Transcript
- 0:21Speaker 1: Well, welcome, let's dis mess it for Crumb Podcast. I'm sure,
- 0:23Speaker 1: who was? All right? We're back this week and we're
- 0:27Speaker 1: going to Texas.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Are you sure?
- 0:32Speaker 1: I am sure? I am sure. I had to think
- 0:35Speaker 1: about there for a second. You know, I've been been busy,
- 0:38Speaker 1: been doing things. You know. Well, it's confusing, Yes, it's
- 0:44Speaker 1: it's a confusing city because it's split between Arkansas and Texas.
- 0:49Speaker 2: And the name.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Yes, and we have deemed Arkansas as part of the
- 0:53Speaker 1: Southern situation due to the redneckness of it all, you know,
- 1:00Speaker 1: of course. Yes, all right, so we are going to
- 1:04Speaker 1: Texas this week and we are going way, way way
- 1:06Speaker 1: back to like the nineteen forties. But before we get
- 1:09Speaker 1: into that, I just want to talk about our Patreon.
- 1:12Speaker 1: So we have our patreon, Patreon, dot com plus Blessed
- 1:16Speaker 1: Us Miss Podcast. We have updated the tears, so there
- 1:20Speaker 1: are We've done a whole revamp and if you want
- 1:23Speaker 1: to know more about the revamp, go to the episode
- 1:25Speaker 1: before this, we did put the Friday episode out episode
- 1:28Speaker 1: out to everybody. That's our new shoot. The poo is
- 1:33Speaker 1: now called Sitting, Sipping and Bullshitting, which was partially Stew's rebrand. Yes, rebrand.
- 1:43Speaker 2: I didn't. I didn't want to rebrand to shoot the Poo,
- 1:45Speaker 2: but somebody did. I had a little sure, we're.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Trying to we're trying to do a whole thing. Okay,
- 1:51Speaker 1: if you go to that episode, you'll hear our whole
- 1:54Speaker 1: rendition of what we're trying to do. We're trying to
- 1:57Speaker 1: maybe like upgrade the podcast a little bit, make it
- 1:59Speaker 1: a little more professional. And my idea was that we
- 2:04Speaker 1: are on a porch, all of us, are all you listeners.
- 2:09Speaker 2: What we're in a closet.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Okay, we're in a we're in a closet, but we're
- 2:12Speaker 1: in a theoretical porch. Okay, if I could be sitting
- 2:16Speaker 1: on a porch talking to you everybody, I would, but
- 2:19Speaker 1: the acoustics are not great for them, so they are not.
- 2:22Speaker 1: So yeah, my ideal was, we are on a porch.
- 2:25Speaker 1: We have our Mason jars. We we do actually have
- 2:28Speaker 1: Mason jars right now, guys, Okay, we have a Mason jars.
- 2:31Speaker 1: They're full of something little something special, little something something,
- 2:34Speaker 1: a little strong something, and we are talking about true
- 2:37Speaker 1: crime in our lives and everything like that. So that
- 2:41Speaker 1: was the ideal behind re not rebranding, re vamping, revamping,
- 2:50Speaker 1: blessed this Mess of the True Ground podcast. We've been
- 2:52Speaker 1: doing this for eight years now, and we've always wanted
- 2:54Speaker 1: to kind of like streamline it, make it a community
- 2:59Speaker 1: thing like that, and so that's what we have done.
- 3:02Speaker 1: So if you'll notice there is a new cover art.
- 3:04Speaker 1: We've been working for a couple months on this, like
- 3:07Speaker 1: to get this all together, So we have a new
- 3:09Speaker 1: cover art. We have new tears on the Patreon that
- 3:12Speaker 1: you can go check out. We have new official Mason
- 3:16Speaker 1: jars that are going to say the Porch Crew because
- 3:18Speaker 1: we're on the porch, so our crew is the Porch Crew. Yes,
- 3:24Speaker 1: so yeah, I highly recommend going and checking out that
- 3:27Speaker 1: last episode that we put out on Friday to learn
- 3:30Speaker 1: more about all of the changes we' we're making. We're
- 3:33Speaker 1: also going to be streamlining these episodes that we're doing.
- 3:36Speaker 1: If you recall, I know, if you'll recall a long
- 3:42Speaker 1: long time ago when we first started this podcast, yes,
- 3:46Speaker 1: we were drunken fools. However, we went very in depth
- 3:50Speaker 1: on the cases and here of recent we just haven't
- 3:55Speaker 1: had the time. But I've been working hard the last
- 3:57Speaker 1: couple of months to get ahead and research these cases
- 4:01Speaker 1: and be able to have them and have all the
- 4:03Speaker 1: extra details drink that you guys want, and so we're
- 4:08Speaker 1: gonna kind of get back to that. We'll still have
- 4:09Speaker 1: a little bit of banter back and forth that we're
- 4:11Speaker 1: going to get back to the core of the crimes
- 4:14Speaker 1: during our weekly episodes is what the plan is. And
- 4:18Speaker 1: then on the Friday episodes on Patreon, we'll get into
- 4:21Speaker 1: more of the of all of our nonsense that we
- 4:25Speaker 1: have that we maybe get carried away with.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Sometimes somebody goes on too long about.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Okay whatever, Stu.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Okay, you think it's me.
- 4:36Speaker 1: No, you're always telling me to stop.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Wrap it up.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Yes, wrap it up anyway. So basically let me run
- 4:43Speaker 1: you down real quick and then we'll get into this
- 4:45Speaker 1: week's episode so we don't carry on like we have
- 4:48Speaker 1: been passed. So basically on Mondays you will have a
- 4:52Speaker 1: little les Mess, which is our regular episodes, but it's
- 4:55Speaker 1: like pared down to just the facts. It's just me
- 4:59Speaker 1: telling the story. I'll also post those on social media,
- 5:04Speaker 1: so we have those on Mondays Wednesdays. If you are
- 5:07Speaker 1: a Patreon on the Spike Tea level, you will get
- 5:10Speaker 1: those early and ad free. On Thursdays is where our
- 5:14Speaker 1: regular episode will come out that are just our core
- 5:19Speaker 1: of it, which is a true crime episode. And then
- 5:22Speaker 1: on Fridays we have Sitting, Sipping and Bullshitting, which was
- 5:25Speaker 1: formally Shoot the Pooh and so now that's just us
- 5:28Speaker 1: talking about our life updates. And then we will cover
- 5:30Speaker 1: a true crime documentary like last week we covered a
- 5:35Speaker 1: toxic love story on Netflix, so don't go watch that
- 5:39Speaker 1: and then listen to it because we definitely have spoilers
- 5:41Speaker 1: in there. So yeah, and then we have our weekly
- 5:44Speaker 1: poor every week which will be part of our Friday episode.
- 5:48Speaker 1: So that's where we pick a drink each week. We
- 5:50Speaker 1: make it in our Mason Jars. We share the recipe
- 5:52Speaker 1: with you guys, so you can drink drink, so you
- 5:56Speaker 1: can drink along with us. The whole point is that
- 5:58Speaker 1: we're we wanted to fill more like a community on
- 6:01Speaker 1: our Patreon. Now we have a group chat where you
- 6:04Speaker 1: can like directly talk to me and Stu and we
- 6:06Speaker 1: can respond to you right away, almost like a text
- 6:09Speaker 1: message kind of situation. So yeah, if you haven't ever
- 6:12Speaker 1: checked out our Patreon, we highly recommend go.
- 6:15Speaker 2: You forbid me, No, I didn't.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Forbid you, Stu. You can still respond you need to
- 6:21Speaker 1: run it by me first, but you can respond. Yeah.
- 6:25Speaker 1: So the point of it is it's a group chat
- 6:27Speaker 1: where it's more like a text message where you are
- 6:29Speaker 1: communicating with us. So that's one of the things that
- 6:31Speaker 1: you get with our patreon. And then obviously we'll still
- 6:36Speaker 1: be on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. I'm still sharing our
- 6:40Speaker 1: dinners each night. If you want to know about those,
- 6:43Speaker 1: we had leftovers. We had, Yeah, we had leftovers, so yeah,
- 6:49Speaker 1: so go check those out. And then obviously we really
- 6:52Speaker 1: appreciate if you guys rate, review and subscribe five stars only.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Of course we asked that some people get mad. We
- 6:59Speaker 1: asked that, Yeah, real man, what else am I supposed
- 7:02Speaker 1: to ask for? You want me to ask you to?
- 7:04Speaker 1: Please give us one story of you. Please tell me
- 7:07Speaker 1: how terrible I am.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Yes, please tell us how you think we will. Yes.
- 7:11Speaker 1: If you don't like us, just stop now and exit
- 7:14Speaker 1: the podcast.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Find all the platforms that we're on and crap on
- 7:18Speaker 2: us on every single platform.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Yes, So with that, you can find all those links
- 7:24Speaker 1: in our show notes. And we really appreciate everybody who
- 7:27Speaker 1: has been here with us a long time, all of
- 7:30Speaker 1: our patreons, and if you were a patron. Before this
- 7:33Speaker 1: these changes happen, you are grandfathered in. I just want
- 7:36Speaker 1: to say that, so the same level you were, you had,
- 7:39Speaker 1: you're still at that level, say, same benefits for the
- 7:43Speaker 1: same price. Now if you exit that tier and then
- 7:47Speaker 1: try to come back in, it ain't gonna be there.
- 7:49Speaker 1: I'm sorry, but yeah, it's I mean, but it's not.
- 7:53Speaker 1: It's not that much of a price change or anything
- 7:55Speaker 1: like that. But yeah, so that's the changes we have.
