- 0:05Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to the Overland General Podcast. I'm your
- 0:08Speaker 1: host Scott Brady, and I am here with my co
- 0:10Speaker 1: host Matt Sca. Hello, and we're going to talk about
- 0:14Speaker 1: some new trucks and new trucks, new bikes, bunch of stuff.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Because you were just in Anzebrego riding the twenty twenty
- 0:21Speaker 1: two to Katti Multi Strata. I think it is our
- 0:23Speaker 1: twenty twenty one one or the other. Yeah, it was
- 0:26Speaker 1: actually the first media launch that I've been on since Defender.
- 0:30Speaker 1: There's been a couple of them that they tried to
- 0:32Speaker 1: do and they kept getting canceled. So yeah, I did
- 0:34Speaker 1: the t Rex, which we'll talk about later. It was
- 0:36Speaker 1: kind of in the middle of one of those little
- 0:38Speaker 1: COVID lulls. And a special thanks to our sponsor for
- 0:41Speaker 1: today's episode, Off the Grid, Surplus. They recently sent Matt
- 0:45Speaker 1: and I a few pairs of their new Trailblazer Pro pants,
- 0:49Speaker 1: which I think are ideal for international travel, remote exploration,
- 0:53Speaker 1: and of course overlanding. Personally, I like the overall fit
- 0:57Speaker 1: of these pants. They are tailored well, they don't look
- 1:00Speaker 1: like you've got a tent wrapped around your waist, and
- 1:03Speaker 1: they have four way stretch as well. They have eight
- 1:05Speaker 1: pockets scattered around the waist and the upper thigh, and
- 1:10Speaker 1: they even have a mag pocket if you're feeling extra
- 1:12Speaker 1: tacticol some days, or you need a spot to store
- 1:16Speaker 1: a handheld radio or a multi toool. They are quick drawing,
- 1:18Speaker 1: which I think is really important for international travel. That
- 1:22Speaker 1: way you can wash them in the sink of the
- 1:24Speaker 1: hostel and have them dry by the next morning to
- 1:27Speaker 1: continue on with your journey. They are also very light
- 1:30Speaker 1: weight and water resistant, which I think is both an
- 1:32Speaker 1: advantage for mixed conditions and in fact, I think that
- 1:36Speaker 1: I've been wearing them so much that my other pants
- 1:38Speaker 1: are starting to get jealous. And if you'd like to
- 1:40Speaker 1: have your very own pair for the next thirty days,
- 1:42Speaker 1: they are offering a ten percent off program if you
- 1:45Speaker 1: use the code Overland Journal Thanks again off the Grid Surplus.
- 1:50Speaker 2: How big is the motor on that multi strata Well,
- 1:52Speaker 2: it's a twelve hundred so and it's also a totally
- 1:55Speaker 2: new motor for the multi strata four correct, so you
- 1:57Speaker 2: have the smoothness of a four cell under It doesn't
- 2:01Speaker 2: have kind of this angry torque of the V twin,
- 2:05Speaker 2: but I think it's a much better motorcycle. Overall, it's
- 2:08Speaker 2: the closest that I've seen from Ducati that's not a
- 2:11Speaker 2: sport bike with slightly taller tires. It actually feels completely
- 2:16Speaker 2: like an adventure bike. So there was a bunch that
- 2:19Speaker 2: I liked about it. Of course, the bikes are beautiful,
- 2:21Speaker 2: oh yeah.
- 2:21Speaker 1: And there's something about being able to purchase or ride
- 2:26Speaker 1: kind of a little bit outside of the norm adventure
- 2:29Speaker 1: bike that I think is very charming, you know, because
- 2:31Speaker 1: sometimes these adventure bike trips they can just look like
- 2:34Speaker 1: the long line of like a press event because they're
- 2:37Speaker 1: all the same bike.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Yeah, it's at twelve hundred gs with climb and a
- 2:41Speaker 2: shoe wirth, adventure exactly in a bunch of turret tech
- 2:43Speaker 2: gear on it, whichre's nothing wrong with any because it works.
- 2:46Speaker 2: It all works.
- 2:46Speaker 1: But it's interesting to see because the GS has always
- 2:50Speaker 1: been the target of all of these other manufacturers, the
- 2:54Speaker 1: other manufacturers are getting close, and we've seen that with
- 2:56Speaker 1: other brands, right, We've seen that with Toyota, where the
- 2:59Speaker 1: Toyota has always been the target and the other brands
- 3:02Speaker 1: are getting much closer, if not even eclipsing in certain areas.
- 3:05Speaker 1: So there's some of the things that I really liked
- 3:07Speaker 1: about the multi strata it is it's a rip on
- 3:11Speaker 1: the road.
- 3:11Speaker 2: I would imagine it was actually the nineteen inch front
- 3:14Speaker 2: on there is going to help with that quite a bit. Yeah,
- 3:16Speaker 2: And it was actually the fastest I've ever driven or
- 3:19Speaker 2: ridden anything in my life, and I will withhold the
- 3:24Speaker 2: actual number. You went upwards of three mile an hour
- 3:26Speaker 2: over the California state speed limit. I did.
- 3:29Speaker 1: That's right, Yeah, right within that range where they wouldn't
- 3:32Speaker 1: pull me over. But it was incredibly stable at high speed.
- 3:35Speaker 1: And then we actually did some real dirt with it,
- 3:37Speaker 1: and that was one of the interesting things. A lot
- 3:39Speaker 1: of these also ran adventure bikes in the past, they
- 3:42Speaker 1: were so street biased that they were pretty careful about
- 3:45Speaker 1: putting media on the dirt. This was a real backcountry route,
- 3:49Speaker 1: like a proper jeep road, with deep sand and decomposing
- 3:53Speaker 1: granted and steep climbs and ledges and opportunities even to
- 3:58Speaker 1: air the bike out. So there's some big water bars
- 4:00Speaker 1: that gave me a pretty good sense for how the
- 4:02Speaker 1: bike is off road. And one of the things that
- 4:04Speaker 1: I noticed that was most impressive was how well it
- 4:07Speaker 1: did in the sand. And there's a couple things that
- 4:09Speaker 1: I think contribute to that. The tires are really large.
- 4:13Speaker 1: In a really wide contact patch, you end up with
- 4:16Speaker 1: a much bigger tire, which helps with flotation. But then
- 4:19Speaker 1: the bike also weighs four hundred and seventy four pounds.
- 4:22Speaker 1: That's not really that bad these days, that's right, which
- 4:25Speaker 1: is in some cases one hundred pounds plus less than
- 4:28Speaker 1: an equivalent twelve hundred from other manufacturers. So it's a
- 4:31Speaker 1: much lighter bike. The wide tire they use a Pirelli
- 4:35Speaker 1: Scorpion Rally tire, which is kind of like a TKC
- 4:39Speaker 1: eighty but a little bit more effective on the road,
- 4:43Speaker 1: a little bit more structure between the lugs. So I
- 4:45Speaker 1: actually found on the highway and on the twists, even
- 4:48Speaker 1: at speed, it gave a lot of confidence. But then
- 4:51Speaker 1: off road it did great, did really well in the sand.
- 4:53Speaker 1: As a counter rotating crank shaft, so the crank shaft
- 4:56Speaker 1: is running at the opposite direction of the wheels, which
- 5:00Speaker 1: makes a huge difference in how stable the bike feels overall.
- 5:04Speaker 1: That's fascinating, yeah, and it really made a difference. The
- 5:06Speaker 1: other thing that I liked about it is it's a
- 5:09Speaker 1: very centered weight. Overall weight mass on like a BMW
- 5:13Speaker 1: for example, you can really feel that forward weighted chassis.
- 5:16Speaker 1: So anytime you even lift throttle in the sands, get
- 5:20Speaker 1: a lot more interesting.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Handle bars go, yes, handle barstar going directions. You know
- 5:24Speaker 1: you don't want them to go. But I actually really
- 5:27Speaker 1: I liked it. It's it is. Let's talk about the
- 5:29Speaker 1: things that I loved about it. So the motor is fantastic,
- 5:32Speaker 1: one hundred and seventy horse power, easy to love.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Basically, what is a Ducati superbike modor it.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Is it's the Pentagale before before, so it's it's this
- 5:40Speaker 1: and it's been tuned for adventure, so it's it's got
- 5:43Speaker 1: a lower first gear, it's got a slightly different power band,
- 5:46Speaker 1: a little bit more torque. It's got a more relaxed
- 5:49Speaker 1: six gear for you.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Know, cruising on the highway.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Yeah, And speaking of cruising on the highway, one of
- 5:54Speaker 1: the things that I really liked is it has the
- 5:56Speaker 1: first bike I've ever ridden with radar cruise control. Actually
- 6:00Speaker 1: very interesting how it works. So you set the distance
- 6:03Speaker 1: and you set it to follow along, and we were
- 6:05Speaker 1: just it was even working with other bikes so small,
- 6:08Speaker 1: you know, footprint as far as an Eco go or
- 6:11Speaker 1: an echo goes small, small footprint to see for those radars.
