- 0:02You're listening to the Gil Athletics Connections podcast
- 0:05with host Mike Cunningham. Track and field world juvenile
- 0:12tuned in to our humble servant Mike Cunningham for another
- 0:16extraordinary message for Gil Athletics Connections.
- 0:21All right, we're back here at the Gill Athletics Connections
- 0:24Podcast. Man, I'm so humbled to be your
- 0:25host. Mike Cunningham, business
- 0:27development manager here for Gill Athletics and really the
- 0:30podcast guy. That's how most people know me
- 0:32and that's what we're doing here today.
- 0:33I'm the host of this great podcast where our mission, our
- 0:36goal every single episode is to uplift and honor coaches from
- 0:39around the country. We're kind of staring season 6
- 0:43down. We're almost done here.
- 0:44We're getting finished with the 6th complete year of this
- 0:46podcast, which just absolutely amazes me, boggles me that we're
- 0:50still going, still going strong because of you guys and gals
- 0:53that listen and because of our guest that we have here.
- 0:56And we're pumped for season 7 coming up.
- 0:58Starting in January. We're going to have another year
- 1:00of amazing guest men and women who choose to be track coaches.
- 1:04Man, just so pumped for that today.
- 1:06Pumped because this guy, we started to come friends, not
- 1:09just business people. Like I just love what he does.
- 1:12I've got to see two of his facilities now, which I know
- 1:14we're going to talk about that. I'm just super excited to
- 1:16introduce you to this week's guest.
- 1:18I don't think enough people know him and he's doing some amazing
- 1:20things for young people around the country, but specifically in
- 1:23Texas. And we're going to talk about
- 1:24that. Help me welcome the creator, the
- 1:26director, the Grand Poobah, the guy who, you know, the CEO plus
- 1:29the janitor. He does it all there at a, at a
- 1:32facility called Jump Smart Texas.
- 1:34We're going to learn more about what that means.
- 1:35Help me welcome the wise, the wonderful Mr. Kenny Roseman.
- 1:38Kenny, how are you, Sir? I'm doing well, Mike.
- 1:41How you doing man? I appreciate you having me on.
- 1:43I said, I know we you got a chance to come by two
- 1:46facilities. So you know, getting a chance to
- 1:49come to your podcast and talk a little bit.
- 1:51Been knowing you for many years now and hearing about your
- 1:55daughter growing up and sharing shirts and different things like
- 1:58that. It's cool to finally sit down
- 1:59and talk for a little while. Absolutely.
- 2:01Man, did I get that right. CEO, janitor, everything in
- 2:03between, right? I've seen it in action so I know
- 2:05it's right. And we try to, we try to get in
- 2:07there and get everything done to me and my coaches kind of split
- 2:10up duties. But whoever's there, we, we, we
- 2:13make it happen. Yeah, man.
- 2:14Well, I'm pumped, man. You know, kind of working
- 2:18backwards a little bit before we go back to the origin story
- 2:20here. You know, you're running a
- 2:21facility there in the Dallas Fort Worth area.
- 2:24This is your second facility that I've seen, obviously
- 2:26focusing on jumps based on the name, but you do kind of all,
- 2:29you've had a bunch of amazing athletes there.
- 2:31I'm just really like so proud of you, dude.
- 2:33Like, you know, I love our high school and our college coaches,
- 2:37no doubt. I mean, he was former high
- 2:38school and college coach myself. But I've seen you and we'll
- 2:42definitely talk about this as we move along in the journey.
- 2:45I've seen you really be cognizant of bridging the gap
- 2:48between club coaches and high school coaches.
- 2:51And that's something that, you know, especially in the state of
- 2:53Texas, But I know what happens in all 50 states.
- 2:56You know that that's a an issue that's out there is this club
- 3:00versus high school thing. And you know, one of the, you
- 3:03know, leader, leaders lead, right?
- 3:05So one of the places that I want to be leading in is how do we
- 3:08bridge that gap, create that communication.
- 3:10So, you know, knowing you and seeing what you've done, you're
- 3:14helpful in that respect. And so we'll make sure we
- 3:16definitely talk about that issue, if you will, and what we
- 3:20can, you know, maybe learn from you and help, you know, increase
- 3:23that communication so we can stop the bickering.
- 3:25Because the only people who lose, by the way, are the kids.
- 3:27That that's the problem with this whole thing is that's the
- 3:29only people who lose are the kids.
- 3:31And so we want to be leaders together.
- 3:33Yeah, perfect. Love that.
- 3:35Well, before we start, so the facility, say the facility, the,
- 3:38the club, the company, the facility is called Jump Smart
- 3:42Texas. You've told me this before and
- 3:44of course I've forgotten it 'cause I just think of you.
- 3:46You're the face to me. Not what the what it stands for,
- 3:48but I know it stands for something.
- 3:49Remind me what Jump stands for? JUMP stands for Join us making
- 3:54progress. It started as a as a nonprofit a
- 3:58little bit before COVID. So just helping out jumpers in
- 4:01the area, Texas area, get to college.
- 4:05I had opportunity to coach some really good jumpers along the
- 4:09way, as well as, you know, help and assist other Texas athletes
- 4:15getting to the next level. We've had a bunch of kids that
- 4:17would come in from, you know, Houston or, you know, now East
- 4:21Texas and Midland and, you know, really far, far places to get to
- 4:26from Dallas. But, you know, I got a chance to
- 4:29train some of these kids and then help get them to college.
- 4:32So that really helped, you know, the join us making progress
- 4:36because I do want to see kids get to college.
- 4:38I think that's the the main goal of the program.
- 4:42You know, we can jump for it, but one of the main things that
- 4:45I press is, you know, we're going to go to college, we're
- 4:47going to graduate, and we're going to use jumping as a tool
- 4:50to do that. Yeah, and I love, you know, all
- 4:52of your facilities I've been to, you know, you obviously, you
- 4:55know, a lot of pride in the schools that your athletes do go
- 4:58to. And so you have flags up on the
- 4:59wall and I've seen, you know, the University of Oregon and
- 5:02Texas and all those, those great schools.
- 5:04But you, you know, you kind of live the truth that you speak
- 5:08of. And that I've also seen the
- 5:09quote UN quote smaller school flags up there too.
- 5:12It's not like I don't get sense that you allow your ego to go,
- 5:15man. Yeah, we send all these kids to
- 5:17D1. It's like, no, no, no, we send
- 5:19our kids to college. They go to they go to school.
- 5:23I think, I think it's hard now, especially with this roster
- 5:27spots and how, how I guess competitive the NCAA is now.
- 5:34It's it's hard for a lot of high school kids to be ready for that
- 5:37level. And not that they can't get
- 5:39there, but it's not the same recruiting class as it was 10
- 5:42years ago. You know, the the 24 foot jumper
- 5:46might have had a chance to go to a 24 low guy might have had a
- 5:50chance to, you know, get big, you know, full rides in some of
- 5:52these bigger schools. Now it's not not that case.
- 5:56Do you think before this just kind of came up to me when you
- 5:59said that because of these, the roster limits on the Division
- 6:02One side, Do you think then is it more important today you
- 6:08mentioned that 24 kid that they have a second and third event,
- 6:13Meaning like, is it going to be hard for a kid who's just a good
- 6:16long jumper and you know, maybe doesn't even do the triple jump
- 6:20and you know, he's probably fast, but maybe he doesn't run
- 6:22on the relays or whatnot at school.
- 6:24Is it going to be better for a kid to maybe be not as high?
- 6:27Like not be a 25 foot jumper that's obviously great, but if
- 6:30he's a 24 he better be a 50 plus triple jumper and a 10/2 or
- 6:34something like that to get these roster spot spots.
- 6:39And I have seen I'm not a college coach, but I have, we
- 6:42have hundreds of kids in college now and just going through the
- 6:45recruiting process and how it's changed in the last years, it's
- 6:48you're going to have to be able to provide value.
- 6:52So whether that's you being a conference champion, regional,
- 6:56you know, national qualifier, or you being able to be competitive
- 7:01in two events like you were saying, or multiple events, or
- 7:03being a a long jump kid that can hop on a relay or the same
- 7:08thing, a long jumper that can score a point or two and triple
- 7:10jump. You know, I think that
- 7:13especially for like, I guess our training program, we have to be
- 7:15able to provide value. So whether that's one or two
- 7:19events, I'm not saying be a stud at everything we do, but we have
- 7:22to, again, depending on the level, get these kids ready to
- 7:26be able to help a team. Yeah, I'm gonna use extremes
- 7:29here, but yeah, it makes it seem like a if a kids a 26 foot long
- 7:32jumper but does nothing else versus a kid is a 25 and also a
- 7:3752 triple and a like I said, a 10/2 is like, oh, I I might give
- 7:40up that 26 footer to go get that 25.
- 7:42That's you you talk about. You get the right word value.
- 7:45Like, oh, wait a minute, I got 2 maybe 3-4 events out of this kid
- 7:49versus someone. So maybe the lesson out there
- 7:52for high school coaches and high school athletes is keep yourself
- 7:56available to do other events. Don't.
- 7:58You may be a great long term, you may be a great high jumper.
- 8:01You might want to start finding another event that you also can
- 8:04be very good at if that's your goal.
- 8:06Not everybody wants to go to Division One and not everybody
- 8:08should honestly go Division One. There's a lot of other great
- 8:11schools and coaches and programs out there.
- 8:13So, but I like that word value. That's that.
- 8:15Seems like a keyword there. All right.
- 8:17I think on any level of the recruiting process where it's
- 8:20NAIA, JUCO, D1D2D3, I think it's still value.
- 8:26And it, it, we can range the scales like for any, any level
- 8:30of you know, that the kid may be at, but I think it's still going
- 8:33to be providing value because I think that's how you know the
- 8:37world works. You know at at your job you have
- 8:40to provide a value so they pay you that's.
- 8:42Right, so that's right. Yeah.
- 8:43If we came to jump smart Texas and you said yeah, I only do the
- 8:46long jump, they'd be like, well, this other guy does triple and
- 8:49high and hurdle. What do you mean you only do All
- 8:50right, well, I guess maybe I'm not getting as much value there.
- 8:53Yeah, I love that one. That's going to be the theme.
- 8:55I think I love that. Well, let's bring value.
- 8:57You know, one of our our number one goal here is to uplift and
- 9:00honor you and your journey, what you've done in this great sport,
- 9:02in this great profession. And also for our listeners, you
- 9:05know how we bring value to them that like what we just had that
- 9:08conversation there. I think that's that's value for
- 9:10for listeners as well. So let's hop in our way back
- 9:13machine. Can you know assume it?
- 9:14Well, I know you there's no assumption here.
- 9:15I know you are an athlete. So knowing that you are an
- 9:18athlete, where does track and field start for you?
- 9:22Oh, I was thinking 6th or 7th grade.
- 9:26I was, I grew up playing soccer and football prices.
- 9:30I was 6 around I guess I think 7th grade.
- 9:34My mom introduced me to triple jump and that's only because I
- 9:39was again a soccer player so that I they put me in the 800 in
- 9:42the mile and of course I hated it.
- 9:46Nobody wants to. So of course I hated it.
- 9:49So what's the thing to get me to run the least?
- 9:51I guess it was long jump, triple jump, high jump.
- 9:55So I I got to experimenting with those and again, I was still a
- 10:00soccer player more, more. So I would say until maybe my
- 10:05sophomore junior year, I kind of find found a private coach that
- 10:09did something similar to what I'm doing now and I improved a
- 10:14whole lot and I was like, well, maybe track isn't that bad.
- 10:16You know, that's interesting. A lot of times I like asking our
- 10:20coaches who were athletes who played football and track, like,
- 10:23hey, so were you a, you know, would you have considered
- 10:25yourself a football player who ran track or a track?
- 10:27You, you, you kind of have the same question though, with
- 10:29soccer. So I'm hearing like maybe at
- 10:31least in the beginning, you were a soccer player who did track,
- 10:33not a track athlete who did. Soccer, No, I, I did, I, I just,
- 10:37I was a competitive soccer like I did club soccer until my
- 10:40junior year and then it was, I remember I had to miss a
- 10:44tournament to go to Nike Indoor Nationals and I end up getting
- 10:47third there. So it was all right, man.
- 10:51I know I'm not the third best soccer player in the country.
- 10:53And so just finding a little bit of success in triple jumpers and
- 10:59then being OK and long jump back then was all right, man.
- 11:02Maybe I should Probably. That's funny.
- 11:06That's what I like that Like I know I'm not the third best
- 11:08soccer guy out there. Were you?
- 11:11Because I think soccer is different.
- 11:13So I'm kind of just curious, were you, were you good enough
- 11:16in soccer though to be recruited?
- 11:19I was getting to the recruitable age.
- 11:21I I stopped club my junior. I played high school like, but
- 11:25it wasn't. High level because soccer is.
- 11:27I thought soccer was a little different, like like a much,
- 11:29much earlier. We do, like I said, Olympic
- 11:32development programs and like teams they had and that's why I
- 11:36kind of think I brought with the track muse and the stuff that
- 11:39I'm trying to do is a little bit more showcase style, right?
- 11:43The Olympic team development, different things like that.
- 11:47It's I guess soccer. They recruit for colleges, but I
- 11:51mean they also get recruited to play pro soccer.
- 11:54Yeah, yeah, it's a it's a different system than, you know,
- 11:56I'm used to maybe a little bit more straightforward sports,
- 11:59track and football, which always, you know, trips me out
- 12:03when like things that happen outside the norm.
- 12:04Like in football, when you hear about the 8th grader whose offer
- 12:06and it's like, what do you mean they were like their 8th grade?
- 12:09Like who even who even knows what they're going to be as a
- 12:11sophomore and who that coach even going to be there, for
- 12:13crying out loud? So but soccer had always heard
- 12:16was a little little little difference.
- 12:18I think that that OD program I think has a lot to do with that.
- 12:22Yeah. So you get introduced fairly
- 12:26early. You know, you get introduced to
- 12:27your favorite events, the 800 and the mile early, but then
- 12:29finally move over to the jumps. Of course.
- 12:32What was it? Besides not having to run 2
- 12:36laps, 3 laps, 4 laps? What was it about the jumps that
- 12:38kind of Yeah, what you got introduced to him?
- 12:41Like, really? I'll say what your appetite.
- 12:43You're like, oh, wait a minute, this is what I'm supposed to be
- 12:45doing? Well, my, I think my family
- 12:49played basketball. Most of my family played
- 12:51basketball. I and they, they guys said they
- 12:54can jump high. I guess like my dad could was,
- 12:56you know, 5859 He was doing all the between the legs jumped.
- 13:00So for me, a soccer player doesn't show that right.