- 7:58Speaker 1: If you, if you probably we are looking at this
- 8:01Speaker 1: and notice the logo change and stuff. That's where all
- 8:03Speaker 1: this is coming from. It's kind of a revamp of
- 8:06Speaker 1: the podcast and we're trying to be more professional. If
- 8:10Speaker 1: you wills do yeah, okay, yeah, we're trying. Okay, well,
- 8:15Speaker 1: so one of us says with that, Stewart, what oh
- 8:19Speaker 1: my god. Anyway, we'll still have banter back and forth,
- 8:22Speaker 1: but we are going to try to stick to the
- 8:23Speaker 1: crimes during the regular weekly episodes, because that's where you
- 8:26Speaker 1: guys are here. You want to hear about the true crime,
- 8:28Speaker 1: you know, you want to hear our bullshit probably on
- 8:30Speaker 1: sit and sip in a bullshit and that's the point
- 8:32Speaker 1: of the name of it, all right, So with that, Stu,
- 8:35Speaker 1: We're gonna go ahead and get into our case out
- 8:38Speaker 1: of Texas. And this is a crazy one. I had
- 8:40Speaker 1: never heard of this until I started researching it. This
- 8:45Speaker 1: basic it's a serial killer that is on nobody knows.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I didn't know about him.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Yeah, So as part of our revamp, I guess we're
- 8:53Speaker 2: going to be doing unsolved crimes as well.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Yes, we'll do some unsolved crimes. Do I feel like
- 8:58Speaker 1: because we're a mystery we're murder mystery and mayhem, So
- 9:02Speaker 1: that's part of the mystery, Stu.
- 9:04Speaker 2: We don't do much mystery or mayhem, do we No, but.
- 9:06Speaker 1: We're gonna be doing it. That's the intent of the
- 9:09Speaker 1: podcast originally was we do true crime stuff, meaning we
- 9:14Speaker 1: do current murders that have been solved, but also like
- 9:17Speaker 1: southerns like mysteries like what is happening in the South?
- 9:21Speaker 1: What are these like the axe Man and stuff? We
- 9:23Speaker 1: did that one. Nobody ever solved that one. We don't
- 9:25Speaker 1: know who that did that. We've done unsolved crimes.
- 9:29Speaker 2: For we have so not often.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Okay, Stu, would you like to just cancel now? Would
- 9:35Speaker 1: you like to cancel this episode? He's apparently got a
- 9:40Speaker 1: problem with the unsolved mystery type.
- 9:43Speaker 2: I have a problem with my colleague.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Okay, well I've got a problem with my colleague as well.
- 9:48Speaker 1: I'm filing a complaint with HR all. Right, so let's
- 9:52Speaker 1: go ahead. Okay, can you just shut up again? We
- 9:56Speaker 1: can't get away from the core humans that we are. STU,
- 9:58Speaker 1: shut up. Let's get into this case out of Texas,
- 10:04Speaker 1: all right. So it's Texarcana nineteen forty six. To want
- 10:08Speaker 1: to shane the fear that settled over texts Arcana, we
- 10:11Speaker 1: have to start with what it was like before the
- 10:13Speaker 1: killer showed ups to Texas. Arcana is literally split by
- 10:17Speaker 1: the state line. One side in Texas, one started side
- 10:20Speaker 1: in Arkansas, as you can imagine because it's called Texas Arcana. Yeah. Now,
- 10:25Speaker 1: in early nineteen forty six, the war was over, the
- 10:29Speaker 1: World War Two. That was a big ones do.
- 10:32Speaker 2: That's what I say.
- 10:35Speaker 1: That No two eyes wwww oh okay, yeah, So things
- 10:41Speaker 1: are trying to get back to normal. So people are
- 10:43Speaker 1: trying to just do something fun. So they're they're getting
- 10:49Speaker 1: back their jobs. They're working in the rail yards, the mills.
- 10:52Speaker 1: But the soldiers are coming home. They're trying to do dances.
- 10:54Speaker 1: They're trying to go to church socials. There there's a
- 10:58Speaker 1: couples that are heading down Lover's Lane doing some neked
- 11:03Speaker 1: They're just trying to get a sense of normalcy after
- 11:05Speaker 1: this whole war just completely shattered the whole community. And
- 11:10Speaker 1: you know, because all the young people were going off,
- 11:12Speaker 1: the men were going off to war. It was unknown
- 11:15Speaker 1: what was going to happen in this country and stuff.
- 11:17Speaker 1: And so it's finally over and they can finally get
- 11:19Speaker 1: back to a place of normalcy.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Now at this time, tech Sarcana Carrot is town where
- 11:27Speaker 2: folks believe in minding their own damn business and living simple,
- 11:30Speaker 2: which I can appreciate.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Yes, we like to we live a little simple life ourselves.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Yes, you can lock your door at night, or you
- 11:38Speaker 2: cannot lock your door at night. You just don't go
- 11:40Speaker 2: looking for.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Trouble, and trouble won't find you.
- 11:43Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. And there was this assumption that
- 11:45Speaker 2: if you were a decent person, big terrible things wouldn't
- 11:49Speaker 2: come and find you.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Yes, And that's how I don't live my life. I
- 11:53Speaker 1: assume everything best.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Yes, you assume I'm trying to tell you.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Yes, I'm as we talk about in the Friday episode,
- 12:01Speaker 1: I would not give you full power of attorney to
- 12:04Speaker 1: sign for the real estate. I was like, I am
- 12:05Speaker 1: not the signing over all my rights. I've seen this
- 12:08Speaker 1: dateline episode before.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Then I give you four rights to buy this house.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Huh when you signed for this house?
- 12:13Speaker 1: I don't remember. I don't recall, but maybe I could
- 12:15Speaker 1: take you down right now if I still have that,
- 12:17Speaker 1: because apparently you have to in the power of return.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Yes you do so.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Over about ten weeks in that spring, that assumption shattered.
- 12:26Speaker 1: An unidentified attacker assaulted eight people and killed five, targeting
- 12:31Speaker 1: mostly young couples in park cars at night, so when
- 12:34Speaker 1: they were just trying to like enjoy their lives.
- 12:36Speaker 2: To get the second base phil Bobe or something, Oh Stuart,
- 12:39Speaker 2: what now?
- 12:41Speaker 1: The press gave him names the Phantom Killer, the Phantom Slayer,
- 12:44Speaker 1: the Moonlight Murderer, which personally, if I was going to
- 12:48Speaker 1: be a serial killer, I would pick the Moonlight Murderer.
- 12:51Speaker 2: I mean, I'd want to go with the Phantom Slayer.
- 12:52Speaker 2: I like that.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Oh you like that one because you like Slayer.
- 12:55Speaker 2: I do like Slay.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Now he stopped being just a criminal on paper and
- 12:58Speaker 1: became a sort of real boogieman, which his we'll talk
- 13:03Speaker 1: about later, but his legend continued to this day, to
- 13:06Speaker 1: this day of being the Boogeyman.
- 13:09Speaker 2: The first known attack happened on the night of February
- 13:12Speaker 2: twenty second, nineteen forty six, twenty five year old Jimmy
- 13:17Speaker 2: Hollis and his nineteen year old girlfriend.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Seems like a big age difference to me, Stuart, you think,
- 13:21Speaker 1: what maybe back then that didn't matter. I don't know.
- 13:24Speaker 2: It's only six years. They're both adults, I guess.
- 13:27Speaker 1: I guess. I mean, we're one to talk, but.
- 13:30Speaker 2: You're one to talk. You're one at I'm fine with it.
- 13:33Speaker 1: I know you're fine with it.
- 13:36Speaker 2: You're bringing up some nitpicky stuff now, though it seems
- 13:38Speaker 2: like okay anyway. Mary Jean Larry was the girlfriend. They
- 13:45Speaker 2: were parked on a secluded road just outside the Texarcana
- 13:48Speaker 2: city limits. It was late, it was quiet, and just
- 13:52Speaker 2: another lover's lame night for them, because evidently I'd like
- 13:55Speaker 2: to go out there and do a little necking.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Yes, Now, out of the dark, a man appeared at
- 14:00Speaker 1: the driver's side window with a flashlight and a gun.
- 14:04Speaker 1: According to both survivors, he wore a white cloth mask
- 14:07Speaker 1: like a pillowcase. With holes cut out for the eyes
- 14:10Speaker 1: and mouth, which is absolutely terrifying. Terrifying, Like that is
- 14:15Speaker 1: straight out of a nineteen seventies horror movie, like the.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Old guy from Batman the Sandman that had the bag
- 14:21Speaker 2: with the eyes.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it's just like it's if you want your
- 14:25Speaker 1: kids to scare people on Halloween, just take a pillowcase
- 14:28Speaker 1: and cut some eyes out. Maybe we should do that
- 14:30Speaker 1: with our kids. We could just be the We could
- 14:31Speaker 1: just really creep people out next.
- 14:33Speaker 2: This year, we'll just all go as pillow cast fans. Yes.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Now, he ordered Jimmy out of the car. Then he
- 14:39Speaker 1: forced Jimmy to remove his pants and proceeded to beat
- 14:42Speaker 1: him severely in the head with a blunt object, fracturing
- 14:45Speaker 1: a skull. So he's working on the premise of humiliating
- 14:50Speaker 1: him by having him take his pants off before assaulting him.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Like that's another level, Like it's not just beating him,
- 14:57Speaker 1: it's like, hey, take your clothes off and then I'm
- 14:59Speaker 1: going to attack to show you how much more dominant
- 15:02Speaker 1: I am than you.
- 15:03Speaker 2: This is scary. I mean making out in the car
- 15:06Speaker 2: when I was I know, we got pulled over by
- 15:08Speaker 2: the cops once. That was exciting.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Who nothing, Oh, stuy, it ain't me and you you
- 15:16Speaker 1: best check yourself before you wreck yourself. What it's so funny.
- 15:21Speaker 1: We've been together for how long? Sixteen years? We have
- 15:25Speaker 1: four children, and I will still get mad.
- 15:29Speaker 2: Yep, all right, what do you mean I was in
- 15:32Speaker 2: your first love?
