- 0:00Speaker 1: I think trying to avoid those negative reinforcement loops and
- 0:02Speaker 1: to understand that you're going to fall off the wagon.
- 0:04Speaker 1: That's okay to show up and just show up to
- 0:06Speaker 1: your workout, even if you don't get the best workout,
- 0:09Speaker 1: and just show up and start pushing that snowball back
- 0:11Speaker 1: down the hill and get that positive reinforcement of going again.
- 0:28Speaker 2: What is shaken Evliabadi? Here?
- 0:31Speaker 3: You are listening to episode two hundred and thirty eight
- 0:34Speaker 3: of Hurdle, a wellness focused podcast.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Reconnect with everyone.
- 0:37Speaker 3: From your favorite athletes to top experts and industry CEOs
- 0:41Speaker 3: about their highest highs, toughest moments, and everything in between.
- 0:45Speaker 3: We all go through hurdles in life, and my goal
- 0:48Speaker 3: through these discussions is to empower you to better navigate
- 0:50Speaker 3: yours and move with intention so that you can stride
- 0:54Speaker 3: towards your own big potential and of course have some
- 0:57Speaker 3: fun along the way. For today's episode, I am chatting
- 1:02Speaker 3: with Fritz Landman. He is the CEO of mind Body,
- 1:07Speaker 3: and you probably use mind Body more often than you know,
- 1:11Speaker 3: and you may not even realize it. Mind Body is
- 1:15Speaker 3: a cloud based software that provides online scheduling and other
- 1:19Speaker 3: business management software for the wellness services industry, so more
- 1:23Speaker 3: often than not, if you're booking a class, that class
- 1:28Speaker 3: uses mind Body to make that happen. Fritz and I
- 1:31Speaker 3: were introduced last year at the mind Body Bold conference
- 1:35Speaker 3: when I had the opportunity to sit down on stage
- 1:37Speaker 3: with the one and only Ashley Graham, and I was
- 1:41Speaker 3: so captivated by his story and knew that I wanted
- 1:46Speaker 3: to get him on the podcast.
- 1:48Speaker 2: He is a super savvy guy. Never in a.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Million years when he was young thinking that he would
- 1:54Speaker 3: be working at the intersection of tech and wellness, but
- 1:58Speaker 3: here we are. So with that said, Fritz comes to
- 2:02Speaker 3: this position at mind Body after heading up class Pass.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Mind Body actually acquired class Pass back in twenty twenty one,
- 2:11Speaker 3: and in today's episode, Fritz talks to me all about
- 2:14Speaker 3: the journey that got him here, including a difficult shoulder
- 2:18Speaker 3: injury which actually was the catalyst for his relationship with
- 2:23Speaker 3: wellness today. Fritz has a lot of really great advice
- 2:27Speaker 3: in today's episode. This one kind of reminds me of
- 2:30Speaker 3: the chat I had with Ali Already, the CEO and
- 2:33Speaker 3: founder of Tonal. As an entrepreneur myself, I can tell
- 2:38Speaker 3: you that this man has got business advice life advice.
- 2:42Speaker 2: That you are not going to want to miss out on.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Plus, it was so so interesting to hear him talk
- 2:47Speaker 3: about navigating the business during the pandemic.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Make sure, if.
- 2:52Speaker 3: You're not yet doing so, you're following Hurdle over on
- 2:55Speaker 3: social It's at Hurdle Podcast. I myself am over at
- 2:58Speaker 3: Emily a body and a shout out to Lauren, a
- 3:02Speaker 3: hurdler that was in town from Memphis visiting that I
- 3:05Speaker 3: ran into last night.
- 3:07Speaker 2: You made my day.
- 3:08Speaker 3: So if you ever around and you see me and
- 3:11Speaker 3: I see you, come say hi. It's so fun for
- 3:15Speaker 3: me to meet any and all of you in person.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Last little bit of housekeeping here. I am always always
- 3:21Speaker 3: always looking for your listener questions. I need them to
- 3:26Speaker 3: make the goodness that is five Minute Friday, an episode
- 3:29Speaker 3: that I'm told week after week is one of your
- 3:31Speaker 3: favorites and I want to keep it in the rotation.
- 3:33Speaker 3: So if you have a listener question, feel free to
- 3:36Speaker 3: leave me a voice message by clicking the link in
- 3:39Speaker 3: the show notes. If for some reason that page gives
- 3:41Speaker 3: you a problem, I've heard of that before, you can
- 3:44Speaker 3: always email me a voice note as well. The place
- 3:48Speaker 3: to send that is over at Hello at Hurdle dot us.
- 3:52Speaker 2: And with that, let's get to it. Let's get to hurdling. Today.
- 4:07Speaker 3: I am sitting down with Fritz Lanman. He is the
- 4:11Speaker 3: CEO of Mind Body. How you doing today?
- 4:14Speaker 1: I'm great? How are you?
- 4:15Speaker 2: I'm great.
- 4:16Speaker 3: It's good to see you from across the country. Whereas
- 4:20Speaker 3: the last time I spoke with you, we were in
- 4:22Speaker 3: the same place in La at a very big.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Moment for both of us, the Mind Body Bold Conference.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Indeed, yeah, it was a lot warmer than where I
- 4:31Speaker 1: am right now here in Montana.
- 4:33Speaker 3: In Montana, I'm living vicariously through you because it makes
- 4:36Speaker 3: me feel like you're close to Yellowstone.
- 4:39Speaker 1: You know the TV show Yellowstone. Do you watch that?
- 4:41Speaker 2: Of course I do. I watch it every Sunday, so
- 4:44Speaker 2: Beth the character's office.
- 4:46Speaker 1: And I heard law firm is in my office building
- 4:48Speaker 1: here in Missoula, and it's filmed just thirty miles south,
- 4:52Speaker 1: right over those mountains right here.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Oh my god, Oh what a dream, What a dream.
- 4:58Speaker 3: I definitely want to get to a place where we
- 4:59Speaker 3: can talk about how you ended up running Mind Body
- 5:02Speaker 3: from Montana.
- 5:03Speaker 2: But I don't want to jump ahead just yet.
- 5:05Speaker 3: I mean, I'm excited, though, to get to know a
- 5:07Speaker 3: little bit about you, because not only have you had
- 5:09Speaker 3: such a crazy career thus far as both an entrepreneur
- 5:13Speaker 3: are now at the front of such a major company,
- 5:16Speaker 3: but you also have a really interesting personal story. So
- 5:20Speaker 3: talk to us a little bit to get us started.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Did you ever think that you would be the CEO
- 5:25Speaker 3: of a company like mind Body.
- 5:27Speaker 1: You know, I've always been a tech geek, and so
- 5:30Speaker 1: I always thought I would end up in the tech industry.
- 5:33Speaker 1: I went to work for Microsoft out of right out
- 5:35Speaker 1: of college as an undergrad, but I never imagined I
- 5:39Speaker 1: could work at the intersection of wowness and technology like wellness.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Tech wasn't a thing that really existed when I graduated
- 5:46Speaker 1: from college. It was sort of the peak of the
- 5:48Speaker 1: dot com era. So it's sort of has all happened
- 5:51Speaker 1: fortuitously that I've been, you know, spending the last seven
- 5:54Speaker 1: or eight years in this particular subvertical of technology subvertical.