- 13:03So when I get to go out there and you know, I was being a
- 13:06little shorter guy that can like a dunk and do all this other
- 13:08stuff, it was it was cool to see that stuff, I guess.
- 13:11So I think that's kind of what I liked as I got older, the
- 13:17technique, especially triple jump.
- 13:21I'm still a big perfectionist and I think you have a lot to
- 13:25that you can improve on. I was never the fastest Sprint
- 13:28guy. So I think long jump, it wasn't,
- 13:31I was never going to be a, you know, a Carl Lewis or a big
- 13:35super, super far along jumper just because I was never very, I
- 13:38wasn't blazing, you know, Yeah. Did you, first of all, are you
- 13:41growing up in Texas? Are you from?
- 13:43Yeah, I'm from the Dallas area. Yeah, OK.
- 13:46When you got introduced to long and triple, like I'm trying to
- 13:48remember. So I don't know if I've ever
- 13:51told this story before. So in high school, I know I've
- 13:53told this part in high school, my first three years, freshmen
- 13:56through junior, my track coach, Dennis Anderson, love him to
- 13:59death, but had no clue what it meant to coach track.
- 14:02We literally did our events and went home every single day.
- 14:05Now, I was an 800 Miller guy, right?
- 14:07So every day I'd run the 4 by 8, the open 8, the mile that and
- 14:13then usually like the two mile or the four by four or both.
- 14:15And we literally did it in order, like we'd run our 4 by 8.
- 14:17All the rest of the team would watch us.
- 14:19Well, the four of us ran the four by 8:00 and then we turn
- 14:22our eyes to the 100 and the 100 guys would run.
- 14:24Well, eventually I started thinking like, wait a minute,
- 14:26why don't I just run like the 100 or something?
- 14:28That's, that's way less to do with practice, right?
- 14:30Well, I wasn't fast enough, right?
- 14:32But I was like, Hey, you know what, I, I still remember this.
- 14:34I lived right across the street from the high school.
- 14:36So I, I went over one night after practice and I was like,
- 14:39maybe it was a weekend. And I was like, you know, we
- 14:41don't have very many long jumpers.
- 14:43Like I wonder if I become the long jump guy.
- 14:45I don't even think we even knew what the triple jump was, bro.
- 14:47So that, that that wasn't even in my head.
- 14:50But I was like, I bet I could long jump.
- 14:51And then all I have to do at practice is do a couple long
- 14:54jumps. Yeah, smart thinking here,
- 14:57right. So I go over to our runway and
- 15:00I'm, you know, the, the smart. That's all the smart thing.
- 15:02And the rest is all dumb. I don't know anything about the
- 15:04long jump. So I literally just go to the
- 15:07very end of the runway. So, you know, 150 feet or
- 15:11whatever the heck it was. Oh well, yeah, you know, all the
- 15:15way down is a is a pretty tough statement to say.
- 15:17They can, you know, I run as fast as I can for as far as I
- 15:20can. I'm basically jogging when I get
- 15:22to the, you know, we didn't have a board, just the paint and I
- 15:25jumped and obviously, you know, didn't get very far, but it hurt
- 15:28as as well. I just remember like just, you
- 15:30know, trying to do everything, whatever.
- 15:31I thought long jump was like it hurt.
- 15:33I literally was like, Nah, I'll stick to 800.
- 15:35That's how bad in the long jump I was, bro, I was so bad.
- 15:38I was like, I'd rather do the 800.
- 15:39That's how terrible I was. Do you remember your first time
- 15:44of like, OK, whether it's the long or the triple, do you
- 15:46remember the first time in like, oh man, either that hurt or it's
- 15:49like, oh, wait a minute, Like I'm kind of pretty good at this.
- 15:52Like, you know, there's some natural talent to some of this
- 15:54stuff. I.
- 15:55Mean against my coach, I guess starting off sounds like you my
- 16:00but that was my mom and my dad actually taught me how to jump
- 16:02when I started right. So again, they weren't high
- 16:06level jumpers and how I learned how to long jump was my dad
- 16:10would swing a rake like a baseball bat at around knee
- 16:14level and I had to jump over the rake to get my feet.
- 16:16Up. Shut up.
- 16:17We didn't have hurdles so that he was swinging like he wasn't
- 16:20swinging fast, but. OK, I'm sorry in.
- 16:24My head. Excuse me, not my head in my.
- 16:25Head. I was like.
- 16:26It had a little speed. I have a scar on my knee to
- 16:28prove it, but that's that's how I learned how to get my feet.
- 16:31We didn't have a hurdle, so I learned how to jump, get my feet
- 16:36up that way. I'm thinking I got to call DCFS
- 16:39on your dad. Now I got a number we can call
- 16:41now. Yeah.
- 16:44So that's that's how I learned how to do certain drills.
- 16:48But I think. So you, you were taught like
- 16:51actual drill, you know, whether that's the right or wrong drill.
- 16:53You were actually kind of taught how to long jump where I was
- 16:56just like, here's what the long jump is, run and jump and you
- 16:59know, you got to. Yeah, I mean they to an extent,
- 17:01yeah. They just said run and jump as
- 17:03far as you can, triple jump. You know, it's always the little
- 17:07baby second phase. So I definitely started like
- 17:09that as as I got older, I, let's say, did some private lessons,
- 17:15went to the TCU camps and all that stuff.
- 17:17So. Oh, you got?
- 17:17To go camps too. Yeah.
- 17:19Did did you like this? Always amazes me, you know, as
- 17:21someone who ended up becoming a a fairly good triple jump coach
- 17:24here myself, all because of my mentor Boosh X later, though,
- 17:28nothing from definitely nothing from my experiences, But you
- 17:32know, I got pretty good. And so I love when when I when I
- 17:36talk to people about track or, you know, they talk about their
- 17:38experiences and they'll go in invariably someone will say,
- 17:41well, I tried to triple jump and that hurts.
- 17:43And it's like really not triple jumping doesn't hurt when you do
- 17:47it right. Anything hurts if you do it
- 17:49wrong, But it's like it's just so funny.
- 17:51The triple jump is an automatic like, Oh, that even good ones,
- 17:54it hurts. It's like not, not really did
- 17:56when he first started tripling, was that something that was
- 17:58painful or? Ripple jump, no, but man, high
- 18:02jump, man, that was my probably my word I had I almost broke my
- 18:06nose doing high jump. What?
- 18:08You're doing it wrong. How in the world did you break
- 18:09your almost break your nose? You I I didn't have the arch
- 18:13right, So I would just kind of sit over the bar and when I
- 18:17landed my knee hit my nose. Bloody nose in the build a track
- 18:22meets like I'm, I'm, I had I retired from high jump.
- 18:26That was freshman or sophomore year.
- 18:28So that was and it was at a home meet too.
- 18:31Could you imagine? Home meet bloody nose.
- 18:34You got to walk to the back just eyes watered up because you got
- 18:37hit in the nose. Little drip was coming down like
- 18:40it's like you got into a fight. I had a track meet in your in my
- 18:45and I was small too, so my my little baggy jersey 0.
- 18:49My God, that's holy. I didn't think when you said you
- 18:51didn't arch. I'm like, OK.
- 18:52But then I was like, oh, I was like, that knee got him.
- 18:55That's what. It did.
- 18:55I could jump high. Yeah, I I just hit myself in the
- 18:59nose, man. We're starting to find out how
- 19:02you whittled down to the long triple.
- 19:03Yeah, long triple. Man like I hated the 8 and 16 I
- 19:06almost got killed in the high job so let's just keep.
- 19:10Going Oh yeah, man. I love it.
- 19:11I love it. Well, tell me about because this
- 19:13is going to be something we talked about here and later you
- 19:16said you found a private coach. So you you obviously, you know
- 19:20you work in the long the long term general your parents are
- 19:23coaching at first teaching you how to do it.
- 19:24You get into high school and you're doing it.
- 19:26You started talking about going to TCU camps a private coach.
- 19:29So this became like like even earlier you're still doing
- 19:32soccer at this early point he's frosted off years, but this
- 19:34became like a thing like you're at least like you're invested
- 19:37into it. I.
- 19:38Would say sophomore year I was, I got a little bit more serious.
- 19:45I think I did have some good private coaches.
- 19:47So now they're all college coaches.
- 19:49So it's pretty cool. Like I had that TCU when I was
- 19:54doing all the private lesson stuff that was Jeff Peters Meyer
- 19:56that's at USC and he and then when I ended up transferring
- 20:01from North Carolina to Boise State, he was the coach of Boise
- 20:05State. So I got a chance to.
- 20:07Go back and work with the coach that was doing private lesson
- 20:09stuff with me before then whenever he left and went out of
- 20:14state, I got to work with Vincent Johnson, that's at
- 20:16Nebraska now when he was a high school coach here.
- 20:20So that I had really good coaches that A at a young age.
- 20:26And again, I think I was, I was in love with the technique and
- 20:29learning why we're doing this because I was, I was still kind
- 20:32of hard headed. And I think that both of those
- 20:35two coaches kind of appreciate me being hard headed and asking
- 20:38questions. So I got a chance to, to really
- 20:41learn that was, I don't know why, I don't know why we're
- 20:44doing bleachers and it's 110° outside, but we just did this
- 20:47yesterday. And then most of the time
- 20:51they'll say just because I said so, but sometimes, but they'll
- 20:53actually take time and explain stuff to me.
- 20:55So it was, it was cool to, you know, get a chance to learn at a
- 20:59young age, too. You know, one of the things we
- 21:01have at our age is we have perspective, right?
- 21:03We have 2020, you know, behind us, right?
- 21:06When you think about during high school when you were asking
- 21:09those because because I always wonder, it's interesting
- 21:11because, you know, we spoiler alert, we know you become a
- 21:13coach, right? And so it's always interesting
- 21:15to me about like, well, what kind of athlete were you?
- 21:18And what I mean by that is like, I don't really care how good or
- 21:21not good are guest star as far as an athleticism, because that
- 21:24doesn't matter. You know, that doesn't make them
- 21:25who they are as a coach. But when I ask, you know, what
- 21:28kind of athlete were you, I always wonder like, oh, did you
- 21:31ask questions? Like when you ask questions
- 21:34about workouts, were you trying to figure out, well, why did we
- 21:36do this after we did that yesterday?
- 21:38And why aren't we doing this? Because you're like trying to
- 21:40figure it out or, you know, and this could be all excuses, by
- 21:43the way, because, you know, we're dealing with 14 to 18 year
- 21:45old kids and 14 to 18 year old versions of ourselves.
- 21:47It's like, why are we doing bleachers at 110 to this sucks,
- 21:50you know, what do we do? But knowing you become a coach
- 21:53and you were asking, it seems like you were asking almost like
- 21:57almost in the middle there. Like there was a little bit of
- 21:58like, you know, 15 year old, like what the hell are we doing
- 22:00this for? But also like, yeah, I want to
- 22:02know like, because you're talking about the technique a
- 22:03lot. Were were you, like, when you
- 22:07look back now, do you think you were curious because you really
- 22:09wanted to know, like, so that I can become better?
- 22:12Or were you, you know, again, all grace here, you're a kid.
- 22:15You're like, can I just sit around and do nothing and be
- 22:17good? Like that's what that.
- 22:17Be, I mean, I think absolutely both, but I think it was more
- 22:21curiosity. So I got remembered practices
- 22:26with like Vincent that that was at Nebraska, right?
- 22:30He, we would do a cone at, at say 12 or 13 feet and we would
- 22:36do this drill until we could progress until the next thing.
- 22:39I never understood why he's like, but you, if you can't
- 22:41handle this, how can you go faster and do this?
- 22:45So I, I feel like I got a chance to really learn from the, the
- 22:49coaches, but I, I got a chance to piece my coaching philosophy
- 22:54with things that worked for myself.
- 22:57But again, these coaches are, they're successful.
- 23:00So in, in the jump here. So I got a chance to again at a
- 23:04young age, be around them. I remember practicing with that
- 23:09TCU with like Whitney Gibson when I was a 14 year, like 1415
- 23:13year old. So national champion, NCAA
- 23:15record holder, Jonathan, what was his last name?
- 23:20Pete's going to kill me now. Jonathan, he went to TCU.
- 23:23They jumped 5556 feet. I got the practice with him like
- 23:26all the time. So there was Cleveland, like it
- 23:28was people like that, that I was a kid getting to see them
- 23:32prepare and practice and see how the coaches prepared and
- 23:34practiced. So now I feel like for me, when
- 23:37I'm in these shoes, it's it it's it's refreshing, but I feel like
- 23:41I act like just like them now. Yeah, I love that.
- 23:45Because I told you so move on. What?
- 23:49How did you as a, as you're continuing to get better and you
- 23:52know, when these private coaches and camps and stuff and you're
- 23:54at high school, you're competing for the the high school, I
- 23:57assume. How did you at that point?
- 23:59I'm going to say bridge or handle the club versus high
- 24:02school. I'm going to say tension because
- 24:05that's generally how I see it when I'm having these
- 24:07conversations. It could have been no tension at
- 24:09all where you are. How did that go for you?
- 24:12I went to a private school, so it was a little a little
- 24:15different for me. I didn't have I didn't have a
- 24:20jump coach there. And when I was coaching in the
- 24:22private school field, we had really talented kids.
- 24:25So if I know a kid is that good that you guys do whatever,
- 24:30whatever got you to where you are, don't change anything.
- 24:33Come put the jersey on, you know, and like I said, I would
- 24:35work out with the team, but I would still go do my do my jump
- 24:40practice or actually my jump coach would come up there.
- 24:43So he practiced at Cedar Hill High School.
- 24:45I went to Charity Christian in Cedar Hill so he would just come
- 24:4810 minutes down the road after he finished his school practice
- 24:51and then practice with me right after practice.
- 24:54So, so you had kind of a almost a natural setup that allowed and
- 24:58maybe even encouraged for our talented athletes.
- 25:00Yeah. OK, that makes sense.
- 25:01That is not always the case, as you know, because you know that.
- 25:04So yeah, OK, as you you start transitioning sophomore junior
- 25:09year from the soccer player who's doing track now as we get
- 25:12to junior senior now it sounds like you're a track athlete who
- 25:17plays or did you even play your senior year soccer?
- 25:20I played school but it wasn't very school.
- 25:24School was easier like. Was that hard?
- 25:27I always wonder because, you know, your identity was, was
- 25:30wrapped into soccer for a long time and then you progressed to
- 25:34where your identity starts kind of switching like, oh, I'm a
- 25:36track athlete. Was that hard to to kind of put
- 25:39soccer to the back? I mean, what's crazy is I like
- 25:45to this day my kids play soccer. I watch I watch soccer more than
- 25:49I watch track is. That right?
