- Nathan Hawthorne: And we are live in Jarod McInroy: Chop chop. Nathan Hawthorne: Live, here we are, back again. Great to see you today. Love the hat. Classic three stripes. Jarod McInroy: We're back. Thank you. Father's Day gift. Nathan Hawthorne: Nice love that happy Father's Day to everybody and welcome to another episode of KYP, aka Know Your Personnel. This is episode number 18, and we are excited to dive right into it. We've got plenty to cover. Nothing is hotter and more pressing right now than the NBA draft literally occurring live as we are recording this number one pick overall to the Washington Wizards, AJ DeBan stuff. But before we get into that, a lot of trades went down. A lot of signings went down in order to make this happen. Jared, I understand that you have a rant. Jarod McInroy: Finally, finally it's over. The Giannis saga is complete and it was as terrible as the whole process of it was. It was they couldn't have went to a worse team, worse off for Milwaukee, worse off for Miami. It was the perfect ending to the never ending Giannis saga that we have been waiting for forever. He's been unhappy in Milwaukee for a while, we've known this. After the championship they kind of fell apart. They were really old to begin with. It was always gonna be fragile and they were gonna need a retool. ⁓ but th they haven't been able to do it. Obviously Dame got injured, so it was a tough situation for Milwaukee, but ⁓ finally, finally it's done. And and to sum it up, he goes to he goes to Miami for their entire roster. Every Nathan Hawthorne: Mm-hmm. Jarod McInroy: player that they have that would be a role player fitting around Giannis in a championship roster has now been traded to Milwaukee outside of Bayham Atabayo. Now they can't pay Norman Powell. He's probably gonna walk. You can hardly afford to bring in anyone else in house. your next best players are Davion Mitchell and and Andrew Wiggins. How are you gonna beat how are you gonna beat New York with that team? I am making a declaration right this second. The Miami the Miami Heat this year are at best The seventh best team in the East. With this trade. After the trade. Seventh best. After the trade. I can name all six teams before if you want. They're no they're not currently better than New York, Detroit, Cleveland, Boston. The seventy sixers. Nathan Hawthorne: Wow. Seventh best team? Okay. Yep. Jarod McInroy: I'm spacing who's my last team that I had ready to go. Nathan Hawthorne: Wizards. The magic? The magic? Jarod McInroy: I'm missing a big one here. No. No, neither of those. ⁓ I digress the Hawks. That is exactly it. They're not better than the Hawks. And let me tell you why. The Hawks have built out a great roster. They're gonna be competitive and good this year. I like them. We don't need to go into that right now. The moral of the story is terrible trade on both parts. And now the only winner of this is the Portland Trailblazers, because we own that terrible Milwaukee team's picks for twenty eight. Nathan Hawthorne: Hawks. Okay. Jarod McInroy: twenty nine and thirty. Thank you very much for giving us lottery picks. That's all I got. Nathan Hawthorne: I just also yeah, but picks in like the in the in the twenty thirties. Again, this this to me was just such a sad day for small markets in the NBA, continuing to push stars to the bigger markets, the international markets. We saw Luca leave Dallas ugly. You could argue that Dallas is a bigger market, but it's not anywhere near the size of LA. We've seen Dame leave Portland to try and team up with Giannis and we saw how that worked out. But to attract a free agent like Giannis to a city that is small. It's just not gonna happen. And Boston, I just genuinely think he doesn't like Boston as a city. And I wouldn't either if you're telling me and like we were talking about, Tyler Harrow has to wake up tomorrow and he's gotta live in Milwaukee. He's gotta be in Milwaukee during you know, during the summer, during the winter. Like nobody wants to have that. Nobody wants to do that. Especially after what, like four or five years down in Miami. So yeah, I just think it's a tough day for for small markets. ⁓ just again, no no big free agent signings want to go there. I I take it personally as a Portland Tra Portland Trailblazers fan. It just kinda sucks. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. And it's also just the whole s this whole part of this part of the saga wa has been just as weird as the rest of it. There's always all these rumors each time. It's been the last three trade deadlines, the last three off seasons. W we've been waiting for this move to finally be made and each time it's it's this person, this is stopping it from getting it done. Whatever it is that's Milwaukee hasn't been a fan of, ⁓ has been they've been dragging their feet over it. Now you're telling me Boston's hold th they were holding back because they wouldn't trade Hugo, whatever his name is, some nobody from Spain. Like ⁓ if this Boston Celtics wanted Giannis, they and there was nothing holding them back because now you have an irreparable relationship with Jalen Brown and you almost have to deal him now, ⁓ because of all of this. They went with the Miami package. They wholeheartedly saw everything and they thought that that was the best move and that shows how bad of a franchise Milwaukee is and how bad of a front office they currently have. What future are you getting with with that with that lineup? 'Cause they said they still want to be competitive. How are you going to be competitive with Tyler Hero as your best player? You tell me. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah, you have an you have an injured superstar that you started paying a lot of money to. You basically sold all the cheddar you have to try and bring in Dame to get that second championship. You start burning through coaches, and then before you know it, you're right where you were before you got gifted Giannis in the NBA draft. ⁓ so it's just yeah, again, it's a tough scene. It is really tough for Milwaukee. I still think I still think this Miami Heat team with BAM, like you have a strong front court, and I love having a strong front front court. But how is it gonna work with those two on the floor? With Mr. eighty three and Giannis Antuntacumpo. I don't understand what like how that offense is gonna work. 