- 0:06Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory
- 0:11Speaker 1: Jim Hayes alongside Matt Holliday and Lance Lynn. And quick
- 0:16Speaker 1: reminder before we get into it that if you like
- 0:19Speaker 1: Cardinal Territory, go ahead and hit the subscribe button. See
- 0:23Speaker 1: they told us get to five thousand. We did that,
- 0:25Speaker 1: blue past it. Now they want us to get to
- 0:27Speaker 1: seven thousand. So pleased, if you don't mind, go ahead
- 0:31Speaker 1: and hit the subscribe button. Now, Matt, we had don
- 0:37Speaker 1: Lance and I an emergency edition of Cardinal Territory to
- 0:41Speaker 1: discuss the Donovan trade just to recap okay, Donovan goes
- 0:47Speaker 1: to Seattle three way deal with Seattle and Tampa. The
- 0:50Speaker 1: Cards get a couple of prospects from Seattle top one
- 0:54Speaker 1: hundred prospect pitcher Jerangelo Sanja, a former first round pick,
- 0:59Speaker 1: also Typete outfielder and former first round pick, and another
- 1:03Speaker 1: prospect and two count picks from Tampa, all for Brendan Donovan.
- 1:09Speaker 1: So that just when you heard the trade and you
- 1:11Speaker 1: found out the pieces involved, what was your reaction?
- 1:16Speaker 2: Well, I think the it looks like a pretty good
- 1:20Speaker 2: haul to me. I mean I think he got, you know,
- 1:22Speaker 2: three first round picks and two comp picks. So basically,
- 1:28Speaker 2: you know, I think I've seen the switch pitcher. Uh,
- 1:32Speaker 2: he's Jackson's age. I've actually seen him, uh, you know
- 1:35Speaker 2: out on the tour of summer tour of I remember
- 1:40Speaker 2: the first time I saw him, and I was pretty
- 1:42Speaker 2: amazed to the fact that he could he could throw
- 1:44Speaker 2: that hard from both sides.
- 1:46Speaker 3: So essentially you could act like you got two players.
- 1:49Speaker 2: He could be two pictures that they got for him.
- 1:53Speaker 3: So that'll be interesting.
- 1:55Speaker 2: I think for fans to follow a guy that that obviously, Uh,
- 1:59Speaker 2: I think he throws harder right handed, if i'm if
- 2:01Speaker 2: I'm I remember correctly, I think he's more in the
- 2:05Speaker 2: mid nineties right handed and and low nineties left handed.
- 2:08Speaker 2: I could be wrong. I don't know much about ty Pete.
- 2:12Speaker 2: I know he's a good athlete or the other kid. Look,
- 2:16Speaker 2: it's it's uh, you're trying to get the most you can, Donovan.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Uh.
- 2:22Speaker 2: You know, I think you know five essentially five players,
- 2:28Speaker 2: so we'll just see what they turned into.
- 2:30Speaker 4: Uh.
- 2:30Speaker 2: You know, I think this is we talk about like
- 2:33Speaker 2: a guy like Loon Soto trade with the Nationals. You know,
- 2:36Speaker 2: they got a bunch of guys from the Padres in
- 2:38Speaker 2: that deal, and some have worked out really really well.
- 2:41Speaker 2: I mean they got James Wood and and uh I.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Think C J.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Abrams and that deal.
- 2:46Speaker 2: So this is one of those trades that you'll probably
- 2:49Speaker 2: know more about it in two years, two years from now,
- 2:53Speaker 2: of whether it turns out to be a good deal.
- 2:56Speaker 2: But I'm interested to see kind of moving forward or uh,
- 3:00Speaker 2: now that the payroll is is under one hundred and uh,
- 3:06Speaker 2: you know what what is the plan? I mean, I
- 3:08Speaker 2: I clearly is a rebuild. Are they gonna trade Jojo?