- 25:50Yeah. Yeah, I watch.
- 25:51A lot of soccer games, probably every day, every league.
- 25:55So I think it's still for me, it's still relaxing to watch the
- 26:00soccer game. I don't know for everybody else,
- 26:01they rest my fall asleep watching it.
- 26:02But I I do enjoy a good soccer game.
- 26:06But it, it did take me a while to transition, but I think the
- 26:11things that helped me, well, I guess we're the the team part of
- 26:14it, especially when I got to college, you know, it was you
- 26:18get a chance to really help a team win a championship.
- 26:22So that I think a camaraderie with, I guess with everybody,
- 26:28one common goal it was, it was pretty cool.
- 26:31And I think that that's kind of what helped the transition to
- 26:33make it a little easier. So running relays, running on
- 26:35the four by four and all that stuff, it helps out a little
- 26:40bit. Yeah, for sure.
- 26:41I think, you know, we we lose that sometimes with track
- 26:43because we think of it as an individual sport.
- 26:46But at the I always say at the beginning to the end of the day,
- 26:48it's still a team sport. They're still whether at the
- 26:51high school going for state titles, conference titles,
- 26:53college going for conference national titles.
- 26:56You know, once you get to the pros, maybe it's a little
- 26:57different, although they're still, but guess what, the most
- 26:59popular. Teams.
- 27:00Yeah, the most popular track meet is still the Olympics,
- 27:02which is Team USA, by the way. So yeah.
- 27:04But me and and Vance, Texas track dad, we we get into it all
- 27:09the time. He's like, it's individual.
- 27:10I'm like, it's not. I was like, it's made-up of
- 27:12individuals stuff. It is.
- 27:14It's a team, man. It's a team.
- 27:15And I think even the, the training groups that are put
- 27:17together like that's, that's a team that's right.
- 27:20So it's a if, if everybody's on the same page, pushing towards
- 27:24the same goal, it creates negative energy in the, in the
- 27:28training space. So I, I don't, I, I think it's
- 27:30the teams. For all I know, it's individual.
- 27:33A lot of my kids aren't even on the team.
- 27:35They're they compete unattached and but we all train together.
- 27:38We're all trying to jump far, run fast, or.
- 27:40The the best example, like I think that I gave Vance and
- 27:44everybody else was, you know, this is a very common story
- 27:47using a quarter Miller, 4x4 1/4 Miller who runs 50 seconds and
- 27:51they open every single open. But when they get on the 4 by 14
- 27:54splits, 48 point or 49 point, it's like, why in the world do
- 27:58they run faster? And I know it splits and all
- 28:00that, but you know, why do they run faster?
- 28:01And it's like, oh, because they have someone they're beholding
- 28:03to, they have to either get that baton or get like they're
- 28:06they're now running for the school name the team, not not
- 28:09themselves. I was like, that's a very common
- 28:12thing. People run faster to relay.
- 28:13I was like, to me, that proves like, oh, it's a team.
- 28:15In fact, maybe that's what track should it be is all all relays,
- 28:18to be honest with you that maybe that changes how we actually get
- 28:20people to our meets and stuff. I don't know.
- 28:22And. Maybe a little disappointment
- 28:24too. I think as humans we might be OK
- 28:27letting ourselves down sometimes, but letting some,
- 28:30letting mom or dad or this person down that's, you know,
- 28:36it's a little harder to to deal with sometimes, I think.
- 28:38I agree. I think that's a, that's a great
- 28:40point. OK, senior year, you're now a
- 28:43track guy, you know, you're still, you know, trying to
- 28:46figure out why you're doing bleachers, 110° heat, but that's
- 28:48called Texas. That's every day.
- 28:51Talk to us about what you were thinking about going to college.
- 28:53And really what I like to know is I haven't necessarily heard
- 28:58that like, oh, I'm going to become a track coach.
- 28:59Like what were you thinking as like an 18 year old?
- 29:01I'm going to go major in law and become a lawyer.
- 29:04I'm going to go major in engineering.
- 29:05What were you thinking about becoming as an adult?
- 29:11I'm laughing because, well, when I started off with U.S.
- 29:15Marine biology. Nice.
- 29:17I knew it. That's just what I love, because
- 29:18most people as 18 year olds don't know they're going to
- 29:21become a track coaches. So they got these all these
- 29:23other dreams, Marine. But first of all, you're in
- 29:26Texas. Well, you know, I exclude
- 29:28Houston, Galveston, all that stuff.
- 29:30Why? Why that?
- 29:32As an 18, why were you thinking marine biology?
- 29:34Because I, I don't know, I just thought it would be interesting,
- 29:38probably make a lot of money going into my senior year or
- 29:43because after I graduated, before I went to my freshman
- 29:45year, I took a deep sea fishing trip.
- 29:49I was the most seasick person on the boat.
- 29:52So I probably said this is probably isn't the what I need
- 29:55to to be studying so. That's got to be a prereq.
- 29:59You got to be on a boat, right? I mean it.
- 30:01Has to be. So I end up signing up for the
- 30:04class deal at North Carolina when I got there and no, I end
- 30:09up switching started kinesiology.
- 30:10Kinesiology. OK, so why?
- 30:13Why'd you choose North Carolina at high school?
- 30:15That seems far. That's far away, man.
- 30:18'Cause I met, took a few visits out of high school.
- 30:21I went to Boston University first with Coles Johnson.
- 30:25That's at Cal Berkeley now. She was there.
- 30:28So that. Robin.
- 30:29Yeah. Robin.
- 30:29Yeah. So that was my first college
- 30:31visit. Then I went to Texas A&M with
- 30:36Coach Van out again, that's in Houston now.
- 30:40Then I went to North Carolina. I just like the as Austin Davis
- 30:46that's at OU now that's he was one of my teammates there so.
- 30:50Oh, that's right, yeah. So for me, I wanted to, again, I
- 30:53think learning, right, I didn't want to go to a program where I
- 30:58was necessarily the best person. And I, I think a few of the
- 31:02visits that I took, I might have been the best person.
- 31:04A&M, they had some really, really good people.
- 31:06And I probably got afraid of that.
- 31:09Like North Carolina. 'S not kind of a middle, yeah,
- 31:12yeah, as I say, because I was like, I don't think he would
- 31:14have been a Texas A&M because Jimmy V had them rolling, baby.
- 31:16Yeah, and I, I took a visit there and that's when they were
- 31:19all graduating. And I end up choosing North
- 31:23Carolina, but just because of, you know, Austin and another
- 31:27team teammate, Ed, he was another 25 foot long jumper.
- 31:31So I had a chance to learn from a 54 foot triple jumper and a,
- 31:35you know, another, another good long jumper.
- 31:39So I think it was, it was good for me to, you know, get away
- 31:42from Texas. It's it's, you know, some kids I
- 31:45think are a little different for me.
- 31:46I wanted to get out and, you know, see the world a little
- 31:50bit. It was it was cool seeing
- 31:51mountains and different stuff coming from Texas and city life.
- 31:56Yeah, it's a beautiful campus, beautiful area.
- 31:58I mean, you could you could have picked a lot worse places as far
- 32:01as looks and the program and the ACC and teammates.
- 32:05I love that you told me this before, but Austin being your
- 32:09your teammate there, I forgot about that.
- 32:10That's pretty cool. That's pretty cool.
- 32:12So you go there and they're thinking marine biology, like,
- 32:15Yep, that's that's not going to work out.
- 32:16So kinesiology, which that makes a ton of sense.
- 32:20Right. Yeah.
- 32:22So, yeah, so I started there my sophomore year.
- 32:26I end up transferring back then we didn't have the transfer
- 32:30portal. So I had to go to the JUCO 4th
- 32:32semester, get my associates and then is that.
- 32:34Right. Yeah, Actually moved down to
- 32:37A&M. So I was going to go, I was
- 32:39going to go there. I went to a little JUCO where
- 32:43Cam Newton went blend college. 4th semester.
- 32:46Yeah, so I went there 4th semester, living in College
- 32:48Station, training, competing unattached in that semester, and
- 32:52then Petersmeyer end up calling me and I, you know, ended up
- 32:56going to Boise. So two things that always one
- 33:00that cracks me up and another I'm going to question you on it
- 33:02always cracks me up. And you're not necessarily this
- 33:05type of person, but in, in general, you know, we are, we
- 33:08are railing on the, the transfer portal, right?
- 33:10And you know, and we act like it's brand new.
- 33:13And so I love when I get people on here and they're like, and
- 33:15then I transfer, I'm like, Oh my God, you transferred before
- 33:17there was a transfer. Like it happened before people.
- 33:19This is not you. Maybe it's easier, I don't know
- 33:22and I don't care. It's a lot easier.
- 33:23But people have been transferring from long before
- 33:27the transfer portal. I just thought that was funny
- 33:29when you said that too. You said because you said Cam
- 33:33Newton, you said Glenn College, like maybe you don't know the
- 33:36history of Blenn College. They have a, they have a crazy
- 33:39track. Program OK all right because you
- 33:42initiated with Cam Newton not going you know former world
- 33:45class beaters Blenn junior college yeah OK all right just
- 33:48wanted to make. Sure, they had a track program
- 33:50back in the day. Oh yeah, but way before, I mean
- 33:52before me. So definitely before you.
- 33:54But yeah, they were my understanding understanding
- 33:56because I I coached JUCO during the Barton County was the I
- 34:01mean, they would win nationals by 100 points.
- 34:04Lance problem was the coach there is amazing.
- 34:06And I was always told that as good as Barton was during my
- 34:10time, blend would have beat the brakes out of them.
- 34:13Like that's how good blend was. And that's no shade on Barton
- 34:16because they were amazing. But they blend just like I think
- 34:19at one point I heard you always wonder like how much is lore and
- 34:22actually truth. At one point they had three.
- 34:26These are JUCO. So these are all frosted off
- 34:27kids, 3 discus throwers all over 200 feet and I was like these.
- 34:32What do you mean three of them Like 1 would be an amazing.
- 34:36Yeah, I think for, I mean, Blinn, it was, it's two hours
- 34:39from Dallas and Houston. I mean, South Plains is one of
- 34:42the bigger programs in Texas for as far as Juco's go, but they're
- 34:475-6 hours from every major city coming this way.
- 34:52I think back then that would have been a hot spot.
- 34:54Yeah, yeah. That and Odessa was was big and
- 34:58kind of coming back too. And that's, you know, Blinn.
- 35:01I believe that's where Pat Henry coach.
- 35:02I believe that's where Dennis Shaver coached.
- 35:04I mean, there was a lot of a lot of coaches that we, you know,
- 35:07rightfully Revere today and they were in little old Blinn Junior
- 35:11College. So you go to Blinn thinking
- 35:13that, all right, I'm gonna go to A&M, I'll come back and go to
- 35:15A&M. And then Petersmeyer, who I
- 35:17mean, I just love this this web of track and field dude.
- 35:21Like, you know, this this private coach that you're a
- 35:24coach working with TCU and then he goes to Boise Estate and it's
- 35:27like, well, why don't you come to Boise Estate now?
- 35:29What did you think? Now, maybe he didn't have that
- 35:31much of a problem because you did go from Texas all the way to
- 35:34Chapel Hill, for crying out loud.
- 35:35But Boise's a whole nother. I mean, that's a whole nother
- 35:38zip code, man. What do you think about going up
- 35:39there? It was for me, it happened
- 35:44quick. I, I think it was around, I
- 35:47guess August when I was finishing up my associate's
- 35:49degree and had to get out. So yeah, they, it was, it was,
- 35:55it was pretty quick, but it was, I love Boise, man.
- 35:57It was, it's beautiful city. And again, for me, I've never
- 36:01seen mountains. So whenever you get to Boise and
- 36:06you get to see all the mountains and my apartment was on a, on
- 36:10the, on the Greenbelt. So you get to see this river
- 36:13every day, walk, ride your bike a mile down the down the river
- 36:18every day with these nice trees and mountains and scenery to go
- 36:21to your class. That yes, it was it was nice to
- 36:25me. I mean, it was an easy
- 36:26transition. Had a bunch of teammates that I
- 36:29still talk to to this day and and I had a really, really good
- 36:33time there. I did.
- 36:34What year did you go there? It was ten, 2010 to 12.
- 36:40So what, they hosted nationals one year?
- 36:43Was that before you or during? No.
- 36:44It was during it was my first year there.
- 36:47OK, yeah, because I've, I've gone out there before.
- 36:49I've gone out there a couple times, but I remember a national
- 36:52out there. That's right.
- 36:54That place was out there. Oh, you had?
- 36:56To. Drive.
- 36:57Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That was that was out there
- 37:02still studying kinesiology. Man, no.
- 37:07OK. Yeah.
- 37:08So as you know, you have to stay on track with your degree so.
- 37:12Funny to be like. No, yeah.
- 37:15So you have to stay on track with your degree, right?
- 37:17So North Carolina starts kinesiology classes junior year,
- 37:21Boise starts in freshman year. So I was doing basics and
- 37:25getting all that stuff knocked out.
- 37:27So a lot of the stuff that they were taking, I was so far
- 37:30behind. So I end up going to social
- 37:32science. So sociology and history focus
- 37:37was cool, using a little bit of sociology to see how people work
- 37:41and how everything goes. I see a lot of the stuff that we
- 37:46went over in class and some of the kids and the parents and
- 37:49just this little stuff. Right.
- 37:53Yeah. You know, it's interesting.
- 37:54I understand. This just kind of made me think
- 37:56about, you know, you, you probably would have been and
- 38:01knowing that you go on to become very successful.
- 38:03So this is a little tough to say this, but like you would have
- 38:05probably better served to be a kinesiology major.
- 38:08But because of the rules of progress towards degree and and
- 38:13interestingly, how 2 schools do it completely different that
- 38:17that tripped you up. And so you had to go to this
- 38:20social science type of like it just, it just to me, that kind
- 38:26of just shows a little bit how the educational system is
- 38:28broken. And maybe specifically as it
- 38:30relates to athletics, Like, like, first of all, I can't
- 38:33believe, you know, in our society, we we kind of force 18
- 38:36year olds to pick a major that is going to affect the rest of
- 38:39their life. Like, you know, you're 18, what
- 38:41do you know? You think you want to be a
- 38:42marine biologist and you can't even stand being on boats, for
- 38:44crying out loud. Like you, you should have some
- 38:46experience in this world maybe before you pick something that's
- 38:48going to affect the rest of your life.
- 38:50And then you get into maybe something you, you probably were
- 38:53more destined to be kinesiology. And then because these two
- 38:55schools, there's no standardization of schools, you
- 38:58have to like again, I know, I understand the, the, the idea
- 39:02of, you know, progress towards a degree.
