Latest / Foul Territory / Fair Territory: Dodgers & Brewers 1 win away, Yankees on the brink
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the Monday edition of Fair Territory. I'm
- 0:04Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal, coming from New York City right now getting
- 0:08Speaker 1: ready for tonight's broadcast of Game three of the Division
- 0:11Speaker 1: series Yankees Blue Jays, Blue Jays leading to nothing. But
- 0:14Speaker 1: of course I want to start off with last night's proceedings,
- 0:18Speaker 1: and particularly the proceedings in Philadelphia, where the Dodgers took
- 0:22Speaker 1: a two games to non lead four to three victory
- 0:25Speaker 1: over the Phillies. We are steamrolling toward a potential Dodgers
- 0:30Speaker 1: Brewers and LCS, both teams the Dodgers and Brewers leading
- 0:33Speaker 1: their respective division series two games to none, and a
- 0:37Speaker 1: Dodgers Brewers NLCS would be big market versus small market.
- 0:42Speaker 1: It would be in the eyes of some referendum on
- 0:45Speaker 1: whether the sport needs a salary cap. But let's not
- 0:48Speaker 1: get into all that just yet. We have some more
- 0:51Speaker 1: fun to discuss regarding these two series, and of course
- 0:54Speaker 1: the two American League Division series going on as well.
- 0:58Speaker 1: The Dodgers all regularly season I found to be frustrating.
- 1:02Speaker 1: I thought they were coasting. I wondered, like a lot
- 1:05Speaker 1: of people, including their manager Dave Roberts, whether they would
- 1:09Speaker 1: be able to turn it on at the appropriate time.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I guess we have our answer. They've won nine straight games,
- 1:16Speaker 1: including the first two of this series, thirteen of fifteen.
- 1:19Speaker 1: The starting pitching looks like nothing else in the sport
- 1:23Speaker 1: right now, so dominant, and we've seen that in these
- 1:25Speaker 1: first two games in Philadelphia. They took those two. They
- 1:29Speaker 1: had that frantic bottom of the ninth last night, the
- 1:32Speaker 1: hold on, which started with Blake trianon kind of an
- 1:34Speaker 1: odd decision by Dave Roberts, then featured the wheel play,
- 1:38Speaker 1: of course, but the story of this series so far
- 1:41Speaker 1: is what Otani has done, and it's what Snell has done.
- 1:44Speaker 1: As Jason Stark wrote this morning in The Athletic, in
- 1:47Speaker 1: a span of thirty nine batters at one point, when
- 1:50Speaker 1: you look at Otani first and then Snell, they allowed
- 1:53Speaker 1: two hits. Two hits in thirty nine batters. And as
- 1:57Speaker 1: well as the Phillies have pitched Sanchez and Lozardo, they've
- 2:01Speaker 1: been outpitched. And the Phillies again in the postseason, are
- 2:05Speaker 1: struggling offensively. Now. I would suggest that a big reason
- 2:09Speaker 1: they are struggling offensively in the postseason is because the
- 2:12Speaker 1: Dodgers pitching has been so good. But Turner, Schwarber, and
- 2:16Speaker 1: Harper right now two for twenty one. You could say
- 2:19Speaker 1: the Dodgers are kind of in a similar spot Otani's
- 2:22Speaker 1: one for nine, Otani bets and Freeman just four for
- 2:25Speaker 1: twenty five combined. But the Dodgers have found a way
- 2:29Speaker 1: to win these two games. And as we go forward here,
- 2:34Speaker 1: it's almost difficult for me to imagine any team outpitching
- 2:38Speaker 1: the Dodgers what they have right now. In addition to
- 2:42Speaker 1: three brilliant starters, of course, I'm talking about a Tani
- 2:44Speaker 1: Snell and the game three choice, your Shinobu Yamamoto, who
- 2:48Speaker 1: will be most likely a top five sal Young finalist,
- 2:51Speaker 1: We're also talking about a bullpen that, yes has struggled,
- 2:54Speaker 1: continues to struggle, but is currently fortified by four other
- 3:00Speaker 1: are starting pitchers, four Glass now Kershaw, Sian and of
- 3:05Speaker 1: course Roki Sasaki, who has emerged as a pretty fair
- 3:09Speaker 1: closer in recent days. So right now you have a
- 3:13Speaker 1: situation where the Phillies are scraping. They're going back to
- 3:17Speaker 1: LA It's hard to imagine them winning this series, of course,
- 3:21Speaker 1: And then if the series ends at some point and
- 3:24Speaker 1: the Phillies end up losing, there are gonna be a
- 3:27Speaker 1: whole lot of questions about the future of this team,
- 3:29Speaker 1: how they're going to go forward. Schwarber and real Muto
- 3:32Speaker 1: are free agents. You would think the Phillies want them back.
