Latest / Adventures in Adversity: an inspirational podcast / Ep. 44: 5 straight-up lies we tell ourselves when we experience adversity
Transcript
- 0:01Well, hello there. The kids have earned their
- 0:04screen time for the day. So I thought I would hop on the
- 0:08mic and do what is a little bit, not a little bit.
- 0:12It is a sequel to an earlier episode I did about maybe a year
- 0:18ago that was called 5 Stats about Adversity that may
- 0:21surprise you, something like that.
- 0:24So that was actually one of my top 10 episodes.
- 0:27This is sequel to that episode. All right, so lie number one,
- 0:32the first lie we tell ourselves about adversity.
- 0:37So this one, if I were stronger, this wouldn't hurt.
- 0:42I'm sure a lot of my my guests who I've interviewed have gone
- 0:47through disease, cancer, major accidents, disabilities,
- 0:54situations that are difficult to go through.
- 0:57And what could often come in our heads when we're in the middle
- 1:01of adversity is if I were stronger, I like, I should be
- 1:04OK, I should be dealing with this better.
- 1:08So many of my guests have proven the point that feeling pain is
- 1:14actually not weakness, more of a strength because you're actually
- 1:18confronting the pain versus numbing it or taking it out on
- 1:23other people. In episode 29 on narcissism with
- 1:26Professor Vaknin, we talk about narcissists and how they
- 1:31basically have no ability to self regulate, so they use other
- 1:36people. So if you're able to self
- 1:38regulate, feel pain, and calm yourself down, you are actually
- 1:43emotionally mature, strong human, right?
- 1:47So that lie, if I were stronger, that this wouldn't hurt.
- 1:52It's a lie. The people that take things out
- 1:56on other people, narcissists, people with anger management
- 1:59issues, that's actually quite weak because they mask how they
- 2:04feel because they actually can't face those feelings.
- 2:07So if it's hurting, that means you're actually feeling it and
- 2:10you're not taking it out on somebody, which is good for you.
- 2:15Lie, number one, lie #2 that we tell ourselves during adversity.
- 2:20Time heals everything. Actually, it doesn't.
- 2:25It doesn't heal everything. I don't know who said this, but
- 2:28healing heals everything. So you could be 40 years past
- 2:33something and if you haven't dealt with it doesn't matter.
- 2:37I think what I've learned through therapy, through my
- 2:40guests had therapists on the podcast.
- 2:44Healing. You Actually have to feel to get
- 2:49through it. There's the three different
- 2:52ways. There's like buffering,
- 2:54processing. I don't even know what the other
- 2:56one is, but if you're buffering, you're kind of just like staying
- 3:00busy and not actually feeling it.
- 3:01To actual actually process you, you can't be distracted.
- 3:05You have to actually feel the anger or the grief or the
- 3:09frustration. So it's actually what you do
- 3:12with the time that matters when you're healing, not just how
- 3:15much time has passed. So keep that in mind.
- 3:19Time does not heal everything. Inner work on yourself heals it.
- 3:24And the more you do it, the faster you heal.
- 3:26I think all right, lie #3 here that you tell yourself during
- 3:33adversity, everyone else is coping better than me.
- 3:39I'm going to call bullshit on that.
- 3:44Most of what people post is sort of that highlight reel of what
- 3:47they're going through in life. It's the best parts.
- 3:50The point of my podcast is to not just highlight the best
- 3:54parts of life, but actually highlight the real parts of
- 3:57life. But not just end there, but get
- 4:02advice from people who have gone through it on how to like
- 4:04transmute adversity into something good.
- 4:09But the lie that everyone else is coping better than I am.
- 4:13We all think that everyone struggles.
- 4:15Most just don't post about it. I'm purposely posting about
- 4:20struggles and good things. You don't need to be like super
- 4:23negative all the time. But be real.
- 4:26I think we've all had points in our life where we have looked OK
- 4:32and we're not. So if you think everyone else is
- 4:34coping better than you are, two years ago when I was going
- 4:39through a total breakdown, a lot of people didn't even know.
