- 0:01Speaker 1: Jeff Langwald is our Broncos insider.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five Pro Football The Insider.
- 0:08Speaker 1: I've covered the league a little while.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Jef Legwall, He's the balloon popper.
- 0:12Speaker 3: He doesn't blow it up.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
- 0:16Speaker 2: IBBW Local sixty eight. Start with the JOm and with
- 0:19Speaker 2: the career. It's Leggy on Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five.
- 0:29Speaker 4: International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight. Start
- 0:34Speaker 4: with the job, end with the career. Jeff joins us
- 0:38Speaker 4: from the construction site. That is happening? How just start here,
- 0:43Speaker 4: Jeff and we get to patter tan in a second.
- 0:46Speaker 4: What's uh, what's going on there? Construction wise? How's how's
- 0:49Speaker 4: this new layout going?
- 0:51Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, it takes me back. I put myself
- 0:53Speaker 1: for school doing this, so I think I'll describe a
- 0:56Speaker 1: hat and get in there.
- 0:59Speaker 4: As it impacted did anything practice wise, football wise? I
- 1:02Speaker 4: know media wise it has, But has it impacted anything
- 1:04Speaker 4: they're doing?
- 1:06Speaker 1: I think from a football perspective, I think those days
- 1:08Speaker 1: are coming. They don't have the heavy equipment moving the
- 1:12Speaker 1: earth yet. I think once that starts, the I think
- 1:17Speaker 1: that's going to be the soundtrack of practice for the season,
- 1:21Speaker 1: all right, Jeff, to.
- 1:22Speaker 5: Get the patch of ten done, deal done? What's that
- 1:25Speaker 5: mean for us now where we at as a football team,
- 1:28Speaker 5: and what's that do for the Broncos moving forward?
- 1:31Speaker 1: Well, Tom, I think two things they did. I think
- 1:33Speaker 1: that I think Sirtan and his representatives and the team
- 1:37Speaker 1: worked out the best salary cap scenario because it is
- 1:40Speaker 1: a true extension, it doesn't kick in until twenty six,
- 1:44Speaker 1: so then they are fully passed the Russell Wilson dead
- 1:49Speaker 1: money problems in twenty twenty six. So he's playing on
- 1:54Speaker 1: the current deal for two more seasons and then the
- 1:58Speaker 1: extension kicks in in twenty six. So that's a little
- 2:01Speaker 1: bit of a favor from certain and his reps to
- 2:04Speaker 1: the Broncos in a way, and the Broncos in return
- 2:09Speaker 1: make them the highest paid defensive back in league history.
- 2:13Speaker 1: So I think they found the common ground they needed
- 2:16Speaker 1: to and that's one thing. The second thing I think
- 2:19Speaker 1: is important, much like when they did the Justin Simmons
- 2:23Speaker 1: deal back in twenty twenty one, I think it's I
- 2:26Speaker 1: think every team has to show its locker room its
- 2:31Speaker 1: homegrown players are important to them and that they will
- 2:35Speaker 1: sign their own marquee players rather than consistently looking to
- 2:40Speaker 1: the horizon of free agency. And I think in a
- 2:42Speaker 1: locker room, at least in my experience, I think that
- 2:46Speaker 1: buy in is necessary and I think that does that
- 2:49Speaker 1: for a team in transition. It shows them that if
- 2:54Speaker 1: you succeed here and you play well here, they will
- 2:57Speaker 1: pay you here.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Also another now today, we haven't really got in his bone.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Next part of the captaincy of the Denver Broncos is
- 3:05Speaker 3: that a coaches selection? Is that an open vote by
- 3:08Speaker 3: the players? How did that come about?
- 3:11Speaker 1: You know, Skoty, I'll be interested to see how they
- 3:13Speaker 1: did it. I think in the past Sean has picked
- 3:16Speaker 1: the captains and there's been a lot of game by
- 3:19Speaker 1: game basis of some of those slots. But if the
- 3:24Speaker 1: starting quarterback isn't the captain, you got a problem, I
- 3:27Speaker 1: think on any team. So I would have assumed he
- 3:30Speaker 1: was going to be a captain once he was named
- 3:32Speaker 1: the starter.
