- 0:05Speaker 1: This is what the Flux.
- 0:06Speaker 2: I'm justin and I'm harsh deep and it's Wednesday, the
- 0:09Speaker 2: fifth of June HG.
- 0:10Speaker 1: After nearly one hundred years of operations in Australia, he
- 0:14Speaker 1: and O cruises, you're shutting. It's Australian operations. They reckon
- 0:18Speaker 1: high poor charges and the difficulty of actually finding a
- 0:21Speaker 1: place to park is all a bit too much.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Oh yes, Flux fam. Have you ever had a friend
- 0:26Speaker 2: owe you money but you've never chased them up because
- 0:29Speaker 2: he felt too awkward? What about a family member asked
- 0:31Speaker 2: you for financial health? Money is awkward, but it doesn't
- 0:34Speaker 2: have to be. That's why we've built this month's course
- 0:36Speaker 2: in the Flux Academy where we give you the tools
- 0:38Speaker 2: to have money conversations with your partner, your friends, and
- 0:41Speaker 2: your family. So make sure to download the Blocks app
- 0:43Speaker 2: and check it out.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Three cruise worthy stories today, let's get into it for
- 0:48Speaker 1: our first life. Three sixty The Kids Tracking software has
- 0:52Speaker 1: launched its Nasdaq IPO, which means it will now be
- 0:55Speaker 1: due listed on the ASX and the NASDAK.
- 0:58Speaker 2: More listings, more opportunities, Give me the rundown jazz Okay,
- 1:01Speaker 2: So Live.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Three sixty is what they call a family social networking app.
- 1:04Speaker 1: It was launched back in two thousand and nine and
- 1:06Speaker 1: listed on the ASX in twenty nineteen.
- 1:09Speaker 2: In other words, it's the ultimate tool for helicopter parents
- 1:11Speaker 2: who want to track their children's every single movement.
- 1:14Speaker 1: And as she after Life three sixty bought Tile for
- 1:16Speaker 1: two hundred and five million bucks, they're pretty much tracking
- 1:19Speaker 1: anything that does or does not move but Jazz.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Despite the creepy nature, this app is growing and growing.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Yep, we're talking more than sixty one million people using
- 1:29Speaker 1: the app each month.
- 1:30Speaker 2: In March, Jazz Life three sixty saw its revenue jump
- 1:32Speaker 2: by thirty three percent, and.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Then in May this year, during its quarterly earnings, the
- 1:36Speaker 1: CEO announced they plan to list on the Nasdaq as
- 1:39Speaker 1: well as the ASX.
- 1:40Speaker 2: And clearly they ain't messing around because the capital raise
- 1:44Speaker 2: is officially underway.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Yeah, Life three sixty will i appeal on Monday on
- 1:47Speaker 1: the Nasdaq, raising no more than one hundred million dollars
- 1:50Speaker 1: as part of this float. Supposedly, the dual listing is
- 1:52Speaker 1: about getting increased exposure to major investors in the US.
- 1:56Speaker 2: In other words, we don't think the Australian investors value
- 1:59Speaker 2: our business high in er.
- 2:00Speaker 1: YEP, so tell me I share what is the key
- 2:02Speaker 1: learning here?
- 2:02Speaker 2: A duel listing refers to when a company lists itself
- 2:05Speaker 2: on multiple stock exchanges.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Now, a duel listing isn't common, but it's also not
- 2:10Speaker 1: so uncommon.
- 2:11Speaker 2: For example, when after Pay was acquired by Block blocked
- 2:14Speaker 2: it another listing on the AX.
- 2:16Speaker 1: YEP and mining companies BHP and riotin to also have
- 2:19Speaker 1: duel listing.
- 2:20Speaker 2: And Jazz what's the idea behind this duel listing.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Well, it can provide more avenues to access investors when
- 2:26Speaker 1: a company wants to raise capital.
- 2:27Speaker 2: And potentially allow for more trading time if the exchanges
- 2:30Speaker 2: are open at different times.
- 2:32Speaker 1: But I Shay Life Throw sixty CEO reckons that Australian
- 2:35Speaker 1: shareholders just don't value their growth.
- 2:37Speaker 2: But in saying that, Jazz Life three sixty risks doing
- 2:40Speaker 2: this duel listing at their own peril.
- 2:41Speaker 1: You see Ozzie tech companies like wis Tech, Promedicus and Zero.
- 2:46Speaker 1: They actually all trade at a premium to their US counterparts.
- 2:49Speaker 2: And that's thanks to the scarcity of global growth companies
- 2:52Speaker 2: listed on the AX.
- 2:54Speaker 1: So Life Throw sixty has clearly chosen to move on
- 2:56Speaker 1: from being a big tech fish in a more pond.
- 3:00Speaker 2: So our second story, Meta is testing a new feature
- 3:03Speaker 2: on Instagram which will force users to watch ads on
- 3:06Speaker 2: videos that you can't scroll past.
- 3:08Speaker 1: I would hardly call this a feature. HD sounds very painful,
- 3:11Speaker 1: so tell me more.
- 3:12Speaker 2: So. We all know Instagram, the social media app that
- 3:15Speaker 2: was originally called Bourbon b U.
- 3:17Speaker 1: RBN, and it was acquired by Facebook back in twenty
- 3:20Speaker 1: twelve for one billion US dollars.
- 3:22Speaker 2: But just since then, Instagram has grown to become one
- 3:25Speaker 2: of the cornerstone apps in the Meta group of companies.