- 6:15Speaker 1: But it was working and all you have to do
- 6:17Speaker 1: is just turn on the turn signal and lean a
- 6:19Speaker 1: little bit and it starts to accelerate around automatically.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Oh that's nice.
- 6:23Speaker 1: And even coming up to a turn, or if everybody's
- 6:26Speaker 1: pulling off the bike starts to slow down, it'll even
- 6:28Speaker 1: break to do that. And then it also has rear radar,
- 6:31Speaker 1: so if another bike is coming up on you quick
- 6:34Speaker 1: and you don't see it in your mirror, or you're
- 6:35Speaker 1: in some developing country and you know, here comes a
- 6:38Speaker 1: local on a one twenty five trying to pass you
- 6:40Speaker 1: in a corner or whatever. Yeah, you actually get on
- 6:42Speaker 1: the mirrors I guess would be a blind spot dintection
- 6:45Speaker 1: monitoring it. Yeah, so it lights up that you do
- 6:48Speaker 1: you think.
- 6:48Speaker 2: That that those technologies add to the experience, Like do
- 6:51Speaker 2: they do they add convenience to riding for you or
- 6:54Speaker 2: do they kind of take it away? Because I feel
- 6:56Speaker 2: like moto people are of one of two camps, like Abs'
- 6:59Speaker 2: is sacral. It's just some people, you know, not even
- 7:01Speaker 2: a throttle lock is acceptable in some people. Yeah, you know,
- 7:05Speaker 2: it's just interesting to see these bikes coming more and
- 7:08Speaker 2: more gold wing.
- 7:09Speaker 1: I guess I think everybody's right in that regard, and
- 7:12Speaker 1: that's I'm not trying to just chintz out on the answer.
- 7:15Speaker 1: I think that there are places where you want a KLR,
- 7:19Speaker 1: or there's places that you want to really lightweight, extremely
- 7:22Speaker 1: simple bike. What I do find is even more so
- 7:26Speaker 1: in the developing world. There are times that the mass
- 7:30Speaker 1: and the safety that comes from an adventure bike is
- 7:32Speaker 1: actually a real advantage. For example, when all of the
- 7:35Speaker 1: locals are riding a one to twenty five or a
- 7:38Speaker 1: smaller overall footprint motorcycle, if you're riding something of a
- 7:42Speaker 1: similar size, all the local truck drivers, all the locals
- 7:45Speaker 1: and cars, they just see you as another local. They
- 7:48Speaker 1: don't even notice that you're something different, so they tend
- 7:50Speaker 1: to really crowd you on the road. They don't give
- 7:52Speaker 1: you a lot of space. I notice that in smaller
- 7:54Speaker 1: bikes in the developing world, you're kind of at the
- 7:57Speaker 1: same risk as the other locals. Whereas one you hop
- 8:00Speaker 1: on a large displacement. If you're a big human on
- 8:03Speaker 1: a big motorcycle, you stand out. And that's something that
- 8:06Speaker 1: I like, So it's a better visual impression to everybody
- 8:09Speaker 1: on the road, like, hey, this is something different. Maybe
- 8:11Speaker 1: they give you a little bit of room, and then
- 8:13Speaker 1: you've you've found it. Like when you're in Asia and
- 8:15Speaker 1: you're on a scooter and you're trying to pass the
- 8:18Speaker 1: chicken bus, right, I mean, the fact that you can
- 8:20Speaker 1: breathe one hundred and seventy horsepower and be around them
- 8:23Speaker 1: faster than you can blink.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Just about fifty ccs doesn't necessarily work when you're six
- 8:28Speaker 2: foot three exactly. So I can attest to the fact
- 8:32Speaker 2: that small bike in big person is not the same
- 8:35Speaker 2: as big bike big person. Yeah.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Interesting, Yeah, So I think that that's a real advantage.
- 8:39Speaker 1: I like the safety that comes from all of that technology.
- 8:42Speaker 2: When I was riding through Peru and Ecuador and.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Colombia on the twelve hundred gs, the fact that I
- 8:49Speaker 1: had such effective abs, lots of rain, lots of really
- 8:53Speaker 1: oil on the road, all of that stuff loose conditions
- 8:56Speaker 1: that really make a big difference. But again, that's not
- 8:59Speaker 1: to say that you shouldn't go around the world in
- 9:01Speaker 1: a simple, small displacement bike. In many ways, I think
- 9:04Speaker 1: that's probably better because if you think about it, for
- 9:06Speaker 1: the price of a new multi strata at twenty four
- 9:09Speaker 1: thousand dollars, you could buy a KLR and go around
- 9:12Speaker 1: the world for just the same price. All of that
- 9:14Speaker 1: should be taken into consideration, and arguably the person on
- 9:18Speaker 1: the KLR, they're a little less stressed. They don't have
- 9:21Speaker 1: as fancy of a bike. If it gets stolen somewhere,
- 9:24Speaker 1: you're only out five grand. If it falls over, yeah
- 9:26Speaker 1: you dust it already notices the difference. Yeah, whereas an expensive,
- 9:31Speaker 1: complex adventure bike that falls over could result in a problem.
- 9:35Speaker 1: I mean I did have that happen in Colombia. I
- 9:38Speaker 1: went down on a twelve hundred GS and my boot
- 9:42Speaker 1: hit the pentamometer, which is a very small sensor. It
- 9:45Speaker 1: hit it broke it, and I was down. There was
- 9:47Speaker 1: just down for the count, totally down for the count.
- 9:49Speaker 1: So they had to go back to Bogatah, get apart,
- 9:52Speaker 1: bring it back to me as I'm sitting in the
- 9:53Speaker 1: middle of the jungle. So again, with everything, there's a compromise.
- 9:56Speaker 1: I think it's not good to dismiss a large bike
- 9:59Speaker 1: for travel out of hand, because there's a bunch of
- 10:01Speaker 1: advantage that comes with it.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I can see that. So here's my test that
- 10:04Speaker 2: I use for all adventure bikes. Is it better in
- 10:06Speaker 2: a KTM nine fifty or nine to ninety adventure? Does
- 10:10Speaker 2: it have more travel, does it have more power to wait?
- 10:12Speaker 2: And is it better off road? Yeah?
- 10:14Speaker 1: No, to all of those. It might have better power
- 10:17Speaker 1: to wait. Yeah, it probably would. I think it does.
- 10:19Speaker 1: In fact, I say four seventy five, it most certainly would.
- 10:23Speaker 1: My nine to fifty is low four hundreds because I've
- 10:25Speaker 1: taken all of the things off of it, but it's
- 10:27Speaker 1: only under a hundred horse power.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:29Speaker 1: But again, I've even thought about that because it used
- 10:33Speaker 1: to be that that was such a valid comparison because
- 10:35Speaker 1: the adventure bikes weren't all that much better. But now
- 10:38Speaker 1: that you've got so much better technology, high readability on
- 10:42Speaker 1: the screen, lots of wind protection, lots of reserve capacity,
- 10:46Speaker 1: and performance, and they keep getting better and better off road,
- 10:49Speaker 1: I think that that margin is dwindling a little bit.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's something that I definitely needed to take
- 10:54Speaker 2: into consideration. Like a lot has changed.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Yeah, So, and that's what's exciting. It's exciting to see
- 11:00Speaker 1: manufacturers now bringing to market true GS fighters that really
- 11:06Speaker 1: make people start to think, do I want this beautiful
- 11:08Speaker 1: red motorcycle instead of something else.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Yeah, And I mean, I think the interesting thing with
- 11:13Speaker 2: du Kani is I want to say they did that
- 11:15Speaker 2: multi strata in Duro that had the twenty one inch
- 11:17Speaker 2: front had some more off road futures. So I wonder
- 11:21Speaker 2: we'll see we'll see something it's even more adventury. I
- 11:24Speaker 2: think it's coming.
- 11:25Speaker 1: I actually what I would love to see would be
- 11:28Speaker 1: there nine to fifty with that full kind of off
- 11:31Speaker 1: road and dua package. One thing just for the listener,
- 11:35Speaker 1: because we don't want to just talk about the positives.
- 11:37Speaker 1: There was a couple little items that I did notice.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Their traction control algorithm was not suitable for off roads.
- 11:44Speaker 1: So even if you were in the least invasive selection
- 11:47Speaker 1: for traction control, way too much intervention, so it would
- 11:51Speaker 1: actually result in a failed hill climb fairly easily if
- 11:54Speaker 1: you weren't careful. So I had to go full traction
- 11:56Speaker 1: control off. So hopefully Dukati addresses that they have a
- 11:59Speaker 1: one to ten, and you know that one that they
- 12:01Speaker 1: have now needs to be about their five and one
- 12:03Speaker 1: needs to allow for a lot of wheel spin because
- 12:06Speaker 1: when you're riding off road and you trash control has
- 12:08Speaker 1: a ton of advantages because you can't overspin the rear tire,
- 12:11Speaker 1: but the fact that it just shuts you down so
- 12:14Speaker 1: quickly it's a problem.
