- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:09Every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:12the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:17Happy July 1st, everyone. This is so wild.
- 0:22Holy shit. I am so ready for July.
- 0:25I'm so ready for a new month. I am so ready to say goodbye to
- 0:30June. You guys know June was a really
- 0:33horrible month for me, so I am so ready to move on.
- 0:36But I hope you guys had a good weekend.
- 0:38I had a pretty good weekend. I worked a little bit on
- 0:41Saturday. I'm really going to try and find
- 0:44like a good balance because I've had to be working full, I would
- 0:49say like 6 to even seven days a week, like full days, like 10-12
- 0:54hour days for the last few months.
- 0:56So I'm really hoping that in the next coming weeks I can like
- 1:00figure out a better routine for myself and have more downtime.
- 1:04But I had a good Saturday night. Sean and I went to IKEA and
- 1:09we're starting to like get the wheels turning on how we're
- 1:11going to renovate our apartment. So we bought a place last year
- 1:15and it needs so much work, like so much work.
- 1:19We need to do all three bathrooms and the kitchen and we
- 1:24need to double glaze the windows and things like that.
- 1:25So anyways, it got me excited for that.
- 1:28And then we, we just like ended up buying some stuff at IKEA to
- 1:31start making our house feel a little bit more homey.
- 1:34We kind of got in the trap of like, OK, well, since we need to
- 1:37renovate, let's not buy any new furniture.
- 1:40Let's not like set it up nicely when we first moved in because
- 1:43we were like, whatever, we're going to end up, you know,
- 1:45renovating and finding the style that we want and having to get
- 1:50new stuff that suits that style eventually anyways.
- 1:52But it's probably going to be at least another six months until
- 1:56we start renovating. So we decided to bite the bullet
- 2:00and be like, we need to set this place up a little bit more like
- 2:02cozy and you know, just like make it feel a bit more like
- 2:05ourselves. So anyways, we started doing
- 2:07that on the weekend and it made me feel very good.
- 2:09It made me feel but hopeful. It gave me something like a
- 2:12project to focus on that was not work related, which was nice
- 2:16because I haven't had that ever since I started Centennial.
- 2:21Now I'm joking, but like definitely not in the last
- 2:23probably like 12 months. So that was good.
- 2:26But yes, anyways, let's just get straight into the stories.
- 2:28So I have like 3:00-ish stories, like 2 1/2 stories for you guys.
- 2:33So the first story, of course, Clinton Kane has responded to
- 2:37Brooke Schofield's 15 part TikTok series.
- 2:40Also, I am sorry, I think I called her Brooke Schofield.
- 2:42I go back and forth every time I talk about her.
- 2:44I call her something different. It has been confirmed it is
- 2:47Brooke Schofield. In APR piece for Rolling Stone,
- 2:50a Rep for Clinton Kane responded to Brooke Schofield's
- 2:53accusations. So in case you missed it, last
- 2:56week Clinton posted a TikTok to promote his new album in which
- 2:59he called his ex-girlfriend Brooke out for yapping about
- 3:03their relationship that ended two years ago.
- 3:05Brooke has a podcast, as we know, with her best friend
- 3:07Hannah Mojo, and she occasionally tells the story of
- 3:10her relationship with Clinton because it was just so bizarre.
- 3:13So she's talked about it on canceled their podcast.
- 3:15She's talked about it in other interviews like this was
- 3:18definitely not the first time that she has addressed her
- 3:21relationship with him. Brooke saw this TikTok that
- 3:24Clinton posted and was basically like, oh, you want to call me
- 3:27out for yapping? I'll give you yapping.
- 3:29And she posted this video series exposing him essentially as a
- 3:33liar. So she said that his public
- 3:36narrative that his whole family died.
- 3:38He said that his mother, brother and father all died within the
- 3:41same year. That's been something he has
- 3:43been openly public about on different interviews and talked
- 3:46about how his music is like related or inspired by those
- 3:49events. She said that that was a lie,
- 3:52that his father was dead but the rest of his family was alive.
- 3:56She found his mom on Facebook. She was very much alive.
- 3:59And she also said that he is faking being Australian, that
- 4:03he's actually from Brunei, but he puts on this fake Australian
- 4:06accent in the public eye, although like, not always.
