Latest / Birdland Territory / Colton Cowser with a walkoff HR, but O's lose Game 2
Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: For the Birds today it was a mixed bag. They
- 0:09Speaker 1: played a doubleheader on the Memorial Day Sunday at Camden Yards,
- 0:13Speaker 1: winning the first one dramatically and losing the second one.
- 0:17Speaker 1: They split with the Tigers, winning five to three on
- 0:20Speaker 1: the Colton Kowser walk off home run at a four
- 0:23Speaker 1: to one loss in Game two. Welcome in another edition
- 0:26Speaker 1: of Birdland Territory with Steve Maleuski, Tim Barbaras and Brad Brock. Hey, guys,
- 0:32Speaker 1: let's go to the first game first, because that was
- 0:34Speaker 1: a little more exciting. We'll get into aspects of all
- 0:37Speaker 1: of this day in a moment here, but let me
- 0:41Speaker 1: start with Brandon Young. We'll get to Colton Kowser's walk
- 0:44Speaker 1: off in a minute. But Brandon Young did it again
- 0:48Speaker 1: for the Orioles in a time when Dean Kramer's been out,
- 0:51Speaker 1: Eflyn is out for the year. Those two have combined
- 0:54Speaker 1: to make three starts. Brandon Young has made seven and oh,
- 0:57Speaker 1: by the way, the Orioles are six and one in
- 1:00Speaker 1: those games and today six and two thirds no earn runs.
- 1:05Speaker 1: I mean, he's the only Oriole starter this year that
- 1:07Speaker 1: has two games not allowing an earned run in and
- 1:10Speaker 1: outing and so pretty impressive stuff. What did you guys
- 1:14Speaker 1: see from Brandon Young today?
- 1:17Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what, I think today's just kind of
- 1:18Speaker 2: a continuation of what we talked about a couple of
- 1:20Speaker 2: weeks ago in Miami. That first thing, he gave up
- 1:23Speaker 2: a couple of runs, and from that point on, I've
- 1:25Speaker 2: been it's been watching a different pitcher. He's just been
- 1:27Speaker 2: attacking so much with his four seamer. He has so
- 1:30Speaker 2: much trust in that pitch and now his splitter. He's
- 1:33Speaker 2: really tightened up the metrics that they were showing on
- 1:35Speaker 2: the TV with the movement profile. Today was a really
- 1:39Speaker 2: really good pitch and I think he's just leaning really
- 1:41Speaker 2: into that four team at the top of the zone
- 1:43Speaker 2: and then he's mixing in that splitter once he gets ahead,
- 1:46Speaker 2: and it's a really tough mix for hitters.
- 1:48Speaker 3: To be on. And his force seeming right now is
- 1:52Speaker 3: playing just at an elite level. I mean, just watching
- 1:54Speaker 3: some of the swings.
- 1:55Speaker 2: These guys are swinging first pitch and just popping up
- 1:57Speaker 2: fly balls, routine fly balls, the right field, routine flyball,
- 2:00Speaker 2: a center field. It just really shows you that that
- 2:02Speaker 2: pitch is really playing at a very very high level
- 2:04Speaker 2: right now.
- 2:06Speaker 4: I'd hate to make it so simple, guys, But he
- 2:09Speaker 4: just threw strikes like that. That was the biggest thing
- 2:11Speaker 4: that stuck out. Stuck out to me today. He got
- 2:14Speaker 4: first pitch strikes on twenty one of twenty eight batters
- 2:17Speaker 4: that he ended up facing. Seventy one of his one
- 2:20Speaker 4: hundred and five pitches were strikes. And with Brandon Young,
- 2:24Speaker 4: this isn't a guy with spectacular nasty stuff per se.
- 2:29Speaker 4: But if you just pounce the strike zone, if you
- 2:32Speaker 4: end up being fearless, you give yourself a chance. And
- 2:35Speaker 4: I thought it was really interesting going back a few
- 2:38Speaker 4: weeks at this point where he had the blow up
- 2:41Speaker 4: start against the Astros, and he really took that to
- 2:44Speaker 4: heart and a lot of those runs ended up being
- 2:46Speaker 4: unearned and there were a lot of defensive miscues, but
- 2:49Speaker 4: it was very hard on himself. And oh man, I
- 2:52Speaker 4: feel like I got past that point where last year,
- 2:55Speaker 4: you know, he'd have a spectacular start like he was
- 2:57Speaker 4: in Houston where yeah, he almost had a no hitter,
- 3:00Speaker 4: and then a blow up start where it's just been
- 3:03Speaker 4: so consistent for him. Guys, Like if you would have
- 3:07Speaker 4: told me back in March that on May twenty fourth,
- 3:12Speaker 4: Brandon Young would have the best er on the starting rotation.
- 3:15Speaker 4: I would have said that no way, no way, right,
- 3:18Speaker 4: Kyle Braddish and Trevor Rodgers and and you know Boz
- 3:21Speaker 4: and Bassett and Efflin at that point. But here we are,
- 3:25Speaker 4: and he is the only starting pitcher with a sub
- 3:28Speaker 4: for Era on the Orioles.
- 3:32Speaker 1: That's quite remarkable and much to his credit and much needed,
- 3:36Speaker 1: because in a time when others are not pitching as expected,
- 3:39Speaker 1: he's pitching better than expected. So it's a nice surprise.
