- 0:41Hamster with a blunt penknife the Doctor Who commentary
- 0:45podcast a conspiracy is afoot. And Inferno is about to be set
- 0:52and me, and mr. Peter along for the ride, Peter,
- 0:55how you doing? Yeah, good.
- 0:57Yeah. I'm just eager to see the
- 1:00finale, the grand finale and picking ask you a question, but
- 1:04it's not actually about you. It's about your offer off.
- 1:07Yes, Matthew. That's right.
- 1:10Matthew. If you listen to this, if you
- 1:14are listen to this, skip the next five minutes.
- 1:16I've got everything inflammatory.
- 1:18It's all right now, joking. He's non-fan, isn't he?
- 1:24No, it's just not as it's not like you see, I think, So we are
- 1:31also, we always talk about the fact that I, he has to Doctor
- 1:35Who I Am to James Bond in the bike.
- 1:38I've seen them all, I like them, but I'm not like a die-hard.
- 1:45And I think he soon the majority of classic who I think.
- 1:48I'm right. In saying the still when the
- 1:49collection sets the clutch that they come out and blue area is
- 1:53the odd one, that is, all I've done it.
- 1:55I've actually seen this one but I think it sort of lost count of
- 1:58what you see and what hasn't, And for example, I stuck the
- 2:03Romans on, when I was around his yesterday or the other room, the
- 2:06first episode, the runs anywhere and it was all, yeah, we did
- 2:09watch this, watch this like, six months ago.
- 2:11So, alright. Okay.
- 2:12And that's because we won the way to meet Maureen, O'Brien on
- 2:17the Mega Bus and I'm sure that we watch the rest of you on the
- 2:19way down. And some, you have definitely
- 2:22seen the rescue before probably on DVD.
- 2:24Well, definitely do. But the quillion revolution,
- 2:30which I won't give away in this podcast in case any more 60s
- 2:35boiler here in verse 31 the the quillion revolution to
- 2:39completely floored him and I'm just like who else could it be?
- 2:43Yeah but who done it with one possible suspect?
- 2:48Yeah I guess it could be one of the died or onions die.
- 2:52Don't die dorian's but yeah I think it's very interesting that
- 2:57it's a bit like with my parents mind.
- 3:00I don't know particular that. He will not remember that
- 3:04certain people have been a new who and he's seen every new who,
- 3:09but I think it's that sort of the differentiation between a
- 3:13casual fun and a fun firm and did he lie this that he enjoyed.
- 3:18I remember I remember him like in it.
- 3:19Yeah, I think that we We have the subtitles are other
- 3:26Productions hotels that on yesterday and I think we're
- 3:29mostly talking off topic with it on in the background but I think
- 3:34I remember him speaking quite highly of it.
- 3:36I think that because he was at the show that is more familiar
- 3:39with. I think he's very familiar with
- 3:40sort of McCauley and the new Siri I think he's much more
- 3:44clued up still on the mats with a theory than I am.
- 3:49So as it's astonishing, you know, we've your part of my
- 3:52ex-husband I was with Stay in years, okay, never a fan of dogs
- 3:56who are tall but watched a lot of it just you know 16 years.
- 4:00So long time and the amount of knowledge that you absorb, I
- 4:04remember it's like 10 years ago. You can name pretty much every
- 4:07companion in order to what they take kid on my job or your the
- 4:11same with James Bond them. Well, yeah, I mean I could
- 4:15probably of named every film but I think I think it's just that
- 4:18repetition. The repetition of how much
- 4:20you're exposed to her and it's like, isn't a with, I watched
- 4:27her queries for for the first time in about a year ago and of
- 4:31course, is that yes. The original yearning.
- 4:34Of course, there's Vince the main character.
- 4:37He knows that the other guy isn't for him because he can't
- 4:42recite all the Doctor Who's and then he does.
- 4:45And then yeah and then the second one is called the dickish
- 4:51character played by novel Sakura.
- 4:53Groans. Yes.
- 4:54So he can recite them all in the ball to pull my gun doesn't
- 4:57count. Yeah.
- 5:00What was this time with thing? Yeah.
- 5:03But yeah, it's definitely a, just how much you can pick up
- 5:07and how much you're actually too.
- 5:08And it was a real element B. Well, I'll tell you what, I'm in
- 5:10the most deadliest situation of all I am in a relationship with
- 5:13another Doctor Who fan. Mmm, I mean, is any
- 5:16conversation? Could be the end of this thing?
- 5:19Are you as enthused about, do you have similar?
- 5:23Who tastes? Yes and no, we both really love
- 5:29audio who. So that's really nice because
- 5:32it's not just on the talk about that.
- 5:34But when it comes to TV who he is, he likes sort of Terry
- 5:39Nation, sort of unpretentious adventurous style done and
- 5:46that's not to insult because I've got so I like things are a
- 5:49bit more layer or Nuance, but that's not sure.
