- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday the 4th of
- 0:16December and I'm so grateful that you have invited me into
- 0:20your day so that you and I can take this moment and continue
- 0:24reading this awesome book of Daniel.
- 0:27And today the story continues. And you have probably heard the
- 0:32story from when you were little, and when you were little, the
- 0:36message was very simple. The message was God is in
- 0:39control and you need to honour God.
- 0:42But I think we're probably a bit beyond that now.
- 0:44And we can listen for a bit of nuance.
- 0:46We can listen to how often we find ourselves in these really
- 0:51powerless situations and we feel as though there's no opportunity
- 0:55for us to have any agency. But still God is suffering and
- 1:00still God offers us a way that we can be faithful to him and he
- 1:06can care for us. So Holy Spirit, as we hear your
- 1:10word today, open our hearts and our minds that we can really
- 1:15understand your truth shared with us, our friends.
- 1:22And as well as all that, they are just bangers of stories.
- 1:25So let's enjoy them as we read together Daniel chapter 3.
- 1:38King Nebuchadnezzar made a gold statue 90 feet tall and 9 feet
- 1:44wide and set it up on the plain of Jura in the province of
- 1:48Babylon. Then he sent messages to the
- 1:50high offices, officials, governors, advisers, treasurers,
- 1:54judges, magistrates and all the provincial officials to come to
- 1:59the dedication of the statue he had set up.
- 2:02So all these officials came and stood before the statue King
- 2:06Nebuchadnezzar had set up. Then herald shouted out people
- 2:11of all races and nations and languages.
- 2:14Listen to the King's command when you hear the sound of the
- 2:18horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes, and other musical
- 2:22instruments bowed to the ground to worship King Nebuchadnezzar's
- 2:27gold statue. Anyone who refuses to obey will
- 2:31immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace.
- 2:36So at the sound of the musical instruments, all the people,
- 2:40whatever their race or nation or language, bowed to the ground
- 2:44and worshipped the gold statue that King Nebuchadnezzar had set
- 2:47up. But some of the astrologers went
- 2:50to the king and informed on the Jews.
- 2:53They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, Long live the
- 2:56king. You issued A decree requiring
- 2:59all the people to bow down and worship the gold statue when
- 3:03they hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp,
- 3:07pipes, and other musical instruments.
- 3:10That decree also states that those who refuse to obey must be
- 3:13thrown into a blazing furnace. But there are some Jews,
- 3:18Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, whom you have put in charge of
- 3:22the province of Babylon. They pay no attention to you,
- 3:26your Majesty. They refuse to serve your gods
- 3:29and do not worship the gold statue you have set up.
- 3:32Then Nebuchadnezzar flew into a rage and ordered that Shadrach,
- 3:37Meshach, and Abednego be brought before him.
- 3:40When they were brought in, Nebuchadnezzar said to them, Is
- 3:44it true, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you refuse to
- 3:48serve my gods or to worship the gold statue I have set up?
- 3:53I will give you one more chance to bow down and worship the
- 3:56statue I have made when you hear the sound of the musical
- 4:00instruments. But if you refuse, you will be
- 4:03thrown immediately into the blazing furnace, and then what
- 4:08God will be able to rescue you from my power?
- 4:12Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied.
- 4:15O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you.
- 4:21If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we
- 4:24serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your
- 4:28power, Your Majesty. But even if he doesn't, we want
- 4:32to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never
- 4:36serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.
- 4:41Nebuchadnezzar was so furious with Shadrach, Meshach, and
- 4:45Abednego that his face became distorted with rage.
- 4:50He commanded that the furnace be heated 7 times hotter than
- 4:53usual. Then he ordered some of the
- 4:55strongest men of his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and
- 4:59Abednego and throw them into the blazing furnace.
- 5:03So they tied them up and threw them into the furnace, fully
- 5:07dressed in their pants, turbans, robes, and other garments.
- 5:11And because the king in his anger had demanded such a hot
- 5:14fire in the furnace, the flames killed the soldiers as they
- 5:18threw the three men in. Sir Shadrach, Meshach, and
- 5:22Abednego, securely tied, fell into the roaring flames.
- 5:29But suddenly Nebuchadnezzar jumped up in amazement and
- 5:33exclaimed to his advisers. Didn't we tie up three men and
- 5:38throw them into the furnace? Yes, your majesty, we certainly
- 5:42did, they replied. Look, Nebuchadnezzar shouted.
- 5:46I see four men unbound walking around in the fire, unharmed,
- 5:53and the fourth looks like a God. Then Nebuchadnezzar came as
- 5:58close as he could to the door of the flaming furnace and shouted.
- 6:02Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God,
- 6:08come out. Come here.
- 6:10So Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stepped out of the
- 6:14fire. Then the high officers,
- 6:17officials, governors, and advisers crowded around them and
- 6:22saw that the fire had not touched them, Not a hair on
- 6:25their heads was singed, and their clothing was not scorched.
- 6:30They didn't even smell of smoke. Then Nebuchadnezzar said.
- 6:34Praise the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
- 6:39He sent his Angel to rescue his servants who trusted in him.
- 6:43They defied the King's command and were willing to die rather
- 6:47than serve or worship any God except their own God.
- 6:52Therefore, I make this decree, if any people, whatever their
- 6:57race or nation or language, speak a word against the God of
- 7:03Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, they will be torn, live from
- 7:06limb, and their houses will be turned into heaps of rubble.
- 7:10There is no God who can rescue like this.
- 7:14Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego to even
- 7:19higher positions in the province of Babylon.
- 7:32Our Lord, I wonder in our lives what are the gold statues that
- 7:36the world is telling us to bow down and worship of?
- 7:40Lord, whatever those things are in our lives, be it careers, be
- 7:45it friendship, be it our own success, be it sporting
- 7:51achievement or competition of any kind, be it comfort, be it
- 7:56hedonism, be it whatever it is, Lord, that we are told or
- 8:01tempted to place higher than you.
- 8:04But I pray that it would bear down before You, for even a 90
- 8:11foot gold statue would be comically dwarfed beside you,
- 8:17the universe creating God who we worship.
- 8:23But Lord, that's going to be tricky for us to do on our own.
- 8:25So we need Your help. Transform our hearts away from
- 8:30the adulterous hearts that our sinful nature has placed in our
- 8:34chests. And may they be Your hearts
- 8:38transformed, purified by fire, like Shadrach, Meshach and
- 8:44Abednego were proven to be holy and faithful to you.
- 8:48May we too, we love you. And we are so grateful for all
- 8:54that you do for us, for the daily provisions, but more
- 9:00importantly, your endless patience and work transforming
- 9:05us. Oh, we are so grateful.
- 9:07Here we are. Your unfinished projects
- 9:09continue your work on us. They pray all of this in your
- 9:13precious name, Jesus, Amen.
