- 0:01They told him he had five good years left.
- 0:04That was 15 years ago. He's still standing, still
- 0:08speaking, still living. This is living with Parkinson's,
- 0:12The good, the bad, and the reality.
- 0:15A podcast about what happens when life throws you something
- 0:18incurable and you fight back anyway.
- 0:21Hosted by Bryce Perry, diagnosed at 4015.
- 0:25Years into the battle, This is the truth behind the tremor.
- 0:29Let's begin. Hey everyone, welcome back to
- 0:32Living with Parkinson's, The good, the bad and the Reality.
- 0:34And I'm Bryce. And today we're talking about
- 0:36something that so many people experience, but they don't
- 0:38always talk about. And that's the emotional side of
- 0:41Parkinson's. You know, we spent a lot of time
- 0:43talking about the physical symptoms, you know, the tremors,
- 0:45the, the stiffness, the medication.
- 0:47But what about the mental and emotional toll?
- 0:50And what about the guilt? What about the guilt of needing
- 0:53help for things that you used to do yourself, or the frustration
- 0:57of feeling like your body just won't cooperate?
- 1:00Or how about that awful feeling of being a burden to your
- 1:02family, your friends, and even at work?
- 1:04Can you relate? I sure can.
- 1:06Because if you ever felt like this, I want you to know that
- 1:10you're not alone. That this is something I
- 1:12struggled with too. And today I want to open up
- 1:15about it. I want to share some of my own
- 1:16experiences, and I want to talk about ways to shift your
- 1:19mindset. And I just want to get right
- 1:21into this because it's that important, You know, you don't
- 1:25realize how much you take, how much you take independence for
- 1:28granted until Parkinson's starts making everyday, like everyday
- 1:32tasks harder. Like everything you do is just
- 1:34harder, harder and slower. I remember the first time that I
- 1:37had to ask for help tying my shoes.
- 1:39It was such a simple thing, but suddenly my hands weren't
- 1:43working the way they used to. And I was like, really
- 1:45embarrassed. I felt super embarrassed and in
- 1:47my head I kept thinking to myself, I should be doing this.
- 1:50Like why can't I do this? I should be doing this.
- 1:53It was absolutely, it was an awful, awful experience at the
- 1:57time. It was just, I was like, I was
- 1:59mortified. I was actually mortified, you
- 2:01know, and I'm sure you, if you know you have Parkinson's, where
- 2:04your loved ones have Parkinson's, I'm sure you're
- 2:06experiencing this. So if you ever had that moment,
- 2:09that moment where you like, hesitate to ask for help just
- 2:11because you don't want to bother someone, and then why do we do
- 2:15that? You know, there's a lot of
- 2:16reasons why, you know, or actually before we get to why do
- 2:20we do that? What about some examples?
- 2:23Have you ever had to ask somebody to open up a jar for
- 2:25you? Like a pickle jar or a jar, just
- 2:28a jar, like ask your spouse or, or what not?
- 2:30I mean, I was the jar guy. I mean, when I had young kids in
- 2:33the house, it was always take the jar to daddy and daddy will
- 2:35open it up. So that first time I had to ask
- 2:38for that, it was awful. It was ridiculous.
- 2:40Or how about relying on someone else to drive because you can't
- 2:44anymore? And I'm saying that because I
- 2:47can still drive. I'm happy.
- 2:49I'm happy, happy, happy for that.
- 2:51I'm really excited. I can still drive.
- 2:53But I do know that my my, my reflexes aren't as fast.
- 2:55I know that, you know, I go a lot slower than I used to go.
- 2:59I don't think that's not pretty sure that's on purpose.
- 3:01And I'm pretty sure many other people glad that I don't go as
- 3:04fast, especially my mother and my father.
- 3:06I'm glad that I don't drive the way I used to drive, but I know
- 3:11that day's going to come and I know that I'm going to feel this
- 3:13way again, right? How about this?
- 3:15Have you ever had to like change plans at the last minute because
- 3:18you're having an off day? Have you gone through that?
- 3:21That's weird, right? And especially if it's something
- 3:23really important, like if you're going to a birthday party or an
- 3:25anniversary party or something, something big and you just know
- 3:29you can't do it. And I don't mean you can't do it
- 3:31because you're feeling like, you know, just not up to it or you
- 3:34feeling kind of you don't really want to go.
- 3:36I mean, where you're really having an off day and there's no
- 3:38way, like you would never miss this opportunity to be at this
- 3:41place, but you just can't do it. It's awful.
- 3:44And then if there's other people involved, like if you're going
- 3:46with your spouse or friends or your family, how guilty do you
- 3:51feel like that guilt just creeps in because you don't want to
- 3:54feel like a burden. You don't want people to think
- 3:56you're helpless. But let me tell you something,
- 3:59needing help doesn't make you weak.
