- 0:35Speaker 2: be the stable for me.
- 0:36Speaker 1: What about you? Red Wine Stafle uh So. Before we
- 0:43Speaker 1: get into this episode, quick reminder, Stuff Mom Never Told
- 0:47Speaker 1: You is going on a voyage with Virgin Voyages. Hey. Yes,
- 0:52Speaker 1: they are sponsoring us to go on a voyage from
- 0:56Speaker 1: October second to the seventh this year, twenty twenty six.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Just to make sure to clarify it is.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Yeah, this is twenty twenty seven. You're too late.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Yes, sorry you missed it. It was blessed yes, and
- 1:13Speaker 1: it will be going from New York City to Bermuda.
- 1:18Speaker 1: We will be recording a live podcast on on the
- 1:21Speaker 1: trip and stuff you should know, a podcast you might
- 1:27Speaker 1: have heard of. Stuff they don't want you to know.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Also will be there. There will be fun events you
- 1:35Speaker 1: can hang out, meet us. See how it's done, I guess.
- 1:40Speaker 1: But yeah, Also it's adults only. We didn't say that
- 1:43Speaker 1: the last time I mentioned it, but it is adults
- 1:45Speaker 1: only twenty one and over, Yes, twenty one and over.
- 1:51Speaker 1: If you would like to learn more, we are going
- 1:53Speaker 1: to be talking about this more over the coming months,
- 1:55Speaker 1: but if you would like to learn more before then,
- 1:58Speaker 1: you can visit Virgin Voyages dot com slash stuff and
- 2:03Speaker 1: that's also where you can get your tickets. We would
- 2:07Speaker 1: love to see you, all right. So this feels kind
- 2:13Speaker 1: of strange to me, but because of the way the
- 2:15Speaker 1: calendar works, this is our Star Wars, our annual Star
- 2:19Speaker 1: Wars Day episode that I do. It's coming out before
- 2:24Speaker 1: it's even May. It feels wrong, but just the timing
- 2:29Speaker 1: of things, this is when it has to happen. So
- 2:33Speaker 1: this is where we are. But Star Wars Day, if
- 2:38Speaker 1: you somehow don't know, if you somehow missed it from
- 2:41Speaker 1: listening to this podcast, is May the fourth. There's also
- 2:46Speaker 1: Revenge of the Fifth or Revenge of the sixth, and
- 2:49Speaker 1: this is the May so there's a lot. There's a
- 2:53Speaker 1: lot of Star Wars stuff going on. But I have
- 2:59Speaker 1: people I've talked about this before because I have this
- 3:05Speaker 1: strong association with Star Wars. Everybody who's like Star Wars Day.
- 3:09Speaker 1: You know, we need to talk to Annie. I've already
- 3:14Speaker 1: got plans, and this weekend it just feels wrong. It
- 3:19Speaker 1: feels too early. I don't I might. I just wish
- 3:26Speaker 1: it could be it's on a Monday this year. It's
- 3:31Speaker 1: not working for me, Samantha. I'm sorry.
- 3:35Speaker 2: I'll change it for you if I could.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you. Oh, it would be so much
- 3:43Speaker 1: better if it was not on a Monday. But you know,
- 3:47Speaker 1: we roll with the punches, the Star Wars Day punches. Oh,
- 3:51Speaker 1: random aside, I just have to put this in here.
- 3:55Speaker 1: We recently did our Aliens episode and I'm there. I
- 4:02Speaker 1: briefly mentioned Alien three and I said, I don't know
- 4:07Speaker 1: who directed Alien three, but I know Josh Whedon wrote it.
- 4:13Speaker 1: David Fincher directed Alien three, and I just want to clearly,
- 4:18Speaker 1: I want that out of my system. When I remembered that,
- 4:22Speaker 1: it like broke my brain, and I was so angry
- 4:25Speaker 1: at my past self.
- 4:26Speaker 2: That you couldn't remember.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Yes, it was because I knew it was a famous director,
- 4:32Speaker 1: but I couldn't remember it was David Fincher, and I
- 4:36Speaker 1: thank you for the correction. I'm also mad that one
- 4:39Speaker 1: of my friends who has never seen that movie was like,
- 4:42Speaker 1: oh the David Fincher, Oh she's the reason she did
- 4:47Speaker 1: you she did.
