- 0:16Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome everybody to episode ninety seven of Cards
- 0:20Speaker 1: and Categories. I am my cool Art from Rasball, joined
- 0:23Speaker 1: as always by my very good friend Jeremy Brewer, also
- 0:26Speaker 1: from Rasball.
- 0:28Speaker 2: How you doing tonight, Buddy, doing fine? Welcome to July.
- 0:31Speaker 2: We are I'm gonna say, officially halfway through the baseball season.
- 0:34Speaker 2: I don't what's your definition of halfway through baseball seasons?
- 0:37Speaker 2: Eighty one games? Was the All Star break? I think
- 0:39Speaker 2: there's a very there's a good argument for both what
- 0:42Speaker 2: camp to use to them.
- 0:43Speaker 1: So I mean, I sit in the eighty one game mark,
- 0:47Speaker 1: so we did pass that this past week. Unfortunately, like
- 0:51Speaker 1: that is not what fangrafts use this. So when you
- 0:54Speaker 1: when I'm referring to it in a writing form, I
- 0:57Speaker 1: guess I'm not very consistent about it. Now that I
- 0:59Speaker 1: think about it, Probably should tighten that up. As a
- 1:02Speaker 1: you know, semi professional blogger baseball writer.
- 1:07Speaker 2: I think that's really the only thing that's holding you
- 1:09Speaker 2: from full professional is really is this decision? I mean,
- 1:12Speaker 2: it's a tough, tough one. I get it. I have
- 1:14Speaker 2: never never figured it out. So I was just curious
- 1:16Speaker 2: where you sat.
- 1:17Speaker 1: What about you? Where you said eighty one games or
- 1:19Speaker 1: pre post All Star break.
- 1:21Speaker 2: I'm eighty one games all the way. It's the All
- 1:23Speaker 2: Star break. It's just it's too late. You can't really
- 1:26Speaker 2: claim that that way. It's a good break, but it's
- 1:28Speaker 2: not halfway through the season. We're halfway through the season.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Extrapolate all you want.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think what could make it easier too,
- 1:34Speaker 1: is that the break was pretty much just about on
- 1:37Speaker 1: the end of June, so when you're doing splits and stuff,
- 1:39Speaker 1: makes it a little easier to run in manual game
- 1:42Speaker 1: logs and stuff like that. But we are speaking right
- 1:44Speaker 1: now on Tuesday, July. I guess it's Wednesday. My bad.
- 1:48Speaker 1: I had to day off, totally lost sense of time.
- 1:51Speaker 1: July second, it is a Wednesday, my dudes. And we
- 1:56Speaker 1: had the announcement of the All Star rosters, the starting
- 1:58Speaker 1: rosters today, so that's pretty awesome. But we are going
- 2:01Speaker 1: to talk a little bit about actually examining our fantasy
- 2:04Speaker 1: rosters in the second half of the show today. That's
- 2:06Speaker 1: gonna be our main focus because it is the halfway point.
- 2:09Speaker 1: As you mentioned there, it's a great time to really
- 2:12Speaker 1: start evaluating what you got to do in your fantasy leagues.
- 2:16Speaker 1: To be able to move up those roador standings, especially
- 2:19Speaker 1: during the All Star break. Like when you're used to
- 2:21Speaker 1: setting those lineups, looking at those daily matchups, looking at
- 2:25Speaker 1: the streaminator just to figure out what you're gonna do.
- 2:28Speaker 1: You don't have that during the All Star break, and
- 2:30Speaker 1: it's a fallow period, So why not start analyzing those
- 2:32Speaker 1: teams to figure out where you need to make moves.
- 2:35Speaker 1: We figured we'd focus on the hitting side, find bats
- 2:38Speaker 1: that can help you move up in certain categories, especially
- 2:42Speaker 1: because we have Rasball's top one hundred hitter guy here.
- 2:45Speaker 1: So I think we've got a great show have us.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Let's get into some of those news and notes. Let's
- 2:50Speaker 1: first open up with the injuries, because we've got quite
- 2:54Speaker 1: a little slew of injuries that have hit us here.
- 2:57Speaker 1: First one, we've got a the first rounder who I
- 3:01Speaker 1: mean eventually he was a first rounder by the end
- 3:04Speaker 1: of draft season, DH outfielder for the Houston Astros, Jordon Alvarez.
- 3:09Speaker 1: It sounds like he's gonna be out much longer now
- 3:12Speaker 1: with his hand injury. He suffered a setback in his
- 3:15Speaker 1: rehab from They didn't know what the hand injury was
- 3:18Speaker 1: at first, then discovered there was a small fracture, and
- 3:21Speaker 1: who knows kind of what else is going on, considering
- 3:24Speaker 1: this team has flubbed quite a few injuries over the
- 3:27Speaker 1: past few years, including Kyle Tucker's shin injury from last
- 3:31Speaker 1: year another one we're gonna talk about right after this.
- 3:33Speaker 1: But this doesn't look great for Jordon, who's always been
- 3:37Speaker 1: battling knee issues. Now he's got the hand issues. We're
- 3:39Speaker 1: seeing some other players that have been battling through wrist
- 3:43Speaker 1: and hand things recently between like Corby and Carrol Francisco Alvarez.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Maybe we'll have listening to trails on us here pretty soon.
- 3:51Speaker 1: It is not a pretty sight when you're a power hitter.
- 3:54Speaker 1: What are you doing in leagues where you have Jordon
- 3:57Speaker 1: right now? Is he cut a bowl possibly? Or is
- 4:00Speaker 1: it something you've whethered it this long? You've got to
- 4:03Speaker 1: just stick the course.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know who he's cuttable at this point,
- 4:08Speaker 2: just because he's such a professional hitter, and even in
- 4:11Speaker 2: the small sample size he's played this year, he's he's
- 4:14Speaker 2: hit the ball extremely well. His numbers don't show it,
- 4:18Speaker 2: and you know, one hundred of bats three homers hitting
- 4:20Speaker 2: two ten like, they don't show it. But the underlying
- 4:23Speaker 2: metrics look a lot healthier than that. From a power perspective,
- 4:26Speaker 2: the average is down a little bit, but again sample
- 4:29Speaker 2: or a hundred bat sample size. But you can't just
- 4:33Speaker 2: let the guy like you were on go knowing that
- 4:36Speaker 2: what he could do late in the season when people
- 4:38Speaker 2: are getting you know, you got call ups happening, people
- 4:41Speaker 2: aren't getting any everyday at bats. Like getting this kind
- 4:43Speaker 2: of guy back at that point in the season is
- 4:45Speaker 2: a boon that said, I'm I don't know that you're
- 4:49Speaker 2: getting one hundred percent. You weren't on Alvarez back. If
- 4:51Speaker 2: and when he does come back, I just think it
- 4:53Speaker 2: would be rash to cut him right now. It's but
- 4:56Speaker 2: this handager, I think when when it first happened, we
- 4:58Speaker 2: talked about it. It is just hard to know is
- 5:01Speaker 2: he really like gonna heal and how long is this
- 5:04Speaker 2: gonna like hold the power back, you know, the grip
- 5:07Speaker 2: on the bat that it's just such a concerning thing.
- 5:09Speaker 2: So I'm not cutting him, but I'm also not really
- 5:12Speaker 2: relying on him, like I think this sits in the
- 5:14Speaker 2: in the ballgame of I'm seeking out a replacement for
- 5:19Speaker 2: and hoping I don't need that replacement the whole rest
- 5:21Speaker 2: of the season.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that makes sense. What about maybe Dinastair
- 5:26Speaker 1: and keep your leagues where you have had yard On
- 5:29Speaker 1: and you've got him at a decent price, he would
- 5:32Speaker 1: have been capable for you, but you're in the race.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Do you maybe move a yord On piece to try
- 5:38Speaker 1: to cash in on it or are your concerns so
- 5:42Speaker 1: considerable long term you're just cashing in on your don
- 5:44Speaker 1: wherever you can. And in dynasty keeper.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Leagues, I think both apply in dynasty keeper leagues, to
- 5:50Speaker 2: be honest, like he is one of those kind of
- 5:53Speaker 2: guys that like he is I don't say one trick
- 5:55Speaker 2: pony because he's more and more than that, but he
- 5:58Speaker 2: doesn't have the speed, he doesn't do the other things
- 6:01Speaker 2: that you know, force him to be like a little
- 6:03Speaker 2: bit better of a floor And it's a first rounder
- 6:07Speaker 2: and I'm I'm concerned, Like he's you know, he'll be
- 6:10Speaker 2: what twenty nine next season, and so that's you're starting
- 6:14Speaker 2: to get to that point of like man injuries have
- 6:17Speaker 2: have like had of lingered for him in the past,
- 6:19Speaker 2: and it feels like it's this one is more concerning.
- 6:22Speaker 2: So I especially when I'm in it, I am this
- 6:25Speaker 2: is the perfect thing to be, like, Hey, I think
- 6:27Speaker 2: this guy's gonna be great next year, we don't loose
- 6:29Speaker 2: the first rounder. But I can't wait around because I'm
- 6:33Speaker 2: going for it this year. Like you can make a
- 6:34Speaker 2: great sales job here and pick up a good piece
- 6:37Speaker 2: the rest of the way through. But even if I
- 6:39Speaker 2: wasn't quite an like and I had a good price,
- 6:41Speaker 2: I'd be kind of testing that market right now. I'm
- 6:44Speaker 2: not saying some pennies and the dollar, but you know,
- 6:46Speaker 2: give me three quarters and I call it good.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Yeah, No, I think that's totally fair. The other thing
- 6:50Speaker 1: to keep in mind is, you know, if you go
- 6:53Speaker 1: out to your league and you're trying to shop your
- 6:55Speaker 1: don and you're just met with crickets and silence, keep
- 6:59Speaker 1: it keep an eye on, I would say, when he
- 7:01Speaker 1: does return, just that bat speed, just to see where
- 7:04Speaker 1: it clocks in to determine, you know, do you maybe
- 7:07Speaker 1: even need to lower that price from seventy five cents
- 7:09Speaker 1: on the dollar to fifty or lower to be able
- 7:12Speaker 1: to just extract some value if it is looking like
- 7:15Speaker 1: that hand is becoming something that could round into a
- 7:19Speaker 1: twenty twenty six issue. So just something keep in mind.
- 7:21Speaker 1: I would say, with your don I alluded to this injury.
- 7:24Speaker 1: We're gonna stick in Houston for this one because same pattern.
- 7:28Speaker 1: They caught it within a couple of days, probably because
- 7:30Speaker 1: like they knew they couldn't mess this one up in Houston.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Is Jeremy Pania got beamed in the ribs over the weekend,
- 7:36Speaker 1: went in for an initial X ray. They said no
- 7:40Speaker 1: significant damage, but they were sending him for more imaging,
- 7:43Speaker 1: more testing. That more imaging, more testing, kicked back a
- 7:46Speaker 1: cracked ribcage, you know, a broken rib within where he
- 7:51Speaker 1: got hit, which I mean this also confounds me. I
- 7:54Speaker 1: don't know how this keeps happening, considering like this happened
- 7:57Speaker 1: with Orvin Carroll too, that like what type of imaging
- 8:01Speaker 1: do they have where they can't pick this up? Or
- 8:03Speaker 1: is it like such a fine break where like if
- 8:08Speaker 1: you and I like this happened to us, they would
- 8:10Speaker 1: call it a bone bruise and kick us out of
- 8:12Speaker 1: the emergency room and tell us to go just like
- 8:15Speaker 1: take some Adville or something. Is it that kind of level?
- 8:19Speaker 1: Do you think or do you think there is something
- 8:21Speaker 1: wrong with the Houston astros here in terms of this
- 8:24Speaker 1: injury pattern, because Jeremy Penna has been MVP candidate any
- 8:30Speaker 1: other year non Judge and Cal Rowley running four point
- 8:35Speaker 1: one war He's clocked in as one of the most
- 8:38Speaker 1: valuable shortstops within our player Raider. He's clocked in number four.
- 8:41Speaker 1: He's out of Francisco Lindor right there with a three
- 8:45Speaker 1: twenty two, three seventy eight, four eighty nine slash line,
- 8:49Speaker 1: eleven homers, fifteen stolen bases. It's been a monster year
- 8:53Speaker 1: for Penia. So, yeah, what are you doing with Penia
- 8:56Speaker 1: and anything? You think that this speaks to on a
- 8:59Speaker 1: larger level for the Houston Astros or just a bunch
- 9:02Speaker 1: of coincidences.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I do. There's something in the water
- 9:07Speaker 2: there in Houston right now, at least on the medical staff,
- 9:10Speaker 2: and I I'm concerned, Like I look at this, and
- 9:14Speaker 2: to your point, like Corporate Carrol a different team, I'd
- 9:17Speaker 2: be like, ah, like it was so minor. They didn't
- 9:19Speaker 2: pick it up like when not. But it's not just that,
- 9:21Speaker 2: But they also didn't seem to announce like a time
- 9:23Speaker 2: frame or anything else with it, which to me, if
- 9:27Speaker 2: if it truly is the bone bruised version, if it's
- 9:30Speaker 2: just a very hairline crack or something like that. They're
- 9:33Speaker 2: saying it's a hairline crack. A few weeks, you know,
- 9:37Speaker 2: get some rest, and he'll be back. We just want
- 9:39Speaker 2: to be to be healthy. They're not saying that. So
- 9:41Speaker 2: to me, there's like red flag upon red flags here.
