- 0:06Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to No Dribble, their global home of
- 0:09Speaker 1: people wandering in the wilderness of a weekend with only
- 0:12Speaker 1: two games of netball. And I'm Carolyn Swindell, and I'll
- 0:17Speaker 1: tell you what. Some people, even within this podcast team
- 0:21Speaker 1: are wandering in the wilderness somewhere because I've walked into
- 0:23Speaker 1: the studio this morning. I'm all on my lonesome, and
- 0:27Speaker 1: thank God from the far West we have our very
- 0:29Speaker 1: dear friend Sue Gordian or else I'm beaking on my own.
- 0:32Speaker 2: I know I'm tagging in for a third week because
- 0:35Speaker 2: a couple of key figures, Carolyn, have decided to be
- 0:39Speaker 2: in the air. I think one of them is in
- 0:40Speaker 2: the air as we speak, Captain Cox, heading back from
- 0:43Speaker 2: the west.
- 0:44Speaker 1: And the other one's heading over to the west apparently.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Oh yes, and she's heading over here to speak at
- 0:48Speaker 2: a function.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Yes, they might pass in the air, who knows, but
- 0:51Speaker 1: you and I are here. And what a weekend?
- 0:53Speaker 2: Yeah, epic, What a Sunday, super Sunday of finals netball? Crazy,
- 0:58Speaker 2: wasn't it? Like?
- 1:00Speaker 1: It could not have been two more different games? Could they?
- 1:04Speaker 2: No? And you never know what's going to happen in finals,
- 1:07Speaker 2: and everyone dearly loves close finals, even us as commentators,
- 1:10Speaker 2: because they're epic to call. But of course one of
- 1:13Speaker 2: them being the Fever Swiss one yesterday was far from that,
- 1:16Speaker 2: and I'm sure we'll get into the depth of that
- 1:18Speaker 2: in just a moment. But yeah, everyone kind of knows
- 1:21Speaker 2: my affiliation to the Fever. So it's been it was
- 1:24Speaker 2: a I slept well last night, which was good night.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I bet you did. Yeah, Well, everybody knows my allegiance
- 1:30Speaker 1: to the Swifts, and I've got all my merch on
- 1:32Speaker 1: today because it was the rough day yesterday to be
- 1:34Speaker 1: a fan of the Swifts. But hell, it can't be
- 1:37Speaker 1: anywhere near as hard on me as it is on
- 1:40Speaker 1: those women who were out there on the court. And
- 1:43Speaker 1: this is the time if you're a fan, this is
- 1:45Speaker 1: not the time to walk away. This is the time
- 1:46Speaker 1: to lean in. This is the time to say, look,
- 1:48Speaker 1: we're in a bit of a crisis, but I believe
- 1:50Speaker 1: in you. Yes, very important, even if I'm not sure
- 1:53Speaker 1: I do.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Yeah, although I did read a bit of social media
- 1:56Speaker 2: last night when I got into bed. Occasionally I flicked
- 1:58Speaker 2: through and there was that's a mistake. Yeah, that's a mistake. Well,
- 2:01Speaker 2: it is when they just come at you for being
- 2:02Speaker 2: a bias commentator. But you get a bit over that
- 2:04Speaker 2: after a while. But the Swiss fans were a little brutal,
- 2:08Speaker 2: weren't they, And like, don't get me wrong, you can
- 2:10Speaker 2: get upset about your team not performing, but I'm with you,
- 2:13Speaker 2: like you just got to get behind them and give
- 2:14Speaker 2: them like they made finals, like it is, Oh, I
- 2:18Speaker 2: can't even begin to tell you how bloody hard it
- 2:22Speaker 2: is to make finals in the best league in the world.
- 2:25Speaker 2: And so it's like you take that every day of
- 2:27Speaker 2: the week, Carolyn, Like that's such a privilege, and yes,
- 2:30Speaker 2: you want to perform. And the great beauty for the
- 2:32Speaker 2: Swiss is they get another crack at the cherry. Like
- 2:34Speaker 2: you know, the Thunderbirds were celebrating their season last night
- 2:38Speaker 2: in a sad fashion, but the Swiss get to go
- 2:39Speaker 2: home and play again.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Yeah, And the reason that they do that is because
- 2:43Speaker 1: they were so good early in the season and it's
- 2:44Speaker 1: still the same people buy and lunch taking the court.
- 2:47Speaker 1: So it's like we can't just go started to fall
- 2:50Speaker 1: apart over the last couple of weeks. I'm out. But
- 2:53Speaker 1: you know, all credit to Fever. Every single player on
- 2:57Speaker 1: that team had an absolute blind.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Yeah they did. I've got to I'll tell you a
- 3:02Speaker 2: little story I thought. I thought so after the game yesterday,
- 3:05Speaker 2: as you know, I'm in my commentary mode and then
- 3:07Speaker 2: we had to let us through Pivot Live from Perth Last,
- 3:12Speaker 2: which was great. Exhausted though, Yeah, I was laughing at
- 3:17Speaker 2: the end when we were sort of going through the
- 3:18Speaker 2: last segment, Stacy Francis Bayman was stumbling over her words.
- 3:21Speaker 2: I was like, I had to click in my neck,
- 3:24Speaker 2: you know, like Kat was I think CAV called me
- 3:26Speaker 2: Sue Gordon or something like that. Like it was just
- 3:28Speaker 2: it was going all a bit pair shape because it
- 3:30Speaker 2: was a long day, but which was all really cool.
- 3:33Speaker 2: And then the game sort of finished, and you know,
- 3:36Speaker 2: I have to stay really focused onto what my job
- 3:39Speaker 2: is on the day, and so I was just in
- 3:41Speaker 2: commentator mode and I went back to the change room
- 3:43Speaker 2: and I sort of got undressed and put my gear on,
- 3:45Speaker 2: and then I went home. And I got home and
- 3:48Speaker 2: I sort of sitting there and I might watch the
- 3:51Speaker 2: game back. And I watched the game back and then
- 3:53Speaker 2: I was like, I think I'll go to bed, and
- 3:55Speaker 2: I went to bed and I woke up at about
- 3:56Speaker 2: three o'clock in the morning and I didn't feel I
- 4:00Speaker 2: didn't really feel anything. It was quite bizarre. And then
- 4:03Speaker 2: I got up this morning at about seven am and
- 4:05Speaker 2: I thought, right, I'm going to go for a walk.
- 4:06Speaker 2: And I went for a walk. And I got about
- 4:09Speaker 2: three quarters of the way through my walk, and you know,
- 4:11Speaker 2: like this is a bit embarrassing, I just burst into tears.
- 4:14Speaker 2: It hit me, like it just hit me. And I
- 4:16Speaker 2: was on my own and I was just walking and
- 4:19Speaker 2: this lady's coming towards me, and I was just streaming
- 4:22Speaker 2: with tears because I think it just hit me that, like,
- 4:25Speaker 2: you know, you make a Grand final. The club's made
- 4:26Speaker 2: a Grand final. It's everything I've kind of dreamt of.