- 3:43Speaker 1: He was the minor league pitcher of the Year a
- 3:45Speaker 1: couple of years ago, but he's never been a big,
- 3:47Speaker 1: highly ranked prospect or someone throwing ninety eight or as
- 3:51Speaker 1: you said, Tim has to blow you away stuff. But
- 3:54Speaker 1: he's doing what he needs to win. I think, Brad
- 3:57Speaker 1: you called it there. Fastballs at the tops, litters at
- 4:00Speaker 1: the bottom. This change he'd made with his split today
- 4:04Speaker 1: was pretty impressive. I've not seen very often from one
- 4:08Speaker 1: start to another a five mile an hour difference in velocity.
- 4:14Speaker 1: His splitter was averaging eighty seven point seven miles per
- 4:17Speaker 1: hour this year, but eighty two point eight today, and
- 4:21Speaker 1: Statcas tells us it was getting thirty inches of drop today,
- 4:26Speaker 1: thirty eight, so he eased off the gas and got
- 4:31Speaker 1: better movement. That's got to be some real trial and er,
- 4:34Speaker 1: I would think, or some real data work by the
- 4:37Speaker 1: pitching coaches brad to come up with what led to
- 4:40Speaker 1: what we saw today.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think when you uh, the biggest number
- 4:45Speaker 2: I saw there like he obviously the vertical drop was
- 4:47Speaker 2: a lot, but his horizontal run they showed on the
- 4:50Speaker 2: TV and it was I think like.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Six inches less.
- 4:53Speaker 2: And when you're throwing flour seamers like he does, you
- 4:55Speaker 2: want less run and more drop. And so, like you said,
- 4:58Speaker 2: it's it's a lot of trial and it's probably different grips.
- 5:01Speaker 2: It's probably figuring out where to start the pitch. But
- 5:04Speaker 2: to me, it's watching his those like old school pitching.
- 5:07Speaker 2: And by old school, I mean like when I played,
- 5:08Speaker 2: it was inside outside, up, down, push pull, so you
- 5:12Speaker 2: get it. Basically, it's just speeding hitters up and slowing
- 5:15Speaker 2: them down, going up, going down, going in and going out.
- 5:18Speaker 2: And it's just to me, I love watching that kind
- 5:20Speaker 2: of pitching. Like you said, he doesn't have blow you
- 5:22Speaker 2: away stuff, but he just uses the shrike zones so
- 5:25Speaker 2: well and he's just proving that you don't need to
- 5:27Speaker 2: have this unbelievable stuff to have success at the major
- 5:30Speaker 2: league level. They always say that if you can locate pitches,
- 5:34Speaker 2: you can do it for a long time, and it's
- 5:35Speaker 2: it's the tail's oldest time in baseball, and he's proven
- 5:38Speaker 2: that right now. I love to see it, and especially
- 5:40Speaker 2: a guy that after he made that start with the Astros,
- 5:43Speaker 2: there were some roster moves that had to be made
- 5:44Speaker 2: there and for him to turn a season around the
- 5:46Speaker 2: way he did, this guy's going nowhere. And I think
- 5:49Speaker 2: I love seeing stuff like that happen in a season
- 5:51Speaker 2: and really really happy for him, and it's great to
- 5:54Speaker 2: see him out there with this confidence that he has.
- 5:57Speaker 4: Man focusing in on that though, that's splittering, and how
- 6:00Speaker 4: he made that big of an adjustment between his last
- 6:04Speaker 4: start in terms of the grip, in terms like how
- 6:07Speaker 4: much does a pitcher tinker with that in season at
- 6:11Speaker 4: this point a month and a half, you know, almost
- 6:13Speaker 4: two months in.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, honestly, it might not be. It might
- 6:17Speaker 2: not be this crazy pitch change. It could just be
- 6:19Speaker 2: today maybe that's what it was. I think you'd have
- 6:21Speaker 2: to see it again next start to see if there's
- 6:23Speaker 2: that drastic difference or maybe just today it was just
- 6:26Speaker 2: really good. I don't know, it's it's one of those things,
- 6:29Speaker 2: like you're saying in between starts like that, that is
- 6:31Speaker 2: a that's a Jurassic change between the velocity and the
- 6:34Speaker 2: drop he was getting.
- 6:35Speaker 3: So to me, that tells me he's doing something different
- 6:37Speaker 3: with the grip.
- 6:38Speaker 2: But I'll be interested to see his next start if
- 6:40Speaker 2: it's if it's still in that range, or if the
- 6:41Speaker 2: velocity ticks up a little bit and he doesn't have
- 6:43Speaker 2: as much drop. But there's just some things where your
- 6:45Speaker 2: stuff is just better, period, and you don't know it
- 6:48Speaker 2: until you're warming up or even when you get out
- 6:49Speaker 2: on the mound. So maybe it was just a good
- 6:52Speaker 2: day for the splitter. Maybe there's more humidity.
- 6:54Speaker 3: I don't know. Maybe it's just one of those things where.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Everything just kind of lined up and it was it
- 6:58Speaker 2: was a great pitch today for him.
- 7:00Speaker 1: It's interesting, and we don't know this answer as we
- 7:03Speaker 1: tape this, but I wonder if that's been in the
- 7:07Speaker 1: works for a while and he broke it out today,
- 7:11Speaker 1: this grip, because it seems fast to go from one
- 7:14Speaker 1: start to another, all these different velocities and so forth.
- 7:18Speaker 1: I mean, maybe that can happen, Brad, or maybe it
- 7:21Speaker 1: was something that was on the cutting room floor and
- 7:25Speaker 1: then today it made it into the film.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what it honestly could have been too,
- 7:29Speaker 2: is he's maybe working on two different ones.
