- 0:47you're part of the fam.
- 0:52It's lunchtime.
- 0:55What is going on, everybody?
- 0:56Welcome to Lunch with the Clydesdales.
- 0:59A Monday after a three-day weekend,
- 1:01back to work, back at it,
- 1:04doing all the things.
- 1:08Man.
- 1:10Man.
- 1:12I thought the cowboy was going to be
- 1:13here today.
- 1:15I have not seen the cowboy in, like,
- 1:17days.
- 1:18I'm starting to get a little jittery.
- 1:22Like, that's my partner, that's my guy,
- 1:25and...
- 1:27I haven't even heard from him.
- 1:28Man, I need to do a safety check,
- 1:30wellness check at some point today.
- 1:33Make sure he's still alive and doing well.
- 1:37So I hope everybody's having a great
- 1:40Monday after a wild, wild weekend.
- 1:49He's watching, Siobhan.
- 1:51There you go.
- 1:54What's up, Joseph?
- 1:55What's up, Vicky, Tessa?
- 1:56Hope you guys are doing great.
- 2:01Let's get some breaking news out of the
- 2:04way.
- 2:06I don't know if this is like,
- 2:08I don't know.
- 2:10I don't know.
- 2:11I don't know what's going on here,
- 2:13but I got a media credential for the
- 2:18Masters CrossFit Games like two minutes
- 2:21before I went on air.
- 2:25I don't know if this is the beginning
- 2:28of repairing a relationship or what,
- 2:34but I have an official media credential
- 2:39for the masters CrossFit games.
- 2:43So now I have a master's credential and
- 2:46I have a elite credential.
- 2:55See, they don't hate you.
- 2:58It's just weird, Andrew.
- 2:59I just don't understand it.
- 3:01It's just like I've always tried to be
- 3:04helpful.
- 3:04I've always tried to abide by all the
- 3:07rules, do all the things.
- 3:11So I don't know.
- 3:11Maybe it's just a weird misperception.
- 3:16The bad thing is because I didn't know
- 3:18they were going to be in the same
- 3:19week when I reserved my hotel and my
- 3:23flights and all that a year ago,
- 3:25I reserved them like I'm going for the
- 3:27elites only.
- 3:29And so I don't get there until Wednesday
- 3:31morning.
- 3:32So I'll miss half of it,
- 3:33but at least I'll get to go in.
- 3:36I have media pit access,
- 3:39so I'll be able to get some shots
- 3:41and stuff.
- 3:42So hopefully that is...
- 3:46Uh, so hopefully that is still fun.
- 3:52Still fun.
- 3:52Hopefully,
- 3:53because a lot of times like that first
- 3:55and we'll find out workouts maybe today.
- 3:59Um,
- 3:59but usually that first workout is like a
- 4:01long run off site, something like that.
- 4:04I missed that.
- 4:05Okay.
- 4:06Um, oh my gosh, he's, he's okay.
- 4:09I am okay.
- 4:11Sorry, y'all work.
- 4:13I was going to do a wellness check
- 4:14later today because I haven't seen you
- 4:16since Thursday.
- 4:17I understand.
- 4:18I understand.
- 4:20I was getting jittery.
- 4:21I was missing you.
- 4:25Nature of my job.
- 4:26Nature of my job.
- 4:30Does this mean you're going early to cover
- 4:31the Masters?
- 4:32Nope.
- 4:34Joseph, airfare is locked in.
- 4:37If I changed my hotel reservation,
- 4:40it upped the cost so much.
- 4:44I just couldn't eat the difference.
- 4:46So I'm just going to show up Wednesday
- 4:49morning and cover what I can.
- 4:53Hopefully,
- 4:57Jamie and Carolyn don't go until the
- 4:59afternoon.
- 5:00A lot of times at the Masters games,
- 5:03the older athletes go in the morning.
- 5:06The younger athletes go in the evening,
- 5:08go afternoon, evening.
- 5:10So hopefully that's what happens.
- 5:12But I don't know.
- 5:13I don't have a schedule or anything.
- 5:17But I mean, let's be honest here.
- 5:18Are you actually going to get,
- 5:19would you actually get access to the
- 5:20Masters if you were going early anyway?
- 5:23I just got them.
- 5:24I just announced that.
- 5:25I missed that.
- 5:26Sorry.
- 5:28It happened two minutes before airtime.
- 5:30No shit.
- 5:31Yeah.
- 5:31Like actual access or did they just give
- 5:33you a ticket to get in the door?
- 5:35Like media pit access.
- 5:38I know.
- 5:41The new dawn is a new day.
- 5:45Hey, you know what?
- 5:46Good.
- 5:47Yeah.
- 5:48It's a step in the right direction.
- 5:49A hundred percent.
- 5:53Um, we looked at flying in on Tuesday.
- 5:54It's ridiculous.
- 5:55I know, man.
- 5:57Yeah.
- 5:57Any,
- 5:58any change to my itinerary hotel or flight
- 6:01was beyond ridiculous.
- 6:05And I booked my hotel like literally the
- 6:10day they announced they're going to San
- 6:11Jose.
- 6:14So I got like five nights for five
- 6:16hundred bucks.
- 6:18I remember when you say I remember you
- 6:19saying that.
- 6:20Yeah.
- 6:22And so I can't change that.
- 6:24No, that's insane.
- 6:28So yeah, so that's big news.
- 6:31I can get into the Masters.
- 6:33I don't need to steal Shanna's coaching
- 6:35pass.
- 6:37I mean, you don't need to.
- 6:41I just tried to drink my coffee out
- 6:42of the back end.
- 6:43Don't do that.
- 6:44It's going to pour all over your face.
- 6:45It's going to be a bad look.
- 6:48Yeah, it might have been good for ratings,
- 6:50though.
- 6:51It couldn't hurt.
- 6:51It couldn't hurt.
- 6:54Well, it would hurt you,
- 6:55depending on how hot it is, I guess.
- 6:57Dude, congrats, man.
- 6:59I mean... Yeah.
- 7:05It's funny because...
- 7:07And I don't mean to start the show
- 7:08off... It's a Monday.