- 4:09Like sometimes he sounds American and sometimes he kind
- 4:13of sounds Australian. It's actually really hard to do
- 4:15an Australian accent. So yeah, his Australian accent
- 4:18is obviously not very good. And I'm sure any actual
- 4:20Australian people would be watching that being like this
- 4:22person is not Australian. But anyway, she said he is not
- 4:24from Australia. He claims that he's from Perth,
- 4:27that he grew up in Perth, but like he's not.
- 4:29So in the Rolling Stone piece, like I said, a Rep for him
- 4:32addressed all of this. So it says, quote, Clinton Kane
- 4:36and Brooks Schofield had a brief 3 month relationship over two
- 4:39years ago, reads a statement sent to Rolling Stone.
- 4:41Brooks recent comments regarding Clinton are untrue.
- 4:45The Rep says that the quote UN quote mother he referred to in
- 4:48the interview with Sang, as in Zack Sang.
- 4:50So the Zack Sang show, he talked about his mother that died was
- 4:53actually quote, a very special mother like figure in his
- 4:58teenage years who sadly passed, not his biological mother as was
- 5:03assumed. And then the statement
- 5:06continues, quote. Clinton regrets the way this
- 5:08devastating news was communicated at the time.
- 5:10Clinton genuinely felt that he had lost an irreplaceable mother
- 5:14figure. Clinton was and largely is
- 5:16estranged from his immediate family.
- 5:19OK. And then about him being
- 5:20Australian. Kane's Rep says he lived in
- 5:22Australia quote for a time as a child and quote considers
- 5:26Australia to be home. He has never been disingenuous
- 5:29about this. The statement reads OK and then
- 5:32the article ends by quote. The public rehashing of these
- 5:36details is only an attempt to bring attention and focus on
- 5:40Brooks podcast at the expense of tearing down another former
- 5:44boyfriend, a tactic she's become known for, reads the statement.
- 5:49In the years since this relationship took place, Clinton
- 5:52has moved forward and remains focused and committed on putting
- 5:55out new music. OK, so then Brooke, the next day
- 5:59was like, no, we're not doing this.
- 6:01So she responded to the article in her own TikTok series.
- 6:04So she posted two videos. The first one.
- 6:07This part is like one of my favorite elements of the story,
- 6:09which is like the random side quest he decided to go on when
- 6:13people started finding things out where he made-up an
- 6:15imaginary new woman who was a mother figure to him, who was
- 6:20actually the one who had died. OK Clinton genuinely felt like
- 6:24he had lost an irreplaceable mother figure.
- 6:26OK, this might hold up for the Zack Sang interview, but I was
- 6:30his girlfriend, OK? I was getting stories from like,
- 6:32the time he was born to the present, OK, With names, all
- 6:36right? Which is how I looked his little
- 6:37mom up to begin with, OK, It was one mom, all right?
- 6:41It's the same mom I heard about every single day.
- 6:43And that is the one he killed off.
- 6:45And that is the one who is chilling in Brunei.
- 6:48And then the second video she posted, she addressed the
- 6:51comment that she was doing all of this just for podcast
- 6:54listens. If they had done any research at
- 6:56all, they would know that the canceled podcast listeners have
- 6:58known this lore all along. OK, I brought this to my TikTok
- 7:02audience for one reason and one reason only.
- 7:04OK? It is because that man called me
- 7:07a yapper. Canceled amasses more listeners
- 7:10in one singular week than Clinton Kane has in an entire
- 7:13year. I'm sorry.
- 7:14So yes, obviously we are Team Brooke.
- 7:16The fact that they're trying to cover up Clinton's lies with
- 7:19more lies is so wild. This is such a bizarre PR
- 7:24tactic. I think it shows that it's quite
- 7:27possible he doesn't actually have APR team helping him with
- 7:30this. Brooks said that in one of her
- 7:32videos. She was like, I don't think he
- 7:33had. Oh, she didn't sorry, she didn't
- 7:35say. I don't think he has APR team.
- 7:36She said something along the lines of the fact that like
- 7:39she's unclear if it's Clinton or if it's APR team.
- 7:42And then somebody had commented on one of the video saying
- 7:44something about his PR team and she was like, with what money?
- 7:46Like with what money is he paying this publicist?