- 4:49Speaker 2: I don't know if illow you once and then it once.
- 4:52Speaker 2: I can't remember what it was. I just remember having
- 4:54Speaker 2: a very big.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Victory over it. I feel like you've done it a
- 4:57Speaker 1: couple of times.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Have I Okay, I just remember the one. Maybe you
- 5:00Speaker 2: can't remember what it was.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Maybe you had one that was like excruciatingly like a
- 5:06Speaker 1: throwdown for me, and you counted it twice. Yeah, I
- 5:11Speaker 1: could see that. I could see that. Well anyway, I
- 5:14Speaker 1: had to get that out of my system. Oh no, yes,
- 5:18Speaker 1: So this Star Wars Day does feel strange. I usually
- 5:24Speaker 1: last year we went to a drag show. I usually
- 5:28Speaker 1: go to the Plaza because they show one. The Plaza
- 5:34Speaker 1: is a local independent theater in Atlanta. But this year
- 5:36Speaker 1: they're showing Attack to the Clones, which I have to
- 5:38Speaker 1: say it might be one of my Ley's favorites. That
- 5:44Speaker 1: one's It does have a killer soundtrack, of course it does,
- 5:49Speaker 1: because it's John Williams. I just don't know if I
- 5:52Speaker 1: can I don't know. But last year I didn't go
- 5:56Speaker 1: when they showed Phantom Menace and the actor who plays
- 6:00Speaker 1: Obi Wan Kenobi Want McGregor showed up at the showing,
- 6:03Speaker 1: and I still regret that.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Well, you do know that, Like there's a huge film
- 6:08Speaker 2: festival happening in Atlanta and a lot of celebrity to
- 6:11Speaker 2: hear going to the plaza specifically, like Josh Brolin has
- 6:14Speaker 2: been here for his movie, so it wouldn't be surprising.
- 6:18Speaker 2: I don't know someone showed up. I'm just letting you know.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I have to weigh the pros and cons. Yeah, the potentials. Yeah,
- 6:29Speaker 1: you know I did rewatch Clone Wars maybe a couple
- 6:35Speaker 1: of years ago. I know, I made you watch the
- 6:37Speaker 1: whole thing. You sure did the prequels, and it wasn't
- 6:40Speaker 1: as bad as I remember it being. But I think
- 6:42Speaker 1: that's because I remembered it being so awful.
- 6:47Speaker 2: You did build it up to be like this is little,
- 6:49Speaker 2: this is just awful. This is the worst.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Yeah, what's his name?
- 6:53Speaker 2: That one character you can't stand?
- 6:56Speaker 1: I have a couple of those on the fort.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Yeah, Alien who kind of just like is really clumsy
- 7:03Speaker 2: the entire time.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Oh, George ar Binks.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Well a lot gave me a lot of
- 7:09Speaker 2: heads up about that.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Well, I think that was fair of me. I think
- 7:14Speaker 1: that was a legitimate thing for me to do. I
- 7:16Speaker 1: actually pat myself on the back for warning you. One
- 7:34Speaker 1: of the interesting things though, because I was talking to
- 7:36Speaker 1: a friend of ours about our thoughts on the Prequels, because,
- 7:41Speaker 1: as we've discussed before, they kind of are going through
- 7:44Speaker 1: a renaissance right now, and he said he really appreciated
- 7:50Speaker 1: Clone Wars as he was older, and he kind of
- 7:54Speaker 1: gave me his reasons why, and I ultimately disagreed. But
- 7:57Speaker 1: I kind of wonder if it's like the Romantic one,
- 8:03Speaker 1: and so I kind of wonder if I'm just.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Not Is this the one where he talks about how
- 8:07Speaker 2: he hates sand Is that one? Yes?
- 8:09Speaker 1: And I agree, you're a really it's a fair point too.