- 3:35Speaker 1: They don't have obvious internal replacements. Rob Thompson as manager,
- 3:39Speaker 1: I would say he has done a good job. He
- 3:41Speaker 1: is not the problem. But I would expect if the
- 3:44Speaker 1: Phillies go out there to be some kind of change.
- 3:47Speaker 1: So that's Philadelphia and La the Brewers. Last night they
- 3:51Speaker 1: took it to the Cubs yet again, and we're seeing
- 3:54Speaker 1: here a big market, small market matchup, of course, and
- 3:58Speaker 1: the small market team yet again Milwaukee prevailing in a
- 4:02Speaker 1: big way. They have been the Cubs tormentors for quite
- 4:05Speaker 1: some time now and it's just continuing in this series.
- 4:09Speaker 1: So last night, a team that is twenty second in
- 4:12Speaker 1: the majors in home runs, the Brewers hit three homers,
- 4:15Speaker 1: including two three run shots, and that was the difference
- 4:19Speaker 1: in the game. The three run shots by Andrew Vaughan
- 4:22Speaker 1: and Jackson Curio massive home runs. This is not necessarily
- 4:26Speaker 1: what the Brewers do typically. What they did in Game
- 4:29Speaker 1: one was more typical, but here they are. They didn't
- 4:32Speaker 1: even use Quinn Priester in their bullpen game. Yes, that
- 4:35Speaker 1: was a bullpen game in which they prevailed last night.
- 4:38Speaker 1: They had hinted in using Priester, but they preserve him
- 4:41Speaker 1: for Game three and the miss last night, My goodness,
- 4:45Speaker 1: three scoreless innings, hit one hundred and four miles an hour.
- 4:48Speaker 1: He was absolutely brilliant and dominant and electric. It was
- 4:52Speaker 1: also fired up. It was really cool to see. So
- 4:55Speaker 1: the Cubs obviously in deep trouble here. And if your
- 4:59Speaker 1: Cubs fan, I'm sure you're wondering, man, if we only
- 5:01Speaker 1: had Kate Horton, if we only had Justin Steele going
- 5:04Speaker 1: back further, sure that's fair, but the Brewers are without
- 5:08Speaker 1: Brandon Woodruff, and the Cubs just have not matched them
- 5:12Speaker 1: so far in this series. From a starting pitching or
- 5:14Speaker 1: any kind of pitching standpoint, Matt Boyd on three days
- 5:17Speaker 1: rest in Game one. Never a good idea to pitch
- 5:20Speaker 1: a guy on three days rest in the postseason. The
- 5:23Speaker 1: numbers are staggering against it, but the Cubs felt obviously
- 5:26Speaker 1: that was their best option, and then Imanaga in Game two.
- 5:30Speaker 1: He has allowed a ton of home runs lately, thirty
- 5:33Speaker 1: one in the regular season total that is fourth in
- 5:37Speaker 1: the Majors and then even more recently twelve home runs
- 5:40Speaker 1: in his last six starts allowed. Wasn't a shock last
- 5:43Speaker 1: night to see him allow a few more homers. So
- 5:47Speaker 1: the Cubs, I don't know how they're going to figure
- 5:50Speaker 1: this out with the Brewers over time, but here are
- 5:53Speaker 1: the Brewers, and not counting the COVID season, the last
- 5:57Speaker 1: time the Cubs finished ahead of them, the last time
- 6:00Speaker 1: was twenty seventeen. And for the Brewers, if they do
- 6:03Speaker 1: prevail here, and it certainly looks like they will, this
- 6:06Speaker 1: will be a huge thing for them because they have
- 6:10Speaker 1: lost five straight opening round series, four wildcard series, and
- 6:14Speaker 1: division series. They have yet to kind of break through
- 6:18Speaker 1: in this new era of Theirs, this era of Council
- 6:21Speaker 1: and now Crat Murphy. This would be a big thing.