- 5:59Speaker 3: So now that you're in this vertical, I asked you
- 6:03Speaker 3: if you ever envisioned being the CEO of a company
- 6:05Speaker 3: like mind Body, But did you ever imagine yourself working
- 6:08Speaker 3: in wellness? What has your relationship with wellness looked like
- 6:12Speaker 3: from a young age.
- 6:14Speaker 1: So definitely never anticipated being a CEO of a wellness company,
- 6:17Speaker 1: but you know, would have liked to have thought that
- 6:19Speaker 1: being a CEO of a tech company was a likely outcome.
- 6:23Speaker 1: But that doesn't mean I wasn't into wellness. I was.
- 6:25Speaker 1: I was an athlete. I was the captain of high
- 6:28Speaker 1: school basketball team and a pretty crappy high school football
- 6:32Speaker 1: player and very mediocre golfer. I had kind of always
- 6:38Speaker 1: played sports growing up. I'm the most of five boys,
- 6:41Speaker 1: and you know, sports always an important part of my life.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Suffered a catastrophic shoulder dislocation my freshman year of college
- 6:48Speaker 1: at Yale. But I never was like hardcore about working out.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Always into wellness, mostly through the lens of athletics. Kind
- 6:55Speaker 1: of got my career going out of college. Was pretty
- 6:57Speaker 1: hardcore about that, worked really long hours and slowly and
- 7:01Speaker 1: sort of without knowing it, fell dramatically out of shape,
- 7:04Speaker 1: perhaps have a rational amount of self esteem or something
- 7:08Speaker 1: that I didn't notice it, but you know, and I
- 7:10Speaker 1: would kind of come and go and have periods of
- 7:12Speaker 1: peak motivation and not and go to the gym. But
- 7:14Speaker 1: the gym for me was always a bit more of
- 7:16Speaker 1: like a job, like was part of our training for
- 7:19Speaker 1: sports was Hey, you got to get in the weight room,
- 7:21Speaker 1: or running was punishment. And it wasn't until I actually
- 7:25Speaker 1: started working with class Pass, you know, which is sort
- 7:28Speaker 1: of incubated and led the Seed round four and was
- 7:31Speaker 1: coaching the founders on that I had ever really tried
- 7:33Speaker 1: studio fitness, and it really ignited something in me because
- 7:38Speaker 1: to me, it felt like the intersection of sort of
- 7:40Speaker 1: working out in sports, having that camaraderie, that that sort
- 7:43Speaker 1: of coopetition that instructor feedback and accountability the challenges of
- 7:48Speaker 1: the different techniques. You know. It really worked for me.
- 7:50Speaker 1: So I went from being you know, accidentally kind of
- 7:54Speaker 1: terribly out of shape with dangerously high cholesterol rates, you know,
- 7:58Speaker 1: in my early thirties, to you know, taking dramatic changes
- 8:04Speaker 1: to my lifestyle and wellness in conjunction was starting to
- 8:07Speaker 1: run class Pass that I've mostly stuck with for the last.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Seven or eight years mostly.
- 8:13Speaker 3: Yeah, when you say catastrophic shoulder injury, give us some
- 8:16Speaker 3: more info on that.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Yeah, if you're a Bruce Willis fan and saw him
- 8:22Speaker 1: dislocate his shoulder and leave the weapon and reset it,
- 8:26Speaker 1: that happened to me in a basketball game like a six'
- 8:29Speaker 1: ten guy. JUMPED i dove for a. Ball my arm
- 8:32Speaker 1: was outstretched on a basketball court grabbing the, ball and
- 8:35Speaker 1: somebody who was six y ten and probably weigh two
- 8:37Speaker 1: hundred and sixty pounds dove for, it landed on my
- 8:41Speaker 1: outstretched arm and it fully dislocated out of the. Socket
- 8:44Speaker 1: and it was such a bad. DISLOCATION i couldn't reset,
- 8:47Speaker 1: it nor could a trainer who was. There SO i
- 8:49Speaker 1: had to go to the er and it took like
- 8:52Speaker 1: an hour and got morphined up and, they you, know
- 8:55Speaker 1: took a doctor and three nurses to yank me back
- 8:58Speaker 1: and forth and reset. It and, unfortunately that becomes an
- 9:03Speaker 1: injury that recurs because you've loosened up the. Sockets and
- 9:06Speaker 1: so it happened a few other times in various training.
- 9:10Speaker 1: SITUATIONS i got a surgery on. IT i was exploring
- 9:13Speaker 1: going to the military out of college and got a
- 9:16Speaker 1: surgery on it BECAUSE i was disqualified to do. That
- 9:19Speaker 1: and then a year, later by then my career is taking,
- 9:21Speaker 1: off and the surgery worked for about ten, years and
- 9:24Speaker 1: THEN i redislocated it again playing, basketball and most recently
- 9:28Speaker 1: did it actually at a CrossFit. Gym but NOW i
- 9:30Speaker 1: can actually reset it most of the, time and it
- 9:32Speaker 1: looks kind of badass IF i dislocated and reset.
- 9:35Speaker 2: It even if it looks kind of bad.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Ass you, KNOW i got in a bike accident not
- 9:40Speaker 3: long ago and it's.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Healing but you're making, me you are making me.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Nervous, YEAH i mean. Injuries you, Know i've, learned and
- 9:49Speaker 1: it's not just because Now i'm in my, forties but
- 9:51Speaker 1: how much it sets you. Back but you, know even
- 9:54Speaker 1: at those young, ages you, know kind of derailed my
- 9:58Speaker 1: aspirational athletic career. Wellness this is an important part of
- 10:01Speaker 1: my life now that it's tough to when you suffer
- 10:04Speaker 1: through those kinds of. Injuries.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Yeah and What i'm hearing you say also in telling
- 10:09Speaker 3: us and sharing with us your story about navigating the
- 10:11Speaker 3: shoulder issues and then finding fitness kind of later in,
- 10:15Speaker 3: life is that you found fitness at a time that was.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Really hectic for.