- 4:29Speaker 1: And after last year's heartbreak.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Yep, and the year before to preliminary finals with the
- 4:34Speaker 2: one goal. Anyhow, But the funny part of this was
- 4:36Speaker 2: that I had got a couple of tickets for my
- 4:38Speaker 2: next door neighbor. And as I was walking towards my house,
- 4:43Speaker 2: as I was getting home, she was about three hundred
- 4:45Speaker 2: meters and I just heard her scream out so and
- 4:48Speaker 2: she's this lovely Gloria Attelian lady, just a ripper, and
- 4:52Speaker 2: she came running down the street. She was so excited
- 4:55Speaker 2: and she wrapped her hands around me and she was like, oh,
- 4:58Speaker 2: I'm so happy for you that it's just an MVT
- 5:01Speaker 2: performance and I was like, I was like, I have
- 5:05Speaker 2: to quickly get my head around that. But she said
- 5:08Speaker 2: it was hard for Fever yesterday to pick an MVP
- 5:11Speaker 2: because it was just the most valuable team.
- 5:12Speaker 1: They were just elite, weren't they Everyone did their job.
- 5:17Speaker 1: And I love listening to Dan Ryan. I think it
- 5:19Speaker 1: was at halftime and it's like, look, we could stop
- 5:21Speaker 1: this game now, really, and he was just saying, I
- 5:23Speaker 1: just want you to focus on skills, and it's like
- 5:26Speaker 1: that's really good that It's like, listen, don't think this
- 5:28Speaker 1: job is not done because we now have yep, we're
- 5:32Speaker 1: probably going to win this. We need to make sure
- 5:34Speaker 1: that we do. But let's use this opportunity as our
- 5:38Speaker 1: last really hard hit out before the Grand Final. So
- 5:41Speaker 1: I just it was really good and I'm sorry you're
- 5:43Speaker 1: embarrassed sharing that with us that you were crying, but
- 5:45Speaker 1: it's a great insight for us as to how stressful
- 5:49Speaker 1: it is in the clubs and for how much everyone
- 5:53Speaker 1: really wants this and works towards this, and yeah, so
- 5:56Speaker 1: if anyone's seeing the Swifts don't care. The Swifts care
- 5:59Speaker 1: so much and they care about what you're saying about them,
- 6:01Speaker 1: and yeah, and now is the time that we lean in.
- 6:05Speaker 1: And the Thunderbirds fans, they care enormously, and the Thunderbirds players,
- 6:09Speaker 1: like I looked at the press conference afterwards, and I
- 6:11Speaker 1: thought Georgie had probably dried her eyes before she'd gone
- 6:14Speaker 1: out there, like, yeah, a terrible, terrible disappointment for them.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Sports an emotional rollercoaster. But it's at any level, right,
- 6:20Speaker 2: It doesn't matter whether you're a parent on the side,
- 6:22Speaker 2: you know, at your grassroots netball, or whether you're a
- 6:25Speaker 2: full time professional athlete trying to win a premiership. And
- 6:28Speaker 2: it's funny because when I was out walking, I went
- 6:31Speaker 2: and grabbed it. I don't drink coffee. It was a
- 6:33Speaker 2: hot chocolate and I was sort of sitting there and
- 6:35Speaker 2: again just pondering through my head, and this lady's up
- 6:38Speaker 2: at the counter and she's ordering a coffee and oh god,
- 6:41Speaker 2: she was just going on about crap, like honestly, go yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 6:44Speaker 2: you know, like one hundred miles an hour. But she
- 6:47Speaker 2: was so excited about her life and her world and
- 6:49Speaker 2: it just sort of made me sit there and go,
- 6:50Speaker 2: you know, no one has any idea what is going
- 6:54Speaker 2: on in my world right now, but to me it
- 6:58Speaker 2: is just so significant. But you know, you just have
- 7:01Speaker 2: to live in your own joy of the of the
- 7:03Speaker 2: realms of the work that you work in. And you know,
- 7:05Speaker 2: like you go and talk to someone in AFL or
- 7:07Speaker 2: RL and they'm like, oh, what's nipple? I don't care,
- 7:09Speaker 2: But for us it means everything, and for the players
- 7:12Speaker 2: it means the world. And you're right, like this heartbreak
- 7:15Speaker 2: I felt for the Odelaide Thunderbirds yesterday they've had. I mean,
- 7:18Speaker 2: you know, you can't forget their season. No Shamir is
- 7:21Speaker 2: selling Humphy. How good have they been without her? Right?
- 7:23Speaker 1: And you've done it so well?
- 7:25Speaker 2: Yeah? Insane? So yeah it is. It's an emotional rollercoaster, Carolyn.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Finals and well every game is, but once you get
- 7:31Speaker 2: to finals it's stressful.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Well, as we speak, the tickets are on sale for
- 7:38Speaker 1: Sunday's games, so I've got people tasked inside with I
- 7:43Speaker 1: don't mean on the inside of the club, I mean
- 7:45Speaker 1: inside my house who are having to get my tickets
- 7:47Speaker 1: sorted for me for next week?
- 7:49Speaker 2: Cutoff Bank Arena.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, So Netball Australia takes out of the ticketing
- 7:55Speaker 1: for the finals, doesn't it.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Yeah, they do so basically all of the home and
- 7:59Speaker 2: away season is run by the clubs and that's at
- 8:02Speaker 2: the cost the expense of the clubs as well as
- 8:07Speaker 2: you know, any money that you make, et cetera. But
- 8:09Speaker 2: the finals is ownership of Netball Australia. However, the first
- 8:15Speaker 2: couple of semis, because you know, Fever round the game yesterday,
- 8:19Speaker 2: Thunderbirds round the game yesterday, Nipple Australia still take all
- 8:22Speaker 2: of like you know, the funds pretty much go to them.
- 8:24Speaker 2: They pay for elements of the sports presentation, but fundamentally
- 8:28Speaker 2: it's their pocket. But you know, the clubs still run
- 8:30Speaker 2: a home game environment, so it's an interesting one. But
- 8:33Speaker 2: then come Grand Final dates to neutral. It's a neutral game,
- 8:36Speaker 2: full Netball Australia staff for everything.
- 8:39Speaker 1: So do the clubs get a financial drink out of
- 8:42Speaker 1: these semi finals? Is there any No?
- 8:45Speaker 2: So, and listen, to be honest with you, it's I
- 8:48Speaker 2: don't have I actually don't have a problem with it, right,
- 8:50Speaker 2: So Nipple Astraia have to own something. I mean, the
- 8:53Speaker 2: league's there is and the home and away season is
- 8:56Speaker 2: rightful for the clubs and it is their asset and
- 8:59Speaker 2: they don't have a lot of assets, so they've got
- 9:01Speaker 2: to make sure that they make the most of it.
- 9:02Speaker 2: I just think the difficult parties is that clubs are
- 9:05Speaker 2: still expected to put on the show, you know, and
- 9:09Speaker 2: so for Fever as you know, it's a big game
- 9:11Speaker 2: day experience. It requires a lot of staff. So at
- 9:14Speaker 2: the end of the day, I'd love to see a
- 9:16Speaker 2: sort of a bit of an opportunity to do a
- 9:18Speaker 2: bit of a I don't know, like a bit of
- 9:20Speaker 2: a percentage share. It doesn't have to be a lot,
- 9:22Speaker 2: but just to reward clubs for putting on those semis
- 9:25Speaker 2: and then you know, Niple Australia pretty much run the show,
- 9:27Speaker 2: come come the Grand Final. So it's an interesting one.
