- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Dirty Rush, The Truth about Sorority Life with
- 0:04Speaker 1: your hosts me Gia, Judice.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Daisy Kent, and Jennifer Kessler. Hey, it's Daisy Kent back
- 0:13Speaker 2: on Dirty Rush. You guys. My mind is blown by
- 0:16Speaker 2: all these stories about pinning. We had so many callers
- 0:19Speaker 2: call in and they're all so different. Some of them
- 0:21Speaker 2: are crazy. So we're going to dive back into this
- 0:24Speaker 2: and talk more about these pinning ceremonies, what they mean
- 0:27Speaker 2: from school to school, and just learn some more because
- 0:31Speaker 2: I literally had no idea this is what pinning was about.
- 0:35Speaker 2: How are you doing, Christina, I'm doing great, thank you.
- 0:38Speaker 2: We've been getting kind of people's takes on what pinning
- 0:41Speaker 2: is or how it happened at their school, So I'm curious,
- 0:45Speaker 2: what was your pinning like or what did it all entail?
- 0:50Speaker 3: It's a mine was actually kind of a different not
- 0:53Speaker 3: the stereotypical traditional penning.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Okay.
- 0:57Speaker 4: I was a senior at CAL when I met my husband.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Now, oh, I know, cute, huh thirty almost thirty.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Years but oh congrats, that's amazing.
- 1:07Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 1:08Speaker 3: We uh so we started dating our senior year and
- 1:11Speaker 3: and to be honest with you, I'm not sure why.
- 1:13Speaker 3: Originally we used to do pennings on during Monday night meetings,
- 1:17Speaker 3: and it was usually a surprise members of our fraternity,
- 1:20Speaker 3: you know, we'd kind of filter into the meeting, and
- 1:23Speaker 3: it was really cute that way anyway, but ours, I
- 1:27Speaker 3: don't know if it was because maybe we hadn't we'd
- 1:30Speaker 3: only been dating maybe six, you know, eight months or something,
- 1:32Speaker 3: or I know that a lot of our friends were
- 1:34Speaker 3: in different sororities and fraternities, and so we had planned
- 1:36Speaker 3: this graduation party with our parents and some of our
- 1:40Speaker 3: friends that were in different houses.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Oh so fun.
- 1:43Speaker 3: We were hosting it at at a hotel, you know,
- 1:46Speaker 3: nearby hotel, and so I did unbeknownst to me, he
- 1:51Speaker 3: decided to go ahead and pin me there. So his friends,
- 1:53Speaker 3: like some of our one, you know, one set of
- 1:54Speaker 3: his best friends from home were there that didn't even
- 1:56Speaker 3: go to cal.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Oh that's special.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Yeah, a couple of his friends for fraternity, and a
- 2:01Speaker 3: couple of friends that were in different fraternities. And then
- 2:06Speaker 3: one of you know, a couple good friends of mine
- 2:08Speaker 3: that were in my sorority, and again a couple that
- 2:09Speaker 3: were in different sororities.
- 2:10Speaker 4: So it was really cool to kind of have a
- 2:12Speaker 4: big group there. But I think what was so strange about.
- 2:15Speaker 3: My pinning is that my parents were there, My aunt
- 2:18Speaker 3: and uncle were there.
- 2:20Speaker 2: So did you did you know you were going to
- 2:22Speaker 2: get pinned before it happened?
- 2:24Speaker 4: No, we were.
- 2:25Speaker 3: It was just really a graduation party. We had, you know,
- 2:27Speaker 3: just stereotypical party, round table's.
- 2:29Speaker 4: Dinner bar, right.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:31Speaker 3: And then one of the it wasn't even my husband one,
- 2:35Speaker 3: it was one of the other guys stood up and
- 2:38Speaker 3: you know, started giving a speech, and so.
- 2:39Speaker 4: I was called to the you know, kind of the
- 2:41Speaker 4: front of the room, and they started bringing me.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Flowers, which is a traditional part of the penning, usually
- 2:47Speaker 3: a pinning when the guys come into our our I
- 2:51Speaker 3: guess it was usually our dining room. They would all
- 2:53Speaker 3: bring roses, so they would hand they would hand the person.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Everyone would have a single rose, and so the guys
- 2:59Speaker 3: did that. And then of course my husband now had
- 3:02Speaker 3: a big book here roses, So that was obviously really cute.