- 3:12Speaker 2: I think you're gonna talk about that another guy making
- 3:14Speaker 2: a couple of million bucks. You start talking about a
- 3:17Speaker 2: payroll on the bottom half of the league. So you're
- 3:22Speaker 2: building up the minor league system. I guess the prospects
- 3:24Speaker 2: and and younger players that are you know, kind of
- 3:27Speaker 2: major league ready with a couple of the pictures from
- 3:28Speaker 2: the Red Sox. So all in all, it looks like,
- 3:34Speaker 2: you know, you bring the payroll down. Now you know
- 3:37Speaker 2: what's the plan moving forward? You know, are you are
- 3:40Speaker 2: you going to wait a year or two to jump
- 3:42Speaker 2: back into the free agent market? Where where where is
- 3:45Speaker 2: the the revenue or where is the money gonna go?
- 3:48Speaker 2: Or or how how do you plan on getting the
- 3:50Speaker 2: seed back to World Series caliber team? Because right now,
- 3:54Speaker 2: when you look at it, you keep trading your best players,
- 4:01Speaker 2: you're not gonna compete, and you know it is for
- 4:04Speaker 2: a playoff spot. I know that Kyle Gibson somehow thinks
- 4:06Speaker 2: that even though they keep trading all their best players,
- 4:10Speaker 2: that there's a there's a path to the World Series.
- 4:13Speaker 3: I don't see it. And I appreciate Kyle's.
- 4:18Speaker 2: You know, his his optimism, and I appreciate Lance telling
- 4:21Speaker 2: the truth. Uh so, I I I'm much interested to
- 4:30Speaker 2: see where it goes. Like I said, I mean, obviously
- 4:32Speaker 2: we're covering the Cardinals. We played for the Cardinals, We
- 4:34Speaker 2: love the Cardinals. But right now, like I you know,
- 4:37Speaker 2: I looked up the payroll, you're gonna be under under
- 4:39Speaker 2: a hundred million, and I don't remember the last time
- 4:41Speaker 2: they were under one hundred million for the payroll, and
- 4:45Speaker 2: a good portion of that payroll is being paid to
- 4:48Speaker 2: players on other teams. And then you don't have anybody
- 4:51Speaker 2: under contract past twenty twenty six. I believe, I think
- 4:55Speaker 2: they have no guarantees on any contracts past twenty six.
- 4:59Speaker 2: For a organization like the Cardinals did not have any
- 5:01Speaker 2: commitment past twenty six paarall under one hundred million, which
- 5:05Speaker 2: is gonna go drastically down next year, you know, based
- 5:08Speaker 2: on you know, some of the guys coming off the books.
- 5:13Speaker 2: What is the next step? And that's to me is
- 5:15Speaker 2: is interesting.
- 5:19Speaker 1: So as for Sandja, heim Blum did say that they
- 5:23Speaker 1: haven't decided what was Seattle Lee were saying he's better
- 5:26Speaker 1: right handed, he does throw better or harder as a
- 5:29Speaker 1: right hander. Lance kind of laid out, I thought, in
- 5:33Speaker 1: interesting detail, it's hard enough to be a picture instead
- 5:36Speaker 1: of being a two way picture. So we'll see how
- 5:39Speaker 1: that shakes out. But Lance, you have said all along
- 5:42Speaker 1: that this was a rebuild, a tear down, and now
- 5:48Speaker 1: we see Donovan gone, and if you look at what
- 5:50Speaker 1: Jim said he was gonna do, he's doing it. So
- 5:54Speaker 1: assess how Heimen has done with the plan that he
- 5:57Speaker 1: put out in place publicly.
- 6:00Speaker 5: Yeah, I think, I mean, originally it was a retool,
- 6:04Speaker 5: or then it was a build. I mean, it's pretty
- 6:07Speaker 5: obvious it's a rebuilt. There's really no other way to
- 6:10Speaker 5: say it. I think you're just waiting for Lars and
- 6:13Speaker 5: Jojo to be sent off. And I think if Lars
- 6:15Speaker 5: didn't have the surgery this offseason, he'd already be gone.
- 6:18Speaker 5: So maybe those are two pieces that you can package
- 6:20Speaker 5: together this year during the trade deadline to uh maybe
- 6:24Speaker 5: get you know, a couple more prospects and go from there.