- 5:52He does like those things as well.
- 5:53It's time for all of us learned hates the G Williams era and I
- 5:57really love it and it's like the him his podcast has just reached
- 6:01that era right? Because I'm claiming a victory
- 6:05every time Sarah to loves a gray and William story.
- 6:09Not when I think the Korean really like my life is the key
- 6:13that I'm here but I'm not so keen on the series a the side.
- 6:18I love 17. But if it fails I've been here
- 6:21almost she loved invisible enemy.
- 6:22Can you believe that? So thank you for that.
- 6:55Welcome going to count as in. Let's do it over here.
- 6:58Three, two one infernal. Yes, which is another example of
- 7:07confused, like episode titles and story titles.
- 7:11Duplicating, is there more? Oh well, now isn't it hot in the
- 7:16hot and move this dimensions? In time dimensions of time.
- 7:20Okay there's a there's also I'm sure one of the one of the
- 7:25episodes of the Daleks one of the little ones.
- 7:30Is it the rescue? I think there's a real hard
- 7:32there isn't. Yeah you're right various Q is
- 7:36episode 5 or 6 of the Dalek something and using Star Trek
- 7:40start doing that. You know it off topic again is
- 7:44new new kurtzman Trek. A started doing episode titles
- 7:47of Love original series episode just to confuse you they do it.
- 7:50Just don't know why people that are sweating.
- 7:53This is the only thing this sort of thing.
- 7:54You know, as a fan though isn't it the average person notice it
- 7:58normally happened like this. There's other stories where you
- 8:03assume something like, power of the doctor, you just assume it's
- 8:06something they've done before from, because the casual fun,
- 8:08it's just quite a generic, but in that instance, quite filling.
- 8:14Yeah. You know what, right, the last
- 8:17commentary I did before this was Vengeance on varis, right.
- 8:20And I had to still win it, and he was absolutely.
- 8:22Solutely getting off every time somebody was being tortured or
- 8:26her, okay. And now I'm watching this with
- 8:28me I'm starting to wonder if this is a finger of Doctor Who
- 8:29villains. You know he's getting off on the
- 8:32fact that these two are going at each other brutally as well.
- 8:37Well, I suppose it's very we stopping a bit like Game of
- 8:41Thrones just bloodthirstiness and you making a direct link
- 8:45between the Romans of Doctor Who and Game of Thrones.
- 8:48No I don't think I don't think it's possible to make a direct
- 8:50link. This is that bit though in a
- 8:54minute where we are the The Miss misdirection with what he's
- 9:01doing with the sword. Oh you think he's going to stop
- 9:05Barbara, don't you? Because she's yeah.
- 9:07Wow, yeah that's quite that's why tens as well isn't it and
- 9:12she screams as well. It's one of those, it's a little
- 9:15bit like the do this with cliff and sometimes where I think the
- 9:19mind of evil were The doctor looks at the doctor gets shot or
- 9:26that all the doctor might be enjoy.
- 9:27Get shot but it's actually the Brigadier shoot in the villain
- 9:30who's holding the doctor and drink very much Peter but you
- 9:32think you could arrive before the nick of time those you said
- 9:38thank you very much for spoiling.
- 9:39A cliffhanger resolution of the case.
- 9:45That is one thing we talked about absorbing knowledge.
- 9:48As Doctor Who fans these useless quotes that you can put into any
- 9:52situation. Equation.
- 9:53Yes, amount of times I've said that live forever as a deaf.
- 9:56Was it your classic example of the inverse ratio between the
- 9:59size of the mouth and the size of the bright light of use that
- 10:01at work during I have you back up and you know what people go
- 10:04oh what a point it's just been slapped doesn't even wobble now
- 10:17and it's called a big finish. Yes, we can express such an
- 10:19expressive first Yeah. And you know, I love the fact
- 10:25that his Christianity. They wait till his last seen his
- 10:29last moment and really sure. Yeah.
- 10:31Yeah. Well, he says, goodbye much.
- 10:33Because that was until that point you're like, well, why is
- 10:34he being so yeah, obviously Bobby fancy there.
- 10:38Yeah. Well that's what butter Barber
- 10:39assumes, understandably. Did you see that perspective?
- 10:43Shot Corridor. Then I was really works.
- 10:47This is the times where they're sort of its like, the Daleks.
- 10:51City, the corridor going off in the distance and it isn't
- 10:54really. It isn't often very convincing.
- 10:56You know what I love though? Is those painted scenery battle
- 11:01off. So they do like the Aztecs with
- 11:03the temple. Yeah, I know obviously, you know
- 11:05exactly what it is. But I just I love the effort
- 11:09that goes into it. Yeah and I feel like you could
- 11:11only get away with it in black and white.