'Cause I know that both of them like to slash. Bam likes to kinda work that mid range mid post. Like I just I kinda have a tough time seeing how that offense is gonna come together. Jarod McInroy: It's Pat Riley being an egotistical maniac. He want he wanted the big shiny piece, the biggest name on the market, and he he did everything he possibly could to get it and now he has no roster. It's the say the beef is live between Portland and Miami still from the damn saga when we wouldn't trade him over there for their terrible packages that they're they were offering us the similar s package. They were like, Hey, we can give you Tyler Hero and Jamie Yakes and a couple picks. Yeah, and we're like, we don't want that. Nathan Hawthorne: We give you our entire cheap roster. Jarod McInroy: And and look what we ended up turning that into after so regardless. Good luck to both teams. Whatever. We're all gonna move on and ne we're not gonna hear from you two for a while. Nathan Hawthorne: And you and you know who I want to say good luck to as well is the Washington Wizards. Congratulations, Trey Young. You signed, you took a bunch of money, not as much money as it could have, but you took a lot of money, and now you're with a roster that is not even sure if it's gonna be entirely healthy. You look on paper, you like that you have Anthony Davis. You look on paper and you like that Alex Tsar is kind of developing, but I feel like we've kind of seen Alex Tsar's ceiling for the most part. Now you've drafted AJ DeBansta. I I g if Anthony Davis was fully healthy, I'd be really excited for this team. But because he's not, I just think now you have a guard who wants to score and play zero defense. You brought in AJ Debansta, a guard who likes to score and does not play defense. Anthony Davis probably isn't gonna get healthy. And if Alex Sarr is the guy that you're relying on to be the strongest part of your front court, you have a really soft front court. And that is not gonna fly with Carl Anthony Towns as As soft as I like to say he is, he showed up for New York. It's not gonna fly when you make your way, make your way up north into Boston. Like, I just don't I congratulations, you got your money. But you're just gonna go die and be uncompetitive with the Washington Wizards. It kind of reminds me of the ⁓ like the Bradley Buell signing. Looked great on paper with John Wall. ⁓ my gosh, it's about to be so Where are they now? Where are they now? Jarod McInroy: I actually don't even know. I couldn't tell you. ⁓ but Nathan Hawthorne: It well, Bradley Bill is not in the league. Neither of them are in the league anymore. Neither of them are in the league. Jarod McInroy: Yeah, last I saw he was just injured and never playing for Phoenix. So ⁓ but what I will say on that is one I need to acknowledge I'm less passionate about this, so I'm still cooling down from the Giannis stuff. ⁓ but yeah, the Trey Young thing, I'm like he needed a ch he needed a change of scenery. There was nothing else going on in Washington. So like Washington's like, hey, like this is better than nothing. It's gonna sell tickets. Nathan Hawthorne: Sure. Sure. Jarod McInroy: ⁓ you know, let's let's see where we can you do. You gotta throw you gotta have a point guard. ⁓ th th this is this is a project, and I think this project might be beyond Trey Young's years. ⁓ meaning that they're gonna have to build this team up for the next like few more years and best case scenario, yeah, you're like great, we have Nathan Hawthorne: You you gotta put a point guard out on the floor. I think that's exactly you gotta have a point guard out on the floor. Yeah, but they've been Jarod McInroy: Trey Young, who's now whatever years old, his contract's up, and we have A. J. Debanza probably coming into his own finally. Alexar probably isn't a part of this team. It's kind of like the the seventy Sixers team where it was trust the process and you just keep drafting and drafting and drafting, but then you also keep trading and trading and trading, and it's like where where did this core go? ⁓ yeah. I don't know. I don't know what to make of him. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah, 'cause there 'cause there never is a core and then you have one person and then you just try and get that other big signing. Like again, I I get it. Those moves were aggressive to acquire Anthony Davis, but I it's anyways. Do you want to touch on Julius Randle at all to Brooklyn? I d I don't really have a lot to say other than what an just what an absolute flop by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first place. Jarod McInroy: I don't have much to say either. Nathan Hawthorne: Getting rid of Cat was a horrible idea from the start. And not only getting rid of Kat, but then swapping him for Julius Randle. That was never going to work with Anthony Edwards. From day one, when they put this team together, you knew it wasn't going to be a championship team. You had just been to the NBA finals. And you're like, ⁓ yeah, Julius Randle is the guy to get us over the hump. What are you talking about? There's a reason New York dished him. Anyways. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. I and now he's going to just have his career finish in in Brooklyn and next thing you know, he's gonna be wherever Bradley Beale and John Wall are at. It's it's it's quite a shame. ⁓ but yeah, I mean the the jury's always been out on Julius Randle, man. ⁓ we we saw him when he started to put things together in New Orleans and he kinda fooled everybody and then New York bought in on it and then he just again over and over it was the same story of why he was falling short. And he did it again in Minnesota and here we are. They traded back spots just to get him off the roster. So it's kinda sad. ⁓ but that's that. Those are pretty much the big trades that have happened so far. There's a lot of names that are being floated around right now. ⁓ Trey Murphy is on the the trade block potentially. ⁓ Jalen Brown. They Nathan Hawthorne: Respect it. Mm-hmm. Jarod McInroy: They did say that Anthony Davis probably isn't going to be staying in Washington. We'll see what what really happens there. But ⁓ there's still some names. There's still a lot to happen in the off season, but ⁓ the draft is kind of playing out right in front of us. ⁓ Darren Peterson to Utah. He's gonna go the Ace Bailey thing wasn't really a hit, so ⁓ they gotta gotta go get a guard, and he was kind of the guard. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah. Ace Bailey's Ace Bailey Ace Bailey was drafted last year or this year. Okay, yeah. It was between him him and Dylan Harper, and I thought it was a no brainer. You had to draft Dylan Harper. But ⁓ yeah, so AJ Debanza won, Darren Peterson two, Cameron Boozer ⁓ went to Memphis. I actually like that for their front court. I think that's positive. Caleb Wilson ⁓ to the Bulls. Bulls, I think, could be sneaky good now that they have so much space to do what they want with their roster. Jarod McInroy: ⁓ Yeah. Nathan Hawthorne: ⁓ and sneaky good means they could be in the play in, which now I guess anybody can be in the play in these days. ⁓ Keaton Wagler, ⁓ the guard from Illinois, he went to the Clippers ⁓ to round out the top five. Ooh, I like Darius Acuff, seven overall to the Sacramento Kings. Kinda doing what they can. I listen, you gotta put butts in seats in Sacramento. It's not a big market. There's too many other things going on further south in San Francisco. Listen. You're getting kind of like your swipe of De'Aaron Fox back. Hopefully he just has a little bit more presence of mind in these clutch situations. I like it. I like it. Jarod McInroy: I don't mind it. I mean you th it was certainly the only move they could make, but I don't know many teams that are in a worse situation than Sacramento. They're just they have some ungodly contracts on the books. They're nowhere near competitive. ⁓ they they gotta