- 3:05Speaker 2: So at your school, was it if like, because I've
- 3:08Speaker 2: heard like a different like different kinds of opinions and
- 3:12Speaker 2: what they mean at different schools, was yours? Like, if
- 3:14Speaker 2: a guy pins you, does that mean is it kind
- 3:17Speaker 2: of like like before engagement thing or like they want
- 3:21Speaker 2: to be with you forever? Or what does it like,
- 3:24Speaker 2: what does it necessarily mean at your school? Well?
- 3:27Speaker 3: That's you know, that is so interesting, And I was
- 3:30Speaker 3: trying to think back truthfully to remember everything because it's.
- 3:33Speaker 5: Been a few but I think, you know, I don't
- 3:36Speaker 5: think we were one hundred percent thinking engagement right at
- 3:38Speaker 5: that minute minute, but I think most people that were
- 3:40Speaker 5: willing that were that were that ended up getting pinned.
- 3:44Speaker 4: We're clearly pretty serious, right, yeah.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Because you kind of had to stand up and say,
- 3:50Speaker 3: you know, I want to put you know, my fraternity
- 3:52Speaker 3: pin on somebody.
- 3:53Speaker 4: So it was kind of I.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Guess a precursor maybe, yeah, But I guess we hadn't
- 3:57Speaker 3: really discussed at that point, you know, getting married or
- 4:01Speaker 3: engagements or anything.
- 4:02Speaker 2: I just had a thought of like Twilight when like
- 4:05Speaker 2: how the wolves like imprint on someone. I'm my usiness
- 4:08Speaker 2: kind of like that. So how long after you got
- 4:12Speaker 2: pinned did you guys get engaged? Oh, let's see.
- 4:16Speaker 4: It was probably it was maybe less than a year
- 4:18Speaker 4: that we were really young.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, that's so great.
- 4:22Speaker 4: I know that is wild.
- 4:23Speaker 3: I know I have children, that are that age now,
- 4:27Speaker 3: and it's funny to think that we were already engaged
- 4:30Speaker 3: and married, and so it's very funny.
- 4:32Speaker 2: That is so funny. Do you have any kids that
- 4:34Speaker 2: are like in college that have done like the pinning thing?
- 4:38Speaker 3: No, I mean both our kids have graduated from school,
- 4:41Speaker 3: and no, they did not do the pinning things. So
- 4:43Speaker 3: I don't even know. Is that something that's that's still
- 4:46Speaker 3: going on? Is it still popular now?
- 4:48Speaker 2: It was funny. We've talked to a few people today,
- 4:50Speaker 2: Like one college's pinning was like a roast, so like
- 4:54Speaker 2: the guy and the girl would be like, oh, like
- 4:56Speaker 2: we want to get pinned, and then everyone in there
- 4:59Speaker 2: for turn and sorority would roast each other. And then yeah,
- 5:03Speaker 2: I was like, this sounds like a horrible idea. And
- 5:06Speaker 2: then there was another We just talked to a couple
- 5:11Speaker 2: and they had graduated recently and they did like a pinning,
- 5:16Speaker 2: but it was like the girls went and did like
- 5:19Speaker 2: went on a party bus, did their thing. The guys
- 5:21Speaker 2: went on their party bus and then they met up,
- 5:23Speaker 2: but the girl didn't know she was getting pinned, and
- 5:25Speaker 2: then they were all kind of just like drunk partying
- 5:28Speaker 2: and she get pinned.
- 5:31Speaker 3: So yeah, it's changed at our The one I remember
- 5:34Speaker 3: the most truthfully is some of our best friends from
- 5:37Speaker 3: school and they had a much more traditional pinning. It
- 5:41Speaker 3: was very cute though. We even snuck in for them.
- 5:43Speaker 3: We snuck in her. She has a twin sister, and
- 5:45Speaker 3: then he had a sister from southern California that flew
- 5:49Speaker 3: up and so they had been hiding in the sorority
- 5:51Speaker 3: house so that she.
- 5:53Speaker 4: Didn't know that they were there. Yeah, And so that
- 5:56Speaker 4: was super fun.
- 5:57Speaker 3: And then of course I think there was as far
- 5:58Speaker 3: as the parting, I think he I think our friends
- 6:01Speaker 3: did buy maybe a keg or something.
- 6:02Speaker 4: We had a party after.
- 6:03Speaker 2: You know, But that's so fun.
- 6:04Speaker 3: But it was really fun in that situation for her
- 6:07Speaker 3: to have some of the siblings around as well.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Oh definitely. Do most people get pinned like when they're
- 6:13Speaker 2: a senior.
- 6:15Speaker 4: Yeah, I definitely senior, and and it was pretty rare.
- 6:19Speaker 4: And I don't know if that's a California thing. I
- 6:23Speaker 4: don't know.
