- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories of the day. Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Not So Fast, my friends.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Welcome to Not So Fast.
- 0:18Speaker 2: I'm Andrew Perloff.
- 0:18Speaker 3: He's Paul Pabst.
- 0:20Speaker 4: We are still in the baseball portion of the Man Cave,
- 0:24Speaker 4: and it's October 1st.
- 0:25Speaker 3: The greatest month in sports, Paul.
- 0:28Speaker 5: Yeah, it's not really up for debate. And let me
- 0:29Speaker 5: give you some bonus coverage before we get to the
- 0:31Speaker 5: MLB playoffs. Starting tonight, 61 straight days of college football
- 0:36Speaker 5: or NFL. And it ends December 3rd. I don't know
- 0:38Speaker 5: what's going on there. We've got to find a game
- 0:40Speaker 5: to put December 3rd. But 61 straight days of college
- 0:43Speaker 5: or pro football.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Love it.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Wow.
- 0:45Speaker 4: Okay, well, obviously, yesterday we had baseball. Let's start with
- 0:49Speaker 4: the Yankees-Red Sox. Yankees blow out the Red Sox two
- 0:52Speaker 4: straight games. Who are these guys on the Yankees are hitting?
- 0:55Speaker 4: I did not expect this at all.
- 0:57Speaker 5: Yeah, two rookies, George Lombard, Spencer Jones. I think what
- 1:00Speaker 5: the vibe is when you go into that Yankees series,
- 1:02Speaker 5: I think the national coverage was about Aaron Judge being gone.
- 1:05Speaker 5: But then I looked at the local coverage. They were
- 1:08Speaker 5: much more confident going into the game. And if you
- 1:10Speaker 5: look at what they did, You allowed Aaron Judge to
- 1:12Speaker 5: get a couple more days rest and be ready for
- 1:14Speaker 5: the next series.
- 1:14Speaker 4: I wonder, though, are they getting a little too confident
- 1:16Speaker 4: about some of these bottom of the lineup guys? You know,
- 1:19Speaker 4: they're facing the Rays a much deeper rotation than the
- 1:21Speaker 4: Red Sox.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Is this going to continue?
- 1:22Speaker 5: But you know the theory. Rookies don't know any better.
- 1:25Speaker 5: They don't know that they're rookies. They don't know that
- 1:26Speaker 5: they're on the Yankees and not supposed to be this
- 1:28Speaker 5: good this early. Like the catcher for the Padres is
- 1:30Speaker 5: 20 years old. But I think that the Yankees have
- 1:32Speaker 5: to be obviously in great shape. But not just great
- 1:35Speaker 5: shape is that you can win without your star. And
- 1:38Speaker 5: a team like the Dodgers can win without their star.
- 1:40Speaker 5: But the Red Sox, that was a no-show.
- 1:42Speaker 4: Yeah, again, you can beat one team in the wild card.
- 1:44Speaker 3: We'll see. We'll see.
- 1:45Speaker 4: Okay, I think the game of the day, down in Atlanta,
- 1:48Speaker 4: the Phillies beat the Braves. It was harrowing. Of course,
- 1:52Speaker 4: I'm a Phillies fan. Tough day, but I got through it.
- 1:55Speaker 5: That was almost awful. Bryce Harper had that misjudged fly
- 1:58Speaker 5: ball in the middle innings. And when that went over
- 2:00Speaker 5: his head, Phillies fans were like, that's it.
- 2:02Speaker 2: It's over.
- 2:03Speaker 5: It's not going to work out. If you watch his play,
- 2:05Speaker 5: he just took one step in, one step out, and
- 2:08Speaker 5: got frozen. And after that, you're like, this is how
- 2:10Speaker 5: it's going to end. This is how his offseason is
- 2:12Speaker 5: going to be.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Oh, absolutely.
- 2:14Speaker 4: But every Phillies fan knows Bryce Harper should not be
- 2:16Speaker 4: in right field because he should be at first base,
- 2:19Speaker 4: but he moved to help the team.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Bryce Harper has his detractors, but he is a team guy.
- 2:25Speaker 4: So I don't think people are going to kill him
- 2:26Speaker 4: as much as nationally they might because it did look ridiculous.
- 2:29Speaker 5: It's one of those plays that if the game ends
- 2:31Speaker 5: there or they don't make the comeback with his home
- 2:33Speaker 5: run and Schwarber's home run, that play is the entire offseason.
- 2:37Speaker 4: I think so, but with Bryce Harper and the Phillies,
- 2:39Speaker 4: they just want him healthy and out there. There was
- 2:41Speaker 4: a lot of sort of backroom and a little bit
- 2:44Speaker 4: on-air discussion today, Paul, about Bryce Harper.
- 2:46Speaker 3: You want to clue people in what was going on?
- 2:48Speaker 5: Yeah, Dylan earlier on the Dan Patrick Show said, is
- 2:50Speaker 5: Bryce Harper a Hall of Famer? And he threw it
- 2:53Speaker 5: out there kind of out of nowhere. And Bryce Harper,
- 2:55Speaker 5: I think, is 33. He's got at least five years
- 2:57Speaker 5: left on his contract. But I guess if you stopped
- 2:59Speaker 5: what he did today, I think we're in year 15,
- 3:02Speaker 5: is he a Hall of Famer? I think I know
- 3:04Speaker 5: your answer, but go ahead. The floor is yours.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Well, you know what?
- 3:06Speaker 4: I don't know if they could pull it up. Forget
- 3:08Speaker 4: my answer. Let's talk about, I don't know, Harold Reynolds,
- 3:11Speaker 4: who is a great baseball player. He weighed in on
- 3:14Speaker 4: this after Dan asked him, is Bryce Harper a Hall
- 3:16Speaker 4: of Famer?
- 3:19Speaker 2: No doubt about it. No doubt. No doubt.
- 3:25Speaker 4: That was pretty succinct, and I agree completely. First ballot,
- 3:29Speaker 4: Hall of Fame.
- 3:30Speaker 5: Okay, a couple nuances here. I think he's going to
- 3:32Speaker 5: go to the Hall of Fame some day. But if
- 3:33Speaker 5: you look at his rise to become a phenom, I
- 3:37Speaker 5: don't think it matches what he did on the field.
- 3:39Speaker 5: I think he had three great years, a bunch of
- 3:41Speaker 5: good years, and then he had some seasons where he
- 3:43Speaker 5: hit like 248 and 22 home runs. And he was
- 3:46Speaker 5: a top five MVP candidate twice. Now, he won both
- 3:49Speaker 5: those years, but he had too many average years. And
- 3:52Speaker 5: it's almost like a running back running for 1,000 yards.
- 3:54Speaker 5: It's not greatness. And I'm going to compare him to
- 3:57Speaker 5: Paul Goldschmidt. Paul Goldschmidt is a player you're like, oh, yeah,
- 4:00Speaker 5: he was a good hitter.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:01Speaker 5: But Paul Goldschmidt has no name recognition, no household name,
- 4:04Speaker 5: no juice, no buzz. He was not a phenom. Their
- 4:06Speaker 5: stats for their first 15 years are almost identical. Paul
- 4:09Speaker 5: Goldschmidt's not a first ballot Hall of Famer, and he
- 4:11Speaker 5: shouldn't be. He'll probably sneak in someday. Bryce Harper's getting
- 4:14Speaker 5: in because of the aura around him and a very
- 4:17Speaker 5: good career.
- 4:18Speaker 4: I completely disagree. I mean, first of all, he's much
- 4:21Speaker 4: younger than Paul Goldschmidt. He's already got as many more
- 4:23Speaker 4: home runs.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Than Paul Goldschmidt. And Paul Goldschmidt, that's kind of all
- 4:26Speaker 3: he does is hit home runs.
- 4:27Speaker 5: Okay, his batting average is better. There are a lot
- 4:30Speaker 5: of stats.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Again, I'm going to have to nerd out here. Bryce
- 4:33Speaker 3: Harper is a get-walks guy. He led the entire league.
- 4:36Speaker 2: In walks this year, Paul.
- 4:37Speaker 5: You can't walk your way into the Hall of Fame.
- 4:39Speaker 3: He's walking his way.
- 4:39Speaker 4: He's probably Juan Soto's great at, too. Bryce Harper, he
- 4:44Speaker 4: had the 10th highest OBP in the whole league, and.
- 4:46Speaker 3: He had an off year.
- 4:47Speaker 4: He had a better on-base percentage than Shohei Otani. He
- 4:49Speaker 4: gets on base because he walks.
- 4:51Speaker 5: Paul Goldschmidt. I can't believe we're discussing Goldschmidt versus Harper,
- 4:53Speaker 5: but 390 home runs to Harper's 392. 286 to Harper's, 279.
- 4:59Speaker 5: Four gold gloves, zero for Harper. Silver slugger, five for Goldschmidt,
- 5:02Speaker 5: four for Bryce Harper. War, which I don't understand, but
- 5:05Speaker 5: smart people like you do. War for Paul Goldschmidt, 65,
- 5:09Speaker 5: 56 for Bryce Harper.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Yeah, but by the time Bryce Harper's his age, he'll
- 5:13Speaker 3: be way above that.
- 5:14Speaker 5: So here's the other question. The graphic up there said
- 5:16Speaker 5: first ballot Hall of Fame.
- 5:17Speaker 3: 100%.
- 5:19Speaker 5: All right, that's where it actually bothers me a little
- 5:21Speaker 5: bit because Bryce Harper is, I don't think, even close
- 5:23Speaker 5: to that.
- 5:23Speaker 2: He's 33.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Paul, he's at 392. He's definitely going to get 500.
- 5:27Speaker 5: Do you think he's going to get better in the
- 5:29Speaker 5: next five years?
- 5:29Speaker 4: Do you think Bryce Harper's not? 500 home runs and
- 5:32Speaker 4: two MVPs and tons. You know, I have a stat.
- 5:35Speaker 4: He has the highest OPS for one team in the
- 5:37Speaker 4: postseason of any current player. The only two players historically
- 5:41Speaker 4: above him are Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.
- 5:43Speaker 3: He's an incredible. Incredible playoff player.
- 5:45Speaker 5: Maybe this is wrong of me, but I say first
- 5:47Speaker 5: ballot for Albert Pujols, for Mike Trout, for maybe Otani.
- 5:52Speaker 5: The guys where it's like there is zero doubt. There's
- 5:54Speaker 5: not even a discussion. Stamp it.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Move on.
- 5:56Speaker 5: Like if you look at Pujols' first 10 years, he
- 5:59Speaker 5: was top five for MVP nine out of his first
- 6:02Speaker 5: 10 years. It's galactic. Same with Trout. Same with Griffey.