- 9:45Speaker 2: So I'm I'm not entirely thrilled with what I'm seeing here,
- 9:52Speaker 2: and I'm I'm probably you know, looking to shop pain
- 9:56Speaker 2: you to see if somebody else believes it's just a
- 9:58Speaker 2: short term thing. And the other side of it is
- 10:02Speaker 2: if you actually look at paina under the covers, like,
- 10:06Speaker 2: I don't know how much of this is real. Like
- 10:08Speaker 2: the guy can run, the guy could hit for a
- 10:10Speaker 2: decent average, The power I think is a little bit overstated.
- 10:14Speaker 2: I think that you know, the Crawford boxes are helping
- 10:16Speaker 2: him a little bit more like he's just gone full
- 10:18Speaker 2: pole heavy and so you know, that's you know, who
- 10:22Speaker 2: he had generally has always been. But that's what's driving
- 10:26Speaker 2: a lot of these these homers. And there there's they're
- 10:33Speaker 2: not like make it out mile a lot. He's got
- 10:35Speaker 2: a lot of just barely stuck out type of things here.
- 10:38Speaker 2: So I'm just not overly sold on paina long term,
- 10:42Speaker 2: and with the Astros bumbling around the injury injury list here,
- 10:47Speaker 2: I'd rather look elsewhere. And my worry is the rest
- 10:51Speaker 2: of the leagues can do the same.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so too that I think the rest
- 10:56Speaker 1: of your league will see this fantacy trade coming from
- 10:59Speaker 1: a mile off if you trying to move Paenia and
- 11:01Speaker 1: capitalize on that upper tier value. He's also I think
- 11:04Speaker 1: going to already be like lined up for a bust,
- 11:07Speaker 1: kind of like evaluation going to next year. But I
- 11:10Speaker 1: mean I'm intrigued just because he does really work those
- 11:13Speaker 1: Crawford boxes. I think that like, if you find yourself
- 11:16Speaker 1: in a league where nobody else wants Jeremy Panha, then
- 11:21Speaker 1: I'm happy to have him as my starting shortstop. It's
- 11:23Speaker 1: just kind of not something that I'm usually seeking out,
- 11:26Speaker 1: But I think you probably get a couple more years
- 11:28Speaker 1: of Painia where they are pretty.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Incredible.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Maybe not like this Francisco Lindor level, but you know,
- 11:36Speaker 1: a notch down, you know, back end of a top
- 11:39Speaker 1: ten of shortstops out there, so very very usable piece
- 11:42Speaker 1: within our fantasy realm. So next injury, we have this
- 11:47Speaker 1: one kind of hit out of nowhere. This afternoon and
- 11:51Speaker 1: when I'd originally drafted the rundown, I had to go
- 11:53Speaker 1: back and update it. We've got Atlanta pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach
- 11:57Speaker 1: hitting the eye out with a broken elbo that he
- 12:01Speaker 1: like induced himself just through pitching. So we haven't gotten
- 12:05Speaker 1: great specifics on this because it is such fresh news
- 12:07Speaker 1: out of Atlanta. In turn, it looks like roster resource
- 12:11Speaker 1: has Hearston Waldroup taken over for the rotation spot. It also,
- 12:16Speaker 1: if anything, Didefuente's struggled tonight but looked sharper than he
- 12:22Speaker 1: had in the first couple of outings, which I like
- 12:24Speaker 1: for Fuentis. We've talked about him plenty, but let's focus
- 12:27Speaker 1: on Schwellenbach here. It's been a really fantastic season for
- 12:32Speaker 1: him so far. You know, he was up to a
- 12:35Speaker 1: three h nine ERA in his seventeen starts. But this
- 12:38Speaker 1: is what I was always worried about with Schwellenbach is
- 12:40Speaker 1: that when he came through the amateur system at Nebraska,
- 12:44Speaker 1: here's a shortstop slash closer underwinter. Tommy John Surgery hasn't
- 12:49Speaker 1: really had a great repertoire of building up starting pitching injuries,
- 12:54Speaker 1: and I think that's maybe a little innings, starting pitching innings,
- 12:59Speaker 1: and that's where this injury ended up coming from. So
- 13:02Speaker 1: what are you doing with Schwellenbach in both just single
- 13:06Speaker 1: season leagues here for US twenty twenty five and more
- 13:09Speaker 1: long term keeper situations.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean this is a tough one because I
- 13:14Speaker 2: I oddly feel better about this one than I do
- 13:16Speaker 2: bout anything happened with Houston. And I don't know what,
- 13:22Speaker 2: you know, I shouldn't say that with a picture with
- 13:24Speaker 2: an broken elbow, but it's you know, it seems like
- 13:28Speaker 2: it's really their treating is a minor issue saying four
- 13:31Speaker 2: weeks things like that, and Atlanta has always been a
- 13:34Speaker 2: relatively transparent club and relatively pretty good at saying what's
- 13:39Speaker 2: actually going on. So I feel a little bit better
- 13:41Speaker 2: about that, you know, It's it is a little concerning
- 13:44Speaker 2: from all, maybe more of a long term perspective of just,
- 13:48Speaker 2: you know, how well does he hold up? Because I
- 13:50Speaker 2: think I said the one comment I saw him saying
- 13:52Speaker 2: something about like he's added velosity this year, and he
- 13:56Speaker 2: thinks that that might have been part of it. Is
- 13:57Speaker 2: just adding that velocity put that extra stress on the elbow, Like, well,
- 14:01Speaker 2: it's kind of what we want you to do. You're
- 14:03Speaker 2: more effective when you have more velocity, and those things
- 14:05Speaker 2: kind of go together, and so like it does give
- 14:08Speaker 2: me a little pause, like the thing is worth pitching
- 14:12Speaker 2: like any picture, Like he's still young, he's twenty five,
- 14:15Speaker 2: Like I think he's you know, even if I get
- 14:16Speaker 2: O two three really good solid season that you're probably
- 14:19Speaker 2: happy in the dynasty league just with the fickle nature
- 14:21Speaker 2: of the position. So I'm I'm hopeful he's back this year,
- 14:26Speaker 2: but I think it's like long long term, maybe not
- 14:27Speaker 2: the next year or two. I think that is a little,
- 14:30Speaker 2: you know, red flag to kind of keep an eye on.
- 14:33Speaker 2: I would let this one be the one that, you know,
- 14:35Speaker 2: breaks the camel's back. But if this like this kind
- 14:38Speaker 2: of thing, like I would say a wear and tear
- 14:40Speaker 2: injury keeps kind of seeming to occur with him, especially
- 14:43Speaker 2: in that elbow, then I would probably be looking to
- 14:47Speaker 2: move him on. The thing is, he's just so valuable
- 14:50Speaker 2: right now and from a pure stuff perspective, like I
- 14:55Speaker 2: feel like he's one of the more trusted pitchers in
- 14:57Speaker 2: the league right now. So it's hard to really move
- 15:00Speaker 2: on from from an injury risk perspective until you really
- 15:03Speaker 2: see is this truly just kind of like a play
- 15:05Speaker 2: it safe with our young ace or if is it
- 15:08Speaker 2: truly like an enduring thing?
- 15:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I think my concern level or level of concern
- 15:15Speaker 1: here is much higher than yours. This is not a
- 15:20Speaker 1: profile that I ever thought would last. As you know,
- 15:23Speaker 1: I have him in our auto neew league where I
- 15:25Speaker 1: kept him.
- 15:26Speaker 2: But mostly you can trade him to me if you'd
- 15:28Speaker 2: like to. I'll take him.
- 15:29Speaker 1: I mean I might if you if you want to
- 15:31Speaker 1: do it, because this is not the type of injury
- 15:34Speaker 1: I like to see. Like period, if you're if your elbow,
- 15:37Speaker 1: the bones in your elbow are breaking under the stress
- 15:40Speaker 1: that you're putting them on. Putting on them as a
- 15:42Speaker 1: starting pitcher not good. You know, I was just looking
- 15:46Speaker 1: it up and it's it's not fun to draw this comparison.
- 15:53Speaker 1: It smells a lot like Chris Medlin to me, where
- 15:57Speaker 1: it just doesn't work. There's not enough like history of
- 16:00Speaker 1: long and heavy workloads to be a starter. I think,
- 16:04Speaker 1: you know, if they transitioned Swollenbach into some sort of
- 16:07Speaker 1: reliever role, he might be able to do this in
- 16:09Speaker 1: shorter bursts. But I just don't know if he can
- 16:12Speaker 1: hold up to this where he didn't do it for
- 16:15Speaker 1: so long throughout the amateur level at college, and then
- 16:18Speaker 1: you can see it in his minor league kind of
- 16:20Speaker 1: come through for Schwellenbach because they were already bathing him
- 16:24Speaker 1: after he had that elbow surgery back in college, and
- 16:28Speaker 1: we're trying to slowly stretch him out. I think we've
- 16:30Speaker 1: reached a point where like it's just not maybe gonna
- 16:35Speaker 1: fully work. If you're gonna break your elbow during the
- 16:37Speaker 1: middle of the season. It's to me, honestly more concerning
- 16:41Speaker 1: in terms of like a red flag than any sort
- 16:45Speaker 1: of UCL injury, because like those, it just seems like
- 16:48Speaker 1: the rubber band snaps, you repair the rubber band. This
- 16:51Speaker 1: is like a structural I'm not sure if the bones
- 16:54Speaker 1: around Schwellenbach's arm can handle this. So I am highly concerned.
- 17:00Speaker 1: I think it's a great profile and I love it,
- 17:01Speaker 1: and it's gonna tent me whenever it's healthy. But I
- 17:04Speaker 1: don't know if we're ever gonna get more than like
- 17:06Speaker 1: one hundred, one hundred and twenty inning burst of Schwellenbach
- 17:09Speaker 1: at any point.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Yeah, this this and I think this goes to I
- 17:15Speaker 2: think we've talked about before on the podcast being comfortable
- 17:17Speaker 2: in the who you are as a fantasy owner and
- 17:20Speaker 2: lean into that. Look at my pitching staff and at
- 17:23Speaker 2: new it is slittered with guys like this, and it's
- 17:26Speaker 2: it's it's I'm gonna hit like one out of two
- 17:29Speaker 2: and I'm gonna be thrilled. But it doesn't you have
- 17:32Speaker 2: to be comfortable with that kind of strategy, you know,
- 17:36Speaker 2: the actually the guy that it kind of to a degree,
- 17:39Speaker 2: Schwellenbach makes me think of like early career Noah Cindergarden
- 17:45Speaker 2: before he had all the issues and you know, really,
- 17:49Speaker 2: you know, not quite the same velocity, but that's what
- 17:52Speaker 2: ended up being the issue for Cinderguard is still I
- 17:55Speaker 2: think there's a little more control Swellenbach, maybe a little
- 17:57Speaker 2: less velocity, but at the end end of the day,
- 18:01Speaker 2: relatively similar profiles, good ground ball guys, good control, high octane,
- 18:07Speaker 2: and then an injury happens and it starts to drop
- 18:10Speaker 2: off that velocity, which makes all those things a little
- 18:14Speaker 2: bit more manageable to take care of from a hitting perspective.
- 18:16Speaker 2: So that like, that's the like em if you're right,
- 18:20Speaker 2: that's what I'm looking at, And cinder Guard wasn't really
- 18:24Speaker 2: that much valuable, Like a twenty two, twenty three year
- 18:26Speaker 2: old seasons. So we'll see. But I'm I'm all drink
- 18:31Speaker 2: the kool aid for at least till the next next
- 18:34Speaker 2: go round.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Yeah, And I'm I think what you bring up is
- 18:37Speaker 1: a fair point that, like, you can't ever be walking
- 18:40Speaker 1: out of drafts at the end of the season or
- 18:42Speaker 1: at the beginning of the season and thinking that Schwambach
- 18:45Speaker 1: can be year one or two. I think it's what
- 18:47Speaker 1: it is that if you're counting on him as more
- 18:48Speaker 1: of like a three four starter in your staff, so
- 18:52Speaker 1: like in a snake draft, it's gonna be really hard
- 18:54Speaker 1: to get that value. So he's not gonna fall to you.
- 18:57Speaker 1: But maybe he does in an auction or a keeper situation,
- 19:00Speaker 1: then yeah, roll with it. But you can't. He's not
- 19:02Speaker 1: one of those guys. I think this is what I
- 19:04Speaker 1: had like issue with on the Cole Reagan's price at
- 19:07Speaker 1: the draft table this past year. It's the same sort
- 19:10Speaker 1: of thing. It's not someone who I feel comfortable moving
- 19:14Speaker 1: up to that level of reliability that you need out
- 19:17Speaker 1: of a one or two fantasy starter where you do
- 19:20Speaker 1: need to pin them to your roster and really like
- 19:25Speaker 1: count on them making it through a season, you know,
- 19:28Speaker 1: except for you know, a Tommy John or something, but
- 19:30Speaker 1: like not something like this.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Yeah, this is just we can go around round because
- 19:35Speaker 2: I've also got it owns Cole Reagans. So this just
- 19:37Speaker 2: goes perfectly too. Like like I said, the different strategies
- 19:40Speaker 2: because you're I think you're right if your trust him
- 19:42Speaker 2: as number one. That that that's where you're going wrong.
