much easier to navigate the clean beauty space.
- 41:28SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 41:29SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 41:30SPEAKER_00: No, I I completely agree.
- 41:31SPEAKER_00: I think, I mean, it still is kind of scary though, you know, flipping the box over and looking at the ingredients.
- 41:37SPEAKER_00: It is, yeah, it's a lot.
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: And I think that, yeah, I completely agree with you.
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: I think there's there's a lot of ingredients.
- 41:44SPEAKER_00: I mean, even I have a science background and I look at some of these, some of these names, and I'm like, I don't know what that is.
- 41:49SPEAKER_00: You know, like even if I were to dissect that, I have an organic chemistry background.
- 41:53SPEAKER_00: I can't, I mean, I have to really go online, you know, and figure out what is this chemical and do I really do you really need this to formulate your product?
- 42:02SPEAKER_00: But yeah, I agree.
- 42:03SPEAKER_00: I I think it's yeah, transparency, like you said.
- 42:06SPEAKER_00: So thank you so much for for clarifying that.
- 42:09SPEAKER_00: I think it helps a lot, you know, especially be being able to learn that from those who've seen this this industry in and out, you know, and you understand how formulations work.
- 42:18SPEAKER_00: I mean, for consumers, I think we we look at you know things like, for example, for a long time, people are saying the first three things like, and this is for skincare, for the first the first three things on the ingredient list, that's really all that's in your product, you know, like that's all you need to worry about.
- 42:34SPEAKER_00: And so we get on board with that, but it's really I I think a deeper question than that, you know, and really understanding so it's yeah, it truly is, and it truly is.
- 42:45SPEAKER_01: And I mean, you can be, you know, doctor, you can you can say you can agree with me completely that you know I can speak about plant-based ingredients, but there are also synthetic ingredients that are good for you and that are better choices for you and your skin.
- 42:57SPEAKER_01: And it's just again familiarizing yourself with that and not letting the overwhelm take over.
- 43:04SPEAKER_01: And so it's it is it is tough.
- 43:09SPEAKER_01: There's there are, you know, you flip over an ingredient deck and all of a sudden you're overwhelmed by these big words.
- 43:16SPEAKER_01: But I think there's wonderful tools out there to support you.
- 43:18SPEAKER_01: The EWG and the Skin Deep Database, you know, to name my very top one, are out there to help you, you know, kind of renavigate this space on your own.
- 43:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 43:31SPEAKER_00: No, I love the EWG too.
- 43:33SPEAKER_00: I I think they're just doing great work.
- 43:35SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's it's so good to have such tools, you know, because yeah, it's very hard to figure this stuff out.
- 43:42SPEAKER_00: I mean, if you go on Google and you type half these, you know, half these chemicals out, you're not gonna get any kind of answer.
- 43:47SPEAKER_00: You're just gonna understand that this is what it is, you know, and but it doesn't make sense in this, you know, context of formulation and what it's actually doing.
- 43:55SPEAKER_00: So I agree.
- 43:57SPEAKER_01: Oh, and it's also just to throw this in.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: too if if you are you know if you're can if you are a consumer and you are doing that and you're looking things up you have to keep in mind that whatever no matter which brand you're looking at whatever ingredient you are looking up you're looking at it in the context of it being like at a neat level it's 100% level right yeah yeah formulation it may be at like a 0.0001% level so i always I always like to associate it to making a margarita you know we started well people in Austin Texas we like margaritas so so you know you're looking at it like you're taking a shot of tequila right but we're not talking about just that shot of tequila we're talking about an entire we're talking about the margarita we're talking about the whole thing so when you are looking up ingredients you know keep in mind that what you're reading about them is at their highest input yeah it is not broken up within the formulation and so that is very important knowledge you know to take with you as you do navigate this space and as you do navigate an ingredient deck.
- 45:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah absolutely I I couldn't agree more I mean it's it's really it's trickier than it looks so yeah definitely I I want to ask though you know sure what's next for the brand what's anything on the horizon for well people any new launches yes well speaking of the EWG you know the process right is changing for well people we have we have we have a distinct and very tight connection to the environmental working group and the way the process normally works is that you launch your product and then you get it EWG verified after the fact which is can be a very challenging process because you submit over every ingredient use percentage levels any testing done associated with those ingredients and it's quite lengthy.
- 46:08SPEAKER_01: So we could look previously we could launch a product but not receive the badge from until months after so the EWG is working directly with well people now so that we can actually launch with the badge which is wonderful because they're they're they're that means they're directly connected to the formulation process which you can feel really good about that which is super cool.
- 46:33SPEAKER_01: Our lip oils we are our lip oils have taken off and so we are launching extensions on our lip oils and then we are also going to be really focusing on a key sector a a key group of of people that have been honestly a big part of well peopled existence which is mothers when you know a lot when you when you get pregnant or when a woman is planning on getting pregnant or when a woman is you know a newfound she's just discovered she's pregnant all of a sudden her choices start to change on every level and you know mothers were were and are a big part of well people and why we do what we do and why we sit and we research ingredients diligently Dr.
- 47:30SPEAKER_01: Renee Snyder my fellow founder you know she wanted to be a part of well people back in the day when we were telling her about birthing this brand um James and I sharing the story she's like no you guys have to include me she was already she has three children now back then she didn't have any children she she was starting to make all these great choices in her life as we were telling her about this big dream we had and she's like no I want to be a part of this I want to do something good I want to make choices easier for women like me that are looking to be mothers so we are really getting behind our pregnancy friendly claim and we are really getting behind supporting new mothers that's so cool.
- 48:24SPEAKER_00: I love that I think that's huge because there's nothing out there for like in terms of like really addressing like maternity and like is it safe is it clean you know is it good good enough to use while you're pregnant after you're pregnant that's huge.
- 48:38SPEAKER_01: I I love that oh yeah I mean this is just creating like one thing that can make it easy for a new mother you know they're already dealing with like oh my gosh can I eat this can I drink this what is this can I be exposed to this so you want to know what we're gonna make it just that much easier at least there's this one thing that you won't have to worry about and that is your beauty you can make it this choice and feel instantly good.
- 49:03SPEAKER_00: And this is across the brand not just a specific product it is across the brand all of well people becoming you know the pregnancy safe go-to that's so cool that's really really neat I love that congratulations on that initiative that's really powerful and I love that you're doing that we definitely need that in the industry I I can't lie I I haven't seen many brands commit to this specific need and I think it's long overdue you know because like you said you know women when they're pregnant there's too much to worry about you should not be worried about your beauty no there's so much to worry about.
