- 0:01Hello and welcome to Off the Shelf with Phil and Dave, the
- 0:06movie talk Show. Each week, one of us takes the
- 0:07movie off our show, presented to the other and discusses it at
- 0:10length. Except one day a year, we block
- 0:23out a little bit of time and we go over the previous year's
- 0:25movies and something we call the shelfies.
- 0:29I don't think we've ever called that.
- 0:31It's starting now. We thought Six Season deserves a
- 0:33rebranding. That's I love it.
- 0:35Yeah. So here we are.
- 0:36David. Welcome back to the.
- 0:37Couch, thank you. To the country, appreciate it,
- 0:39did a little traveling. I made it back.
- 0:41Did you happen to find any love in your travels?
- 0:46You're referring to our episode of Love Actually.
- 0:48You did anticipate. You're going to check on it.
- 0:50You're right. I did forget for the first
- 0:53couple of airports, but. One of them Heathrow, because
- 0:56that was. No, was not in Heathrow, thank
- 0:59God. Luckily, I had many
- 1:01opportunities. Total of eight trips.
- 1:03Sure, let me lay it out for you. Please let me lay it.
- 1:05It's been waiting three weeks for.
- 1:07This I'm sure it went from Ottawa to Vancouver.
- 1:11Beautiful from YVR. Let me see your fingers.
- 1:14Come on. Oh, yeah.
- 1:15Here we go. YVR.
- 1:16Yeah, yeah. Vancouver to Auckland, New
- 1:18Zealand. Very good, Phillip.
- 1:19You know your geography. Auckland to Sydney.
- 1:22OK, there we go, Nova Scotia. There is there is a Sydney there
- 1:27isn't there? Then Sydney to Melbourne.
- 1:29Gotcha. OK, Melbourne to Auckland.
- 1:32Back to New Zealand. Very good.
- 1:33But you're, you're sharp today. And then Auckland to Vancouver.
- 1:38OK, back to YVR. Yeah.
- 1:41Yes, he worked at the airport. He wants everyone to know.
- 1:44And. Lived in, believe that and then
- 1:47of course Vancouver and Ottawa. Yeah, alright, that's 7.
- 1:51Yeah, yes. So I had 7 opportunities and I
- 1:54looked around. I hunted.
- 1:56You sought looking for enough. Not for myself.
- 1:59I was with my lovely wife. Yeah, it has been love there for
- 2:01a long time. It's just chemicals, right?
- 2:06And confide. It there was no love, no love.
- 2:08Airport very limited Christmas time.
- 2:10There was 1 moment. I'll get to it at the end.
- 2:11OK this is what I did see. There was a lot of Asians.
- 2:14OK. A lot of people on their cell
- 2:16phones. Hmm, OK, that's another thing.
- 2:18And then there's always that one person that you think is going
- 2:21to bring down the plane. I don't know, just the way he
- 2:24looks, it's the colour of the backpack.
- 2:27Colour of their skin maybe? No, no.
- 2:29Philip ironically allowed the murder, same as me.
- 2:32OK. The ones who had the neck
- 2:36pillow, though. Yeah, you're fine.
- 2:38It's safe and sound. If you're gonna have a nap on
- 2:39the plane, I don't think you're gonna bring it down.
- 2:41OK? You gotta run a real tight
- 2:43schedule, but there's always somebody's like, yeah, it's him,
- 2:46this is the guy, that guy, sure all going down because of him
- 2:49and that's it. Very limited love.
- 2:51And then when I was actually on, I think the second last.
- 2:54Flight the long one this is now. The big hall, Auckland to
- 2:58Vancouver, correct And there is this one guy who did the turn
- 3:02around and was talking to the row behind him You know what you
- 3:07know what I'm talking about here and he's got the arms on top of
- 3:10the seat and he's. He's having a great.
- 3:12Time. He's having a great time.
- 3:13He's constantly smiling and laughing.
- 3:16I fucking hated it. Really, really get on my nerves.
- 3:19Gonna be hard to find love with. That's your approach to people.
- 3:22The look on his face of joy and happiness just really irked me.
- 3:25Yeah, OK. And at first I thought the guy
- 3:27that was right in front of him, that who's behind him, wasn't
- 3:30with him. I'm like, dude, you're in my
- 3:33space, but where are you in this equation?
- 3:35I'm about 3 rows. He's in your space, 3 rows back.
- 3:39Yeah, well, he's not my space. He's just too much.
- 3:43But it turns out the person who is closest to him, who looked
- 3:46completely disengaged, so I thought he wasn't part of the
- 3:49party, but he was part of the party.
- 3:51OK, But if I'd been that person, like, dude.
- 3:54Oh yeah, they come. On you think you would be doing
- 3:56that though, if he didn't know the person behind well, that's I
- 3:58mean. Really.
- 3:59Yeah, once I realized that it was less of an Erk, but I know
- 4:03this is that grin. On his face, too much happening,
- 4:05too much happiness. This is this is bleeds a lot
- 4:08into your soul. And I think anyone that's
- 4:10listening to the last three or 4 episodes, we've released your
- 4:13disdain for Christmas, your disdain for love, It's a lot of
- 4:18disdain. All this guy was doing was
- 4:20talking to his friend and smiling about it and you're
- 4:24enraged? Is I'm just trying to mind my
- 4:28own business and watch Bosch. You brought Bosch, I brought
- 4:31Bosh, Bosh, Bosh on the floor. You have to bring a comfort
- 4:34show. Yeah, OK for such a long
- 4:36journey. You obviously have been on many
- 4:38flights. Many, many, many.
- 4:39Flights, I noticed they finally got rid of the cigarette lights.
- 4:43They got tired of replacing the bulb and they said, you know,
- 4:47we're just get rid of it and just let you know not to do.
- 4:49It interesting, yeah, I haven't seen any new new configuration
- 4:52like that, yeah. It's just the seat belt one now,
- 4:54OK. And the screens on Air Canada
- 4:58are a lot smaller than Air New Zealand.
- 4:59Hmm, the IFE right Inflight entertainment.
- 5:04Correct. And another comfort show of mine
- 5:07is Big Bang Theory. OK, I only watch it on the plane
- 5:10now. OK, last time I went they had
- 5:12season 4 or season 8, I forget. This one was season 3 from
- 5:16Ottawa to Vancouver. Gotcha.
- 5:18And then season 11 for the long haul.
- 5:20Interesting. So I went through it all,
- 5:22obviously and then I dipped into Bosch.
- 5:25That was my backup. Sure, this is all preloaded.
- 5:27They didn't. Bring your I preloaded the boss
- 5:30on my phone. Sorry, I can't trust them to
- 5:32have. Bosh on there, No Big Bang?
- 5:34Yes. Yeah, that I knew from my last
- 5:36trip on the way back. It was the same seasons.
- 5:40Then the flight from Vancouver to Ottawa was literally the same
- 5:43plane. I guess they do that.
- 5:45Yeah. Yeah, you know.
- 5:46Yeah, sure, sometimes they'll do it back and.
- 5:48Forth and my dad told me this because he's tracking it.
- 5:50He's a tracker. Yeah, he's got his tail numbers.
- 5:53He's all wrapped up. And like, well, that sucks
- 5:55because on that plane is season 11 of Big Bang and I've gone
- 5:59through season 11. So they really need to give you
- 6:02more seasons on the plane. That's fair.
- 6:04Long story short. Strangely, they put these things
- 6:07and it is often just some random yeah, season of a show and not
- 6:11even the whole series. Sometimes they don't do the
- 6:12whole season. Yeah, I flew once and it had
- 6:14West Wing and I was like, oh, that's exciting.
- 6:16And there were three episodes of Season 2.
- 6:19Yeah, what am I gonna do? With What are you gonna do?
- 6:21My second flight was 14. Hours.
- 6:24That's why you come with the tablet all loaded up.
- 6:27Movies perhaps would have been a good idea to watch.
- 6:30I fired up the tablet actually 2 days ago after I got home.
- 6:33Like I have a tablet. Let me fire that thing up, yeah.
- 6:36Yeah, realize they're recording a podcast today.
- 6:38Yeah. The comfort shows, though.
- 6:41Yeah, for me, being up in the air, I need that.
- 6:43Yeah, you're pretty uncomfortable up there.
- 6:44Yeah, I need to lock in. So Bosh.
- 6:46I'm like, let's redo it. Got through two seasons.
- 6:49Easy peasy. Lovely.
- 6:51He appreciates that the BT, Bosch and the BBC all appreciate
- 6:54you. My wife doesn't.
- 6:56The things I do for that woman goes unnoticed.
- 7:02Kidding, of course. All that is to say there is no
- 7:06love in the airports as Love Actually displayed.
- 7:09It showed a lot of things incorrectly and misleads a lot
- 7:12of. People, I have to tell you, I
- 7:14think we're getting deeper into it.
- 7:15It's a you. Problem.
- 7:16It is a me problem. You can't even handle the guy
- 7:19being nice. Are you going to find love when?
- 7:22That's your triggering. I'm not looking.
- 7:24For it, for one, literally, I'm not.
- 7:25I'm really not. No, no, no love lost here.
- 7:28Here's something I do love, David, and I have to tell you, I
- 7:31have in the last three days gone to see 3 movies.
- 7:35I'm averaging a movie a day for 2026.
- 7:39You're on a tear and I have to ask.
- 7:41You. Oh shit.
- 7:43If you recall, we've had a number of conversations over the
- 7:46years, but specifically a year ago you committed to movie
- 7:50theatre going in 2025. I did go to the theatre to apply
- 7:56for a job. I'm unemployed.
- 8:00I'm a bum, to be honest with you.
- 8:02I haven't worked since June. Alright, so I went there for a
- 8:06job application and you know what he said to me?
- 8:09He said. You don't have enough experience
- 8:12in the movie theatre and we can't offer you.
