- 0:03Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed to kick start
- 0:07your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern
- 0:11for August 9th. Today is National Book Lovers
- 0:15Day, and if you're listening to this podcast, there's a good
- 0:18chance you're already someone who appreciates the power of
- 0:22words and stories. This wonderful holiday
- 0:25encourages us to put down our smartphones, step away from the
- 0:29endless scroll, and reconnect with the tactile focus pleasure
- 0:33of reading a good book. National Book Lover's Day
- 0:38celebrates not just the act of reading, but the entire culture
- 0:42of books, the libraries that house them, the bookstores that
- 0:46sell them, the authors who write them, and the readers who give
- 0:50them life through their own imagination.
- 0:54It's a day to honor the fact that despite living in the most
- 0:58connected digital age in human history, there's still something
- 1:03irreplaceable about holding the book in your hands and
- 1:06disappearing into its pages. Books have been humanity's way
- 1:12of preserving knowledge, sharing stories, and passing wisdom from
- 1:16one generation to the next for thousands of years.
- 1:21From ancient stone tablets to illuminated manuscripts to
- 1:27paperbacks in your local bookstore, books have always
- 1:31been our most reliable time machines.
- 1:35Which brings us to today's quote from Doctor Seuss, who once said
- 1:40the more that you read, the more things you will know.
- 1:44The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.
- 1:48Now, Doctor Seuss wrote these words for children, but let's be
- 1:52honest, adults need this reminder just as much, maybe
- 1:56more. In our world of quick headlines,
- 2:00social media summaries, and bite sized information, we sometimes
- 2:04forget that deep reading, the kind where you really sink into
- 2:09a book, is like mental travel. Every book you read takes you
- 2:13somewhere new. A biography introduces you to
- 2:17someone you've never met. A novel drops you into a world
- 2:21that exists only in imagination. A history book transports you to
- 2:26a different time. A science book opens up the
- 2:30mysteries of how things work. Each page turn is a step into
- 2:36territory you haven't explored before.
- 2:39And here's the beautiful thing about books.
- 2:42They're the most democratic form of travel available.
- 2:45You don't need a passport, a plane ticket, or even much
- 2:49money. You can visit Victorian London,
- 2:53explore distant galaxies, sit in on conversations with
- 2:58philosophers, or learn skills that change your life, all from
- 3:04your favorite reading chair. Doctor Seuss understood that
- 3:09reading isn't passive entertainment, it's active
- 3:12exploration. Every book expands your
- 3:15perspective, adds to your understanding, and quite
- 3:19literally makes you a more well travelled person, even if you
- 3:23never leave your hometown. I remember being a kid and
- 3:27discovering that the library was basically a free adventure
- 3:30warehouse. I can check out books about
- 3:34dinosaurs, mystery set in other countries, biographies of
- 3:37adventures. It was like having access to
- 3:40every movie, documentary and travel experience ever created
- 3:43all in one building. And that sense of wonder hasn't
- 3:47left me. Even now when I walk into a
- 3:50bookstore or library, I feel that same excitement.
- 3:54All these stories, all this knowledge just waiting to be
- 3:57discovered. It's like being a kid in a candy
- 3:59store, except the candy makes you smarter and more empathetic.
- 4:04And when the Internet came out, holy mind blown.
- 4:11And then when podcasts came along.
- 4:14Oh yeah, and now AIWTF Crazy stuff.
- 4:23Sometimes you just need to go back to the analog and read a
- 4:27real paper book. So today, in honor of National
- 4:32Book Livers Day, maybe pick up a book you've been meaning to read
- 4:36or revisit an old favorite. Visit a library or a bookstore.
- 4:40Remember what Doctor Seuss knew, that reading is one of life's
- 4:44great adventures, and the more you read, the more interesting
- 4:48places your mind can go. In a world that's constantly
- 4:52trying to grab your attention, books offer something precious,
- 4:56the chance to focus deeply, to think slowly and to travel far
- 5:02without moving an inch. That's going to do it for today.
- 5:05May your next book take you exactly where you need to go,
- 5:09even if you don't know where that is yet.
- 5:11I'm Anna McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 5:16tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 5:20with another daily quote.
