- 0:00Good morning. This is Ground Signal, your daily
- 0:02briefing for people living across borders, time
- 0:04zones, and timelines. Today is Thursday, September
- 0:083rd, 2026. I'm Harper. The Middle East is escalating
- 0:12again, and this time the ripple is wider. Markets
- 0:15are reacting. Oil is moving. And if you have
- 0:18any travel in or near the Gulf region, this morning
- 0:21you need to know what's changed before you go
- 0:22anywhere. Let's get into it. The biggest story
- 0:26overnight is the U .S.-Iran conflict widening
- 0:28into a broader regional war. Iran struck Kuwait
- 0:31in direct retaliation for U .S. bombardments,
- 0:33while the U .S. carried out fresh strikes on
- 0:35Iranian military targets. The fighting has now
- 0:38pulled in Gulf states including the UAE, Jordan,
- 0:41Bahrain, and Iraq, with incidents reported near
- 0:43the Strait of Hormuz and across the wider Persian
- 0:45Gulf. Iran's government says 18 people were killed
- 0:49and more than 100 wounded in overnight strikes.
- 0:52AP is reporting this as part of what may now
- 0:54be a wider Middle East war, not a contained bilateral
- 0:56exchange. The situation is fluid, and the next
- 1:0024 to 48 hours are critical. Watch for what moves
- 1:03first, diplomatic back channels, oil prices,
- 1:06or another round of strikes. In Europe, Russia
- 1:09continued pressure along its existing fronts,
- 1:12with Reuters and AP carrying overnight dispatches
- 1:14on tensions involving European targets. No major
- 1:17new escalation reported there, but the baseline
- 1:20remains elevated. Markets opened Thursday in
- 1:23a mixed posture. The S &P 500 proxy, SPY, was
- 1:27trading around 765 at open. The Nasdaq, 100 proxy,
- 1:32QQQ, Q at roughly 709. Oil is the number to watch.
- 1:37USO was at 141 at the open, up sharply on Middle
- 1:40East risk. When the Strait of Hormuz is in play,
- 1:43energy markets move fast, and that's exactly
- 1:46where we are. On the macro side, the Federal
- 1:49Reserve's next decision lands September 15th
- 1:51and 16th. The Fed is widely expected to hold
- 1:54rates in the 3 .5 to 3 .75 % range, but with
- 1:58oil spiking and conflict risk rising, the inflation
- 2:01calculus can shift quickly. The IMF flagged cross
- 2:04-currents in July. That language is starting
- 2:06to look more relevant by the week. In crypto,
- 2:09Bitcoin is at $77 ,876. up about 1 .5 % from
- 2:14the previous close. Ethereum is sitting at $2
- 2:16,405, up 0 .5%. Solana is at $100 .77, up about
- 2:231%. Crypto is holding its ground in risk on territory
- 2:26this morning, which is notable given the equity
- 2:28jitters. BTC is still consolidating in that 76
- 2:32,000 to 79 ,000 range that's held for several
- 2:35sessions. This is the section that changes what
- 2:39you actually do today, so let's be direct. If
- 2:42you have travel booked anywhere in or near the
- 2:44Middle East, confirm with your airline right
- 2:46now. The State Department has an active worldwide
- 2:49caution advisory, and the FAA has issued guidance
- 2:52for U .S. carriers operating in the region. Flight
- 2:56schedules are changing on short notice. Airports
- 2:58in the UAE, Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain are all
- 3:02operationally affected. Gulf News is reporting
- 3:05that UAE residents should verify all travel plans
- 3:07as of this morning. Do not assume your flight
- 3:10is operating normally. The Strait of Hormuz remains
- 3:13a live disruption point. Marad, the U .S. Maritime
- 3:17Administration, has warned that Iran continues
- 3:19to threaten and conduct strikes on commercial
- 3:22vessels transiting the Persian Gulf and Gulf
- 3:25of Oman. If you're moving cargo or traveling
- 3:27by sea in that corridor, the advisory is clear.