- 6:25Speaker 1: And certainly we've seen them be the best team in
- 6:27Speaker 1: the Majors all season long. It seems to me now
- 6:30Speaker 1: casual fans who might be watching this are seeing why
- 6:34Speaker 1: they do a lot of things really well. Brewers up
- 6:37Speaker 1: to nothing in that series. Now the series I am
- 6:40Speaker 1: on the Yankees and the Blue Jays. We go to
- 6:44Speaker 1: Game three tonight at Yankee Stadium. The Blue Jays have
- 6:47Speaker 1: outscored the Yankees twenty three to eight in this series,
- 6:50Speaker 1: but it has all taken place at Rogers Center, where
- 6:54Speaker 1: the Blue Jays were absolutely electric and brilliant in any
- 6:57Speaker 1: other great adjective you might want to use. In the
- 7:00Speaker 1: first two games. I said this unfair territory yesterday. I'll
- 7:03Speaker 1: say it again today. I do see a pathway for
- 7:06Speaker 1: the Yankees to get back in this series. Obviously, it
- 7:10Speaker 1: starts tonight. Rodin has to beat Shane Bieber, and then
- 7:13Speaker 1: Game four, of the Blue Jays are throwing a bullpen game,
- 7:16Speaker 1: the Yankees will have Cam Schlitzer that would seemingly favor
- 7:19Speaker 1: the Yankees. And then Game five back in the Rogers
- 7:22Speaker 1: Center where the Yankees are one and eight, it would
- 7:24Speaker 1: be freed In Gossman. And who knows how Ya Savage
- 7:27Speaker 1: will be used, if at all, in Games four or five,
- 7:30Speaker 1: coming off his brilliant seventy eight pitch performance on Sunday,
- 7:34Speaker 1: but he is an option at some point four or five.
- 7:38Speaker 1: All hands on deck in a Game five, And yes,
- 7:40Speaker 1: the Yankees would have that Rogers stigma hanging over them
- 7:43Speaker 1: the one and eight record, But at the same time,
- 7:46Speaker 1: when you get to that point, if you get to
- 7:48Speaker 1: that point. Again, all bets are off, You've got a shot,
- 7:52Speaker 1: So we'll see what happens tonight. It is a huge
- 7:55Speaker 1: test for the Yankees, a huge test for Aaron Judge.
- 7:58Speaker 1: As I wrote yesterday, Vladimir Guerrero in two days, in
- 8:03Speaker 1: those games at Rogers Center in two days produced more
- 8:06Speaker 1: electrifying moments in the postseason than I think maybe Aaron
- 8:09Speaker 1: Judge ever has the game one homer in the first
- 8:12Speaker 1: inning for Guerrero, and of course the Grand Slam in
- 8:15Speaker 1: Game two that turned a five to nothing lead into
- 8:18Speaker 1: a nine nothing lead. So Yankees obviously in trouble here,
- 8:23Speaker 1: but again they're coming home as opposed to the Phillies,
- 8:26Speaker 1: and that gives them something of at least a chance.
- 8:30Speaker 1: I would say. The other series, the final series we
- 8:33Speaker 1: should discuss here, Mariners and Tigers. This has been an
- 8:36Speaker 1: interesting series, low scoring, both games decided by scores of
- 8:40Speaker 1: three to two. The Mariners finally win a postseason game
- 8:44Speaker 1: at home for the first time since two thousand and one.
- 8:46Speaker 1: They do that in Game two, a game that the
- 8:49Speaker 1: Tigers had tied up late and easily could have won.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Didn't work out that way. So now it goes back
- 8:55Speaker 1: to Detroit, and we'll see what happens here. I am
- 8:59Speaker 1: not convinced one way or the other that either of
- 9:01Speaker 1: these teams is going to dominate in the next two games. Tonight,
- 9:05Speaker 1: we have Logan Gilbert seemingly with a pitching advantage over
- 9:08Speaker 1: Jack Flaherty, who has been at times brilliant and at
- 9:12Speaker 1: times inconsistent. So this is a series that it seems
- 9:17Speaker 1: like it's gonna go more longer than some of the others.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Certainly when you're tied one to one, that would be
- 9:22Speaker 1: the obvious conclusion. Ken, But with schoolble looming still and
- 9:27Speaker 1: with the Mariners pitching being what it is, I would
- 9:29Speaker 1: expect low scoring games to continue, assuming Flowerty tonight is
- 9:34Speaker 1: going to be the Jack Flaherty we saw at times
- 9:38Speaker 1: in last year's postseason, at times during the regular season,
- 9:42Speaker 1: but not always in either case. All right, we'll be
- 9:45Speaker 1: right back after this with the inside dish FT fam.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Let's talk about Superpower. Eric Kratz is a proud Superpower customer,
- 9:55Speaker 2: and he's gonna give us more of the personal experience.
