- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Good evening, everyone, and thank you all so much for joining us on our speakers this evening.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: My name is Teri Ann Trebet and I'll be moderating our conversation this evening.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: We are looking forward to a really interesting conversation powered by credit bank
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: on powering SME growth in Kenya.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: As we know, the small and micro enterprises are the engine of Kenya's economic growth.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: Our conversation this evening will be looking
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: at how credit bank has positioned its presence from a branch perspective.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: How it's looking at the digital growth and how the bank is looking
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: at accessible financing for SMEs across the country.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: And of course, SME financing is a big component.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: No matter which report you look at, this is one of the big things that all SMEs are looking at.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: And of course,
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: our discussion will be looking at how the bank,
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Mass Credit Bank,
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: will be looking at accessible financing for SMEs across the country.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: And myself as an SME, of course, this is a conversation that cuts very close.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: So the discussion will cover that.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: We'll also look at how branch teams are balancing underwriting discipline.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: With the speed of how SMEs is to grow,
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: and this is one of the things that we cannot underestimate.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: SMEs are growing at an unprecedented pace, but
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: a bank catching up or a lender's catching up.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: I'd like to introduce my guest this evening,
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Charles Kibara, the Chief Manager Operations and Branches at Credit Bank.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Charles, thank you so much for joining us on our conversation this evening.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: We're really looking forward to this conversation because,
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: as I mentioned earlier,
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: SMEs power the growth of Kenya's economy and credit bank with your history,
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: with all the wonderful things that we've heard about credit banks through the years.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: That small business and the SME is also central to your story as credit bank.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: So as we kick off,
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Charles,
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Introduce yourself to us and tell us a little bit about Credit Bank
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: and why this conversation matters to you as an individual and also as a bank.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: Thank you, Torian, and thank you, Mwango Spaces, for hosting this particular discussion.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: And Charles Kibara has already introduced Chief Manager Operations and Branches at Credit Bank.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: Credit Bank is a fully-fledged commercial bank established 40 years ago.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: We are truly 40 years.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: And our mandate is to serve the SMEs.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: We also serve corporates.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: We also do personal banking, but we are more focused on SMEs.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: And I believe that is why we are here to re-earn, to discuss what we have to offer to the SMEs.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much, Charles.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: And as we say as Kenyans,
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: the majority of us are in the SME space where we are running businesses
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: and credit bank has clearly positioned itself to power the growth of SMEs.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Just introduce us a little bit first before we get into the conversation to credit bank.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: If we do have somebody in the audience who has not been engaged with credit bank,
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: just give us an introduction to credit bank.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: As mentioned, Credit Mark is now 40 years, a full-reflect commercial bank.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: We have 16 branches.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: Eight of them are in Nairobi.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: The others are in the main towns in Kenya.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: Talking of Kisumu, Mombasa, Eldoret, Meru, Vika, Machakos.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: So we are mainly in the main town.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: But we serve our customers in all the 47 counties through digital channels.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: Credit Bank is working on listing to the Nairobi Stock Exchange.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: We are in discussion with NSE,
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: and I'm sure when the time comes,
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: we'll be able to announce, but we are working on that.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Tell us a little bit about your branch network as an access point for SME growth
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: across Kenya.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: What's your branch network looking like and what are some of the things
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: that small businesses can look at when they're looking at which bank to work with
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: across Kenya?
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: As mentioned,
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: we are 16 branches,
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: eight of them in the Nairobi and the metropolitan area,
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: that is including Rungai, and Kitangela.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: Outside there,
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: we are in Vika,
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: we are in Meru,
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: we are in Nakuru,
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: we are in Kisumo, Eldoret, Kisi, we are in Machakos, we are in Mombasa.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: Basically covering all the main towns in Kenya,
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: but working to also have physical locations in other areas,
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: in the 47 counties in the near future,
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: but we are available in the digital channels to all our customers in Kenya and in
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: the diaspora.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Fantastic.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: Tell us a little bit about the diaspora offering.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Of course, as Kenyans, we are rated globally as some of the most digitally active natives.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: What's in it for diasporans when it comes to credit bank?
