- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome back to the Elon Musk Podcast.
- 0:05This is a show where we discuss the critical crossroads that
- 0:08shape SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company, and Neuralink.
- 0:13And I'm your host, Will Walden. Spacex's Starlink has recently
- 0:17conducted its first successful live test of the new Global
- 0:22Direct to Sell or the DTC mobile roaming service.
- 0:27This is a huge test. It's conducted with standard
- 0:30unmodified smartphones comes just days after the launch of
- 0:33the first batch of DTC capable satellites on top of a Falcon 9
- 0:38rocket. Currently the service is limited
- 0:40to sending and receiving texts only, but in the future they
- 0:44want to do phone calls and send data too.
- 0:47Now the Starlink network with approximately 5311 low Earth
- 0:52orbit satellites, or Leo, is set to expand by roughly 7500 by the
- 0:57end of 2027. Now in the UK, Starlink offers
- 1:01packages starting at about $75.00 a month, and in the US
- 1:05it's about the same. And that's you also have to buy
- 1:08the equipment as well for the ground services.
- 1:11Now the service promises fast Internet with low latency times
- 1:15and considerable download and upload speeds in rural areas.
- 1:20Globally, Starlink boasts 2.3 million customers, with 42,000
- 1:25of them in the UK and more in the US, primarily in rural
- 1:29areas. In the addition of 4G mobile
- 1:31capability to the satellite constellation aims to enable
- 1:34global roaming communications with regular smartphones, a
- 1:38significant step beyond traditional satellite phone
- 1:41services. Now Starlink's DTC satellites
- 1:44feature in advance E node B modem functioning like a cell
- 1:48phone tower in space. Now this innovation allows for
- 1:52network integration akin to standard roaming services and
- 1:55the first technological test of this capability was conducted in
- 1:59the USA in partnership with T-Mobile.
- 2:02The test demonstrated the capability of these satellites
- 2:06to facilitate the sending and receiving of text messages via
- 2:10an unspecified smartphone. This marks a huge achievement in
- 2:14satellite based communication technologies.
- 2:16It's Starlight's statement highlighted the challenges and
- 2:19breakthroughs of this tech. They noted the difficulties of
- 2:21connecting cell phones to moving satellites and the innovative
- 2:25solutions involving custom silicone phased array antennas
- 2:29and advanced software algorithms to overcome those challenges.
- 2:33And SpaceX plans to launch additional DTC capable
- 2:36satellites to introduce a basic text service by 2024 and with
- 2:41the aim to expand to voice, data and IoT services by 2025.
- 2:46Now currently in the UK, they lack a mobile operator partner
- 2:50for the service, but in the US they have T-Mobile, and pricing
- 2:54details for global roaming plans are yet to be disclosed.
- 2:58Elon Musk has stated that the first DTC capable satellites
- 3:01offer limited data speeds, suggesting that while beneficial
- 3:05for areas without cell connectivity, they're not
- 3:07competitive with terrestrial networks.
- 3:09Yet SYSTEM aims to provide basic communication needs,
- 3:13particularly in remote areas, say if you're hiking in the
- 3:16woods, or if you're up on a mountain, or if you're skiing
- 3:19someplace where there's no cell service.
- 3:21Well, this could possibly be at least a lifeline with a text
- 3:26service and possible data in the near future.
- 3:29Now, a recent update from Starlink revealed their
- 3:31successful test with T-Mobile using network spectrum to send
- 3:35and receive text messages through their new satellites.
- 3:38And this is a major advancement in integrating satellite and
- 3:41cell communications because currently we have cell towers in
- 3:45the service described as cell phone towers in space plans to
- 3:49offer text messages later this year for T-Mobile customers in
- 3:52the US in a broader range with voice and data services expected
- 3:55to commence in 2025. And the connectivity of the cell
- 3:59phones to satellites was also outlined by SpaceX and they said
- 4:03that the challenges of terrestrial stationary networks
- 4:07versus fast moving satellites is remarkable.