- 8:14This position. And I said Moana 2, is that not
- 8:18enough? What else do I need to?
- 8:20Do I can't remember if I saw Moana 2 at the very end of 2024
- 8:25OK or the very beginning of 2025?
- 8:27It released November 27th. OK, could go either way.
- 8:32We'll say January just to ensure I've ticked the box and I'm off
- 8:36the hook legally. Legally I'm fine.
- 8:40Morally and ethically I'm not fine.
- 8:42I should go much more. Absolutely.
- 8:44My wife went to see housemaid recently because we were talking
- 8:48about popcorn before the show. Yes, that's where it came from.
- 8:51I didn't go, she's with another friend.
- 8:54I wasn't even invited. Sydney Sweeney Yeah, yeah.
- 8:56Can't get excited about that. I don't know who that is.
- 8:59She a new up and Comer. I guess so, yeah.
- 9:01I don't like that old school buddy.
- 9:02Yeah, and we discussed going to see a movie and a conda.
- 9:07Wow. And we just got back from the
- 9:09trip. Of course, it's a 22 hour
- 9:12flight, like for sure. So we're hitting some pretty jet
- 9:15lag and we were just pretty. Wiped.
- 9:17That movie is not going to do much to, I think, keep you.
- 9:19Yeah, but the conversation was had.
- 9:22OK, that's a start. It's a start.
- 9:24Coincidentally, I've thought about working in a movie theatre
- 9:26on the weekends. Yeah, yeah, just to get just
- 9:29the. Ticket back to the movies?
- 9:30Yeah, More often. More frequently.
- 9:31Yep, There you go. You make money and then you save
- 9:34money by not having to pay for the tickets.
- 9:36Correct. I love going to movies.
- 9:40You do. And I saw Marty Supreme.
- 9:42Fantastic. Yeah, OK, Very, very good.
- 9:44Went to see Alien Aliens playing at the Mayfair.
- 9:48Fantastic. Not a new alien.
- 9:50No, no, no the. Original never know these SQL
- 9:52for sure. And then I ended up going with
- 9:54the family to go see the SpongeBob movie, which.
- 9:56Was. Absolute disaster.
- 9:59How old is your family? 55 is the youngest.
- 10:02OK, it sucks. It sucks.
- 10:04I don't. Understand.
- 10:05I couldn't even tell you it sucks.
- 10:06It doesn't make any sense. I don't understand.
- 10:08It, yeah, you're not part of that.
- 10:09World screaming and yelling and butts and I just was like what
- 10:11is happening? But I did go to see a movie
- 10:14every day. This year, good for you,
- 10:15Phillip. I'm hold up my end of the
- 10:17bargain around. Here, it looks like you're
- 10:18covering me too. Between the two of us, we can
- 10:21say that we go to the movie every other.
- 10:22Day. Yeah, there we.
- 10:23Go yeah, we don't need to get into specifics.
- 10:25You need. That's too deep.
- 10:27But here's my new commitment for 2026.
- 10:31Twice. 2 times. Minimum.
- 10:33Minimum. Minimum.
- 10:34OK. I wanna live more.
- 10:35Wanna get out there. Get out there.
- 10:37Put yourself out there. If I could go to New Zealand and
- 10:39Australia, you're telling me I can't go down the street to the
- 10:42theatre? It's ridiculous.
- 10:43Which I would probably enjoy more.
- 10:45Yeah, Just getting. Had a great time.
- 10:47Great time. Enjoy more than the.
- 10:49Yeah. You could have watched 11
- 10:50movies. I could have Comfort, buddy.
- 10:53Comfort shows. Comfort shows.
- 11:02What brings me comfort, David, of course, are the shelfies.
- 11:06Don't like that? The selfies?
- 11:09Yeah, we can. We now have discussed.
- 11:11This before the show. You changed the logo, I'm
- 11:14changing the title of the awards.
- 11:16Yeah, and I can't edit it out. You said it twice.
- 11:17It's gonna be all disjointed, so you gotta leave it in now it's
- 11:20there. It's gonna be with us for all
- 11:21posterity. OK?
- 11:22We're gonna kick it off as we did last year.
- 11:25Yes, with our most and least listened episodes.
- 11:29Yeah, these. These are easy because it's just
- 11:31numbers exactly. It's numbers don't lie.
- 11:34Yeah, and as you may or may not know, I paid 0 attention to the
- 11:38numbers yet. Really.
- 11:38Involved in the podcast at all I just.
- 11:41Do this part you just. Yeah, you just do the talking.
- 11:43And I do the watching, you do the.
- 11:45Watching, you're very good at that.
- 11:47Everyday I log. In so David, this is your turn.
- 11:50Your what is the most listened to episode of season 5 and
- 11:54subsequently are at least listen to episodes Did you wanna guess?
- 11:58No. OK, couldn't even begin.
- 12:00I assume they're from my shelf because historically we'll say
- 12:04they've not ever been on my show the least.
- 12:06Listened to is on your show. Yeah, there.
- 12:07You go I. Think it's not Murder in Space
- 12:10because we did that last last year.
- 12:12Yeah. The least listened to is Friday
- 12:15the 13th, the final chapter. Wow.
- 12:18Arguably that's the best fun. Wow.
- 12:22But no one wants to listen to. I guess not.
- 12:25Just want to watch it. They're just too busy watching
- 12:27you watching it. Exactly.
- 12:28Joe Zito. Joint and there you are, yeah.
- 12:31And the most listened to, which obviously is off of my shelf and
- 12:35obviously is a Bruce Willis movie.
- 12:38Six cents. Well, that makes.
- 12:40Some sense that's got a large following, yeah, maybe that's.
- 12:43Why? I'm just happy that it's Bruce.
- 12:45Willis movie, It might be the first time.
- 12:47Last year it was striking distance.
- 12:49Oh, it was tied with Ace Ventura.
- 12:51So there are Bruce fans that are there out there.
- 12:53I think it's you. Yeah.
- 12:54I feel like it's you loading up the podcast.
- 12:57Just got it on repeat. I have a lot of different IP's
- 13:01at home, right? Yeah, 74 different emails
- 13:04you're. Mining instead of crypto.
- 13:06You're you're mining, yeah. Listen, I spend a lot of money
- 13:09every month on Spotify subscriptions.
- 13:12I have 14 iPhones at home. Whatever it takes to take Bruce
- 13:16to #1 the legend lives on. It surprises me still, but not
- 13:23as much as these next category, which is of course the biggest
- 13:26surprises you are on. Fire with Segways today.
- 13:30You're just killing it, buddy. Crushing.
- 13:32Good for you, kicking it off with a bang.
- 13:34Yeah, you're coming. Strong in the year and by the
- 13:36end of the year you're just Peters out.
- 13:37Yeah. What is it Have a?
- 13:39Husk of a man, you gotta. Keep a little gas in the tank
- 13:42for, you know, November. Energy high.
- 13:46So, yeah, biggest surprise, you said, right, That's it.
- 13:48Biggest surprise, good or bad, doesn't matter.
- 13:50Just a surprise. Just a surprise.
- 13:52Yeah. To start things off, Phil, the
- 13:54biggest surprise off of your shelf.
- 13:56There are many. I like that about you.
- 14:00Always full of surprises. Keep me on my toes.
- 14:02Yeah, which is good if I was trying to be a ballet dancer,
- 14:06which I am not. Not with those ankles.
- 14:10I got perfectly fine ankles. I got a lot of other problems
- 14:14though. The surprise was how interested
- 14:18I was to watch Friday the 13th Part 2.
- 14:23I'm still in shock. Yeah, that.
- 14:25Watching the first one gave me that feeling like let's fire it
- 14:30up, let's get it in the old DVD. Player Well, what's funny about
- 14:35this, and I want to be clear to the audience, we do not go over
- 14:38the answers to these questions. Evanston These categories, of
- 14:41course not. The biggest surprise I have
- 14:46coming off of my shelf was that your excitement to watch Part 4
- 14:49of Friday the 13th was the biggest surprise we audibled.
- 14:53I took away one of my You did. You were.
- 14:54Like, let's just keep going back to the well.
- 14:57And I was really impressed by that fact, so.
- 14:59Anybody who's been around for these five wonderful seasons
- 15:02we've had together, Phillip is quite aware of my aversion.
- 15:07Would that be a word to to horror movies?
- 15:09You're good with words. You got a better one.
- 15:11Yeah. Aberration hatred.
- 15:12Yeah, that's too strong. It is pretty.
- 15:14That is strong. So that checks out.
- 15:16But yeah, I forgot about that one.
- 15:17Actually. I'm pleased that both of our
- 15:19biggest surprises as it were Friday the 13th related.
- 15:22But yeah, you really dug in. You were less excited about
- 15:24taking five off the shelf at that point, though.
- 15:26Yes, that is true. You did top out.
- 15:29That's. Enough.
- 15:31Enough till October. Yeah, and moving.
- 15:34On to my show, Phil at the biggest surprise.
- 15:37My hat was the quality dip from Jurassic Park to Jurassic Park 2
- 15:45this time. Yeah, because if you recall, in
- 15:47the episode came in. Excited for it.
- 15:50There was a point in my. Life where I think Lost World is
- 15:53better than the original because I had just, it was fresh, it was
- 15:57new. But watching them back-to-back?
- 15:59No, not even close. Not even, not even close.
- 16:02Not even close. Miserable.
- 16:04Last year, it was a similar thing for me, where you like a
- 16:06movie and you realize, oh, wait. I was surprised that that wasn't
- 16:09as good as I remembered it being.
- 16:10Yeah. But this year, off of your
- 16:13shelf, what surprised me most was that you brought Monk off
- 16:17the shelf despite it not having any real movie quality
- 16:22qualification qualifications. So that was a surprise that we
- 16:26managed to talk about Monk on the movie podcast.
