- 0:00Which is harder to change, an attitude or a skill?
- 0:05There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:09Chad #12115 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:12yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:15you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:17This message is dedicated to Tom Crosby.
- 0:19Here's the upgrade. You may think your skills are
- 0:23what make you valuable, but upgraded thinking understand
- 0:25skills can be taught to anyone. Attitude has to be brought.
- 0:30Here's the story, superstar sales trainer Frake Soma says.
- 0:35I hire for attitude and train for skill.
- 0:38Soma has neither the time nor the wish to change people's
- 0:41attitudes. A burger chain in Tennessee
- 0:44built an entire company on that idea.
- 0:47In 1956, Fred Powell Barger opened a little burger stand in
- 0:52Kingsport. Today, Powell's Sudden Service
- 0:56has about 31 locations, and it is the only restaurant company
- 1:00ever to win the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality
- 1:02Award. Pals does about $2500 in sales
- 1:06per square foot annually. Many of the leading burger
- 1:09brands are closer to $650. Pals makes one mistake for every
- 1:153600 orders. It's frontline turnover is about
- 1:191/3 the industry average, and when Harvard Business Review
- 1:22studied them, 4 out of 10 employees were 16 to 18 years
- 1:26old. How do they achieve the success
- 1:29they hired for Attitude? PALS studied its very best
- 1:33people and built a 60 question survey around who they are, not
- 1:38what they know who they are. One of the statements is for the
- 1:43most part, I am happy with myself.
- 1:45If you don't pass, you don't get an interview.
- 1:48Then they train for skill 120 hours before you work a station
- 1:53alone. Random pop quizzes for as long
- 1:55as you work there. Miss one question in your
- 1:57retrain before you touch that station again.
- 1:59Former CEO Tom Crosby said if people aren't doing something
- 2:04right, that's not a problem with them, it's a problem with the
- 2:07training. Pals can fix a skill problem.
- 2:10What they can't fix is a person who doesn't want to be there.
- 2:14W Clement Stone said it this way.
- 2:16There is a little difference between people, but that little
- 2:20difference makes a big difference.
- 2:21The little difference is attitude.
- 2:24The big difference is whether it is positive or negative.
- 2:29So if you're hiring, look past the resume.
- 2:32You can teach the right person, the Friar, and if you're the one
- 2:35hoping to be hired, promoted or trusted with more, stop telling
- 2:38yourself you're not qualified. Qualified can be taught.
- 2:41Tom Peters put it this way, The attitude you decide to take to
- 2:45work today is your biggest life decision.
- 2:49Period. The better story to tell
- 2:52yourself is they can teach me the job, only I decide how to
- 2:56show up to it. Skill takes time to develop, but
- 3:00attitude, you can change that in an instant.
- 3:03Tell me a story of someone you'd hire on Attitude Alone to from
- 3:07chadsmith@gmail.com. Send someone a text and tell
- 3:10them you're the kind of person I'd hire before I ever saw a
- 3:14resume. You can get a free copy of my