- 39:04I get that. But then I'm like, well, this
- 39:05kind of kind of actually worked against the kid trying to be
- 39:10academically, you know, inclined.
- 39:11So that's interesting. I mean, I did have to especially
- 39:15now do a lot of research on different energy systems and all
- 39:19this all the other XS and OS look, fun stuff.
- 39:24I know you know, Maurice Hutton that you talked to on the
- 39:27podcast, Man, he, this guy bugs me all the time about different
- 39:31workouts and how I set this up wrong because of my energy
- 39:34systems that I used on this day. So so like this is going through
- 39:39and and again, I'm not I'm not a coach that says I you know, I
- 39:43know everything. I I call and ask a a lot of
- 39:46people different questions. What is what he would you do on
- 39:48this? What is again, why?
- 39:51So just trying to figure out stuff as I as I go.
- 39:55I'm still pretty young in this coaching game, I think.
- 40:00So as you are finishing out your last couple years there at
- 40:02Boise, getting the social science, social work kind of
- 40:07degree it is, is coaching in your mind at all as you're
- 40:11working towards your degree? A little bit my brother was
- 40:18actually graduating my my younger brother, he was a
- 40:20freshman in high school, so I would dabble into writing a
- 40:26little workouts. I wasn't always the most healthy
- 40:29athlete, so partially tore a knee one year back was a little
- 40:34beat up. So I got the spend some time
- 40:37with Pete again, coach and learn wise and how he wrote his
- 40:41workouts and and go through some of that and kind of, I want to
- 40:46say writing my own. But especially like when when I
- 40:49was transferring and doing the JUCO thing by myself, I had to
- 40:52write my workouts. Glenn didn't have a track team,
- 40:55so I was taking classes there, but I was competing unattached
- 40:58and writing my own workouts and doing all that stuff.
- 41:01So I think that was my first, I guess taste of doing all that
- 41:06stuff and it was. That's interesting because
- 41:09you're definitely at that point in age in a stage where you had
- 41:11no right to be right in your own workouts, meaning like you're
- 41:16ready to be a coach, but you did what you had to do.
- 41:18I get that. Do you like what was that
- 41:21experience like? Was there frustration of like
- 41:23having to write your own workouts or was there and
- 41:26looking back knowing because you know what like real level
- 41:28workout is? Because I always wonder
- 41:30sometimes like, how can you bring the intensity that you
- 41:33need to bring to some workouts without a coach there?
- 41:35So you thought you were working hard, but I was like, oh,
- 41:37really? Let's kind of take it easy
- 41:38because I take it easy on myself.
- 41:39I love myself more than anybody. When you look back, what was
- 41:42that experience? You know, I'm going to say I'm
- 41:43going to do air quotes coaching yourself.
- 41:45I think the intensity, like you said, you can't replicate.
- 41:51Again. For me, I wasn't fast.
- 41:53I must say I wasn't fast, but I was a 10/10/90.
- 41:56I ran 1099. Me and my coach jumped up and
- 41:58down like I was Usain Bolt. We ran around, I'm a 10 second
- 42:02100m. Guy yeah, that's that's how I
- 42:04was like we and we. So when we did that, you know,
- 42:11it's ah, man, I don't know. Yeah, how do you Not that Coach
- 42:18needs to be there to yell at you and all that, but but Coach
- 42:20knows the right words to say, knows the right.
- 42:23I think it's the intensity. I always had somebody to record
- 42:26and look at videos. You know, I wasn't I, I, you
- 42:33know, big friends that are jumpers.
- 42:35So, you know, I, I got a chance to talk to Marquis Goodwin and
- 42:38Democratic, some of these guys. So we had shared videos and
- 42:42stuff they say with you know what they thought about stuff,
- 42:44but it wasn't, I think it was the intensity in the training
- 42:47group for me, for me that was lacking.
- 42:50It is hard to lift heavyweight by yourself.
- 42:54Yeah, that's right. Yeah.
- 42:55It's hard to do 8 one 50s if we had that or something correct.
- 43:00Like, it's hard to push yourself to that limit when you're
- 43:02already not the top guy. Yeah, you know, if you were.
- 43:07Yeah, I work I work out like 8150 actually.
- 43:09That's a great example because maybe you could handle, you
- 43:11know, four or five reps at whatever, you know, time you
- 43:14need to hit, but it's hard to push yourself on Rep 6-7 and
- 43:17eight. Absolutely.
- 43:18And that's kind of your money, right?
- 43:19You got to hit all 8. If that's the you know, yeah,
- 43:21that makes that makes a lot of sense.
- 43:24OK, finishing out Boise, you you had done some coach.
- 43:28Well, you know, we'll loosely call the coaching at blend
- 43:30yourself, but you know, you did some things with your brother
- 43:32and stuff like that. You get your degree, what do we
- 43:35do? We got to get a job or.
- 43:37Yeah, I saw. I actually moved back to Dallas,
- 43:40graduate in December and moved back to Dallas and you know, you
- 43:43went to my to the facility. So you got the chance to see my
- 43:46mom's and my family's truck driving school or the school
- 43:50that is about. So as you know, truck driving,
- 43:53welding, different trades, cosmetology, Barber classes.
- 43:58I actually started working there doing all their a lot of
- 44:02recruiting stuff, going to job fairs, little high school career
- 44:06days. We do a lot of work with people
- 44:09that are recently like released from prisons and stuff.
- 44:12So I go to speak at parole meetings and do some recruiting
- 44:16for the school. I did that.
- 44:19I mean I still work with doing some of the recruiting and so
- 44:22Facebook ads and all that stuff. But it was I started with that
- 44:28and then culture. Orlando McDaniel, he was an old
- 44:33club coach out here that passed away during COVID.
- 44:36He had a club to North Texas, Cheetahs.
- 44:40So he happened. His daughter went to the same
- 44:43school as my brother. And they were walking through
- 44:47the hallway. He's like, hey, man, you know
- 44:48your brother graduate already. Tell him to call me.
- 44:51I got this girl. I think it's going to be pretty
- 44:53good. And it would.
- 44:54The girl was Jasmine Moore. Shut up.
- 44:58So I. Was.
- 45:00Yeah, so that was around March. I was already working for two
- 45:02months back home. I wasn't coaching and I got AI
- 45:08guess the first kids that I got was my brother and then just
- 45:12working with. I wasn't even coaching at the
- 45:13school. Yeah, I was just coaching my
- 45:14brother when I graduated. And then Jasmine and a couple of
- 45:19other kids that kind of came out and they're all graduated
- 45:22college now and old. Bro I mean that that I'm I'm the
- 45:30floored cause to have that caliber in an athlete from the
- 45:34jump. Literally the jump.
- 45:37That was my forsake. Like my I'm calling my brother
- 45:40my. 1st that's. My first or second kid, you
- 45:42know? I mean, there there are coaches
- 45:45who go decades and don't have a a talent like Jasmine Moore.
- 45:49So what do you do? You, you, He says.
- 45:52Hey, I got this girl's gonna be pretty good.
- 45:55So. So you should work with her.
- 45:56You know, you and your brother, do you have any idea what to do?
- 46:00Like, like how good was she? Did you realize how good she
- 46:04was? And then how did you start
- 46:06trying to develop her? And you know nothing at this
- 46:08point, honestly, I say nothing. You've had some good examples.
- 46:11That's not fair. But you haven't coached like a
- 46:13full year macro cycle of someone.
- 46:15Right. I haven't.
- 46:16So I don't have the, I guess the coaching experience.
- 46:18So for me that was fun. It was more of a let's do what
- 46:22we did in college and kind of plugging in workouts, but not
- 46:25knowing why and when and where, right.
- 46:29But for her it was, I mean, I think very, very early, like her
- 46:34first track meet, she jumped from a 36 foot warden triple as
- 46:38a 8th grader her within a week of learning how to triple.
- 46:42So her first meet she went like 37 feet.
- 46:45And I don't know if you met her dad, but he Earl's a very he's
- 46:50an involved dad. So he'll he's a hey man, I'm
- 46:55seeing this video. Jasmine jumped 38 six.
- 46:58Is that good? And I'm like, dude, that's the
- 47:00national record for a 14 year old.
- 47:02Is that good? What do you mean?
- 47:03And mind you, she's landing sideways with two feet, like all
- 47:07the way twisted. So it was, I'm like, man, she
- 47:11just learned how to triple jump seven days ago.
- 47:13And you're telling me she jumped the national record asking me if
- 47:15it's good? I'm like, did they measure
- 47:16wrong? I'm I'm not believing it.
- 47:20And then by the end of that summer 8th grade year, she went
- 47:23like 19-7 and 40 feet 5. Six way.
- 47:28Yeah, so it was. We you know, we've had several
- 47:33coaches who have had you know, I don't want to overstate
- 47:37sometimes when I say generational athlete.
- 47:39That's probably not fair for Jasmine.
- 47:40She's amazing wave. You know, generational is just a
- 47:44whole another like, you know, maybe Mondo right now is a
- 47:46generational athlete, right, But you definitely have an athlete
- 47:51who, you know, obviously stupid good, you know, medalist, all
- 47:55this kind of stuff, right, record holders at that age.
- 47:59Is it more about like when you think again, we have hindsight,
- 48:02you can look back to it now and you've you've worked with a lot
- 48:05of other great athletes. So you now have a a cadre of
- 48:07people to compare and contrast. When you look back at her as
- 48:10like an eighth grader, is it is it more of just like she had the
- 48:16God-given talent earlier than some?
- 48:19And so she's just more athletic and that's why she's able to do
- 48:21something because obviously she had to, you know, things that
- 48:23have changed from being a 38 foot triple jumper to being a 46
- 48:26foot triple jump. Like like she had to get, she
- 48:28had to work towards that. But did she have more immediate
- 48:31talent, younger or or what? Both.
- 48:36I mean for her the mom was a 21 plus long jumper.
- 48:40A short. State Dad was a hurdler at
- 48:43Western Michigan and he's, you know, 6566 so.
- 48:47OK. OK.
- 48:48So, so you can't be, you can't be genetics.
- 48:50Can't can't be genetics one, but man, she she really was.
- 48:57So he's like as her background was a competitive gym,
- 49:00competitive cheerleader. So in gymnastics.
- 49:03So I think a lot of my best kids are gymnasts and they come from
- 49:07that background where they're used to being getting critique
- 49:10right. So for her, she's a
- 49:13perfectionist like she's I think so yes, she was talented early.
- 49:19But if you talk to Nick at Florida right now, he'll say the
- 49:23same thing. Like she's driving me through
- 49:24the wall. Like she is a, if something's
- 49:27not perfect for her, even at a very young age, she was like
- 49:31that. So I think that's the that's the
- 49:34difference between her, you know, being a 4445 foot girl or
- 49:40the American record holder. And I got to go back to it.
- 49:43She is a phenom, though. I believe in my eyes, Jasmine is
- 49:47a phenom just because she's had the 1314 record, freshman,
- 49:50sophomore, junior high school national record, she's #2U20 all
- 49:56time American record holder. She's it's hard for kids that
- 50:01are that talented early like Mondo and Jasmine and I was even
- 50:05she carries like it's hard for them to progress and, and keep
- 50:10progressing. So I think for them, they are
- 50:12phenoms. There's, there's only, there's
- 50:14very, very, very few of those kids that have been good for
- 50:18like sitting in the glove like they've been good for this many
- 50:21years. It doesn't happen like that.
- 50:22Yeah, look, I'm not taking anything away from her.
- 50:24Do not stick her dad on me. I am not.
- 50:26Saying. Anything bad about Jasmine
- 50:28Moore? Trust me, OK?
- 50:30Trust me. No.
- 50:30No, I just want to like she is. Yeah, I think she's that way
- 50:34because she is a perfectionist. Yeah, I do.
- 50:37First of all, to to harp on that point.
- 50:40I think it's interesting you said, you know, genetically, but
- 50:42what I'm hearing also is that she's very coachable.
- 50:44So when she's like, like and driven, like maybe that's the
- 50:47third, maybe that's the triangle.
- 50:48You got to be coachable, driven and you got to have the genetic
- 50:51talent to it to where she was like, OK, I'm pretty good, but
- 50:54OK, how do I get better? What do I get to get better?
- 50:57How do I get better? Yeah, that's, that's that's
- 50:58probably something that's missing in some athletes.
- 51:01One of those 3 is missing to make the the lead to become
- 51:04actually, you know, nationally good.
- 51:06Yeah, I think, I mean, she made me a better coach.
- 51:09I was AI was, you know, I'll say a kid, but I was a young, I was
- 51:13a young 242526 year old. And I just remember like one
- 51:18time we were at nationals for in New York, she said I want to
- 51:22jump. It's her junior year said I want
- 51:23to jump 44 feet. I want to jump 44 feet.
- 51:26I want to jump 44 feet. And for me, that's crazy, right?
- 51:28So yeah. There's a lot of junior boys
- 51:31that want to jump 44 feet. She jumped 4311 3/4.
- 51:38Guess who's outside crying in the snow?
- 51:41No. Wow.
- 51:43Crying we had like we're having to bring her inside.
- 51:46She doesn't want to get her medal, doesn't want to do
- 51:47interviews. And and that day she was it was
- 51:52just a, you know, for me, I was, I'm always, you know, glass half
- 51:57full, not have you know, we're almost there.
- 52:00We're almost there. 44 you're yeah, you hit the board perfect.
- 52:02We jump 44. Yeah.
- 52:04She told me my goal was to jump 44.
- 52:07As a coach, your job is to get me there.
- 52:10Wow. And she's a kid that told me.
- 52:12That, yeah, yeah, right. So for me now it's when I talk
- 52:17to kids and go through all this process, I'm like, what do you
- 52:21want out of this? Because I can, I can, I can get
- 52:24a kid to jumping 4344, whatever, 2520, whatever it may be.
- 52:30Are you willing to put the work in, or are we going to do it
- 52:32together? Right, right.
- 52:34Yeah. Wow, man.
- 52:36You know, that to me is probably a part of the definition of
- 52:40generational or phenom. Is that self drive even at such
- 52:44a young age? Like there's a little bit of
- 52:46audacity of her at that age to say to you, and I know you're
- 52:50young and as a coach too, and that probably maybe that played
- 52:52into it. But for her to say, Hey, my job
- 52:54was a jump 44. Your job is to get me there.
- 52:56Like that's a there's a little bit of audacity.
- 52:59And maybe it would be audacity if she didn't also put the work
- 53:02in. But if it's like, oh she is
- 53:03putting in the work, I guess I better.
- 53:04But it's a, it's a trust though, like I think.
- 53:06Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 53:08I, I'm big on like we'll go to war with each other.