- 12:15Speaker 2: I have no idea about offer a trash control motorcycles.
- 12:19Speaker 2: My main ride is a trials bike. Yeah, it does
- 12:21Speaker 2: not have a seat, but I mean no radar, no radar,
- 12:26Speaker 2: crew is control, no seat, no electric start.
- 12:29Speaker 1: I don't know what a great place to learn. I
- 12:32Speaker 1: like it. Yeah, those are sweet. I need to get
- 12:34Speaker 1: out there with you on one of those. Yeah, I mean,
- 12:36Speaker 1: I mean so so if you were to give it
- 12:38Speaker 1: a rating out of ten, it's definitely the best multi
- 12:41Speaker 1: strata that they brought into market. The refinement is so
- 12:44Speaker 1: much more improved, the quality of everything, even the service interval.
- 12:47Speaker 1: It's thirty six thousand miles on the valve could right
- 12:50Speaker 1: around the world. Yeah, so you could go around the
- 12:53Speaker 1: world without a valve adjustment. So that's a big deal.
- 12:56Speaker 1: I would say it's probably seven and a half eight
- 12:59Speaker 1: out of ten. It's really it's really a big improvement.
- 13:03Speaker 1: And I can't think of a single adventure bike that's
- 13:05Speaker 1: a ten out of ten.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I mean of everything that you've written, because
- 13:09Speaker 2: you've written quite a pretty much all of these new bikes, right,
- 13:12Speaker 2: what do you think it most closely competes with? I mean,
- 13:15Speaker 2: is it something that could unseat the twelve hundred gs?
- 13:19Speaker 1: You know, motorcycles are so tribal that people that buy
- 13:23Speaker 1: GSS tend to buy more GSS. So that's the thing
- 13:26Speaker 1: that's difficult to is for people to actually change brands.
- 13:29Speaker 1: That doesn't happen very often. But I would say that
- 13:32Speaker 1: if you look at off road performance, it's as good
- 13:35Speaker 1: as the standard twelve to fifty, it's not as good
- 13:38Speaker 1: as the Adventure. The Adventure has a little bit more
- 13:39Speaker 1: will travel and it has much better attraction control in
- 13:42Speaker 1: ABS systems. So I would say it's it probably is
- 13:45Speaker 1: closest to the gs. Ktms will be that much better
- 13:49Speaker 1: off road. So if you were to look at a
- 13:50Speaker 1: ten ninety or an eleven ninety or a twelve ninety,
- 13:53Speaker 1: those bikes are so much more suited for the dirt
- 13:56Speaker 1: and they're set up for that. Yeah, that's fascinating, and
- 13:59Speaker 1: it's it's beautiful, and it's beautiful, and it's orange and
- 14:02Speaker 1: it's Italian and it just stirs your soul and really
- 14:05Speaker 1: it really does. I mean it, it was absolutely insane
- 14:09Speaker 1: to ride on the road.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Yeah, way faster than I should have been riding. Well
- 14:13Speaker 2: that's what they're for, that's why you have seventy of
- 14:16Speaker 2: the horse powers exactly. Well, I was driving the t
- 14:19Speaker 2: Rex a few months ago, and like I always feel
- 14:22Speaker 2: like I have to preface this car because every time
- 14:25Speaker 2: I say, oh, well, you know I was reviewing this vehicle,
- 14:27Speaker 2: well that's not an Overlin vehicle. Well, it's cheaper pretty
- 14:30Speaker 2: much than you know, starting price seventy one thousand dollars.
- 14:33Speaker 2: People are spending that all day long. Like, look around.
- 14:36Speaker 2: The dude that's doing your tile has a pickup truck
- 14:38Speaker 2: that's more expensive than that. Sure, so I think, like
- 14:41Speaker 2: value for money, Well it's a hoot. I mean that
- 14:43Speaker 2: thing does zero to sixty they claim four point five.
- 14:46Speaker 2: I thought it was a little bit faster than that.
- 14:48Speaker 2: You know, some people have actually like done like actual
- 14:50Speaker 2: testing as low as three point seven seconds in a
- 14:53Speaker 2: pickup truck. But I don't know. I mean I think
- 14:55Speaker 2: the thing is that seven hundred and two horsepower sounds
- 14:58Speaker 2: absolutely crazy. Right now, it's going to be slower than
- 15:01Speaker 2: the cyber truck, it's going to be slower than the
- 15:02Speaker 2: riving and it's going to be slower than the Hummer
- 15:04Speaker 2: EV that's coming out. This is our first it's our
- 15:07Speaker 2: first opportunity to see what this much you know, usable
- 15:10Speaker 2: power is going to be like in a half ton
- 15:13Speaker 2: platform because so much stuff is going I mean power.
- 15:16Speaker 1: We have won the power game, you know. Yeah, yeah,
- 15:19Speaker 1: it doesn't it doesn't it seem that. I guess my
- 15:22Speaker 1: first point would be, there's nothing wrong with just having
- 15:24Speaker 1: more fun ye traveling.
- 15:26Speaker 2: It's really fun, and it's really great inside. You know,
- 15:30Speaker 2: thirteen hundred and ten pounds of payloads, so I want
- 15:33Speaker 2: to say that's like one hundred or one hundred and
- 15:34Speaker 2: twenty pounds more than a forid Raptor. But where I
- 15:37Speaker 2: will qualify that is you get the Panameranomic Center, if
- 15:41Speaker 2: you get the cool seats, you step up into the
- 15:44Speaker 2: higher tiered spec packages, and you it seems to me
- 15:47Speaker 2: that you end up pretty much at the same place
- 15:50Speaker 2: as the Raptor. Sure, I do prefer the way that
- 15:53Speaker 2: the t Rex drives. Having owned a Raptor, I wouldn't
- 15:56Speaker 2: I wouldn't get a Raptor. What did you like more
- 15:58Speaker 2: about the t Rex? Felt more solid? You know that
- 16:02Speaker 2: the Raptor was a phenomenal vehicle. It was fun. It's still,
- 16:05Speaker 2: in my opinion, one of the best grand touring cars
- 16:07Speaker 2: money could buy. It goes down the highway at whatever
- 16:10Speaker 2: speed you want with four people passed out in it,
- 16:13Speaker 2: and it just doesn't really care. But the t Rex
- 16:15Speaker 2: was has a nicer interior. I think the exterior styling
- 16:19Speaker 2: details are they're just nicer. The interior is a beautiful
- 16:23Speaker 2: place to be. I mean it is really quiet. You
- 16:25Speaker 2: get dual pain glass on the windshield and the side windows, which, yeah,
- 16:29Speaker 2: that laminated glass really is. It's interesting because you used
- 16:33Speaker 2: to see that stuff in Rolls, Royce Bentley s class Mercedes.
- 16:36Speaker 2: But now that technology is starting to dwindle down, and
- 16:38Speaker 2: I think that that's the fascinating thing with the TRX
- 16:41Speaker 2: is you're going to start to see those those technologies
- 16:43Speaker 2: dwindle down. I thought the suspension, frankly was better for
- 16:46Speaker 2: road use. I thought it was better for you know,
- 16:49Speaker 2: kind of rugged off road use. I thought that the
- 16:52Speaker 2: raptor was always a bit jarring and you know kind
- 16:55Speaker 2: of I call them like the baby head rocks, and
- 16:58Speaker 2: so it was more busy. It was a little bit
- 17:00Speaker 2: more busy, but you know that that's a five link
- 17:02Speaker 2: coil sprung rear end versus leaf springs. But it does,
- 17:06Speaker 2: you know, go to say that now Ford has up
- 17:08Speaker 2: the ante with the raptor and they have a you know,
- 17:10Speaker 2: a five link coil sprung rearend in that too. I think.
- 17:13Speaker 2: I think again you're talking about tribalism. This is something
- 17:16Speaker 2: for the Ram tribe. I personally think if you blindfolded
- 17:20Speaker 2: people and drove them back to back and had them
- 17:22Speaker 2: touch the interior and had them actually drive it, I
- 17:25Speaker 2: think most people would would prefer the Ram Ford forward.
- 17:28Speaker 2: To me, I don't know. Well, let me say this
- 17:30Speaker 2: Ram feels more premium to me. Everything you touch, everything
- 17:32Speaker 2: you feel, It's just there's designers going through it, where
- 17:36Speaker 2: Ford to me feels like engineers and accountants have gone
- 17:39Speaker 2: through it. Sure, you open the door handle on a
- 17:42Speaker 2: Ford product and there's like a little seam seal from
- 17:45Speaker 2: from the injection molding. They feel a little bit more
- 17:47Speaker 2: tiny compared to the to the RAM. And I have
- 17:49Speaker 2: a Ford product too. I'm not brand biased necessarily. You know,
- 17:53Speaker 2: people always compare them, obviously, but the t Rex is
- 17:56Speaker 2: more of a system. I think is kind of the
- 17:58Speaker 2: way Scott Brown described it to me. FCA or Stilantis.