- 16:30That was a happy surprise. I think that's labeled as.
- 16:33So the biggest surprise was that we did a TV show.
- 16:36I have a couple of honorable mentions, though.
- 16:39OK. Speaking of quality dip, if you
- 16:43recall way back we did Fury Rd. And I.
- 16:47Like that? It's more than I.
- 16:50Remember, you know, I saw in the theatre and I was like this is
- 16:52OK, but watching it I was really elevated that gap between
- 16:57Furiosa. Yes, yes, when that came out, I
- 16:59hated that movie. I thought it was terrible in
- 17:01every didn't have. The adrenaline, Nothing.
- 17:03Good. Nothing was quality.
- 17:05And so that dip I thought was really a big surprise.
- 17:08You talked with a little anticipation if you recall last
- 17:11year. Oh, that's.
- 17:12Right. Yes, yes, that you were, you
- 17:13know. Hoping that might have been the
- 17:15one that was going to get you to the theatre.
- 17:16That's how you. That's correct.
- 17:18Yes. That's how you phrased it last
- 17:19year. Didn't quite make it, but we did
- 17:21cover it. We did cover it.
- 17:22And yeah, that was a gap where I thought, wow, that's that was a
- 17:25shock. I remember you.
- 17:26You felt it was the CGI was rushed.
- 17:28Yeah. Looked bad, sloppy, great.
- 17:30It didn't have the. The fuel, you know what I mean?
- 17:33Like of the first one, it was longer which is fine, it can be.
- 17:37But it's, yeah, wasted. Yeah, I thought another mention
- 17:41is patched, Dale. How did I not have that one?
- 17:46I was a big. Surprise, I would not
- 17:47anticipate. Like I don't, I think I didn't
- 17:49bring it up because I'm still in shock.
- 17:50Gobsmacked that you love that movie so much.
- 17:54And there you go. You know, that's what this show
- 17:56brings, a little surprise here. It does.
- 17:57Absolutely. It also brings a lot of designs,
- 18:03right? You know?
- 18:07Yeah. Yeah, got her design on other
- 18:09things, designing women I knew. You were going to bring up
- 18:11designing women, and I respect the hell out of it.
- 18:13Jean Smart. Yeah.
- 18:15Annie Potts? Shaq Taylor.
- 18:17Joe Mcraney's wife, I believe, is the Delta Burke.
- 18:19Delta Burke? Yes.
- 18:21What already? Saw in her.
- 18:22I'm not saying she's a bad woman, I'm just wondering what
- 18:24drew Gerald Delta. I don't.
- 18:27Know it was boobs. It's always boobs.
- 18:30It's always poops. Stupid question, Gerald.
- 18:34A man's man's Is he still around?
- 18:36I believe. He is not OK.
- 18:38That sucks. Couldn't tell you though.
- 18:39I officially. Don't trust social media, by the
- 18:42way. OK, Final straw.
- 18:44It came up Mr. T's birthday, which could be true, who knows.
- 18:48He's 98. He's not.
- 18:49Yeah, exactly. I think, shit, he's 98.
- 18:52So I want to see what a 98 year old Mr. T looks like.
- 18:55So I wanted it right in No, no I.
- 18:58I did my own search. I did my own Google search
- 19:00images. Mr. T's like, Oh well, I guess
- 19:04he is in seclusion. Nothing's coming up that has him
- 19:07looking like he's 98. He looks around 70 in this
- 19:09picture. I look it up and he's 73.
- 19:13That's it. I'm done with social media as my
- 19:16new source. Finally, that's it.
- 19:20Mr. T put you over the. Edge fool me once, but yes, best
- 19:26design, Phillip, best design. I am going to introduce that
- 19:31category and I want to hear what you felt about that on my.
- 19:35Shelf Well, David, I've got coming off your shelf what I
- 19:37really enjoyed It was one of the only things that stuck with me
- 19:41when the only. Movie when we.
- 19:43Talked about this movie. There was a memory I had of the
- 19:45toy set and the play set and the action figures and I was really
- 19:51enjoying Robin Hood, the Prince of Thieves movie, The castles or
- 19:56so, the forest, the section of OHHHHH.
- 19:59Yeah, right. Like.
- 20:00All the huts, the living experiences and the trees and
- 20:03whatnot. Yeah, the whole.
- 20:04Blueprint for yeah. I really enjoyed that.
- 20:05I thought that was a lovely yeah design.
- 20:08Yeah, just like a really good set construction.
- 20:11It looked real look lived in and certainly has a 12 or 13 year
- 20:14old kid. I was like, yeah, you could just
- 20:16play in that for us all day long.
- 20:17So I really enjoyed that. Thank you.
- 20:19OK, full credit for that forest. Well done.
- 20:21I used to live near the forest, if you recall.
- 20:23Yeah, absolutely. I came up a.
- 20:25Few times last year, totally. Yeah, you know.
- 20:27How I like a good LUT. You are a lot guy I.
- 20:30Love a good lut. Yeah, I'm a lover so I jot it
- 20:34down. American made ohhhhh.
- 20:36Yeah, yeah, just all. Loud all the time.
- 20:38Yeah. It's just the overall look of
- 20:40the movie. Sure.
- 20:41It pops. Sure.
- 20:42And I think they did a real good job of recreating the 1980s
- 20:46eighties. Yeah.
- 20:47So I really appreciated that. And it's the only way that I was
- 20:51going to get American made on this.
- 20:53Yes, for sure. At this time of year, you know,
- 20:55drug running, yeah. It's been a theme, a bit of a
- 20:58theme. In Central America, peaking
- 21:00right now as we speak as. For yourself, and this is a bit
- 21:03of a surprise because you're. Not the biggest.
- 21:06Surprise. No, No, clearly not for
- 21:08category, because sometimes Burton sneaks in here.
- 21:11Yeah, I'm done with him. Or maybe had it somewhere else.
- 21:14So I slotted in Mr. Magorium's Magic Emporium Wonder.
- 21:20I did that for you, but I think you know.
- 21:21The answers to these Yeah, so. Yeah, yeah, very creative.
- 21:26Well, that's. Great, David, because off of my
- 21:29shelf I have listed Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium.
- 21:32Yeah, it's beautiful. I love the set.
- 21:34Obviously the toy store and magic taking.
- 21:36It's all the things I love. Beautiful.
- 21:38Honorable mention Tim Burtons Batman.
- 21:42I figured because I have. To say I was like, well, Tim
- 21:44usually wins. This one certainly did last
- 21:46year. Off of your shelf anyway.
- 21:48Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice.
- 21:50Almost said it twice. Ohm back that up, but.
- 21:53Yeah, I thought Magorium's the design of that just lovely
- 21:56aesthetic. Inarguable.
- 21:57Sure. Totally inarguable.
- 21:58Don't even try. Absolutely I won't.
- 22:00Good. What is an arguable David, is
- 22:02that we're moving on to the best soundtrack section category.
- 22:07Segues are getting weak little. Weaker, you know, I've peaked as
- 22:10you mentioned pretty early on. We're not going off the shelf.
- 22:14It's just unilaterally I got. Something for both, buddy.
- 22:18OK, well, I've done. Half the job?
- 22:20Yeah, that sounds about right, slacker.
- 22:22I did pick 2 movies, but they're coincidentally both off my shelf
- 22:26of course. So.
- 22:27Best soundtrack? My initial thought was Little
- 22:30Shop of Horrors. Reasonable.
- 22:32Yeah, of course. Yeah, they get.
- 22:33The edge but I. Thought it was a bit of a cop
- 22:35out. It is a cause of the musical
- 22:37nature of it. And so my choice then is Wonder
- 22:40Boys, which is a soundtrack that I.
- 22:43Could. Not get enough of when you did?
- 22:45Mention it, John. Lennon's watching the wheels on
- 22:47a couple of Bob Dylan songs, Buckets of rain that we won the
- 22:50Oscar for. Things have changed.
- 22:52It's all great, great, great music and I love it a lot.
- 22:56So that was my pick for best soundtrack.
- 22:57What have you got, David? What do I have?
- 22:59Indeed. Now I really just have the one
- 23:02off of my shelf. I had one for your shelf, but I
- 23:05would be lying. OK, I did write down Little Shop
- 23:08of Horrors as because like, this is a soundtrack and if I have to
- 23:12pick one off your shelf, sure. You will.
- 23:13Might as well go to Skid Row. Might.
- 23:15As well. But you did another musical this
- 23:17year, La Bamba, and I recall not liking it.
- 23:20The music of it, yeah. There's not a lot of music in
- 23:22that cause he was such a young guy, but.
- 23:24Alabama had 4 words in the whole song.
- 23:26Sure, you need more than that. Yeah.
- 23:27But overall, best soundtrack of our selections last year?
- 23:32Varsity Blues. Wow.
- 23:34Come on, there goes my hero, a collective.
- 23:37Soul. Yeah, that's good song, partly
- 23:40because. I actually did own the
- 23:41soundtrack. Sure.
- 23:41It's like I feel with Wonder Boys.
- 23:43It's just like I owned it. I listened to it all the time.
- 23:45It's a big thing. Came out a year later than The
- 23:47Varsity Blues. If you're a soundtrack and you
- 23:48can get on to my Spotify somehow, yeah, there's something
- 23:52to be said that is a. Pretty good soundtrack.
- 23:53I think the two kind of highlight songs like you
- 23:55mentioned ones and then the others were a little
- 23:58forgettable, but that's a good pick if I had done all the work.
- 24:01Would. Have been on the list.
- 24:04Let me see if you did this work. Best score?
- 24:06Let's even. The score, if you will.
- 24:08And maybe we'll watch the movie Tune starring Al Pacino.
- 24:11No, no, Robert and the other one for this many years still
- 24:16getting mixed up because we broke it down this year to three
- 24:19different sound categories. I really put it on effort in
- 24:21this year I'm. Happy, I want to get there Good
- 24:23and what I. Had off of your shelf for best
- 24:26score is Batman Returns Great score.