- 7:50So she seems to think that it's probably just him pretending to
- 7:54have a publicist or pretending to have a representative and
- 7:57it's actually him communicating this stuff because it's a pretty
- 8:00wild tactic. I think anyone who works in
- 8:03media or PR would tell you in this situation, there was enough
- 8:07Gray area and it was confusing enough that if they had just let
- 8:11Brooke post this series and Clinton had just not addressed
- 8:15it. I mean, he had just like Brooke
- 8:16has been talking about this for years on her podcast, like we
- 8:19said, like he's never addressed it before.
- 8:21Obviously, the series got a lot of attention, but he could have
- 8:25just ignored it the way that he's maintained ignoring it for
- 8:28the last however many years. And I think it would have gone
- 8:31over better. I think people would have just
- 8:33like kind of not forgotten about it because definitely he's his
- 8:36reputation's a bit tarnished, but I think it would have gone
- 8:39away. But this, them basically
- 8:41doubling down with more lies that are so obviously lies is
- 8:46actually just painting this as completely untrue.
- 8:49Whereas before, like his mother, his immediate family, like
- 8:52people hadn't come out and said like, he's not Australian, I'm
- 8:55his mom. I don't know why he's pretending
- 8:57that we're dead. You know, because he didn't have
- 8:59anyone in his life coming out and saying that consistently.
- 9:03Like, I know she talked about a comment she saw on a video from
- 9:05the Zack Sang show where someone's like, I grew up with
- 9:08this person, he's not from Australia.
- 9:10And I saw his mom last week. I know she said she saw that
- 9:13comment. But besides from that, like he
- 9:16doesn't have any of the people that he's claiming that are
- 9:18dead. Like, they're not coming forward
- 9:19and saying we're not dead. So there was always this Gray
- 9:22area there where, like, his story could have been true.
- 9:26Now it's just so obvious that he's just been completely lying
- 9:30about so much this whole time. It's such a wild strategy.
- 9:35I cannot believe that they did this.
- 9:37Anyways, that's the latest on that.
- 9:39I don't think we will ever hear about this again.
- 9:42I think Clinton and his camp will never want to discuss this
- 9:46again. And I think Brooke is kind of
- 9:48like, I don't want this severe and like tacky territory, so I
- 9:51think she's going to let it go too.
- 9:52Anyways, and the next story that I have for you guys is I wanted
- 9:57to give you some interesting insights that came out of Vidcon
- 9:592024 this weekend. So obviously, Vidcon is not
- 10:04anywhere close to as relevant as it used to be probably 10, even
- 10:08five years ago. It's definitely lost some
- 10:10relevance when it came back, I believe it was after it was shut
- 10:15down for COVID for a year or two, TikTok was the main
- 10:18sponsor. I think that was it.
- 10:19I think that's how that went down.
- 10:21But TikTok was the title sponsor for like a year or two there.
- 10:25Usually it's always YouTube and it was YouTube again this year
- 10:28because when TikTok was the title sponsor, I don't know if
- 10:30you guys remember, but there all that drama because they
- 10:33obviously set up, set up, what did I say like that set up all
- 10:37of these meet and greets for, you know, creators or whatever.
- 10:40And it really highlighted the difference between a Youtubers
- 10:45audience and a Tik Tokers audience and the engagement
- 10:48there because there was all these Tik Tokers that had
- 10:50hundreds of thousands of followers who set up meet and
- 10:54greets. Some of them had over a million
- 10:55followers and their lines for their meet and greets were
- 10:58completely empty. Like nobody went to see them and
- 11:01they were talking about this on TikTok.
- 11:03And this really highlighted to the industry, if you were paying
- 11:07attention, how impactful a YouTube subscriber is versus a
- 11:14TikTok follow or just how cheap a TikTok follow can be because
- 11:18they are cheap in comparison to other followers in a lot of
- 11:22ways. And so yes, I think that was
- 11:25like a big wake up call for the industry.
- 11:27And the event actually ended up going with YouTube again as the
- 11:29title sponsor after I think it was a bit derailed with TikTok
- 11:35as the title sponsor. So this year was YouTube again.
- 11:37And these are some insights that I got from Casey Lewis's sub
- 11:41stack after school. So like I said, YouTube was the
- 11:44title sponsor. And at one of the conferences or
- 11:47panels, I guess of the weekend, YouTube handed out their trends
- 11:51report. Well, I don't think they
- 11:52physically did. I think it was like on your
- 11:53phone. But you know, they gave out like
- 11:55a preview of their trends report that they publish every once in
- 11:58a while. So these are some interesting
- 12:00stats. 75% of Gen. Z respondents self identify as
- 12:05content creators, which is up by 25% since YouTube last published
- 12:11its trend reports. So that's really interesting.