- 6:24Speaker 3: I mean I feel like maybe in my four years
- 6:26Speaker 3: as a member, I mean, I'm trying to think it's definitely.
- 6:31Speaker 3: I can count on one hand how many pinnings there were,
- 6:34Speaker 3: so it wasn't a super comptanting.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Okay, that's kind of cool. Makes it like special definitely.
- 6:40Speaker 2: And then when you were at the sorority house and
- 6:44Speaker 2: like your friends got pinned that or when you experienced
- 6:47Speaker 2: one that was at the sorority house, was everyone like
- 6:50Speaker 2: dressed this a specific way or like have to wear
- 6:53Speaker 2: like a certain color where they're like candles and stuff.
- 6:56Speaker 2: I'm like visioning, Yeah, no, I know.
- 6:58Speaker 3: In our house was we we're fortunate, we have such
- 7:01Speaker 3: a beautiful home and it's big, and so we our
- 7:03Speaker 3: pennings usually were held on Monday night because that's when
- 7:06Speaker 3: we had to be dressed in I mean kind of
- 7:10Speaker 3: nicer clothes, not you know, nothing fancily. And again we're Berkeley,
- 7:14Speaker 3: so we're not that probably proper.
- 7:18Speaker 4: But if rumor had got gotten out.
- 7:22Speaker 3: That there was maybe a pinning or something, people might
- 7:23Speaker 3: look a little bit nicer. But we typically did at
- 7:26Speaker 3: least have skirts or address on and of some sort.
- 7:28Speaker 3: And so it was during dinner or right after dinner
- 7:30Speaker 3: that kind of did the guys. But the guys definitely
- 7:33Speaker 3: would have sport coats and so they looked way better
- 7:37Speaker 3: than most of us because it was mostly a surprise,
- 7:40Speaker 3: you know, for the girls.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and.
- 7:43Speaker 4: It was I remember it. You know, when you were
- 7:45Speaker 4: freshman sophomore.
- 7:47Speaker 3: You know a lot of times you really didn't even
- 7:48Speaker 3: know the senior very well anyway, you know, in the house,
- 7:51Speaker 3: and so it was kind of fun that they would
- 7:53Speaker 3: all these people coming in and you're just sitting in awe,
- 7:56Speaker 3: kind of admiring the whole process.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Oh for sure, like you're probab, Like, I hope that's
- 8:01Speaker 2: me when I'm seeing You're, like, I can't even imagine
- 8:04Speaker 2: right now, that's so sweet that we honestly we haven't
- 8:08Speaker 2: heard a story yet of somebody that's like fin pinned
- 8:13Speaker 2: like like this, and then it all like transpired into
- 8:17Speaker 2: all this. So that's great. I'm so happy for you guys.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Well, the funniest thing was you said about engagement, Mike,
- 8:23Speaker 3: because we did it at this graduation party. My aunt
- 8:26Speaker 3: and uncle everyone was there, and so my aunt literally
- 8:29Speaker 3: thought we were getting engaged, and.
- 8:30Speaker 4: We were like no, no, no, no, no, no no.
- 8:33Speaker 2: They're like it's happening, it's happening, and they're like, no,
- 8:35Speaker 2: she's getting sin no no, I know.
- 8:38Speaker 3: So I do remember that feeling of like no, no,
- 8:40Speaker 3: we're not ready to be engaged, you know, like that's yeah,
- 8:43Speaker 3: not where we are yet.
- 8:44Speaker 2: That is special though, that you had everyone there that
- 8:47Speaker 2: you like, really care about though, and now like I'm
- 8:50Speaker 2: sure being married you said thirty years Yeah yeah, and
- 8:54Speaker 2: like looking back on that, that's going to be so cool.
- 8:57Speaker 4: Well, you know it is cool.
- 8:58Speaker 3: Like I just to refresh my memory, I did pull
- 9:02Speaker 3: out an old scrap book just to see a few
- 9:04Speaker 3: pictures to remind myself. But yeah, I mean all the
- 9:08Speaker 3: people there were still super good friends with, and it's
- 9:11Speaker 3: it's kind of an interesting, you know, fun.
- 9:13Speaker 2: I love that said you have you have like pictures
- 9:15Speaker 2: from the day when that happened.
- 9:17Speaker 6: Yeah, so I was kind of in scrap into scrap
- 9:20Speaker 6: booking a long time ago, and so my sister had
- 9:23Speaker 6: made taken all the pictures from it and put some
- 9:28Speaker 6: into a little scrap book for me.
- 9:30Speaker 2: That's amazing. I love that.