- 6:05Speaker 5: And it's nothing against Bryce Harper. And I think I'm
- 6:07Speaker 5: skewed by the expectations with the cover of SI. It's
- 6:10Speaker 5: just it was a very good career.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 6:13Speaker 4: 500 home runs and two MVPs. If that's not first ballot,
- 6:16Speaker 4: you're not going to have a lot of first ballots.
- 6:18Speaker 4: I mean, two MVPs is hard to win.
- 6:19Speaker 2: I know.
- 6:20Speaker 3: I think Dale Murphy did not get in with two MVPs.
- 6:22Speaker 4: I was shocked by that. I still don't understand that.
- 6:24Speaker 4: I think it's one of the dumbest omissions of all time.
- 6:27Speaker 4: But Harper also incredible. Does popularity play into it? Because
- 6:31Speaker 4: the jersey still sells.
- 6:32Speaker 5: Image star power. He feels like a superstar. He feels
- 6:34Speaker 5: like a Hall of Famer.
- 6:35Speaker 4: By the way, he would have won a third MVP,
- 6:37Speaker 4: but he got hurt halfway through the season.
- 6:38Speaker 5: He was having a great year. We're going to get
- 6:40Speaker 5: back to this. Hit us up not so fast on
- 6:42Speaker 5: Twitter with your opinion on this because clearly we don't agree.
- 6:45Speaker 5: Cubs no-showed versus the Padres. The Padres and their fans
- 6:48Speaker 5: showed up. The Cubs hit 129 in the series. Pete
- 6:51Speaker 5: Crowe Armstrong, he's not going to be in a good
- 6:53Speaker 5: mood the day he gets his MVP award. He was
- 6:55Speaker 5: 0 for 7. And what makes it even worse for
- 6:58Speaker 5: a Cub fan is that hours before the White Sox
- 7:02Speaker 5: advance in the playoffs. The White Sox, who had zero
- 7:04Speaker 5: expectations this year, are in the playoffs, and the Cubs
- 7:07Speaker 5: are sitting at home this week.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Well, break it down for me. You're from Chicago.
- 7:10Speaker 4: Do they get mad when one team is doing better
- 7:12Speaker 4: than the other? Because in New York, for example, nobody
- 7:14Speaker 4: cares what the Nets do. The Knicks fans are completely oblivious.
- 7:18Speaker 5: I think a Cubs fan, or I should say a
- 7:20Speaker 5: White Sox fan, always in that town feels like a
- 7:22Speaker 5: second-class citizen. They don't get the coverage nationally, especially locally,
- 7:26Speaker 5: even more so. And now White Sox fans are like, scoreboard,
- 7:29Speaker 5: we're playing next week. We're going to have a home
- 7:31Speaker 5: game next week.
- 7:31Speaker 3: So they do compete with the Cubs fans.
- 7:32Speaker 6: Totally.
- 7:33Speaker 5: And I'd say it's more for relevancy than wins-losses. But
- 7:36Speaker 5: the White Sox advance, the last time they were this
- 7:38Speaker 5: deep was... 05 World Series.
- 7:41Speaker 4: I feel like the Clippers could be in game six
- 7:42Speaker 4: of the NBA Finals and the radio calls would be
- 7:45Speaker 4: about the Lakers.
- 7:46Speaker 5: And the White Sox, the one thing about the White Sox,
- 7:47Speaker 5: they have very little star power on their roster. There's
- 7:50Speaker 5: not a lot of household names where a comedy is
- 7:52Speaker 5: really getting there, but they're like two most famous fans
- 7:54Speaker 5: is a former president and a sitting pope.
- 7:56Speaker 2: That's pretty cool.
- 7:57Speaker 3: That's not bad. All right, let's turn to football.
- 7:59Speaker 4: Last night in the wee hours, Steelers trade Joey Porter Jr.
- 8:03Speaker 3: To Dallas. Now, Joey Porter Jr. had been injured or
- 8:07Speaker 3: holding out or something.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Yeah, combo.
- 8:09Speaker 4: And now he's traded Dallas, second round pick in two years.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Let's look at it from a Dallas standpoint. What was
- 8:15Speaker 4: your reaction for the Cowboys?
- 8:16Speaker 5: I love this for the Cowboys. You add a guy
- 8:18Speaker 5: who's a quality starter, if he's not the best player
- 8:20Speaker 5: in the world, but you didn't give up a lot
- 8:22Speaker 5: for him. A second round draft pick, you're getting a
- 8:25Speaker 5: guy who's better than that draft pick. And their defensive
- 8:28Speaker 5: backs aren't that good. Their run defense is better. All
- 8:31Speaker 5: hands on deck. And I think this is also about,
- 8:33Speaker 5: it's almost like you see the state of their division change.
- 8:36Speaker 5: The Eagles don't seem like a Super Bowl team, a
- 8:38Speaker 5: good team. And Washington's middling around, and the Giants are bad.
- 8:42Speaker 5: Why not go all in, as Jerry Jones likes to say?
- 8:44Speaker 4: That point is true. And also, Jerry Jones is not
- 8:46Speaker 4: a young man. It's time to go all in.
- 8:48Speaker 5: Yeah, he's not building for the future.
- 8:50Speaker 4: But I have a question. So they trade Micah Parsons,
- 8:53Speaker 4: and they said, we're going to do things differently. We're
- 8:54Speaker 4: going to build a foundational defense, and we're going to
- 8:57Speaker 4: have a lot of good guys.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Right.
- 8:58Speaker 3: And now they get Joey Porter Jr.
- 9:00Speaker 4: They're probably going to pay him $ 35 million.
- 9:03Speaker 3: A year after the season.
- 9:04Speaker 5: After the season.
- 9:05Speaker 4: Their entire team is free agents. They have all these
- 9:07Speaker 4: named free agents, Quinn and Williams, that are paying. I
- 9:10Speaker 4: don't understand what Dallas is doing in the sense that
- 9:12Speaker 4: the entire team is going to be a free agent
- 9:14Speaker 4: after this year.
- 9:14Speaker 3: They're going to have some tough choices.
- 9:16Speaker 4: And if you gave up a second-round pick for a
- 9:19Speaker 4: player that they're not going to re-sign, then it becomes
- 9:21Speaker 4: a questionable deal.
- 9:22Speaker 5: Yeah, if it doesn't work out on the field, it
- 9:24Speaker 5: becomes a loss. If he plays well, you're glad to
- 9:26Speaker 5: give him the contract. Are you, though?
- 9:28Speaker 3: I mean, how many contracts are Dallas going to give out?
- 9:30Speaker 4: They already paid Dak. They paid Quentin Williams. They're going
- 9:33Speaker 4: to pay C.D., George Pickens. I don't think they're going
- 9:36Speaker 4: to be able to afford Joey Porter long-term.
- 9:37Speaker 5: I don't know that they're going to pay George Pickens
- 9:39Speaker 5: the big money. Why not? I think he's a very
- 9:41Speaker 5: good player, but I think they think they got his
- 9:43Speaker 5: best work and they're not going to invest in this
- 9:45Speaker 5: guy's future. Mark this one down. in the control room.
- 9:47Speaker 5: I don't think they will sign big deal.
- 9:48Speaker 4: George Pickens is still a young man. I mean, I'd
- 9:51Speaker 4: rather Pickens and Porter any day.
- 9:53Speaker 5: Yeah, both are a little bit of head cases. I
- 9:55Speaker 5: will say this. It really goes back to who the
- 9:57Speaker 5: general manager is. It's your owner, and he's in his 80s.
- 9:59Speaker 5: He doesn't make traditional football decisions. He makes reactionary football decisions.
- 10:02Speaker 3: I know.
- 10:03Speaker 2: That's my point.
- 10:03Speaker 3: It seems like same old cowboys in many ways.
- 10:06Speaker 5: But he got bared out. His decision to let Micah
- 10:08Speaker 5: Parsons go because Parsons is injured makes it look like
- 10:12Speaker 5: a fantastic trade, which is happenstance.
- 10:14Speaker 3: Well, you say that. We came into this year saying
- 10:16Speaker 3: finally they fixed their defense. Guess what's awful right now?
- 10:19Speaker 3: Their defense.
- 10:20Speaker 4: So, yeah, I don't know where that narrative came that
- 10:22Speaker 4: they fixed their defense because they absolutely have not.
- 10:25Speaker 3: We'll see.
- 10:26Speaker 4: The other thing is he's a press man coverage. He's
- 10:27Speaker 4: going to play a lot of zone in Dallas. We'll
- 10:29Speaker 4: see how that works out. I think this looks like
- 10:31Speaker 4: a headline win for Dallas, but not necessarily an on-the-field win.
- 10:36Speaker 5: Why do the Steelers let Porter go? You have a
- 10:38Speaker 5: good player in your building. You can just pay him.
- 10:41Speaker 5: He seems like a quality defensive player. Look at the Steelers'
- 10:44Speaker 5: angle of this. Is this waving the white flag or
- 10:46Speaker 5: just financially, fiscally conscious?
- 10:49Speaker 3: Well, actually, I'm saving that for my warm takes.
- 10:51Speaker 4: I have a lot of thoughts on the Steelers because
- 10:54Speaker 4: You look at Joey Porter, you can say, this guy
- 10:56Speaker 4: is awesome. You know, he basically never let up a touchdown.
- 10:59Speaker 4: This is his first game in 2023. Save it for
- 11:01Speaker 4: the take. All right, yeah, I'm getting into it. We
- 11:03Speaker 4: have a lot to get to.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Joey Porter Jr.
- 11:06Speaker 4: however, in 2024, did lead the league in interceptions. We'll
- 11:10Speaker 4: get into all of that. Okay, next segment, warm takes. Paul,
- 11:15Speaker 4: I am so excited about the Cleveland Browns. You're going
- 11:18Speaker 4: to have to just contain me. Not only are they 2-1,
- 11:21Speaker 4: they're 3-1. Oh, my God, am I on that bandwagon.
- 11:25Speaker 4: We'll dive into that and much more next Not So Fast.
- 11:36Speaker 2: We're going to have a challenge.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Could the Phillies keep their season alive with an ABS
- 11:49Speaker 1: challenge this afternoon?
- 11:53Speaker 2: The answer is yes.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Wow.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Oh my God.
- 12:00Speaker 5: Back on Not So Fast with Paps and Perloff. That's
- 12:02Speaker 5: a midday pick-me-up. That's for you, Perloff. You bailed on
- 12:05Speaker 5: your Phillies. You said they would win last night and
- 12:08Speaker 5: then rip your hearts out tonight. That was Phillies reliever
- 12:11Speaker 5: Andrew Painter with the first-ever playoff challenge-off. There's walk-offs. Now
- 12:16Speaker 5: we have a challenge-off, a delayed reaction and celebration.
