- 0:00Speaker 1: Mister New York. He's on the game, the Marc Simone
- 0:03Speaker 1: Show on SEVR. Well. Michael Goodwin, the finest columnist in America.
- 0:10Speaker 1: You can read them every Sunday and every Wednesday in
- 0:13Speaker 1: the New York Post. All his columns are up on
- 0:14Speaker 1: the New York Post website. Michael Goodwin, How you doing.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Good morning, Mark? Thank you?
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey. What was that famous saying the Palestinians never miss
- 0:24Speaker 1: an opportunity, to miss an opportunity?
- 0:27Speaker 2: Ah? Yes, one of my favorite lines, and I think
- 0:32Speaker 2: we could say with confidence it seems to be applying
- 0:35Speaker 2: here in the current situation.
- 0:38Speaker 1: So I don't know. You've disagreement, it's I think it's
- 0:43Speaker 1: the best you could get right now. And congratulations of
- 0:46Speaker 1: President Trump for pushing it. But we've done this way,
- 0:49Speaker 1: haven't we been down this road before and it never
- 0:52Speaker 1: holds up.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Well, Look, I think the even line that you mentioned
- 0:57Speaker 2: is certainly applies. The Palestinians and the Hamas in particular,
- 1:06Speaker 2: want to be the skunk at the garden party here
- 1:10Speaker 2: when you have so many endorsers of this deal, enthusiastic
- 1:15Speaker 2: endorsers Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, even cutter you would
- 1:22Speaker 2: think that would that would create the momentum. And certainly
- 1:25Speaker 2: President Trump and Steve Whitcoffin Gared Koshner, who did the negotiations,
- 1:31Speaker 2: thought that they had pretty much a water tight deal
- 1:36Speaker 2: twenty points and beginning with the hostage release and the
- 1:42Speaker 2: broad agreement. I think Mark was with a great achievement,
- 1:47Speaker 2: achievement in and of itself, and HAMAS sent what I
- 1:52Speaker 2: believe was a false signal on Friday that it would
- 1:57Speaker 2: it would move on the hostage release. It was ready
- 2:00Speaker 2: to do that, and then it said but and the
- 2:04Speaker 2: butt seems to go on endlessly. It is calling for
- 2:09Speaker 2: renegotiating what looks to me like the heart of the deal. Otherwise. Now,
- 2:14Speaker 2: I think a hostage release would be a great thing
- 2:17Speaker 2: in and of itself if there were an exchange. But
- 2:22Speaker 2: if that doesn't work, why would any of the other
- 2:26Speaker 2: pieces work, which ultimately get to disarmament of HAMAS and
- 2:32Speaker 2: civil administrators and no role for HAMAS and the governance.
- 2:37Speaker 2: So if they can't even complete the first step, there's
- 2:40Speaker 2: no hope of them completing the other steps. So I
- 2:43Speaker 2: think that's why this thing has been bogged down, and
- 2:47Speaker 2: you get yet a new round of negotiations. I think
- 2:51Speaker 2: that the Hamas strategy is just to negotiate this till
- 2:56Speaker 2: everybody gets tired of it and then walk away from it.
- 2:59Speaker 2: I don't think they want peace. I don't think they
- 3:01Speaker 2: want a settlement because it's the end of their power.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, even I guess the end result of
- 3:07Speaker 1: all this thing would be a two state solution. Didn't
- 3:09Speaker 1: we just try a two state solution for twenty years
- 3:11Speaker 1: and look how it ended?
- 3:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, Gaza was a two state solution, right.
- 3:17Speaker 2: It was a Palestinian state, and it became a terrorist state,
- 3:22Speaker 2: and that's what it remains. And to the of course,
- 3:26Speaker 2: great detriment and deaths of many civilians there who either
- 3:32Speaker 2: went along or had no choice but to go along
- 3:35Speaker 2: with the Hamas rule. And so we're coming up tomorrow, right,
- 3:40Speaker 2: is the two year anniversary of October seventh. The horrors
- 3:44Speaker 2: of that day and all of what we have witnessed
- 3:48Speaker 2: sins can be traced back to that decision by Hamas
- 3:52Speaker 2: to invade, to take the hostages, to slaughter innocent civilians.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Mostly of the twelve hundred Israeli they killed, most of
- 4:01Speaker 2: them were civilians. And so this is the fruits of
- 4:06Speaker 2: that poison tree, and Hamas doesn't seem ready to let go.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Yeah, well, we'll see what happens. It's gonna be a
- 4:13Speaker 1: interesting week with that. Hey, let me ask you about
- 4:15Speaker 1: the mayoral race this. You know, it looks like people
- 4:18Speaker 1: are starting to think when Adams dropped out, half those
- 4:22Speaker 1: votes might go to Cuomo and half might go to Mamdani.
