- 0:06(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Hi, I'm Chris.
- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14In our current series, Imagining Work, we're asking
- 0:16the question, what story about work am I
- 0:19living in?
- 0:20Because the story we live in is the
- 0:21story we live out.
- 0:23And we want to live out the story
- 0:24that God is telling about work on the
- 0:26pages of the Bible.
- 0:27So we're looking at key images from scripture
- 0:29that can help us live in that story.
- 0:31And today's image is priest.
- 0:33What does it mean for us to be
- 0:35priests in our daily work?
- 0:37And what does it mean for Jesus to
- 0:39be our priest?
- 0:45In our last episode, we looked at the
- 0:46image of artist.
- 0:48And this image of priest is parallel to
- 0:51that image.
- 0:52Because artists see something about God, about the
- 0:55reality of God reflected in the world in
- 0:57some way.
- 0:59Then they do their work of art.
- 1:01And that ministers that reality of God to
- 1:03those of us who engage with their artwork.
- 1:05Even if it's not sacred art, that reflects
- 1:08even in secular art.
- 1:09And we talked about that last time.
- 1:12On a similar way, priests are also a
- 1:14go between.
- 1:15Priests go between God and the people.
- 1:19The way that priests go between God and
- 1:21the people is by offering sacrifices to God.
- 1:25And this is something that might seem kind
- 1:28of strange for us.
- 1:29Like, what does it mean to offer a
- 1:30sacrifice to God?
- 1:32And this was literally animal sacrifices in the
- 1:36Torah ministry of the priesthood.
- 1:39So there was a whole set of ritual
- 1:41laws that allowed people to bring animals.
- 1:44Those animals would be slaughtered by the priests
- 1:46and then offered to God as a form
- 1:49of worship.
- 1:51Now this might make us ask a question
- 1:52like, why is it being done this way?
- 1:55Like, you know, poor day for the animals,
- 1:57like it's kind of messy, it's gory, and
- 2:01it makes us wonder, why would God set
- 2:02it up like this?
- 2:04It might even make us think like, is
- 2:06this like somehow God must be appeased in
- 2:08his wrath by the offering of these sacrifices?
- 2:12But that's not what's going on here.
- 2:13That's more of a pagan concept of animal
- 2:15sacrifice.
- 2:16This is actually an expression of God's covenantal
- 2:19love for his people.
- 2:21That God has established a covenant with his
- 2:23people, a permanent commitment to them as their
- 2:26God and they as his people.
- 2:28And yet the people continue to break that
- 2:30covenant again and again because of the darkness
- 2:33of their hearts.
- 2:34Just like us, the darkness of the heart,
- 2:36the reality of sin breaks relationship with God
- 2:39and with other people.
- 2:41And so God needs to deal with that
- 2:43sin in some way.
- 2:45And the way that he deals with sin
- 2:46at first is to say, let's have a
- 2:49covering over sin, something that can make it
- 2:52so that we can continue in our covenant
- 2:54relationship even though the sin is there.
- 2:58So it's like an artistic image of you
- 2:59can imagine the stain of sin like on
- 3:02a canvas and then the blood is like
- 3:04being painted over that sin until you can't
- 3:07see it anymore.
- 3:09So this system is an expression of God's
- 3:11mercy.
- 3:11It's an expression of his love for his
- 3:13people.
- 3:13It's a way for relationship to continue despite
- 3:16the evil and the darkness of sin.
- 3:20Okay, so we got to use our cultural
- 3:22imagination here and get our minds around how
- 3:24things were different in a different time and
- 3:26place.
- 3:26Very different than our culture and God was
- 3:29in that and God was using that to
- 3:30bring people to himself.
- 3:33But for us, this image is actually still
- 3:35helpful that there's something that we present to
- 3:38God, we give it to him, we lift
- 3:40it up as an offering to him.
- 3:43But it's a little bit different for us.
- 3:46And we'll come back to why it's different
- 3:48for us.
- 3:48But first I want to look at how
- 3:50it's different for us.
- 3:50What is it that we are offering to
- 3:53God?
- 3:53And the book of Romans can help us
- 3:56with this.
- 3:57As you may know, Romans is kind of
- 3:59the theological magnum opus of the Apostle Paul.