- 4:01And I had to really learn that. And let me say that again,
- 4:03needing help does not make you weak.
- 4:06You know, the people who love you, they want to help, you
- 4:08know, they don't see you as a burden.
- 4:10They see you as family, they see you as a friend.
- 4:13They see you, they see you as somebody that they care about.
- 4:15And I get it, I get it, I get it.
- 4:17Sometimes the hardest part is just convincing yourself of
- 4:19that. And I get it because I've been
- 4:21there and I've done that. And I still do that in certain
- 4:24instances. And sometimes even when I think
- 4:26that I've conquered this and I'm, I've got the right mindset
- 4:30and I've, I've, you know, mastered everything, something
- 4:33will happen. It'll creep up, right?
- 4:36And it's that frustration. And let's talk about that.
- 4:38You know, let's be honest, sometimes Parkinson's, is this
- 4:41really damn frustrating? I almost said the F word there
- 4:46might have scared some of you away, but it's really damn
- 4:48frustrating. You know, your mind is sharp,
- 4:50but your body won't cooperate. You want to move fast, but
- 4:52stiffness slows you down. You know what you wanted to say,
- 4:59but your voice doesn't always come out that way.
- 5:02Oh my gosh, it doesn't come out the way it used to come out.
- 5:05And, and that's me. I, I, that video 2 times ago or
- 5:08two, two times ago, 2 episodes, I think it was 2 episodes
- 5:11before. I mean, literally sitting here
- 5:13saying that somebody wanted me to get a second and a third and
- 5:17a fourth and I stalled. Like after diagnosis, they
- 5:22didn't believe I had Parkinson's.
- 5:23They wanted me to get a second, a third and a fourth.
- 5:25And I, I finally gave up and it was almost mortifying because I
- 5:29these are like live to tape, so I have to go with it.
- 5:32And I'm like, how, what's the word?
- 5:34So I actually said said, you know, hey, if you know the word,
- 5:36help me out, put in the in the comments.
- 5:38And I think a couple of people got it.
- 5:40They're like opinion, second and third, fourth opinion.
- 5:43I'm like opinion, like opinion. I can see the word opinion.
- 5:46I know the word opinion. I've said the word opinion a
- 5:48million times and I just couldn't get my mouth to say it.
- 5:52And those times really, really frustrate me, like really do.
- 5:57And I think the other thing that would frustrate me as well is,
- 6:00is the mornings like, and I've said this before, in the
- 6:02mornings are my hardest time. Like I wake up, I'm stiff, I'm
- 6:05slow, I'm foggy, and it takes my meds to kick in like 30 minutes
- 6:09or something. And during that time, I, I, the
- 6:12best way to describe it is while I'm waiting for meds to kick in,
- 6:14I'm lying in bed. I just feel stuck.
- 6:16I feel stuck. And I've, I've said, you know, I
- 6:18feel like the tin man from Wizard of Oz, you know, just,
- 6:20you know, I need to get some oil before he gets going.
- 6:22And that's me. I'm just laying there waiting
- 6:24for this Levitt open to kick in so that I can get moving again
- 6:27and slowly but surely. And it's very frustrating
- 6:30waiting for your body to catch up to your, to your mind.
- 6:34And that's something so new, right?
- 6:35Your body catching up to your mind.
- 6:38Usually my body is like go, go, go.
- 6:39My mind's like stop, stop, stop, you know, like it's like crazy
- 6:41stuff. Like my body's like a rebel or
- 6:44used to be. Actually it's, it's an
- 6:45interesting point there. I think my body used to be a
- 6:47rebel in my mind was like, or was it my mind was the rebel.
- 6:50My body was unwilling. But you know what, Maybe they
- 6:51did always argue with each other.
- 6:53I don't know, just get some self therapy here.
- 6:56But it's just very frustrating to me when my mind wants to do
- 7:01something or know something and my body again, it just doesn't
- 7:03cooperate and it pretends like it doesn't know what the heck's
- 7:05going on. That's when I get into those why
- 7:08me moments. Have you had those?
- 7:11Have you had those whiny moments?
- 7:13You know, those times when you think, I didn't ask for this, I
- 7:15didn't do anything to deserve this.
- 7:16This isn't fair. You know what?
- 7:19Here's the truth. You know what?
- 7:20You're right. You're absolutely 100% right.
- 7:24It is not fair. But here's the one thing that we
- 7:27we don't get to choose our circumstances, do we?
- 7:30We don't, we don't get to choose our circumstances, but we do get
- 7:33to choose how we react. We do get to choose how to react
- 7:38to them, don't we? And that's what I try to remind
- 7:42myself when that frustration kicks in.