- 12:19Speaker 4: That is the most mild reaction to a game-winning strikeout
- 12:23Speaker 4: I've ever seen in my life, and that's.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Where we are.
- 12:25Speaker 5: It was like a 10-second delay. There's this long pause
- 12:27Speaker 5: and like a... But you know what? That system is working.
- 12:30Speaker 5: It worked last night.
- 12:31Speaker 3: No, that's true.
- 12:32Speaker 4: The same thing's happening in the NFL, by the way.
- 12:34Speaker 4: They're emphasizing holding. So I've seen at least 25 touchdowns
- 12:37Speaker 4: get called back. So every time the guy starts dancing
- 12:40Speaker 4: or something and the other guy's tapping on his shoulder, no,
- 12:41Speaker 4: it's a holding.
- 12:42Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 12:42Speaker 4: It happened at least 15 times last weekend.
- 12:45Speaker 5: We should start doing this in this show. When we
- 12:47Speaker 5: do something wrong, we just... Can we get a review?
- 12:49Speaker 2: Can we get a review just now?
- 12:50Speaker 4: I know people who are so bothered by replay killing
- 12:53Speaker 4: the excitement of the moment. Are you one of those
- 12:56Speaker 4: more replay, less replay guys? Because you do lose some
- 12:59Speaker 4: of those moments.
- 13:00Speaker 5: I'm usually less, but what MLB did this year with
- 13:03Speaker 5: the review, there's strategy involved. You can't use it too
- 13:05Speaker 5: early if you burn one. So it's become part of
- 13:08Speaker 5: the game quickly, and the delay is weird, but the
- 13:10Speaker 5: review is really fast.
- 13:11Speaker 4: What if it was Game 7 of the World Series,
- 13:13Speaker 4: full count, bases loaded, and you have to wait?
- 13:17Speaker 5: You're a Phillies guy. Tug McGraw throwing the thing up
- 13:19Speaker 5: in the air, and he, wait, wait, just give me
- 13:21Speaker 5: a 20, and we celebrate.
- 13:21Speaker 3: And they're just sort.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Of standing around.
- 13:23Speaker 3: A guy looked at his watch. Yeah, I have an
- 13:25Speaker 3: issue with it. I think you need to keep it
- 13:27Speaker 3: a little more in the moment. But didn't that.
- 13:28Speaker 5: Happen in the Super Bowl with James White and Tom Brady,
- 13:31Speaker 5: his pass to James White for the two-point conversion? Didn't
- 13:34Speaker 5: that get reviewed, and then they had to celebrate or re-celebrate?
- 13:37Speaker 3: Could be. Yeah, I don't remember.
- 13:39Speaker 2: That was a long time ago.
- 13:40Speaker 5: All right, it's time for warm takes here on Not
- 13:42Speaker 5: So Fast. We are fired up. We're shot out of
- 13:44Speaker 5: a cannon. I'm going to go first. So I'm going
- 13:46Speaker 5: to stay with baseball. In sports, when your team is
- 13:49Speaker 5: knocked out, whatever sport it is, it's depressing. It bums
- 13:51Speaker 5: you out. You get sports depressed. And I think this
- 13:53Speaker 5: has an acute effect on hardcore baseball fans. Not everybody
- 13:57Speaker 5: is hardcore, but people who are. If you're a Cub fan,
- 14:00Speaker 5: if you're an Astros fan, if you're a Red Sox fan,
- 14:04Speaker 5: You watch all 162. It's part of your daily routine.
- 14:07Speaker 5: You get up, you listen to sports radio, you get
- 14:10Speaker 5: ready for the day game or night game, and you
- 14:11Speaker 5: listen or watch to all 162 games. And there's not
- 14:15Speaker 5: like football where it's like a game and then a
- 14:16Speaker 5: week to chop it up. It's day by day by day,
- 14:19Speaker 5: and you watch all 162. And when your team has
- 14:21Speaker 5: the rug pulled out from under them, like the Red
- 14:23Speaker 5: Sox or the Cubs who thought they could do some
- 14:25Speaker 5: damage this year, You're kind of like an untethered boat.
- 14:28Speaker 5: What do I do now? I'm like, look at that guy.
- 14:29Speaker 5: He had to put this dummy hat on. He was
- 14:31Speaker 5: so upset. I don't know what that hat does, but
- 14:33Speaker 5: it's not making things any better. And if you're a
- 14:37Speaker 5: White Sox fan, you're in a great mood. But an
- 14:38Speaker 5: Astros fan, you're like, what do we do? And you
- 14:41Speaker 5: have a daily schedule as a baseball fan. Look at
- 14:43Speaker 5: that guy. That's the look. The thousand-yard stare of the offseason.
- 14:48Speaker 5: Now you feel like, what do I do with my life?
- 14:52Speaker 5: I know you have football. I know you have hockey
- 14:53Speaker 5: coming up. But baseball fans, and I'm talking to the
- 14:56Speaker 5: hardcore ones, they have a lifestyle that they live April
- 15:00Speaker 5: through the end of September, and now they don't know
- 15:01Speaker 5: what to do.
- 15:02Speaker 3: I was looking at some math here, Paul.
- 15:04Speaker 4: There's 162 games, and then your season can be over
- 15:07Speaker 4: in two games. So it's the longest regular season, shortest
- 15:11Speaker 4: playoff exit. Because in basketball or hockey, there's usually a five-
- 15:14Speaker 4: or seven-game series. In football, you only have 17 games.
- 15:17Speaker 3: If you go out on the wild card in football,
- 15:19Speaker 3: it doesn't feel like this. Baseball, you're right.
- 15:21Speaker 4: Your whole life's set around this team, and then they're gone.
- 15:25Speaker 5: It's over. And today, you feel like— Remember when you
- 15:28Speaker 5: graduated from college, and you're no longer in school, and
- 15:30Speaker 5: you're like, I'm just a person. I've got to get
- 15:32Speaker 5: a job. It feels like that with baseball.
- 15:34Speaker 3: Oh, absolutely. Okay.
- 15:35Speaker 4: I'm going to go to the NFL and tonight's game, Browns-Steelers. Paul,
- 15:40Speaker 4: the numbers on the Browns, I would say, are shocking.
- 15:43Speaker 4: I'm genuinely shocked. And it's not even that complex of numbers.
- 15:47Speaker 4: The Browns apparently are unbeatable on Thursday night. They're 9-1
- 15:53Speaker 4: in Thursday night home games and won nine in a
- 15:55Speaker 4: row after losing their first game against Denver in 08.
- 15:59Speaker 3: The Steelers... have.
- 16:00Speaker 4: Been at Cleveland four times on Thursday night and have
- 16:03Speaker 4: not won a single one of those. Not only that,
- 16:06Speaker 4: the Steelers have lost four straight at Cleveland. Now, I
- 16:09Speaker 4: told you before last week's Steelers-Bengals game, that was a
- 16:12Speaker 4: game the Steelers always win. Steelers always beat a team
- 16:15Speaker 4: they shouldn't, and then they lose to the Browns. We've
- 16:17Speaker 4: seen it so many times. The Browns are great on
- 16:20Speaker 4: Thursday night. But in all seriousness, yesterday you talked about
- 16:22Speaker 4: the Padres' home field advantage. The Browns will have a
- 16:26Speaker 4: home field advantage tonight, and that's a factor, especially in
- 16:28Speaker 4: this rivalry.
- 16:29Speaker 5: Yeah, there's nothing more Browns than being great on weekdays
- 16:32Speaker 5: and terrible on weekends when games are usually played. But
- 16:34Speaker 5: you're right, this is a very weird position for Browns fans.
- 16:37Speaker 5: If you asked them a month ago, will this game matter?
- 16:40Speaker 5: You're like, I hope it matters, but I don't think
- 16:41Speaker 5: it's going to matter.
- 16:42Speaker 4: But honestly, it has nothing to do with what happened.
- 16:44Speaker 4: It doesn't matter if they're 2-1. They're always good on
- 16:47Speaker 4: Thursday night. They could be typical, awful Browns fans. That
- 16:51Speaker 4: is not the team you're going to see tonight. They
- 16:52Speaker 4: could probably be pretty good.
- 16:53Speaker 5: You know what's fascinating? We could dive into this another day,
- 16:56Speaker 5: but the fallout, if Deshaun Watson plays well and they
- 16:59Speaker 5: finish above. 500, they have to sign him again.
- 17:02Speaker 3: They have to get another... They are above 500 now,
- 17:04Speaker 3: and he's not played well.
- 17:06Speaker 5: He hasn't played poorly. Let's say he averages 200 yards
- 17:09Speaker 5: a game and two touchdowns. I think that's what he's
- 17:11Speaker 5: done the past two weeks. They are so hungry for
- 17:15Speaker 5: decent quarterback play that if he finishes with, like, 25
- 17:18Speaker 5: touchdowns and 12 picks, they're going to look like that's
- 17:21Speaker 5: Dan Marino.
- 17:22Speaker 4: I'd be shocked if Deshaun Watson gets a 25 with
- 17:24Speaker 4: this team. You know, Baker played pretty well, and they
- 17:26Speaker 4: let him go.
- 17:27Speaker 5: Exactly.
- 17:29Speaker 4: If you watch the Browns, they've got to get their
- 17:31Speaker 4: penalties in order. They're second in the league in penalties,
- 17:33Speaker 4: but it feels like they're first.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Watch tonight.
- 17:35Speaker 4: If they can just avoid all the pre-snap penalties, that'll
- 17:39Speaker 4: be a difference maker. I think they have a lot
- 17:41Speaker 4: of flaws in these first three games. I think that
- 17:43Speaker 4: 2-1 is kind of thin. Although they have a great chance,
- 17:45Speaker 4: the numbers say tonight.
- 17:46Speaker 5: All right, it's time for my next warm take, and
- 17:48Speaker 5: this is on behalf of both of us and the
- 17:50Speaker 5: entire Not So Fast crew. This is an angry take
- 17:53Speaker 5: more than a warm take. Everyone knows Bears third-string quarterback
- 17:56Speaker 5: Case Keenum had a really nice night the other night
- 17:58Speaker 5: against the Eagles. He's had a nice pro career, and
- 18:01Speaker 5: I bet you saw the other day when they were
- 18:02Speaker 5: talking about Case Keenum of how great his career was
- 18:05Speaker 5: at the University of Houston. He threw for 19,000 yards
- 18:07Speaker 5: at Houston. That's nuts. 155 touchdowns. He is, objectively... one
- 18:14Speaker 5: of the greatest statistical and everything quarterbacks in college football history.