- 4:26Speaker 1: And there's this myth that if Curtis drops out, suddenly
- 4:28Speaker 1: Cuomo will get all those votes. Most of these Curtis
- 4:31Speaker 1: voters are not going to Cuomo. They'll pretty much just
- 4:33Speaker 1: stay home. What do you think?
- 4:37Speaker 2: Look, I think that Cuomo probably benefited more from the
- 4:44Speaker 2: Atoms withdrawal, or will I should say when the votes
- 4:47Speaker 2: are actually tangulating. I mean Adams was running at about
- 4:52Speaker 2: ten percent in the polls. Half of that, of course,
- 4:55Speaker 2: would be five points for Cuomo. I suspect it'll be
- 4:59Speaker 2: more than that because it won't just be the Adams voters.
- 5:03Speaker 2: But I think the net effect of Adams dropping out
- 5:08Speaker 2: is it makes Cuomo look like has an easier path
- 5:15Speaker 2: to the election. Now, obviously you're right that if Fleawah
- 5:20Speaker 2: stays in and he's there's no reason to think he's
- 5:23Speaker 2: going to change his mind. Yet I still think it's
- 5:26Speaker 2: going to end up with Mam Donnie winning. There's no
- 5:29Speaker 2: way that either one of them can top Mom Donnie,
- 5:34Speaker 2: who I think alone, because I think he's probably got
- 5:38Speaker 2: a floor of somewhere around forty percent. And so if
- 5:43Speaker 2: two people are going to divide the remaining sixty percent,
- 5:46Speaker 2: neither one of them is going to get there the
- 5:49Speaker 2: way it looks now.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Yeah. Now the other thing is, you know de Blasio,
- 5:53Speaker 1: people like that get elected because you've got eighteen turnout
- 5:57Speaker 1: and just the left turns out. If you could go
- 6:00Speaker 1: back to the good old days of seventy five eighty
- 6:02Speaker 1: percent turnout, don't you think that could make a difference.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Well, yes, a turnout could could swamp the you know
- 6:10Speaker 2: all these predictions. I mean, it is worth noting marked
- 6:14Speaker 2: that when Rudy Giuliani and David Dinkins had their rematch
- 6:20Speaker 2: in nineteen ninety three, where Giuliani won, there were on
- 6:26Speaker 2: the order of one point eight to one point nine
- 6:29Speaker 2: million votes cast. In more recent and more recent elections,
- 6:34Speaker 2: there have been one point one million votes. Now, think
- 6:37Speaker 2: about that the city has grown dramatically since nineteen ninety
- 6:42Speaker 2: three by probably close to a million people, and yet
- 6:47Speaker 2: the voting totals are still far less. And so if
- 6:51Speaker 2: you were to get a big turnout that the perils
- 6:56Speaker 2: of a big turnout are that there's enthusiasm, more enthusiasm
- 7:01Speaker 2: for Mom Donnie than there is anyone else, and so
- 7:05Speaker 2: a big turnout could could actually mean more mam Donnie voters.
- 7:09Speaker 2: So I think, absent a two person race, Mam Donni
- 7:14Speaker 2: looks like inevitable from this point of view.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Well, we'll see what happens. The only thing that could
- 7:21Speaker 1: change the course of things might be the debate October sixteenth.
- 7:25Speaker 2: That's true. And look, I think Cuomo has done a
- 7:28Speaker 2: better job of He's been more active and jumping on
- 7:33Speaker 2: these things with Mom Donnie. Some of the things Mamdani.
- 7:36Speaker 2: You know that the post covered today of mam Donni
- 7:39Speaker 2: with the Ugandan leader who hates gays, you have, you know,
- 7:44Speaker 2: with the whole issue of globalizing into fada. So there's
- 7:51Speaker 2: just there's just a lot. There are a lot of
- 7:53Speaker 2: ghosts or in mam Donni's closets, and I think they
- 7:57Speaker 2: could really hurt him, and I think Cuomo is doing
- 7:59Speaker 2: a better job of bringing them out and seizing on
- 8:03Speaker 2: it and highlighting it. So it really as a warning
- 8:07Speaker 2: to mom Donnie voters, Look, this is what you're buying.
- 8:10Speaker 2: This is this is the guy you're supporting. Really you
- 8:13Speaker 2: want this guy? Uh, particularly the young people on the left.
- 8:17Speaker 2: I mean you want to you want to get you
- 8:19Speaker 2: want to be in bed with some guy who who
- 8:22Speaker 2: who hangs around the people who hate and persecute gays?
- 8:25Speaker 2: Is that Is that what the New Revolution is about?
- 8:28Speaker 2: I don't think so. So. I think the question is
- 8:32Speaker 2: can Mam Donnie survive what's probably going to be a
- 8:36Speaker 2: NonStop attack for the next month.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, Michael Goodwin, great stuff. You ever go read
- 8:41Speaker 1: his column. It's in Yesterday's New York Post. It's up