- 9:57Speaker 2: But I'll just start it with this. You ever go
- 9:59Speaker 2: to the doctor in the docs, just like, oh, drink
- 10:01Speaker 2: more water? Are you looking for more data, more of
- 10:03Speaker 2: a game plan. Superpower does that for you. They give
- 10:07Speaker 2: you the experience that athletes get with teams.
- 10:12Speaker 1: LA.
- 10:12Speaker 3: The lab results came back for me. Now it's streamlines
- 10:16Speaker 3: everything that I kind of had an idea of, but
- 10:19Speaker 3: now it really lets me focus on the things that
- 10:22Speaker 3: I'm deficient in, the things that I'm that I that
- 10:25Speaker 3: I have good, good lab test results from, and I
- 10:29Speaker 3: could go in that direction.
- 10:30Speaker 2: I want to go nutritional guidance, supplement suggestions, you name it.
- 10:34Speaker 2: There's so much more info to check out at superpower
- 10:37Speaker 2: dot com and you can lock in the special one
- 10:39Speaker 2: hundred ninety nine dollars price while at lasts after you
- 10:42Speaker 2: sign up, they're gonna ask you how you heard about them?
- 10:43Speaker 2: Mentioned ft to support the show, Your biology decoded, your
- 10:48Speaker 2: blueprint activated with Superpower?
- 10:51Speaker 1: Well well, well, time out for the inside. I dished
- 11:00Speaker 1: the part of the show where I talk about maybe
- 11:02Speaker 1: a story I've written, maybe a trend in the game,
- 11:04Speaker 1: maybe something else entirely, And today I want to talk
- 11:07Speaker 1: about one of the favorite things that I do in
- 11:10Speaker 1: the television part of my job when I work for
- 11:12Speaker 1: Fox Sports, and that is interviewing parents. And I believe
- 11:16Speaker 1: i've mentioned this before on the show, but I just
- 11:19Speaker 1: take such enjoyment out of it, because really, every time
- 11:22Speaker 1: you do it, it's in a successful situation for the
- 11:24Speaker 1: player and the parents. Most often in major league debuts
- 11:27Speaker 1: is when this happens, they are routinely overjoyed. So on Sunday,
- 11:33Speaker 1: in Game two, after you Savage pitched five and a
- 11:35Speaker 1: third scoreless innings with eleven strikeouts, hitless innings, I interviewed
- 11:41Speaker 1: his parents, Dave and Cheryl, up in the stands in
- 11:44Speaker 1: Rogers Center, and I just kind of want to share
- 11:46Speaker 1: with you guys how this came about, because this one
- 11:48Speaker 1: was a little bit different. So again, I've been doing
- 11:52Speaker 1: this a long time now. This is my twentieth year
- 11:54Speaker 1: at Fox. I remember Daniel Nava, Nava coming up in
- 11:58Speaker 1: twenty ten for the Red Sox, first pitch Grand Slam
- 12:01Speaker 1: in his first Major league at bat, interviewing his parents.
- 12:04Speaker 1: I remember Cole Tucker when he came up for the
- 12:06Speaker 1: Pirates in twenty nineteen, hit a home run and interviewed
- 12:10Speaker 1: his parents. That was cool. Twenty twenty two NLCS the
- 12:13Speaker 1: Nola Showdown between Austin Nola of the Padres Aaron Nola
- 12:18Speaker 1: of the Phillies interviewed their parents in the stands. All
- 12:21Speaker 1: these things are great. Never interviewed a parent in a
- 12:24Speaker 1: postseason game when their son is coming off the performance
- 12:29Speaker 1: that trey Y Savage did. And actually, initially this interview
- 12:34Speaker 1: was not going to happen. The morning of the game,
- 12:37Speaker 1: I contacted the Blue Jays and said, hey, if you
- 12:40Speaker 1: Savage pitch as well, I would like to interview the parents.