- 18:01Speaker 2: I just don't want to call it Stilantis. I feel
- 18:03Speaker 2: like it's like a the Lost City, like an Atlantic City,
- 18:07Speaker 2: discount casino or something terrible name. I think if you're
- 18:11Speaker 2: going to go down to Baja and you know, beat
- 18:12Speaker 2: up a truck, maybe take a Raptor because it just
- 18:15Speaker 2: seems like the aftermarket will have more potential with that vehicle.
- 18:19Speaker 2: I don't know if you could put thirty sevens on
- 18:20Speaker 2: a t Rex, sure it would probably ruin it. You know,
- 18:23Speaker 2: some more supercar super trucky in that aspect, But it's
- 18:26Speaker 2: just so fun to drive. And I think the thing
- 18:28Speaker 2: that really makes it is that Bill Steins suspension. People
- 18:32Speaker 2: are all of a sudden really concerned with that diameter
- 18:34Speaker 2: of their shocks, so it doesn't have like the three
- 18:36Speaker 2: inch diameter shocks that the Raptor has, or the twelve
- 18:39Speaker 2: inch diameter shocks that I'm sure that people are putting
- 18:41Speaker 2: on their trucks to go down the Mohami Road these days.
- 18:43Speaker 2: But they adjust so quickly and they're actually you know,
- 18:46Speaker 2: I want to say it's one thousand pounds of dampening
- 18:49Speaker 2: force or more that they can actually apply within milliseconds,
- 18:53Speaker 2: so you know they have this like jump detection thing,
- 18:57Speaker 2: which they were a little bit cagy about calling it
- 19:00Speaker 2: with lawyers around, but sure, you know, this was an
- 19:02Speaker 2: interesting vehicle because they put us out on the short
- 19:05Speaker 2: course at Wildhorse Motorsports Park outside of Reno. Have at
- 19:09Speaker 2: it like there's somebody in the right seat kind of
- 19:10Speaker 2: telling you what to do, but they were making sure
- 19:12Speaker 2: you weren't. I mean, this is a truck that could
- 19:14Speaker 2: do one hundred and twenty mile an hour on the
- 19:15Speaker 2: front straight if you want it to. You don't want
- 19:17Speaker 2: to hit two foot woops doing that. But I was
- 19:20Speaker 2: impressed with how quickly the suspension could could change. I mean,
- 19:23Speaker 2: you know, they're factoring in steering angle, they're factoring in
- 19:26Speaker 2: wheel speed vertically. Sure you know there's a lot going
- 19:30Speaker 2: onto the system and to be able. It was just
- 19:33Speaker 2: so composed, like you know, you kind of get off
- 19:35Speaker 2: a jump and what felt to me like I was,
- 19:37Speaker 2: you know, Napoleon dynamite, like twelve feet in the air.
- 19:40Speaker 2: I was probably like six inches of something like desert
- 19:43Speaker 2: races are probably looking like you call that are It was.
- 19:46Speaker 2: It was interesting just to see how quickly the system
- 19:49Speaker 2: that is that suspension worked. It was fascinating, and you
- 19:53Speaker 2: know we're going to start seeing that stuff. Those are
- 19:55Speaker 2: drop in technologies, sure, and what that tells me to
- 19:57Speaker 2: see that from FCA or Stintlanta, It's not going to
- 20:00Speaker 2: be long until we see that on a Gladiator, or
- 20:03Speaker 2: on a twenty five hundred or on a wrangler. And
- 20:06Speaker 2: I'm really really excited for that because I really do
- 20:08Speaker 2: think that that adaptive suspension, particularly at an OE level,
- 20:12Speaker 2: that's one of the technologies that I walked away from
- 20:14Speaker 2: the TRX saying that's going to be yeah, interesting. That
- 20:17Speaker 2: is the next game changer to be able to let's say,
- 20:20Speaker 2: you know, you have a Roofti on your jeep and
- 20:23Speaker 2: the vehicles leaning into turns, Well, it's going to actually
- 20:26Speaker 2: know what's going on, and it has those you know.
- 20:28Speaker 2: I mean, I know that the Gladiator, for example, already
- 20:31Speaker 2: has the little suspension height sensors ready to go, because
- 20:34Speaker 2: I think they share a component with the fifteen hundred.
- 20:36Speaker 2: But this will just be interesting to see what that
- 20:40Speaker 2: active suspension and where that will go. Yeah, that makes
- 20:43Speaker 2: a lot of sense.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Just a few weeks ago, I was testing out the
- 20:46Speaker 1: SDI suspension.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Which looks super fascinating.
- 20:50Speaker 1: E click and it worked exactly as you described, so
- 20:53Speaker 1: you can you can dial in the increased payload. It
- 20:56Speaker 1: has an IMU on it. It knows when the vehicle
- 20:59Speaker 1: is light, is light because it's come off of a
- 21:02Speaker 1: g out or maybe even a jump. It knows when
- 21:05Speaker 1: it's got a heavy roofload, and it starts to adjust
- 21:08Speaker 1: automatically for that. And I think that that's coming and
- 21:10Speaker 1: it does make a big difference in safety.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Yeah, because I mean, right now, I feel like you know,
- 21:14Speaker 2: suspension tuning is an art, but to a degree that
- 21:17Speaker 2: shim stack that you're putting together and how it's valved,
- 21:22Speaker 2: it is to some degree estimating, right right you're trying
- 21:25Speaker 2: to get one solution that works for a variety of solutions.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Where now you have if your range is one to ten,
- 21:32Speaker 2: you're picking the five. Now you have the ability with
- 21:35Speaker 2: these new technologies to have a one and then milliseconds
- 21:38Speaker 2: later have a ten, And that is really really fascinating.
- 21:42Speaker 2: I know that there's active suspension on I want to
- 21:44Speaker 2: say on the nineteen and up raptors, but that's more
- 21:47Speaker 2: of a definitive valving change. I felt that this was
- 21:50Speaker 2: more active.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Yeah, it was interesting that multi strata as an example,
- 21:54Speaker 1: had the same thing and the bike knew when you
- 21:56Speaker 1: were in the air it would go like it only
- 21:58Speaker 1: has seven point win inches of sun travel in the front,
- 22:01Speaker 1: so we go full stiff.
- 22:02Speaker 2: It soaked up some pretty good jumps for very little while.
- 22:05Speaker 2: But the point there being is, you know, maybe as
- 22:08Speaker 2: with the multi strata where I was kind of comparing,
- 22:11Speaker 2: is it better than the nine to fifty, Well, the
- 22:12Speaker 2: nine to fifty has to has to deal with choosing
- 22:14Speaker 2: number five out of a one to ten scale, right,
- 22:17Speaker 2: Having something that's smart enough to be able to dynamically adjust,
- 22:21Speaker 2: that's pretty cool.
- 22:22Speaker 1: It is, and it lets you get away with, in
- 22:25Speaker 1: my mind, a little bit less suspension travel because it's
- 22:28Speaker 1: so adaptive.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Yeah, the technologies are really interesting and I think I
- 22:32Speaker 1: think it's easy and myself, I mean, just to admit freely,
- 22:36Speaker 1: I remember looking at the Raptor initially with a little
- 22:40Speaker 1: bit of, like even honestly disdain because I'm thinking people
- 22:44Speaker 1: shouldn't be out driving that fast on these public roads
- 22:47Speaker 1: and all of that. And the reality is is even
- 22:50Speaker 1: if you drove at the same speed, you're going to
- 22:52Speaker 1: be more fresh, You're going to have more in the tank.
- 22:55Speaker 1: If something happens like a deer juts out in the road,
- 22:58Speaker 1: you're going to have more capability and performance. I mean,
- 23:00Speaker 1: it's the individual owner. It's there responsible to be. It's
- 23:04Speaker 1: their responsibility to be responsible over landers and not tear
- 23:07Speaker 1: up the back country. But it is kind of interesting
- 23:10Speaker 1: that you can have that much performance and if you
- 23:12Speaker 1: pack light, it can actually be a lot of fun.
- 23:14Speaker 2: You know. I I loved my Raptor, you know, I
- 23:17Speaker 2: saw that because the Gladiator came out and I that
- 23:19Speaker 2: was just like boys dream. You know. It was a
- 23:20Speaker 2: Jeep Wrangler pickup truck right exactly. I wanted it. But
- 23:24Speaker 2: you know, we had a swag that we threw in
- 23:25Speaker 2: the back. In the later you know period of that truck.