they gotta just move into the youth movement. and they gotta get rid of De Monte Sabonis while he still has some value. there's like the flip. Yeah. Nathan Hawthorne: 'Cause he disappeared quick this year. He disappeared quick. You were almost a Western Conference Finals team. People thought you were nasty and aggressive. Now all of a sudden we don't know what ya are. You gotta do something quick. Jarod McInroy: They're nothing. They're nothing. And there's a lot of teams that could use a guy like Sabonis, or at least ⁓ if he's a piece of what he was ⁓ moving forward, ⁓ he'll find a home pretty quick. So flip it. ⁓ move into the youth movement. I like Acuff over there and I think that's another one of those those dairy ⁓ sorry, Dylan Harper guards where bro, he can go get buckets. So yeah, not a bad pick. Nathan Hawthorne: Absolute hooper. Yeah, and poor per usual, we'll go ahead and wrap up the NBA here, but we are going to stay live notifications on for any shocking moves to happen in the NBA draft. Typic Yeah, no, talk. What's up? Jarod McInroy: Can I Can I round out one last thing on the NBA before we move on? This is for all sports too. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah, l hey, shape this up. Give it a clean fade. Jarod McInroy: So the Blazers just h hired Mike and Ori today and it was a one year contract. Yeah, one year contract with ⁓ well three years rather with a team option on year two and year three. So essentially one year guaranteed and guaranteed money. And Dundan is getting a lot of heat again for being so so called cheap, whatever. All I'm gonna say is there should be more teams doing this. Why are we giving coaches Nathan Hawthorne: ⁓ my goodness, I wanted to talk about this. Being a snake for one year. Jarod McInroy: And head coaches that have never coached before, four years guaranteed, and that's the standard. Like three, four years guaranteed for somebody who's never coached before. And this is across all sports. This is baseball, this is basketball, NFL. We're just giving the keys to the castle away and not making anybody earn anything. Now, I like the higher because I like ⁓ You he gotta work under Mike Malone, Dwayne Casey, like he has a great track record. He seems like the players that he's played or coached for, ⁓ all will go to bat for him. Why aren't more people doing this? Am I missing something? Like what w why are we just giving away the keys to the castle? Nathan Hawthorne: I I like this in the sense that, you know, don't let him get comfortable. And I feel like he would say something like, you know, they don't want me to be comfortable, you know, kinda like a a a dog on the porch after a pork chop, you know. They they just want me to be ready to come in and it something like that, right? He's got all you sent me that video of his crazy sayings. I Jarod McInroy: Yeah. He's hilarious. Nathan Hawthorne: I like the idea of one year, but I think there's a reason that they sign minimum three to four years. And it's got it has to do probably with some sort of collective agreement and it has to do something with the agents, right? Portland, I wouldn't say, is a super desirable job. We don't have a true superstar, although Denny has shown he's got some superstar potential. We don't have a true superstar. It's not a huge market to attract a free agent for you to bring somebody in. And then couple that with you're asking people typically to move across the country somewhere. with families and if you're saying we're only gonna give you one year, that's a lot of things in their life to move around. And again, you're committing to being a head coach, like you're taking the job, but it's more of that family dynamic and moving a bunch of things across the country. Now I mean yeah, right. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. You get to move out of Minnesota. Congratulations. You just upgraded to Portland, bro. No offense to Minnesota. Nathan Hawthorne: Did di did you? Minneapolis is tight. That's all that's all I'm saying. I love the city I live in too, but if you're talking about Minneapolis versus Portland in terms of a city, like it's the Twin Cities, dog. It's not a bad sp but yeah, again, my point. Anyways, now we'll wrap up the NBA. Micah, we are so happy to have you. We can't wait for you to turn this into a championship roster. But yeah, one year am I wait, hold on. I'm gonna go back to this again. I keep trying to wrap it up. Jarod McInroy: I love the city I live in. That's all I'm gonna say. Ugh, okay. Welcome to Portland. Nathan Hawthorne: In football, you need two to three years. It's much harder to turn around a fifty three man roster and get everybody on the same page. But in the NBA, you got fifteen guys and really only four of ⁓ are gonna be changing the game for ya. You just have to get them on the same page. So it's entirely different. So yeah, I don't mind that. Right. ⁓ Jarod McInroy: I disagree though, also because I feel like that's why you have the the o the team options because if you know after a year if a guy's heading in the right direction or not. And there's a lot of times where we see coaches get canned after a year, ⁓ whether they're scapegoated or not. Whatever the reason is, they get canned after a year, it doesn't work, and now you have to pay them guaranteed money. Like how much money have the the now Las Vegas Raiders had to pay coaches that have not been coaching for them. They wouldn't have to pay them any of that money. Now it's it's chum change to them, yeah, I guess, but reg regardless, that's crazy. Nathan Hawthorne: That's also true. But it's it's pennies to these guys. They don't care. It's chump chains. What? ⁓ no, you want another you want 10 million. Okay, here you go. My wife doesn't get a new purse. Wyndham Clark is your US Open winner. Thank you, Wendham. And thank you, Sam Burns, also for the anybody but Wyndham cash in. We talked about it last week, specifically with two these two guys. We said Wyndham Clark and Sam Burns need to have good weeks. They are the new faces. Jarod McInroy: Okay, let's move on. Enough. Nathan Hawthorne: of USA golf, team USA golf. And they had to show up in the big time and they did. A lot of people have some mixed feelings about Wyndham Clark being the winner, trying to nitpick his performance, da da da. What say you? Jarod McInroy: And this is coming from someone who is not a fan of Wyndham Clark. He put on a master class of one controlling what he can control, two, making the spart smart play at any given moment, and three, showing everyone how to get up and down. Like he he was getting up and down from everywhere. And some of it was good putting, some of it was his chip shot, his ⁓ Nathan Hawthorne: Dude, he kept doing it. Jarod McInroy: bunker save, whatever it was. He was getting up and down from everywhere. ⁓ and he just he managed all of his rounds. He focused for all three rounds and then in the final round, ⁓ yeah, he shot a three over, but that's all he needed to do. So ⁓ yeah, man, I I called him out. I called him, I called Sam Burns out. I said you guys were supposed to be these two names that were gonna be leading team