- 12:43Speaker 1: What do you think Can you tell me the seat
- 12:45Speaker 1: locations and we'll go from there. And the Jays replied,
- 12:49Speaker 1: you know what, this is something where we want to
- 12:51Speaker 1: ask the player first, and we do not want to
- 12:54Speaker 1: talk to you Savage on the day of his start.
- 12:56Speaker 1: The next time, if you just let us know a
- 12:58Speaker 1: day in advance, we'll talk to him and we'll see
- 13:01Speaker 1: what happens. That answer frustrated me. I will lie At
- 13:05Speaker 1: the same time, I did understand it. Now you might say, well,
- 13:09Speaker 1: what's the big deal about asking a player if a
- 13:11Speaker 1: reporter can talk to his parents, But starting pitchers generally
- 13:16Speaker 1: are left alone the day of their starts. And Treya
- 13:19Speaker 1: Savage was making his fourth major league start, So I
- 13:23Speaker 1: can understand where the Blue Jays were coming from, and
- 13:26Speaker 1: I can even understand why they would want his approval,
- 13:29Speaker 1: because not all players would be comfortable with their parents
- 13:33Speaker 1: being interviewed. And I could speak for myself here. My
- 13:35Speaker 1: dad has passed away, but if he was ever interviewed
- 13:38Speaker 1: about me, I would not have been happy about it.
- 13:40Speaker 1: He would have taken things, probably in directions that I
- 13:43Speaker 1: would not have been comfortable with. So I understood the
- 13:46Speaker 1: whole thing. But then the game is progressing. The Blue
- 13:49Speaker 1: Jays go up nine to nothing, they go up eleven nothing,
- 13:51Speaker 1: they go up twelve nothing, and I text an official
- 13:54Speaker 1: from MLB who was working the series and on the
- 13:57Speaker 1: broadcast sides. He's a sign to really organizing the broadcast
- 14:01Speaker 1: interviews and different things, and I said, hey, it would
- 14:03Speaker 1: be nice if we can interview Trey Savage's parents, don't
- 14:06Speaker 1: you think And he agreed, and he said, you know what,
- 14:09Speaker 1: let me ask the Blue Jays and we'll see what
- 14:12Speaker 1: they say. And the Blue Jays said, you know what, Okay.
- 14:15Speaker 1: They allowed that MLB official to approach the parents in
- 14:18Speaker 1: the stands ask their permission if I could come up
- 14:21Speaker 1: there and interview them, and everything from there proceeded. The
- 14:25Speaker 1: MLB official texted me back and said, we're good, go
- 14:28Speaker 1: ahead up there. I did that, and I had a
- 14:31Speaker 1: stage manager, a person down on the field with me
- 14:33Speaker 1: who knew the ballpark better than I did, got me
- 14:36Speaker 1: to the seats and you saw what happened if you
- 14:39Speaker 1: were still watching by that point. Dave and Cheryl were great.
- 14:42Speaker 1: And what was unusual about this interview different than some
- 14:45Speaker 1: of the others. Usually it's conducted with the parents sitting
- 14:48Speaker 1: down because the games are I don't know, close, and
- 14:51Speaker 1: people are watching and they don't want to be standing
- 14:54Speaker 1: up and blocking the view of others. But in this case, Dave,
- 14:57Speaker 1: you Savage Tray's dad said, you know what, I want
- 15:00Speaker 1: everybody up behind me, because there were family members, a
- 15:03Speaker 1: lot of family members, it seemed like, behind him, and
- 15:06Speaker 1: other people maybe from other Blue Days families as well.
- 15:09Speaker 1: So everybody stood. Dave stood, Cheryl stood, brother Cole stood.