- 7:09I don't mean to start off with a
- 7:10downer.
- 7:13I'm really at the razor's edge of...
- 7:16as to whether this may be my last
- 7:19games really and not that i'm like giving
- 7:23up on crossfit or watching crossfit or any
- 7:26of that kind of stuff right it's just
- 7:30they limit the access so much at the
- 7:32games right and this year especially
- 7:37Well,
- 7:38this year and in years before last year,
- 7:41so we went from like barely able to
- 7:43even talk to any athlete to full access
- 7:48where everybody was in the warm-up area.
- 7:50And I heard Angelo DiCicco say on the
- 7:53Froning podcast,
- 7:54felt like an animal at the zoo last
- 7:56year.
- 7:58Which I think was way too much.
- 8:00And now we're back to like very few
- 8:03people get any kind of access at all.
- 8:06I think they're only letting twenty pit
- 8:07passes out.
- 8:11I didn't think it was that many.
- 8:15This isn't warm-up access.
- 8:17This is to like around the floor.
- 8:19Oh, that's just on the floor.
- 8:20Yeah.
- 8:21Got it.
- 8:21Damn.
- 8:22Damn.
- 8:23Yeah.
- 8:25So it's really restricted this year.
- 8:27They seem to have a problem finding a
- 8:29happy medium.
- 8:31With anything?
- 8:32Yeah.
- 8:33Oh, yeah.
- 8:33No, not just with that.
- 8:34Just in general.
- 8:36They seem to have a very difficult time.
- 8:39It's either all the way one way or
- 8:40all the way the other way.
- 8:42And it's very little of, okay, well,
- 8:45we don't need to have everybody in there,
- 8:47but we should have a reasonable amount of
- 8:48people in there.
- 8:49Or nobody's coming.
- 8:51We're going to have eight people and
- 8:53that's it.
- 8:54Yep.
- 8:56It doesn't make it easy by any stretch
- 8:57of the imagination.
- 8:59So like we were talking after the show
- 9:01last night and I was like,
- 9:03unless there are significant changes to
- 9:05the season, I just don't,
- 9:09I think I can cover it as well
- 9:10from my basement sitting here as I can
- 9:14being there.
- 9:17Sad but true.
- 9:18You lose kind of the vibe, but like,
- 9:23like the glintons have joseph and meg
- 9:25going and they can get the vibe right
- 9:28yeah you just you don't need to send
- 9:30a crew anymore you just need to send
- 9:32someone to be like on location like the
- 9:35old days of espn like one person out
- 9:38at the event with the the crowd and
- 9:41the and the fans and doing the thing
- 9:43to catch the vibe and everybody else
- 9:45reporting back from the studio
- 9:49live in person.
- 9:52We go to Meg.
- 9:54Right.
- 9:55Right.
- 9:56Meg's just standing there.
- 9:58Hi.
- 9:59It's pretty fun out here.
- 10:00It's pretty good time.
- 10:03And then you just roll out because
- 10:04Joseph's definitely gonna be in charge of
- 10:06the camera.
- 10:11Scott,
- 10:11are they protecting the athletes or
- 10:13protecting CrossFit media content with all
- 10:15the restrictions?
- 10:17I honestly think they're protecting the...
- 10:21I think there was too much...
- 10:25There was way too much media last year
- 10:27for the athletes.
- 10:29The athletes were getting asked the same
- 10:30question over and over and over.
- 10:35There was... I mean,
- 10:36there were so many people there
- 10:40even to get to talk to an athlete,
- 10:41you had to kind of like sit there
- 10:42and wait because you didn't want to
- 10:46interrupt,
- 10:47but you were looking for that moment.
- 10:49And, and it,
- 10:51and it took me like a couple hours
- 10:53other than like Hattie,
- 10:54who I had an agreement with, it took,
- 10:58Joseph says, bless you.
- 11:00Um, it was actually coughing,
- 11:01but thank you.
- 11:03Um,
- 11:05But it took me a while to like
- 11:06to have sidebar conversations with the
- 11:09athletes to like understand when they
- 11:12wanted to be approached.
- 11:14Right.
- 11:16So like you had with Hattie,
- 11:18if you don't have, you know,
- 11:21an agreement going in, hey, look.
- 11:24Come to me first, you know,
- 11:26or I'm going to catch you first, whatever.
- 11:28And then what, you know,
- 11:29because I'm producing this content about
- 11:32you for the entire weekend.
- 11:33So we have an agreement, you know,
- 11:35come to me first.
- 11:36I'm going to get access to you,
- 11:37you know, at whenever time, blah, blah,
- 11:39whatever.
- 11:39Basically,
- 11:39we're going to hang out all weekend.
- 11:41Because other than that, dude, you just,
- 11:44it's a cattle line.
- 11:47So like an example is with Lucy Campbell.
- 11:50Like I had a sidebar conversation with her
- 11:53just without a camera on, right?
- 11:55And she goes, hey,
- 11:57if I'm on the bike cooling down,
- 11:59come talk to me.
- 12:00I need my mind off stuff anyway.
- 12:02Yeah.
- 12:04And I'll talk to you as much as
- 12:06you want if I'm over on the bike.
- 12:09Okay.
- 12:09I can respect that.
- 12:12But I'm not sure everybody got that memo
- 12:15that you should have those conversations
- 12:18and figure that stuff out, right?
- 12:22So when someone's over there cleaning,
- 12:24there's a person with a camera and a
- 12:26mic going, is that heavy?
- 12:28Wow, that looks heavy.
- 12:40Questions like, who are you dating?
- 12:45Yeah,
- 12:45you just came off the floor and you
- 12:46just won your event or whatnot and be
- 12:49like, so who are you dating?
- 12:54I actually think the athletes would be
- 12:56refreshed by that question.
- 12:58I'm going to tell you what,
- 12:59I thought Taylor did a fantastic job at
- 13:01NorCal asking him like,
- 13:04what people would consider to be silly
- 13:06questions, but they seem to be,
- 13:08they were engaging with him because he was
- 13:10asking them stuff that,
- 13:12and was being himself about it.