- 4:02And over 11 chapters, he builds this beautiful
- 4:06theology of salvation.
- 4:09How God has saved us in Christ, what
- 4:11he's accomplishing in Christ in the world.
- 4:13And then in chapter 12, he pivots and
- 4:16begins to apply it.
- 4:17So it's like in chapters 1 through 11,
- 4:19here's the story you can live in if
- 4:21you're in Christ.
- 4:22And then in chapter 12, how do you
- 4:23live out that story in the world?
- 4:26And these are the first words he says
- 4:27in chapter 12, verse 1, when he's beginning
- 4:29to move to that application.
- 4:32Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in
- 4:35view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies
- 4:38as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God.
- 4:42This is your spiritual act of worship.
- 4:46What Paul's saying here is really radical.
- 4:49Just like in the Torah system of sacrifices,
- 4:53he's saying people can make an offering to
- 4:56God.
- 4:57And just like in that system, he's saying
- 4:59that's a spiritual act of worship.
- 5:01But now what he's saying is it's not
- 5:03the body of an animal that's being offered.
- 5:06It's your body.
- 5:08But it's not because you're going to die
- 5:09immediately.
- 5:10It's a living sacrifice.
- 5:13Paul is saying the way you live out
- 5:15your life as a disciple of Jesus in
- 5:17Christ, that life is the offering.
- 5:21And you can imagine that same image, lifting
- 5:23up your hands to the Lord, lifting it
- 5:25up to the Lord as a sacrifice, as
- 5:27a gift.
- 5:28That applies to everything you do in your
- 5:31embodied life.
- 5:33This is radical.
- 5:35This is inclusive.
- 5:36This is pervasive.
- 5:38And it's a gift to us because it
- 5:39means we don't have to go like people
- 5:41did back then at a specific time of
- 5:44year with a specific animal to a specific
- 5:46place in order to make that offering to
- 5:48the Lord.
- 5:49We can make the offering to the Lord
- 5:50in every moment of our lives, every moment
- 5:53that we're using our body to do anything
- 5:55or to experience anything.
- 5:57That can be an offering to the Lord.
- 6:00But there's more here, right?
- 6:02Remember, priests were go betweens between God and
- 6:05people.
- 6:06And so if we're the ones making the
- 6:07offering, as Paul says, that puts us in
- 6:10the role of priest because it was priests
- 6:11who lifted up the offering.
- 6:12And so there's this vertical dimension of lifting
- 6:15it up to the Lord.
- 6:17But there's also a horizontal dimension of what
- 6:20comes back to the people.
- 6:22And there's another passage here from the Book
- 6:24of Hebrews that can really help us with
- 6:25this.
- 6:27So we're going to read final chapter of
- 6:29the Book of Hebrews, Chapter 13, verses 15
- 6:32through 16.
- 6:33Listen for the connection between the vertical and
- 6:36the horizontal.
- 6:38Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to
- 6:41God a sacrifice of praise, the fruit of
- 6:44lips that confess his name.
- 6:47And do not forget to do good and
- 6:48to share with others, for with such sacrifices,
- 6:51God is pleased.
- 6:53You see what the writer to the Hebrews
- 6:55is doing here?
- 6:56They're talking about that vertical dimension just like
- 6:58Paul that we can offer a sacrifice of
- 7:00praise to the Lord.
- 7:02But then they're also saying there's another kind
- 7:04of sacrifice.
- 7:05It's the sacrifice of doing good and sharing
- 7:07with others.
- 7:09In other words, there's a dimension of mission
- 7:11here as well.
- 7:13For us to be priests is to be
- 7:15on mission.
- 7:16It's the way that we love others and
- 7:18we serve others in the name of Christ,
- 7:20in the character of Christ, that also is
- 7:23a sacrifice and an offering to God.
- 7:25With such sacrifices, God is pleased.
- 7:29There's a theologian who was involved with the
- 7:31Lausanne movement, a movement about mission, helping people
- 7:34understand mission, helping people live out mission in
- 7:36the world.
- 7:37They have wonderful resources at lausanne.org.