- 7:31Speaker 3: And wasn't ready to break it out in the game.
- 7:33Speaker 2: But he's been doing this work for weeks or a
- 7:36Speaker 2: month or two months at this point, but he finally
- 7:38Speaker 2: felt comfortable trying a new grip or trying to throw
- 7:40Speaker 2: it a different way, and today was the day to
- 7:43Speaker 2: try it and it worked out really well. So hopefully
- 7:46Speaker 2: he can continue doing that and whatever he did today
- 7:48Speaker 2: hopefully can do the next start because it was really
- 7:51Speaker 2: fun and impressive to watch.
- 7:54Speaker 4: I just think with Brandon young guys, it's just really impressive,
- 7:58Speaker 4: you know, in terms of him taking advantage of this opportunity.
- 8:02Speaker 4: And it goes back to a conversation that we've been
- 8:05Speaker 4: having for a while about this team in terms of
- 8:08Speaker 4: there's been a lot of guys that have stepped up
- 8:11Speaker 4: with these opportunities, but they still find themselves where they are,
- 8:15Speaker 4: and that is seven games below five hundred.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Yeah they do. And so the Ools come out of
- 8:22Speaker 1: that doubleheader guys with a record of twenty three and
- 8:25Speaker 1: thirty and overall they have lost fifteen of their last
- 8:29Speaker 1: twenty three, just eight and fourteen in May after losing
- 8:32Speaker 1: Game two. Now, we want to remind everyone watching Birdland

- 8:58Speaker 1: please dose follow us on our podcast networks as well
- 9:03Speaker 1: and help get us to a thousand subscribers, a great
- 9:07Speaker 1: number we are shooting for. Let's go back to Game
- 9:12Speaker 1: one in the end, which was also pretty exciting. Colton
- 9:15Speaker 1: Cawncer has had it for kind of forgettable year, and
- 9:18Speaker 1: then on an O two pitch from a future Hall
- 9:21Speaker 1: of Famer Kenley Jensen, he hit one four forty. I mean,
- 9:25Speaker 1: you can't draw that up where you can't right predict that.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Talk about unexpected, but what a swing that was for
- 9:31Speaker 1: Cowser today. Almost hope that gets some going and extended
- 9:35Speaker 1: run of some success here.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Yeah, it would be awesome to see him get gold
- 9:39Speaker 2: and they could use him desperately just because of his power,
- 9:42Speaker 2: because of his defense, because of everything he brings to
- 9:44Speaker 2: locker room. He's one of those guys that you can
- 9:46Speaker 2: tell they rally around that. I mean, that was the
- 9:48Speaker 2: great reaction by the dugout.
- 9:50Speaker 3: They were so pumped for him.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Manager had a lot to say of him working really
- 9:54Speaker 2: hard the last two months to try to get a
- 9:56Speaker 2: swing where he wanted it to be. And then of
- 9:58Speaker 2: all pitches, Kenny Jensen, known for his cutters to been
- 10:01Speaker 2: throwing it for fifteen years now, and he gets a
- 10:03Speaker 2: two scene where that he tried to sneak by him
- 10:05Speaker 2: and he was ready for it. He just dropped the
- 10:07Speaker 2: head on it, and I mean he absolutely crushed that ball.
- 10:09Speaker 2: It just it goes to show that Colton cows are
- 10:11Speaker 2: it's there. It's it's more about just making more contact
- 10:14Speaker 2: because the power's there, It's always going to be there.
- 10:17Speaker 2: That's kind of what his swing is right there, just
- 10:20Speaker 2: dropping the head down in the zone.
- 10:21Speaker 3: And he can really give the ball right.
- 10:23Speaker 2: But that was a great swing, great win, and at
- 10:25Speaker 2: a time they really needed it. I mean, think about
- 10:27Speaker 2: the conversation we'd be happening tonight if he doesn't hit
- 10:29Speaker 2: that ball and he pops it up or strikes out.
- 10:32Speaker 2: It's I mean, twenty three and thirty as opposed to
- 10:35Speaker 2: twenty two and thirty one.
- 10:36Speaker 3: It's it's kind of a drastic difference there. Holton cows would.
- 10:41Speaker 4: Be Guys, it's just one of the biggest X factors
- 10:44Speaker 4: in this lineup because we've seen him when he's at
- 10:47Speaker 4: his best. He can go on stretches for weeks where
- 10:50Speaker 4: he's really carrying the ball club and we know what
- 10:52Speaker 4: he brings from a defensive perspective, but this is a
- 10:55Speaker 4: very athletic player. This is someone that can steal bag
- 10:58Speaker 4: if he gets on and we know that the raw
- 11:01Speaker 4: power is there and it has not been the start
- 11:04Speaker 4: of the season that Colden Kowser would have won it.
- 11:06Speaker 4: But if you look back over his last ten games, guys,
- 11:09Speaker 4: he's got a nine to eighty two ops. He's got
- 11:12Speaker 4: hits in five of his last six games, including that
- 11:15Speaker 4: big walk off. So if he can start trending in
- 11:18Speaker 4: the right direction, I think that that would do wonders
- 11:21Speaker 4: for this lineup because you have him slotted in the
- 11:24Speaker 4: bottom third, and that's someone that can help turn this
- 11:27Speaker 4: lineup back over.
