- 0:00Chapter 39 and probably 40 from the book of Jeremiah.
- 0:05Dear Lord, please be with us as we read through this these
- 0:09chapters and let the Holy Spirit give us wisdom and insight.
- 0:13We ask this in Jesus name, Amen. So this is about the fall of
- 0:18Jerusalem. In chapter 39, it says this is
- 0:22how Jerusalem was taken in the ninth month or in the ninth year
- 0:28of Zedekiah, king of Judah. In the 10th month,
- 0:33Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with
- 0:36this whole army and laid siege to it.
- 0:39Now usually when I see these things about the months, I mean
- 0:43they they do they are documented.
- 0:46So it's something you can double check with history and to find
- 0:50out when something happened. But the thing about reading by
- 0:55the Bible, if you're in the US and you're not familiar with
- 1:00this already, the, the months in Israel are different than the
- 1:03months here. So because it says the 10th
- 1:06month, and I actually saw this when I was like looking up
- 1:10something else, I noticed that some people were equating it to
- 1:13October. And that's not when the 10th
- 1:17month would be. The 10th month would either be
- 1:18January or December or January, depending on certain times of
- 1:24the year. I mean, as far as Israel,
- 1:27Israeli calendar compared to the Gregorian calendar, so there are
- 1:31different times. So this is talking about like
- 1:34for the US the December, January time frame and not October.
- 1:38And as I was looking this up, I just thought, you know, these
- 1:42they, these are documented. You know, it usually tells what
- 1:45what year the king, what year of the King's reign.
- 1:49And sometimes it says springtime, sometimes it says,
- 1:52you know, just different things. Like it actually gives you some
- 1:57reference in time on these passages.
- 2:00And a lot of times I just read through it and skip over it.
- 2:02But for some reason I just thought a tenth month and you
- 2:09know, this was just kind of a specific detail and for some
- 2:12reason I decided to look it up. So this is interesting and I
- 2:17don't want to read too much into it, but it's just let me tell
- 2:22you what the significance is and see what you think.
- 2:25If there's symbolism, because we know that the Bible will have a
- 2:29literal events and they are just exactly what they say they are
- 2:33in the Bible. But often there is like a
- 2:36symbolism, there's a repetition, there's a reoccurrence that
- 2:40especially in prophecy type things, it and history too, it
- 2:44repeats itself. So when we start seeing these
- 2:47patterns, it's really interesting and and I feel like
- 2:51this could be a pattern. I'm not saying it is, but here's
- 2:56the significance. Like I said, I'll read what I
- 2:58found. So the 10th month in the Bible
- 3:01is Tibet, which corresponds to parts of December and January on
- 3:06the Gregorian calendar. This month holds significant,
- 3:10often somber historical and theological meaning, notably
- 3:15representing the beginning of the siege of Jerusalem by
- 3:20Nebuchadnezzar and the time Esther was brought before king.
- 3:27I heard, I don't know, I heard Sarasius, I don't know how to
- 3:30say that name. But this is the historical and
- 3:35theological significance. The siege of Jerusalem on the
- 3:3810th day of the 10th month marked the beginning of the
- 3:40siege that led to the destruction of the First Temple.
- 3:45This event is commemorated with a feast day in Judaism called
- 3:49Asara Baitavet. So that's something that is, you
- 3:55know, definitely significant. And then you have Queen Esther
- 3:59was taken to King Xerxes, I guess, in the 10th month, which
- 4:05led to her becoming queen and ultimately saving her people
- 4:10from a genocidal plot. So it's just kind of interesting
- 4:13this happened in the 10th month. And then here's another thing
- 4:17that's really significant is Noah's flood.
- 4:21The receding of the floodwaters also began in the 10th month,
- 4:26marking a transition and new beginning.