- 7:40He was a Welsh theologian named Demi Hughes,
- 7:42passed away a few years ago, but he
- 7:44wrote about this in a paper for the
- 7:45Lausanne movement.
- 7:47He was writing about these verses specifically.
- 7:49He says, the church is faithful to its
- 7:51priestly call to the extent to which she
- 7:54combines the sacrifice of praise with the sacrifice
- 7:58of good deeds that alleviate human suffering.
- 8:02The church is faithful to its priestly call
- 8:04to the extent to which she combines those
- 8:07two sacrifices.
- 8:09So we've got to think of it as
- 8:09those intersecting lines.
- 8:11We're connecting with God, we're offering our whole
- 8:13lives to God, and we're serving and loving
- 8:16other people in the name of Christ.
- 8:17We're doing good deeds that, as Demi Hughes
- 8:19says, alleviate human suffering.
- 8:22And so this too is inclusive, it's pervasive,
- 8:25it's not limited to one set of tasks.
- 8:27And sometimes we can get mixed up about
- 8:29that.
- 8:29We can think that, oh, it's only mission
- 8:31if I'm having a spiritual conversation with someone
- 8:33in which I share the good news.
- 8:36Now that is a great thing to do.
- 8:37And I will do future episodes talking about
- 8:39just that and how we do that.
- 8:41If that's something that is nerve wracking for
- 8:44you or scary for you, you can do
- 8:45it.
- 8:46There's ways that you can share your faith
- 8:47with others that are natural and that work.
- 8:51But it's not limited to that.
- 8:53Mission includes everything we do.
- 8:55This verse in Hebrews is not about sharing
- 8:56your faith.
- 8:57When it says to share with others, it
- 8:59means like sharing resources, sharing your food, sharing
- 9:02things that people need, giving in a way
- 9:04that helps others thrive.
- 9:07And so everything we do that blesses other
- 9:10people, if we're doing it in the name
- 9:11of Christ and in the character of Christ,
- 9:13that's mission.
- 9:14That's that horizontal dimension of offering a sacrifice
- 9:17to God.
- 9:18That's priestly work.
- 9:21And this helps us connect it back to
- 9:23our everyday work, the work that we do
- 9:25at our jobs or in our homes, whether
- 9:27it's paid or unpaid, the work that we
- 9:29do each day can also be priestly work.
- 9:32Now, maybe you feel a little bit skeptical
- 9:34about that.
- 9:35Like if you're in a church tradition like
- 9:37my own where certain people have the title
- 9:39of priest and an office of priest that's
- 9:42set apart and it's very special, this is
- 9:44true like in my Anglican context, it's also
- 9:46true for Lutherans, for Orthodox, for Catholics.
- 9:49And you might say like, well, maybe they,
- 9:51maybe their work is priestly work because it's
- 9:53priestly work in a special way, but I
- 9:54don't think my work is priestly work in
- 9:56the exact same way.
- 9:58Or maybe you look at people who, where
- 9:59that horizontal dimension is really clear, like someone
- 10:02who works for a Christian nonprofit.
- 10:04I think of my friend Rachel, who's an
- 10:06employment specialist with World Relief, a wonderful agency
- 10:09that serves refugees and immigrants.
- 10:12It's like, yeah, when she goes to work
- 10:13every day, she's like helping refugees and immigrants
- 10:15find jobs.
- 10:16That seems like that might be mission.
- 10:19But what about my job?
- 10:20Like what if you're just doing the dishes
- 10:21at home or taking care of your kids?
- 10:23Or what if you're an accountant at a
- 10:25company that doesn't have a super altruistic mission
- 10:28in the world?
- 10:29How can your work be priestly?
- 10:31Well, it's fair to say that different jobs
- 10:33are different, right?
- 10:35Like you're not doing priestly work in the
- 10:37exact same way that a priest at your
- 10:38church is doing priestly work or that a
- 10:40pastor is.
- 10:41You're not necessarily doing mission in the exact
- 10:43same way that somebody working at a Christian
- 10:44nonprofit is doing mission.
- 10:46But you're still doing mission.
- 10:49Any time that you love another human being
- 10:52in the character of Christ, reflecting the way
- 10:54that his name is on you, that's that
- 10:57horizontal dimension.
- 10:58And God receives that as a sacrifice.