- 9:30Speaker 2: I think clubs are sort of trying to have their
- 9:32Speaker 2: discussions with the league around it, and it's like again
- 9:36Speaker 2: it's I can see it depends whose seat you're sitting in, right,
- 9:40Speaker 2: So like you know, if you're in Clubland, of course
- 9:42Speaker 2: you want a piece of the pie, and if you
- 9:43Speaker 2: Nipple Australia you want to take whatever dollar you can
- 9:45Speaker 2: when the asset's yours.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I can totally see both sides of that. I
- 9:51Speaker 1: guess the clubs are the ones who have to wear
- 9:53Speaker 1: the complaints from the members, don't they that It's like, well,
- 9:56Speaker 1: why aren't I in my seats and whatever? And obviously
- 9:58Speaker 1: we're going to cute us rather than and playing it
- 10:01Speaker 1: at KRA, So I shouldn't expect to be in my
- 10:04Speaker 1: same seats. But I think it's a reasonable expectation for
- 10:06Speaker 1: members that, well, do.
- 10:07Speaker 2: You like that? So let's say it was a KR
- 10:09Speaker 2: and you're a mad Swiss fan, do you want to
- 10:12Speaker 2: sit in your exactly the same seat in the final?
- 10:14Speaker 2: Is that the most like? Is that?
- 10:16Speaker 1: So I don't keep my seats like I don't have
- 10:18Speaker 1: the bottom level membership, but I also don't have the
- 10:20Speaker 1: top one. I like where my seats are, you know,
- 10:22Speaker 1: a couple of years in a row. Now, I've been
- 10:24Speaker 1: near other people who I know I recognize them and
- 10:26Speaker 1: things like that. I'd like it. Do I think it's critical? No,
- 10:30Speaker 1: But you know, I do think that it is something
- 10:33Speaker 1: that the club has to manage because there are a
- 10:35Speaker 1: lot of people who have expectations of things in life
- 10:39Speaker 1: that I think maybe they shouldn't have that expectation, and
- 10:41Speaker 1: then they still choose to escalate it as a complaint.
- 10:44Speaker 1: So so whether or not it's a reasonable expectation, the
- 10:47Speaker 1: clubs have to deal with it, don't they.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Yeah, this is true, This is true. Yeah, Finals is
- 10:51Speaker 2: an interesting time for a lot of people. And you know,
- 10:54Speaker 2: like you know, you know what I want to say though,
- 10:57Speaker 2: and I Reckon Coxy brought this up perfectly in commentary yesterday.
- 11:01Speaker 2: We're just reminded very quickly yesterday that Sun Corps Supernepple
- 11:05Speaker 2: is the world's best league, Like, honestly, it's you know,
- 11:10Speaker 2: Grace Wecky is a great example someone that came across
- 11:12Speaker 2: the ditch, and you know, she came here because she
- 11:15Speaker 2: wanted to be challenged. And if she didn't get her
- 11:18Speaker 2: greatest lesson yesterday, which I think, you know, because I'm
- 11:22Speaker 2: a big fan of hers as a player, and I'm
- 11:25Speaker 2: a big fan that she needs. She's got a lot
- 11:27Speaker 2: of growth in her game and she'll she'll come away
- 11:29Speaker 2: from yesterday and don't tell me she won't be the better.
- 11:32Speaker 1: For her Absolutely.
- 11:33Speaker 2: If that doesn't light the fire in your belly, I
- 11:36Speaker 2: don't know what does.
- 11:37Speaker 1: And I'm looking at you. It's so interesting because she's
- 11:40Speaker 1: very young, but she's had an enormous amount of experience, hasn't.
- 11:43Speaker 1: She's like seven years in and she's twenty three years old,
- 11:46Speaker 1: but she is still very young. And I think, you know,
- 11:47Speaker 1: it's actually been a few people who have contacted me
- 11:49Speaker 1: to say she's probably still two or three years away
- 11:52Speaker 1: from her best. I think we are seeing some of
- 11:55Speaker 1: the youth in spite of all the experience that she has,
- 11:57Speaker 1: that they're still You can't put an old head on
- 11:59Speaker 1: young shoulders. But you can do is go here, go
- 12:01Speaker 1: into the bloody cauldron and see what that does to you.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, pressure, pressure does amazing things to most,
- 12:07Speaker 2: but experience, usually experience is what allows you to manage
- 12:12Speaker 2: pressure better than most. So and she doesn't have that,
- 12:15Speaker 2: like she doesn't you know, when I was experienced, like
- 12:17Speaker 2: she might have played seven years. She hasn't played seven years,
- 12:19Speaker 2: Like right up there at the top, Like, let's not
- 12:21Speaker 2: forget she was injured in the last World Cup, so
- 12:24Speaker 2: she didn't get a chance, and you know, all eyes
- 12:26Speaker 2: were on New Zealand in South Africa, and then of
- 12:28Speaker 2: course you know that she went out with her knee
- 12:30Speaker 2: injury and then that kind of the whole key piece
- 12:33Speaker 2: fell apart. So she probably hasn't played a lot of big,
- 12:36Speaker 2: big games and big big moments, so experience is important.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Then you add youth to it. But my point is, God,
- 12:43Speaker 2: to imagine what sort of play she's going to be
- 12:45Speaker 2: in four or five years time. It's frightening. Oh God,
- 12:47Speaker 2: it's frightening. She'll be elite.
- 13:02Speaker 1: I do want to talk about the Diamonds announcements this week,
- 13:06Speaker 1: but first of all, I need your advice on something,
- 13:08Speaker 1: and I thank you're the woman to give me the
- 13:10Speaker 1: advice on this. So you know, we've done the Hottest
- 13:12Speaker 1: one hundred, the Dribbler's Hottest one hundred this week OZ Music.
- 13:16Speaker 1: It's great and I'm still I'm in the final throws
- 13:20Speaker 1: of finalizing that.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Love it, love it.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Because when you look at the large organization that is
- 13:26Speaker 1: no Dribble, it is Carolyn Swindle. But we're going through
- 13:31Speaker 1: it and had a bit of a deliver last week.
- 13:33Speaker 1: We're drive to Orange. My father in law turn ninety,
- 13:35Speaker 1: Happy birthday, Ben. He does not know what a podcast is,
- 13:38Speaker 1: so he will never hear this, but we love him
- 13:41Speaker 1: and we're driving up and I'm telling the kids through
- 13:43Speaker 1: some of these songs. And how old my daughter is
- 13:46Speaker 1: twelve years old, which if you stay in a hotel
- 13:48Speaker 1: or in an airline they call you an adult. Is
- 13:50Speaker 1: that old enough to understand the great Australian tradition of
- 13:54Speaker 1: how to respond if someone says, I know a lot
- 14:03Speaker 1: of the parents at school think that the children don't
- 14:05Speaker 1: know any swear words by year six. But I will
- 14:07Speaker 1: tell you if you walk through the playground and they
- 14:09Speaker 1: don't know that you are somewhere nearby, you will understand
- 14:12Speaker 1: that they know all the words, all the words, all
- 14:16Speaker 1: the swear words. So at what age do you get
- 14:20Speaker 1: introduced to the cultural experience of the angels.
- 14:23Speaker 2: I think it's connected to your parents, don't you think
- 14:25Speaker 2: I don't know if a kid just listens out, or
- 14:27Speaker 2: that it's connected to the fact that the parents have
- 14:29Speaker 2: it playing in the background with a few gym beans.