- 4:30So the symbolism found in this is that completeness,
- 4:34completeness, and divine order. The number 10 is often
- 4:38associated with divine order and completeness in biblical
- 4:42numerology. And this is seen as a time when
- 4:44God's plans come to fruition. You know, this is prophecy going
- 4:50back to Jeremiah, just this was the prophecy that God had given
- 4:54to Jeremiah and he told them Jerusalem was going to be
- 4:58conquered. And then so going back to the
- 5:01symbolism, it says transition. It can symbolize a transition
- 5:05from mourning to joy or a time of divine intervention and
- 5:12diligence. So again, I just think I think
- 5:16there is some significance to this, especially with those
- 5:19events that all occurred in the 10th month.
- 5:22You could say that's a coincidence, but the more I
- 5:25study the Bible, it may seem like a coincidence to us, but it
- 5:29also seems like this is God's plan.
- 5:31It's not a coincidence. There's a lot of things in life
- 5:34that we think, wow, that was really a coincidence.
- 5:36Like that's so wild that this happened and this happened and
- 5:39this has happened all at the same time.
- 5:41Like we couldn't have planned that, but all of a sudden it
- 5:43happened. I don't think that's just by
- 5:46chance. I think God does make things
- 5:49happen in certain 4 reasons. The the big question is do we
- 5:54understand what God's trying to do with these coincidences we
- 5:57experience? And I don't know.
- 6:01I just think that some things are, are like that.
- 6:04And the fact that Jerusalem fell on that day, that Queen Esther
- 6:09was taken to King Xerxes in the 10th month, and then Noah's
- 6:13flood, the waters began to recede in the 10th month.
- 6:17And they were all significant events in Israel's history.
- 6:23And they were significant moments in Israel's history.
- 6:27It's not just that multiple things happened on a similar
- 6:31month. You know, it's like if you take
- 6:32that, you could say that about anything in a calendar year,
- 6:35like, but these were very, very significant events.
- 6:39And so that's what I guess I paid attention to with that.
- 6:42These are major events that happened in this time frame.
- 6:45So I just thought it was significant.
- 6:47And maybe there's more meaning to it, but just something to pay
- 6:49attention to it. So.
- 6:52And on the 9th day of the fourth month of Zedekiah's 11th year,
- 6:56the city was broken through. So it looks like there was six
- 7:00months between the time he began the siege and the time it ended.
- 7:04Like it was six months before they broke the wall down.
- 7:06I just think that's interesting too.
- 7:09And there was something else that kind of, you know, that
- 7:13when you look at prophecy, there's these like three, 3 1/2
- 7:17years in future prophecy. And so I was curious, I was
- 7:23like, well, what happened like 3 years before all of this?
- 7:26And it, you know, Zedekiah was the king at the time of the
- 7:30siege. So, but prior to him, and it was
- 7:33like 11 years prior to him was Jehoiah Kim.
- 7:37And Jehoiah Kim, it's interesting during his reign
- 7:42when the the king of Babylon made him like his vassal or his
- 7:48his like servant. And it's interesting because God
- 7:52said if you submit to the Babylonians, you will live, but
- 7:56if you resist them, you will die.
- 7:59And so Jehoiakim, he did submit to the king of Babylon, but
- 8:05three years later he turned against him and he did get
- 8:09killed. And so that is just, you know,
- 8:14showing again, like God's Providence.
- 8:16Like when he says it, he means it.
- 8:19And then I don't know if there's any significance with the three
- 8:22years, but I just thought that was kind of ironic.
- 8:24I mean, we could our coincidence that I've not done a study on
- 8:29how many different significant things happen for three years.
- 8:33I mean, think about it, Jesus's ministry was about three years.
- 8:38There's, there's a lot of three years, three, 3 1/2 years
- 8:43throughout the Bible. I know there's lots of
- 8:45significance in those, but I haven't really done a study for
- 8:48it. And I don't want to get too far
- 8:49off track from this chapter that we're studying, but just
- 8:53interesting things you find when you're reading the Bible, I
- 8:55guess. So going back to Scripture.
- 8:58Then all the officials of the king of Babylon came and took
- 9:01seats in the Middle Gate, Nergal Shirez of Samgar, Nebo
- 9:07Sarisakim, a chief officer, Nergal Shariza Sharizer, a high
- 9:13official, and all the other officials of the king of
- 9:16Babylon. When Zedekiah king of Judah, and
- 9:20all the soldiers saw them, they fled.