- 15:13Speaker 1: He's in college right now, but he was up. They
- 15:15Speaker 1: had driven up from Pennsylvania for this, and you could
- 15:19Speaker 1: see the excitement of the parents. Hear the excitement of
- 15:22Speaker 1: the parents. They gave great answers to the questions. They
- 15:24Speaker 1: were regular people, as almost all baseball player parents are,
- 15:29Speaker 1: and it was just a fun interview. So it was
- 15:32Speaker 1: the kind of thing that kind of makes my job
- 15:35Speaker 1: even more fulfilling. It's always fulfilling, it's always great. But again,
- 15:40Speaker 1: that is maybe the favorite thing that I do, interviewing
- 15:42Speaker 1: parents in joyous moments like that. And when you have
- 15:45Speaker 1: parents who were as down home and as cool as
- 15:49Speaker 1: Dave and Cheryl were, well, it doesn't get any better
- 15:52Speaker 1: than that. So that was it. That was the story
- 15:55Speaker 1: behind that interview. I want to thank, obviously Dave and
- 15:58Speaker 1: Cheryl for being so accommodating with their time and being
- 16:01Speaker 1: willing to do it. I also want to thank the
- 16:03Speaker 1: Blue Jays for ultimately deviating from their policy, I guess
- 16:07Speaker 1: you would say, And I want to thank the MLB
- 16:09Speaker 1: official who helped as well. Worked out great, and who knows,
- 16:13Speaker 1: maybe we'll have another moment like that later in the series.
- 16:15Speaker 1: Maybe Cam Schlitzler's parents will be the next ones that
- 16:18Speaker 1: we interview. But he's already, I don't know, pretty accomplished
- 16:22Speaker 1: for a major league pitcher. Anyway. That is the inside dish.
- 16:25Speaker 1: We'll be back with grilling Kin right after this. Ft FAM.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Another reason why you should love Arena Club is the
- 16:32Speaker 2: grading system. So you recently pulled a slap pack and
- 16:36Speaker 2: then you said, hey, it's not great. Great it for me.
- 16:39Speaker 2: They gave you an eight point five out of ten
- 16:40Speaker 2: on your Auto whitey Ford card, and then they show
- 16:43Speaker 2: you all the details of the grading system. It's very
- 16:46Speaker 2: interactive within the app, and then you're done. If you
- 16:49Speaker 2: want to sell the card or you want to know
- 16:50Speaker 2: what it's worth, you've got it.
- 16:52Speaker 4: It's like getting taken a school on cards. And I
- 16:54Speaker 4: think that's the coolest part of it. If you're young
- 16:56Speaker 4: or old, you understand, hey, this is how it gets
- 16:58Speaker 4: deciphered all the way through, shows you the numbers and
- 17:01Speaker 4: how they went through it. I think that's the coolest
- 17:03Speaker 4: part about this whole thing. And then you can keep it,
- 17:05Speaker 4: traded or sell it or whatever you want.
- 17:06Speaker 2: And it's so much more efficient to do this through
- 17:11Speaker 2: Arena Club. Whether you're ripping a pack, there's the slab packs,
- 17:13Speaker 2: buying a card, selling a card, grading a card, it's
- 17:16Speaker 2: all there for you. We talk about it all season long.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Arena club dot com slash foul is where you can
- 17:22Speaker 2: go to give it a shot. Twenty percent off your
- 17:23Speaker 2: first card purchase. Arenaclub dot com slash foul. Use the
- 17:26Speaker 2: code foul at checkout and get twenty percent off.
- 17:36Speaker 1: All right, we're back. We'll get to grilling Can in
- 17:38Speaker 1: one second, But first I want to address the ongoing
- 17:42Speaker 1: situation regarding the managerial merry go round. Rick Groley wrote
- 17:46Speaker 1: about it today for The Athletic and brid of course
- 17:49Speaker 1: did an outstanding job as always. It's a very interesting
- 17:53Speaker 1: situation because there are so many jobs open. We've seen
- 17:56Speaker 1: the Texas Rangers fill their position as expected with Skips Drumacher,
- 18:01Speaker 1: and now it remains to be seen just where these
- 18:04Speaker 1: other ones are going to go. We've got three interims
- 18:07Speaker 1: still to be decided Colorado. I would expect that to
- 18:10Speaker 1: be a change because a new general manager is coming
- 18:12Speaker 1: in to replace Bill Schmidt. Washington still has to decide
- 18:16Speaker 1: on Miguel Cairo. Baltimore still has to decide on Tony Mansolino.