- 10:20Speaker 3: You how did you make it a regular bit despite
- 10:23Speaker 3: being knee deep in building Class.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Pass, yeah that's a great. QUESTION i MEAN i had
- 10:30Speaker 1: the added motivation Of i'd put a lot of money
- 10:33Speaker 1: into Class pass and THEN i ended up the founder
- 10:36Speaker 1: asked me to step in and take the operating ring
- 10:38Speaker 1: so we switched jobs and she became the chairman AND
- 10:40Speaker 1: i became THE, ceo and SO i had a business
- 10:42Speaker 1: incentive to do. It AND i had a boss back
- 10:46Speaker 1: In microsoft too and told, me you, know choose two
- 10:49Speaker 1: out of three things your, health your, career and your.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Relationships AND i had sort of for my twenties chosen
- 10:55Speaker 1: my career and my relationships and had sort of put
- 10:59Speaker 1: my health, again not, consciously but just wasn't really. AWARE
- 11:03Speaker 1: i wasn't really trained in my, nutrition was on flights
- 11:07Speaker 1: all the, time you, know living kind of biicostal, lifestyle
- 11:10Speaker 1: working on my different companies and, stuff and just had
- 11:13Speaker 1: kind of fallen by the. Wayside so ONCE i had
- 11:15Speaker 1: a a business incentive and then found a fitness genre
- 11:20Speaker 1: and format and routine which was a variety routine for,
- 11:23Speaker 1: me that's really WHEN i fell in love with it
- 11:26Speaker 1: and then started to, realize you, know not only DO
- 11:29Speaker 1: i have a business reason to do this BECAUSE i
- 11:31Speaker 1: need to know this, industry but you, know it makes
- 11:34Speaker 1: me a smarter kind of, consumer and it makes me
- 11:38Speaker 1: a more productive leader WHEN i WHEN i actually have
- 11:40Speaker 1: a workout you know in the. Day, yeah to answer your, question, like,
- 11:43Speaker 1: really you know you can come up with every. Excuse
- 11:47Speaker 1: this whole, industry there's so much about it is around.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Motivation it's the it's the biggest problem that all of us,
- 11:52Speaker 1: have whether it's with nutrition or or worth working, out
- 11:56Speaker 1: is staying on, that having that, motivation having that. Discipline
- 12:00Speaker 1: the Way i've done it is just prioritize it and sounds,
- 12:03Speaker 1: cliche but like my team knows that we make it
- 12:06Speaker 1: socially acceptable to work out during the day and to
- 12:09Speaker 1: block off your calendar and to wear athleisure at, work
- 12:11Speaker 1: and to take time to prioritize, that AND i think
- 12:15Speaker 1: it's important THAT i show that example to the. Company.
- 12:17Speaker 3: Definitely, Definitely so you take on this role OF ceo
- 12:22Speaker 3: at class, past talk to us about maybe what some
- 12:26Speaker 3: of your biggest learnings were right off the. BAT i, mean,
- 12:29Speaker 3: again this is a pivot for you coming from other former,
- 12:33Speaker 3: jobs including this one At.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Microsoft.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah i'd been At. Microsoft i'd become an executive.
- 12:39Speaker 1: THERE i then was starting companies and angel investing in
- 12:42Speaker 1: businesses and investing in businesses Like square And pinterests actually
- 12:46Speaker 1: just made me want to be an. Entrepreneur and you,
- 12:48Speaker 1: Know i'm sort of trying to help these founders WHERE i.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Can So i'd started a few businesses and one was
- 12:53Speaker 1: a great, success one was an epic, failure and Class
- 12:56Speaker 1: pass was sort of the adopted. Baby and running a
- 13:00Speaker 1: hypergrowth tech company is not something that you can train. For.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Right you can join a large company that's established and
- 13:07Speaker 1: move up the career, ladder And i'd had that. Experience
- 13:10Speaker 1: you can start a company and you have a nine
- 13:12Speaker 1: out of chance of, failing especially in, tech And i'd
- 13:15Speaker 1: had that, experience And i'd had you, know one that,
- 13:18Speaker 1: work but we sold it pretty early. On i'd never
- 13:20Speaker 1: had the experience of kind of coming into something that
- 13:23Speaker 1: was experiencing hyper, growth going through multiple fundraising, rounds having
- 13:26Speaker 1: to hire hundreds of, people having your business model pivots
- 13:30Speaker 1: on the, fly you, know scaling it globally to thirty.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Countries so nothing can really prepare, YOU i don't think
- 13:37Speaker 1: for you, know being the driver's seat for a company
- 13:40Speaker 1: that's going through that kind of. Scaling it just Doesn't
- 13:42Speaker 1: there isn't really a training mechanism for, it other than
- 13:45Speaker 1: maybe joining a startup that's in rapid growth and becoming an.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Executive so but even, then like you, know you can
- 13:52Speaker 1: buy all the business books that you. Want you can
- 13:54Speaker 1: read all the blog posts that you, want you can
- 13:55Speaker 1: have all of the coaching sessions and mentorship sessions that you.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Want until you're actually in the, seat you can't figure it.
- 14:03Speaker 1: OUT i think that was the greatest learning, Was, hey
- 14:05Speaker 1: just get in there and start figuring it. Out everyone
- 14:08Speaker 1: you know has imposter. Syndrome nobody was prepared for. This
- 14:11Speaker 1: Bill gates wasn't trained to be A. Ceo neither Was Jeff,
- 14:14Speaker 1: Bezos neither Was Sheryl sandberg or you know any great
- 14:18Speaker 1: executive who's achieved a lot Of steve, jobs, like they
- 14:21Speaker 1: all just had to kind of figure it out as they.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Went, yeah, yeah so give us a timeline here as
- 14:26Speaker 3: to when you stepped in AS.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Ceo SO i invested in the, beginning so the founders
- 14:32Speaker 1: had it was called Class. Tivity WHEN i, INVESTED i
- 14:35Speaker 1: led the seed round that was twenty, thirteen is when
- 14:38Speaker 1: it became Class pass and Then pyle asked me to
- 14:41Speaker 1: step in and run it In december of twenty. Fifteen,
- 14:44Speaker 1: okay and kind of, decided, Hey i'll do this for
- 14:46Speaker 1: a year or two and see how it. Goes and
- 14:48Speaker 1: once we'd kind of really fixed the business, model and
- 14:50Speaker 1: we're scaling. It it was, like you, know really had
- 14:52Speaker 1: fallen in love with the industry and also just a
- 14:54Speaker 1: once in a sort of career chance to scale the
- 14:57Speaker 1: company from you, know twenty five cities to thirty countries
- 15:00Speaker 1: and hundreds of cities and to hopefully take it.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Public and when you earlier to double click on, this you,
- 15:08Speaker 3: said a routine of. Variety what did variety look like
- 15:11Speaker 3: for you within your fitness routine at that?
- 15:14Speaker 1: Time so the beauty of class past WHICH i didn't
- 15:18Speaker 1: appreciate UNTIL i started using, it is that is that
- 15:22Speaker 1: you really can build a variety. Routine now this doesn't
- 15:25Speaker 1: a common misconception is that class pastors don't. Habituate they.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Do the way it works is down the app you
- 15:32Speaker 1: look at the stuff around. You you spend your first
- 15:34Speaker 1: thirty or sixty days kind of like a shopping period
- 15:37Speaker 1: to use the college class shopping, analogy like you're testing
- 15:40Speaker 1: different stuff, out seeing what, genre seeing what, brands seeing
- 15:43Speaker 1: what instructors you. Like but almost all of them by
- 15:46Speaker 1: their second or third month have habituated into a variety of.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Places and so for, me that was adding three or
- 15:53Speaker 1: four different places and then going back to those each,
- 15:56Speaker 1: week so THAT i wasn't doing the same exact workout
- 15:59Speaker 1: with the same. INSTRUCTURE i would see each instructor once a,
- 16:02Speaker 1: week you, know BUT i would do four or five
- 16:04Speaker 1: workouts a. Week, now that routine was different between WHERE
- 16:08Speaker 1: i was. LIVING i was living bi coostally Between San
- 16:10Speaker 1: francisco And New. York so and then ONCE i Added
- 16:13Speaker 1: montana to my travel, routine you, know obviously kind of
- 16:16Speaker 1: a different footprint Than chelsea In New, york where we
- 16:19Speaker 1: have every studio fitness opportunity in the. World In San,
- 16:21Speaker 1: FRANCISCO i lived near a CrossFit, gym so that's WHEN
- 16:24Speaker 1: i kind of got into. CrossFit and here In montana
- 16:27Speaker 1: there was you, know a like hybrid of, gyms climbing
- 16:30Speaker 1: gyms and a few.