- 24:30Of course it's a great score. Why would I?
- 24:32Choose it. Otherwise it's an alpha man.
- 24:34It's an Elfman. Yeah.
- 24:35You can't go wrong with Danny. 100%.
- 24:37He's great. It's not my pick.
- 24:39I have like, a variety. Another off of your shelf.
- 24:43I have Jurassic Park. It's not.
- 24:46I mean, of course. Off of my shelf, though, I
- 24:48decided to go a little bit off the beaten path because, you
- 24:50know, Jurassic Parks got the credibility.
- 24:52But I picked The Usual Suspects, which is another score I
- 24:56listened to a lot. John Ottman couldn't tell you.
- 24:59It's so good. There's a couple of trigger
- 25:01points in particular, the way the score at the end, as verbal
- 25:05is discovered, as it were, and the moment that the montage is
- 25:09playing, the audio, the foot and all of the score playing
- 25:12underneath that. I gotta chill when I watch it.
- 25:14There's a lot of really great music.
- 25:16I think if you go back, even if you don't watch the movie, just
- 25:19a couple of those cues I thought were very good.
- 25:21So I believe. You.
- 25:22I don't think you'd lie about it.
- 25:23That's I know you. Really like that movie and maybe
- 25:25you could fit in anywhere else so you could sneak it and yeah,
- 25:30it's. Fair.
- 25:30But I'm happy to put it there, OK?
- 25:32I had Josh, Jurassic Park for my pick.
- 25:34Again. I own that CD, of course, and
- 25:37it's the only CD soundtrack I think I owned that had no words.
- 25:41No words, Right. Like at Armageddon.
- 25:44But we have Aerosmith, right? And such.
- 25:46This is just pure instrumental when that helicopter is coming
- 25:49down, like, come on. Yeah, it's that was my easiest
- 25:52Peck. I think it's.
- 25:53Just incredible. And it's really tough to argue
- 25:55it. And technically it could
- 25:57probably win about three of these awards if we really
- 25:59thought about it. But we're not into thinking
- 26:02about it. No, Speaking of not thinking
- 26:04about it, I didn't have an answer to the sound design
- 26:08category this year, I felt. Bad last year, not putting a lot
- 26:11of thought like what is sound design?
- 26:12What's Phil even talking about? Yeah, I say that a lot, but I
- 26:16did this year, so I'm, I think. If I was, this is a category
- 26:18that could very well go to Jurassic Park.
- 26:21Yeah, right. Yeah, I guess a little with.
- 26:23And so that's maybe why I was like, I don't want to top heavy
- 26:25on the Jurassic Park. But what do you have?
- 26:27Tell me about maybe you could spark a couple of shorts in my
- 26:30mind. I have a couple.
- 26:31I did one of off of each shelf, OK, as instructed.
- 26:36And the one I have off your shelf is Glengarry Glen Ross
- 26:40recreating the sounds of the office.
- 26:43Yeah. Isn't.
- 26:44Easy, you got a lot of phone ringing now.
- 26:47I actually looked up the top 100 sound design movies on IMDb.
- 26:53IMDb. IMDb I think.
- 26:55I've been saying you have forever, but.
- 26:57I stopped correcting you decades ago for the best, Alf.
- 27:03And it came in at #87. Glengarry did, yeah.
- 27:06But it was the only one that we did last year that was on that
- 27:09100 Jurassic wouldn't even be on.
- 27:11Yeah, I guess they really take the design like they really get
- 27:13specific on, yes. But to me, I mean here in the
- 27:16doors clatter and the things that none of those things are
- 27:18lies designed. And the one I picked off of my
- 27:21shelf was Diehard 5. Again.
- 27:24That phone rang in the back speaker, and that's why I really
- 27:28harped on you for not having your surround sound, because
- 27:30you're not getting that. You're not getting that sound.
- 27:33And now, buddy, yeah, you are now good.
- 27:35I'm proud of you. By the way, good work finally
- 27:37getting those speakers up, at least to the five .1 What's?
- 27:40Really funny is the joke answer. I would have had had it come
- 27:44back to me. Was Glengarry Glen Ross.
- 27:46Yeah. Well, I mean.
- 27:47Hey, and the coffee cups and the phone ringing and it's on the
- 27:50list. So I would have never.
- 27:53Guessed. I would have never guessed that
- 27:54would have been the one. That's fantastic.
- 27:56Well, I guess. We can get a little more
- 27:57serious, though. Yeah, There's anything this
- 27:58podcast is about as serious, absolutely down to business in
- 28:03the business of doing special effects.
- 28:05It's a lot of work. Totally a lot of.
- 28:07Work and people put a lot of effort into it and this was a
- 28:11challenge. I think we had a lot of movies
- 28:14which had effects, and a lot of them were pretty special.
- 28:18And what I had for your shelf, Phillip, and I think you're
- 28:22gonna appreciate this, please. Friday.
- 28:24The 13th, the final chapter, fantastic.
- 28:28I was really impressed, especially with more or less the
- 28:32final scene where he's putting the knife through the.
- 28:35Head. Yeah.
- 28:35Forward. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:37What? Year was that 88484 and I
- 28:40thought well I write it down before it before I changed my
- 28:44mind. And that's what I put.
- 28:46That's my pick too. Oh, OK.
- 28:48It's genius. I thought the same thing.
- 28:50For a guy that grew up loving gore and makeup effects and
- 28:54practicals, it's so good. And I honorable mention to
- 28:58Jurassic Park, just because obviously it's the evolution of
- 29:00that. It's a combination of your, you
- 29:02know, your standard CGI, but also practical but also visual,
- 29:06like a lot of different pieces. But fundamentally, the hands-on
- 29:10nature of Tom Savini's work in Friday 13th, particularly in
- 29:12part four, I was like, this is the hands down winner for my
- 29:15taste. So I'm glad that it's also your
- 29:16taste. Yeah.
- 29:17And of course I did this properly and off my shelf.
- 29:21Yes, is Jurassic Park. So we're In Sync.
- 29:24We're simpatico on this one because those are my picks.
- 29:26There we go. Love it.
- 29:27Who'd have thought? You know, it's almost funny.
- 29:30Is it? That's about as funny as our
- 29:32next category check, please. Jesus Murphy best comedy.
- 29:39Best. Comedy.
- 29:40Here it is. And this was a bit of a
- 29:42struggle, let me tell you. Yeah, we didn't do a ton of
- 29:44comedies this year, but we did. We did Well, let's say you did.
- 29:49Yeah, I did well. So off of the quality not
- 29:53quantity season, Yeah. I did go one off of each shelf.
- 29:57I picked Field of Dreams off of mine across.
- 30:02It's really funny to me. Yeah, but only in certain
- 30:06pockets. Yeah.
- 30:06I mean. It's not a comedy, no, but you
- 30:08literally did not do a movie that is labeled comedy.
- 30:11I don't think so. You didn't double check.
- 30:13I mean, Love Actually was, I suppose, the only.
- 30:15ROM com part but it was very low on the com No way.
- 30:19I'm writing that on. I didn't.
- 30:20Think so. So I struggled a little bit to
- 30:22find the comedy. I I went with children, which is
- 30:24funny, so it's not like a cheat. But it's definitely not a.
- 30:27Comedy movie itself. Yeah, I know, I know.
- 30:29You know that. Yeah.
- 30:30And it did cross my mind as I went through your list.
- 30:32I'm like what the fuck do I pick here?
- 30:35Did not pick that, no. You picked monk I assume, off
- 30:38yours. No, but that is funny.
- 30:40That is funny. Well.
- 30:41That's not what I picked off your shelf either.
- 30:43I didn't think it was. Funny at pretty sure I know what
- 30:47you picked off my shelf. It's.
- 30:48Maybe the only true blue laugh out loud hearty comedy that is
- 30:53leaps and bounds funnier than the remake that came out this
- 30:56year. We've got 1988, The Naked Gun,
- 30:59of course, the files of Police Squad.
- 31:02I could not get over how much I enjoyed that.
- 31:04It's so funny. It was such a refreshing.
- 31:06Refreshing. That's a good word to use.
- 31:08We were serious a lot of the time with a lot of things we do
- 31:11here, maybe not us. Typically the movies.
- 31:13We do movies. Certainly, but it was a nice.
- 31:15Breath of fresh air, for sure. Yeah.
- 31:16So that. That's my pick off your shelf,
- 31:18David, what's your pick, I mean. Just there it is.
- 31:21Any chance to watch OJ in action?
- 31:24Well, stopping when he's up to Yeah, obviously I had Naked Gun.
- 31:29I think I had one other to choose from.
- 31:31I don't even remember what it was.
- 31:32So obviously I didn't even wasn't even worth noting.
- 31:34Even general mention off your shelf, however, was quite a
- 31:38challenge and I ended up going with Friday the 13th Part 3
- 31:42because it was such a joke of a movie.
- 31:44Yeah, it was so funny how bad that movie was.
- 31:48It really was. Bad and the characters.
- 31:49We're just over the top and, like, my God, what not?
- 31:52And he's a jokester. Yeah.
- 31:54Let's give Shelly some credit here.
- 31:55Yeah. And put him in that gets an
- 31:56award. Yeah.
- 31:58Like that Larry Zerner. I think it is.
- 32:00Yeah. So that's what I settled on.
- 32:02Yeah. That's fair.
- 32:03And I appreciate the Love Friday 13th episode.
- 32:07Happy about this. And I I don't like gore just no.
- 32:09The only gore like is Al and Frank.
- 32:13Alright, running back for the Colts, if you remember in San
- 32:16Francisco. And then, of course, if I
- 32:17remember, I don't know you're I don't know.
- 32:21You're not a football guy. No.