- 11:31Speaker 1: And it's been a quite a fall here for Colton
- 11:33Speaker 1: because if you go back to twenty twenty four, when
- 11:35Speaker 1: he was second for the Rookie of the Year, ops
- 11:38Speaker 1: was seven sixty eight, I mean, he looked like he
- 11:40Speaker 1: was really on his way, and then he fell off
- 11:43Speaker 1: to six fifty five and twenty twenty five and this
- 11:46Speaker 1: year at game time today, five point thirty and exit
- 11:50Speaker 1: Velocity's down. He's you know, his career k raps over thirty.
- 11:54Speaker 1: So there are things to clean up and things that
- 11:58Speaker 1: make you wonder if he's gonna do it long term.
- 12:02Speaker 1: But also I think with Kowser, I think there's a
- 12:06Speaker 1: will there, a drive there, and a one two there
- 12:08Speaker 1: that is hidden under the scenes, a little bit that's
- 12:11Speaker 1: gonna have to serve him well here. I mean, Brad,
- 12:14Speaker 1: any young player has to deal with ups and downs,
- 12:17Speaker 1: and Kowser's had extended downs here. But today was a
- 12:21Speaker 1: big up for him and maybe work paid.
- 12:24Speaker 3: Off, yeah, for sure.
- 12:26Speaker 2: And it's almost after these games I was wondering the
- 12:29Speaker 2: lineup seems to change so much day to day.
- 12:32Speaker 3: We don't see Basaillo in there every day. We don't
- 12:34Speaker 3: see Kowser in there every day.
- 12:35Speaker 2: It kind of just seems to be moving around with
- 12:38Speaker 2: them not being able to score a ton of runs
- 12:40Speaker 2: on a consistent basis. Do you think there's any world
- 12:43Speaker 2: where they just say we're gonna run these same at
- 12:45Speaker 2: least eight guys out there every game, or this is
- 12:47Speaker 2: kind of just how they do it.
- 12:48Speaker 3: They've been doing it.
- 12:49Speaker 2: You guys have obviously watched way more games the last
- 12:51Speaker 2: couple of years. Is it kind of just how the
- 12:52Speaker 2: front office likes to do it. They like to do matchups,
- 12:55Speaker 2: They like lefties facing right e's. Is that just kind
- 12:57Speaker 2: of how it was going to be? Because I just
- 12:59Speaker 2: I keep looking at the lineup changes every day and
- 13:01Speaker 2: it's you just never get the same The first four
- 13:03Speaker 2: or five are always the same, and then after that,
- 13:05Speaker 2: so you just kind of never know who's going to
- 13:06Speaker 2: be what slot.
- 13:08Speaker 4: I think it's definitely organizational guys where I know Craig
- 13:12Speaker 4: Albernas was asked about that a couple of weeks ago
- 13:14Speaker 4: about I know, gosh, through the first thirty thirty five games,
- 13:18Speaker 4: I think the Orioles only used the same lineup twice.
- 13:21Speaker 4: I want to say, and Albernas was kind of pointing
- 13:25Speaker 4: that out, and Brad, this is a team that's definitely
- 13:27Speaker 4: leaned very heavy into platoons.
- 13:29Speaker 3: But I am kind of with you where I.
- 13:32Speaker 4: Just feel like players can be creatures of habit, and
- 13:35Speaker 4: you know, guys toggling between multiple different positions, guys moving
- 13:40Speaker 4: all up and down the lineup and not getting that
- 13:43Speaker 4: consistent run. I'm sure that has to affect some of
- 13:46Speaker 4: the players. I think it's definitely a fair point to
- 13:49Speaker 4: point out that consistency could do some of these guys wonders.
- 13:56Speaker 3: Yeah, it's just an observation I made.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Like I said, it's it's you guys have obviously really
- 14:02Speaker 2: extensively watched this team for years now, and it's just
- 14:04Speaker 2: kind of the better teams I was on seem to
- 14:08Speaker 2: have a way more consistent lineup. And I know that's
- 14:11Speaker 2: a little different Baseball's change with the way they platoon
- 14:13Speaker 2: guys and stuff. It almost seems like they're purtuning guys
- 14:15Speaker 2: in the minor leagues where if they struggle against left
- 14:17Speaker 2: these they're only going to face righty's when they get
- 14:19Speaker 2: the triple A. But it was just one of those
- 14:22Speaker 2: thoughts I had that like, maybe just run them out
- 14:24Speaker 2: there for seven games in a row and see what happens,
- 14:26Speaker 2: because they obviously like the guys on the team, obviously
- 14:29Speaker 2: like Holdon and they love to see him go out
- 14:31Speaker 2: there and do more for the team. But today was
- 14:33Speaker 2: a great start, and ipe I hope a jump starts
- 14:35Speaker 2: to the point where that he forces himself to have
- 14:37Speaker 2: to play every day.
- 14:38Speaker 4: I also think it's a fair question to ask, and
- 14:42Speaker 4: we know that this is a defense that has really
- 14:44Speaker 4: struggled throughout the year for the Orioles, where do you
- 14:48Speaker 4: almost want to go with more of the glove first guy,
- 14:50Speaker 4: because with Dylan Beavers being on the il, we know
- 14:54Speaker 4: Tyler O'Neil is really really struggling right now. So it
- 14:57Speaker 4: is it almost just more prudent put the guy more
- 15:01Speaker 4: of a sure thing of a defender and Colden Cows
- 15:04Speaker 4: are out there, and especially now that he is swinging
- 15:06Speaker 4: the bat better of late.
- 15:10Speaker 3: Yeah, it'll be interesting to see I think here.
- 15:12Speaker 2: I think it's one of those things where I think
- 15:14Speaker 2: everything has to be on the table with where they're
- 15:16Speaker 2: at record wise, and with it from.