USA for a while and you guys have done nothing but fail us and I would consider this a win for Sam Burns as well. He played incredible. There were a few missteps, but I mean it was always gonna be a long shot on Sunday. ⁓ and and he did it and he went and got a solo second. Two and a half million dollars ain't a bad payday. Nathan Hawthorne: It was always gonna be a long shot for Sam Burns and you gotta think about the way that he played on the final day. I think he went three under on the final day, shot a sixty-seven. Not a lot of guys were under par on that final day. A lot of guys were going the opposite way. So he'll be taking a golf course essentially under the same conditions as Wyndham and going out there and putting up a score amongst a number of other people on the leaderboard who were going again, going the other way. Incredibly impressive. Wyndham, I loved how much they went with his caddy big wave Dave, and just you could hear their conversation. And At the end of every single conversation they had before he takes the club and he's finally locked in, Caddy says, All right, good process here. Every single time he's saying, Hey, we've committed to this shot that we are hitting. You go and execute that shot. And I love it. Like you hit the shots you can hit. And if it's a 60-yard slap cut out there that still somehow goes almost 300 yards, go ahead and hit that. And if it's something, if he wants to jump on a nine iron, I love the amount of times on some par threes when he was in between clubs, he's like, no, I'm just gonna jump on one. Because he has so much more confidence getting after one than trying to hold something off. It got him in trouble a couple of times, but I'd rather have that committed executed swing than one where he feels uncommitted and then now everything feels in limbo. Everything he did on Sunday was committed for better or for worse. He weathered the storm early. He played a great back nine. He took advantage of the par fives all throughout the week. ⁓ one of the best par he might have been the best par five player. Had two Eagles throughout the week. Just yeah, he he put on a master class. He got up and down. He didn't let the crowd get to him early. I I love it for Wyndham and for my pockets. Jarod McInroy: Yep. No, that was it was always the right play. I I I had faith in him and and he got it done. ⁓ a lot of other names were very disappointing. ⁓ I'll say there there were some that we called out, you know, ⁓ Xander. Xander played pretty well overall. He he fell victim to to ⁓ taking the bait on some of the holes. He couldn't control a spin very well, which was a problem for a lot of people. So it's it's not just him. ⁓ but he was in He was in the running for pretty much the whole tournament until Sunday. ⁓ so can't knock him. good to see him at least playing good golf and competing again. Scotty, again, the story he he just couldn't put together all four rounds. He the f the f especially on Sunday, man, it was really hard to watch 'cause he had so many opportunities that he just was not capitalizing on, not putting well. Yeah, too in yeah. The patron ch the pageantry is crazy. He's just just so animated and and just blaming anything but himself. And it's it's hard to watch because it's like, dude, I get it. It's frustrating when you're not playing the golf that you're accustomed to playing. But you gotta own it. You gotta move on. You gotta get better and just deal with it. So Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah, he's he does not look like he's having fun playing golf anymore. He's having a he's having a rough stretch and he's still really good at it. But he's having a tough time having fun. There's no there's no lightness, there's no jovial experience to him moving around the course. He is he is hard at work at his task golfing right now. And you wonder when it's start get e it's gonna get it's gonna start to get easier for him. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Solo's solo third. Nathan Hawthorne: You know, obviously he had a child and that can kind of take your focus and attention away. And I don't want to say that that's it, but we've seen it happen for players before. You do it's just a little bit of focus. And it's again, he's not playing horrible, but that's just again speaks to the depth of the tour and how really there's so many guys who can go out there and win on a week to week basis. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Nathan Hawthorne: Also wrong on John Rahm. And really, just let's just be real, all the live guys. And after day one, I was like, yeah, John Rahm's my pick. And then you go and shoot seven over on the second day. Dustin Johnson, top of the leaderboard, shoots eight over. What are we talking about? And you can do that on Saturday on Live, but you can't do it at the US Open. Jarod McInroy: Yeah, it was tough. Do you know No, you cannot do it at the US Open. The when I saw Dustin Johnson's name moving up the leaderboard, I was like, ⁓ okay, hang on now, maybe he's back. No, it turns out he's still ass. ⁓ but Tyrrell Hatton was so close. One shot away from the top five. I said top five and he was s one shot away. It was bogey on the final hole of the tournament. ⁓ it was hard to watch. Nathan Hawthorne: You know how sick that would have been? No. And he snuck in there. And it was one of the this was again, when you see the US opens at a course like Shinnocock and they want everybody finishing over par, being one or two over par actually can move you up the leaderboard. And it's crazy to see like somebody moved up 37 spots like, ⁓ my gosh, how low did they go? ⁓ they were one over today, but everybody just played backwards. ⁓ so again, just some of these guys are so talented. Like Joaquin Neiman, he was plus seven on like the fifth hole of the day on Thursday. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Nathan Hawthorne: And then he finished at plus one. So if he just ⁓ if he didn't blow up, he would have been in contention. ⁓ in contention. But yeah, ⁓ Live Guys had a tough time. The course I thought played fantastic throughout the week. Again, shout out to Wyndham. ⁓ excited for the open. The open's gonna be epic. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. It's gonna be fun. We got an interesting question posed to us by a friend of ours while we were we were out having a couple of beers after a round of golf and it was from Shout out Reed Guernsey. The the best player to never win another major, who is that on tour right now? And I'm interested to see your answer. Who is the best best player in currently in golf who will probably never win? Nathan Hawthorne: Give him the shout out. My Jarod McInroy: Another major, meaning they've probably already won one. I think that's that's a has to be a stibulation, right? Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah, you have to have yeah, you have to have won one. And I think a guy who's won two and they won him real quick, Colin Morikawa, he won the Open Championship, he won the PGA championship, right fresh out of college from Cal. And He's had some injuries, he's tried to go through some swing changes, and he's such a great ball striker. You think any given moment he can get after it. But part of major championships is holding your round together. And when you have to hold your round together and you have to scramble when your irons aren't perfectly dialed, his short game just really is not top class. If he could just probably have a top fifty short game in the world, I'm sure that he would finish far higher and I'm sure that he would have many more wins in his career. But he struggles to get it close to the hole. He struggles to putt, getting up and down. And when you have a guy, again, who's as talented as a ball striker, when he has a great week, he's gonna be in contention. There's no doubt about it. But to win it, sometimes you gotta grit and grind out a major. And it gets hard on some of those days when the wind's blowing. And if you miss the green and you can't get up and down, you know, one stroke here, one stroke there, all of a sudden you blink and you have made no movement on the leaderboard on a Saturday or Sunday. And you're stuck. I think Kal Moraka was a name that's up there. Jarod McInroy: My only thing with Colin is he is still consistently playing pretty good. Like he he was kind of in the mix again this he now, he never made it into the like, you know, the top five names this week at any given time, but Nathan Hawthorne: But he just but he just started playing like this again. There was a two and a half year stretch where you were like, ⁓ my gosh, this guy's in danger of losing a card. Who do who do you think? Who's the name up there? Jarod McInroy: Yeah, so we'll see. For sure. That was a name I thought about. ⁓ my name i I think it's John Rom. It's kinda sad to say at this point, but he he he he keeps getting, you know, ⁓ you know, favorites going into this week and the Masters Week into ⁓ different tournaments and ⁓ and every single time he he keeps coming out and he keeps just not playing four rounds of golf and it's it's it is so important. Nathan Hawthorne: Wow. Jarod McInroy: We saw what Aaron Rye had to do to win his PGA championship. We saw what Wyndham just had to do. He was wire to wire winner, so that was pretty unique, but still like you do have to piece together ⁓ four rounds of golf. You can't go shoot a seventy eight. That's that's unacceptable. It's inexcusable. You can't do it. ⁓ and he keeps doing it. He'll have rounds here and there on on a Friday or Saturday where he'll post a you know, a seventy five and we're like, Okay, that's gonna kill your entire chances at this tournament regardless of what you do on the other three days. And ⁓ yeah, and I think it again, we talked about this with Liv. It comes down to not playing enough competitive golf to to care for a full seventy two holes. It's they have he has to find his way back on tour. And that's gonna be the only way. If he's not if he's playing these hournaments in Liv and you know maybe he won't return. Maybe maybe this is the end of the road for him 'cause he has Nathan Hawthorne: Mm. Jarod McInroy: FU money for the rest of his life. who knows? But I think John and he he the whole point of this is who is the best to not win another. He is still really good at golf. And he still plays incredible golf. And that's where I'm like it sucks, but he might not get it done. And he's just that much better than everyone. He'll probably still continue to show up on Ryder Cups and and compete and win his ⁓ matches like he has in the past. ⁓ so Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah. Yeah. Jarod McInroy: He always shows up for that at least, but who knows? Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah. One thing I will say about Rom is he is indeed a grinder. Once this Live Golf Tour officially shuts down and he makes his way back to the tour, there were grumblings of it happening, along with all the other guys that have already, you know, made their way back to the PGA tour. There could be a case where, you know, he goes through this new PGA tour challenger series and he's the best player out there and then all of a sudden he's back, you know? Speaking of which, are we done with the US Open? Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Yeah, we're done with the US open. That was a good week. Nathan Hawthorne: Bro. Okay. It was a great week. Shout out Shannoncock Hills hosting a great major. The new PGA tour schedule. Congratulations on new branding and a nice press release, thousands of dollars on media, just to do what you've already been doing. I get it. You change the names. Now you've got the PGA Tour Championship series. You've got the PGA Tour Challenger Series. All you did, all you're doing is the same thing. You already have the Corn Fairy Tour. You already have the PGA Tour where there's relegation. The top guys have to, or the bottom guys have to go to the Corn Fairy Tour playoffs. Right now, all you've done is just change the name of things and leave Corn Fairy Tour hanging. I totally get it. So you've got 130-man fields. Now you have no sponsors' exemptions. You've got no alternates for your Championship series event. Cool. Challengers events, right? Now you've got 144 man fields. Who's gonna fill those fields? Right? All you did was change the branding, and now you're asking your sponsors for more money for these bigger events. ⁓ and we added a couple of international events partnered with the with the DP World Tour, which all the top guys already go and play those events, anyways, within their schedule. So again, they haven't changed anything. The biggest problem was that nobody tunes in to watch Corn Fairy Tour golf. On and off week, nobody is going to tune in to watch the bottom 144 players or outside the top 150 go play golf. It's the same deal as the as the Corn Ferry Tour. And you say, okay, right, so 90 guys keep their cards. Okay, that's fine. If 90 are safe, I'm going like just outside the top ninety, and you've got this new relegation, you know, your last chance to requalify. You want to go see Doug Gim, Mark Hubbard, and Jimmy Stanger battle to be back on the championship series? No. Nobody's watching that. And it's no disrespect to them as golfers. But again, the issue is the product on the course. That's where the money is. That's where the media deals are. That's how the cash keeps flowing in. And so again, to sit here and say that this is going to be too ultra competitive championship series. Like it's it's just not. You've got the PGA tour again, you've got a rebranded Corn Fairy tour. I don't care what they say, how they try and shape it up, more purses, more international events, different formats. I don't care. It's the same thing. You just rebranded it. You put a fresh coat of paint on it. And I respect what you're doing. That's what a good CEO does, right? He says, What's already in the company that we can maximize? He nailed it. You did a great job. Roloff tipped the cap to you, but I just come on now. I'm not buying it. We're gonna end up with the same thing. Top players playing in the top events and and then, you know, getting angry when they don't win and angry that the money's too small or angry that