- 8:16Speaker 1: It gets everywhere. It's course, it gets everywhere. Yeah, So
- 8:24Speaker 1: I wonder if that's part of why I don't like
- 8:26Speaker 1: that one so much. I'll have to reevaluate. The thing is,
- 8:29Speaker 1: And this is part of what I want to talk
- 8:30Speaker 1: about today, is that the Prequels, as many issues as
- 8:37Speaker 1: they have, which I think are numerous, watching them now,
- 8:44Speaker 1: it just hits differently because they are very much here's
- 8:49Speaker 1: your democracy and here's the insidious effort that overturns it,
- 8:56Speaker 1: and all of the ways and the good faith, the
- 9:00Speaker 1: way good faith is manipulated to overturn it. I mean,
- 9:05Speaker 1: people have done side by sides of the rise of
- 9:09Speaker 1: Donald Trump and the rise of the Emperor from the prequels,
- 9:13Speaker 1: and it's unsettling. It's like legitimately, like they even have
- 9:20Speaker 1: a scene in the third one where the Emperor it says,
- 9:26Speaker 1: this attack on my life has left me to fall,
- 9:29Speaker 1: and he's got like a bandage on his ear. Is
- 9:33Speaker 1: that Donald Trump? It's the same thing. It's eerie, it's
- 9:38Speaker 1: really eerie. But it's about a fall of a republic
- 9:42Speaker 1: and a bunch of institutions and then many many years
- 9:50Speaker 1: of fascism and death and all of that that comes
- 9:54Speaker 1: from it. And then you get to a new hope,
- 9:57Speaker 1: and you know a new hope is coming, and so
- 9:58Speaker 1: that's exciting and you're like, yes, yes, But then they
- 10:03Speaker 1: came out with the sequels, and the sequels were actually
- 10:06Speaker 1: like no, just kidding about that new hope. Park And
- 10:12Speaker 1: I was watching Return of the Jedi with a friend
- 10:15Speaker 1: of mine the other day and she said, this movie
- 10:19Speaker 1: used to be so I would get to the end
- 10:22Speaker 1: and I'd be so optimistic, and now I just know
- 10:25Speaker 1: what's coming in the sequels, and I'm like, let's just
- 10:28Speaker 1: end it here, friend, let's pretend the sequels.
- 10:32Speaker 2: We're just gonna pretend it didn't happen.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Well, put them in a separate category. You can you
- 10:37Speaker 1: can have the days where you need it to end there,
- 10:40Speaker 1: and then you can have the days where you reconcile
- 10:43Speaker 1: with the fact that they did not in fact in there.
- 10:49Speaker 1: But a lot of new Star Wars stuff is really political,
- 10:54Speaker 1: and it's always been very political. It's very it's very philosophical, like,
- 10:58Speaker 1: you know, superficially, it's kind of a kid's fairy tale
- 11:03Speaker 1: in space, and that's the most like base way I
- 11:07Speaker 1: could describe it. I think it's much more than that, obviously,
- 11:09Speaker 1: but if you think about why people get so invested
- 11:14Speaker 1: in arguing about it, it is very philosophical. There's a
- 11:17Speaker 1: lot of religious arguments you can have, there's a lot
- 11:20Speaker 1: of political arguments you can have. And I feel like
- 11:23Speaker 1: a lot of the new stuff that's coming out is
- 11:25Speaker 1: very political. So I don't want to say that's like
- 11:29Speaker 1: deviating from the norm, but it's much darker when we
- 11:34Speaker 1: did our original Star Wars Princess Leia episodes, we talked
- 11:41Speaker 1: about why they were so successful. At least one of
- 11:44Speaker 1: the main reasons they were so successful, and it's because
- 11:46Speaker 1: they were optimistic in a time of it was like
- 11:49Speaker 1: the Vietnam War, and people wanted to see something that
- 11:55Speaker 1: wasn't so grim, and it also had a lot of
- 11:57Speaker 1: facts people hadn't seen for but because it's so dark,
- 12:04Speaker 1: and because the world we live in is so dark,
- 12:06Speaker 1: and like the season in season two of and Or,
- 12:10Speaker 1: they have a speech that feels like it's about Donald Trump,
- 12:14Speaker 1: but that it was written before he was re elected, I believe,
- 12:19Speaker 1: But it just is like, oh my gosh, this is
- 12:21Speaker 1: the world we're living in. So it doesn't feel like
- 12:26Speaker 1: the escape that I go to it for. So I
- 12:31Speaker 1: actually haven't watched and Or season two. It's been out
- 12:35Speaker 1: for a long time. It's been on my calendar for
- 12:37Speaker 1: a long time, and I keep moving it week per week,
- 12:39Speaker 1: like are you ready to mentally handle it this week? No?