- 19:45Speaker 2: If you're buying him in bulk, buying those guys in
- 19:50Speaker 2: bulk and the threes and the fours and the fives,
- 19:52Speaker 2: and you're like, I know something's not gonna work out here,
- 19:54Speaker 2: but I also know my catch lightning the bottle, and
- 19:57Speaker 2: that might win my league. That's that's a viable st strategy.
- 20:01Speaker 2: It also might blow up on you like it does
- 20:03Speaker 2: to me at times.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, and I'm not even like against your strategy.
- 20:06Speaker 1: I'm just saying, like, you got to prepare yourself for that.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you gotta play these guys, and you got
- 20:12Speaker 1: to play it against the value of what the rest
- 20:14Speaker 1: of your league is doing. You know, you weren't buying
- 20:17Speaker 1: these guys at the draft table, you know what I mean?
- 20:19Speaker 2: At full this this is very much a dynasty ish strategy.
- 20:24Speaker 2: That you can play, which is if I can invest
- 20:26Speaker 2: in guys with ace upside for a quarter of the price. Yes,
- 20:30Speaker 2: and I might have to cast one or two off
- 20:32Speaker 2: over time because wenot as long as I'm netting out above,
- 20:36Speaker 2: it's viable file options.
- 20:38Speaker 1: So yeah, okay, I think that's all fair. Well, speaking
- 20:41Speaker 1: of Cole Reagans, we have another rotator cuff felling a
- 20:44Speaker 1: starting pitcher in our pool. Tyler Molly, the right hander
- 20:49Speaker 1: from the Texas Rangers, been on the IL for a
- 20:52Speaker 1: hot minute since mid June, but has been transferred to
- 20:55Speaker 1: the sixty day IL because they found a rotator cuff strain.
- 20:59Speaker 1: They've that he's not going to be back before the
- 21:01Speaker 1: trade deadline, which is really bad for the Rangers, who
- 21:05Speaker 1: are sorry to fade out of the race. They're I mean,
- 21:07Speaker 1: they're behind the Angels at this point too, which isn't great.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Molly would have been a great person to put on
- 21:13Speaker 1: the trade block, considering he is a free agent after
- 21:15Speaker 1: this year, and it's been one of those years where
- 21:19Speaker 1: like everybody's been waiting for him to unwind because it
- 21:22Speaker 1: is a two thirty four ra through seventy seven innings
- 21:24Speaker 1: for Mali, but it's only come with a six and
- 21:27Speaker 1: a half K nine the FIP, I mean it's a
- 21:29Speaker 1: full run at three thirty six higher. But you also
- 21:32Speaker 1: look at the x FIP four to thirty four. You've
- 21:36Speaker 1: also got an XCRA a four seventeen. So everything was
- 21:39Speaker 1: lining up where there was a lot of regression coming
- 21:41Speaker 1: back for MOLLI one thing rates and Barrels brought this
- 21:45Speaker 1: up this past week. Texas plays really really pitcher friendly
- 21:49Speaker 1: nowadays compared to the rest of league. That might have
- 21:51Speaker 1: been a factor here with Molly as well as you
- 21:53Speaker 1: also look like some reason, Patrick Corbyn's like a viable
- 21:58Speaker 1: picture in the major leagues right now for I think
- 22:00Speaker 1: the same reason. But what are you doing anywhere with Molly?
- 22:04Speaker 1: Because I mean I think at this point, if you
- 22:05Speaker 1: had him stashed, you can move on. But any reason
- 22:09Speaker 1: that you're you think that he might be worth putting
- 22:12Speaker 1: on your roster still.
- 22:14Speaker 2: No, I think at this point, you know, his value
- 22:18Speaker 2: was innings and pitching for a pretty pretty decent team.
- 22:23Speaker 2: They could support him, and he was running on some
- 22:25Speaker 2: luck at this point. Rotator Cuff not loving it. You
- 22:30Speaker 2: know he's gonna be shut down for a decent decent
- 22:33Speaker 2: while you cast them off because he wasn't an anchor
- 22:38Speaker 2: to your team. You're much better taking that spot, that
- 22:41Speaker 2: roster spot, and dedicating it to another guy that might
- 22:45Speaker 2: be making a break for it, like like right now,
- 22:47Speaker 2: like Mike Soroka's guy I'm really interested in. He seems
- 22:50Speaker 2: to be kind of tinkering around the edges doing some
- 22:52Speaker 2: things like finding those kind of guys that might turn
- 22:57Speaker 2: into something or is just as valuable as what you
- 22:59Speaker 2: got with here. So I'll let him go. I'm setting
- 23:02Speaker 2: them off in the sunset.
- 23:03Speaker 1: Yep. I think that's all totally fair, all right. Next
- 23:06Speaker 1: injury we have was kind of a gross one with
- 23:09Speaker 1: Griffin Canning of the New York Mets. Was you know,
- 23:13Speaker 1: coming off the mound trying to get into a fielding
- 23:16Speaker 1: play looked like an inkle injury, and initially that's how
- 23:21Speaker 1: it was reported, but if you watch the video, it
- 23:24Speaker 1: was pretty clearly an achilles like right off the bat,
- 23:28Speaker 1: the same sort of thing that happened to Halliburton in
- 23:31Speaker 1: the NBA Finals.
- 23:33Speaker 3: Like this, Haliburton, Yes, that it's uh, there's kind of
- 23:38Speaker 3: like an epidemic going on out there in terms of
- 23:41Speaker 3: just achilles blowing out all across all sorts of sports
- 23:44Speaker 3: Aaron Rodgers a couple of years ago.
- 23:46Speaker 1: I think there is like something to you like modern
- 23:48Speaker 1: sports really do push the human form to its pretty
- 23:52Speaker 1: like maximum level. Gryffin Canning is evidence of that. It
- 23:57Speaker 1: had been a much better season until the past month
- 24:00Speaker 1: or so, where the walks were really starting to catch
- 24:02Speaker 1: up to him. He had a four point one walk
- 24:05Speaker 1: per nine over his seventy six and the third innings
- 24:08Speaker 1: will be out for the rest of the season here.
- 24:10Speaker 1: So the focus in the Mets, especially considering they are
- 24:14Speaker 1: well except for this most recent kind of stretch where
- 24:16Speaker 1: they've really been playing like absolute crap is you've got
- 24:21Speaker 1: a lot of wins on the line for starting pitchers.
- 24:23Speaker 1: So they have brought up Blade Tidwell, who continues to
- 24:28Speaker 1: look just like a reliever to me, like he can't
- 24:30Speaker 1: get through orders more or lineups more than really. Like
- 24:34Speaker 1: once saw it again tonight he pitched and was doing
- 24:37Speaker 1: okay his first go through, but then ended up giving
- 24:40Speaker 1: up a couple of taters and just like I said,
- 24:43Speaker 1: the stuff will play up in the bullpen for Tidwell.
- 24:45Speaker 1: So there's quite a few options molling about in that
- 24:49Speaker 1: minor league system for the Mets. Between Jonah Tong, and
- 24:53Speaker 1: you've also got your boy Brandon Sprote, and you know
- 24:59Speaker 1: other options down there as well, So they've got plenty
- 25:02Speaker 1: of players to go to. I actually kind of like
- 25:05Speaker 1: Noa McLain myself a little bit. But any of those
- 25:09Speaker 1: really stand out to you where you would be prioritizing
- 25:11Speaker 1: one of them over the other, maybe in some fab
- 25:14Speaker 1: bidding this weekend.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I think if I'm gonna pick one of those
- 25:18Speaker 2: over the others, it's you actually went right there. I
- 25:21Speaker 2: think it's Nolan McLain. I think Sprote has taken a
- 25:25Speaker 2: step back this season and they need to figure out
- 25:28Speaker 2: what that is. I think Tong might be the best
- 25:31Speaker 2: of the bunch, but he's still you know, he's younger,
- 25:34Speaker 2: he's still got more time to go. He's only had
- 25:38Speaker 2: a little bit of time and he's only fourteen starts
- 25:41Speaker 2: at the Double A level, and so I think you
- 25:46Speaker 2: want to give him a little bit more chance to
- 25:49Speaker 2: develop again. He might be the most dominant guy, but
- 25:51Speaker 2: I think Nolan McClain is your guy that you go
- 25:55Speaker 2: go with here. He's twenty three, almost twenty four, solid,
- 26:00Speaker 2: solid down the farm's got two twenty five era which
- 26:04Speaker 2: he's performing probably a little bit better than than his
- 26:06Speaker 2: actual talent level. But because of that, he's the kind
- 26:09Speaker 2: of guy that is not like I don't think he
- 26:11Speaker 2: has like unbelievable ceiling. I think he's got mid rotation potential.
- 26:15Speaker 2: And so that's the guy that you are comfortable bringing
- 26:18Speaker 2: up and seeing what you got, and the risk is
- 26:21Speaker 2: as large as pushing a guy like Tong or guy
- 26:24Speaker 2: Sprote who's struggled in their development. I think Nolan McLain
- 26:28Speaker 2: has done what he needs to from a development perspective.
- 26:32Speaker 2: It's not his first go around the upper miners. He's
- 26:34Speaker 2: had you know, a few seasons there. Uh. Just last
- 26:37Speaker 2: year he got you know, one hundred and ten innings pitched,
- 26:39Speaker 2: and so he's still got probably another good sixty seventy
- 26:43Speaker 2: innings in the arm this year left to go. So
- 26:45Speaker 2: if i'm if i'm prioritizing won, it's Nolan McClain Jonah
- 26:48Speaker 2: Toong probably long term.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Okay, Yeah, I think I like that too. All right,
- 26:53Speaker 1: let's get into a couple of hammy injuries in the
- 26:55Speaker 1: al centry Al Central. First, we have outfielder Slash dh
- 27:01Speaker 1: from the Detroit Tigers carry Carpenter going down with a
- 27:05Speaker 1: hammy strain, and it's been a solid season I would
- 27:08Speaker 1: say for him, not fantastic, not exactly like the worst
- 27:12Speaker 1: in the world, but he has been stuck in a
- 27:14Speaker 1: strongside platoon only two hundred eighty plate appearances, over which
- 27:18Speaker 1: he has slashed two fifty seven, two eighty five, four
- 27:22Speaker 1: ninety four with sixteen bombs. The other is Luis Robert
- 27:26Speaker 1: Junior from the Chicago White Sox. Not great timing for
- 27:30Speaker 1: the trade deadline here for the White Sox as Robert
- 27:33Speaker 1: goes down with a hammy injury. Things have been absolutely
- 27:38Speaker 1: dreadful for him this season. Over two hundred and eighty
- 27:40Speaker 1: five plate appearances of his own, he's gone one eighty five,
- 27:45Speaker 1: two seventy three thirteen. That is not great. That's a
- 27:49Speaker 1: sixty three WRC.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Plus.
- 27:51Speaker 1: He's still had value in fantasy because he has twenty
- 27:54Speaker 1: two steals eight homers as well, so a little bit
- 27:57Speaker 1: of pop, but has pretty much become like a stolen
- 28:00Speaker 1: base only play at this point. What are you doing
- 28:04Speaker 1: with both of these guys because they both have pretty
- 28:06Speaker 1: sordid injury pass now at this point, like they are
- 28:11Speaker 1: always set for an yearly annual il trip or two
- 28:15Speaker 1: because and it's always soft tissue for both of these,
- 28:17Speaker 1: which is not exactly great for long term. But if
- 28:20Speaker 1: I had to stick one on your roster for the
- 28:22Speaker 1: rest of the season, make you use one of these spots?
- 28:25Speaker 1: You going with Carpenter, Robert.
- 28:27Speaker 2: This is so such an easy, easy question. It's Carpenter
- 28:31Speaker 2: all day, no question about it. Like that, that's a
- 28:34Speaker 2: guy that you know exactly when you're gonna play him,
- 28:37Speaker 2: and you know exactly what you're gonna get. He's he's
- 28:40Speaker 2: an above average hitter in his platoon and he's gonna
- 28:44Speaker 2: hit for power in the middle of that lineup. Robert
- 28:47Speaker 2: like he might go oh for the next week and
- 28:50Speaker 2: the seal three bases and then pop a war home
- 28:52Speaker 2: runs like the next week, and then go oh for
- 28:54Speaker 2: the next month like he like it's it's just so
- 28:58Speaker 2: unreliable as there. We all know the talent's incredible, uh
- 29:02Speaker 2: with lous Robert, but like he is, he is completely
- 29:06Speaker 2: lost at the plate. So like, I'm going to take
- 29:09Speaker 2: the new even though Carver's got the tune issues and
- 29:12Speaker 2: things like that. You know, I don't love the injury here,
- 29:15Speaker 2: but like when he's healthy, which is not all the time,
- 29:18Speaker 2: you know, what she got. I think Robert, like, I'm
- 29:22Speaker 2: not even thrown put him in the lineup if he
- 29:24Speaker 2: is healthy, like I'm worried about that.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's all very fair. And on top
- 29:29Speaker 1: of it too, like if this does really sap Robert
- 29:34Speaker 1: to where he can't be traded, I don't know what
- 29:37Speaker 1: his motivation to come back for the rest of the
- 29:39Speaker 1: season really is. He kind of gets into that shady
- 29:42Speaker 1: territory that we've seen of maybe like yon Mancata to
- 29:45Speaker 1: where the White Sox just maybe they don't want him
- 29:48Speaker 1: to come back either because they want to see how
- 29:49Speaker 1: some of these other outfielders might be able to handle
- 29:52Speaker 1: the majors. So I'm with you, you've got to be
- 29:54Speaker 1: stashateway carry bonds. All right, we have a third handy injury.