- 11:01It's a sacrifice with which he is pleased.
- 11:04And so even if we don't wanna exaggerate
- 11:06the way that the little details of our
- 11:08lives advance or build up God's mission in
- 11:12some way, we can still be honest about
- 11:15how pervasive it is.
- 11:16If our bodies are the living sacrifice, everything
- 11:20we do with our bodies, if we're doing
- 11:21it in the character of Christ, to love
- 11:23God and to love other people is priestly
- 11:26work.
- 11:27So I hope that gives a sense of
- 11:28dignity and of purpose and of God's presence
- 11:31in the work you're doing every day, regardless
- 11:33of what it is.
- 11:34You can be that go between God and
- 11:37others as you make that offering, that sacrifice
- 11:40of praise and that sacrifice of good works
- 11:42in the work you're doing every day.
- 11:45But that makes us ask the question, why
- 11:47is all of this possible?
- 11:48How did this change happen where instead of
- 11:51having to rely on these animals, sacrifices for
- 11:54the covering of sin, that now everything is
- 11:56different?
- 11:57Well, it's because of that story of Jesus's
- 12:00work.
- 12:01He's the one who came and accomplished something
- 12:03through his death and resurrection that changed everything.
- 12:07And so we'll stay in the letter to
- 12:09the Hebrews here and just read one more
- 12:10verse that talks about how Jesus is the
- 12:13priest who changes everything.
- 12:15This is from Hebrews chapter seven, verse 27.
- 12:18The writer says, unlike the other high priests,
- 12:22Jesus does not need to offer sacrifices day
- 12:25after day, first for his own sins and
- 12:27then for the sins of the people.
- 12:29He sacrificed for their sins once for all
- 12:31when he offered himself.
- 12:36Jesus offered the sacrifice of his own body
- 12:39on the cross.
- 12:41And that sacrifice, unlike the sacrifices from before,
- 12:44which could only cover sin like with a
- 12:46layer of paint, his sacrifice washes sin away.
- 12:50His sacrifice does away with it entirely.
- 12:53His sacrifice brings us into full reconciliation and
- 12:55fellowship with God.
- 12:57And that sacrifice never has to be repeated.
- 12:59We all get to inhabit and participate in
- 13:02that sacrifice when we place our faith in
- 13:04Christ, when we're baptized in the name of
- 13:06the Father and the Son and the Holy
- 13:08Spirit, we enter into fellowship with him, we're
- 13:11in him, and that sacrifice applies to us
- 13:13so that our sin is done away with
- 13:15forever.
- 13:16Praise the Lord, we're saved through his sacrifice,
- 13:19through his priestly ministry.
- 13:22He's the one that made the offering for
- 13:24sin once and for all.
- 13:27And that means that our priestly ministry is
- 13:30rooted in his priestly ministry.
- 13:32The sacrifices that we offer, that sacrifice of
- 13:35praise and sacrifice of good works, those are
- 13:37not sacrifices to take away sins.
- 13:39Those are not even sacrifices to cover over
- 13:41sins.
- 13:42Those are sacrifices rooted in the work he's
- 13:44already accomplished as priest to express our praise
- 13:49to God and our love for others.
- 13:51The same love that drove Jesus to the
- 13:53cross in obedience to his Father for the
- 13:55sake of the world now drives us to
- 13:57love other people freely, not to cover over
- 13:59sins, but to announce that Jesus has already
- 14:02done that work and to live out his
- 14:04love in every aspect of our lives.
- 14:09Lord Jesus, you are our great high priest.
- 14:12Make our hearts so grateful for your love
- 14:14for us, for the way you stood in
- 14:16the gap between us and God, the way
- 14:19your sacrifice has purchased redemption forever.
- 14:23And we do not have to do that
- 14:25for ourselves, that our sin is not just
- 14:27covered over, but washed away.
- 14:30And show us how we following you can
- 14:32exercise the priestly ministry you've given us to
- 14:35go between you and others to extend your
- 14:38love and your life in the work that
- 14:40we're doing every single day, that we would
- 14:42offer that sacrifice of praise and that sacrifice
- 14:44of good works as an offering to you.
- 14:51Thanks for listening.