- 3:34Speaker 5: I've never trusted those voting accounts, Scott. I've never trusted
- 3:38Speaker 5: they're actually reading those things. They might invite the team
- 3:40Speaker 5: to vote on it, and then at the end of
- 3:42Speaker 5: the day there's always somebody like, uh, we voted for that, dude.
- 3:46Speaker 5: That being said, there was a couple of interesting moves
- 3:49Speaker 5: with the captains. Jeff instead of Garrett Bowles or Mike
- 3:52Speaker 5: McGlinchey on the offensive line, Quinn Minors named captain. Is
- 3:56Speaker 5: that a surprise to you at all?
- 3:58Speaker 1: Yeah? I guess. You know, I'm always curious, like yourself,
- 4:01Speaker 1: what the what the vote really was, if there was
- 4:04Speaker 1: a vote, or if any of the votes were tabulated.
- 4:07Speaker 1: But you know, I always think a homegrown player, a
- 4:14Speaker 1: drafted player is always carries a little more weight as
- 4:17Speaker 1: a captain. But that's just my little sportswriter view of that.
- 4:22Speaker 1: And you know, I think sometimes it is interesting at
- 4:26Speaker 1: a position where a captain, you know, we're won his
- 4:30Speaker 1: name and one isn't. I don't think in his whole
- 4:33Speaker 1: time here that Chris Harris, for example, was ever the captain.
- 4:37Speaker 1: And I think sometimes it was because he was too
- 4:39Speaker 1: honest in his assessment with his teammates. But that's just me.
- 4:43Speaker 3: And you remember, there's a big sting for a while
- 4:45Speaker 3: that von Miller took what five years before they voted
- 4:48Speaker 3: him a captain, didn't they?
- 4:50Speaker 1: Yeah, it took a long time, but you know, again
- 4:53Speaker 1: that it's not really transparency scotty full transparency.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Oh we should be used to that in election wise. Hey,
- 5:02Speaker 3: real fast, we had we had a discussion about this
- 5:04Speaker 3: a while ago. Dmc was on a show in Seattle,
- 5:07Speaker 3: and everybody's like, well, we don't know much about Seattle,
- 5:10Speaker 3: about this different team, right, what can you tell us
- 5:12Speaker 3: about the Seattle team?
- 5:15Speaker 1: I can tell you the coach is considered a defensive wizard.
- 5:18Speaker 1: So it's not the best of opening weeks for bo Nix.
- 5:22Speaker 1: I don't think in terms of defensive creativity and odds
- 5:27Speaker 1: fronts and situational rushers, this guy is right now. I
- 5:32Speaker 1: know NFL coaches who have gone and studied him when
- 5:35Speaker 1: he was in the college game, and uh, and when
- 5:39Speaker 1: he was Baltimore's coordinator. So uh, Mike McDonald is regarded
- 5:45Speaker 1: as a really creative defensive mind. And I'm I'm I
- 5:50Speaker 1: don't think I'm too far off base and saying in
- 5:52Speaker 1: terms of unexpected things from a defense. You know, bow
- 5:57Speaker 1: Nick's got the worst defensive player caller he could have
- 6:00Speaker 1: gotten for his opener.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Infinite Jess is a novel by David Foster Wallace. Is
- 6:09Speaker 4: fourteen hundred pages long, and you looked at that and said,
- 6:12Speaker 4: hold my beer and wrote the history of the Broncos
- 6:14Speaker 4: why they didn't make the playoffs for the past few
- 6:17Speaker 4: years on ESPN dot com. That was quite a piece.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Jeff my goodness. First of all, Wow, take us behind
- 6:25Speaker 4: the writing of that and what you might have learned
- 6:27Speaker 4: when you look back on this period of time.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, you know, I know everybody was around
- 6:35Speaker 1: for all of it, but I think sometimes it's just
- 6:36Speaker 1: interesting to see what people remember and how they remember it.