- 53:11Like if I'm sitting out here in the rain for this workout, you
- 53:14are too. If I'm sitting out in 110°, you
- 53:17know, we're going through all these things together.
- 53:19So I think she was she was very, very serious about that.
- 53:25And it was cool seeing the the growth the next that was kind of
- 53:28her turning point of all right, we're going to go to the
- 53:31Olympics in college twice. Like that was the the goal.
- 53:36Now, having such a good athlete early in your career, there's a
- 53:39lot of different avenues you could have taken.
- 53:42Like 11 could have been like, hey man, I'm a pretty good
- 53:44coach. Look what look what's happening
- 53:46out there. Another Ave. is some insecurity
- 53:50of like, oh, am I good enough to coach this person?
- 53:53How did you evolve as a coach? Because something you stated is
- 53:57is you know, this is episode. I don't even know 338 or 339.
- 54:02So then 300 plus of these right, and maybe no one has talked to
- 54:05more coaches in depth than this guy right here, right.
- 54:08So there's a lot of uniqueness in people's hats to where they
- 54:13are today. But one of the commonalities is
- 54:17when we first get into coaching, whether regardless of how good
- 54:21of an athlete or not we were, regardless how good of a coach
- 54:24or program we had or did not have, when we first get into
- 54:27coaching, we typically coach how we were coached.
- 54:31That's all we know, all we know, that's all we know.
- 54:34And you mentioned that you're like, man, you know, I knew how
- 54:35Jeff did it and that's how I coached.
- 54:40But as we coach, we generally evolve and that's no dis to how
- 54:45we were because first of all, we're only remembering what we
- 54:47remember what what that coach actually coaches.
- 54:49But there's probably a million other things that we just forgot
- 54:51because we were kids, for crying out loud, right?
- 54:53But we we evolved through a coaching education, formal
- 54:56education or informal peer-to-peer, things like that.
- 55:00As you're going through this journey with her, what are you
- 55:03doing coaching education wise? Are you talking to more coaches
- 55:07in a little bit different language than you would as an
- 55:09athlete? Like what do you mean by that?
- 55:10Like you're asking a little deeper questions.
- 55:12Are you doing any kind of formal coaching?
- 55:13What are what are you doing to to evolve with her?
- 55:16I think for me, I got especially just because I have so many kids
- 55:21year after year, I get a chance to talk to a lot of college
- 55:24coaches the same way you do. I think I have hundreds of jump
- 55:28coaches in my phone. So for me, there's certain
- 55:32coaches that I just nerd out with all the time.
- 55:34You know, I, I think I've, I've done a few coaches educations.
- 55:40I've done all the Texas ones. Of course, Louisiana, I went to
- 55:43the USTTFC A1. I'm going to go to the one in
- 55:47Dallas this year. That's right.
- 55:49Yeah, but especially during COVID, I think that was kind of,
- 55:53you know, first year facility. That's when we got to do, you
- 55:56know, the little Zoom calls every.
- 55:59So I got a chance to really learn and sit down and talk to a
- 56:03bunch of coaches and you know, we're going through testing and
- 56:07stuff now. So it's, it's cool to see what I
- 56:10test on versus what other coaches test on and right versus
- 56:14some of the old school coaches. We don't do any of that stuff.
- 56:16We're not. What a so how did the facility
- 56:22come about? Like how did it, how did jump
- 56:24smart? What?
- 56:24What came first Facility or Jump Smart and how did that all come?
- 56:27About I guess Jump Smart was the nonprofit that started first
- 56:32facility wise. I started I guess a few months
- 56:36before COVID unfortunately. Good timing.
- 56:39Great timing to open a gym. So I got set up four months
- 56:44before COVID. In Texas, it was a good time.
- 56:47I don't know. Yeah, so I guess facility came
- 56:51first, but I got a chance. I think for me, I was kind of
- 56:55torn between wanting to jump into the college game or or
- 57:02staying and doing the private coaching and kind of taking this
- 57:06a little bit more serious. I didn't have kids or anything
- 57:09yet, so it was cool to kind of, I don't know, for me, I guess I
- 57:15wanted to, I want to help as many people as I can without my
- 57:19job being on the line for a kid necessarily jumping far or not.
- 57:23You know what, I appreciate a college job maybe sometime, but
- 57:29for me, I feel like I give more impact getting hundreds of kids
- 57:33to college and getting a chance to for always camps and track
- 57:36meets that we do and all the college coaches that come out.
- 57:39I think that's that came first. And I just remember talking to a
- 57:44few college coaches about it. And I remember I was about to
- 57:48have my first son and I was talking to coach Kareem at UTSA
- 57:53and he said, man, you want to go to the soccer game?
- 57:56Do you want to see the dance recital?
- 57:59Do you want to see the football game?
- 58:03Do you want to, do you want to make sure you don't miss a
- 58:05birthday? And for me, that was the, that
- 58:10was the deciding factor. And I, I just, I didn't want to
- 58:14miss that early so. I, I was in a big time trying to
- 58:22watch this as much as possible. I was in, I was in a coach's
- 58:25office that many all coaches would aspire to be have the type
- 58:32of career this person has has had now now retired.
- 58:37This is before they had retired and I was in their office and
- 58:41was like, so when like, you know, you're getting close, how
- 58:44much longer you think you're going, you know, and they were
- 58:46like, you know, I need to retire sooner than later.
- 58:51And I was like, Oh, what, you know what?
- 58:53That was just kind of an odd way maybe of saying it.
- 58:55And they said, you know, I owe my spouse.
- 58:57I've never got to see my children.
- 58:59My my children ran track. I never got to see a, a track
- 59:02meet. You know, we, we got married
- 59:05during track season. So never got to really do a a
- 59:09anniversaries and stuff like, and they were like, I need to
- 59:12retire so that before I get too old, before I, you know, if I'm
- 59:15infirmed that I can take my spouse and make up for my career
- 59:20and I and you can just see the regret in their eye.
- 59:24And I, it's it bummed me out. It made me so sad because it was
- 59:27like, oh man, the sacrifices the family had to make for this
- 59:31person's career. And and you know, that is not a
- 59:34story unique to track and field high.
- 59:36I don't even say high level CE OS, but you know, CE OS teacher.
- 59:39I mean, there are other professions.
- 59:41Let's let's be real here. Doesn't make it right, by the
- 59:43way. And it's funny when I would, you
- 59:46know, for a long time I taught USATF level 1 courses, probably
- 59:50taught about 30 in my career. And the number one question I
- 59:54would get is a high school, because I started coaching high
- 59:57school before I coached to college.
- 59:58I would get a high school coach going, hey, so how do I, how do
- 1:00:01I coach college? Like what you know, what steps
- 1:00:03do I need to take? And I was like, maybe you don't.
- 1:00:05Like, you know, both professions are great.
- 1:00:07By the way, you might have a bigger impact than more people
- 1:00:10on the high school side. Oh, and by the way, you might
- 1:00:12make more money, by the way. Oh, and you're probably more
- 1:00:15stable. You like moving around all over
- 1:00:18the place because unfortunately, when you know something
- 1:00:21happened, it could be not even your fault.
- 1:00:22And you don't get your contract renewed.
- 1:00:24The head coach doesn't get renewed.
- 1:00:25You don't get renewed. And there is, depending on where
- 1:00:28you are, there is no other university.
- 1:00:29You got to go somewhere else for that opportunity.
- 1:00:32You know, it's like it's not necessarily all it's cooked up
- 1:00:35to be. And guys like Cream and others,
- 1:00:38especially a guy like that, he makes a lot of effort with his
- 1:00:41spouse and family, for crying out loud.
- 1:00:43You know, a lot of it could just do, but it's not the glory that
- 1:00:49we assume just because it's just because we watch it on Saturday
- 1:00:52and college football Saturday. We see the pomp and
- 1:00:54circumstance. It's not necessarily that as a
- 1:00:57career actually being in and on it so.
- 1:01:00And I love this so far. Now just we had my two sons had
- 1:01:05football games Saturday and I got to go to a soccer game
- 1:01:07Sunday. It's it's cool that I get to see
- 1:01:12them warm up or do like the pregame handshakes or something.
- 1:01:16I don't have to get missed that little stuff, you know?
- 1:01:18Yeah. And so, you know, how many track
- 1:01:20coaches hosted recruits this weekend and so did not get to go
- 1:01:24to their kids soccer games and stuff?
- 1:01:26Do you know how many track coaches were on the road doing
- 1:01:29home visits this weekend? Didn't get to, I mean, how many
- 1:01:33distance coaches were at cross country?
- 1:01:35I mean, it's yeah. And not 100%.
- 1:01:37I'm not saying that. I'm just saying, whoa, it is
- 1:01:40not. I guess the veneer I always
- 1:01:43tried to take off was it's not shiny, it's a job.
- 1:01:46And that means there's gonna be sacrifices, by the way, just
- 1:01:49like there's sacrifices of what you do as well.
- 1:01:51Being an independent business owner, you have a little bit
- 1:01:54more leeway, sure, but. It's still hard now.
- 1:01:59I think my wife probably is ready for track season to be
- 1:02:02over already just because she has to do all the they're
- 1:02:05running around with practices and stuff so.
- 1:02:07And. For sure, especially I have to
- 1:02:09practice in the afternoon, so she has to run around with the
- 1:02:11kids and, you know, pick up from school while I'm at practice or
- 1:02:16heading to practice. Yeah.
- 1:02:19So yeah, I get it. It's tough, man.
- 1:02:21Every, every profession because it's with family and it should
- 1:02:26be the other way around. Families work should work around
- 1:02:30the family. And unfortunately, in our
- 1:02:31society, at least here in the United States, it doesn't
- 1:02:33happen. Whether you're in a more lenient
- 1:02:35thing like sports, like we are or not, it's it's still tough.
- 1:02:40OK, so you get your first facility, hang that shingle out
- 1:02:43and say, OK, come here, jump smart.
- 1:02:47First of all, how did you come up with the name?
- 1:02:49Join us making progress. How did that come about?
- 1:02:51We didn't have ChatGPT back then.
- 1:02:52So you didn't ChatGPT yet? Man, staring at a wall it was I
- 1:02:56I had jump. I I just had jump and that's all
- 1:03:00I had JUMPI started out like that one day and it always pops
- 1:03:04to be every year on the Facebook post because I before like it
- 1:03:07was like 3 years before I said I was searching for a used runaway
- 1:03:13or finding somewhere to I don't know where the hell I was going
- 1:03:15to put it, but I was searching for a runaway.
- 1:03:18I said JUMP coming soon. I, I had no idea what it was
- 1:03:22either going to come or be, but I came up with that and somebody
- 1:03:26asked what it mean. I I couldn't I didn't have an
- 1:03:28answer at the time. So I like join us making
- 1:03:31progress. Progress to what?
- 1:03:33Getting kids to college. OK.
- 1:03:36So that's kind of been what we what we live by now.
- 1:03:40It's kind of I like that that was kind of natural, like, you
- 1:03:43know, almost like premonition, like I I saw JUMP, but I didn't.
- 1:03:46I don't know what that meant yet.
- 1:03:47That's really cool. So that that pops up on your
- 1:03:50Facebook memories. Every year I'll tag.
- 1:03:52I'll tag you when it when it pops up.
- 1:03:53Please do I love Facebook memories might be my favorite
- 1:03:57thing on social media in the whole world.
- 1:03:59And you know how big I am on Twitter and I love Twitter, but
- 1:04:01I love that just like every day I go to, that's like one of my,
- 1:04:04it's like my, my drinking coffee, reading the newspapers.
- 1:04:07Like first thing I do is I go to memories like, oh, what did I
- 1:04:10post a year ago, three years or four years ago?
- 1:04:12It's just, it's, and it's, you know, because I've been on the
- 1:04:15now for 14/15/16 years, it, it shows like the progress of like
- 1:04:18what's important to me as well. So like way back in the day, I
- 1:04:21don't think anybody even knows this, but you know, 1615 years
- 1:04:24ago I owned the website gotroytrojans.com.
- 1:04:28That's my Mama monitor Troy Trojans.
- 1:04:30And so I ran the the biggest sites fandom site for Troy,
- 1:04:35mainly football, of course, basketball, but sports and
- 1:04:37stuff. And so I ran that website for a
- 1:04:39couple years. And so a lot of my Facebook
- 1:04:41posts were all about just football games we were playing.
- 1:04:44Go to the go to the message board.
- 1:04:45You know, it's always, you know, marketing back to the to the
- 1:04:48website and then, you know, I sold the website off and then
- 1:04:51it, you know, it starts. It was right when, you know, my
- 1:04:53first two or three years of being married.
- 1:04:54So there's a lot of just really, you know, gushy, you know, I
- 1:04:58love you, Amy. Can't wait to be home.
- 1:05:00You can tell I was on the road and stuff like that.
- 1:05:02You know, we used to post on each other's walls.
- 1:05:04My wife would post on my wall. Can't wait for you to be, you
- 1:05:06know, just mushy stuff like that.
- 1:05:08And then, you know, then you start seeing more track and then
- 1:05:11more coaching, you know, track coaches stuff.
- 1:05:13And just, I just like seeing the evolution of myself, I guess.
- 1:05:17I don't know. It's, you know, I'm, I'm what?
- 1:05:20What year did you graduate high school?
- 1:05:222009. Oh God, yeah.
- 1:05:24OK, so I'm 16 ish years older than you.
- 1:05:28I am envious you you at O 9. You have this more than I do,
- 1:05:35but still not as much as like today's kids.
- 1:05:37I am envious of my kids and kids in today's age and stage where
- 1:05:42when they're 80 years old, they're going to have a million
- 1:05:45pictures of themselves as they were going up.
- 1:05:48Their kids are going to be able to see them as parents, you
- 1:05:51know, as kids growing up, their grandkids are going to be.
- 1:05:54I think I have two pictures of when I was a young kid because
- 1:05:57we didn't have digital camera, you know, that's the only two
- 1:05:59photos that have survived. I, I'm just so envious of like,
- 1:06:03I wish I could see like what was a picture of young Mike at 5:00
- 1:06:06and 6:00 and you know, the, the baseball, literally I, I played
- 1:06:09one year in soccer. So I don't want to see that
- 1:06:11picture. I.
- 1:06:12I agree I don't have many videos or yeah.
- 1:06:14That's what I said you were at the you're kind of in that
- 1:06:17transition. There's you have more photos
- 1:06:18than I do, but you don't have any.
- 1:06:20You know when YouTube was YouTube was around when I was in
- 1:06:23high school, bro, that was like when it started.
- 1:06:26I just read an article and literally this weekend in Fast
- 1:06:29Company about YouTube and remarked to my wife because I
- 1:06:32thought, you know, just in my head I'm like, oh, YouTube's
- 1:06:34been around forever. It started.
