- 0:03Speaker 1: Now back to the NHL Draft Show with your host
- 0:06Speaker 1: Mike Benton, live from thirty two Bar and Grill, presented
- 0:09Speaker 1: by your home for the Kraken. Sports Radio ninety three
- 0:12Speaker 1: point three kjr FM.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Eighteen picks into the NHL Draft of the Krack and
- 0:18Speaker 2: we're on the run to find potentially a game breaker.
- 0:21Speaker 2: And let's just say that Chase was on and they
- 0:24Speaker 2: got their guy. Mike Benton ever fits you al koniski
- 0:27Speaker 2: Ian forness. Lie back at thirty two Bar and Grill
- 0:30Speaker 2: is Chase reed to the Kraken at seventh overall and
- 0:33Speaker 2: the guy who got him joins us now without further ado,
- 0:36Speaker 2: This is cracking GM. Jason Botterol live inside thirty two
- 0:40Speaker 2: Bar and Grill. Jason, great to have you, but also
- 0:42Speaker 2: the folks also great to have you as well here
- 0:45Speaker 2: at the at the A set.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Appreciate you joining us here. No, thank you very much.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Excited night for our entire organization. Just wanted to thank
- 0:51Speaker 3: everybody for coming out here tonight. It's great the passion
- 0:54Speaker 3: that we have in this city. You know, we see
- 0:57Speaker 3: it in at Climate Pledgering every night. But it's also
- 0:59Speaker 3: so that when we were talking a lot with Bobby
- 1:02Speaker 3: McMahon on just why he wanted to re sign with us,
- 1:04Speaker 3: The energy of the fan base, the passion from the
- 1:07Speaker 3: fan base, So thank you so much, Really do appreciate it.
- 1:09Speaker 2: The energy spike that was Bobby McMahon he got earlier
- 1:12Speaker 2: on Sunday, and now it is Chase Reid. Also around
- 1:15Speaker 2: the Mackie Samuskeavish Traders, Jason Bottral again joining us live
- 1:18Speaker 2: here at the set. But we were talking to Robert
- 1:20Speaker 2: Cron a few moments ago, just glowing about the guy
- 1:23Speaker 2: that this team got to you at number seven, Ye
- 1:27Speaker 2: Chase Reid. What doesn't mean for this organization?
- 1:30Speaker 3: Well, you know, going into the draft, you try to
- 1:32Speaker 3: figure out all these different scenarios, all these mock drafts,
- 1:35Speaker 3: and obviously we didn't expect Chase to drop to us,
- 1:38Speaker 3: but ecstatic to have him on board here. We just
- 1:40Speaker 3: think his game fits lane system so well. From that standpoint,
- 1:43Speaker 3: you watched the videos. He always has his head up.
- 1:46Speaker 3: He has a bit the skating ability to get out
- 1:47Speaker 3: of trouble. He also has the hockey sense to make
- 1:50Speaker 3: the right play to get up very quickly goes forwards.
- 1:52Speaker 3: You look at him as a late bloomer. He can
- 1:55Speaker 3: continue to improve his game that sort of heads up mentally,
- 1:58Speaker 3: that hockey sense that he had, as I think allowed
- 2:01Speaker 3: him to make the easy transition to playing at the
- 2:03Speaker 3: World Juniors this year at Christmas time. So we just
- 2:07Speaker 3: think his natural game, how he plays, is going to
- 2:10Speaker 3: be fit perfectly into our group.
- 2:12Speaker 4: Bot's how surprised for you that he slipped down to
- 2:15Speaker 4: where you were picking, because a lot of folks had
- 2:17Speaker 4: him and who knows what the marks, But I mean,
- 2:19Speaker 4: we just talked to Robert Cron a moment ago and
- 2:22Speaker 4: it's he was elated. Yeah, is this one of those
- 2:24Speaker 4: situations where you had a guy that slipped and you
- 2:27Speaker 4: were like, Wow, I can't believe he's there.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Well, I have to use I just sat it downstairs
- 2:31Speaker 3: to the media, you know, I have to use the line,
- 2:33Speaker 3: the GM line that everyone says at every draft, I
- 2:35Speaker 3: can't believe he was still there, right, you know, everyone.