- 4:10The company showed that technological advancements
- 4:13enables standard LTE services to cell phones on the ground.
- 4:18T-mobile's collaboration with Spacex's Starlink is a huge
- 4:21advancement in the cellular coverage for space tech now,
- 4:26particularly in areas traditionally underserved by
- 4:28conventional network infrastructure.
- 4:30Its partnership is not just about enhancing existing
- 4:33services, but also moving forward with a novel approach to
- 4:36connectivity. The field test plans with
- 4:39Starlink satellites show a crucial step in this joint
- 4:41adventure. Now these tests aim to
- 4:44demonstrate the practicality and effectiveness of using
- 4:47satellites to bridge coverage gaps in regions where
- 4:50geographical challenges such as rugged terrain or stringent land
- 4:53use restrictions impede the establishment of ground based
- 4:56cellular towers. Now this network could provide a
- 5:00much needed solution. This approach promises to extend
- 5:03T-mobile's reach, offering connectivity to customers in
- 5:06even the most remote locations. Now the significance of this
- 5:10development lies in its potential to redefine the scope
- 5:12of mobile network coverage. By integrating satellite
- 5:15technology into their network, T-mobile's not only looking to
- 5:18enhance their service in remote areas, but also to ensure
- 5:21reliability and continuous connectivity in emergency
- 5:25situations where terrestrial networks might fail.
- 5:28This initiative could transform the way we think about mobile
- 5:30coverage, especially in disaster prone regions where
- 5:33communication is critical. The collaboration is poised to
- 5:36offer a unique combination of terrestrial and extraterrestrial
- 5:40network capabilities, creating a more robust and versatile
- 5:44communication network. The anticipation around the
- 5:46field testing phase reflects the industry's growing recognition
- 5:50of the need for more innovative solutions to address
- 5:52connectivity challenges in diverse environments.
- 5:55This T-Mobile and Spacex's startling venture into this new
- 5:58territory. They're setting the stage for
- 6:00more connected future. The success of this partnership
- 6:03could encourage other mobile operators to explore similar
- 6:06satellite based solutions, potentially leading to a more
- 6:09interconnected and accessible world.
- 6:11A Starling satellites, once fully operational, could provide
- 6:14a more complementary layer to existing cell networks, ensuring
- 6:17that people stay connected all the time regardless of the
- 6:21location. Now, it's not just a
- 6:23technological leap though. It's a commitment to bridging
- 6:26the digital divide between land based and space based Internet
- 6:32and all corners of the globe. The plan is to launch D2D tech
- 6:37service this year and expand to include voice, data and Internet
- 6:41of Things services by 2025. The expansion of the Starlink
- 6:45Internet service to a network of over 5000 satellites serving
- 6:49more than 2.3 million customers worldwide shows that they want
- 6:53to scale this, and in the broader context, several
- 6:56smartphone manufacturers, service providers, and satellite
- 6:59companies are collaborating to roll out direct to device
- 7:02services. Apple, for instance, has
- 7:04launched its Emergency SOS with satellite service in partnership
- 7:08with Global Star, while Iridium recently introduced Project
- 7:12Stardust, aiming to test its D2D service in 2025.
- 7:17Now Qualcomm's dissolved partnership with Iridium and the
- 7:20latter's new initiative highlight the dynamic nature of
- 7:22collaborations in the sector. Iridium planned to begin rolling
- 7:26out its D2D service by 2026 adds another layer to the landscape
- 7:30of satellite based communication services.
- 7:32The series of developments underscores the technological
- 7:35strides being made by satellite companies and the ability to
- 7:38connect regular smartphones directly to satellites open up
- 7:41some new possibilities for global connectivity,
- 7:44particularly in these remote and underserved areas that we were
- 7:48talking about earlier. This is a huge, huge
- 7:51development, especially for regions lacking traditional
- 7:54cellular network infrastructure. And as this technology evolves,