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: Tell us a little bit about that, Charles.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: We're prepared to serve our diaspora customers.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: First of all,
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: our diaspora customers can be able to open their accounts online through
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: an online EKYC solution wherever they are.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: Whatever time of the day or geographical location,
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: we can be able to open an account online with credit bank.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: Apart from that, we have established digital access points.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: We have mobile banking and internet banking,
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: which they can use to transact wherever they are in the group.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: We have other online solutions.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: And we have a fully-fledged 24-7 customer service center that is able
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: to serve our customers whenever they are.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: And we continue to serve our customers within our tagline, My Fred, My Bank.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: Perhaps you can just turn us, turning digital access into...
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: Financing access beyond transactions can an NCME actually move through
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: the financing journey when you're looking at application,
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: a document for verification, disbursement.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: Tell us a little bit more about that, especially with pay bill integration.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: What does it look like for somebody who's running an actual business now working
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: with credit bank in that space?
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: As private bank,
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: we recognize that SMEs are busy people and they need to be served wherever they are.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: So we've put in place measures to ensure
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: that our customers can be served wherever they are through online banking.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: Our customers can be able to do all their transactions online and the same will be online.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: Some of them will be done same day, immediate.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: Others will be queued.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: If their customers request We request checkbooks.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: The same can be placed online.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: And once the checks are available, they can be delivered to them.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: The same customers can be called to come and collect them at the nearest branches.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: But in terms of also financial access, in terms of ready, we have online.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: Our SME customers can actually be able to access access.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: Our SME
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: customers can also be able to borrow digital loans and that has been enabled
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: by the fact that we have been able to invest in digital credit scoring solutions so
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: that those customers,
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: those requests can actually be scored and approvals can be given online.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: So I think that's quite an interesting point,
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: especially when it comes to credit scoring SMEs online.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: If we can just briefly look at turning digital access into financing access beyond transactions.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: You've told us a little bit about how the process has moved online.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: So if I'm a small business, what does that mean to me?
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: I know we of course have to have a good credit rating.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: But what does it mean to me when you say we've got digital access to online credit rating?
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: Once you have an account with us, then your credit rating is good.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: Then you are able to get,
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: for example,
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: if you are an SME who wants to bid to a government organization
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: or county government,
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: you can be able to get your bid board online within a matter of minutes
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: without visiting the branch.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: Meaning that as an SME,
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: then you'll be able to participate in the business of Bidding for business in
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: the government and county government, national government and county.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: Oh, wow.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: That's fantastic.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: I just want us to move from that into another topic
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: where customer deposits have grown to over 22 billion shillings.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: Operationally, how does that funding growth translate into...
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: What a specific branch can actually lend to SMEs in its area?
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: And is there a formal process connecting branch level deposit performance
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: to branch level SME lending capacity?
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: And I believe this is a problem that many SMEs who are already lending with banks actually have.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: As a bank,
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: we are in the business of intermediation,
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: that is getting deposits and on the other side,
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: giving out loans to SME and other businesses that require finance.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: So we ensure and balance and ensure that all our SME borrowers
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: Who meet our credit list criteria,
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: are able to get finance,
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: are able to be advised and get finance,
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: at a very good rate,
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: and also to ensure that if you are good SME,
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: then that your loan will be processed within a very short time,
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: within the timelines of the month.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: We endeavor as a bank to support all our customers and that means those
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: who have deposits with us and those who don't have deposits with us,
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: but they have current accounts with us and they have financing needs.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: As a bank,
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: our role is to receive deposits and to read the same deposits to those customers
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: who require Financing support.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: There are those customers who probably require breeding finance.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: They require LPOs.
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: They require short term loans, survey advances.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: As a bank,
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: that is our role,
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: but also to ensure that the lending that we do is secure and that once we read
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: to you This term loan you'll be able to repay so that we can read to the next person
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: who is waiting on the other side, on the other branch of the bank.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: Well, thank you so much.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: For sharing that because it is really important for somebody who's looking to apply
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: for a loan to understand what that process really looks like.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: Especially,
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: as I mentioned earlier,
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: when we look at approaching a bank, we look at it as an individual.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: So we're looking at the branch we go to.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: We're looking at the relationship we have with either the branch manager
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: the relationship manager or just the person that we speak to.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: When we get to the bank.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: Charles, tell us a little bit.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: The MSME book contracted through 2023 to 2025 as part of a deliberate de-risking exercise.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: What changed operationally at a branch level?