- 11:14Well, do you remember time fly? When they go back to prehistoric
- 11:17Earth and they try and do that - yeah.
- 11:19And with that, the tempo in the background or something.
- 11:23Yeah, another time that it isn't great is controversial.
- 11:27I think caves of androzani. When the do the office with the
- 11:31purpley blue sky and it's like a cityscape outside.
- 11:36And you just like, with every time, Camera moves.
- 11:39Yeah, what it just it feels very flat doesn't it?
- 11:42Mmm and I think it's like it's like the corridor if the camera
- 11:46moved ever so slightly to the right or to the left it wouldn't
- 11:48have been convincing and but you know we're watching TV we know
- 11:51we're watching something that's been constructed for our viewing
- 11:54pleasure but I feel like the ambition that they had in the
- 11:5860s to do, Aztec temples to do, like vortice and the moons and
- 12:04all that in the background, I think it's really impressive.
- 12:09They kind of know you're going to go along with it, you know.
- 12:12Hmm. I suppose you much more at was
- 12:14TVs and you are medium, you you more like it, take that leap of
- 12:18faith and I guess a lot of TV, when you watch stuff from the
- 12:2150s, is there a so much more stagy?
- 12:25Where is this sort of that in-between stage player and
- 12:29something to film a drama on film?
- 12:32I saw it to you though. Hmm.
- 12:35I prefer I think I prefer Installment says when they were
- 12:41a little more heightened and a little less naturalistic I
- 12:45thought everybody a lot of people just just act in the same
- 12:48way now and then I get a bit bored with the acting, where is
- 12:53it in the second, we've been watching, Oliver Twist the
- 12:57Terrance dicks, produce Oliver, Twist from the sensor and the
- 13:01performances are just all the little theatrical, mmm, that
- 13:05their vivid and dramatic and Unforgettable.
- 13:08Whereas, I think of that was played.
- 13:09Now, it would like very down-to-earth.
- 13:12I remember there was a couple of Christmases ago.
- 13:15There was a Stephen Grimm in it was the guy who I think did this
- 13:21is England lost. Possibly they like director or
- 13:24writer and it was A Christmas Carol but gritty Christmas Carol
- 13:28and it was Victoria and everything, but was just like
- 13:32it's just too Bleak as an artist but they did have never watched
- 13:40the DVD for it was all shot as if it was like a modern-day
- 13:45conspiracy Thriller with all these outside hand, held camera
- 13:48work and all of this. And I was so distracted with how
- 13:51it was made. I'm just really focusing on
- 13:54those current Carey Mulligan was in, it wasn't sure thing.
- 13:56Yeah, the cast was incredible. I don't know, give me William
- 14:00Hartnell on a wobbly. Weak.
- 14:03Oh, this is the bit where he realizes.
- 14:07He's supposed to murder Nero. What is it?
- 14:13He says killdeer. Oh, I beg your pardon.
- 14:20Honestly your heart up kick. It was this extraordinary?
- 14:25It's so high. It's so high pitched.
- 14:27It's usually what he said there. So I'm a would-be murderer.
- 14:30A my beloved. There's definitely a shift in
- 14:36the he's in full sitcom mode now.
- 14:38Hmm. Oh and you want to see bloody
- 14:41camp. This scene between him and Nero.
- 14:44Oh Max dropping my friends. I like the the glasses, the
- 14:52glasses that very rarely come out so strategically positioned
- 14:57I mean it's not beyond the Realms of possibility, is it?
- 15:01No, I love that. I love the so I feel like I just
- 15:07think it would pull guys from the but I'm just I'm go silent
- 15:09when I'm just so glad portal but don't you worry I can talk for
- 15:13two of us, don't worry. I think what I really like about
- 15:18Nero is even though he is like totally a fast cool character,
- 15:24it's a little bit dangerous. So in a minute it might you need
- 15:27You don't know what he's going to do, they like?
- 15:30Okay, so I can ha I'm gonna I'm gonna kill you and put you in
- 15:34the arena and the lines are going to eat you.
- 15:35How dare you burn my plans and then he's like, brilliant, turn
- 15:41on a sixpence. The historian on the documentary
- 15:45said that it was more than likely an accident because
- 15:48apparently there were fires all the time in Rome and strong
- 15:51winds. So fires would spread rather a
- 15:56deliberate act on Nero's part. But that's not perhaps as
- 15:59dramatically satisfying, no There's a lot of flames going on
- 16:05in our state. Yeah, it definitely Maureen
- 16:07O'Brien, Jake. She's grabbing the the, the
- 16:10curtain and she's flipping the curtain against the Flames.
- 16:14Do you ever remember that scene in blue Peter where they had the
- 16:17kids all around the fire in the studio and then it all got bit
- 16:20out of hands. I think I've seen on a clip show
- 16:23and everyone looks a bit palette because they killed their cute
- 16:25trying to sing the carols. Like it's very on some Channel
- 16:285. When TV goes slightly wrong, but
- 16:32I love those. Live out.