- 18:18Speaker 5: Guess what he's not? He's not in the College Football
- 18:21Speaker 5: Hall of Fame. With those numbers, he's not in the
- 18:24Speaker 5: College Football Hall of Fame. He should be in with
- 18:26Speaker 5: half of those numbers.
- 18:27Speaker 2: I looked it up.
- 18:28Speaker 5: He is not eligible for the College Football Hall of Fame.
- 18:30Speaker 7: What?
- 18:31Speaker 2: Yes.
- 18:31Speaker 5: The Hall of Fame has a criteria. You must be
- 18:34Speaker 5: first team or second team All-American in some level, UPI, AP,
- 18:39Speaker 5: coaches poll. There's like four different openings. Now, the problem
- 18:42Speaker 5: is when Case Keenum was great, and he was great
- 18:44Speaker 5: in college, I think Sam Bradford was All-American or Colt
- 18:47Speaker 5: McCoy or RG3. I went and I actually called this
- 18:51Speaker 5: morning and woke some people up at the College Football
- 18:52Speaker 5: Hall of Fame. Very nice people. We've been there, Pearl.
- 18:55Speaker 5: It's a great place. The College Football Hall of Fame
- 18:58Speaker 5: does not decide who goes in the College Football Hall
- 19:00Speaker 5: of Fame. Stay with me for a second. The National
- 19:04Speaker 5: Football Foundation sets the criteria for how to get in
- 19:07Speaker 5: the College Football Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame
- 19:09Speaker 5: is a showcase. They don't handle the rules. So the NFF,
- 19:12Speaker 5: the National Football Foundation, you have a rule that prevents
- 19:14Speaker 5: Case Keenum because he didn't make some subjective list, right?
- 19:19Speaker 5: You can't take away 19,000 yards, 155 touchdowns. Rules are
- 19:23Speaker 5: not supposed to prevent honoring of greatness. Case Keenum clearly
- 19:26Speaker 5: belongs in the College Football Hall of Fame. I mean,
- 19:28Speaker 5: he should be first ballot. This is an easy one.
- 19:31Speaker 5: Get the guys together, go to an offsite, play some golf,
- 19:34Speaker 5: have a meeting, and say, hey, we're going to suspend
- 19:36Speaker 5: the rules case-by-case basis. Everyone would agree with it because
- 19:40Speaker 5: Case Keenum, it's shocking that he's not in the College
- 19:42Speaker 5: Football Hall of Fame, and he should be now, like
- 19:44Speaker 5: this time. Wow. I'm actually bothered by this.
- 19:46Speaker 3: I thought I was a Case Keenum apologist. I love this.
- 19:49Speaker 5: This is great. it's not about knowing Case Keenum. It's
- 19:51Speaker 5: about some arbitrary rule that's based off voting. And the
- 19:55Speaker 5: reason Case Keenum wasn't All-American was because he played at Houston.
- 19:59Speaker 5: If he did, you know, and they weren't 11-0, so
- 20:02Speaker 5: they gave it to the big boys, Sam Bradford, RG3.
- 20:04Speaker 4: Now, one thing I will counter, the counterargument is some
- 20:08Speaker 4: of these offensive systems create huge numbers.
- 20:11Speaker 3: You know, Case has all these numbers.
- 20:12Speaker 4: Timmy Chang at Hawaii and June Jones is kind of
- 20:15Speaker 4: three or four levels below.
- 20:16Speaker 5: I would be fine with that. If you said he
- 20:17Speaker 5: did it for one year, like Graham Harrell at Texas
- 20:20Speaker 5: Tech had that one monstrous year or one and a half. Fine,
- 20:23Speaker 5: but this is four years of awesome quarterbacking.
- 20:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I love, Case has talked about his coaches.
- 20:28Speaker 3: He had Art Bryles, who's one.
- 20:29Speaker 4: Of the greatest offensive coaches, and then Cliff Kingsbury came
- 20:32Speaker 4: in and was QB coach. He was at a great spot.
- 20:35Speaker 4: So I don't think, I'm not sure Case cares right now.
- 20:38Speaker 4: He's obviously focused on the NFL, but he does deserve it.
- 20:41Speaker 3: You're absolutely right.
- 20:41Speaker 5: We have an email in to the National Football Foundation.
- 20:44Speaker 5: They're going to get back to us today. We'll have
- 20:45Speaker 5: an update tomorrow. Case, if you're watching, which I know
- 20:47Speaker 5: he watches, stay tuned.
- 20:49Speaker 4: I have a Pabst and Perloff history trivia question for you.
- 20:52Speaker 4: Do you remember when we were down at the College
- 20:54Speaker 4: Football Hall of Fame, who joined us and did a
- 20:56Speaker 4: tour with us?
- 20:57Speaker 3: He's a Hall of Famer.
- 20:58Speaker 5: Oh, Dat Nguyen, linebacker, Texas A & M walk-off. Nice call, Perl.
- 21:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I didn't think you were going to get that.
- 21:04Speaker 5: He happened to be in the building that day.
- 21:05Speaker 3: Yeah, and he was a super nice guy. He would
- 21:08Speaker 3: hit you, man.
- 21:09Speaker 5: Oh, he could have killed both of us.
- 21:10Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely.
- 21:10Speaker 4: Okay, for my next warm take, going back to tonight's game,
- 21:15Speaker 4: the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 21:17Speaker 3: Steelers... Train a Joey Porter Jr. I don't get it.
- 21:21Speaker 3: The one player they need right now is Joey Porter Jr.
- 21:24Speaker 3: They're in a division with Zay Flowers, who's playing awesome
- 21:27Speaker 3: for Baltimore.
- 21:28Speaker 4: Obviously, they missed him tremendously against Jamar Chase last Sunday.
- 21:33Speaker 4: And then you got Denzel Boston on Cleveland, who looks
- 21:35Speaker 4: like the perfect guy for Joey Porter to cover. Now,
- 21:38Speaker 4: Porter's a bit polarizing because he gets a lot of penalties.
- 21:41Speaker 4: Two years ago, led the league. But the guy has
- 21:43Speaker 4: not allowed a touchdown since his first game. And that
- 21:47Speaker 4: was three years ago. He is a shutdown corner. You
- 21:51Speaker 4: look at different metrics for guys. He is way up there.
- 21:54Speaker 4: According to PFF, I believe he has the highest passer
- 21:58Speaker 4: rating against for a quarterback.
- 22:00Speaker 3: Or lowest. Actually, lowest. That would make more sense.
- 22:02Speaker 5: I think you're right.
- 22:03Speaker 3: Lowest. I think you want to be lowest. But he's
- 22:05Speaker 3: a very good lockup cornerback.
- 22:07Speaker 4: He is very physical, so he puts a lot of
- 22:09Speaker 4: pressure on the officials. That's not what Dallas necessarily needs
- 22:12Speaker 4: in their defense. They play a lot of zone in Dallas.
- 22:15Speaker 3: Pittsburgh.
- 22:15Speaker 4: They're so dependent on this guy. I guess they think
- 22:18Speaker 4: that we're 2-1 and we don't need him, but it
- 22:20Speaker 4: doesn't make sense to me because a second-round pick in
- 22:23Speaker 4: 2028 is not worth that much.
- 22:24Speaker 3: That's about a third-round pick next year.
- 22:26Speaker 5: So what are they doing? I think if I'm a
- 22:28Speaker 5: Steelers fan, I'm lightly bothered by this. You draft a guy,
- 22:30Speaker 5: he becomes really good, you pay him. It's kind of
- 22:33Speaker 5: what you want. Christian Gonzalez, the defensive back for the Patriots,
- 22:36Speaker 5: and he's fantastic. You've got to pay sometimes, and What
- 22:39Speaker 5: are you doing in the draft if you're not trying
- 22:40Speaker 5: to find a guy who you want to give a
- 22:42Speaker 5: second contract to?
- 22:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, the thing is, who are the Steelers
- 22:45Speaker 4: paying to? They just re-signed Nick Herbig and Darnell Washington.
- 22:49Speaker 5: They're not spending any money at the quarterback position.
- 22:51Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, they are spending in other spots, though. Yes.
- 22:55Speaker 4: But they also did re-sign Darnell Washington. That was going
- 22:58Speaker 4: to be my other warm take. He's my number one
- 23:00Speaker 4: favorite player in the NFL. The massive tight end for
- 23:03Speaker 4: the Steelers. Watch him tonight.
- 23:04Speaker 3: Honestly, Joey Porter Jr., I don't like this trade, but
- 23:07Speaker 3: if you.
- 23:07Speaker 4: Throw to Darnell Washington enough times, I would be happy.
- 23:11Speaker 4: It's like Ridge Perry playing tight end.
- 23:13Speaker 3: It's amazing.
- 23:14Speaker 5: He's a walking eclipse. You can't see behind the guy.
- 23:16Speaker 5: All right, coming up next, we talk to Mark Grant,
- 23:18Speaker 5: Padres broadcaster, also NBC sports broadcaster. Padres, a feel-good story,
- 23:23Speaker 5: great fans. Can they go on a run? We'll find
- 23:25Speaker 5: out next. Stick around.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Not so fast. Welcome back to Not So Fast. I'm
- 23:30Speaker 3: Andrew Perloff. He is Paul Paps, NBC Sports Now and Peacock.
- 23:35Speaker 4: And if you're watching, he looks like he's happy, but
- 23:37Speaker 4: we got a sad Cubs fan in the house.
- 23:40Speaker 5: Yeah, trying to keep my chin up, trying to be
- 23:41Speaker 5: a professional, but that was brutal.
- 23:43Speaker 3: You know what?
- 23:43Speaker 5: When your team lays an egg that big, it's like
- 23:46Speaker 5: it wasn't even close.
- 23:47Speaker 4: Yeah, last night the Padres beat the Cubs 4-1 to
- 23:50Speaker 4: finish off that series. And of course, now we're into
- 23:54Speaker 4: the Padres, so we had to talk to Padres broadcaster
- 23:57Speaker 4: Mark Grant is going to join us off the Padres
- 24:00Speaker 4: two-game sweep of the Cubs.
- 24:02Speaker 3: Mark, how you doing? How exciting was last night?
- 24:05Speaker 2: Oh, guys, it was unbelievable.
- 24:07Speaker 6: It was really electric downtown San Diego.
- 24:10Speaker 2: I was listening to you guys before you went to break.
- 24:14Speaker 6: 3.3 million fans clicking through the turnstiles this year, downtown
- 24:19Speaker 6: San Diego.
- 24:20Speaker 2: And last night, you're right.
- 24:22Speaker 6: It was like a college football event. Every seat was full.
- 24:26Speaker 6: A lot of times people were just out of their seats,
- 24:28Speaker 6: just having a great time, waving those gold towels.