- 32:23You almost won this year. You made it to the semifinals.
- 32:25I took it all, buddy. Did you?
- 32:27I took it all, Yeah, different time zone and I stole 12.
- 32:31Weeks of like serious underperforming, yeah.
- 32:34And that's the ball game right there.
- 32:36It is. I had the best team on the
- 32:37field. I know he did.
- 32:38Was projected and then everybody just under delivered.
- 32:41I was. Projected to lose by about 20
- 32:43points and I needed some players to step up and thankfully they
- 32:47did they. Stepped down.
- 32:48That's the way the. Game rolls, buddy.
- 32:49That's how it. Goes.
- 32:50I mean, I'm a two time champion. I understand you are I.
- 32:53Can't count how many times I've won, but I'm in a lot of
- 32:55leagues. I won two leagues this year.
- 32:56Oh. Wow.
- 32:57Yeah, I'll see you can't count. Next category here is, is it
- 33:11worth a second look? And I did watch this movie
- 33:14twice, but I watch every movie twice.
- 33:16The question is, would I go back to it again?
- 33:18Not needing to write note correct, just on your own, pure
- 33:22enjoyment for whatever reason, which the reasons will be
- 33:25discussed. We can't just say it in the
- 33:26movie without backing it up, right?
- 33:29OK. And coming off of your shelf,
- 33:32one that Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, that one OK Jack
- 33:37Nicholson's performance in that on its own, sure, with the
- 33:40second look and trigger Fletcher.
- 33:42Fletcher. She's worth watching in Murder,
- 33:45She Wrote, of course. OK, absolutely.
- 33:47So yeah, I give that one another go.
- 33:49Yeah, Cuckoo's Nest is great. I have one off of your shelf as
- 33:53well. I hope so.
- 33:55I chose was it? Easier this year it was a little
- 33:57bit. And it's actually a little bit
- 33:59of recency bias that. Always slips into the earth, and
- 34:02it's. The one movie this year that I
- 34:05felt, I think I mentioned this in the episode, I should have
- 34:09liked more than I did, and that's Looper.
- 34:11Oh, OK. I thought this has got things
- 34:14going for it that I think I should be enjoying more than I
- 34:17did, and I didn't really love that movie.
- 34:19Were you having? A bad day I don't.
- 34:21Know I don't know what it was. I watched it twice yeah.
- 34:24And it just never got its hooks in me.
- 34:27And I thought if you strip away the well that, but strip away
- 34:31the the show, you know, the requirement as it were, and just
- 34:34go in just as a pure experiential experience,
- 34:38redundant. And I wondered with the little
- 34:42distance, I could appreciate a little bit more because I think
- 34:45there's elements in there that I would like.
- 34:46I just couldn't get into it. It could be like a.
- 34:48Subconscious thing or unconscious thing yeah they're
- 34:50different that the fact that Bruce Willis is in it.
- 34:53You might have that bit of taste in your mouth and you might be
- 34:56bringing that JGL doing a Bruce impression as well.
- 34:58A little bit might have all been so now you have all that sunk in
- 35:02and you got the 5.1 as well. You might appreciate it more
- 35:05right. I like that pic good for you and
- 35:07off of my shelf. I thought that just in.
- 35:11General because I love going back to it.
- 35:12Things to do in Denver when you're dead, OK?
- 35:14It's a movie that I watched and it kind of flows over me and
- 35:17then I forget about it while and then I pick it up again.
- 35:19I'm like, God, I really like this movie, I considered.
- 35:21That one OK, but I had a real problem with it, if you recall.
- 35:25I don't think I'm ready. No, I don't think I'm over.
- 35:28Is ready. I don't think I'm over.
- 35:29I don't know if I'll get over it.
- 35:31What I had on mine with this movie has come up a couple times
- 35:34is Jurassic Park. Yeah, it was so great just for.
- 35:38Funsies right? Like it's not even like a second
- 35:40look like I didn't know if no, this is like I know it's a
- 35:42master let me do it again want to.
- 35:43Watch it again. That score, there's no pressure.
- 35:45Yeah, this shows a lot of pressure on me.
- 35:48You know it's it's showing. Stressed.
- 35:52And I thought that's just fun to watch.
- 35:53And I don't think I watched it with my wife and just watch it.
- 35:57It's a good to watch together with somebody too.
- 35:59Just yeah. Sometimes you want to share that
- 36:01particularly in love with the movie.
- 36:03I was just having this the other day.
- 36:04I was talking to someone about Aliens, the movie, and I was
- 36:07explaining a scene and in the explanation of the scene, I got
- 36:11goosebumps. Like I was so jacked up to watch
- 36:14it again. So when I watched it, I could
- 36:16feel myself almost just actually getting jacked up as the scenes
- 36:20about to happen I just described like an hour prior.
- 36:23So when you can't really share that, it's sometimes it's like
- 36:26the worst. Yeah.
- 36:27Feeling not unlike the worst film of the year, which is our
- 36:29next category. Very good.
- 36:31And this is where we make a few jabs at each other.
- 36:34Yes, absolutely. Lots to choose from from your
- 36:36shelf every other week, right 20.
- 36:39Six prime candidates, yeah, and a couple off myself.
- 36:44What I did? For yours was like, look like a
- 36:46playoff bracket. Ohe yeah.
- 36:47OK. Yeah, that's the best.
- 36:49Sure. Yeah.
- 36:50This and it took some time, about 6 hours, OK, to really
- 36:54decide on which movie of yours was the worst.
- 36:57OK, OK. Yeah, Worst overall pick or like
- 37:00just third round? I will say, Phillip, you brought
- 37:04out some bangers, like you brought out some Oscar winning
- 37:07movies. I don't like them, sure, but
- 37:10they're generally received well, yes.
- 37:12Yes, yes. History has been kind, yeah.
- 37:14Yeah, so you didn't bring a lot of low tier movies in, so thank
- 37:18you for that pleasure. But Friday the 13th Part 3, like
- 37:22it's just bad. Similar to a couple years ago, I
- 37:25picked Halloween 3. You have a problem with threes?
- 37:29I do. Because you can't.
- 37:30Count that high, Maybe that's the problem.
- 37:32I'm out. So done.
- 37:35But I think you're not gonna fully disagree.
- 37:37At the very least, no. It's my pick off the shelf
- 37:41after. Shelf.
- 37:41Yeah, that makes sense. I have an honorable.
- 37:43Mention to Jaws 2. Oh yeah, Would you?
- 37:45Like more than I did I. Don't know about that.
- 37:48I think I was in a good mood that day because sometimes I
- 37:51just feel bad for you. Like I know he loves the Jaws
- 37:53franchise. I'm just a little easy on you.
- 37:55That's fair. If you copy and paste one of the
- 37:57best movies from the 70s, how bad can it possibly be?
- 38:01It's just not new. But I.
- 38:02Mean to be fair Part 3 is a bit of a copy paste so.
- 38:05And it it fails. Yeah, miserably.
- 38:07Yeah, it's just, I think similar to Jaws too, it's the cast.
- 38:10Yeah, right. Like we had nobody to connect to
- 38:12in Jaws 2 outside of. Roy.
- 38:14Who's Roy? Yeah, yeah.
- 38:15Who phoned it? In didn't even want to be there.
- 38:17Had nothing. To no interest whatsoever, for
- 38:19sure. Yeah.
- 38:20Yeah. Real let down.
- 38:21No surprise, though. Like those are movies that I
- 38:23knew were a little weak. Although, as you remember, I
- 38:25loved Friday 13 Part 3 when I was younger, of course.
- 38:27When I first saw. It for some reason I just loved
- 38:29it and then every time I watched it since I just thought like
- 38:32this sucks off yourself. Do you have anything?
- 38:35Did you manage to find any bad? Movies.
- 38:37No, I left the big black varsity Blues.
- 38:41Yeah. Shitty fucking movie.
- 38:42Bad movie. I don't know if it's me just
- 38:45expecting more out of a teenage football movie.
- 38:49MTV movie? I believe so 19. 99 too, I'll
- 38:52take. Some responsibility for that,
- 38:54just having higher expectations and but I just, I don't know, I
- 38:59just was not in the mood for that.
- 39:01I did not. Like it Totally reasonable.
- 39:03I didn't like it either. I didn't put it in the worst
- 39:05category. However, you have to work with
- 39:08myself too. What I chose for for worst
- 39:11movie, I think in part works with what you were talking about
- 39:15expectation. So your expectations for Friday,
- 39:19one or two even and kind of getting excited for four and so
- 39:22forth and then being let down by three.
- 39:26I felt that way about Quantum of Solace and Casino Royale.
- 39:31I had never seen a Bond movie, as you know.
- 39:34Yeah, and and and enjoyed Casino Royale.
- 39:37Not loved it right, But I thought I was happy.
- 39:39To bring it to you. Good.
- 39:40Entertainment. I thought it was pretty good.
- 39:42You are. Good.
- 39:42You earned it, and I was. Excited to watch Quantum of
- 39:45Solace as a result. About everything that Casino
- 39:48Royale did well, Quantum failed at, so I that's the worst pick
- 39:52the the honorable mention, if you can call it that.
- 39:55I'm just glad it wasn't plural. Well, I mean, I have three
- 39:58listed here. I was trying to be polite.
- 40:00Monk, which we already know is a disaster of a film.
- 40:02Fuck you film. I can't.
- 40:04It's a good bit of my word out thing to watch.
- 40:06This is called the Thing an. Absolute disaster, but good day
- 40:10to die hard. Another one where, for whatever
- 40:12reason, by the time this series is puttering to its demise, I
- 40:16found so little of interest in that.
- 40:19So those are my three worst David picks, I suppose.
- 40:23Worst. So all wrong answers.
- 40:27On the short list of my surprise category was how much I enjoyed
- 40:31the first 15 minutes of Die Hard Five.