- 16:35The scene was filmed a lot of them during lockdown with like
- 16:39celebrities who are slightly above all this their homes and
- 16:43you'll get like, I don't know, Judi Dench, or somebody probably
- 16:50not Judi Dench on Channel 5, but like, just looking straight down
- 16:53the camera over webcam and seeing what she thinks about
- 16:56Morecambe and wise or something like that.
- 17:01Look at this. You heard me.
- 17:03I said, get your hands off me. It's a Hot Wheels charge in it,
- 17:08no matter where he is. He but that I think that's in
- 17:12stark contrast to trou and who when he comes along, he just
- 17:15sort of bumbles his way through the stories clever as mad in the
- 17:18story. But not treated, half as
- 17:22seriously. Here we go, he's going to burn.
- 17:25All of Rome. Yeah, it's a it's a big blooming
- 17:29flame, isn't it? Like Yeah, that's not even like
- 17:33a torch, it looks like a genuine piece of paper.
- 17:35He's holding the sprinklers are not going off in the studio of
- 17:39the display and the truth is pure back.
- 17:41Then the safety mostly just wear a little less.
- 17:46That is true. It's a conscious.
- 17:51So we've got is everybody here now.
- 17:53Is everybody at the palace? We've got Barbara's here as the
- 17:57slave coming. It's like in the courtyard, I
- 17:59think. And obviously the doctrine It
- 18:02here but they still have me that not all of them.
- 18:04No, no will in and barbarous know, Vicki in the doctor don't
- 18:09necessarily know that Ian and Barbara there and that's the
- 18:12joke in the final scene. Oh yeah, what is it?
- 18:16Such youthful exuberance. Yeah.
- 18:18Can cause the man lazy bones or something since you've enjoyed
- 18:22resting about so much you probably want to go back to the
- 18:25Tar Pits. The always had that shot you
- 18:28were talking about From Below. Yeah.
- 18:30Yeah that's really impressive. What I was going to follow the
- 18:35money, I was gonna ask you your opinion on the other
- 18:40Christopher, Barry directed stories.
- 18:43So if I list them one after another hit my head, so the
- 18:49Daleks Good apart from the Richard, Martin episodes.
- 18:55That's very fair, the rescue. Love it, the Romans loved it.
- 19:02Oh, we obviously, that we'd swipe the weird swipe across the
- 19:05screen a bit like Star Wars, if not.
- 19:08No, I missed it. So it's the bit where in and El
- 19:12Estilo. So every name is that when they
- 19:14join the other torchbearers and there's this weird sort of
- 19:18Transition where instead of a fear That's All wipes across the
- 19:22screen but it's very undoctored. Who Akana?
- 19:28You will need a rewind. Yes not now but yeah sorry back
- 19:32and have a look what if you got to to the Romans.
- 19:37The Savages. Yes.
- 19:40But I probably can't like really judge the direction but I think
- 19:47the story is good. Yeah.
- 19:49Power of the Daleks. Yes, you lied.
- 19:53Yeah. Okay.
- 19:54I think I think that's except controversial.
- 19:56I think six episodes as possibly a bit of a stretch.
- 20:00It's not, like I wanna see what's next.
- 20:03Oh, the demons. Love it.
- 20:06All-time top three. Oh wow.
- 20:09Okay, the the mutants Silence speaks volumes.
- 20:19It's just very white and clinical again, I think it's
- 20:22just it's way more of a story thing to your soul.
- 20:24Just too long in it. Robot.
- 20:29That's fine. Yeah, that's right.
- 20:33A Mobius, really good? Yeah.
- 20:36And finally, of all of it, I think of all these Classics have
- 20:40gone through preaching from the pier.
- 20:43I absolutely love the Creature from the bit.
- 20:45Actually, I realize the direction and especially the
- 20:47film sections. Amazing only the jungle, and the
- 20:53even, like the stuff down, like the creature, like, fair enough
- 20:56the creature, but what can you do with our crew?
- 20:58Suture. I think he does his best.
- 21:01Yeah, I mean important turn on the lights off and going a bit
- 21:05magma beast and I don't know. But you know what?
- 21:08That is a real idiosyncratic collection of stories there.
- 21:12Hmm different tones. Different lengths, different
- 21:16doctors different areas gives you such like a smorgasbord of
- 21:20different. Yea like I said like the tones
- 21:22and Different eras. I think that's a very good crop
- 21:27selection. I think he's I think he's a good
- 21:29eater. So Barry, I think you can or
- 21:30mother and your raffinose jungle scenes, increase from the pair.
- 21:35I probably as a child will be convinced that was outside.