- 24:31Speaker 2: I mean, it was a sight to be seen.
- 24:33Speaker 5: It was awesome. I want to get to the team
- 24:35Speaker 5: on the field, Mark, but I want to know the
- 24:36Speaker 5: kind of genesis of this because I was blown away
- 24:38Speaker 5: by the home crowd, by the Padres. I've seen Padres games,
- 24:41Speaker 5: but you know the postseason is different. Is this like
- 24:43Speaker 5: a 10-year build? The town loses the Chargers, and it's
- 24:46Speaker 5: very sad. I thought that was wrong. But it's like
- 24:49Speaker 5: we have this team. Let's support it all in. Great stadium.
- 24:52Speaker 5: They spent on some players. Is this like a 10-year
- 24:54Speaker 5: buildup to this level of fandom?
- 24:56Speaker 2: Yes, it's become like one of the things to do.
- 24:59Speaker 6: And when you talk about losing the Chargers, Paul and Andrew,
- 25:04Speaker 6: that was a big deal. I mean, I'll be honest,
- 25:06Speaker 6: with all the bad baseball through the years, I mean,
- 25:08Speaker 6: in 58 seasons, there's been a lot of bad baseball
- 25:10Speaker 6: in San Diego. So when the Chargers left, it was
- 25:14Speaker 6: like the only, you know, people were saying, oh, you know,
- 25:17Speaker 6: now San Diego's Portland.
- 25:18Speaker 2: You know, they have the Blazers. Well, you know, we only.
- 25:21Speaker 6: Have now the Padres. It was a Charger town. There's
- 25:24Speaker 6: no doubt about it. And when they left, it was like, okay,
- 25:27Speaker 6: Petco Park, and now it's the place to be. Now,
- 25:30Speaker 6: you know what happens. You feel the good team. You're
- 25:33Speaker 6: going to get some attendance. The people are going to
- 25:36Speaker 6: be excited. And there's always been the loyal Padre fans.
- 25:40Speaker 6: But everywhere we go, they travel well now.
- 25:43Speaker 2: You see the jerseys in every single seat.
- 25:45Speaker 6: I mean, when the Padres do well on the road,
- 25:48Speaker 6: I mean, there's like an eruption. It's not like just
- 25:50Speaker 6: two or three guys, oh, the Padres scored. They click
- 25:53Speaker 6: open a beer, and they go, oh, okay, yeah, whatever,
- 25:54Speaker 6: let's get to work. But, you know, it's great. The
- 25:57Speaker 6: whole thing now, it's become a thing downtown San Diego.
- 26:00Speaker 6: It's a great venue, of course.
- 26:01Speaker 4: Mark, full disclosure, I am a Phillies fan, so that
- 26:04Speaker 4: would inform this next question. You know, the Padres felt
- 26:07Speaker 4: like they had teams that were ready to go really
- 26:09Speaker 4: far but didn't make it. Watching these two games against
- 26:12Speaker 4: the Cubs, I said to myself, this might be different
- 26:15Speaker 4: this year.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Do you get that feeling?
- 26:17Speaker 2: Yes, Andrew. You know what? Everything is clicking.
- 26:19Speaker 6: When teams, and we all know this, when teams get
- 26:22Speaker 6: hot at the right time, that's the team you have
- 26:24Speaker 6: to be worried about. And it's like preseason football in
- 26:27Speaker 6: the NFL. You can throw all that stuff out the
- 26:29Speaker 6: window once the season starts. I think the same thing
- 26:32Speaker 6: with the postseason in baseball.
- 26:36Speaker 2: You're a fighting fan, and that's great.
- 26:38Speaker 6: And by the way, as a side note, from landing
- 26:43Speaker 6: to takeoff in Philly, soup to nuts, I love that town.
- 26:47Speaker 6: I love everything about it. I mean, I grew up
- 26:49Speaker 6: in Joliet, Illinois. I'm a White Sox fan now, but anyway,
- 26:54Speaker 6: I grew up a Cubs fan. That's a different story.
- 26:56Speaker 6: But it's been great, and it's just something to be seen.
- 27:00Speaker 2: It's great.
- 27:01Speaker 5: All right, Mark, let's get to some baseball. By the way,
- 27:03Speaker 5: I know you went to Joliet Catholic. I went to
- 27:04Speaker 5: Marion Catholic, not too far away.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Did you? Sure thing.
- 27:07Speaker 5: Oh, wow. I was like in seventh grade, and I
- 27:10Speaker 5: think I saw you play baseball because you were a stud.
- 27:12Speaker 5: Let's not kid each other at Joliet Catholic. I'm not kidding,
- 27:15Speaker 5: because you're about four years older than me, and you
- 27:17Speaker 5: were throwing some heat, buddy.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I remember going up to Chicago Heights.
- 27:22Speaker 5: Chicago Heights, Mary and Kathy, I think you blanked us.
- 27:25Speaker 6: Oh, well, you guys could hit the fastball, and that's
- 27:29Speaker 6: all I had.
- 27:30Speaker 5: You're a little wild. Let me ask you about a pitcher,
- 27:32Speaker 5: because the other day I was watching you on NBC
- 27:35Speaker 5: in the broadcast of the game, and I think Michael King,
- 27:38Speaker 5: the Padres' ace, is completely undercovered, underrated. He completely destroyed
- 27:43Speaker 5: the Cubs. You were talking about him, and you kind
- 27:45Speaker 5: of compared him. You said he's kind of like a professor.
- 27:47Speaker 5: He's a Tom Brady. He just lives to prepare for
- 27:49Speaker 5: the ballgames. How underrated is Michael King nationally?
- 27:53Speaker 2: Oh, under the radar.
- 27:56Speaker 6: He's got such great stuff. He's been the most consistent
- 27:58Speaker 6: starter for the Padres. And, you know, San Diego's the
- 28:01Speaker 6: type of market. They're making the name for themselves, obviously,
- 28:04Speaker 6: going deep into the playoffs, hopefully, and bringing the World
- 28:06Speaker 6: Series home. But Michael King's one of those guys that,
- 28:10Speaker 6: He's prepared as anybody. One of the luxuries we have, guys,
- 28:13Speaker 6: is you go into the clubhouse and you see guys,
- 28:16Speaker 6: how they interact with guys. And Michael couldn't be a
- 28:19Speaker 6: sweeter prince of a kid. But when it's game time
- 28:22Speaker 6: and it's getting prepared, he's got his little book. We
- 28:25Speaker 6: saw him on the bench looking at a book going
- 28:28Speaker 6: over hitters for the next inning. But he's prepared as anybody.
- 28:32Speaker 6: And when he is on his game like he was
- 28:35Speaker 6: right out of the gate, You know what you're going
- 28:37Speaker 6: to get from Michael King. And he answered like he
- 28:39Speaker 6: did against Atlanta that one time in the wild card
- 28:43Speaker 6: when he pitched at Petco a.
- 28:44Speaker 2: Couple years ago as well.
- 28:45Speaker 4: Okay, I want to make one thing clear. I don't
- 28:47Speaker 4: want any 85 Bears talk the rest of this interview.
- 28:49Speaker 4: I didn't realize I was talking to two Chicago guys.
- 28:51Speaker 4: No Ditka here. And I'm going to bring it back
- 28:54Speaker 4: to my hometown. What do you expect in Game 3, Phillies-Braves,
- 28:58Speaker 4: tonight at 8 o'clock NBC?
- 29:00Speaker 2: You know what, the Phillies... Even though, you know, Larry
- 29:03Speaker 2: Bowe and I are good friends.
- 29:04Speaker 6: Larry was my manager with the Padres back in 87,
- 29:07Speaker 6: and you should see some of the texts that go
- 29:09Speaker 6: back and forth.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Between he and I regarding the Phillies and the Padres.
- 29:13Speaker 6: But, you know, the Phillies are a team that always
- 29:16Speaker 6: concerned me and scare me. And even though they didn't
- 29:19Speaker 6: do well down the stretch, I mean, they got into
- 29:22Speaker 6: the playoffs, right? But they're always a team with that
- 29:24Speaker 6: lineup and with that pitching that always concerns me.
- 29:27Speaker 2: So I would not be surprised.
- 29:29Speaker 6: It would not be surprised if today the Phillies win
- 29:32Speaker 6: in Atlanta and advance.
- 29:34Speaker 2: It's just, once again, you can not do well. You
- 29:39Speaker 2: just get in.
- 29:39Speaker 6: By the skin of your teeth and then you hit
- 29:41Speaker 6: the playoffs and you get to that wildcard series and
- 29:43Speaker 6: you win a couple games and.
- 29:45Speaker 2: Next thing you know, you're on your way. But they're
- 29:47Speaker 2: always a team that concerns me.
- 29:48Speaker 5: All right, Mark, we're going to get you out of
- 29:49Speaker 5: here pretty soon. But I want to ask you two questions.
- 29:51Speaker 2: I want to stay.
- 29:51Speaker 5: I want to stay longer. I can chop it up
- 29:53Speaker 5: with you all day.
- 29:54Speaker 2: Hey, not so fast.
- 29:55Speaker 3: Not so fast.
- 29:56Speaker 5: You've always been a big fan of not so fast
- 29:58Speaker 5: for years. I mean, you played. Luckily, you got to
- 30:02Speaker 5: play with the Padres. You got to play with the
- 30:03Speaker 5: great Tony Gwynn. I always quote Tony Gwynn's stats. I'm
- 30:06Speaker 5: the biggest fan. And he had a season where he hit.
- 30:09Speaker 5: 394 and he had 19 strikeouts. If you had to
- 30:12Speaker 5: tell us one thing for those who don't realize how
- 30:14Speaker 5: great Tony Gwynn was, it would be what?
- 30:17Speaker 6: People don't realize that he was more proud of his
- 30:20Speaker 6: gold gloves than his batting titles.
- 30:23Speaker 2: How about that?
- 30:23Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 30:25Speaker 6: Tony, I could go on and on about Tony. And
- 30:27Speaker 6: another thing, too, I used to throw batting practice to him.
- 30:29Speaker 6: He would call the pitches out of my hand even
- 30:31Speaker 6: before the ball left my hand.
- 30:33Speaker 2: That's disheartening. Change up. Basketball. Yeah, he was remarkable.
- 30:38Speaker 5: Okay, last thing, and now you've got to go, but...
- 30:41Speaker 5: Tough break for the Cubs. Not a good season. I
- 30:44Speaker 5: sure wish Harry Carey was here to give his reaction.
- 30:47Speaker 2: Holy cow! Welcome, everybody, to Cubs baseball.
