- 0:01Hey, it's that car show and welcome to a bonus episode.
- 0:05And what a bonus it is, because it's not every day I get to sit
- 0:09down or at least stand next to the chief marketing and sales
- 0:13officer of Lamborghini. Federico Foschini is not only
- 0:17the most Italian man I've ever met, but he heads Polo Storica
- 0:22and Lamborghini as well, which is their highly.
- 0:24Regarded Heritage division. Thank you Jordan Russell at
- 0:28Extension PR for connecting us. A quick heads up that we
- 0:31recorded this in the middle of 60 Lamborghini Muras and their
- 0:35owners and admirers at Pebble Beach this past Sunday.
- 0:38So there is a bit of background noise.
- 0:40That said, I bet you didn't see this one coming.
- 0:43Neither did I. So enjoy.
- 0:44It's 12 minutes with Lamborghinis Federico Foschini
- 0:48and it's that car show. Hey, it's Ryan Barky from that
- 0:53car show and I'm thrilled to be sitting down today with Federico
- 0:57Foschini, the Chief Marketing and Sales Officer and Head of
- 1:00Polo Storico at Lamborghini live from the Pebble Beach Concorde.
- 1:04Federico, you've been with Lamborghini for I think almost 3
- 1:07decades, Yes? Through the cases a lot.
- 1:09That's an achievement, especially in this.
- 1:11Is an achievement. It's also a sign that I'm
- 1:13getting gold, but it's fine. But we all are right.
- 1:16One thing we can't do anything about.
- 1:17We cannot stop. That's.
- 1:19If we stop is not a good science.
- 1:21That's right. That's the worst side, right?
- 1:24The 30 years you've spent with Lamborghini in near 30 years.
- 1:26What do you think Lamborghini understands about its customers
- 1:29now that maybe you didn't 10 or 20 years ago?
- 1:31Well. I think that we learn a lot in
- 1:34that moment in time at the beginning because the customer
- 1:37base was much smaller. So we have a direct contact and
- 1:40what we learn at the time is that we need to keep the
- 1:43customer contact direct contact and is what we are trying even
- 1:47if it's more difficult now to make also with a complete
- 1:50different size. So when I entered Lamborghini we
- 1:53were 200 employee and 200 car produced every year.
- 1:56Now we are between 11 thousand 10,000 and 11,000 car per year
- 2:01and we are almost 3 thousand 3500 people with Lamborghini.
- 2:05So for sure, the size change, the, the dimension change, but
- 2:08what we, we keep as a, let's say, a basic way to behave and
- 2:14this part of our DNA is to stay close to listen to the class and
- 2:17to speak with them and to be involved with this gathering.
- 2:20That is for sure something that is surprising me after 20 years
- 2:24to see all this mural together. But it's also the way to get in
- 2:28touch with the people that maybe we're buying this car in all
- 2:32times. And now they're preserving the
- 2:34car in a very good way. And today we have this
- 2:36incredible, you say, sight that we can see and this kind of it
- 2:41is impressive. It really is.
- 2:43It's such a thing to see. Just to be here in the middle of
- 2:45the mall, it's really incredible.
- 2:46It's surreal. So you touched on this a little
- 2:48bit, but Lamborghini has managed to grow substantially, well,
- 2:51still feeling exclusive, right? And I think that's a key thing.
- 2:54So what do you think the line is between growing the business and
- 2:58diluting the brand? That that's that's the magic.
- 3:01That is what you have to percept.
- 3:02I think that depending on the segment that you are playing as
- 3:05there is a number of car that you have to produce and that you
- 3:09can produce without diluting the brand.
- 3:11Another point is that to be always new in the offer and
- 3:14renovate your offer constantly in order to keep interest and
- 3:19excite the customer and drive them along with the Lamborghini
- 3:23history. But it's clear this is something
- 3:25that is very difficult. We try always to do this.
- 3:28Our growth is very, it is smooth, it's continuous, but
- 3:31smooth. We never exaggerate, we never
- 3:33inflate the market. We have a distribution around
- 3:35the world that is very much balanced and it's creating a
- 3:39moment like this where everything is durable and market
- 3:42are opening and closing due to geopolitical situation.
- 3:44Russia all Middle East important market for us.