- 18:21Speaker 1: I wrote last week about David Ross and his interest
- 18:24Speaker 1: in becoming a manager again. And there are two jobs
- 18:28Speaker 1: in particular that I think are the most appealing, and
- 18:31Speaker 1: maybe three the most appealing right now. The ones open
- 18:35Speaker 1: is Atlanta. I don't know that there's any question about that.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Most everyone in the game expects the Braves to be
- 18:40Speaker 1: back and back in a big way next season. They're
- 18:44Speaker 1: going to do some things in the offseason, and they're
- 18:46Speaker 1: also going to be healthier than they were, so I
- 18:49Speaker 1: would expect that job to be one that is highly contested.
- 18:53Speaker 1: I don't know and have no feel really for which
- 18:56Speaker 1: way Alex Anthopolis wants to go. What Weiss is certainly
- 19:00Speaker 1: someone who has managed before. He was on Brian Snicker's staff,
- 19:03Speaker 1: but I don't know that they want to have that
- 19:06Speaker 1: kind of continuity. They might want to change, and Anthopolis
- 19:09Speaker 1: has not hired a manager in Atlanta. He's had Snicker
- 19:12Speaker 1: the whole time, so he's going to probably want his
- 19:15Speaker 1: own guy with his own stamp. That would be my expectation.
- 19:19Speaker 1: Baltimore is another interesting job, and the Orioles, yes, they
- 19:23Speaker 1: have work to do this offseason. They have to reconstruct
- 19:26Speaker 1: virtually their entire bullpen, and more than anything, they need
- 19:30Speaker 1: to find the top of the rotation starter that they
- 19:32Speaker 1: didn't get last year. It turns out that Trevor Rodgers
- 19:36Speaker 1: kind of emerged as that guy in the second half
- 19:38Speaker 1: of the season, and Kyle Bradish is coming back, So
- 19:41Speaker 1: you've got two top of the rotation types kind of
- 19:44Speaker 1: in place, but at the same time they need one
- 19:47Speaker 1: more so that's another interesting job San Francisco as well.
- 19:51Speaker 1: The Giants have some holes to fill. They've got to
- 19:54Speaker 1: get better in a number of different areas. But it
- 19:57Speaker 1: seems like Nick Huntley, the former catcher, is favored for
- 20:00Speaker 1: that job. And that job two is appealing because Buster Posey,
- 20:04Speaker 1: as President Baseball Operations is going to want to win.
- 20:07Speaker 1: So we're gonna see how this all plays out in
- 20:10Speaker 1: the next few weeks. I do expect maybe even more movement,
- 20:15Speaker 1: especially if the Phillies go out, because then the question
- 20:17Speaker 1: of Rob Thompson would come up. And I know Yankee
- 20:20Speaker 1: fans are waiting, well, if we get swept, what about
- 20:22Speaker 1: Aaron Boone. I don't see it. I don't see it
- 20:25Speaker 1: because of the way this is happening. It's not Aaron
- 20:27Speaker 1: Boone's fault that his team is getting pounded here. It
- 20:30Speaker 1: just happens to be that they've run into a hot club.
- 20:32Speaker 1: But we shall see in the days and weeks ahead.
- 20:36Speaker 1: All right, with that, let's get to grill and can
- 20:41Speaker 1: first question comes from Richard Proctor, who asks what are
- 20:43Speaker 1: the chances of any expansion news this offseason? That, Richard,
- 20:48Speaker 1: actually is a really good question, and I don't know
- 20:50Speaker 1: the answer to it. So Rob Manfren's position as commissioner
- 20:54Speaker 1: has been the whole time, Wait till Tampa Bay and Sacramento,
- 20:59Speaker 1: it turns out, now gets resolved, Wait till the two franchises,
- 21:02Speaker 1: the A's and the Rays have their stadium issues all set.
- 21:05Speaker 1: They're not quite there yet, so I would not expect
- 21:08Speaker 1: an announcement this off season. Yes, the A's have a
- 21:10Speaker 1: plan they're going to Las Vegas. Construction is underway. The
- 21:14Speaker 1: Rays have new ownership, but they yet or they do
- 21:18Speaker 1: not yet have a stadium plan in place. So once
- 21:20Speaker 1: that happens, and I do expect it to happen in
- 21:23Speaker 1: relatively short order, then at that point I would expect
- 21:27Speaker 1: Manford to proceed, But not before that, and maybe not
- 21:31Speaker 1: before the next round of the labor negotiations because that's
- 21:33Speaker 1: going to take precedence, and the next agreement does not
- 21:36Speaker 1: expire until December one, twenty twenty six. So there's your
- 21:40Speaker 1: non answer, but I would not expect it to be
- 21:43Speaker 1: this offseason. All right, next question here, This one comes
- 21:47Speaker 1: from Bernie Suarez. Us Is Dave Roberts going to finally
- 21:50Speaker 1: give in and say Sasaki is the closer in this case?
