Latest / The Monégasque Table / Buying Edible Glitter in Bulk: Event Math and Discounts

- Margaux: $3.75. Not for a jar of glitter — for a click. In search-ad data, that's what advertisers pay when somebody clicks the words "edible glitter bulk." One of the priciest clicks in the whole category. Which tells you something: the person buying sparkle for an event is worth fighting over. And worth confusing. Dana: And I showed up suspicious, because "bulk" is the word stores use right before the price per ounce quietly goes up. I've been burned by the giant ketchup. So today I want arithmetic, not vibes. Margaux: Welcome to The Monégasque Table. Today's question comes straight from event season — how do you actually buy edible glitter in bulk? For a wedding toast, a gala bar, a bakery counter. Dana: Or 200 cups of sparkly punch for a school fundraiser. Which is my actual life right now. My sister volunteered me. I wasn't even in the room. Margaux: Perfect test case. And here's the answer up front, because nobody should wait for it. You don't buy event glitter by the bag — you buy it by the serving. One drink takes about 0.1 grams. A pinch. So a 10 gram jar carries 100 servings, and a 15 gram jar about 150. Count your drinks, divide by the jar, add a spare. And the discounts aren't a secret handshake — on Amazon, quantity discounts for business buyers are printed right on the listing, up to 20% off. For almost every event, "bulk" means a handful of jars. Not a kilo bag. Dana: Flag on the play, immediately. A handful of little retail jars is exactly what I was trying to avoid. When I need 4 of something, I buy the big bag. That's how flour works. That's how rice works. Why is glitter different? Margaux: Because the flour bag tells you what's inside, and a bag of mystery sparkle very often doesn't. That's the second half of the show, so hold it. First, let's spend your punch budget. 200 cups. Dana: 200 cups. One ladle. 300 sugar-charged children. Margaux: (laughs) Okay. At 0.1 grams a cup, your 200 cups fit inside two 10 gram jars — 100 servings in each. Call it about 15 dollars a jar, so roughly 30 dollars of shimmer. That lands around 15 cents a cup. The sparkle costs less than the paper cup it's going in. Dana: Now let me tell you what that math ignores. Nobody at a folding table measures a tenth of a gram. The ladle is chaos. My sister is chaos. Kids come back 4 times and nobody stops them. Margaux: Which is why you don't plan at the ceiling — you plan with headroom. The serving guidance on the jar says you can double the pinch for a richer color, so assume your crowd doubles it: one jar per 100 drinks, plus one spare in the bag. Even doubled, you're near 30 cents a cup. And the spare keeps for the next event — it's a mineral powder, not a carton of milk. Dana: Fine. Small events, jars, headroom. Now scale me up, because "bulk" usually means somebody's business. A planner pouring a 500-glass champagne toast. A caterer with a whole season booked. Dozens of jars. Is there a real discount, or is it "email us for wholesale pricing" and then silence? Margaux: There's a published ladder, at least on our listings — Amazon's quantity discounts for business accounts. It starts at 5% off at just 2 units and steps up to 20% off at 50 units or more. No negotiating, no pallet minimum, no waiting on a rep. That 500-glass toast? At about 150 servings a jar, four 15 gram jars covers it with headroom to spare. The caterer stocking 50 jars for the season is the one who hits the 20% tier. Dana: Then let me swing at the number itself. 20% off roughly 15 dollars is still about 12 dollars a jar. And before we recorded, I went looking. There are big bags of "glitter dust" out there — craft sites, party sites — where the per-gram price flattens your little jar. I'm not naming anybody, but they're one search away. Per gram, the bag wins. Beat that. Margaux: I can't. On raw price per gram, that's the round you win — a bulk bag can beat any retail jar, ours included. What the bag usually can't tell you is what's in it. Dana: Here we go. Margaux: Stay with me, because this is the actual bulk question. There's an analysis of about 2,400 reviews across this category. Among the negative mentions, 9.5% are people discovering the sparkle they bought was never edible at all — decorative product, sold one shelf away from food. And of the ingredient complaints, over 66% trace back to missing ingredient information. Nothing printed. Nothing listed. At home, that's one bad cupcake. Poured into 300 cups at your event, it's a different kind of bet. Dana: That one lands. At home it's my kid and my call. At an event, I'm feeding other people's kids. That's a different job. Margaux: Different job, different homework. So — Sparkle Lab, business edition. Three things to ask any supplier before you buy sparkle at event scale, us included. One: the full ingredient list, printed where you can read it before you pay. Two: the safety data sheet for the exact color you're ordering. Three: named color additives that actually appear in the federal color-additive rules — mica-based pearlescent pigments sit at 21 CFR 73.350, iron oxides at 21 CFR 73.200. If a seller goes quiet when you ask, that silence is your answer. Dana: Honest question, though. Does anybody ever check? Or is this a folder I build, feel very responsible about, and no one ever opens? Margaux: For a backyard party? Nobody opens it. But the moment money changes hands, you can be asked — by a venue, by a client, by a health department. And they can stop your event. The FDA has had to say out loud that decorating glitter must be genuinely edible, with ingredients listed, because its investigators have traced real contamination cases to non-edible dust used on food. When the question comes, it's never "is it fine." It's "can you show me." A printed ingredient list and a data sheet turn that afternoon into a handshake. Dana: And if your supplier's answer is a shrug and a reorder link — well, you've learned something too. Margaux: Now the honest segment: who should skip bulk entirely. If your event is under 100 drinks, one jar covers it with room to spare. Buying a case for a birthday party isn't planning. It's warehousing. Dana: And mine: if nobody's eating it, stop paying food prices. A display cake, a photo backdrop, table confetti — craft glitter exists for exactly that job, and it costs a fraction. Just keep it away from anything with a fork nearby. Margaux: Last one — read your menu. If the drinks are opaque — coffee, cocoa, a milky punch — the shimmer disappears in there. Reviewers across this category say it plainly: it works best with clear drinks. If your event pours dark, move the sparkle budget to the dessert table, where people will actually see it. Dana: Alright, scorecard. I came in expecting "bulk" to be a trap, and it half is — just not where I thought. One: count servings, not grams. 0.1 grams a drink, 100 servings in a 10 gram jar. Two: my 200 cups is two jars and a spare, not a wholesale account. Three: the discounts are printed, not negotiated — 5% at 2 jars, 20% at 50. Four: the mystery bag wins on price per gram and still loses, because no ingredient list means no sale. Five: paperwork before pallets. Every time. Margaux: That's bulk buying in five lines. And since paperwork decides this one, here's ours, stated plainly: over 400,000 orders across the US, Canada and the UK, and a safety data sheet for every color we sell. If you're pricing an event right now, the footnote — the MONÉGASQUE Gold 15 gram jar is on Amazon, about 150 drink servings, sitting at 4.6 stars, and the quantity discount switches on at the second jar. Dana: Next time, a question I've been sitting on since my whole feed turned sparkly overnight: why are glitter drinks suddenly everywhere? Because somebody flipped a switch, and I want to know who. Margaux: (laughs) Nobody flipped it — and that's exactly what makes the numbers interesting. That's next time. Quick note before we go — this show is produced by the team at Monégasque, with AI-crafted hosts, and every number you heard was checked by humans against the documents. See you at the table.