- 14:35Speaker 1: It's so funny because whoever you are, that people who
- 14:39Speaker 1: don't swear will participate in that. Clearly we heard from
- 14:43Speaker 1: last week's episode that I am not of the no
- 14:46Speaker 1: swearing crowd, but people will participate in that. It's quite
- 14:50Speaker 1: it's a very I don't know, what is it democratizing song.
- 14:53Speaker 2: I'm a Melbourne girl. Grew up in Mount Waverley. We
- 14:55Speaker 2: lived next door to the Alises, and so we used
- 14:59Speaker 2: to always see that I live in next door. But
- 15:03Speaker 2: what would happen was is that my brother and my
- 15:06Speaker 2: bedroom window was there was a fence line, and then
- 15:10Speaker 2: Stephen and Margaret's the kids on the next door their bedroom,
- 15:14Speaker 2: and if one of us was playing the song, we'd
- 15:16Speaker 2: scream out to the other Alice, Alice, I reckon. We
- 15:20Speaker 2: were twelve. I think we were around about that same age.
- 15:23Speaker 2: So yeah, it's a great tradition that song, isn't it.
- 15:27Speaker 2: That's how I learned to swear.
- 15:28Speaker 1: One more thing before we get back to netball, is
- 15:31Speaker 1: before you judge me, does your dog have a costume box?
- 15:37Speaker 2: Oh? Catherine Cox, she's such a bugger.
- 15:42Speaker 1: She sent me some suggestions for discussion.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Oh she makes me laugh. She's always got her phone
- 15:49Speaker 2: on her writing notes about what's the best next conversation
- 15:52Speaker 2: to have on the dribble. So let's just let the
- 15:54Speaker 2: folks know. So Coxy and I got the opportunity to
- 15:56Speaker 2: commentate on the weekend first time this season, so we
- 15:58Speaker 2: got a bit excited and straight on the phone. I'm
- 16:01Speaker 2: coming on Thursday, Can I stay? Yes, Catherine, you can
- 16:03Speaker 2: come and stay. And so we get up Friday morning
- 16:07Speaker 2: and our little puppy, kavoodle Bailey mostly poodle, so has
- 16:14Speaker 2: a love hate relationship with Kath. I'll be blatantly honest
- 16:16Speaker 2: with you, it's like fifty first dates. Catherine comes in
- 16:21Speaker 2: and Catherine is so persistent, she just keeps trying. She
- 16:24Speaker 2: loves doing Bailey come here and yeah, I don't know
- 16:27Speaker 2: if dog dogs like her. Bailey has a hard time
- 16:30Speaker 2: of it, but eventually, if you get a treat out,
- 16:32Speaker 2: Bailey you know, finds her way across to Catherine. And
- 16:35Speaker 2: so they've eventually got to this point where they like
- 16:38Speaker 2: each other. Anyhow, Rose in the house. You know, we've
- 16:41Speaker 2: got the salon Roses cutting hair and whatnot, and one
- 16:45Speaker 2: of her clients, Tanya's in and so I've introduced Tanya
- 16:48Speaker 2: to Kath and we're sitting there having a chat and
- 16:49Speaker 2: Bailey's just sitting in the salon looking at everyone, and
- 16:52Speaker 2: it was quite cold outside, and Rose made a comment
- 16:56Speaker 2: and said to Bailey, would you like to put one
- 16:58Speaker 2: of your jumpers on? And all started laughing, like, you know,
- 17:02Speaker 2: you're not putting it anything, and Catherine's like, you don't
- 17:04Speaker 2: put clothes on the dog, do you. And I'm like, oh, Catherine,
- 17:07Speaker 2: just one moment, please, And of course, I walk across
- 17:09Speaker 2: to the cupboard and I pull out the box which
- 17:11Speaker 2: is full of all of Bailey's and pretties, all her
- 17:15Speaker 2: little pretties that she puts on. But the thing is
- 17:21Speaker 2: is that our dog has a real issue with clothing.
- 17:26Speaker 2: So oh yeah, well yes, so I've been told that
- 17:28Speaker 2: by many people, which I'll tell you about that in
- 17:30Speaker 2: just a second. So anyhow, basically, we pull out the
- 17:32Speaker 2: pretties and I said to Katherine, yeah, I said, have
- 17:36Speaker 2: a watch of this. And I'm like, Bailey, I said,
- 17:38Speaker 2: we're gonna go and bring put your pretties on, and
- 17:40Speaker 2: i'd take over a little jacket, and she's frozen, like
- 17:44Speaker 2: she freezes, like she stands on all four and freezers.
- 17:47Speaker 2: And then I put her jacket on and like Catherine's wet,
- 17:50Speaker 2: literally Nelly wet her pants laughing. I'm like, come on, Bailey,
- 17:54Speaker 2: let's go outside to play with the ball. And Bailey's
- 17:56Speaker 2: feet are frozen, like they're stuck to the ground, caring,
- 17:59Speaker 2: like you can't move. It's like it's like a stray
- 18:02Speaker 2: jacket on this dog, right, And so anyhow, I was
- 18:05Speaker 2: telling Catherine that when we first got her as a puppy,
- 18:08Speaker 2: we did have a little, you know, like a little
- 18:11Speaker 2: nit jumper that we'd put on her. It was very pretty,
- 18:14Speaker 2: which is where the word pretties, where pretties came from.
- 18:17Speaker 2: And we're down the park one day and this man
- 18:18Speaker 2: just walked up to us and said you shouldn't put
- 18:20Speaker 2: clothes on your dog. And I was like, oh, okay,
- 18:24Speaker 2: thanks for your life. I've been having a lovely day too. Yeah,
- 18:27Speaker 2: thanks so much. But it really made us think. So
- 18:29Speaker 2: we came home, we took the jumper off Bailey and
- 18:32Speaker 2: she was the happiest dog we've ever seen. And now
- 18:34Speaker 2: she just hates any time the prettiest box comes out.
- 18:37Speaker 1: It's not very DIGNI fine for a dog.
- 18:40Speaker 2: But it can it looks, it can look cute.
- 18:42Speaker 1: I love a good Halloween costume on a dog too.
- 18:45Speaker 1: I'm not a big fan of dogs having tam outfits
- 18:48Speaker 1: because I figured that like nature has sorted it out.
- 18:51Speaker 1: But I do. I love I love seeing the dogs
- 18:53Speaker 1: on Halloween.
- 18:54Speaker 2: We've got a Christmas outfit that we bring out. We've
- 18:56Speaker 2: got a Peter Alexander little neck like you know, neck
- 19:01Speaker 2: collary thing. And then we've got the denim jacket that
- 19:03Speaker 2: says bite me, you know, I mean, that's pretty cool.
- 19:06Speaker 2: And then we've also got we've also because we live
- 19:08Speaker 2: on the beach, like the beach are a bit surfy,
- 19:10Speaker 2: like in our household, we're like, oh, she needs a
- 19:12Speaker 2: surfboard and like a bit of a cool hat with
- 19:16Speaker 2: some sunglasses on and a Hawaiian shirt. So we've got
- 19:19Speaker 2: that as well. She's a bit of a tomboy, a
- 19:21Speaker 2: bit like her mother.
- 19:23Speaker 1: I think that like we're as a society losing our
- 19:26Speaker 1: minds with dogs, though.
- 19:29Speaker 2: I know it's sad, isn't it.
- 19:30Speaker 1: There's a US comedian Nate Forgatz, and he's fantastic stand up.
- 19:35Speaker 1: He's got a bunch of one hour specials worth watching.