- 29:58Speaker 1: I probably maybe should have group this guy in with
- 30:01Speaker 1: those other two because you could use the roster spot
- 30:03Speaker 1: on someone uncovered last week, Jordan Lawler. This one does
- 30:07Speaker 1: sound more significant than the Carpenter or Robert Ones, which
- 30:11Speaker 1: sounded relatively mild. But the phrasing the Diamondbacks are using
- 30:15Speaker 1: around this injury, for Lawler is missing several weeks, which
- 30:19Speaker 1: then it's probably pushing you to almost to a mid
- 30:23Speaker 1: August return, because if they're reble to shut him down
- 30:27Speaker 1: get him ramped back up. The Diamondbacks also at that
- 30:31Speaker 1: point might have sold. They're big league roster, so there
- 30:35Speaker 1: might be you know, a spot at third base with
- 30:38Speaker 1: Aohenio Suarez being on the trade block for the d Backs,
- 30:44Speaker 1: We're still stashing away Lawler, even with this hammy injury
- 30:48Speaker 1: that he's gone is going through.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he's he's still worth the stash, and
- 30:55Speaker 2: I think it's because you can see a better path
- 30:58Speaker 2: the plane time with low pressure, which is probably exactly
- 31:01Speaker 2: what he needs after struggling in his few stints here
- 31:03Speaker 2: in the majors. It is disappointing to see because like
- 31:06Speaker 2: I thought he was gonna be a guy like up
- 31:08Speaker 2: in a week or two, trying to like press press things,
- 31:11Speaker 2: especially as they were deciding am I selling or not.
- 31:15Speaker 2: I think this actually makes it maybe more likely the
- 31:16Speaker 2: dbacs are going to sell, and so, yeah, this is disappointing.
- 31:22Speaker 2: I don't want to label him injury prone yet, but
- 31:25Speaker 2: it does seem like he's been a little bit banged
- 31:28Speaker 2: up more than we would like. And you know, I
- 31:31Speaker 2: think they're saying minimum one month right now, So you
- 31:34Speaker 2: know what you said mid August, like that might even
- 31:36Speaker 2: be generous, Like it feels like it could be more
- 31:39Speaker 2: of a September time frame before we're talking Jordan Lawler again.
- 31:42Speaker 1: Yeah, it's also like one of those things where it's
- 31:45Speaker 1: almost starting to get a little Kobe Mayo ish too,
- 31:47Speaker 1: where the injuries and the lack of action from the
- 31:51Speaker 1: Dbacks speaks a lot to I think what Lawler's opportunity is.
- 31:55Speaker 1: And so it's going to be a fascinating situation as
- 31:58Speaker 1: we watch this unfold. I think, yeah, I think you've
- 32:01Speaker 1: nailed it on Lawler. It will be a really important
- 32:04Speaker 1: stretch to see what he can do with this injury,
- 32:07Speaker 1: to shake that injury prone label possibly and also like
- 32:11Speaker 1: see if he can do this for an entire season
- 32:13Speaker 1: at the big league level. So with that, that wraps
- 32:17Speaker 1: up the sad injury news for getting into. I almost
- 32:20Speaker 1: opened with this because this made me so happy.
- 32:23Speaker 2: I will sit this segment out. I know this is
- 32:26Speaker 2: this is all you.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Because we have big news in Colorado. They've finally done't
- 32:31Speaker 1: They've called up my boy yan kill Fernandez because when
- 32:36Speaker 1: I cut when did I cut him? I'm gonna look
- 32:38Speaker 1: that up real quick in our auto New League, because
- 32:39Speaker 1: I just ran into a roster crunch finally where I
- 32:42Speaker 1: had to cut him. And of course, what does yan
- 32:45Speaker 1: Kill Fernandez do when I cut him? After I've been
- 32:48Speaker 1: holding him since June twenty twenty three on and off,
- 32:52Speaker 1: trying to just like stash away this. You cut him
- 32:55Speaker 1: a little bit about ten days ago, Okay, so on
- 32:58Speaker 1: the twenty fourth. Yeah, and let's see since the twenty fourth,
- 33:01Speaker 1: because he went on an absolute monster tear over five
- 33:07Speaker 1: games after that. He popped three homers hit three thirty three,
- 33:11Speaker 1: including like just an absolute monster blast in Vegas. It
- 33:15Speaker 1: went out of the park in Vegas as like four
- 33:17Speaker 1: hundred and eighty feet deep. That's what kind of forced
- 33:20Speaker 1: this call up. Finally, the Colorado Rockies have woken up
- 33:24Speaker 1: to the fact that Sam Hilliard is not a major
- 33:27Speaker 1: league player. They cut him to make space on both
- 33:29Speaker 1: the forty man roster and twenty six man roster for Fernandez.
- 33:33Speaker 1: Looks like jan Kill should be in a strong side
- 33:35Speaker 1: platoon role while he's getting this opportunity. And man, it's
- 33:40Speaker 1: great to see him play because in person I love
- 33:43Speaker 1: him even more. He's like such a little like tank
- 33:46Speaker 1: shape and he wears the jersey pretty open. I'm still
- 33:51Speaker 1: really high on yan Kill Fernandez. Do you think I
- 33:54Speaker 1: get back to the point in our auditio league that
- 33:57Speaker 1: I can actually reauction him or is he gonna get
- 33:59Speaker 1: hoovered out from her knee? Me?
- 34:00Speaker 2: Oh no, you don't get that opportunity because because I
- 34:05Speaker 2: because you know this is I didn't do it. I
- 34:09Speaker 2: almost did, just pure spite. But you know, I think
- 34:13Speaker 2: it's one of those that it it goes, but it's
- 34:16Speaker 2: gonna go one of two ways. Right, It's either he's
- 34:18Speaker 2: gonna come up and he's gonna kind of make it
- 34:20Speaker 2: like Jordan Beck type of impact and like he's gonna
- 34:23Speaker 2: show like the Colorado airplays well with him and somebody's
- 34:27Speaker 2: gonna take the gamble, or he's gonna go over the
- 34:30Speaker 2: next like three weeks and get sent back down And
- 34:32Speaker 2: you're like, well, I'm not gonna auction him now. I
- 34:33Speaker 2: might as well wait till the next time. Like, I
- 34:36Speaker 2: just don't think they're gonna give him a shot to play,
- 34:40Speaker 2: And it'll be interesting to see to your point, like
- 34:42Speaker 2: how much does he get platooned they actually just give
- 34:44Speaker 2: him a full run. It's the Rockies. There's no reason
- 34:47Speaker 2: not to see what they truly have here. So uh,
- 34:50Speaker 2: it'll be it'll be fun to see the guy I
- 34:52Speaker 2: can hit that. There's no no question about that. It's
- 34:55Speaker 2: just how well is it gonna translate?
- 34:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean the one thing you're gonna have to
- 34:58Speaker 1: keep in mind too, is I I mean I covered
- 35:00Speaker 1: this pretty extensively in my piece this weekend. The Rockies
- 35:03Speaker 1: have maybe the best schedule for hitters of the entire
- 35:07Speaker 1: season coming up in July. They have a bunch of
- 35:09Speaker 1: games and cores, but then they their road series are
- 35:12Speaker 1: like at Sincy and at Boston, which are both hitters parks,
- 35:16Speaker 1: so lots of just great opportunities for the Rockies offense
- 35:20Speaker 1: and lineup to try to make up some ground. We
- 35:23Speaker 1: As I said, we're speaking on July. Second, it's part
- 35:26Speaker 1: way through jan kil Fernandez's MLB debut. First at bat
- 35:31Speaker 1: saw two pitches grounded out, the second pitch to the
- 35:34Speaker 1: to the pitcher.
- 35:35Speaker 2: So that's like the perfect MLB debut, You just roll
- 35:40Speaker 2: over the first one and think it out of the
- 35:41Speaker 2: way exactly.
- 35:43Speaker 1: So we'll see what Jan kill can do there in Colorado.
- 35:46Speaker 1: I want them to do great, but maybe not so
- 35:48Speaker 1: great that I've got there's no way I'm making it
- 35:51Speaker 1: three weeks.
- 35:52Speaker 2: No, there's not I got extra cash. I'll just I'll
- 35:57Speaker 2: just do it for fun.
- 35:58Speaker 1: And people are going to try trading back to me
- 36:00Speaker 1: for a king's ransom. It's kind of awful.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Do you want kill for Schwellenbach? Think about it. We'll talk,
- 36:08Speaker 2: we'll talk, we'll talk, Okay.
- 36:10Speaker 1: All right, Well, I mean you've just brought up swallanblock.
- 36:12Speaker 1: We're gonna go back to Atlanta because they did today
- 36:14Speaker 1: cut Alex Fred. You go to open up space for
- 36:17Speaker 1: Jerks and Profar, who's done with his suspension. Profar just
- 36:21Speaker 1: walking straight into a starting role there in Atlanta and
- 36:25Speaker 1: should hold it down to some assuming that he can't
- 36:28Speaker 1: doesn't get suspended again. Scrippy right in the middle. That
- 36:31Speaker 1: that's pretty solid order, although the back end of that
- 36:34Speaker 1: order in Atlanta is looks cooler on paper than it actually,
- 36:39Speaker 1: I mean name value of paper. Maybe not if you
- 36:42Speaker 1: don't just don't look at the stats of Ozzy Albi's
- 36:44Speaker 1: Michael Harris and Nick Allen behind him. But what are
- 36:49Speaker 1: you doing with Profar? Do you think he can be
- 36:51Speaker 1: anything down the stretch?
- 36:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, he was a guy I called out
- 36:54Speaker 2: my in my article this last week is a watch
- 36:57Speaker 2: for the top one hundred because you know, he if
- 36:59Speaker 2: he comes back when they when they said he was
- 37:02Speaker 2: you know when they when he was going to come back,
- 37:03Speaker 2: that the expectation was he was going to hit number
- 37:05Speaker 2: two in the lineup. He's actually hit number five night
- 37:08Speaker 2: and did hit a homer, and so you know that
- 37:10Speaker 2: that plays pretty well and it's very uh and he
- 37:14Speaker 2: was actually batting leadoff the before he went down. So
- 37:21Speaker 2: it's interesting to see. But if he's as long as
- 37:23Speaker 2: he's the top like half of that lineup, it's a
- 37:26Speaker 2: good spot to be. There's enough value with Kuna's and
- 37:29Speaker 2: the Olsen's and the Zunas, like you're you're gonna get
- 37:33Speaker 2: some production, whether it's RBIs runs, whatever it's going to be.
- 37:37Speaker 2: And I mean of all the things that we talk about,
- 37:39Speaker 2: like yeah, it's a it's a suspension, PD A suspension
- 37:42Speaker 2: like not like the greatest thing to come come back from.
- 37:45Speaker 2: But it's not an injury. It's it's it's not so
- 37:49Speaker 2: this would have been a guy that would one hundred
- 37:51Speaker 2: percent have been drafted valued. He hit twenty four bombs
- 37:54Speaker 2: last year total ten bases He's not going to be
- 37:57Speaker 2: a major stolen based threat. But you know, if you're
- 38:00Speaker 2: talking like a two sixty average pops ten homers, ten
- 38:06Speaker 2: to twelve homers and steals seven bases of the rest
- 38:08Speaker 2: of the way something like that, that's incredibly valuable. So
- 38:11Speaker 2: I think Profar as long as the Russ shakes off,
- 38:14Speaker 2: which I think it should, I'm probably gonna have him
- 38:16Speaker 2: in the top one hundred hitters, probably in the back
- 38:19Speaker 2: quarter before too long. And I just wanted to see,
- 38:22Speaker 2: you know, where he batted in the lineup and really
- 38:24Speaker 2: what was gonna take place there. But at this point
- 38:27Speaker 2: in the season, that's it's kind of like a free
- 38:28Speaker 2: trade because a lot of folks were just like forgotten
- 38:31Speaker 2: about him.
- 38:32Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think that's very fair. So, and it's
- 38:35Speaker 1: also one of those things where if he struggles, you
- 38:38Speaker 1: can just throw him right back into the waiver wirepool.
- 38:40Speaker 1: I don't think it's anything where that's like league winning.