- 30:50Speaker 6: Once again, they need to find a trainer who knows
- 30:53Speaker 6: the Heimlich Maneuver.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Because right now, the Cubs... All my friends back home
- 30:58Speaker 2: in Chicago, I tell them my Cub fans are just
- 31:00Speaker 2: losing it right now. I can just imagine.
- 31:02Speaker 6: But holy cow! Now the Potteries are on the clock.
- 31:06Speaker 6: Now it's their chance to try to win a World Series.
- 31:09Speaker 6: What are the Cubs going to do now? Holy cow.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Thank you, Mark.
- 31:12Speaker 5: That was awesome.
- 31:13Speaker 3: Mark, thanks.
- 31:14Speaker 2: All right, guys. Andrew, Paulie, thank you so much.
- 31:16Speaker 3: Yeah, enjoy the rest of the postseason. Paul, that was
- 31:19Speaker 3: a treat.
- 31:19Speaker 5: That was a treat. Mark's a character. He's been with
- 31:21Speaker 5: the Padres for a long, long time. He does a
- 31:23Speaker 5: great Harry Carey, and he's a Southsider, but that was good.
- 31:26Speaker 5: And the Padres fans, they're becoming part of this story.
- 31:29Speaker 5: He talked about It's a town with the Padres and
- 31:32Speaker 5: not a lot else, a lot of stuff other than
- 31:34Speaker 5: sports to do, but the Padres are the focal point.
- 31:36Speaker 3: Really cool.
- 31:37Speaker 4: And so he's from Joliet High. That's Joliet Jake from
- 31:40Speaker 4: Blues Brothers.
- 31:41Speaker 5: Well, Joliet Catholic, if you remember the movie Rudy, that's
- 31:44Speaker 5: where Rudy went.
- 31:45Speaker 2: Oh, really?
- 31:46Speaker 5: Dan Rudiger went to Joliet Catholic. I went to Marion Catholic.
- 31:49Speaker 5: Big rivals.
- 31:50Speaker 4: And not to dive too much into Paul Pabst's history,
- 31:52Speaker 4: but who is the football player who went to marry
- 31:54Speaker 4: a Catholic, I.
- 31:55Speaker 3: Believe, with you?
- 31:56Speaker 5: Oh, there's a couple. Well, there's Rodney Harrison.
- 31:59Speaker 3: Rodney Harrison, who played in San Diego.
- 32:01Speaker 6: Yes.
- 32:01Speaker 5: He was younger than me, but Rodney Harrison.
- 32:03Speaker 3: We could have done that with Mark.
- 32:04Speaker 5: We could have chopped it up all day.
- 32:05Speaker 3: All right.
- 32:06Speaker 4: Well, I mean, we could have talked to him forever.
- 32:08Speaker 4: But coming up next, we got to get back to football.
- 32:11Speaker 2: J.J.
- 32:11Speaker 4: Watt was on the DP show and had a lot
- 32:14Speaker 4: of very interesting things to say, including some things about
- 32:17Speaker 4: our friend Paul Paps.
- 32:18Speaker 3: That's next. Not so fast.
- 32:23Speaker 2: How real are the Raiders?
- 32:26Speaker 8: This is where we find out. Um, I think that
- 32:29Speaker 8: the takeaways on defense.
- 32:30Speaker 2: Have been massive.
- 32:32Speaker 8: I mean, nine and three games is tough to sustain,
- 32:35Speaker 8: but it reminds me a lot of the bears last year.
- 32:38Speaker 2: And the, for the.
- 32:39Speaker 8: Longest time, you're like, can they keep us going? Can
- 32:41Speaker 8: they keep, and they did for a very long time,
- 32:43Speaker 8: but it did cover up some things. I think that,
- 32:46Speaker 8: that I think the defense is strong. I do think
- 32:48Speaker 8: the takeaways are huge. Um, I think that Kirk Cousins
- 32:52Speaker 8: is playing phenomenally well in Clint's offense. Three touchdowns, three
- 32:57Speaker 8: straight games. You do have to, and I know people
- 33:01Speaker 8: don't like this, but it's just the facts of the situation.
- 33:03Speaker 8: The opponents they've played are 1-8. And they now go
- 33:06Speaker 8: on a stretch where they have the hardest schedule in
- 33:09Speaker 8: football from weeks 4 to 11.
- 33:12Speaker 5: Back on Not So Fast, this is the Clip Joint
- 33:14Speaker 5: Paps and Perloff. That was our old buddy J.J. Watt
- 33:16Speaker 5: earlier on the Dan Patrick Show today. And I thought
- 33:18Speaker 5: it was really good perspective because The Raiders are a
- 33:21Speaker 5: likable story. It's a September story. But when you look
- 33:23Speaker 5: at the schedule, it's like now it gets real. And
- 33:25Speaker 5: is it cute? Can you run the ball in October?
- 33:28Speaker 5: Because you haven't yet.
- 33:29Speaker 4: Well, they do have my guy, Mike Washington Jr., who
- 33:32Speaker 4: finally broke out the other day.
- 33:33Speaker 5: He might be playing better than Ashton Genting.
- 33:35Speaker 4: Well, Ashton Genting is a great all-around back. He's a
- 33:37Speaker 4: great pass catcher. I kind of like that combo. I
- 33:40Speaker 4: have a take on the Raiders later in the show.
- 33:42Speaker 4: But can you keep Kirk Cousins upright? And that turnover
- 33:45Speaker 4: stat is so interesting, too, because you're right.
- 33:47Speaker 3: It's the Bears. You can look at it. They have
- 33:49Speaker 3: nine turnovers.
- 33:50Speaker 4: Turnovers tend to go back to the median, so that
- 33:52Speaker 4: will go away, but then it doesn't always go away.
- 33:54Speaker 5: Yeah, I think also long-term, short-term. We talked about this
- 33:57Speaker 5: a month ago on Not So Fast. What do you
- 33:59Speaker 5: do with Mendoza? Do you start him early, start him late?
- 34:01Speaker 5: Now they're in a position where they don't have to
- 34:03Speaker 5: play him for the first half of the season because
- 34:05Speaker 5: they're doing well.
- 34:06Speaker 4: It's like a double good thing. Well, it could go
- 34:08Speaker 4: full Patrick Mahomes. It's him the whole season.
- 34:10Speaker 3: But actually, what J.J.
- 34:11Speaker 4: Said that really caught my attention was he had a
- 34:14Speaker 4: wardrobe comment on one of the Danettes.
- 34:16Speaker 3: Let's hear what J.J. Watt had to say about Paulie.
- 34:20Speaker 8: Can I see a shot of Paulie quick? Because the
- 34:23Speaker 8: shirt he was wearing today, when I flipped this on
- 34:25Speaker 8: and I saw Paulie's shirt, to me, it looked like
- 34:27Speaker 8: he might have been going dancing in a nightclub.
- 34:30Speaker 5: After the show.
- 34:31Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 34:31Speaker 1: Paulie's on this kick of unbuttoning a button that you
- 34:35Speaker 1: probably don't normally do it when you're married.
- 34:37Speaker 2: With a couple of kids. But Paul is going for
- 34:40Speaker 2: a look here.
- 34:41Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't want to go school teacher buttoned up,
- 34:43Speaker 5: but I don't have a middle ground, and I have
- 34:45Speaker 5: no chest hair whatsoever, JJ.
- 34:47Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 34:48Speaker 8: Yeah, but I mean, you look like you could head
- 34:50Speaker 8: directly out to Miami, to a nice night.
- 34:54Speaker 2: Yeah. Thank you.
- 34:56Speaker 5: That's just a man who knows football and fashion, not
- 34:58Speaker 5: necessarily in that order, Perloff.
- 35:00Speaker 3: I don't know. I couldn't tell if this was a
- 35:01Speaker 3: compliment or he was making fun of you.
- 35:03Speaker 5: Well, now the shirt is dark blue, not black. I
- 35:05Speaker 5: don't wear black shirts, but like. J.J., I think there
- 35:08Speaker 5: was just a 10% compliment in there somewhere.
- 35:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I didn't really see that. I didn't see that.
- 35:14Speaker 5: Now, it's the same size he would wear. He would
- 35:16Speaker 5: wear a large or a medium. Now, he's 70 pounds heavier.
- 35:19Speaker 3: You know, it depends on the TV screen because it
- 35:21Speaker 3: does look a little black. Right.
- 35:22Speaker 4: I've been having that issue myself because I see you
- 35:24Speaker 4: in real life. I can confirm for the audience that
- 35:26Speaker 4: is navy black. But you're flirting with black and you
- 35:28Speaker 4: can't really wear black shirts around.
- 35:30Speaker 5: You sure can't. Not around here. But you know what?
- 35:32Speaker 5: Chest up, chest down. We'll do whatever we can here
- 35:34Speaker 5: to get the ladies to watch the show.
- 35:36Speaker 3: Yeah. By the way, does J.J. Watt watch regularly? I
- 35:38Speaker 3: know you know this answer. You know J.J. pretty well.
- 35:40Speaker 5: Does he watch the Dan Patrick show or our show regularly?
- 35:45Speaker 3: Don't answer that second question. I meant the first one.
- 35:48Speaker 5: In all seriousness, no. He will text. He will text Dan.
- 35:51Speaker 5: He will text Fritzy. He will text me during the
- 35:53Speaker 5: Dan Patrick show if he's bothered by something. We were
- 35:55Speaker 5: talking about Aaron Donald, how could he come back and
- 35:58Speaker 5: how would he be used?
- 36:00Speaker 2: J.J.
- 36:00Speaker 5: Texted and said, I can't come on today, but here's
- 36:03Speaker 5: some thoughts. So it's nice that he knows the show
- 36:06Speaker 5: and kind of can chop.
- 36:06Speaker 2: It up with us.
- 36:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I could have listened to Dan and J.J. chop
- 36:09Speaker 4: it up for about an hour, but that was awesome.
- 36:11Speaker 5: All right, let's get to a quarterback situation in Chicago
- 36:13Speaker 5: that hasn't been resolved yet. Head coach Ben Johnson of
- 36:16Speaker 5: the Bears, he's got good problems, I guess. Caleb Williams
- 36:19Speaker 5: appears to be out with a hamstring. Tyson Bajent was
- 36:22Speaker 5: in the concussion protocol, now out. And then Case Keenum
- 36:25Speaker 5: plays lights out on Monday Night Football. Ben Johnson, he's coy.
- 36:31Speaker 6: Yeah, we've got three guys, and we'll kind of work
- 36:34Speaker 6: through the week and see where they're at.
- 36:36Speaker 7: What would be the factors?
- 36:38Speaker 2: One direction or another.
- 36:41Speaker 3: Whoever we feel like gives us the best chance to win.
- 36:43Speaker 7: I'm going to take the last swing at this quarterback thing.