- 19:38Speaker 1: But he was talking about he's about our age, talking
- 19:41Speaker 1: about like in the eighties, the dog was outside and
- 19:45Speaker 1: it was basically wild, and it's like, you know, should
- 19:49Speaker 1: I go out in the backyard, Well I wouldn't the
- 19:51Speaker 1: dog is there. And now it's like now the dogs,
- 19:53Speaker 1: he said, the dog dogs are not dogs anymore. They
- 19:56Speaker 1: have turned into people. We've turned them into people. But
- 19:59Speaker 1: I read something other day that dogs know that we
- 20:03Speaker 1: are a different species. Cats think that humans are just
- 20:07Speaker 1: like incompetent cats. That it's like we're the same. But
- 20:10Speaker 1: you just can't do all the good stuff that I can.
- 20:13Speaker 1: You can't.
- 20:14Speaker 2: I despise cats, right, I've never had a relationship with
- 20:18Speaker 2: a cat in my life.
- 20:18Speaker 1: I like those little black and white cats. Sometimes you
- 20:20Speaker 1: see one it's got a little Hitler mustache. Yeah, that's
- 20:24Speaker 1: unfortunate markings.
- 20:26Speaker 2: Do you know the only cat that I really liked
- 20:28Speaker 2: was the cartoon one on Puss in Boots. You know
- 20:33Speaker 2: who was the actor that did the voice, Antonio Benderaz.
- 20:37Speaker 1: I will say, though, and possibly telling you this for
- 20:40Speaker 1: the first time, I don't know whether you're aware that's
- 20:41Speaker 1: not a real cat.
- 20:42Speaker 2: I know, but it's as close as I'm ever going
- 20:44Speaker 2: to get to one. But the fur ball that came
- 20:46Speaker 2: out of that non real cat's mouth was a ripper.
- 20:49Speaker 2: That was terrific.
- 20:56Speaker 1: We are covering the big issues here. Before I again,
- 21:00Speaker 1: I just want to send a shout out to one
- 21:01Speaker 1: of the Dribbler's, Marilyn Bell, who's been in hospital with pneumonia.
- 21:04Speaker 1: I hope you're feeling better. Maryland. She would put a
- 21:05Speaker 1: shout out yesterday, how can I watch the game? So
- 21:08Speaker 1: hopefully feeling better by now? Though I think she's in Sydney.
- 21:12Speaker 1: It might be a Swiss fand so she could be
- 21:13Speaker 1: feeling a damn sight worse than before the game started.
- 21:16Speaker 1: But I hope you're feeling better, Maryland. But I wanted
- 21:19Speaker 1: to talk about the diamond selection. We seem a bit
- 21:23Speaker 1: light on at the shooting end.
- 21:25Speaker 2: We had a bit of a chat about this at
- 21:26Speaker 2: the back end of Pivot yesterday and it's an interesting one, right,
- 21:30Speaker 2: So I like, actually, what I see is there's opportunity, okay,
- 21:33Speaker 2: and potentially that might be what Australia needs heading into
- 21:36Speaker 2: the next two big campaigns. You would go as close
- 21:41Speaker 2: to say that form over the next period of time.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Conan Garden and Kira Austin are literally tickets book to
- 21:49Speaker 2: the next two big events. You would reminding Touchwood, no injuries, etc.
- 21:53Speaker 2: And there's good versatility in that. I reckon Conan's game
- 21:56Speaker 2: has developed. You know, we've seen her play a bit
- 21:58Speaker 2: more goal attack and it's one thing to go out
- 22:01Speaker 2: and play goal attap you actually have to do it.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Decent Oven said, so simple doesn't it. But I actually
- 22:06Speaker 2: quite like Conan's game at Gold attacks a little bit different. Defensively,
- 22:10Speaker 2: she's impressive and that's an important part. Diamonds pride themselves
- 22:14Speaker 2: on really good solid defense, so she'll contribute to that
- 22:17Speaker 2: at goal attack. So those three, but then you go, okay,
- 22:20Speaker 2: where's the fourth position? And this is my grave concern
- 22:24Speaker 2: Sophie d I've been a big fan of Sophie's for
- 22:27Speaker 2: a long time. Her season has been indifferent at the Giants,
- 22:30Speaker 2: but what does she look like in a Diamonds environment?
- 22:33Speaker 2: And this is what a lot of people I've had
- 22:35Speaker 2: I've got, I've had people messaging me, Carolyn. You wouldn't
- 22:37Speaker 2: believe the amount of messages I get privately about team
- 22:41Speaker 2: not being informed. They haven't selected this, and they haven't
- 22:43Speaker 2: selected that.
- 22:43Speaker 1: What outfits your dog wearing today? Yeah?
- 22:46Speaker 2: Yeah, so true. But what you've got to remember, though,
- 22:50Speaker 2: is that one player out of form in a season
- 22:55Speaker 2: can very quickly find form in a Diamonds environment. There's
- 23:00Speaker 2: a lot of reasons why SSN teams may not perform
- 23:03Speaker 2: in a given year. It could be the list management,
- 23:05Speaker 2: it might be a disconnect with the coach. It's not
- 23:08Speaker 2: always necessarily just a poor performance by the individual. And
- 23:11Speaker 2: so that's the job of the selectors to kind of
- 23:14Speaker 2: look beyond I guess what's directly in front of the
- 23:17Speaker 2: fans eyes. And so you've got to trust the selection.
- 23:19Speaker 1: To and I guess that's what they've done with Lucy
- 23:21Speaker 1: Austin right, Well, has she played any super and Apple.
- 23:25Speaker 2: No, I can't even think of she stepped on the
- 23:27Speaker 2: court this year. My brain's escaping me at the moment.
- 23:30Speaker 2: But Lucy Austin's a future talent, you have to She's
- 23:35Speaker 2: a great height, she's a long range shooter, she's a
- 23:37Speaker 2: target under the post. She needs to be playing SSN
- 23:40Speaker 2: and that's a big challenge for her in her decision
- 23:44Speaker 2: making moving forward. It's not the responsibility of the Adelaide Thunderbirds,
- 23:49Speaker 2: so it's on Lucy to make those decisions. And so
- 23:53Speaker 2: but like I think it's really good that the Diamonds
- 23:55Speaker 2: a that's again, that's the job. If I was sitting
- 23:58Speaker 2: in the selector's chair, you don't you don't get too
- 24:00Speaker 2: caught up in Danell playing in New Zealand, or Lucy
- 24:03Speaker 2: not playing in a game, or Alice t Neil, you know,
- 24:06Speaker 2: playing riper netball. But we've already got fifteen wing attacks.
- 24:09Speaker 2: You have to make decisions well and over beyond what
- 24:12Speaker 2: we're all just seeing as fans. So yeah, it's.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Interesting that this is this the downside of the internationals
- 24:19Speaker 1: playing in our camp, Like it is the best camp.
- 24:21Speaker 1: It's great netball. But if you've got someone like Lucy
- 24:24Speaker 1: Austin who can't get caught time because there are international shooters,
- 24:29Speaker 1: it's like are we But you're dead right, it's not
- 24:31Speaker 1: the Thunderbird's responsibility to do that. Thunderbird's responsibility is to
- 24:34Speaker 1: win premiership.