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: And I mentioned branch level.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: Because as I mentioned,
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: this is where the touchpoint is between the bank and the person who's banking.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: So just tell us a little bit about what that looks like
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: and what changed operationally and what's changing now
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: the bank reopens its appetite for SME growth for a population.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: We say Kenyans...
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: Some of the most entrepreneurial people across the African continent
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: and credit bank is positioning itself within that space.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: So when it comes to that operational shift, what does it look like for you as a bank?
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: What we have done over the period that you have mentioned,
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: 2023 to 2025,
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: we have recalibrated our risk models just to ensure that there's more due diligence
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: for the High risk credit proposals,
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: while at the same time ensuring that for the low risk credit proposals,
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: we are making it easy through automated risk analysis and approvals.
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: And basically then what we are saying is that for certain borrowings that are deemed
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: to be high risk, we take them through More due diligence, more centralization.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: We look at it more at the head office.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: We look at it more and as we easen it out for the role risk proposal.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: That means for the SMEs who are coming to borrow a certain amount that is not high,
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: the SME has a good risk rating.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: We are able to actually Risk analyze the same automatically and give the loan
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: as fast as possible while we take more time with the high exposures,
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: high risk trade proposals, just to ensure that depositors' money remains secure.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: And it is the central line that depositors' money is secure.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Charles, tell us about the turnaround time.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: What's the actual turnaround time for an SME loan application?
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: When myself,
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: as an SME,
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: submits my application for a loan to this investment,
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: and we're specifically in that process,
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: documentation,
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: credit committee sign-off,
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: collateral verification, Do you see the biggest opportunity to speed things up?
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: Perhaps because of your experience within that space,
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: just top up what advice would you have for SMEs to be able to get financing easier
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: when they have all their papers in order?
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: Once you make an application for a loan to credit bank,
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: Timelines will depend from the kind of room that you apply.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: As mentioned,
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: it could be that you just want a bid board,
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: which you can actually apply online and you're able to get it immediately.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: Probably,
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: Teriyan,
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: you just want a summary advance,
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: which you can also get online, and you can actually get it immediately.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: Going to other kind of loans,
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: other kind of loans,
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: probably you want an asset finance, and you meet all the criteria that is required.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: That may not take long.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: If it is a loan...
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: Whose security could be ratted security,
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: that may take some bit more time due to ratted security,
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: affection,
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: and legal due diligence that takes about two or three months,
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: which again is beyond our control.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: So my response to you is that it depends on the kind of loan that you are applying,
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: but most important is that terry and that's You already have an account with us.
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: The documentation is okay.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: Credit history is okay.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: Then we'll be able to process the loan as fast as possible.
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: But also to mention that our relationship officers will be able to guide you.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: In the documentation process and in the application process,
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: just as I mentioned, we are a friendly band.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: My friend, my band.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: But just looking at areas of improvement,
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: probably we are seeing a lot of improvement in the government registries to
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: the digitalization of government registries.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: That is paying to quicken things up.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: So I believe that the time that we,
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: all the banks,
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: not only credit we are taking,
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: the process that it's about security will come down as we continue.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: I want us to look at the co-banking platform and the role it plays in business.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: That the current platform does not yet support.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: And I think the reason we're really stressing on this,
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: Charles,
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: is because at the end of the day,
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: the key target or the key customer is the small business that just wants
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: to get access to credit in order to grow their business, Charles.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: The integrity of the co-banking system cannot be inside.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: It's important.
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: At Credit Bank, we are running T24.
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: T24 by Terminals is the RedBing co-banking system in the world with over 950 banks,
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: Aminok Tier 1 banks running on T24.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: It was declared last year as the best co-banking system by Euromoney and also
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: in USA is the best co-banking system.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: So that gives us an edge in terms of the way we are able
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: to process our customers' transactions as fast enough.