- 38:43Speaker 1: It's more of like rounding out of winning roster sort
- 38:46Speaker 1: of production. Correct, All right, let's move on to Texas,
- 38:50Speaker 1: where we have Jake Berger returning from his oblique injury,
- 38:53Speaker 1: and to make room for him on the big league roster,
- 38:57Speaker 1: the Rangers sent down Josh Young. So when we went
- 38:59Speaker 1: in to our season previews, this is the reason I
- 39:03Speaker 1: had Josh Young as as a cell because like, I
- 39:06Speaker 1: just didn't like the profile. I didn't know that the
- 39:10Speaker 1: ball was gonna be less bouncy, because I think that
- 39:12Speaker 1: is what's costed him here too, where I think the
- 39:16Speaker 1: extra drag and the ball the bounced, the bounciness just
- 39:19Speaker 1: not quite being there is eating dudes like Joshung alive
- 39:22Speaker 1: where they were always not like super powerful, but enough
- 39:28Speaker 1: power to where you know, the old ball allowed the
- 39:30Speaker 1: game to play. And you can see just in his
- 39:34Speaker 1: home run per fly ball rate the way that that
- 39:36Speaker 1: has just eroded from twenty five percent in his rookie
- 39:40Speaker 1: year down to seventeen point eight percent to fifteen point
- 39:43Speaker 1: two percent, down to eleven point four percent this year.
- 39:46Speaker 1: Just not enough extra oomph, despite still hitting the ball
- 39:50Speaker 1: just about as hard, hitting just about the same barrel
- 39:53Speaker 1: rate a little bit down it's at eight point three percent,
- 39:56Speaker 1: but it's also a little I mean, the pole rate's
- 39:59Speaker 1: not that bad. The thirty nine percent poll rate. I
- 40:03Speaker 1: guess maybe that park is eating young to live too.
- 40:05Speaker 1: But we're also talking about a guy here, who is
- 40:09Speaker 1: twenty seven. He's losing this roster spot to Billy McKinny.
- 40:13Speaker 1: As part of the other reason that they're deciding to
- 40:16Speaker 1: keep Josh Smith at first base instead of moving him
- 40:18Speaker 1: back to left field, letting Billy McKenny play left field,
- 40:21Speaker 1: instead of putting Young out there, maybe they are going
- 40:24Speaker 1: to retool what he's doing a little bit, but it's
- 40:29Speaker 1: kind of starting to get to pooper. Get off the
- 40:31Speaker 1: potty time for Josh Young. What do you think?
- 40:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it is, like I really think he's
- 40:37Speaker 2: a very talented hitter. I do like when he came up,
- 40:39Speaker 2: like he looked like a solid hitter. You know, he
- 40:42Speaker 2: was a top ten draft pick. Like, there's definitely talent there,
- 40:47Speaker 2: but all the injury time that that's really cost him.
- 40:50Speaker 2: And I look at the profile and I think I've
- 40:54Speaker 2: started to adjust the way I look at a certain
- 40:57Speaker 2: type of hitter which does hit Josh Young, Which is
- 41:00Speaker 2: that hitter that's with power, what no walks in high strikeouts,
- 41:04Speaker 2: Like it's it's the guy that doesn't have plate discipline
- 41:07Speaker 2: and that has power, and that's such a volatile profile.
- 41:11Speaker 2: It can work, like you Heneo sores, it can work,
- 41:14Speaker 2: but Also, when you talk about volatility, who also shows
- 41:17Speaker 2: up on the meters you Heneo sous right, And so
- 41:20Speaker 2: I think that's kind of what we have here, is
- 41:23Speaker 2: that that profile can work, but it's very on very
- 41:26Speaker 2: thin ice, and if you just if things aren't going well,
- 41:31Speaker 2: you get off kilter a little bit, you have very
- 41:35Speaker 2: little fall back on and you're sent to the miners
- 41:37Speaker 2: packing because it's hard to maintain when your calling card
- 41:42Speaker 2: is hitting the ball to the ballpark, getting the runs
- 41:44Speaker 2: and RBIs from it in the middle of the lineup,
- 41:47Speaker 2: and when you're not doing the other little things around it.
- 41:50Speaker 2: If that falters at all, you're You're a zero on
- 41:53Speaker 2: the team. You're not useful at all. And so I
- 41:56Speaker 2: was actually I was actually looking through a guys that
- 42:00Speaker 2: kind of fit that like this year, and there are
- 42:03Speaker 2: some surprising names there that when I'm starting to look
- 42:06Speaker 2: at that and be like, hmmm, it's making me you know,
- 42:09Speaker 2: second guess Pete crol Armstrong is kind of fits into
- 42:13Speaker 2: that that bucket a little bit. Now he has the speed.
- 42:15Speaker 2: So I think that that, you know, is what cancels
- 42:17Speaker 2: him him out to a degree.
- 42:20Speaker 1: It's her home park too, especially the way that Wrigley
- 42:22Speaker 1: has been playing this year is for a left handed batter.
- 42:24Speaker 1: It's just been really boosting his profile.
- 42:28Speaker 2: Yeah, but then I started to look at some other
- 42:30Speaker 2: names and I'm like, oh, yeah, these are the kind
- 42:32Speaker 2: of guys that I'm a little concerned with, like the
- 42:34Speaker 2: Joe Adell's falling there and things like that logan O
- 42:37Speaker 2: Hoppy falls in there, Hunter Goodman falls in there, You're
- 42:42Speaker 2: Tascar Hernandez's fall in there, Trevor's story, Like there's these
- 42:46Speaker 2: guys that like have talent and if you don't have
- 42:48Speaker 2: a second piece, Like again I go to the story
- 42:50Speaker 2: like there's a second piece there with the speed, but
- 42:54Speaker 2: that profile is scary. And when I list those guys,
- 42:59Speaker 2: it's the kind of guys that they're gonna win leagues
- 43:02Speaker 2: at times, but they can also lose them. And that's
- 43:05Speaker 2: that's what you have to know that you're getting into
- 43:07Speaker 2: with this with this kind of kind of player. So yeah,
- 43:11Speaker 2: it's you just have no one to get off the train.
- 43:12Speaker 2: And I think the Rangers are trying to pull it
- 43:14Speaker 2: the reset button like a few teams have done, like
- 43:16Speaker 2: Tyler Fitzgerald for the Giants just gonna sit down in
- 43:18Speaker 2: a similar similar deer, he'll go go reset yourself up
- 43:21Speaker 2: Burgers himself. Yeah, I got activated, Uh did the same thing.
- 43:25Speaker 2: So I think they're hoping for lightning the model. But
- 43:28Speaker 2: when this profile is off, it's off bad.
- 43:31Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, And I mean I think part of it
- 43:33Speaker 1: too is like young might just need a different scenery too,
- 43:38Speaker 1: in terms of like I just don't know if he's
- 43:40Speaker 1: like a first division type of starter, you know what
- 43:42Speaker 1: I mean, Like, this is a guy who would anchor
- 43:46Speaker 1: first base for the Pittsburgh Pirates for.
- 43:48Speaker 2: A decade, exactly who I thought you were just saying.
- 43:50Speaker 2: You know this, this is like Pedro Alvarez all over again.
- 43:54Speaker 1: But like in Texas when they're trying to move up
- 43:57Speaker 1: the standings and have a lot of money investing in
- 43:59Speaker 1: the right It's not a guy that can just let
- 44:02Speaker 1: flail away at the big league level and hope he
- 44:05Speaker 1: puts it together. All right, Well, let's talk about one
- 44:08Speaker 1: more promotion. Your boy Colby Thomas from the Athletics got
- 44:13Speaker 1: called up this week and currently roster resource has him
- 44:16Speaker 1: in a short side platoon role, but he started both
- 44:19Speaker 1: of the games that he's already been up for because
- 44:22Speaker 1: the glove plays. We saw it in the first game
- 44:24Speaker 1: in his MLB debut where he just he has a cannon,
- 44:28Speaker 1: so just rifled out a dude at home against the
- 44:32Speaker 1: Rays where he did the classic like flip as you
- 44:35Speaker 1: throw to It's also like just a great baseball clip
- 44:39Speaker 1: because the one that's been shared around the internet, you
- 44:42Speaker 1: can't actually see the play at the plate because of
- 44:45Speaker 1: the angles in the minor league stadium. There's a dude
- 44:47Speaker 1: just blocking your view of the play at the plate,
- 44:51Speaker 1: So you have to take the UMP's word for it
- 44:53Speaker 1: that Colby Thomas gunned the runner down. But I think
- 44:57Speaker 1: this also might just be kind of spelling trouble for
- 45:01Speaker 1: Tyler Stalderstrom, who has been much rougher here in June.
- 45:05Speaker 1: If we have, if you haven't looked recently after that
- 45:08Speaker 1: great start with the one forty nine WRC plus in
- 45:11Speaker 1: April leaving the league in homers, you know, through the
- 45:14Speaker 1: end of April, I believe it has been a two sixteen,
- 45:18Speaker 1: three twenty seven, three oh seven. That's a three zero
- 45:21Speaker 1: seven slug Tyler Solderstrom while playing half of his games
- 45:26Speaker 1: in Sacramento through June. So it's he's certainly starting to
- 45:30Speaker 1: take more walks, but he's starting to maybe be a
- 45:33Speaker 1: little bit too passive. So what are you doing here
- 45:35Speaker 1: with Kolbe Thomas and Tyler Solderstrom is like, Thomas, is
- 45:39Speaker 1: this enough playing time to maybe start picking him up
- 45:41Speaker 1: in twelve and ten teamers or is it something where
- 45:44Speaker 1: you're still waiting a little bit.
- 45:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I think if you're in a more of a
- 45:49Speaker 2: dynasty keeper, I might take the gamble on Thomas right now.
- 45:53Speaker 2: I'm not convinced with the way they called him up
- 45:55Speaker 2: and the way they kind of shared the news that he's,
- 45:58Speaker 2: you know, gonna be fourth outfielder, like they did not
- 46:01Speaker 2: talk like he was gonna be a full time starter,
- 46:03Speaker 2: And so I think that keeps the the price down
- 46:06Speaker 2: a little bit. And I don't think that he's gonna
- 46:09Speaker 2: be taking Tylers holders From's jobs by by any means,
- 46:12Speaker 2: with how amazing he was and that for the you know,
- 46:15Speaker 2: first you know, half, first half, the half, first quarter
- 46:17Speaker 2: of the season, and so I think that that's going
- 46:21Speaker 2: to kind of keep Thomas's value in check to start.
- 46:25Speaker 2: So I'm willing to watch what happens. I think long term,
- 46:28Speaker 2: I'm a big Colby Thomas fan. I I was actually
- 46:31Speaker 2: frustrated when he got called up in the kind of
- 46:32Speaker 2: the chatter was that he wasn't going to get full
- 46:35Speaker 2: time playing time, because I still want him over Denzel
- 46:37Speaker 2: Clark all day. But it'll be a matter of can
- 46:42Speaker 2: he bring that full profile. Can he can the speed play,
- 46:45Speaker 2: can the defense play? Can all those things happen that
- 46:48Speaker 2: will allow him the playing time to make the adjustment.
- 46:51Speaker 2: I think Nick Kurtz a ton of talent. There was
- 46:54Speaker 2: an adjustment period. I think that's what we have to
- 46:57Speaker 2: see with Colby. I think there will be an adjustment period.
- 47:00Speaker 2: So I'm not rushing, but I do think he is
- 47:03Speaker 2: gonna be valuable. I'm just not sure how quickly it's
- 47:05Speaker 2: going to be. So I'm not banking on like the
- 47:08Speaker 2: redraft twelve teamers right yet. Unless I see to your
- 47:12Speaker 2: point that he is getting full playing times. You pinch
- 47:14Speaker 2: it in this first game. Next two games he's had
- 47:17Speaker 2: full playing time, So like, if that continues, then I'm
- 47:21Speaker 2: a little bit more intrigued.
- 47:23Speaker 1: All right, I think that's all fair. All right. One
- 47:26Speaker 1: more piece of news, ending this section on a sad note,
- 47:29Speaker 1: as we had Dave Parker pass away this past week
- 47:32Speaker 1: at the age of seventy four. He had been battling
- 47:34Speaker 1: Parkinson's disease for a long time, and so that's why
- 47:38Speaker 1: especially there was a big push to get him into
- 47:40Speaker 1: the Hall of Fame. So that did happen this past January. Unfortunately,
- 47:44Speaker 1: Parker won't be there in Cooperstown this summer to be
- 47:47Speaker 1: able to see the induction and everything, which is is sad,
- 47:50Speaker 1: but at least we got to know that he knew
- 47:52Speaker 1: he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. It will be.
- 47:55Speaker 1: Network recently over the past couple of years put out
- 47:57Speaker 1: a really good documentary on Parker in terms of just
- 48:00Speaker 1: kind of going through and showing like what he's been
- 48:04Speaker 1: through with Parkinson's disease. Because this guy was just like
- 48:08Speaker 1: an all world athlete when he was with the Pittsburgh
- 48:11Speaker 1: Pirates and led them to I believe two titles during
- 48:17Speaker 1: his time. Let me check that again. Nope, just one,
- 48:20Speaker 1: because he picked up another one another World Series title
- 48:24Speaker 1: later in his career with the A's and he won
- 48:26Speaker 1: an MVP with the Pirates. He was a seven time
- 48:29Speaker 1: All Star overall, won the first Home Run Derby when
- 48:33Speaker 1: he was a member of the Cincinnati Reds I believe
- 48:36Speaker 1: once he he was from Cincinnati, so that was a
- 48:38Speaker 1: great reunion for him going back played for in total
- 48:44Speaker 1: two four six teams Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Oakland, Milwaukee, California, and Toronto.
