- 0:19I would be proud to be in this council. It was an honor. I had
- 0:21so much fun. Tune in every Monday for the Revolution of Purpose solo
- 0:25show and every Thursday for Revolution of Purpose Conversations.
- 0:29Welcome to this week's Revolution of Purpose. A solo show.
- 0:33This episode is all about your calendar and how your calendar
- 0:37is writing your future. Have you ever caught yourself
- 0:41saying, I just don't have time, or I know that I
- 0:45should do something, but who has time to do that?
- 0:48You know, I don't have time to work out. I don't have time
- 0:51to write the book. I don't have time to build the business. I don't have
- 0:55time to work on my marriage. I don't have time to pursue my
- 0:59purpose. It's one of the most common phrases that we use,
- 1:03and most of us believe it's true, like down deep in our
- 1:07identity. But over the past several years, as I've coached
- 1:11people through major life transitions, I've watched them transform their health,
- 1:14their relationships, their finances, their sense of purpose.
- 1:18I've become convinced that we've been asking the wrong
- 1:21question. The issue usually isn't whether we have enough time.
- 1:26The deeper question is, who is deciding how that time
- 1:31is spent? Because time is one of the few things that every
- 1:34one of us receives in exactly the same amount.
- 1:39We all have the same 24 hours in
- 1:42every day, every morning, whether you are a billionaire or
- 1:45barely making ends meet, whether you're 25 or 75,
- 1:51whether you're living your dream or wondering how you got so
- 1:54far off course. You receive the same 24 hours.
- 1:59The difference is not found in how much time we have. It's found
- 2:03in what our time is quietly creating.
- 2:07I think one of the most honest documents you'll ever create is not your resume.
- 2:12It's not your bank statement. It's not your social media profile.
- 2:16It is in fact your calendar, because your calendar
- 2:21doesn't tell me what you say is important. It tells me what repeatedly
- 2:25receives your attention. It tells the truth,
- 2:30whether you want it to or not. In fact, I want
- 2:34to offer you a thought that has completely changed the way I look at my
- 2:37own life. Your calendar is your autobiography written
- 2:41one day at a time, one appointment
- 2:45at a time, one meeting at a time. Every commitment,
- 2:49every yes, every no,
- 2:53every hour that you intentionally invest or unintentionally surrender
- 2:56is writing the story of who you're becoming.
- 3:01Most people think a calendar is simply a tool for managing time.
- 3:05I don't. I think it's something much more profound.
- 3:09I think your calendar reveals your identity,
- 3:13and perhaps even more importantly, it rehearses it.
- 3:17Because every day your schedule is quietly training you to become
- 3:21someone. The question isn't whether your calendar is shaping your
- 3:24future. It already is. The question is,
- 3:28is it shaping the future you actually desire to have?
- 3:32Today, I want to share 3 revelations that completely transformed
- 3:37the way that I think about time, purpose, and identity.
- 3:41Because I no longer believe the most important thing you can do is manage
- 3:45your calendar. I believe the most important thing you can do is intentionally
- 3:49schedule the person you're becoming.
- 3:53Here's my first revelation about this. Your calendar reveals
- 3:57your current identity. Your calendar reveals
- 4:01your current identity. Now, before you push back
- 4:04on that statement, let me explain what I mean. I'm not saying that your calendar
- 4:08tells me everything about you. I'm not saying emergencies don't
- 4:13happen that change your calendar. I'm not saying there aren't seasons in
- 4:17your life where your schedule is dictated by circumstances that are well
- 4:20beyond your control. All of those things are absolutely
- 4:24true. But if I were to look at your calendar over
- 4:28the course of several months, patterns would begin to emerge,
- 4:32not because of one busy week, not because of one unexpected crisis,
- 4:37but because patterns reveal priorities and priorities reveal
- 4:42identity, even if these are things that you're doing subconsciously.
- 4:45I think before we can understand this revelation, we have to clear away 4
- 4:50myths that almost all of us have believed about our calendars.