- 24:35Speaker 2: Yes, it's the great it's the great debate of the game,
- 24:39Speaker 2: isn't it the world's best netball competition and opening up
- 24:42Speaker 2: the shores for the best talent in the world to
- 24:45Speaker 2: be here, But to make sure that we're balancing it
- 24:48Speaker 2: with a really good Australian pathway. And I don't think
- 24:50Speaker 2: this debate will ever go away. But the good news
- 24:53Speaker 2: is that every trophy that exists, it's in our cabinets.
- 24:56Speaker 1: So overseas at the moment as well, Lation.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Cut one overseas. But you know, like go back to
- 25:02Speaker 2: where we had nothing and it was right in the
- 25:04Speaker 2: midst of vessels in and you know, I think we
- 25:07Speaker 2: have a responsibility and you know, in an ultimate world
- 25:10Speaker 2: we get a number of an increasing teams if the
- 25:13Speaker 2: system can afford it, and there's more Australian opportunities that
- 25:15Speaker 2: open up. It's not going to stop the big names
- 25:17Speaker 2: coming to our shores. There's too much at stake to
- 25:19Speaker 2: win premierships. So and it's an entertainment product. It's just
- 25:24Speaker 2: trying to find the balance amongst all of those.
- 25:26Speaker 1: And at one hundred percent does entertain doesn't it's absolutely fantastic.
- 25:30Speaker 1: Hey question for you. So teams that are now out
- 25:33Speaker 1: of the finals, so let's look at Sunshine case for example.
- 25:36Speaker 1: If those players don't have a contract, are they off contract? Now,
- 25:39Speaker 1: what I'm thinking is just and obviously this is a
- 25:42Speaker 1: complete hypothetical with Teak and ashanitsy out. Could Brian E
- 25:46Speaker 1: ring ash Evan and say I've got a little short
- 25:49Speaker 1: turned contract for you for the next couple for one
- 25:51Speaker 1: week maybe two.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Na so all contracts go through to the thirtieth of September.
- 25:57Speaker 2: So if your season finishes short, you still you're still
- 25:59Speaker 2: locked the way with your class and you've got a
- 26:00Speaker 2: lot of commercial commitments that you know, you're still kind
- 26:04Speaker 2: of ticking boxes for sponsors, you're trying to sell membership
- 26:07Speaker 2: for the following season, you're heading out to associations and
- 26:10Speaker 2: connecting with grassroots. So the players have that plus also too,
- 26:13Speaker 2: they've got annual leave to get away and then some
- 26:16Speaker 2: of them have international commitments, so they'll be a couple
- 26:20Speaker 2: of weeks off and then straight into normal programming in
- 26:23Speaker 2: terms of training, So there's no opportunity for those sneaky
- 26:26Speaker 2: little contracts. At the moment, as far as contracting is concerned,
- 26:30Speaker 2: we're in an embargoed period. So the finals basically shuts
- 26:33Speaker 2: down all ability to contract. So you had up until
- 26:36Speaker 2: the week before finals, starting the week of final starting
- 26:40Speaker 2: where you could contract your own athletes that were in
- 26:42Speaker 2: your club or anyone that wasn't currently contracted. And then
- 26:46Speaker 2: now we're embargoed. And then on the Monday after the
- 26:48Speaker 2: Grand Final that free agent window opens up, so and
- 26:52Speaker 2: then it's like hell for lever.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Well, that's exciting, isn't it.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 26:54Speaker 1: Okay, so that the Maps have made a couple of
- 26:56Speaker 1: announcements about locking in some of their own players. Again,
- 27:00Speaker 1: I can't think of who other than Shimona Jock, but yeah,
- 27:02Speaker 1: they have made some announcements. I haven't seen anyone else
- 27:04Speaker 1: making announcements.
- 27:05Speaker 2: No, no, and at a lot of clubs that are
- 27:08Speaker 2: in finals and ours there's one example of it. We'll
- 27:10Speaker 2: worry about it once. Yeah, you know, we're doing whatever
- 27:13Speaker 2: we are and we need to in the background, but
- 27:15Speaker 2: we'll go public. Like at the moment, the focus is
- 27:17Speaker 2: on the team being successful and so you don't want
- 27:20Speaker 2: to kind of just I guess, yeah, take anyr focus
- 27:23Speaker 2: away from that. So there'll be a lot of announcements
- 27:25Speaker 2: in the week's straight after the Grand Final, imagine from
- 27:28Speaker 2: lots of clubs, which is exciting.
- 27:29Speaker 1: And do you reckon, there's going to be much more
- 27:31Speaker 1: change in the coaching realm. So we've got Julie Fitzgerald
- 27:35Speaker 1: announcing that she's stepped in, and you know, hats off
- 27:38Speaker 1: to her. She would have known this at the last game,
- 27:42Speaker 1: and she let Joe Harton have that space, which I
- 27:45Speaker 1: thought was really generous that she didn't make this decision
- 27:47Speaker 1: three days ago. She would have known. She would have
- 27:50Speaker 1: made this decision over time, but said you can have
- 27:53Speaker 1: that spotlight and you can have that farewell moment. I
- 27:55Speaker 1: thought that was really really generous and you know, consistent
- 27:59Speaker 1: with thing I know about Julie Fitzgerald.
- 28:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I was going to say, very consistent with the
- 28:03Speaker 2: lady that is Julie Fitzgerald, isn't it. And I'm hoping,
- 28:07Speaker 2: fingers crossed that she's going to sit down with Cat
- 28:10Speaker 2: Cox and do a bit of a nice little chat
- 28:13Speaker 2: potentially before the Grand Final. Hopefully that pulls off. I
- 28:16Speaker 2: think that'll be great to hear from her. Yeah, good
- 28:19Speaker 2: on her. And so we actually said on Pivot, yes, say,
- 28:22Speaker 2: this is a really interesting one. We hadn't heard Julie
- 28:25Speaker 2: use the word retirement post on Facebook yesterday she thanked
- 28:32Speaker 2: everyone for all of their messages and use the word retirement.
- 28:36Speaker 2: So I guess I mean the thing is with you
- 28:40Speaker 2: never say never, right, Like it's a tough one to
- 28:41Speaker 2: say retirement, Julie. There will be plenty of opportunities for
- 28:45Speaker 2: Julie to go and do bits and pieces around the world.
- 28:47Speaker 2: There's always, you know, like there's always countries looking for
- 28:51Speaker 2: you know, good coaches to go in and help their
- 28:53Speaker 2: coaches or you know, et cetera. So I think there
- 28:55Speaker 2: might be some nice things for Julia to get involved in.
- 28:59Speaker 2: Does she come back in coach at this level? Again,
- 29:02Speaker 2: that's probably what I think the word retirement means, maybe
- 29:06Speaker 2: we don't see your coaching SSN again. Would she get
- 29:09Speaker 2: involved in pathway programs potentially? Does she get involved internationally potentially?
- 29:14Speaker 2: But yeah, what a career, Hey, I'm real.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, I wonder if there's something too about accessing
- 29:21Speaker 1: a super that she has to officially retire, even if
- 29:23Speaker 1: she can still do bits and pieces of contract work,
- 29:26Speaker 1: because there is like a financial threshold that you're allowed
- 29:29Speaker 1: to still earn a little bit or whatever. But it
- 29:31Speaker 1: may well she might have had an accountant say, no,
- 29:33Speaker 1: you have to officially retire.
- 29:35Speaker 2: Well that'd a bit tough, wouldn't it like your accountant
- 29:37Speaker 2: telling you to give up your netball career?