- 36:45Speaker 7: There's obviously some competitive incentive to you being up here.
- 36:48Speaker 7: How do you, on a short week, create the directions
- 36:52Speaker 7: in the quarterback's room just so that those guys make
- 36:54Speaker 7: use of every second that they've.
- 36:56Speaker 2: Got between them. The direction's already been made, so we'll
- 37:00Speaker 2: be in good shape for Sunday.
- 37:03Speaker 3: Best coach in the NFL, maybe? He's awesome.
- 37:06Speaker 5: That is fantastic coach speak. I like how they took
- 37:08Speaker 5: multiple shots at Ben Johnson as if he'd go, you
- 37:11Speaker 5: know what? You got me. I'll tell you, it's Keenum.
- 37:13Speaker 5: I'm just going to let you know it's Keenum.
- 37:15Speaker 4: You know, Ben Johnson looks less tired this year. Last
- 37:17Speaker 4: year he looked bedraggled every week. Now he looks like
- 37:19Speaker 4: he's in total control. He is feeling himself because the
- 37:22Speaker 4: criticism of him was that he had only won games
- 37:25Speaker 4: with number one overall picks, Jared Goff and Caleb Williams.
- 37:28Speaker 4: Now he has an undrafted free agent out of the
- 37:31Speaker 4: University of Houston, as we know, who won a game.
- 37:34Speaker 4: So Ben Johnson had almost as big a week as
- 37:36Speaker 4: Case Keenum in a weird way.
- 37:37Speaker 5: Well, let's chop this up for a second because I
- 37:39Speaker 5: see both sides of this. Case Keenum, you would think,
- 37:42Speaker 5: you stay with the hot hand, the veteran playing well
- 37:44Speaker 5: against the Jets. But I wonder if Ben Johnson is like,
- 37:48Speaker 5: you know, you don't lose your job due to injury,
- 37:50Speaker 5: and Tyson Bajent would have been the starter in that game.
- 37:53Speaker 5: Maybe he's a bigger part of the Bears' future, and
- 37:55Speaker 5: you may say, I can go to Tyson Bajent, and
- 37:57Speaker 5: I have a great backup plan with Casey. I'm not
- 37:59Speaker 5: saying you should do that, but I wonder if that's
- 38:01Speaker 5: what they're thinking.
- 38:02Speaker 4: Well, the upcoming opponent, the Jets, is a tricky one
- 38:05Speaker 4: because Aaron Glenn can play some good defense at times.
- 38:08Speaker 3: I know the Jets aren't a good team, but their
- 38:09Speaker 3: defense can be confusing.
- 38:11Speaker 4: I would obviously go Case Keenum because you have to
- 38:15Speaker 4: let him go on a heater.
- 38:16Speaker 3: You can't stop a guy in the middle of a heater.
- 38:18Speaker 5: Would you worry at all about the fan reaction if
- 38:20Speaker 5: you didn't start Keenum, started Bajent, he plays subpar, and
- 38:24Speaker 5: you lose?
- 38:25Speaker 3: Well, I don't know. I mean, you're a Chicago guy.
- 38:27Speaker 3: It doesn't strike me as, it's not a Philadelphia fan base.
- 38:30Speaker 3: I feel like it's a little Midwestern. They would maybe understand.
- 38:33Speaker 5: Yeah, this is a very weird position to be in.
- 38:35Speaker 5: I could speak for Bears fans here. They've had three
- 38:37Speaker 5: good quarterbacks in the first hundred years of the franchise.
- 38:39Speaker 5: They currently have three good quarterbacks on the roster. And
- 38:42Speaker 5: the Bears fans like all three. They think Bajan is
- 38:45Speaker 5: a high-end backup. They think Case can walk on water
- 38:48Speaker 5: this week. And, of course, Caleb Williams runs the city.
- 38:51Speaker 3: Well, that's funny.
- 38:52Speaker 4: We were talking Bajan versus Keenum. Caleb Williams is still
- 38:55Speaker 4: looming out there. I think he only sat out a
- 38:57Speaker 4: week because he was embarrassed because he yelled too loud
- 38:59Speaker 4: after his hamstring injury. So he might be just fine. And,
- 39:02Speaker 4: by the way, you don't need a Hall of Famer
- 39:04Speaker 4: to beat the Jets. You just need competent quarterback play.
- 39:08Speaker 4: I would go with Keenum, rest Caleb a little longer.
- 39:10Speaker 4: Because you don't know how Bajan had a bad concussion.
- 39:14Speaker 4: He hasn't played really a lot of meaningful football. Why
- 39:17Speaker 4: not just the safest course to me seems best.
- 39:19Speaker 5: It does seem simple, safe, and there's a lot more
- 39:21Speaker 5: upside with Keenum in week two.
- 39:23Speaker 2: Yep. All right.
- 39:23Speaker 3: Let's stay in Chicago for our next clip.
- 39:25Speaker 4: This is White Sox Murakami and Vassil on clinching the
- 39:29Speaker 4: ADLS spot.
- 39:33Speaker 3: Mooney, Kenzo, this is your second time in one of these.
- 39:36Speaker 3: What'd you learn from your first one?
- 39:41Speaker 5: No, I'm drunk.
- 39:45Speaker 6: Oh my God.
- 39:46Speaker 5: You guys came in here with a mission. You knew
- 39:48Speaker 5: you could do this against the Houston Astros. How does
- 39:51Speaker 5: it feel to have finally done it?
- 39:52Speaker 2: How does it feel to watch all you guys celebrate?
- 39:54Speaker 4: 100.
- 39:54Speaker 3: Oh my God.
- 39:55Speaker 5: I feel so good. Mike, your thoughts about going to Cleveland.
- 39:56Speaker 5: My thoughts about going to Cleveland?
- 39:58Speaker 2: That's right, sir.
- 40:12Speaker 6: Well, what we're going to do, we're going to get
- 40:13Speaker 6: on a plane and we're going to head to Cleveland, Ohio.
- 40:16Speaker 2: Somebody's pouring alcohol down my pants.
- 40:19Speaker 3: Sure.
- 40:19Speaker 6: And what we're going to do is we're going to
- 40:20Speaker 6: show up, play White Sox baseball, and we're going to
- 40:23Speaker 6: kick some ass.
- 40:24Speaker 3: All right, Mike, go get them. Oh, yeah, come on.
- 40:28Speaker 5: That is awesome. That's where they deserve to party like that.
- 40:32Speaker 5: It's been 20 years.
- 40:33Speaker 3: Right, because of the White Sox. Exactly. If another team
- 40:36Speaker 3: did that, if the Yankees did that, I would rip
- 40:38Speaker 3: them to shreds.
- 40:38Speaker 5: And Murakami, he's becoming, he's a very good player, but
- 40:41Speaker 5: he's becoming a star because of his celebration. And his
- 40:43Speaker 5: translator is becoming a star as well.
- 40:45Speaker 4: Can you imagine if a team in the NFL celebrated
- 40:48Speaker 4: a wild card win like that, you'd be like, what
- 40:49Speaker 4: on earth are you doing? You have a game coming
- 40:51Speaker 4: up in five days. It says so much about baseball
- 40:54Speaker 4: to me because baseball, don't tell me about fitness and baseball.
- 40:56Speaker 3: Those guys are drinking their face off, and they have
- 40:58Speaker 3: ALDS coming up.
- 41:00Speaker 5: Yes, you would get crushed in football if you did that.
- 41:01Speaker 5: All right, it's time for the rando, something rando we saw.
- 41:04Speaker 5: We're going to stick with baseball. Check this one out.
- 41:06Speaker 5: The Braves maybe only have one more home game, but
- 41:09Speaker 5: look at this hammer. It's called the Long Ball Sandwich.
- 41:12Speaker 5: Spiced beef, sausage, bourbon mustard, onions. bacon jam, Carolina barbecue sauce,
- 41:17Speaker 5: don't sleep on that, smoked cheddar, pickled green tomatoes, only
- 41:21Speaker 5: public service announcements in section 156, Pearl. Only one spot
- 41:25Speaker 5: in the stadium you can get that.
- 41:26Speaker 3: And how do you bring it to your seat and
- 41:28Speaker 3: eat it?
- 41:29Speaker 5: It's two feet long. It's brought to you. We did
- 41:31Speaker 5: some research. Oh, okay. The Not So Fasters did some
- 41:33Speaker 5: research on this. It's brought to you in the sweet area.
- 41:36Speaker 5: They chop it up and give you plates so you
- 41:38Speaker 5: can just hammer down this sandwich.
- 41:39Speaker 3: That sounds amazing, but sweet area sounds kind of fancy.
- 41:42Speaker 2: A little bougie, a little bougie.
- 41:43Speaker 5: Coming up next, we've got a lot coming up. the conservative,
- 41:46Speaker 5: and also Superloftips. Superloftips are back. Can't wait. Stick around.
- 41:51Speaker 5: Not so fast.
- 41:53Speaker 3: Welcome back to Not So Fast. I'm Perloff. He is Paps.
- 41:56Speaker 3: You know him. You love him. It is time for Superloftips.
- 42:00Speaker 5: Waiting all week for these, Perl.
- 42:02Speaker 2: Yes.
- 42:02Speaker 4: I call them the Indomitian Superloftips. My best and worst
- 42:06Speaker 4: of the NFL. We're going to start with the best
- 42:10Speaker 4: 0-3 team. Paul, I am choosing, no big surprise, the
- 42:15Speaker 4: Houston Texans. And let me tell you why. I think
- 42:18Speaker 4: they're still good. Tough game against Dallas this weekend.
- 42:20Speaker 3: But C.J. Stroud looks fine. Is he great?
- 42:24Speaker 4: No. Does he need to be great? Absolutely not. But
- 42:27Speaker 4: last year in the playoffs, he threw one touchdown and
- 42:29Speaker 4: five picks. So far this season, three touchdowns.
- 42:32Speaker 3: No picks.
- 42:33Speaker 4: He's given the exact kind of adequate play they need.
- 42:37Speaker 4: to let the defense win the games. Now, I don't
- 42:39Speaker 4: know what happened. Week one, Josh Allen's legs were a
- 42:41Speaker 4: massive problem. But they actually looked great against Cincinnati in
- 42:44Speaker 4: week two. And then they looked fine against Indianapolis. Indianapolis
- 42:48Speaker 4: is not a terrible team. I think Houston is just fine.
- 42:51Speaker 3: I think C.J.
- 42:51Speaker 4: Stroud did not forget how to play football. I will
- 42:54Speaker 4: take this level of C.J.
- 42:55Speaker 3: Stroud.
- 42:56Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it's a good bandwagon to get on
- 42:57Speaker 5: because everyone bailed on them.