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: We are able to integrate to our SME, our corporates.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: Through APIs,
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: we are able to integrate to them so that most of their transactions,
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: they can actually land them at the safety of their office.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: We are also proud to say that we are looking at an upgrade for the same T24.
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: And once we do the upgrade,
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: we are looking at more AI power that will have a core banking system
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: that will be able to be AI ready, more crowd ready.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: So we are looking at that just to ensure
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: that we can continue serving our customers faster, much,
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: much better,
- 20:03SPEAKER_01: but also ensuring that the integrity of customers' data remains paramount.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: As we continue with this conversation,
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: when we come to the end,
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: you'll tell us a little bit more about what that platform means for SMEs
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: who are either interested in joining credit bank or already part of credit bank.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: Tell us a little bit about delivering trade finance beyond Nairobi.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: Naturally,
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: when a lot of people look at trade finance,
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: unfortunately, it's looked at from capital city or the big towns perspective.
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: But we're seeing an emergence of bid bonds,
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: performance guarantees,
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: letters of credit,
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: which can or are helping SME compete for tender and cross-border trade.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: Tell us, how is that specialized capability actually delivered to a business banking?
- 20:59SPEAKER_00: Another town like Kisi or Eldorate or where I come from, Kitale.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: How is that handled locally or rooted through a central team?
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: Thank you for mentioning Trade Finance, and indeed, Credit Bank is known for Trade Finance.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: In the year 2021,
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: we were affected by the King Award as the best bank in Trade Finance,
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: and we remain among the best banks in Trade Finance.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: We have invested in technical capability.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: Invested in human resources.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: We've invested in systems just to ensure that we remain among the best banks in trade finance.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: And as already mentioned,
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: for bid boards,
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: which is the primary instrument for an SME to enter into a government business,
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: we are already online on that.
- 21:59SPEAKER_01: An SME, wherever you are,
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: you can actually Login to our Bitboard solutions and apply and get
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: that Bitboard online without visiting any branch.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: For the other sophisticated instruments,
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: like the raters of credit,
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: The APGs and the PGs,
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: which require more due diligence,
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: the same can be applied through our branch network.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: The same will be processed through our credit origination systems, which are actually online.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: So through our branch teams,
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: the same will be processed same day or in a matter of few days so that
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: a decision can be made as fast as possible to facilitate trade in any part of
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: the country.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: One of the bigger markets we're now seeing is the diaspora.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: And they're really now paying attention to what's happening back home.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: And I'm curious about how Credit Bank is serving diaspora-linked SME capital.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: So for diaspora client channeling savings back home
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: through Numbani diaspora banking,
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: and perhaps with that you can tell us a little bit about
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: the Numbani diaspora banking, what does the operational handle look like?
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: If that money is meant to support a family business or an SME backing can you?
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: We have a diaspora product called Numbani Diaspora Accounts
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: that has been specifically curated for our diaspora customers.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: And as mentioned,
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: our diaspora customers can be able to open their accounts online
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: without being required to visit any of our branches.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: They can be able to open their accounts wherever they are,
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: whether in USA,
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: Middle East, Europe,
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: by just logging into our website and going to open an account,
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: they'll be able to open a diaspora account.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: And once they open our customer service,
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: officers will be able to reach out to them and guide them on any requirement
- 24:25SPEAKER_01: that they may require.
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: But their account will actually be available for them.
- 24:29SPEAKER_01: In terms of remittance solutions, we've invested on remittance solutions.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: We have a remittance solution called RIA,
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: remittance solution,
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: where our diaspora customers can actually be able to deposit money Directly
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: to their accounts.
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: But also to mention that this real rental solution is actually a solution
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: that has been curated to also work with other financial service providers.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: And we have provided this to Sarkos, a number of Sarkos in Kenya.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: They are using our rails to serve their diaspora customers wherever they are.
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: So that their diaspora customers can use their rails and deposit money
- 25:20SPEAKER_01: into their circle accounts.