- 3:49And after you have to be able to rebalance and this is something
- 3:52that we can do because we are always very conservative in
- 3:55distributing car. But this is the name of the game
- 3:58and is reflected after on the value of the pre owned car on
- 4:02the market. So this is one of the barometer
- 4:04that you need always to consider and to keep an eye on in order
- 4:09to understand if what you are doing is not diluting the brand.
- 4:12And one of the 1st signal is in case the price of the pre owned
- 4:17car on the market. This is interesting for
- 4:19collector and for repeat buyer is very important because.
- 4:23Yeah, it's interesting. And of course, you know it's now
- 4:252026 and electrification has really come to the picture.
- 4:29If I'm correct, you have described electrification as a
- 4:31way to increase driver emotion, right, rather than compromise
- 4:35it. So what surprised you most?
- 4:36Just about how the traditional Lamborghini customers have
- 4:39embraced or responded to this transition to electrification.
- 4:42I think that as you mentioned in a proper way and we create an
- 4:47acronymous that is HPAV instead of PHV that is high performance
- 4:51electrified vehicle. This is how we call our, let's
- 4:55say, pass to the electrification having hybridization of the
- 4:59three model. Because we think that first of
- 5:01all, this kind of transition, technological transition is all
- 5:05aimed or not only aimed to reduce the emission and to
- 5:08comply with the legislation, but mainly to increase not only the
- 5:12performance. Because we are increasing the
- 5:14power, we are increasing the torque, but also the level of
- 5:18control that you can give to your customer.
- 5:20And to drive a car of over 1000 horsepower in the past was
- 5:25almost impossible. Now with what we are having in
- 5:28terms of technology with the with three electric engines, the
- 5:31battery is the V12 is keeping on one side the motion of the V12,
- 5:35but on the other side for example is giving you a lot of
- 5:38opportunity to discharge and to be able to have an easy driver
- 5:41even if you are not a professional driver, but to feel
- 5:44like a pilot while you are driving car of a such power.
- 5:48So, and this is something that has been understood by our
- 5:50customer because it's not just something that is diluting the
- 5:55DNA, but is even announcing the DNA.
- 5:58And our DNA is based on social design, futuristic design, but
- 6:02performance and driving emotions.
- 6:04How is that affected the way you market the cars?
- 6:08At the end of the day, so we are always try to explain in a
- 6:12sincere and transparent way what the car is about.
- 6:15The mission is clear. These are dream car that we are
- 6:18creating in order to let's say feed the need of, as I told you,
- 6:24emotional design and emotional driving.
- 6:27It's all about emotion. And this is the way that we are
- 6:30trying to communicate on also when we are explaining the
- 6:32technology because we have an incredible high level of
- 6:35innovation and technological innovation.
- 6:37But what is important for the customer is not the pure number
- 6:41of the pure information is how this is translated in customer
- 6:44experience. And customer experience is all
- 6:46about emotional. Your masters at that it's it's
- 6:49fun to watch. So ad personum with ad personum,
- 6:53the vast majority of your cars know leave the factory with some
- 6:56level of personalization. Do you see personalization
- 7:00primarily as a revenue opportunity?
- 7:02A customer experience tool? Increasingly a part of your
- 7:05Lamborghini brand identity? I think the first thing is that
- 7:08every one of these customer, especially the highest you get
- 7:13in term of the value of the car and the reduced volume that you
- 7:17are you are delivering. They want to have their own
- 7:19product. And the good thing is not they,
- 7:22they're not only empty just about the personalization, the
- 7:24personalization itself, but what should we speak with the
- 7:28customer during a configuration session that can last 3-4 hours
- 7:33at least The first one, something that they enjoy the
- 7:36experience itself, the experience to be part of the
- 7:38creation of their own card. It comes when they have to
- 7:41select the color, but also when there's the interior, the
- 7:44combination. Maybe they can suggest color
- 7:46that are not existing and you have to create for them.