- 23:28Speaker 2: I had to go fast camper on it, and that
- 23:29Speaker 2: was a really good fit because it was pretty light.
- 23:31Speaker 2: It allowed us to sleep in there with the dog.
- 23:34Speaker 2: It was a little bit more comfortable, and I think
- 23:36Speaker 2: it weighed three hundred and something pounds, so it was
- 23:38Speaker 2: two adults, camping gear and all that stuff. It was
- 23:41Speaker 2: completely within the realm of that. And you know that
- 23:43Speaker 2: the interesting thing I think when you get into any
- 23:46Speaker 2: kind of performance vehicles, there are a plethora of spring
- 23:49Speaker 2: options out there. So if you want to get a
- 23:51Speaker 2: diver that is designed to carry five hundred pounds more payload, well,
- 23:55Speaker 2: you know that the you know, the frame of the
- 23:57Speaker 2: F one fifty. While the Raptor has maybe a thousand
- 23:59Speaker 2: pounds payload as generally outfitted, that same vehicle is capable
- 24:03Speaker 2: of three thousand pounds payload. Yeah, I've seen close to
- 24:06Speaker 2: three thousand. So a lot of it, in my opinion,
- 24:08Speaker 2: was down to spring rates. Obviously, when you're going fast,
- 24:10Speaker 2: you don't want a crazy heavy spring rate, but if
- 24:12Speaker 2: you have a spring rate that's commensurate to the amount
- 24:14Speaker 2: of weight that you have in There is actually a
- 24:16Speaker 2: dude lawn dart design on Instagram that has built a
- 24:19Speaker 2: like really interesting raptor on thirty sevens is a little
- 24:23Speaker 2: bit more power. He goes down to Baja all the time,
- 24:25Speaker 2: and you know he's he's actually looked at it as
- 24:27Speaker 2: a as a complete package. You know, it has the spares,
- 24:31Speaker 2: it has all the overlanding stuff, it has a fridge,
- 24:33Speaker 2: it has everything, but it's kind of within that payload
- 24:35Speaker 2: and it rips. Man. That's clever. Yeah, they're just fun, right,
- 24:40Speaker 2: I mean, I think the cool thing of where overlanding's gone.
- 24:43Speaker 2: In my opinion, when you say the term overlanding to somebody,
- 24:46Speaker 2: they now just think car with roof ten. It doesn't
- 24:48Speaker 2: evoke global traveler, or it doesn't evoke international travel as
- 24:52Speaker 2: much as it's maybe a point of frustration for me.
- 24:55Speaker 2: That's gone. So why not why not have an embrace
- 24:58Speaker 2: any variant? Right? Yeah, I don't know. It's fascinating to me. Well,
- 25:01Speaker 2: and if it gets people.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Outdoors and they're able to spend time with their family
- 25:05Speaker 1: and go have an experience, then there's certainly no harm
- 25:08Speaker 1: in it.
- 25:08Speaker 2: And I think where this leads with the trx and
- 25:11Speaker 2: with the F one fifty raptor Is, these are like
- 25:13Speaker 2: the half ton American pickup truck for whatever reason, just
- 25:17Speaker 2: has never really been embraced. You know, if you look,
- 25:19Speaker 2: if you look abroad and all the people that like
- 25:22Speaker 2: the seventy series and drive the seventy series there, they're
- 25:25Speaker 2: probably looking at F one fifties and Raptors and trx
- 25:27Speaker 2: Is and the things that we get here for you know,
- 25:29Speaker 2: relatively little amounts of money. I mean, a seventy series
- 25:33Speaker 2: in Australia costs more, you know, with roll up windows
- 25:36Speaker 2: and a you know, I don't even know if they
- 25:37Speaker 2: have a center console. They cost more than a loaded
- 25:40Speaker 2: Raptor does. Yeah, they're expensive, so you know, value for money.
- 25:43Speaker 2: I mean, that's a That's an entirely different podcast. Is
- 25:46Speaker 2: why isn't the American half ton pickup truck the choice
- 25:49Speaker 2: of Overlanders. It's you know, I had an engine blow
- 25:52Speaker 2: in my earth rummer. Well maybe maybe that's why it's
- 25:55Speaker 2: not the choice of Overlanders. But I had an engine
- 25:58Speaker 2: blow in that, and you know, there's reassuring thing after
- 26:01Speaker 2: we got it repaired, as if we had an issue.
- 26:04Speaker 2: There is a Ford dealer like hiding around every corner. Sure,
- 26:07Speaker 2: I mean, it's just it's just there. You know. We
- 26:10Speaker 2: actually kind of went and made made a map of
- 26:12Speaker 2: all the Ford dealers for our Alaska Yukon trip this year,
- 26:15Speaker 2: and they're everywhere. I mean, like these tiny towns, there's
- 26:18Speaker 2: a Ford dealer, there's a Chevy dealer, there's a Ram dealer.
- 26:21Speaker 2: You might not find a Toyota dealer. You're certainly not
- 26:24Speaker 2: finding a place to serve as your sprinter. I don't know.
- 26:27Speaker 2: It's interesting.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Well, and you've also talked about that this is kind
- 26:30Speaker 1: of the swan song of the internal combustion engine.
- 26:34Speaker 2: That was your quote.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Actually, and maybe that's part of it, is we get
- 26:38Speaker 1: that three ninety two Wrangler, we get you know, we
- 26:41Speaker 1: get these seven hundred horsepower rams.
- 26:44Speaker 2: That might be it.
- 26:45Speaker 1: That might be that we're looking for the next decade,
- 26:47Speaker 1: as electric vehicles become more and more relevant and in
- 26:51Speaker 1: many cases a better choice, that we'll see these really
- 26:55Speaker 1: kind of high strung, very fun internal combustion vehicles.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's I know, and I think that that
- 27:01Speaker 2: applies then to the evs in the future as well.
- 27:04Speaker 2: Most cars are going to have this power. Yeah. So
- 27:06Speaker 2: you know, as we were talking, like I when the
- 27:09Speaker 2: Uick Grand National came out, I'm sure people were like,
- 27:11Speaker 2: cars can't get any faster? What No, And then like
- 27:15Speaker 2: a Honda Odyssey is faster than it. Now, that's just
- 27:18Speaker 2: technology and progression. So so it's interesting to see the
- 27:21Speaker 2: t Rex. I really look at it. It's a wonderful car.
- 27:23Speaker 2: It's really well made. It's like super quiet inside aside
- 27:27Speaker 2: from the supercharger wine, which is exactly how it should be.
- 27:30Speaker 2: You want, it's exactly what you want. But yeah, it's
- 27:33Speaker 2: it's a it's interesting to me. It was almost a
- 27:36Speaker 2: technology demonstrator of like, here's the stuff that's going to
- 27:39Speaker 2: come to everything else. And now we're starting to see
- 27:41Speaker 2: the three ninety two Wrangler. Yeah, exciting. Our buddy Mike
- 27:44Speaker 2: mcmaud already has one on order, has one on order.
- 27:47Speaker 2: So I can't wait to respectfully drive it and not
- 27:50Speaker 2: do a burnout. Yeah, I think it'll be tough week.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Yeah, So let's go to the complete opposite end of
- 27:56Speaker 1: the spectrum. Let's go to the Royal Infield six feet interceptor.
- 28:01Speaker 2: Okay, the complete opposite end of both spectrums it is.
- 28:05Speaker 2: That's forty seven horsepower. Oh forty seven Yeah, that's a
- 28:09Speaker 2: huge improvement. Yeah.
- 28:11Speaker 1: So and a it's a six fifty, so it's a
- 28:13Speaker 1: bigger Royal endfield. The reason why I want to talk
- 28:16Speaker 1: about this bike on this podcast again is to contrast
- 28:20Speaker 1: the multi strata and maybe some of these other things
- 28:22Speaker 1: that we're discussing. Something like a Royal endfield and get
- 28:25Speaker 1: serviced many places in the world. They make squillions of
- 28:29Speaker 1: them in Asia, particularly in India.
- 28:32Speaker 2: They're very charming. It's got this old fun. Yeah. They're
- 28:36Speaker 2: one of those things that it's classless, like they're just
- 28:39Speaker 2: anybody can ride one. They're just they're a happy motorcycle.
- 28:42Speaker 2: Like you see a Royal Endfield and you're never like,
- 28:44Speaker 2: you don't look they look classy. I think they look
- 28:47Speaker 2: I think Royal Endfields have always been a I think
- 28:50Speaker 2: they have good design, right they.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Do because they haven't changed it. I think that was
- 28:54Speaker 1: the smart thing is don't try to update it, just
- 28:56Speaker 1: keep making them look exactly the same, which makes them
- 29:00Speaker 1: more charming into the future. And one of the things
- 29:03Speaker 1: that I really like about you're talking about spending less
- 29:05Speaker 1: than six thousand dollars on a brand new motorcycle with
- 29:08Speaker 1: abs fuel injection, you know, forty seven horsepower, you know,
- 29:12Speaker 1: and it's relatively comfortable to ride. It's got enough power
- 29:16Speaker 1: that you can actually go on interstate speeds. But the
- 29:19Speaker 1: thing that came to my mind is, you know, you
- 29:21Speaker 1: could throw a couple bags on the thing and you
- 29:23Speaker 1: could take off down to the middle of mainland Mexico
- 29:27Speaker 1: and you could have a very inexpensive trip, a.