- 15:17Speaker 3: Getting close to June.
- 15:19Speaker 2: I just think that with like we keep talking about
- 15:21Speaker 2: the talent on this roster at some point you just
- 15:23Speaker 2: got to be like, we gotta try something else. I
- 15:25Speaker 2: don't know, it's just it's it's funny looking at in
- 15:27Speaker 2: the outside, Like on the team, you're not thinking about that.
- 15:29Speaker 3: You just whenever you're told to play, you play. You
- 15:31Speaker 3: don't question anything. You just go along with it.
- 15:34Speaker 2: But just being like on the outside now and kind
- 15:35Speaker 2: of looking at it out the roster's made up and
- 15:38Speaker 2: watching how much just talent is out there, it's just
- 15:41Speaker 2: it makes you wonder if they you know, you gotta
- 15:44Speaker 2: put all the cards out there, because we're almost June
- 15:46Speaker 2: and next thing they'll be June fifteenth and July, and
- 15:48Speaker 2: it's like you just don't want to look at your
- 15:50Speaker 2: where you're at in the standings and be just out
- 15:52Speaker 2: of it.
- 15:52Speaker 3: But come that point with just such a talented roster
- 15:55Speaker 3: like they have, I got to.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Think within the clubhouse, with the hitting coaches and the hitters,
- 16:02Speaker 1: they're thinking, like you're thinking, Brad, we should be better
- 16:06Speaker 1: than what the numbers are saying. The first five in
- 16:10Speaker 1: that lineup, that's pretty solid five, and a couple of
- 16:14Speaker 1: them are starting to swing it better now, gunn are
- 16:17Speaker 1: swinging it better. Alonzo's hit a couple of home runs
- 16:20Speaker 1: lately beside who's been on a tear, and then you
- 16:22Speaker 1: got guys at the bottom who can swing it and
- 16:25Speaker 1: have swung it, and so why isn't it adding up?
- 16:28Speaker 1: Like today, they scored three runs or less in the
- 16:32Speaker 1: second game, they're four and twenty two. So they just
- 16:35Speaker 1: got to scratch you out a couple more than they're
- 16:38Speaker 1: getting and right now, whatever is lacking there, I don't
- 16:42Speaker 1: think we have the answers, and I don't think they
- 16:44Speaker 1: have the answers right now.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just it seems like they'll go a game
- 16:49Speaker 2: where they hit with thruners in scoring position and they
- 16:51Speaker 2: just can't. We've talked about it multiple times. It's just
- 16:53Speaker 2: like grabbing the momentum of the season. I know it's
- 16:56Speaker 2: every game. They kind of look at every game's individual game,
- 16:59Speaker 2: but if there was every momentum swing, I felt.
- 17:01Speaker 3: Like that swing from Cold today was it.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Like that was a moment they were looking for from
- 17:05Speaker 2: a guy they were expecting to produce and hopefully have
- 17:09Speaker 2: a you know, a comeback season, and he hits a
- 17:11Speaker 2: huge homer to walk it off heading into the double header,
- 17:14Speaker 2: you almost wish it was a just a double header
- 17:16Speaker 2: right after each other, because you feel like that three
- 17:18Speaker 2: hour gap in between the games just kind of like
- 17:21Speaker 2: sucked life. It just it seemed like the life was
- 17:24Speaker 2: kind of just blow there in the second game, just
- 17:27Speaker 2: kind of all together, the weather.
- 17:29Speaker 3: It was just it just didn't feel like it.
- 17:31Speaker 2: The energy was there after that kind of a walk
- 17:33Speaker 2: off win, and if you're the Orioles, they.
- 17:35Speaker 4: Just got to find a way to continue to win
- 17:37Speaker 4: these series. Steve where, Yes, this is a very very
- 17:41Speaker 4: struggling Tigers team that came into Camden Yards and the
- 17:44Speaker 4: O's won the series. Wasn't the most esthetically pleasing series
- 17:48Speaker 4: in the world, absolutely not, but you took two of
- 17:50Speaker 4: three and now you just got to continue to stack it.
- 17:53Speaker 4: And the Rays come to town tomorrow for Memorial Day.
- 17:56Speaker 4: And you know the last episode that we did, guys,
- 17:59Speaker 4: you know that was following that the gut punch of
- 18:01Speaker 4: a loss on Wednesdays. So we've seen this team come
- 18:05Speaker 4: out a couple weeks ago when the Yankees killed them
- 18:09Speaker 4: in that four game series, they came back and they
- 18:11Speaker 4: won the series against the Yankees in Baltimore, and you're
- 18:13Speaker 4: hoping that you can do the same with the Rays
- 18:16Speaker 4: come to town beginning tomorrow.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Let's touch on that in a minute. Let's touch on
- 18:20Speaker 1: game two. Trevor Rodgers was good a lot today, but
- 18:24Speaker 1: there are a couple key swings which did him in.
- 18:26Speaker 1: We'll touch you on that and more coming up on
- 18:28Speaker 1: Birdland Territory.

- 19:31Speaker 1: I'm just not sure how to characterize Trevor Rodgers star today,
- 19:35Speaker 1: so I want to hear from you guys on it.
- 19:37Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 19:38Speaker 1: I can't make up my mind whether they pitch you
- 19:39Speaker 1: well or not, and I think he did a little
- 19:42Speaker 1: bit of both. The final box score shows four and
- 19:45Speaker 1: two thirds, four runs, two walks to strikeouts, a two
- 19:49Speaker 1: run homer by Dylan Dingler in the first inning, the
- 19:51Speaker 1: key two run single by Kevin McGonagall with two outs
- 19:55Speaker 1: of the bases loaded in the fifth, which knocked him
- 19:57Speaker 1: out of the game. In between, it looked at times
- 20:01Speaker 1: like his old self. How did you guys see it?