- 9:23So again God said submit to them and you'll have your life.
- 9:26But instead they flee. So they left the city at night
- 9:31by way of the King's garden through the gate between the two
- 9:34walls and headed toward the Araba.
- 9:38And the Araba is a footnote says it's the Jordan Valley is where
- 9:42they went through. But the king but the Babylonian
- 9:46army pursued them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of
- 9:51Jericho. They captured him and took him
- 9:54to Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon at Ribla in the land of
- 10:00Hama, where he pronounced sentence on him.
- 10:03Now if you remember, Jeremiah told Zedekiah, you are going to
- 10:07see this king with your own eyes.
- 10:09And it's kind of interesting like when, you know, like
- 10:13sometimes when somebody is disobedient to God, like an
- 10:17enemy of God goes and harms God's people, God will do the
- 10:23same to them as they did to his people because God is just.
- 10:29So it's so important for us to listen to God, to obey God
- 10:35because you'll see why. I mean, Zedekiah is a good
- 10:39example of this. First of all, remember he said
- 10:42submit to him. But Zedekiah just wouldn't have.
- 10:44He wouldn't listen. Nobody would listen to Jeremiah.
- 10:47And so if he would have maybe submitted to Babylon, I mean, if
- 10:51he would have, he would have lived because God said it.
- 10:55That was something that the word of God that came through
- 10:58Jeremiah. So that's another thing why we
- 11:00need to know for sure. Like we can't just take people's
- 11:03words because there can be false prophets too.
- 11:06So we have to have discernment. We have to know from God, and I
- 11:11think the only way you can do that is over time when you think
- 11:16or believe that something is from God.
- 11:19And you will see over time if it is, because if it's from God,
- 11:23it'll be good. If it's not from God, it'll
- 11:26probably be a trial or trouble. And I think over time with trial
- 11:31and error, we do get better at discerning between this is from
- 11:37God or it's not from God. It's my imagination or it's
- 11:40something I made-up or it's from the enemy, because those are the
- 11:44three possibilities that I can think of.
- 11:46I don't know if there's anything more.
- 11:47It's either from God, from our own mind, or from the enemy and
- 11:52we have to get to a discerning place which discernment is a
- 11:58gift of the Spirit. So knowing the difference, that
- 12:01means we just need the Holy Spirit to be activated in our
- 12:04life where we can pray to God for that.
- 12:06It's like, God, give me discernment about this.
- 12:08Let me know, you know if this is from you or if it's my own
- 12:13thought or if it's an enemy. I mean, God can do that.
- 12:17But over time, the more we trust God, the more we communicate
- 12:19with God, the more we have this give and take with God where we
- 12:23ask God for some things and then he of over time clarifies it
- 12:28with us. And then we know how to trust
- 12:30him. And we can, you know, people
- 12:32hear God in different ways. And it's only over a time that
- 12:39you can come to trust that you're hearing correctly anyway.
- 12:46So he comes, you know, he's captured.
- 12:49And they take Zedekiah the king of Judah to the Babylonian king
- 12:54there at Ribla, or Ribla, the king of Babylon, slaughtered the
- 12:59sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and also killed all the
- 13:05nobles of Judah. Now don't you think Zedekiah was
- 13:10regretting his decision when he sees all of his sons
- 13:15slaughtered? So he gets to witness that, and
- 13:19then what comes next? Then he put out Zedekiah's eyes
- 13:24and bound him with bronze shackles to take him to Babylon.
- 13:31This is also something to that that I think is ironic,
- 13:36coincidental, and maybe it's just God's justice.
- 13:40Zedekiah would not listen to God.
- 13:42And Jeremiah told Zedekiah, you're going to see the king of
- 13:45Babylon with your own eyes. And he didn't listen.
- 13:49He didn't obey. And Jeremiah said, you know,
- 13:51like submit to him and you will live.