- 4:42I'm very good at hiding it when I needed to like, function
- 4:46because I didn't really want to like, break down in public.
- 4:49But you have no idea what people are going through.
- 4:52So nobody's coping better than you.
- 4:54They're just coping with different things than you.
- 5:00Lie #4 I should be over this by now.
- 5:03When you're going through adversity total a lie.
- 5:06There is no timeline for healing.
- 5:08Based on the therapy I've done, based on what I've read and
- 5:11based on what my 25 guests have said, it doesn't have like a
- 5:14clock in, clock out timeline of this is when you heal from this
- 5:19type of abuse or this, this grief, trauma growth.
- 5:24They don't really follow a schedule.
- 5:26And I think everybody's different, depends on where
- 5:29you're at. And I think for me, the more
- 5:32faith I have and I'm growing in that, the easier and faster my
- 5:40healing becomes. I don't think that you get to
- 5:45like a finish line of being over something, but you know how to
- 5:50cope with thoughts related to it.
- 5:52Perhaps line #5 this adversity will define me forever.
- 6:00It definitely defines portions of our life, but I think it's
- 6:04important to remember that adversity doesn't have to seal
- 6:07our identity, especially if you have faith you can have that
- 6:12rebirth and be someone different once you acknowledge your
- 6:16mistakes. There has to be accountability,
- 6:18though. You often hear the metaphor of
- 6:21like the book in the chapter. You could have a couple of
- 6:25really bad chapters, but like the whole book could totally end
- 6:29up a different way. It's definitely A twist in the
- 6:34plot when you don't expect adversity that's going to come
- 6:38your way. Maybe some adversity we do
- 6:40expect and we're like, OK, yeah, that happens.
- 6:43But when it's the kind that you don't want, I think I've felt
- 6:47that where you think this is going to define me forever.
- 6:50Definitely thought that 2 two years ago when I was going
- 6:52through narcissistic abuse bullshit.
- 6:55But if it has defined me forever, it's defined how strong
- 6:58I am and it's this podcast was born out of it.
- 7:01So go ahead and define me because in a good way.
- 7:05Certain experiences but we're never like 1 experience on my 43
- 7:10years. I'm a collection of experiences
- 7:12but some chapters are more impactful than others.
- 7:14So yes, it will define you, part of you, but not forever.
- 7:22So just to kind of recap, I've got the five lies here, the five
- 7:25lies we tell ourselves when we're going through adversity.
- 7:27Lie number one, if I were stronger, this wouldn't hurt.
- 7:31Lie number two, time heals everything.
- 7:34Line #3 everyone else is coping better than I am.
- 7:38Line number four, I should be over this by now.
- 7:42And lie #5 this will define me forever.
- 7:45So I guess for the week, I had a good church, you know, at church
- 7:51they always say like, think about this for the week, right?
- 7:53So maybe podcasts can kind of set a challenge regardless of
- 7:57what your religion is. One of those challenges.
- 8:01Can we pick one that we're going to try to challenge this week?
- 8:06How about I should be over this by now?
- 8:08Whatever you're going through when that lie comes up, just
- 8:12remember like healing is not related to a deadline.
- 8:17Maybe you'll get spontaneous healing that does happen, but
- 8:21probably not. So just work towards having a
- 8:27better relationship with the situation over time.
- 8:31I feel like that's healing. All right.
- 8:34Well, if you like this episode, go ahead and follow review, blah
- 8:39blah blah blah. Hopefully you will be aware of
- 8:41those five lies if they present themselves to you this week.
- 8:44When you're going through adversity, they all mask truths
- 8:49about adversity. It will not last forever.
- 8:51It won't define you, and no one else is coping better than you.
- 8:56Time doesn't heal everything. Active work heals everything.
- 9:00And if you were stronger, this wouldn't hurt.
- 9:02Life just hurts sometimes. So hopefully this was helpful.
- 9:06And I think this will be episode 44.
- 9:08And then I got another episode 45 with Meryl coming out about
- 9:12narcissism in the workplace. Thank you so much, Talk to you
- 9:16soon.