- 15:35Speaker 1: Yes, that is true.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Getting back to our case, Mary Jean was chased into
- 15:43Speaker 2: a ditch and assaulted. Some accounts say he told her
- 15:46Speaker 2: to run and then he attacked her when she did run.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Yeah, it's almost like he's like toying with him, you know.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Yes, there's another version of the story where he ordered
- 15:56Speaker 2: her to get up and chased her down and he
- 16:00Speaker 2: either version, both of them were left gravely injured, but
- 16:02Speaker 2: both were still.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Alive, and when they recovered enough to talk, they gave
- 16:07Speaker 1: conflicting descriptions about the attacker's race and face, which isn't
- 16:11Speaker 1: surprising given that they'd been attacked in the dark with
- 16:14Speaker 1: a masked person. I mean, just scary, and we're dealing
- 16:19Speaker 1: with a level of trauma. Trauma that's just I mean,
- 16:22Speaker 1: they had gone through something. I mean, the one guy
- 16:24Speaker 1: had been asked room of his pants and then pastel,
- 16:28Speaker 1: and then the woman had the girl had been sexually assaulted.
- 16:32Speaker 1: So they agreed on a general height around six feet
- 16:35Speaker 1: and the mass beyond that there wasn't much for police
- 16:38Speaker 1: to hold on to. It just wasn't cohesive their descriptions
- 16:41Speaker 1: that they were giving.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Yeah, And at that point, investigators thought they were dealing
- 16:46Speaker 2: with a brutal robbery or an isolated assault. The town
- 16:49Speaker 2: didn't yet understand that this was going to be the
- 16:52Speaker 2: first chapter in a serial pattern. Kara.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Yeah. So about a month later everything escalated. On the
- 17:00Speaker 1: morning of March twenty fourth, nineteen forty six, a passing
- 17:03Speaker 1: motorist noticed a car parked on a remote dirt road
- 17:07Speaker 1: known locally as Lever's Lanes. Do I'm gonna take you
- 17:11Speaker 1: to Lover's Lane a little bit later. Yeah, you are
- 17:14Speaker 1: stop stop, this is inappropriate, all right? And it was
- 17:20Speaker 1: a nineteen forty one odesmobile inside where twenty nine year
- 17:24Speaker 1: old Richard Griffin and his seventeen year old girlfriend. I'm sorry,
- 17:27Speaker 1: but you have to have a problem with that age gap.
- 17:29Speaker 1: That's a bit that's a bit much. Twenty nine and seventeen.
- 17:32Speaker 2: What was she seventeen? About to turn eighteen the next day, Oh, Stuart.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Her name was Pollyanne, which was what.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Did she just turn seventeen the day before?
- 17:41Speaker 1: What ironic? Her name was Pollyanne, more so Pollyanna, you know. So, Yeah,
- 17:48Speaker 1: I feel like that age difference was a bit much.
- 17:50Speaker 1: I feel like it was more acceptable back then. I
- 17:53Speaker 1: really actually feel like they've gone in the other direction
- 17:55Speaker 1: as we've gone through time up until this point.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Both of them had been shot in the back of
- 18:02Speaker 2: the head. Richard was found on his knees between the
- 18:05Speaker 2: front seats, his hands on the seat and his head
- 18:08Speaker 2: resting on them as though he'd been made to kneel,
- 18:12Speaker 2: and before he was shot, Polly was laying face down
- 18:16Speaker 2: in the back seat.
- 18:17Speaker 1: Yeah, so this is really escalating from prior to both
- 18:20Speaker 1: people had survived and now both the person has killed
- 18:24Speaker 1: both of these people.
- 18:26Speaker 2: Now.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Investigators observed a blood trail outside the car and concluded
- 18:29Speaker 1: that the couple had likely been attacked and killed outside
- 18:32Speaker 1: the vehicle, then repositioned post mortem. So this is another level.
- 18:38Speaker 1: There was no evidence of robbery, valuables were still there.
- 18:41Speaker 1: It looked like the motive was purely violence, which is
- 18:44Speaker 1: super super scary.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Yeah, somebody just showing up just to commit Yeah, just to.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Commitment and then moving the bodies afterwards is disturbing exactly.
- 18:53Speaker 2: This was not a murder or a mugging that had
- 18:56Speaker 2: gone wrong. It was a premeditated stage murder. And because
- 19:00Speaker 2: there was still no clear suspect, panic began to spread
- 19:04Speaker 2: quietly and quickly, especially among the young people who'd been
- 19:08Speaker 2: doing the same thing that Griffin and Moore had been doing,
- 19:11Speaker 2: which is making out in park cars.
- 19:14Speaker 1: They'd be out there like, oh God, we're up next,
- 19:16Speaker 1: you know. On April thirteenth, nineteen forty six, seventeen year
- 19:20Speaker 1: old Paul Martin picked up fifteen year old Betty Joe
- 19:23Speaker 1: Booker after she'd finished playing saxophone with her band at
- 19:27Speaker 1: a local VFW dance. They left in Paul's car. It
- 19:31Speaker 1: was the last time anyone would see them alive.
- 19:36Speaker 2: The next morning, Paul's body was found on the side
- 19:38Speaker 2: of the road. He had been shot four times, once
- 19:41Speaker 2: in the face, once in the neck, once in the hand,
- 19:45Speaker 2: and once in the shoulder. Hours later, searchers found Betty
- 19:48Speaker 2: Joe's body about two miles away near a small wooded area,
- 19:53Speaker 2: and she had been shot twice.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Yeah, so that was a very violent death for Paul
- 19:59Speaker 1: to be s that many times indifferent area.
- 20:02Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like he was trying to get away, put
- 20:05Speaker 2: his hand up.
- 20:06Speaker 1: To block himself. Yeah, don't let me forget. I want
- 20:08Speaker 1: to come back to this because there is a scene
- 20:11Speaker 1: in the movie that they make about this, that they
- 20:14Speaker 1: talk about Betty Joe's murder and it was extremely disturbing,
- 20:21Speaker 1: wasn't Now It was at the scene investigators found a
- 20:25Speaker 1: thirty two caliber caliber wow caliber shell casings. Now, when
- 20:33Speaker 1: they compare those to the casings that they found at
- 20:35Speaker 1: the Griffin and More murders, they matched same weapon, a
- 20:40Speaker 1: thirty two caliber cult automatic pistol. That's when law enforcement
- 20:44Speaker 1: realized that they weren't just dealing with separate random tragedies.
- 20:48Speaker 1: They were dealing with a actual serial killer in their
- 20:52Speaker 1: midst which is just insane to think about in Texarcana
- 20:55Speaker 1: in nineteen forty six. However, just let me just say,
- 20:59Speaker 1: we're calling it a serial killer now, but back then
- 21:01Speaker 1: they did not. That term was not around what the seventies, Yeah,
- 21:07Speaker 1: I think the seventies or eighties that they coined that
- 21:10Speaker 1: term for somebody who killed more than three people. So, yeah,
- 21:14Speaker 1: this was just unknown at that time to have to
- 21:17Speaker 1: deal with something like this.
- 21:19Speaker 2: The fact that Betty Joe had just come from a
- 21:21Speaker 2: band gig and Paul was picking her up like any
- 21:24Speaker 2: teenage boy picking up his friend after a show. Made
- 21:28Speaker 2: this feel particularly cruel.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Yeah. They were doing like wholesome teen activities right back then,
- 21:34Speaker 1: you know, I mean, yes, they were going to.
- 21:36Speaker 2: Lover's lane, but you know, doing some necking.
- 21:38Speaker 1: They were just doing some necking.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Yeah. These weren't people living on the margins, on the
- 21:44Speaker 2: fringe of society. These were kids doing normal everyday, weekend things.
- 21:49Speaker 2: And suddenly an unseen person started hunting these kids doing
- 21:53Speaker 2: these normal things and killing them.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Yeah, taking them out in like a very cruel manner.
- 22:01Speaker 1: So once the connection between the murders was clear, panic
- 22:04Speaker 1: fully overtook Texarcana, which I can imagine I would be
- 22:08Speaker 1: the same way. I mean, this is relatively small town.
- 22:10Speaker 1: This is back in nineteen forty six, So yes, there's
- 22:12Speaker 1: no social media to spread the word. But let me
- 22:15Speaker 1: tell you what. Everybody in that town knew what was
- 22:17Speaker 1: going on. Hardware stores sold out of dead bolts, window locks,
- 22:22Speaker 1: and ammunition. People who had never owned guns went out
- 22:25Speaker 1: and bought them. Now, movie theaters and cafes emptied out
- 22:28Speaker 1: at night. People slept in groups or moved in with
- 22:31Speaker 1: relatives that they wouldn't be alone. I mean, it was
- 22:33Speaker 1: full on panic, going from oh well just lock our
- 22:37Speaker 1: doors or not, it doesn't matter. Everything safe in this
- 22:39Speaker 1: town to like full on we're dead bolding everything, we're
- 22:43Speaker 1: moving in. Groups were shutting down. The town were done.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Some folks started patrolling their own neighborhoods a neighborhood watch
- 22:51Speaker 2: if you if you will, Oh.
- 22:52Speaker 1: I do love a neighborhood watch, stew I've always wanted
- 22:55Speaker 1: to join, when you know.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Just stay yeah at our next house here.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Strolling around found it. Oh yeah, we can't watch this neighborhood.
- 23:02Speaker 1: This shit we live. It's nothing but debauchery going on
- 23:07Speaker 1: out there right now.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Somebody was just booming. I mean it's.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Almost yeah, it's like super late at night and someone
- 23:13Speaker 1: was just had our windows shaken with their car stereo. Yeah, midnight,
- 23:18Speaker 1: come on, it's this, Come on, get it together, folks.
- 23:21Speaker 2: Other people drove around at night looking for suspicious cars.
- 23:24Speaker 2: The atmosphere was tense, so tense that you had to
- 23:28Speaker 2: wonder if the fear itself might eventually cause some kind
- 23:31Speaker 2: of vigil anti incident or an actullent accidental.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Shooting people panicking and assuming that someone's coming to get
- 23:40Speaker 1: them and then overreacting and like shooting somebody because they're like, hey.
- 23:45Speaker 2: Because Stu went out to get some some beer and
- 23:48Speaker 2: cigarettes at ten o'clock.
- 23:50Speaker 1: At night and left his family, left his family, yes,
- 23:54Speaker 1: and then overreacting me like I'm going to shoot him
- 23:56Speaker 1: because I feel like he's a suspicious.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Party, suspicious out here at night.
- 24:00Speaker 1: So the Texas Rangers, the classic are the famous Texas Rangers.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Is that is he died, didn't he?