- 1:06:36It started in O 6. I was a sophomore in high
- 1:06:39school, that's what. I'm saying I I started Gill in O
- 1:06:416 and I was like, Oh my God, we didn't have YouTube really when
- 1:06:44I got to Gill. In fact it started August of O6,
- 1:06:46which is when I started Gill. I'm like, that's like, it's just
- 1:06:49been around forever and it's like, no, bro, that's that's
- 1:06:51still very, very new, by the way.
- 1:06:53Yeah, yeah. Did you know, let's see you
- 1:06:55bring this stuff up. Did you know what YouTube was
- 1:06:58originally supposed to be like when the the owners.
- 1:07:00Yeah. It was going to be a dating
- 1:07:01site. You were going to upload your
- 1:07:04video of you like, hi, I'm Kenny Roseman from Dallas, TX.
- 1:07:07And I like long walks on the beach and stuff.
- 1:07:09That's what it was going to be. And then no one uploaded.
- 1:07:12They were like, OK, no one wants this, So what are we going to
- 1:07:15do? And they started figuring out
- 1:07:16about, you know, OK, we'll just post our own stuff on there.
- 1:07:18So the owner, the creator, the very first video ever, he went
- 1:07:22to the zoo and was like, this is an elephant, this is a lion.
- 1:07:27And that was the first video ever.
- 1:07:29It was a fascinating article. It talked about, you know, all
- 1:07:31the things that they had to get over in regards to copyright
- 1:07:34infringement, much like Napster back in the day.
- 1:07:36And yeah, yeah, yeah. All that kind of stuff.
- 1:07:37And then all the meme, the meme, the viral videos that came along
- 1:07:41the way Charlie bit my finger and stuff like that.
- 1:07:43So it was fascinating because, again, I was just like,
- 1:07:46YouTube's a baby. I, I would kept thinking, I
- 1:07:48think of YouTube's my age. Like, no, YouTube's a little
- 1:07:50baby, man. Yeah.
- 1:07:51Baby. How in the world would we get on
- 1:07:53that anyway? OK, Facebook memories.
- 1:07:57That's. Facebook memories.
- 1:07:58I'm sorry. I'm the owner of this podcast.
- 1:08:01I get to do whatever I want. If you don't like listening to
- 1:08:03this, I'm cool. You can shut off a long time
- 1:08:05ago, but you're still here and I love you for it because we're
- 1:08:08learning about Kenny Roseman. So let's get back to you, Kenny.
- 1:08:12You start the facility jump comes very natural love that
- 1:08:15that's where Facebook memories come.
- 1:08:16How did it go? Owning your own business is a
- 1:08:19that's a that's a whole different ball game, man.
- 1:08:21How did it go? You know, getting clients and,
- 1:08:23and, and walk us through how you started navigating the high
- 1:08:26school versus club bridge. OK, so I guess the how I started
- 1:08:32getting clients was actually from a lot of the high schools
- 1:08:37whenever you again, I was working at a high school before.
- 1:08:41So whenever I saw that the same thing, you're working at a high
- 1:08:45school, a lot of people don't want you working with outside
- 1:08:48kids or go to different high schools.
- 1:08:50For me, that was a problem, right?
- 1:08:51So I want to train everybody. I want to help everyone.
- 1:08:55So I get the facility going. I was able to, I guess, find a
- 1:09:02few coaches that in the area, high school coaches.
- 1:09:05What made you Sorry, Kenny, what made you I mean there, you know,
- 1:09:09we talked about audacity with what Jasmine said to you after
- 1:09:12jumping 4311 3/4. There's some audacity on your
- 1:09:15part. What made you think there are
- 1:09:17There are no facilities like this?
- 1:09:19Let's be real here. When I say no, meaning like it's
- 1:09:22not like every on every corner there's a mini track club,
- 1:09:27right? They go to other facilities.
- 1:09:30They all the clubs go to the facility.
- 1:09:31What made you think like this was a good idea?
- 1:09:34Like this would even be successful?
- 1:09:36You don't seem like the guy who wants to throw away money and
- 1:09:38burn it. So you had to think like I can
- 1:09:39make this work. Where did you?
- 1:09:41This is kind of a crazy idea, dude.
- 1:09:44I got lucky 1 and they there was the building that I was in
- 1:09:48before they were trying to get somebody in the in the sweetest,
- 1:09:52quickest possible. They posted an ad.
- 1:09:55I saw it on Craigslist, man, So even or it was like Facebook.
- 1:09:59It's like this is Craigslist. But they said this 6000 square
- 1:10:04foot warehouse for 3000 a month or something for the first.
- 1:10:08So I said I'll be there tomorrow.
- 1:10:09You is it for real? We came with the money and we
- 1:10:12got moved in within the next week or so.
- 1:10:17But you're right, there's not a lot of facilities for, I guess
- 1:10:21for long jump, long jump or triple jump.
- 1:10:23We're adding high jump in there, but there's not a lot of
- 1:10:27facilities, especially on the South side of Dallas.
- 1:10:30There's a bunch up north, Grapevine, Frisco, McKinney out,
- 1:10:35there's a bunch out, Plano much out that way.
- 1:10:38But in DeSoto, South Dallas, Duncanville, all that area,
- 1:10:41there's not anything like it. So for me it was all right, we
- 1:10:46can do. You've been to the both spots.
- 1:10:49So you we have the turf field, we can do some football
- 1:10:52training. We have the weight room where we
- 1:10:54can do boot camp classes and fitness stuff.
- 1:10:58Now we have at the new facility, we have a little bit more room
- 1:11:02to do everything, full weight room.
- 1:11:05We have the recovery, 60 meter lanes inside a full runway.
- 1:11:12We have, I guess, more resources now to help out, yeah.
- 1:11:16Yeah, I just don't know how. I mean, most of the things that
- 1:11:22come about are, and this sounds bad, but it's not.
- 1:11:25It's copycat of something else, right.
- 1:11:26Meaning like, oh, you can make burgers and fries and, and make
- 1:11:31a living out of that. Like like a franchise, like,
- 1:11:33well, I can too. I call it Burger King or I'll
- 1:11:35call it Wendy's. And you know, they're all the
- 1:11:37same things, but someone did it first and then the other people
- 1:11:40are like, well, we can do it and do it better too.
- 1:11:41Or, you know, make so much money.
- 1:11:43There's no model for maybe the closest thing that you would
- 1:11:46have seen as a model because Texas, I don't know if Texas
- 1:11:51necessarily LED in this area, but certainly quantity wise has
- 1:11:54started leading this area. The pole vault clubs, there's a
- 1:11:57lot of pole vault clubs in Texas and they have a great bit.
- 1:12:01You know, there's a business model there and that's much more
- 1:12:03equipment stressed based. Yeah, but but there's a, you
- 1:12:08know, it's a niche and they do quite well there.
- 1:12:11There are no like there wasn't, there isn't 5 or 6 or 7 jumps
- 1:12:15focused clubs or facilities That that's what to me is like
- 1:12:20there's a little bit of like a risk taker in you for this
- 1:12:24because this easily could have blown up and just been like dead
- 1:12:26in the water from the jump. I say when I got started, there
- 1:12:31was and I was one of the first ones.
- 1:12:34There's a place called ESST, my boy Carlos Cody, he has a spot
- 1:12:40out out in Fort Worth. Then now down in Houston, like
- 1:12:45the Katy Cypress area, Frank Mason and coach hey good.
- 1:12:51They have a place called the Avionics.
- 1:12:53So their club has an indoor facility.
- 1:12:55So we, I think Texas is popping up with a few more and that's
- 1:12:59kind of why we think certain groups are coming out.
- 1:13:03And you, you're seeing a lot more talent coming out of Texas,
- 1:13:06not just our wind, but we're, we have a lot more groups that
- 1:13:09focus on the, the technical events till the pole vaults,
- 1:13:12the, the high, the long jump, triple jump, the hurdles.
- 1:13:15I think that's kind of where Texas is different than a lot of
- 1:13:20the other places that we do rely on club coaches and outside
- 1:13:24coaches especially tired doing double the running.
- 1:13:27But for a jumper they have to come jump.
- 1:13:29A pole vaulter has to go vault, the thrower has to throw.
- 1:13:32So we get a chance to work with all these kids and it's not, I'm
- 1:13:37talking about every level. So it's not just like the really
- 1:13:39elite kids that are coming into practice, It's the developmental
- 1:13:43kids that we're getting to just because they're not getting that
- 1:13:46type of training and they want to try to progress in at the
- 1:13:50high school level too. So it's it's helped a lot, you
- 1:13:52know, having these facilities pop up.
- 1:13:54Do do you get called often from people in Connecticut?
- 1:13:58They're like, hey man, I'm thinking about doing this.
- 1:13:59I see you're doing this. What do I need to be aware of?
- 1:14:02And we helped out with a few people.
- 1:14:05There's one. In Nebraska that we helped with
- 1:14:08setting up stuff. Aaron Gaston reached out to me
- 1:14:12for the place that they have up north.
- 1:14:17I know he did his little different, but we all just try
- 1:14:19to combine how how we did these things to make it lighter or
- 1:14:23easier to move or whatever, whatever it may be, how he did
- 1:14:27the boxes to keep it from bowing out.
- 1:14:30So that that thing we all kind of share and try to help you.
- 1:14:32I don't think jumpers, jump coaches are.
- 1:14:36We're competitive when we compete, but we're all pretty
- 1:14:39cool with each other. I don't have anybody that I
- 1:14:40dislike in the coach jump coaching spot.
- 1:14:43Yeah. And it probably helps when
- 1:14:45they're not, like within call it.
- 1:14:47You know, because of where you are in DeSoto, you know, call it
- 1:14:4930 miles from you, you know, when they're not because,
- 1:14:51because it's like, you know, a guy in Nebraska calls you,
- 1:14:53you're like, well, he ain't stealing my clients like, you
- 1:14:55know, so, so, so I love that collaborative part of it.
- 1:15:00And I because I think, I think that is part of, you know, Texas
- 1:15:04has a lot of advantages, right? Weather for sure, you know,
- 1:15:07sheer size, you know, population.
- 1:15:08There's a lot of people that come out of Texas that are
- 1:15:10faster and jump farther because, well, they just have more people
- 1:15:12to throw at it. There is I, I think, you know,
- 1:15:16these TTFCA and some other groups have really helped raise
- 1:15:20the coaching education level in Texas as well.
- 1:15:22I know we get, and that's kind of the club versus high school.
- 1:15:25One of the arguments is, you know how many high school
- 1:15:28coaches are not air quotes here, real track coaches, their
- 1:15:30football coaches who just do it and all this kind of stuff?
- 1:15:33Sure, some. But guess what also happens in
- 1:15:34Alabama? That was my experience.
- 1:15:36That happens everywhere. We don't have that that quote UN
- 1:15:39quote perfect track coach everywhere, but that's just
- 1:15:42impossible. I think makes me believe, by the
- 1:15:45way, we don't ever talk about this.
- 1:15:46There has to be coaches who coach football who don't know
- 1:15:48what they're doing there either, by the way.
- 1:15:50It just has to be just by just by the sheer numbers.
- 1:15:52It's like there's a lot of football coaches out there.
- 1:15:53Not all of them have to be football junkies.
- 1:15:55I guarantee you there's some offensive line coaches just
- 1:15:57getting by and the head coach is like, well, that's all I got.
- 1:16:00So we're gonna do anyway. There's some.
- 1:16:03There's some talented jump coaches in high school.
- 1:16:06Level and I think big time, big time yeah for me I know one of
- 1:16:09the. Like well.
- 1:16:11I got a chance to work with Jasmine in high school because
- 1:16:16Lauren Bryant, she's the head head girls coach, but now a
- 1:16:21coach with James Wisenhunt was the jumps coach there.
- 1:16:25He doesn't even coach jumps anymore.
- 1:16:26Now he's a distance coach. So again, there's people that
- 1:16:30are really, really good coaches. This guy has had eight guys jump
- 1:16:3448 feet plus down the high school level, right.
- 1:16:38So while we working, we, we combine the, you know, the
- 1:16:41workouts and he works on approach or I work on the jumps.
- 1:16:45I work, he works on the jumps, I work on approach.
- 1:16:48There's kids. He's had a he had a guy to jump
- 1:16:5050 feet as a sophomore. He helped coach Jasmine.
- 1:16:54He went one and two and 5A and 6A1 year and triple jump.
- 1:16:58So Jasmine and another girl. So he there's I don't, I don't
- 1:17:02think that to say that there's especially I I hate hearing that
- 1:17:06there's no good high school coaches because there's there's
- 1:17:10bad club coaches. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:11By the way, that that's the OK. So 1 you can prove that.
- 1:17:14There's good coaches in high school level because the
- 1:17:17majority of of high school track athletes don't go to a club
- 1:17:20coach. Let's be real here.
- 1:17:21The like vast majority don't go to a club coach and go look at
- 1:17:26the results. But that proves it right there.
- 1:17:28And they have more kids, so you're managing more kids with
- 1:17:31less. Yeah, that's right.
- 1:17:33That's right. And two, great point there.
- 1:17:37We hear a lot of it from the club coaching side and these are
- 1:17:39big generalizations, guys. I know there's always people in
- 1:17:42between that that don't act like this, but we hear from the club
- 1:17:45coaches like, well, we're filling a need because there's
- 1:17:48no you know, the high school coaches aren't very good and
- 1:17:50we're the experts and it's. But then again, the law of
- 1:17:53average, it says, well, not every club coach is an expert
- 1:17:55either. Let's yeah, let's be let's be
- 1:17:57real here, but I think there's a need for both.
- 1:18:00But the, the, the need for both means that there has to be
- 1:18:04communication. So today with you, you're,
- 1:18:08you're a very well known club coach.
- 1:18:10You do a lot of good work. I was blessed to be down there a
- 1:18:13few weeks ago and see, and I love, you know, the first person
- 1:18:16I meet there, of course, it was a young lady who's very, very
- 1:18:19good. She was going on some, you know,
- 1:18:20big power forward visits. And I was like, Oh yeah, that's
- 1:18:22what I expect around here. And then the next kid I meet is
- 1:18:25a little, she had to be 8 years old.
- 1:18:27She didn't, you know, didn't not that she didn't want to be
- 1:18:29there. You know, she's, she was an 8
- 1:18:30year old. She was playing around, you
- 1:18:31know, and I was like, oh, wow, he really does have the whole
- 1:18:34gamut here. That's actually, it gave me a
- 1:18:36lot more respect for you. And he's like, oh, he's dealing
- 1:18:38with, he ain't dealing with just the Elise.
- 1:18:39He's got everybody here. So I, I really did love that.