- 13:13You know,
- 13:14what's your favorite CrossFit workout
- 13:16instead of going, wow,
- 13:18you did it on broken.
- 13:19Congratulations.
- 13:20High five.
- 13:20Everybody saw that.
- 13:21Nobody needs to talk about it.
- 13:24I did sideline stuff.
- 13:25I tried to look at the,
- 13:27the big picture storyline,
- 13:28not the event storyline.
- 13:31So you finish this event, yeah,
- 13:33and stuff happened out there.
- 13:34But overall on the weekend,
- 13:37this is what you came in with.
- 13:38This is what you're trying to accomplish.
- 13:40Where are we in the big picture?
- 13:46So don't ask chicken or fish.
- 13:48Sure.
- 13:49I mean,
- 13:49there was that guy in the early teens
- 13:52that asked really silly questions in
- 13:54between his serious questions.
- 13:57And it was funny.
- 13:58And the athletes had fun with it, right?
- 14:00And I think that's fine.
- 14:02I know everybody makes a joke like,
- 14:04what's your favorite color?
- 14:06And nobody wants a whole interview with
- 14:10what's your favorite color.
- 14:11I think that's the point of making fun
- 14:13of that because that's what the show ended
- 14:14up being.
- 14:15But if you say like,
- 14:16what's your favorite Sesame Street
- 14:18character in the middle of a serious
- 14:20interview, it breaks the ice.
- 14:22It's funny for the audience.
- 14:24It catches the athlete off guard.
- 14:26When he asked Julie Foucher, hey,
- 14:28did you going faster help you win that
- 14:30race?
- 14:31Yeah.
- 14:32Right, like...
- 14:34It's a dumb question that we all know
- 14:36the answer to,
- 14:37but it makes the athlete feel more
- 14:40comfortable.
- 14:43We were talking about it over the weekend
- 14:45because it's been three years,
- 14:49I want to say,
- 14:49since Jameson got the tubes out of her
- 14:51ears.
- 14:52When they gave her the Versad and she
- 14:54started getting loopy, she asked Brad,
- 14:57the ENT, Dr. Brad,
- 15:00what's your favorite dinosaur?
- 15:02And like stuff like that.
- 15:04And he answered her, but like,
- 15:07while you're, like you said,
- 15:08while you're in the middle of it,
- 15:09you know, Hey, congratulations.
- 15:11That was super cool.
- 15:12Um, you know, you know, blah, blah,
- 15:14whatever.
- 15:15And then you just throw that kind of
- 15:16in there.
- 15:16It's like, and, uh,
- 15:18so what's your favorite dinosaur?
- 15:20Cause it's going to throw them off track
- 15:21and it's going to make them stop and
- 15:23make them go, oh, you're not just like,
- 15:25you're not just asking me, you know, oh,
- 15:27did you win because you went faster?
- 15:29Like, you know, right.
- 15:35Halftime coach interviews are just as
- 15:36dumb.
- 15:37You know,
- 15:39Ben Johnson got hammered last year because
- 15:42a reporter was asking, hey,
- 15:43you didn't play well in the first half.
- 15:45What are you going to do to get
- 15:46better?
- 15:46And he's like, we need to play better.
- 15:49And everybody bashed him for being curt.
- 15:52What else are you supposed to say?
- 15:55I would say what we're not going to
- 15:56do is what we did in the first
- 15:57half.
- 15:58Yeah.
- 15:59That approach didn't work,
- 16:01so we're going to try.
- 16:02The coach for the Boston Celtics gives the
- 16:07absolute best halftime and postgame
- 16:10interviews.
- 16:11And if you don't believe me,
- 16:13go look it up on Instagram.
- 16:15He's got clips for days because he answers
- 16:18stupid questions with stupid answers.
- 16:20Like,
- 16:20if you're going to ask me something
- 16:21ridiculous,
- 16:22I'm going to give you something ridiculous
- 16:23back.
- 16:24But does it straight face?
- 16:27Like, mm-hmm.
- 16:29And just tell them something stupid,
- 16:30and then just kind of look at them.
- 16:31And, yeah, it's fantastic.
- 16:38Yeah, I – Bill Belichick.
- 16:40Anyway, we're off on – well,
- 16:42we're always off on a tangent,
- 16:44but – It's fine.
- 16:47I just – and the more and more
- 16:50I think about, like, the game – like,
- 16:52I threw out that proposal to make the
- 16:54games better with only ten people making
- 16:56it.
- 16:57Of course,
- 16:58that means a season that makes sense with
- 17:01drama throughout the season.
- 17:03Now I'm to the point where maybe,
- 17:06just maybe, it should be an every-two,
- 17:09every-four-year event.
- 17:12And let the Wadapaloozas, the Rogues,
- 17:15the Metconrushes,
- 17:17and the Crash Crucibles have...
- 17:21couple years where they just get to be
- 17:23the the fun events that everybody goes to
- 17:26to train in the meantime right or to
- 17:28try to win prize money in the meantime
- 17:31and maybe absence would make the heart
- 17:33grow fonder again but you can't can't come
- 17:37back with the slop we had this year
- 17:40as a season if that's what you're going
- 17:42to do you know what i mean no
- 17:47i know exactly what you mean sorry i
- 17:48was reading john young's hairline
- 17:56uh uh don't think i disagree with someone
- 17:58more besides sporty beth are you
- 18:00disagreeing with me it would seem to be
- 18:03probably about the the ten person field i
- 18:08think every two years would probably be a
- 18:09better option every four years it's not
- 18:11the olympics um
- 18:15there's not enough fanfare.
- 18:15Does that make sense?
- 18:17Like for enough buildups to go, Ooh, yeah.
- 18:19Every, you know, every four years now, um,
- 18:22if it was going to do something like
- 18:23that, but again,
- 18:25it would have to have a whole lot
- 18:26of buildup, um, all,
- 18:29all the way up to it.
- 18:30Um, I just,
- 18:34it would have to make a whole lot
- 18:35more sense, especially then what,
- 18:36like one out of two things would happen.