they have to travel too much. It's it's all the same stuff. Jarod McInroy: Mm-hmm. Nathan Hawthorne: And you know what they also did? They tried they tried to sneak in the players' championship like it's a different event. They said, we're gonna play a full, I think it's like a a full 20, 20 event schedule on the ⁓ 20 event schedule on the championship series, plus the players' championship and the four majors. What do you mean plus the players championship? That's a one of your events. What do you mean plus ⁓ in addition to no, it's one of your events. I ain't buying it. Come on. Jarod McInroy: Whoa. Yeah. Listen, I got nothing to add. I think you nailed it. ⁓ here's what I'll say. We we came in very we're wound we're wound up today. We need ⁓ we need something lighthearted to to keep this pod going. What what do we got next here? Nathan Hawthorne: I'm still gonna watch. I'm still gonna watch. What do we have next? So we've got let's get into some NFL. That's our that's our bread and butter. We love to talk NFL. And actually, no, before we get to NFL, I've got a fun segment for you. ⁓ and this is and this is gonna be yeah, this is gonna be golf related. I wanted to bring this in at the end. I'm gonna bring it in now since we're already on the topic of golf. And ⁓ there's some things that you say while you're playing around as a general golfer. And we are going to play keep or cut. Jarod McInroy: Love it. There we go. Let's have some fun. Mm-hmm. Nathan Hawthorne: with eight different sayings. You get to keep three, cut five of golf sayings while you're out on the course, whether you're playing by yourself or with other people. We'll even add a punishment to it every time you say it. You get a stroke at it. You get you get a stroke at it. Like Brooks Kepka says, we gotta start stroking, guys. Okay. Are you ready? Right. I'm gonna give you eight, right? And I'm gonna and I'm gonna give them to you. You're not gonna know what they are. So you you gotta we gotta blind rank here. Okay. All right, number one is that was the line. Jarod McInroy: It's a stroke. So I really gotta pick the three that I like the most. What's next? Yeah. I'm ho I I already have a couple in mine I'm holding out for, but ⁓ I gotta cut it. That's such a good one though. It's so good. I have to. I have to. I can't take the first one. But that's such a good one. Had the line but it just left it short. It's tough. Nathan Hawthorne: You're gonna cut that one? Okay. All right. Okay. Okay. ⁓ number two. That's a good bogey. Jarod McInroy: Mmm That's another one. I like that one a lot. That's I'm gonna have to cut that one too. I think there's a few better ones. That's that's so good. Nathan Hawthorne: Okay. Number three, sit or sit down. Any variation of sit down. We're we gotta keep down. Keep and sit down. All right. Jarod McInroy: Yeah, see we gotta we gotta keep that one. Yeah. Yeah, s sit has to it it's just it's too good. You gotta talk to your ball. You gotta yeah. Nathan Hawthorne: Okay. Next one. Yeah, I got a hold of that one. Jarod McInroy: ⁓ I'm k I can cut that one comfortably. I hate that. Nah, I'm not a fan. Nathan Hawthorne: Cut that one. You hate that one? Okay, next one. Next one. How does that not spin? Jarod McInroy: I don't get a hold of it enough, I guess. I feel like that one you really would would keep that like in a heartbeat 'cause you're you're baffled constantly at the lack of spin that you're getting on some of these muni greens, but I'm gonna cut that one too. I know, I I hear ya. I hear ya. I'm gonna cut that one though. Nathan Hawthorne: Is that is that one more me? nippin' ⁓ brother. I know why you're nipping. Okay. You're gonna cut that. Okay, so we've been through four we've been through five. You've only kept one. You've only kept sit or sit down. Okay. Okay. Yep, you got three more. Okay. ⁓ Jarod McInroy: Yeah. So I still got three more. ⁓ shoot. Mm. I should have kept it's a good bogey. It's all right. Nathan Hawthorne: That's okay over that's okay over there. Or it opens up over there. Jarod McInroy: ⁓ yep, keep. See, that's that's the one I ⁓ certainly wanted was the the relentless positivity. You hit a shot and especially when when you're playing with someone who doesn't know the course the way you do, if we're on Heron Lakes, I know when my ball is okay. You know exactly which hole I'm talking about. I'm talking about greenback number eight. You cut the corner, everyone's like, ⁓ that's OB, there's trees there. No, I know exactly where my ball is. Nathan Hawthorne: Ha ha ha. Said, I'm gonna find that. Jarod McInroy: It is findable, and it is a short pitch over a bunker. Nathan Hawthorne: Okay, keeping it. Keeping it. ⁓ next one is this one's a little bit more about the setting. ⁓ it's so pure out here. Jarod McInroy: We're keeping it. Hm. I'm gonna risk it and cut it because that yeah, that that is a good one. I there's nothing better than coming out to a nice course and just going, God, this is so pure. Cause we play a lot of not so good courses also, so we can really appreciate the good ones. But I'm gonna have to cut it. Nathan Hawthorne: Okay. And last one, that'll work. Or that's still in play. Jarod McInroy: I feel like that's pretty similar though to the one I already have. I regret this. Nathan Hawthorne: The which one? That's okay over there? Jarod McInroy: Yeah, it's pretty similar. But that that'll work is I I guess that's more of like a that's not not the result you were looking for or not the shot you were looking to play. ⁓ I use that one a lot. I do use that one a lot. So I'm gonna keep that. I a variation of it for me is more just like that'll yeah, that yeah, that'll work. That yeah, that'll play. Yeah. Alright, I like that. I like my list. That's a good three. Nathan Hawthorne: Mm-hmm. Yeah, so the That'll play. That'll play. That'll work. Okay. We're gonna keep that. Yeah, that's a good list. Okay. ⁓ honorable mention was I'll find that. ⁓ that's mostly me. I feel like nah, I'll find that. We'll find it. Okay. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. We'll find it. Nathan Hawthorne: Just to recap, what we kept sit or sit down. We're keeping sit or sit down. We are keeping that's okay over there. And we are keeping that'll play. Those are the only things you're allowed to say. You can't say, ⁓ it's so pure out here. You can't say, that was the line. You can't say, that's a good bogey. You can't say, Yeah, I got a hold of that one. Nothing. ⁓ and you can't say, how does that not spin? Jarod McInroy: Love it. Nathan Hawthorne: Aga agae. That's a good bogey. ⁓ Jarod McInroy: That's a good bogey is gonna hurt. That 'cause that that is a really good one, especially when you just when you're in ch you're in a bad place and you make the smart play and you eat the bogey. Or you just make a few terrible shots, you hit one into the hazard, and then you just get on for what would be a par, ⁓ but you have to take the stroke penalty. Yeah, it's a tough one. But I don't need it. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah. When you roll in a twenty five footer for bogey, it feel it feels like a birdie. 