- 1:06Christmas story. And so from me to you, Merry
- 1:11Christmas, friend, so great, so great that you and I can share
- 1:15this together. Let's do it.
- 1:17Let us do what we've come here to do and read together this
- 1:21wonderful Christmas story in Luke Chapter 2.
- 1:36At that time, the Roman Emperor Augustus decreed that a census
- 1:40should be taken throughout the Roman Empire.
- 1:43This was the first census taken when Corinius was governor of
- 1:47Syria. All returned to their own
- 1:50ancestral towns. To register for this census, and
- 1:53because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to
- 1:57Bethlehem in Judea, David's ancient home.
- 2:01He travelled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee.
- 2:04He took with him Mary, to whom he was engaged, who is now
- 2:08expecting a child, and while they were there, the time came
- 2:12for her baby to be born. She gave birth to her first born
- 2:16son. She wrapped him snugly in strips
- 2:19of cloth and laid him in a Manger, because there was no
- 2:23lodging available for them that night.
- 2:27There were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding
- 2:29their flocks of sheep. Suddenly an Angel of the Lord
- 2:33appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord's glory
- 2:37surrounded them. They were terrified, but the
- 2:40Angel reassured them. Don't be afraid, he said.
- 2:45I bring you good news that will be great joy to all people.
- 2:51The Saviour. Yes, the Messiah.
- 2:53The Lord has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David,
- 2:59and you will recognize him by this sign.
- 3:02He will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying
- 3:06in a Manger. Suddenly the Angel was joined by
- 3:11a vast host of others, the armies of heaven, praising God
- 3:16and saying, glory to God in highest heaven and peace on
- 3:21earth to those with whom God is pleased.
- 3:26When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherd said to
- 3:29each other, Let's go to Bethlehem.
- 3:32Let's see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has
- 3:34told us about. They hurried to the village and
- 3:37found Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby lying in
- 3:42the Manger. After seeing him, the shepherds
- 3:46told everyone what had happened and what the Angel had said to
- 3:49them about this child. All who heard the shepherd's
- 3:52story were astonished. Mary kept all these things in
- 3:57her heart and thought about them.
- 3:59Often the shepherds went back to their flocks, glorifying and
- 4:03praising God for all they had heard and seen.
- 4:07It was just as the Angel had told them.
- 4:10Eight days later, when the baby was circumcised, he was named
- 4:15Jesus, the name given him by the Angel even before he was
- 4:18conceived. Then it was time for their
- 4:21purification offering, as required by the law of Moses
- 4:24after the birth of a child. So his parents took him to
- 4:28Jerusalem to present him to the Lord.
- 4:30The law of the Lord says if a woman's first child is a boy, he
- 4:35must be dedicated to the Lord. So they're offered the sacrifice
- 4:39required and the law of the Lord either a pair of turtle doves or
- 4:43two young pigeons. At that time there was a man in
- 4:48Jerusalem named Simeon. He was righteous and devout, and
- 4:52was eagerly waiting for the Messiah to come and rescue
- 4:55Israel. The Holy Spirit was upon him and
- 4:58had revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen
- 5:02the Lord's Messiah That day. The Spirit led him to the
- 5:06temple. So when Mary and Joseph came to
- 5:09present the baby Jesus to the Lord, as the law required,
- 5:12Simeon was there. He took the child in his arms
- 5:16and praised God, saying sovereign Lord, now let your
- 5:22servant die in peace as you have promised.
- 5:26I have seen your salvation which you have prepared for all
- 5:30people. He is a light to reveal God to
- 5:34the nations and he is the glory of your people.
- 5:39Israel. Jesus parents were amazed at
- 5:42what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them, and he
- 5:46said to Mary, the baby's mother. This child is destined to cause
- 5:51many in Israel to fall and many others to rise.
- 5:56He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him.
- 6:01As a result, the deepest thoughts of many hearts will be
- 6:05revealed, and a sword will Pierce your very soul.
- 6:11Anna, a prophet, was also there in the temple.
- 6:15She was the daughter of Thanawal from the tribe of Asha, and she
- 6:19was very old. Her husband died when they had
- 6:22been married only seven years. Then she lived as a widow to the
- 6:27age of 84. She never left the temple, but
- 6:30stayed there day and night, worshipping God with fasting and
- 6:35prayer. She came along just as Simeon
- 6:38was talking with Mary and Joseph, and she began praising
- 6:42God. She talked about the child to
- 6:44everyone who had been waiting expectantly for God to rescue
- 6:47Jerusalem. When Jesus parents had fulfilled
- 6:50all the requirements of the law of the Lord, they returned home
- 6:54to Nazareth in Galilee. There the child grew up healthy
- 6:58and strong. He was filled with wisdom, and
- 7:02God's favor was on him. Every year, Jesus parents went
- 7:07to Jerusalem for the Passover festival.
- 7:10When Jesus was 12 years old, they attended the festival as
- 7:13usual. After the celebration was over,
- 7:17they started home to Nazareth, but Jesus stayed behind in
- 7:20Jerusalem. His parents didn't miss him at
- 7:23first because they assumed he was among the other travellers,
- 7:26but when he didn't show up that evening, they started looking
- 7:29for him among their relatives and friends.
- 7:32When they couldn't find him, they went back to Jerusalem to
- 7:35search for him there. Three days later, they finally
- 7:40discovered him in the Temple, sitting among the religious
- 7:43teachers, listening to them and asking questions.
- 7:46All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his
- 7:50answers. His parents did know what to
- 7:53think, son, his mother said to him.
- 7:57Why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been
- 8:00frantic, searching for you everywhere.
- 8:04But why did you need to search? He asked.
- 8:08Didn't you know that I must be in my father's house?
- 8:11But they didn't understand what he meant.
- 8:14Then he returned to Nazareth with them and was obedient to
- 8:17them. And his mother stored all these
- 8:21things in her heart. Jesus grew in wisdom and in
- 8:26stature and in favour with God and all the people.
- 8:40Jesus, we celebrate you. You are a light to reveal God to
- 8:47the nations. Through you and your kindness
- 8:51and your forgiveness and your heart for the oppressed, We
- 8:58begin to understand your heart, the heart of God, and it is a
- 9:03good heart. And we are so grateful this
- 9:08Christmas that you came here to live amongst us, to kick the
- 9:13pebbles on dusty roads, to feel the sun on your shoulders, to
- 9:17love, to laugh, to cry, to hurt, to have your heart broken, to
- 9:23live as one of us. You are incredible.
- 9:27And you know what it is to live in these broken bodies in this
- 9:33broken world, but with a taste of the eternal glory that you
- 9:38prepare for us. So Jesus, we just praise you
- 9:44this Christmas Day. You are the greatest and we just
- 9:49lift you to the highest place in our lives.
- 9:53Our wonderful, wonderful Saviour born this Christmas Day.
- 9:58We pray all these things and offer our lives to you as a
- 10:02living sacrifice. Amen.