- 29:30Speaker 2: Unique trip too.
- 29:31Speaker 1: You know.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Like what fascinates me about that motorcycle is, you know,
- 29:34Speaker 2: with when we were talking about the multi strata, we
- 29:36Speaker 2: use the KLR as an example. That's always the go
- 29:39Speaker 2: to It's a coma of the adventure motorcycle space. Absolutely,
- 29:44Speaker 2: but there are options, there are other options, and it's cool.
- 29:47Speaker 2: I think with motorcycles we get more of those. It's
- 29:50Speaker 2: easier for them to qualify for EPA standards, and there's
- 29:53Speaker 2: obviously less stringent dot crash safety standards because well it's
- 29:58Speaker 2: a motorcycle. Yeah, yeah, that's I'd loved it. I've always
- 30:02Speaker 2: wanted to do India north to south, right like. And
- 30:05Speaker 2: I like the fact that it's a little bit bigger.
- 30:07Speaker 2: I've ridden the five hundred Bullet and some of the
- 30:09Speaker 2: other ones that are like that, and you know, I'm
- 30:11Speaker 2: a fairly big guy, and it's just it feels uncomfortably small,
- 30:15Speaker 2: whereas this felt just right.
- 30:16Speaker 1: It felt a lot like my Motagouzi V seven. It
- 30:20Speaker 1: rode really nice, it was fun on the twisties. It's
- 30:23Speaker 1: not a it's you know, the chassis flexes a bit.
- 30:26Speaker 2: It's a standard motorcycle, right like as in definition like
- 30:30Speaker 2: it's it's like a Yamaha XS six fifty or a
- 30:34Speaker 2: Bonaville or something that standard classification.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Totally really cool, and I think any I noticed that,
- 30:40Speaker 1: you know, wherever you stopped, there was conversations around the bike,
- 30:42Speaker 1: but in this in this very charming way, like, yeah,
- 30:45Speaker 1: not oh look at this very expensive, fancy motorcycle, but
- 30:48Speaker 1: oh my grandpa had one of those. Yeah, And unless
- 30:51Speaker 1: it's positive interaction, it really does and it gets fairly
- 30:54Speaker 1: good fuel economy. It has abs, which I think is
- 30:57Speaker 1: actually a really important thing for travelers to con because
- 31:00Speaker 1: the world is full of surprises.
- 31:02Speaker 2: And people are really distracted. I mean, I'll be honest,
- 31:05Speaker 2: I don't ride on the road that much anymore because
- 31:08Speaker 2: every there's five million Kias doing one hundred mile an
- 31:11Speaker 2: hour on the highway now with all the texting, and
- 31:14Speaker 2: cars are just fast they are, So it's interesting to
- 31:17Speaker 2: have those things.
- 31:18Speaker 1: So I really think that that's a motorcycle that will
- 31:21Speaker 1: continue to do well in the marketplace. I like the
- 31:24Speaker 1: fact that it's old school. I like the fact that
- 31:26Speaker 1: it's inexpensive.
- 31:27Speaker 2: They're still made in India, right they are. That's cool.
- 31:29Speaker 1: I think it's super cool. So, yeah, that was a
- 31:31Speaker 1: really fun one. It was kind of sad to see
- 31:33Speaker 1: that one go. Yeah, that was really a fun bike
- 31:36Speaker 1: to have. For a couple months that we had it,
- 31:38Speaker 1: we did a fun little video. You can go on
- 31:40Speaker 1: to our Expedition Portal YouTube channel and check that out.
- 31:42Speaker 1: We did some video review on that as well. And
- 31:45Speaker 1: then we're talking about value propositions. We got one more truck.
- 31:48Speaker 2: Yeah yeah. So if we're balancing multi strata with Royal
- 31:51Speaker 2: Endfield and TRX, let's talk about something that's equally as
- 31:54Speaker 2: ancient as an Endfield and let's talk about the fifteen
- 31:57Speaker 2: year old twenty twenty two Nissan Frontier. Sorry, I had
- 32:01Speaker 2: to say it, like, this car looks great. It looks
- 32:04Speaker 2: so good it aesthetically it looks really good. There's a
- 32:07Speaker 2: lot of details of it that we like that we'll
- 32:09Speaker 2: get into. But what was frustrating for me is in
- 32:12Speaker 2: it was twenty thirteen or twenty fourteen when I was
- 32:15Speaker 2: running unsealed four by four in Australia. I was at
- 32:18Speaker 2: the press launch for the D twenty three Navara and
- 32:20Speaker 2: I was told this is going to come to the US.
- 32:22Speaker 2: And it was one of the best chassis in that
- 32:24Speaker 2: class that I've ever driven, because it had a five
- 32:26Speaker 2: link rear, NT had four wheel discs, It had a
- 32:29Speaker 2: really peppy little diesel engine, which obviously we wouldn't get here.
- 32:32Speaker 2: You know, it was good enough that Mercedes actually used
- 32:34Speaker 2: that as the basis for their X class. So that
- 32:37Speaker 2: means that met all of their NVH, all of their
- 32:39Speaker 2: quality standards, all their durability testing to put a Mercedes
- 32:42Speaker 2: badge on it. And you know, I was told that
- 32:44Speaker 2: that was going to come here. And not that I'm
- 32:45Speaker 2: like mad about that. I mean, that doesn't matter, but
- 32:47Speaker 2: it's it's interesting to me. And you know, you kind
- 32:50Speaker 2: of hit the nail on the head is that Nissan
- 32:52Speaker 2: looks to Toyota, that's the that's their competitors.
- 32:54Speaker 1: So but Toyota is so far behind. Yeah, so it
- 32:57Speaker 1: just puts Nissan oftentimes further behind. Although there are a
- 33:01Speaker 1: bunch of things that they did with the new twenty
- 33:03Speaker 1: twenty two Frontier that are in my mind and improvement
- 33:06Speaker 1: over the Tacoma. So you're at three hundred and ten
- 33:09Speaker 1: horse power, yeah, and you have a nine speed transmission,
- 33:12Speaker 1: which is three more speeds than the Tacoma. So you're
- 33:16Speaker 1: going to end up with a much lower first gear
- 33:18Speaker 1: and you're going to be able to better utilize that
- 33:20Speaker 1: three hundred and ten horse power throughout the driveability range
- 33:24Speaker 1: because you're just going to have more cogs available to
- 33:26Speaker 1: keep it keep it in the power band.
- 33:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it does make me. I think that
- 33:30Speaker 2: the Tacoma as a as a platform is it's good.
- 33:33Speaker 2: Can't fault it, but you can fault the performance and
- 33:35Speaker 2: driving experience, and I think that's where the Frontier will
- 33:39Speaker 2: really be interesting. Personally, I think it looks better than
- 33:41Speaker 2: the Tacoma. I think the Tacoma there's just so many
- 33:44Speaker 2: Tacomas out there, and it's yeah, that's true. Maybe that's
- 33:47Speaker 2: what it is. Yeah, the Tacoma, I think is.
- 33:49Speaker 1: A handsome it's handsome, it looks and there's some great
- 33:52Speaker 1: aftermarket components that really improve the overall look. But once
- 33:55Speaker 1: you start to add those things that make them look
- 33:58Speaker 1: more adventury, you're over payloads.
- 34:00Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, and this thing has a max payload
- 34:02Speaker 2: of sixteen hundred and ten pounds, which is significant. Yeah,
- 34:06Speaker 2: I'm sure that that's like a long bed to annual
- 34:09Speaker 2: window to wheel drive thing. But you pulled up fourteen
- 34:12Speaker 2: hundred pounds for their ROW four X, yeah, which is
- 34:15Speaker 2: still three hundred pounds more than the equivalent TRD. Yeah,
- 34:18Speaker 2: that's that's significant. You know, twenty five percent improvement at payload,
- 34:22Speaker 2: that's notable. Yeah, starts at twenty eight thousand dollars loaded,
- 34:26Speaker 2: just under forty, so cheaper than a TRD, cheaper than
- 34:30Speaker 2: a gladiator. Yeah, it's it's it's fascinating, you know. There
- 34:33Speaker 2: it's weird to me that they're still using a chassis
- 34:36Speaker 2: that is from two thousand and five. I wonder if
- 34:40Speaker 2: there's just something that we maybe there's not, don't know. Yeah,
- 34:43Speaker 2: maybe maybe that's it, you know, crash testing or some
- 34:46Speaker 2: crazy thing that would have made it so much more
- 34:49Speaker 2: expensive to bring here. I don't know. You know, they
- 34:51Speaker 2: they build D twenty three Navara which Navara Frontier just
- 34:55Speaker 2: essentially the same truck, different names for different markets. They
- 34:59Speaker 2: build that in Spain and they build it in Mexico.