- 6:29Speaker 5: But yeah, I mean when it started, he had multiple
- 6:32Speaker 5: guys that had no trades that he was kind of
- 6:34Speaker 5: stuck with, right would see, you know, he tried to
- 6:37Speaker 5: do the best he could with that. He got a
- 6:38Speaker 5: couple of big league ready pitchers, had to eat, you know,
- 6:42Speaker 5: a good chunk of money. So hopefully, you know, a
- 6:44Speaker 5: couple of those guys pan out for the money they
- 6:46Speaker 5: paid in the trade to get it down and get
- 6:49Speaker 5: it done. The Donovan trades going to be the main
- 6:53Speaker 5: one that was kind of like, hey, this was my
- 6:56Speaker 5: I kind of did. I didn't have to do this one,
- 6:58Speaker 5: if that makes sense. So we're gonna have to see
- 7:01Speaker 5: how this one pans out, and that's going to be
- 7:03Speaker 5: the big You can't really grade the other trades because
- 7:06Speaker 5: of the no trade. This one is, hey, I did
- 7:10Speaker 5: it because we I thought it was the best for
- 7:13Speaker 5: the organization.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Blah blah blah.
- 7:15Speaker 5: It was not something that had to be done. So
- 7:17Speaker 5: I think that's going to be the grade for him
- 7:20Speaker 5: moving forward. And none of those guys are big league
- 7:23Speaker 5: ready and probably won't be until twenty seven most likely
- 7:28Speaker 5: at the earliest, and the most likely to be the pitcher.
- 7:31Speaker 5: Maybe the college outfielder he kind of grades as a
- 7:35Speaker 5: as a fourth outfielder, platoon type guy. So the center
- 7:40Speaker 5: fielder that what was his name, uh, good athlete, he's
- 7:44Speaker 5: got a chance to be something. I think you know,
- 7:47Speaker 5: the power numbers are coming up.
- 7:48Speaker 4: He's young.
- 7:49Speaker 5: He needs to put the ball in play a little
- 7:51Speaker 5: bit more, you know, because he can run.
- 7:52Speaker 4: And do some things.
- 7:54Speaker 5: So it's a way and see not like the comppicks
- 7:56Speaker 5: they got. It gives them more draft capital. He gives
- 7:59Speaker 5: them more uh you know, uh of the money that
- 8:04Speaker 5: they can use in the draft bonus pool. And then
- 8:06Speaker 5: you can do some things there. So this could be
- 8:09Speaker 5: uh six or seven or or you know, you can
- 8:13Speaker 5: you can do some weird things with this, uh with
- 8:16Speaker 5: this over with with this whole because of the draft
- 8:19Speaker 5: picks that he's got with it, so you can maybe
- 8:21Speaker 5: tie a draft pick to large and Jojo each and
- 8:24Speaker 5: get a higher prospect that you kind of know what
- 8:27Speaker 5: you're getting because you've seen him play in the minor
- 8:29Speaker 5: leagues and stuff like that. So there's a lot of
- 8:30Speaker 5: ways to go here. It wouldn't it didn't have to
- 8:32Speaker 5: be done because Donnie didn't have to be moved or
- 8:35Speaker 5: you know, didn't want to be moved like the guys
- 8:36Speaker 5: with the no trade. So that's gonna be the one
- 8:39Speaker 5: to see where we go in two years to see
- 8:41Speaker 5: how they developed. And it puts a lot of pressure
- 8:42Speaker 5: on their minor league developed system and and all this
- 8:45Speaker 5: stuff too, because they've all they've done is overhaul the
- 8:48Speaker 5: minor leagues, and if none of these guys pan out,
- 8:51Speaker 5: then it's just like we overhauled and didn't have any
- 8:53Speaker 5: plan for any of these guys. So I think it
- 8:55Speaker 5: puts pressure on him to say, hey, we need to
- 8:57Speaker 5: have guys developed rather quickly in the minor leagues, or
- 9:01Speaker 5: we got a bunch of minor leaguers and we didn't
- 9:03Speaker 5: have a plan form when we got them.
- 9:07Speaker 1: That's that's a pretty fair assessment of where things are. Hey,

- 10:56Speaker 1: any sort of danger. Well, what of you guys mentioned earlier?