- 4:54The first myth is this: my calendar simply reflects my
- 4:58obligations. Most people believe they're living a life
- 5:01that has been handed to them. My boss controls my
- 5:05calendar. My kids control my calendar. My clients control my
- 5:09calendar. My church controls my calendar. My responsibilities control my calendar.
- 5:14And certainly there are obligations that we all have,
- 5:18I'm not suggesting that we abandon responsibility, but I am suggesting
- 5:22something that may be more uncomfortable.
- 5:26Even within our obligations, we're still making choices
- 5:31every single day. Every time we say yes to one
- 5:35thing, we are simultaneously saying no to countless
- 5:38other things. Every commitment creates invisible commitments.
- 5:43Every appointment creates invisible appointments that will never happen.
- 5:48When you choose one path, you're choosing not to walk
- 5:52another. Your calendar is not simply a list
- 5:56of obligations. It's a record of thousands of decisions.
- 6:01The second myth I want to tell you about is we tend to think
- 6:05being busy means that we're being productive. Our culture
- 6:09almost celebrates exhaustion. I wish I could be like Judah
- 6:12back here and just take a nap. Well, you can. You just may have to
- 6:16schedule it in your calendar. People wear busyness like a
- 6:20badge of honor. I'm slammed. I've been running all day. I haven't stopped
- 6:25even once. As though being constantly overwhelmed is proof
- 6:29somehow that we're making a difference. But movement isn't the
- 6:33same as momentum. Activity isn't the same as alignment.
- 6:38You can spend an entire day crossing things off your to-do
- 6:41list and never get one inch closer to the life
- 6:45that you're trying to create. I've learned there's a tremendous difference
- 6:50between living reactively and living intentionally.
- 6:54Reactive people spend their days responding.
- 6:57Purpose-driven people, they spend their days creating.
- 7:01One is constantly putting out fires while the other is building something,
- 7:06building something that lasts Being busy
- 7:10doesn't necessarily mean that you're building your future.
- 7:12Sometimes it simply means that you're maintaining your
- 7:17present. Myth number 3, when life slows down,
- 7:21I'll make time for what really matters. Have you
- 7:24ever noticed that someday never seems to arrive?
- 7:28That time when life slows down never seems to actually get here.
- 7:33We tell ourselves, well, when work settles down, Or when
- 7:36the kids get older, or when things are more calm,
- 7:40or when this season passes, then I'll write
- 7:43the book. Then I'll start the business. Then I'll prioritize my health.
- 7:47Then I'll take my spouse on more dates. Then I'll pursue my
- 7:51purpose. But life has a way of replacing one busy season
- 7:56with another busy season. Margin rarely appears
- 8:00by accident. My friends, it has to be created intentionally.
- 8:05The truth is we don't eventually schedule what matters most.
- 8:08We schedule what matters most now,
- 8:12even if it starts with just 30 minutes. And myth number
- 8:164 is this: someone else controls my calendar.
- 8:20This may be the biggest of all 4 of these myths,
- 8:23because while there are certainly seasons where our freedom is limited,
- 8:27There is almost always more choice than we realize.
- 8:31Maybe you can't choose every meeting, but you can choose how you prepare
- 8:35for it. Maybe you can't choose every responsibility, but you
- 8:39can choose whether it aligns with the person you're becoming.
- 8:43Maybe you can't choose every hour, but you can choose some
- 8:47of them. And over weeks and months and
- 8:51years, those choices of you putting
- 8:55yourself as the top priority become a life.