- 35:01Speaker 2: I mean, we're here in Arizona and I see Nissa
- 35:03Speaker 2: Navaras with the five link weer end here, So maybe
- 35:07Speaker 2: they wanted to keep it built in the United States.
- 35:09Speaker 2: I think that that's cool. So it could have been
- 35:11Speaker 2: a tooling issue. Yeah, I really don't know. It's like
- 35:14Speaker 2: I wouldn't want to, you know, the one thousand and
- 35:16Speaker 2: five iPod. The one real advantage of leaf spring rear
- 35:20Speaker 2: end is that it has a broader range of payload
- 35:23Speaker 2: where it forms properly a coil spring, even if it's progressive.
- 35:28Speaker 2: There's a much tighter range of payload where it performs well. Yeah,
- 35:32Speaker 2: Whereas a leaf spring, by the nature of its design,
- 35:36Speaker 2: the more way you add to it, the more leaves
- 35:38Speaker 2: it engages. So it's very progressive throughout the entire travel range.
- 35:44Speaker 2: So maybe it's just something as simple as that. But
- 35:46Speaker 2: you can make a coil spring rear end carry a
- 35:50Speaker 2: lot of payload. I mean a RAM twenty five hundred,
- 35:52Speaker 2: for example, that has upwards of four thousand pounds of
- 35:55Speaker 2: payload when properly equipped, and you could put a Nissan
- 35:57Speaker 2: Frontier in the back of it. Yeah, and it's still
- 36:00Speaker 2: I don't know. I mean, I guess I just I
- 36:01Speaker 2: have a little bit of a beef with that because
- 36:03Speaker 2: I would have liked to have the bones of a
- 36:05Speaker 2: car are its chassis and to now be on the
- 36:08Speaker 2: third generation of a vehicle that is wearing I want
- 36:11Speaker 2: to say third generation on that, I think. So yeah,
- 36:14Speaker 2: two thousand and five. Yeah, that's just seems a bit
- 36:16Speaker 2: lazy to me, not not to dwell on it, but yeah,
- 36:19Speaker 2: they did a lot of great things. They're improving the
- 36:21Speaker 2: ride quality of that vehicle through things like hydraulic body
- 36:24Speaker 2: mouse They're saying an eighty percent reduction and you know
- 36:27Speaker 2: kind of vibrations, noise, vibration, harshness coming through that into
- 36:30Speaker 2: the chassis and that laminated acoustic glass that I was
- 36:33Speaker 2: talking about in the Ram t Rex, which not too
- 36:36Speaker 2: long ago was something you can only really find in
- 36:38Speaker 2: really expensive vehicles. That's in the that's in the Frontier now,
- 36:41Speaker 2: So that's really cool. I think it looks great. I'm
- 36:43Speaker 2: sure it'll have like I've seen Nissan usually does those
- 36:46Speaker 2: really kick in front fender there does their sound systems,
- 36:49Speaker 2: because they're both based in Tennessee.
- 36:51Speaker 1: Sure, you know, like, that's that's really cool. I do
- 36:53Speaker 1: like the fact that it's a nine speed. I like
- 36:55Speaker 1: the fact that the payload is in that fourteen hundred
- 36:58Speaker 1: pound range with the full off road.
- 37:00Speaker 2: Package, because that leaves you a solid thousand pounds after people.
- 37:04Speaker 1: Yeah, a couple of close full thirty two inch diameter tire,
- 37:07Speaker 1: rear locking differential. So in that regard, I think I
- 37:11Speaker 1: think that there's some benefits. I would have really liked
- 37:13Speaker 1: to have seen.
- 37:13Speaker 2: That five link crew in because it would have just
- 37:15Speaker 2: been different, you know, it would have it would have
- 37:18Speaker 2: been I guess the Gladiator would be the only one
- 37:20Speaker 2: that has a coil sprung rereund in that segment, in
- 37:23Speaker 2: that segment, Yeah, but the Gladiator is a different one.
- 37:26Speaker 2: Gladiator is like I know that it's in that segment,
- 37:28Speaker 2: but I don't necessarily like, but you can get a gladiator.
- 37:31Speaker 1: To your point, you can get a gladiator with seventeen
- 37:33Speaker 1: hundred pound payload.
- 37:34Speaker 2: Yeah, with the coils, you can go and get like
- 37:36Speaker 2: five or six grand off of a Gladiator.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 37:38Speaker 2: You know, I remember when I tried to buy one
- 37:41Speaker 2: of the Nissan Titans with that comments, I could get
- 37:44Speaker 2: twelve thousand dollars off any of the domestic diesels, or
- 37:47Speaker 2: I could pay sticker for the Nissan. Like they're pricing.
- 37:50Speaker 2: To me has always seemed a little bit weird. Like
- 37:52Speaker 2: when we had that Tundra, I thought the drive line
- 37:56Speaker 2: was really great on it. That also had the nine speed,
- 37:58Speaker 2: but I had the endurance be eight in great drive line.
- 38:01Speaker 2: I mean, these are the people that do the GTR,
- 38:03Speaker 2: but it was overpriced for what it was like you
- 38:05Speaker 2: couldn't find them. You could get a King Ranch F
- 38:08Speaker 2: one fifty for what you could get a Midspec And
- 38:11Speaker 2: it just must it must come down to volume. I
- 38:13Speaker 2: mean they're making so many F one fifties that. Yeah,
- 38:16Speaker 2: they just get some economy of scale that I don't
- 38:18Speaker 2: know how you could ever, which will be interesting. The
- 38:20Speaker 2: new Tundra is in the wings. We know it's coming
- 38:24Speaker 2: out literally any moment, maybe even by the time this
- 38:26Speaker 2: podcast goes live. Yeah, it'll be interesting to see what
- 38:29Speaker 2: the new Tundra. But hopefully the frame is not aesthetics
- 38:33Speaker 2: of the Frontier really really nice. I think great. I
- 38:36Speaker 2: think I'm partial to the Gladiator, but I think if
- 38:39Speaker 2: I took that out of the basket, I would say
- 38:41Speaker 2: it's currently the best looking mid sized truck on the market.
- 38:45Speaker 1: And the Nissan Frontier has become the most reliable mid
- 38:49Speaker 1: sized truck in the United States. Incredibly reliable platform, which
- 38:54Speaker 1: is what a lot of people look towards Nissans for.
- 38:56Speaker 1: So if you're if you want a modern mid sized
- 38:59Speaker 1: truck that kind of has a little bit of an
- 39:01Speaker 1: international feel and really good reliability, this could be.
- 39:04Speaker 2: A good bet. Yeah. I think they're I think they're
- 39:06Speaker 2: honest trucks. Love that they have a you know, three
- 39:09Speaker 2: hundred and ten horsepower. You know that motor is going
- 39:11Speaker 2: to be reliable.
- 39:12Speaker 1: Yeah, Now, you just recently made a new acquisition for
- 39:16Speaker 1: a pickup.
- 39:17Speaker 2: Yeah. Oh, we're talking about that one. Yeah. So I'm
- 39:21Speaker 2: doing an AV Prospector XL. I'm going to kind of
- 39:24Speaker 2: consolidate a few a few of our show vehicles for
- 39:28Speaker 2: adventure imports because we're not doing shows during COVID. You know,
- 39:31Speaker 2: we had, I guess kind of hoped that that would change,
- 39:34Speaker 2: but it looks like we're realistically into the end of
- 39:37Speaker 2: this year before before that happens. I say that, and
- 39:39Speaker 2: I'll go back and listen to this in twenty twenty
- 39:41Speaker 2: five and we'll still be in it. But yeah, I'm
- 39:44Speaker 2: really excited for that. I absolutely love that truck. So
- 39:47Speaker 2: it looks so good. So I got a I got
- 39:49Speaker 2: a twenty five hundred Laramie and it has like the
- 39:52Speaker 2: Level two Laramie package has the cool seats and kind
- 39:55Speaker 2: of all Kintara ish textured leathers on the inside. Like
- 39:59Speaker 2: the thing I like about it is it doesn't really
- 40:01Speaker 2: pickup trucks either look work or they look old man
- 40:05Speaker 2: with the chrome and weird dual colored. Sure, there's some
- 40:09Speaker 2: weird things, this is just an attractive, youthful truck to me, totally.
- 40:12Speaker 2: I got the twelvent screen. It's great that Commings. This
- 40:15Speaker 2: is the first time I've owned to Cummins. And how
- 40:18Speaker 2: do you like it compared to the power stroke? Well,
- 40:20Speaker 2: like I've had two of the six sevens and I
- 40:23Speaker 2: definitely think that that the six seven power stroke it
- 40:26Speaker 2: feels more powerful because it is, But the Commins is
- 40:30Speaker 2: more of the diesel you want. It's a special motor.