- 7:44I've got it. This is happening to me, right?
- 7:48It's happening to me. I can choose to be pissed off
- 7:50and grumpy and mad, or I can be like, huh, OK, I don't want
- 7:55this. I just remind myself that this
- 7:59is just trying to frustrate me. Think about it that way.
- 8:01This Parkinson's is trying to frustrate me and the less
- 8:04frustrated that I get with, with myself and with my body, it's
- 8:08sort of like the better I feel. It's like, again, I'm winning.
- 8:10It's like this fight. It's like, it's like we're
- 8:12having this fight against Parkinson's And, and if you have
- 8:15Parkinson's, you know what I'm talking about.
- 8:17You really know what I'm talking about.
- 8:18And if you don't, if you're a loved one or you, you know, a
- 8:21loved one or loved somebody who's has Parkinson's, hopefully
- 8:24I may be described in a way that makes a bit bit of sense, right?
- 8:28It's like it's just very, very frustrating.
- 8:32So there has to be some patience if you're a caregiver out there.
- 8:34Sometimes there's patience needed, patience needed.
- 8:38And and Speaking of caregivers, that's one of the hardest things
- 8:40about Parkinson's is that you feel like you're holding people
- 8:44back. You really do you start
- 8:47wondering like, is my spouse getting tired of taking care of
- 8:49me? You know, are my, are my kids
- 8:51missing out of things because of me?
- 8:53Do my Co workers wish they didn't have to accommodate me?
- 8:57You know that it's overwhelming. The feelings can be just
- 9:00completely overwhelming. But I want to tell you something
- 9:02really important and and again, you know, listen to me please.
- 9:07You are not a burden. You're not a burden.
- 9:11The people in your life don't love you because of what you can
- 9:14do or you can't do. They love you because of who you
- 9:17are. And yes, Parkinson's does change
- 9:20some things, but it doesn't take away from who you are.
- 9:22It doesn't take away your worth. It's not, it doesn't, it doesn't
- 9:25diminish why they fell in love with you in the 1st place or why
- 9:27they want to be with you through this.
- 9:29So if you're struggling with this, you need to start talking
- 9:33to people. You have to.
- 9:34I'm promising. If you're watching this right
- 9:36now and you're going, Oh my God, that's me.
- 9:37You need to start talking. You need to be open about how
- 9:40you feel. Most of the time the fear of
- 9:43being a burden isn't, is, is it's just in our heads, right?
- 9:46It's not actually how others see us.
- 9:48So the longer we don't talk about, we just feel bad, we feel
- 9:51guilty, we feel grumpy, we feel cranky, we're frustrated.
- 9:54We're, we're just feeling like I'm a burden.
- 9:55They don't, they don't need to live like this.
- 9:58You know, have you ever said that they don't need to be lived
- 10:00like this. This is the, the retirement they
- 10:02thought they were going to have. This isn't the, the life they
- 10:04thought they were going to have. They have to have their own
- 10:05like, you know, that type of thing.
- 10:07That's when you need to stop and you need to talk and you need to
- 10:10tell that person or those people who you're feeling that way
- 10:13about. And you need to tell them
- 10:14exactly how you're feeling. Because I promise you right now,
- 10:16I promise you if they love you and I know they do because
- 10:19they're with you and they're seeing this through and they're
- 10:21walking this journey with you. As someone said in the said,
- 10:23someone said a couple comments ago that it's, it's our journey.
- 10:26We were diagnosed, right? Because we're in this together.
- 10:28I guarantee you that person, that person in your life does
- 10:32not feel like you're a burden. And guess what, If there is
- 10:37somebody in your life that feel that's make you feel like a
- 10:39burden. I had somebody in my life
- 10:41previous years ago that made me feel like I was a burden, then
- 10:46guess what? That's on them.
- 10:49That's on them. That's not on you.
- 10:52And you know what, if you do have people like that around,
- 10:54you need to get away from them. I don't care what it takes you
- 10:56get away from those negative people and people that don't,
- 10:59don't, don't have the best for you and don't want you to be
- 11:01your best and, and think that you're a burden.
- 11:03You need to get around, get away from them and get around people
- 11:05and surround you, surround yourself with people who lift
- 11:08you up and not tear you down. And that could be that could be
- 11:11you, might not, that could be for anybody.
- 11:12That's just a Parkinson's thing. You need to get away from people
- 11:15that tear you down, people that that speak poorly of you, people
- 11:18that make fun of you, people that don't don't, you know, make
- 11:20you feel less than. And, and there's a big
- 11:23distinction here. And I want you to be really,
- 11:24really careful what I say here. You would say, well, this person
- 11:27makes me feel like I'm a burden. This person makes me feel like
- 11:30it, like I'm less than. OK.