- 11:00Speaker 1: Jojo Romero we've touched on on a large new park
- 11:04Speaker 1: coming off surgery.
- 11:04Speaker 4: Maybe not the best time to deal him.
- 11:07Speaker 1: But Matt, I'm gonna ask you about Jojo coming off
- 11:10Speaker 1: a career year eight saves U and E or a
- 11:13Speaker 1: really just a tick above two. He was outstanding, his
- 11:16Speaker 1: best year as a big leaguer. Are they better to
- 11:20Speaker 1: hold him or better to deal him? How do you
- 11:22Speaker 1: see this thing unfolded?
- 11:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I think it just goes back to
- 11:27Speaker 2: what the return is, you know, I mean I think
- 11:29Speaker 2: it's you know, I think depends on what people are offering.
- 11:34Speaker 2: I mean, I think sometimes with realievers it's it is
- 11:38Speaker 2: best to strike uh and and and maybe try to
- 11:41Speaker 2: optimize value after coming off of uh, you know, his
- 11:44Speaker 2: best season, because relievers tend to be a little more
- 11:47Speaker 2: volatile with performance. I think, if you're gonna trade him,
- 11:51Speaker 2: you know, or you know, if if if there's value,
- 11:54Speaker 2: if there's teams that want him and they're willing to
- 11:57Speaker 2: offer you know, prospects or you know compis or whatever,
- 12:02Speaker 2: I think you.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Definitely have to listen. We talked about this before.
- 12:05Speaker 2: It doesn't do you any good to have a closer
- 12:09Speaker 2: or a dominant reliever on a team that's not really
- 12:12Speaker 2: trying to win. I mean you may as well, I mean,
- 12:15Speaker 2: whether you win seventy four games or seventy seven games
- 12:20Speaker 2: because you have a good left handed reliever. I think
- 12:23Speaker 2: at this point, if you're not going to win the
- 12:25Speaker 2: you know, if you're not really going for it, it's
- 12:28Speaker 2: best to optimize value on players like him. So I
- 12:32Speaker 2: think I would, you know, I would look to trade
- 12:34Speaker 2: him and get the best deal you can get. And
- 12:39Speaker 2: you know, again we talked about it, like whether you
- 12:43Speaker 2: have him on the team next year or not, it's
- 12:45Speaker 2: not going to move the needle on whether you you
- 12:47Speaker 2: know you somehow make a playoff run coylem. I think so,
- 12:50Speaker 2: But I think Lance and I would would both agree.
- 12:55Speaker 4: So, Lance, I think you said Donnie might have been
- 12:57Speaker 4: the tipping point. Maybe it's Joe, but you said.
- 13:01Speaker 1: If they deal those guys, then we know this is
- 13:04Speaker 1: a gut rehab, right, This is not fixing up the
- 13:08Speaker 1: foyer or or sprucing up a guest bathroom.
- 13:13Speaker 5: Yeah, no, I think Donnie's the Donnie was the start
- 13:16Speaker 5: of the or rebuilding, said us. If if you trade Donnie,
- 13:19Speaker 5: it's a rebuild, you know. Obviously I thought, you know
- 13:21Speaker 5: they might have packaged Judgo with someone else to maybe
- 13:23Speaker 5: get a little bit more in a in a deal.
- 13:27Speaker 5: But like Matt said, relievers their years. They can go
- 13:32Speaker 5: up and down rather quickly. You know, if you trade
- 13:35Speaker 5: him now, they get a full year of him. You know,
- 13:38Speaker 5: whether it's you know, whatever team needs him and all that.
- 13:41Speaker 5: You know, if he has a bad first half, his
- 13:42Speaker 5: value is going to go down. And you kept being
- 13:45Speaker 5: because you're not You're not going to be in it.
- 13:47Speaker 5: You're you're telling everybody you're rebuilding, So why not try
- 13:50Speaker 5: to get as much you can and not risk value
- 13:52Speaker 5: going down. And that being said, you know, you have
- 13:56Speaker 5: these compicts that you just got, you know, maybe you
- 13:59Speaker 5: throw one in there and see if you can get
- 14:00Speaker 5: yourself a top under prospect from somebody. You just never know.