- 18:40People like rogue or, um,
- 18:43WFP or Wadapalooza,
- 18:46step up and get better.
- 18:51And because CrossFit isn't there every
- 18:54year,
- 18:55CrossFit actually loses its relevance as
- 19:00the main sport.
- 19:03CrossFit will never lose its relevance as
- 19:05a methodology.
- 19:06Right.
- 19:08I firmly believe that.
- 19:10But as a sport, it's time.
- 19:13I think we're at the time where it
- 19:17is shit or get off the pot.
- 19:18They've got to figure it.
- 19:20Stop with the Band-Aids.
- 19:23The season needs to be fixed if you're
- 19:25going to stay a sport and run it
- 19:27from CrossFit.
- 19:32And I know we're celebrating twenty years
- 19:35and it's only twenty years.
- 19:36I don't know what Avera said here about
- 19:37twenty years.
- 19:39I was asking how do we get twenty
- 19:41years into the games and need a complete
- 19:42reset because because in two thousand
- 19:49eighteen we scrapped the thing that was
- 19:52working that just cost too much and
- 19:55instead of looking at it and find how
- 19:58do we do this more economically we threw
- 20:01it in the trash and we tried something
- 20:05new and then after a year of that
- 20:10the world shut down.
- 20:14So that got thrown in the trash.
- 20:17And then even with just every year since
- 20:20then, it's been let's try something new.
- 20:24But that's the problem, but not new,
- 20:25right?
- 20:26It's the same general format with a
- 20:30tweaking of this and that.
- 20:32And I think we're getting further away
- 20:34from what used to work.
- 20:37Then we are getting closer to what used
- 20:39to work.
- 20:45You're not wrong.
- 20:47There's no consistency.
- 20:51no consistency on how to get there there's
- 20:53no consistency on what it looks like when
- 20:54you get there there's no consistency on or
- 20:57very little consistency as far as when you
- 20:59get there but how you get there is
- 21:01definitely not the same as it's been any
- 21:03year and i know this isn't going to
- 21:06be a popular a popular i'm good at
- 21:10saying things that aren't popular lately
- 21:15crossfit was owned by a guy that didn't
- 21:17care about the sport yeah
- 21:21It wasn't private equity that sent us down
- 21:23this rabbit hole.
- 21:24It was Greg saying,
- 21:26regionals cost too much,
- 21:28we're throwing it in the garbage,
- 21:30and we're gonna go to this sanctional
- 21:32thing,
- 21:32and we're gonna take people from the open.
- 21:35And not only are we gonna take people
- 21:36from the open,
- 21:37we're gonna take one from every country in
- 21:39the world.
- 21:44We wanna spread the message of CrossFit to
- 21:47the globe.
- 21:48And I don't care about the sport.
- 21:50I care about spreading the message.
- 21:55And because of that,
- 21:56we've never been back on track.
- 21:59Just like this show.
- 22:05Now,
- 22:05private equity coming in two years later
- 22:08definitely didn't help the cause.
- 22:11And probably threw a couple more nails in
- 22:14the sport coffin.
- 22:24think maybe Greg did that knowing it might
- 22:26cause the games to crash out.
- 22:27I don't think that was his premise behind
- 22:30it.
- 22:30I truly thought he wanted it to be
- 22:33a global experience and spread CrossFit to
- 22:36those countries that didn't really have it
- 22:39and give some incentive to open a box
- 22:42in Uzbekistan.
- 22:46You know,
- 22:48All the people you saw on the floor
- 22:53for the workout or two they got to
- 22:55do at the games that would not
- 22:57necessarily,
- 22:58they get to call themselves a games
- 22:59athlete for the rest of their lives,
- 23:00first of all, because you made it.
- 23:03Doesn't matter about how the process has
- 23:05changed.
- 23:06They made it that year because that's what
- 23:08it was that year.
- 23:09And to a man,
- 23:11if you watched it live,
- 23:13you watched the people in documentary and
- 23:16whatnot,
- 23:17they all enjoyed the shit out of
- 23:19themselves.
- 23:20As they should have.
- 23:22The vast majority of them were taking it
- 23:24in and going, holy shit,
- 23:26I'm on the floor for this thing.
- 23:28The opening ceremony is when they brought
- 23:29everybody in with all the flags and stuff.
- 23:31First of all,
- 23:32it took about eight and a half hours.
- 23:34At least that's what it felt like.
- 23:36But that was something to see.
- 23:40that was a hell of a spectacle i
- 23:41don't even disagree that that that would
- 23:43have that may have worked i think there
- 23:47were way too many sanctionals and way too
- 23:50many like if then else statements for well
- 23:54because these three people already
- 23:55qualified for the games fourth place gets
- 23:58to go and then trying to explain that
- 24:00every week as another sanction one-off was
- 24:03difficult
- 24:06But I think with a little bit of
- 24:07refinement, that idea may have been okay.
- 24:12But it just was the precursor to
- 24:14everything going down the rabbit hole of
- 24:18getting away from a season that made
- 24:20sense.
- 24:23Because that season,
- 24:25as Pat Belner said it best,
- 24:29I think I qualified through,
- 24:32like he wasn't even real sure because of
- 24:35how convoluted it was that year.
- 24:38Princess says,
- 24:39this season really hasn't been that bad.
- 24:41We have one of the strongest fields in
- 24:42years.
- 24:44The end doesn't justify the means.
- 24:47Just because we have one of the strongest
- 24:49fields at the games doesn't mean the
- 24:51season wasn't bad.
- 24:58It's...
- 25:03It's just a mess.
- 25:04It's not even so much that the season
- 25:06itself was bad.
- 25:07It was a mess.
- 25:08You had people doing multiple, multiple
- 25:12Over, over consecutive weekends going, oh,
- 25:15I'm gonna, I can't do this one.
- 25:16So I'm gonna go to that one or
- 25:17no, I didn't make it here.
- 25:18So I'm gonna go here instead.
- 25:19Uh, and whatnot,
- 25:21which is pushing some other people who may
- 25:23have had an opportunity to go out and
- 25:26it just made it.
- 25:28It's been incredibly, oh,
- 25:29well this person, do they qualify here?