- 20:07Speaker 3: For me, I think it was two pitches.
- 20:10Speaker 2: It's like, it's hard to look at that start and
- 20:12Speaker 2: like not just think about the home run and the
- 20:14Speaker 2: hit that knocked him out of the game, because to me,
- 20:16Speaker 2: this two strike, two out thing is just unbelievable at
- 20:21Speaker 2: this point, Like I remember guys going through a couple
- 20:24Speaker 2: outings or a couple of starts having this problem but
- 20:25Speaker 2: it's been i mean a couple of months story with him,
- 20:28Speaker 2: it's been everything has happened with two outs and two strikes.
- 20:32Speaker 2: It almost seems like and it's just one of those things. Tim,
- 20:35Speaker 2: you said you sent the picture of where that pitch
- 20:38Speaker 2: was on the home run. Maybe there is something because
- 20:41Speaker 2: I mean, that's where you want to throw that pitch.
- 20:43Speaker 2: He threw it down and in where he was trying
- 20:44Speaker 2: to was throwing right to the location. I don't know
- 20:47Speaker 2: if that's just where guys are looking for pitches there.
- 20:49Speaker 2: I really don't know at this point, because I feel
- 20:52Speaker 2: like there's got to be something because he showed who
- 20:55Speaker 2: he who he can be there in those middle innings
- 20:57Speaker 2: in the second, third, fourth inning before he got in trouble,
- 21:00Speaker 2: and it's that pitcher is there. It's just these two
- 21:03Speaker 2: or three pitches a game. It seems to be like
- 21:05Speaker 2: that causes everything to go awry, and it's just he
- 21:09Speaker 2: he has got to be beyond frustrate at this point
- 21:11Speaker 2: because I'm sure he's Dovan and everything. I'm sure the
- 21:13Speaker 2: pitching coaches of Dovan and everything, and it's at this
- 21:16Speaker 2: point it's just it's it's become longer than just the
- 21:18Speaker 2: kind of freak thing that's happening.
- 21:22Speaker 4: And this this is a sixth start run now, and
- 21:25Speaker 4: I'm with you, Steve. There were flashes. You saw a
- 21:28Speaker 4: little bit.
- 21:28Speaker 3: More from Trevor Rodgers today.
- 21:31Speaker 4: But he just needs a clean first inning at this
- 21:34Speaker 4: point because it gets to the conversation that we continue
- 21:37Speaker 4: to have this team just playing from behind and trailing
- 21:40Speaker 4: and you give up the home run in the first
- 21:42Speaker 4: inning it's two to nothing. He was able to settle
- 21:45Speaker 4: in for a little bit there. But something that's been
- 21:48Speaker 4: more evident for me, especially over these last two starts,
- 21:52Speaker 4: and you look at the season total, the change up
- 21:55Speaker 4: just hasn't been there for him. And the change up
- 21:58Speaker 4: was a really, really good pitch for him last year,
- 22:02Speaker 4: and it's just getting hit. You know, opposing batters are
- 22:06Speaker 4: hitting three thirty three off his change up this year
- 22:09Speaker 4: compared to two h two last year. And that was
- 22:12Speaker 4: where the majority of the hard contact was on in
- 22:15Speaker 4: this game, Guys, you know the change up. You saw
- 22:19Speaker 4: four balls hard hit. Four of the eight were a
- 22:23Speaker 4: hard hit with the change up, and he's just not
- 22:25Speaker 4: fooling anybody with him.
- 22:29Speaker 1: I didn't like the cutter in the first inning. The
- 22:31Speaker 1: only reason I say that it was a two to
- 22:33Speaker 1: one count. It broke right into his bat right where
- 22:36Speaker 1: he was swinging. It was eighty three, and I think
- 22:38Speaker 1: that helped Dylan Dingler sit on that pitch two to one.
- 22:42Speaker 1: He might have been sitting cutter knows he's had a
- 22:44Speaker 1: tough time with his cutter. And he hit it out okay,
- 22:47Speaker 1: And did he tip his pitch? I think he just
- 22:50Speaker 1: threw a poor pitch. That's what my individual take is
- 22:53Speaker 1: it It wasn't executed as it should have been. And
- 22:57Speaker 1: in the McGonagall pitch, he was ahead one into he
- 23:01Speaker 1: missed with two sweepers. He wanted to get him out
- 23:03Speaker 1: on a sleeper.
- 23:04Speaker 3: But he did locate it.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Then came that change up to him you just mentioned,
- 23:08Speaker 1: and it was just high enough that he could get
- 23:10Speaker 1: back the ball. And this kid's having a great year
- 23:13Speaker 1: and he did it. So this is one of those
- 23:16Speaker 1: games I colmost hate when I hear pitchers say one
- 23:19Speaker 1: or two pitches beat me.
- 23:20Speaker 3: But this was one of those games.
- 23:22Speaker 2: That's what it was, exactly one or two pitches and
- 23:26Speaker 2: you know it's no sorry.
- 23:28Speaker 1: Hopefully he can he can build off that and and
- 23:31Speaker 1: he'll think that way and think most of my pitches
- 23:34Speaker 1: were good today, but but I don't know. It might
- 23:37Speaker 1: be tough for him to think that way now after
- 23:39Speaker 1: some rough outings.