- 16:32Speaker 3: Studios, okay, okay so a lot of variety. Here you
- 16:36Speaker 3: also mentioned kind of re. INJURY i hate to jump,
- 16:39Speaker 3: around but Now i'm curious re injuring yourself again doing
- 16:42Speaker 3: CrossFit not all that long. AGO i feel as though
- 16:46Speaker 3: injury can be something that really dissuaded someone from getting
- 16:49Speaker 3: back into, fitness knowing that they've worked so hard to
- 16:52Speaker 3: find perhaps some sort of a, routine and then we're
- 16:55Speaker 3: dissuaded as in your. Experience so what piece of advice
- 16:58Speaker 3: do you have for someone maybe has gone through a
- 17:01Speaker 3: similar event as you.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Did, YEAH i, mean you're absolutely. Right the Key i've
- 17:08Speaker 1: learned is any little piece of friction that gets added
- 17:11Speaker 1: reduces your propensity to work. Out. Right you can always
- 17:14Speaker 1: come up with an. Excuse you always have more work
- 17:16Speaker 1: to be, Done you always have that other person you
- 17:18Speaker 1: can go spend your time. With, You you can come
- 17:20Speaker 1: up with good reasons to not work out in that
- 17:22Speaker 1: moment in. Time it's always it's like it's funny because
- 17:26Speaker 1: it's like like And i'm in the business of selling people.
- 17:28Speaker 1: Fitness it's like people never are excited to work, out
- 17:31Speaker 1: even like the most like you, know the best athletes
- 17:34Speaker 1: in the world are like still like you, know that
- 17:35Speaker 1: moment of having to get up and do their workout
- 17:38Speaker 1: is still requires them to self. Motivate SO i think
- 17:41Speaker 1: the ADVICE i give is reduce the, friction, right do
- 17:44Speaker 1: everything you can to reduce the. Friction so you, know for,
- 17:47Speaker 1: me that, is IF i don't hit my six thirty,
- 17:49Speaker 1: WORKOUT i always have my noon to one slot, open
- 17:54Speaker 1: so that AND i make SURE i do not schedule meetings.
- 17:57Speaker 1: There at, BEST i get to use it for personal work,
- 18:00Speaker 1: time you, know because there's never enough time in the.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Day at, worse IF i don't get my workout in
- 18:04Speaker 1: the morning BECAUSE i can't motivate to get, up THEN
- 18:06Speaker 1: i get my ass up AND i, go you, know
- 18:08Speaker 1: and hit the gym and get a. Workout. It so for,
- 18:11Speaker 1: me it's like you, know committing to, it wearing that
- 18:15Speaker 1: ath leisure to, work you, know so THAT i can
- 18:19Speaker 1: have a routine that's not too much friction. Full IF
- 18:21Speaker 1: i have to, change then go don't doesn't, happen, Right
- 18:23Speaker 1: so IF i don't get my work out in the,
- 18:25Speaker 1: MORNING i wear ath leisure to, work and everyone in
- 18:27Speaker 1: the in the office Knows i'm going to be gone
- 18:29Speaker 1: from twelve to one BECAUSE i didn't get my workout
- 18:31Speaker 1: in that. Morning and that kind of keeps me. Accountable
- 18:33Speaker 1: SO i would just find ways to minimize the. Friction
- 18:36Speaker 1: and that's something we think about a lot of class
- 18:38Speaker 1: pass and now With Mind body with The Mind body
- 18:40Speaker 1: app is how do you minimize the number of clicks
- 18:43Speaker 1: it takes to book that workout to get over that commitment,
- 18:47Speaker 1: hurdle you, know and then once you've kind of booked
- 18:49Speaker 1: in an, advance it's harder to back out at.
- 18:51Speaker 2: The last, minute minimize the.
- 18:53Speaker 3: FRICTION i really love, THAT i really, do AND i
- 18:57Speaker 3: totally understand what you're saying about habitual and class. Paths you,
- 19:01Speaker 3: know LIKE i went through my first iteration of being
- 19:04Speaker 3: a Class pass, member god maybe like eight or nine years,
- 19:07Speaker 3: ago stopped using for a number of, years and only
- 19:10Speaker 3: started using again recently and probably WITHIN i would, say
- 19:14Speaker 3: two to three, months just like you're, SAYING i found
- 19:17Speaker 3: the three or four things THAT i like to do
- 19:19Speaker 3: within the parameters of my membership every single, month AND
- 19:22Speaker 3: i essentially use Class pass for those same three or
- 19:24Speaker 3: four things every single month.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Period and, now, YEAH i, mean and that is the
- 19:31Speaker 1: path to success in working, out is what we've. Seen
- 19:34Speaker 1: and so Class pass realized that people would stay active
- 19:37Speaker 1: longer if they got into that habituated, routine and so
- 19:40Speaker 1: we reinforce. It you, know we have the home screen
- 19:43Speaker 1: in the app is trying to nudge you into. Rebooking
- 19:45Speaker 1: now some, people you, Know, oh by the, way the
- 19:49Speaker 1: other thing we've started doing in Class, pass which people
- 19:51Speaker 1: don't seem to know, about is adding beauty and wellness,
- 19:53Speaker 1: appointments so you can do.
- 19:54Speaker 3: Correct those are two of the appointments THAT i do
- 19:56Speaker 3: every single month via Class.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Past there you, go, yeah you, know our goal of
- 20:00Speaker 1: there is just keep adding more stuff to help you
- 20:02Speaker 1: find your thing and help you find that. Routine you,
- 20:05Speaker 1: know some people don't like the trade offs and booking
- 20:07Speaker 1: through Class. Pass they'd rather book direct when they want
- 20:09Speaker 1: or just be a ten pac kind of. Purchaser so for,
- 20:11Speaker 1: them they can use The Mind body app and we
- 20:13Speaker 1: still try to encourage that habituated behavior because, again you,
- 20:17Speaker 1: know back to your question about. Injuries one thing THAT i,
- 20:20Speaker 1: did on the encouragement of my CrossFit, Coach jim affiliate
- 20:24Speaker 1: coach here was even IF i couldn't do the workout
- 20:27Speaker 1: of the day BECAUSE i had dislocated my shoulder Doing turkish,
- 20:30Speaker 1: getups just still show up at the, Gym like you
- 20:34Speaker 1: can still find a, way you can still get your
- 20:36Speaker 1: air squats, in you can do you, know sit. Ups
- 20:39Speaker 1: there was exercises THAT i would use it for a pte.