- 13:53And he kept telling people this and they would not listen.
- 13:57So all the things that they didn't listen to then come
- 14:00against them. And it's just like I said,
- 14:04interesting that he said you're going to see him with your own
- 14:07eyes. And he did see him.
- 14:08And he saw things he probably never ever in his life wanted to
- 14:11see. And then they take his eyes out.
- 14:14So then he can't see anything anymore, and that had to be like
- 14:18terrible. And then they bound him with
- 14:21bronze shackles, so he's not going to be getting out of that
- 14:23and took him to Babylon. The Babylonians set fire to the
- 14:27royal palace and the houses of the people and broke down the
- 14:31walls of Jerusalem. Nebu Nebu Zaradin, commander of
- 14:38the imperial guard, carried into exile the to Babylon the people
- 14:44who remained in the city, along with those who had gone over to
- 14:49him and the rest of the people. But Nebu Nebu Zuradan, the
- 14:54commander of the guard, left behind in the land of Judah some
- 14:59of the poor people who owned nothing, and at that time he
- 15:04gave them vineyards and fields. Isn't that interesting?
- 15:10Like the enemy? I don't know what the ulterior
- 15:14motive for that was. You know, it's hard to think
- 15:17that when they're doing all these other things, they would
- 15:19actually have compassion on people.
- 15:21But then again, you also think about like, God's Providence
- 15:25and, you know, God. God looks for the humble.
- 15:30And, you know, maybe these people were submitted to God and
- 15:35maybe God to decide, you know, moved him, influenced him
- 15:39because people can be influenced by spiritual, the spiritual
- 15:43realm, whether it's by good or evil spiritual things.
- 15:47And perhaps, and this is only my opinion, this is not in the
- 15:51biblical, but perhaps God just influenced him that way.
- 15:55And he was like, well, they don't have anything.
- 15:57They're not going to come against us.
- 15:58They, they're, you know, it's not a threat to us.
- 16:01So we can leave them and let them have these vineyards and
- 16:04fields. And that could just be, that
- 16:07could have been a way of God's provision for these poor humble
- 16:11people. Because God always wants to look
- 16:13out for the poor and those who are needy.
- 16:15And that's what he kept telling Jerusalem.
- 16:18He's like, I don't want your or the leadership of Jerusalem or
- 16:21Israel. He's like, I don't want all your
- 16:23sacrifices. I want you to do the right
- 16:25thing. I want you to take care of
- 16:26orphans and widows and, and the list goes on.
- 16:28And the poor people like do the right thing.
- 16:31And so again, this is like what? In my mind, it's like God's
- 16:35Providence. This is what God wanted to
- 16:38happen. And this is what happened.
- 16:41Verse 11. Now Nebuchadnezzar, king of
- 16:44Babylon, had given these orders about Jeremiah through Nebu
- 16:49Zuraidan, commander of the imperial guard.
- 16:52Take him and look after him. Don't harm him, but do for him
- 16:57whatever he asks. Now, isn't that a coincidence or
- 17:01ironic? God is speaking to Jeremiah.
- 17:04Jeremiah's beating, being obedient to God.
- 17:08He's warning people. He's being ridiculed constantly
- 17:12for the people. They won't listen to him.
- 17:13He feels like his his call is like useless, that nothing is
- 17:18working from it. And he hates his life because of
- 17:21what he's doing. But he's being a servant of God.
- 17:24He's doing what God asked. And you know, God also did say
- 17:28that anybody who stays here will be killed.
- 17:31And so Jeremiah, somehow he's staying in Jerusalem.
- 17:36And yet at the same time, God probably had somebody like moved
- 17:44by, you know, whatever, by his spirit, who Nebuchadnezzar says
- 17:48don't harm him, do whatever he asks.
- 17:51Isn't that strange? Somebody and you know that's
- 17:53being captive. This is again how God can do the
- 17:58impossible. Do you think Jeremiah expected
- 18:00this army who's putting fire to the city of Jerusalem to anybody
- 18:04to have compassion on him, anybody that would not harm him?