'Cause you you got a stroke st statistically, you got a stroke back. I'm always getting my strokes back. I'm gonna get that stroke back. All right, that's ⁓ that's all I got for you on the golf side. Jarod McInroy: Ugh. It might as well be. Sure did. Yeah. Sure did. Love it. That's a lot more lighthearted. We're in a good mood now and I think we're in a good place for a quick NFL segment as well. Nathan Hawthorne: Yes, indeed. We are going to do our first, and sorry for our listeners out there, we're going to do some NFL tiers. If you are not watching this, it's going to be a little bit harder. We'll try to set it up for you the best that we can here. We are going to create a tier list of NFL teams right now. So we are going to share the screen here for the first time live on the pod. And we are going to set up NFL tiers. Now, if you cannot see this, we've got several different NFL tiers. We've got five. We've got S, your S tier, your superstars, your contenders. We've got A. That's your, you know, A, that's a good group. Solid but missing pieces. We've got R, I'm sorry, we've got B for just average. Just average teams. Nothing not a lot to write home about. We've got R for regroup. You've been a few tough years, but you know, there's some there's some promise behind it. And we've got D for dumpster fire. D for dumpster fire. So I'm gonna give Jared a couple of teams here. And we are going to build this tier out together. Jarod McInroy: I do want to clarify one last thing too for the listeners. R is basically C. It's A, B, C, D. ⁓ and then S is is the best. But I also want to say for me, I can still put a contender in A. I that that you can contend in A. You're still good. S I have I hold out yeah, and I'm holding out S for the top, the absolute top. Nathan Hawthorne: Are you can listen, this is this is your tier list. Tell you what, I'm gonna even get a narrow this screen up a little bit. Yeah, yeah. Jarod McInroy: ⁓ I like that. There we go. Okay. Boom. All right, what teams we got? Nathan Hawthorne: Now, I'm not gonna ask you I'm not gonna ask you about all these teams. You're gonna see a lot of teams on here, but it might not be the team you you're thinking. First, we have the Raiders. Jarod McInroy: Love The Raiders that is a ⁓ see it's really hard 'cause I don't think they're S A or B. They don't need to regroup. Nathan Hawthorne: Are they a dumpster fire? Jarod McInroy: I'm gonna say no, I'm gonna put him in R for regroup. I will this is what they say. They n I will say they need to regroup on on the rest of their roster. They have a direction that they're going in, but you have to you have some stars that you need to flip right now, ⁓ like Max Crosby, you have to get some assets, ⁓ and and I don't think they necessarily have ⁓ the picks to build the team that they want to of the future. So ⁓ they need to regroup and figure out how they're gonna round out the rest of their roster around Fernando Mendoza and make sure he doesn't fall flat. Nathan Hawthorne: Okay. Next we have got the Miami Dolphins. Jarod McInroy: Yeah, that's that's a D. I'm sorry. I Nathan Hawthorne: ⁓ the dumpster fire. The ho for the for the hometown kid? I guess that you're not really from there. Yeah. Jarod McInroy: Dude, I just I think I think we're in a tough spot, man. I think we're really in a bad spot. ⁓ and and maybe they'll prove me wrong, but just ⁓ just a a question mark at head coach, a question mark at quarterback. ⁓ we do have a lot of picks. We have a new GM who might turn this thing around and maybe we jump up a few tiers. But as of right this second going into the season, we're a dumpster fire. We're we're no good. Nathan Hawthorne: Okay, I understand. I'm not hating, you know. I I hope for the best. Up next, we've got the Los Angeles Chargers. Jarod McInroy: Thanks. That's a B tier team. That's they don't move me as an A tier, and I know a lot of people are probably gonna want ⁓ in an A. I think you would probably put ⁓ in an A. They're not. They're gonna show you yet again. I we're I'm done making excuses for Justin Herbert. They need to do it. Go do it. You wanna be an A team, you wanna be an S team, go do it. That's all I'm asking this season. I'm not gonna get into anything else other than that. Go do it. Who's my next team? Nathan Hawthorne: Okay. You know, I I think they have an A tier coach and an A tier quarterback. Your next team is the Pittsburgh Steelers. Jarod McInroy: You wish. It's another B tier team. They they're missing pieces, man. They they got a few they they I don't know. I d I don't hate the roster. And I like some of the moves they made. I think Michael Pittman's fit is gonna be ⁓ interesting. We'll see how it works out. ⁓ DK is always a question mark. Aaron Rodgers, how he'll play this year, who knows? ⁓ so I'm gonna say B. Borderline playoff team. Nathan Hawthorne: Okay. Okay. Okay. Up next we've got the Kansas City Chiefs. Jarod McInroy: Not yeah. I I have to I'm gonna put ⁓ in S. They're an S tier team. One one one off yeah. He's fine, bro. He's had an ankle injury for fourteen years. He's fine. They're fine. He's good. Andy reads the goat. Like it it is what it is. And again, not the biggest fan of ⁓ but I'm not gonna I'm gonna give credit where credit's due. When you win that many Super Bowls and you go to that many Super Bowls, ⁓ and then you just have one year of injuries, like I I can't knock you. ⁓ Nathan Hawthorne: S tier Mahomes off an injury, shaky offensive roster? You gotta give you the respect. Okay. Another team maybe deserves some respect, maybe not. Philadelphia Eagles. Jarod McInroy: A tier. I got ⁓ an A. Yeah, they're they're a solid ball club. I think they have everything they need to win. ⁓ th I think the the coaching staff is gonna be their biggest handicap. ⁓ so we'll see, but I I think they they got everything they need to get it done. Nathan Hawthorne: A tier. Okay. We've got a couple more teams here. We've got six down and a few more to go. We're gonna go with the team that was just in the Super Bowl, the Denver Broncos. Jarod McInroy: Mm. Denver Broncos were not in the Super Bowl, but they were in the AFC championship. They're an A tier team, yeah. They they're still good. ⁓ again, it's it's hard with the I can't knock them because Bo Nick's got injured. Like we we have to assume he's coming back and he'll get back to what he was doing. The defense is incredible. Sean Payton's still Sean Payton. ⁓ They're they're an A tier team for sure. Nathan Hawthorne: Okay. Okay. And now we've got a team that I think it's gonna be I think I know what you're gonna say here. We've got the Green Bay Packers. Jarod McInroy: that's an R that's an R. ⁓ put them in R next to the Raiders. They they they have no direction. I think they they need help. ⁓ And they're gonna they're gonna run into more issues than they think. That Christian Watson contract was atrocious. ⁓ we we need yeah, we need more out of Jordan Love, Matt LaFleur. I know you have your gripes with them. I think the rest of the division is so so much better also. Like they're all making moves, so like they they very well could be the worst team in their division. Nathan Hawthorne: That was ridiculous. That's like Myers Leonard. Really good right now. Okay. Yeah, I I couldn't agree more. And again, it's not that they're bad. They just need to they need to come back together on a few things. They're probably better than a beer t they're probably better than B tier teams, but they're just they're not performing like it, you know? Jarod McInroy: Is Josh Jacobs gonna play football? Do we is the jury still out on that? Like Nathan Hawthorne: ⁓ yikes. Actually that's a great question. I the jury is definitely still out. But I know that ⁓ things can always get hairy when your girlfriend is a OnlyFans model. I'm not sure if that's gonna get ⁓ monitored just for saying that. Anyways, Lions, Detroit Lions. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. The Detroit Lions are a A tier team. Again, it's a team they got everything they need. ⁓ it's just a matter of if they're gonna go get it done. You the it ⁓ with these teams, these A tier teams, it's just they have to string together good game after good game in the playoffs. That's what it's gonna come down to. Can they do that? They have everything they need to do to do that, but ⁓ it's just a matter of if they will or not. It's an A tier team. Nathan Hawthorne: A tier team. Okay. Okay. Up next, the Baltimore Ravens. I'm curious what you do here. Jarod McInroy: Ooh. Just because they have a first time head coach, I'm putting them at A. ⁓ they're not not not quite S. Nathan Hawthorne: Wow, you were talking a couple weeks ago like this was an S tier squad. Jarod McInroy: They're better than the Bengals. Do you wanna give me the Bengals, I'll tell you where they're at. Nathan Hawthorne: That is fair. I will not give you the Bengals. I need you to defend the Ravens. Why only A tier and not S tier? I know you said there's a new head coach, but you still got a superstar quarterback in a roster that seems pretty stacked. Jarod McInroy: That's an A tier team. And an it's it's an unproven wide receiver room. I think it comes down to that. We have one guy. We have Zay Flowers and then we have a lot of ⁓ potential and question marks. Mark Andrews is old. ⁓ the defense is is still solid, but also a team that is very injured on the defensive side of the football. ⁓ yeah, again, they just need to prove they can go string together wins in the playoffs. ⁓ they have they have everything they need. It's just can they go get it done? Nathan Hawthorne: Okay. Jarod McInroy: And can Jesse Mentor be ⁓ a a good head coach, I guess we'll see. Nathan Hawthorne: Okay, and the last team I'm going to give you today, the Houston Texans. Jarod McInroy: Mm-hmm. Ooh. Dude, you know what? This isn't this might be a a hot take. Nah, I'm gonna put them in A. I want I I want them I want them in S so bad, but put them in A. I I can't put them in S yet. Dude, they're really, really good. I I really like what what they're doing. ⁓ they're so close. If if they if CJ Stroud puts up the numbers I expect him to Nathan Hawthorne: Wow. Jarod McInroy: And their defense continues to do what their defense does. ⁓ and you know I'm a big fan of D'Amico Ryan's. I they they might be on that S tier next th ⁓ they're so can they be like an A plus? Can we create a tier? okay. They're they're A. They're A they're not they're not quite S. I I'm I'm reserving that that S tier for a few teams, man. Nathan Hawthorne: Yep, yep. cannot be an A plus. You're either you're you're either a s you're either S tier. Okay, they're A tier. Okay. I Yeah. I had I had my list, but because we only have one S tier team, the Kansas City Chiefs, which is historically S tier, but may not be S tier, I'm trying to figure out who another S tier team is. Yeah. Seattle Seahawks. Okay. Seattle Seahawks are S tier. Jarod McInroy: Mm-hmm. For me, well the Seahawks, they're an S tier team. Yes. Super Bowl champs, they pretty much retain the whole roster. ⁓ yeah. I'm they're they're S tier for sure. If I'm see that's a again like if Buffalo didn't hire freaking Joe Brady, like I would give him the nod, but like I can't. I really can't. ⁓ if the Patriots didn't have all these off field issues, like I Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah. Jarod McInroy: would probably give them the knot, but I can't. Like d there's a lot of A tier teams that I'm like, they're fringe. Yeah, Patriots could be a beer B tier. Yeah, they they certainly could be. I I think they could have just gotten hot when when they saw an opportunity and and did what they did, but Nathan Hawthorne: Hear me hear me out. Hear me out. I th I think Patriots are B tier team. I think they could be a B tier team. Jarod McInroy: Dude, honestly, I I think there's only two S tier teams the more I look at it. Like I think you can get the Rams close. Yeah, exactly. That's I think I think the Rams are right there. No, you know what? I'd I'd give the Rams S tier. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's a that I know, I know, I know. They're S tier. 'Cause they were they were a solid, solid A last year. ⁓ and honestly, dude, they were a pass deflection away from winning their division. Nathan Hawthorne: They just got Miles Garrett. They just got Miles Garrett. Yeah, they're insta S tier. But all I'm saying Jarod McInroy: That that weird pass deflection two point conversion with the Seahawks and then having a whole different playoff run than what they had in front of them. now I still think Seattle is the better team, but ⁓ that's that. That's all I got for you. I think there's at ⁓ at most three S tier teams. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah, yeah. Okay. Okay. So we're gonna So we're gonna keep a log of this. Obviously, I'm gonna save this. And then we will revisit this again. We'll do we'll do the other teams in another list, or we'll just kind of fill out what we have here, and then we'll do one pre-training camp to round this out, one last one, and then we will look at this right before the start of the season and then into the season, we'll get to re-rank these suckers. And I can't wait. And also. Jarod McInroy: I can't wait. Nathan Hawthorne: Also, let us know. Do you like seeing these tiers? Do you like seeing these rankings? All of our listeners, all of our watchers, if you like seeing this kind of stuff, we'll bring you more of it. You guys just gotta let us know. Just listen, we're gonna I'm gonna publish this list with your face in no context, especially to the R. And people are be like, what do they mean by that? Jarod McInroy: And let us know what you think. D did we do a good job? Do you agree? Do you disagree? And you know what? If you're a fan of the San Francisco forty Niners and you got something to say, let us know. We'll respond. Nathan Hawthorne: Say it with your chest. We'll we we are probably the most responsive podcast in the entire country. And it's not bots, it's us. It's us. But I think that's gonna do it for today, no? Jarod McInroy: No, it's you and me. Yep, that's it. Nathan Hawthorne: All right, ladies and gentlemen, that is episode eighteen of the Know Your Personnel podcast. Once again, my name's Nathan Hawthorne. This is my co-host Jared McEnroy and we will see you guys on the next one.