- 2:37Speaker 5: Just says that is just the time.
- 2:38Speaker 3: It's true that you know, but we were high five
- 2:41Speaker 3: in each other for sure, and there like there was
- 2:42Speaker 3: a lot of excitement just to fit with our organization.
- 2:45Speaker 3: The fact that it's been well document we've used a
- 2:47Speaker 3: lot of high picks on on centerment and forwards. And
- 2:52Speaker 3: the fact that we didn't have to force this, that
- 2:54Speaker 3: this was the best player on our board and it
- 2:56Speaker 3: fits a real need for us in our organization, just
- 2:59Speaker 3: made it, you know, a great night for our group.
- 3:01Speaker 3: So these amateur scouts, the amount of hours that they
- 3:04Speaker 3: put in not only just going to games, you know,
- 3:08Speaker 3: flying all over the world, but then doing the due
- 3:11Speaker 3: diligence finding out about these players, going through the meetings,
- 3:14Speaker 3: and you know, trying to evaluate a player from like
- 3:17Speaker 3: Chase from Sue Saint Marie and compared that to a
- 3:21Speaker 3: player in Minnesota high school, compare that to a player
- 3:23Speaker 3: in you know, the.
- 3:24Speaker 5: Swedish Elite League.
- 3:25Speaker 3: It's very very difficult, and they put a lot of
- 3:28Speaker 3: time in, they work extremely hard, and for to sort
- 3:31Speaker 3: of fall our way in our minds and get a
- 3:33Speaker 3: player like Chase is very rewarding and very exciting.
- 3:36Speaker 6: Piggybacking off that, do you go into drafts with a
- 3:39Speaker 6: plan and I'll use this year as an example. You
- 3:42Speaker 6: knew that defense was an area of organizational need. Did
- 3:45Speaker 6: you go into this draft saying we need to address
- 3:48Speaker 6: the defenseman or what is it truly a best player
- 3:52Speaker 6: available or is it a case by case.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Basis, I truly believe it has to be best player available.
- 3:58Speaker 3: And just look where our team's at right now. We
- 4:00Speaker 3: need to continue to improve in a lot of different areas,
- 4:02Speaker 3: right But you know, the biggest thing is you start
- 4:04Speaker 3: going by need. At the end of the day, there's
- 4:06Speaker 3: still eighteen year old kids. It's still going to be
- 4:08Speaker 3: a progression. When Chase makes the National Hockey League, you know, whatever,
- 4:11Speaker 3: the timeframe is, one, two, three years, like so many
- 4:14Speaker 3: different things can change into This is not the NFL.
- 4:17Speaker 3: This is not where they're stepping in the next year,
- 4:18Speaker 3: and there's a specific role exactly that all the time,
- 4:21Speaker 3: you know, But that's what God doess say, is that
- 4:23Speaker 3: we didn't force it here and it did help us
- 4:26Speaker 3: with a positional need and within our organization too.