- 9:32Speaker 3: But you know what else, funny fact the one the
- 9:34Speaker 3: other pinning that I was telling you about a friend
- 9:37Speaker 3: they got married the same year and so they're about
- 9:39Speaker 3: to have their thirty year anniversary as well.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Oh wow, I know, so maybe penny works.
- 9:44Speaker 4: Maybe that's the key. Go Berkeley, who would have thought.
- 9:50Speaker 2: I love that well, thank you so much Christina for
- 9:54Speaker 2: being on here and sharing that with us. We have
- 10:10Speaker 2: Claire and Kara here. So I've been talking to people
- 10:14Speaker 2: all day about getting pinned and what that means, and
- 10:18Speaker 2: I feel like, yeah, every school it means something different.
- 10:21Speaker 2: And I heard you guys have kind of a unique
- 10:23Speaker 2: story about getting pinned because you got pinned together.
- 10:28Speaker 7: Yes, right, Yeah, we had a double pinning, which was
- 10:33Speaker 7: super fun. Our friends went all out and surprised us.
- 10:37Speaker 2: So so what like, what did your pinning look like? It?
- 10:41Speaker 2: What all happened during that ceremony or party? I learned
- 10:45Speaker 2: it could be many things. Yeah, Kara, do you want
- 10:48Speaker 2: to start? Yeah?
- 10:50Speaker 1: Sure, I guess I can kind of give a review
- 10:53Speaker 1: of the night from our perspective. Yes, So it started
- 10:58Speaker 1: out it was something that's that our sorority does is
- 11:02Speaker 1: that it's always a surprise for the girls getting pinned.
- 11:04Speaker 2: So the boy does about it, all their friends know about.
- 11:08Speaker 4: It, the rest of the sorority does.
- 11:12Speaker 1: And the way they surprised the girl is at dinner
- 11:15Speaker 1: that night, they'll have we turn off all the lights
- 11:19Speaker 1: and sing a silly song sort of and passed around
- 11:23Speaker 1: a candle. So that happened to us at dinner at
- 11:26Speaker 1: our sorority one night, and they blow out the candle
- 11:28Speaker 1: right next to you to the girls getting pinned.
- 11:31Speaker 2: So that's how we found out that it was our turn.
- 11:34Speaker 7: We both looked at each other in the middle and
- 11:36Speaker 7: we're like, please going on.
- 11:39Speaker 1: We had no idea because also it's usually pinnings are
- 11:45Speaker 1: between Our boyfriends are both long distance, so it's usually
- 11:49Speaker 1: only couples that are both at the school, so this
- 11:52Speaker 1: was kind of a non traditional one, so we really
- 11:54Speaker 1: weren't expecting it. Yeah, so our boyfriends flew in and
- 11:59Speaker 1: drove in for it, which was really awesome.
- 12:01Speaker 7: Yeah, we had no clue that it was happening, so
- 12:04Speaker 7: our friends did a great job of hiding it and
- 12:07Speaker 7: getting us to dinner because a lot of the time
- 12:10Speaker 7: it's hard to get We were seniors, so we didn't
- 12:13Speaker 7: go to dinner at the house all the time. So
- 12:16Speaker 7: they got us to go to dinner, which was hard
- 12:19Speaker 7: to get us to do. And then we got there and.
- 12:24Speaker 2: So then what happens like when your boyfriend's like came in.
- 12:28Speaker 7: Well, no, so the boys are not at the dinner,
- 12:31Speaker 7: so the dinner is just girls in the sorority and
- 12:37Speaker 7: they pass around the candle and blow the candle out,
- 12:40Speaker 7: and then one of your friends reads a letter from
- 12:43Speaker 7: the boy.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Okay, and then.
- 12:47Speaker 7: They kind of dismiss everyone after dinner, and then you
- 12:50Speaker 7: go back to your apartment or wherever and get ready
- 12:54Speaker 7: and the girls wear a red dress. The girls getting
- 12:58Speaker 7: pinned wear a red dress. Of the girls where black
- 13:02Speaker 7: dresses in this sorority. So our friends had picked us
- 13:05Speaker 7: out red dresses and every they had it all set up.
- 13:08Speaker 2: It's literally like a mini bachelorette party. It is, yeah,
- 13:12Speaker 2: exactly exactly.