- 48:49Speaker 1: So he's a fun dude for the Immaculate Grid because
- 48:52Speaker 1: you know, also Hall of Famer put up three hundred
- 48:56Speaker 1: and thirty nine career homers forty point one war on
- 48:59Speaker 1: Baseball Reference with twenty seven to twelve hits. So, like
- 49:03Speaker 1: I said, great play on Immaculate Grid. Great like also
- 49:07Speaker 1: emblematic run of flagship tops through kind of the junk
- 49:12Speaker 1: Wax series especially I think about, you know, starting off
- 49:15Speaker 1: in those colorful seventies uniforms and designs, going through you know,
- 49:21Speaker 1: being in some of just the most overproduced sets that
- 49:23Speaker 1: we've ever seen when he was in the Reds and
- 49:26Speaker 1: then that nineteen ninety one card where he's on the
- 49:30Speaker 1: California Angels. It's just I like it. I don't know
- 49:33Speaker 1: what it is about it, but it's a cool card
- 49:35Speaker 1: from that set. Dave Parker's always looked great on a
- 49:38Speaker 1: baseball card. If you want to see some of our
- 49:40Speaker 1: selections for our PC for him, go back to episode
- 49:45Speaker 1: seventy when we talked about Dave Parker when he got
- 49:48Speaker 1: inducted into the Hall of Fame, but he certainly will
- 49:51Speaker 1: be missed, So wanted to open up and see if
- 49:54Speaker 1: you had anything to add on Dave Parker, any thoughts
- 49:56Speaker 1: or memories. We've caught just the tail end of his career,
- 50:00Speaker 1: so you might have seen him a little bit in
- 50:02Speaker 1: the playoffs and stuff, but we didn't see the prime.
- 50:05Speaker 2: Yeah, we didn't got to see the prime. And like,
- 50:06Speaker 2: that's that's what the fun of going back and looking
- 50:09Speaker 2: at a guy like this, especially in the seventies and eighties,
- 50:11Speaker 2: when like, you know, the game was definitely evolving from
- 50:15Speaker 2: the kind of vintage era of you know, your maize
- 50:19Speaker 2: and your mantles and your musuals, your Errands and all
- 50:22Speaker 2: those you know, big names, and then you know, Dave
- 50:27Speaker 2: Parker was just a consistent force. I don't know who
- 50:31Speaker 2: to compare him to today, but like for you know,
- 50:34Speaker 2: a good like fifteen years, like you know, a few
- 50:40Speaker 2: down years with injuries, but otherwise, man, this guy could mash.
- 50:42Speaker 2: He was always hitting twenty to thirty bombs. You know,
- 50:45Speaker 2: he was always stealing a handful of bases. He's you know,
- 50:47Speaker 2: a two ninety career hitter, like his his nineteen seventy
- 50:51Speaker 2: eight season for the Pirates. Thirty homers, hundred and two runs,
- 50:54Speaker 2: hundred and seventeen RBIs, twenty steals, three thirty four average.
- 50:57Speaker 2: That is just an unbelievable season. And so he was
- 51:01Speaker 2: a great, great player. And I always look at him
- 51:05Speaker 2: as like, I feel like one of the most intimidating guys,
- 51:09Speaker 2: the stuff to the plate, Like there was just something
- 51:11Speaker 2: about him. You look him on a baseball card too,
- 51:13Speaker 2: like he just he looks like like a big beast,
- 51:16Speaker 2: just a guy that would be scary to face as
- 51:22Speaker 2: a pitcher. So sad to be missed to your point,
- 51:25Speaker 2: sad that he's gonna miss the ceremonies. But great career,
- 51:29Speaker 2: great person, you know. Sorry, sorry to his family. All
- 51:34Speaker 2: the prayers to the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Oakland, Milwaukee, you know,
- 51:37Speaker 2: and more fans out there in baseball.
- 51:40Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, and I mean yeah, I think he was
- 51:43Speaker 1: a behemith a plate too. That was part of the intimidation,
- 51:45Speaker 1: was a part of his game six five, two thirties
- 51:48Speaker 1: where he clocked in at really was one of the
- 51:50Speaker 1: only players that size back in the day, and certainly
- 51:54Speaker 1: someone who would have been really cool to have stat
- 51:56Speaker 1: cast back in the day, because you watch some of
- 51:58Speaker 1: the highlights and he just absolutely annihilates the ball that
- 52:02Speaker 1: you're talking, like gian Carlo.
- 52:04Speaker 2: Exactly what I was thinking. Exactly I was thinking.
- 52:06Speaker 1: So, yes, we will miss you, Dave Parker. And with that,
- 52:10Speaker 1: we're going to wrap up this news and no section.
- 52:12Speaker 1: We're going to take a quick break, but then we
- 52:15Speaker 1: will be right back to talk about hitters to acquire
- 52:18Speaker 1: to chase rodo categories. All right, welcome back everybody. We
- 52:39Speaker 1: are going to dive into analyzing some players that you
- 52:43Speaker 1: might want to be picking up to make up ground
- 52:45Speaker 1: in those hitting roto categories. So, as I said at
- 52:49Speaker 1: the top of the show, this is a great time
- 52:51Speaker 1: with the All Star break coming up to analyze those teams,
- 52:54Speaker 1: and you're really going to start looking at where can
- 52:57Speaker 1: you make moves pick up some extra roto points in
- 52:59Speaker 1: those as we get down to the stretch run here
- 53:04Speaker 1: over the next couple of months, we've passed the halfway mark,
- 53:07Speaker 1: so it's really gotten to the point where your team
- 53:10Speaker 1: is probably what it is and you've got to start
- 53:13Speaker 1: making some trades or some aggressive pickups on those waiver
- 53:16Speaker 1: wires to be able to just win those couple of points.
- 53:20Speaker 1: And especially like at this point. I don't know about you,
- 53:22Speaker 1: but like you're starting to realize maybe there are categories
- 53:25Speaker 1: you can start punting a little bit more where you know,
- 53:28Speaker 1: if you've fallen into kind of like a good spot
- 53:30Speaker 1: with stolen bases or saves. I feel like this happens
- 53:34Speaker 1: a lot to you, you can start kind of shedding off
- 53:37Speaker 1: some of that value and reallocating into different spots. So
- 53:41Speaker 1: what we're gonna do is we're actually gonna only talk
- 53:43Speaker 1: about four categories. We're gonna talk about home runs, RBI,
- 53:46Speaker 1: stolen bases, batting average, and we're gonna focus on hitters.
- 53:51Speaker 1: Two reasons I'm doing that. One, pitching is fickle, so
- 53:54Speaker 1: like you can try, you can chase like wins and
- 53:58Speaker 1: k's through two starters a little bit. But your best
- 54:01Speaker 1: call is using the ras ball streamingator. You can find
- 54:04Speaker 1: the link to that in our show notes, where you
- 54:06Speaker 1: can sign up for a subscription that can help you
- 54:08Speaker 1: just kind of make up some ground. Closers or closers.
- 54:11Speaker 1: Classic sagnof saves ain't got no face. You're just chasing
- 54:15Speaker 1: the saves. You're just going for the relievers on the
- 54:17Speaker 1: best teams. I'm also skipping focusing on runs because actually,
- 54:22Speaker 1: like runs is one of the things where I'm at
- 54:24Speaker 1: the draft table. Maybe this you can tell me that
- 54:26Speaker 1: it's a mistake to not focus on runs here, or
- 54:29Speaker 1: maybe you're in agreement with me. Runs is something when
- 54:32Speaker 1: I'm at the draft table I care about a whole
- 54:34Speaker 1: lot because it comes through in the valuations, and it
- 54:37Speaker 1: comes through in terms of like what teams are good
- 54:39Speaker 1: and stuff. When I get in season, I'm chasing runs
- 54:43Speaker 1: a lot less because what I'm doing is I'm chasing
- 54:46Speaker 1: Homer's and RBI because I'm just trying to find like
- 54:49Speaker 1: the good power hitters, also chasing average, where it's actually
- 54:53Speaker 1: a flip. At the draft table, I'm not really focused
- 54:57Speaker 1: on average, but I will in season to try to
- 55:00Speaker 1: like see where my team is trending and then what
- 55:03Speaker 1: I can fold in from there. The reason I don't
- 55:05Speaker 1: really look at runs is because like I'm generally looking
- 55:09Speaker 1: at lineup position and like the power production and that
- 55:14Speaker 1: just kind of produces runs in season, like and usually
- 55:18Speaker 1: if you draft well and you use your values well,
- 55:21Speaker 1: it picks up the runs for you. And it's really
- 55:24Speaker 1: tough I think to sometimes chase it in season to
- 55:27Speaker 1: where like it's a little bit of my strategy for
- 55:29Speaker 1: average at the draft table gets flipped with runs in season.
- 55:32Speaker 1: Is that unreasonable or am I No?
- 55:34Speaker 2: It's something I'm actually kind of laughing because I'll slightly
- 55:37Speaker 2: inverse to what my actual approaches is. I actually chase
- 55:41Speaker 2: average and not runs of the draft table, but for
- 55:43Speaker 2: the almost exact same reason, because I'm I'm looking for
- 55:48Speaker 2: guys that are going to booy the average with that
- 55:52Speaker 2: I can trust, and so it gives me more flexibility
- 55:54Speaker 2: in those other power categories and things like that, to
- 55:57Speaker 2: be a little bit more reckless if I need to
- 55:59Speaker 2: in the draft. But I'm looking for the guys that
- 56:02Speaker 2: hit for average that will booy it, which typically are
- 56:04Speaker 2: towards the top of your lineup, which typically produce runs.
- 56:07Speaker 2: And so it's like I think you end up I
- 56:08Speaker 2: just look at the other side of the equation to
- 56:10Speaker 2: a degree and looking to booy that and recognizing that
- 56:13Speaker 2: they have similar characteristics. So I think by I think
- 56:16Speaker 2: we're actually both ending up in a similar spot, because
- 56:18Speaker 2: if you hit for a high average, you and up
- 56:20Speaker 2: on top of the lineup, you actually score runs. I
- 56:22Speaker 2: think you're looking from a run perspective towards the top
- 56:24Speaker 2: of the lineup guys usually get better on base and average,
- 56:27Speaker 2: and so I think, in a weird way, we actually
- 56:29Speaker 2: look at the same thing, but I end up focusing
- 56:31Speaker 2: on average as my proxy for that kind of profile
- 56:34Speaker 2: because I don't Again, I'm trying to open up my
- 56:36Speaker 2: options later in the draft when I can chase steels
- 56:41Speaker 2: or power or something like that and sacrifice average, which
- 56:44Speaker 2: you might just be sacrificing runs from a similar perspective.
- 56:47Speaker 2: So two different ways to go about the same thing.
- 56:50Speaker 2: But it's just like it's ironic that we think we're
- 56:53Speaker 2: doing the same thing. Whether who's right, I don't know.
- 56:56Speaker 1: It's also like it's a little bit of like the
- 56:58Speaker 1: like river cutting through the riverbed with us that like
- 57:02Speaker 1: maybe our draft strategies have just molded together over time,
- 57:06Speaker 1: like grown that way because we're in the same draft
- 57:08Speaker 1: room so often that I wonder if it just naturally happened.
- 57:11Speaker 2: Yes, is like I could ever find these run guys.
- 57:13Speaker 2: So I'm just gonna go the average.
- 57:16Speaker 1: It's great, Okay, Well that is why we're gonna skip
- 57:19Speaker 1: runs though, So because I got to write the run average,
- 57:22Speaker 1: I guess y, I guess if you want to, you
- 57:25Speaker 1: can maybe bring up the runs guy, But let's focus
- 57:28Speaker 1: on home runs first. So I'm gonna pass it over
- 57:31Speaker 1: to you what player, Like I said, this canna be
- 57:33Speaker 1: something you're either trading for so you'll throw in a
- 57:35Speaker 1: few extra chips to make sure you bring them home,
- 57:38Speaker 1: or some of these guys will be on the waiver wire.
- 57:40Speaker 1: So who are you going to for homers?
- 57:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm gonna start with the guy that waiver wire
- 57:45Speaker 2: esque is what I'm gonna call h I'm looking at
- 57:49Speaker 2: CBS ownerships because it was firstly, get pulled up fifty
- 57:53Speaker 2: rostered in that league, and it's Austin Hayes for the
- 57:57Speaker 2: Cincinnati Reds. Hayes is was injured and out and so
- 58:01Speaker 2: he's only thirty six games into his season. He's hit
- 58:05Speaker 2: seven homers so far on a two ninety three average,
- 58:08Speaker 2: and some of that actually came bunches right right when
- 58:10Speaker 2: he when he got back. But the reason I'm calling
- 58:14Speaker 2: him out, and to be clear, he's only got like
- 58:16Speaker 2: two homers in the last months, So it's it's as
- 58:20Speaker 2: far as like games played. He missed a lot of time.
- 58:23Speaker 2: But yeah, yeah, and so but the thing I like
- 58:27Speaker 2: with him is he is playing in the number one ballpark,
- 58:30Speaker 2: four home runs over the last three years, tied with
- 58:33Speaker 2: the Dodgers. There it's not number one this year, it's
- 58:35Speaker 2: like number three or four, but it's it's right up there.