- 21:38Hmm. Connection with talked about the
- 21:45fact that this is obviously filmed in a little corners of
- 21:47Studios, but the I actually think the, the stock footage and
- 21:51everything is quite well, integrated and it like it
- 21:55establishes, right? There's waves.
- 21:57It's the say there's, it's quite certainly done, but not in a way
- 22:03where Clegg sometimes you get stock footage, the like is too
- 22:06much of a juxtaposition with what then comes.
- 22:09We as, you know, remember Android Invasion when a show you
- 22:11a stock footage of a NASA Shuttle and then I got to a
- 22:15dreadful model that yeah, what's going on?
- 22:20That's not him. Is it?
- 22:20That's Focus for Barry. That's very less.
- 22:24Very, let's our side. But you know what?
- 22:30When you think about this story as a whole though, oh hang on.
- 22:32There's a bit where he's holding his cross showing that, he's a
- 22:35Christian man. That's nice.
- 22:39I think that's a really nice character B, right?
- 22:41Yeah. All that the Flames are like
- 22:42sort of going off and when stuff the other bit, which I think we
- 22:46just missed was while in a barber escape and evens.
- 22:52Me it with his flaming torch, just like jams it in somebody's
- 22:56face and that's it. Yeah, it's just as they're
- 22:59coming up. The throne room just probably
- 23:02porch in the face. History has got a bit of a bite,
- 23:05you know? Well yeah.
- 23:07I mean the whole The whole scene, this scene is absolutely
- 23:11magical, the pair of them like looking at a important moment in
- 23:15his. It's the bit where Vicky
- 23:17actually, like says, like this is people will be talking about
- 23:19this for thousands of years. Nobody's got to know.
- 23:23It was your fault. What child?
- 23:27You can't blame me for all this, but I love how it's so rich of
- 23:30him coming after the ancient. Honestly, after that long
- 23:33taught, you give me what meddling like And then he waits
- 23:39till she's gone and then he has a laugh.
- 23:41Something But like again, tonally, there's probably a lot
- 23:45of people died in that. Fire laughter, dr.
- 23:48Laughing his head off her balcony.
- 23:49It's and actually this whole thing way says like or will he
- 23:53would have decided eventually to burn wrong like somebody else
- 23:57would have suggested to him or something like that.
- 23:59That contradicts so much. I think it's the end of the
- 24:01reign of terror. When the talk about, what if
- 24:04Napoleon? Hadn't.
- 24:07What if we try to stop Napoleon or whatever?
- 24:10And then he says, oh well, they would have only found out
- 24:12another way or it's a, it's a, it's a nice gal Claus, isn't it?
- 24:18Isn't so much. This story's been comedic if
- 24:21you'd had them, they're crying their eyes out and all those
- 24:23people dying. It would
- 24:35With this destruction, it's like the doctor and the, the Roman
- 24:39family at the, a family looking from the hills.
- 24:44Joe, I do love that for very different reasons.
- 24:46I think that's as effective, but just going in a very different
- 24:51direction tonally. We've got Peter.
- 24:54Carr go in, it's volcanic, you think you can make?
- 24:59So I love it Ian's piecing together or literally the pieces
- 25:02of the, the bars in saw. So this is what the must have
- 25:05hit me on the head with and she's like, oh yeah, we Chase
- 25:09around now like you can I tell you what I'm gonna do with it
- 25:12but it's very near Elizabeth. Yeah, even the way the set is
- 25:19it's very like Nero chasing Barbara.
- 25:23Oh, look at her. Let's just hit them with a
- 25:25cushion. Is made the fridge joke.
- 25:29You have sex? Is this is she does not come on,
- 25:32let's not think about 10 seconds ahead of me.
- 25:35But, oh yeah. I like the fridge joke, like
- 25:42sort of Tops and Tails, the The episodes just realized that she
- 25:48hit me on the head with the bars.
- 25:50It was so well. Your head going the wrong in the
- 25:52way. Yeah that's that's like a really
- 25:54good sort of David Renwick Square.
- 25:56Okay he wrote one foot in the grave.
- 25:59Did he write Black Adam as well? But he would do that.
- 26:02He would he would sit on a joke and then pay off much later on
- 26:07and I think Darren has got the same ability for each joke and
- 26:12it actually it's probably quite rewarding when And it'll have
- 26:15been for a foil for week since year will have seen the first
- 26:20episode or three weeks. So, quite a long time to get a
- 26:24payoff on a jewel. Okay.
- 26:26Hot know? Well, well well don't look at
- 26:30them child, you know, the energy might be over coming for you.
- 26:37There's so much fun. I've I feel like this is like
- 26:42the ultimate Doctor Who family. Mmm.
- 26:45Yeah. The thumb the fact that you are
- 26:49sending from treading on thin ice for so important.
- 26:52Its audience, you know I love the job.