- 6:42Speaker 1: And I pulled probably twenty five people, you know, former coaches,
- 6:48Speaker 1: former players, people who are around the organization and just said,
- 6:52Speaker 1: give me your three or four events you think were
- 6:56Speaker 1: the ones that pushed the Broncos to they are, And
- 7:01Speaker 1: you know, everybody had a different take on it, and
- 7:03Speaker 1: some of the picks were mine and mine alone. But
- 7:07Speaker 1: it was fun just to sort of see. I always
- 7:10Speaker 1: like to talk to people and see where they come
- 7:12Speaker 1: down on how things got the way they are. And
- 7:17Speaker 1: I thought it was a pretty interesting list. And you know,
- 7:19Speaker 1: as you can see, a lot of it involved the quarterback.
- 7:22Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, well right, what are your top three turning
- 7:26Speaker 4: points maybe moments in the past decade. I guess almost
- 7:30Speaker 4: decade since they've been to the playoffs. What do you think?
- 7:33Speaker 1: Yeah, you know a lot of people went with Peyton
- 7:35Speaker 1: Manning's injury or retirement. I personally would have picked when
- 7:40Speaker 1: he injured the foot, because I think he would have
- 7:44Speaker 1: been intrigued about playing longer if he physically could have
- 7:47Speaker 1: held up longer. So that for me, it was the
- 7:51Speaker 1: physical element was probably more important. But you know, and
- 7:57Speaker 1: then I think, you know, I guess I'm not one
- 8:00Speaker 1: who comes down on me the mistrain of Josh Allen
- 8:06Speaker 1: because I don't believe I saw any scenario here where
- 8:10Speaker 1: he would have gotten three years to figure it out
- 8:14Speaker 1: the way he got three years with Brian dave Ball
- 8:16Speaker 1: as his offensive coordinator in all three seasons that he
- 8:20Speaker 1: got in Buffalo.
- 8:20Speaker 5: So that's not what about justin fields? If we drafted
- 8:24Speaker 5: justin fields, it would have been good, right, Jeff.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Well, I've been told that over the years, But I
- 8:29Speaker 1: think Patterkaan's a pretty damn good player. But that's where
- 8:32Speaker 1: I come down.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Hey, we talk about that if you're going to my
- 8:36Speaker 3: list right there, I think the Manning health, could he
- 8:38Speaker 3: have played another year? And then I think you gotta
- 8:40Speaker 3: go with Gary leaving I think they killed him, and
- 8:45Speaker 3: I would say real fast, I would say the drafting
- 8:48Speaker 3: of Pax and Lynch was worse, almost worse, if not
- 8:52Speaker 3: worse than the not drafting of Josh Allen.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean they drafted, they traded up. You know,
- 9:00Speaker 1: whether the Cowboys were bluffing or whatever. I would have
- 9:02Speaker 1: wanted to see for myself. But they trade it up
- 9:06Speaker 1: for Past and Lynch, and then he didn't win two
- 9:09Speaker 1: consecutive quarterback competitions that were stacked for him to win.
- 9:14Speaker 1: So I think that was pretty significant. But for my
- 9:18Speaker 1: money and my time around the team, I think Kubiak
- 9:21Speaker 1: stepping away was maybe the biggest item on the list
- 9:25Speaker 1: after Manning retires.
- 9:26Speaker 4: It's a great piece, and for those who may be
- 9:29Speaker 4: trying to catch up on Bronco's history, I would highly
- 9:31Speaker 4: advise you to. It was a longer piece, man. I
- 9:34Speaker 4: don't know how many long fourm pieces like that you
- 9:37Speaker 4: write a year, Jeff. But uh, that was a doozy
- 9:41Speaker 4: So it.
- 9:42Speaker 5: Sounds so shocked you could write it.
- 9:43Speaker 4: No, no, no, I'm not shocking and write it. But it's
- 9:45Speaker 4: just unusual. It's it's not par for the course, Jeff,
- 9:48Speaker 4: Am I right about that?
- 9:50Speaker 1: Well, I think pick and choose. You know, we got
- 9:54Speaker 1: we got a few employees and only one website. That's
- 9:57Speaker 1: what I've discovered.
- 10:01Speaker 4: Appreciate it, Jeff. We'll talk to you next week. Thank you, Jeff.
- 10:05Speaker 4: All right, that's Jeff Flakewall, brought to you by the
- 10:08Speaker 4: International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Tyler was trying to bait
- 10:11Speaker 4: me into a fight with Jeff. I'm not going to
- 10:13Speaker 4: take that.
- 10:14Speaker 5: Yeah,