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: I think that is very important.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: Apart from that, we have a dedicated customer service, a unit that operates 24 seven.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: So taking care of the various timelines and geographical time zones.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: We have mobile banking, internet banking.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: And I believe that our customers,
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: wherever they are,
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: our Neospra customers,
- 25:47SPEAKER_01: wherever they are,
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: they can be able to operate their accounts with us as if they are still in Kenya
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: without any gap.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's fantastic.
- 25:58SPEAKER_00: For a diaspora client to actually operate without any gap,
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: because one of the main issues is trust for diaspora client,
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: but for them to see that there's no gap,
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: definitely you are providing a service that gives them the peace of mind for them
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: to be able to do that.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: Let's talk a little bit about branch staff as growth partners and not just as processors.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: Do branch relationship teams offer SME clients any hands-on support,
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: cash flow guidance,
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: helping prepare for loan application,
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: or is it just branch relationship or branch involvement at
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: a largely transactional space?
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: I think that also as an individual and as an SME,
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: because mostly When we approach,
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: even the bank that we've been banking with for years, it never feels very personal.
- 26:55SPEAKER_00: And I feel like if it did from a branch staff perspective,
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: when our branch managers look at us as growth partners
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: and not just people they're processing either loans for,
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: there's a ceiling or I feel as an individual that this would make
- 27:11SPEAKER_00: so much more sense.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: How is credit bank working towards growing your staff towards the position
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: as growth partners for your clients?
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: Our dedicated grant managers and RMs are indeed very well trained.
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: And I want to promise that our staff for the branches are leading the spirit
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: of my friend, my bank.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: And they are working with our customers,
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: not just as transaction facilitators, but also as transaction.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: They are able to work with our customers.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: To package any application that they may require for lending, advise them on many other areas.
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: Because as a bank,
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: we realize that most of our customers,
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: inasmuch as they are banking with us,
- 28:07SPEAKER_01: we realize that is a financial literacy in Kenya.
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: Indeed, citing the FinAccess report of 2024 is only at 42%.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: So when our customers come to our branches,
- 28:25SPEAKER_01: we realize that for some of us, indeed,
- 28:28SPEAKER_01: even digital services like internet banking,
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: when we talk about trade finance,
- 28:35SPEAKER_01: some of those services may require some guidance to a certain extent.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: And we have trade staff who are able to hard hold our customers just to ensure
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: that some of the decisions that our customers are making They are able to add value
- 28:51SPEAKER_01: to it and indeed leaving our spirit of my friend, my bank.
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much for that.
- 28:59SPEAKER_00: I think the points I've raised are really important as we cannot divorce them
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: from what's happening within the SME space and how we continually look at the role
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: of relationship managers and just the relationship between us
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: and the banks.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about balancing the speed and discipline at the branch level.
- 29:19SPEAKER_00: And the reason we keep insisting on the branch level is because that's where we
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: as small businesses get the relationship with the bank.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: Given the assets quality pressure that drove last year's provisioning,
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: how do branch teams balance moving quickly for SME clients against
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: the underwriting discipline the bank now requires?
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: Does that tension ever slow things down more than clients would like, Charles?
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: Just to ensure that we have a balance on that,
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: we've retrained all our branch teams on credit risk analysis just to ensure
- 29:58SPEAKER_01: that they can be able to pick on those applications that require faster decisions.
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: So that the same can be frustrates and those that require salary due diligence
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: and risk analysis.
- 30:13SPEAKER_01: We've also invested in credit calling softwares to make us make decisions even faster.
- 30:20SPEAKER_01: For those applications that are deemed to be risk risky,
- 30:26SPEAKER_01: low exposures, let's talk about salary advances, stock compete boards.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: We've invested in solutions that are actually able to score them automatically
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: and approve the same Online,
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: just to ensure that those customers that are coming for raw risk,
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: raw exposure application,
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: the same are archery, approved, scored, and approved online.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: And those that require the module diligence,
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: then the same can be fast-tracked through grading scoring softwares.