- 20:42Speaker 1: Time so one THING i found is just like you,
- 20:44Speaker 1: know committing to that routine and even if you don't
- 20:48Speaker 1: have your personal pr best, workout like if you just
- 20:50Speaker 1: keep showing, up eventually get back into.
- 20:52Speaker 3: IT i keep cycling back to other things that you,
- 20:54Speaker 3: said because there was a lot of interesting stuff in
- 20:56Speaker 3: THERE i really. Appreciated And i'm marinated over this concept
- 21:01Speaker 3: of only being able to focus on two buckets at a.
- 21:04Speaker 3: TIME i feel like so often we get that analogy that's, like,
- 21:06Speaker 3: say there's like four buckets of things that you're like
- 21:09Speaker 3: prioritizing in your, life and you, know it is easy
- 21:12Speaker 3: to get to a place where you are only focusing
- 21:15Speaker 3: on those. Two but then what happens when like maybe
- 21:17Speaker 3: the other two completely run? Dry like did you feel
- 21:20Speaker 3: like in your pursuit of focusing on family and career
- 21:25Speaker 3: that you did get to a point maybe like with
- 21:28Speaker 3: health being one of your remaining two buckets that you
- 21:31Speaker 3: felt as though you were just so run down and?
- 21:33Speaker 2: Empty for?
- 21:35Speaker 1: Sure, Yeah and you, know BUT i Think i'm matured
- 21:41Speaker 1: and realized that boss wasn't necessarily right and you can
- 21:43Speaker 1: actually find ways to. Balance and you, know work is
- 21:47Speaker 1: the one that there's always more work that you can, do,
- 21:49Speaker 1: right and as a startup, entrepreneur it's the one variable
- 21:52Speaker 1: that you feel like you could control is how much you,
- 21:55Speaker 1: work and so you tend to just keep doing. It
- 21:57Speaker 1: to maximize your chances of. Success but at some point
- 22:00Speaker 1: it definitely becomes a false economy if you don't have
- 22:03Speaker 1: not just your, wellness but you, know good, healthy productive
- 22:06Speaker 1: relationships with a romantic, partner with your, children with good.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Friends you, KNOW i find it to be a false.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Economy so the OLDER i, get you, know the MORE
- 22:16Speaker 1: i tend to try to espouse that balance in the
- 22:18Speaker 1: false economy nature of just leaning into two things in.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Life life's.
- 22:21Speaker 3: Multifaceted life is multi Facet, Okay SO i would be
- 22:25Speaker 3: remiss now if we didn't get to the point where
- 22:28Speaker 3: we're talking about being THE ceo of class class during
- 22:32Speaker 3: a global.
- 22:32Speaker 2: Pandemic where do we even begin?
- 22:34Speaker 1: THERE i, mean, yeah that it wasn't high in my
- 22:38Speaker 1: list of career aspirations to run a fitness company during
- 22:41Speaker 1: a one to one hundred year, pandemic for. Sure CANDIDLY
- 22:45Speaker 1: i was lucky on two. Dimensions, One we had just
- 22:49Speaker 1: raised over a quarter billion dollars In december of twenty,
- 22:53Speaker 1: Nineteen so we were fresh off of a really huge
- 22:57Speaker 1: fundraise built on the success of our global expansion and
- 23:00Speaker 1: strong un economics and happy customers and users and, partners
- 23:04Speaker 1: and you, know we'd moved to this credit system and
- 23:07Speaker 1: it was really working with these machine learning algorithms that
- 23:09Speaker 1: automatically optimize revenue for these studios and Gym so the
- 23:13Speaker 1: model was finally like really, humming and because of, that
- 23:17Speaker 1: we were able to. Raise and if we hadn't been
- 23:19Speaker 1: able to, raise we might have been in trouble because
- 23:21Speaker 1: we thought the pandemic would Be we had a three
- 23:23Speaker 1: month scenario and a six month, scenario and we thought
- 23:26Speaker 1: we were being responsible by planning for the six month,
- 23:29Speaker 1: scenario and you, know it's ended up being that the
- 23:32Speaker 1: industry is still recovering from you, know we lost thirty
- 23:34Speaker 1: percent of fitness studios In america as an, industry and
- 23:38Speaker 1: twenty five percent of all fitness businesses less so. INTERNATIONAL
- 23:42Speaker 1: i think international governments did a better job supporting the fitness.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Industry but you, know that was a huge supply shock
- 23:49Speaker 1: that really set this industry back to kind of twenty
- 23:52Speaker 1: nineteen levels of businesses and customers and consumers in the.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Space so it set us. Back and THEN i think
- 23:59Speaker 1: the second THING i was lucky about was convincing those
- 24:02Speaker 1: investors who had just given us a quarter billion dollars
- 24:05Speaker 1: to let us shut our own revenue. Off so we
- 24:09Speaker 1: froze Class past memberships for everyone and, said look, a
- 24:13Speaker 1: we want to be on the right side of. History
- 24:15Speaker 1: if my daughter's asking me, Someday, dad how did you
- 24:17Speaker 1: run your virtual gym business during the, pandemic it's we
- 24:21Speaker 1: froze people's memberships and, said if you want to unfreeze
- 24:24Speaker 1: and use our video, workouts you, can but don't feel
- 24:27Speaker 1: obligated to go to a gym when it's not. Safe
- 24:29Speaker 1: AND i think that that led to some good goodwill
- 24:32Speaker 1: with customers and was good for our. Brand and, second
- 24:35Speaker 1: it saved people from. Churning if we were charging you
- 24:37Speaker 1: and you didn't weren't somebody who wanted to pay for video,
- 24:40Speaker 1: workouts you would have left and not given us a second.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Chance and so by taking the kind of long view
- 24:45Speaker 1: and having that investor support to take those, steps which
- 24:48Speaker 1: you know us proactively creatoring our revenue ninety five, percent
- 24:53Speaker 1: that was, tough but by doing that it really helped
- 24:56Speaker 1: us optimize for long term and come out of the,
- 24:57Speaker 1: pandemic you, know really, strong which is ALL ti what
- 25:00Speaker 1: led to our, combination you, know an acquisition of Mind,
- 25:03Speaker 1: body which Class bus is.
- 25:10Speaker 3: Taking a break from today's episode to give some love

- 27:53Speaker 3: many not only your, customers but then also the studios
- 27:56Speaker 3: associated with the platform really appreciated that approach for you
- 28:01Speaker 3: being such a successful business, leader you, know with varied
- 28:05Speaker 3: experience during this, time did individuals come to you seeking
- 28:10Speaker 3: advice or your input and what did you have to
- 28:13Speaker 3: offer them when a lot of, us you know myself for,
- 28:15Speaker 3: sure didn't have a lot of.