- 25:31No, they didn't qualify there.
- 25:32And they went to the one after that
- 25:33and qualify there.
- 25:34What about this?
- 25:35Nope.
- 25:35They didn't make it there.
- 25:36They made it online right here at the
- 25:37end.
- 25:38It's not so much that it's been bad.
- 25:40It's been a mess.
- 25:43And it's mostly a mess for us that
- 25:44have to try to make sense of it
- 25:46and report on it to everybody else who
- 25:48might also be having problems trying to
- 25:50follow it.
- 25:52I think it's bad because you have eleven
- 25:56organizations all writing their own book.
- 25:59Yeah.
- 26:00Okay,
- 26:01so you have one person writing a book
- 26:03for the Open and Quarterfinals.
- 26:06Then after that, you say, okay,
- 26:07you eleven people,
- 26:08you write your own version of what the
- 26:10middle of this book is going to look
- 26:12like.
- 26:13with eleven different writings and
- 26:16different styles.
- 26:19And now we're coming back to, okay,
- 26:20now the first author is going to take
- 26:23over and finish this off.
- 26:29So,
- 26:31and the piece you let the eleven people
- 26:35write,
- 26:36was the piece getting to the climax of
- 26:38the season?
- 26:42It's convoluted.
- 26:44That's the most important part of a book
- 26:47from what I understand,
- 26:48because I don't read anymore.
- 26:50But I hear that that's like getting to
- 26:53the climax is the most important thing in
- 26:56a lot of things, including writing a book.
- 26:59As it turns out,
- 27:01as another Clydesdale top tip, y'all.
- 27:03Yeah.
- 27:05Don't mess with the climax.
- 27:07Don't mess with the climax.
- 27:08It's pretty darn important.
- 27:12Um, personally,
- 27:13I knew at least a couple of people
- 27:14who discovered they had obscure
- 27:16citizenship from another country and
- 27:18managed to go to the games that year.
- 27:20Yeah.
- 27:24Yeah.
- 27:26But it's still,
- 27:29I do get the point where it gave
- 27:31the incentive for people from that country
- 27:34to look and go, Ooh,
- 27:36if I can just beat them,
- 27:37I know I can be our representative.
- 27:40Right.
- 27:45That's what she said.
- 27:47True word, Scott.
- 27:48Yep.
- 27:51Don't mess with the climax.
- 27:52That's the theme of today.
- 27:58Oh, one in nineteen.
- 28:00Once again,
- 28:01if you have find yourself with some time
- 28:03after the show is over with,
- 28:05go back and watch the first heat of
- 28:07first cut and watch Ben Smith just wading
- 28:10through the mass of humanity.
- 28:11That was that was that workout.
- 28:16And just that's your that's the opposite.
- 28:22of what we've been talking about with one
- 28:23lane for like one regular guy and then
- 28:26ten lanes for everybody else it's the it's
- 28:28the it was ten lanes of regular and
- 28:30one former games champion yeah
- 28:35One Ben Smith just,
- 28:36just that's my buddy Aaron described it as
- 28:40him just waiting through a massive
- 28:42humanity.
- 28:42Just, you know,
- 28:43while putting a smack down,
- 28:44everybody was there, but they would get,
- 28:45people get stopped at the,
- 28:47like at the squat snatches or they
- 28:48couldn't do, you know,
- 28:50more than one legless rope climb or
- 28:52whatnot.
- 28:52And Ben's just running through the entire
- 28:54thing.
- 28:55Good night.
- 28:56That was fantastic.
- 29:00I was there in twenty nineteen on the
- 29:01field judging.
- 29:02It was painful to watch.
- 29:05I'm not saying that is my ideal approach
- 29:07to getting back to a sports season.
- 29:12I'll tell you what, though,
- 29:13like a cut after every event was pretty
- 29:15wild.
- 29:17Cutting half the field after the first
- 29:19event, which I mean, granted,
- 29:21you were going from one hundred and fifty
- 29:24males, just males.
- 29:26And like now we're going to cut it
- 29:27to seventy five, which is still what?
- 29:31Two and a half times the games field,
- 29:32generally speaking.
- 29:34Like, that's still a lot.
- 29:34There's still a whole lot of people out
- 29:35there because people are bitching.
- 29:37Oh,
- 29:37they might come down here and only get
- 29:38to do one event.
- 29:39Yeah.
- 29:40And then there's still seventy five people
- 29:42doing the second one and they go cut
- 29:44again and they go cut again before they
- 29:46actually get down to the field size that
- 29:47they actually wanted to try to accommodate
- 29:49people.
- 29:52It was like American Idol on CrossFit.
- 29:55They would bring them into a room and
- 29:57put them in the bleachers.
- 29:59Okay, if your name's called,
- 30:00you've been cut.
- 30:02Because there were so many people you
- 30:04couldn't tell when you finished your heat,
- 30:06whether you were top-seventy-five or
- 30:08bottom-seventy-five.
- 30:09So they put them in a set of
- 30:10bleachers and said, all right,
- 30:11we're going to start reading names off.
- 30:15Now,
- 30:15I'm sure the guy that couldn't do the
- 30:17first rope climb knew he was getting cut.
- 30:19A hundred percent.
- 30:21Right.
- 30:21And I bet he didn't care.
- 30:25Whatever.
- 30:25I got to do a workout on the
- 30:27floor at the games as a games athlete.
- 30:29And some countries, like,
- 30:31sent there as a representative.
- 30:35Like, it wasn't all bad.
- 30:39I would take that over the last couple
- 30:41seasons.
- 30:42Yeah.
- 30:44Now,
- 30:44a lot of people got cut that we,
- 30:46you know, everybody's like, yeah,
- 30:48but what if Justin didn't make the games
- 30:50this year?
- 30:50And what if blah, blah, blah.
- 30:53Hell, Sarah got cut.
- 30:54Sam Briggs got cut.
- 30:55Brooke Wells got cut.
- 30:57It was savage.
- 30:59A lot of people did not make the
- 31:01finals, the final finals, the last day,
- 31:04whatever you want to call it.