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: And of course,
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: a really important point because we constantly,
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: as clients and as customers,
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: just want to know how can we get more engagement with the bank,
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: not just as a partner level,
- 31:18SPEAKER_00: but as an institution,
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: but also is a bank thinking about the future of our organizations and using that
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: then building processes or programs that will help us as a business move forward as
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: an organization.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: Charl, let's talk about governance standards.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: ShowCup's entry brought DFI alignment governance and ESG standards at an institutional level.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: Has that translated into any visible change in how branch staff are trained
- 31:53SPEAKER_00: or how SME clients are served day to day?
- 31:56SPEAKER_00: Or has its impact stayed mostly at the board and policy level?
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: And of course,
- 32:03SPEAKER_00: we hope,
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: or at least I hope,
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: that it hasn't just stayed at that very high level and that it has trickled down to
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: the people that it should meet.
- 32:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, indeed,
- 32:13SPEAKER_01: ShowCup are very strong on governance and ESG and their presence
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: at credit bank has come adversely and a requirement that we reroute
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: at all our policies and all our procedures to ensure that we meet
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: the stringent requirements that ShowCup applies in all their partners.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: So I can assure you that we've rewrote all our policies,
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: procedures,
- 32:44SPEAKER_01: and SLAs, and we've embedded their strict requirements on governance and ESG.
- 32:52SPEAKER_01: So as we sit now,
- 32:53SPEAKER_01: I believe we are much better with the show cap being on board
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: because we are applying their best practices in those areas.
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much for sharing what you're doing.
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: The S&E space,
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: as we say,
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: is growing and it's funding Kenya's economic growth and the role that we play and
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: the role that you play as a bank will really make a big difference into
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: The overall growth picture of SME growth in the country.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: I want us to move to operational readiness.
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: With a demutualization and an NSE listing underway,
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: what's changing operationally when you look at systems,
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: when you look at compliance processes,
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: reporting to prepare the branch network for that transition,
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: especially without disrupting service to SME clients?
- 33:49SPEAKER_00: What does that look like, Charles?
- 33:51SPEAKER_01: One area that is already mentioned is the work that has been done by the advisory
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: through Show Cup,
- 33:57SPEAKER_01: just to ensure that we have very much aligned on the governance and ESG.
- 34:03SPEAKER_01: Another area is ISO 9001-2015 certification.
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: We were certified a few years ago.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: And we were recertified this year.
- 34:14SPEAKER_01: And what that ensures is that we are forced to look at all our policies.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: We are forced to look at all our products and procedures just to ensure
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: that they are customer centric, they are risk approved.
- 34:30SPEAKER_01: And that also ensures that we focus on continuous improvement.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: So that by the time we are getting to the NSE,
- 34:39SPEAKER_01: then we will be ready For the scrutiny that is required,
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: we'll have a customer base that is satisfied and we will have a better view
- 34:51SPEAKER_01: of our risks and opportunities just to ensure that the bank remains sustainable.
- 34:57SPEAKER_00: We are quickly coming to the end of our conversation now,
- 35:01SPEAKER_00: but I think it's important for us to just look at operational readiness behind
- 35:06SPEAKER_00: the listing.
- 35:07SPEAKER_00: So as you prepare for that,
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: What's that preparation like and how are you cushioning
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: or protecting your SME clients?
- 35:15SPEAKER_01: We've invested a lot in risk management in the last few years.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: We have a forefraid risk department.
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: We have a forefraid legal department.
- 35:27SPEAKER_01: We have also a fully free internal audit department,
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: and we are beefing up the human resource aspect in those departments.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: We are working on,
- 35:38SPEAKER_01: as mentioned earlier,
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: we are looking at a co-banking system upgrades,
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: even as they look at our products to just ensure then
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: that all our products Risk-proofed,
- 35:52SPEAKER_01: and we are continuously looking at the opportunities in the market to ensure that
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: the bank will continue to participate and have our SMEs to help them scale and grow,
- 36:04SPEAKER_01: even as the bank continues to grow and eyes listing at Nairobi Stock Exchange.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: Of course,
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: with more liquidity sitting in government securities and CBK placements,
- 36:17SPEAKER_00: What operational signals,
- 36:19SPEAKER_00: branch level demand,
- 36:21SPEAKER_00: improved repayment patterns would tell you it's time to direct more of
- 36:26SPEAKER_00: that liquidity back into SME lending?