- 4:28Speaker 5: Jason, his hockey sense and skating seem to be two
- 4:31Speaker 5: of his best attributes. Maybe you agree, maybe you don't,
- 4:34Speaker 5: but just talk a little bit about what you think
- 4:36Speaker 5: some of his best attributes are and what maybe you're
- 4:39Speaker 5: going to be leading into a little bit this summer
- 4:40Speaker 5: to say, hey, let's let's work on this stuff.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Well, as an eighteen year old kid, they all can
- 4:44Speaker 3: get stronger, right, it's the same things we're talking to
- 4:47Speaker 3: Berkeley Caton about, or Shane Wright or Maddy Benier's and
- 4:50Speaker 3: even talking to a player like Jordan Eberley, even in
- 4:53Speaker 3: late stages and his career get stronger, finding different ways
- 4:56Speaker 3: to do that in the summer. But with someone like Chase,
- 4:58Speaker 3: you're talking about that it's going to be great for
- 4:59Speaker 3: him to be here next week, get to see the
- 5:01Speaker 3: Pacific Northwest, get to see our facilities here. But if
- 5:04Speaker 3: you're talking about his strength, it certainly is his speed, right,
- 5:07Speaker 3: his skating ability, in his hockey sense, you know, and
- 5:10Speaker 3: I touched on it a little bit before, you know,
- 5:12Speaker 3: the fact that he can, you know, handle a four check.
- 5:15Speaker 3: He can you know, do a great job because his
- 5:17Speaker 3: head is always up. It's just natural for him to
- 5:19Speaker 3: skate with his head up. And then you look at
- 5:22Speaker 3: him sort of just how he moves across the blue
- 5:24Speaker 3: line very well.
- 5:25Speaker 5: You know.
- 5:25Speaker 3: We can see that attributes of being a good power
- 5:27Speaker 3: play guy even at the next level too. So those
- 5:29Speaker 3: sort of type of elements I think are going to
- 5:31Speaker 3: look really good.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Jason Boderoll joining a slide here at thirty two bar
- 5:34Speaker 2: and grills the crack and picking Chase Reid at number
- 5:37Speaker 2: seven overall out of the OHL you mentioned development camp.
- 5:40Speaker 2: How fun is it going to be to watch these
- 5:42Speaker 2: guys and have him jump into the mix. And I
- 5:44Speaker 2: think just from an overall scope, now that you've got him,
- 5:47Speaker 2: you've got Berkeley Katton now in this farm system, Jacobrien,
- 5:50Speaker 2: what could the KRACK and organization look like a few
- 5:54Speaker 2: years down the road from this pipeline that they are growing.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Well, it's exciting part of it, right and if there's
- 5:58Speaker 3: always a delay aspect of but you want them to
- 6:01Speaker 3: get to the National Hockey League so quickly. We were
- 6:03Speaker 3: spoiled with Matty Benier's right off the bat, right in
- 6:06Speaker 3: this first year, coming out and getting into the National
- 6:08Speaker 3: Hockeyue right away, But it takes time for so many
- 6:10Speaker 3: other players. And you finally saw that this past year
- 6:13Speaker 3: with Jacob Malants and Ryan Windard and being ready for
- 6:16Speaker 3: the National Hockey League. Those are kids from our first draft.
- 6:19Speaker 3: It takes that much long from that from them to
- 6:22Speaker 3: to develop there. But you know, you look at different
- 6:24Speaker 3: mock sort of scenarios we have with our roster next year,
- 6:28Speaker 3: you know, in our forward groups. You know, we'll see
- 6:30Speaker 3: how things progress over the next couple of weeks here,
- 6:32Speaker 3: but there's different scenarios where we could have six or
- 6:34Speaker 3: seven kids, you know, twenty three or younger in our
- 6:37Speaker 3: forward group on opening night and just having that many
- 6:40Speaker 3: young players, you know, I think it's going to be
- 6:42Speaker 3: great for our organization. One there's an opportunity for development,
- 6:45Speaker 3: but there's there's a speed aspect, there's an energy aspect
- 6:48Speaker 3: of youthfulness that I think they can really bring to
- 6:50Speaker 3: our group, and it's going to be important that we
- 6:52Speaker 3: surround them with the right leaders, the right players to say,
- 6:55Speaker 3: alleviate some of the pressures on it. That's why we
- 6:57Speaker 3: were excited to certainly get our captain last year and
- 7:00Speaker 3: Jordan Emily resign. That's why we're excited to bring in
- 7:03Speaker 3: Bobby McMahon again because we think he can be a
- 7:05Speaker 3: good mentor and not only being a good player on
- 7:07Speaker 3: the ice for our group.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Well, Jason, it's been eventful five days for sure, starting Sunday.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Sunday was a great day, awesome day. We'll get to
- 7:14Speaker 4: some of those guys, not just Bobby, but yep, the
- 7:16Speaker 4: other new edition. What can you tell us about the
- 7:17Speaker 4: Jason Robertson situation that you guys kind of felt like
- 7:20Speaker 4: got drug into a little bit. I'm sure not by
- 7:22Speaker 4: your choice.