- 14:05Speaker 5: But I would say with reelievers, year and in year out,
- 14:09Speaker 5: you never know what you're gonna get. You never know
- 14:12Speaker 5: when the mileage, you know, catches up in this way
- 14:14Speaker 5: and that way, and he's got one more year. I
- 14:16Speaker 5: think this is the last year are if I'm not mistaken,
- 14:18Speaker 5: So it's I think it's a no doubter. Give a
- 14:20Speaker 5: team a full year of a guy and then you
- 14:23Speaker 5: can try to get the best back as you can
- 14:25Speaker 5: and get a guy that you you know that you're
- 14:28Speaker 5: high on or something like that. And if you want
- 14:30Speaker 5: a better pick or a better guy throwing a throwing
- 14:34Speaker 5: a comp pick where because you don't know what's going
- 14:35Speaker 5: to be there in the draft. You you know what
- 14:37Speaker 5: a guy's done in the minor league so far to
- 14:39Speaker 5: actually see what you can kind of project his future be.
- 14:44Speaker 4: Let's you know, some of these guys, I'm just curious.
- 14:47Speaker 1: I'm sure it's gonna be on a rotating base, especially
- 14:49Speaker 1: early on. But one guy you think would be good
- 14:52Speaker 1: at closing out game crop that's gonna be there beyond
- 14:56Speaker 1: June Chick.
- 14:58Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean you're looking at uh what you got. Uh.
- 15:05Speaker 5: Off the top of my head, I think it's gonna
- 15:07Speaker 5: be more smay whatever. Righty, he kind of came up
- 15:10Speaker 5: last year and and did did some things and then uh, O'Brien.
- 15:17Speaker 5: I think those two are kind of you're would see
- 15:20Speaker 5: right away. And if Lakey doesn't make the rotation or
- 15:23Speaker 5: you don't, you know that all these guys that you
- 15:25Speaker 5: got in the trades and McGreevey and Blante, everybody looks
- 15:29Speaker 5: good in spring training, throw Leahy back there. You know
- 15:33Speaker 5: that that could be a fix. And hell, they're gonna
- 15:36Speaker 5: have nine starters fighting for five spots. Like if one
- 15:40Speaker 5: of those guys stuff plays up in the bullpen and
- 15:43Speaker 5: you got a closer that's one year into the big leagues,
- 15:46Speaker 5: that is very very good thing to have because closers
- 15:50Speaker 5: get expensive quick. And Matt, tell me if I'm wrong here,
- 15:54Speaker 5: you want a three four starter or is this stuff
- 15:55Speaker 5: play up as a back end reliever? You know what
- 15:58Speaker 5: I'm saying. You three four start everywhere? You know, back
- 16:02Speaker 5: in if a guy's stuff plays up in the bullpen
- 16:04Speaker 5: and he's going going to be a four starter going
- 16:06Speaker 5: five innings, six innings, tops, throw him in the back
- 16:10Speaker 5: end of the bullpen and let him go get saved,
- 16:12Speaker 5: like Lady might be an elite closer, but might be
- 16:15Speaker 5: a four starter. Like that's a you just never know,
- 16:17Speaker 5: and that's something they got to figure out on screen train.
- 16:21Speaker 1: One of the things too, that Thymas said, is still
- 16:24Speaker 1: out there right handed bat and do Hard just signed
- 16:29Speaker 1: with the Padres.
- 16:31Speaker 4: He seemed to be a good fit.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Some of the names out there like right handed bat, Hoskins,
- 16:37Speaker 1: power guy, veteran which they could use in the clubhouse,
- 16:41Speaker 1: plays a little outfield, another guy who I think is
- 16:45Speaker 1: still living in Saint Louis's Goldie first base only, and
- 16:49Speaker 1: the Cardinals have guys they want to see at first base,
- 16:51Speaker 1: but a right handed back very good splits, you know
- 16:55Speaker 1: against lefty pitching Matt When you're looking at right handed guys,
- 16:59Speaker 1: who think would fill the bill of guys that are
- 17:02Speaker 1: still out.