- 3:27Speaker 1: We're talking over two billion monthly active users swiping through Insta.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Stories, which they stole from Snap, watching instareels, which they
- 3:34Speaker 2: stole from TikTok.
- 3:35Speaker 1: But as she Instagram continues to transition from being a
- 3:38Speaker 1: photo sharing app to now a video sharing network.
- 3:41Speaker 2: And now they're starting to explore new ways to monetize
- 3:45Speaker 2: the audience.
- 3:45Speaker 1: One of these ways is making some ads on Instagram
- 3:48Speaker 1: reels and stories unskippable, or.
- 3:50Speaker 2: As Instagram likes to call it, an ad.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Break makes it so much more palatable now.
- 3:55Speaker 2: It's similar to the free version of YouTube, which requires
- 3:57Speaker 2: users to view ads before and in the middle of
- 4:00Speaker 2: watching videos.
- 4:01Speaker 1: And for now, this ad break feature is just a test.
- 4:03Speaker 2: But it goes to show the extent that Matter is
- 4:06Speaker 2: willing to go to to continue increasing their AD revenues.
- 4:09Speaker 1: What is the key learning here?
- 4:10Speaker 2: Tech companies need to strike a careful balance between user
- 4:14Speaker 2: experience and revenue.
- 4:15Speaker 1: It's the ultimate trader because more ads generally means more
- 4:18Speaker 1: revenue for the company.
- 4:19Speaker 2: But more ads will also mean more frustrated Instagram users.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Interestingly, Ahchi, the Instagram spokesperson, said, We're always testing new
- 4:26Speaker 1: formats that can drive value for advertisers.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Hello, what about formats for your two billion monthly active users?
- 4:33Speaker 1: Exactly and ag This is exactly what happened to MySpace
- 4:36Speaker 1: after it was acquired by News Corp in two thousand
- 4:38Speaker 1: and five. YEP.
- 4:39Speaker 2: It focused on growing revenue rather than improving its tech
- 4:42Speaker 2: platform and usability.
- 4:43Speaker 1: And this led to intrusive ads and a poor quality
- 4:46Speaker 1: product that ultimately forced News Corp. To sell the business
- 4:49Speaker 1: for just thirty five million dollars in twenty eleven. For
- 4:52Speaker 1: our third and final story book, Topia is cutting fifty
- 4:55Speaker 1: employees and losing its short lived CEO as it struggles
- 4:59Speaker 1: to continue staying up float sounds.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Like a page turner, Jazz or what's going on here?
- 5:03Speaker 1: Okay? So book Toopier is the Aussie online bookstore that
- 5:05Speaker 1: was founded in two thousand and four and they listed
- 5:07Speaker 1: on the ASX in December twenty twenty.
- 5:09Speaker 2: It also owns bookstore chains like Anguson, Robertson and BookWorld
- 5:13Speaker 2: remember those Just.
- 5:14Speaker 1: That is definitely a throwback in a half.
- 5:16Speaker 2: And now book Toopia is facing some rough orders, having
- 5:18Speaker 2: announced that it's acting around fifty jobs from the business.
- 5:22Speaker 1: And they've also withdrawn their earnings guidance.
- 5:25Speaker 2: And that's not all, Jazz tell me more. Booktopia doesn't
- 5:27Speaker 2: even have the money available to make these redundancies, so.
- 5:31Speaker 1: It's taking out a one million dollar debt to help
- 5:33Speaker 1: pay for the costs associated with the redundancy.
- 5:35Speaker 2: And if it all couldn't get worse, the company CEO
- 5:38Speaker 2: has also stepped down, and.
- 5:40Speaker 1: That's after book Tobia's founder was ousted from the company
- 5:43Speaker 1: in twenty twenty two by the board.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Yep, the founder was booted from his own company.
- 5:47Speaker 1: But may may you come back now? So tell me
- 5:49Speaker 1: what is the key learning here?
- 5:51Speaker 2: When a founder remains CEO after their company lists, they
- 5:54Speaker 2: need to adapt to a different set of rules.
- 5:56Speaker 1: See once a company lists downers need a shift from
- 5:59Speaker 1: the startup mindset and.
- 6:00Speaker 2: They need to focus more on shareholder value and the
- 6:03Speaker 2: sustainability of the company.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Ash well, founders do have the best inside knowledge about
- 6:07Speaker 1: the company, it doesn't always mean they'll make the best leaders.
- 6:10Speaker 1: In Booktobia's case, their co founder was kicked out of
- 6:12Speaker 1: his position as CEO by the board.
- 6:15Speaker 2: That was after an investigation discovered that he'd sold many
- 6:18Speaker 2: of his shares in the company just before a really
- 6:21Speaker 2: ugly earnings update and.
- 6:22Speaker 1: HJA, with Booktobia's future potentially in shambles, they've now actually
- 6:26Speaker 1: brought back this co found out for the next six.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Months, which could be a good news for the company
- 6:31Speaker 2: or it may spell more trouble.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Money is awkward, there is no doubting that, and that's
- 6:36Speaker 1: why we have built this month's course in the Flex
- 6:38Speaker 1: Academy giving you the tools to have money conversations with
- 6:40Speaker 1: your partner, your friends, or your family. So make sure
- 6:43Speaker 1: to download the Flex out and check it all out.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Thanks for listening and we'll see you on Friday.