- 24:09Speaker 2: Yes? Or did he rip walker? Texas Ranger?
- 24:16Speaker 1: Okay? So they were called in to assist, along with
- 24:18Speaker 1: local police on both sides of the state line and
- 24:20Speaker 1: federal investigators. They set up to decoy operations along country roads,
- 24:25Speaker 1: sometimes dressing melf This is my favorite part, sometimes dressing
- 24:29Speaker 1: mail officers as women. And can you imagine back in
- 24:33Speaker 1: nineteen the nineteen forties, I mean, like today it would
- 24:36Speaker 1: be you know, it would be probably lots of them
- 24:41Speaker 1: would be okay, we're doing this. But back then I'm
- 24:43Speaker 1: assuming it was probably like a big pull, like hey,
- 24:47Speaker 1: the chief was like, hey, I'm gonna need you on
- 24:50Speaker 1: a put on a wig and some and a dress yes,
- 24:56Speaker 1: and the officer is probably like, oh my god. So yeah,
- 24:58Speaker 1: so they dressed male officers as women and then put
- 25:02Speaker 1: them with another male officer dressed in like plain clothes
- 25:06Speaker 1: to try to like replicate couples. Yeah. The one guy
- 25:11Speaker 1: is probably like, I've been waiting for this. I can
- 25:16Speaker 1: make out with Bill. It's been unacceptable in this current climate. Yeah.
- 25:22Speaker 1: So they actually staged couples and they were both male officers,
- 25:26Speaker 1: and one was dressed as a female and one was
- 25:28Speaker 1: dressed as a male to try to entice the phantom
- 25:32Speaker 1: into attacking them just as like they were another couple,
- 25:36Speaker 1: to try to figure out who this person was.
- 25:38Speaker 2: But the phantom Slayer shifted tactics instead of.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Sticking to you're official pantom slay.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Yeah, on and on South of Heaven. Random blood from
- 25:47Speaker 2: a lacerated sky.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Oh my god, that's so dark. It's wrong with you.
- 25:53Speaker 2: They're just classes.
- 25:56Speaker 1: So you used to pay Okay, let me do a
- 25:57Speaker 1: little flashback. Still used to do this to me late
- 26:01Speaker 1: at night, after maybe a couple of drinks. Used to
- 26:07Speaker 1: put no, he used to put on his his iPhone
- 26:11Speaker 1: or whatever a Slayer song, and I was like, that's
- 26:13Speaker 1: like the devil. I mean, I grew up in a
- 26:15Speaker 1: very religious household. We weren't even allowed to play in
- 26:18Speaker 1: sync for God's sake. I mean, come on, Slayers sounded like.
- 26:22Speaker 2: You know what infectious grooves or suicide, don't.
- 26:24Speaker 1: I don't know, Stuart, it was define you're playing devil
- 26:27Speaker 1: music for me. And I'll stand. I'll stand. I'll stand
- 26:30Speaker 1: up on that against that that you were playing devil
- 26:33Speaker 1: music to me, and that's.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Where and I still play it whenever.
- 26:37Speaker 1: When I haven't heard it. I know you're trying to
- 26:41Speaker 1: kids rock out on the one. I know you're trying
- 26:43Speaker 1: to get that two year old, that little poot, you're
- 26:45Speaker 1: trying to get her. She's a little bit hardcore. I
- 26:48Speaker 1: need to I need to watch that one.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Yep, yep, yep, yep. Yes, So the Phantom Slayer did
- 26:55Speaker 2: shift tactics. Instead of sticking to park cars on Lever's lanes,
- 27:00Speaker 2: he took aim at farmhouses instead.
- 27:04Speaker 1: On the night of May third, nineteen forty six, thirty
- 27:07Speaker 1: seven year old Virgil Starks was sitting in his favorite
- 27:10Speaker 1: chair in his home ten miles outside of Texarcanis do
- 27:13Speaker 1: his favorite chair this is the real crime.
- 27:16Speaker 2: I have a favorite chair, I know.
- 27:18Speaker 1: But I'm saying, like, you don't do something to somebody
- 27:20Speaker 1: in their favorite chair. Okay, there's a privacy to that, Okay. Now,
- 27:26Speaker 1: he was listening to the radio and reading the newspaper.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Behind him was a window.
- 27:31Speaker 2: According to accounts of the incident, two shots rang out
- 27:36Speaker 2: from outside. The bullets traveled through the glass and into
- 27:39Speaker 2: the back of Virgil's head. He died almost instantly, slumping
- 27:44Speaker 2: forward out of the chair and onto the floor. His
- 27:47Speaker 2: favorite chair, his favorite chair.
- 27:48Speaker 1: I mean, at least, I'm not trying to be dark,
- 27:50Speaker 1: but at least, I mean I want to be comfortable
- 27:53Speaker 1: before ago, you know, so at least he was in
- 27:55Speaker 1: his favorite chair. Now, his wife, thirty six year old Katie, starved.
- 28:00Speaker 1: So I find that funny. It's like Katie, I don't
- 28:03Speaker 1: feel like that's like a normal name.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Katie.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Yeah, no, it's a normal name now. But I mean,
- 28:08Speaker 1: I'm just saying, like, back then, Katie.
- 28:10Speaker 2: You don't think Katie was a popular nineteen forty name.
- 28:13Speaker 1: No heard the glass shatter.
- 28:16Speaker 2: She would have been born in the twenties, I'm guessing, yeah,
- 28:18Speaker 2: so she was ahead of her time for the teens.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Her parents were head at the time. Now she heard
- 28:24Speaker 1: the glass shatter. She came into the room, saw Virgil
- 28:27Speaker 1: and ran toward the telephone to call for help. As
- 28:30Speaker 1: she did, the killer fired again through the same window,
- 28:33Speaker 1: hitting her twice in the face. Katie collapsed but wasn't
- 28:37Speaker 1: killed outright, so.
- 28:38Speaker 2: She is surviving, mortally wounded.
- 28:41Speaker 1: But not not thriving. Stew not thriving.
- 28:44Speaker 2: The attacker then moved to the back porch.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Which is where we will be going after this episode, Stu,
- 28:50Speaker 1: That's where we do sitting, sipping and bullshitting by the porch. Guys,
- 28:54Speaker 1: just embrace my porch analogy.
- 28:56Speaker 2: I think it's nerdy.
- 28:58Speaker 1: I need you to embrace that. We are on a porch,
- 29:01Speaker 1: we are on rocking chairs, and we were talking true crime.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Because I love it so much, I need you to
- 29:07Speaker 1: just accept it.
- 29:08Speaker 2: With your digital marshmallow.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Your digital marshmallows, your digital porch, your digital chair, rocking chair.
- 29:17Speaker 1: If I could, if we could record this in a
- 29:20Speaker 1: rocking chair on a porch, I would be ten out
- 29:23Speaker 1: of ten. I would be so happy with that. But
- 29:26Speaker 1: I don't know. The acoustics aren't right, you know, So
- 29:30Speaker 1: instand we're sitting in a closet, but metaphorically I am
- 29:34Speaker 1: on a porch talking with stew We're chatting about this
- 29:37Speaker 1: case with all of you, all.
- 29:40Speaker 2: Getting back to our story.
- 29:41Speaker 1: Yes, we will not get off. We will not get sidetracked.
- 29:44Speaker 2: The killer moved to the back porch, trying to get inside,
- 29:49Speaker 2: ripping at the screen door, trying to enter the home.
- 29:52Speaker 1: That's extremely terrifying for Katie. Can you imagine being shot
- 29:57Speaker 1: and then this psychopath is trying to rip through the
- 30:00Speaker 1: screen door to get in there. To you, I mean,
- 30:02Speaker 1: it's well r shot, I know, but I'm saying Katie's
- 30:07Speaker 1: still alive and she's watching this person try to break
- 30:10Speaker 1: in to.
- 30:11Speaker 2: Get she heard she heard a glass break, she walked out,
- 30:13Speaker 2: saw her husband. No, she's been shot, face down, murdered,
- 30:17Speaker 2: and she's like, oh my god, I need help. Mince
- 30:19Speaker 2: she gets shot.
- 30:19Speaker 1: I know that. I'm saying, this is guy's trying to
- 30:21Speaker 1: break in the hell. Yes, I'm saying it's completely terrifying
- 30:24Speaker 1: for her.
- 30:25Speaker 2: You love Virgil the whole Virgil.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Instead, we have to move on, Wow, rip Virgil. Okay,
- 30:33Speaker 1: we have to move on. The fact is that Katie
- 30:36Speaker 1: is living this nightmare, this true life horror movie of
- 30:40Speaker 1: someone trying to break in while she's injured. I mean,
- 30:43Speaker 1: I can't even imagine.
- 30:44Speaker 2: Yes, And while she's bleeding heavily, Katie somehow managed to
- 30:48Speaker 2: get up, run out the back, and cross the highway
- 30:51Speaker 2: barefoot to a neighbor's house. They got her to a
- 30:54Speaker 2: hospital and she survived. She was not mortally wounded.
- 30:59Speaker 1: Thank god, like you said, thank God, she's got some
- 31:03Speaker 1: she needs some therapy, but she's she's gonna make it now.
- 31:07Speaker 1: Ballistics later showed that the weapon used in the Stark's
- 31:10Speaker 1: attack was a twenty two rifle, different from the thirty
- 31:13Speaker 1: two cold automatic pistol used in the previous murders. Investigators
- 31:18Speaker 1: still believed, based on timing and behavior, that this was
- 31:22Speaker 1: likely the same killer changing his method, but the new
- 31:25Speaker 1: weapon and the home setting definitely complicated that profile that
- 31:29Speaker 1: they were trying to build, because I mean, most Sarah
- 31:33Speaker 1: killers don't really change their mo unless they're building up
- 31:36Speaker 1: to how they really want to do it. Like you
- 31:39Speaker 1: might see that early on killings are a certain way,
- 31:42Speaker 1: but once they establish what gets them off, you know,
- 31:47Speaker 1: they in metaphorically off, they stick to that pattern. So
- 31:52Speaker 1: this is a completely different way to It's almost like
- 31:55Speaker 1: the person who wants to kill is just wants to
- 31:57Speaker 1: kill like they don't care how it happens.