- 40:33You recall? Yes.
- 40:34Yes, I was. I was in it.
- 40:35Locked in. Absolutely locked.
- 40:37Yeah. Never been locked in like that.
- 40:39I don't. Understand it, but there it is.
- 40:40You got a pension, you got to think it's a sickness, really.
- 40:45I am glad you brought up Monk. Hmm, because it does fall in to
- 40:51the next category. Which is best movie to listen to
- 40:55if you're new to the show? Yes.
- 40:57Yeah, that's episode great. Place to start?
- 41:00Yeah, yeah, I wrote. Down Mr. Monk not his first case
- 41:04but his last case the drama yeah I have La bamba as a honorary
- 41:10mention interesting but I think despite you not enjoying that
- 41:14movie it did provide us with an interesting conversation so I
- 41:19think it's a fun listen so check it out if you're new to the.
- 41:22Show or you've got friends that may want to listen this.
- 41:24That's a good one. Wasn't my pick, but if you're a
- 41:26fan of the. Show the actual TV show?
- 41:28Yeah, there's none. Of those, no.
- 41:29It's a no doubter 8.0 and IMDb. So there's people like the show.
- 41:35Yeah, yeah. And this brings it all together.
- 41:37People. They don't really.
- 41:37This brings it all together. Uh, it was far more fun to talk
- 41:42about than what than it was to watch.
- 41:45So that is definitely I think that.
- 41:46Comes through I think. So I think so another episode
- 41:49you alluded to earlier that I think is worth the relisten.
- 41:52So my pick was it's actually a bit of a combo.
- 41:54It's a bit of a cheat, but it is things to do in Denver When
- 41:57You're dead and Hollywood Homicide were pretty close
- 42:02together and it was a pretty fiery couple of episodes that
- 42:09writer in around Monk as well. I think there was like a good
- 42:11three or four weeks there where I wasn't sure we were going to
- 42:14make it to Season 6, I thought. Hollywood would have been your
- 42:17least favorite. Actually it is in.
- 42:18The short list of. My worst favorite, but because I
- 42:21was going to mention it here, yeah, I thought I would save it,
- 42:24but I fucking hate that movie. It's terrible.
- 42:27Funny story. Last year, if you remember, the
- 42:30episode that I chose for this category was Reindeer Games.
- 42:33That's true. I did a bit of a re edit of it
- 42:37and I decided to launch that as a filler for this Christmas
- 42:41season. Right, For our vacation.
- 42:42Exactly. You did Elf Yes.
- 42:44And I did Reindeer Games because I thought it was such a good
- 42:48episode. Right?
- 42:49It wasn't an award. I was listening to it.
- 42:53I didn't want to be there. I don't interest in talking to
- 42:59you about Reindeer Games. Wow.
- 43:02And you did not like it either? No, it was terrible.
- 43:04And you just went on how shitty it is.
- 43:06And I'm like, yeah, it's shitty. I did my best to edit it into
- 43:11some palatable. Yeah, something you could taste.
- 43:14It is in the library just a few weeks ago.
- 43:17If you want to check it out, see if I was able to salvage it.
- 43:20You can listen to the original, which is back a few.
- 43:24But please watch Mr. Monk's last case.
- 43:26Trust me on this. That's.
- 43:27Good. Yeah, that's the starting point
- 43:29to stand up to time the pow wow safe indeed.
- 43:33Yeah. Anyways, one thing that Ranger
- 43:36games that did stand up for me, if you recall Charlize Theron
- 43:39and while she may not have been the best aspect of that movie,
- 43:44she was the best e-mail in that movie.
- 43:46She was That brings us to our next category, of course, which
- 43:49is the best female performance. Absolutely.
- 43:51And once again, I have to apologize to our female
- 43:53listeners because in going over the list, I don't know that we
- 43:57really. We don't ever do it enough.
- 43:59We don't do. Justice.
- 44:00And I don't know if it's a Hollywood problem or it's an US
- 44:02problem. It's probably a combination of
- 44:03both. Yeah, I think so, but.
- 44:05I recognize that this category is usually harder than it needs
- 44:09to be than it should be. I.
- 44:11Appreciate you taking ownership of that.
- 44:13I think it's mostly your fault, as you'll see from, you know,
- 44:17the top one is obviously on my shelf, obviously, obviously.
- 44:22So I ended up picking Jodie Foster in the Silence of the
- 44:26Lambs. Solid pick.
- 44:27Solid pick with a bit of an honorary mention to Frances
- 44:29Mcdormand in Wonder Boys. Now, she isn't in Wonder Boys a
- 44:32lot. Yeah.
- 44:33But I really like her performance.
- 44:34I really feel that she is that woman in that situation.
- 44:39Sure. Yeah.
- 44:40So I like that. Obviously, Jody is a bit of a
- 44:42cop out because she won the Oscar that year for Silence of
- 44:45the Lambs. Hey, you can't argue it.
- 44:47I will. And when your competition is,
- 44:50yeah, you know, some maybe less than stellar performances.
- 44:53The other honor mentioned that I was going to go with before
- 44:56having to kind of go that way. Is Amy Madigan in Field of
- 45:00Dreams OHS his wife? She's I Really, really.
- 45:04She's one. That was an Uncle Buck.
- 45:05That's right. Yeah.
- 45:06And I loved her. And she's in weapons this year.
- 45:08She hopefully will get an Oscar nomination for that good.
- 45:10But I thought she's really good in that role.
- 45:13It's a small role. It's the doting wife thing.
- 45:15But when she's allowed to be energetic and spunky and have a
- 45:19position like the scene obviously in the gymnasium at
- 45:22the PTA. Great.
- 45:24Better than the gym scene in Four Brothers.
- 45:26And four. Oh my God, yeah, Jesus.
- 45:29Fucking terrible. But yeah, so she's in there in
- 45:32the mix. Jody just carries the whole
- 45:34movie obviously, whereas she's in it.
- 45:37Not that much, but worthy of mention, I thought.
- 45:39Everything you said makes sense to me, oddly enough.
- 45:42But you. Didn't go with any of those, no.
- 45:44And that's good. I think that's a good thing
- 45:45because it gives us a chance to talk about some more.
- 45:47I did pick Jodie Foster, I think last year for Contact.
- 45:51So there's no doubt she's a good actress.
- 45:53She have 100% who else has the chops?
- 45:56And this wasn't a huge role either.
- 45:59Laura Linney. Fuck no.
- 46:02Worst, actually. Her performance is fine.
- 46:05Sure, she was asked to do things I didn't want anyone to have to
- 46:07do. Yes, yes.
- 46:08And of course, the winner is coming off of my shelf.
- 46:11No surprise there. I love the ladies is Toni
- 46:16Collette ohe? Six cents.
- 46:18Yeah, she's good. She nails it man really good.
- 46:20Like she can get to levels of emotion that I could only get 2
- 46:25under the influence of a lot of whiskey over here.
- 46:27She just beautiful performance I think.
- 46:30You're right, I if I been not all blinded by that movie, just
- 46:36generally the Bruce of it the night, although I liked it more
- 46:38when I watched it this time, giving it the thought.
- 46:40She totally is in the running right.
- 46:42Obviously didn't pick her, but she's excellent.
- 46:43To them she was. Able to portray so many
- 46:45different emotions towards her son in one scene, it's hard to
- 46:50do. Yeah, she's really good.
- 46:51And that sort of really breakout performance for her too.
- 46:53So good call. I do have.
- 46:55An honorable mention. I didn't want to leave yourself
- 46:56out of it. I appreciate that.
- 46:58Emma Thompson. Yeah.
- 47:00Nancy Bias, I try to stay away from that, you know, but she's
- 47:03phenomenal. Yeah, it needs.
- 47:04To be said, Yeah. Yeah, and we said it a lot in
- 47:06that episode. So yeah, because we just
- 47:09recently recorded it was trying to.
- 47:11Go deeper into the archives. But heck yeah, she's so good and
- 47:14she's amazing. She's really the highlight of
- 47:15that movie. She is the only highlight of
- 47:19that movie. And moving on, of course, to the
- 47:22dude side of things to choose from, of course.
- 47:27And I wasn't able to pick one off of each shelf, but I first
- 47:29want to hear if A, you were able to find one on each shelf or B,
- 47:34did you just go with one guy? I went with one guy, One guy
- 47:37last year. We went with one guy that's
- 47:39challenging. Roy.
- 47:40Scheider and all that Jazz was my last year's pick, of course,
- 47:43and. Sadly.
- 47:44Didn't repeat. We almost movies every year.
- 47:47Surprises really good. I like him a lot.
- 47:50We got something coming up this year too.
- 47:51Wonderful. So it's a bit of a toss up.
- 47:55And I leaned heavily on Jack Lemmon in Glengarry Glen Ross.
- 47:59Now we've picked him before in previous years for Days of Wine
- 48:03and Roses in particular. He's just so good.
- 48:05And to see such a young performance and Juan Roses.
- 48:08And then obviously it's a mature older man, of course.
- 48:11Yeah, in this. And he plays that really well.
- 48:13Really. Exceptionally well, Yeah.
- 48:15And my honorary mention was Russell Crowe in The Insider.
- 48:19Sure. Yeah, in rewatching it, just
- 48:21like this guy a year or two out of playing Bud Fox in LA
- 48:25Confidential. A completely.
- 48:27Different environment. Schlubby bureaucrat white collar
- 48:31guy versus hard nosed police guy.
- 48:33He has a range, yeah. Because he's done a lot of
- 48:36schlock in more recent times. It was nice to touch on, like,
- 48:40yeah, this guy used to be someone really, really
- 48:43beautiful. Mind like he did a lot of and
- 48:45working. With Christopher Plummer was
- 48:46another great actor I would have put in that category offer.
- 48:48You know, like that whole movie full of great performances.
- 48:51Good pick. Those are my picks.