- 7:48And this is something that is something that is part of the
- 7:52process of being an owner of a dream car like Lamborghini dream
- 7:55car. And this is something that we
- 7:58are announcing not only in terms of offer increase, but also in
- 8:02terms of touchpoint that we can offer for the customer to stay
- 8:05close also to the Lamborghini team, not only to the dealer,
- 8:08but also to the Lamborghini team to exploit the maximum
- 8:11opportunity. For example, here in the villa
- 8:14that we have in People Beach, we have two configuration room and
- 8:17there are people that are sitting continuously with our
- 8:19expert together with the dealer in order to set up their
- 8:22configuration and to create also some configuration that even not
- 8:25existence. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's
- 8:27fantastic. So you think there's an aspect
- 8:29of Lamborghini's heritage that the company could be doing more
- 8:32with? I think that we can always do
- 8:34better and this is one of the assets that is moving as always
- 8:38to try to improve. But for sure we grow a lot in
- 8:41the sense starting with the Polo Historical creation in the 2015
- 8:44Polo Historical is the department that is owning the
- 8:47archive of the historical car, is doing the certification and
- 8:52is doing the restoration. It's clear that is a word that
- 8:55require a lot of effort, but it's something that we believe a
- 8:59lot because it's the way to on one side preserve the history of
- 9:02Lamborghini that is the base and the fundament of the future of
- 9:06Lamborghini. Because if you are here because
- 9:08we are the newer in the past as they couldn't touch.
- 9:10And if the brand is here, it's because this car became economy.
- 9:13But also to stay in touch with this customer that deserve to
- 9:16have someone that they can refer to and can be only Lamborghini
- 9:20in order to get the car preserved and certified in a
- 9:25proper way, right, Right. Right.
- 9:27You've spent so much of your career with Lamborghini.
- 9:29Is there something about the brand that still excites you
- 9:31that maybe we don't know about? I have.
- 9:34To say so is the capability to be always unexpected.
- 9:38It is one of our value together with let's say brave and
- 9:42authentic. But I'm honest today when I came
- 9:45here and they see all this career with all this color
- 9:49combination, one different from the other thinking it is almost
- 9:52the 10% of the overall production of the newer in the
- 9:56livestock after 60 year and only year in America because a lot of
- 10:00car went out of America. So not so for me, something that
- 10:04is creating me an incredible emotion and an incredible
- 10:07proudness of the impact of this of this brand.
- 10:10So today I'm really feeling a lot of emotion that is not
- 10:13normal because after 26 years, I'm used to have things that are
- 10:18out of the ordinary. Because every day that I'm going
- 10:21from the office to another department, I'm looking
- 10:25incredible car and incredible technology.
- 10:29But when I see something like this, really I'm a little bit.
- 10:33So I'm very surprised, let's say.
- 10:36Yeah, just the passion that's here.
- 10:38It's just evidence. I mean, people are really into
- 10:40the brand. People that maybe because
- 10:42they're keeping this car always in shape are carpet for sure,
- 10:46are very delicate to be maintained.
- 10:48So it's something that is incredible.
- 10:50You need passion. You need passion, Yeah.
- 10:52Absolutely. Also because a lot of these
- 10:54people were going on investing in this car where maybe also the
- 10:59value of this car was not so strong as this today.
- 11:02And because they believe in the brand and they understood that
- 11:04this was that this car were iconic and they understood the
- 11:08value of this car also for themselves also for personal
- 11:11reward, not only for eventually resides the car.
- 11:14And these are all loyal customers.
- 11:16And would you say this is the most iconic Lamborghini ever?
- 11:19I have to say that in the mindset of everybody is the most
- 11:22iconic Lamborghini ever after I have to say that I am a guy of
- 11:25the 70s, or at least I was born in the. 72.
- 11:29So I am a boomer so and I was growing with the Kunta and for
- 11:33me the Kunta was something that was really the spaceship and the
- 11:36dream car. But in the mindset of everybody,
- 11:39this is the starting point of the Lamborghini story.
- 11:41Even if it was not the first car, but it was the car that
- 11:44brought the Lamborghini brand on another dimension.
- 11:46To inspire new models today. Yeah.
- 11:49And we decided also this year also this time for the 6th
- 11:53anniversary to celebrate with the contemporary ritual that is
- 11:57another spaceship that is the Rewalto.
- 11:59And we created 99 car already sold out for specific customer
- 12:04that will use the color combinations, the different
- 12:07color combinations, the Euro to trim to the mural to trim their
- 12:11own car with specific logo and and the specific logo dedicated
- 12:15to the mural and the 16. US, that's pretty fantastic.
- 12:18Well, I want to be respectful of your time.
- 12:19Federico Foschini, Head of Marketing and Polestorco at UH,
- 12:24Lamborghini, thank you so much, Sir.
- 12:26Thank you for joining us on that car show.
- 12:27Cheers.