- 31:59Speaker 2: Yeah, what a weapon is?
- 32:01Speaker 1: What the setting?
- 32:02Speaker 2: He went from up close and personal sexual assault to
- 32:06Speaker 2: basically being a sniper.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Yeah, they're telling someone to take their pants off, what
- 32:09Speaker 1: he beats them and stuff like that. I mean it's
- 32:11Speaker 1: an escalation for sure. Maybe this is how he really
- 32:14Speaker 1: wants to do. This is to kill in no matter
- 32:19Speaker 1: what means it takes, just to murder people and terrify them.
- 32:24Speaker 2: Yeah. So now you've got a massed attacker beating and
- 32:27Speaker 2: assaulting a couple in a car, a killer shooting couples
- 32:30Speaker 2: on lover's lane, and a shooter firing into a farmhouse window.
- 32:34Speaker 2: So you have this broad area of Texarcana the same
- 32:38Speaker 2: season of the time of the year, possibly the same man.
- 32:42Speaker 2: And the more the pattern shifted, the harder it is
- 32:45Speaker 2: to predict or set a trap for this guy.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Yeah, to kind of predict what he's going to do next.
- 32:52Speaker 1: So authorities they interviewed hundreds of people, close to four
- 32:56Speaker 1: hundred by some accounts. I mean they're just they're pulling
- 32:59Speaker 1: at every strokes. Yeah, they're like, we got to figure
- 33:02Speaker 1: this out. They chased leads that went nowhere, questioned drifters,
- 33:06Speaker 1: because you know, we always got some drifters in Texas
- 33:10Speaker 1: that went yep, and they looked into jealous ex husbands,
- 33:15Speaker 1: ex boyfriends. Tried to build a profile from incomplete survivor memories,
- 33:20Speaker 1: whatever they could do, from what they could they could cobble,
- 33:24Speaker 1: from what they got from everybody who had had any
- 33:27Speaker 1: interaction with this person, any relationships that the victims had,
- 33:33Speaker 1: what they could cobble together to find out who could
- 33:36Speaker 1: possibly be doing this, because again, this is the nineteen forties.
- 33:40Speaker 1: This isn't you can't just like I mean, I mean,
- 33:43Speaker 1: I know they had cars back then, but it wasn't
- 33:45Speaker 1: just as easy as now you could like do something
- 33:47Speaker 1: in one town.
- 33:48Speaker 2: And then they had cars for like.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Years, I know that, but it wasn't as easy to
- 33:53Speaker 1: like hop in a car and drive five hundred miles
- 33:56Speaker 1: in a day, you know, like it is now. I
- 33:58Speaker 1: mean they're trying. They're like, someone has to know somebody
- 34:02Speaker 1: that's done something, and they're still probably in this town,
- 34:05Speaker 1: this small little town in Texas.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Well. Funny you should mention that Kara. One name that
- 34:10Speaker 2: eventually rose to the top was a fellow by the
- 34:13Speaker 2: name of Julie Sweeney, a twenty nine year old career
- 34:16Speaker 2: criminal mostly known for auto theft and forgery. He'd been
- 34:21Speaker 2: in and out of trouble for years and was considered
- 34:23Speaker 2: dangerous but not necessarily a murder until his wife spelled
- 34:29Speaker 2: the beans Kara that bitch right now.
- 34:34Speaker 1: His wife, Peggy was picked up on a separate charge,
- 34:37Speaker 1: so she wouldn't really live in the high and mighty
- 34:40Speaker 1: life herself now. During her questioning, she started talking about
- 34:43Speaker 1: the moonlight murders or a STU would call the Phantom Slayer, yes,
- 34:47Speaker 1: and with some sort of music in the background, and
- 34:51Speaker 1: implied that her husband was responsible. In some accounts, she
- 34:54Speaker 1: explicitly explicitly said he was the phantom killer and that
- 35:00Speaker 1: she had been in the car during at least one
- 35:02Speaker 1: of the attacks.
- 35:03Speaker 2: She provided details drink that investigators found compelling. She allegedly
- 35:10Speaker 2: directed police to areas connected to the Booker and Martin case,
- 35:14Speaker 2: including the general area where Betty Joe's saxophone was eventually discovered.
- 35:19Speaker 2: That kind of specific information made the detectives take note
- 35:24Speaker 2: take her seriously, at least at first they did.
- 35:27Speaker 1: Yes, but again, she was picked up on charges, so
- 35:29Speaker 1: she might be not be the best reliable witness.
- 35:34Speaker 2: To all, and she might not like her husband anyway.
- 35:37Speaker 1: This is true, Okay, it might be ups and downs
- 35:40Speaker 1: in that relationship.
- 35:41Speaker 2: So from personal experience, I know this kind happened, but
- 35:44Speaker 2: I know you're.
- 35:46Speaker 1: Just okay now. Peggy's story shifted over time. Sometimes she
- 35:51Speaker 1: seemed to recant, sometimes she modified details. I'm guessing how
- 35:54Speaker 1: much she loved and hated her husband on that day.
- 35:59Speaker 1: Her reliable he was a major problem. On top of that,
- 36:02Speaker 1: under Texas law at the time, a wife couldn't be
- 36:05Speaker 1: forced to testify against her husband.
- 36:07Speaker 2: I don't think you can be forced anywhere.
- 36:09Speaker 1: I don't think you can't either. I think what is
- 36:11Speaker 1: that called there's some sort of thing where like husband
- 36:13Speaker 1: and wife don't have to testify against each other, can't
- 36:17Speaker 1: be compelled to get if they want to though, Yes,
- 36:21Speaker 1: so yes, where was I still?
- 36:24Speaker 2: Without her testimony in court?
- 36:26Speaker 1: Without her testimony in court, the state had no direct
- 36:29Speaker 1: witness to tie Swiney to the murder. So this is
- 36:33Speaker 1: a major issue for them. I mean, but basically all
- 36:36Speaker 1: they had was like possibly a bitter wife that maybe
- 36:40Speaker 1: hates and loves her husband. Seems to go back and
- 36:42Speaker 1: forth saying yeah he did it, and I was there
- 36:44Speaker 1: and it's like, well, what are your actual evidence that
- 36:47Speaker 1: you are, like, what's your what are you backing this
- 36:49Speaker 1: story up with?
- 36:50Speaker 2: You know, they did have his criminal record and his
- 36:53Speaker 2: behavioral record. Sweeney was eventually convicted as an habitual offender
- 36:59Speaker 2: and given a life sentence for auto theft.
- 37:03Speaker 1: Kara, Listen, they would give you life for anything back then.
- 37:07Speaker 1: I feel like, nowadays, you murdered seven people, sure we'll
- 37:10Speaker 1: let you out. Seems like in what off situation.
- 37:15Speaker 2: You can go on probate, you can go out. That's fine.
- 37:19Speaker 1: Good behavior will give you bail. Now. Back then, you
- 37:25Speaker 1: stole a couple of cars, you were like, yeah, you're
- 37:27Speaker 1: you're gonna You're lucky. You're not getting the death penalty. Okay,
- 37:31Speaker 1: I don't know the death penalty.
- 37:33Speaker 2: I don't know. But all these id people that keep
- 37:36Speaker 2: trying to do phishing emails to.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Get the Yes, they should anybody who's trying. I really
- 37:41Speaker 1: think there's a special place in hell for people that
- 37:44Speaker 1: take especially senior citizens, take advantage of them and take
- 37:48Speaker 1: their entire life savings like they should. Yes, they should
- 37:53Speaker 1: be put to death, for sure. I'll support that right there.
- 37:58Speaker 1: That's absolutely horrible.
- 38:00Speaker 2: Anybody that plays Taylor Swift music after stop it.
- 38:06Speaker 1: We know she didn't do the best at the wedding.
- 38:09Speaker 1: She could have done better at the like executing her
- 38:14Speaker 1: wedding or whatever. But yes, that was so tacky inviting everybody. Okay,
- 38:20Speaker 1: I'm not going to get into it. But she still
- 38:23Speaker 1: makes great music. And if she ever goes back on concert,
- 38:26Speaker 1: we're going to see her. We'll be in the town.
- 38:29Speaker 1: We'll be in Houston area where she'll definitely.
- 38:32Speaker 2: Be Well, you go, I'll be at home with the kids.
- 38:34Speaker 1: That's fine, I'll bring my brother. I'll have a great time.
- 38:38Speaker 1: Oh you know who's gone on tour is Garth Brooks Again.
- 38:43Speaker 1: We should go. That was fun. No, get back. This
- 38:48Speaker 1: is the this is what we're trying to avoid to
- 38:51Speaker 1: really in. Okay, this is a sitting, sipping and bullshitting
- 38:55Speaker 1: type of conversation.
- 38:56Speaker 2: It is it is. Of course, we've been going on
- 38:59Speaker 2: so long time, ain't that anyway? After mister Swinning was
- 39:04Speaker 2: locked up the Moonlight Murder stopped Kara. That circumstantial timing
- 39:10Speaker 2: has led many to believe that he was the phantom
- 39:15Speaker 2: slayer Angel of Death Monarch through the Kingdom of Oh
- 39:18Speaker 2: Dead Lord from the album rand In blood, even though
- 39:22Speaker 2: he was never formally charged with homicide.
- 39:26Speaker 1: Yes, and there was no physical evidence, no fingerprints, no
- 39:29Speaker 1: murder weapon linked to him, no definitive forensic tie, just
- 39:33Speaker 1: a pattern of wife's shifting story saying, hey, I hate him,
- 39:39Speaker 1: I love him. He did it, he didn't do it.
- 39:40Speaker 1: I'm not going to testify against him, but yes he's
- 39:43Speaker 1: the person.
- 39:44Speaker 2: But I'll tell you right now, hey done it. Yep.