- 48:52Would have what's coming off your shelf well.
- 48:54Coming in with the win, the big dub.
- 48:58Now, I didn't think of that when I just picked one off of each
- 49:02shelf, but if I have to pick one of them, I'm going to give it to
- 49:05your shelf. OK Yeah.
- 49:07Jack Nicholson in cuckoo. Of course, the cuckoo.
- 49:11Cuckoo. It's my real first experience
- 49:15outside of A few good men, which we did.
- 49:17But it was just a small part of that.
- 49:19And obviously he has that big line.
- 49:21This was a real good chance for me to sink my teeth in to an
- 49:25older performance of his before Hollywood.
- 49:28And you know, it's like. Peak Nicholson.
- 49:31Yeah, I have to be good because I need to make a living sort of
- 49:34thing. And it was a great experience.
- 49:37I didn't love every aspect of the movie, but when it came to
- 49:41Jack Nicholson, I couldn't take my eyes off him.
- 49:44Electric. Yeah, 100%.
- 49:45Yeah. That's what you want in a
- 49:46performance. And I think you're right.
- 49:47Absolutely. Definitely.
- 49:48So hopefully there's more in the pipeline.
- 49:50The things that make Jack Jack are evident in that movie.
- 49:52I think so you're right. And an honorary mention because
- 49:55I get my shelf in there. The little love, of course, was
- 49:58Al Pacino in The Recruit. Oh, yeah.
- 50:01So sort of on the other spectrum of things, we have a guy who's
- 50:04been around. He did that one with the bank
- 50:08after one of the bank and the gun.
- 50:11And then again, that's him in his early days.
- 50:13I have to be good. I had this is my job to this
- 50:17which is 2000s. It is just a job at this point,
- 50:20yeah. But I think he was still able to
- 50:22really bring a really good character.
- 50:26And great performance to that. Yeah.
- 50:27I thought it was good. I mean, to be fair, he was a
- 50:29scary judge of talent, right? We know that.
- 50:31It's on the think. Yeah.
- 50:33But what I thought was interesting is that we managed
- 50:35to book end this year with The Recruit being the first movie of
- 50:38the season. Oh, yeah.
- 50:40And four brothers ripping off the ending, more or less.
- 50:43Or least that sequence, sort of, Yeah.
- 50:45In ways all the way 1552 weeks later.
- 50:48So I thought it was kind of interesting.
- 50:50That's what I did for you. There you have it.
- 50:53Well, Dave? This is for nobody.
- 50:54We've got the Francis candidate. Francis, winner of the year, you
- 51:00have. To explain it for the 6th time
- 51:02we have to review. We choose the Francis based of
- 51:05course on the Francis character in Swiss Family Robinson, which
- 51:09we did early on and was so distasteful.
- 51:13Good movie. Though I liked it enough, but
- 51:16but he was really a big problem. And so since then, we've decided
- 51:19that when warranted, a particular actor or actors may
- 51:24be winning the Francis Awards the whole daylight.
- 51:28That's right, it's Comcast. Last year, the entire cast of
- 51:31Halloween 80 that. Was my pick right?
- 51:33Was picked. Yeah, so there's definitely a
- 51:35history there. Now, David, what have you got
- 51:37this year coming off of your winning the Francis Shelfie?
- 51:40I have a. Couple and I hate to say I feel
- 51:43they're both off your shelf. Yikes.
- 51:45I know I I tried to dig deep on my shelf but no one really got
- 51:49under my skin. Wow, what?
- 51:51Look a little harder. What did get underneath my skin
- 51:54though was Audrey one. OK, not Audrey 2.
- 51:58Audrey two, you like you were great.
- 52:00Performance by Audrey 2. Absolutely.
- 52:02Ellen Green. Yeah, that voice outside of her
- 52:05singing, singing voice was tolerable.
- 52:07Yeah. But Oh my God.
- 52:09Yeah. Brutal.
- 52:11And an honorary mention, Brad Dourif, No Larry Zerner, OK.
- 52:18Shelly yeah, yeah, that they called it during.
- 52:20That's an easy one. Yeah.
- 52:21The reason I mentioned Brad Dourif is because during One
- 52:24Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Yeah, I.
- 52:26Brought it up today. I brought up a lot.
- 52:27Well, I said he was nominated. Yes.
- 52:29No. You're not wrong, Shall.
- 52:30No, I'm not. Wrong Ohm, my God.
- 52:32And it didn't go your way. And I have two nominees I stayed
- 52:36away from the entire cast of which would have been something
- 52:41like Varsity Blues. No, I was thinking it could have
- 52:44been. I was thinking like a Friday 33,
- 52:45like Shelly, you know, because everybody in that is kind of
- 52:48crappy. Except, of course, Tracy Savage.
- 52:50Well of. Course goes without saying.
- 52:51I'm glad you said it. But so the two picks are calling
- 52:55from love. Actually, I don't wanna even
- 52:57look up his name. I would hate that character and
- 53:00I hate that guy. No, probably about it.
- 53:02I know you were OK with the story was.
- 53:03Garbage, but he was fine. I hate everything.
- 53:05About it, I think he's terrible. He realized the.
- 53:07Situation. He takes me.
- 53:08Out of the movie, not a character.
- 53:10Francis. Situation.
- 53:12I hate him OK. However, I ended up going for a
- 53:17repeat performance. It's.
- 53:19Olga Korea from Quantum of salt cave scene.
- 53:23Isn't it this? Girl sucks.
- 53:25Yeah, she sucked in Oblivion, which was my pick last year.
- 53:28I've done 3 movies with her and she.
- 53:30Sucked in Quantum of Solace. She's good, Max.
- 53:32Payne, though. I have barely any record she's.
- 53:35Decorating. Yeah, she's dead pretty early,
- 53:36thank God. I think she's a terrible actor
- 53:38and now 2 movies she's the worst.
- 53:41So now. She's bad, but she annoys you.
- 53:43She takes. Me out of a movie.
- 53:44Wow. And Colin, the only reason he
- 53:46didn't win was there were other things in the movie that I don't
- 53:50mind. I like a little bit more so he's
- 53:52isolated. But she actively makes that
- 53:54movie bad is. Your least favorite movie of the
- 53:57year and it's. My least favorite.
- 53:58So there you go, those two things in conjunction.
- 54:01She was bad in a bad movie, which makes it even worse.
- 54:05She was part of why I hated that movie more than I did.
- 54:08No. I can't argue the science behind
- 54:10terrible SO. I'm hopeful that next year you
- 54:12don't, I think. That's all I have left.
- 54:14I don't think I have anything she doesn't.
- 54:15Work a lot I guess. Maybe I'll.
- 54:17Find one. Oh my gosh.
- 54:18So she's the worst. OK, alright.
- 54:20Well, thank you for that. And that brings us from somebody
- 54:24we hate, somebody that we love, yes.
- 54:26Sir. We have a special category that
- 54:29we've done almost every year. We may have altered it a little
- 54:33bit, you might adjustments. It's always been about Bruce,
- 54:38but I need to include you because we're all about this
- 54:41inclusive stuff now. And I think it started out as
- 54:44Ben, but you weren't doing a lot of bends.
- 54:47No, because. It's a narrow window for my
- 54:49love. Yes, that's.
- 54:50True. And you're equivalent to Bruce
- 54:52is Sylvester Stallone. Yeah.
- 54:53So that is the category which is best Ben slash best slide slash
- 54:57best Bruce. Correct.
- 54:58You can just pick one. If you want a couple honorary
- 55:01mentions, you can pick one of each.
- 55:03If I'll let you do what you want with this category, but please
- 55:07involve Bruce somehow, would you?
- 55:10The three actors and movies and performances, yadda yadda.
- 55:14I have Sly and Rocky Balboa. Yeah.
- 55:17Love Rocky Six. Yeah.
- 55:19I think he's excellent in it. He shows a maturity and
- 55:23willingness to be a little bit more frumpy and so forth, but
- 55:27really take the character to a new place.
- 55:30And he directed it with a different style than previous
- 55:33movies. We watched Part 5 this year as
- 55:35well. Took the elements that maybe
- 55:37weren't so working with that and made it better.
- 55:39So from the fact that he wrote it, directed and starred in it,
- 55:42and I thought he brought something really good to the
- 55:45table. I like Paul Gross.
- 55:47My fault. Gross.
- 55:49Well. Who was fine but he's not the
- 55:52things that I like about that movie aren't necessarily his
- 55:53performance or whatever shouldn't be but I thought sly
- 55:56not just because I have a soft spot for him but a little like
- 55:59daylight. I think he's actually doing good
- 56:01work here even if the movie is overshadowed and I think this
- 56:04one the movie actually doesn't over shadow.
- 56:05I think it actually all works really really well.
- 56:07I. Like that pick Phillip and if I
- 56:09had to pick like a Bruce slowly in a band that would be my pick
- 56:14100%. But you gotta.
- 56:15Go. You gotta go.
- 56:17I have to. Go exactly.
- 56:18I have to go with Bruce Willis. Now what I like to do for this
- 56:21category, if you'll indulge me. Best Bruce performance and best.
- 56:26Bruce movie makes sense which you did last year as well.
- 56:29I did do last year, tracking distance was performance and die
- 56:33hard 4 was the best move that. Bridge scene and striking
- 56:36distance. Wow.
- 56:37While he was able to cry. Well, this one I chose one that
- 56:41he did not have to cry, thankfully.
- 56:43But performance wise, I chose Looper.
- 56:46OK, he's pretty. You really liked him?
- 56:48In that. Yeah, yeah.
- 56:49But the better movie was $0.06. In my opinion, no.
- 56:52I think that's fair. But.
- 56:53A lot of whispering, so much. Whispering performance on that
- 56:57movie is any good, so if anything the movie is much
- 57:00better than his performance. And then the only Ben we did
- 57:05just as a reference was the accountant and which we both
- 57:08like no listen to again, I don't think.