- 29:42Speaker 1: But so the giants will giants have to work out
- 29:45Speaker 1: whether the giants are the giants next year. So they've
- 29:47Speaker 1: got to But really, you've got to lock in the
- 29:50Speaker 1: coach before you can lock in players. Don't because there's
- 29:52Speaker 1: a lot of I think this was Kim Green was
- 29:54Speaker 1: talking about this on Pivot that it's like there's a clause,
- 29:56Speaker 1: there was clauses in her contract saying if the coach changes,
- 29:58Speaker 1: I can go.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Yeah, and not every player has that, you know, like
- 30:02Speaker 2: I can tell you I've negotiated a lot of contracts
- 30:05Speaker 2: and not every player has that. But you know, we
- 30:07Speaker 2: certainly locked in a Fever team without a coach before
- 30:12Speaker 2: Dan Ryan was announced, and it's not easy. Players are very,
- 30:18Speaker 2: very mindful, and so they should be around who's going
- 30:21Speaker 2: to be at the lead. I guess the interesting thing
- 30:26Speaker 2: for me with the Giants is I just don't know
- 30:29Speaker 2: whether their timing is going to match. And I'm personally
- 30:34Speaker 2: a really big believer in going to market around these things.
- 30:38Speaker 2: And if you've got the luxury of time on your side,
- 30:41Speaker 2: I think testing the market, and you can test the
- 30:45Speaker 2: market privately, but I do think it's really important that
- 30:48Speaker 2: you know you test the market broadly. And I don't
- 30:51Speaker 2: know whether the Giants are going to have time to
- 30:52Speaker 2: do that. So, like you say, list management's happening, recruitment's happening.
- 30:57Speaker 2: Unless they've got something ticking over in the back ground,
- 31:00Speaker 2: I don't know. But yeah, this for me is a
- 31:03Speaker 2: really interesting space to watch, to see who pops up,
- 31:08Speaker 2: interesting and in bloody important, so.
- 31:10Speaker 1: Much go God. If the season ends and you think,
- 31:12Speaker 1: oh it's sad, but it's like, oh, it's all the
- 31:14Speaker 1: off court stuff that gets interesting.
- 31:17Speaker 2: It's a show on its own, isn't it.
- 31:18Speaker 1: I only let you go shortly, but I do have
- 31:20Speaker 1: a question from a dribbler, and I think you're the
- 31:22Speaker 1: person to answer this. So Jenna Jenna listens to the
- 31:26Speaker 1: podcast in the middle of the night, feeding her two
- 31:28Speaker 1: months old baby boy. But she said, the numbers on
- 31:30Speaker 1: the player's dresses, do they signify anything? And how do
- 31:33Speaker 1: they get to choose what the number is? Or are
- 31:35Speaker 1: they allocated a number?
- 31:37Speaker 2: Okay, so sometimes there's two numbers on a dress, but
- 31:40Speaker 2: I would.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Imagine that the none of the back and one at
- 31:42Speaker 1: the sime.
- 31:43Speaker 2: Yeah, so the one at the side, that number is
- 31:47Speaker 2: for the score bench only, Okay, right, so it helps
- 31:50Speaker 2: the score bench identified because since the rolling subs came.
- 31:54Speaker 2: Because so if you go back before the rolling stubs,
- 31:56Speaker 2: we used to have the old paperwork system where the
- 31:58Speaker 2: poor manager on the side of the bench to God
- 32:00Speaker 2: that their coach wasn't having a midlife crisis and making
- 32:03Speaker 2: a thousand changes at once and having to write all
- 32:05Speaker 2: the bloody paperwork quickly and then run it over to
- 32:08Speaker 2: the bench. And it was like, God, I'm so so outdated.
- 32:11Speaker 2: But then when the rolling subs came on. It was madness, right,
- 32:16Speaker 2: Like you've got people coming and going. And even if
- 32:18Speaker 2: you think of it from an international because I think
- 32:20Speaker 2: they started at an international level. Even at an international
- 32:23Speaker 2: level when you kind of see countries for the first time,
- 32:26Speaker 2: you actually don't know the player's names. Like we've got
- 32:29Speaker 2: the luxury of knowing these superstars daily, right, but internationally
- 32:33Speaker 2: you don't know them. And so numbers. That's where the
- 32:36Speaker 2: numbers came from. So it just allows the score bench
- 32:39Speaker 2: to identify the number and then link that to the
- 32:42Speaker 2: player's name.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Do they have that same number through the season. You're
- 32:45Speaker 1: just given a number, and yeah.
- 32:46Speaker 2: That doesn't change their because it gets printed onto their
- 32:49Speaker 2: dress and the other number, the other number is not
- 32:52Speaker 2: on everyone's resspect like that'll be their player number that
- 32:55Speaker 2: the club.
- 32:55Speaker 1: So Steph Frettwell would have one on hers.
- 32:58Speaker 2: Yeah, and number one or whatever, and yeah, Kate Maloney
- 33:01Speaker 2: or whatever it is, number thirty or one or whatever
- 33:04Speaker 2: number shit is he? So that's usually the club number.
- 33:06Speaker 1: Thank you, and thanks Jenner for sending that question in Yeah,
- 33:09Speaker 1: I reckon. We could sit here for hours, but it's
- 33:12Speaker 1: the day after your team has qualified for Grand Finals.
- 33:16Speaker 1: You have a bucket load of work to do.
- 33:18Speaker 2: So shout out just quickly to the Vixens. Shout out
- 33:21Speaker 2: to the Vixens. That was a great win by them yesterday.
- 33:24Speaker 1: I didn't think they were going to do it. Even
- 33:26Speaker 1: in that last thirty seconds, I thought, I reckon, your
- 33:29Speaker 1: heart's about to be broken. But I was really I
- 33:33Speaker 1: was really happy to say. I am worried about them
- 33:35Speaker 1: going potentially going to another Grand Final and losing another
- 33:39Speaker 1: Grand Final.
- 33:40Speaker 2: Like that's I look, you know, I mean my gutt
- 33:43Speaker 2: is is that the best Grand Final is Fever and Vixens.
- 33:45Speaker 2: In terms of the style of play two sides, I
- 33:49Speaker 2: think the probably two like Thunderbirds, certainly have o the
- 33:54Speaker 2: best defensive side in terms of gains, but in terms
- 33:57Speaker 2: of defensive kind of gill across the court, I reckon
- 34:01Speaker 2: Vixen's and Fever of the two that stand out like
- 34:04Speaker 2: a Melbourne crowd. Yeah, anyhow, but I just want to say,
- 34:08Speaker 2: yesterday and watching the Vixens play, you know, when you're
- 34:11Speaker 2: writing scripts, the script was going to be that the
- 34:14Speaker 2: Vixens had their nose in front the whole game, and
- 34:16Speaker 2: then you know, Thunderbirds through Georgie. How just find a
- 34:19Speaker 2: way the crowd gets up and then they know they
- 34:21Speaker 2: steal the thunder at the end. But if you go
- 34:23Speaker 2: back to the very beginning of the game, and funnily enough,
- 34:28Speaker 2: it was said in the commentary, there was just this
- 34:30Speaker 2: level of connection and calmness from the Vixens yesterday that
- 34:35Speaker 2: was just a little different. And every time the Thunderbirds
- 34:40Speaker 2: had a moment of challenge, the Vixen's found a way
- 34:42Speaker 2: to either win the ball back pretty quickly or just
- 34:45Speaker 2: keep their scoreboard pressure ticking over. And even when they
- 34:48Speaker 2: switched Torgeous and she popped a couple of super shots,
- 34:51Speaker 2: and then at the end, oh, there was just this sense.