- 23:40Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's funny you mentioned the cutter.
- 23:42Speaker 2: I went to a cutter later in my career when
- 23:45Speaker 2: I was having trouble against lefties, trying to use it
- 23:47Speaker 2: as a you know, pitches kind of neutralized them again.
- 23:51Speaker 2: And I was talking to Richard Bleier, who threw a
- 23:54Speaker 2: great cutters.
- 23:55Speaker 3: But he told me it's a Homer pitch and it's
- 23:57Speaker 3: He's like.
- 23:57Speaker 2: So it's it's one of it's like a it's it's
- 24:00Speaker 2: a great pitch to help you get to what you
- 24:02Speaker 2: want to but when it's there to hit, it's a
- 24:05Speaker 2: home run pitch. And I got beat on it multiple times,
- 24:08Speaker 2: and his voice kept coming into my head every time
- 24:10Speaker 2: I would give up one on it. It's like you're
- 24:12Speaker 2: trying to set It's not the pitch you're trying to
- 24:14Speaker 2: get the guy out on. You're trying to set something
- 24:16Speaker 2: else up on it. Instead of leaving it over the
- 24:18Speaker 2: plate like he did, he probably wanted it more in
- 24:20Speaker 2: He probably the first to tell you was the location
- 24:23Speaker 2: where it ended up on the box. Correct, Yes, but
- 24:25Speaker 2: I agree with Steve. The shape of it was very
- 24:27Speaker 2: hit able. It was on the plate the entire time.
- 24:30Speaker 2: It didn't have that late sharp break. It was more
- 24:32Speaker 2: of like a dull kind of sweeping action. That cutters
- 24:36Speaker 2: is not what you want to throw, So I know
- 24:38Speaker 2: that experience.
- 24:39Speaker 3: With the cutter.
- 24:40Speaker 2: At times, it's got to be in there to kind
- 24:42Speaker 2: of get to the change up, which is probably what
- 24:43Speaker 2: he was trying to do. And then when you get
- 24:45Speaker 2: beat on that cutter, you just kick yourself because it's like,
- 24:48Speaker 2: why not just go to the change up right there
- 24:50Speaker 2: or whatever pitch he was trying to throw instead, So
- 24:52Speaker 2: it's just frustrating at this point, he's got to be
- 24:55Speaker 2: so frustrated. I went through stretches like this and my career,
- 24:58Speaker 2: and it's just you go home and you just you
- 25:00Speaker 2: turn over it and you just think about, like, gosh,
- 25:03Speaker 2: like what is going on here? It's it seems unlucky,
- 25:05Speaker 2: it seems like I think the big up bat was
- 25:08Speaker 2: mcconnall with mcconagall with the one two count. I think
- 25:11Speaker 2: those two miss sliders really set the tone for that
- 25:14Speaker 2: at that because he had to be in the zone.
- 25:15Speaker 3: After that, do you get out of it?
- 25:19Speaker 4: Brad you know when when you've had those type of
- 25:22Speaker 4: tough stretches, and obviously it's different as starter compared to
- 25:26Speaker 4: a reliever. I get that, and he.
- 25:28Speaker 3: Has to stew on it even more.
- 25:29Speaker 4: I know you've you've talked about that in the past, Brad,
- 25:32Speaker 4: But how did you get out of it?
- 25:34Speaker 6: Like?
- 25:34Speaker 3: What do you do?
- 25:35Speaker 4: What do you look at it?
- 25:38Speaker 2: It's it's really just being able to flush the past.
- 25:41Speaker 2: And it's like getting that one out for me, it
- 25:43Speaker 2: was like one or two outings could change my just
- 25:46Speaker 2: how I was thinking about everything.
- 25:48Speaker 3: And it's just having success.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Like he's pitched for long enough at this point in
- 25:52Speaker 2: his career that you just have that success breed success
- 25:55Speaker 2: and like you know, like the luck just kind of
- 25:58Speaker 2: starts following your way once you have these that line
- 26:01Speaker 2: drive that used to be by the shortstop is now
- 26:04Speaker 2: to the shortstop or the second basement. It's just base
- 26:07Speaker 2: off is such a weird sport when it comes to that.
- 26:09Speaker 2: It's like the hard hit rates and everything. At the
- 26:12Speaker 2: end of the day, it doesn't mean anything because if
- 26:13Speaker 2: you hit it at somebody, it's an out and you
- 26:15Speaker 2: just kind of like, oh great, I got I put
- 26:17Speaker 2: up a zero today and now all of a sudden,
- 26:19Speaker 2: I'm thinking about that out and completely different than if
- 26:21Speaker 2: you hit the ball two feet.
- 26:22Speaker 3: Through his left and is a base hit.
- 26:23Speaker 2: So for me, it was really just kind of stacking
- 26:25Speaker 2: a couple outings together and to kind of get my
- 26:27Speaker 2: confidence back and then from there I could kind of roll.
- 26:30Speaker 2: But it's just at this point, it's been a long
- 26:32Speaker 2: it's been a long period of time.
- 26:33Speaker 3: I don't know how starters can go through stretches like this.
- 26:35Speaker 2: For me, if as a reliever, if you're six weeks
- 26:37Speaker 2: going bad, you're probably on a different team at this point.
- 26:40Speaker 2: So it's like, I don't know how you are able
- 26:44Speaker 2: to just move on and get by this one. But
- 26:46Speaker 2: it's he just got to keep going out there and
- 26:48Speaker 2: hopefully things start going his way. And like you said,
- 26:50Speaker 2: I think the biggest thing is getting out of that
- 26:52Speaker 2: first inding without any runs, because then from there he's
- 26:55Speaker 2: put together a good second and third innings. It's kind
- 26:57Speaker 2: of been running into trouble in the fourth and fifth.