- 39:46Speaker 1: A known criminal and a killers who spree ceased when
- 39:50Speaker 1: that criminal went away is all they literally, all they
- 39:54Speaker 1: have is just like, okay, the murder stopped when he
- 39:56Speaker 1: went away, right And you know that ain't enough to
- 40:00Speaker 1: say whether or not he actually did. It's a big
- 40:03Speaker 1: jump from stealing cars to killing people. I mean that's
- 40:07Speaker 1: a major just for.
- 40:08Speaker 2: The fun and the violence. Yeah, yes. So. Over the decades,
- 40:12Speaker 2: other theories have popped up. Some people think that the
- 40:16Speaker 2: phantom slayer might have been a local man who was
- 40:19Speaker 2: never on law enforcements radar, someone who blended back into
- 40:23Speaker 2: the town once the heat got too high, and oh
- 40:25Speaker 2: Swinning went to jail. Others have suggested he could have
- 40:30Speaker 2: died in an accident or from an illness not long
- 40:33Speaker 2: after the last attack.
- 40:35Speaker 1: I mean, that's always a probability, but probably or just
- 40:39Speaker 1: moved on to a different town. We don't know, Stu.
- 40:43Speaker 1: There's also a theory that the phantom might have been
- 40:45Speaker 1: a soldier or veteran with weapons training who passed through Texarcana,
- 40:51Speaker 1: committed his crimes, and then, like you know, just meandered
- 40:54Speaker 1: on was stationed someplace else. So the end of World
- 40:58Speaker 1: War Two created a huge flow of people, some carrying
- 41:02Speaker 1: trauma obviously, I mean I can't even imagine what they
- 41:07Speaker 1: went through in World War Two, Some carrying skills that
- 41:11Speaker 1: could make them more dangerous if something broke inside them,
- 41:13Speaker 1: if they're having mental health issues, which we're better at
- 41:17Speaker 1: identifying now. We know that people have gone to war
- 41:20Speaker 1: recently are going to be suffering, possibly suffering some those
- 41:24Speaker 1: types of things, and so we need to have support
- 41:26Speaker 1: for them. But back then that wasn't like a thing
- 41:28Speaker 1: at all. I mean they were they were like, fucket
- 41:33Speaker 1: the fuck up, soldier, Okay, you need to get it together.
- 41:35Speaker 1: But really, those people, I can't even imagine what they saw,
- 41:39Speaker 1: like storming the beaches of Normandy or anything like that,
- 41:43Speaker 1: or going into the concentration camps and seeing what happened
- 41:47Speaker 1: to like children and and women and all those people.
- 41:50Speaker 1: I mean, I can't even imagine. So yeah, so they're
- 41:53Speaker 1: they're concerned that maybe it was just somebody who just
- 41:55Speaker 1: kind of broke and snapped at that time and was
- 41:59Speaker 1: just passed through the town and had gone on to
- 42:02Speaker 1: someplace else.
- 42:04Speaker 2: It could be Caro. But we don't have any proof
- 42:07Speaker 2: for any of these theories, right to have our patterns
- 42:11Speaker 2: and speculation, which Kara is given. The only solid things
- 42:15Speaker 2: are the crimes, the survivor testimony, and the fact that
- 42:19Speaker 2: after a concentrated season of violence, the killing stopped as
- 42:23Speaker 2: abruptly as they began.
- 42:25Speaker 1: At the same time that the Swinny fellow went to jail.
- 42:29Speaker 1: I think it's so I still want to like, I
- 42:32Speaker 1: just think it's so disturbing. The white mask, it just
- 42:36Speaker 1: seems so Halloween, so corror film, just so scary. So
- 42:42Speaker 1: like a for a town like Texar, Canada. That means
- 42:45Speaker 1: living with the knowledge that someone did these things, and
- 42:50Speaker 1: that someone never faced a courtroom, never was there was
- 42:53Speaker 1: nover justice served, nothing. They can't they don't have any
- 42:57Speaker 1: solid answers. They just have theories in their head. As
- 43:00Speaker 1: possibly was the Swinny guys, possibly with somebody who moved
- 43:03Speaker 1: on to another place. There's no satisfying answer, no official like,
- 43:07Speaker 1: hey we got them, is just lingers on within the town?
- 43:11Speaker 2: Yeah, because even they're in the sexual assault stuff, they're
- 43:13Speaker 2: not gonna be like, hey, we're gonna swam this girl.
- 43:16Speaker 1: No, they didn't have any of that. Yeah, so we
- 43:19Speaker 1: just they didn't even have the inkling that that was
- 43:22Speaker 1: a possibility. You know, Like a lot of times we
- 43:24Speaker 1: hear about crimes in the nineties, specifically like hey we
- 43:27Speaker 1: heard this technology everything. Yeah, we heard this technology was
- 43:31Speaker 1: on was coming, but we didn't have it at the
- 43:34Speaker 1: moment when we knew to like collect the evidence. Back then,
- 43:37Speaker 1: there was not even like, oh, what are we going
- 43:39Speaker 1: to do with any of this, you know, what with
- 43:41Speaker 1: the pop can with some yeah, or what are we
- 43:43Speaker 1: going to do with any swabs from a sexual assault.
- 43:47Speaker 2: Ing swab a sexual assault? Yeah?
- 43:50Speaker 1: Like what is that? Sounds weird and invasive? Yes, So today,
- 43:56Speaker 1: nearly eighty years later, the phantom killer or slayer as
- 43:59Speaker 1: to to go on, remains unidentified. He attack, killed, and vanished.
- 44:04Speaker 1: The town has changed in a thousand ways, but the
- 44:07Speaker 1: legend remains. We've been through texta kind of have we
- 44:10Speaker 1: I think, so we passed through I've.
- 44:12Speaker 2: Been through there. I don't know I've been through there
- 44:14Speaker 2: with you. We haven't been through there.
- 44:17Speaker 1: Went there together? I think, so, yeah we did.
- 44:20Speaker 2: We were going to a thing in Oklahoma.
- 44:23Speaker 1: A funeral, stew if you want to be pressing it
- 44:28Speaker 1: is my mother's funeral. If we want to get into it,
- 44:31Speaker 1: would you like me to break down? No, we're not
- 44:34Speaker 1: going to do that right now anyway. So everything's like
- 44:38Speaker 1: I said, the legend remains a mask, man in the dark,
- 44:41Speaker 1: a gun, and a spring when safety felt like a
- 44:45Speaker 1: lie in that town because they originally felt very secure,
- 44:50Speaker 1: you know, not locking their doors just I mean it's
- 44:53Speaker 1: a small town. I mean back in the forties, I swear.
- 44:57Speaker 1: I mean. What's crazy is we're about in a couple
- 44:59Speaker 1: of years, in like a decade and a half. We're
- 45:02Speaker 1: not the forties, are not going to be the nineteen forties,
- 45:04Speaker 1: are going to be the twenty forties, which is crazy
- 45:07Speaker 1: to me. I can't believe it's been.
- 45:09Speaker 2: That we're going to live to the twenty forties.
- 45:11Speaker 1: Well, I will know.
- 45:12Speaker 2: We're talking about the Roaring twenties right now. Oh my god,
- 45:17Speaker 2: there was flapper girls in the rock.
- 45:18Speaker 1: Wow, that's crazy. They were much better twenties than we are.
- 45:24Speaker 2: Yes, they had much better clothes.
- 45:26Speaker 1: Oh yeah, they had much better clothes, better, much better fives,
- 45:29Speaker 1: much better. I mean, nobody drinks these days, all the
- 45:32Speaker 1: gen zs they say it's like down, like boo.
- 45:35Speaker 2: Wow, you were Definitely we're tracking up for them.
- 45:37Speaker 1: Yeah, we're trying to make it. We're trying to bring
- 45:39Speaker 1: it back with our weekly poor or whatever that we'll
- 45:41Speaker 1: talk about in our sitting sipping and bullshitting. We have
- 45:46Speaker 1: a recipe.
- 45:47Speaker 2: Everybody we can get there tonight.
- 45:48Speaker 1: Yes we can. We're we're gonna make it. Yeah. So
- 45:54Speaker 1: and if the name sounds so, let's talk about what
- 45:57Speaker 1: I wanted to talk about earlier, about the the white
- 46:00Speaker 1: mask and all the creepy stuff. So if the name
- 46:03Speaker 1: sounds familiar about this Phantom Killer, it's because there is
- 46:07Speaker 1: a horror movie that was a filmed in nineteen seventy six.
- 46:12Speaker 1: So this is pre Halloween, which is the I feel like, well,
- 46:17Speaker 1: I feel like Halloween is like the quintessential Halloween times
- 46:21Speaker 1: scary movie, the one you watch, we always watch it.
- 46:24Speaker 1: I've never seen this movie, so we're definitely adding it
- 46:27Speaker 1: to the lineup. When we watch our Halloween when we
- 46:30Speaker 1: have our thirty one days of Halloween's do next Friday?
- 46:34Speaker 1: We're celebrating you know whose birthday?
- 46:37Speaker 2: Let's do Slaers.
- 46:38Speaker 1: No, Harry Potter.
- 46:40Speaker 2: Who's that Harry Potters.
- 46:44Speaker 1: You've been to several locations that I've talked to him. Anyway,
- 46:49Speaker 1: So in nineteen seventy six, a film called The Town
- 46:51Speaker 1: That Dreaded Sundown took this story and turned into a
- 46:54Speaker 1: slasher style movie, complete with the hooded killer stalking couples
- 46:59Speaker 1: and text our care in it. It was directed by
- 47:01Speaker 1: Charles B. Pearce and was based very loosely on the
- 47:04Speaker 1: real incident, so it's a more of a spooky riff
- 47:07Speaker 1: on the case than a documentary retelling. However, it's very
- 47:12Speaker 1: close to what happened. And that's the thing with Yes.
- 47:15Speaker 1: And in that movie, Betty Joe's murder was completely disturbing.
- 47:22Speaker 1: So we did watch a scene from how they did that. Yeah,
- 47:25Speaker 1: And apparently, from what I understand is that a film
- 47:30Speaker 1: crew would come in every year and play that The
- 47:33Speaker 1: Town That Dreaded Sundown on a like outdoor type drive
- 47:37Speaker 1: in movie theater, and then all of a sudden, like
- 47:40Speaker 1: the town was like really mad that they were doing this.