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: And indeed, we've seen the macroeconomic factors de-raising.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: We've seen the central bank pouring on banks, commercial banks, to read more.
- 36:40SPEAKER_01: And that has been signaled by the CBR rate that has made stable since April.
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: If you look at the U.S. dollar, the same as we made stable.
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: At the bank,
- 36:51SPEAKER_01: we've seen more inflows coming from our customers being paid,
- 36:56SPEAKER_01: whether they are their health facilities, they have their bills with the share.
- 37:01SPEAKER_01: We can see.
- 37:03SPEAKER_01: More info is coming from that area.
- 37:05SPEAKER_01: We can see pending bills by KF Akura being paid.
- 37:10SPEAKER_01: I think that's an environment that we are not having in the last two years.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: We can see more payment coming in.
- 37:17SPEAKER_01: So that even those customers who were struggling with the installments,
- 37:22SPEAKER_01: we can see that coming out very well.
- 37:25SPEAKER_01: So indeed,
- 37:25SPEAKER_01: that is a signal that to Credit Bank and to all other banks,
- 37:29SPEAKER_01: that this is a good time to support our SMEs and they are actually looking
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: for more business.
- 37:35SPEAKER_01: They are very motivated.
- 37:36SPEAKER_01: When the SMEs have their pending bills paid, they are able to do more business.
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: And we are here as a bank, as a commercial bank.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: Ready and willing to work with them to scale their business to the next one.
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: Charles,
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: as we come to the end of our conversation,
- 37:53SPEAKER_00: let's talk about what success looks like in three years.
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: From your seat,
- 37:58SPEAKER_00: running operations and branches,
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: what would tell you credit bank powered SMA growth in three years?
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: More SMAs banked,
- 38:08SPEAKER_00: faster financing,
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: specific businesses you can point to as having scaled The bank support.
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: And I guess we're just asking,
- 38:16SPEAKER_00: what does success look like for you based on everything you've told us tonight?
- 38:21SPEAKER_00: What does that look like in three years?
- 38:24SPEAKER_01: As a bank, we are looking to partner with the SMEs to grow together.
- 38:31SPEAKER_01: We are looking at setting aside $1 billion each year in the next three years
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: to finance SME, be able to scale.
- 38:39SPEAKER_01: As a bank,
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: we are also Looking at partnering with other financial service providers,
- 38:49SPEAKER_01: talk of fintechs, to scale the payment solutions in this country.
- 38:55SPEAKER_01: We are already partnering with several fintechs
- 38:59SPEAKER_01: to provide last mile payment solutions in terms of casering.
- 39:05SPEAKER_01: In terms of check clearing,
- 39:07SPEAKER_01: whether it is circles,
- 39:09SPEAKER_01: so that those circles,
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: those financial institutions that are not able to go to the clearinghouse,
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: we are able to take them through our rents.
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: Those fintechs that are not able to settle through pestering,
- 39:24SPEAKER_01: we are also helping them to settle and process pestering.
- 39:29SPEAKER_01: And that has a cascading effect.
- 39:32SPEAKER_01: Has a bigger reach to all the SMEs in Kenya.
- 39:36SPEAKER_01: So we are looking at that.
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: So in terms of ensuring that we have more and more,
- 39:42SPEAKER_01: we are partnering with more and more financial institutions,
- 39:45SPEAKER_01: more and more free debts, just to grow the payment services in this country.
- 39:51SPEAKER_01: Even as we support more SMEs through RENDY,
- 39:54SPEAKER_01: through financial Training through financial support.
- 40:00SPEAKER_01: In terms of businesses that we've been able to successfully work with,
- 40:05SPEAKER_01: and we are proud as a bank having worked with them and taken them to the next level.
- 40:12SPEAKER_01: We had for many years partnered with MCF and I am proud as credit bank.
- 40:18SPEAKER_01: We were able to hold some medical facilities from small clinics,
- 40:24SPEAKER_01: and now they are very big hospitals.
- 40:26SPEAKER_01: In the past, we've also a savvy in agriculture to finance agriculture startups.
- 40:34SPEAKER_01: And some of the agriculture startups are now big business entrepreneurs and processors.