- 8:58They become your life. And that's why I don't believe our calendars
- 9:03primarily reveal our circumstances. I believe they reveal
- 9:07our values because eventually our values
- 9:10always find their way onto our calendar,
- 9:13not perfectly, but consistently,
- 9:17which led me to this realization that completely changed the way
- 9:20I was thinking about time. I stopped asking, how do
- 9:24I become more productive? And I started asking
- 9:28what kind of person would schedule a life like
- 9:32this? Because your calendar doesn't simply tell the story
- 9:36of what you did. It quietly reveals the story of
- 9:39who you believe yourself to be. If you've heard me for
- 9:43a while on this podcast, you know, I talk a lot about identity and
- 9:47a calendar is yet another revelation of who
- 9:51we believe ourselves to be. And once I realized that, I couldn't look at
- 9:55my own calendar the same way again. The second revelation I
- 9:59had about this is that your calendar is rehearsing your future
- 10:03identity. When I first realized that my calendar was revealing my
- 10:07identity, I made a surprising discovery.
- 10:10It wasn't just revealing who I was, it was rehearsing
- 10:15who I was becoming. Think about that for a minute.
- 10:19Every day, your calendar is training you.
- 10:23It's reinforcing habits. It is strengthening
- 10:26priorities. It is creating patterns. It is the
- 10:29outward manifestation of your mental paradigm,
- 10:34casting votes for a particular version of yourself, whether you realize
- 10:37it or not. Your schedule is quietly asking
- 10:41that same question over and over again. Who are
- 10:45you becoming? And every appointment in
- 10:48your calendar is answering that question. I experienced this firsthand
- 10:53when I walked away from my career in the flooring industry in outside sales.
- 10:57From the outside, I didn't, I didn't have to do it. It didn't make any
- 11:01sense. The business was very successful. I made a good bit of money
- 11:04and it really wasn't a difficult job. It provided
- 11:08a good living and people respected what I had built. Nothing was broken,
- 11:13but something inside of me had awakened. I knew there
- 11:17was another chapter waiting for me. At first, I thought what I needed was a
- 11:21new career or a new business. Or a new source of income.
- 11:25That's when I got my real estate license while I still worked there. And I
- 11:28started selling real estate, which I'm still passionate about,
- 11:31but I know it's not my purpose. And looking back,
- 11:35I realized that it wasn't just a new business I needed. It wasn't
- 11:39just a new career. It wasn't even a new source of income.
- 11:44What I needed, what I was searching for was
- 11:48a new identity. Because my old identity had
- 11:52created my old calendar. And for years, my identity was
- 11:56one of an employee. Yes, I was in management, and yes,
- 11:59I was a sales director, and yes, I had people who, who reported to me,
- 12:03but I still reported to the owner of the company. And in my mind,
- 12:08I was an employee. And so I measured success by checking
- 12:11things off of a list because that's what a good worker bee does.
- 12:15I stayed busy. Check. I responded quickly to
- 12:19emails. Check. I solved the next flooring installation
- 12:22problem. Check. I worked harder for my boss.
- 12:26Check. I made tons of money for the owner of the company.
- 12:30Check. There isn't anything wrong with hard work. In fact,
- 12:34you know me, if you know me, I still believe in it. But I realized
- 12:38something. The calendar that helped me succeed in one season of my
- 12:42life was not the calendar that would lead me into the next one.
- 12:47The person I had been could not create the life I
- 12:51believed I was being called to build. I had to stop asking,
- 12:54what do I need to do? And instead, I needed to start asking,
- 12:58who do I need to become? And then
- 13:02the question is, does my calendar match my identity?
- 13:06That question changes everything because before my schedule changed,
- 13:11my thinking changed. I stopped seeing myself primarily
- 13:14as someone who completed task, I started seeing myself as someone who
- 13:18created the future. I had to shift from an employee mindset
- 13:23to the mindset of a CEO, of a founder, of a coach,
- 13:27of a speaker, of an author, of a podcaster, of a creator.
- 13:31And if you notice something, those aren't just job titles. Those,
- 13:35my friends, those are identities. Because a CEO doesn't simply
- 13:39manage today's work. A CEO designs tomorrow's organization.
- 13:44A founder doesn't simply maintain what's been built. A founder
- 13:48imagines what doesn't even exist yet.
- 13:51A coach doesn't just solve problems. A coach develops
- 13:55people. A creator doesn't wait for inspiration. A creator
- 14:00creates. And once I embraced those identities,
- 14:04something fascinating happened. My calendar started
- 14:08changing almost automatically.