- 18:09Do you think he expected he was harmed by his own people?
- 18:12Do you think he is expecting the enemy not to harm him?
- 18:16But yet this is what happens. So Nebuzu Raiden, the commander
- 18:22of the guard, Nebu Shazban, a chief officer, Nergal shares a
- 18:30high official, and all the other officials of the king of Babylon
- 18:35sent and had Jeremiah taken out of the courtyard of the guard.
- 18:40They turned him over to Gidalia son of Ahikam, the son of
- 18:48Shapfan, to take him back to his home.
- 18:52So he remained among his own people.
- 18:56While Jeremiah had been confined in the courtyard of the guard,
- 18:59the word of the Lord came to him.
- 19:01Go and tell Ebid Malik the Kushite.
- 19:05This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says.
- 19:08I am about to fulfill my words against this city, words
- 19:14concerning disaster, not prosperity.
- 19:17At that time they will be fulfilled before your eyes.
- 19:21But I will rescue you on that day, declares the Lord.
- 19:26You will not be given into the hands of those you fear.
- 19:30I will save you. You will not fall by the sword,
- 19:34but will escape with your life. Listen to this because this is
- 19:38important because you trust in Me, declares the Lord.
- 19:44So again, God's also using Jeremiah once again to go to
- 19:49this Kushite and tell him, hey, don't worry, just you trust in
- 19:53me. You're going to be OK.
- 19:57So that's the end of chapter 39. So I'm going to read the
- 20:00questions and answers about this chapter, and it's just very
- 20:05interesting to me, you know, historically repeated over and
- 20:08over again about how. If we trust in God, we can see
- 20:13historically if we're obedient to God and we trust in him, Look
- 20:18at the impossible things God can do when there's disaster falling
- 20:22on everyone. Look at there's just a few that
- 20:26God takes care of. But there's you also see in the
- 20:30documentation of all this that there's probably only a few who
- 20:34submit to God and the majority of the people blow him off.
- 20:39They didn't listen to Jeremiah. Jeremiah was prophesying for
- 20:41like 23 years, I think, and nobody would listen to him.
- 20:46And he kept telling them this is coming, this is coming, this is
- 20:49coming, but they didn't listen. I feel like we are in that same
- 20:53mode today because of what I see online.
- 20:57I've never seen this as much as I have recently that a lot of
- 21:04like really strong believers are telling people you need to
- 21:09repent, you need to get close to God because Jesus is coming
- 21:13soon. And I know I had my own
- 21:16experience with that with dreams that I had after I got baptized,
- 21:22after I truly submitted to God and and intended to be obedient
- 21:27and not be a hypocrite to what God teaches us.
- 21:31And when that was my intention, that's when I started having
- 21:34dreams and my dreams were about Jesus return and about the
- 21:40rapture. Honestly, I've had three rapture
- 21:43dreams and and I never was seeking that.
- 21:46I really didn't even know anything about that.
- 21:49And I just think it's really weird that I had those things
- 21:52happen again. You could say just coincidence,
- 21:55but why are so many other people having these same dreams?
- 21:59And why did I feel this sense of urgency like telling people
- 22:04about this, you know, 'cause now a lot of people look at me, make
- 22:08fun of me because they're like, Oh my gosh, everything you talk
- 22:10about is like end times related. And I try not to because it's
- 22:14not so much about end times, but it's just like get close to God.
- 22:19I mean, that ultimately is, I mean like the really the end of
- 22:23this age. It's, it's going to be an end to
- 22:27all the bad things in life, honestly, like when Jesus
- 22:31returns, that's when it's going to be good again.
- 22:33That's when we're going to have true peace.
- 22:36That's when there's going to be this progression into eternity,
- 22:40into the, the blessings that God has in store for all those who
- 22:44turn to him. And so it's something it's more
- 22:48about a preparation of, you know, you don't want to miss out
- 22:51on what God has planned. And we need to all of us need to
- 22:56be obedient to God right now. And I believe like, especially
- 23:02reading this, how long Jeremiah was saying this to people, you
- 23:07know, did, did God just probably knew what I would do once I
- 23:12started having dreams and things.