- 17:02Speaker 2: There, maybe Yeah, I mean, I think the problem you
- 17:05Speaker 2: have here is the guys that you mentioned are they
- 17:09Speaker 2: I mean, they're they're gonna be later in their career
- 17:12Speaker 2: looking to try to to play on a winning team.
- 17:15Speaker 2: You know, I think obviously if if nothing, if no
- 17:18Speaker 2: contenders are interested, I doubt Goldie, you know, is wanting
- 17:24Speaker 2: to come back and and sort of play on a
- 17:26Speaker 2: on a rebuild. I'm guessing he's looking for a role
- 17:29Speaker 2: on a on a team as a chance to win
- 17:31Speaker 2: the World Series. I mean, we talk about Hoskins, I
- 17:35Speaker 2: mean that that might be somebody that but my guess
- 17:38Speaker 2: is he's probably looking to play on a competitive team
- 17:40Speaker 2: where he gets at bats, you know, Mork and cistently.
- 17:44Speaker 3: I guess I.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Guess the split would be with with first base, maybe
- 17:49Speaker 2: the platoon split that you're looking at with Hoskins and
- 17:52Speaker 2: Goldie with Burlson. But looks like Burlson they want to
- 17:56Speaker 2: play him every day and see see what he looks
- 17:59Speaker 2: like against lefties and not really have a platoon.
- 18:01Speaker 3: So I don't know.
- 18:03Speaker 2: What exactly role other than just to say you have
- 18:06Speaker 2: another right handed bat. Is it a bench role that
- 18:08Speaker 2: just pin shits? Is it a you know, is it
- 18:10Speaker 2: somebody that can play both infield and outfield. I think
- 18:13Speaker 2: Wilmer Flores was on the list, you know, Starling Marte. Uh,
- 18:19Speaker 2: maybe he wants to try to rebuild value again. But again,
- 18:23Speaker 2: if you trade new bar And and you want to,
- 18:26Speaker 2: you know, sign Marte and and see if he can't
- 18:28Speaker 2: rebuild some value and then trade him at the deadline,
- 18:30Speaker 2: or you know, if you want to do something like that,
- 18:34Speaker 2: I could see it.
- 18:35Speaker 3: But when you start talking about bedroom players, most.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Of the time, they're not looking to be platoon players
- 18:40Speaker 2: on on non competitive teams. They want to be platoons
- 18:43Speaker 2: three to platoon. They want a platoon on a on
- 18:45Speaker 2: a team as a chance to win. So I think
- 18:47Speaker 2: it's an interesting, uh situation, unless you're gonna overpay, which
- 18:51Speaker 2: which doesn't really seem to be in the cards for Nice,
- 18:55Speaker 2: in the cards for any of any of the free agents.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Uh.
- 18:58Speaker 2: You know that the Cardinals will looking. I can't see
- 19:01Speaker 2: them overpaying to bring in somebody like Rehee Hoskins just
- 19:05Speaker 2: to add a right handed bat.
- 19:06Speaker 3: So I don't I don't know. I don't know where
- 19:09Speaker 3: this will land, but it'll be interesting.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Let's say something more positive than that, because right now
- 19:18Speaker 1: I'm a little.
- 19:18Speaker 5: Jojo for a person that can hit right handed and
- 19:22Speaker 5: play the outfield. And you know what you're getting. I
- 19:24Speaker 5: mean that that's the kind of the play, and it's
- 19:27Speaker 5: gonna save you money and you don't have to get
- 19:30Speaker 5: a free agency. But if you're gonna go in the
- 19:31Speaker 5: free agency, mold Burley can play left if need be.
- 19:36Speaker 5: If you know, however you want to work it. If
- 19:39Speaker 5: you trade new then Burley can play left. Walker's in right.