- 26:57I'm a fan has a farm. Oh no, he shoves a great man's
- 27:03mouth. Like The Comedy of them trying
- 27:07to tell the doctor and Vicky, wait a sec.
- 27:10We've been there too and they just can't get a word in
- 27:13edgeways. And I love the idea that all
- 27:16untelevised bit, where the going back to the Tardis, which
- 27:19presumably is quite attract aware and the Cartwright and
- 27:23tell them. Hey, but wait, so we went there?
- 27:26Yeah, the whole time quiet. Quiet.
- 27:32Do you know who I really think? This is one of the stories where
- 27:37I think they drop character quite a lot in there seems
- 27:40together and it's just the actors having a blast.
- 27:42Yeah, they're so in the script but you're seeing the real sort
- 27:47of relationships between our love our on them.
- 27:50I think we both watching this on a brick box and the thumbnails
- 27:54for episodes like to free and for all in and bought the
- 27:59variations of the same photo Obviously got a fort are live,
- 28:03Topher in for Just Right Jackie and we rustler going to be like,
- 28:09lounging gonna be a fun photo shoot.
- 28:14Wait, where are we going next? Is it the red planet?
- 28:17It is the poem down by some Force.
- 28:20Drag down to what? What?
- 28:23What? I'll stay in those clothes.
- 28:28You look fabulous. Don't, I always really liked it
- 28:31as well. This is gonna be a big key key
- 28:32to say. But you know, when the Tardis is
- 28:34are like a bit Askew, like it was at the bottom of that
- 28:36mountain. Hmm.
- 28:38Or when it's on its side, thanks the ice Warriors and Ya.
- 28:41Ya Allah in Makkah Bipolar, when it's on the on the carriage.
- 28:45Yeah, I got around he does it as well.
- 28:50I love the fact that this like reminds you that Vicki is still
- 28:54like the new be just like what you're on about he can't fly.
- 28:58The Tardis was just like and you know anywhere planet we still
- 29:02are learning about her because remember she goes what's it?
- 29:04How often did you go to school almost?
- 29:06Yeah, hour a week. Yeah but that's true.
- 29:09And I love all this that I mean, The story ended, its like a
- 29:14couple of scenes ago, but I love that like, it's, it's pretty.
- 29:20It means that you gotta put a setup.
- 29:23It's basically like an alternative to a next time
- 29:25trailer, but it's such a good T's is a great teeth, but I
- 29:29wasn't like this story has both. Oh God.
- 29:33What's it called? In a book a Prelude?
- 29:35Is that what it's called? And yeah, well yeah in all of
- 29:40our, the The question is immediately answered by the next
- 29:45episode. It's dragged down to Art and
- 29:48then next episode of the web planning, another starkel.
- 29:54I've just gotta ask you like, before we, before we go out.
- 29:57Why there's something else you got to do at the end of this, I
- 29:58don't know. Yeah.
- 29:59But you know, you're fun and second, what do you think of the
- 30:03we're planning? I like Earth and though I can't
- 30:07watch all six. No, I want the guy that, you
- 30:09know, I'm not some sort of animal but like, I think that.
- 30:16August. I'm so I just find it so
- 30:20fascinating for the production and fur.
- 30:23I mean, I think on paper tonight story as well and I think that
- 30:26it probably looked enough even at the time but I think it's
- 30:30just like the ambition and the weirdness and the wait a second.
- 30:34This is on BBC and 13 million. People were watching it, Jean, a
- 30:40million, people's Mother's Enlighten, get with those
- 30:43Heights. Again, I think until like ITV
- 30:46was off. I think it's I think it's a
- 30:48parking space to God. Is it six million of smile?
- 30:52It was a long time though. Yeah, and I think that maybe I
- 30:56don't know, I suppose it was off the back of the toilet, me, and
- 30:59you and everything, but it's obviously doing something right.
- 31:03And I think that, yeah, it's the inventiveness.
- 31:07I sort of wish that the web Planet, I don't mind the
- 31:10production. I wish that it sort of been for
- 31:11episode rather than 6. Yeah, well I often feel that way
- 31:14about six powers I think the it's already like the end, the
- 31:21novelization of I think Doctor Who in the zombie.
- 31:25Oh yeah. That actually, there you go.
- 31:27There's the next one that should be Illustrated.
- 31:31All I mind, don't short the illustrator what is RB looks
- 31:35like. Yeah.
- 31:37Just say right there. Giant ants go for it.
- 31:40Yes, I think that would be a enjoyed most people and I think
- 31:44I've always thought as well, the web Planet if It was missing.
- 31:47I mean, it would obviously be tortured to listen to all the
- 31:51beeps and everything, but I would have loved, like the way
- 31:54the winter went through bondable storming, and Gary Russell was
- 31:57talking about the pad for some of our, and how they sort of
- 32:04went off script with the stage directions and Putnam sum of all
- 32:08being in another realm and astral projection, and all this.