- 23:13And, and you know how I started this podcast that he knew what I
- 23:17would do when these things happened to me.
- 23:20And so that's what I'm doing. Like, is it going to be another
- 23:2350 years before Jesus returns? I don't know.
- 23:28We'll only have to wait and see. I had a dream that made it seem
- 23:32like it was going to be a lot sooner than that.
- 23:35And after the end of next year, we'll find out if it's true or
- 23:39not. So in the meantime, I am
- 23:43encouraging everyone to get close to God because it's better
- 23:48to be prepared than unprepared. Especially when Jesus told the
- 23:53parable of the ten virgins where half the people were prepared
- 23:57and the other half were not, and the ones who were not and had to
- 24:01do a few things to get ready, it was too late and the door was
- 24:05shut. And I don't want to be one of
- 24:09those people who wasn't prepared.
- 24:11And Jesus returns and he's like, hey, I was warning you.
- 24:15You didn't listen to me. I was warning you through
- 24:17people. You ignored them, just like
- 24:19these people of Israel ignored Jeremiah.
- 24:23Nope. You know that we don't want to
- 24:24listen to it. And you're saying bad things
- 24:26about what's going to happen to God's city of Jerusalem.
- 24:31And they wanted to put him to death for it.
- 24:33But he's like, I'm speaking on behalf of the Lord.
- 24:36And so I think with the number of people who are saying this, I
- 24:40mean, it's not going to do anybody harm to get ready,
- 24:44meaning get right with God, get all of the sin that separates
- 24:49you from God out of your life. And you do that with the power
- 24:53of the Holy Spirit. Like ask God, you know, go to
- 24:56him and just if you mean it, because he's not going to just
- 25:00do lip service, but go to him if you mean it and just tell him,
- 25:04you know, that I want to get rid of all the messed up stuff in my
- 25:07life and I want to be close to you and I have struggles, but I
- 25:12need your help. He wants us to be humble with
- 25:15him and realize we can't do it on our own, that we need him.
- 25:19And he will send, you know, if we say we're sorry for the
- 25:22things that we've done that offended him, He will send us
- 25:26the Holy Spirit to help us. And it says to be with us and
- 25:30remain with us until the end. So we will have this power of
- 25:35God that will help us live our lives the way God wants us to.
- 25:42And we're not going to be perfect because it does say
- 25:44we're not perfected. We won't have immortal bodies
- 25:47until Jesus returns. So there's still going to be
- 25:50like some, you know, times where we don't do what God would want
- 25:55us to do, but those times get fewer and fewer.
- 25:59And when we do, we immediately go to God and say, I messed up.
- 26:02That's all God wants. So I just think that we really
- 26:07need to pay attention to what's going on in the world and a lot
- 26:12of it aligns with Bible prophecy.
- 26:13Start reading Bible prophecy, start studying it, get into the
- 26:18Bible. I mean, subscribe to this
- 26:20podcast because that's what I'm going to be doing is going
- 26:22through this. I'm in the prophetic books
- 26:25currently, but I've done a recording for almost all the New
- 26:32Testament books. I started at the beginning of
- 26:34Genesis and I've been working my way through and I'm going
- 26:36chronologically now with the prophets.
- 26:39And the, the whole point is also to make me accountable, to make
- 26:43me stay in the Bible, in the word of God.
- 26:46And then to also share this with other people, to encourage other
- 26:50people and to maybe get people thinking about these things,
- 26:54like is it just coincidence? Are these things repetitive?
- 26:58Should should we be looking at these things?
- 27:00Can we see patterns and, and can we help other people get closer
- 27:07to God? Because that's ultimately what
- 27:09he wants. I mean, he wants the his
- 27:11children in the Kingdom to be increased, you know, go forth
- 27:15and multiply. You know, he wants, he wants
- 27:18children. He wants obedient children who
- 27:21love him. And Jesus said, if you love me,
- 27:23obey my commands. So he wants, that's what he
- 27:27wants. That's what he's after.