- 12:14I mean, we've talked about it before, but like TikTok is so
- 12:16toxic. And the problem is that, and I
- 12:19believe that a lot of this is related to TikTok, but you know,
- 12:21the problem is that, you know, you can post on Instagram and
- 12:25you're just like, yeah, like I just I'm a user.
- 12:27Like I post on Instagram and I use Instagram for my personal
- 12:30life. But if you're posting on TikTok,
- 12:33you're more likely to identify as a creator.
- 12:34If you're creating video content, you're more likely to
- 12:36identify as a creator. And the thing with Gen.
- 12:39Z is like, you can't just not have TikTok.
- 12:40Like everybody has TikTok. It's it's like an Instagram,
- 12:43right? It's it is just kind of the
- 12:45status quo of that generation that you have TikTok and you
- 12:49probably post Tik Toks every once in a while.
- 12:51I think it's more common for older generations like
- 12:54millennials, Gen. X to have TikTok and scroll
- 12:57TikTok, but to never post. I think that this stat is
- 13:01indicative of the fact that to engage with social media for
- 13:05youth generations, even as part of that generation yourself,
- 13:09just as a regular person, you have to be creating content
- 13:12quote UN quote. Like you have to be creating
- 13:14video content in a lot of ways to actually be engaging with
- 13:18your peers. Whereas that's just never been
- 13:20the case before. Another stat is that 80% of fans
- 13:24use YouTube to consume the thing that they are fan of at least
- 13:28weekly. I mean, we talk about this all
- 13:30the time on this podcast. Like YouTube is so powerful.
- 13:34It is still right up there with the number one platforms that
- 13:38Gen. Z is obsessed with.
- 13:39There's such a misconception that Gen.
- 13:41Z has a short attention span. That's just not the truth.
- 13:45Like if they are interested in a topic, they will watch a video
- 13:49essay. There's a reason why commentary
- 13:51creators, drama channels, video essays are so popular and have
- 13:55been so popular for years. It's because Gen.
- 13:57Z is becoming the number one consumer of online content.
- 14:01And I'm not surprised at all that Gen.
- 14:03Z is obsessed with YouTube because we knew that you and I
- 14:06knew this us on the podcast, We knew this.
- 14:09And then the last stat that I wanted to share is that 47% of
- 14:12Gen. Z are part of a fandom that no
- 14:15one they know personally is also a part of.
- 14:18I relate to that so hard. I was part of the Trisha Paytas
- 14:20fandom. I didn't know a single person
- 14:22that even really knew who she was until like just a few years
- 14:26ago. And you know, I was, I was ride
- 14:28or die for her before it was cool to be OK.
- 14:32And I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing because she
- 14:34has been highly problematic. And I'm very aware of that now
- 14:37at Vidcon. TikTok didn't have much of A
- 14:40presence this year. Apparently neither did Snap or
- 14:42Pinterest. But Casey Lewis did say that
- 14:45TikTok at the activations that they did have were quote pushing
- 14:50longer videos a lot, which is super interesting.
- 14:53And I mean, it's unsurprising, right?
- 14:55They've been launching those features or like the longer
- 14:58video features or whatever over the past like year or two.
- 15:00So it's kind of no surprise, but I thought it was interesting to
- 15:04hear that TikTok, Snap and Pinterest didn't have very big
- 15:09presences at Vidcon. I think it does show that the
- 15:12relevance and the interest in Vidcon is waning.
- 15:16I'm not sure where they should go.
- 15:18Vidcon really started out as like a consumer event and then
- 15:22over the years it has shifted more towards the middle.
- 15:25I wouldn't say it's a total industry event or a total
- 15:28consumer event anymore. It's definitely a mix and I
- 15:30think sometimes that can work, but I don't know if it's working
- 15:34for Vidcon. I think they would probably do
- 15:36better if they just like leaned all the way in to industry.
- 15:39Anyways, guys, that is it for Mini Scroll today.
- 15:42Thank you so much for listening. Please remember to rate review
- 15:45and subscribe. It means so much.
- 15:46It helps me grow. It helps me keep going.
- 15:49I will talk to you guys tomorrow.
- 15:52All right, bye.