- 27:00Speaker 2: It's been the first, the fourth and fifth for him
- 27:01Speaker 2: that really have just caused a lot of trouble.
- 27:05Speaker 1: Let's look ahead. Tampa Bay Rays are coming to Baltimore
- 27:08Speaker 1: for a series that begins on Memorial Day. We'll check
- 27:11Speaker 1: in on that next on Birdland Territory.
- 27:16Speaker 6: Big Bad Morning Show, Vinnie and Haney, Inside Access Live
- 27:20Speaker 6: on YouTube weekdays six till six search Baltimore one O
- 27:24Speaker 6: five seven the Fan, Subscribe for daily Short's right to
- 27:27Speaker 6: your phone and never miss what you missed one five
- 27:31Speaker 6: seven the Fan.
- 27:34Speaker 1: Well, if you look at the oil record, guys, they're
- 27:35Speaker 1: doing okay against under five hundred teams, less against the
- 27:39Speaker 1: better ones. So here's another chance to start to turn
- 27:43Speaker 1: that around. They got swept in New York and then
- 27:45Speaker 1: they beat the Yankees in Baltimore. Up they got swept
- 27:48Speaker 1: at Tampa Saint Pete. Now they'll try to beat the
- 27:50Speaker 1: Rays in Baltimore. What do you make of the upcoming series.
- 27:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's you got to kind of look
- 27:58Speaker 2: at the same as the Yankees. You can't really worry
- 28:00Speaker 2: about the week before. You just got to go out
- 28:02Speaker 2: there and play these games individually. And like Tim said
- 28:04Speaker 2: earlier in the episode, you won the series. Maybe it
- 28:07Speaker 2: wasn't the most sexy wins they've had, the season, but
- 28:10Speaker 2: they won a series. You just got to back it up,
- 28:12Speaker 2: and that's the only way they're going to get back
- 28:14Speaker 2: in this thing is by winning series. You can't worry
- 28:16Speaker 2: about sweeps, you can't worry about putting together winning streaks.
- 28:19Speaker 2: You just got to win two out of three. And
- 28:20Speaker 2: I think that's the mentality it has to be at
- 28:23Speaker 2: this point. It's it's fight or flight at this We've
- 28:25Speaker 2: been talking about for a couple weeks, but it's to
- 28:27Speaker 2: me it is fight or flight time, Like this is
- 28:29Speaker 2: the next four or five six weeks is going to
- 28:33Speaker 2: determine this season. And it's really coming down here that
- 28:36Speaker 2: if you start getting swept by the Rays and then
- 28:38Speaker 2: you have to face Toronto after that, it's these games
- 28:41Speaker 2: to start getting stacked up without the rest. And I
- 28:43Speaker 2: think today with Albert Suarez that was a huge audience
- 28:46Speaker 2: is going to have huge dividends coming here the rest
- 28:49Speaker 2: of the week.
- 28:50Speaker 4: Totally completely agree, but yeah, you look at this upcoming stretch,
- 28:54Speaker 4: it's a ton of division games. You got the Rays
- 28:57Speaker 4: and you get the Blue Jays, then the Red Sox,
- 28:59Speaker 4: then the Blue Jays. So it's a ton of division games.
- 29:03Speaker 4: And we know that this team has really struggled against
- 29:06Speaker 4: American League's opponents to start this year, and you got
- 29:09Speaker 4: to turn it around. You know it. This series that
- 29:12Speaker 4: they just had against the Rays, it was a lot
- 29:15Speaker 4: different than the the Orioles Yankees series where that was
- 29:18Speaker 4: extremely one sided. I know the first game got away
- 29:21Speaker 4: from the the O's where it ended up being sixteen
- 29:23Speaker 4: to six. But you look at the latter part of
- 29:26Speaker 4: those final two games. You had a two run lead
- 29:29Speaker 4: heading into the eighth inning and a heck of a
- 29:31Speaker 4: lot more often than not you expect to close out
- 29:34Speaker 4: that game. And we saw some defensive mistakes, you know,
- 29:37Speaker 4: Colden Kwser booting around a ball, a ball just getting
- 29:41Speaker 4: beyond his outstretched glove in the second game that led
- 29:46Speaker 4: to a couple of tack on runs where it was
- 29:48Speaker 4: definitely a lot more winnable prior to that. So it's
- 29:52Speaker 4: just avoiding beating yourself man like that. That's got to
- 29:55Speaker 4: be the biggest thing. You cannot afford to beat yourself
- 29:59Speaker 4: and give ex outs, give an extra ninety feet to
- 30:02Speaker 4: a team like the Rays that just does all of
- 30:05Speaker 4: the little things so well.
- 30:07Speaker 1: And the Ools saw that firsthand at the trap. They'll
- 30:10Speaker 1: see if they can turn it here. As the Rays
- 30:12Speaker 1: come to Baltimore, it looks like it'll be Bradish and
- 30:14Speaker 1: Boz in the first two, that's what projects to be,
- 30:17Speaker 1: and we'll see how it plays out. So maybe with
- 30:19Speaker 1: Bradish and Bos going better, Brandon Young is certainly going better,
- 30:23Speaker 1: you get a fourth in there all of a sudden,
- 30:25Speaker 1: maybe you have the makings of a bit of a
- 30:27Speaker 1: run for the rotation. Then the offense starts to do