- 28:17Speaker 1: Optimism, yeah, certainly we were all trying to help each
- 28:22Speaker 1: other through, it AND i was in a more fortunate
- 28:25Speaker 1: place because we'd raised all this venture backed money right
- 28:28Speaker 1: and a lot of our businesses didn't have. That they
- 28:30Speaker 1: did have better. Access we didn't take government loans or
- 28:32Speaker 1: any stimulus or. Anything so we helped a lot of
- 28:34Speaker 1: them figure out that navigate. It we helped with investor,
- 28:38Speaker 1: Introductions we helped show signs, that you, know when the
- 28:42Speaker 1: restrictions would be, lifted people did flood back to the
- 28:45Speaker 1: gyms and. Studios Class pass users go back at one
- 28:49Speaker 1: hundred and ten percent pre pandemic rates BECAUSE i think
- 28:51Speaker 1: they're more tired of being boxed up and wanting to
- 28:54Speaker 1: emphasize their wellness. More and then we got involved with
- 28:57Speaker 1: a bunch of government lobbying, efforts and we did things
- 28:59Speaker 1: like way of dark commissions on video revenues we were
- 29:02Speaker 1: able to collect to try to keep as many of
- 29:04Speaker 1: the gyms and studios and business as we. Could, so you,
- 29:07Speaker 1: KNOW i think we really united as an. INDUSTRY i
- 29:09Speaker 1: think we learned a. LOT i think we have a
- 29:10Speaker 1: long way to go in terms of getting better at
- 29:12Speaker 1: things like government. LOBBYING i think we didn't do as
- 29:15Speaker 1: well In americas as we did in many of the
- 29:18Speaker 1: other countries That Class pass and Mind body operated around the, world.
- 29:22Speaker 3: Right, Right and, yeah one hundred and ten percent of
- 29:25Speaker 3: pre pandemic. Levels is that distribution different than maybe what
- 29:30Speaker 3: you saw. BEFORE i know you mentioned the addition of
- 29:33Speaker 3: a lot more you, know beauty and perhaps self care, services,
- 29:37Speaker 3: massage et.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Cetera so what's that distribution like these?
- 29:40Speaker 1: Days, yeah a lot of this spasalon stuff that people
- 29:43Speaker 1: do now in class past is sort of replacing lost fitness.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Businesses the second thing that changed is we saw a
- 29:50Speaker 1: lot more suburban migration and a lot less just office.
- 29:54Speaker 1: Commuting so you, know there's a lot of people who
- 29:58Speaker 1: are Living hoboken instead of community Into New York city every.
- 30:01Speaker 1: Day they stay In hoboken and so we've really had
- 30:03Speaker 1: to think about how we change our footprint of partner
- 30:07Speaker 1: businesses for Class pass or in the case of Mind,
- 30:10Speaker 1: body how do we really focus on businesses that are
- 30:12Speaker 1: where people live instead of just where people, work because
- 30:16Speaker 1: that's you, know where this industry kind of migrated.
- 30:18Speaker 3: To so, interesting you, know as a, podcaster WHEN i
- 30:21Speaker 3: lost the commuting crowd for a little, while it was
- 30:23Speaker 3: a scary, moment right because so many people typically would
- 30:27Speaker 3: spend that thirty forty five an hour in their car
- 30:30Speaker 3: listening to show and they no longer had that commitment
- 30:34Speaker 3: to the. Content SO i can totally relate on trying
- 30:37Speaker 3: to think, Like, okay how CAN i better serve my
- 30:40Speaker 3: community and what CAN i provide them that they're actually
- 30:43Speaker 3: seeking that meets.
- 30:44Speaker 2: Them with where they're. At absolutely totally, different totally.
- 30:49Speaker 3: Different so you did mention Mind body acquiring Class. Paths
- 30:54Speaker 3: talk to us about that transition and how your role.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Shifted Class pass was exploring going. PUBLIC i mean, this
- 31:00Speaker 1: there were. SPACs you, know every day tech companies are
- 31:03Speaker 1: going public and thank god we didn't decide to do.
- 31:06Speaker 1: That And Vista, equity who is one of the most,
- 31:09Speaker 1: prominent perhaps the most successful enterprise software private equity. Firms
- 31:14Speaker 1: in the last twenty, years they had bought Mind, body
- 31:16Speaker 1: which you, know was the Class pass is sort of
- 31:19Speaker 1: the industry's biggest aggregator of fitness. Experiences Mind body is
- 31:23Speaker 1: the BIGGEST SaaS, provider so really the sort of operating
- 31:27Speaker 1: system and business management software that a single location yoga
- 31:32Speaker 1: studio could run, on or a business as big as you,
- 31:34Speaker 1: KNOW f forty five Or Orange city can run. On
- 31:37Speaker 1: and so we kind of, said, hey you, know we'd.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Flirted we were. Partners Class pass was built on mind BODIES.
- 31:44Speaker 1: Api that's how we could put reservations into most of
- 31:47Speaker 1: our businesses, systems for, Example and so we had this
- 31:52Speaker 1: this friendly. Dynamic also it was you, know Mind body
- 31:56Speaker 1: had a consumer, app so is that. Competitive so we
- 31:59Speaker 1: had had this inteing dynamic for many years and, ultimately you,
- 32:03Speaker 1: know and talking to THE ceo of Mind, body who's
- 32:05Speaker 1: now on our board of directors and as a longtime
- 32:08Speaker 1: friend and mentor and business partner of, mine he recommended
- 32:12Speaker 1: we explore bringing the businesses, together and we. Did it was,
- 32:15Speaker 1: hard it ended. Up it was it was kind of
- 32:18Speaker 1: a tough call at the time because the public markets
- 32:20Speaker 1: were so, Hot so some of our investors were, like
- 32:22Speaker 1: maybe we should just go public and stay. Independent, ultimately
- 32:25Speaker 1: we believe the, better the better together story was just very.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Compelling Mind body now can guarantee that Class pass is
- 32:32Speaker 1: going to be good for a. Business if you're on mind,
- 32:34Speaker 1: body mind body, says use class pass fill your extra.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Capacity if it's harmful to your business and you actually
- 32:40Speaker 1: lose money from cannibalization or some other, fear mind body
- 32:44Speaker 1: will write you a check for double what you've. Lost
- 32:47Speaker 1: we couldn't do that as our own, company. Right so
- 32:49Speaker 1: having that weight of Mind, body having that proof point
- 32:52Speaker 1: of mind body and the balance sheet of, it as you,
- 32:55Speaker 1: know this twenty year old iconic business that sort of,
- 32:58Speaker 1: invented you know and really unlocked the studio fitness, trend
- 33:03Speaker 1: was incredibly valuable for Class. Pass my role did. SHIFT
- 33:06Speaker 1: i became instead of being THE ceo of the, COMPANY
- 33:09Speaker 1: i was the. President SO i became kind of the
- 33:11Speaker 1: number two and was running the consumer business for Mind
- 33:14Speaker 1: body and Class. Pass And, josh THE, ceo who is
- 33:19Speaker 1: this longtime mentor and, friend you, know he had set
- 33:21Speaker 1: me up as his eventual. Successor and after about a
- 33:24Speaker 1: year of working together and recognizing him as more of
- 33:29Speaker 1: a sales oriented, leader and he was taking board seats
- 33:32Speaker 1: and kind of looking for that next. Chapter and me
- 33:34Speaker 1: is really a tech geek and somebody who has spent
- 33:37Speaker 1: the last you, know twenty, years especially the last ten
- 33:40Speaker 1: years building cutting edge distributed systems and machine learning. Systems
- 33:44Speaker 1: that's what Mind body really needed right. Now and so
- 33:46Speaker 1: he asked me to step up and take the operating
- 33:48Speaker 1: reins and to make Mind body software indispensably valuable to you,
- 33:52Speaker 1: know all the businesses out there that are in the wellness.