- 12:45Speaker 1: All right, push to the next week. And I know
- 12:48Speaker 1: it's good. I know I'll like it. I think it'll
- 12:51Speaker 1: depressed me, but I'll like it. And I was thinking
- 12:54Speaker 1: about this too, because I've you know, been open about
- 12:59Speaker 1: how in some cases, when the pandemic happened. For instance,
- 13:05Speaker 1: here I was playing The Last of Us Too, which
- 13:08Speaker 1: is an extremely depressing game, and it was like my
- 13:12Speaker 1: comfort game. But I think that the politics aspect of
- 13:17Speaker 1: Star Wars in and Or in this case is something
- 13:21Speaker 1: that feels way more real to me. And so it's
- 13:25Speaker 1: not I don't know, it doesn't have that level of
- 13:30Speaker 1: Catharsis that the Last of Us two had for me.
- 13:34Speaker 1: So yes, I have been putting off watching and Or,
- 13:39Speaker 1: which is funny too because and Or season two ends
- 13:46Speaker 1: right before Rogue one begins. Your favorite film. I just
- 13:54Speaker 1: made a mistake, is all it haven't. And when I
- 14:01Speaker 1: saw Rogue one it was really sad and depressing, but
- 14:05Speaker 1: I again I knew a new hope was coming. But
- 14:08Speaker 1: now the sequels hangover the whole thing. And I don't
- 14:14Speaker 1: even want to talk about all of the retcons I'm
- 14:16Speaker 1: having to deal with right now. But that's that's another reason.
- 14:23Speaker 1: I'm just like, you know what, maybe I'll stick to
- 14:26Speaker 1: my fan fiction for now, my original trilogy, and let
- 14:30Speaker 1: you all sort this out and stop putting me through
- 14:33Speaker 1: emotional turmoil for decisions that you will backtrack on months
- 14:39Speaker 1: later Anyway, I did also want to briefly mention because
- 14:48Speaker 1: Savers doing an episode on this around this time of year,
- 14:53Speaker 1: there is a lot of marketing that comes out Star
- 14:57Speaker 1: Wars marketing, and we're doing some of the biggest examples
- 15:05Speaker 1: of all time. And I was researching that before we
- 15:07Speaker 1: started recording this actually, and you know, for better or worse,
- 15:14Speaker 1: and a lot of people would say for worse Star
- 15:17Speaker 1: Wars was there in the early days they were like
- 15:20Speaker 1: pioneering the marketing game, and I was surprised that it
- 15:25Speaker 1: was in nineteen seventy seven when the first one came out,
- 15:28Speaker 1: they were already like Burger king seller stuff. So that's
- 15:35Speaker 1: interesting to me that now, like if you go to
- 15:37Speaker 1: the store right now, you'll see multiple, multiple items. And
- 15:44Speaker 1: sometimes it makes me laugh that, you know, Darth Vader
- 15:52Speaker 1: is on everything. He would be so angry. But also,
- 15:55Speaker 1: you know, the message of the original trilogy was very
- 16:00Speaker 1: fascism is bad. Maybe not do give all these companies
- 16:05Speaker 1: all this money, and then here it is, it's everywhere.
- 16:20Speaker 1: One of the reasons this is this particular aspect of
- 16:24Speaker 1: this conversation that's been on my mind is I did vote.
- 16:28Speaker 1: It is the preliminary election here in Georgia. The ballot
- 16:37Speaker 1: was very long. It took me a long time actually,
- 16:44Speaker 1: both to research and to vote. Now, the line there
- 16:47Speaker 1: was no line walked right in early voting, and I
- 16:50Speaker 1: got one of those fantastic kind of passive aggressive postcards
- 16:56Speaker 1: in the mail that was like, we can't tell who
- 16:59Speaker 1: you vote for, but we'll know if you voted, yeah.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Which is really not cool. That's such a weird we
- 17:05Speaker 2: have on record. Well, bro, that makes me not want
- 17:08Speaker 2: to vote, even though I'm a proponent voting. Stop doing that.