- 19:42Speaker 5: Then you can put Herrera at d H and then
- 19:45Speaker 5: you gotta maybe a better back or a better catcher situation,
- 19:48Speaker 5: and you're whoever you go can also DH and play
- 19:51Speaker 5: first base and do the things like that. So there's
- 19:54Speaker 5: a lot of fits there, and then you just got
- 19:56Speaker 5: to kind of see how it is. Flores kind of
- 19:57Speaker 5: fits the bill too. If you look at it right,
- 20:00Speaker 5: second base, third base are probably gonna be predominantly left handed,
- 20:04Speaker 5: first base gonna be predominantly left handed. Wilmer can play
- 20:07Speaker 5: all three of those positions in the infield, So then
- 20:10Speaker 5: Newton left walkers and right victors in center, and that's
- 20:14Speaker 5: kind of your flow. And then you can flow in
- 20:16Speaker 5: Herrera at his DH days because Herrera, in my opinion, Herrera,
- 20:21Speaker 5: if he catches you want to you got to watch
- 20:24Speaker 5: his legs. So if you want him, you gotta be in.
- 20:26Speaker 5: He's gotta be in the lineup every day pretty much.
- 20:29Speaker 5: So how can you get him in the lineup the
- 20:30Speaker 5: most DH three days a week. I think that would
- 20:33Speaker 5: be huge for him, and then mix and match those
- 20:35Speaker 5: days behind the play, especially with day games, you know,
- 20:40Speaker 5: and off days and stuff like that. So I think
- 20:42Speaker 5: Herrera is going to get more DH time than people think.
- 20:46Speaker 1: All right, last thing, and I'll let you guys go
- 20:49Speaker 1: in a more positive direction. One guy outside of JJ
- 20:54Speaker 1: Weatherholt who everyone's excited to see, who I know we
- 20:57Speaker 1: all believe will be on the unopening day roster, will
- 20:59Speaker 1: be a very good play. Outside of that, give me
- 21:02Speaker 1: one guy that you want to see either how he
- 21:05Speaker 1: bounces back or how he takes it to the next
- 21:08Speaker 1: level or maybe makes him win just what he does
- 21:11Speaker 1: when he's got too healthy, kneeds Matt'll start with you.
- 21:14Speaker 1: One guy on the current roster that you're excited to
- 21:17Speaker 1: see in the upcoming season.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Well again, I think you know Jordan Walker is always
- 21:24Speaker 2: the one that's intriguing just because his ceiling is high.
- 21:29Speaker 2: You know, all accounts. I think I heard Mason went
- 21:31Speaker 2: on an MLB network. He was talking about how excited
- 21:35Speaker 2: he was to see some swing change or that he'd
- 21:37Speaker 2: been working really hard, and that he had seen Jordan's
- 21:40Speaker 2: recently swinging and looks really good.
- 21:42Speaker 3: So he's a guy, you know that it has high
- 21:45Speaker 3: end potential, hasn't quite tapped into it just yet.
- 21:52Speaker 2: Still young, but he's one of those guys that that
- 21:56Speaker 2: is an outlier when it comes to strength and and
- 21:59Speaker 2: and and arm strength and some things that he can
- 22:02Speaker 2: do that most guys can't. So he's one of those
- 22:05Speaker 2: guys that, uh, you know two years ago, Uh, he's untradable.
- 22:10Speaker 2: You could get you could have got you know, a
- 22:12Speaker 2: ton four and and just this kind of you know,
- 22:16Speaker 2: still trying to find find it, figure it out. So uh,
- 22:19Speaker 2: I'm interested to see if he can he can take
- 22:21Speaker 2: that next step and and and maybe turn into a
- 22:25Speaker 2: you know, a really good player.
- 22:27Speaker 5: How about you, Lance, I'm gonna go with Gorman off this.
- 22:30Speaker 5: This is what we're thinking, right, You got JJ and
- 22:33Speaker 5: and Win up the middle. It's Gorman and and Walker
- 22:37Speaker 5: that if they take that next step with Herrera behind
- 22:40Speaker 5: the plate and then and then Victor Scott, but it's Gorman.
- 22:44Speaker 5: Their make a break years are for Walker and Gorman
- 22:46Speaker 5: in my opinion, in this sense, but they're still really young.