- 14:11I didn't wake up one morning and decide, I think I'll color code
- 14:14my calendar today. No. And I respect that.
- 14:18I have an amazing administrative assistant who has a color-coded
- 14:21calendar, and that's why she's my assistant. She's so organized with her calendar,
- 14:26but that wasn't exactly the change I needed.
- 14:29I had to start asking myself different questions, not what color
- 14:34should I make each task on my calendar, but Questions like,
- 14:37if I'm becoming a creator, what am I creating? If I'm a
- 14:41coach, then where am I investing deeply in people?
- 14:45As a CEO, when I'm thinking strategically, am I
- 14:48actually reacting or am I being preactive?
- 14:53Please pardon me while I interrupt your podcast episode with a quick

- 16:50johnstreet.org/clarity. Or reach out to me on any of the social
- 16:54media platforms I mentioned. And now let's get you back to today's
- 16:58episode. I didn't wake up one morning and decide, I think I
- 17:02need to color code my calendar. No, I started asking different
- 17:07questions. There's nothing wrong with a color-coded calendar, by the way. I do use
- 17:10one now, and my administrative assistant is the best
- 17:14at it. And that's why she works for me, because she's so organized in her
- 17:18calendar. Is a rainbow of different priorities, and I think
- 17:21it's amazing. But to actually make the identity shift, there's more than
- 17:25that. I started asking different questions. If I'm
- 17:29being a creator, then what am I creating? Or if
- 17:33I am being a coach, then where am I investing deeply in people?
- 17:36Or if I'm being a CEO of this company, of John Street
- 17:41Global, then when am I thinking strategically instead of just
- 17:44reacting? If I'm becoming a founder, what time have
- 17:49I protected to build something that will outlive
- 17:52today's to-do list? Do you see the difference?
- 17:57I wasn't scheduling tasks anymore. I was scheduling identities.
- 18:01I wasn't putting record podcast on my calendar.
- 18:05I was making an appointment with the creator inside of me.
- 18:10I wasn't simply blocking off time for coaching calls and clarity
- 18:13calls. I was investing in becoming the coach I believe I was called
- 18:18to be. I wasn't setting aside time for strategy
- 18:22because someone told me successful business owners should do that.
- 18:26Instead, I was honoring the CEO that I had chosen to become
- 18:29and taking aligned action.
- 18:33Awaken, become, align,
- 18:36create. And y'all, that's when another realization hit me. The calendar
- 18:40I kept living by was continually recreating the life
- 18:44that I already had. If I wanted a different future, I couldn't
- 18:48keep rehearsing the same life. Because every day you rehearse something.
- 18:53You rehearse stress or you rehearse peace.
- 18:57You rehearse scarcity or you rehearse abundance.
- 19:01You rehearse reacting or you rehearse being intentional.
- 19:05You rehearse comfort or courage, growth or stagnation.
- 19:09Every day your calendar is teaching your mind,
- 19:13this is who we are. And eventually your
- 19:16identity begins to agree. And that's why I believe calendars
- 19:21are far more powerful than most people realize. They're not simply
- 19:25organizational tools. They're training grounds.
- 19:28They don't just help you remember appointments. They help shape the person
- 19:32who keeps those appointments. Which brings us to
- 19:36what I believe is the most practical revelation of all. If your calendar
- 19:40is rehearsing your future, then maybe it's time
- 19:44to stop scheduling your tasks and start scheduling
- 19:47the person you're becoming. The 3rd revelation
- 19:52is schedule the person you're becoming.
- 19:55So if everything we talked about today is true, and if your
- 19:59calendar is revealing your identity, and if your calendar
- 20:03is rehearsing your future, then a very practical question emerges.