- 31:05A lot of people.
- 31:08It was a great workout, Larry.
- 31:10It was fun to watch.
- 31:12It had cool elements.
- 31:15It was really fun to watch.
- 31:19Hell yeah.
- 31:20I think recognizing national champions is
- 31:22a good thing, but like the Olympics,
- 31:24if you don't meet the A standard,
- 31:26you don't qualify.
- 31:27Yeah, I get that.
- 31:32I get that.
- 31:33And yes, Vicky, it should be savage.
- 31:36Sport is savage.
- 31:39problem the only problem with what he's
- 31:40saying as far as meeting the a standard
- 31:42is what is the a standard right right
- 31:46because with crossfit being the nature of
- 31:49what it is like what what you're gonna
- 31:52say oh if you have a if you
- 31:53have a two-minute friend you got a
- 31:54two-thirty friend
- 31:56And how do you judge it?
- 31:57And how do you judge that?
- 31:59And what else do you add to it?
- 32:00Oh,
- 32:00if you got a five hundred pound deadlift.
- 32:02Event one.
- 32:03The reason I paused is because event one
- 32:05got us who the A standard was after
- 32:08event one.
- 32:08Right.
- 32:10Right.
- 32:10Everybody in that top seventy five could
- 32:12do workouts.
- 32:13Sure.
- 32:15Right.
- 32:17I mean,
- 32:18Matt Fraser famously said that was a
- 32:21perfect workout.
- 32:22Yeah.
- 32:26Don't get me started on standards, Corey.
- 32:30Settle down, Jude.
- 32:31Settle down.
- 32:34Lita says,
- 32:34great conversation with the girls
- 32:35yesterday, Scott,
- 32:37that the Masters doesn't feel like the
- 32:38games, but like just another comp,
- 32:41same feelings.
- 32:41I've had that for a while now.
- 32:43I know a lot of athletes that feel
- 32:45that way.
- 32:46They just want it to feel like they're
- 32:48a part of the games,
- 32:49and right now it feels very separate.
- 32:53And we're going to get into that later.
- 32:55Because next week will pretty much be
- 32:56preview.
- 33:00Well, maybe the end of this week,
- 33:01beginning of next week will be Masters.
- 33:04And then we'll get into the Elite after
- 33:06that.
- 33:07As hopefully we know more events.
- 33:08Because I think some events, one or more,
- 33:12are getting released today for the
- 33:13Masters.
- 33:13Supposedly today, yeah.
- 33:14Matter of fact, you said that earlier.
- 33:20People should at least know in advance
- 33:22that they could get cut after one event
- 33:24because letting them know after they
- 33:26bought their tickets seemed like a low
- 33:28blow to me.
- 33:31They had to.
- 33:32I get what you're saying, Lito.
- 33:34I get it.
- 33:35Just like they should have told the
- 33:36Masters they have tickets for the whole
- 33:37weekend before they bought new ones.
- 33:40That would have been a nice...
- 33:42thing to do too um but you had
- 33:46to know if you were one of a
- 33:47hundred and seventy or a hundred and fifty
- 33:50you weren't making it too many events i
- 33:56don't think you had much i don't think
- 34:01a realistic human being
- 34:03can look at it and go,
- 34:05they're sending a hundred and fifty of us
- 34:07there for a thing that lasts.
- 34:10What was it that year?
- 34:11Four days, five days, something like that.
- 34:14And we're going to be there all weekend
- 34:16because I am, you know,
- 34:18I am the representative from wherever,
- 34:22you know, pick a country.
- 34:24And I am not Matt Fraser, Pat Vellner,
- 34:28Scott Pancheck, whoever.
- 34:31I'm just some dude,
- 34:32and I got to come because I'm the
- 34:33best crossfitter in my small,
- 34:36obscure country.
- 34:37I am not going to be here all
- 34:38weekend.
- 34:40You'd have to have that conversation,
- 34:41at least with yourself,
- 34:42if you're being any sort of realistic.
- 34:44You're not going there thinking,
- 34:46wipe the floor with these fools.
- 34:47I'm going to be here all, you know.
- 34:53I don't see that.
- 34:55You know what never gets cut?
- 34:58thirdsy from my nighttime routine very
- 35:02nice dude last night nine hours of sleep

- 35:57Stickers.
- 35:59Yes, sir.
- 35:59New stickers for the games.
- 36:02Love it.
- 36:03Clydesdale getting jazzed.
- 36:07The manging on that horse is like,
- 36:09that is some flow right there.
- 36:11It is, man.
- 36:11You got it built on for some reason.
- 36:13I like that.
- 36:14yeah that's that's old school like joe

- 37:00i know you're a dog he is a
- 37:02dog that is a fact
- 37:05uh old lito oh and by the way
- 37:07legends have already missed one of their
- 37:08deadlines as they told us in an email
- 37:10we were supposed to have the total number
- 37:11of events before july six scott you know
- 37:14what date it is today uh listen they
- 37:17gave me media credentials and i'm trying
- 37:21to patch relationships so i'll let let you
- 37:25and lito have this conversation just
- 37:28saying my buddy chris told me the same
- 37:30thing not the same thing was i'm similarly
- 37:32said it'll probably be late tonight
- 37:36Yeah.
- 37:38Look, from past experience,
- 37:41I've been there twice,
- 37:42and it's par for the course.
- 37:46This is on brand.
- 37:51Joseph,
- 37:51I will sign one for you if that's
- 37:53what you need.
- 37:56There you go.
- 37:57Legends are fantastic.
- 38:00Lito, huh?
- 38:02Legends are fantastic.
- 38:03Lito knows what side the bread is buttered
- 38:08on before she puts it in the toaster.
- 38:10It's fine.
- 38:13Jacob says, Joseph has that dog in him.
- 38:15That's why he's asking.
- 38:17Joseph does have that dog in him.
- 38:18He does.
- 38:19Dude's fit, man.
- 38:22He's big dog.
- 38:25Not little dog.
- 38:26There's one thing on this planet.
- 38:30I love dogs.
- 38:31Big fan of dogs.