- 58:38Speaker 2: He's hitting clean up for threads and he is a
- 58:44Speaker 2: guy that traditionally has had really really strong power, and
- 58:50Speaker 2: his ISOs up this year, so you're seeing a little
- 58:52Speaker 2: bit more of that contact coming through that that we're
- 58:57Speaker 2: really kind of leaning, leaning into and hoping for the best,
- 59:01Speaker 2: uh from from him. His hard hit rates kind of
- 59:04Speaker 2: in his career average, and but he's he's seen a
- 59:08Speaker 2: little bit of jump in the home run for fly
- 59:09Speaker 2: ball rate as well, and you know, we're seeing the
- 59:13Speaker 2: fly ball rate be the top of his career metric
- 59:17Speaker 2: as well. And again smaller sample size, he hasn't plays
- 59:19Speaker 2: many games. Like all these little things add up to
- 59:22Speaker 2: like I feel like Austin Hayes is gonna have a
- 59:24Speaker 2: homer barrage at some point, and I think that the
- 59:28Speaker 2: price is right to go after that. I don't think
- 59:31Speaker 2: it's hard to acquire Austin Hayes because he's not been
- 59:36Speaker 2: too crazy yet. Other only other thing I'll call out
- 59:41Speaker 2: barrel rate this year fourteen point three percent against a
- 59:44Speaker 2: seven point five percent career average, so like guys hitting
- 59:50Speaker 2: the ball exit velocities. You know, second best season of
- 59:55Speaker 2: his career. So a lot of good things look like
- 59:59Speaker 2: they're happening for Aus Hayes. And I just love the
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: spot and I love the price, So give me the
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: Austin hay Shares, and if I'm needing homers, there's worse
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: guys to get.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: I yeah, I think this is a great choice. Also
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: for Urbis that probably could have played as well. But
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: you also like this profile also screams that he's making
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: a conscious decision to really attack the crap out of
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: pitches that he finds in a sweet spot. The last
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: time he did this was in twenty twenty one, and
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: you know what happened after twenty twenty one, Baltimore moved
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: the left field fence back. So I think now that
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: he's back in Cincinnati, Hayes's where it's a great home
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: run park. He's always had this in his game where
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: he can uncork it. And you look at actually like
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: the plate discipline compared this year to twenty twenty one
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: when he put up twenty two bombs, it's pretty similar.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: So I think there's an approach change where Hayes can
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: toggle it on and off for a contact approach, and
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: he's just going balls to the wall in Cincinnati as
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: the cleanup hitter. So I think this is a great call.
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: It's only going to get hotter in Cincinnati as the
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: summer goes on. That park is gonna be an absolute
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: bandbox here soon.
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I like your call it. I had not looked
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: at his pitch selection, but his career average for first
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: pitch swinging is thirty percent. This year it's forty three
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: point four. He is being an ultra ultra aggressive and
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: he is swinging like first thing he sees in the zone.
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: He's swinging like he's not trying to pick and like
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: some guys you need to be patient and pick your
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: right pitch, wait for the mistake. Other guys like don't
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: get in behind the count and just go. And it
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: feels like that's that's kind of where Austin Hayes is,
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: all right, who'd you pick for your your homer? Homer Helper?
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: All right, we keep going back to this. Well, I'm
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: still ready to keep getting hurt, partly because I alluded
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: to this with the yan Keel call up. Actually I'll
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: have a couple of these guys from the Colorade Rockey's.
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: As we're talking to lie Is, it's such a crazy
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: month for the Rockies. They're either at home or Cincinnati
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: or Boston. They also get the White Sox this weekend
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: in Colorado. It's just going to be like a bunch
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: of fifteen to twenty games. I think that's some pretty
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: awful pitching staffs. But the other thing that happens with
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: the coors Field effect is that once they play like
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: a bunch of games together, the Rockies just get used
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: to the way the ball breaks a little bit more,
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: I think in coers Field at the altitude, and so
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: you're gonna get I think a little bit of that effect.
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: So that's why I'm picking Michael Tolia here. He came
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: back up on June sixteenth. He's hit three homers since
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: then over sixty played appearances. The average is poor. It's
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: two twenty eight, still striking out a ton, But there's
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: nobody else to play for a space here in Colorado
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: that I think they're so far out of it they
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: just kind of want to let Tolio run with this
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: job as long as they can. I mean, he's even
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: kind of hitting like six seventh in the order, so
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: it's not a prime spot, but you just look at
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: the one all that time that he's gonna be getting
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: corps Field here soon too. We know the powers there
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: for Tolia. It's a very like Joey gallowesque profile. But
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: then three like, you're gonna get more bites at the
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: apple because that lineup's gonna turn so many times in July,
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: I think. So that just kind of creates a situation
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: where you also notice I'm not talking about any of
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: the like advanced stats Ontolio because they're bad. I talked
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: about this in my piece this past weekend. He is
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: a terrible major league baseball player. But you know what,
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: we're playing fantasy baseball, and if this guy can run
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: into enough homers for us, you're looking at somebody who's really,
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: really cheap. And you're looking at first base, which has
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: been getting starting to It was already kind of a
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: poor first base group, but it's starting to get poorer
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: with like Paul Goldschmidt playing less, Carlo Santana's starting to
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: fall apart. You can move over to Michael Tolli I think,
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: and you're also at the point of the season where
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: hopefully that two twenty backs isn't killing you quite as
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: bad because you've got enough other good work around it.
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I actually like this. I actually picked him up
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: in our new league recently, uh, just as a as
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: a flyer, because I think he's the kind of guy that,
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: in the right situation, can can really just do things
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: in bunches, and he did last year, and so like
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: it's one of those you know, might have been a
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: career year last year, but I haven't things, but like
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: even a stat cast looked from you know, fantastic last year.
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: So like he's on it before, maybe you can find
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: it again. But you're right, like the guy has power.
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: The guy can absolutely crush the ball. And he's been
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: doing he's looked I would say he's looked better since
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: he's been back up over the last few weeks. That's
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: not really saying a whole lot, because he looked really
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: really bad before. And so I I like, I like
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: where you're going cheap option not gonna really hurt you.
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: And again I'm by a guy I'm like inserting into
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: my lineup. He's kind of the guy that I'm like,
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: I need, I'm gonna need some power I'm gonna throw
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: my bench and then like if I really need to
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: pull that trigger, He's the kind of guy I want
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: to plug it into it. So really good call here,
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: and I think that there's a there's there should be
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: some fun with Michael Tollia at some point in the season.
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: It's just a matter of whins it gonna happen.
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, I mean maybe this weekend against the White Sox.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: That's what I'm hoping for. Okay, let's get over to RBI.
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: Let's go into your pick for RBI. Who's helping you
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: in that category?
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: Yeah, So I'm gonna go with kind of a homer
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: pick here, and I'm gonna go with Alec Burlison for
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: the Cardinals. Burlison has is guy. It's one of those
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: guys like you just look at me, like, how are
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: you a Major League baseball player? Like he like quintessential
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: Beer League softball pitch softball players is Alec Burlison. But
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: he's hitting number three in that lineup every single day,
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: and he's got good talent get it on base ahead
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: of him, and he is pouring in the RBIs. He
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: only has thirty seven on the season, but if you
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: look back. Over the last roughly, you know, call it
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: two ish weeks, he has half of his RBI production
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: in just those two weeks. He's he's hit two fifty nine,
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: but he's hit five homers, sixteen ribies. He's only struck
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: out about thirteen percent of the time over that period.
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: So he's really kind of found a spot in what
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: does I say, a surprisingly decent lineup, and I don't
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: think the cost to acquire him is gonna be that significant.
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: I think he's owned. I haven't looked to see if,
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: but I think he's owned in a few more places
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: than like a you would see for Austin Hayes or
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: anything like that.
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: But he probably is. He's probably near like seventy five percent.
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: Yeah, seventy five eighty somewhere in there, but like not
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: got everybody's relying on it. Like, so, I think he's
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: gonna be sneaky valuable. And it's again because the overall
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: season numbers aren't that crazy. You know, he's only got
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: twenty seven runs in seventy five five games, and the
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: RBIs did were very slow to come considering that he
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: was not batting number three in the for the entire
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: entire season. I think that he was batting seventh, eighth,
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: you know, pinch hitting, like he's really just come into
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: his own and playing time the last few weeks here,
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: So I'm going Burlison, and it's more just situational on
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: a team performing better than we would expect. Excite, except
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: for the last series with Pirates where they've scored like
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: no runs.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a little tough one. Uh yeah, this is
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: a great call. Honestly, this is such a sneaky great
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: call that certainly this is a guy who is not
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: going to cost a lot in the draft market or
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: in the trade market either in terms of going out
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: and acquiring Burlison. It should only cost like a mid
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: tier pitcher or like a back end am I because
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: there's no steals really in the game, and like people
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: see Bush Stadium, No it's a it's a it's a
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: pitcher's park. Don't really want to maybe acquire Burlison. But
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: here's a few things that I think we can point
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: to of like why this is such a great pick. One,
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: the Cardinals are eighth right now and run scored in
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: the league, so they are a pretty high scoring offense,
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: and that's even been playing in that picture friendly park
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: that's been relatively cold. Two. I mean, just look at
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: the last month. Since the beginning of June, he's played
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: twenty seven games, twenty one ribies, So that's like one
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: hundred and forty RBI pace right there already over the
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: past month for Burlison. Three, he's a good peer hitter.
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: It's like kind of John Krucky, honestly, like.
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: Yep, yep, that's very fair.
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: What really I think shows that more than anything else
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: is look at his sweet spot percentage on Savant. It's
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: always been really good. And when you watch him play baseball,
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: he just knows how to square up the ball right
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: and then PLoP it right where he wants. And then
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: when you're on Savant. Also look at his spray chart.
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: He's just like punching singles right in front of the
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: outfielders constantly. You know what that racks up RBIs when
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: you're hitting third and fourth of the lineup. So this
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: might be the best pick out there for an RBI
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: category pickup.
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: Yeah, there's in you know, you look at comparisons for him.
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: You know, number one similar batter is Vinie Paso, And
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: like Vinnie, if you try to acquire him and be like, well, no,
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: it's like he's they're pretty much the same player, Vini.
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: I think his values more than his actual capability. Bur
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: Listen is actually the other side. But they're pretty much
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: the same guy.
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: Okay, well we're going to get into my pick. It's
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: probably a little higher, and so it is going to
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: cost you a trade certainly that he's going to be
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: owned in pretty much every league out there. But I
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: think at this point the trade value for Brent Rooker
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: has probably slipped a little bit, or like the trade
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: cost I would say for you know, when he was
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: coming into the season, he was really set up to
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: you know, maybe push something like forty. So the stolen
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: basis have fallen back a little bit. So whoever picked
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: him in your roster might be or in your league
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: might be a little disappointed that they spent probably like
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: a maybe a second or third round pick on him
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: and have only been getting like a twenty ish dollar
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: player out of him so far. Where's that clock and
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: our player raider that would have been, It's about the
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: fiftieth overall player, so it's a little bit more of
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: like a fourth rounder, and so just that little sliver
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: of value is where I think you need to thread
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: the needle on Rooker, partly because he's been looking much
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: better over the past month with a two eighty seven,
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: three eighty four, four eighty one slash line. So one
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: forty two WRC plus fourteen RBIs four homers as there
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: were like he was one of the guys who especially
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: like when the ball was not quite acting the same.
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: He he called that out and I think he started
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: to tweak his game. I just saw it in like
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: a homer this afternoon. He just knows how to hit,
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: and his pushed his game to be able to line
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: up for it. What I'm also looking at here, too,
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: is I think there might be a little bit of
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: an understanding that the Athletics have already played most of
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: their games in Sacramento. It's actually the opposite because the
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: Rays have done that. The Race have played the majority
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: of their games so far in Tampa. So you're like, Rais,
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: you know, bandbox minor league stadium stats are gonna start
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: being tapered a little bit as we get further down
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: into the season. It's the opposite. Right now for the A's,
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: they've played forty two games at home, forty seven on
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: the road. So they actually have more left in Sacramento
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: as we're speaking on July second than they do on
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: the road. And I don't think that's the prevailing kind
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: of thought pattern out there, because what they did is
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: they lined it up so that there's just like not
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: in July as much, or not in Sacramento for July
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: as much, but August they're there three out of five weeks,
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: and then they split September between Sacramento and on the
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: road August and Sacramento is gonna get crazy. So I'm
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: suggesting approach to that Brent Rooker owner right now. See
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: what the price is, and I'd probably be happy to
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: pay it at this point because I think we're looking
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: at a pretty big second half of Brent Rooker.
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't disagree. I actually because I do Brtt
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: Rooker in some spots, and I it's funny because he's
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: twietly just doing what he did last year, like in
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: an odd way, like it's not too far off. We're
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: a little past halfway we talked about at the end
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: of the show, but more or less, you double what
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: he's doing and that's pretty much what he did last year,
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: and you know, give him a little bit of a
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: few more months and it is exactly what he did
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: last year if you chip in a steel or two.
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: So I think there's just that to your point, like
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: his his value jumps so high that now if he's
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: not doing if he's not like carring your team, people
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: are like, eh, it's not the career year for Brent
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: Rooker was last year. He still incredibly valuable. The year
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: before he hit thirty bombs at two forty six and
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: he was still valuable. And he's better than that now.