- 33:54Speaker 3: Industry, montana how does a guy get to this point
- 34:01Speaker 3: where he gets to run a company from where he
- 34:03Speaker 3: wants to run a.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Company, yeah it's funny Because montana was an. Accident once
- 34:10Speaker 1: we had kind of fixed class pass and had it
- 34:12Speaker 1: working really, well we decided a board member prompted, us
- 34:16Speaker 1: said maybe you shouldn't be running it in the two
- 34:17Speaker 1: most expensive cities In, America New york AND. Sf and
- 34:21Speaker 1: his suggestion Was detroit didn't land as well with our executive,
- 34:25Speaker 1: team so we were going to Do Salt lake Or
- 34:26Speaker 1: denver kind of shared commuting pain mountain active lifestyle, communities
- 34:31Speaker 1: but we found that they had already been overrun by big.

- 34:36Speaker 1: And boulder And Salt Lake, city and real estate's gotten,

- 35:04Speaker 1: Workers they'd stay longer and got to live this amazing.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Lifestyle so we were lucky in that we were already
- 35:10Speaker 1: a distributed, company so we were used to zooming even BEFORE.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Covid we weren't a business that had to learn how
- 35:15Speaker 1: to virtually collaborate WITH. Covid and the same was true
- 35:19Speaker 1: with Mind. Body so Mind body was started In San, Luis.
- 35:21Speaker 1: Obispo THE ceo at the time was based In, scottsdale you,
- 35:25Speaker 1: know but we have offices In singapore And sydney And
- 35:27Speaker 1: london And New. York and so once we brought the businesses.

- 35:34Speaker 1: likes to go to the, Office i'm in the office
- 35:36Speaker 1: five days a. WEEK i like to have that separation
- 35:38Speaker 1: of church and. State And god, knows my wife doesn't
- 35:40Speaker 1: want me at home being on. Calls but even Though
- 35:44Speaker 1: i'm somebody who's like, that you, KNOW i try to
- 35:47Speaker 1: listen to my. Customer and my first customers are, employees
- 35:50Speaker 1: and people love the flexibility of being able to work
- 35:52Speaker 1: where they want to. Work and you, know we like
- 35:54Speaker 1: to think we have offices and spectacular places between the
- 35:57Speaker 1: beach And San Luis obispo and the Desert arizona and
- 36:00Speaker 1: the mountains In montana and the cities Like New york AND.
- 36:03Speaker 1: Sf but we let people kind of be where they
- 36:07Speaker 1: need to be to optimize for their wellness and where
- 36:09Speaker 1: they're the most.
- 36:09Speaker 3: PRODUCTIVE a lot of variety there overall picture of. Wellness
- 36:14Speaker 3: we've talked about. Fitness how do you take care of
- 36:17Speaker 3: you outside of moving your?
- 36:18Speaker 1: Body you, Know that's actually Something i've been working. On
- 36:23Speaker 1: so we do a lot of executive sponsored wellness challenges and.
- 36:26Speaker 1: Competitions we try to really live our, mission you, know
- 36:29Speaker 1: as a, company and one of the CHALLENGES i send
- 36:31Speaker 1: up for is to get into, meditation And i'll be,
- 36:34Speaker 1: HONEST i give myself A c. Minus i've done it
- 36:37Speaker 1: a few. TIMES i do it every now and, again
- 36:40Speaker 1: BUT i haven't really established it as a consistent and
- 36:45Speaker 1: critical part of my. Routine AND i feel LIKE i
- 36:47Speaker 1: have a lot of upside in doing. So my wife
- 36:49Speaker 1: has really started using it to fall, asleep and like
- 36:52Speaker 1: it's like sleeping better than she ever. Has so that's
- 36:54Speaker 1: something i've Been i've been working on but. Unsuccessfully the
- 36:57Speaker 1: two That i've gotten better. About one IS i found
- 37:01Speaker 1: your class past the most amazing messuits here In missoula
- 37:04Speaker 1: of all, places, Uh and it's like a medical healing,
- 37:09Speaker 1: experience you, Know AND i go AND i try to
- 37:10Speaker 1: get in there at least once a. Month and then
- 37:13Speaker 1: a former employee of ours who kind of fell in
- 37:16Speaker 1: love with this industry decided to go out on his,
- 37:18Speaker 1: own become an entrepreneur and opened a cryo place In,
- 37:21Speaker 1: missoula and So i've tried to add that to my
- 37:23Speaker 1: routine as. Well there's some good, medical uh you, know
- 37:26Speaker 1: longitudinal studies coming out about you, know temperature treatments and
- 37:30Speaker 1: hot cold and cryo specifically and, uh and So i've
- 37:34Speaker 1: tried to add that to my, routine especially you, know
- 37:36Speaker 1: dealing with. Injuries adding cryo and massage for my shoulder
- 37:41Speaker 1: injury has been a game.
- 37:42Speaker 3: Changer, Okay so we're working on self, care is what
- 37:45Speaker 3: you're trying to.
- 37:46Speaker 1: Say, yeah constantly working on, it constantly, evolving and you
- 37:51Speaker 1: know there's always, uh there's always more achievement.
- 37:53Speaker 3: To be had there, again super successful in. Business there's
- 37:56Speaker 3: no arguing. That i'm sure in the industry and. Beyond
- 38:00Speaker 3: and when people hear your, name they think of you
- 38:02Speaker 3: this way as someone that's behind this very large. Company
- 38:06Speaker 3: when you look in the, mirror what is it that
- 38:07Speaker 3: you see looking back at.