- 38:32Big, big fan of dogs.
- 38:34If your dog yips,
- 38:35I don't want it anywhere near me.
- 38:39Mine is smaller, but does not yip.
- 38:43I don't give a shit how big it
- 38:44is,
- 38:45but if it just goes bananas when you
- 38:48walk in the house and just all of
- 38:50that.
- 38:51No, thank you.
- 38:53It would have been awesome if they had
- 38:55planned the Masters podium ceremony to
- 38:58happen during the Friday opening ceremony.
- 39:02I get the sentiment,
- 39:03and I like the sentiment because that
- 39:04would feel like you're part of the thing.
- 39:09In the past, when it was at Madison,
- 39:11they brought all the Masters podium people
- 39:14out on the floor when they did the
- 39:15podium for the elites and the teams.
- 39:21They got to get twenty events in in
- 39:23four days.
- 39:25Yeah.
- 39:26I am betting this will be one of
- 39:27the shortest opening ceremonies you have
- 39:30ever seen.
- 39:32And they've got to draw balls out of
- 39:34a hopper and show what those balls are
- 39:37going to be by when they put them
- 39:38in.
- 39:38It's mostly why I made sure I came
- 39:44on today was for the ball talk.
- 39:47It's all about climax and balls, man.
- 39:49Climax and ball talk, baby.
- 39:50That's what we do here on Clyzeo.
- 39:55I'll say one last thing.
- 39:56Last year when they partnered with Pitt,
- 39:57communication was at least fantastic.
- 40:00We even had a group chat.
- 40:08Again,
- 40:09I just got media credentials about twenty
- 40:12five minutes ago.
- 40:15And try not to get revoked.
- 40:18Yeah.
- 40:18And not to get revoked.
- 40:19That's all there is to it.
- 40:21So I'm going to,
- 40:22I'm on a moratorium for the next two
- 40:24and a half weeks ish.
- 40:26And I'll probably blow that in a day
- 40:28or two,
- 40:28but it depends on what happens for now.
- 40:29It depends on what happens the next twenty
- 40:31four hours from being completely honest
- 40:33here.
- 40:34I mean, I may just say, hey,
- 40:35I'll just take Shanna's coaching badge and
- 40:37screw it and blow it out in a
- 40:39week or two.
- 40:40You have to have a backup plan.
- 40:43Always a plan B.
- 40:45Always got to have a plan B.
- 40:47I don't give a damn what Savant says.
- 40:48How about no plan B?
- 40:49No, no, no.
- 40:49We got a plan B.
- 40:52It's a contingency plan.
- 40:54Let's call it that.
- 40:54We don't call it plan B. Fine.
- 40:56Contingency plan.
- 40:58soon as the proverbial it's the proverbial
- 41:02fan then all of a sudden i'm shanna's
- 41:04coach no big deal moving on moving on
- 41:06my life uh damn that's a lot of
- 41:11ball handling yeah you know it yeah but
- 41:18when you show the balls and you throw
- 41:22them in and you pull them out
- 41:26That gets us to the climax of the
- 41:28Hopper event later that night.
- 41:31Ginny is definitely clipping that.
- 41:32Right?
- 41:36Yeah.
- 41:37I'm just stating facts.
- 41:38It is.
- 41:41How you interpret those facts,
- 41:42that's on you.
- 41:47Dave said there will be more than five
- 41:49events on Wednesday.
- 41:54More than five scores for sure.
- 41:57I was about to say, yeah,
- 41:57if he's got some of the five,
- 41:59you know,
- 41:59the fifty point things going on and
- 42:00whatnot, then, yeah, I could see that.
- 42:04Keep people moving.
- 42:04Hey, we got to go.
- 42:05We got to go.
- 42:05We got to go.
- 42:06We're going to run through.
- 42:06We're going to run through all of this
- 42:08stuff.
- 42:11Oh, yeah.
- 42:12And we drink from the back end by
- 42:13accident.
- 42:15That's that's bad, too.
- 42:17Oh.
- 42:22It's fine.
- 42:30Avera,
- 42:30what I will say about bashing CrossFit for
- 42:33Masters is why does everybody, well,
- 42:38I don't know.
- 42:40We'll talk about that later.
- 42:41I have issues with CrossFit and Masters.
- 42:46It should be a seamless story from open
- 42:49to games,
- 42:50no matter what division you're in.
- 42:51And we don't have that.
- 42:53And that's where that responsibility is on
- 42:56CrossFit.
- 42:57to come up with a plan to give
- 43:02a seamless story.
- 43:04And the example I used last night,
- 43:06you don't start reading the Martian and
- 43:08halfway through flip to project Hail Mary.
- 43:13Oh God, no, please don't do that.
- 43:14Project Hail Mary was so good.
- 43:17the martian was so good but you know
- 43:19but the half and half together would be
- 43:21utterly terrible well it would be two
- 43:23different things completely that you tried
- 43:26to match together and it would not work
- 43:30because it's two separate stories so
- 43:32that's where crossfit needs to step in and
- 43:35say we are telling this story for the
- 43:38season and it needs to be a story
- 43:44That's the main component we've lost since
- 43:47twenty eighteen.
- 43:49CrossFit does not control the story.
- 43:54Because they've handed it off, right?
- 43:57They've handed it off.
- 43:58And the problem with that is,
- 44:00as I'm thinking about it right now,
- 44:01is that once you hand it off and
- 44:03you say, okay, well, you guys do this,
- 44:06y'all do that, whatever the case may be,
- 44:09is that they're handing it off without
- 44:11saying, and this is how it should go.
- 44:14This is what you need to focus on
- 44:15at this point so that when we get
- 44:17to this point that we take the wheel
- 44:19back,
- 44:22that it's not going to be so disjointed.
- 44:27And it's going to make sense and the
- 44:28right people are going to make it.
- 44:30And, oh, you know,
- 44:31and I say the right people to make
- 44:33it,
- 44:33the fittest people are going to make it
- 44:35for the most part.
- 44:37You might, you're going to have some,
- 44:38some weird shit going on from,
- 44:39from time to time.
- 44:40I'm sure.