- 47:42Speaker 1: They were like, could you please stop? We can literally
- 47:46Speaker 1: not get away from this story. And so we watched
- 47:50Speaker 1: a documentary and it was the documentary was like an
- 47:54Speaker 1: hour and a half long, but it was only like
- 47:55Speaker 1: a small portion. The filmmakers were going into this town
- 47:59Speaker 1: and then and the whole the newspaper printed out said, Hey,
- 48:02Speaker 1: we can't get away from the story that we had
- 48:04Speaker 1: all these serial killings back in the nineteen forties and
- 48:08Speaker 1: no one will let this go, that it was unsolved,
- 48:11Speaker 1: and that this disturbing thing happened in our town.
- 48:14Speaker 2: Yes, so they even took the Betty Joe had the
- 48:17Speaker 2: saxophone that she played at the BFW, Yes, but they
- 48:20Speaker 2: changed it to a trombone in the.
- 48:23Speaker 1: Yes in the movie and they had him like attach
- 48:27Speaker 1: a knife to it and like slowly playing it, playing
- 48:30Speaker 1: it and killing her. The Anyways, we definitely need to
- 48:33Speaker 1: watch this movie. As disturbing as it is, we need
- 48:36Speaker 1: to watch it because I feel like what they were
- 48:38Speaker 1: saying was like, this was the pre Halloween movie. This
- 48:42Speaker 1: was the quintessential horror movie. So, yeah, you guys need
- 48:45Speaker 1: to check it out if you are a horror movie buffs.
- 48:48Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure. If you like your Friday at thirteenth,
- 48:51Speaker 2: your Halloweens.
- 48:52Speaker 1: Yes, which we love. I love watching them during I'm
- 48:56Speaker 1: a they call them mood readers to I'm a mood
- 49:00Speaker 1: movie person. I love to watch Halloween movies at Halloween time,
- 49:06Speaker 1: Christmas movies at Christmas, Valentines at Valentine's.
- 49:10Speaker 2: Die hard every year at Christmas.
- 49:12Speaker 1: It's not a Christmas it.
- 49:13Speaker 2: Is a Christmas movie. Karen, Okay, yeah, it's Christmas movie.
- 49:18Speaker 1: All right. Well that's our story for this week. Stew
- 49:23Speaker 1: Do you have a y'all need Jesus?
- 49:25Speaker 2: Do you have one ready for Well, of course I do, Carol, Okay,
- 49:28Speaker 2: then let's always have one. I'm going to give it
- 49:31Speaker 2: to you.
- 49:31Speaker 1: Give it to me hard stew.
- 49:34Speaker 2: All Right, Karen, this week's y'all need Jesus. We have
- 49:39Speaker 2: highway patrol stops a rocketman truck with missiles mounted in
- 49:44Speaker 2: the bed near a city in a state Florida, not Florida.
- 49:53Speaker 1: I mean rockets in the bed of a truck. It's
- 49:58Speaker 1: got Florida written all over.
- 50:00Speaker 2: I mean, you are correct. Nowhere else do you go
- 50:02Speaker 2: in fact Florida. The short version is that Florida Highway
- 50:06Speaker 2: Patrol officers stop the truck near Plant City after multiple
- 50:11Speaker 2: drivers called it in because it had missiles mounted in
- 50:14Speaker 2: the bed. The driver ended up getting nicknamed Rocketman in
- 50:19Speaker 2: the reporting Rocketman.
- 50:21Speaker 1: Yes, well, you know Florida does have the sixation. Yes,
- 50:25Speaker 1: we've been there several times. We are frequent visitors. That's
- 50:30Speaker 1: like our thing we bring. We every time we bring
- 50:33Speaker 1: a new child and we take a picture in front of.
- 50:35Speaker 2: The Saturn fire rocket.
- 50:37Speaker 1: Is that what it is? Yeah, So when you take
- 50:39Speaker 1: the bus to the next if you're familiar with this,
- 50:43Speaker 1: when you so you arrive at the Kennedy Space Center,
- 50:46Speaker 1: you take a bus to the down and they added
- 50:49Speaker 1: a new stop this time though, she's where I got
- 50:51Speaker 1: into with that one lady. Anyways about the family Rush, Yes,
- 50:55Speaker 1: you stopped there, but then normally every other time besides
- 50:59Speaker 1: this last time, you go straight to this other area
- 51:01Speaker 1: where they got a bunch of different displays and what
- 51:04Speaker 1: was the.
- 51:04Speaker 2: What was the thing you said, Saturn five.
- 51:07Speaker 1: Yeah, So we always kneel down and we take and
- 51:09Speaker 1: people have asked to take pictures of them, were like, no,
- 51:12Speaker 1: we do a selfie. So it's always just a selfie.
- 51:14Speaker 1: And so each time we've had a new child every
- 51:16Speaker 1: time we've come.
- 51:17Speaker 2: Well, we did one, then we were there with three.
- 51:20Speaker 1: Yes, we skipped poor little twoty man, he just got
- 51:24Speaker 1: the We didn't make it back in time to get
- 51:27Speaker 1: the one the two, so we went one, three, and
- 51:30Speaker 1: then four. So we have three pictures with the four children,
- 51:34Speaker 1: and it's the same exact photo with us as a family,
- 51:37Speaker 1: like growing and adding new members. Anyways, it's one of
- 51:41Speaker 1: our things we do. So when we have the next child,
- 51:44Speaker 1: what Stull won't let me have any more children, although
- 51:48Speaker 1: you can have all the children you want with somebody else,
- 51:51Speaker 1: with whoever.
- 51:52Speaker 2: The dad of these other four is yes.
- 51:55Speaker 1: It's used to. Yeah.
- 51:58Speaker 2: Anyway, we had a guy in Altro, Okay. He was
- 52:03Speaker 2: all into the electronic stuff. He had taken He had
- 52:06Speaker 2: like a nineteen eighty something Mustang. He took the dash
- 52:09Speaker 2: out replaced.
- 52:11Speaker 1: It with nineteen eighty seven Mustang.
- 52:13Speaker 2: Nineteen eighty something Mustang.
- 52:15Speaker 1: Is it was it? It was eighties a big year
- 52:17Speaker 1: for all I know. Is like the Tacki Mustangs, which
- 52:21Speaker 1: were like two thousands.
- 52:24Speaker 2: They weren't cool, they were just the new ones are
- 52:26Speaker 2: really terrible. Yeah, well that there was some in the
- 52:29Speaker 2: nineteen seventies that were bad the nineteen eighties they got Okay.
- 52:33Speaker 1: I just feel like everybody's like I won in nineteen
- 52:35Speaker 1: sixty five Mustang, you know.
- 52:37Speaker 2: I would like another one y.
- 52:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:39Speaker 2: Anyway, he had like an eighty two or eighty four,
- 52:42Speaker 2: I don't know what it was. Anyway, he was begging
- 52:44Speaker 2: to whatever. Ripped out the entire dash put his own
- 52:47Speaker 2: stuff in there, his own gauges and everything that he
- 52:49Speaker 2: wired and everything. But he also put some little rockets
- 52:54Speaker 2: eight to ten inch little rockets under the back of
- 52:57Speaker 2: the car that would come are in the back. It
- 53:01Speaker 2: would come up out of the trunk.
- 53:02Speaker 1: Oh, so they would like he could push a button.
- 53:04Speaker 2: They could push a button and they would come up
- 53:06Speaker 2: like James Bond, Yes, and he had some underneath. They
- 53:09Speaker 2: were underneath the gas tank as well. Anywayrin Marine Corps
- 53:14Speaker 2: comes through. They're like, hey, we're going to repay the
- 53:18Speaker 2: parking lot of the Sparracks. Move all your cars. He
- 53:21Speaker 2: doesn't move his car. I don't rocket Man, he doesn't
- 53:24Speaker 2: move his car.
- 53:25Speaker 1: Rocket Man does not move.
- 53:26Speaker 2: He does not move his car. So they're like, okay,
- 53:28Speaker 2: we're going to come in with a forklift.
- 53:29Speaker 1: What year was this that they were doing this? So
- 53:31Speaker 1: this this car was like ten or twelve years old.
- 53:33Speaker 1: It was technically like a like a vintage.
- 53:37Speaker 2: Car, so it's like ninety two ninety three maybe.
- 53:40Speaker 1: So it's like ten years old.
- 53:42Speaker 2: This car ten fifteen years old. So they come in
- 53:45Speaker 2: with the forklift, they lift his car up. They see
- 53:47Speaker 2: all these rockets on the bottom underneath his gas tank.
- 53:50Speaker 2: They're like, oh god, this guy we got we got
- 53:53Speaker 2: a situation.
- 53:54Speaker 1: We got a terrorist on base.
- 53:56Speaker 2: EOD is called what's EODS Explosives Ordinance Disposal is called.
- 54:03Speaker 2: They clear out all the barracks, the whole shebanga bang.
- 54:07Speaker 2: They're like, evacuate the barracks, we don't care, don't grab nothing,
- 54:11Speaker 2: just leave.
- 54:12Speaker 1: Go somewhere except the airplane. Don't grab your luggage exactly.
- 54:17Speaker 2: So, yes, this fella had his little rockets wired up.
- 54:20Speaker 2: They would actually shoot out. They weren't explosive or nothing.
- 54:23Speaker 2: They wouldn't explode, they would just shoot out. I guess
- 54:26Speaker 2: they could go through your radiator if you were tailgating
- 54:29Speaker 2: the guy and he.
- 54:30Speaker 1: As they deserve to be.
- 54:31Speaker 2: Yes, however, yes, that was our story. EOD evacuated the barracks.
- 54:37Speaker 2: Oh boy, he had to go do some explaining to
- 54:40Speaker 2: the CEO. I think he actually did a little time, sir,
- 54:43Speaker 2: for Oh, well he did. This was a guy that
- 54:46Speaker 2: was he forged his own.
- 54:47Speaker 1: Notes, seem above the board. Okay.
- 54:50Speaker 2: He was trying to get out of the military. Okay,
- 54:54Speaker 2: so he's doing all.