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: So I love Rooker. If somebody's willing to let the
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: guy go, absolutely take every opportunity to do that, because
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: Brent Rooker is probably one of the best, if not,
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: you know, he's not Aaron Judge, but he's probably in
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: the top five to ten power bats in the game
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: in my opinion, and that situation he's got cannot be better.
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: Yeah, totally agree. Okay, Well, let's move on to one
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: of the most fickle categories we toy with in our
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: fantasy baseball realm, spoile and bases. Who's your pick here?
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: Yeah, So I called him out earlier as being volatile,
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: and it's absolutely true. The thing is with speed that
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: doesn't matter as much. I'm talking about Trevor's story of
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: the Boston Red Sox, who on the season has thirteen
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: steels in actually twelve homers, but he's only hitting two
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: thirty seven, struck out almost thirty percent of the time,
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: and he has been he started hot, he got incredibly cold,
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: and he's picking it up again and looking more valuable.
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: But the reason I'm calling out from a steels perspective
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: because he has a decent amount of steals over the
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: last like thirty days, I think you know, four or five,
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: but I think he's got more in there. This is
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: a guy from a sprint speed perspective, is in the
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: mid eighties percent of the league, and he's not at
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: his peak when he's like twenty five, where he was
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: like ninety seven percentile. But for a thirty two year old,
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: I think folks don't see him as a speedster, but
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: he truly is. The Thing that really intrigues me, though,
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: is if if you went on stack casting, you don't
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: if you haven't played around with the run data out there,
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: it's it's it's really interesting data. But they actually have
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: a stat that they call a steal attempt percent. So
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: it's how often do you steal of the opportunities you
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: have when you're on base? And throughout his career it's
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: always been like the two percent, even like high one percent.
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: But the last two years, which were injury riddled in Boston,
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: so let's let's own that. But injury riddled, he was
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: a four percent and five percent, he was running a
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: lot more. This year it's back down to that two
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: and a half percent. And I feel like Boston's more
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: willing now that they recognize Trevor Story is not gonna
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: be this like amazing power hitter and just carry the
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: whole team. They're like, let's take the value and get
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: from Trevor Story however we want to. And so I
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: think that he has the red the red light, the
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: green light red sox that the green light doesn't work.
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: I think he has the green light to run, and
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: he's he just hasn't. He's been such a slump that
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: he hasn't been doing next. He hasn't been on Baby.
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: He's frankly enough, but he's got the big contract. He's
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: gonna be there. He's gonna, you know, be a fictional lineup.
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: He's a pretty much during decent defender, So I think
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: he's gonna stay in there. I just think they're gonna
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: let him run more. And I think, is he kind
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: of heats back up, He like, you're gonna get the
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: steels steals in bunches. So that's my my call out there.
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: I think honestly, I think people have cast off river
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: story because of how bad he was for like forty
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: five daysish, and so I think now he's a sneaky,
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: sneaky steels guy and the powers there too.
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: Yeah, No, I think I think this is a pretty
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: good call because, like the other factor too, is I
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: wonder if he's also been spurred to run a little
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: bit more because everyone around him is kind of younger
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: and he's kind of the old vet of this team
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: that you know, feels like he's got to justify, especially
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: if he's gonna stick at shortstop over a lot of
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: these other young infielders around him. I think he's got
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: to show that he can handle it. So I think
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: this is a great call. Also, like a player who
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: you know right now is hitting two thirty seven, but
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: it's been better over the past month at two eighty three,
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: a little babip driven, but that's also something where it
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: just opens the door to acquire him a little bit more,
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: because a two thirty seven average looks a little grosser
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: when you're trying to add it all up on the
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: other side, when you're making that trade. So I think
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: this is a great call out.
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: Okay, all right, where did you go?
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: I am going to go with somebody who is two
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: for seven on steel attempts this year. This is I
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: will admit that this looks a little bit of a
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: stretch on paper, but I'm going to go with my boy,
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: Luis Ronhifo from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, mostly
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: because he's probably been left for dead in some leagues
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: where he's just hanging out.
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: On the wire.
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: Maybe he's on the back end of a roster in
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: your league, and that person, I can guarantee you, has
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: almost been looking at every opportunity to cut bait on
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: renhefo that they can, but if they haven't been paying attention,
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: he's been much better over the past month, and especially
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: over the past let me look at it again. If
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: you just kind of add up the past two two weeks,
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: you're looking at somebody who has put up around a
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: two ninety three average over twelve games, he's not picked
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: up another steal. But this is a guy who last
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: year picked up twenty four steals for you, and a
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: lot of that was just volume based in terms of
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: being on base, and a little bit of a factor
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: here too is Hnifo and Ron and Washington never have
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: seen eye to eye.
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: I don't know what it is.
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: Ron Washington kind of like, I mean, we wish him
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: the best. He is out for the rest of the season,
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: which I think is helping Renifo's case. Here is what
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: I'm about to say, but we do hope that he
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: gets into a speedy recovery. But he's also a bit
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: of a stubborn guy, and so when he gets into
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: kind of these spats with players, players can really fall
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: on this wrong side. And I think that's what happened
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: to when Heifo, he was starting to fall into a
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: part time role. Now has regained it as the Angels
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: have re entered the race and they realize, oh, actually,
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: this dude is maybe like one of our better hitters.
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: Because I think what you're looking at is something that
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: can be a league average line, which is pretty much
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: what most of the projections have him set for you know,
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: average around a two fifty to sixty mark. But I
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: think he can paces back out to twenty steels again
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: just as he gets more comfortable and gets his legs
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: underneath him. Now that he's actually getting on base, I
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: think he's going to be really cheap second and third
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: base eligible as well. So lots of spots where you
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: might be able to use the least from Heifa.
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: I really don't want to like this one, to be honest,
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: but like there's a very valid point here is that
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: he runs. They let him run. He's not doing well.
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: With it, no, but he didn't last year and.
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: He's not that fast, but like for whatever reason, they
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: let him run, and maybe they were kind of holding
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: him back this year. So like when you're looking like steels,
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: like they're hard to find unless you're like, you know,
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: throwing Chandler something on this this this note here, but
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: like that was the obvious one, right, But to your point,
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: he's two for seven last year it was twenty four
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: for thirty one, so it was a heck of a
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: lot more efficient. But his whole career he's not been
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: that great. But if this was flipped the other way
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: and he was five for seven, you'd be like, oh, yeah,
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: I kind of see it. And to your point, he's
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: getting on base moore or things like that. So I
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: don't want to like it, but I think I think
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: it's a sneaky decent pick. Sneaky decent. This is as
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: far as I'm going to go for you with luish
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: Renhifo here.
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: I appreciate it. Thanks, Okay, Well let's move on to
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: that batting average. So who's your pick for a batting
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: average pickup?
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: Yeah, so I'm I'm it's probably the first time I've
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: ever actually put this guy on some like type of
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: bio of any sort whatsoever. And maybe that's just a
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: nature of how gosh darn far he has fallen. And
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: that's a Bobashet of the Torontoto Blue Jays. And you know,
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: Bose had a decent decent year. He's hitting two seventy two,
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: three eleven, four to twenty seven. He's got eleven homer
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: stolen four bases, which isn't really what we expect him
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: to be, but his k rates come out, come down.
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: He's his baby's actually relatively low is lower last year,
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: but career babip is three thirty three. He's at three
- 1:21:13Speaker 2: oh one, So he's definitely kind of on the the
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: the unlucky side of things right now. Uh. He also
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: is a guy that from like, uh you know, actual
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: like hard hit rate perspective, has actually hit the ball
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: a little bit harder than historically he has, and his
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: expected batan average is three h nine against the two
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: seventy two. He's running like he's just Boba Sheet's always
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: been a really really pure hitter. Look at the spray chart.
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: Besides the power, he's more of a true pole guy
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: from a power perspective, but his he uses all feels.
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: You know. He's just a really really solid ballplayer that
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: gets hits. And I think he, like the markets actually
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: swung so significantly the other way because Boba Sheet, when
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: he first came up, it was he is going to
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: be the next best thing, you know. He he was
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: putting up crazy numbers. He was twenty twenty one season,
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: he sold twenty five bases at twenty nine homers, scored
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: one hundred and twenty one runs, went in two ninety eight.
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: Like he was a first round value. He was Corbyn Carroll,
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: he was Julio Rodriguez, he was all of those guys
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: and I feel like the market has soured so significantly
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: of boast that they've and the fact that his average
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: has dropped, they're just saying that that's real because the
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: market softened on him. So I think Boba Schet's actually
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: relatively available. And if you're gonna pick a guy that's
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: gonna hit three thirty the rest of the year, there's
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: not many out there that you want to put money on,
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: and Boba Schet's absolutely one of them. So, like I
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: said first time, I'm probably ever recommending by Boba sheet
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: because I think the market has gone so far the
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: other way which I was leading that train. I was
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: driving real hard down the hill, and I think the
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: train just kept on going and folks have overreacted to it.
- 1:22:59Speaker 2: So I think now ST's actually become a buying opportunity
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: specific to batted average.
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I think this is a great call. I honestly,
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: it'd been a while since I checked in on Boba Schet,
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: and he is back to smoking the ball a lot
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: that like this is back to, you know, when he
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: was running that two ninety batting average. He's essentially right
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: there again, but it's only a two seventy two. He
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: has been out the past couple days with a knee issue.
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: But if anything, that kind of might crack open the
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: window on being able to acquire him in a trade,
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: because yeah, I mean, I think this is all signs
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: pointing to somebody who should be hitting two ninety to
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: three hundred if he keeps up this production, and the
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: batting average is twenty points lower than that, So I
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: think there's certainly ground to be made up with Bobachett
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: and batting average.
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: Great pick, All right, let's finish it out. Who is
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: that amazing pick that I know you're gonna go to Colorado?
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: You led this one in because you said you're gonna
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: pick another guy, So, uh it's Hunter Goodman, right, No, sorry.
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: Fernandez batting average. No, I'm picking Jordan Beck. So this
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: is another guy who I think has turned a corner
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: where folks might not be totally familiar with with what
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: he's been doing recently. You know, it is a twenty
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: seven percent strikeout rate on the season, but he's been
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: hovering it closer to like twenty four to twenty five
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: over the past month. The seas since June first, at
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: twenty three point four percent twenty four point twenty three
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: point four percent. That's why I said, right, yeah, And
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: so that's a lot more contact than we were expecting
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: from the guy who, honestly, I was worried when he
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: came up he might be whiffing at a third the time.
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: You can also see it. It's a little bit like
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: Alec Burlson, where he's making great contact with the sweet spot,
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: spraying the ball a little bit more and that will
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: play beautifully in Coors Field. This season in Coors Field,
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: Jordan Beck has a three to twenty four batting average
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: at home. I think this dude is he figured out
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: course field pretty well hitting second or third in the lineup.
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: We were just talking about what the Rocky schedule is
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: for July. You're also looking at again that lineup turn
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: how many times he's going to get to the plate
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: batning second or third. This is a guy who can
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: make a lot of quick work for that batting average
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: while he's playing in Coors is much rougher on the road.
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: It's been two fourteen this year, but he has hit
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: more homers oddly, but so that is something to keep
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: in mind. You know, if you're in weekly, daily leagues,
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: maybe have a way to push him in and out
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: of your lineup, but considering the price that you might
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: have to pay to acquire Jordan Beck, or honestly, he's
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: probably still sitting out there on waiver wires like he was.
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: One of my suggestions this last week. He was under
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: fifty percent on CBS leagues and that's a free three
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: hundred batting average when you're playing him at home. Add in,
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: he's pretty much like a twenty twenty talent at this point,
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: lots of runs. I love this profile for Jordan Beck,
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: a lot of it because of the price. It's a
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: little bit of like Brenton Doyle without kind of like
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: the actual like name brand to it. Where Doyle. I
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: think people got used to having him be good last year.
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: They just haven't kind of updated their priors of Jordan Beck.
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: Strikeout artists from last year is now Jordan Beck singles machine.
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: It's it's funny if these Colorado hitters, it feels like
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: it was like every years just like uh, Michael Tolia
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: looks amazing, not so much and then uh, you know,
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: we just see Britton Doyle taking off and not so much,
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: and maybe Jordan Beck's doing that right now, Like I
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: don't Tovara did the same thing. I don't. I don't
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: know who to rely on. But to your point, you
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: look at him, I just randomly picked. It's like the
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: last three weeks and he'sitt in two ninety nine xp loost,
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: he's just about ninety. He's cutting down the strikeouts, like yeah,
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: sure there's a little baby bluck and things like that.
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: That's what happens here. But to your point, he's probably
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: relatively free in mostly or like fifty percent of the leagues.
- 1:27:02Speaker 2: And so I think this is a good call. Like
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: I've not paid much attention to Beck because every time
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: I looked, it just like a no, no, too much concern,
- 1:27:10Speaker 2: too much concern. But this this is the type of
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: the time of the season where you got little holes
- 1:27:14Speaker 2: in your lineup that if you can be playing platoons
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: or playing home away splits, things like that, Like that's
- 1:27:21Speaker 2: that's managing right there. That's that's the end season work
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: that can make things happen. So I like, I think
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: this is a sneaky good pick here. I'll take this
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: one over at Luis renheathol.
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: Okay, I think that's fair. Okay, Well that's going to