- 1:18:44But you're dealing with a lot of great kids.
- 1:18:47And so you're, you're having to coordinate high school versus
- 1:18:50club versus visits and all this stuff.
- 1:18:52How are you helping with the communication side with high
- 1:18:56school coaches, with the athletes and things like that?
- 1:18:58How, how are you helping? How are you?
- 1:19:00How are you not trying to make it worse?
- 1:19:02That might be so for me. It's As for me.
- 1:19:06I guess communication. Both sides How the?
- 1:19:08Athlete feels and what coach feels that that athlete needs to
- 1:19:12have covered, right? So I, I, I keep using Lake Ridge
- 1:19:16as an example, but that's one of the schools I've worked with the
- 1:19:19most, right? So the girl that came in
- 1:19:21yesterday, we did some testing stuff, standing long jump, 5
- 1:19:25bounds, and then they do their weight room testing at school.
- 1:19:31So I don't have to double up and have a kid Max out twice in the
- 1:19:34weight room, but I can message the coach, send all the stuff.
- 1:19:38So hey, this this kids still coming to practice.
- 1:19:40This is how they've improved on this.
- 1:19:43Do you see the same things at your practice?
- 1:19:47So I think that open communication is even when the
- 1:19:51kids come into practice for me, I'm normally the last thing that
- 1:19:54they see as far as practice, right?
- 1:19:56So if a kid goes to school, they lift weights in the morning,
- 1:20:00then they have after school practice and they want to come
- 1:20:02to me after. It makes it a little harder to
- 1:20:05get the work done, especially knowing what we know with energy
- 1:20:08systems and. Just overall burnout from club
- 1:20:13coach going crazy thinking that we need to do all this.
- 1:20:16It's, it's a balance. Because again, the only person
- 1:20:20that suffers is like you said, that the athlete suffers.
- 1:20:22So I'm not as selfish. For me, I don't even have a
- 1:20:26club. I just train kids, right?
- 1:20:28It's a facility. We train kids so they're not
- 1:20:32they'll never put on a jump Smart Texas uniform.
- 1:20:35Oh, I don't think I I, I, yeah. So that's been my that's.
- 1:20:39Been my thing the whole time. I'm I'm not a club.
- 1:20:41I have a couple kids. That signed up under jump smart
- 1:20:44cap to sign up for a track meet or something but we're not doing
- 1:20:48it's not a jump Smart Texas uniform.
- 1:20:51So I I want to train and reach everyone as I work with even
- 1:20:56clubs like I, I have clubs that take all their kids over there.
- 1:20:58I was, I'd say, wait a minute. So you actually are.
- 1:21:00I'm gonna air quotes here. You're in competition with club
- 1:21:03coaches as well. You know what I mean?
- 1:21:07If, if I were to say. A club coach.
- 1:21:09Is in competition with a high. School coach, which may not be a
- 1:21:11very fair thing to say as I say that, but meaning like you can
- 1:21:16have what you were about to say and I rudely interrupted you.
- 1:21:19You have club kids that come over too you.
- 1:21:20You really are at this weird intersection of all of this.
- 1:21:24I I was thinking club coach who coaches high school kids.
- 1:21:28No, you're, you're a very you're a, you're a, you're a jumps
- 1:21:30trainer, not a club coach. I'm a, I'm a jumps training
- 1:21:34facility owner. Yeah.
- 1:21:35I don't I. Don't do.
- 1:21:37I don't have anybody that does team.
- 1:21:39So most of my kids were on, you know, Jack rabbits, North Texas
- 1:21:43cheetahs. AP Ranch was the girl that you
- 1:21:46met. So is that where she was?
- 1:21:47Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:21:48So we have kids that come from every team.
- 1:21:51It just depends on what what they need.
- 1:21:54I mean, some kids need to come in and lift with coach John or
- 1:21:57some kids need to come in do jumps technique because it's
- 1:21:59they Sprint all day at at jump at school practice.
- 1:22:04So this depends on I guess what a kid needs.
- 1:22:06Yeah, that's way more interest. This this got way more
- 1:22:08interesting so. How do you OK, so you sit at a
- 1:22:12very unique seat. You're, you're, you're seeing
- 1:22:15coaches from AP, Jack rabbits, etcetera, great clubs.
- 1:22:19By the way, I interact with a lot of those guys on Twitter and
- 1:22:22social media, great people, but you're also seeing DeSoto High
- 1:22:26and Duncanville and and things like that.
- 1:22:28So how do you from where you sit things I feel like you might
- 1:22:31have a unique aspect to and maybe you already said it, the C
- 1:22:34word communication. How do you see?
- 1:22:37Because it it's not healthy right now.
- 1:22:42I think I could say this, especially in Texas.
- 1:22:44And that's just my preview, what I see on social media as I'm
- 1:22:47kind of, you know, as the advocate of track coaches, I'm
- 1:22:50watching all of this and trying to help where I can without
- 1:22:52putting my nose in places I don't need to be in.
- 1:22:54But it's not healthy in some respects right now of our club
- 1:22:58coaches to our to our high school coaches.
- 1:23:00But both ways, By the way, I'm not putting the blame on both
- 1:23:02ways. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:23:03But what do we do to make it better, man?
- 1:23:09It has to be about the kid. Like I haven't.
- 1:23:11I've had a. Kids that don't even do school
- 1:23:14track because they can't come to a practice with me or they can't
- 1:23:20go to a practice with their club coach.
- 1:23:21And that might be what the kid or the parents want wants.
- 1:23:25So I think for for all of us, we can't tell.
- 1:23:30We can, but it's not. A lot of times for me, I haven't
- 1:23:35you. I don't like telling parents
- 1:23:36what to do with their children, right.
- 1:23:38So there's always going to be someone that thinks that they
- 1:23:42are missing something or that they need something extra.
- 1:23:45And that's and that's perfectly fine.
- 1:23:47If you feel like your your child is struggling with math, you're
- 1:23:50going to find them a math tutor. It would be that it's the same
- 1:23:54thing. Or if you want to, yeah, if you
- 1:23:56want to get lose 20 lbs, you can get a personal trainer.
- 1:24:00You can still eat good. You can still walk and do
- 1:24:03everything with your family at home.
- 1:24:04But do you want to get a personal trainer to do stuff?
- 1:24:06So it it, I think we have to take the ego out of out of.
- 1:24:12Out of this it's. Not this person is better than
- 1:24:15it's it's like taking a vitamin we're trying to or supplement
- 1:24:20we're supplementing the main work.
- 1:24:23I don't I'll never call myself like you're getting everything
- 1:24:26you need from what I'm giving you right.
- 1:24:30So I think that's I don't don't always consider.
- 1:24:35Yourself the main work for me. I think there's a lot of
- 1:24:39especially when you have to work with a lot of other people,
- 1:24:42there has to be there has to be room for everybody to work.
- 1:24:47So again, now it's fall training, right?
- 1:24:50So I can't squat somebody really, really, really heavy.
- 1:24:54And I know their school coach is going to have them doing wickets
- 1:24:57the next day. So that's just that's that would
- 1:25:00be us being. So you have to go with this
- 1:25:01program. You have to be able to shuffle
- 1:25:03and move stuff around just for the the safety of the kid, you
- 1:25:07know, So, so are you just in like constant communication with
- 1:25:10all these other coaches then? Man, I have that's I have a lot
- 1:25:13of coaches in my phone, but like when we send the.
- 1:25:15Videos there's certain schools that again, I'm asking the kid
- 1:25:19every day when the kid walks in what'd you do at practice today?
- 1:25:21You you sure you heard that when you walked in?
- 1:25:23What you guys what'd you guys do today?
- 1:25:25What'd you guys do today? Because I don't, I never want to
- 1:25:28go back and and text their body early, especially with kids like
- 1:25:32you don't right, It's, it's it's early in the season, but then
- 1:25:37just I want to leave some room on the bone in college, right.
- 1:25:42So you, I, I for me, I want to train them well, but leave room
- 1:25:47for them to be exposed to more in college training wise, right,
- 1:25:51right. I I think I'm going to start
- 1:25:52calling you the vitamin. I really like that the
- 1:25:54supplement of. Like, oh, I, I had this picture
- 1:25:58that you were prescribing workouts from September 5th all
- 1:26:02the way through June. You're you're you're really a
- 1:26:06coordinator even of like, oh, OK, you're working with this
- 1:26:09club coach and this high school coach.
- 1:26:10OK, here's you need a little bit more help here.
- 1:26:13OK, let's make sure we're doing those in the right time periods
- 1:26:15because like I said, you lifted heavy so we're not going to go
- 1:26:17do this XYZ. That's super fascinating.
- 1:26:20I don't know that like I can't think of a top ahead.
- 1:26:24Like I'm trying to think of other clubs like, oh, that's how
- 1:26:26they do. It most are, you know.
- 1:26:28Clubs here's we have a uniform during the summer or whatever
- 1:26:31and yeah, yeah, yeah, that's so unique.
- 1:26:33And then now for us at the facility, we have, let's say,
- 1:26:36coach. John Drummond, that's there and
- 1:26:39then we have DJ Henderson, that's there so and Coach
- 1:26:42Kamaran. So we have three other coaches
- 1:26:45that we're all under the same roof and we can plan all these
- 1:26:49workouts together. So for us, even before, when I
- 1:26:53was younger, I had, I had to do all the weight lifting, I had to
- 1:26:56do the speed work, I had to do this.
- 1:26:57So we had to combine 3-4 hours in into one or two sessions.
- 1:27:02So now we get a chance to really, really, really break
- 1:27:06stuff down kid by kid, athlete by athlete, depending on what
- 1:27:09they need. So it's I'm excited, man.
- 1:27:13It's going to be a fun year. How do you who was the young man
- 1:27:17that I met that was. Running the kids through that
- 1:27:19one workout, Was that DJ? Yeah, that was DJ.
- 1:27:21The kid that went to Oregon, that was DJ Henderson.
- 1:27:25Yeah, DJ. You named another.
- 1:27:26Coach, I don't think I met this person, no.
- 1:27:28Coach Kamya Smith, he's that he does like a lot of.
- 1:27:31My football training and my strength and conditioning.
- 1:27:34So anything that involves footwork, that's you got OK, but
- 1:27:37foot, footwork, strength and conditioning, we have a said a
- 1:27:40few other coaches that help out. So how do you, you know, jump
- 1:27:45Texas? And that jump Smart Texas and
- 1:27:47that facility is is Kenny wrote. Like when anybody thinks about
- 1:27:50it, it's it's Kenny. You added a dear friend.
- 1:27:54You know, this is I'm not saying anything I wouldn't say in front
- 1:27:57of JD and both of you, and I probably said it when I was
- 1:28:00there. How do you so JD comes with his
- 1:28:03own style. And I'm not talking about the
- 1:28:05clown Prince of track style things.
- 1:28:07I'm talking about his own coaching philosophy and
- 1:28:09thoughts. And you know, he's a he's a man
- 1:28:11of my age. So we've been around the block.
- 1:28:12He's got, you know, he's stubborn in some things, right?
- 1:28:14How do you how do you guys coordinate maybe differing
- 1:28:18styles and maybe you're going to tell me your styles are the
- 1:28:20exact same. I have no clue.
- 1:28:21But how do you, you know, it's like, hey, this is my facility
- 1:28:23boss, but but also you're, you're a very collaborative
- 1:28:26person. How do you handle someone of JD
- 1:28:28stature? He's got a stature man.
- 1:28:30He's a, he's a strong personality.
- 1:28:33You know how that is. But luckily.
- 1:28:35Randomly again, he coached Jasmine in high school.
- 1:28:39That's right. So he did her strength and
- 1:28:41conditioning. So all.
- 1:28:42Throughout that. Time.
- 1:28:43That was 45 years of I'm going to coach John to do my weight
- 1:28:48lifting and then we're going to come jump after her.
- 1:28:51So for her, like again, how talented she was, She would go
- 1:28:54do all these crazy hard workouts with coach John and then not
- 1:28:57knowing, you know, I knew what she she was squat and do all
- 1:29:01this other stuff. But actually seeing coach John
- 1:29:03now, I feel bad for her because there's I don't know how I made
- 1:29:08you jump after doing some of the stuff that I've seen coach John
- 1:29:11do to some of these kids every day.
- 1:29:13But no, it's and even Coach DJ, like I trained him in high
- 1:29:16school. But for us, we know, we know
- 1:29:21what the, I guess what the medicine we're giving the kid
- 1:29:24is, right? So if they only need to work on
- 1:29:26flexibility and jump technique today, that's how we're working
- 1:29:30on or whatever, like whatever kids.
- 1:29:32So when we have all these coaches there, I can send the
- 1:29:35kid to Coach DJ. All right, we're going to work
- 1:29:36on some of these, some of this running mechanic stuff.
- 1:29:38We're going to work on some excel and body position with
- 1:29:40Coach DJ. If you need to have a
- 1:29:43conditioning day or work on some strength to conditioning, do
- 1:29:45some starts. You go Coach John, right?
- 1:29:48So we have, you know, the ability to, I guess, pick and
- 1:29:52choose which. Coaches get to work with.
- 1:29:54Which kids, which day? And it does help, but we all do
- 1:29:56have our own groups though, so it's it's cool.
- 1:29:59I mean, you're really like, it's one thing for you to say like.
- 1:30:02You know, we need to have a lot of communication amongst our
- 1:30:05club and high school and vitamin people, things like that.
- 1:30:08But you're living it in your own facility of like coordination
- 1:30:11with John DJ Like you're you're really, I mean, you're living
- 1:30:14what you're preaching here is what I'm kind of seeing.
- 1:30:17And we try to again, we're we are track nerds.
- 1:30:21So we do we spend a lot of time together.
- 1:30:25I talked to DJ and John already today and getting ready for
- 1:30:29practices later, but seeing what what we need to improve on and
- 1:30:33what we need to fix or which kids are coming in that did XY
- 1:30:38and Z the last two workouts. So we do we do talk a lot.
- 1:30:42I think it it helps. I love that DJ seems like a
- 1:30:46super fun kid. So love and I say.
- 1:30:48Kid, you know, he's just younger than all of us, but loved
- 1:30:52watching him lead the he's energetic man, very.
- 1:30:54Oh my God, yeah, yeah, very. And, you know, knowing.
- 1:30:57John for quite a while. Now I mean it is interesting you
- 1:31:00know not not discounting our footwork, I guys don't know him,
- 1:31:03but you, you, you triangle you 3 headed dragon there.
- 1:31:06It is interesting kind of the advantages that each one of you
- 1:31:09guys bring to the table. Man, it's it's perfect.