- 7:23Speaker 3: No, Look, it's a situation where I'm not going to
- 7:26Speaker 3: talk about another players and another team's player right now
- 7:29Speaker 3: from that standpoint, but I'll just talk in bigger sort
- 7:32Speaker 3: of the bigger picture of things. We're going to continue
- 7:34Speaker 3: to be very aggressive across the board and trying to
- 7:36Speaker 3: find different ways to help our organization. And you know,
- 7:39Speaker 3: we've been from a trade standpoint, from a free agent
- 7:42Speaker 3: standpoint in the past. We'll continue to be aggressive and
- 7:45Speaker 3: trying to find ways to help our group. And like
- 7:47Speaker 3: we said, we think we have a lot of great
- 7:49Speaker 3: young pieces coming. We want to make sure that we're
- 7:51Speaker 3: supporting those young pieces that the burden's not all on
- 7:54Speaker 3: them from a development standpoint, And you know, the last
- 7:57Speaker 3: few days, we've been aggressive and trying to do different things.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Look the free agent market, there's not a lot of
- 8:02Speaker 3: sort of high end elite players this year with the
- 8:04Speaker 3: cap escalating, most players or most teams have signed their
- 8:07Speaker 3: own guys. So I think you're seeing throughout the league
- 8:10Speaker 3: a lot of trades going on right now. That's how
- 8:13Speaker 3: teams see that how they can improve their team. One
- 8:16Speaker 3: of the reasons. I think too. A lot of teams
- 8:18Speaker 3: right now aren't looking for draft capital in trades. They're
- 8:20Speaker 3: looking for players, a lot of hockey for hockey trades.
- 8:23Speaker 3: It's part of the reason why we jumped on the
- 8:24Speaker 3: trade for Mackey Samuskevitch, just because we felt that was
- 8:27Speaker 3: a draft capital trade that we could certainly improve our
- 8:29Speaker 3: team on from that bit. And hey, we'll continue to
- 8:32Speaker 3: look at those things as we move forward here next
- 8:33Speaker 3: week or two.
- 8:34Speaker 2: There's the raid still there where you know, some of
- 8:36Speaker 2: these toss could easily continue, you know, not just into
- 8:39Speaker 2: this next week, but also into July as well.
- 8:41Speaker 3: I think it's one percent for sure, right there's never
- 8:43Speaker 3: you're never sure about the time flying on all these
- 8:46Speaker 3: different trades. Sometimes it takes five minutes and gets done.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Sometimes it's a progression over months. We had some discussions
- 8:53Speaker 3: about samus Kevitch at the trade deadline and then it
- 8:55Speaker 3: you know, immterialized obviously last week. I think with the
- 8:59Speaker 3: lack of free out there, you know, sometimes it gets
- 9:02Speaker 3: to the big trade time is right around the draft.
- 9:04Speaker 3: I think that's going to actually progress throughout most of
- 9:06Speaker 3: the summer.
- 9:07Speaker 6: Jason, you talked about the guys coming up. We've seen
- 9:10Speaker 6: Oscar Fisker, Mulgar, Jacob Malonson, Ryan Winterton. You just re
- 9:13Speaker 6: signed Logan Morrison. Who haven't we seen yet that you
- 9:17Speaker 6: are excited to potentially get here full time in Seattle.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Well, I think you touch base a little bit on
- 9:23Speaker 3: Oscar Molguard. I think Oscar you know what was so
- 9:26Speaker 3: good was he got a taste of the National Hockey
- 9:28Speaker 3: League last year. You look back in his entire year,
- 9:31Speaker 3: comes over in North America, gets a sort of involved
- 9:35Speaker 3: with the American Hockey League, goes to the Olympics, plays
- 9:37Speaker 3: National Hockey League games, and then in the HL playoffs.