- 54:54Speaker 1: Kinds of Putting rockets on his car was a.
- 54:57Speaker 2: That was solid move. That was not part of the plan.
- 55:00Speaker 1: But let me put rockets in the core, let me
- 55:03Speaker 1: send in a bomb threat.
- 55:05Speaker 2: This guy didn't want to ship.
- 55:06Speaker 1: Let me break an ankle.
- 55:08Speaker 2: He didn't want to shave his face, Okay, so he
- 55:10Speaker 2: forged and no shave chit like you had to skin
- 55:13Speaker 2: condition and act like some kind of act near friends.
- 55:17Speaker 2: I was never friends with the guy, but I knew,
- 55:19Speaker 2: we well know about him. He was kind of odd.
- 55:22Speaker 2: So he forged his own no shave chip and got
- 55:25Speaker 2: away with it for months. He just had a full
- 55:27Speaker 2: grown beard. In the Marine Corps, he was like, yeah,
- 55:30Speaker 2: I got no shave chit. You know, I got skin conditions.
- 55:33Speaker 1: That's a bunch of bullshit.
- 55:34Speaker 2: But then he was like, okay, I'm getting out of
- 55:36Speaker 2: the Marine Corps. This is it. So he would go
- 55:38Speaker 2: to the park and he would call the MPs. He
- 55:43Speaker 2: would say there's this really drunk guy at the park.
- 55:46Speaker 2: You need to go check on him.
- 55:48Speaker 1: Was he the really drunk ey Yes?
- 55:50Speaker 2: Okay, So because if you got so many alcohol related incidents,
- 55:54Speaker 2: they would just kick you out of the Marine Corps.
- 55:56Speaker 1: Why can't you just exit on your own accord?
- 55:59Speaker 2: Because they were like, well, screw this guy. So he
- 56:02Speaker 2: got put into the legal system and he ended up
- 56:05Speaker 2: spending like another six to eight Months's.
- 56:08Speaker 1: Name I was doing at this time. We need to
- 56:11Speaker 1: facebook stock him, we need to find out where this
- 56:14Speaker 1: person is.
- 56:15Speaker 2: So he spent like another eight or six months, six
- 56:17Speaker 2: to eight months longer in the Marine Corps than he
- 56:19Speaker 2: would have originally entered his original like, ok he would
- 56:22Speaker 2: have just done his time and got out because he
- 56:24Speaker 2: was on legal hold and he had to go through
- 56:25Speaker 2: the whole legal system to get kicked out of the
- 56:28Speaker 2: Marine Corps.
- 56:29Speaker 1: Okay, So that's our segue from.
- 56:32Speaker 2: From Rocketman in Florida to rocket Man in California. I
- 56:37Speaker 2: don't know, did we or did you interrupt me? No?
- 56:39Speaker 1: I think you interrupted yourself.
- 56:41Speaker 2: With this, did I singing? Rocket Man? Yeah?
- 56:45Speaker 1: So apparently multiple people called in that he had rockets
- 56:48Speaker 1: in the back of his vehicle. Yes, and then he
- 56:53Speaker 1: got nicknamed Rocketman.
- 56:54Speaker 2: Yes, can we say that? I said that?
- 56:57Speaker 1: So apparently they were like low budget action movie props.
- 57:01Speaker 1: Did you say that they weren't actually rockets?
- 57:05Speaker 2: Are you reading my thing?
- 57:06Speaker 1: Yes, that's what they said.
- 57:09Speaker 2: Yes, you know it sounds like my rocket Man went
- 57:11Speaker 2: to Florida and pulled the same shit.
- 57:13Speaker 1: I was just gonna say if I could give a similar,
- 57:16Speaker 1: somewhat similar story, because this is the end of the podcast.
- 57:19Speaker 1: So if you're here, your family, you know, it's like
- 57:22Speaker 1: Olive gardens, all the habits if you hear your family, okay,
- 57:27Speaker 1: all the HAPs ebbs hebs, Hey, everyone buys jus. I'm
- 57:33Speaker 1: surprised we've moved on from we're about to move to
- 57:37Speaker 1: the back porch stew if we're gonna.
- 57:38Speaker 2: We're gonna have to because you're already eight to ten shots.
- 57:41Speaker 1: I know, because the baby wouldn't go. The baby's been
- 57:44Speaker 1: off on his schedule and he is staying up super late.
- 57:48Speaker 1: So like, yeah, if you're here, like we did really good.
- 57:51Speaker 1: We stuck to the script on the actual crime.
- 57:54Speaker 2: I'm surprised that you held it together for as many shots.
- 57:57Speaker 1: As let me tell you what let me tell you
- 58:01Speaker 1: my similar situation as rocketmand in the parking lot with
- 58:05Speaker 1: the military investigating his car. I was in high school.
- 58:12Speaker 1: I had nineteen ninety two Honda Prelude.
- 58:15Speaker 2: I do like.
- 58:17Speaker 1: It was gold. It had a back seat. I put
- 58:20Speaker 1: leopard pillows in the back seat. I was I made
- 58:23Speaker 1: them myself, do I I've met these slipper pillows. They
- 58:29Speaker 1: were like rectangular shape in the back seat I had.
- 58:33Speaker 2: Because you couldn't wait to get home to a bed.
- 58:35Speaker 1: No, I just wanted to like make it like chic.
- 58:40Speaker 1: I thought that was cool. I had a Scooby Doo,
- 58:44Speaker 1: you know, like those things that they used to make.
- 58:47Speaker 1: We should get one for our cars too. Back in
- 58:49Speaker 1: the day, you know, like when they would like be bobbleheads.
- 58:52Speaker 1: See you'd be driving along. So I had a Scooby
- 58:55Speaker 1: Doo one so his neck would like bobble or whatever,
- 58:58Speaker 1: like move around or whatever. You know what I'm talking about.
- 59:02Speaker 2: Yes, I've seen a Bible head.
- 59:04Speaker 1: Yes, so it was a bubblehead Scooby Doo. And which
- 59:07Speaker 1: is so funny because our kids love Scooby Doo. I mean,
- 59:11Speaker 1: he is. If I didn't hate, if I didn't know
- 59:14Speaker 1: great danes, which that's just terrible dogs. I'd get one,
- 59:18Speaker 1: but they're terrible dog Scoby.
- 59:20Speaker 2: Yes.
- 59:21Speaker 1: So anyway, so I had a bubblehead Scooby Doo. So
- 59:24Speaker 1: I'm sitting in class in high school or whatever, and
- 59:28Speaker 1: all of a sudden, the resource officer, you know, like
- 59:30Speaker 1: the officer that's on the campus. I was in a
- 59:33Speaker 1: pretty I was in a five A school, so it's
- 59:36Speaker 1: a pretty big school comes into my classroom like, hey,
- 59:38Speaker 1: you need to come out here to your car.
- 59:41Speaker 2: So I'm like, we got to talk to you.
- 59:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm like, I mean, I was on the softball team.
- 59:46Speaker 1: I had taken drug. I've never done a drug in
- 59:48Speaker 1: my life, like Stu's another question, but I have never
- 59:52Speaker 1: I mean I partaken the alcohol, but I have never
- 59:55Speaker 1: literally never done a drug in my life. I've never
- 59:57Speaker 1: smoked weed. I've never done any of that. This out
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: my my thing or whatever, and that's not my jam.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: Stew on the other hand, has dabbled, what done done something? Anyway,
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: So I'm like, wow, this is like super crazy because
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: I was straight a student on the softball team with
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: the bow in my hair, like straight and arrow and
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: everything like that. So they come in and and I
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: still see this in my head. This is why I'm
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: telling this story because like I can. It's one of
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: those like concrete memories that just like in your head,
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: you can see it. So I go out there. I'm
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: standing in front of the Gold nineteen ninety two, a
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: prelude that I had with the leopard Scooby Doo thing
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: on the thing, and I'm like, what the fuck did
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: I buy from this guy that like I bought this
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: car from, you know? And the thing was that the
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: guy that I bought it from his uncle, his grandpa
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: sold it to me as like a family thing or whatever,
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: so I didn't have to pay taxes. I don't know
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: how that was, but we were in a small town.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: So he was like, yeah, so the drug dogs hit
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: on it. It's like what is happening? And they didn't
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: find anything, okay, But I was like, oh my god,
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: I'm about to get in trouble. I started, I started
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: over explaining, I'm like, I bought this car from somebody
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: like and all I remember is then taken, yes, And
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: all I remember is then like this is sixteen year
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: old Kara there. They took the Scooby Doo head off
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: of the Scooby Doo body, and I remember the dog sniffing,
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: and I was like, what the It traumatized me them
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: smelling the dog was smelling everything, and I'm like trying
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: to explain what I'm like. Those are my clean to
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: the backs?
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: Yes, so very similar that they were going to ask
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: you about the mobile prostitution couch had in the back
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: seat with the leopard.
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: Yeah, Stuart, I was sixteen years old. I thought they
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: were cool. My whole room was done in jungle theme. Anyways, Okay,
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: this is at the end of the podcast, so that's
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: acceptable that we are off topic. Okay, so.
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: Had pillows in the back of your car, Didge.
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: We're going to see you on the porch.
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: Yes, are you going to make it to the porch.
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: I'm gonna make it to the porch. That's our whole theme. Guys. Okay,
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: so we have revamped the podcast.
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: They've already heard that all of you. You explained that
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: for twenty minutes beginning. Oh I did episode. Yeah, all
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: of you are.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: We're we're we're forgernks deep into the weekly Poor at

- 1:02:50Speaker 2: Is old grandad. Okay, your old granddad.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: Listen to me, though, Listen to me, this feels like, oh,
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: so we stuck to the port on the actual true
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: crime case that we just covered. However, on the porch
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: on Friday nights, wheneverybody gets the episode.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: With your pat and leopard pillows.
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: Yes, I feel like they're gonna get og bless this mess.
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: Bless this mess and the trick podcast Stu drinking too much,
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: falling asleep, having to start the next day. I feel

- 1:03:28Speaker 1: to the point true crime on the weekly episode, and
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: then they're getting og blessed this mess that on Fridays.