- 27:28He loves us, and the question is, do we love him back?
- 27:32Are we willing to sacrifice? Are we willing to let our lives
- 27:35be a living sacrifice? Like Jesus paid the ultimate
- 27:38price on the cross of his life and sacrificed his life so that
- 27:43we could inherit things like him in the Kingdom of God.
- 27:47Like as Jesus's brothers and sisters, like this is the
- 27:51ultimate plan. There's an inheritance and he's
- 27:54saying, OK, who you know, it's think about this like we can
- 27:58relate to this in in the world when say a parent has something
- 28:04that they can give to their children, but there are certain
- 28:07qualifications that they're not going to give their children
- 28:10unless the children are a certain way.
- 28:12And if the children, you know, are disobedient, they won't have
- 28:17the benefits of the inheritance and they'd be written out of the
- 28:20will. Well, that's kind of like what
- 28:21God is doing too. Like he's offering.
- 28:24He's like, here's the way that you can inherit what I have
- 28:26planned for you, but you can choose not to do it.
- 28:29But I'm just so I can't give it to you if you don't accept it.
- 28:35So we have to make that decision.
- 28:39Are we going to accept God as Lord of our life?
- 28:44Are we going to let him rule our life?
- 28:45Are we going to allow him to get rid of the sin that separates us
- 28:51in our life and let it go and just say, I'm done with it.
- 28:55I don't want it anymore. God take it from me.
- 28:59And it's hard to transition out of that.
- 29:03But there's a benefit to it. And that's what God is putting
- 29:08before all of us and the decision that we all have to
- 29:11make. Are we going to hang on to the
- 29:14the sinful things that people enjoy and let it go in order to
- 29:21be obedient to God and show Him that we love Him by being
- 29:27obedient, by listening? Because there are blessings that
- 29:29come with that. And it has a lot to do with the
- 29:33future Kingdom. So if this is the first time
- 29:36that you've ever heard it, it's really important to know this
- 29:41and it's important to be in the word of God to learn more about
- 29:44it and to share this with others.
- 29:46So I hope, I think I'm only going to do chapter 39 because
- 29:50I've this has gone a little bit longer than I thought and I
- 29:52still have to read the questions and answers.
- 29:53So I'm just going to do the 39 today.
- 29:56And but if this has been helpful to you, please subscribe if you
- 30:01want to come back for more or share this with somebody too
- 30:05that needs to know this. So I'm going to go through the
- 30:06questions and answers, and then this will be wrapped up.
- 30:10So was a long siege typical? You know, we said that was about
- 30:146 months. Some scholars believe the
- 30:16Babylonian siege of Jerusalem lasted one plus years.
- 30:21Others, dating events differently, believe it lasted 2
- 30:25plus years. Lengthy sieges were not
- 30:27uncommon, sometimes lasting a number of years.
- 30:30The Assyrians, for example, laid siege to Samaria for three
- 30:34years. Who's that #3 again?
- 30:37The Babylonian siege of of Tyre lasted 13 years.
- 30:42The city of Ashdod once withstood a siege by the
- 30:47Egyptians for 29 years. The longest siege, The longest
- 30:52known siege sieges often lasted until the food supply was
- 30:57exhausted and the people began to suffer from starvation and
- 31:01disease. That's also interesting because
- 31:05when you read the Seals of Revelation, it's first there's a
- 31:10conqueror that's going out to conquer, then there's wars.
- 31:13And we know from Jesus there's wars and rumors of wars all the
- 31:16way until the end. And then after that comes like
- 31:21inflation or famine, starvation or scarcity, I guess, because it
- 31:29talks about like how much it would cost just for bread,
- 31:33something extremely high. And so that is, I believe the
- 31:38third seal. And then right after that is
- 31:42like death. And it says Hades follows that.