- 44:41But without that middle part of
- 44:43communication, Hey, look, this is what,
- 44:45this is how the,
- 44:46this is how the entire season is going
- 44:48to go.
- 44:48If you're handing it off to those people,
- 44:49you give that part away from it.
- 44:54I have a one-thirty meeting and I need
- 44:55to eat lunch,
- 44:56so I'm going to head out,
- 44:57but I want to leave with this.
- 44:59I've been complaining about, you know,
- 45:01I am a former swimmer.
- 45:04The no dive, no flip turn has been,
- 45:07has hurt my heart a lot.
- 45:09Hey,
- 45:09if you want to hurt it even more,
- 45:10I have a video of me practicing a
- 45:12flip turn and I can send that to
- 45:13you.
- 45:18Anyway,
- 45:19I've been trying to explain why my heart
- 45:21hurts about it.
- 45:22And it was said much better on the
- 45:25Rich Froning podcast today.
- 45:27So I want to play that real quick.
- 45:29Sure.
- 45:33And I'm probably a really poor diver.
- 45:35But if you're not going to allow flip
- 45:36turns and dives,
- 45:37we should all have a single speed bike.
- 45:39Yeah.
- 45:40It's the same idea.
- 45:41Do we have to know how to shift
- 45:43gears on a bike?
- 45:43Is that something that's going to be
- 45:45important for us?
- 45:46That's a great question.
- 45:51I don't know the model.
- 45:52I know the type,
- 45:53but I don't know the exact model.
- 45:55It's probably going to have,
- 45:57you're probably going to have to have some
- 45:58basic knowledge on how to shift.
- 45:59We can do that.
- 46:00Yes.
- 46:04So taking that away from someone who has
- 46:10worked on those skills is like taking that
- 46:13away from a cyclist who is,
- 46:15who knows how to shift gears.
- 46:22My bike analogy finally, I'm vindicated.
- 46:26Yeah.
- 46:28I just, and that was by Andrew Hillers.
- 46:31I want to give the right credit out.
- 46:34Um,
- 46:35but it was clipped from a Dave interview
- 46:37with Rachel Noel and the rich running
- 46:40podcast.
- 46:42Um,
- 46:46I cannot fathom who doesn't know how to
- 46:48shift gears.
- 46:49Lito,
- 46:50you would be surprised if you come to
- 46:52Birmingham,
- 46:54they had a whole thing like before people
- 46:56got, whenever you got there checking,
- 46:57you could go sit on the bike and
- 46:59they had people that would take you
- 47:00through it.
- 47:02Okay, look,
- 47:03press this one and it upshifts.
- 47:05And if you press this other one,
- 47:06it go back and downshift.
- 47:07If it upshifts,
- 47:09they had a whole thing about it.
- 47:10I didn't do it because it's a newer
- 47:12model of the exact same bike I've been
- 47:14riding for the past three years.
- 47:16But you would be surprised.
- 47:19How many people hadn't even ridden a bike?
- 47:23Yeah, look, there you go.
- 47:26Shelly did two days before Magic Games.
- 47:31There it is.
- 47:34And listen, like you,
- 47:39you have a background.
- 47:41CrossFit is about this multiple aspect
- 47:44fitness competition.
- 47:46And people come from different
- 47:48backgrounds.
- 47:49People were gymnasts,
- 47:50which for them doing a bar muscle up
- 47:53or a ring muscle up is a piece
- 47:55of cake.
- 47:57They shouldn't be put at a disadvantage
- 47:59because of their background.
- 48:04That's my only point.
- 48:06It's valid, though.
- 48:08The one thing...
- 48:12It's more about the reason that Dave gave
- 48:14that it's a competitive advantage.
- 48:17If they said,
- 48:18can't dive because of safety or something
- 48:21like that... Yeah, it's a three-foot pool.
- 48:25Sorry, you can't dive.
- 48:27Makes sense to me.
- 48:29But a flip turn is just...
- 48:31It's not dangerous.
- 48:33is when i do it not to anybody
- 48:38not to anybody else but me let me
- 48:40go ahead and clarify that and angelo said
- 48:43like i can do one but air's too
- 48:45important to me and i want to stop
- 48:46and get a good deep breath before i
- 48:49go i don't it just is dumb man
- 48:53it's just i i will not be okay
- 48:56with this and the and the explanation ever
- 49:00There is no good explanation.
- 49:02It's like they said.
- 49:03It's like you've been riding bikes all
- 49:05your life, and you ride mountain bikes,
- 49:07and you do it.
- 49:09Ricky, perfect example.
- 49:11We talked about it the other day.
- 49:13Ricky is also a really good high-level
- 49:15mountain biker.
- 49:18Sorry, Rick.
- 49:19We're going to give you a single speed
- 49:21bike because you'd be too fast on one
- 49:24with gears.
- 49:25Sorry.
- 49:25Just got to add to that.
- 49:30Johnny is allergic to peanuts,
- 49:31so nobody can bring in treats for the
- 49:33class on their birthday.
- 49:35Yeah.
- 49:35All right.
- 49:36Good point of error.
- 49:41Now my Gen X is just going to
- 49:43start showing.
- 49:46Yeah.
- 49:50Nobody in the eighth grade was allergic to
- 49:53fucking peanuts.
- 49:53I'm sorry.
- 49:55That's a whole different thing.
- 49:57Larry Young.
- 49:59I've hit so many home runs,
- 50:00dunked basketballs,
- 50:01and all would be considered advantages.
- 50:04We will never see anything like that,
- 50:05but running seems fair game.
- 50:07Just kidding.
- 50:09Yeah.
- 50:09All right.
- 50:11With that, guys,
- 50:12I need to go get something to eat.
- 50:14I hope you guys have a great rest
- 50:15of your day.
- 50:16We will be back tomorrow.
- 50:19Maybe.
- 50:22I will be.
- 50:23Scott will do it.
- 50:24Definitely will be.
- 50:25I'm fifty fifty at this point.
- 50:26Depends on if I got to work all
- 50:28I got to take.
- 50:29All right, guys.
- 50:30Hope to see you then.