- 40:33Speaker 2: The six seven to me, doesn't feel particularly special. It
- 40:37Speaker 2: is an immensely complex engine. You know, it has two
- 40:39Speaker 2: cooling systems. It has like this, depending on if you
- 40:42Speaker 2: have a cab and chassis model or a pickup model.
- 40:44Speaker 2: You know, it has some weird turbos and a lot
- 40:47Speaker 2: of failure points, like you cannot work on you have
- 40:49Speaker 2: to remove the cab to work on it. When we
- 40:52Speaker 2: had the engine replaced in the Earth Roamer, it was
- 40:55Speaker 2: the entire front end of the vehicle had to come
- 40:56Speaker 2: off where this feels like a big jeep and I, oh,
- 41:00Speaker 2: there's the injection pump, there's the turbo to the other side.
- 41:03Speaker 2: You could work on it. You could know if something
- 41:05Speaker 2: was wrong. It's not buried beneath a bunch of stuff
- 41:08Speaker 2: and there's just something to it. Like how it makes
- 41:10Speaker 2: the power is really fascinating and it feels more trucky.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Well, and it seems like because you can get this
- 41:16Speaker 1: AEV package, it seems like that's the reason to buy
- 41:19Speaker 1: a RAM is because you can get this amazing yeah,
- 41:22Speaker 1: AEV modification set that completely changes the video.
- 41:25Speaker 2: I probably would have bought a Tremor had I not
- 41:28Speaker 2: walked into the local dealer and they said, oh you
- 41:31Speaker 2: want that, Okay, yeah, well that's sticker plus ten thousand
- 41:35Speaker 2: dollars and I just laughed at them because that's like
- 41:37Speaker 2: shocks I'm going to take off and yeah, yeah, tors
- 41:40Speaker 2: and front end. Yeah cool. I didn't even have a winch.
- 41:43Speaker 2: It was like the cheapest Tremor Super Duty you could
- 41:46Speaker 2: spec and they wanted ten grand over it. So I
- 41:48Speaker 2: walk right to my buddy Jeff, I think it's York
- 41:51Speaker 2: Dodge up here, and just got a Nobs price, you know.
- 41:54Speaker 2: I think I got eight or eight grand off on
- 41:56Speaker 2: it or something. It looks so it looks so good.
- 41:58Speaker 2: But yeah, I bought it because as the AEV thing.
- 42:01Speaker 1: I wonder how many Rams are sold because of AEV
- 42:04Speaker 1: like I certain in our audience, I.
- 42:07Speaker 2: Certainly know quite a few people that's why they're buying
- 42:10Speaker 2: rams is because they have these OE level you know,
- 42:13Speaker 2: properly engineered, properly validated accessories that they can put on
- 42:16Speaker 2: the vehicles and not ruin them. When I built that
- 42:19Speaker 2: a few years back, I built a twenty sixteen Super
- 42:22Speaker 2: Duty with the six seven and it was nice. I
- 42:24Speaker 2: put the airb bumper on it. I did icon suspension
- 42:27Speaker 2: and wheels, I did a long range tank, but it
- 42:30Speaker 2: was kind of like you're taking the best room over here,
- 42:32Speaker 2: the best room over here, a pinch of this, a
- 42:34Speaker 2: pinch of that, and you kind of end up with
- 42:35Speaker 2: something that works kind of where the AEV stuff just
- 42:39Speaker 2: it's all engineered as a system, so it's you know,
- 42:43Speaker 2: it starts at seventeen thousand dollars, which which sounds like
- 42:45Speaker 2: a lot. But try a good carly system and then
- 42:48Speaker 2: try a good you know, buckstop bumper, and then try
- 42:51Speaker 2: putting fortys on that with fenders and all the stuff
- 42:54Speaker 2: that's never meant to work together. And then the resale
- 42:56Speaker 2: value you can get a good deal on the truck.
- 42:58Speaker 2: You can do these grades, and you know, I don't know,
- 43:01Speaker 2: that's always something that I that I heavily consider because
- 43:03Speaker 2: I do like it. With how often you sell cars. Well,
- 43:06Speaker 2: I I yeah, but I do that because it makes sense.
- 43:09Speaker 2: But why not protect your investment? But I but I
- 43:11Speaker 2: buy and sell the cars before they they fall off
- 43:14Speaker 2: the cliffs, right, I get my use out of them.
- 43:16Speaker 2: I enjoy building them. It's a marketing tool for adventure imports.
- 43:20Speaker 2: And yeah, I don't know, Yeah, I like it. I
- 43:22Speaker 2: think that's a great look at it's I'm really excited
- 43:25Speaker 2: for it. I mean, basically the plan is throw the
- 43:27Speaker 2: AEV book at it. I'm going to do probably the
- 43:30Speaker 2: twin Titan tanks because I'm gonna they have this really
- 43:32Speaker 2: cool spare thirty eight gallons or something, and it literally
- 43:36Speaker 2: goes in where the factory spare is and then you
- 43:38Speaker 2: fill it from inside the bed and you end up
- 43:40Speaker 2: with ninety or one hundred gallons between the two. And
- 43:43Speaker 2: you know, if I ever want to like drive the
- 43:45Speaker 2: cabo and back without fueling up, yeah, well, I mean
- 43:48Speaker 2: with questionable Ultra little sil Or diesel and bough right. Yeah. Yeah,
- 43:52Speaker 2: So it'll be an interesting Oh that'll be a fun one.
- 43:54Speaker 2: It'll be an interesting project. We're obviously going to be
- 43:56Speaker 2: doing some content on that with AEV and you know,
- 43:59Speaker 2: kind of walking through the process of actually buying one
- 44:02Speaker 2: of these and hashtag not sponsored but yeah, not sponsored.
- 44:06Speaker 2: We're you know, like av was kind enough to offer
- 44:09Speaker 2: like an industry discount in the same way that we've
- 44:11Speaker 2: offered them industry discounts on our products. But yeah, truthful,
- 44:15Speaker 2: I'm just passionate about that AEV stuff. It's always been
- 44:17Speaker 2: a it's been a pinnacle thing for me. And when
- 44:20Speaker 2: you buy land cruisers and gladiators and the vehicles I've had,
- 44:23Speaker 2: they maintained their value. So it's like I've just had
- 44:26Speaker 2: these successive savings accounts.
- 44:28Speaker 1: Yeah, which not a bad way to do it. That
- 44:29Speaker 1: you can have fun with if you can, why not.
- 44:32Speaker 1: So that's exciting. Look forward to seeing how that comes along.
- 44:34Speaker 1: We'll put put together some content. Yeah, I'm really looking
- 44:38Speaker 1: forward to it. It's just an easy truck to drive.
- 44:40Speaker 1: I couldn't believe it when you let me drive it. It
- 44:42Speaker 1: was awesome. It's really smooth.
- 44:44Speaker 2: I mean, I guess they're kind of calling this the
- 44:46Speaker 2: Gen four and a half of that truck. It shares
- 44:49Speaker 2: quite a bit in common with the Gen four, which
- 44:51Speaker 2: I want to say was twenty thirteen to twenty eighteen
- 44:55Speaker 2: or something. But you know, it's a redesigned engine, same concept,
- 44:59Speaker 2: but can pas to graph fight block. Our friend, mutual friend,
- 45:02Speaker 2: Mario Donovan from at Overland, he is like a RAM fanatic,
- 45:07Speaker 2: and I was standing next to his truck and it
- 45:08Speaker 2: was just considerably louder. His are all aev built considerably
- 45:12Speaker 2: louder than this truck, so it is nearly luxurious to
- 45:16Speaker 2: ride in. It was. The quality of materials was impressive,
- 45:19Speaker 2: and that's why I'm just such a big fan of
- 45:21Speaker 2: RAM these days. Like again, I have the Ford, I
- 45:24Speaker 2: have the RAM, and when I look at them, the
- 45:26Speaker 2: RAM is just more premium. It's just more put together.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Everything feels a little bit thicker. Everything feels a little
- 45:31Speaker 2: bit more purposeful, like somebody who was designing it actually

- 45:48Speaker 2: decided to go with it. That's why you spent your
- 45:49Speaker 2: money on it. Yeah nice.
- 45:51Speaker 1: Yeah, well, so that'll be an exciting project and we
- 45:53Speaker 1: appreciate everyone for listening and catching everyone up on our
- 45:58Speaker 1: recent escapades with the new vehicles. So it'll be interesting
- 46:00Speaker 1: to actually get our hands on a Frontier and we'll
- 46:03Speaker 1: report back on how that goes when we do. And
- 46:05Speaker 1: other than that, we will talk to you next time.
- 46:08Speaker 2: Take care,