- 20:08How do we begin changing that? Not by buying a new
- 20:12planner, not by downloading another productivity app, not by color
- 20:16coding our calendar a little bit better. Those things are helpful
- 20:21and they might help you become more organized, but they won't necessarily help
- 20:25you become someone who is different. I think transformation
- 20:29begins with a completely different question. Instead of asking,
- 20:33what do I need to get this week? Ask yourself,
- 20:36who am I becoming and what would that
- 20:39person schedule for this week? I want to encourage
- 20:44you to stop scheduling your life and start scheduling your identity. And I know
- 20:48that sounds a little bit pie in the sky and maybe a little bit
- 20:51vague, but here's what I mean by that. Most of us open our calendars
- 20:55and immediately begin filling them with tasks.
- 20:59Grocery shopping here, team meeting here, doctor appointment here.
- 21:02Record podcasts here, answer emails here. Those things
- 21:06matter and they have to get done, but they're not
- 21:10the most important thing on your calendar because behind every
- 21:14task, behind everything you schedule, there is
- 21:17an identity. You aren't just going to the gym.
- 21:22You're becoming a healthy person. You aren't just taking your spouse
- 21:25to dinner. You're becoming a loving husband, a present wife.
- 21:29A person who values your marriage and relationship.
- 21:33You aren't just writing a chapter, you're becoming an author.
- 21:38You aren't just making sales calls, you're becoming someone who serves people
- 21:42with courage and with confidence. You aren't just spending time in prayer
- 21:46or meditation, you're becoming someone who lives
- 21:49from a centered and grounded spirit and surrenders to
- 21:53God, your source, your higher power. Do you see
- 21:57the difference? The task may only take an hour,
- 22:01but the identity, it will last you a lifetime.
- 22:05And that's why I no longer think in terms of what do I have to
- 22:08do today? I try to begin with a different question.
- 22:13Who has God called me to become today?
- 22:17If that language doesn't connect with you, try this. Who is the highest version
- 22:21of myself inviting me to become today?
- 22:25Once you answer that question, your calendar
- 22:29becomes so much easier to build because now I'm not simply scheduling
- 22:33activities. I'm giving time to the identities that I want to
- 22:37cultivate. For me, I identified 4 primary
- 22:41identities that I believe describe this next season of
- 22:44my life, and that is CEO, coach, creator,
- 22:48and founder. And those 4 priorities now
- 22:51shape every week that I plan. When I time
- 22:55block, I time block strategically. I'm honoring the CEO
- 22:59of who I am with John Street Global. When I'm preparing for a
- 23:03coaching call with my clients, I'm investing in the
- 23:07coach identity of myself. When I'm writing,
- 23:11when I'm recording a podcast, or when
- 23:14I'm just creating content on Facebook and social media and Instagram,
- 23:19I'm giving space to the creator within me, that identity.
- 23:22When I'm building systems that will one day impact people
- 23:26I'll never meet around the world, I'm thinking like a
- 23:30founder. Now, your identities may be completely different.
- 23:34I'm sure they are. They, they could be father or mother.
- 23:38They could be artist, teacher, entrepreneur, student.
- 23:42It could be leader, friend, servant. It could be healthy person.
- 23:46It could be millionaire. Those specific identities don't
- 23:51matter near as much as the principle behind them. Whatever identities
- 23:55you fail to schedule eventually begin to disappear
- 23:59beneath the weight of everything else that takes priority,
- 24:02because life is incredibly good at filling empty spaces.
- 24:07If you don't intentionally create space for the person you're becoming,
- 24:11Urgency will gladly fill it for you.
- 24:15Emails will fill that space. Meetings will fill
- 24:19it. Notifications that pop up on your phone will fill it.
- 24:22Doom scrolling will fill it. Other people's priorities
- 24:26will certainly fill that space. And before long,
- 24:29you'll wake up wondering why you feel disconnected from the life that you
- 24:32wanted so badly to create. Not because you lacked
- 24:36passion, Not because you lacked intelligence or talent,
- 24:41but because you never gave your future a safe place to
- 24:45live in your calendar, a protected place
- 24:50in your priorities. Think about that. Your calendar is not just
- 24:54making appointments, it's making the room, the space that you
- 24:58need, space for the kind of marriage that you want,
- 25:02space for the kind of health that you desire. Space for the
- 25:06kind of business that you envision, space for
- 25:10the kind of relationship with your higher power, with the source,
- 25:14with the creator of the universe that you desire to have,
- 25:17space for the kind of impact that you want your
- 25:21life to have. If there's no room in your
- 25:24calendar, those things rarely happen by accident.