- 34:53Speaker 2: I was just sitting there going, no Vixens have got this.
- 34:55Speaker 2: I just can't the script. I can see where the
- 34:58Speaker 2: script could go, but I was just They're going, I
- 35:01Speaker 2: think this is Vixen's so nice for Samon mcinness.
- 35:04Speaker 1: Absolutely interesting, isn't it. So you know you've talked about
- 35:07Speaker 1: teams needing to learn how to close out a game,
- 35:10Speaker 1: how to win, when to surge at the right time.
- 35:13Speaker 1: I think the Adelaide crowd needs to learn how to
- 35:16Speaker 1: be losing and still supporting because they are so quiet.
- 35:20Speaker 2: It's one of the hardest places to commentate why because
- 35:24Speaker 2: when their team's not doing well, the stadium is dead. Yes, yeah,
- 35:28Speaker 2: like there's just nothing. It's like, yeah, they're very patriotic
- 35:34Speaker 2: for their side and their side alone, but they're also
- 35:36Speaker 2: very can be brutal when their side's not playing well.
- 35:40Speaker 1: But whereas you go to Lightning, you hear their crowd.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Lightning can be twelve twelve goals behind and the crowd
- 35:46Speaker 1: is going bananas at every goal that they get, and
- 35:49Speaker 1: it's like that has to make a difference.
- 35:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it's an interesting way. It's it's funny, isn't it funny?
- 35:54Speaker 2: Like teams behave in a different way side of crowds
- 35:56Speaker 2: like and they do definitely behave. The Melbourne Vixen's crowds
- 36:00Speaker 2: really interesting one too. They've got a little bit more
- 36:02Speaker 2: patriotic over the last couple of years, but I go
- 36:04Speaker 2: back ten fifteen years ago when I was commentating there
- 36:07Speaker 2: and they're the most educated crowd that Like, if there's
- 36:12Speaker 2: a pass that ninety percent of fans would look and go, oh,
- 36:15Speaker 2: that's a good pass, but the Vixen's fans are like, no,
- 36:17Speaker 2: that was poorly executed. I'm not interested in that it's like,
- 36:21Speaker 2: my god, what's wrong with you? But they've got better.
- 36:25Speaker 2: In the last couple they get up and about a
- 36:27Speaker 2: bit more, which is good.
- 36:28Speaker 1: So well, they might be feeling good today and look
- 36:31Speaker 1: for mine. Honestly, I don't think the Swifts are going
- 36:35Speaker 1: to turn it around by the weekend and be able
- 36:37Speaker 1: to get over the Vixens. But I'm actually not interested
- 36:39Speaker 1: in that anymore. I just want them to feel good.
- 36:42Speaker 1: I want them to be competitive, I want them to
- 36:44Speaker 1: work together. I want them to enjoy the game. I mean,
- 36:47Speaker 1: they've done so well to get where they are. They
- 36:50Speaker 1: deserve to be in the finals. They were the strongest
- 36:52Speaker 1: team for first eight rounds of the comp. Things have changed.
- 36:57Speaker 1: They're missing Page, they're missing Teagan. But you know, I
- 37:01Speaker 1: am just really hoping that this weekend's game sends them
- 37:05Speaker 1: out with their tail feathers up and feeling good. I
- 37:09Speaker 1: don't I don't think they're going to win. I would
- 37:13Speaker 1: love that, obviously, but I just feel like the Vixen's
- 37:17Speaker 1: just as you say. They looked really calm. Remember last
- 37:19Speaker 1: year's Grand Final. They came out like buddy bats out
- 37:22Speaker 1: of hell, the Vixens, and I thought, oh my god,
- 37:25Speaker 1: this is this sustainable and we soon found out that
- 37:27Speaker 1: it was not sustainable. There was none of that yesterday.
- 37:30Speaker 1: It was sort of like, no, we are here to
- 37:32Speaker 1: do a job.
- 37:33Speaker 2: Job. Yeah, yeah, they're They're like they say, you know,
- 37:35Speaker 2: you've got a time you run And I think Vixens
- 37:37Speaker 2: are timing it perfectly. I think this would be a
- 37:39Speaker 2: fascinating week to have a documentary crew at the Swifts
- 37:43Speaker 2: to follow the week I'd be there'd be so much learning.
- 37:46Speaker 2: I thought Briany was pretty brutal but honest in a
- 37:49Speaker 2: press conference postgame and you know, like we were chatting
- 37:53Speaker 2: afterwards as coaches, you know, what would you do this
- 37:56Speaker 2: week if you were the Swift's coach? How would you
- 37:58Speaker 2: manage the week? What is it that's going to get
- 38:01Speaker 2: the most significant shift in a team that's underperforming. They
- 38:04Speaker 2: get paid Hadley back, that will help, but it isn't
- 38:07Speaker 2: the answer. They've lost an enormous amount in terms of
- 38:10Speaker 2: O'shannessy because you're fundamentally left with Klow and Turner and
- 38:17Speaker 2: if that's not working, and I said this yesterday, for me,
- 38:22Speaker 2: Clay and Turner were left a little underdone by Landon
- 38:25Speaker 2: and any other mid quarter that was there I just
- 38:27Speaker 2: didn't think they did their job yesterday, and so I.
- 38:30Speaker 1: Felt really sad for Sarah Cloud and Maddie Turner yesterday.
- 38:34Speaker 1: I felt like they were doing a job that was
- 38:37Speaker 1: much better than the scoreboard reflected. And you know, Maddie Turner,
- 38:41Speaker 1: obviously is the captain, is trying to lift and stay positive.
- 38:45Speaker 1: But you could see with Sarah Klau she was just like,
- 38:48Speaker 1: this is I'm not enjoying myself today.
- 38:52Speaker 2: And our team teams win finals, not players, and so
- 38:55Speaker 2: swiftly got to find a team performance. And like I said,
- 38:57Speaker 2: getting Hadley back will be a really good for them,
- 39:01Speaker 2: but they're gonna have to They're gonna have to find
- 39:04Speaker 2: a game plan and they're gonna have to make it
- 39:06Speaker 2: work on the weekend. And you know, at the moment,
- 39:08Speaker 2: their game plan over the last four to six weeks
- 39:10Speaker 2: has been inconsistent.
- 39:13Speaker 1: It's been really interesting.
- 39:14Speaker 2: Been inconsistently executed.
- 39:17Speaker 1: So what the hell has happened?
- 39:19Speaker 2: I don't know anyhow, be an interesting week.
- 39:22Speaker 1: But thank you for joining us, and congratulations and congratulations
- 39:26Speaker 1: to all of the Fever organization and the fans like
- 39:29Speaker 1: and I bet there's a I bet the honest website
- 39:33Speaker 1: is getting absolutely hammered today, people going yeah, well I'm
- 39:37Speaker 1: on my way over.
- 39:38Speaker 2: Terrific alrighty okay.
- 39:40Speaker 1: Well thank you and yeah all the best, have a
- 39:42Speaker 1: good week.
- 39:43Speaker 2: Thanks jamp Show everyone, see you Dribbler the Dribblers Bye,