- 57:11I like that you. Liked it more than I did.
- 57:13I had some issues. That's really how this pacing
- 57:16goes. Really.
- 57:16Yeah, yeah, yeah. No pacing issues.
- 57:18Wasn't his performance, though. No, he was fine in it.
- 57:21Yeah. I haven't seen the account 2
- 57:23yet. Garbage.
- 57:23I hated it. There you go.
- 57:24It's such a let down in the theatre.
- 57:28The craziest theatrical experience I've ever had.
- 57:30I took 2 phone calls. Yeah, this in the middle of the.
- 57:33Theatre made made a call out and took a phone call in.
- 57:35Wow. Who do you think is acceptable?
- 57:37Yeah, unacceptable. What is acceptable is you
- 57:40introducing our next category, David.
- 57:42We've come to the end of the road it.
- 57:44Is already oh, we just voice to. Men got started.
- 57:50We're going with the best movie of the year per shelf to give
- 57:53proper due. Where?
- 57:55Credit where it's this is for legal reasons, that's right.
- 57:57It's obligated, it's in the contract.
- 57:59Otherwise we wouldn't do it at all.
- 58:02We have the best movie coming off of shelves now.
- 58:05David, I have to ask you again, legally mandated right there in
- 58:09the contract, what are your best movies of the year's best movie?
- 58:12You want me to do both? I'll do both.
- 58:14Do. Both.
- 58:14Do both. I'll do my show first.
- 58:16OK? Jurassic Park.
- 58:19Lovely. It's an arguable, even though it
- 58:21wasn't received that well by critics.
- 58:24Critics hate Steven Spielberg movies for some reason.
- 58:27I never win the Oscars either. Like, he's won two, obviously,
- 58:29but generally, yeah, he's done at least four or five movies.
- 58:32I've loved The Post, loved, loved West Side Story, loved,
- 58:35loved, loved the fable Means. And every review comes out and
- 58:38it's sort of like, oh, it's another Spielberg movie and I'm
- 58:41like, he said. Tom Brady of Yeah, like he just
- 58:43kind of. Turned on him a little bit like,
- 58:45Oh yeah, here he is doing his thing again, except his does his
- 58:47thing better than anybody ever, you know?
- 58:50I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone who do not like
- 58:52Jurassic Park. And what I love about the most
- 58:55is that we can watch it 32 years later and say, oh, my gosh, this
- 58:58is still an amazing movie. Yeah, and that says something
- 59:01about the director of that movie, and it's just absolutely
- 59:05fantastic. And it was the one I wanna go
- 59:06back and watch again. So watchable.
- 59:08The effects still hold up. Exactly.
- 59:10Everything is really great. It's so exciting.
- 59:12It's gripping. It's really, really, very cool.
- 59:14Let me get Dotson. And you've got Dotson.
- 59:17'S best movie off of your shelf. This wasn't easy.
- 59:21Too many to choose from? Well, a glutton of riches.
- 59:23I wouldn't go that far, but you did bring a lot of Oscar winning
- 59:27movies. You kind of clump them together
- 59:29and those were fantastic. Shit, did I just say that?
- 59:33Slip in the tongues of the tongue?
- 59:35I got hacked. But the one that stood out for
- 59:37me the most was Glengarry Glen Ross.
- 59:41Nice work, good call, I said. It before I'll say it again,
- 59:45just an action movie of dialogue, amazing performances
- 59:48by everybody and just a lot of fun to watch and for a movie
- 59:52that doesn't have a lot of different scenes like when it
- 59:56comes to like sets. Two sets is like the office and
- 59:58then the Chinese to be. Able to make it that good.
- 1:00:02With that, I thought this is a really good movie.
- 1:00:05It's not alone. I agree.
- 1:00:06Incredible performances, incredible writing, the vibe of
- 1:00:10it, it's endlessly watchable. Such unlikable people.
- 1:00:13Hmm. Yet somehow you're engaged and
- 1:00:15you know. Me, I usually like to have that
- 1:00:16hero. Yeah, that's.
- 1:00:17The ability of that movie, I think, is to really tell that
- 1:00:21story with these people who are bad people generally all around
- 1:00:24me because. I'm in sales.
- 1:00:26Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I think Jack Lemmon's the
- 1:00:28closest guy to kind of latching on to is your hero.
- 1:00:32But he is not that. He's not that, no.
- 1:00:34Nobody really is, ultimately. I mean, Aaron now is like the
- 1:00:36real sad guy. That's fantastic.
- 1:00:40Great pick. Yeah, great picks.
- 1:00:41Actually, both. Thank you.
- 1:00:42Thank you. And I would hope so because it's
- 1:00:44the, you know, Yeah. That's movies.
- 1:00:45The movies, yeah. Sometimes we don't agree though,
- 1:00:48and I will say I don't good well in that I pick different movies,
- 1:00:52but I can't argue your picks. You're right on point.
- 1:00:55All I can hope for. I just went out slightly
- 1:00:57different. Let's see if I.
- 1:00:58Can argue yours. What do you got?
- 1:01:00Bring it. Off of your shelf I took away.
- 1:01:02Let's just preface this. I purposefully took away Silence
- 1:01:07of the Lambs 1 foot of the Cuckoo's Nest, particularly the
- 1:01:09ones that had already won. Those are the big 5.
- 1:01:11That was the sort of they got their.
- 1:01:12Yeah, award like. Everybody knows those movies are
- 1:01:15phenomenal. It around correct?
- 1:01:17Yeah. So I took them off the board and
- 1:01:19when I thought about it, left off your shelf what I thought
- 1:01:23was way better than I thought it was and really good filmmaking,
- 1:01:28good performances, all the things you would want.
- 1:01:30I went with No way Out. Yeah, I just clicked it.
- 1:01:33I clicked right at the end there.
- 1:01:34It's. Not a perfect movie by any
- 1:01:36stretch. Heavens, no.
- 1:01:37But I think it does what it wants to do exceptionally well.
- 1:01:39I thought performance is really solid.
- 1:01:41I was taken aback by the twist. I didn't really anticipate.
- 1:01:43I thought it really well. Woven.
- 1:01:45Not easy for you because you got that brain, that pickled.
- 1:01:48Pull out your pickled. Yeah, which is good.
- 1:01:50For your digestive system, that's right.
- 1:01:52So there you go. Anyway, I was really impressed
- 1:01:54by it. I really, really liked it.
- 1:01:55When I thought about looking at your shelf, I just thought
- 1:01:58they're better movies. Maybe.
- 1:01:59Yeah. And better appreciated in the
- 1:02:01world, you know, whatever quality.
- 1:02:03Well, let's. Take some big.
- 1:02:05This is back when I thought Sanzo on your shelf, but you
- 1:02:10know, but for whatever reason, that movie really stuck out to
- 1:02:12me is being really great. So that's my pick.
- 1:02:14I want to. Say something on that and I'm
- 1:02:15glad you brought it up. I was listening to an old
- 1:02:18episode. Was it a Donaldson film?
- 1:02:20Roger Johnson, yeah, directed that one we had.
- 1:02:22Done. The Recruit.
- 1:02:24Yes, it was The Recruit and you were listing movies that you had
- 1:02:28seen and you've claimed to have watched.
- 1:02:31Misunderstanding and No way Out. Misunderstanding.
- 1:02:34Happens misunderstanding. Pretty certain in the episode
- 1:02:38and then we did no way out. Like oh I heard about it but I
- 1:02:41haven't seen it I think. What I discovered when I watched
- 1:02:44it was that I hadn't watched it. I hadn't seen it, OK, but I had
- 1:02:46heard about it enough, I suppose, that I would have
- 1:02:49thought that I had. I have no explanation.
- 1:02:51You're lucky. It's really cold outside because
- 1:02:53you were on thin ice. Like in reindeer games, Yeah.
- 1:02:59That movie gets way too much, too much attention.
- 1:03:01It's terrible. And then off of my shelf, we
- 1:03:05already alluded to both of these movies, but I just love them so
- 1:03:08much. I think at the end of the day,
- 1:03:10it'll probably be Wonder Boys. Oh, I just love that movie.
- 1:03:14I know it didn't really connect with you in the moment.
- 1:03:17It's just got a hold on me. It's just, it hits all the
- 1:03:20things I just love about movies. It's the dead.
- 1:03:23Dog, isn't it? I love dead dogs.
- 1:03:25I. Love watching them bleed shot.
- 1:03:28I just think like it's a movie about art.
- 1:03:30It's a movie about people growing, coming to terms, forks
- 1:03:34in the road, making choices, decisions.
- 1:03:36They're all the and in the winter, you like that, you like
- 1:03:38those. Those are all elements that I
- 1:03:40really gravitate towards and all pieces of art.
- 1:03:43I love the book, I love the soundtrack, I love the
- 1:03:45performances. Put it all together and
- 1:03:47altogether I just thought this is the best movie of the year.
- 1:03:49It's fair. The other one was The Insider,
- 1:03:51which I think is again probably on a grand scheme, a better
- 1:03:55movie, let's say more. Impactful.
- 1:03:57A little more impactful. With larger themes and this and
- 1:03:59that, this is not dealing with great performances.
- 1:04:02But yeah, the smallness to opposite of Wonder Boys felt
- 1:04:06like that's what pushed over the top.
- 1:04:07So I'm not gonna. Take away from you I appreciate.
- 1:04:09That your understanding and you're not.
- 1:04:11Allowed, actually, yeah. Read the rules.
- 1:04:13Read the rules. Rules.
- 1:04:16So that's it, David. It's 2025 in the books.
- 1:04:19Yeah, we are about to embark on 2026.
- 1:04:22Yeah. Season 6 right around the
- 1:04:24corner, buddy gonna hit a. Theatre gonna hit some quality