- 22:49Speaker 5: Gorman's got a chance to be a third baseman, second
- 22:52Speaker 5: baseman that can hit, you know, twenty five home runs
- 22:55Speaker 5: BLUs a year. Everybody needs to realize he's in a
- 22:57Speaker 5: ballpark where if twenty five home runs happen, as Matt knows,
- 23:01Speaker 5: is a really good year, but hit your doubles and
- 23:03Speaker 5: don't strike out. So, from my opinion, if he hits
- 23:07Speaker 5: twenty to twenty five home runs, but next thing you know,
- 23:09Speaker 5: the bad Nevers goes up to two point fifty and
- 23:12Speaker 5: hit some doubles and stuff like that, he becomes a
- 23:15Speaker 5: really good player. Or he can swing like he swings
- 23:18Speaker 5: and become roognant o'door. Or I'm gonna hit thirty every year,
- 23:21Speaker 5: I'm gonna strike out two hundred times and I'm gonna
- 23:23Speaker 5: drive in one hundred. But I'm hitting two hundred, so
- 23:25Speaker 5: I'm not a serviceable player. I think he needs to
- 23:28Speaker 5: wrap his head around of Hey, if I hit less homers,
- 23:30Speaker 5: but my bad nevers goes up, I hit more doubles,
- 23:32Speaker 5: I become more of a productive player instead of just
- 23:34Speaker 5: going for the home run.
- 23:35Speaker 4: At all times.
- 23:36Speaker 5: And I think he's capable of doing that.
- 23:38Speaker 4: But he got in his head that he needed.
- 23:39Speaker 5: To hit thirty, and when you try to hit thirty
- 23:42Speaker 5: in Bush Stadium, your batty never goes down because you
- 23:45Speaker 5: get a lot of fly balls to the track or
- 23:47Speaker 5: a lot of swing and miss trying to try and
- 23:49Speaker 5: to drive the ball a little too much instead of
- 23:52Speaker 5: just go gap to gap, do your thing, and when
- 23:54Speaker 5: the ball goes, it goes. And when you go to Cincinnati,
- 23:57Speaker 5: Milwaukee and Wrigley, you know, have a good weekend the
- 23:59Speaker 5: next time, and you know he goes from twenty five
- 24:01Speaker 5: to twenty nine thirty.
- 24:03Speaker 4: That's what.
- 24:04Speaker 5: That's the way you got to play it. If you
- 24:06Speaker 5: play most of your home games or if you have
- 24:08Speaker 5: half your games at Bush.
- 24:10Speaker 1: I'm gonna go with Mason Win because he played through
- 24:12Speaker 1: a bad knee from Osa last year and.
- 24:14Speaker 5: Masilla Golden Glove, good reach.
- 24:18Speaker 4: What's that?
- 24:19Speaker 5: I'm say, you want to go to Glove and he's
- 24:23Speaker 5: had two good years.
- 24:24Speaker 4: Hold this, but I think he's gonna steal bases.
- 24:27Speaker 1: I think he's gonna hit twenty homers, and I think
- 24:30Speaker 1: he's gonna be more of an impact back. That's why,
- 24:33Speaker 1: because we saw him do all that with a torm meniscus.
- 24:37Speaker 5: I think Jim, I think people expect that at him.
- 24:39Speaker 5: That's like the next step for him. The other guys
- 24:42Speaker 5: are ones that are like, hey, you have to re
- 24:44Speaker 5: establish that you can be a big Leaguer's.
- 24:47Speaker 1: See, but I've said excited to see or see what
- 24:50Speaker 1: they can be.
- 24:51Speaker 5: It's only what Mason win. Then you don't need to
- 24:53Speaker 5: watch baseball.
- 24:55Speaker 1: That's fair enough, all right, but that's that's the beauty
- 24:58Speaker 1: of Cardinal Territory. We give answers and then the former
- 25:02Speaker 1: athletes can beat up on the guy who wasn't. I
- 25:04Speaker 1: appreciate that, gentlemen. Thanks for the insight. Always great talking
- 25:08Speaker 1: to you. That's gonna do it for this edition of
- 25:10Speaker 1: Cardinal Territory. We'll see you next time. Hopefully that episode
- 25:14Speaker 1: won't suck.