- 32:13And the could go a bit like off. What was on off to you on TV?
- 32:17I think I can imagine an animated.
- 32:19We're plummeting incredible it would be exposed if you do if
- 32:23you go at it with a right let's not replicate.
- 32:26What was on the screen? Let's just go completely off the
- 32:28rails. I think I'd love to see her.
- 32:31Cattle. If they do do that, I'm saying
- 32:33that the idea for that web Planet Illustrated novel came
- 32:36here. Alright, so I'm going to do is
- 32:39solve these for you, okay? But before we go, the format is,
- 32:46is that once we have finished watching the story, we give
- 32:51three recommendations as to why somebody should grab the Romans
- 32:55from their shelf, straight away and put it on.
- 32:58If we do three each you start, I'll go.
- 33:01So next we'll go back and forth. Okay, off you go also I'm Scott
- 33:05already. I'm yeah, I think I don't be
- 33:11boring but I can just literally list really at the cast if
- 33:15that's what you want to do it. I think it really hot, but I
- 33:22think that it's probably not his greatest showcase because it
- 33:27really showcases The volume number to Maureen O'Brien.
- 33:31I don't free Jaclyn Hill and I think that each get a chance to
- 33:36really show sides of their character.
- 33:38I think Ian's Armenians have enough, screentime means done
- 33:42everything but I think yeah by this point I think that I mean
- 33:48Barbara hasn't even had that much time to beat in.
- 33:50This isn't a lot of time which hasn't been that comedic.
- 33:54No, but actually Jaclyn Hill is really funny too.
- 33:58And Vicki is still fairly new quantity like I think it's C
- 34:04still finding out about. You still seeing her and the
- 34:09doctor together in. Yeah, I can't think of any I
- 34:15think anything outside of that is sort of dressing to those
- 34:21free. I think I found.
- 34:22Yeah, I think about what part apart from possibly Derek
- 34:24Francis. Oh yeah, he's obviously pretty
- 34:27well. I'll tell you what.
- 34:27Yeah, welcome Portland's Maureen.
- 34:30O'Brien number 12 Jaclyn Hill over.
- 34:34Friederich Francis. I think that I think that the
- 34:39doctrine excuse me. I've got online free as well.
- 34:42You just named after cars, okay, well, Going to say the weight
- 34:47and character humor of Derek, Dennis Spooner.
- 34:52And just the brilliant jokes in this, the one, the one that you
- 34:56learned during this very common tree of.
- 34:58If I could just get my hands on whoever is responsible.
- 35:00Yes. And again, that's another one
- 35:02you wouldn't get that. It was missing.
- 35:03You wouldn't see that he was grabbing hold of her, it
- 35:06probably wasn't in the script but it's visual gags as well.
- 35:09Like with the The Sword in the sauna.
- 35:12It's and visual gags like Barbara disappearing, just as
- 35:16the doctor appears. But then there's also like
- 35:20genuine weight in the Story as well.
- 35:22I'm sure it'll be a roaring success, you know, it's really,
- 35:26really funny. So that's my number one, Dennis
- 35:28spoon. But to I'll say, Christopher
- 35:30Barry who I think has got almost impossible task at trying to
- 35:35realize an ancient Rome. No thruppence in a corner of
- 35:40lime Grove, but actually does a pretty good job.
- 35:42I think, in terms of sets, there's a lot of sets in this,
- 35:46there's the Villa, the beginning, the road, the market,
- 35:52The palace, the Gladiator ring, you know, and I see someone
- 35:57forgetting this. Well, I'm sure so in a, there's
- 36:00a lot, there's a lot of sort of in-between spaces which are done
- 36:05with like black drapes and yeah, a candelabra, like a large
- 36:10Candlestick or whatever and it works.
- 36:13And I think it's this the lighting and the I think I think
- 36:16the script works, the script snores it to limit as well and I
- 36:21think you can Oh that you can tell that like Dennis Spooner,
- 36:24it was obviously done a lot. I think he didn't let you do a
- 36:26lot of the Avengers. Yeah.
- 36:28Or would go on to write that down?
- 36:30Will do so I think like gnawing right, well, this is an
- 36:35establishing shot which can be taken from stock.
- 36:39This can be easily done in the corn at things like explaining
- 36:42away the arena as it's a training school or whatever,
- 36:45which I'm sure is like said in passing the whole.
- 36:48But isn't hope not margin of that.
- 36:50But there's Like Terry Nation, for example, I mean I love kids
- 36:54at Mariners but that is it's sort of it's on a bit of a
- 36:58hiding to nothing with the scale of it.
- 37:00And I think it's the berry set designer guy Barry Newberry.