- 9:40Speaker 3: He was probably one of the best players in American
- 9:42Speaker 3: Hockey League through two rounds and stuff this year. So
- 9:44Speaker 3: not only playing that good two way game that he
- 9:46Speaker 3: can certainly do, he started being more of an offensive
- 9:49Speaker 3: force out there. That got us really excited. You know,
- 9:51Speaker 3: I think to just looking at our team. You saw
- 9:53Speaker 3: at the end of the season there bringing up players
- 9:55Speaker 3: like Cocoa. Obviously, victor Ousmin did a nice job. Yanni
- 9:59Speaker 3: got some more games. They're the one that we weren't
- 10:01Speaker 3: able to get up was Furcus, Right, he was injured
- 10:03Speaker 3: a little bit at the end of the year. I
- 10:05Speaker 3: think he took a really big step. You look at
- 10:07Speaker 3: that line of Morrison, Fercus and Yanni throughout the entire playoffs,
- 10:12Speaker 3: they were the sort of our go to line down
- 10:13Speaker 3: there and stuff, And I think that's what got us
- 10:16Speaker 3: really excited about the playoff run in Coachilla Valley is
- 10:18Speaker 3: that in every key spot, whether it's our top players
- 10:21Speaker 3: and forward, our top defenseman are number, our starting goalie,
- 10:24Speaker 3: all young players. And that's the big difference from where
- 10:27Speaker 3: Coachella Valley had their first two playoff runs.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Jason, before we let you go, how fired up are
- 10:31Speaker 2: you to see where Matkie Samuskevich fits into this?
- 10:34Speaker 5: Well.
- 10:34Speaker 3: We think he's a player that has some same sort
- 10:37Speaker 3: of attributes as Bobby mcmaht, great speed and a great shot,
- 10:42Speaker 3: sort of a shot first mentality. Obviously having a he
- 10:45Speaker 3: has a relationship with Matty Benier's from the Michigan days there,
- 10:48Speaker 3: so I think it just allows him to make that
- 10:50Speaker 3: interaction to our group that much easier and stuff from
- 10:52Speaker 3: that perspective. But look, he's won a Stanley Cup, He's
- 10:55Speaker 3: been a part of a great organization in Florida. We've
- 10:58Speaker 3: talked about it before, trying to bring people into our
- 11:00Speaker 3: organization that have won at different organizations, whether that's Brendan Montrour,
- 11:03Speaker 3: Chanler Stevenson, Vince Dunn. Bringing someone like Mackie in here
- 11:08Speaker 3: aged twenty three. To me, there's so much more potential
- 11:11Speaker 3: in him and so very excited. We look at re
- 11:14Speaker 3: signing Bobby bringing in Mackie. Our team's got faster, our
- 11:17Speaker 3: team's got more of a shot mentality. We've talked a
- 11:19Speaker 3: lot about getting creating more offense by get pucks the net.
- 11:22Speaker 3: That's what these two players do.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Products of a very busy week, it continues the cracking
- 11:27Speaker 2: getting Chase reed Jason, thank you very much. Congratulations by
- 11:30Speaker 2: the way on his prase seventh overall tick and for
- 11:32Speaker 2: joining us as well.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Thank you as well. Thank you very much.
- 11:34Speaker 5: Havev good evening, Jays, Jason.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Bottererold, cracking GM joining us. We're back in a bit
- 11:38Speaker 2: with more right here from thirty two Bar and Grill
- 11:40Speaker 2: on ninety three to three KJRFM