- 40:41SPEAKER_01: We've also worked with contractors and we prayed as a credit bank that we'd continue
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: to work with them.
- 40:47SPEAKER_01: Even as we explore new frontiers on APIs to just help and work
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: with these SMEs even might be better.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: Just to ensure that our SMEs then will be able to do most of their banking
- 41:03SPEAKER_01: the safety of their offices in the next three years.
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much, Charles, and especially for just sharing what success looks like.
- 41:13SPEAKER_00: Because sometimes we look at success from very different perspectives,
- 41:16SPEAKER_00: but to get the honor of listening to you as a bank serving SMEs
- 41:23SPEAKER_00: and just understanding what success looks like.
- 41:27SPEAKER_00: So we thank you so much for making time to be here with us this evening.
- 41:31SPEAKER_00: Just before we wrap up,
- 41:32SPEAKER_00: Charles, maybe something I might not have asked and something you think you might...
- 41:37SPEAKER_00: Just tell us as we wrap up before I call it tonight,
- 41:43SPEAKER_00: what are your final words for this evening?
- 41:45SPEAKER_01: Thank you, Torian.
- 41:46SPEAKER_01: I also thank Mwango's business and all those who have logged into this discussion.
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: As a bank, our biggest promise is we remain available for you.
- 42:00SPEAKER_01: We remain friendly.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: We remain friendly.
- 42:03SPEAKER_01: Available for you to come and partner with you and provide a solution that you may require.
- 42:08SPEAKER_01: We are ready to discuss with you and come up with a solution,
- 42:12SPEAKER_01: whether it's a technical solution or it's a financial solution or
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: a payment solution.
- 42:17SPEAKER_01: We are open, ready and willing to work with you.
- 42:21SPEAKER_01: And thank you very much to Ryan for the opportunity.
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much Charles for making time to be with us this evening as we had
- 42:29SPEAKER_00: A conversation on how credit bank is powering SMA growth.
- 42:35SPEAKER_00: In Kenya,
- 42:35SPEAKER_00: of course,
- 42:35SPEAKER_00: this conversation has been examining how credit bank's operations
- 42:40SPEAKER_00: and branched Banking faction are powering SME growth in Kenya from
- 42:46SPEAKER_00: a Tier 3 lender rebuilding its MSME book after a deliberate de-risking phase,
- 42:55SPEAKER_00: as you have heard from Charles between 2023 and 2025.
- 42:59SPEAKER_00: And this evening,
- 43:01SPEAKER_00: we have endeavoured to unpack how branch presence,
- 43:05SPEAKER_00: digital channels that Charles has told us about from CB Connect,
- 43:09SPEAKER_00: The trade finance capabilities actually translate into deposit growth and
- 43:16SPEAKER_00: so much more in terms of accessible financing for SMEs across the country.
- 43:22SPEAKER_00: This discussion has also covered how Branch team balance,
- 43:27SPEAKER_00: underwriting discipline with a speed SMEs need to grow
- 43:31SPEAKER_00: in what operational readiness looks like as the bank prepares for demutualization
- 43:38SPEAKER_00: and listing on the Nairobi Securities Exchange and courted Thank you so much
- 43:44SPEAKER_00: for hosting us this evening and of course for our guest credit bank.
- 44:01SPEAKER_00: My name is Terri-Ann Chabett.
- 44:02SPEAKER_00: It's been an absolute pleasure.
- 44:15SPEAKER_00: To moderate this conversation,
- 44:17SPEAKER_00: I'd like to thank each and every one of us who has made it to join us this evening.
- 44:22SPEAKER_00: Once again, a big thank you to our host for this evening.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: That's Mwango Capital and of course, Credit Bank for being here to tell us the story.
- 44:32SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much for making time to be with us this evening.
- 44:35SPEAKER_00: And thank you for sharing with us what Credit Bank is doing to power SME growth in Kenya.
- 44:42SPEAKER_01: And thank you very much.
- 44:43SPEAKER_01: Terry Han, thank you Mwango Capitou and all our listeners today.
- 44:47SPEAKER_00: Thank you all and good night.