- 21:55Speaker 1: Bernie I would say it really doesn't matter. Actions will
- 22:00Speaker 1: speak louder than words, and at some point we're going
- 22:02Speaker 1: to see Roki Sasaki continue on the way he is
- 22:06Speaker 1: right now as the closer. That's what he is. He
- 22:09Speaker 1: came in last night and closed, even though he wasn't
- 22:11Speaker 1: the initial choice. So yes, perhaps Dave Roberts says it
- 22:17Speaker 1: today on the off day, Perhaps he says it going
- 22:20Speaker 1: into the next game. Perhaps he doesn't say it at
- 22:21Speaker 1: all but just keeps using Sasaki that way. What matters
- 22:25Speaker 1: is that usage, how he actually goes about the late innings,
- 22:30Speaker 1: And I would expect from here on out we're going
- 22:32Speaker 1: to see a whole lot of Rokie Susaki closing. All right,
- 22:35Speaker 1: we've got time for one more. I believe, Okay, is
- 22:39Speaker 1: Woodriff going to return for the NLCS? This comes from Drew.
- 22:43Speaker 1: I would not expect that. I have not heard much
- 22:47Speaker 1: on him lately, but my understanding was that he was
- 22:50Speaker 1: problematic for the rest of the postseason. Now not on
- 22:52Speaker 1: that series, and I might not have the freshest updated information,
- 22:56Speaker 1: but I would be surprised if Brandon Woodriff came back
- 23:00Speaker 1: and to shift the conversation a little bit to another injury.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Bobaschet I was asked about him on FT yesterday and
- 23:07Speaker 1: I said, I don't see him coming back for potential
- 23:09Speaker 1: alcs because he's still is limping. When I see him
- 23:12Speaker 1: in the dugout during the games, he's not moving all
- 23:15Speaker 1: that well. So these questions obviously will be answered as
- 23:19Speaker 1: we move forward here. But we will see if we
- 23:22Speaker 1: see either of these guys again in the postseason. All right,
- 23:26Speaker 1: one more question or no, let's see, yes, one more?
- 23:30Speaker 1: Can we put the postseason format criticisms to bed? From
- 23:34Speaker 1: foul territory? This comes well, yes, at least in this case.
- 23:38Speaker 1: The two teams with the bys actually yeah, two teams
- 23:42Speaker 1: with the byes, the Blue Jays and the Brewers have
- 23:46Speaker 1: played exceedingly well coming out of those breaks. The Mariners
- 23:48Speaker 1: have done okay, The Phillies have not, but they've run
- 23:52Speaker 1: into a better club. So I don't know that we
- 23:55Speaker 1: can put it to bed. Each team reacts in a
- 23:57Speaker 1: different way to that layoff. But with the Blue Jays,
- 24:00Speaker 1: Guerrero has talked quite a bit about this. He's benefited
- 24:04Speaker 1: from the rest. Other players have as well. The Brewers
- 24:07Speaker 1: perhaps were a bigger surprise in that obviously all players
- 24:11Speaker 1: need rest, but with the style that they play, weren't
- 24:13Speaker 1: sure they could turn it back on again. Yes, they
- 24:16Speaker 1: have turned it back on again. So really, at this point,
- 24:20Speaker 1: at least looking at this postseason small sample size of
- 24:24Speaker 1: that teams seem to have figured out how to rebound
- 24:27Speaker 1: from five days off and in some cases clearly it
- 24:30Speaker 1: has benefited them. All Right, that is it for today's show.
- 24:34Speaker 1: We will be back maybe Thursday, maybe Friday, not exactly
- 24:38Speaker 1: sure yet, depends on the postseason schedule that show. The
- 24:42Speaker 1: next one will be with Alana Rizzo in all of
- 24:44Speaker 1: our usual places, YouTube, Apple, Spotify. Have a great week, everyone,