- 11:32And then I would ask you if you were, if I, you and I were
- 11:34sitting, I was coaching you right now, I'd say, OK.
- 11:37And what did they say when you told them that?
- 11:40And they like, I didn't tell them I just left, Huh.
- 11:43Well, you know what? A lot of times, as I said
- 11:45earlier, it's in our head. You think they think that, you
- 11:50think they feel that way. You know what they have?
- 11:52That people that are, are your loved ones that are caring for
- 11:55you and around you. They have bad days too.
- 11:56They have grumpy days too. They have frustrated days too.
- 11:59And they, they are allowed to be frustrated too.
- 12:01Gonna get an Amen to that Amen. As all the caregivers said Amen.
- 12:06Anyway, that was that was hilarious.
- 12:08That was actually funny. But that's what I mean.
- 12:11So you have to give each other a grace.
- 12:13You have to give each other a spot.
- 12:14But you have to talk about that. And I promise you if you're
- 12:17feeling like that person over there thinks I'm a burden.
- 12:19OK and and and and I'll give you all the permission in the whole
- 12:23world. If they say yes, you're a
- 12:24burden. Yes.
- 12:25I don't like this. Yes, I don't want to be part of
- 12:26this. Then leave.
- 12:27Then get out. Pack it up.
- 12:28Let's go. Let's finish this out.
- 12:29Let's figure this out today because I only have I have I
- 12:32have some good years left of me and I'm not going to waste them
- 12:34trying to prove myself that I'm good to somebody else.
- 12:36So that's your your ticket. But I promise you the the real
- 12:39people, the people that really love you the people that really
- 12:41care for you are not going to tell you that you're a burden.
- 12:43You're they're not. And at least now they know and
- 12:46they know how you're feeling and they might be able to even
- 12:48empathize with you even better. That's pretty heavy stuff.
- 12:54That's why I'm talking to myself right here.
- 12:55It's amazing. But I guess that's the thing.
- 12:57And how do you deal with that? How.
- 12:58Do you deal with these feelings. How do we stop how do we stop
- 13:01this guilt this frustration. The self doubt from taking over.
- 13:04OK, well, I'm going to tell you what helps me, OK, Number one, I
- 13:07said it already. I always give my stuff up before
- 13:09I get there. But you've got to give yourself
- 13:11grace. You have to give yourself grace.
- 13:13You didn't choose this and it's OK to need help and you need to
- 13:17find ways to stay involved. Even if you need to adjust how
- 13:21you do things, you still bring value to what you do.
- 13:25Even if you have to adjust, even if they're slower, you still
- 13:27bring value to the things that you do.
- 13:29You bring value to your family, you bring value to your
- 13:31friendships. You bring value to work.
- 13:33I promise you, you do or or you wouldn't be there.
- 13:36OK, And again, as I said, you need to talk about it.
- 13:39Keeping these things, feels, these feelings bottled up only
- 13:42makes them worse. It really does.
- 13:45It makes them worse. You're going to find yourself in
- 13:46a funk. Funks.
- 13:47Leave the depression and you again the lag, and remember,
- 13:51this is huge. This is the big one.
- 13:52You need to write this one down. You are not a burden.
- 13:55You are still you. That's the bottom line.
- 13:59You're not a burden. You're you and you're awesome
- 14:02and you're fantastic. You know what?
- 14:04You're an awesome person that just happens to have Parkinson's
- 14:06and that's it. So don't let Parkinson's define
- 14:09you. Don't let it do that.
- 14:10You take control of Parkinson's. Make fun of it like you don't
- 14:13tell it. Tell it off, tell it off.
- 14:15I tell my Parkinson's off all the time.
- 14:16One way, you silly little buggerhead, and you stop shaking
- 14:19right now, you goofball. You know it's not me, the
- 14:21Parkinson's, right? And that's what I want you to
- 14:24remember anything today. You remember you are not a
- 14:26burden. Now, if that resonates with you,
- 14:29give me like a thumbs up in the comments.
- 14:31You don't have to say anything, just a thumbs up just like Bam,
- 14:33if you want. I mean, I'd love it and I'd love
- 14:35to see lots of thumbs up because I want people to know.
- 14:37I want you to know. I want your loved ones to know.
- 14:39I want you to tell somebody. I want you to share this with
- 14:41somebody. They're not a burden.
- 14:43You're not. Get that mindset out of your
- 14:44head. I promise you your life's about
- 14:47to change if you can do that. It really did.
- 14:51So have you struggled with these feelings?
- 14:53How do you cope? Is this something different than
- 14:55me? I'm not the BLM doll.