- 37:07Yes. In the there's a special feature
- 37:09way to basically him just being really sad that It was just
- 37:13really like not proud of his work but he hated the fire of
- 37:17Rome at the end and me. Yeah, I think it's I mean it
- 37:22seems to have known the director, the writer and the
- 37:25director. I think seem to have been on the
- 37:28same lines with Rockridge and couldn't be done.
- 37:31Yeah, and I think that there's certain scripture that isn't
- 37:35always the case. Well guess, I had my third
- 37:38thing, then I'm missing the pace of it.
- 37:40So I think a lot of people criticize black and white Doctor
- 37:43Who for being really slow pace and this isn't at all, this has
- 37:46got about five plots happening concurrently for out and we hop
- 37:51back and forth to each one and we just with each one long
- 37:55enough. So it doesn't really get born
- 37:57again. Yeah, hop on to the next one.
- 37:59I got. And I think this one just flies
- 38:01by and it's one of those rare Doctor Who stories where the
- 38:05final episode isn't a massive, let down which yeah frequently
- 38:09wears this ends with, right? Fire of Rome, you know, like a
- 38:13nutshell. I think that's a great formula
- 38:15with those. I don't know what the for party
- 38:17story walls, which are building up to a big historical event.
- 38:20That is a good formula because it's not going to flag when you
- 38:23know what's coming, mmm, because it's all expectation.
- 38:28And yeah, you know, that just around the corner there's going
- 38:33to be the five rule more, the mass curve, the hyuga nozzle,
- 38:36whatever. You know that at least it's not
- 38:39gonna Tail off and I'll say this and I don't say this very often
- 38:45props to Eric's award in the ACs because he pulls off a pseudo
- 38:49historical, which feels like it's going nowhere.
- 38:52And then the surprise twist at the end is always putting Lane
- 38:55and the greater London. You know, you hear a lot of big
- 38:58salt, I watch the visitation fairly recent as well.
- 39:00He who lot of the Casco this harks back to the doctor who
- 39:03have my childhood. I think Pete Davidson says and
- 39:07it is very much like how you expect historical dr.
- 39:10Hood up. It's weird.
- 39:11The didn't do that for so long. Yeah, well yeah, then in the
- 39:1680s, they started pulling away from it, just like they did in
- 39:19the 60s. Mmm, just very straight.
- 39:21I loved it. When chibnall came along and
- 39:24said, you know what, we're going to do some of those Hartnell
- 39:26those serious historical again. So when you do Rosa and Punjab
- 39:30in series 11, I was really impressed.
- 39:33Yeah, I think I feel with the Jordan vertical ones.
- 39:35I absolutely love. Pretty much all the historic
- 39:37goals. I think that which funds as
- 39:40well. Of the world where maybe not
- 39:42the, which one is so much, but they're all sort of, I guess.
- 39:46Because most of this leveraged articles have been done and
- 39:48Russell T, Davies by chimel, it's the individual characters,
- 39:54and perhaps the least lesson on ones.
- 39:56Yeah. That I thought they did the
- 39:59partition of India, particularly well, with the family, the sort
- 40:03of the Divide of the families and bringing that answers.
- 40:07Well, and even something like War of the sontarans, which I
- 40:09know it was like, skew it. Because there was no war with
- 40:12the sontarans, but Mary Seacole was brilliantly done in that I
- 40:18thought. Wow, I feel as if we've covered
- 40:22the Romans. It's a lot of bang for your buck
- 40:28for. This Coventry was just boy, at
- 40:30least me to say, thank you very much for your time.
- 40:32It's been an absolute pleasure. Yes, I very much enjoyed it.
- 40:35Yeah. And I will try and twist your
- 40:37arms to enough one in the future.
- 40:39All right. And the God picked out randomly
- 40:42out of the house. I wasn't, you recuperate is a
- 40:45curated selection of which one. Which next we tell me.
- 40:51Honestly, I'll see what's already been taken.
- 40:53Well, I just, it's just the Drake left now.
- 40:57This is what the rare example, think of a great agenda.
- 41:01I'll send you a list, but there are some goodies, but no, thank
- 41:04you very much. It's been an absolute pleasure.
- 41:06My pleasure. Bosh.
- 41:09There we go. Yeah.
- 41:11I gotta pick a style. That was another free, our
- 41:13recording. Yeah.
- 41:18I've lost track on here. Can you, can you hear me, know,
- 41:20I can hear you now. I think it's not just taking
- 41:23that out, but, yeah, I think I've got a message from Matthew
- 41:28about 15 minutes ago, saying, other than cutting God, I only
- 41:35realized I could reply to it. I'll give him a call.
- 42:17Thing on the if building visits as part of trips away are
- 42:22always, welcome. Thanks.
- 42:25Kronos, you have an i statement enjoy your enjoy your tea.
- 42:29Oh, don't worry, see you later. Bye!