- 25:29And that's why I believe one of the most spiritual things we can do
- 25:32is align our calendar with our calling, because alignment
- 25:36isn't merely merely believing the right things. Alignment is allowing your
- 25:39calendar to tell the same story your heart has already begun to believe.
- 25:44And that's exactly what happened in my own life.
- 25:48Long before my business changed, my calendar changed. Long before my income
- 25:52changed, my calendar changed. Long before my influence
- 25:56grew, my calendar changed because
- 26:00I stopped scheduling the life I had And started scheduling
- 26:04the life I believed I was being called to create. And that,
- 26:08my friends, is the power of alignment. It doesn't have to
- 26:11look like perfection. It needs to look like direction.
- 26:15One intentional hour, one intentional day,
- 26:19one intentional week at a time. So I want to leave
- 26:23you with an exercise this week,
- 26:27and I want you to read your own autobiography. And I
- 26:31know you may be saying, what do you mean read my own autobiography? Well,
- 26:33it's simple. Um, obviously if you're driving,
- 26:36don't do this right now, but when you are stopped, when you can
- 26:40pull out your calendar, pull out your calendar on your phone, um,
- 26:44when you can pull out your day planner, if you are someone who still has
- 26:47a day planner, kudos to you. I want you to look at
- 26:51it and I don't want you to look at next week or even next month.
- 26:53I want you to look at the last 30 days. And now I want
- 26:57you to imagine something. Imagine that I know absolutely nothing about you.
- 27:01I don't know your name, your age, your career, your faith,
- 27:04your dreams. I don't know what you say matters most to you.
- 27:07The only thing you've handed me is your calendar of the last
- 27:1130 days. What story would it tell?
- 27:15What conclusions would I draw about your life from your calendar?
- 27:20What would I conclude is most important to you and receives your best energy?
- 27:25What would I conclude you value or that you're becoming?
- 27:29Are you becoming healthier? Are you building deeper relationships?
- 27:32Are you growing spiritually? Would I conclude that you're becoming
- 27:35the leader you hope to be? Would I conclude that you're
- 27:40creating something meaningful? Or would
- 27:44I conclude that you've spent the last month simply surviving,
- 27:48simply reacting, putting out fires?
- 27:51Responding to everyone else's priorities while quietly postponing your
- 27:55own calling. My friends, this is not something that
- 27:59should be shaming you or making you feel guilty or anything. This is just
- 28:03a hard truth. If you want to change your identity, your priorities
- 28:06have to match your new identity.
- 28:10And if we're being honest with ourselves, we have
- 28:13to realize that aligning our calendar with who we're becoming is the
- 28:18key. To changing our lives. Our past
- 28:21appointments may tell yesterday's stories, but they don't have to
- 28:25write tomorrow's. You can begin writing a different autobiography
- 28:29today, not by changing your entire life overnight,
- 28:32but by changing one appointment, by changing the direction.
- 28:36One hour, one priority tomorrow, one intentional decision next week.
- 28:41Because remember, your future is not built all at once.
- 28:44It's built by ordinary moments. It's built on
- 28:47Tuesday mornings at 8 AM or Wednesday afternoons at 2 PM,
- 28:52Saturday mornings before everyone else wakes up.
- 28:55Those ordinary moments become the extraordinary lives
- 28:59we desire to live. Every appointment you make is
- 29:03casting that vote for the identity you desire
- 29:07to live. So before you fill out next week's calendar, don't ask yourself
- 29:11what has to get done. Ask yourself,
- 29:14what kind of person am I becoming? And then decide
- 29:20that you're gonna align that creator with that person.