- 38:09Speaker 1: You, WELL i appreciate the. COMPLIMENTS i don't think most
- 38:14Speaker 1: people know WHO i, am and that's kind of HOW
- 38:16Speaker 1: i prefer. It SO i try to be. ANONYMOUS i
- 38:18Speaker 1: live in this little mountain, town you. Know my wife
- 38:20Speaker 1: AND i try to have our organizations that we give
- 38:22Speaker 1: to AND i try to help entrepreneurs build great. Companies
- 38:25Speaker 1: i'm proud of my business, success but you, know our
- 38:29Speaker 1: time here is, short and the things THAT i hope
- 38:32Speaker 1: to be remembered by is the quality of dad and
- 38:34Speaker 1: husband and friend and brother That i'm going to be
- 38:37Speaker 1: and maybe mentor at work. Too we spend we do
- 38:41Speaker 1: spend at the end of the, day most of our
- 38:42Speaker 1: time working or waking hours or working and so you
- 38:46Speaker 1: better find what you, love find an opportunity to learn
- 38:49Speaker 1: and get better every day and find joy in those
- 38:51Speaker 1: personal challenges and then people that you work. With and
- 38:55Speaker 1: that's really been a revelation for, me you, know moving
- 38:58Speaker 1: out of just tech to wellness tech Been. Hey you,
- 39:01Speaker 1: know we get to help, people try to help people live,
- 39:04Speaker 1: longer happier lives or you, know in the case of
- 39:06Speaker 1: class best directly activate them and motivate. Them, so you,
- 39:10Speaker 1: KNOW i try to find be somebody who finds meaning
- 39:12Speaker 1: in their work and levers my, impact you, know through
- 39:16Speaker 1: collaboration with.
- 39:17Speaker 2: Others, yeah you, know it's funny we have aligning mission.
- 39:20Speaker 3: Statements is that For, hurdle the goal with every episode
- 39:23Speaker 3: is to encourage others to live, healthier, happier more motivated
- 39:26Speaker 3: lives in whatever way that looks right to. Them, Right
- 39:28Speaker 3: so it's cool to be able to have this opportunity
- 39:31Speaker 3: to sit down with you and hear more about how
- 39:33Speaker 3: you guys are doing that and your journey to get
- 39:36Speaker 3: to this point now as we finish off final two,
- 39:39Speaker 3: questions first of, which when you think about your your
- 39:43Speaker 3: relatively new to this specific, role, right.
- 39:46Speaker 1: YEAH i think it's been about three. Months, yeah still,
- 39:48Speaker 1: new super.
- 39:49Speaker 3: New so in this last three month, period any advice
- 39:53Speaker 3: that someone's offered you on this new chapter that you'd
- 39:56Speaker 3: like to.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Share the, person give me the advice. Directly but one
- 39:59Speaker 1: of the the career Mantras i've picked up and now
- 40:01Speaker 1: is one of the mind body values is be so
- 40:03Speaker 1: good they can't ignore. You and that's advice That Steve
- 40:06Speaker 1: martin gave an aspiring comedian when the comedian, said, hey
- 40:10Speaker 1: how do you break? Through you, know everyone's always looking
- 40:12Speaker 1: for these, hacks these, shortcuts you, know these tips and,
- 40:17Speaker 1: tricks and, ultimately at the end of the, day like quality,
- 40:20Speaker 1: matters quality in your work and what you, do and
- 40:23Speaker 1: if you can raise the bar and produce something differentiated
- 40:26Speaker 1: and uniquely, great that'll shine. Through and so that's What
- 40:30Speaker 1: i've been focused. On it's just how DO i how
- 40:31Speaker 1: DO i try to achieve a higher level of performance
- 40:34Speaker 1: and a greater level of quality and EVERYTHING i, do
- 40:36Speaker 1: whether it's an, email a, slide a speech to the
- 40:39Speaker 1: company a. Podcast you, Know i'm SURE i have. Opportunities
- 40:43Speaker 1: i'll go kick myself about for how to improve next
- 40:45Speaker 1: time you have me on the. Show but, really you,
- 40:48Speaker 1: know be so great they can't ignore. You IS i
- 40:50Speaker 1: think a pretty.
- 40:50Speaker 3: Good piece of advice right, Now, fritz you have an
- 40:53Speaker 3: opportunity to offer yourself a piece of advice at the
- 40:56Speaker 3: very beginning of let's say the renaissance of your wellness,
- 40:59Speaker 3: journey when you realize that the buck bucket is empty
- 41:02Speaker 3: and you're ready to put in some work and put
- 41:04Speaker 3: some water in, there what do you tell, yourself knowing
- 41:08Speaker 3: what you?
- 41:08Speaker 1: Know, now that's a great. QUESTION i think the most
- 41:11Speaker 1: useful advice would be to get back on the horse
- 41:13Speaker 1: when you fall. OFF i tend to get really fired
- 41:17Speaker 1: up and insane and like my diet nutrition is, amazing
- 41:21Speaker 1: my workouts are. Great i'll do double. DAYS i get
- 41:25Speaker 1: a little too into, it, Right but THEN i also
- 41:28Speaker 1: completely fall. Off and IF i fall off because of an,
- 41:30Speaker 1: injury OR i have too many business trips or something
- 41:33Speaker 1: throws me, Off i'll fall, off and Then i'll get
- 41:36Speaker 1: into the spiral of disencouragement and the negative reinforcement. Loop
- 41:39Speaker 1: right the positive reinforcement loop is your nutrition is, good
- 41:43Speaker 1: your workouts are, good your workouts are, good your nutrition is,
- 41:45Speaker 1: good your sleep is. Better SO i think trying to
- 41:48Speaker 1: avoid those negative reinforcement loops and to understand that you're
- 41:51Speaker 1: going to fall off the wagon and that's okay to
- 41:53Speaker 1: show up and just show up to your, workout even
- 41:55Speaker 1: if you don't get the best, workout and just show
- 41:57Speaker 1: up and start pushing that snowball back down hill and
- 42:00Speaker 1: get that positive reinforcement of going.
- 42:01Speaker 3: Again, yeah grace is so important and knowing that literally
- 42:05Speaker 3: every single second is an opportunity to start fresh is
- 42:07Speaker 3: integral to the positive loop moving. Forward so grateful that
- 42:11Speaker 3: we were able to connect for today's. Episode fritz tell,
- 42:14Speaker 3: us how do the hurdlers either follow along with you
- 42:17Speaker 3: or follow along with Mind?
- 42:18Speaker 2: Body give us the, Info.
- 42:21Speaker 1: So Mind body and class. Pass you know on the,
- 42:24Speaker 1: Socials instagram is probably the most fun. Place and then for,
- 42:28Speaker 1: ME i write posts On twitter And LinkedIn on, occasion
- 42:32Speaker 1: but you know those aren't necessarily endorsed by the, company
- 42:34Speaker 1: so my comms team would probably you, Know i'll have
- 42:37Speaker 1: to add a caveat to My twitter.
- 42:38Speaker 2: Handle these are my personal views only.
- 42:41Speaker 1: EXACTLY i get.
- 42:42Speaker 3: It every TIME i talk to A ceo, literally they
- 42:45Speaker 3: say the exact same.
- 42:46Speaker 2: Thing they're, Like i'm not really big On, instagram but
- 42:47Speaker 2: you can find me On.
- 42:49Speaker 1: Twitter, yeah, YEAH i, LIKE i Like. Insta i'm Just
- 42:52Speaker 1: i'm not that, interesting you. Know, Yeah i'm getting good
- 42:55Speaker 1: at my nutrition and. Workouts it gets kind of boring and, repetitive.
- 42:58Speaker 2: So oh, Man well, again thank you so much for your.
- 43:01Speaker 3: Time i'm over At Emily body and At Hurdle podcast
- 43:04Speaker 3: Another hurdle.