- 42:59Speaker 3: C.J.
- 42:59Speaker 5: Stroud in the playoffs last year was It was bad.
- 43:01Speaker 3: Brutal.
- 43:01Speaker 5: And when they limp into the season defensively, everyone bailed.
- 43:04Speaker 3: Everybody bailed.
- 43:05Speaker 5: What's next?
- 43:05Speaker 3: Oh, okay. Now I have my worst 3-0 team.
- 43:09Speaker 4: This sounds really mean, especially after J.J.
- 43:11Speaker 3: Watt just praised them. I'm sorry.
- 43:13Speaker 4: The Las Vegas Raiders played nobody. Their opponents are 1-5
- 43:18Speaker 4: on the season. It gets much tougher, starting, obviously, with
- 43:21Speaker 4: KC this week.
- 43:23Speaker 3: The nine turnovers. Awesome. I'm so happy for them.
- 43:27Speaker 4: There's no way they sustained, especially against these quality offenses.
- 43:31Speaker 3: I forget New England, but they have the Bills, the Rams,
- 43:34Speaker 3: the Niners.
- 43:35Speaker 4: The Raiders are coming back to earth, and it's not
- 43:37Speaker 4: even a massive critique. It's just we're going to see
- 43:40Speaker 4: where they really belong, which is not a 14-3 team.
- 43:44Speaker 3: That 3-0 is a total barrage.
- 43:45Speaker 5: You know what I'm weirdly looking forward to? You know
- 43:47Speaker 5: I like awkward quarterback situations. What if they play a
- 43:50Speaker 5: little better than you think and they maybe get nine
- 43:53Speaker 5: wins and maybe just on the cusp of the playoffs?
- 43:55Speaker 5: What do you do about Kirk Cousins? And maybe not
- 43:57Speaker 5: with them, but Kirk Cousins plays another year somewhere else.
- 44:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I was going to say, you wave bye-bye and
- 44:02Speaker 4: wish him luck. Again, Patrick Mahomes, Alex Smith. The Chiefs
- 44:05Speaker 4: said goodbye to Alex Smith and had no problem with it.
- 44:08Speaker 4: And also, watching Mendoza in the preseason, he's not ready
- 44:10Speaker 4: to go.
- 44:10Speaker 3: Okay, now I have my most confusing 3-0 or 0-3 team.
- 44:14Speaker 3: Love it.
- 44:15Speaker 4: Most confusing, no doubt about it, the Los Angeles Chargers.
- 44:18Speaker 4: And I'll tell you why they confuse me, Paul. Last week,
- 44:21Speaker 4: we talked a lot about the Chargers-Bills game. You predicted
- 44:24Speaker 4: the Chargers would win, and it was a good prediction
- 44:26Speaker 4: because they were up 10-0. They were outplaying Buffalo in
- 44:29Speaker 4: every aspect of the game, led the game again in
- 44:31Speaker 4: the third quarter.
- 44:32Speaker 3: But somehow... The Chargers find a way to lose. I
- 44:36Speaker 3: cannot wrap my head around it.
- 44:37Speaker 4: I know Justin Herbert is great at football, but for
- 44:40Speaker 4: some reason it is not happening.
- 44:42Speaker 3: I think his receiver, Quentin Johnson, screwed him pretty bad
- 44:45Speaker 3: last week.
- 44:46Speaker 4: Oh, this drop right here. This was terrible. Again, oh no,
- 44:51Speaker 4: not that drop. He had another drop on a key
- 44:52Speaker 4: third down.
- 44:53Speaker 3: Why are the Chargers not better? They're the most confusing
- 44:56Speaker 3: 0-3 team by far.
- 44:57Speaker 5: And I don't think it's going to get better. I
- 44:59Speaker 5: think they play to the level of their opponents. And
- 45:01Speaker 5: you look at their schedule. Seattle, that's not going to
- 45:03Speaker 5: work out. And then if you look at later in
- 45:05Speaker 5: the season, they had the Jets, and then they had
- 45:07Speaker 5: the Dolphins. I worry about games like that because they
- 45:09Speaker 5: like big eggs, the Chargers.
- 45:11Speaker 4: I don't think this 0-3 thing is going to last.
- 45:13Speaker 4: I think that they come back towards the middle. That's
- 45:15Speaker 4: why I find them competing.
- 45:16Speaker 5: Keep it friendly. I'll make you a bet. At Thanksgiving,
- 45:19Speaker 5: the Chargers are under. 500.
- 45:21Speaker 3: Thanksgiving. I was about to say, I think they finished
- 45:23Speaker 3: 8-9 for the season. They're 0-3, Paul. What kind of
- 45:25Speaker 3: bet is that?
- 45:26Speaker 5: I know math.
- 45:27Speaker 3: I'm not betting an 0-3 team is going to be.
- 45:29Speaker 5: 500 points Thanksgiving. I was trying to take advantage of you.
- 45:31Speaker 5: The Phillies are making you upset. I was trying to
- 45:33Speaker 5: take advantage of your little side bet.
- 45:34Speaker 3: All right, it's time.
- 45:35Speaker 5: Those are good superlatives, Pearl.
- 45:36Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 45:37Speaker 5: Constructive criticism time. We don't know what's coming. They'll choose
- 45:39Speaker 5: it back there. Let's see what they got for us.
- 45:42Speaker 5: Here's our constructive criticism. Here's the first one.
- 45:44Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 45:45Speaker 5: Oh, this is a post from me.
- 45:46Speaker 3: Okay.
- 45:47Speaker 2: Okay.
- 45:48Speaker 5: Trying to think of a reason not to buy this.
- 45:49Speaker 5: None come to mind. That is a early 80s El Camino,
- 45:53Speaker 5: and it's gorge. Pearl, I would love to buy this.
- 45:56Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't understand where you are going to put
- 45:58Speaker 4: all these cars, because every time I'm out with you,
- 46:00Speaker 4: you'll see an old Wagoneer. Oh, man, I need to
- 46:04Speaker 4: buy that. You're obsessed with sort of 80s cars and fashion.
- 46:08Speaker 5: Yeah, and the color's great. It's two-tone. It's brown and tan,
- 46:11Speaker 5: kind of Padres colors.
- 46:12Speaker 2: It's gorgeous.
- 46:13Speaker 5: If you don't, I will. Large from Barstool, our good
- 46:15Speaker 5: buddy Large.
- 46:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 46:17Speaker 5: Go for it, Large. Maybe we could do a sharing situation.
- 46:19Speaker 4: This isn't really a question for Large or for even you.
- 46:22Speaker 4: How does your wife feel about your obsession with these
- 46:24Speaker 4: old cars?
- 46:25Speaker 5: She is giving up. She does not fight it anymore.
- 46:28Speaker 5: I just take her on a vacation and then buy
- 46:30Speaker 5: some junky old car. If you're not the coolest person
- 46:33Speaker 5: on your street, it's all I've got.
- 46:35Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 46:36Speaker 5: I'd be by far the coolest person on any street,
- 46:38Speaker 5: whatever street you got.
- 46:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I've been actually in a truck with you that
- 46:42Speaker 4: was really cool, but it did not function properly at
- 46:44Speaker 4: a certain point.
- 46:45Speaker 5: I'd rather look good than be able to drive down
- 46:46Speaker 5: the street.
- 46:47Speaker 3: Yeah, we were pushing it up a hill in Vermont.
- 46:48Speaker 5: We'll keep an eye on that story, but let's get
- 46:50Speaker 5: to the feel good. It's going to be Padres related
- 46:53Speaker 5: because nothing feels more than them. Here we go.
- 47:00Speaker 3: I don't think this is going to go well for
- 47:01Speaker 3: your Cubs ball.
- 47:02Speaker 2: Thanks for that.
- 47:11Speaker 3: Yep, I was right.
- 47:12Speaker 5: That is Gavin Sheets. They're chanting his name, chanting his name,
- 47:16Speaker 5: thousands of people, and he parks one and looks back
- 47:19Speaker 5: to the crowd.
- 47:21Speaker 3: That has to talk about feel good.
- 47:23Speaker 4: Can you imagine the adrenaline of hitting a home run
- 47:26Speaker 4: in front of that crowd in the playoffs?
- 47:28Speaker 3: Amazing.
- 47:28Speaker 5: Great crowd. We keep talking about it. Bonus coverage for
- 47:31Speaker 5: the feel good. Our friend John Fant of NBC Sports
- 47:33Speaker 5: hung out, when I say hung out, got doused by
- 47:36Speaker 5: Fernando Tentis after the game. Thank you. Everything that happens
- 47:40Speaker 5: over here is because of them.
- 47:42Speaker 2: The energy that they bring.
- 47:43Speaker 5: The fans are the best, man, and they're off the chart.
- 47:46Speaker 5: What I have done for this city, man, we definitely
- 47:49Speaker 5: want to bring it for them because they deserve it.
- 47:51Speaker 2: Congrats.
- 47:52Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 47:55Speaker 2: Oh, I was going to say John's too dry.
- 48:01Speaker 5: You know, Fanta, that slicker's not protecting that blazer, that
- 48:04Speaker 5: Natalie tired blazer you had there. And that wool jacket,
- 48:08Speaker 5: what is Fanta thinking?
- 48:09Speaker 4: No, he was just asking to get poured on it.
- 48:11Speaker 4: But I've got to be honest, it looked like he
- 48:12Speaker 4: was having a great time regardless.
- 48:14Speaker 5: Yeah, I did have this happen. In 1999, I got
- 48:16Speaker 5: to work the World Series. And after the Yankees won,
- 48:19Speaker 5: I waited and waited and got a little bit of
- 48:21Speaker 5: sound from Roger Clemens. He was all by himself. And
- 48:23Speaker 5: I was very excited. And I said, thanks. And then
- 48:25Speaker 5: he just dumped champagne all over my head. It was
- 48:28Speaker 5: one of the best of all time.
- 48:29Speaker 3: Was it on camera?
- 48:29Speaker 5: Not at all.
- 48:30Speaker 3: Oh. Not like Tim Carver and Dion.
- 48:32Speaker 5: Not at all. But it was in a nice way,
- 48:34Speaker 5: Roger Clemens.
- 48:35Speaker 3: Oh!
- 48:36Speaker 5: Yeah, he was actually like, hey, man, and he poured
- 48:38Speaker 5: it right on my head.
- 48:38Speaker 3: But you thought it was in a nice way.
- 48:39Speaker 5: Tune in to the Dan Patchow tomorrow on NBC Sports
- 48:41Speaker 5: Network and NBC Sports Now. Then hang with us after
- 48:44Speaker 5: the baseball.
- 48:45Speaker 2: That's it.
- 48:46Speaker 5: Phillies, let's go.