- 3:30Avoid or delay. On currencies, the Peruvian sol
- 3:34is holding at 3 .36 to the dollar. Stable. No
- 3:37major move. The Colombian peso is at approximately
- 3:403 ,154 per dollar, slightly stronger than earlier
- 3:44this week. In Southeast Asia, the Malaysian ringgit
- 3:47is at 4 .04 to the dollar, and Indonesia's rupiah
- 3:50continues to trade around 17 ,700 per dollar.
- 3:53The Thai baht is steady as well. For anyone moving
- 3:57money regionally across Latin America or Southeast
- 3:59Asia, no sharp dislocations to flag this morning,
- 4:02but oil -driven inflation risk is something to
- 4:05keep on your radar if your cost base is dollar
- 4:07-denominated. No major new visa or entry requirement
- 4:10changes to flag today. Thailand's DT5, the five
- 4:14-year digital nomad visa updated September 1st,
- 4:17remains live and active. The U .S. Diversity
- 4:20Visa DV 2026 deadline is September 30th. That's
- 4:23less than four weeks away. If you or anyone you
- 4:26know is eligible, that clock is running. At the
- 4:29U .S. Open in New York, Carlos Alcaraz advanced
- 4:32to the next round on Wednesday after dropping
- 4:34the first set to Jaime Faria. then winning the
- 4:37next three convincingly, 4 -6, 6 -0, 6 -3, 6
- 4:42-2. Francis Tiafoe also moved through, beating
- 4:44Ray Sakamoto in straight sets. The tournament
- 4:47runs through September 13th, and the draw is
- 4:49wide open as the field moves into the second
- 4:51week. In Formula One, the Italian Grand Prix
- 4:54weekend at Monza gets underway this week. Qualifying
- 4:57is scheduled for Saturday the 5th, with the race
- 4:58on Sunday the 6th. This is the fastest circuit
- 5:01on the calendar, and one of the most historic
- 5:04in motorsport. Monza races tend to produce drama,
- 5:07especially with the new generation of power units
- 5:09now in competition. The NFL regular season kicks
- 5:13off on September 9th, less than a week away.
- 5:16All 32 teams are currently 0 -0 and wide open.
- 5:19If you've been saving energy for the season to
- 5:21start, now's the time. Looking ahead over the
- 5:24next seven days, The world travel market opens
- 5:27in Riyadh on September 8th through the 10th,
- 5:29a major industry gathering for anyone working
- 5:31in travel, hospitality, or mobility infrastructure
- 5:34across the Middle East and beyond. Also worth
- 5:37knowing, Tokyo Game Show 2026 is coming up later
- 5:40in September, and MetaConnect 2026 is scheduled
- 5:43for September 23rd and 24th in Menlo Park, California.
- 5:47If you're building in spatial computing or extended
- 5:50reality, that's the event of the fall. Speaking
- 5:54of spatial computing, Apple has effectively scrapped
- 5:56its plan for a lower -cost Vision Pro, according
- 5:59to recent reporting. Samsung Display has halted
- 6:01panel development for the device, confirming
- 6:04that the affordable entry point Apple had been
- 6:06working toward is no longer moving forward. Apple's
- 6:09leadership continues to describe Vision Pro as
- 6:11part of their long -term spatial computing vision,
- 6:14but the timeline for mass market access just
- 6:16got longer. Meanwhile, Meta is putting chips
- 6:19on the table. Meta AI is now rolling out across
- 6:22Quest devices in the U .S. and Canada, beginning
- 6:25with the week of May 18th. And with MetaConnect
- 6:282026 on September 23rd, expect announcements
- 6:31covering VR hardware, wearables, and the broader
- 6:34Metaverse roadmap. The platform race for the
- 6:37next computing layer is very much alive. It's
- 6:39just clearer now that Apple is running it as
- 6:41a luxury play, at least for the near term. For
- 6:44a generation that expects to work, play, and
- 6:46live inside spatial environments within the next
- 6:48decade, that gap matters. Whoever gets to affordable
- 6:52spatial computing first wins the next platform.
- 6:55That's Ground Signal for Thursday, September
- 6:573rd, 2026. The Middle East situation is the story
- 7:00to track today. Keep your travel plans flexible,
- 7:02confirm before you move, and watch oil. Stay
- 7:05informed, stay mobile. I'm Harper. Stay moving.