- 17:13Speaker 1: The one I got was so cute, I didn't mind.
- 17:15Speaker 1: It had like a lot of like drawings of stars
- 17:17Speaker 1: on it. I was like, oh, okay, cute drawings as
- 17:22Speaker 1: they threatened me. Yes essentially essentially. But you know, obviously
- 17:34Speaker 1: a lot is going on when it comes to politics,
- 17:38Speaker 1: not only in the US but in the world. But uh,
- 17:41Speaker 1: Star Wars has been utilized in that UH as kind
- 17:48Speaker 1: of a source of rebellion in a lot of cases,
- 17:49Speaker 1: and sometimes what I think is a really fundamental misunderstanding
- 17:53Speaker 1: of what movies mean on the ultra conservative side, but
- 17:58Speaker 1: people using like Obi wan speech about the fall Republic
- 18:03Speaker 1: and people using Lea as a joined the resistance kind
- 18:08Speaker 1: of sign which we talked about in the Princess La episodes.
- 18:12Speaker 1: So that's one of the reasons it's been on my mind.
- 18:15Speaker 1: I guess I was kind of trying to think of
- 18:17Speaker 1: how we're going to celebrate this Star Wars day and
- 18:20Speaker 1: I was like, we could watch and or and I
- 18:22Speaker 1: was like, oh, no, I just don't think I'm ready.
- 18:24Speaker 1: I don't think i'm ready for it. I think I
- 18:27Speaker 1: need the optimism. I think I need the optimism. And
- 18:32Speaker 1: then one other thing I was thinking about was wanting
- 18:36Speaker 1: to hold on to things, this kind of idea of
- 18:39Speaker 1: wanting to hold on to I want to hold onto
- 18:44Speaker 1: the idea that it did work out after Return of
- 18:47Speaker 1: the Jedi, which I had long held until the sequels
- 18:52Speaker 1: came out, and I was reading the books and the
- 18:54Speaker 1: comics and all of that, and just all of these
- 18:58Speaker 1: things that sometimes give me anxiety. When I see other
- 19:03Speaker 1: people have moved on, I guess like they're like, yeah.
- 19:08Speaker 2: That.
- 19:10Speaker 1: They're never going to bring back the Jedi or the
- 19:12Speaker 1: Republic or any new new ideas, which maybe they do.
- 19:16Speaker 1: But there's a part of me that wants to hold
- 19:18Speaker 1: on to this, and so I I have been trying
- 19:25Speaker 1: to examine. I don't know the pros and cons. I
- 19:32Speaker 1: guess it's It's ultimately an escapism for me, so I
- 19:38Speaker 1: don't want to take it too too seriously. But in
- 19:41Speaker 1: the real world, yes, I should be examining somethings. But
- 19:49Speaker 1: in my escapist world sometimes I need it to end
- 19:53Speaker 1: at Return of the Jedi.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Yeah that's fair.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Yep, yep. And I you know, I probably won't even
- 20:01Speaker 1: see the new movie. I'll wait and see what people say.
- 20:05Speaker 2: But there's a new movie.
- 20:07Speaker 1: With the Mandalorian and Grogu yep. Oh, Burger King has
- 20:11Speaker 1: a whole menu based on it. Really, Yes, how little
- 20:15Speaker 1: I know? Okay, yes, not a sponsor. Not a sponsor
- 20:19Speaker 1: by the way, Yeah, I'll see. But I've also just been,
- 20:27Speaker 1: as I've been very open about on the show, I
- 20:29Speaker 1: have been depressed and hyper fixated lately, and so getting
- 20:34Speaker 1: me out of the house requires like luring me with
- 20:38Speaker 1: something uh perfect. Yeah, not even a Star Wars movie
- 20:45Speaker 1: is always enough. Sometimes it needs to be something else also,
- 20:51Speaker 1: But I'm coming out of that slowly. Yes, yes, it's yes. Well,
- 20:57Speaker 1: one thing I do love and I would love for
- 21:00Speaker 1: you listeners to send in some of you I have