- 31:45So you know, that could be the starvation that people
- 31:50encounter. So these are this is kind of
- 31:53like the sequence of events. And this is also what God had
- 31:56prophesized through Jeremiah to the people of Jerusalem to say
- 32:00that you will fall by sword, by famine, by it's very, it aligns
- 32:05like there's this pattern again that we also see in the seals of
- 32:08Revelation that come at the end of end of the age.
- 32:14So how did they breakthrough the wall?
- 32:16Armies sometimes use battering Rams to breakdown city gates.
- 32:19Other times they tunneled under the wall using wooden beams to
- 32:24keep the wall from falling in on top of them.
- 32:27They then set free the supports, causing the wall to collapse.
- 32:32Sometimes invaders used ladders or built huge earthen ramps to
- 32:37reach the top of the wall. Why did foreign officials of the
- 32:42king sit in the city gate? This was a place where city
- 32:45business was normally conducted. Conquering armies typically took
- 32:49control of the existing form of government.
- 32:52The Babylonian officials set up their command center in the
- 32:55Middle gate, which was probably strategically located at the
- 32:59most accessible area of the city.
- 33:02How could Zedekiah and his soldiers escape?
- 33:05Since the Babylonians has surrounded the city, the king
- 33:08and his soldiers may have made preparations for their escape
- 33:11when they saw the end. Apparently, they were able to
- 33:15make their initial getaway under the cover of darkness and
- 33:19similar circumstances. Others have escaped using bribes
- 33:22or disguises, perhaps as women, since women and children were
- 33:26sometimes permitted to go free. Why kill all the nobles?
- 33:30About 20 years earlier, Nebuchadnezzar had besieged
- 33:34Jerusalem and deported some of the nobility.
- 33:37But Babylonians patience with the city had apparently run out,
- 33:42so they so they used brutality to intimidate the people of
- 33:47Judah. Killing the nobles was intended
- 33:50to teach a lesson to others who who might still want to oppose
- 33:54them. Why didn't Nebuchadnezzar just
- 33:57kill Zedekiah? Nebuchadnezzar was not content
- 34:01to merely conquer Judah. He wanted his barbarous tactics
- 34:06to demoralize and intimidate other nations as well.
- 34:11Allowing Zedekiah to live after so much personal and political
- 34:16devastation was perhaps worse than death.
- 34:22How did the king of Babylon know about Jeremiah?
- 34:26The Babylonian leaders probably had heard about Jeremiah from
- 34:29those who had surrendered or been captured.
- 34:32They may have considered him a hero because he appeared to be a
- 34:36supporter of their cause. That's interesting because
- 34:39Jeremiah was saying, you know, obey the Babylonians and it'll
- 34:43go well with you. So maybe they interpreted it as
- 34:46he's on our side as opposed to God really told Jeremiah that
- 34:50that was going to be the case. That's interesting insight.
- 34:54So why would a Kushite trust in the God of Israel?
- 34:59The EP that Ibed Malik was a Kushite probably means that he
- 35:04was from the area known today as Sudan.
- 35:09Ibed Milek was a foreigner who had apparently been assimilated
- 35:14into Jewish culture. But while the Israelites were
- 35:18intrigued by false gods, he was disillusioned by them.
- 35:23Perhaps his upbringing in Cush showed him the futility of
- 35:27trusting in idols, causing him to turn instead to the God of
- 35:32Israel. He demonstrated his faith when
- 35:35he saved Jeremiah. How did Jeremiah get caught
- 35:41after being released? The events of chapter 40
- 35:46probably occurred before those in chapter 39.
- 35:50Throughout the book of Jeremiah, the sequence of events is
- 35:53difficult to reconstruct. The writers and editors of the
- 35:56Hebrew Scriptures were not as concerned about the chronology
- 36:01as we are today. They were more concerned about
- 36:03the message. Sometimes they used events as
- 36:07lit as a literary device. By arranging narratives with the
- 36:11most important events first are by placing the most the most
- 36:16important event last. There is no right or wrong, just
- 36:19different cultural methods. So that's the end of chapter 39.
- 36:25Next time we'll go start with Chapter 40.