- 1:31:13I got a jump coach and two high. Level Sprint coaches and John
- 1:31:16can do some strength and conditioning and so it's it's
- 1:31:21really, really cool to see the kids that we've had collect.
- 1:31:25I mean John just came in this year, but collectively me and DJ
- 1:31:28the last, you know, four to five years since he's graduated.
- 1:31:31We've been doing, you know, 25 foot kids and kids that grant he
- 1:31:37had he had two ten one kids 10/18/10 let yeah, and then 1032
- 1:31:43like so he's even for him like it's it's cool seeing after
- 1:31:46that. You coached before yeah,
- 1:31:48graduate. They come home and people are
- 1:31:51saying I remember people something like telling me I
- 1:31:53couldn't be a good coach because I was young and like his age.
- 1:31:56But now he's three or four years in and he has, you know, 210 one
- 1:32:00guys. What are you going to tell him?
- 1:32:01Right, right, right. You can't say.
- 1:32:03You can't say he's not a good coach, right?
- 1:32:05Right, you might. Go through whole career and not
- 1:32:07have 10-1 guys. I mean, let's.
- 1:32:08Let's be real well, Kenny, as you look at you know, you're
- 1:32:12just moving in. The dust wasn't even settled
- 1:32:14when I was there a couple weeks ago.
- 1:32:15You're still moving in and getting things good.
- 1:32:17What's your vision? What is as you look towards you
- 1:32:20know it's 2025203020402050. What do you want Jump Smart to
- 1:32:24become? It's.
- 1:32:28Going to be a platform for all all jumpers.
- 1:32:33Again, I, I do want to, I'm not saying a big, huge league or
- 1:32:39anything, but it's going to be a facility where we can come in
- 1:32:41and we can have our own stuff. They have different pole vault
- 1:32:46meats that, that these facilities they have.
- 1:32:50There's places like in Europe that just have longer facilities
- 1:32:53or they have the 60 inside and they can, we can have these
- 1:32:57little small, not small meats cause the one in December is
- 1:33:00going to be crazy. But we can have these meats and
- 1:33:02everything where college kids are jumping.
- 1:33:06We have the pros jumping, we have high school coaches coming
- 1:33:09in. But again, I think for me in the
- 1:33:12facility is trying to, there's a lot of sports complexes in Texas
- 1:33:17and throughout the country. And for me, it was trying to go
- 1:33:23in that route, I guess as a, as a true facility where we can
- 1:33:28have events for well, wrap us up because with this you talked
- 1:33:35about the. Soccer background with the OD,
- 1:33:37the Olympic development and showcases and things like that.
- 1:33:40And you, you, you gave us little tease right there about
- 1:33:42December. Talk to us about you.
- 1:33:43You do and I don't, I can't remember what year this is at
- 1:33:46least year three that I can think of.
- 1:33:48But you do this like jump showcase in December.
- 1:33:50Talk to us about that, how that started and what's your goals
- 1:33:53from that going on our sixth year now.
- 1:33:55So we started, Yeah, so. It's our 6th edition.
- 1:33:58We did the first one during COVID.
- 1:34:02So yeah, we went out to AP Ranch for the first one.
- 1:34:06And for us it was trying to get, I had 12 seniors that track
- 1:34:11season was cut short. How with how can we get them the
- 1:34:15visibility with college coaches? And again, I, I remember just
- 1:34:20going to ODP camps and doing all this stuff and seeing that we do
- 1:34:24have that for soccer, football has there's a, the same weekend
- 1:34:30they had a mega, they had 200 schools come out to 1 football
- 1:34:34camp and they had just every kid trying out and doing stuff and
- 1:34:39everybody's getting offered and doing all this crazy stuff.
- 1:34:41But I said we don't track doesn't have anything like that.
- 1:34:44Not, I'm not even like the big shoe national meets, like
- 1:34:48they're always having to split up or if a coach comes, they
- 1:34:50come. I would say at the last, last
- 1:34:55year we had 60 coaches. So that's that's probably more
- 1:34:58coaches than I saw at the big shoe meets.
- 1:35:01So, and especially this year with the the convention being in
- 1:35:04Dallas, we're gonna get, I mean, if we get 100 coaches, I
- 1:35:07wouldn't be surprised, but it's cool.
- 1:35:09Because. There's talent of all level.
- 1:35:12Like last year we had around 220 kids come out just for long
- 1:35:16jump, triple jump. And I said it's from every,
- 1:35:21every part of the country. Yeah.
- 1:35:23So it, it was really impressive to see the group that we put
- 1:35:27together and we're trying to get some really good kids.
- 1:35:29I'm trying to get a couple international kids to come over.
- 1:35:33But trying to make the, the showcase event a, a global event
- 1:35:37for the United States, 'cause I think I, I, I do take it
- 1:35:41personally as a jump coach when a college coach has to go
- 1:35:44overseas to get a jumper, right? And so for me, it's like I have,
- 1:35:49I'll have the same kid in my group right now and you're going
- 1:35:52like, so for me, I especially in Texas, we could, we can go
- 1:35:58against a lot of countries just in Texas with the talent that we
- 1:36:01have on the jump side, especially in the last years
- 1:36:04we've had, I think we've had a 5050150253 foot guy the last six
- 1:36:10years. Seven years.
- 1:36:11Yeah. Even on the girls, we've had
- 1:36:14four girls that jump 44 feet off from Texas, right?
- 1:36:17Yeah, That's quite amazing. What?
- 1:36:19At the showcase. Do they just, do they focus on
- 1:36:23doing the long indoor triple jump or do you do any like fly
- 1:36:2630 work or anything Like I think it like showcase like other
- 1:36:29things, right? This year we're putting the
- 1:36:32beams on the runway, so. We're making doing like the
- 1:36:35World Athletics type Research reports.
- 1:36:38So we're going to have a the, the big screen on there.
- 1:36:41So as they come through the beams, the you get the last 10m
- 1:36:45splits you can get. So that's going to be cool.
- 1:36:48So we already have video. Boards and all that.
- 1:36:51We just, I give you all the secret stuff.
- 1:36:53We ordered a championship belt, so we're going to have a big,
- 1:36:57big wrestling. Belt for the Champions.
- 1:37:01We're doing a big light show so that all the sparklers and stuff
- 1:37:04like so when they get announced, it's going to that's right.
- 1:37:07It's it's going to be it's going to be like the Olympics inside.
- 1:37:10It's going to be fun. Like they're going to have the
- 1:37:12sparklers, they're going to say coming to the runway.
- 1:37:14Now we have little love from Dallas, TX, and so it's going to
- 1:37:18be cool. They get their own announcement,
- 1:37:20pick their walk out music and stuff for the finalists and
- 1:37:23stuff. It's going to be fun.
- 1:37:24That's so cool. Is that you mentioned around the
- 1:37:26the convention? The convention starts roughly
- 1:37:30Sunday and goes through the roughly Thursday.
- 1:37:31There's things that add on to. Is it before or after?
- 1:37:34Before We always do it around the college dead period, so
- 1:37:37yeah. So it'll be that Saturday,
- 1:37:39Sunday. So you fly.
- 1:37:41In early May. Come out on Yeah, on Saturday or
- 1:37:43Sunday. I'm I I should know.
- 1:37:45Soon I might. Be we're we're a sponsor of the
- 1:37:49NFHSAD convention in I AAA, which is the weekend like
- 1:37:54adjacent basically Saturday through Monday and then the USTC
- 1:37:59a Sunday through Thursday. Our vendor starts on Monday.
- 1:38:02But normally I have a separate group that goes to the NFS ad
- 1:38:07show. I don't even think about it,
- 1:38:09'cause I'm focused on USTF CCA this year.
- 1:38:13We're sponsoring. We're doing like for all the ADS
- 1:38:16there. We're doing this, you know,
- 1:38:18bags, tournament, you know, bags.
- 1:38:20Yeah. And they, they might want me to
- 1:38:23do the announcing for that. So I may go to Tampa and then
- 1:38:28Sunday night come to Dallas and then be ready for Monday through
- 1:38:31the rest of the week. If I don't, I think I might come
- 1:38:34early. Yeah, Go check it out.
- 1:38:36Yeah. Because that's good that I can't
- 1:38:38wait to see that. I'm called.
- 1:38:40Spectacle, but like that, you know, that's just really cool to
- 1:38:43give the kids something they deserve.
- 1:38:44They work super hard. It's gonna be fun, man.
- 1:38:47I think all the college coaches coming in is.
- 1:38:50Refreshing especially for them there there's not AI have never
- 1:38:55been somewhere where there's 50 or 60 college coaches hanging
- 1:38:58out watching a long jump competition and you might see a
- 1:39:0217 girl 17 foot girl getting a chance to talk to any one of her
- 1:39:07dream schools and or any school that might as remember like
- 1:39:12there was a kid that mom was like I can't get her down there.
- 1:39:15She I'm I'm have to send her on the bus.
- 1:39:17The girl came on a bus from Houston.
- 1:39:20Unsigned senior girl jumps 1910 and 40 foot 5 full ride that day
- 1:39:27so for me. That's.
- 1:39:29That's cool. That's the impact that it has
- 1:39:31just seeing. Every kid that.
- 1:39:34Comes to the track me I'm guaranteed not not guaranteed,
- 1:39:36but they'll have a that's where they're seeing it yeah that's
- 1:39:41it's it's a it's a closed community for us so it's that's
- 1:39:43what they're seeing I I like it where can someone someone's
- 1:39:47hearing this and they like. Wait I want to be there.
- 1:39:50What website or what? What do we just Google the the
- 1:39:53registrations on Texas mile split?
- 1:39:56And then if you want to follow us on Jump Smart Texas on
- 1:39:59everything, I can send you all the registration information or
- 1:40:03I'll be, I'm sure I'll be posting a lot of stuff as we get
- 1:40:05closer to this meet and the camps and all that.
- 1:40:07So. Yeah, I love that.
- 1:40:09That's awesome, man. Kenny, thank you so much, man,
- 1:40:12You know. One of the most valuable things
- 1:40:14you give me is time. And, you know, I mentioned, you
- 1:40:16know, being down there. I was down there for another
- 1:40:18project, but just to stop by just to hang out, man, it it.
- 1:40:22I don't. I must have just gotten lucky.
- 1:40:23I must have been a good boy because it was also John
- 1:40:26Drummond's birthday, which that was a lot of fun just to, yeah,
- 1:40:29sing him happy birthday and reminisce about, you know, me
- 1:40:31and him that way back in 2000. And we look the exact same today
- 1:40:36as we did. Exact same, Mike.
- 1:40:38Exact same but. Yeah, but it was just a lot of
- 1:40:42fun. It was cool.
- 1:40:43To see the kids and the, and really the, the way that you
- 1:40:46operate with the kids, like like a very, I guess maybe
- 1:40:50collaborative is the best word. Like there was a lot of mutual
- 1:40:52respect and, and working hard and still having fun.
- 1:40:55And it just, it was a lot of fun to see you kind of in your
- 1:40:57natural habitat. You know, I, I'd seen you at
- 1:40:59Nike indoor nationals that one year and that's different.
- 1:41:01That's much more, I don't say stressful, but you know, locked
- 1:41:05in where the training atmosphere was a little bit more open.
- 1:41:07It was just it was a lot of fun. And I'm really grateful you
- 1:41:10allow me to come in and stick my nose in there and, and reminisce
- 1:41:13a little bit about my old coaching days and, and just to
- 1:41:15see you in action, man, it's a lot of fun.
- 1:41:17No problem, man, those little kids are stressing me out.
- 1:41:19But it was. Fun have you in there man?
- 1:41:22It's cool. I love it Well, Kenny, thank you
- 1:41:24again so much for being here man.
- 1:41:26I really. Just am grateful for your your
- 1:41:28journey, man. It's really unique.
- 1:41:30I really do like it. And I think it's culminated in
- 1:41:32what you're doing now. You're really pioneering
- 1:41:34something here. Like I said, this is not a this
- 1:41:36is not a playbook that's out there.
- 1:41:38More people are doing it. And I think, you know, part of
- 1:41:41that is seeing sometimes we just have to see it to believe it's
- 1:41:43like, wait a minute, this dude in Texas is doing this.
- 1:41:45Well, I can do this in Chicago or Seattle, etcetera.
- 1:41:49And that's going to help the jumping community and therefore
- 1:41:51the track and field community as a whole.
- 1:41:53And that's, that's called legacy, my friend.
- 1:41:55And so I'm just really grateful for you being involved in our
- 1:41:58sport and staying in our sport and not going to soccer.
- 1:42:00That's I'm really grateful for that.
- 1:42:03Mike. I appreciate you having me, man
- 1:42:04Appreciate it. Absolutely.
- 1:42:06Appreciate you guys being here and listening, just a lot of fun
- 1:42:08if you are. Hearing this for the first time
- 1:42:10and didn't know about this showcase.
- 1:42:12Go use Google. That's I don't even know why I
- 1:42:14asked for websites anymore. Just Google North Texas jump
- 1:42:16showcase. Yeah Google it.
- 1:42:19I might be out. There I'll by the time you're.
- 1:42:21Listening to this, I'll know if I'm going to be out there and if
- 1:42:23I am, you'll see it on my social because I'll start amping it up
- 1:42:26as well. It's a hard choice.
- 1:42:28Be around a bunch of long jump trouble jumpers or be around a
- 1:42:30bunch of people playing bags. Let me tell you where I would
- 1:42:32like to be. I'd like to be in Texas, but
- 1:42:34we'll see. You know, your boy gets a lot of
- 1:42:36demands on him sometimes the hard jobs, you know, MCN and
- 1:42:40stuff. So, so looking forward to that.
- 1:42:42I'll let you guys know if I'll be there otherwise.
- 1:42:43Anyway, I'll still be publicizing it for you.
- 1:42:46You know that Kenny. So that's what's good for the
- 1:42:48kids and the coaches. So thanks again for being here
- 1:42:49guys. I really do appreciate you
- 1:42:51enjoying us. Next week we'll do it all over
- 1:42:52again and have some more fun. See you guys if it goes to
- 1:42:57appreciate the coach. The ones that pouring people
- 1:42:59most. Every season needs a voice of
- 1:43:01reason speaking the growth you got to prep before you carry the

- 1:43:15your purpose. Saint Clair.
- 1:43:16It can't happen until you listen.
- 1:43:18We're both is you can't mentor without a mentor of experience.
- 1:43:22You can reinvent those years. Every plan's got to stand and
- 1:43:25deliver to the price sacrifice. Can you give up you.
- 1:43:28It's a choice and a fight, not a win or lose.
- 1:43:31It's not a ploy boy device. Y'all can make more moves.

- 1:43:48It's all about connections put together for the profession to
- 1:43:51where every track coach could be blessing.