- 13:13Speaker 7: And we played like games with all of our friends
- 13:16Speaker 7: came over, just girls, and then we went on a
- 13:21Speaker 7: party bus to a bar or restaurant, like they choose
- 13:26Speaker 7: different bars and restaurants per people. But yeah, we went
- 13:31Speaker 7: to a bar with our all of our friends on
- 13:33Speaker 7: a party bus, just the girls. And then we go
- 13:37Speaker 7: back to the sorority and that's where we do kind
- 13:40Speaker 7: of like a bigger ceremony and kind of the night
- 13:44Speaker 7: has already kicked off, but it kind of turns mind
- 13:48Speaker 7: to a party.
- 13:50Speaker 2: That's so fun. So why did your are your boyfriends
- 13:53Speaker 2: like friends or did they know each other when this
- 13:55Speaker 2: was happening?
- 13:57Speaker 7: So they've known each other just through us throughout this
- 14:01Speaker 7: past year, and so our friends had been texting them
- 14:05Speaker 7: for a couple months and we're like, we really want to.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Make this happen.
- 14:08Speaker 7: This would be so fun. They go to different schools,
- 14:11Speaker 7: so my boyfriend just was coming kind of they he
- 14:15Speaker 7: told him the date that he was going to be
- 14:17Speaker 7: in town, and then Kara's boyfriend was able to come
- 14:20Speaker 7: that same weekend, so they had planned a kind of.
- 14:23Speaker 2: That's so sweet, and are you all still together? Yes,
- 14:27Speaker 2: yeah we are. Yeah, so the pinning is going strong.
- 14:30Speaker 1: I guess way yay, love that yeah, and neither of
- 14:34Speaker 1: us are a long distance now, so kind of no way, Yes,
- 14:38Speaker 1: that's amazing.
- 14:39Speaker 7: Yeah, I guess we could talk a little bit about
- 14:41Speaker 7: the house part too, because that's kind of fun.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Yeah, tell me what happened there.
- 14:46Speaker 7: So when you walk in, everyone in the sorority is there,
- 14:50Speaker 7: and then everyone who's with the pinning party, like on
- 14:53Speaker 7: the bus, comes in and they're like seeing a song
- 14:56Speaker 7: and they lift the girls.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Up that are getting pinned.
- 15:00Speaker 7: Usually it's only one girl, but for us, it was
- 15:02Speaker 7: two of us, and they lift us up and we
- 15:05Speaker 7: all sing the song, and then the boys come and
- 15:09Speaker 7: we do like a one hundred second kiss outside with
- 15:13Speaker 7: everyone around, and then we like sign our names in
- 15:18Speaker 7: our sleeping porch, which is kind of a fun tradition
- 15:22Speaker 7: that our so already had.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Oh that's so fun.
- 15:26Speaker 7: Yeah, and then if people get married, they come back
- 15:29Speaker 7: and circle their names. That's the whole thing.
- 15:31Speaker 1: But oh, no, way, it's a really fun tradition because
- 15:34Speaker 1: there's names going back in that room to like the
- 15:37Speaker 1: sixties or I think the oldest one we found was
- 15:39Speaker 1: from the sixties or maybe the fifties, and there's tons
- 15:42Speaker 1: of names with circles around them, so it's really cool.
- 15:46Speaker 2: So cool. Well, hopefully you guys can go back and
- 15:49Speaker 2: put circles on it. Yeah, we see. That's so fun.
- 15:54Speaker 7: And it's usually only seniors, like the boy girl has
- 15:58Speaker 7: to be a senior.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Where there are a lot of girls in your sorority
- 16:02Speaker 2: that got pinned.
- 16:03Speaker 4: I think a lot. I would say, I feel like
- 16:05Speaker 4: we had an above an average man.
- 16:07Speaker 7: Yeah, they happened like every quarter. We have a couple
- 16:10Speaker 7: per quarter usually.
- 16:11Speaker 2: So okay. Cool. Were there ever girls who like wanted
- 16:14Speaker 2: to be pinned and were like pissed if they didn't?
- 16:17Speaker 4: I think, yeah, I heard stories. I feel like.
- 16:21Speaker 7: Maybe it's people that weren't dating that long so they
- 16:25Speaker 7: didn't know. Yeah, like they tried to choose I guess
- 16:28Speaker 7: more serious relationships.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Was there ever, like a guy that like pinned a
- 16:34Speaker 2: girl and then they broke up and then he would
- 16:37Speaker 2: like pin another girl or are you only allowed to pin?
- 16:39Speaker 2: Like what that would happen? Okay? I was just like, oh,
- 16:41Speaker 2: this could be tea.
- 16:44Speaker 7: There were people that were older that like were written
- 16:47Speaker 7: in porch twice, Like we didn't know who they were.
- 16:50Speaker 7: It was way back. I don't know anyone from like
- 16:55Speaker 7: our year, yeah, or like while we were in college
